He described the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, as a noble endeavour, where opportunity is given to individuals to visit places, other than their own to states the diversity of the nation and that it has really succeeded in that area.

According to the Council boss, such interaction with the people from other tribes and of different tongues is expected to build a strong and egalitarian society, where people see themselves as one, irrespective of their states of origin.

Tinubu orders review of revenue deductions by FIRS, NUPRC, Customs, others

President Bola Tinubu yesterday directed a review of deductions and revenue retention practices by Nigeria’s major revenue-generating agencies.

The move is in a bid to boost public savings, improve spending efficiency, and unlock resources for growth.

The agencies include the Federal Inland Revenue Service, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

Tinubu gave the directive during the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.

The President’s directive was disclosed to journalists by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.

According to Edun, Tinubu specifically called for a reassessment of NNPC’s 30 per cent management fee and 30 per cent frontier exploration deduction under the Petroleum Industry Act.

He tasked the Economic Management Team, chaired by Edun, to present actionable recommendations to FEC on the optimal way forward.

The President said the directive was part of efforts to sustain reforms that have dismantled economic distortions, restored policy credibility, enhanced resilience, and bolstered investor confidence.

According to him, these reforms have created a transparent, competitive business environment attractive to local and foreign investors in critical sectors such as infrastructure, oil and gas, health, and manufacturing.

Reaffirming the Renewed Hope Agenda, Tinubu said Nigeria’s goal of a $1 trillion economy by 2030 requires growth of at least seven per cent annually from 2027 a target he described as “not just economic, but a moral imperative,” as higher growth is the surest path to tackling poverty.

He cited the July 2025 International Monetary Fund Article IV report, which he said endorsed Nigeria’s economic trajectory and the need for investment-led growth.

On grassroots empowerment, the President pointed to the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme a ward-based initiative covering all 8,809 wards across the country designed to lift economically active citizens through micro-level poverty reduction strategies in collaboration with states, local governments, and private partners.

Tinubu noted that public investment accounts for just five per cent of Gross Domestic Product due to low savings, stressing that optimising “every available naira” is vital, especially under current global liquidity constraints.

Edun said macroeconomic indicators were improving, with a more stable exchange rate, easing inflation, rising revenues, and debt-to-GDP ratios now within range.

He described savings as the foundation of investment and said the President’s directive aims to quickly raise public sector savings by reviewing deductions and retention practices.

Meanwhile, Edun said he presented two memoranda to Council — a $125m Islamic Development Bank financing for infrastructure in Abia State, covering 35 kilometres of roads in Umuahia and 126 kilometres in Aba; and a plan to refinance N4tn in outstanding electricity sector obligations.

The electricity debt resolution will be executed in phases, with the first phase expected within three to four weeks under the coordination of the Debt Management Office and other agencies.

Poor pay, japa syndrome threaten radiography in Nigeria – RRBN Registrar

Inadequate remuneration and occasioned japa syndrome, among others, have been identified as the major challenges facing the practice of radiography in Nigeria.

The Registrar/Chief Executive of the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria, Prof. Mark Okeji, disclosed this yesterday at Gregory University, Uturu, on the occasion of the induction ceremony of the university’s pioneer graduates of radiography.

Among other challenges, Okeji stated, “Inadequate remuneration has led to significant trained radiographer migration to other countries to look for greener pastures.”

Okeji, who was represented by Macaulay Ejimofor, therefore urged the need to train and remunerate a significant number of radiographers to discourage them from leaving the country. He implored the Nigerian government to motivate health workers, especially radiographers.

He said, “Radiography is both an art and a science. It demands not only technical competence and precision but also empathy, ethical discipline, and continuous learning and informing.

“When I assumed office as Registrar eight years ago, Nigeria had only seven universities accredited to train radiographers. Today, through the collective efforts of stakeholders, we have eighteen accredited universities, including four private institutions, offering radiography.

“In the past eight years, the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria has undergone a remarkable transformation. We have modernised our accreditation processes, strengthened the indexing and examination systems, digitised records, improved compliance monitoring, and expanded opportunities for postgraduate and continuing professional development.

“These reforms were guided by a singular vision to ensure that every radiographer trained and licensed in Nigeria is globally competitive, ethically upright, and technically sound.”

He commended the university for its commitment to quality training, compliance with regulatory standards, and investment in modern imaging facilities and for joining the circle of private universities that have successfully graduated radiographers.

In his address, the founder/proprietor of Gregory University, Uturu, Prof Gregory Ibe, said, “This milestone marks a significant achievement not only for the graduates but also for our university as we continue to make impactful strides in training health professionals for Nigeria and beyond.”

Recalling that recently, the university graduated 83 medical doctors, 21 nurses and midwives, and two physiotherapists, Ibe urged the graduates to “uphold the values of professionalism, compassion, and continuous learning as you embark on your careers”.

Ibe said, “Today marks more than just a beginning; it is a testament to the founder’s vision, dedication, and unwavering belief that brought this moment into being.

“I ask that you embrace a problem-solving spirit and expand on the tools and systems that allow you to be a successful radiologist.”

Meanwhile, the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Augustine Uwakwe, advised, “Radiography is more than just a discipline; it is a vital component of modern medicine. Your expertise will play a crucial role in diagnosing and treating patients, and your work will impact countless lives.”

In her advice, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. CelestinaNjoku, told the graduands, “You are stepping into a profession that calls for not only your knowledge and skill but also compassion, integrity and humility. The world needs healthcare professionals who are not only knowledgeable but also empathetic and who can listen and understand the human body language behind every illness.”

The Head of the Radiology Department, Dr. Christopher O. Arimie, said, “Being a professional radiographer comes with a lot of responsibilities and commitment in healthcare. The role set embodies the spirit of compassion, dedication, and excellence. You are a part of the decision-making process that affects the healthy lives of others. You are, therefore, expected to practise your trade with a high sense of responsibility and decorum.

Falana: FG has lost moral right to prosecute unruly passengers after KWAM 1 pardon

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has accused the Federal Government of undermining its moral authority to prosecute unruly air passengers following its decision to pardon Fuji star Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, over alleged misconduct at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The Inspector-General of Police’s office had opened an investigation into allegations that the musician poured the contents of a flask on a pilot, a security officer, and some passengers at the airport. However, before the probe could be concluded and charges filed, the Federal Government accepted KWAM 1’s apology and announced plans to appoint him as an ambassador for airport security protocol.

Falana criticised the move, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent.

“By this action, the Federal Government has lost its moral right to arrest and prosecute any passenger who commits an offence at any of the nation’s airports,” he said.

He cited the recent withdrawal of charges against Ms. Comfort Emmanson accused of unruly behaviour on an Ibom Air flight as evidence that the government’s selective handling of such cases risks accusations of discrimination.

“Since citizens have equal rights, obligations, and opportunities before the law, the government will henceforth be accused of discriminatory treatment whenever it prosecutes other passengers for similar conduct,” Falana added.

The Senior Advocate stressed that pardoning KWAM 1 without trial contradicts the principle of equal application of the law and erodes public confidence in the justice system.

2027: APGA founder, Chekwas Okorie convenes meeting of Igbo political leaders

The pioneer National Chairman and founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Chekwas Okorie, has called a meeting of Igbo political leaders and elite to discuss the mobilisation of Ndigbo towards 2027 elections and beyond.

The elder statesman stated: “God has blessed Ndigbo with a huge population and enviable geographical spread, which have remained largely untapped over the years. We have no excuse to lack relevance and well deserved respect in Nigeria.”

Okorie suggested that the meeting was not for 2027 alone. “We owe ourselves and our younger generations the responsibility to provide the required guidance and chart a deliberate action-plan to reverse our present unacceptable situation in a sustainable manner. It is for this and other related matters, that this meeting has become compelling and crucial.”

The meeting which is under the auspices of Igbo Agenda Dialogue, though political is non-partisan.

Wives should  beco-drivers for husbands to curb road accidents -FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps has advised that women travelling with their husbands should be co-drivers instead of rubbing powder, looking at mirrors and adjusting headgears.

The Costain Unit Commander of FRSC in Lagos State, Chief Route Commander Victor Okelola, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen.

According to Okelola, women sitting in front, making observations, cautioning and advising their husbands while driving will minimise road accidents.

“It has been observed that most times, wives do not pay attention to the driving attitude of their husbands.

“They engage in making up and tying headgears in the car.

“Also, in this age of mobile phones, they tend to concentrate on their phones and not minding their surroundings,” he said.

Okelola urged wives to be observant and caution their husbands when speeding and exhibiting other forms of reckless driving.

He said that driving above 100km per hour was dangerous.

Okelola appealed to motorists to abide by road traffic rules and regulations to ensure road safety.

He also appealed to them to ensure that their vehicles would be in good condition before embarking on a trip.

The official said that overloading, excessive speeding and driving without licence remained traffic offences,  among others.

He spoke against the backdrop of the detention of former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over alleged fraudulent withdrawals to the tune of N189 billion.

Atiku in a statement posted on his verified Facebook page yesterday, lamented that the EFCC has been turned into a political tool.

He claimed Tambuwal’s detention was solely because he was a member of the coalition seeking to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

He said: “The only reason the EFCC has detained the former governor of Sokoto State, Senator AminuTambuwal, is because he is a member of the opposition coalition. It is a continuation of the Tinubu-led administration’s agenda to harass, intimidate and decimate the opposition.

“The reality unfolding before us today is that the Tinubu administration, as with other aspects, has objectified the fight against corruption as a political tool to coerce opposition leaders into the ruling party.

“We are living witnesses to a growing trend where the state and its operators have assumed the roles of a bully by making corruption and the fight against it a political agenda.

“Certainly, that is not the objective for which I worked hard during our administration to create the EFCC.”

He noted that fighting corruption needed everyone’s support, using it as a political weapon must be condemned by the civil society and Nigeria’s international partners. Also reacting to Tambuwal’s detention, African Democratic Congress, ADC, warned EFCC against what it described as politicisation of its work, accusing the agency of carrying out media trials to harass and intimidate opposition leaders on behalf of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

In a statement by National Publicity Secretary, MallamBolajiAbdullahi, the party also flayed the ‘urgent’ investigation into the seven-month tenure of former Imo State governor, EmekaIhedioha.

While describing the actions as a calculated attempt to discredit opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections, ADC stated: “A fight against corruption that begins and ends with the opposition is not justice, it is persecution.

“These are calculated media trials, which start and end with the accusation, the scandal, and the consequent lowering of public estimation.”

The party questioned the timing of the EFCC’s probes, pointing out that Tambuwal, Ihedioha and ADC chairman, David Mark, left office years ago.

It noted that while these opposition leaders faced scrutiny, APC members with more recent and well-documented corruption cases remained untouched.

“Why now? Why these men? Why these timelines? If corruption truly has no statute of limitation, why are the EFCC’s files on APC’s own ‘big men,’ many with fresher, documented cases, gathering dust in forgotten drawers?” The party queried.

EFCC replies ADC

Replying ADC in a statement, EFCC said it was not partisan, stressing that it handles all corruption cases equally, regardless of political ties.

The statement, signed by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity, said its investigations were guided by evidence, not politics.

“Fraud is fraud, corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow, protected interest or partisan consideration in the investigation and prosecution of corruption,” Oyewale said.

The commission dismissed ADC’s claims as ‘self-serving, diversionary, narrow and idle,’ arguing that corruption allegations must be investigated regardless of timing or political context.

“Every corruption allegation deserves to be investigated, and there is no constraint of time and season in criminal investigations,” it stated.

The anti-graft agency also pointed out that it was currently investigating several senior figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, including sitting governors and ministers.

JAMB to screen over 500 exceptional underage candidates for 2025/2026 admissions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) will conduct a special screening exercise for more than 500 outstanding candidates below the age of 16 who are seeking admission into tertiary institutions for the 2025/2026 academic session.

The screening will take place from September 22 to 26, 2025.

According to resolutions from a virtual meeting held on Wednesday, the exercise will be overseen by a special technical committee set up by JAMB.

JAMB registrar, Prof. IshaqOloyede, announced that three centres have been designated for the process: Lagos (397 candidates), Owerri (136 candidates), and Abuja (66 candidates).

Oloyede explained that of the 41,027 underage candidates who sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), over 40,000 did not meet the initial qualification criteria.

The screening aims to ensure that only the most exceptional and adequately prepared underage candidates are considered for admission.

“People have been doing it in other parts of the world. We are not reinventing the wheel,” he said.

A subcommittee led by Prof. TaoheedAdedoja reported that the assessment will include subject-specific tests and a brief oral interview. JAMB will also request detailed results from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to verify the eligibility of some shortlisted candidates before interviews.

Participants in the meeting included heads of tertiary institutions, representatives of government agencies, civil society groups, members of the Nigerian Academy of Education, and the principal of the Federal Government Gifted Academy, Suleja.

Out of the 1.955 million candidates who wrote the 2025 UTME, 599 scored above 300 but fell below the minimum admission age of 16 — a policy set by the Federal Ministry of Education.

JAMB stressed that the policy is intended to ensure candidates are mentally and psychologically ready for higher education, as well as to discourage age falsification and protect young learners from undue parental pressure.

Only candidates meeting stringent academic benchmarks — at least 320 in UTME (80%), 80% in post-UTME, and 80% (24/30 points) in a single WAEC or NECO sitting — will be considered.

Four universities, namely the Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna; AbubakarTafawaBalewa University, Bauchi; University of Jos; and Osun State University, have already declared they will not admit underage candidates under any circumstances.

Woman to face trial for child theft in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 63-year-old female suspect, Ngozi Muotuanya, from the Awkuzu-Oba area of the state, for alleged child theft.

It was gathered that the suspect, who is also suspected of being a kingpin of an interstate child trafficking syndicate, was said to have allegedly stolen a male child, aged about one year, in Minna, Niger State, and sold him to an unsuspecting member of the public in Anambra State.

In a press statement on Tuesday, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP TochukwuIkenga, stated that operatives attached to the Oba Division arrested the suspect on Monday after credible intelligence gathering.

Ikenga stated that the command had relayed the information about the custodian of the child to the Niger State Police Command for possible recovery and reunion with the parents and other necessary action.

The statement read in part, “In a decisive move to unravel the mysterious disappearance of children in the state, especially in Oba and its environs, police operatives attached to the Oba Division on August 11, 2025, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended one NgoziMuotuanya, female, of Awkuzu-Oba, aged 63 years.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that sometime in 2024, the suspect allegedly stole a male child, aged about one year, in Minna, Niger State, and sold him to an unsuspecting member of the public in Anambra State.

“The said suspect later resold the child to another person.

“However, on August 4, 2025, the receiver, upon realising that the child was stolen, returned him to the principal suspect.

“The suspect, in turn, allegedly abandoned the child at an unascertained church in Minna, where he was rescued by the leader of the Igbo Community in Minna.”

According to him, the command has relayed information about the custodian of the child in Minna to the Niger State Police Command for possible recovery and reunification with his parents and other necessary action.

“The suspect shall be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for discreet investigation and prosecution,” the statement concluded.

Court jails four for vandalising power substation in Ebonyi

The High Court of Ebonyi State sitting in the Afikpo Judicial Division at Afikpo, presided over by Justice Nicholas Nwode, has sentenced four persons to seven years imprisonment following a three-count charge of conspiracy, vandalism, and stealing.

The convicts, Ikechukwu Esseh, IkedinachiUche, Ukpai Godwin, and Uchenna Kalu, were arrested on November 28, 2023, for attacking a 7.5 MVA injection substation belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc, located at Education Board Road, Afikpo, in the Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

This development was made known in a press statement released yesterday by the Group Head, Corporate Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh.

According to Ezeh, the presiding judge, after carefully reviewing all evidence presented before him and considering the high incidence of vandalism and stealing of electrical installations in Afikpo, sentenced the accused to five years imprisonment on count one, seven years imprisonment on count two, and five years imprisonment on count three, to run concurrently without option of fine.

The statement read, “The management of EEDC commended the judiciary for the judgment and appealed for speedy trial of other pending matters.

“We commend the judiciary for the judgment, and hope that this will serve as a deterrent to others out there, who may engage in such criminal act.

“The company equally appreciated the efforts of the General Youth President and Afikpo Task Force Team for mobilising to apprehend these vandals, a clear indication of community support and collaboration in the protection of electricity infrastructure.”

Ezeh appealed to customers to support efforts aimed at safeguarding installations in their neighbourhood.

He lamented how the activities of vandals have negatively impacted the company’s operations and the quality of service delivered to its customers.

“As a result, we continue to commit scarce resources to restore vandalised equipment – funds that would ordinarily be channelled to other areas of our operations that will benefit our customers,” Ezeh said.

He urged customers to remain vigilant and protect electricity installations in their neighbourhoods from vandalism, warning that such incidents inevitably lead to service failure and inconvenience.

PENGASSAN shuts OML-18 labour dispute with NNPC subsidiary

Operations at Oil Mining Lease (OML-18) in Rivers State have ground to a halt following industrial action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria.

The OML-18 facility, located along the Cawthorne Channel between Degema and Akuku Toru Local Government Areas, was shut down as the union took a stand against NNPC Eighteen Operating Limited (NEOL), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

In a strike directive issued yesterday by PENGASSAN’s Port Harcourt Zonal Assistant General Secretary, Sere Nwikiabeh, members were ordered to “withdraw your services immediately until our demands are met.”

According to the union, the shutdown followed  the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum and an additional grace period without any resolution. PENGASSAN accused NEOL management of being “adamant to our demands” despite repeated engagements.

The association said its grievances include the non-deduction and remittance of outstanding check-off dues for members attached to ND Engineering Limited, the failure to redeploy such members to other contractors, management’s refusal to respond to its Charter of Demands for the commencement of branch Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations, and the continued non-recognition of the Branch Executive Committee’s “due rights and privileges.”

In an earlier letter dated July 14, 2025, PENGASSAN accused NEOL of “persistent unfair labour practices,” including failure to remit check-off dues, refusal to address its Charter of Demands, and ignoring the elected branch leadership.

“Despite several reminders and engagements, management has continually failed to address these matters,” the letter stated.

The union warned that the strike will continue until NEOL addresses all concerns, stressing that it is prepared to take every lawful step necessary to safeguard members’ rights and interests.

The action, it added, will significantly disrupt operations at NEOL until an agreement is reached.

Police arrest 63-year-old woman for alleged child trafficking

The Police Command in Anambra has detained a 63-year-old woman, Ngozi Muotuanya, over alleged involvement in inter-state child trafficking.

The suspect was arrested by police operatives attached to Oba Division, following credible intelligence.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP TochukwuIkenga, disclosed this in a statement yesterday in Awka.

“In a decisive move to unravel the mysterious disappearance of children in the state, especially in Oba and its environs, police operatives attached to the Oba Division on August 11 acting on credible intelligence, apprehended one NgoziMuotuanya, a female from Awkuzu-Oba, aged 63-year-old,” he said.

Ikenga stated that the Command has forwarded information regarding the child’s custodian in Minna to the Niger State Police Command.

He said that police would facilitate possible recovery and reunification with the child’s parents, as well as other necessary actions.

Lagos councillor dies two weeks after swearing-in

Barely a fortnight after taking office as Councillor for Ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, Oluwakemi Rufai is dead

Rufai, the only female member of the council’s legislative arm, died in the early hours of yesterday, August 13, 2025, following a brief illness.

Confirming the development in separate statements, Ibeju-Lekki LGA Chairman, SesanOlowa, and Lekki Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Chairman, RasakiKasali, described her death as a devastating loss to both the council and the community she served.

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, also mourned Rufai’s passing.

Party spokesman, SeyeOladejo, paid tribute to her as a “rising star within the APC” whose leadership reflected “commitment, grassroots service, and gender inclusion”.

Oladejo noted that, despite her short time in office, Rufai made a lasting impression through her dedication to community development and loyalty to the party’s principles.

He extended condolences to her family, constituents, and the Ibeju-Lekki community, adding: “Her legacy of service, courage, and vision will not be forgotten.”

Stakeholders renew calls for creation of Anioma State

The Anioma State Creation Technical Committee has described the proposed state as timely and necessary to promote equity and balance in the country.

In a statement yesterday, its Media and Publicity Director, Tonnie Oganah, urged the National Assembly and President Bola Tinubu to consider creating the state.

Oganah said creating Anioma State would ensure fairness, noting that only the South-East has fewer than six states among the country’s six geopolitical zones.

He noted that Anioma people share a strong Igbo heritage, with their language predominantly Igbo.

The lawyer explained that although dialects differ, names, culture, market days, values, traditional worship, food, dressing, and world view are essentially similar.

He praised the lawmaker representing Delta North Senatorial District for leading the call for Anioma State’s creation.

Oganah urged the President to redress the injustice done to the Igbo through the new state’s creation.

He stated that all other zones have at least six states, while the South-East has only five, in spite of Igbos living in at least thirteen states.

These states include Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Delta, Rivers, Edo, Kogi, Benue, Cross River, Bayelsa, and AkwaIbom.

He said creating the state would generate jobs, contracts, and economic opportunities for the people.

“New local government areas would emerge, providing more councillors and chairmen for Anioma people,” Oganah added.

He said Anioma already has a functional capital, allowing a smooth take-off without building from scratch, which would save significant funds.

Oganah added that the state’s youths would be employed in the civil service and other sectors.

He noted that Anioma produces oil and gas commercially, alongside agriculture, fishing, and trading, reducing crime by engaging idle youths.

Oganah commended Senator Nwoko for championing Anioma State’s creation and initiating empowerment programmes for the people.

He said the senator had shown commitment to Anioma’s liberation, echoing the vision of leaders like Osadebe, NosikeIkpo, DafeIdisi, Humphrey Iwerebon, George Orewa, and NdukaEze.

The reports had it  that some regions are agitating for new states through the ongoing constitutional review by the National Assembly.

An Ikeja Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ogba, Lagos, yesterday discharged Comfort Emmanson, the passenger accused of unruly behaviour and assault aboard an Ibom Air flight.

Presiding Magistrate,Olanrewaju Salami, struck out the five-count charge against Emmanson after the police formally withdrew the case.

The charges had alleged that Emmanson disrupted the peace on board the flight, assaulted a crew member, and conducted herself in a manner capable of breaching public order.

Emmanson had pleaded not guilty at her arraignment.

However, during today’s proceedings, Police Prosecutor OluwabunmiAdeitan, informed the court that the complainant and the airline were no longer interested in pursuing the matter.

She applied for the withdrawal of the case, citing instructions from the police authorities.

Following the application, Magistrate Salami granted the request and ordered Emmanson’s discharge.

Marketers begin registration with Dangote for direct product supply

Ahead of the commencement of the direct distribution of petroleum products to retail outlets from Dangote Refinery on August 15, members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) have begun registration for the transactions.

It would be recalled that the refinery had on June 15, 2025, announced it would deploy 4,000 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tankers for nationwide distribution of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) petrol and diesel directly to marketers, petrol dealers, manufacturers, telecom firms, aviation companies, and other large consumers, bypassing traditional depots and intermediaries.

Although some other associations as the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association (NOGASA) and the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) had cried out over the plan that is targeted at phasing out middlemen like them from the value chain, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) described it as a welcome development.

Speaking with newsmen yesterday, its National President, AlhajiAbubakarMaigandi, said the plan will boost the energy security drive of the country.

He recalled the ordeal the country went through while the petrol was always scarce.

Maigandi said members of his association are enthusiastically awaiting the supply of the direct products from the refinery.According to him, the marketers have started cleaning their retail outlets of the products.Asked how far the association has gone with Dangote Refinery on the direct supply, the National President said,

“We are praying for him, let him start. We have already started cleaning our filling stations, waiting for his trucks to come and discharge. We have been holding meetings with him on how the system will go, and already we have authorised all our marketers to start registration. “Most of them have registered, just waiting for the program.

It is better. We had been crying; we were not getting products.”

He said the prices of products are not determined solely by the prices of crude oil, stressing that the exchange rate and other factors are also on the pricing template.

According to him, lower crude oil prices may not always be sufficient to reduce petrol prices.Maigandi, however, said the refinery has crashed the price to N820 per litre from N840 per litre at the gantry. He noted that marketers were already computing what the new pump price should be in order to recalibrate their pumps.

His words, “It is not only the cost of the crude oil that determines the price of PMS, even the dollar rate, exchange rate too determines the price. Tuesday,Dangote has reduced the price to N820 per litre at the gantry. We are calculating what the pump price should be. The price will be out today (Wednesday).

Why Ibom Air passenger Emmanson was charged to court and not Kwam 1 – NCAA

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, (NCAA), has explained why Comfort Emmanson, a female passenger who allegedly assaulted Ibom Air crew members, was remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, while Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as Kwam 1, who reportedly disrupted a ValueJet flight in Abuja last week, faced no such court action.

It would be Recalled  that the Uyo–Lagos incident on Sunday sparked public outrage and accusations of selective justice.

Viral videos showed Emmanson slapping and kicking airline and airport officials, including a female air hostess, after she allegedly refused repeated instructions to switch off her phone before take-off. In one clip, she was seen being dragged off the aircraft by security personnel.

This came days after Ayinde was accused of obstructing ValueJet’s morning service (Flight VK 201) to Lagos on August 5, an incident that also led to public criticism.

However, speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief yesterday, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mike Achimugu, said the two incidents were different.

His words: “There is no comparison here; it’s not a case of oranges and oranges. In the Kwam1 incident, the airline did not activate its rights to take the passenger to court, so the NCAA did what it was supposed to do by petitioning the authorities to petition the passenger.

“In the Ibom Air incident, maybe because their staff had been assaulted, the airline immediately activated its right to take up the matter, and it went to court.”

He noted that the NCAA was not directly involved in Emmanson’s case, whereas in Kwam 1’s situation, the authority issued an advisory to the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) to ban the musician from flights.

Achimugu further clarified that, contrary to earlier reports, Kwam 1 was not placed on a six-month ban but on an indefinite ban pending the outcome of investigations.

Explaining why Emmanson was placed on a no-fly life ban, Achimugu said airline operators have the legal authority to take such action.

“We have a lot of flight disruptions in Nigeria because we lack capacity. There aren’t enough aircraft in the country at the moment to meet passenger demand. So, while managing the limited capacity we have, any risk to an aircraft is unacceptable. People spend huge sums leasing or buying aircraft — do you want to destroy them?

“If anything had happened to that plane yesterday, would she have been able to afford the repairs, beyond the cost?” he asked.

Achimugu added that the aircraft involved was scheduled for another flight, and failing to remove the passenger could have caused further disruptions.

Speaking further, he assured that the Ibom Air case would be handled fairly but warned that “unruly” behaviour by passengers would not be tolerated.

“The point I am trying to make is that no matter the provocation, rest assured that you can always file your complaints with the NCAA, and it will be dealt with. On our part, we will ensure to see the end of it and that there is fairness on every side.”

In a related development, Achimugu, in a post on X yesterday, called on passengers who were on the flight to come forward with their accounts of the incident.

“Any person who was a passenger on that flight and witnessed the events that led to the fracas should, as a matter of urgency and fairness, reach out to me via DM or email at mi**************@nc**.ng,” he wrote.

“Once verified that you were actually a passenger, we can discuss and understand other perspectives to this issue. In the interest of justice, it’s necessary to hear both sides of the story. Of course, this does not negate the exhibition of unruly behaviourand its ramifications, but it will ensure that every other person who was culpable down the line is held accountable.”

Achimugu added that NCAA officers in Lagos will conduct a fact-finding mission, engaging with the police and other security personnel who handled the matter.

He stressed that the incident offers valuable lessons for all stakeholders – passengers, airline staff, and aviation security – to identify gaps and close loopholes in the system.

“It is a test for the system. No matter how fine regulations are, human behaviour will always be unpredictable. When these events occur, we are able to see the gaps and pluck loopholes.”

2027: Peter Obi may not keep one-term promise — PDP chieftain

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Umar Sani, says the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, may not keep the promise to do one term if elected as President, stressing that his supporters may not allow him to keep his word.

Sani raised this concern yesterday while answering questions on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’.

He argued that though Obi’s integrity is not in question, he may pander to pressure from his supporters.

“Now, Mr. Peter Obi could be very sincere, you know. After I made that comment, some other people followed up the comments, and some even went further to say that even if he went to the shrine to swear, they would not believe him.

“Some others said he’s just giving tales by moonlight, but by whatever way they are trying to address him, the issue I raised is not about Obi’s integrity but about how he panders to his supporters.

“Now we all know that his supporters will not agree [to the one term] because the Constitution says you are supposed to do two terms, and then you are giving promises for one term. Perhaps more importantly, if his performance in the first term is something to write home about, they will now urge him to continue,” he said.

It would be  recalled that on July 1, 2025, Obi promised to do one term of four years if elected as president in the 2027elections.

“I don’t need a day more than four years. I will show the direction of good governance,” Obi had said.

The comment has continued to generate debates among stakeholders like Sani, who says Obi’s proposal might be difficult to implement.

Sani further stated that the best bet for the PDP is a former president, Goodluck Jonathan, emphasising that the better option is in the interest of the northern region.

“So we are not looking at Jonathan from the promised angle. That has been resolved. The law has already taken care,” he said.

2027: Jonathan has magic wand to revive Nigeria’s economy – PDP chieftain Sani

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Umar Sani, has said that former president Goodluck Jonathan has the magic wand to revive Nigeria’s economy.

Sani made this statement yesterday while answering questions on ‘The Morning Brief’, a programme on Channels Television.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Sani said that the best bet for the PDP is Jonathan, whom he said is the better option in the interest of the Northern region.

“So we are not looking at Jonathan from the promised angle. That has been resolved. The law has already been taken care of.

“He cannot do more than one term. So if he cannot do more than one term by the provisions of the law and the constitution, then the only thing remaining for him is to do that one term and go away,” he said.

Sani had said that Northern Nigeria would prefer Jonathan to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate rather than Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

FG warns 3,598 workers of dismissal, orders fresh verification

The Federal Civil Service Commission has ordered 3,598 civil servants who missed the 2021 verification exercise to appear for a re-verification, warning that failure to do so will be taken as evidence of holding fake appointment letters.

EFCC Summons ex-Imo gov, Emeka Ihedioha

…as Tambuwal spends night in detention

Governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, for questioning.

According to report, the former governor will honour the invitation within the week.

This is coming after the EFCC detained, overnight, a former governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, over alleged fraud.

Tambuwal, who honoured an invitation extended to him by the commission at about 11:16 am on Monday, was subsequently taken into custody.

Sources disclosed that Senator Tambuwal was quizzed over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals to the tune of ₦189 billion.

“He wasn’t arrested as it was reported in some sections of the media. Though, when he was invited to explain what he used ₦189 billion for, he couldn’t explain. So, he was taken into custody.

“I think with that, people interpreted it to be an arrest. He will be with us till tomorrow, pending when he will be ready to provide meaningful explanations on how he spent ₦189bn when he was governor.

“Do you know what ₦189bn can do for his state (Sokoto) or the country?” one of the sources at the commission told our correspondent.

“The withdrawals are in flagrant violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022. He will have to explain how the money was spent,” the official said.

Ihedioha was the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives when Tambuwal was Speaker.

Meanwhile, a source who is very close to the former governor alleged that the issue is “100 per cent politics”.

According to him, Tambuwal’s problem started about four months ago when some persons close to the government reached out to him to back President Bola Tinubu.

“He consulted some of us around him and we wondered how can we in good conscience work with the government with the level of poverty and insecurity bedeviling the country, especially the northern region,” he said.

The source said after that, the former governor received an invitation which he honoured.

He added that later in the night, the EFCC agreed that the former governor could be bailed and his associates met the bail conditions, but the commission decided to keep him in custody till yesterday.

Another source close to Tambuwal said, “The current governor of Sokoto State was deputy governor to Tambuwal at certain time before they fell apart.

“He (Governor Aliyu Sokoto) was part of many of the decisions taken in the state during Tambuwal’s tenure as governor. So, for fairness, the EFCC ought to have mention his name in their investigation even though he has immunity for now.

“And besides Tambuwal, some of those who served under him have been invited by the EFCC for interrogation. However, what we are asking for is fairness and not vendetta. People should not be put in the spotlight for political expediency.”

Another source added that Tinubu’s ally also approached Ihedioha about six months earlier to join the Tinubu “train” and that he also has an invitation to appear before the EFCC within the week.

In a letter dated July 18th signed by Abdukarim Chukkol, Director, Investigation at EFCC, to the Secretary to the State Government of Imo State, the anti-graft agency said it was investigating a case in which they needed to obtain certain information from some state government officials.

The EFCC, therefore, requested the SSG to release the listed officials (names withheld) to attend an interview on August 11, 2025, at the EFCC’s headquarters. They are to be interviewed by the Head, Economic Governance Section -1, the letter stated.

“The staff are to come along with all the payment approvals, vouchers, returns and schedule of payments from May 29, 2019 to 14th January, 2020”, the letter stated.

The source said Ihedioha, who had been abroad, is now back in the country and will honour the EFCC invitation.

This was contained in  a Press statement issued by Abiaziem Leaders of Thought,  and signed by Mr Chima Awah.

The  Statement said: “The Abiaziem Town Development Union, on behalf of the good people of Abiaziem, raises an urgent alarm over the deliberate and reckless attempts to plunge our peaceful community into chaos.

Let the world know:

The  Statement continued: “Abiaziem Town is NOT part of Awa. We are a distinct and independent community, temporarily sharing one Autonomous Community status  nothing more.

Abiaziem’s dealings with Atan Oil Company will NEVER be decided at the palace of an Eze in Awa. This is an outright violation of long-established oil industry engagement protocols.”

“Atan Oil Company may visit the Eze in Awa purely for courtesy, but all matters affecting Abiaziem must be discussed in Abiaziem  with our President General, Youth Leaders, and Women’s Wing, just as is done in Awa for their own affairs.

We are not an appendage of Awa. We are a full fledged town with our own government, leadership, and voice.”

The Statement concluded: “We trust that the Oguta LGA Chairman, the Government of Imo State, and our security agencies will act with urgency to protect our people, safeguard peace, and prevent lawlessness from taking root.

If this crisis is allowed to fester, the consequences will be squarely on those who ignored this warning.

This is our cry to the world.

This is our call for justice.

Let peace prevail in Abiaziem and let those fueling chaos be exposed and stopped.”

NBA pledges free legal support for Comfort Emmanson, demands reversal of lifetime flight ban

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has condemned the treatment of Ms. Comfort Emmanson over an incident aboard an Ibom Air flight, describing it as a violation of her right to dignity.

The NBA in the same vein pledged to provide Emmanson with pro bono legal support to seek redress, insisting that “respect for human dignity and the rule of law must never be compromised”.

In a statement signed by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, and General Secretary, Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, the NBA criticised Ibom Air and the Airline Operators of Nigeria, AON, for imposing a lifetime ban on Emmanson without a fair hearing.

According to the NBA, Emmanson was “forcibly removed from the aircraft, stripped of her clothing in public, and humiliated” with the incident filmed and shared online.

The association maintained that the conduct was degrading, unlawful, and “a grave affront to the rule of law and human dignity”.

The NBA also referred to video footage allegedly showing an Ibom Air hostess preventing Emmanson from leaving the aircraft, which it said could amount to false imprisonment and may have escalated the situation.

It called for an independent investigation by relevant authorities before any disciplinary action is taken.

On the lifetime ban, the NBA argued that only the statutory aviation regulator has the authority to suspend or restrict a passenger’s right to fly, not private associations or individual operators.

The association further condemned the circulation of unedited footage exposing Emmanson’s nudity, describing it as a criminal invasion of privacy.

It urged that those responsible for recording and distributing the video be identified and prosecuted.

The NBA demanded that Ibom Air withdraw the lifetime ban, issue a public apology, and cooperate with an impartial investigation.

It also called on the Minister of Aviation, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and security agencies to conduct a thorough inquiry and sanction those found culpable.

Tender apology or face legal action, Obasanjo Library tells EFCC over night raid

The management of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, (OOPL), has condemned what it described as an invasion of its premises by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), around 2 a.m. on Sunday.

According to the library, the late-night operation disrupted a private gathering within the complex, leaving several attendees injured as they scrambled for safety.

Armed operatives, reportedly led by one Olapade, were alleged to have fired sporadically and threatened to kill those present.

In a statement made available to journalists by its Managing Director, Vitalis Ortese, the OOPL management described the raid, which the EFCC claimed was a sting operation as a blatant violation of fundamental human rights and an affront to the library’s rights as a corporate entity.

It faulted the anti-graft agency’s approach, stating that police officers were already on duty at the event and additional personnel had been deployed from Kemta Police Station, Abeokuta, none of whom had prior knowledge of the EFCC operation.

The management demanded an explanation for the raid and a public apology to those whose rights were trampled upon and who sustained injuries during the incident, warning that it would take legal action if the EFCC failed to comply.

“In the meantime, management demands an explanation of these impudent actions from the Commission and an apology from the EFCC authorities for the infringement of its rights, to all those who gathered, and those who sustained serious injuries from the gangster like induced chaos. Failure for which the management will be compelled to seek redress and sanctions as appropriate,” the management threatened.

The management said it had begun its own investigation into the incident and would escalate the matter to relevant authorities, including the EFCC, Police, and the Department of State Security (DSS).

“The invasion, led by one ‘Olapade’, caused serious panic and chaos, leading to serious injuries among participants trying to escape the shooting and the carnage that resulted, and causing terror among residents on the site.

“On inquiry by phone ‘Olapade’ informed the Managing Director of the OOPL establishment, Mr. Vitalis Ortese, that they were acting on an intelligence about a private event in the amusement facility of the complex.

“They also informed management that the police have been duly informed of the operation.

“It should be noted that the event was a private event that had been widely advertised to members of the public for days prior.

“It should also be noted that both the police officers stationed at the OOPL gates and the additional police sent from the Kemta Police Station, as requested by the organisers of the event and management, stated that they were not informed of any planned operation by the EFCC, and neither did they present any warrant.

“And when the armed men were accosted by OOPL security and assisting police officers, they simply retorted, ‘We are doing our job’.”

Meanwhile, on its official X handle, the EFCC on Sunday confirmed conducting a raid in Abeokuta, during which operatives from its Lagos Zonal Office arrested 93 suspected internet fraudsters.
