UN, FG reaffirm commitment against humanitarian crisis

The United Nations (UN) and the federal government of Nigeria have reaffirmed their joint commitment to addressing the country’s growing humanitarian crisis through strengthened collaboration and urgent action.

The pledge is contained in a joint communiqué signed yesterday in Abuja by the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mohmed Fall, and Nigeria’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yusuf Sununu.

The statement was released to mark World Humanitarian Day 2025, in tribute to humanitarian workers who risk, and often lose, their lives delivering aid to those in need.

The communiqué highlighted the critical role of partnerships in humanitarian response, emphasising that deeper collaboration was vital in confronting poverty and worsening humanitarian conditions across the country.

“The federal government, the UN system, and humanitarian partners honour the memory of our colleagues, many of them national staff, who lost their lives helping people affected by conflict and disasters,” the statement read.

They jointly called for the global protection of humanitarian workers and civilians, urging full adherence to international humanitarian law.

They also emphasised the need to safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly women and girls, disproportionately impacted by conflict and displacement.

“Attacks on humanitarian workers and, more importantly, the people they seek to assist, must stop,” they said.

According to them, in spite of rising needs, the UN and the federal government lamented that humanitarian assistance is at its lowest point in years.

They cited the collapse of international funding and growing gaps in basic services for vulnerable populations as major concerns.

They stated, “In Nigeria specifically, humanitarian needs are worsening, with food insecurity and malnutrition reaching emergency levels. They warned that crucial lifelines, such as food and nutrition pipelines, have been severely disrupted, endangering millions, especially children under five. Key statistics from the communiqué include an estimated 31 million people face food insecurity in Nigeria. More than 10 million children under five are acutely malnourished.

“Also, 3.5 million children are malnourished, with 2.5 million concentrated in just six states. Approximately 400,000 children suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) are at immediate risk of death without urgent intervention.’’

They stressed the need for a comprehensive reform of the humanitarian system, informed by six decades of experience and lessons from both local and international humanitarian actors.

Adepoju, however, warned perpetrators of crimes to desist from such wicked acts, noting that the law will definitely catch up with them within the shortest time possible and will be made to face the full wrath of the law.

Hoodlums rob, shoot policeman to death in Bayelsa

A policeman, Obot Godwin, was killed at about 6.00am on Tuesday in the Amarata area of Yenagoa when he went to buy some medicine, it has gathered.

Obot was robbed of his phone and was pleading with the thieves to return the phone to him when he was shot in the head, leading to his instant death.

Our correspondent also gathered that following the killing, policemen swooped on the area around OMPADEC Street and environs, breaking into houses, carrying out indiscriminate arrests, and firing into the air.

Apart from the indiscriminate arrest of innocent folks and destruction of houses, it was learnt that residents, including schoolchildren, were tear-gassed.

Residents told our correspondent in separate interviews that Amarata, one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in the Yenagoa area, has been witnessing violent crimes for some time, but the security agencies failed to act until the killing of Obot.

It was further gathered that some residents have fled the area over the police action while traders have locked up their shops and families have shut their doors.

A resident who did not want his name mentioned said: “Windows were smashed during the raid, and the community has been left in fear of further violence.”

Another resident, a tailor, said, “I am tired. Every time, we continue to run. This morning we started running again. They just killed somebody. The area is also known for clashes between rival cult groups.

“Even the chief has been arrested. They have threatened to return in the evening and arrest people. We don’t know what to do.”

Two residents of the area, a broadcaster with Radio Bayelsa in Yenagoa, Priye Julius, told our correspondent that he witnessed the incident.

Julius said, “It’s true. I am still at home,” and on the situation on the ground as of noon, he said, “The place is calm now.”

Another resident said, “Two people were forcefully taken away from my mini estate, a businessman whose wife works in the bank and another young man who works with Bayelsa Park. Houses were broken into by the police, and men and women taken into custody by force.”

There is growing fear that the development can lead to a wider breakdown of law and order in Yenagoa.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Musa Mohammed, confirmed the incident, describing it as a “serious matter.”

“Yes, it is a serious matter. The area is calm. Police teams are on the ground and the investigation is ongoing,” he stated.

The Kogi State Police Command has reportedly arrested a herder, Jato Jaye, for allegedly killing his 11-year-old son, Buhari, in the Agbaja area of Oworo in the Lokoja Local Government Area of the state.

Security expert, Zagazola Makama, disclosed this via X on Tuesday.

According to him, the incident happened on August 19, when the deceased went grazing with his father but never returned home.

He added that Buhari’s mother, Adama, thereafter raised the alarm over her son’s whereabouts, prompting a search party which led to the discovery of his corpse in the bush.

He wrote, “Sources told Zagazola Makama that on August 19, one Zuberu Adamu of Fulani bush camp, Agbaja village, reported to the police that his sister, Adama Adamu, complained she had not seen her son, Buhari Jato, who went for grazing with his father, Jato Alhaji Jaye, since August 17.

“A search party was immediately raised, which led to the discovery of the lifeless body of the boy in the bush. The father was reportedly found at the scene attempting to bury the body in order to conceal his act.”

He further disclosed that operatives from Division B, Lokoja, reportedly moved to the scene, documented the incident, and took the suspect into custody.

The decomposing body was also said to have been released to the family for burial in line with Islamic rites.

During interrogation, Jaye was said to have confessed to killing his son, claiming the boy “offended him” while they were grazing.

He allegedly admitted to using a Fulani stick to flog the child, which led to his death.

“Sources said the case would soon be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lokoja, for further discreet investigation,” he added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, did not pick calls made to his telephone line. A text message sent to him had yet to be replied to as of the time of filing this report.

It had reported days ago that a 47-year-old Chinese national, Luo Mao, was confirmed dead after he suddenly slumped while on duty at a ceramics company in the Ajaokuta area of the state.

Aya disclosed this while responding to an enquiry by our correspondent.

According to him, the incident occurred on Friday.

Assaulted NYSC member: They threatened to kill, rape her if she speaks – Lawyer alleges

Cyrus Onu, counsel to Jennifer Elobor, the female National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member assaulted by local security operatives in Anambra State, has revealed that the attackers threatened to rape and kill her for daring to speak out during the ordeal.

The lawyer stated this on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief yesterday.

“The security agents were banging on the door and Jennifer was trying to open the door, and they just kicked the door, and it almost hit her face.

“Most of them were masked in mufti with guns, so you can imagine how scared the kids [corps members] were.

“They [security agents] didn’t give any identification. They just said, ‘Come down, come down. You’re all thieves! You’re all ‘Yahoo’ people!’

“When they tried to drag them downstairs, Jennifer was insisting that if they must take them anywhere, they should allow them [corps members] to call their LGI [Local Government Inspector] because the corps members did not know who the operatives were,” the lawyer said.

“That was when they started pouncing on her. They made derogatory comments, asking her who gave her the right as a lady to speak to them anyhow. They started beating her.

“She asked them to allow her to change into something appropriate, and they said, ‘That thing you’re trying to cover, we’ll see it today. We’ll beat you up, we’ll rape you, kill you, and dump you, and nobody can say anything,” Onu added.

The lawyer further alleged that the Anambra security operatives threatened to kill Jennifer Elobor’s colleagues who attempted to defend her.

The Anambra State Government, through Governor Soludo’s Special Adviser on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, condemned the attack on the corps member on Tuesday and announced that the perpetrators had been arrested.

Emeakayi added that the operatives had been suspended pending the outcome of their final review.

“They are suspended because when a case has been established against someone, you arrest the person, then hand him over to the police.

“Now, since they were not readily prepared for persecution, which will be carried out by the police, they are now undergoing other disciplinary measures within our system, pending the final evaluation of the matter, whether they are going to court or not going to court as it relates to the victim,” he ..said.

However, the lawyer described the Anambra governor’s aide’s remarks on the incident as unacceptable.

The victims’ lawyer said, “Ken was alleging that the lady was not forthcoming, and that was why they couldn’t go on with the investigation. That’s not true. In fact, when they got to the secretariat, those people were still firing guns in the air to intimidate them.

“It was one of the local inspectors who came from the NYSC that told them to allow them [corps members] to go; that was how they let them go.

“If not for the fact that it [the incident] came to the public. All of those things they are saying are not true. They are not prepared to prosecute; they are not going to prosecute.

“And, of course, that is not the only redress our clients are seeking. There must be consequences for bad behaviour, and they [the perpetrators] will pay damages. My clients are seeking compensatory damages, and they will have to pay.

“We’ve since written a petition to the government of Anambra State demanding that those persons be prosecuted, and we will follow up to also ensure compensatory damages.”

Emeka Obi hails Isiala Mbano lawmaker for empowering youths on skills

A visionary leader and a pragmatic politician, Dr. Emeka Obi, who is the Executive Chairman of Onuimo LGA, Imo State, has hailed Hon. Sam Osuji, who represents Isiala Mbano State Constituency in Imo House of Assembly, for training and empowering 50 youths of the locality on renewable energy: solar energy and CCTV installation and maintenance.

“This empowerment is one of its kind – very rare – you know, renewable energy: solar energy and CCTV installation and maintenance, are very relevant and for Hon. Sam Osuji to sponsor the training of those 50 persons, equip them meaningfully, shows that he loves Isiala Mbano greatly. In fact, he has almost and virtually empowered all the youths of the area.

“The legislator has done marvelously as a lawmaker. The primary responsibility of a lawmaker is to make law, to amend law, to appropriate and to carry out oversight functions. But he went out of his way to do the job of the Executive. He deserves applause”, Obi stressed.

Obi, who has been performing creditably well in line with the 3R vision, championed by Governor Hope Uzodimma, saluted Okigwe Zone political leaders, especially, Senator Patrick Ndubueze, for gracing the ceremony, which he added was a worthwhile.Obi, who expressed joy over the seriousness of the trainees, charged them to always use the opportunity well, in order to better their lots while lightning up the society.

Court orders interim forfeiture of N20m linked to National Steel Council Contract fraud

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the interim forfeiture of N20 million alleged to be proceeds of contract fraud involving the National Steel Council (NSC).

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the order on Tuesday while ruling on an ex parte application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) through its counsel, Ogechi Ujam.

The judge directed the EFCC to publish the forfeiture order in a national daily, giving any interested party 14 days to appear and show cause why the funds should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government. He adjourned the case until September 5 for the EFCC to report compliance.

In its supporting affidavit, the EFCC disclosed that it had received a petition alleging misappropriation of public funds and fraud against the Executive Secretary of the NSC. The petition claimed that the official, in conspiracy with other government officers, diverted and misused the council’s budgetary allocations.

“The petition further alleged that the Executive Secretary of the council unilaterally withdrew and used funds which were budgeted for the operation of the council without getting appropriate approval from the Board of the Council.

“Preliminary investigation into a petition by the National Steel Council revealed that Le-Juene International Nigeria Limited received funds for the execution of a contract awarded to the company by the National Steel Council

“The contract was not executed, and the funds were not utilised for the purpose for which it was meant.

“From the preliminary investigation carried out, it was revealed that the company received funds from the federal government for the award of a contract which was never executed.

“There is a need to ensure that the said funds in the account of the company are restituted to the federal government, considering the speed with which the funds in the accounts have been dissipated over time.”

Tinubu slashes kidney dialysis cost in Federal Hospitals kidney dialysis

President Bola Tinubu has approved a major subsidy on the cost of kidney dialysis in federal hospitals, reducing the price per session from N50,000 to N12,000, a 76% cut.

The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, disclosed the development in a statement on Monday, describing it as a significant relief for Nigerians battling kidney-related diseases.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a landmark subsidy to ease the cost of kidney dialysis for Nigerians. With this intervention, the price of each dialysis session has been reduced from N50,000 to just 12,000,” Bwala announced.

He explained that the new pricing has already taken effect in ten major federal medical centres and teaching hospitals across the country, with plans to expand nationwide before the end of the year.

The hospitals implementing the new pricing include:

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, Lagos

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja

University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri

University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta

Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos

Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare

University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin

University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar

Bwala added: “More federal medical centres and teaching hospitals will be added before the end of the year to widen access nationwide.”

He “recalled that last year, President Tinubu also approved free cesarean sections (C-sections) for pregnant women in federal hospitals, a bold step aimed at boosting maternal healthcare and reducing preventable maternal deaths.”

Alleged fraud: Court freezes ex-NNPCL boss Mele Kyari’s N661m in four bank accounts

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered a temporary freezing of four Jaiz Bank accounts linked to the former Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kolo Kyari, over allegations bordering on fraud.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order yesterday while ruling on an ex parte motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1641 brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which was argued by its lawyer, Ogechi Ujam.

Although the EFCC had urged the court to freeze the account for 60 days to enable it to conclude the ongoing investigation, Justice Nwite limited the tenure of the order to 30, which he said could be renewed if necessary.

Ujam had told the court that the temporary freezing order was necessary because the accounts were currently being investigated in a case involving the offences of conspiracy, abuse of office and money laundering pending the conclusion of the investigation.

She identified the accounts as Jaiz Bank account number: 0017922724 with account name: Mele Kyari; Jaiz Bank account number: 0017922724 with account name: Mele Kyari; Jaiz Bank account number: 0018575055 with account name: Guwori Community Dev. and Jaiz Bank account number: 0018575141 with account name: Guwori Community Development Foundation Flood Relief.

Ruling, Justice Nwite said, “I have listened to counsel to the applicant and gone through the affidavit evidence with the exhibits and written address attached.

“I find that this application is meritorious and it is hereby granted as prayed,” he said.

The judge then adjourned till September 23 for the EFCC to report on further developments.

The EFCC predicated its motion on three grounds, to the effect that the bank accounts are subject matters of ongoing investigation by the commission in relation to misappropriation of funds and criminal breach of trust.

It stated that the preliminary investigation conducted thus far revealed that the bank accounts are linked to the suspect, who took advantage of the complainant to be a contract facilitator and launder proceeds of unlawful activities.

The EFCC added that there is a need to preserve the funds in the identified bank accounts pending the conclusion of the investigation and possible prosecution,” it added

It stated, in a supporting affidavit, that officials of its Special Investigations (SIS) unit received a petition dated April 24 and filed by a group, the Guardian of Democracy and Rule of Law, against Kyari.

It said investigation so far revealed, among others, “that N661,464,601.50, which are suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities, warehoused in four different accounts.

“These funds were traced to the suspect Mele Kolo Kyari, who is the former Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

“The suspect opened various accounts in Jaiz Bank, which have been used to receive suspicious inflows from NNPC and various oil companies that have dealings with NNPC.

“Bank records revealed that these accounts are controlled and managed by Mr Kyari through his family members who are acting as fronts.

“Further investigation revealed that the said transactions in the various accounts were disguised as payments for a purported book launch and activities of a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

“The commission (EFCC) has written to Jaiz Bank, where the four accounts referred to are domiciled, for the hard copies of the comprehensive account details.

“While responses of the banks are being awaited, the commission has written to post a no debit instruction on the accounts, which will only last for 72 hours.

“An order of this honourable court is necessary to freeze the said accounts clearly described in schedule 1 to the Motion paper for while investigation is ongoing.

“It is in the interest of justice to grant this application,” it said.

Keep praying for Nigeria – Babangida tells Nigerians

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has said that the prayers of both Christians and Muslims have been instrumental in keeping Nigeria together, urging adherents of the two faiths not to relent in praying for the country.

Babangida made the remark yesterday when the Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), led by its Chairman, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, paid him a visit at his Uphill Mansion in Minna to celebrate his 84th birthday.

“I really appreciate CAN for the prayers. I must tell you that the prayers of both faiths, Christians and Muslims, have been very effective, and it is what is keeping the country. I urge you to maintain the relationship in the general interest of the country and the people,” he said.

The elder statesman also called for sustained cordiality and tolerance between the two religions, stressing that unity and peaceful coexistence are essential for the nation’s development.

Earlier, Rev. Joshua Markus, Vice Chairman of CAN Niger State, who represented the Chairman, commended Babangida for his remarkable vision and contributions to Nigeria, which, he said, continue to inspire many.

He prayed for God’s continued blessings, good health, and fulfilment for the former leader, noting that both the state and the nation deeply appreciate his enduring legacy.

2027: ‘Drop Shettima, pick a Christian’ – Northern ethnic nationalities tell Tinubu

Tinubu

The Northern Ethnic Nationality Forum NENF has called on President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress APC to discard any plans of presenting a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections.

The forum, which represents over 200 ethnic communities in Northern Nigeria, said its position against APC’s single-faith ticket has been endorsed by 127 ethnic associations.

It warned that such a move could deepen Nigeria’s religious divisions and undermine national unity, urging the president to drop Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate and instead pick a Christian ahead of the polls.

In a statement signed by its President, Dr Dominic Alancha, the group argued that the 2023 Muslim-Muslim ticket had already strained interfaith relations and alienated large sections of the country’s Christian population.

According to the forum, the outcome of the last general election revealed significant electoral vulnerabilities for the APC, particularly in Christian-dominated states.

It noted that the ruling party lost in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory, largely due to resentment over religious imbalance.

“Over 80 percent of Northern Christians rejected the APC in 2023. Retaining the same strategy in 2027 could cost the party more states across the Middle Belt and parts of the North where Christians hold significant voting power,” the group warned.

The forum also pointed out that even within APC ranks, several Christian stakeholders had expressed discontent with the ticket, while some defected to opposition parties.

It added that a repeat of the same strategy could strengthen opposition alliances, especially if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party candidate Peter Obi form a coalition.

NENF proposed that the APC should instead nominate a Northern Christian as Vice President in the next election, stressing that inclusivity was critical for healing national wounds and ensuring electoral success.

“Vice President Kashim Shettima may be competent, but his presence cannot erase the perception of exclusion. A Northern Christian from Plateau, Bauchi or Taraba would help the APC broaden its appeal without sacrificing merit,” the statement read.

The forum appealed to President Tinubu to publicly renounce the Muslim-Muslim ticket, describing it as a “historic chance to be the healer Nigeria needs.”

“With hunger, insecurity and sectarian violence threatening our survival, Nigeria requires leadership that reflects our diversity rather than deepens our divides,” the statement added.

The Northern Ethnic Nationality Forum, which represents over 200 ethnic communities in Northern Nigeria, vowed to mobilize its 20-million-strong membership to push for inclusive governance as the country prepares for the 2027 polls.

FCTA confiscates over 700 unauthorised tinted vehicles

By Sunday Abah, Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has impounded over 700 vehicles with tinted glasses without permits, fake number plates and other traffic violations.

The FCTA Director, Department of Security Service, AdamuGwary, disclosed this during a ‘Stop and Search’ operation, at the Apo – Wassa junction and Karu axis of Abuja.

Gwary, who was represented by the Secretary, Command and Control Centre, Dr Peter Olumuji, noted that the measure was geared towards curbing incidences of ‘one- chance’ in the FCT.

According to him, the exercise is part of the second phase of ‘Operation Sweep Abuja Clean’, a multi-agency crime prevention initiative, and the operation has drastically reduced incidences of one chance to the barest minimum.

“Our stop-and-search exercise has made it clear to criminals that no matter where they are in the FCT, the team will always reach them,” he said.

He assured residents of the FCT that the operation was yielding results, citing several stolen vehicles recovered within the last week alone.

He therefore appealed to residents to bear with the temporary inconveniences caused by the stop-and-search operations, stressing  that the measure was aimed at safeguarding lives and properties.

Also speaking, Mrs Deborah Osho, Head of Operations, Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) reiterated the administration’s  commitment to rid the city of unregistered and unpainted taxis, commonly used by criminals.

Osho disclosed that several vehicles were impounded during the joint task force operation, for various offences such as, driving against traffic, lack of registration and use of number plates not assigned to the vehicles.

“This is a joint taskforce team, a joint collaboration with all agencies and especially the lead agency, which is the police.

“We work together, and because of their presence we apprehend a lot of vehicles, especially those driving against traffic. It is a common thing in Abuja and we are trying to stop them,” she said.

According to her, most of the one-chance perpetrators use vehicle number plates that cannot be traced.

She explained that once there was suspicion about such vehicles, they would be picked.

“Most of the one-chance vehicles either have fake number plates not traceable to the actual vehicles, or operate as unpainted taxis, making it difficult to identify them.

“Today in Karu, you can see the huge number of vehicles apprehended. This is sending a clear message that Abuja is difficult for criminals,” Osho said.

She assured residents that activities of the  ‘Operation Sweep Abuja Clean’ would continue across the city and suburbs, until sanity was restored on Abuja roads.

FG urged to provide tax incentives for Nigerian media

Former Chief Corporate Communications Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), Mr. Femi Soneye yesterday called on the Federal Government to support the Nigerian media with targeted incentives, including tax reliefs and import duty waivers on essential media tools.

Mr. Soneye gave the charge in Abuja after receiving the NUJ FCT Excellence in Corporate Communications Award, conferred on him by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council.

In his remarks, Mr Soneye noted that while the Nigerian media remains one of the most vibrant in Africa, it continues to grapple with systemic challenges that weaken its effectiveness.

“The Nigerian media remains one of the most vibrant in Africa, but it also faces systemic challenges, financial, political, legal, and technological that weaken its effectiveness.

“The government can play a supportive role by granting tax incentives or relief on import duties for newsprint, broadcast equipment, and digital infrastructure,” he said.

He also urged Federal Government to establish an independent media development fund to support investigative journalism, community radio, and newsroom innovation, drawing parallels with models in South Africa, the United States, and Canada.

The award underscores Soneye’s long-standing contributions to journalism and corporate communications, as well as his advocacy for a stronger, independent, and sustainable Nigerian media.

She noted that the Council recognized Mr. Sonoye’s role in promoting balanced reporting, welfare packages for members.

Chieftaincy title: Why Ooni of Ife won’t react to Alaafin’s 48-hour threat — Palace aide

Moses Olafare, the Spokesperson for Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, has explained the reasons why the monarch will not react to the 48-hour threat by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, to reverse the title conferred on a popular Ibadan-based business mogul, Dotun Sanusi.

Olafare, in a Facebook post yesterday, disclosed that Oba Ogunwusi had particularly directed him to ignore the revered Oyo monarch.

According to him, the Ooni will not dignify what he described as “undignifyable” with an official response, stressing that he had left the matter to be handled in the public court of opinion.

He wrote, “My principal has directed me against issuing a press release on the empty threat. I beg to disappoint you, gentlemen of the press.

“We cannot dignify the undignifyable with an official response. We leave the matter to be handled in the public court of opinion, as it is already being treated.

“Let’s rather focus on narratives that unite us rather than the ones capable of dividing us. No press release, please. 48 hours my foot!”

It was reported that Oba Owoade described the Ooni’s action as an “affront” after he issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the revocation of the chieftaincy title.

He also claimed it was a direct challenge to his authority.

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has given the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, a 48-hour ultimatum to revoke the Okanlomo of Yorubaland chieftaincy title recently conferred on Ibadan business tycoon, Engineer Dotun Sanusi.

In a statement on Monday signed by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin described the Ooni’s action as an “affront.”

He also claimed it was a direct challenge to his authority.

The Alaafin reiterated that he holds the exclusive right to bestow titles that cover the entire Yorubaland.

“The conferment of a Yoruba-wide chieftaincy title by the Ooni is not only ultra vires but an insult to the Titan of Yorubaland.

“The Supreme Court itself has ruled that only the Alaafin has such authority. Yet, the Ooni continues to act above the law, trampling on both tradition and the courts.”

The Alaafin warned that if the Ooni fails to withdraw the title within 48 hours, “consequences will follow.”

It would be recalled that a similar occurrence happened in 1991when the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, wrote to the military governor of Oyo State, Colonel Abdulkareem Adisa, to inform him about an aberration by the late Ooni, Oba Okunade Sijuade, of conferring an imaginary chieftaincy title of Akinrogun of Yorubaland on the National Chairman of the National Republican Convention, Chief Tom Ikimi.

Oba Adeyemi described Oba Sijuade’s action as an outright desecration of the sacred institution, especially when such abuses come from quarters that are expected to protect and embellish such institutions.

Nigeria spends $10bn annually on food imports, minister laments

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, says Nigeria spends $10 billion annually on agro-imports, including wheat and fish.

Kyari disclosed this yesterday in Lagos at the First Bank of Nigeria Ltd. 2025 Agric and Export Expo.

The minister, represented by his Special Adviser, Mr. Ibrahim Alkali, decried the rising rate of food imports and stressed the need for increased financing in agriculture to boost local production and exports.

“Nigeria spends over $10 billion annually importing food such as wheat, rice, sugar, fish, and even tomato paste.

“Agriculture already contributes 35 per cent of our Gross Domestic Product and employs 35 per cent of our workforce.

“We sit on 85 million hectares of arable land with a youth population of over 70 per cent under the age of 30. Yet Nigeria accounts for less than 0.5 per cent of global agro-exports.

“Currently, the nation earns less than $400 million from agro exports. To build a non-oil export economy, we must rethink how we finance agriculture,” he said.

Kyari reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to achieving food sovereignty, insisting on the urgent need to scale up agricultural financing.

“President Tinubu has made it clear that food sovereignty is the goal. Nigeria must not only feed itself but do so on its own terms, free from excessive dependency on imports.

“Sovereignty means ensuring that no Nigerian goes hungry because of shocks in global food supply chains. It means empowering every community to stand on the strength of our land, our people, and our productivity.

“Boosting domestic production and supporting exports are not separate agendas — they are two sides of the same coin.

“We have the land, the labour, and the markets. What we lack is the system of financing, value addition, and infrastructure that can turn potential into prosperity.

“The fundamentals compel us to pivot from dependence on oil rigs to resilience in food and export earnings; from raw commodity exports to value-added agribusiness; from fragmented farmer credit to structured financial systems that attract significant capital; and from stereotypes to active youth participation in agriculture,” Kyari said.

He further emphasised the need for innovative mechanisms and critical thinking to strengthen food security.

“Nigeria can do better if we begin to think critically and improve mechanisms such as revenue sharing, agricultural financing with performance triggers, factoring forward contracts, Pay-as-Harvest schemes, and more.

“These are not abstract theories. They are proven models working successfully in real economies,” he added.

“The process is such that the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) will now harvest vulnerable Nigerians based on their lowest cadre in the national social register,” the minister said.

“For those Nigerians, it is a rapid conditional cash transfer. So far, we have disbursed N419 billion to five million Nigerians.

“We have distributed 71 percent in the northern part and 21 percent in the southern part of the country,” the minister said.

Family members said the elder Aiyepeku’s death on Tuesday, August 12, was directly linked to the shock and trauma of Ayobami’s brutal murder on July 22 in Lokoja.

“He never recovered from the pain,” Ayobami’s elder brother, Timothy Aiyepeku, told our correspondent. “On August 6, after making arrangements for Ayobami’s burial, I returned home to find my father had collapsed. He was hospitalised, but his condition worsened until he passed.”

Timothy expressed concern over unanswered questions surrounding Ayobami’s killing, noting that both his phone and that of the alleged killer remain missing.

“We suspect a conspiracy,” he said. “We want the police to leave no stone unturned. We believe justice can be achieved if the right resources are committed to the investigation.”

Despite their grief, the family said it is clinging to faith, trusting God for ultimate justice.

Kogi Police Command spokesperson, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, had earlier identified Oluwapelumi Adebayo, a colleague of Ayobami, as the prime suspect.

According to police, Adebayo murdered Ayobami inside an office at GRA, Lokoja, on July 22. A day later, before he could be apprehended, the suspect allegedly took his own life in a hotel room in Lokoja.

In just three weeks, the Aiyepeku family has been forced to prepare for two burials: a promising young journalist and his grieving father.

Timothy said the family remains hopeful that truth and justice will eventually emerge.

“We believe law enforcement is working, and we wait for their updates. But beyond that, we trust God to avenge this cruel injustice,” he said.

Labour Party: Abure’s tenure has expired — Court, INEC

  • it’s a welcome development – Nenadi Usman-led faction

The Labour Party’s leadership crisis has taken decisive turn after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Julius Abure’s case against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), affirming that he is no longer the party’s National Chairman.

In suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1523/2025, the Court struck out Abure’s suit for want of jurisdiction, echoing the Supreme Court’s April 4, 2025, ruling that nullified all prior recognitions of his leadership.

INEC It was gathered, confirmed that Abure’s tenure, along with that of the National Executive Committee, expired in June 2024, as contained in the commission’s counter-affidavit in the case.

Reacting to the judgment, Interim National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman, PhD, said the decision “removes every lingering doubt” about Abure’s tenure status.

“This is another unambiguous affirmation of the rule of law and the Supreme Court’s binding pronouncements.

“The chapter is closed — we must put distractions behind us and rebuild the Labour Party into the disciplined, people-centred movement Nigerians deserve,” she said.

Usman praised INEC’s “clarity, courage, and institutional integrity” in stating the facts plainly and urged all LP members to “respect the supremacy of the Constitution and the authority of the courts.”

The ruling may finally end the factional battle that has dogged the party for over a year, especially with by-elections looming and the 2027 general elections in view

Doctors find large knife lodged in man’s chest for eight years

A man in Tanzania who came to the hospital complaining of pain and pus discharge from his right nipple was shocked to learn that he had been living with a large knife lodged in his chest for eight years, the country’s media reported.

Doctors at the Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania recently published a most unusual case study in the journal, National Library of Medicine.

They wrote about a 44-year-old generally healthy man who came to the hospital with a 10-day-long history of white pus discharge from his right nipple.

He denied having any chest pain, difficulty breathing, cough, or fever, but when asked if he had anything notable to tell doctors, he recalled a violent fight eight years ago, during which he sustained several cuts to his face, back, chest, and abdomen.

Doctors had managed to suture the wounds back then, and he had lived a mostly uneventful life ever since, up until his nipple started oozing pus.

Unable to determine the cause of the infection, doctors ordered an X-ray and were shocked to see a large knife lodged in the man’s chest.

Refinery fraud: EFCC recovers billions as ex-NNPCL officials face prosecution

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has recovered over N5bn and $10m from contractors and government officials indicted in the fraud in the turnaround maintenance of the nation’s refineries in Port Harcourt, Kaduna and Warri.

It was reliably gathered that the anti-graft agency was working to recover another N10bn and $13m allegedly siphoned through contractors engaged in the maintenance.

Our correspondent learnt that the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, took personal charge of the investigation owing to his displeasure with the non-functional refineries in spite of humongous public spendings on them.

The reports said that Nigeria’s four refineries have been largely dormant for decades despite several attempts at rehabilitation.

Successive administrations have budgeted billions of dollars for their turnaround maintenance, but the facilities in Warri, Kaduna, and Port Harcourt have continued to underperform, forcing the country to rely heavily on imported petroleum products.

The EFCC is said to be probing the sum of $1,559,239,084.36 allocated to the Port Harcourt refinery, $740,669,600 released for the Kaduna refinery, and $656,963,938 approved for the Warri refinery.

Top sources at the anti-graft agency revealed that fraudulent practices, including over-invoicing, contract inflation, and questionable payments, were largely responsible for the inability of the refineries to function despite huge public spending over the years.

They disclosed that former management teams of the three refineries were repeatedly interrogated in connection with the discoveries.

One of the sources said the commission had concluded investigations into some officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited allegedly involved in the rehabilitation contracts and was preparing charges against them.

The source said, “Our investigation into the turnaround maintenance of the nation’s refineries in Warri, Kaduna and Port Harcourt, have yielded major discoveries of large- scale fraud.“Investigators discovered fraudulent dealings through over-invoicing, contract inflation and questionable payments were largely responsible for the malfunctioning of the refineries. “Specifically, investigations flagged former management teams of the three refineries who were arrested several times and grilled to uncover fraudulent dealings that have not made the refineries deliver optimal benefits to Nigerians. “A total sum of $10m and N5bn have so far been recovered from suspects indicted in the fraud. The recoveries were made from some contractors and government officials involved in over-invoicing and inflated payments.”

Man in police net for faking own kidnap to extort money from family

… After his father refused  to give him N500,000 to settle debt

…Requests that ransom he paid into his own account

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old man, Bello Azeez, for allegedly staging his own kidnap in order to extort money from his family and acquaintances.

The Command’s spokesperson, Olushola Ayanlade,  a Superintendent of Police (SP) confirmed the arrest in a statement in Akure.

He said Azeez, who hails from Ipele in Owo local government area, plotted the fake abduction, after his father refused to give him N500,000 to settle a debt.

According to Ayanlade, suspicion arose when the family noticed that the supposed victim was demanding ransom to be paid directly into his own account, a development that made them alert the police.

“Investigators tracked his phone and discovered he never left Owo throughout the period of the alleged kidnap. He was subsequently arrested and confessed to the crime. He will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigation,” the spokesman said.

Ayanlade described the act as an abuse of trust, stressing that greed and deceit could ruin lives.

He urged parents and guardians to guide their children against crime and negative peer influence, while also calling on members of the public to resist all forms of deception and continue supporting the police in efforts to promote peace, security and societal progress.

Edo Govt condemns killing of hippopotamus in community

Police arrest officer, others for robbery in Benin

The Edo Police Command has nabbed a serving police officer and three other accomplices for allegedly terrorising residents of Benin through acts of brutality, extortion, and armed robbery.

The command spokesperson, Moses Yamu, disclosed this in a statement released in Benin yesterday.

He said the arrest followed a viral video in which a victim allegedly accused some policemen of abducting him, seizing his phone and belongings, while subjecting him to harassment.

Acting on the report, he said the state Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, ordered an immediate investigation and arrest of the culprits.

“On 15th August 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team successfully intercepted the suspects with a silver coloured Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items,” he said.

Yamu said that a serving inspector in the police force was arrested alongside three civilian accomplices for allegedly terrorising the residents of the city through acts of extortion and harassment.

Describing the incident as “shameful and criminal,” he quoted the commissioner as saying the suspects would face the full weight of the law.

“The command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, or misconduct within the Force.

“There will be no hiding place for rogue elements within the police.

“Any officer caught engaging in extortion, brutality, or corruption will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted,” the commissioner said.

Yamu urged members of the public, including the victim featured in the viral video, to come forward with credible information to aid investigations and ensure justice is served.

A’Ibom gov warns against lobbying for civil service jobs

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has warned cronies and political associates not to bother calling him for slots in civil service job openings in the state, as they will be disappointed.

Eno gave the warning while speaking at the Monthly Prayer Service at the Latter House Chapel, Government House, Uyo, on Saturday.

He disclosed that the screening for the job would be computer-based to ensure a level playing field for every Akwa Ibom youth who applied, adding that out of the 15,000 who applied, only 3,000 would be offered engagement.

“I am told that about 15,000 Akwa Ibom youths applied for the civil service job. 3000 is what we want to engage. The truth is, it will be a computer-based test. As you finish, the result comes out for you to see whether you passed or not.

“So, don’t bother sending me texts for slots. It is not just possible. For once, we will do this one like that. If you don’t understand computers, you don’t have to bother.

“Let’s give the right people the opportunity to go and do this job. We will take time, engage them to sit on the computer, there will be a test, and as they finish and submit, they will receive an instant result.

“This is so that we can weed out twelve thousand, consider three thousand and begin the oral interview. Please don’t be angry with us; that is the approach we would adopt for this process,” he said.

The Governor urged prospective applicants interested in one job or the other to visit the portal, adding that many have secured different kinds of jobs without knowing anyone.

The governor, who recalled the 2-day intensive project inspection across the State, expressed delight at the pace of work and the large number of youths engaged at the different sites.

“We spent the last two days in a row for inspections, and I want to thank members of the Council, and all of the Delivery Advisors who went around with me physically inspecting the projects in this State. We have about 60 projects, not only roads, but we were able to inspect just 23 key ones.

“So what we have to know is that the State is steadily moving in the right direction, and there is no doubt about it. By the time we come around, maybe next year, to commission those projects, you will know that God is helping us.

“Everywhere I went, my joy was that I saw young people working, and they were happy. It shows that our people are engaged.

“Please help me beg our young people, let’s stop this sense of entitlement. There are projects spread around all the local government areas. We are engaging our young people and providing work for them. I saw young female engineers, and that thrilled me so much. Please go to the portal and apply, and you will be considered.”

“There are things that we must do right; we can’t afford to disappoint those who are expecting so much from us, and we must win this race in Jesus’ name,” he added.

He disclosed that the third phase of the food distribution for the vulnerable will begin on August 20, 2025, and that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs will post dates for the different local government areas.

He called on stakeholders to get involved in the coordination in their respective areas, and urged youths to desist from fomenting trouble during the process, as only vulnerable citizens with food vouchers are expected at the distribution centres.

Earlier in his message on the theme “Run the Race”, taken from Hebrews 12:1-2, Bishop Nkanang, who is the General Overseer of Word Tabernacle, admonished Christians on the need to exercise patience and run the race of life in the right way.

Rice farmers blame price hike on cartel, middlemen

Some members of the rice farmers’ associations have blamed the continuous hike in the price of the product in Nigeria on the activities of unscrupulous farmers and middlemen in the sector.

The rice farmers’ leaders made this known in separate interviews with Our Correspondent in Lagos.

The vice-chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Mr Sakin Agbayewa, said the consistent fluctuations in the price of rice could be linked to human manipulations in spite of the government’s efforts.

“As regards the high price of rice, I think we are taking one step forward and five steps backward.

“Some few months ago, the Federal Government came out with a waiver, giving some companies a small waiver to import rice into the country in order to crush the price. And while that was on, did they mobilise the local farmers? That is where the issue lies.

“Although few farmers were empowered by the Federal Government with a 75 per cent reduction on the cost of production, others were given fertilisers for free.

“Now, the question is this. Those local farmers who were empowered, did they really cultivate anything?

“The main issue is that the rice price hike can be linked to a cartel that wants to frustrate government’s effort,” Agbayewa said.

According to him, while the waiver was on, they actually imported rice into the country, and the price came down, but while they were importing, they were also warehousing.

“Now that the importation waiver is over, the cartel is creating artificial scarcity.

“Also, some of the farmers who cultivate local rice—it’s not that we do not produce enough, but some farmers only capitalise on the shortage in the system.

“And with the shortage, they are now repacking local rice in foreign bags for selfish reasons. They do this to sell at high cost because they know Nigerians have this high taste for foreign things.

“There is a high level of insincerity and dishonesty among our people. Some unscrupulous farmers, middlemen, and even retailers can be blamed for the current hike,” he said.

On his part, the Chairman of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, Mr Raphael Hunsa, called on the government to relate with the real farmers for the price of rice to drop.

“The price of rice will continue to go up if the government fails to support local rice farmers.

“The price will go higher and higher because cultivation of local rice is quite different from importing rice.

“And what we can do to resolve the issue of consistent price hikes in rice is to support the rice farmers in the right way.

“Though government is trying, and we don’t dispute that, but they should let their interventions get to the right hands.

“They should invite local rice farmers to a roundtable for formulation of the right policies and programmes for the sector.

“So, we know our problem, they should ask us and we will tender our problem. It is now left for the government to resolve the problem through the normal channel. And with that, the price of rice will come down,” Hunsa said.

He also urged local rice farmers not to sell off the interventions provided by the government, but should utilise them for the growth of the sector.

“We will also use this opportunity to tell our farmers that any input being given to them should not be sold.

“They should not sell it out. They were given the input for continuity.

“The continuity is what government is after. So let government continue to try their possible best to help farmers and not relent,” the RIFAN boss said.

On his part, a rice dealer at Oja Oba Market in Agege area of the state, Mr Mustafa Aliu, said the price of rice rose few weeks back due to the expiration of the waiver on rice imports.

“The price of rice is currently between N70,000 and N80,000 for a 50 kg bag. We can only sell it the way we bought it.

“There is no foreign rice among my products. I sell only local rice, and it’s clean and healthy,” Aliu said.

Also, another trader, at Iddo area of the state, Mr Temitayo Hakeem, said, “With the high demand for foreign rice, we will continue to witness this rise in the price of rice.

“There are bags of rice that still sell as high as N145,000 or N150,000, depending on the choice of the consumer,” Hakeem said.

The reports said that a 50 kg bag of local rice currently sells between N65,000 and N80,000, depending on the species.

The same quantity sold for between N45,000 and N55,000 two months ago.

FG unveils tax reforms package in South-East zone

The Federal Government has unveiled a tax reform package aimed at simplifying compliance, reducing the burden on small businesses and low-income earners, and strengthening Nigeria’s revenue system.

At a sensitization forum held on yesterday at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, Mrs Chioma Nweze, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, Southeast zone told participants that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to make taxation fairer and more beneficial to ordinary Nigerians.“Our women, especially market women, must understand why government collects tax, what government does with it, and how they should pay without exploitation. “The president has removed fuel subsidy, unified the exchange rate, and increased allocations to states. These reforms will ensure more projects are delivered to benefit citizens,” she said. She emphasized that sensitizing women was deliberate, recalling that historical revolts such as the Aba Women’s Riot of 1929 were caused by unfair taxation.“When women are informed, they carry the message to their families and communities. We don’t want exploitative practices to return; instead, women should be empowered to benefit from government initiatives,” she said.

Presenting his paper, Barrister Chukwumeka Eze, Chairman of the Tax Appeal Tribunal, Southeast Zone, explained that four new tax acts were signed into law on June 26, 2025, and now consolidated more than 20 scattered tax laws.

He noted that businesses with an annual turnover below N50 million are exempted from Companies Income Tax and Value Added Tax, while minimum wage earners will no longer pay personal income tax.“This is progressive taxation. The rich will now pay more within their means, while the poor will be protected. The days when wealthy individuals paid little tax are gone,” Eze stressed.

He added that the reforms also introduced a Tax Dispute Resolution Mechanism that allows citizens to lodge complaints free of charge, with resolutions provided within 7–14 days.

Also speaking, a tax professional and Chartered Accountant, Mr. Innocent Chinyere Ohagwa, said the reforms were necessary to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal base, describing SMEs as the “lifeblood” of the economy.

“SMEs account for more than 90 percent of businesses and nearly 60% of jobs in Nigeria. By removing multiple taxation and unfair levies, government is giving them space to grow, create wealth, and support economic diversification,” he said.

Dr. Zino Ugboma, representing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), highlighted how tax revenues were being used to expand access to education.

He explained that undergraduates in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education can now access tuition and living-cost loans, repayable only after gaining employment, two years post-NYSC.

“This is a direct way of showing that taxation is not just about collection, but also about giving back to the people,” Ugboma said.

The forum, which drew officials of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), women leaders, professionals, and community stakeholders, ended with a call for stronger collaboration to ensure the success of the reforms.

Participants, including Mrs. Nnenna Otuonye, commended President Tinubu for pushing a fairer system and urged Southeast residents to embrace compliance for economic growth.
