IPOB legal team challenges legality of Nnamdi Kanu’s trial, cites jurisdictional, legal violations

The legal team representing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has raised fresh objections to the ongoing trial of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), leader, insisting that the proceedings lack legal merit and contravene both Nigerian and international laws.

In a statement signed by Onyekachi Ifedi, Esq., on behalf of IPOB’s Directorate of Legal Affairs and Global Public Communication, the group argued that the current trial, being held before Justice Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja, is fatally flawed by procedural and jurisdictional infractions that, in their view, render it unconstitutional.

According to the statement, Section 76(1)(d)(iii) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 stipulates that a person may not be tried for a terrorism-related offense unless such an offense has been evaluated and recognized in the country from which the individual was extradited.

The IPOB legal team asserts that no such legal process occurred in Kenya prior to Kanu’s transfer to Nigeria, thereby questioning the jurisdiction of any Nigerian court to hear the case.

The team also invoked the Principle of Specialty, a doctrine in international law which limits prosecution to charges explicitly stated in a lawful extradition request.

They maintained that Kanu was not formally extradited from Kenya, and alleged that his transfer to Nigeria did not follow due process under international legal frameworks.

Additionally, the IPOB counsel cited Section 45 of the Federal High Court Act, which states that terrorism-related cases should be tried in the jurisdiction where the alleged offense occurred or where its consequences were felt.

The group contended that the acts attributed to Kanu took place outside Nigeria, notably in the United Kingdom and Kenya, challenging the choice of Abuja as the venue for the trial.

While reiterating their respect for the judiciary, the statement emphasized that Kanu’s presence in court should not be construed as acceptance of the court’s jurisdiction or legitimacy of the charges.

The group called on the Nigerian government to end what they described as a legally unsustainable process.

The statement concluded with a call for the federal government to reconsider its position and halt the trial, warning that the case could have broader consequences in the arena of international law and public opinion.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is currently facing charges related to terrorism, incitement, and other allegations brought by the federal government.

His arrest and trial have drawn significant local and international attention, particularly regarding the legal circumstances surrounding his return to Nigeria.

Release Nnamdi Kanu, others – MASSOB tells Tinubu

The leadership of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, led by Uchenna Madu has urged President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government to release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other pro Biafra agitators detained across the country.

This was contained in a statement issued yesterday by its National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel.

MASSOB also noted that South-east was excluded from the Nigeria Student Loan, accusing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, of consciously and systematically frustrating the high average examination score of South-eastern region students.

According to MASSOB, no working seaport in the South-east zone and no South-east person among the senior officials of Nigeria National Petroleum Company, Federal Inland Revenue  Service and Nigeria Customs Service.

Currently, the federal government of Nigeria had closed down the Enugu international airport in South-east zone including the railway transportation service in the South-east zone.

This is coming ahead of the 2025 Biafra Anniversary celebration on May 30.

May 30th, 2025 is a national day of introspection and self examination for the people of Biafra after 58 years of our forceful and deceitful actions of General Gowon popularly known as reintegration, reconciliation and rehabilitation back to Nigeria.

Earlier this month, MASSOB said all markets, schools, public and private motor parks in the South-east will be shut down on May 30, 2025.

Eight abducted WASSCE students, 11 others freed in Rivers

Nineteen people, including eight students sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), have been rescued after being kidnapped by suspected pirates.

The victims were held for 21 days in the Bille waterways area in the Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

They were freed on Monday evening by a local security group known as the Royal Fouchee Security Services, also called the Amama Soldiers.

The group is led by Asari-Dokubo, a former militant leader and now the traditional ruler of the Torusaramapiri community in Degema.

The victims were kidnapped on May 6, when pirates attacked two boats heading to Bille.

Everyone in the boats was taken, including the students. After the attack, there were many calls for their release.

The kidnappers later contacted families and demanded N100 million in ransom.

Speaking about the rescue, Asari-Dokubo said he and his team began the operation on Sunday after being asked to help by the Department of State Services. He also said that one of the victims had earlier paid N10 million to the kidnappers but later helped them locate the hideout.

“These people were kept in terrible conditions for 21 days. They were starved and badly treated. One of them, who was released after paying N10 million, helped us find the kidnappers’ camp,” he said.

Asari-Dokubo also raised concerns about a missing soldier, Lance Corporal Salihu Ibrahim, who was in one of the boats. Only his uniform and ID card were found, and he fears the soldier may have been killed.

One of the suspects arrested, named Victor Friday, claimed he didn’t take part in the kidnapping. He said he only stayed in the camp and was used to running errands.

He named a man called Kentebe from Bayelsa State as the leader of the gang, who is now on the run.

A rescued victim, Victor Akinloye, who was also a boat driver, said they were beaten, stripped naked, and their phones and ATM cards were taken.

The kidnappers also withdrew money from their accounts.

Akinloye said he recognised the area where they were held. A few days later, he helped lead the rescue team to the location.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the rescue.

“Yes, I can confirm they were rescued on Monday evening through a joint effort by the police and the local security group,” Iringe-Koko said.

Fallen power cable electrocutes three-year-old in Anambra

Grief struck at Isaiah Morah Close, Awka, the Anambra State capital, when a fallen high tension cable belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, (EEDC) electrocuted a three-year-old girl in the area.

The girl was said to have stepped on the cable, not knowing there was current in it.

It was gathered that the high-tension cable had fallen the previous day and all efforts to get it removed failed.

Some residents in the area who spoke to journalists on Monday, said the officials of the power company who were contacted demanded the sum of N30,000 to fix the cable and after the money was paid to them, they still did not come.

A resident identified simply as Uche said, “The electric cable fell on Friday and it was only fixed on Sunday, May 24, 2025, after it had electrocuted the girl.

“The incident was posted on our WhatsApp group and a team was dispatched by the power company to immediately respond, but they could not locate the place. After allegedly trying their best, they went back to the office.

“The three-year-old girl who was electrocuted lived with her mother and other people in a house under construction and partly abandoned in the street.

“They usually go out to fetch water from other compounds. But unfortunately, on that fateful day, as she was coming home, she stepped on the fallen cable not knowing that the cable had power.

“The innocent girl went near and was electrocuted. When other children saw what happened, they shouted and the adults who ran out carefully pulled her off, rushing her to Awka Medical Centre at Udoka gate, but she did not make it.”

When contacted on Monday, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not confirm the incident.

Ikenga said there was no report of such before the command.

Also, the Communication Manager for the EEDC, Emeka Ezeh, when contacted, simply said, “I don’t have such information before me. Please, I have to enquire and get back to you

Suspected herders kill pastor, seven others, in fresh Plateau attacks

At least eight people have lost their lives in fresh attacks on communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

It was gathered that the victims included a pastor and seven natives who were reportedly killed by suspected herders’ militia.

The Chairman of Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, Kefas Mallai, who exclusively confirmed the killings yesterday, said the attacks began on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at around 10 pm, when Pastor Mimang Lekyil of COCIN LCC Kwakas-Mushere was attacked and killed in the pastorium.

He added the pastor’s wife was shot in the leg and is currently receiving treatment at Jos University Teaching Hospital.

According to him, the situation escalated on Monday, when native youths who were angered by attacks reportedly razed Fulani structures in the same Kwakas area where the pastor was killed.

However, security personnel intervened and brought the situation under control.

Kefas further stated that tragically, the same day, at around 9 pm, the herders’ militia mobilised themselves and attacked the neighbouring Mbor community of Mushere and killed seven natives.

The chairman said the corpse of the pastor has been deposited in the mortuary at Luna Hospital, in Bokkos.

Kefas said,” In the afternoon of Monday, 26th May 2025, native youths who were angry with the unprovoked attack and killing of the pastor reportedly razed Fulani structures in the same Kwakas area where the incident took place, but security personnel intervened and brought the whole thing under control.

“They were making efforts to calm the angry youths in the community but at about 9 pm last night Monday, 26th May 2025, seven natives were attacked and killed at Mbor community of Mushere by suspected herders. Security agencies were alerted but before their arrival, the casualties were recorded.

“Due to inadequate presence of security personnel in the area right now, some native women and children are leaving Kopmur, and surrounding settlements near Mbor to any seemingly safer places.

“I have just called the DPO to let him know that the people in the affected community  are calling me and that there is no presence of security men there and his number is not going through but I called the DCO who told me that they have already deployed security men to the area.

“This is the situation in these communities of Bokkos LGA right now as I speak with you

Contacted, the Spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred said the situation was under control adding that the state Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina had deployed security operatives to maintain law and order in the affected communities

Oil marketers bag 14 years each for N2.2bn subsidy scam

The Lagos Special Offences Court has sentenced two oil marketers, Mamman Nasir Ali and Christian Taylor, to 14 years imprisonment each for their involvement in a N2.2bn oil subsidy fraud.

Justice Mojisola Dada, presiding over the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, delivered the verdict, finding the defendants guilty of defrauding the Federal Government through false claims related to the petroleum subsidy program.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which prosecuted the case, confirmed the conviction via its official X platform yesterday.

The EFCC stated that the judgment “underscores the unwavering commitment of the Commission to combating economic crimes and ensuring justice is served.”

Ali and Taylor were re-arraigned alongside their company, Nasaman Oil Services Limited, on an amended 57-count charge, following new findings during the ongoing investigation.

Their initial arraignment had been on a 49-count charge, which included conspiracy to obtain money by false pretence, forgery, and the use of false documents.

According to court documents, the fraudulent activities involved inflated claims for the importation of Premium Motor Spirit.

One of the charges detailed how, on or about November 9, 2011, the defendants, along with others still at large (Oluwaseun Ogunbambo and Olabisi Abdul-Afeez), conspired to “obtain the sum of N749,991,273.36… from the Federal Government of Nigeria by falsely claiming that the sum… represented subsidy accruing to Nasaman Oil Services Ltd under the Petroleum Support Fund for the importation of 10,031,986 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which Nasaman Oil Services Ltd purported to have purchased from SEATAC Petroleum Ltd of British Virgin Islands and imported into Nigeria through MT Liquid Fortune Ltd Ex MT Overseas Lima, which representation you knew to be false.”

Another count further elaborated on their scheme, stating that on or about April 11, 2011, the defendants fraudulently “obtained the sum of N1,480,074,125.61… from the Federal Government of Nigeria by claiming that the sum represented subsidy accruing to Nasaman Oil Services Ltd under the Petroleum Support Fund for the importation of 20,492,982.50 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which Nasaman Oil Services Ltd purported to have purchased from SEATAC Petroleum Ltd of British Virgin Islands and imported into Nigeria through MT Liquid Fortune Ex Mt. Hellenic Blue and Ex MT. Milleura, which representation you knew to be false.”

The defendants had pleaded not guilty to all charges. The case initially commenced before Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo of the Lagos State High Court, but was later re-assigned to Justice Dada following Justice Onigbanjo’s withdrawal.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by Seiduh Atteh, presented compelling evidence, including witness testimonies and various documents, all of which were admitted by the court.

In her judgment, Justice Dada reviewed the evidence and concluded that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

She emphasised that the actions of Ali and Taylor not only defrauded the Nigerian government of substantial public funds but also significantly undermined the integrity of the nation’s critical oil subsidy program.

The EFCC’s statement on X reiterated that “this verdict serves as a strong deterrent to others who may contemplate similar fraudulent activities.

Children’s Day: I see a glorious future for Nigerian children, says Uzodimma

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has expressed confidence in a glorious future for Nigerian children, assuring them that the foundation for that future is already being laid.

He urged Nigerian children never to lose hope or give in to despair, despite the tough economic times facing the world, and Nigeria in particular.

In his message to mark this year’s Children’s Day, Governor Uzodimma assured Nigerian children that both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the country’s governors are working hard to build a future they can be proud of, a future filled with progress, opportunity, and lasting development.

In a statement he personally signed, Governor Uzodimma said the groundwork was being laid for today’s children to one day inherit a prosperous and peaceful nation.

He noted that the economic reforms being carried out by the current administration are meant to strengthen the systems that support Nigeria’s growth especially in building roads, schools, hospitals, and other vital infrastructure.

He added that in Imo State, his administration has begun revitalising the health and education sectors, two pillars that are essential to helping children grow, learn, and thrive.

“My administration has invested heavily in education and health, two key areas that help children dream big and achieve their goals. I assure you, your future is bright,” he stated.

However, he encouraged Nigerian children to believe in their country and work hard to grow, especially by learning, staying in school, and building useful skills for the future.

He urged them to stay away from bad influences like cultism, theft, and other harmful behaviours that could ruin their future.

Uzodimma also encouraged children to appreciate the sacrifices their parents make by showing them love, respect, and obedience.

Alleged N4bn fraud: Judge’s suspension stalls EFCC’s case against ex-Gov. Obiano

The suspension of Justice InyangEkwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja stalled the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s money laundering case against former Anambra Governor, Willie Obiano.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) at its 108th meeting held between April 29 and April 30, suspended Justice Ekwo.

Although the Chief Judge of FHC, Justice John Tsoho, in his May 18 press release, directed Justice M. G. Umar from Enugu Judicial Division to take over cases earlier presided over by Justice Ekwo, the new judge is yet to resume work.

A check at the court yesterday showed that sitting was yet to begin as directed by the CJ.Obiano was Anambra governor between March 2014 and March 2022.

The former governor, in a nine-count charge, was alleged to have among others, misappropriated over N4 billion from the state’s treasury.

It would be recalled that the EFCC’s lawyer, SylvanusTahir, SAN, led two witnesses in evidence in the trial of the ex-governor on Oct. 7, 2024.

A former commercial bank staff, MrUgochukwuOtubelu, had revealed how he managed the security vote account under Obiano’s government.

Otubelu, the 3rd prosecution witness (PW-3), said though he was with the bank between Nov. 2, 2008 and March 24, 2023, he said he is now a businessman.

He said that the signatories to the security vote account were the former Principal Secretary to the ex-governor, Willy Nwokoye, and the Accountant, TheophilusNweze.

He said he interfaced with them mostly on daily and weekly basis in processing their transactions.

The PW-3, who admitted that funds from the security votes account went into six companies’ account, said the money did not go to the account holders.

The EFCC also called HayatuHadejia, a Bureau De Change (BDC) operator as PW-4.

Hadejia told the court that he is a businessman, who runs BDC companies.

He said he had five companies and was invited by the EFCC as part of its investigations into the financial activities of the government of ex-governor Obiano.

Another BDC Operator, AyubaTanko, on Nov. 13, 2024, said between April and December 2017, a total sum of N416 million was paid into a company’s account he used, by proxy, in the ongoing trial of Obiano.

Ayuba, who was PW-5, said the N416 million which was received in tranches, was given back as 1.137 million US dollars equivalent.

“I am a trader. I trade in forex exchange. I trade in USDs, Euros and pounce sterling.

“I do source for customers and I do exchange and collect commission,” he said.

The PW-5 said he used two companies; Sauki Bureau De Change and Zigaziga Trading and Company Ltd for his business.

He said he was invited by the EFCC, through its Investigation Department, in 2023 and was questioned about Zigaziga Trading and Company Ltd’s account domiciled in one of the commercial banks.

When the senior lawyer asked him how much he received at the period, the witness said: “Between April 2017 to December 2017, the total money I received at that period was 416 million in naira.

“And I gave a dollar equivalent as 1, 137, 000.00 US dollars,” he said.

Ayuba said besides this transaction, he did not do any other business with the Anambra government under Gov. Obiano.

Obiano’s lawyer, OnyechiIkpeazu, SAN, during cross examination, asked the PW-5 if he had ever had any dealing with the ex-governor directly, Ayuba said: “I did not deal directly with the defendant.”

The prosecution counsel also called three bankers, who gave their testimonies in the alleged money laundering charge.

Thereports  had it that the NJC slammed a one-year suspension without pay on three serving judicial officers, including a Justice of the Court of Appeal, for various acts of judicial misconduct. The disciplinary actions were among several key resolutions reached at the Council’s 108th meeting held on April 29 and 30, 2025, under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice KudiratKekere-Ekun.

This is contained in a statement issued by the NJC’s Deputy Director of Information, KemiOgedengbe.

The NJC said Justice Jane E. Inyang of the Court of Appeal, Uyo Division, was found guilty of breaching Rule 3 (5) of the Revised Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers.

The council said, “Justice Jane E. Inyang was found to have abused his office by issuing inappropriate Ex parte Orders for the sale ofUdemeEsset’s petrol station and other businesses at the interlocutory stage of the case.

Similarly, Justice Ekwo was also suspended for one year without pay.

Controversial Kaduna-based Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has been deported back to Nigeria from Saudi Arabia where he went to perform the 2025 Hajj.

Sheikh Gumi, who confirmed this in a post on his Facebook page yesterday morning, said the development was due to some of his views of Nigerian politics

According to Gumi, although the Saudi government granted him a visa to enter the country for Hajj, he was not allowed to enter Medina to begin his religious duties.

“Due to some reasons related to my views on world politics, the authorities in Saudi Arabia do not want me to be present at Hajj even though they have granted me a visa.

It was  gathered that Gumi was part of a delegation of scholars sponsored by the Nigerian Hajj Commission, NAHCON to travel to Saudi Arabia for religious services.

Police arrest woman for stabbing co-wife to death in Katsina

The Katsina State Police Command, on Sunday, arrested a 25-year-old housewife in connection with the death of her co-wife.

The incident occurred behind Dadi Primary School, SabonGari Area of Daura town, Daura Local Government Area of the state when a domestic dispute between co-wives escalated into a fatal confrontation.

This is contained in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Katsina.

The statement reads, “On May 24, 2025, at about 2300 hours (11pm), a report was received at the SabonGari Division through one Nasir Yusuf, the husband, that he had returned home from the market and found his first wife, namely, ZainabLawal ‘F’, 30 years old, lying in a pool of blood; she had been stabbed multiple times with a knife.

“Upon receipt of the report, quickly, the DPO led a team of operatives to the scene and subsequently rushed the victim to Federal Medical Centre, Daura for medical attention, where she was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.

“During the investigation, her co-wife, one Rabi’aLabaran ‘F’, 23 years old, of the same address, was arrested in connection with the offence, where she confessed to the commission of the offence, stating that a misunderstanding with the deceased led to a scuffle and the tragic incident. Investigation is ongoing.

“The Commissioner of Police, Katsina State Command, CP Bello Shehu, urges members of the public to shun all acts of domestic violence and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, instead seeking legal means for redress in cases of disputes, as vigilantism only perpetuates harm and undermines the rule of law.”

Man bags life jail for defiling stepdaughter

A High Court sitting in Ado-EKiti yesterday sentenced one Jayeoba Oluwafemi, 56, to life imprison for defiling his 14-year-old stepdaughter.

The 56 year old convict was arraigned before Justice AdekunleAdeleye on Dec. 4, 2020 on one count charge of defilement.

The charge said the defendant on October 26, 2020 at Ado Ekiti defiled the 14 years old girl (names withheld), which is contrary to Section 31 (2) of the Child’s Right Law, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

The victim, in her testimony before the court, said, “My mother got married to the defendant, we were not living together but he used to sleep in our house especially when my mother was not at home or travelled.

“On October 26, 2020, my mother travelled to Lagos and the defendant slept in our house, at midnight he forcefully had sex with me and thereafter, blood was gushing out of my virgina. I called my mother the following morning to inform her but the defendant denied.

“He continued this act anytime my mother was not around, I used to tell my mother on her arrival but she did nothing about it. When he noticed that I was telling my mother about his continuous sexual activity with me, he started threatening me.

“One day, he wanted to beat me and I ran out of the house, I met one woman on the road, I told her what happened and she directed me to the governor’s office to lodge official complaint which led to his arrest.”

To prove his case, the prosecutor, Julius Ajibare called six witnesses and tendered the defendant’s statement and medical report as exhibits.

The defendant was also represented by his defense counsel, OladeleAdedeji, who called one witness.

In his judgment, Justice AdekunleAdeleye said, “I am of the humble view that the sexual intercourse sessions were on several occasions, it was not a one off affair.

“And upon careful analysis of the entire circumstance of this case, the change in story or outright denial by the defendant is an afterthought.

“The prosecution has established the offence of defilement against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt. He is accordingly found guilty as charged and hereby sentenced to life imprisonment as provided for under the provisions of Section 31 (2) of the Child’s Rights Law, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.”

Wike justifies sealing of PDP secretariat, FIRS office, others

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), NyesomWike, after carrying out hist threat to seal the National secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party and 4,973 other properties who violated the law on payment of Ground Rent, has provided justification for the exercise.

At exactly 2:06 pm, a group of FCTA staff locked the entrance gate of Wadata Plaza, the PDP’s national secretariat located in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

This action followed the FCTA’s recent announcement on Friday stating its intention to reclaim properties affected by the revocation of 4,794 land titles due to non-payment of ground rent spanning 10 to 43 years.

Briefing journalists shortly after the exercise, the Minister who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, LereOlayinka, explained that “we are not here for politics.

“If you are talking about political witch hunt, we have been to Ibro hotels, we have been to Access Bank, we have been to FIRS, we have been to Total Petrol Station, we are also still going to other places, and tomorrow we will go to other places.”

According to him ,”This exercise will continue as long as we are able to conclude the taking possession of those over 4,000 properties. So, are we also going to say all those ones that I mentioned are for politics?”

Also speaking, the director of Land in the FCTA, ChijiokeNwankwoeze, said the property holders were duly notified.

“Senator SamailaMamman Kofi was duly served the revocation notice and out of abundance of caution, we also came here and pasted the revocation notice served on SamailaMamman Kofi at his Kaduna address, the address on record,” Nwankwoeze said.

“SamailaMamman Kofi is the owner of the property and the address we have in our records for him is that of Kaduna and we duly served him.

“This is a copy of the revocation notice and the evidence of service, this is him, served since the 14th of March 2025 and a copy of this was duly pasted at the gate of this building.”

On claims by the FIRS that it had paid the ground rents for the building that was sealed, Nwankwoeze said: “No, we keep good records. In this case, we are talking of 28 years.

“The owner of this property, SamailaMamman Kofi, was owing 28 years ground rent. And then FIRS is 25 years. So we keep proper records.

“When you pay your ground rent, you will have to be issued with receipt of payment. Let the FIRS present the receipt of payment issued by the Lands Department or the FCTA, showing that they paid ground rent for 25 years on the property we went to. So those claims are not completely true.

“Some of them, like FIRS, they claim they own the property. But in our records, they don’t. If you buy property, you have to register your interest.

“The property which FIRS is occupying, where we just sealed before coming here, is owned by Fortunate Case Limited (not sure about this name). When we got there, they said they own the property. But obviously, they didn’t do what they needed to do, so that they will be recognized as the owners.”

In a reaction to the sealing off of properties exercise, the Human Rights Writers Association, (HURIWA) led by its coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said “Failure to pay ground rent by an “owner” should be an irregularity and such attracting penalty and not forfeiture as a primary recourse.”

We’re not behind 776 deaths, economic losses across South-East – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, said it is not responsible for 776 deaths and substantial economic losses across the South-East region of the country.

This was contained in a statement by the group’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful.

The statement was in reaction to the allegations contained in a recent report by SBM Intelligence, which blamed IPOB for the deaths and substantial economic downturn in the region.

IPOB in the statement rejected the findings, describing them as inaccurate and unsubstantiated.

The group said it officially cancelled the Monday sit-at-home directive in 2021, and its detained leader, MaziNnamdiKanu, had previously disowned any individuals or groups acting independently to enforce such orders.

“Any incident attributed to sit-at-home actions should not be automatically linked to IPOB,” the group stated. Our organization has made it clear that we do not support any form of violence or disruption of public life,” it said.

IPOB maintained that no credible evidence had been presented directly connecting it to the incidents cited in the report.

The group called for independent verification, urging those responsible for the report to provide substantiation through appropriate legal channels.

It also questioned the timing of the report’s publication, noting that it came shortly before Biafra Heroes Day — an annual commemoration held on May 30 to honour individuals who died during the Nigerian Civil War.

“This period is deeply significant to our members and supporters. We hope that discussions and publications around this time would reflect sensitivity and balance,” IPOB added.

A group under the aegis of the PDP Frontiers for Change and Progress, has slammed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, NyesomWike, saying he is the real betrayer and architect of the crisis bedeviling the party.

The group urged the minister to honourably leave PDP instead of staying behind to cause confusion, accusing him of standing truth in the head and playing to the gallery.

The group was reacting to Wike’s allegation that Governor SeyiMakinde of Oyo State, and his Enugu State counterpart, Peter Mbah, were betrayers and the architects of the party’s protracted crisis.

Thereports  saidthat Wike had in a strong-worded statement on Sunday, announced his pullout from all ‘gentleman agreements’ on how to resolve the party’s leadership tussles, vowing to fight to finish.

In the statement, Wike had claimed that Makinde and Mbah made reconciliation of the party’s crisis impossible, accusing the duo of reneging in a purported agreement earlier reached by key stakeholders.

The former Rivers State governor said the stakeholders had earlier agreed that Senator Samuel Anyanwu be retained as the PDP’s National Secretary, and that all suits against the Rivers’ emergency rule be withdrawn, conditions he accused Makinde and Mbah of violating.

However, the PDP support group, in a swift reaction, accused Wike of being smart by half, and mounting smear campaign to blackmail Mbah and Makinde.

National Coordinator of the group, Emeka Yellow Ikpegbu, expressed surprise that Wike who he alleged had been the APC mole in PDP, could accuse genuine and committed stakeholders of what himself is guilty of.

According to Ikpegbu, Wike and his boot-lickers dragging the leadership of PDP in some of the states are the destabilising forces on a mission to sink the party.

”Instead of masquerading as a peace maker while he is the one igniting the fire, Wike should better leave PDP.

“Wike should stop pretending. We know his spirit has since left PDP after sabotaging the party in 2023. Now is the time to completely pull out of the party, and not just pulling out of the so-called gentleman agreement. We want him to also pull out of the PDP He has given us enough discomfort,” Ikpegbu said.

“The committee was constituted based on the vision of Mr President and the Ministry’s housing reform drive to ensure that the recovered property is swiftly transformed into liveable, secure, and affordable homes for the benefit of Nigerians,” he said.

Dangiwa underscored the importance of technical expertise and institutional integrity in executing the assignment, noting that committee members were selected from key departments within the Ministry.

“Nigerians are watching and expect results. They want to see homes completed and allocated transparently. They want to see the government working for them,” Dangiwaemphasised, urging committee members to collaborate effectively and remove unnecessary bottlenecks.

He charged them to adopt a fresh mindset, stating, “Think outside the box. Be results-oriented.”

The committee is chaired by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, ShuaibBelgore, and includes senior directors and aides from the technical, financial, engineering, planning, procurement, and media departments.

The committee’s Terms of Reference include conducting a thorough structural and integrity assessment of the buildings, determining the number and condition of housing units, and valuing existing work through proper surveying and market evaluation.

“The committee has been tasked with ensuring the recovered estate undergoes a comprehensive technical assessment, is strategically completed, and disposed of transparently and cost-effectively, in line with national housing delivery objectives,” he said.

He added that the success of the assignment would serve as a model for transforming recovered public assets into impactful infrastructure.

“The successful execution of this assignment will serve as a benchmark for converting recovered public assets into infrastructure that directly benefits the people,” he concluded.

FIDA launches nationwide advocacy for reserved seats for women in parliament

The initiative, backed by UN Women Nigeria and funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), is part of the broader Advancing Women’s Inclusion and Representation in Leadership and Political Processes in Nigeria project. It will be implemented across nine states: Anambra, Enugu (South East), Edo (South South), Oyo (South West), Kogi (North Central), Adamawa (North East), and Sokoto, Kano, and Jigawa (North West).

In a statement, FIDA Nigeria’s Country Vice President, Mrs. Eliana Martins, said the campaign seeks to foster public consensus and drive advocacy for constitutional amendments that will secure special reserved seats for women in Nigeria’s National and State Assemblies.

The initiative targets the inclusion of 37 additional reserved seats each in the Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives, and up to 108 in State Houses of Assembly.

Mr. Fikih Obaro, Senior Manager for Programs and Partnerships at FIDA Nigeria, emphasized that the effort was focused on creating a gender-responsive legal framework through strategic collaborations with both governmental and non-governmental actors.

“Aggregating demands and advocacy asks through a draft memorandum from citizens towards improving women representation in governance and political process.

“Securing commitments from National and State Houses of Assembly by building a passage for 74 additional exclusive Special Seats for Women at the National Assembly and 108 Seats at the State Houses of Assembly through Constitutional Amendment/Review process”, Obaro added.

Mrs. Martins therefore encouraged the public to support all efforts to advance the representation and participation of women in Nigerian politics.

NASS may pass harmonised tax reform bills this week

The National Assembly may consider and pass the harmonised tax reform bills before the end of May,

The four tax bills were sent to the joint harminisation committee made up of members of the Senate and the House of Representatives to work on and agree on gray areas in the bill before it is transmitted to th President for his assent.

The four bills were passed by the House of Representatives in March before they went on sallah and Easter break, while the Senate passed its own version shortly after resumption from the sallah break.

As a result of gray areas in the version passed by the two chambers, a joint committee was set up by the leadership of the two chambers to harmonised those gray and arrive at a common document.

Indications that the harmonised bills will be passed is contained in a post on the X-handle of the Chairman of th House Committee on Finance, James Abiodun Faleke who led the House delegation for the harminisation.

Faleke said in the tweet that “the Conference Committee set up by the House and the Senate on the Tax Reform Bills has successfully concluded its work.

“The joint committees thoroughly reviewed all sections and addressed the grey areas of the four Bills, examining each clause strategically and resolving contentious issues.

“After an intensive deliberation that stretched through Thursday night, all day Friday, and into the early hours of Saturday, I am pleased to report that the Bills are now ready for presentation to both the House and the Senate for final passage.

“I would like to specially appreciate the Senate Conference Committee, ably led by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, the Distinguished Senator Sani Musa, as well as all members of the Senate Conference Committee.

“I also extend heartfelt gratitude to my colleagues on the House Conference Committee, which I had the honour to lead, for their unwavering commitment to the Nigerian people.

“We are truly grateful for your dedication and resilience in bringing this important task to a conclusion.”

Traditional rulers were paid N10k monthly before Otti increased it –Monarch

The Traditional ruler of Okahia autonomous community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, Eze Okey Ananaba, said that Governor Alex Otti increased the welfare package of traditional rulers in the state when he learned about the pittance they received as a monthly stipend.

Ananaba, who stated this while commending the governor for what he described as his modest achievements in less than two years in office, disclosed that some traditional rulers were receiving N10,000 as a monthly stipend.

He said the governor had increased the monthly stipend to N250,000 with other incentives and commended him for appreciating traditional rulers’ role in the state’s governance.

The monarch also urged traditional rulers in the state not to sabotage the governor’s efforts to bring development to all parts of the state.

He said, “Traditional rulers in Abia State have never had it this good since the return of democracy in 1999. Despite our roles as custodians of culture and traditions and maintenance of law in our communities, we were treated unfairly by previous administrations in the state. We supported each of them, and they completed their respective eight-year tenure. Our stipends under those administrations were nothing to write home about, revolving between N10,000 and N30,000. The leaders got N30,000 monthly, leaving us in excruciating pain. The past administrations hardened their minds against traditional rulers despite all pleas for them to have a rethink. But unexpectedly, Governor Alex Chioma Otti heard our complaints and reviewed our stipends to a minimum benchmark of N250,000 monthly traditional ruler, which we receive on the 28th of every month alongside civil servants in Abia State.

“In celebration of Governor Alex Chioma Otti’s eventful and impactful administration in less than two years, I make this strong call on traditional rulers in Abia State to remain resolute and continue to support the governor’s efforts in bringing development to all parts of the state.

“As witnesses to the infrastructural changes ongoing in the state, especially in the areas of Road, particularly Port Harcourt Road, Aba, retrofitting of Health centers and schools, we have no other better position to take than to continue to support his administration . Politics, they say, is a game of interest, but let us continue to support Governor Otti, to avoid returning to those dark days of agony.”

Poultry farmers lament low egg consumption, blame greedy retailers

Poultry farmers lament low egg consumption, blame greedy retailersThe Poultry Association of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, has attributed the reduced patronage of eggs to low purchasing power, greedy retailers, and low consumption.

The PAN Lagos Chairman, MojeedIyiola, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos.

Iyiola noted that eggs remain the cheapest source of protein in the country, but blamed retailers and low purchasing power among the reasons for the decline in egg consumption.

“The reduced patronage of eggs in the poultry sector is not peculiar to farmers alone.

“Virtually all consumable goods are experiencing low patronage due to the low purchasing power in the economy.

“Perhaps salaries are insufficient to meet the nutritional demands of families, or other expenses take priority over purchasing eggs.

“Eggs are still the most affordable protein you can buy in Nigeria; they are not as expensive as people think.

The price from poultry farms is less than N5,500 per crate. However, individual consumption patterns vary.

“The perception that eggs are expensive is simply fixed in people’s minds,” Iyiola said.

He reiterated that the greed of retailers and middlemen contributes to the low patronage due to their quest for increased profits.

“Retailers who buy eggs at N5,500 at the farm gate price are adding higher profits than normal for selfish gains.

“When retailers purchase a crate at N5,500, the maximum profit they should add is no more than N100 or N200.

“However, some retailers sell a crate for as high as N6,000 or N6,500, thus making more profit than the poultry farmers who do all the work.

“A profit of N1,000 per crate is excessive, so the price increase or low patronage cannot be blamed on farmers.

“Also, the cost of raw materials for production should be considered, although it is still bearable,” the PAN chairman said.

Iyiola explained that the subvention from the Lagos State Government had helped farmers subsidise costs while it lasted.

“The subvention we received from the Lagos State Government was temporary and helped us while it lasted, but it is currently on hold.

“We are still expecting palliatives from the government to further cushion production expenses in the sector,” he said.

On his part, Joel Oduware, a poultry processor, said the general economic downturn could be blamed for the hike in prices and low purchasing power globally.

“Generally, the low patronage of eggs is due to the economic downturn, low disposable income, and reduced purchasing power.

“Despite schools resuming, we expected an increase in egg consumption compared to when they were on recess, but consumption remains low, especially in some northern states and other regions.

“Basically, the general economic strain is the reason for low patronage. The global financial situation is also affecting our industry; people cannot afford to eat as comfortably as before.

“We could reduce the price of eggs somewhat instead of experiencing a constant glut in the sector.

“However, any price reduction must factor in production costs,” Oduware said.

Community protests alleged incessant arrests, cries to IGP, PSC

The people of Obegu Awkunanaw community in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State have protested alleged constant arrest and harassment of their sons by men of the Nigeria Police.

The distressed community is now appealing to the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission to intervene.

Speaking through their traditional ruler, Igwe Mich Nnukwu, the community linked their ordeal to an estate company.

The monarch, who spoke in an emotional laden voice, accused a company, Private Estate International West Africa Limited of coming with a drone, surveyed the whole of his community and started claiming ownership including his palace.

He claimed that his people could no longer go to farm, among other things owing to intimidation.

To press home their demand, the President General of the community, MrMichOgnonna led over five hundred youths of the area in a peaceful protest around the area.

He demanded the immediate release of their kinsman who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Ikoyi Lagos, over the land related matter.

Ogbonna alleged that some policemen were being used to arrest them on trump up charges, noting that some had been arrested, arraigned in Abuja and its environs and dumped in Keffi or Suleja prisons.

He questioned the jurisdiction of CID Lagos to effect arrest in Enugu over land matters if not intimidation.

“They arrested one of our brothers and sped up to the airport to take him to Lagos on a chartered flight.

Unfortunately, our brother collapsed as a result of assault and underline sicknesses.

“He was rushed to the airport clinic and later to the police hospital before they could stablise him,” he claimed.

Also speaking, the Traditional Prime Minister of Obegu community, Chief AndeyEgbo pointed out that the matter was already in court and wondered why the estate company abandoned all judicial processes and resorted to intimidation.

“For over one week, our people went into hiding; they deployed police from Lagos to track down some persons they perceived as leaders of the community.

Even if they succeeded in killing all of us, our children would continue from where we stopped,” he vowed.

He appealed to the IGP and the Police Service Commission to save them.

When contacted, the chief executive, Private Estate International West Africa Limited, (PEIWA), Mr Kinsley Eze neither accepted nor denied responsibility but only referred journalists to the Ministry of Lands, Chief of Staff to the Governor and the police for confirmation.

Efforts to also obtain reactions from the police were futile as of the time of this report.

Peter Obi lauds Otti two years in office, says you radio is not needed to know his achievement

Mr Peter Obi and Gov Alex Otti at the special church serviceFrom Henrietta Ashikodi, Umuahia

‎The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi has lauded

Dr. Alex Otti achievements in two years, describing two years of impactful leadership with a difference, adding that one doesn’t need to tune to the radio to know what the Governor is doing.

‎Mr. Peter Obi stated this while speaking during a ‎Special Anniversary Sabbath Service held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Aguiyi Ironsi Layout, Umuahia.

‎‎”We have come to celebrate two years with a difference. People have always said that they need eight years, they need ten years, they need twenty years. But, I’ve always said that one day can make a difference.

‎‎”Everybody is seeing it in Abia. You don’t need to tune to the radio. You don’t need people to tell you. There’s a difference. And that’s what we’re celebrating today”. Obi disclosed.

‎‎The presidential candidate called on Abians to continue to uphold the Government of Governor Alex Otti in prayers, while he urged Nigerians to pray that God touches the leaders as trustees to always use public funds to serve the people like Dr. Alex Otti is doing in Abia.

‎‎”It is difficult to govern Nigeria, especially when you want to do it right. Continue to remember the Governor and the Commissioners who are helping him in prayers. Do the same thing for Nigeria; ‎that God should touch all of us who are leaders. Touch our hearts to use public money for public good. It is not our money.

‎‎We are just trustees. Like it’s happening in Abia. We want it to happen everywhere in Nigeria.

‎‎”When I say to people, I’m not desperate to be a President, I’m desperate to see Nigeria work. We want future leaders like him (Governor Otti) to succeed”. Obi maintained.

‎‎Speaking at the church, Governor Alex Otti attributed all the modest achievements recorded by his administration within two years to God who has been inspiring and strengthening him.

‎‎He hinted that without the grace of God and his enablement, all his vision for the State would not have been made possible.

‎‎”I think, it’s 1 Corinthians 3, verse 6, I’m going up to verse 7, and it says, I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God gave the increase. I, in this case was Paul. Paul said he planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.

‎‎”And verse 7 goes further to say, neither he who planted is anything, nor he who watered, but God who gave the increase. And that’s why we are here, because we know that, we all have worked hard, but then you could work hard and nothing would come out of it, if God doesn’t give you the increase and doesn’t back you up.

‎‎”So, because we recognize that everything we have done is of the Lord, so we return all the thanks to him,”Otti disclosed.

Ihite/Uboma born Chima Okereke builds house for Umuonyeche traditional ruler

By Jude Onyenedogha

The house built for the traditional ruler of Umuonyeche Autonomous Community, Owerri Municipal Council by an indigene of Ihite/Uboma, Sir Chima Bishop Okereke has been commissioned.

Fielding questions from newsmen after the commissioning ceremony which attracted dignitaries, friends and members of both communitie _from Ihite/Uboma and Umuonyeche, Okereke described it as an event destined by God.

He said he got to know the traditional ruler through one of his friends, Mr Chima Okoronkwo, an indigene of Umuonyeche.

“On visiting his palace, I looked around and concluded that he deserves something better, considering his type of person. He is an upright person. He needs a conducive environment to administer justice to members of the community”.

He further described the project as ‘divine’ project, disclosing that he made the promise on 24th of May 2023, though the project did not start, until March 2025, and commissioned 24th May 2025, exactly two years after the promise, and just within two months of commencement.

Sir Okereke made it clear that his philanthropic gesture is well  established in his community, LGA and zone (Okigwe zone).

He said, “I started from my community. This is not my first charity project. I built a house for my own Eze. I have built houses for widows in my place. So we didn’t just start from here, because we are very conscious of the fact that charity begins from home.

I and my wife founded Bishop Ekurume Foundation, we have built schools, we have given free education for every Ihite/Uboma son and daughter who makes it to the University, we always register JAMB for candidates, about 200 people every year”.

The benefactor further made it clear that his people were happy about the gesture that was extended to Umuonyeche community, even as he described himself as a son of Umuonyeche, with a citizenship certificate.

Adding his voice, the friend through which Sir Okereke got in contact with the traditional ruler, Mr Victor Okoronkwo expressed overwhelming joy at the development which was attracted by a visit to him by his friend.

I can’t stop appreciating God who used Sir Chima Bishop Okereke to do this wonderful work for my community. What he has done in my community will remain indelible, through generations of Umuonyeche community and beyond”, Okereke enthused.

The traditional ruler, in his reaction, described the development as a big challenge to members of his community, who he said are lagging behind when it comes to honouring their traditional ruler, adding that dedication of the house has proven the doubting Thomas among them wrong.

Contributing, a cousin to the benefactor, Prince Nnamdi Ihega, who expressed excitement over the development, said he will take a clue from his uncle, who has demonstrated that it is good to help people, to show generosity, even to people who are not your close relatives.
