Navy destroys nine illegal refining sites in Rivers

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship, Pathfinder, have destroyed nine illegal refining sites housing 175,000 litres of stolen products in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Navy said the sites had 45 ovens, 30 reservoirs, and 75 dugout pits containing approximately 60,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil, 80,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, and 33,000 litres of kerosene.

It said the destruction took place during an operation in the area on May 12, listing some of the products at the site to include crude oil, Automotive Gas Oil (also known as diesel), and kerosene.

The Commander, NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Cajethan Aniaku, disclosed this in a statement he personally signed in Port Harcourt on Tuesday night.

Aniaku said the feat was part of the Navy’s ongoing efforts in the fight against crude oil theft and illegal bunkering.

He revealed that the NNS Pathfinder’s Tactical Riverine Assault Squadron Team also uncovered two wellheads technically connected with pipes used by oil thieves to siphon crude oil to their camps.

The statement partly reads, “On 12 May 2025, the Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder successfully conducted an operation against crude oil theft and illegal bunkering activities within the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni general area.

“The NNS Pathfinder’s Tactical Riverine Assault Squadron Team, acting on credible intelligence, deployed personnel and assets to conduct anti-crude oil theft and illegal bunkering operations. During the operation, the team discovered two wellheads connected with pipes used for siphoning crude oil.

“The team dismantled the pipes connected to the wellheads and also dismantled nine illegal refining sites with 45 ovens, 30 reservoirs, and 75 dugout pits containing approximately 60,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil, 80,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil, and 33,000 litres of kerosene.

“The products were handled in accordance with anti-crude oil theft procedures. No arrests were made, as the perpetrators fled upon sighting the patrol team.”

Aniaku commended the personnel for their bravery, noting that the Nigerian Navy, under the leadership of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla (Admiralty Medal), remains committed to combating crude oil theft and illegal bunkering, which he said pose significant threats to the nation’s economy and energy security.

PDP crisis: S’East ZEC re-nominates Ude-Okoye as National Secretary

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, South-East zone has maintained its nomination of Hon SKE Ude-Okoye as the party’s National Secretary.

It could be recalled that as Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Ude-Okoye continued to fight over who is the authentic National Scribe of the party, Mr Setonji Koshoedo was appointed as the Acting National Secretary of the party.

However, at a Zonal Executive Committee, (ZEC) meeting of the party held in Enugu yesterday, the South-East PDP re-echoed its nomination of Ude-Okoye for the position, and expressed the hope that the PDP National Working Committee, NWC, will accord his nomination the honour and the immediacy it deserves.

A communique issued after the meeting was signed by Chief Ali Odefa, Zonal Chairman, PDP, South East.

It reads in full, “The South East Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, met at the Government House, Enugu, Enugu State, today, Wednesday, May 14, 2025 to deliberate on the issue of the Office of the National Secretary of the Party.

It is recalled that on March 21, 2025, the Supreme Court brought to a close the protracted legal tussle over the position of the National Secretary of the PDP. The apex court, in its ruling, held that the issue of the leadership of a political party was the internal affairs of such a party and that the courts and INEC had no jurisdiction and ought not to interfere.

Following the consideration of the report of the panel it set up to review the Supreme Court judgment, the PDP Governors’ Forum, at its April 14, 2025 meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, recommended that the South East PDP should nominate a candidate, who would serve out the remaining tenure of the National Secretary of the Party zoned to the region.

In adopting the PDP Governors’ Forum’s recommendation, the NWC during its 600th Meeting held at the Party’s National Headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Wuse, Abuja, on April 29, 2025 directed the South East ZEC of our party to nominate a candidate for the Office of the National Secretary, accordingly.

Today’s meeting was therefore convened in accordance with this directive. Rising from the meeting, the ZEC resolved to issue the following communique:

The South East ZEC exhaustively deliberated on the directive of the NWC and came to the conclusion that it offered a sure pathway to peace, unity, stability, and progress of our party. Consequently, the ZEC unanimously recommended Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the candidate to complete the term of office of the National Secretary.

We also urge the NWC to uphold its decision at its 600th meeting on April 29, 2025, by ensuring that the Deputy National Secretary of the PDP functions as the Acting National Secretary pending the ratification of the nominee for the Office of the National Secretary by NEC in line with the recommendations of the PDP Governors’ Forum as adopted by the NWC.

The South East ZEC further noted that the zone has had to go through this process for the umpteenth time, unlike what obtains in the filling of vacant national offices by other zones. It is recalled that the South East ZEC met in October 2023 and nominated Rt. Hon. Udeh-Okoye to serve out the remaining term of the National Secretary. This position was reaffirmed during the February 20, 2024 meeting of the PDP South ZEC. We also reiterated this during the meeting of ZEC in Enugu on Friday, January 25, 2025.

The South East has consistently served as a stronghold of the PDP from inception. In its near three-decade existence, we have given our loyalty and all to the Party. Currently, while the Party has been losing key members post-2023 general election, the South East PDP is at the vanguard of strengthening the Party by rallying major opposition figures into the PDP fold.

In Enugu State, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party is back in the PDP. Two Members of the House of Representatives are equally back in the PDP from Labour Party. Furthermore, PDP seats in the Enugu State House of Assembly have grown from 10 at the inception of the Assembly to 20 today.

Therefore, we hope that this time around, the position of the South East PDP regarding the Office of the National Secretary is accorded the honour and immediacy it deserves.

This would bring to a closure the needless lingering dispute over the matter. However, in the event that our position is not promptly implemented by the Party, the South East PDP, as a family, will be compelled to reconsider our relationship with the PDP going forward.”

Tinubu asks Senate to approve N1.7trn 2025 FCT budget

President Bola Tinubu has sought the approval of the Senate for the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s 2025 Appropriation Bill

The request was contained in a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and read at plenary yesterday.

“Pursuant to Section 299 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, which vests legislative powers over the Federal Capital Territory on the National Assembly, I hereby present the 2025 FCT budget proposal to the Senate for consideration.

“The 2025 FCT Budget Proposal prioritises investment in health care services, job creation, youth empowerment, social welfare services, education infrastructure as well as increasing productivity in agriculture,” parts of the letter read.

The President said that the budget was aimed at lifting as many citizens as possible out of poverty, adding that a total expenditure of N1.7 trillion was proposed for the 2025 fiscal year.

He said that 85 percent of the capital expenditure was dedicated to the completion of ongoing projects, while 15 percent was earmarked for new capital projects.

“This is to sustain the ongoing efforts at providing basic infrastructure and social amenities in the FCT,” he said.

Tinubu expressed hope that the budget proposal would receive expeditious consideration and passage by the Senate.

Islamic Devt Bank identifies priority investment areas in Nigeria

The Islamic Development Bank on Tuesday said it has identified key priority sectors for investment in Nigeria, as part of its response to the federal government’s investment drives.

Hammad Hundal, the bank’s  Head of Isdb Regional Hub, listed the sectors identified to include economic infrastructure, support for the private sector and energy security, at a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He told the Vice President that the bank is also committed to scaling up its intervention through a holistic review of its Country Engagement Framework (CEF) in Nigeria to prioritise key aspects of the agenda of President Tinubu.

At the meeting, ObiomaAsuzu, the bank’s Country Economist, al   presented its Country Engagement Framework (CEF) to the Vice President.

The CEF highlights key broad strategic objectives for boosting recovery, tackling poverty and building resilience, and driving green economic growth.

She said the ISDB CEF for Nigeria is driven by the country’s national priorities, partnerships with critical stakeholders, and resource mobilisation.

The Vice President Kashim Shettima, in his response, described the current situation in Nigeria as a great time to invest in the country, as the administration of President Bola Tinubu has addressed most of the grey areas that hitherto served as disincentives to investors.

According to him, the foundation laid by the Renewed Hope administration through critical reforms in key sectors of the economy is creating the right environment for investments in Nigeria.

“It is an exciting opportunity to invest in Nigeria. The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has created the enabling environment and is still doing so by addressing most of the grey areas that hitherto served as a disincentive. So, this is a great time to invest in Nigeria,” he said.

Shettima pointed out that with well-thought-out interventions in human capital development, nutrition, agriculture, health, education and promotion of digital trade, the administration has demonstrated commitment in addressing challenges in the critical sectors.

“This administration is poised to address the challenges that we have in key areas of human capital development, financial inclusion, infrastructure and nutrition. In fact, we have no option but to address most of these issues, and we will continue to act in the right direction,” he maintained.

The Vice President applauded Nigeria’s partnership with the Islamic Development Bank, noting that both entities are based primarily on the country’s national interest.

He therefore, urged IsDB to continue on the path already laid through its support for key government programmes such as the Special Agro-Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme, the i-DICE project and other initiatives, including the development of a Halal economy in the country.

“Let us cross-pollinate ideas and come up with a design for your Country Engagement Framework (CEF). I want you to record in your Country Engagement Framework, the development of a Halal economy, promotion of digital trade, financial inclusion and other areas. I urge closer collaboration to enable us to address some of these challenges.”

He called for improved support from the bank in areas of agriculture, human capital development, gender inclusion, investment in education and health infrastructure, and nutrition.

Chidoka, Sowore, Adeyanju, others react to JAMB’s admission of 2025 UTME errors

Reactions have begun pouring in after the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) admitted yesterday that system errors were responsible for the mass failure experienced during the recently held Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, said candidates from the South East and Lagos were affected. Oloyede apologised for the errors, adding that the candidates would be contacted to retake the examination.

In a statement, the former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, lauded the board for upholding institutional integrity.

“I commend JAMB for its consistent commitment to upholding institutional integrity. Unlike many other public agencies, JAMB did not resort to the all-too-familiar refrain of ‘Go to court,’” he wrote.

“Instead, it acknowledged its shortcomings, invited critical stakeholders for dialogue, and subjected its internal processes to external review.”

Chidoka extended solidarity and best wishes to the affected candidates ahead of the retest.

Former presidential candidate and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, in a post on X, called for the abolishment of JAMB.

“Time to scrap these extracurricular bureaucratic busybodies …JAMB, NYSC, TETFUND, NELFUND, they are all useless!” he wrote.

Lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, reacted to Prof Oloyede’s tears at the press conference organised by the examination board. He humorously said the chairman of Nigeria’s electoral umpire, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, would weep as well in 2027.

“Na so INEC chair go burst into tears in 2027,” he wrote in Pidgin English.

Medical doctor and social media influencer Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, was critical of a post on X by JAMB announcing the technical glitch which led to the mass failure.

“When you’re asked to describe the anyhowness, show them this tweet from a national agency,” he wrote.

Young Nigerian innovators shine at National Geographic’s 2025 Slingshot Challenge

Young Nigerian innovators have gained global recognition at the 2025 Slingshot Challenge, a competition hosted by the National Geographic Society and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. Three Nigerian projects stood out, showcasing the country’s growing role in climate innovation.

Reforest AI, created by 18-year-olds Lesley John Jumbo, Bright Attai, and Blessed Pepple from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, won Top Honours. Their project uses Artificial Intelligence, IoT, and embedded systems to monitor forests and curb illegal deforestation. The team will receive $10,000 and present at the National Geographic Explorers Festival in Washington, D.C., in June 2025.

“The creativity and passion we’ve seen from this year’s Slingshot Challenge participants is nothing short of inspiring,” said Deborah Grayson, Chief Education Officer at the National Geographic Society.

A team from Northern Nigeria—Faruk Salisu, Abdullahi Ibn-Ishaq, and Faisal Sa’id—earned the Distinguished Achievement Award for Fueling Trees Using Biogas. Their low-cost biogas digester, made from local materials, supports tree-planting by offering a sustainable alternative to firewood.

Naomi Inwe, a 17-year-old from Lagos, received the Significant Achievement Award for Trash to Treasure, a project promoting plastic waste reduction through upcycling workshops, clean-ups, and digital campaigns.

“These awardees give us great hope for the future of conservation,” said Lara Littlefield, Executive Director of the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.

The 2025 Slingshot Challenge attracted over 2,700 entries from 96 countries, submitted by youths aged 13–18. Nigeria’s achievements highlight its rising influence in global environmental efforts, from clean energy in the North to tech-driven conservation in the South.

Nigeria’s insecurity ‘worrisome,’ says British High Commissioner

The United Kingdom has voiced strong concern over Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation, describing it as “worrisome.”

Speaking to journalists at his Abuja residence yesterday, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, attributed the instability to regional spillovers from neighboring countries such as Sudan and Niger.

He noted that the UK government is actively working with Nigeria’s Office of the National Security Adviser and investing in security infrastructure to help mitigate the challenges.

Montgomery also raised alarms over increasing incidents of visa fraud, linking them to a recent surge in visa rejections. He advised prospective visa applicants to ensure that they submit accurate and complete documentation to improve their chances of approval.

Despite the concerns, the UK reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening economic and trade relations with Nigeria through the Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP). The partnership aims to boost cooperation in key sectors such as education, agriculture, financial services, clean energy, digital technology and the creative industry.

The envoy welcomed the latest World Bank report, which projects Nigeria as being on a path toward economic recovery—an outlook that he said reinforces its potential as a strong investment destination for the UK. He revealed that trade between the two countries currently stands at £7.2 billion.

While praising the progress in bilateral trade, Montgomery acknowledged a decline in the UK’s hydrocarbon exports to Nigeria, attributing it to increased local production—a development he described as positive.

In a move to support Nigerian exports, the UK announced tariff-free access for 3,000 products, including cocoa, cashew nuts, prawns, and flowers.

Addressing questions on the rising migration of skilled health workers to the UK, Montgomery said the British government is working to manage immigration levels, citing that over 1.6 million people had migrated to the UK in the past two years.

He emphasised that such a high level of migration is unsustainable in the long term. Still, he noted that Nigerians account for over 10 percent of recent UK visa approvals, reflecting the strength of bilateral ties.

379,997 candidates to retake 2025 UTME as JAMB Registrar weeps, admits responsibility

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has admitted responsibility for the mass failure that trailed the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

JAMB registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, fought tears at a press conference on Wednesday, while admitting to the ugly development.

He announced that about 379,997 candidates in the just concluded 2025 examination would retake the examination.

This followed widespread complaints of technical glitches, unusually low scores, and alleged irregularities in the just-concluded UTME.

Prof. Oloyede, who wept profusely, intermittently wiping his face with a handkerchief, said he took full responsibility for the negligence of its staff, revealing that 65 centres in Lagos and 92 centres in Owerri Zone covering the five states in the South East, would rewrite the exam.

FG, Imo govt train Secondary School students on Agricultural Support programmes

By Jude Onyenedogha

Imo State government, through the office of the First Lady and the State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has collaborated with the Federal Government, under the Renewed Hope  Initiative, and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, to organize a two-day seminar and training on Agricultural Support programmes for Secondary School students in Imo state.

Fielding questions from newsmen at the conclusion of the first day’s training at the Rockview Hotel, Owerri, Imo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Chief CosmasMaduba said the idea was to introduce what will be known as “Farmers’ Club” in the Secondary Schools.

He said it had been established that people no longer have interest in Agriculture, especially, when they are young, reason behind the idea of the federal and state governments to introduce the club.

The Agriculture Commissioner disclosed that for the maiden edition of the programme, five secondary schools were selected , viz: two from Owerri zone; Emmanuel College and Government College, Owerri, two from Orlu zone; Comprehensive Secondary School, Awomamma and Ideato Secondary School, and one from Okigwe.

He said, “If we are able to navigate properly, we can expand the scope to accommodate other secondary schools. What we did is to sensitize the students. Those who are interested in Agriculture were  selected by their teachers and brought to this programme and the number came to about 100 students”.

He said professionals from the Ministry of Agriculture were drafted to train the students on importance and reason they should embark in Agriculture, processes and procedures for farming in different areas of Agriculture, including crop and livestock, among others.

Maduba described agriculture as cardinal in the survival of any country, as it does not only serve for food security, but also for economic prosperity and employment creation.

He further disclosed that farm implements will be provided for the trainees to practice what they learnt, adding, “with this type of approach, there is no way we will not have values added in the area of Agriculture, at the long run”.

Tinubu, Jonathan, Akpabio, Oborevwori, others eulogize Clark at funeral

President Bola Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and his wife, Tobore, were among the dignitaries who paid tribute to the late elder statesman, Pa Edwin Clark, at his funeral service.

The service, held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Kiagbodo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, also saw the presence of Governors DouyeDiri (Bayelsa), UmoEno (AkwaIbom), and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi State).

Other attendees included the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, and his wife, Ezinne Catherine; former Governors IfeanyiOkowa, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and Chief Rufus Ada George; as well as the Minister of Regional Development, Engr. AbubakarMomoh, among others.

President Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, expressed sadness over the passing of the nationalist and respected leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF). He extended heartfelt condolences to the Clark family, the Ijaw nation, Delta State, and the country at large.

“Pa Clark was a passionate advocate for resource control, economic and social justice. He was a beacon of courage who spoke for the Niger Delta and the nation. His views on national issues were distinct and patriotic. He believed in a united Nigeria. As an astute politician, even his opponents never doubted his integrity,” Akume stated.

He further added, “History will always remember him as a patriot who fought valiantly for Nigeria’s unity. His service and dedication will continue to inspire us all.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan described Pa Clark as a great nationalist who lived with a commitment to human dignity.

“He was a staunch advocate for freedom and national pride. Pa Clark was more than a father and leader; he was an ambassador, an audacious voice for the voiceless, and a steadfast preacher of justice and minority rights,” Jonathan said.

He praised Clark’s role as a unifying force during periods of division, adding that his patriotism was rooted in love and principle rather than politics.

“Pa Clark critically examined Nigeria through a loving lens. He challenged, questioned, and proposed always to build, never to destroy,” Jonathan added.

Senate President,GodswillAkpabio in his own, extolled Pa Clark’s legacy, describing him as a defender of the oppressed.

“Pa Clark was a pan-Nigerian and Pan-African who fought for all, including the minorities. He has left a legacy and a responsibility to his followers. He did well for Nigeria and for the Niger Delta. The Senate valued him, and his memory will remain a part of our national history,” Akpabio stated.

He highlighted Clark’s commitment to justice, noting that he stood tall when others compromised for convenience.

“He didn’t just hold office, he held values. He challenged injustice and reminded us that true patriotism is active, not passive. Silence in the face of injustice, he believed, was betrayal,” he added.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori described Pa Clark as fearless, vocal, and assertive in speaking truth to power.

“Pa Clark lived a fulfilling life and will be remembered for his legacy and contributions to nation-building. He was a teacher, educator, politician, and astute public servant—an example of a life dedicated to service,” Oborevwori said.

He called for unity in the Niger Delta to continue Clark’s legacy, stressing the importance of solidarity for progress.

“When we allow division through personal sentiments, we hinder progress. Our Senate President, Senator GodswillAkpabio, is one of us. We will continue to support you because that is how we can succeed as a nation,” he stated.

Earlier, the Most Rev’d Cyril Odutemu, Archbishop of Bendel Province, Anglican Communion, delivered a homily that referenced Proverbs 22:1: “A good name is better than riches.” He praised Pa Clark’s virtues, calling him a champion of integrity and a man of impeccable character.

The Archbishop acknowledged Clark’s selfless service and legal advocacy for the poor and vulnerable, describing him as a true voice for the Niger Delta. He emphasized that material wealth is secondary to a legacy of integrity and righteousness.

Rev. Odutemu further urged Nigerians to seek God’s kingdom and live righteously, quoting Matthew 6:33: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.” He called for a return to the values of integrity and justice championed by the nation’s founding fathers.

Women of the Bille community in the Degema local government area of Rivers state, have staged a protest at the Government House, Port Harcourt, demanding the release of eight students, who were abducted by suspected pirates while in a boat travelling from Port Harcourt to Bille, to sit for the ongoing WAEC exams.

It would be recalled that suspected pirates hijacked three boats with various goods and property worth millions of Naira and kidnapped 13 passengers in the Port Harcourt-Bille waterways on May 6, 2025.

Following the incident, the Chairman, Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Port Harcourt Commercial District, Israel Pepple, has said they would suspend transport operations to compel the government to take the necessary action to protect the waterways from what he termed ‘incessant’ pirate attacks.

The women, under the aegis of Concerned People of Bille Kingdom, clad in black attires, displayed several placards and chanted songs to drive home their demands.

Some of the inscriptions on the placards read, ‘Government, save us from sea pirates’, ‘Our children going to write WAEC are with the pirates in the bush; some have been raped’, and ‘Bille people are suffering in the hands of pirates’, among others.

The women had first marched to the State Police headquarters along Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, and later, moved to the Government House along AzikiweRoad ,where they terminated the protest.

Some of the women, who spoke to newsmen, alleged that the heavily armed pirates also raped their daughters and disposed of their belongings.

They stated that the eight students are still in the hands of their captors over a week after they were abducted along with five other passengers in a boat.

While in front of Government House, one of the protesters, an elderly woman, flung herself to the ground shouting, “Government, please help me, my son is inside the River (creek). Sea pirates took him inside the bush. Government, please help me bring my son, don’t leave it like this.”

Speaking to newsmen, a lady, who gave her name as Blessing Alale, decried the many pirate attacks in the waterways, even as she recounted how her mother and seven others, travelling on the same route were kidnapped and forced to pay millions of Naira as ransom before they were freed.

Alale expressed sadness at the recent abduction adding that the students among those abducted have already missed their exams.

She stated: “Some time ago my mum was a victim. On that day, eight of them were abducted, and a ransom of N30 million was paid. After the N30 million, they requested, we bought dream fuel (petrol), power banks, bread and water before they will release them.

“We paid all that before they were out. That was then. Now, this one on the 6th of this month our children were going to write WAEC in Bille, sea pirates abducted them. How will they attack children who were going to school to write their WAEC, about eight of them?

“The other time, they will say they are adults, but these are children going to write WAEC. Their siblings are writing the exam. So, it means that these children have missed out on all the papers that have been written.”

Alale continued, “That is why the women, the mothers are here, I’m also a mother and have come out to say enough is enough. These mothers of the abducted one and the entire mothers of Bill are here seeking for help so that these children will be released to join the others.”

In her address presented to a Government House official, one of the leaders of the protest, Janet Adebayo, said, “On 6th May 2025 along the Port Harcourt –Bille Waterways a speedboat carrying 13 passengers was intercepted by heavily armed pirates who diverted them into the creeks.

“Since then, all abducted persons remain missing, leaving their families in a state of deep distress and uncertainty.

“This tragic incident marks yet another escalation in the persistent security threats along our waterways and endangers the lives of commuters and the socio-economic stability of riverine communities, especially Bille Kingdom in particular.”

She added, “In the light of this, this is an urgent appeal for intervention in the activities of sea pirates and formal submission to the Rivers State Government. We humbly appeal to the Nigerian Police, the Army and the Navy for urgent intervention by deploying patrol units to intensify surveillance and rescue operations.

“Additionally, we request your support in working with relevant security agencies to ensure the safe release of the kidnapped victims and prevent further attacks.

Addressing the women, the Camp Commandant, Rivers State Government House, O.I. Gabriel, thanked them for their peaceful disposition and assured them that actions would be taken immediately.

Gabriel stated, “The Sole Administrator gave instructions to the Chief of Staff, and the Chief of Staff now instructed me, as the Camp Commandant, to come and address you.

“And that I should collect the letter from you for immediate action to be taken in respect of the letter,” even as he appealed to the women to return home, assuring them that their letter would get to the Sole Administrator and action would be taken.

When contacted, the Spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the investigation is still ongoing to ensure those abducted are released unhurt.

She stated, “We have intensified efforts to also ensure that the perpetrators are fished out and made to face justice”.

16-year-old Ebonyi student fakes kidnap, demands N2m ransom

A 16-year-old student in SS2 class of a private secondary school in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, faked her kidnap and demanded a ransom of N2 million for her release.

The teenage girl allegedly contacted a family member, claiming she had been kidnapped.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, disclosed to reporters on Monday that a family friend helped her plan the hoax.

Ukandu said the girl attends a privately owned school located on Watchman Street in Abakaliki.

She is a native of Izzi Local Government Area and was due to return to school for the third term on Saturday.

The girl told police she had gone to buy second-hand clothes, known locally as ‘Okirika’, when someone tapped her from behind.

She claimed to have lost consciousness and woke up the next day at Ishieke Junction in Ebonyi Local Government Area.

She added that she often dreams of being kidnapped, and her mother regularly prays against it.

Upon regaining consciousness, she asked for directions back to Abakaliki town.

Instead of returning home, she went to the house of a family friend who had no idea she was missing.

Using the man’s phone, she messaged her brother, claiming she had been kidnapped and demanded ₦2 million ransom.

Her brother asked to speak with the kidnappers and requested their location, but she refused and blocked his number.

Later, she unblocked his number and sent an account number belonging to the family friend hosting her.

Unfortunately for her, the phone was tracked. Police raided the house and arrested everyone involved in the plot.

The police spokesperson confirmed that the command has launched a full investigation into the incident.

The girl has since been reunited with her family, though the matter remains under police investigation due to her age.

Stay vigilant, enemies aren’t sleeping, CDS tells troops

General Christopher Musa, Chief of the Defense Staff of Nigeria

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has charged troops of Operation FasanYanma not to allow the enemy to strike them.

The CDS, in his remarks through Rear Admiral OlusanyaBankole, delivered the message to troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division.

He applauded their proactive efforts in combating insecurity across the North West, especially under Operation Fasan Yama.

Speaking yesterday during a strategic civil-military cooperation visit at the Giginya Barracks in Sokoto, Bankole, representing the CDS, issued a passionate call for heightened vigilance and unity among security services, emphasizing that “the battle you are fighting is a just one, don’t sleep, because your enemies are not sleeping.”

He reinforced the need for inter-agency collaboration, gender sensitivity, and respect for human rights, noting that the ongoing war on banditry and insurgency requires both military strength and civilian trust.

“Let people run to you, not away from you. The best intelligence comes from the civilians you protect,” he added.

In response, the General Officer Commanding of the 8 Division, Major General IbikunleAjose, underscored the importance of people-centric operations.

“The Chief of Defence Staff’s leadership philosophy reminds us that real success in asymmetric warfare lies not only in tactical gains, but in winning the hearts and minds of our people,” he stated.

The event also featured a sensitisation lecture on human rights, gender-based violence, and military ethics, aimed at reinforcing the professionalism and accountability of troops in conflict zones.

Bankole extended heartfelt wishes to the families of troops.

SERAP’s false allegations cast our officials in bad light – DSS tells court

The Department of State Services (DSS) has said the false claim by the Socio-Economic and Accountability Project (SERAP) that its officials invaded its (SERAP’s) Abuja office cast the affected personnel in bad light, portraying them as engaging in illegal operation.

A senior official of the DSS, John Afolabi said this while testifying on Thursday before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, at the resumed hearing in the suit by two personnel of the DSS – Sarah John and Gabriel Ogunleye

The suit marked: CV/4547/2024 filed for the DSS officials by their lawyer, AkinloluKehinde (SAN), has SERAP and its Deputy Director, KolawoleOluwadare as defendants.

John and Ogunleye are claiming among others, N5billion in damages, N50million as cost of the suit and public apology to be published in several media platforms.

On Thursday, Afolabi, who featured as the second claimants’ witness, adopted his written statement on oath as his evidence in the case and urged the court to grant the reliefs sought by the claimants.

Under cross examination by lawyer to SERAP, Devine Oguru, the witness said contrary to the impression created by the report put out by SERAP, John and Ogunleye paid a routine visitation to the organisation’s office and did not engage in any invasion.

Afolabi said he was not present when the DSS officials visited SERAP’s office on September 9, 2024, but got to know about the incid not trough the media and investigation he conducted.

He said, “I was not in SERAP’s office on September 9, 2024 when the claimants visited there. I have never been there (SERAP’s). Since I was not there, I cannot tell what happened there on that day.

“But, the information on the social media and regular media about the allegations levelled against the claimants by the defendants and my investigation of the matter, gave me full insight into what transpired in SERAP’s office that day,” the witness said.

Afolabi, who said he is a Director in DSS’s Investigation Directorate, said the claimants and himself are competent, disciplined and professional officers of the DSS, adding that they remained disciplined, competent and professional in the discharge of their duties.

The witness said, not only did the allegations by SERAP cast the claimants in bad light, their employer (the DSS) got embarrassed by the allegations, because of people’s comments, and consequently ordered investigation into the conduct of the officers.

He added that as a result of the defendant’s false allegations, the claimants are currently the subject of an ongoing investigation by the DSS.

Afolabi said John and Ogunleye had been made to make statements, subjected to interrogations, faced a disciplinary panel and now suspended from the service pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

Under cross examination by lawyer to Oluwadare, OluwatosinAdesioye, the witness said the claimants, who are attached to the NGOs Table within the Investigation Directorate of the DSS, acted under the authority of their supervisor to make the visitation they made to SERAP’s office on September 9, 2024.

The witness said he was in court to testify under the instruction of the DSS’ management, adding that the allegations by SERAP were against the claimants and the service (DSS).He added, “My concern was about my personnel (the claimants) against whom the allegations were made and which allegations lowered my estimation of them.”Afolabi said while he was investigating the case, the defendants were invited, “but they failed to show up.”

The witness said the reports and allegations portrayed the claimants as engaging in illegal operations, adding that John and Ogunleye “did not carry out any operation in SERAP’s office on the 9th of September, but they only did invitation.”

At the conclusion of Adesioye’s cross examination of the witness, O. S. Kehinde, who conducted the the day’s proceedings on behalf of the claimants, announced the closure of his clients’ case.

Justice Yusuf Halilu subsequently adjourned till June 30 for the commencement of defence.

How FG violated local, international laws in extradition, trial of NnamdiKanu – Lawyer

A United Kingdom based human rights lawyer, Barrister Njoku Jude Njoku,

has said the Nigerian government violated local and international laws in the extradition and trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), NnamdiKanu.

He said Kanu’s forceful extradition from Kenya without judicial authorization contravened the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

According to him, the refusal of the Supreme Court to uphold these standards weakens public confidence in the judiciary’s independence and constitutional fidelity.

Commenting on the Supreme Court judgement of December 2023 in FRN v. NnamdiKanu, Njoku noted that Justice Garba Mohammed’s assertion that no Nigerian law explicitly prevents the prosecution of a person illegally rendered into the country negated and contradicted Nigeria’s Extradition Act, particularly sections 3(7), 5, and 15, which collectively create a legal framework that demands due process, restricts the use of force in transnational transfers, and upholds the rights of fugitives.

In a statement issued yesterday in Abuja, the lawyer described the government’s action as absurd and unacceptable..

He stressed that Kenyan and Nigerian laws demand fair hearing before removal, a requirement violated in Kanu’s case.

Njoku specifically pointed out that Kenya’s Constitution, under Article 29, guarantees freedom and security of the person, and Article 47 ensures fair administrative action – both bypassed in Kanu’s rendition. In the same vein, Nigeria’s Constitution, under Section 35, protects personal liberty, and Section 36 guarantees fair hearing, which was also infringed.

Parts of the statement read, “Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, domesticated in Nigeria under Section 12 of the 1999 Constitution, forbids arbitrary deprivation of life and integrity, reinforced by Article 7(1) ensuring the right to a fair hearing (African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights). These provisions were violated, as Kanu was removed without due process, contradicting extradition treaties between Kenya and Nigeria, which require legal procedures.

“Kanu’s charges shifted from treasonable felony to terrorism, allegedly for offenses committed outside Nigeria, raising jurisdictional issues under the Extradition Act.

“Section 3(7) and Section 5 of the Extradition Act of Nigeria, dealing with surrender conditions, don’t specifically address illegal renditions, however, trying Kanu for alleged offenses committed outside Nigeria without legal extradition contradicts the Act’s intent, adding to the legal complexity.

“The replacement of the initial charges of treasonable felony with fresh terrorism allegations—none of which were the basis for the extraordinary rendition—further violates the principle of “specialty” and subverts legal norms.

“Nigeria, by forcibly abducting Kanu from Kenya without judicial authorization, flouted both the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and binding obligations under Commonwealth extradition frameworks. The Supreme Court’s refusal to uphold these standards weakens public confidence in the judiciary’s independence and constitutional fidelity.

“Justice, if it must stand, must not be built on a foundation of illegality. Kanu’s case is not simply about a man; it is about whether the Nigerian state remains bound by law or has become an arbiter above it.

“It is the jurisprudential maxim in every English Common Law country in the world, (which Nigeria is one) that you cannot place illegality on legality and expect it to stand. The concern about placing an illegality atop legality should agitate the minds of those involved in this high profile case, as the Supreme Court’s focus on jurisdiction over due process undermines the rule of law.

“The unimpeachable Court of Appeal’s 2022 ruling, which discharged Kanu, cited breaches of fair hearing rights, aligning with the municipal laws of both Kenya and Nigeria and international law, but the Supreme Court prioritized domestic executive convenience over and above the rule of law, highlighting a deep controversy.

“The Supreme Court ruling by Justice Garba sets a dangerous precedent for future cases, potentially weakening due process protections in extradition and related cases, risking increased international criticism.”

Tricycle kills masquerade in Anambra

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday in the Anambra State capital of Awka, as a tricycle operator fatally struck a boy dressed as a masquerade, crushing his head and resulting in instant death.

The incident, which cast a pall over the city, took place amidst early festivities and public processions associated with the upcoming Imo Awka Festival an annual traditional celebration held every May in honour of the town’s deity, symbolised by a monkey. According to eyewitnesses, the young victim, adorned in full masquerade regalia, was among a group of youths parading the streets to raise awareness ahead of the festival’s official commencement. These pre-festival processions often include displays of traditional masquerading, mock combat using canes, and sometimes road blockades in anticipation of monetary gifts from motorists.

An eyewitness, Mr Iyke Orji, recounted the horrific scene to newsmen: “This afternoon (Sunday) in Awka, Imo, Awka masquerades were seen everywhere. One small boy (in a costume) masquerading was hit by a Keke NAPEP and his head was crushed. It was indeed a sad day.” The tricycle driver involved in the fatal accident was reportedly apprehended at the scene by local authorities.

The Imo Awka Festival, despite its cultural significance and wide participation, has in previous years been marred by incidents of violence and loss of life. The recurring fatalities have prompted growing public concern over the safety protocols and the necessity of certain traditional practices associated with the festival.

This year’s Imo Awka Festival is officially scheduled to begin on 19 May and culminate on 24 May.

Suspected herdsmen free victim in Delta after collecting N5m, food items

Bright was abducted on Friday night when he went to buy food.

His abductors earlier demanded fifty million naira for his release.

Addressing open grazing issue in FCT requires caution – Wike

By Abah Sunday, Abuja

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike, has stated that he is threading cautiously over the issue of open grazing across the nation’s capital.

Wike made the remark during a monthly media parley, held on Monday in Abuja, emphasising that governance in Nigeria is a complex and challenging task.

“There are many complexities involved, and one has to proceed with caution and a deep understanding of the issues, especially given the numerous crises facing the country.

“We must be careful not to worsen the situation. The truth is, no one is happy seeing cows roaming the streets, but governance isn’t like running a private business—you can’t act on impulse.

“We’re doing everything within our capacity to address the matter. For instance, before I assumed office, about 1,000 hectares of land had been allocated for grazing reserves.

“If I told you the kind of resistance and battles we’re facing over it, you’d understand the challenges involved.”

“The land has been heavily encroached upon by various individuals, including land grabbers, which poses a significant challenge. However, it’s an issue we are committed to resolving—though we must proceed with caution,” the FCT Minister said.

FCT Fire Service threatens to sue road blockers during emergency

By Abah Sunday, Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Fire Service says it reserves the right to take legal action against individuals who obstruct its vehicles during emergency responses.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ibrahim Muhammad, made this known during an interview with journalists on Monday in Abuja.

Mr Muhammad emphasised the importance of giving the right of way to emergency vehicles, warning that failure to do so endangers lives and property.

“Anytime you see a Fire Service vehicle, you are expected to give way,” he said. “Unfortunately, in Nigeria, some people compete with us on the road. This behaviour not only affects our operations but also, puts lives and property at risk.”

He clarified that the law supported emergency services in such situations.

“If we accidentally hit your vehicle while responding to a fire emergency, you cannot sue us; rather, we have the right to sue you for obstructing our duty.”

Mr Muhammad added that while firefighters made every effort to drive cautiously, citizens must cooperate by yielding the road.

“We can use the opposite lane if necessary to reach the scene on time. The priority is to save lives and property,” he explained.

He stressed that a quick response to fire incidents was vital, especially when the extent of the blaze or possible casualties was unknown.

Mr Muhammad expressed sympathy to the families of three men who died in a recent accident involving a fire truck.

He noted that the Federal Fire Service (FFS) management had visited the bereaved family.

Mr Muhammad further stated that the likely cause of the fire outbreak at Avenue Plaza was an electrical malfunction resulting from a power surge within the facility.

He added that an investigation was ongoing to determine the value of the property lost in the inferno.

The fatal accident occurred Friday night as an FCT fire truck was returning to refill its water tank after responding to a fire outbreak at Avenue Plaza in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja.

Rivers crisis: Fubara came with two APC govs to beg me – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has confirmed that the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sim Fubara begged him for reconciliation.

Wike said Fubara visited him with two governors of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to seek reconciliation.

He disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja yesterday.

Wike and Fubara have been at loggerheads since the latter assumed office as governor in 2023.

The crisis led to President Bola Tinubu suspending Fubara for six months after declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, while appointing a Sole Administrator.

However, Wike said Fubara needs to take certain necessary steps to fully restore peace.

Wike said, “The President had called for peace severally and I can’t sit down and say no when the President has called for peace.

“Yes he came with two governors, unfortunately they are APC governors – I won’t pursue him. He said he wants peace and I also want peace.

“This means that there are open window for you and take the necessary steps that you want peace. This is a self inflicted injury, he doesn’t need it.

“When it started I called him saying this thing is not good for you because God has given it to you, why not humbly handle it and not allow people push you?”

Wike also declared that the PDP has no problem in Rivers State.

He added: “We don’t have problem with PDP in my state. Government is not the party but government could work with the party, so there is no problem with PDP in my state.

“Atedo Peterside’s comment is unfortunate, saying appointees are riff-raffs is too extreme. PHD holders are riff-raffs because they could not establish a bank. If they had established a bank, they won’t have been riff-raffs.

“These are some of the people who caused problems for the governor. When we were making this young man governor, what was Peterside’s contribution? He’s from Opobo LGA.

“How can a man give a blanket insult that people are riff-raffs? Look, whatever position you occupy, your impact on your people is key.

“When Wigwe was alive, I called him – look you are in Lagos and everyday you fly down here, what have you done for Rivers State? At the level you are, what can you say you have contributed for the development of the state?

“He looked at me and said he would return in two weeks time. He came back, he said that he has thought about it. He told me he was going to setup a world class university.”

Kidnappers demand N500,000 ransom for abducted five-year-old girl

Suspected kidnappers, who abducted a five-year-old girl, Memunah Abdulrahman, in the Ejigbo area of Lagos State, have contacted her family, demanding a ransom of N500,000.

The girl’s father, Abdurrahman Alimi, disclosed this in an interview with PUNCH Metro.

The missing girl, Memunah Abdulrahman, was abducted on March 9, 2025, while returning home from an Islamic school.

The suspect was reported to have approached Memunah and her sister near a well-known supermarket in the Ejigbo community and lured them inside.

While pretending to purchase items for them, the suspect reportedly vanished with Memunah, leaving her sister behind.

Speaking on the ransom demand on Wednesday, Alimi said that the suspects contacted him via a private number last month (April) to demand the payment.

“It was almost a month after my daughter was abducted that they called us. They hid their phone numbers and asked us to pay N500,000 before they would release my daughter. They hung up the phone and have not called back since then. I believe my daughter is still alive.

We told the police about this development. They said we should ask them to contact us via WhatsApp.

“We don’t know what the police are doing about it. On Friday, it will be exactly two months since my daughter was abducted.”

In an earlier PUNCH Metro report, the distressed father had appealed to the public for help securing his daughter’s release.

“We need help. We are pleading with anyone who may recognise the suspect to come forward,” he said. “Our daughter is only five years old, and we desperately need any assistance to bring her home.”

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Owohunwa Jimoh, had ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case.

Although the family acknowledged that SCID operatives visited the community shortly after the directive was issued, Alimi told our correspondent that they had since been left in the dark regarding the progress of the investigation.

My spirit has left Government House, says Fubara

Siminalayi Fubara, the suspended governor of Rivers, says he is not desperate to return to office nearly two months after President Bola Tinubu declared emergency rule in the state.

Fubara spoke on Sunday during a service of songs held in Port Harcourt, Rivers state capital, in honour of the late Edwin Clark, elder statesman and the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

“Have you asked yourself, do you think I’m interested in going back there? I want to ask you—don’t you see how much better I’m doing?” Fubara asked the audience at the service of songs.

“Do you think I’m interested in going back there? If I had my way, I would say this is it. This is the will of God. I don’t wish to go back there. My spirit has left that place.”

He was reacting to several tributes by members of the Rivers Elders Forum, who referred to him as “governor” and condemned his suspension.

Fubara dissociated himself from those statements, describing them as personal views not aligned with his approach.

He said such comments were unlikely to support peace in the state.

The governor also expressed concerns that actions taken by some of his backers had, in fact, worsened the crisis.

He asked the audience to focus their reflections on Clark’s life and legacy, rather than turning the event into a political protest.

Fubara and Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), have been locked in a bitter political standoff since late 2023.

In December 2024, President Tinubu stepped in and brokered a peace deal between the two politicians.

However, on March 18, the president declared a state of emergency in Rivers and suspended Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, as well as the entire state legislature.

Tinubu named Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired naval chief, as sole administrator of the state.

The development saw the federal government take direct control of Rivers, dissolving the state’s existing structures.

In response, 11 governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) approached the supreme court to challenge the legality of Tinubu’s action.

However, the national assembly asked the court to throw out the suit, describing it as legally deficient and baseless.

The national assembly also argued that the apex court had no jurisdiction over the matter and requested a N1 billion penalty against the PDP governors for what it termed a frivolous and speculative filing.

In April, Fubara reportedly met with Tinubu in London over the protracted political crisis in Rivers that culminated in his suspension.

ASUU elects Chris Piwuna as new president

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, as its new national president.

Prof. Piwuna succeeds Prof. Victor Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, who served as the union’s president since 2021.

The leadership transition was ratified at the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the union held on Sunday in Benin, Edo State, where members from various branches across the country convened to chart a new course for the academic body.

Prof. Piwuna, known for his firm advocacy for the welfare of university lecturers and reforms in Nigeria’s higher education sector, previously served as ASUU’s Vice President.

His emergence came  at a time when the union continues to engage the federal government on issues of funding, staff welfare, and autonomy of public universities.

Labour Minister seeks speedy passage of key labour laws

Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, said yesterday that the Ministry has concluded work on reforming the nation’s labour laws and appealed to the National Assembly to expedite the passage of such laws
Speaking at the inaugural national dialogue on the legislative agenda of the 19th House of Representatives, the minister emphasised the need for legislative support to reform the labour laws to conform to international standards.
He said the bills will soon be forwarded to the National Assembly, while praising the leadership of the House for convening the inaugural National Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda, describing it as a clear indication of the legislative commitment towards making a positive impact on our national development.
The Minister said the Dialogue represents a viable platform for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions on critical issues affecting the nation, especially as it draws participation from “policy makers, experts in various sectors, technocrats and key players in diverse fields.
He said, “I make a passionate plea to the House of Representatives to facilitate the speedy passage of national labour laws. Listing among them the Labour Standards Bill, the Collective Labour Relations Bill, and the Occupational Safety and Health Bill.
“When enacted, these bills will not only reposition Nigeria’s labour administration system, but will create an enabling environment for robust investments, enhanced productivity and attainment of social justice,” he added.
Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu, said the Dialogue was a “historic step in the collective effort to reposition the People’s House as a truly proactive, responsive, and people-centred institution.”
“Today, we gather not merely as policymakers but as custodians of Nigeria’s democratic future.
“Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Nigeria is witnessing a paradigm shift: a nation transitioning from potential to performance, from challenges to solutions, and from despair to hope”, he said.
Kalu spoke on the eight thematic pillars of the Legislative Agenda, which align with the President’s eight-point plan, including reforms in good governance, national security, social sector development, economic diversification, fiscal federalism, environmental sustainability, law reform, and inclusive governance.
“We salute Hon. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen for orchestrating this legislative surge,” he said, also commending Hon. Cyril Hart Godwin and Hon. Chinwe Nnabuife Clara for leading the charge in evaluating the implementation of the Agenda.
“The Dialogue, the first of its kind, aims to foster inclusive engagement, strengthen feedback loops between lawmakers and the public, and promote transparency in legislative work. By year’s end, it is expected to yield stakeholder-informed policy briefs, enhance understanding of the Agenda, and be institutionalised as an annual event”.
The Deputy Speaker also acknowledged the support of development partners, including the European Union, UK International Development, PLAC, and the National Assembly Library Trust Fund.
“Your expert guidance and technical assistance have been indispensable. As we embark on today’s sessions, let us seize this unique opportunity to interrogate, refine, and co-create the legislative toolkit that will carry Nigeria forward,” he concluded.
Executive Director of Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), Clement Nwankwo described the Dialogue as historically significant, calling it “a veritable platform for the robust articulation, analysis and appraisal of parliamentary activities towards a peaceful, prosperous, stable and sustainable nation.”
He praised the House’s eight-point Legislative Agenda, describing it as a contract with the Nigerian people and a roadmap in complementing the efforts of the Executive in navigating the nation out of turbulent waters to the safe shores of national economic prosperity.
“The 10th House shone green flags as the beacon and the bastion of our democracy. It heralds a new era of purposeful alignment with global parliamentary best practices, benchmarked by the key indicators of strategic focus, measurable impact, and parliamentary objectivity,” he stated.

Court cautions parties, adjourns suit challenging Fubara, others’ suspension

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has adjourned until May 26, 2025, the constitutional suit challenging the suspension of the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly by President Bola Tinubu.
The suit was filed by a former federal lawmaker and People’s Democratic Party Rivers State Governorship aspirant in the 2023 general election, Dr. Farah Dagogo.
President Tinubu had, on March 18, 2025, declared a State of Emergency in Rivers State, citing security concerns.
He further announced the suspension of the state’s democratically elected leadership and appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rated).as the Administrator of Rivers State.
In response, Dr. Dagogo filed Suit No: FHC/PH/CS/50/2025 on April 9, 2025, arguing that the President’s actions were ultra vires and lacked any constitutional backing.
At the hearing yesterday, counsel to the plaintiff, Cosmas Enweluzo, SAN, informed the court that all defendants had been duly served and expressed readiness to proceed with the case.
The defendants in the suit include President Bola Tinubu, Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retired), Rivers State Administrator.
Of all the named defendants, only the fifth defendant, Vice Admiral Ibas (retired), appeared through his counsel, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN, who requested additional time to respond to the originating summons.
After hearing from both counsels, Justice Adamu Mohammed granted the request but cautioned that the matter would proceed on the next adjourned date regardless of further delays.
Speaking to journalists after the court session, Enweluzo reiterated that President Tinubu acted outside the Constitution.
He stated, “The case challenges the President’s unilateral appointment of an Administrator for Rivers State and the suspension of duly elected officials, including the Governor, Deputy Governor, and House of Assembly members.
“The President cannot act as a ‘Tin god’. He does not have the constitutional authority to suspend elected representatives or govern over four million citizens by fiat. It is a constitutional aberration and must not be allowed.”
Enweluzo questioned the justification provided by the President for declaring a state of emergency, citing serious cars of insecurity in some parts of the North without any of such action taken.
“The insecurity narrative is unfounded. In Benue, Plateau, and Borno States, serious security challenges persist, people are being killed, and some local governments remain under Boko Haram control.
“Yet no state of emergency was declared there. Rivers State has remained relatively peaceful, ” he explained.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria commended Dr Dagogo for taking legal action in defence of the Constitution.

Enweluzo noted, “We are grateful for principled leaders like Dr. Farah Dagogo who are willing to defend the Nigerian Constitution. Citizens have a right to be governed by officials they have elected and represented by legislators of their constituencies in Degema, Bonny, and others.”
Explaining the reason for the adjournment, Enweluzo said, “Counsel for the fifth defendant informed the court that their staff were at the Registry filing processes in response to our originating summons.
“They requested an adjournment to complete their filings. In fairness, and since it was their first request, we agreed. The court, therefore, adjourned to May 26, 2025. If delays persist beyond that, the court will be entitled to proceed with the case.”
He added that while all other defendants have been duly served, none have filed a memorandum of appearance, conditional appearance, or any legal response to the suit.
Counsel to the fifth defendant, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN, declined to comment on the proceedings.
