Wike pulls out of PDP reconciliation deal, blames Makinde for party crises

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has pulled out of all reconciliation agreements previously reached within the Peoples Democratic Party, accusing key party leaders of betrayal, dishonesty, and serial violations of mutual understandings.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Wike traced the roots of the PDP’s internal turmoil to the aftermath of the 2023 general elections, lamenting what he described as a steady decline into “dishonesty and lack of trust amongst its key stakeholders.”

“Since after the 2023 General Election, the PDP has been wantonly swinging from one part of a slippery precipice to another,” Wike said, noting that several efforts had been made to “arrest this pernicious virus of dishonesty and treachery.”

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a key member of the influential G5 group, blamed Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for sabotaging reconciliation efforts, accusing him of being the “architect of our problems.”

“I made it clear to the Governor of Oyo State, HE, Seyi Makinde, that he was the architect of our problems, pointing out to him that non-adherence to agreements reached was the bane of the party, and that he was the chief culprit of this anomaly,” Wike stated.

He disclosed that during a G5 meeting in Lagos, the governors had resolved to bury the hatchet and move forward.

This was followed by a broader meeting in Abuja at Senator Bukola Saraki’s guest house, involving other top PDP figures including Governors Bala Mohammed, Umaru Fintiri, and Makinde, alongside Saraki himself.

According to Wike, the Abuja meeting yielded a set of clear resolutions, including recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary in line with a Supreme Court judgment, the withdrawal of all court cases relating to Rivers State by the party’s National Legal Adviser, and an end to cases about state of emergency in Rivers.

But Wike said the resolutions were quickly and brazenly violated, even before the Saraki-led reconciliation committee could begin its work.

“To my chagrin, Seyi Makinde had connived with Peter Mba of Enugu State to orchestrate the summoning of the meeting of so-called South-East leaders to recommend that if Ude Okoye was not adopted as Secretary, they would pull out of the PDP,” he alleged.

Wike also accused party officials of attempting to sideline Anyanwu by presenting the Deputy National Secretary as acting National Secretary, and using a letter from him to call for a National Executive Committee meeting, moves Wike said were “in complete violation of the agreements reached.”

He cited an incident on May 24, 2025, in Jos, where a PDP zonal elective congress was aborted because INEC refused to attend.

The reason, he said, was because the letter of invitation was signed by the Deputy National Secretary, not the duly recognised National Secretary.

“This is undeniably distasteful, provocative and annoying, to say the least,” Wike declared.

Reflecting on his long association with the PDP since 1998, Wike expressed dismay that those he helped rise to political prominence had turned against him.

“It is on record that none of these persons have done anything close to what I have done to sustain this party. “What is more painful is that I contributed substantially to most of these governors winning their elections, yet I have not made any personal demands on any of them and I would never do so,” he said.

Declaring a turning point, Wike said he had lost faith in the trust and camaraderie that once existed among party stakeholders and would no longer participate in any further reconciliation deals.

“I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached. I have decided to fight on until justice is attained,” the FCT minister concluded.

The PDP has yet to issue an official response to Wike’s latest position as of the time of filing this report.

Makinde and Mba have yet to respond to the minister’s statement.

Port Harcourt Refinery shutdown: PETROAN makes fresh demands on NNPCL

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has asked Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to adhere to a 30-day timeline for the repair of the refinery.

PETROAN spokesperson Joseph, Obele disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

This comes as NNPCL on Saturday announced the shutdown of Port Harcourt Refinery on the basis of maintenance and sustainability assessment.

Reacting, PETROAN stressed that adherence to a 30-day repair timeline would minimise disruptions to petroleum product supply.

It further warned that exceeding the 30-day maintenance timeline may exacerbate the country’s petroleum supply challenges and cause pain to millions of Nigerians.

According to PETROAN’s National President, Billy Gillis-Harry, the refinery’s shutdown for maintenance is expected, but the association wants NNPCL to adhere to the scheduled 30-day repair timeline to minimise disruptions to petroleum product supply.

PETROAN fears that the 30-day schedule might not be realistic due to usual bottlenecks, potentially leading to further delays and exacerbating supply challenges.

The association is worried that delays in the old refinery’s 30-day rehabilitation schedule may worsen economic hardship for millions of Nigerians and it will have a negative effect on the business of PETROAN members who bought millions of litres of petroleum products from NNPCL refinery depot resulting to loss of capital.

PETROAN listed its demands on NNPCL as follows.

“Inclusion of PMS Blending Unit: PETROAN emphasises that the repair process must include the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) blending unit, as the crude oil cracking process is of no value without

“Timely Completion: PETROAN demands that NNPCL complete the repair before existing stocks run dry to prevent market monopolisation and ensure a stable supply of petroleum products.

“Preventing Monopoly: Completing the repair on time will help maintain competition in the market, benefiting consumers and the economy.

“Task Force Setup: PETROAN recommends that the Honourable Minister of Petroleum set up a task force comprising all Petroleum Industry Stakeholders Forum to monitor the 30-day repairs.

“Weekly Progress Briefs: The task force should brief Nigerians on the job progress every weekend to ensure transparency and accountability in achieving the 30-day repair schedule.

“Prompt Payments to Contractors: PETROAN recommends that payments to contractors handling the repairs be made promptly to avoid delays and ensure the project stays on track.”

Uzodimma promises to restore Orlu as Imo’s economic hub

…As wife receives award from Catholic women

The Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma has assured the people of Orlu of his administration’s resolve to restore the city as the business hub of the State.

He made the promise at the Holy Trinity Cathedral Orlu weekend, where the leadership and members of the Catholic Women Organization (CWO) of the Diocese honoured his wife, Barr. Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma with the prestigious Nneoma Nwereugwu Merit Award.

The CWO said the choice of the title for the First Lady of Imo State was in recognition of her outstanding motherly role since assuming that role.

Addressing the recent economic difficulties faced by the Orlu community, which he attributed to the  detrimental actions by those against progress, Governor Uzodimma emphasised that, “despite these obstacles, God has demonstrated His support for the  area and envisioned a future, where Orlu is recognised for its enterprise and community spirit.”

He, however, pledged support for the completion of the proposed N500 million Queen of Peace Female Hostel Complex, by immediately rallying support from his friends, who accompanied him to the venue of the event at the Cathedral to make appreciable financial commitments for the project.

The Governor, not only thanked the Orlu Diocesan CWO for the honour bestowed on his wife and other deserving mothers, but expressed gratitude over the support his family has received from the Bishop of the Orlu Catholic Diocese, Most Rev (Dr.) Augustine Ukwuoma, over the years.

Earlier in his homily, Bishop Ukwuoma emphasised the special role of mothers in society, noting that, “the Diocese recognises and rewards Catholic mothers, who have made significant contributions to the service of God and humanity, as well as those who exhibit exemplary behaviour in their homes, parishes, and communities.”

Bishop Ukwuoma referenced notable mothers in the Bible, who made positive impacts, but expressed concern that “many modern mothers are not living up to their roles, as societal role models.”

He congratulated all the mothers, who were honoured and urged all mothers to raise their children properly, asserting that “strong families are essential for a peaceful and secure nation.”

Bishop Ukwuoma, who also praised the wife of the Governor for her motherly virtues and societal status, affirmed that she deserved the award given to her.

He, however, encouraged Mrs Uzodimma to continue supporting her husband, in his efforts to work for the benefit of the State.

Wife of Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun and that of Ebonyi State, Mrs Mary- Maudline Nwifuru were among the dignitaries at the event.

ITC flays Ohaegbulem, over unruly attacks on GM

..Says, their suspension linked to missing items

Staff of the Imo State Transport Company, ITC, have taken Mr. Ohaegbulem Chijioke Kelvin to the cleaners, over unguarded utterances against the General Manager, Hon. Uche Obiozor.

In a letter being circulated on social media platforms, written and signed by Ohaegbulem, addressed to the Governor of Imo State, and dated May 20, 2025, he accused Obiozor of illegal sack of over 150 workers, including him.

Also in Ohaegbulem’s letter, he alleged that the ITC GM runs the affairs of the establishment with high-handedness and employs those only loyal to him.

Against this backdrop, fresh reasons for his suspension have emerged.

In an interview conducted by some newsmen yesterday, May 21, 2025, some workers of the ITC at the premises, especially, the Courier department where Ohaegbulem Kelvin served, it was revealed that main factor why Obiozorauthorised his suspension may not be unconnected to the missing six IPAD tablets under the supervision and watch of Ohaegbulem Kelvin.

The Head of Courier Logistics/Department of ITC, Owerri, Mr. AmarachukwuOdu explained that on Saturday April 19, 2025, a complaint from the ITC rider, Mr. Patrick came to his table that five IPAD tablets belonging to a female Customer were missing from the Courier store room.

On getting the complaint, he called the attention of the ITC dispatchers namely: Ohaegbulem Kelvin Chijioke, UcheEjim and OsinachiOkereke, but the three persons denied getting in contact or seeing the IPADS.

While the search for the missing five IPAD tablets intensified, the remaining one tablet making it a total of six also got lost next day being Sunday, the 20th April.

Mr. Odu hinted that it was at that point he knew that something was wrong somewhere.

According to Mr. Odu, it was only him, being the Head of the Courier Department, Mr. Patrick the rider, and the three others (Ohaegbulem, Ejim and Okereke) that had access to the store room.

Odu disclosed that earlier on Sunday, before he left office to Church, Ohaegbulem and the two others were in the office and locked office.

He said surprisingly, on Monday morning, April 21, 2025, while he came to work, Ohaegbulem, Ejim and Okereke absconded and never reported to work.

It was at that juncture, he brought the matter to the General Manager’s attention, who still gave them some daysof  grace to find the missing items or would face a sanction.

Speaking further, Mr. AmarachukwuOdu disclosed that having exhausted the time frame without any recovery of the lost IPADS, the General Manager had to suspend Ohaegbulem Kelvin, Ejim and Okereke in May 2, 2025 since the lost items were on their custody and were lastly seen at work a day before the Monday.

In addition, the Courier Head explained that the suspension of the suspected trio was in order and nothing illegal about it.

“They were at work the days the items got missing. They were incharge at the office and had express entrance to the store room, no one else did. No outsider enters the place. So they deserved every action taken against them”, Odu said.

Furthermore, Odu clarified that in contrary to Ohaegbulem’s claims of salary arrears, he pointed out that Obiozor’s tenure has never owed workers any salary, especially in their Courier department which he is the head.

Also fielding questions from Journalists, Rider for ITC Owerri under the delivery department, Mr. Patrick ChideraEze furiously asked why someone would blame the GM for suspending erring Staff especially when the evidence was clear.

He disclosed that currently, the customer who owns the stolen IPADs has been worrying over the lost gadgets which made him also to take the matter to the department before the GM took the action of suspending the three mentioned persons.

Mr Patrick said, the total cost of the IPADS is five hundred and ninety-five thousand naira (#595,000) from the invoice generated from the customer and from all standing, would be a debt ITC would pay.

“I wouldn’t say that the GM was wicked because business is not run by sentiments. I feel that every business has its own principles which the GM executed. I don’t think he singled anyone out, he did what was the best because even when I went back to him to plead on their behalf, he said he didn’t do it for me but for the sanity and integrity of ITC to avoid future occurrence. So their suspension I would say, was in good fate”, Eze opined.

Further investigations by our Correspondent, yesterday, showed that all the Staff were busy at work without wearing long faces.

Some also attested that the same Ohaegbulem, an adhoc staff was connected to a former GM of ITC who is still fighting the progress of the establishment from different angles encrypted in falsehood.

ENTRACO urges drivers to update their vehicle particulars or  face full weight of law

By Jennifer John

The Imo State Environmental Transformation Agency (Imo ENTRACO) has urged all commercial drivers in the state, especially the BusImo drivers to update their vehicle particulars and driver’s license or risk having their vehicles being impounded.

The General Manager of the Commission, MrNnamdiAnyaehie gave this instruction, while fielding questions from Government House Correspondents who called on him, in view of the protest and withdrawal of services for hours by the BusImo drivers in the capital city of Owerri and its metropolis over what they termed inhuman treatment by officials of Imo ENTRACO.

While positing that most commercial bus drivers in the state don’t have driver’s license, he warned that henceforth, any person caught for the offence of obstruction, which is the only mandate of the Commission in the transportation sector, must show his or her valid vehicle particulars, including driver’s license, before such vehicles will be released”.

Reacting to the compliant of the drivers about incessant harassment and high-handedness of ENTRACO officials and task-forces, Anyaehie described it as corruption fighting back.

He said the state government, on 23rd April, issued a notice that all commercial buses with tinted glasses should remove them within 72 hours and consequently set up an enforcement team, comprising different government agencies, to enforce the directive.

According to the General Manager, instead of complying with the government directive, those affected waited until the enforcement team started clamping down on them, which resulted in the protest, as those affected tried to get others who were not affected to join them in protest against government.

He said what prompted the ban of tinted glasses was the surge of crimes committed with such vehicles, such as; kidnapping, one chance abduction for ritual purposes, organ harvesting, among others.

On the issue of ban on taxforces by the Governor, Anyaehie made it clear that ENTRACO is a Commission that has enforcement unit, not a tax force, and therefore not affected by the ban on task forces.

On the measures to stamp out infiltrators and impersonators among from the Commission, the General Manager disclosed that the Agency will soon roll out new sets of uniforms, with serial numbers, ID cards, to checkmate the use of “those old jackets by impostors”.

He said his leadership was embarking on cleansing in the Commission which has over time been infiltrated by criminal minded individuals, who commit all sorts of crimes with its name, adding that his officials have been arresting such infiltrators, including a recent arrest of one of such infiltrators who happened to be a hardened kidnapper.

“In that  case, if any ENTRACO official does anything, all you need do is get the serial number, come to our public complaint unit and that will be taken care of.

27-year-old man remanded in prison for killing his father

An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan yesterday, ordered the remand of a 27-year-old man, Musa Lamidi, in a correctional facility for allegedly killing his father, Rufai.

Lamidi of no fixed address was charged with murder.

The Magistrate, Mr Olaolu Olanipekun did not take the plea of Lamidi for want of jurisdiction and directed the police to return the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, for legal advice.

He adjourned the case until July 10, for mention.

The Prosecutor, ASP Musbau Lawal, had earlier informed the court that Lamidi committed the offence on May 11, at about 11 p.m, at Eruwa, Oyo State.

He alleged that Lamidi hit his father with a stick on the forehead, which caused his death.

According to him, the offence contravened the provisions of Section 319 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

Party chieftain reveals reasons for mass defection to APC in Abia

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abia State, UzomaIkeuka, has said the wave of defections to the APC in the state is due to Governor Alex Otti’s alleged lack of transparency in governance.

This is as he criticized Governor Otti for what he described as a failure to justify the substantial monthly federal allocations received by his administration.

Ikeuka, who stated this during an APC meeting held at Umuakatawom, Obingwa, commended President Bola Tinubu for his Renewed Hope Agenda, the removal of fuel subsidy, and increased financial support to governors, accusing Otti of mismanaging the state’s resources.

“More people are defecting to the APC than to the ruling Labour Party in Abia because Governor Otti has failed to show transparency in the administration of the state. No one knows the cost of the projects or the contract processes. He just awards contracts arbitrarily. Abians are not pleased with him, despite the praise-singing on social media,” Ikeuka said.

The party man described the Labour Party as a placeholder administration and insisted that the APC is well-positioned to take over power in Abia during the 2027 general elections.

He urged more residents to join the APC to ensure better governance, praising the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ben Kalu, for his role in rebuilding and strengthening the APC in the state.

“APC is consolidating in Abia. The key political figures in the state are now with the APC. We are welcoming new members every day,” he added.

Allegations of Shadow Govt: Court orders substituted service on Utomi in Lagos

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered substituted service of court processes on the 2007 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Patrick OkedinachiUtomi (also known as Prof. Pat Utomi) in relation to a suit pending against over his announced plan to establish a shadow government in the country.

In the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/937/2025 filed by the Department of State Services, DSS, through a team of lawyers, led by Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN), the Service argued that, not only is the planned shadow government an aberration, it constitutes a grave attack on the Constitution and a threat to the current democratically elected government.

On Wednesday, Justice James Omotosho granted an ex–parte motion argued by Kehinde for and order allowing service of court documents on Utomi, listed as the sole defendant, in his Lagos address by means of courier service.

The plaintiff gave Utomi’s Lagos address while Justice Omotosho adjourned till June 25 for hearing, before which Utomi is expected to have filed his defence.

In the suit instituted on May 13, the DSS expressed concern that such a structure, styled as a ‘shadow government,’ if left unchecked, may incite political unrest, cause inter group tensions, and embolden other unlawful actors or separatist entities to replicate similar parallel arrangements, all of which pose a grave threat to national security.”

The plaintiff wanted  the court to declare the purported “shadow government” or”‘shadow cabinet” being planned by Utomi and his associates as “unconstitutional and amounts to an attempt to create a parallel authority not recognized by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”

The DSS is also seeking a declaration that “under Sections 1(1), 1(2) and 14(2)(a) of the Constitution, the establishment or operation of any governmental authority or structure outside the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). is unconstitutional, null, and void.”

The plaintiff wanted  the court to issue an order of perpetual injunction, restraining Utomi, his agents and associates “from further taking any steps towards the establishment or operation of a ‘shadow government,’ ‘shadow cabinet’ or any similar entity not recognized by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”

Among the grounds on which the plaintiff is hinging its prayers includes that Section 1(1) of the Constitution declares its supremacy and binding force on all persons and authorities in Nigeria.

It added that Section 1(2) prohibits the governance of Nigeria or any part thereof except in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.

According to the DSS, Section 14(2Xa) states that sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria, from whom government through the Constitution derives all its powers and authority.

It is contending that Utomi’s proposed shadow government lacks constitutional recognition and authority, thereby contravening the aforementioned provisions.

The plaintiff further stated, in a supporting affidavit, that it is the principal domestic intelligence and security agency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, statutorily mandated to detect and prevent threats to the internal security of Nigeria, including subversive activities capable of undermining national unity, peace and constitutional order.

The DSS added that it is statutorily empowered to safeguard the internal security of Nigeria and prevent any threats to the lawful authority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Its constituent institutions.

It stated that it has monitored, “through intelligence reports and open source material, public statements and interviews granted by the defendant, Professor Patrick Utomi, in which he announced the purported establishment of what he temed a ‘shadow government’ or ‘shadow cabinet,’comprising of several persons that make up its ‘Minister.’

“The ‘shadow government’ or ‘shadow cabinet’ is an unregistered and unrecognized body claiming to operate as an alternative government. contrary to the provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

“The defendant (Utomi), through public statements, social media, and other platforms, has announced the formation of this body with the intent to challenge the legitimacy of the democratically elected government of Nigeria.

“While inaugurating the ‘shadow cabinet’, the defendant stated that it ls made up of the Ombudsman and Good Governance portfolio to be manned by Dele Farotimi; the policy Delivery Unit team consisting of OgheneMomoh, ChetaNwanze, Daniel Ikuonobe, Halima Ahmed, David Okonkwo and Obi Ajuga: and the council of economic advisers.

“Based on the intelligence gathered by the plaintiff, the activities and statements made by the defendant and his associates are capable of misleading segments of the Nigerian public, weakening confidence in the legitimacy of the elected government, and fuelling public disaffection,” it said.

The DSS further stated  that it is particularly, concerned that such a structure, styled as a ‘shadow government,’ if left unchecked, may incite political unrest, cause intergroup tensions, and embolden other unlawful actors or separatist entities to replicate similar parallel arrangements, all of which pose a grave threat to national security.

“The plaintiff, in the discharge of Its statutory duties, has gathered intelligence confirming that the defendant’s actions pose a clear and present danger to Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.

“The defendant’s actions amount to an attempt to usurp or mimic executive authority, contrary to sections 1(1), 1{2), and 14(2Xa) of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended), which exclusively vests governance in institutions duly created under the Consttution and through democratic elections.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria has made several efforts to engage the defendant to dissuade him from this unconstitutional path, including statements made by the Minister of Information, but the defendant has remained defiant.

“It is In the interest of justice, national security, and the rule of law for this honourable court to declare the existence and operations of the defendant unconstitutional and illegal,” it said.

Police arrest officer who shot WAEC student dead in Ibadan

The Police Command in Oyo State said it has arrested one of its personnel who accidentally shot dead a 14-year-old secondary school student, Kehinde-Alade, in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Adewale Osifeso, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ibadan on Tuesday.

He said the officer responsible for the discharge of the firearm had been taken into custody along with other members of his team.

Osifeso said the Commissioner of Police (CP), Johnson Adenola, had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“The investigation will be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID),” he said.

According to him, the officer is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

He assured the public that the process would be transparent and the findings made public.

The spokesperson said the command regretted the tragic incident which occurred at about 7.45 a.m. during a joint traffic enforcement operation with the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA).

He said the team of officers were attempting to stop a black Honda Accord car, marked FST 639 JJ, driven by the deceased’s father, OdunayoAlade, for driving against traffic.

“Rather than complying with lawful directives, the driver allegedly accelerated toward the enforcement team in an attempt to evade arrest, ramming into two OYTMA vehicles and a police Buffalo Patrol Truck.

“In an effort to prevent further damage and harm to officers and other road users, barricades were set up to demobilise the fleeing vehicle.

“However, the driver reportedly broke through these barricades, continuing to drive recklessly and endangering lives,” he said.

The police spokesperson buttressed that, given the nature of the driver’s conduct, officers suspected possible criminal activity or a case of abduction.

“A police chase ensued, and in an attempt to immobilise the vehicle, a police corporal discharged a firearm aimed at the tyres.

“Tragically, the bullet missed and struck KehindeAlade ‘m’, who was seated in the rear seat behind the driver.

“He was immediately rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival,” he said.

Osifeso said the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

He said the police command extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, adding that the command remains resolute in its commitment to upholding justice and ensuring accountability.

Yahoo Boy jailed, forfeits N124m, N30m Mercedes-Benz in Kwara

Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin has sentenced a 23-year-old serial internet fraudster, Adebisi Emmanuel Olalekan, to 24 months imprisonment without the option of fine.

Olalekan, a native of Omuo-Ekiti in Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was convicted yesterday, May 21, 2025 after he was found guilty of the two-count charge of offences bordering on cybercrime, including cheating and impersonation preferred against him by the Ilorin Zonal directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the forfeiture of N124,402,322 (One Hundred and Twenty-Four Million, Four Hundred and Two Thousand, Three Hundred and Twenty-Two Naira) found in Olalekan’sWema Bank account, a white Mercedes Benz ML350 valued at N30 million, and an iPhone 14 Pro Max used in perpetrating the crimes.

The convict was accused of impersonating many foreign nationals including Joshua Compbell Novak, through fake Gmail and TextPlus accounts between August and December 2024. Through these fraudulent identities, he defrauded victims, including AllisaMotazedi and Brittany Boggess, of $100,000 and $1,000, respectively.

“That you, Adebisi Emmanuel Olalekan, between August 2024 and December 2024 within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, fraudulently impersonated one Joshua Compbell Novak via your Gmail account and TextPlus number with the intent to obtain a total sum of $100,000 from AllisaMotazedi, which you did obtain, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 22(2)(ii) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention) Act, 2015 and punishable under Section 22(2)(b)(IV) of the same Act.”

Olalekan pleaded guilty to both counts.

Upon his plea, counsel to the EFCC, Sesan Ola, led an investigating officer, Paul Aniebonam, in evidence narrating how the convict created fake online profiles to deceive and defraud unsuspecting foreign victims.

Aniebonam confirmed to the court that proceeds of the fraudulent activities were used to acquire the luxury vehicle in October 2024, while over N124 million in his bank account was traced to similar illicit transactions.

He also tendered key exhibits including the bank statement, car documents, mobile device, and four extra-judicial statements made by the defendant.

Justice Awogboro sentenced Olalekan to 12 months imprisonment on each count, to run consecutively. The court also granted the final forfeiture of all traced assets to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The case originated from a report by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which alerted the EFCC to Olalekan’s cybercriminal activities.

Missing 26-year-old banker found dead in Lagos

Days after he was declared missing, the body of a Lagos banker, Osemudiamen Idemudia, has been discovered at a morgue in the Yaba area of Lagos State.

It  had earlier reported that Idemudia, 26, who worked in the Point-of-Sale department of a commercial bank located in the Ikota area, was last seen on the evening of May 9 around CMS, Lagos Island.

A family member identified simply as Segun confirmed that the deceased was found on Sunday following an exhaustive search through several hospitals and mortuaries across the state.

“We have found Osemudiamen’s body. He was murdered. We found the body on Sunday in a morgue at Yaba with machete cuts on his head, face, and legs. I’m so sad,” Segun said.

According to him, the nature of the injuries strongly suggests the young banker may have been brutally attacked and killed.

Segun also disclosed that morgue attendants informed the family that the body had been deposited by police officers.

However, attempts to obtain further details about the circumstances surrounding his death, including the precise location where his body was recovered, have so far been unsuccessful, as the officers involved were not identified.

“The staff members of the morgue claimed that the body was brought in by the police but when we asked where they brought the body from, they could not provide an answer.

“They said they did not have details of the policemen who brought the corpse to their facility. That made the discovery more complicated.”

Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased had been buried by the family on Tuesday.

PDP S/East Caucus renominates Udeh Okoye as national secretary

The South East Zonal Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has renominated former National Youth Leader, Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the party’s National Secretary.

Senate Minority Leader OsitaNgwu presented the resolution of the caucus to the party acting National Working Committee (NEWC) in Abuja.

Ngwu recalled efforts by party organs and stakeholders, including the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF), to address the party crisis on the position of national secretary.

He also recalled that following the judgment of the Supreme Court, the PD-GF met in Oyo State on April 14 with a resolution on the matter, which was adopted by the NWC.

Ngwu noted that the resolution was that the South East Zonal Executive Committee should meet and nominate a candidate for the contentious position.

He said that the zonal committee met on May 14 at the Enugu State Government House and unanimously nominated Udeh-Okoye as its nominee for the position.

He urged the party leadership to look into their request.

“We are asking you to look at a zone that has been the backdrop and backbone of the PDP.

“A zone that has delivered all the National Assembly members and all governors to the PDP in the past, a zone that is eager to redeem its past glory.

“We are praying that the request of this zone should not be jeopardised. Let us look at it based on the point of its merits.

“Let it be a stepping stone in our urge and our drive to reposition our party.“We are not here to make another request, but we are speaking to our consciences so that whatever decision that is taken at the end should be for the interest of the party,” Ngwu said.

He said that the position of the South East on the issue had always been to find a pathway and a lasting resolution to the crisis rocking the PDP.

“We are looking for lasting peace so that we can perform better in the upcoming and subsequent elections,” Ngwu said.

Receiving the resolution, the PDP acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, represented by the Deputy National Chairman (South), TaofeekArapaja, expressed the confidence of the PDP to reclaim the South East.

Damagum pledged that the party leadership would look into their resolution and forward its recommendation to the National Executive Committee, at its meeting was scheduled for May 27.

He urged party members, especially aggrieved members in the zone, not to leave the PDP but to jointly work together to resolve all issues.

“I understand why you are not happy, but even as you are angry out there, we can find a solution.

“It’s like a landlord running out of his own house because the house is leaking.

Senate moves to criminalise ripening of fruits with chemicals

The Senate has begun moves to criminalise the continuous unwholesome practices of chemical ripening of fruits among fruit sellers in Nigeria, as against the natural way of allowing the fruits to ripe by coming up with stiffer punishment for anyone caught in the act to save lives.

Consequently, the Senate has mandated its Senator AdeniyiAdegbonmire, SAN, APC, Ondo Central led Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to as a matter of urgency have a cursory look at the extant laws in order to carry out an amendment that would incorporate the stiffer punishment for those involved in the act of chemical ripening of fruits.

The Senate has summoned the Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Prof. MojisolaAdeyeye to appear before its Committees on Health and Agriculture to explain what the agency has done so far with the Chemical ripening of fruits and how to ensure that it does not continue henceforth.

Resolutions of the Senate yesterday were sequel to a motion titled, “Urgent need to investigate with an intention to halt the continuous unwholesome practices of chemical ripening of fruits among fruit sellers in Nigeria.” It was sponsored by Senator Anthony Ani, APC, Ebonyi South.

The Upper Chamber has urged NAFDAC, Ministry of Agriculture & Food Security, and Federal Competition and Consumer protection Commission to investigate the practice of chemical ripening of fruits in Nigeria.

It has also asked NAFDAC, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, National Orientation Agency, NOA and FCCPC to increase the level of awareness by continuous sensitization and public enlightenment on the hazardous implications of chemical ripening of fruits

The Senate has further urged NAFDAC, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service and Nigerian Custom Service to ensure that imported fruits especially apples are not preserved with harmful chemicals.

The Upper Chamber equally urged NAFDAC and FCCPC to commence regular visits to fruits markets to check the practice of chemical ripening of fruits.

In his presentation of the motion, Senator Ani said, “The Senate: Aware that ripening of fruits is a natural physiological process that makes fruits sweeter, more palatable, edible, nutritious, softer and attractive. Fruit ripening is a highly regulated irreversible process that involves highly coordinated, complex biochemical and physiological changes;

“Also aware that artificial ripening of fruits involves the external application of chemicals and other agents to achieve faster and more uniform ripening of fruits;

“Informed that among the widely used artificial ripening agents, are ethylene and methyl jasmonate which have been reported to be non-toxic for human consumption; however, they are relatively expensive. In many developing countries, low-cost chemicals such as calcium carbide, ethylene glycol, and ethephon are reported to be commonly used to artificially trigger the ripening processes of fruits;

“Also informed that the cosmetic quality of artificially ripened fruits will increase but organoleptic qualities (taste, colour and smell), nutrition value and shelf life are depreciated when fruits are subjected to treatment without considering maturity status;

“Worried that nutrition experts and regulatory agencies such as NAFDAC, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, etc, have warned against fruit ripening with calcium carbide, describing it as a harmful practice that endangers human lives;

“Also worried that Calcium carbide contains impurities such as arsenic, lead particles, phosphorus, etc., that cause several health hazards such as cancer, heart, kidney and liver failure, neurological disorders, intestinal problems, skin damage, mouth ulcers, etc;

“Saddened that the practice of ripening of fruits with dangerous chemicals have been on the increase among fruit sellers in Nigeria;

“Also saddened that many of these fruit sellers are ignorant of the health hazards posed by the consumption of artificially ripened fruit but driven by the incremental profit made as most customers prefer to patronize the artificially ripened fruits due to its enhanced cosmetic appearance not knowing that they are buying poison; and

“Notes that the use of some of these chemicals has been banned in many countries of the world, but they are still being used indiscriminately in Nigeria.”

VP is spare tyre – Disu warns Peter Obi against accepting Atiku’s offer

Veteran journalist, Jimi Disu has cautioned former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against accepting a vice presidential slot from his counterpart in the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar.

Disu said the Vice President is a spare tyre with no statutory powers in Nigeria’s constitution.

He was reacting to reports that Obi agreed to the Vice President slot with Atiku in ongoing coalition discussions.

Obi had denied such reports, saying he is part of the coalition to fight bad governance, poverty and other challenges faced by Nigerians.

However, speaking on Nigerian Info FM 99.3, Disu said: “What is being said is that Peter Obi is being offered the Vice presidential slot because of Atiku from the North.

“It’s all nice for Atiku but one thing I will tell Peter Obi is that a Vice President is a spare tyre and you are dealing with a seasoned politician.

“It’s left to you to know if you can trust this man not to throw you to the dustbin by the time he becomes the president.

“If I were Obi, I would not risk it because it doesn’t make sense because the constitution does not provide anything for you statutorily.

“You could be made Vice President and jolly well be worse than the man who made fun of the one who said the other was an ice cream seller.

“We have a Vice President that said he would handle defence and his president will handle other things.”

Protesters storm UAE embassy, seek deportation of Mele Kyari over NNPCL probe

Hundreds of young Nigerian professionals yesterday stormed the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Embassy in Abuja, demanding that the country to deport MeleKyari, former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, to answer questions over alleged corruption during his tenure.

The protesters, under the aegis of Young Professionals Forum (YPF), said Kyari’s presence in Nigeria is required in the probe of the financial activities of the national oil company during his tenure as group chief executive officer.

Barrister Sambari Benjamin, who spoke for the protesters, noted that Kyari’s alleged corrupt practices have had far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s economy, particularly the country’s energy sector.

According to the protesters, Kyari’s tenure was marked by alleged deliberate obstruction of local refining initiatives, disregard for national interests and personal enrichment.

They further alleged that Kyari’s actions as NNPCL boss had crippled national productivity and drained Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves. They equally alleged that it has increased the vulnerability of consumers to adulterated petroleum products.

The Young Professionals Forum urged the UAE government to refuse Kyari residency and asylum. The protesters in the same vein requested that Kyari be blacklisted to prevent his escape from justice.

“We believe that MeleKyari’s actions have brought shame to our nation and our people. His alleged corrupt practices have had devastating consequences for our economy and our people. We cannot stand idly by while those in positions of authority abuse their power for personal gain.

Speaking during the protest, Benjamin said, “We urge the UAE government to refuse Kyari residency, asylum, and to blacklist him to prevent his escape from justice. The Nigerian people demand accountability and transparency, and we will not rest until justice is served.”

The group stressed that granting Kyari asylum would undermine the rule of law and set a dangerous precedent for other public officials who might seek to escape accountability by fleeing abroad.

The protesters urged the UAE government to uphold its commitment to international cooperation and justice by denying Kyari refuge.

Benjamin added, “The implications of granting haven—whether directly or inadvertently—to Kyari are manifold. Firstly, it would constitute a direct affront to the Nigerian judicial process, which is on the verge of initiating investigations and possible prosecutions against him and his accomplices.

“More devastatingly, this would obviously send an unfortunate message to the people of Nigeria, most especially the youth and emerging professionals— that accountability is optional, that impunity is mobile, as that justice can be conveniently overridden or circumvented by the elites who can afford the financial prize.

“We, the Young Professionals Forum of Nigeria, therefore urge, in the strongest possible terms, that the United Arab Emirates refuse them residency and asylum. Let it not be said that the UAE, a nation of high moral standing, became an escape route for two of the most controversial figures in Nigeria’s contemporary regulatory history.”

Atiku, Peter Obi, El-Rufai working together, adopts ADC as coalition party

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and ex-governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State have adopted the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as the official platform of the opposition coalition.

The reports said that the trio agreed to adopt the party after a meeting on Tuesday night.

Disclosing this, an insider who wished to be anonymous, said the coalition has been born.

The source said: “They have adopted the African Democratic Party as the coalition party, all of them (Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai) are working together.

“They came to the conclusion at a meeting last night, which lasted up till the early hours of this morning. You know politicians meet when we are asleep.

“All the leaders and stakeholders of the coalition were there, they set up committees to dot the Is and cross the Ts while preparing the way for the eventual public unveiling of the coalition.

“But effectively, as we speak, the coalition has been born, the conclusion meeting took place.”

On the date for the official unveiling, the source said: “There is none for now, but it will be sooner than later, very soon.”

Nnamdi Kanu: Court admits N1 billion judgment in FG’s treason trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday has admitted in evidence, an Abia State High Court judgement, which awarded “N1 billion damages” in favour of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, following the invasion of his home by security agencies, in the latter’s ongoing treasonable felony and terrorism trial by the federal government.
Justice James Omotoso admitted the document as an exhibit, as requested by Kanu’s lawyer, Paul Erokoro SAN.
It would be recalled that the federal government had accused Kanu of broadcasting threats across Nigeria, warning that anyone who flouted a sit-at-home order in the southeast would face consequences and inciting insurrection against the government.
The federal government further alleged that, based on Kanu’s threats, banks, schools, markets, shopping malls, and petrol stations in the southeast remained closed mostly on Mondays.
Kanu denied the allegations in the 2015 case, paving the way for trial; however, the trial commenced in 2025.
At the court session on Wednesday, an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), identified with the code-name “BBB,” informed the court that Kanu was neither arrested nor detained by the service in Kenya, as alleged by Kanu and his lawyers.
The witness had, during his examination-in-chief, stressed that Radio Biafra was not licensed in Nigeria and that Kanu allegedly ordered his followers to kill people.
He further stated that security agencies established that NnamdiKanu called for sit-at-home orders and directed his followers to enforce them.
The witness, being cross-examined by one of the IPOB leader’s counsel, Paul Erokoro, SAN, said that, regarding the probe of NnamdiKanu, the DSS code of conduct requires operatives to always be neutral and objective.
When asked if he was among the operatives that arrested NnamdiKanu in Kenya, the witness replied that his department did not determine whether NnamdiKanu was kidnapped from Kenya.
He further stated, “DSS did not kidnap Kanu in Kenya,” emphasizing that the secret police do not operate outside Nigeria but are focused on internal security.
“We are confined to Nigeria. We did not arrest Kanu in Kenya,” he added.
The witness denied knowing how many international treaties Nigeria has signed, but added that Nigeria is a member of the United Nations.
He confirmed that agitations for independence occurred in several countries in 1960, the same period Nigeria gained independence from Britain.
He admitted knowing that South Sudan separated from Sudan and that Scotland is agitating for independence from Britain.
He added, however, that Kanu allegedly called for Biafra secession “by any means possible, including war.”
The witness confirmed hearing the word “Biafra” many years ago but maintained that Biafra remains part of Nigeria.
“Biafra fought a war against Nigeria, but there is currently no entity recognized as Biafra,” he added.
The witness confirmed being aware that several courts have held that the arrest of NnamdiKanu and the invasion of his home were illegal, adding, “Yes, I have read about it.”
“You said you read it in the newspaper? Now, the High Court of Abia state in the case between NnamdiKanu and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in Suit number HIN/FR/4/2021, declared that the military invasion of the applicant’s(NnamdiKanu) home in Abia state on September 10, 2017 was unlawful amounting to a violation of the applicant’s fundamental right to life and personal liberty and the Court awarded damages of N1 billion to the applicant,” Erokoro told the witness in open Court.
Erokoro then gave the witness the said judgement(through the registrar) and asked the witness to read the parties on the face of the document, to which the witness confirmed were NnamdiKanu and FG, Nigerian Army, DSS, and other security agencies.
Erokoro then applied to tender three judgments: the Federal High Court Umuahia judgment and the referenced Abia High Court judgment, and another, delivered from 2022 and 2023, respectively, against the FG and security agencies.
The exhibits were not opposed by the prosecution counsel, AdegboyegaAwomolo, SAN.
Justice Omotoso then admitted the exhibits as evidence.
“The certified true copy of the judgment in HIN/FR/4/2021 between NnamdiKanu versus FRN and seven others is hereby admitted and marked as Exhibit,” the judge added.
The witness stood his ground that the people Kanu allegedly incited burned buses during EndSARS protests in Lagos.
The witness said there is no issue with sit-at-home orders, but the one called by the IPOB leader was “notorious” because people in the Southeast were forced to comply.
He said he does not have the names of the police stations burned by suspected IPOB adherents in the Southeast.
The witness was asked if he knew TY Danjuma, a former Nigerian military general, to which he responded in the affirmative.
He confirmed being aware of TY Danjuma’s statement that the armed forces are not neutral.
However, he denied being aware of other remarks made by Danjuma about citizens defending themselves.
After that, Erokoro said there were things the defense team needed to access in order to continue cross-examining the witness.
Omotoso responded that the court was inclined to adjourn to tomorrow, Thursday, for the conclusion of the cross-examination.
The judge ordered that if the defense fails to conclude its cross-examination of BBB by tomorrow, its cross-examination will be deemed closed.

NBA to set up anti-corruption committee in all 130 branches

On Monday, the Nigerian Bar Association said it would establish an anti-corruption committee in each of its 130 branches to address corruption-related issues.

The Chairman, NBA National Anti-Corruption Committee, Prof. Babafemi Badejo, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Lagos.

Badejo said that the NBA National Executive Committee, at its meeting in Ilorin recently, passed the motion for all NBA branches to set up an anti-corruption committee mandatorily.

“An anti-corruption committee shall be established in all NBA branches to address corruption-related issues within their jurisdictions.

“They shall work closely with local stakeholders, including law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and community organisations, to reduce corruption at their respective levels.

“They shall collaborate with the NBA National Anti-Corruption Committee towards a robust NBA coordinated abhorrence of corruption.

“The national-level body shall coordinate anti-corruption efforts across all branches,” he said. The chairman added that the NBA, under the leadership of Mr Afam Osigwe, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, had already put in place the NBA national anti-corruption committee earlier this year. Badejo also said the branch-level committees would design their respective activities to boost anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria.

“With the freedom of each branch and national coordination mechanism in articulating what can be done to curb corruption, the NBA will be delivering a clear message that corruption is not a normal way of life.

“The NBA is boldly engaging in its expected role as the bastion of accountability and the rule of law. “Proactive NBA on anti-corruption is not just a professional necessity, but a national imperative.“NBA is promoting the rule of law through the promotion of anti-corruption, and the promotion of the rule of law is the guiding principle of the NBA,” he said.

No Muslim, Muslim ticket in 2027 – Youths coalition warns political parties

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, CONYL has warned political parties against fielding a Muslim/Muslim ticket.

The coalition expressed concern over what it termed “continued marginalization” allegedly felt by “Christian communities following the 2023 Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket” by the All Progressives Congress, APC.

It would be recalled that there was an uproar in 2022 when the then APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, who is a Muslim, presented Kashim Shettima, another Muslim, as his running mate.

Despite the stiff opposition amid fear of marginalization of the Christian body, the party won the election.

However, a statement issued yesterday by Goodluck Ibem, President General of the CONYL alleged that Christians are being marginalized in the Tinubu-led administration.

The statement reads, “The current religious imbalance in the executive leadership has raised genuine concerns among many Nigerians and contributed to a sense of marginalization among certain segments of the population.

“As we move towards the 2027 general elections, CONYL strongly calls on all political parties, stakeholders, and power brokers to prioritize a balanced Muslim/Christian (or Christian/Muslim) presidential ticket. This is not just a political strategy—it is a moral imperative rooted in the need to restore national unity, peace, and religious equity.

“A religiously balanced ticket will foster unity and inclusion by reflecting the religious diversity of our nation. It will promote peace and interfaith harmony, especially in a time of rising tension and distrust; address the imbalance of the past, reassuring marginalized groups that they are integral to Nigeria’s future; Set a standard for equity that future generations can build upon.

“A presidential ticket that combines both major religious faiths will address equity and fairness. Equal representation reflects the true spirit of democracy and acknowledges the diversity that defines Nigeria.

“It will rebuild public confidence as many Nigerians are eager to see leadership that embodies fairness, moderation, and inclusive governance.

Nigerian youth are tired of politics that divide. We seek leadership that unites”

NAFDAC uncovers group using evangelism to distribute suspected fake drugs

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC yesterday said it uncovered a group in Rivers State distributing suspected fake drugs to the public in the name of evangelism.

NAFDAC South-South Zonal Director, Mr Chukwuma Oligbu, said at a media briefing in Port Harcourt that the group was tracked down at Abuloma Community Town Hall.

Oligbu disclosed that a member of the group was arrested by operatives of the agency while administering one of the suspected fake dugs on a member of the public.

He further said that the products were evacuated to NAFDAC office for further investigation and documentation.

The NAFDAC official said the group was distributing unregistered eye drops, bottled water, cleansers, tablets, among others to the public.

Oligbu listed some of the products being distributed as, Evangelist Jenkins Supernatural Water, Evangelist Jenkins Cleanser, and Evangelist Jenkins Eye Drop.

He said that the group, posing as an evangelism outfit, claimed that the products could treat gastrointestinal diseases and eye challenges.

According to him, some users of the eye drop being distributed by the group have already reported having swollen eyes which the group claim is a sign of the drug’s efficacy.

“These products have no lists of ingredients, no NAFDAC registration numbers, no manufacturer’s name and address, and no expiry dates.

“People were deceived to buy the products. They claim to be running a free medical treatment mission for goiter, cancer, pile, arthritis, rashes, fibroids, cataracts and glaucoma,

“They give consultancy cards to people, they collect not less than N5,000 for each of the drugs. This is not good,” he said

FCT NUJ partners Nizamiye Hospital on free medical outreach

By Sunday Abah, Abuja

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, is partnering with Nizamiye Hospital, a private medical facility, to organise free medical outreach in the month of June and during its upcoming Press Week.

The initiative aims to promote public health awareness and provide free healthcare services to journalists within the Federal Capital Territory.

During a recent courtesy visit to Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja, the NUJ delegation, led by its Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, discussed potential areas of collaboration, particularly in health advocacy and community service.

The hospital, represented by its Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Mohammed Abubakar, expressed readiness to support the Press Week and series of medical outreach for journalists

“We welcome this kind of partnership,” Abubakar said. “All we need is a formal letter outlining the outreach plan, and we will proceed together.”

Abubakar urged the media to highlight the quality healthcare options available locally to help reduce the increasing trend of medical tourism.

He also shared the hospital’s successful outreach programs, which have served thousands of Nigerians in Nasarawa, Katsina, Bauchi, Owerri among others

“In Kefi, we treated about 2,500 patients over two days. In Katsina, around 2,250; in Bauchi, approximately 2,700; and in Owerri, about 1,700. Just last week, we attended to about 800 people, including those from neighboring areas who rushed to the venue.

We initially planned to see between 1,500 and 2,000 patients. We also left remaining medications at the local facility for continued use,” he explained.

Abubakar added, “Our outreach covers multiple specialties including cardiology, orthopedics, pediatrics, gynecology, ophthalmology, and dentistry.”

According to him , the outreach programmes are part of their corporate social responsibility to assist the less privileged in the society as well as promote well being of people.

He further commended the federal government for taking off import tariffs on pharmaceuticals, noting that this policy would significantly improve access to essential medicines.

“It’s not all about business but also helping people. For instance we pay so much on electricity and keep our foreign doctors” he added

He said medical tourism remains one area the media should tackle and create more awareness on treatments in Nigeria

In her remarks, Comrade Grace Ike praised Nizamiye Hospital’s dedication to quality healthcare and its ongoing community support efforts.

She reaffirmed the union’s commitment to raising awareness about local healthcare solutions and improving the welfare of its members through strategic partnerships.

“We look forward to a stronger partnership beyond this medical outreach.

“For example, issues like supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) in partnership with states are not well publicised. Our platform can help amplify such causes across the country, given that we represent all journalists in the FCT,” Ike said.

She added, “We also have our own news platform and website, which can be used to further promote these initiatives. This collaboration is just the beginning of a broader partnership beyond the medical outreach.”

Both parties confirmed their commitment to working together, with the medical outreach set to be a key highlight of the NUJ FCT Council’s Press Week.

Suspected rapist machete 14-yr-old girl to coma in Abia

A suspected rapist identified as Chinazum Ubani, hasmacheted a 14 year old girl to coma at Obete Nchina Village, Ntighauzo community in Obingwa council area of Abia State.

The girl was said to have gone to fetch firewood with her mates at a bush in the village when they were attacked with a machete by Chinazum.

The suspect allegedly attempted to rape the 14 year old whose name was given as Felicia, but was resisted.

Unable to have his way ,he pulled a machete and gave the girl deep cuts on her head, leg and hand, leaving her in a pool of blood and fled.

Father of the victim,Mr. ChijiokeAnaba, said his family was alerted to the incident by Felicia’s mates who escaped the attack. He lamented that his daughter lost consciousness because of too much loss of blood from the machete cuts when the search party rescued her from the bush.

Alleged N2.2b fraud: Fayose tells court he has ‘no case to answer’

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has told a Federal High Court, sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos to dismiss the case of alleged N2.2bn fraud, filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), saying that “he has no case to answer.”

Defense Counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN) and Olalekan Ojo (SAN), while making a no case submission before Justice ChukujekwuAneke, said “all the witnesses that testified for the prosecution including the exhibits tendered were based on mere speculations, which would not warrant the Defenfants’ evidence,” urging the Court to uphold the “no case submission” of their Clients.

On October 18, 2018, the EFCC had preferred eleven counts charge against the defendants; Fayose and Spotless Investment Limited, claming that Senator Musiliu Obanikoro allegedly withdrew and delivered about N2.2 billion from a company, (Sylvan Mcnamara) that failed to carry out jobs approved by Col. Sambo Dasuki, the then National Security Adviser, but diverted same to the benefit of Fayose during the 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State.

The charge was amended on November 24, 2021, and the EFCC, which called 20 witnesses, closed its case on February 28, 2025.

Senator Obanikoro, however, recanted during evidence on oath that the money he delivered to Fayose was the fund realized from several donations/fund raising and lunching towards the year 2014 gubernatorial election and being the Chairman of all the committees inaugurated for the said gubernatorial election in Ekiti State, he was in custody of the fund.

Obanikoro also stated that he was coerced and maltreated by the EFCC officials at different times during investigation.

In his evidence on Oath before the court, Obanikoro stated that he was neither a director nor shareholder nor have the mandate by the company; Sylvan Mcnamara and its representative to act for or on its behalf.

Kanu Agabi also stated that Abiodun Agbele, who was alleged to have midwifed the funds was not arraigned.

Also, the names of the beneficiaries of the lump sum withdrew by the authorized signatory to Sylvan Mcnamara were conspicuously listed in two different mandate/instruction on the letter head of Sylvan Mcnamara tendered and admitted as exhibits. Fayose’s name or anyone known to him was on the beneficiaries list.

Nine officials from various banking institutions also gave evidence for the prosecution. All the bank officials told the court that the money lodged in the account of the defendants were at all materials legitimate, reason it was not queried by the bank’s supervisory agencies.

Counsel to the defenders told the court that “contrary to the assertion and submission of the prosecution in opposition to the Defendants’ No Case Submission, filed before the Honourable Court on the 8th day of May, 2025, the Zenith Bank officials stated on oath that they received, counted and deposited the money in an account supplied by AbiodunAgbele to the head of the teller unit, Akure and if the monies brought by Obanikoro was to be illegitimate it would not have been lodged in an account.

“That the name Ayo written in the teller were not personally written by the 1st Defendant (AyodeleFayose), in fact, the second prosecution witness (AbiodunAdekoyaOshode), the then Assistant General Manager of Zenith Bank Plc, stated on 22-10-2019 as follows ‘I did not see his Excellency filling or lodging in any money either at Ado-Ekiti or Akure Branch of the Bank……. I cannot say positively that the deposit slips with the name Ayo was made by the 1st Defendant.’

“To corroborate the earlier evidence, the Branch Manager of Zenith Bank, Akure, who was PW3, AladeOluseye, stated in evidence that ‘I did not at any time see the 1st defendant (Fayose) filling any teller at Akure branch and the teller unit are under my supervision.’

“What is more, the Investigation Officer, MuhammedMadaki under cross examination by the Defendants’ Counsel that his investigation did not reveal that AyodeleFayose had any conversation with Col. SamboDasuki the then National security Adviser.

“Madaki’s words ‘our investigation did not reveal any form of conversation between the 1st Defendant and the NSA, our investigation did not also reveal any form of conversation between the AyodeleFayose and Senator MusiliuObanikoro.

The NSA made statement to us in the course of this matter but we did not show the said statements to the 1st Defendant.”

Counsel to the Defendants further said that the fund the EFCC claimed was laundered was campaign funds in custody of Senator Obanikoro, who equally admitted on oath that Fayose was the beneficiary.

The defense counsel also stated that; “It can only be reasonably concluded that AyodeleFayose collected the donations in custody of Senator Musiliu Obanikoro without more.

“EFCC subpoenaed an official of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. AdemolaFamokun, a staff of the PDP who testified on oath as PW 20. He shed lights as to the fact that there were several committees inaugurated and headed by Senator MusiliuObanikoro, hence the money realized from donations during fund raising, as well as other monies were handed over to him (Obanikoro) for onward delivery to Fayose, including money made from sales of nomination forms, party cards for the advancement of the party and its candidates in the year 2014.

“He equally stated that activities of the PDP at all material time are not funded by the NSA.”

The court adjourned to July 10, 2025 for ruling on the no case submission.

Vatican trip not political, Pope’s message should inspire reform – Obi

Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, returned from a solemn visit to the Vatican, where he attended the recent inauguration ceremony held by the Holy See.

Obi, in a statement yesterday via X, described the trip as deeply reflective and clarified that his participation in the ceremony was not political and should not be interpreted through a political lens.

“I have just returned from the Vatican, and it was a deeply solemn and reflective visit. My participation in the inauguration ceremony was in line with my previous witnessing of inaugurations, swearing-ins, and official ceremonies across the world — this was no exception,” he said.

He added, “Such occasions carry profound moral and spiritual significance. This was never a political event and should remain untouched by politics. Some moments are best reserved for quiet contemplation.”

Obi noted that he did not attend the Papal Audience and, as such, did not meet Pope Francis personally. He explained that the audience was reserved for heads of state and accredited diplomats.

“What should truly command our attention, however, is the content and moral force contained in the Pope’s homily,” Obi said, referring to the Pope’s call to fight poverty and promote a spirit of brotherhood beyond ethnic, political, and religious divides.

He emphasised that the deeper value of the gathering should not be seen in ceremonial participation but in the willingness of attendees to act on the Pope’s message.

“The fight against corruption is the essential first step toward building societies where resources are directed to what truly matters — education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and infrastructure. These should be our major concern and the lasting message we carry home from the Vatican,” Obi stated.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians in positions of authority to commit to building a more just, compassionate, and prosperous nation.

Earlier on Sunday, President Bola Tinubu, Obi, and a former Ekiti State Governor, DrKayodeFayemi, met briefly at the installation mass of Pope Leo XIV.

The encounter, which drew attention on social media after it was shared by presidential aide BayoOnanuga on X, took place during the religious ceremony attended by dignitaries from around the world.

Kaduna refinery delay unacceptable – PETROAN tells NNPC

The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has raised alarm over the prolonged delay in rehabilitating the Kaduna Refinery, calling on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited to provide a definite timeline for its completion.

Despite several government assurances, the 110,000 barrels-per-day Kaduna Refinery remains non-operational, compounding Nigeria’s persistent fuel supply challenges and escalating logistics costs across the northern regions.

In a recent statement, PETROAN criticized the repeated project delays and demanded greater transparency and accountability from NNPC. The association stressed the importance of completing the Kaduna facility alongside the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries to boost national petroleum product sufficiency and ease economic hardship.

“The Kaduna Refinery is critical for improving fuel distribution in the northern region and reducing the high cost of transportation from southern depots. Its continued inactivity is economically damaging,” PETROAN stated.

Billy Gillis Harry, National President of PETROAN, noted that the delay is unacceptable and urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene.

He recommended the formation of a high-level task force including key industry stakeholders such as NMDPRA, NUPRC, PENGASSAN, and NUPENG to resolve bottlenecks and ensure the refinery’s swift completion.

Additionally, PETROAN called on NNPC to appoint a substantive Managing Director for the Kaduna Refinery to provide leadership and accelerate progress. The group warned that unless urgent measures are taken, the country risks further inflation and worsening energy insecurity.

“The borrowed funds for the refinery projects are substantial. Nigerians deserve to know where that money is going and when these vital national assets will start operating,” the statement concluded.

JAMB Glitches: South East Reps caucus demands Oloyede’s resignation

The South East Caucus of the House of Representatives has demanded the resignation of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Prof. IshaqOloyede, over what it described as a “catastrophic institutional failure” in the conduct of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

The leader of the caucus, Igariwey Enwo in a statement issued yesterday criticized JAMB for the technical glitches that affected nearly 380,000 candidates, many of whom are now required to resit the exam.

The caucus said the Board’s response has been grossly inadequate, while also lamenting poor communication, scheduling conflicts with ongoing WAEC examinations, and the short notice given for the resit.

It called for the immediate cancellation of the 2025 UTME and the fixing of a new date, preferably after WAEC and NECO exams, to ensure no student is disadvantaged.

It also demanded the suspension of key officials responsible for JAMB’s digital operations and logistics.

The caucus noted: “Over the past week, we have exercised restraint, hoping that JAMB would provide effective remedial measures to address what is clearly a catastrophic institutional failure—one that has severely shaken public trust and the confidence of students and their families nationwide.

“As a caucus, we are deeply concerned, as all five South Eastern states we represent were directly affected by these so-called ‘score distortions.

“While we acknowledge Professor Oloyede’s openness in admitting JAMB’s failures, we must state unequivocally that the remedial steps taken so far fall drastically short of our constituents’ expectations.

“JAMB’s knee-jerk, fire-brigade approach has been anything but adequate. Students in the South East—many of whom are currently writing their WAEC examinations—were given less than 48 hours’ notice to appear for the rescheduled UTME.

“Reports indicate that this notice was grossly inadequate, resulting in low turnout. In some cases, the rescheduled UTME clashed directly with ongoing WAEC papers, compounding the distress and confusion for students and their families.”

The lawmakers maintained that accountability must go beyond apologies, saying, “his resignation would allow for a thorough, independent review of the failure and restore public confidence in the examination body.”

The Redeemed Reconciliation Church of God Inc celebrates Women’s Day

…As Archbishop charges women to intercede for husbands

By Ezinne Ude

It was jubilations and praises to God Almighty as the Women of The Redeemed Reconciliation Church of God Inc.(TRRCG), celebrated their women’s day, at the church auditorium, N0 1 Archbishop Udeh Reginald Lane -UMUOHEE along Umuofor-Umuakuru  Emekuku, Owerri North.

In a sermon, the Archbishop of the Church, Most Reverend Reginald Osonwa Udeh, advised women to always intercede for their husbands, as it could bring about total transformation in their lives.

He cited example with Zipporah, Moses’  wife, whom he said interceded on behalf of her husband when God wanted to slay him for not circumcising their son.

The Archbishop stressed the importance of women in the development of a nation, maintaining that if there is no woman, there will be no nation.

“A woman of substance is that woman that does not allow the husband to do the wrong thing. Do not be agent of confusion in your marriage, rather be a peacemaker. It is not about preaching, but how we live our lives matters a lot.

Your husband and in-laws should see you as a blessing. Be obedient, meek and gentle in spirit. Bring out your inner beauty”, he told the women.

He urged Christians to shun arrogance and pride, bearing in mind that it does not take God anything to replace anybody He wants to replace at any point in time.

Most Reverend Udeh expressed happiness that the celebration excelled beyond his expectations and returned all the glory to God.

Dwelling on the theme:”Woman of Substance”, wife of the Archbishop of the Church, Bishop (Mrs) Linda Ibiwari Udeh, described a woman of substance, as that woman that surrenders all she has unto God, that woman that sacrifices unto the service of the Lord, as well as that woman that has all the attributes as mentioned in book of Proverbs 31.

She said that the Bible had numerous women of substance such as : Abigail, Esther, Dorcas, Shunammite woman, Miriam, among others, whose contributions to things of God were recorded in the holy book.

Bishop Mrs Udeh asserted that for a woman to be regarded as a woman of substance, she must be courageous, respectful, strong, compassionate, confident, hospitable, resourceful, understanding, balanced and always confess positivity, no matter the situation. She doesn’t take no for an answer.

She expressed confidence that these attributes of women of substance can be found among the women of this present generation, despite what the world had turned into.

“Do not withdraw your arms when you are ministered to give to the servants of God. The good thing we do in the house of God does not change God. It does not make him bigger or greater, but it is we that will receive the blessings. May God help us to continue in our good deeds in Jesus name.”

One of the Women, Mrs Chidera Ihejirika, expressed appreciation to the church, husbands, friends and well-wishers for celebrating the women of the church and prayed that God will give the women grace to become women of substance.

The event featured, praise and worship, testimonies, special number by the women, drama, as well as teaching of the word of God.

Fight us and lose re-election: IPMAN tells Soludo

Soludo

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has threatened Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s re-election bid over multiple taxation and uncoordinated revenue collection in Anambra State.

IPMAN issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government to reform its revenue system or face a shutdown of all filling stations.

Chinedu Anyaso, IPMAN Chairman for Enugu Depot covering Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu States, spoke to journalists after a meeting in Awka. He expressed frustration over harassment, intimidation, and extortion by Anambra Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) officials. “The attitude of these tax collectors has overwhelmed our imagination. We have lost a lot of money to this uncontrollable taxation,” Anyaso said.

He noted that IPMAN paid N120,000 monthly as a levy in 2024, but payments increased unexpectedly in January 2025, causing financial strain. “Petroleum marketers are dying in Anambra State,” Anyaso stated, demanding a fixed levy amount. He warned that failure to address these issues within 21 days would lead to a statewide shutdown of petrol stations.

Anyaso urged Governor Soludo to intervene and stop the “criminal exploitation” by AIRS officials. In response, AIRS Chairman Chief Greg Ezeilo assured IPMAN that the state would form a committee to resolve the concerns.

The meeting caused hours of disruption, with fuel station closures stranding passengers across Anambra State.

“We are still negotiating with them, we have not really agreed on the amount to be paid. But we have told them to reduce the ransom to a reasonable amount.”

Woman accuses husband of ‘abducting’ kids in FCT

A 40-year-old entrepreneur and mother of three, Adejoke Mohammed, has accused her husband, Lukman Mohammed, a lawyer, of kidnapping their three kids and subjecting her to years of domestic violence and abuse.

Adejoke, who runs her small business out of Kuje in Abuja, told our correspondent on Monday that the abuse started in 2021, after the birth of her second child, and lasted until 2025, when they both decided to separate and share custody of the children.

“So, I met my husband when we were in secondary school. We used to be friends, so after some time, we went to different universities. A few years later, in 2015, we reconnected through a mutual friend. So, we dated for about four years. That was a distant relationship because I was in Lagos while he was in Abuja. So, after a few years, we got married in 2019. That same 2019, we had our first daughter in August. Everything was going on well, we were living happily, until 2021 when I had my second daughter, and the domestic violence started. From that year, it has been going on, the family tried to intervene, all to no avail.

“So, a week after I had my second child, we had a little misunderstanding, and he beat me up. So, he was about to take my first daughter to school that day. She complained about her shoes, and it all started then. To cut the story short, he beat me up in the presence of my mother. So, I had been trying to manage it, thinking maybe everything would be sorted out, but it continued till I got pregnant with my third baby.”

Adejoke alleged that her husband had asked her to abort the baby, claiming that he was not present through the conception until the day of delivery, after which the abuse started again.

“So, when I got pregnant with my third daughter, he even asked me to abort the baby because he’s not interested in the pregnancy, things like that, but I refused. So, all through the duration of the pregnancy, he was not there for me till I even had the baby. So after I had the baby, he started taking up the responsibility of my children.

“Until February 2025, when we had an argument and he even beat me up in the presence of my daughter,” she said.

Following the incident, the couple agreed to separate and share custody of the children, until two months ago when her husband refused to return the children to her, after his time of custody, she said, adding that Mohammed declined to bring the one-year-old daughter for her immunisation. She said he refused, and later informed her that he had dissolved the marriage and taken full custody of the children.

Consequently, Adejoke reported the matter to the Kuje Police Station, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, and the Ministry of Women Affairs for intervention, after which she petitioned the Inspector General of Police and the Nigerian Bar Association, through her lawyer, for help.

She told our correspondent that the incident had caused her emotional trauma, adding that she lived in fear of what her husband could do to her.

“I’m not safe. In fact, I am scared. I am still in Abuja because of my children. Once I can get my children back, I have to leave because he’s a very violent person. So, I’m just hoping, I’m praying, that the judge will rule in my favour and give me my children. After that, I will have to relocate. I am moving out of Abuja and going back to Lagos. Because I don’t want a situation where he will come back and kidnap those children again. Because he kidnapped my children. He kidnapped them because I don’t know why you will seize my children from me. I cannot even speak with them; I can’t see them. I do not know what is going on with my children right now. I am just in the dark,” Adejoke lamented.

When contacted by our reporter, Mr Lukman Mohammed said his wife was being “economical with the truth” while equally alleging that Adejoke had abused him and, on two occasions, attacked him with a knife and broken bottles.

“On the issue of domestic violence between 2021 and 2025, I believe she is being economical with the truth. Because there were incidents in which we had to engage each other, stemming from her violent conduct towards me and the children, most of the time. Aside from that, there were occasions when she had drawn a kitchen knife and broken bottles to stab me.

“On two occasions of her doing that, I was lucky to have been saved by our in-house maid and a younger sister who was living with us. They are still alive and living testimonies to these incidents. I still bear the marks, the scars of injuries sustained from that,” he said.

On the allegations of having “kidnapped” his children, Lukman narrated that he had had to use the police, Airport Division, to get his wife arrested for attempting to elope with the children. He further explained that he had decided to fully take custody of the children after she had sent him a voice note, stating that she would kill the kids and commit suicide.

“If you have your wife telling you on over two different occasions that she was going to kill your children and commit suicide, what are you going to do?” he asked. “That was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. I felt it was unsafe to have my children in such a character’s hands. Because it is better to be proactive than to be reactive. Because in any case, if she gets to do that, ultimately, there is no cure for a head that has been cut off. I will not be alive and will not be up to my responsibility in protecting my children from such an unstable individual.”

Meanwhile, the FCT Police Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, declined to speak on the issue when contacted, stating that she could not address a matter that was already in court.

“I don’t speak on matters that are already in court,” she told our correspondent.

Mrs. Tony advises New Couple, Norah, Stanley Ezemezie to uphold tolerance, forgiveness in their marriage

A renowned Orlu community woman leader, Mrs. Ebiddy Ifeoma Tony, has advised the newly married couple from Orsu Local Government Area, Chinaza Norah and Stanley Ugochukwu Ezemezie, to always strive to uphold tolerance, forgiveness and God’s intervention in their marriage, especially at the point of any emerging misunderstanding.

She made this disclosure to the media recently at the residence of Chief Paschal Nnaomadiebube Ezikeojiaku, Umuguma, in Owerri West Local Government Area of the state, where the traditional wedding ceremony of Norah and Ugochukwu Ezemezie was held.

The soft-spoken woman and a marriage counsellor stated that they should not in any way see marriage as a bed of roses because it has its sweet and bad moments which can only be handled through the application of an understanding.

She said: ” though, we are all weak as persons, so as our faces are different. Remembering that we are from different homes to come to meet together as God has said it, it is just to accept that this person is not perfect and you tolerate it. Tolerance is what I advise them, you should tolerate and forgive each other. Truly, it is not an easy road, but with God, all things are possible”.

She added that in the time of trouble both of them must not fail to seek the face of God together through prayers so as to build a better home, stressing that they should not seek an advice from their parents and friends in their marriage.

She equally submitted that couple should not hold any grudges against each other in the course of their living.

Mrs. Tony used same  interaction to  describe the  traditional marriage ceremony of the  couple  held  at  the Umuguma residence of Ezikeojiaku (Ogbuonyeisiogu), father of Norah, as a special one, considering the fact that it served as the first time he  was giving  out her first daughter, Norah, in marriage.  She opined that Chief Ezikeojiaku’s daughter going into marriage was in fulfillment of the biblical desire that permitted daughters to leave their fathers’ homes into other homes via marriage.

Mrs. Tony thanked God for providing a very bright and beautiful day for the held traditional marriage without any rainfall, referring the event as a delight of everybody.

It could be recalled that the held traditional marriage was preceded by the wedding of the couple at St Michael’s Catholic Parish, Umuguma, which attracted many dignitaries from different walks of life.
