Group raises alarm over activities of gunmen in Anambra community

A group, Concerned Ufuma Professionals, (CUP), has raised an alarm over the activities of gunmen masquerading as separatists in Umuogem Village, Ufuma community of Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

A member of the group, Mr. Chukwuemeka Okeke who took time to chronicle the activities of gunmen in the area said the entire village has been overtaken by gun-welding men, who dictate what happens.

In a long piece he wrote to reveal the activities of the men, and posted by social media influencer, Dr Uche Nworah, he said: “Umuogem and Umueji, two villages in Ufuma town of Orumba North, Anambra State, are under siege by criminals who have taken over their forests and roads with some surprising boldness that can baffle any sane society.

“These criminals dictate who goes to the farms or who doesn’t go. They place levies to be paid before any celebrations could be held. They take phones, remove sim cards, order when you open shops and when you close them.

“Whether by day or by night, they parade around the two villages with their guns hanging dangerously on their shoulders while the villagers cower in fear. They have seized the community’s palm plantations and assigned their agents to harvest, sell, and return money to them, to the great pains of the poor villagers.”

Speaking about extortion by the gunmen, Okeke said: “Recently, in broad daylight, they snatched a new motorcycle from a young man, who serves as a gate man to one of the compounds in the village. One of them is said to have even visited a family and proposed marriage to one of their daughters.

“On Friday, 8th August, two men, (Mr Ikechukwu Ibe and Mr Chimezie Ifesineke) had a quarrel. One of them (Mr. Ikechukwu ) went and invited these criminals to help him deal with Mr Chimezie. As they couldn’t meet Mr Chimezie, they left a message that if he fails to pay one hundred thousand (N100,000) naira within a few days, they would come back to kill all his children and burn his house.

“The said amount was to cover the cost of bullets they wasted in his house and to cover for the cost of treating Mr Ikechukwu. Mr. Chimezie has been seeking help to raise the amount.

“Last week too, they forced people who came to perform a traditional marriage to transfer the sum of forty thousand N40,000 before the groom’s people could be allowed to enter the compound of their bride. They mount road blocks along the Umuogem – Ogbunka road.

Every Monday, they shoot indiscriminately to scare the villagers; insisting the villagers must observe a compulsory sit-at home order.”

The group begged for the intervention of the state governor, Prof ChukwumaSoludo, to address insecurity in the area.

“People of Umuogem and Umueji villages in Ufuma, Orumba North LGA cry to Anambra State government for help as their community is under siege by criminal elements. Government and security agencies should please come to our aid,” he begged.

Some members of the community who spoke to newsmen confirmed that the gunmen are daily gaining confidence in the area.

However, when our reporter reached out to the spokesperson for Anambra State police command, SP TochukwuIkenga to confirm this report, he insisted that no such case exists there.

Sowore, others protest at NYSC headquarters, demand release of corps member’s certificate

Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, yesterday led a protest to the headquarters of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Abuja, demanding the immediate release of the discharge certificate of Ms. Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a corps member whose service year was allegedly extended unjustly.
The protest following allegations of political victimisation and abuse of office by NYSC officials, has triggered outrage among human rights advocates and legal practitioners.
Sowore, while speaking to the crowd, insisted that the corps member had fulfilled her national service and deserved her discharge certificate without delay.
The former presidential candidate accused the NYSC of being used as a tool for political retribution and called for accountability within the institution.
During the protest, lawyers from Inibehe Effiong Chambers submitted a formal protest letter to the NYSC Director-General, detailing the alleged victimisation of Ms Ugumaye, who served with State Code Number LA/24B/8325.
The letter, dated August 11, 2025, accused a local government inspector, Ms Veronica Abela, of deliberately refusing to process Ms Ugumaye’s biometric clearance in April 2025, allegedly in retaliation for her criticism of the Tinubu-led administration’s policies.
“Our client duly presented herself for the said April 2025 biometric monthly clearance on the 7th day of April, 2025. However, her local government inspector, Ms Veronica Abela, in an act of deliberate and targeted victimisation, refused to screen her,” the letter stated.
According to the lawyers, Ms Ugumaye’s file was seized without cause, adding that she was denied a fair hearing before her service year was extended.
“This extension of our client’s service year amounts to denial of her right to a fair hearing as enshrined in Section 36 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended),” the letter read.
The petition also highlighted alleged threats made by the Lagos State Coordinator of the NYSC, who reportedly warned Ms Ugumaye that she would face an extension of her service year after she criticised government policies.
“The NYSC is established by statute as a neutral, non-partisan institution, and not as an apparatus for political retribution,” the letter emphasised.
Inibehe Effiong, Principal Counsel at Inibehe Effiong Chambers, warned that failure to address the matter would lead to further action.
“Take notice that failure to comply with our demands will leave our client with no option but to immediately lodge a formal appeal with the Presidency and seek redress in court,” the letter stated.
The NYSC Director-General was, however, unavailable to receive the protesters, as he was reportedly away on an assignment.

EFCC arrests Tambuwal over alleged N189bn fraud

Aminu Tambuwal, former governor of Sokoto State, is currently being quizzed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in Abuja.

The Cable reports that Tambuwal, a former governor and currently a serving senator, is in detention over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals to the tune of N189 billion.

The development comes after the African Democratic Congress, ADC, alleged that EFCC was carrying out selective investigations targeting opposition politicians.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party claimed that recent EFCC summons to senior members of the opposition coalition were politically motivated and linked to their political affiliations.

According to ADC, some of the cases being pursued are not based on new evidence but involve reopening files from past years.

SERAP, NGE, sue Niger State governor, NBC, over Badeggi FM

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) have filed a lawsuit against Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over  intimidation of Minna-based radio station, Badeggi FM, and the threat to shut and crack down on the station using law enforcement.

This was  contained in  Press statement jointly signed by  the Deputy Director of SERAP, Lagos,  Kolawole Oluwadare and the  General Secretary , Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Onuoha Ukeh.

Governor Bago recently directed security operatives to seal Badeggi FM,  with threat to revoked its license, demolish the station’s premises, and profiling the station’s owner, Shuiabu Badeggi.

In the suit filed on Friday, with number FHC/L/CS/1587/2025, at the Federal High Court, Lagos, SERAP and NGE are asking the court to determine “whether, by section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended) and section 2(1) (t) of the NBC Act, the NBC has the duty to protect Badeggi FM from the ongoing intimidation from the governor.

SERAP and NGE are asking the court for “a declaration that by the combined provisions of section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution and section 2(1)(t) of the NBC Act, the NBC has the legal duty to protect Badeggi FM and other broadcasting outlets in Nigeria from any intimidation and undue interference.”

SERAP and NGE are seeking “an order of perpetual injunction restraining Niger State governor and NBC from harassing, intimidating and/or threatening to shutdown Badeggi FM and revoke the licence of station.”

In the suit, SERAP and NGE are arguing that: “the failure and or neglect of the NBC to protect and defend the independence of Badeggi FM radio against arbitrary executive interference constitutes a breach of its statutory duty to ensure fair, independent, and lawful broadcasting practices in Nigeria.”

SERAP and NGE are also arguing that, “the ongoing intimidation, and threat by Governor Bago to strip Badeggi FM station of its operational licence, further threat to demolish the station’s premises and to profile the station’s owner is unlawful and a violation of the rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and media freedom.”

According to SERAP and NGE, “the allegations of inciting violence against Badeggi FM and its owner are vague, unfounded and unsubstantiated.

The suit filed on behalf of SERAP and NGE by their lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare, Oluwakemi Agunbiade, and Andrew Nwankwo, read in part: “The media plays an essential role as a vehicle or instrument for the exercise of freedom of expression and information – in its individual and collective aspects – in a democratic society.”

“Intimidating, harassing and silencing critical or dissenting voices under the guise of vague and unsubstantiated national security concerns is a fundamental breach of your constitutional oath of office and Nigeria’s international human rights obligations.

“Intimidating, harassing and silencing Badeggi FM and its owner would have a chilling effect on the protection of freedom of expression and media freedom across several states.

“The ongoing intimidation and threat to arbitrarily revoke the station’s licence, unlawfully demolish its premises and profile its owner are all clearly antithetical to the requirements of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] and the country’s international human rights obligations.

“The ongoing intimidation and harassment of Badeggi FM and its owner is capable of discouraging participation of the press in debates over matters of legitimate public concern ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The ongoing intimidation and harassment of Badeggi FM, its owner and other staff members of the station constitute a serious restriction on the development of democracy in the country, since it impedes free debate over ideas and opinions.

“Media outlets in Niger State should be free to enable debate on issues of public interest without fear of reprisals.

“Both Governor ago and the NBC have the duty to respect and uphold the constitutional and statutory obligations to ensure that journalists and media houses that regularly impart information on matters of public interest including Badeggi FM enjoy an environment to perform that function.

“There is significant public interest in the capacity of the press, including Badeggi FM to obtain and impart the information that it needs to function properly and perform its vital public watchdog role.

“Any restrictions on freedom of expression and media freedom must be provided by law, imposed to protect legitimate aims, and necessary to protect those aims.

“While the Nigerian Constitution and human rights treaties recognize national security and public order as legitimate aims for restricting freedom of expression, the UN Human Rights Council has stressed ‘the need to ensure that the invocation of national security is not used arbitrarily to restrict freedom of expression.’

“Governor Bago reportedly ordered the immediate shutdown of Badeggi, a privately owned radio station in Minna, ordered the station’s premises to be marked for demolition and requested the Commissioner of Homeland Security to profile the station’s owner; Shuaibu Badeggi, on unfounded allegations that the station ‘promotes violence.

“Governor Bago also reportedly stated that the ‘daily activities of the radio station have been unethical’, and accused the owner of the station of incitement of the people against the government.

“A journalist’s or a radio station’s right to freedom of expression is protected even if the opinion advanced is not positively received.

“The Nigerian Constitution and human rights treaties protect the press not merely so that specific journalists may conduct their work; they protect the press in order to guarantee the public’s right of access to information in the public interest.

“The free communication of information and ideas about public and political issues between citizens, candidates and elected representatives is essential. This implies a free press and other media to be able to comment on public issues without censorship or restraint and to inform public opinion.”

SERAP and NGE are therefore asking the court for the following reliefs:

  1. A DECLARATION that by the combined provisions of section 22 Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended) section 2(1)(t) of the National Broadcasting Act, the NBC is obligated by law to protect Badeggi FM station and other broadcasting outlets in Nigeria from undue interference from unauthorized persons or entity.
  2. A DECLARATION that the failure and or neglect of the NBC to protect and defend the independence of the radio station against arbitrary executive interference constitutes a breach of its statutory duty to ensure fair, independent, and lawful broadcasting practices in Nigeria.
  3. A DECLARATION that the ongoing intimidation and threat issued by Governor Bago to strip Badeggi FM station of its operational licence and further threat to demolish the station’s premises is unlawful and a violation of the rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and media freedom.
  4. A DECLARATION that the threat issued by Governor Bago to strip Badeggi FM radio station of its operational licence encroaches upon the statutory powers of the NBC provided for under section 2 of the National Broadcasting Commission Act, thereby rendering the decision of the NBC ultra vires its constitutional duties and unlawful.
  5. AN ORDER of perpetual injunction restraining the NBC, its agents and privies from harassing, intimidating and/or threatening to revoke the operating licence of Badeggi FM station or any other broadcasting outlet in Niger State.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the suit.

No room for Obi, Atiku, Amaechi’s coalition in Ondo, says Aiyedatiwa

Ondo State governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has said that those flouting the coalition to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections are day dreamers and unserious politicians who have no better plans for the country.

Speaking yesterday while receiving Hon. Dayo Awude, a former deputy governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP), into the fold of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akure, Aiyedatiwa declared that there is no room for the coalition of the opposition figures in Ondo.

The governor said that the governing APC remained the sole rallying force for credible politicians in the state ahead of the 2027 general election.

“In Ondo State, there is no room for coalition. It is one APC. People join political parties for different reasons, but the interest of the party must always supersede every other interest, and for us in the APC, that interest is to retain power,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa lauded the defectors, led by Awude under the Sunshine Grassroots Network (SGN), saying they have made the right decision ahead of the general election to join the APC.

He told the defectors to begin grassroots mobilisation in earnestly for the party ahead of the general elections, saying the APC must retain power at the federal and states levels.

“You have made the right decision. This is the right place to be because the utmost interest for any political party is to be in power. For us in APC, we want to retain power, and we must do everything that is needed to retain the power.

“We acknowledge that you have decided to join us. Your coming will be rewarded. As you can see, the dividends of good governance are showing itself under the leadership of President Tinubu and i as your governor in the state,” he said.

While likened the party’s confidence to “the evidence of good governance” under President Bola Tinubu and his own administration, the governor added that the latest wave of defections to the APC will deliver greater numbers” of votes for the party in the election.

“Our declaration for Asiwaju is that Ondo State is for Tinubu in 2027. The whole of Ondo state is for Tinubu come 2027, and to realise that, you have decided to join us. We know winning Ondo state is not an issue but to have overwhelming votes, and you are the evidence of those votes.”

Awude, who ran alongside LP’s governorship candidate, Sola Ebiseeni in 2023, said he joined the APC to add value, adding that he was willing to support President Tinubu and governor Aiyedatiwa’s developmental agenda.

Ade Adetimehin, the state chairman of the APC, who welcomed the decampees, urged them to strengthen the party from the grassroots.

He also urged them to begin canvassing votes for the party starting their units and wards levels.

The latest defection marks a blow to the LP’s influence, especially in Ondo state and its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as political realignment intensifies ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi had joined Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi to form the coalition of opposition figures in the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Ekweremadu: Father of David Nwamini, boy in UK kidney transplant case, dies

Mr. Felix Nwamini Ukpo, father of David Ukpo Nwamini — the young man at the centre of the high-profile UK illegal kidney transplant case involving former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu — has died.

The death, which occurred on Sunday, was confirmed by one of his sons and David’s sibling, Boniface Nwamini Ukpo. Boniface said their father’s death was linked to the emotional shock and heartbreak of not seeing or hearing from David since 2022, when the transplant saga began.

In 2022, David was allegedly taken to the United Kingdom to donate a kidney to Ekweremadu’s daughter, Sonia. However, he later reported to the police, leading to the arrest of Mr. Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and Nigerian doctor, Obinna Obeta.

The trio were charged and, in March 2023, convicted by a London court of conspiring to arrange the travel of a man for the purpose of harvesting his organs. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it was the country’s first illegal organ-harvesting prosecution.

Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison, his wife to four years and six months, and Dr. Obeta — described as a middleman — to 10 years.

Since the conviction, little has been heard from David or his family. Boniface revealed that the family has had no contact with David since the incident.

“Yes, my father died yesterday (Sunday) afternoon at about 12 p.m. It’s so sad that since the incident happened in 2022, we have not spoken with my brother, David,” Boniface said. “My father had been sick over the saga, and yesterday he finally died.”

Akpabio hale and hearty in London – Gbenga Daniel

…Gbenga Daniel backs implementation of 2014 national confab report

…APC’ll win Ogun bye-election – Akpabio

ABUJA- CHAIRMAN, Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Gbenga Daniel, APC, Ogun East, has described as untrue, a media report alleging that the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio has been hospitalised in an unnamed hospital in London.

Daniels disclosed that he had a stopover in London to inform the Senate President on his planned return to Nigeria to partake in the August 16th bye-election to fill the vacant seat of the Ikenne/ Sagamu/ Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, which was declared vacant following the death of former Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon Adewumi Onanuga.

The former Governor of Ogun State said, ” I am here to formally inform you, Mr Senate President, that I will be returning to Nigeria to partake in the August 16th bye-elections into the Ikenne/Sagamu/ Remo North Federal Constituency, which was declared vacant after the death of late Hon Onanuga. Your Excellency, the news out there is that you have been indisposed, but seeing you here now paints a very different picture. Congratulations, Your Excellency.”

In a statement, the Special Assistant on Media to Akpabio, Jackson Udom, said that in his response, Akpabio thanked the Ogun State Senator for coming to inform him of the August 16th bye-election and his decision to return home to be part of it.

Akpabio assured the former Governor that from information at his disposal, the ruling party will carry the day, saying, “With the commitments and support of Governor Dapo Abiodun, your good self and other stakeholders of our party in the state, we will retain the House of Representatives seat at the end of the election.”

“Let me congratulate you in advance, because you have all it takes to retain that Federal Constituency seat for our great party. You are from there and interestingly, the Governor is also from there, so I don’t harbour any fear.”

On his purported sickness, as reported by some sections of the media, particularly social media, Akpabio said, “If you listen to the social media, you will go to war.”

Customs Intercepts N10bn Firearms, Expired Drugs At Lagos Port

The Nigeria Customs Service yesterday announced the interception of a cache of arms, ammunition, expired pharmaceuticals and drugs valued at N10 billion at the Apapa Port, Lagos.

Comptroller-General of the Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who disclosed this yesterday, said the illicit goods were discovered in 16 containers at the Apapa Island Port in Lagos.

The Customs boss, however, said six suspects have since been arrested in connection with the seizures.

Adeniyi revealed that the containers were falsely declared to contain other items, but upon inspection, were found to hold large quantities of arms, ammunition, and expired medications.

The Comptroller-General, who commended the other sister agencies, especially officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), stated that the ban on the use of bonded terminals for the clearance of pharmaceuticals still subsists.

He explained that the importation of the containers violated laws and threatened the peace and security of the country.

“Today, it gives me pleasure to announce the seizure of 16 containers of goods whose importation violates our laws and threatens our collective peace and security. The duty paid value of all these seizures is more than N10bn,” Adeniyi said.

Giving details of the seizures, he explained that on receipt of credible information by Customs’ personnel, a 40ft container with registration number MRSU6407089 was jointly examined by the officers and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

Adeniyi added that initially, the container was adjudged clean, but a secondary search by the two agencies revealed the concealment of 202 cans of Colorado loud, a Canadian drugs.

“Each of the cans weighs 500 grams, and the total seizure involved is 101 kilograms. However, the intel available to us suggests that it is not only about drugs inside the container. Acting on this advice, the CAC was directed to deploy scanners and subject these containers to scanning.

“And when this was done, arms and ammunition were discovered inside the container. Two pump-action rifles and 25 cartridges of ammunition were discovered.

“Also discovered was one Smith & Wesson pistol with 55 rounds of ammunition, one blank, and several accessories,” he added

Adeniyi mentioned that other seizures include seven containers of expired drugs and prohibited medications, three containers of expired food items, particularly margarine, and three containers of absolutely prohibited used clothing.

The CGC highlighted that over the weekend, the service also launched an operation where a 40-foot container was seized.

“And it contained 1,290 sacks of frozen poultry products. Another container, FBIU5507953, a 40-ft container, also had 1,290 sacks of frozen chicken. Another interesting seizure has to do with an importation that has infringed intellectual property rights,” he added.

Speaking further, the CGC stated that one of the containers had 305 cartons of toothpaste that were concealed with beads and a ‘Jalabiya’ dress.

“It was a case of infringement of a brand owned by a Nigerian company. Because these products were also not registered by the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control in addition to the brand infringement, they are subject to seizure.

“Two other containers of expired chest and lung tablets without NAFDAC registration number were also seized,” he added.

Adeniyi said that the Service also intercepted two 40-foot containers carrying codeine.

“These two containers have also been seized. And the information that we had on these containers is linking the owners to those of the previous ones that we have made,” Adeniyi said.

“A total of five arrests have been made. Out of the five, three have been charged and they have appeared in court. And they are presently remanded in Ikoyi Prisons pending the hearing of the substantive case sometime next month,” Adeniyi said.

General Overseer nabbed in cross-border drug trafficking bust

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested the founder and General Overseer of The Turn of Mercy Church, Prophet Adefolusho Olasele, also known as Abbas Ajakaiye, over his alleged role in multiple shipments of illicit drugs from Ghana to Nigeria.

Olasele, who had been on the run for months, was apprehended on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at his church in Okun Ajah, Lekki, Lagos.

A statement on Sunday by the agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said operatives waited until the end of the Sunday Service before arresting him as he stepped out of the premises.

According to him, the pastor fled to Ghana in June to evade arrest after operatives linked him to two cannabis seizures — 200kg recovered at the Okun Ajah beach on June 4 and 700kg found in his delivery van on July 6.

After months of fleeing abroad to evade arrest, Olasele (alias Abbas Ajakaiye) was arrested for masterminding multiple shipments of illicit drugs into Nigeria.

“Prophet Adefolusho was arrested at his church located in Okun Ajah, Ogombo Road, Lekki area of Lagos on Sunday, August 3, 2025, by the NDLEA officers who waited for him since morning to conclude the Sunday worship service in the evening before moving in on him the moment he stepped out of the church premises.

“The arrest came after he had evaded arrest twice and fled to Ghana to hide since June when operatives started trailing him following the seizure of two shipments of Ghana Loud, a strain of cannabis linked to him. The first seizure of 200kg of the psychoactive substance was made at the Okun Ajah beach on June 4, 2025, while another consignment of 700kg of the same substance was recovered from his delivery van on July 6, 2025.”

In his statement, Babafemi claimed the pastor confessed to ferrying the consignments via waterways from Ghana. He said, “In his statement, he admitted ferrying the illicit consignments through the waterways from Ghana into Nigeria, adding that he had fled to the West African country to hide after he escaped arrest twice in the recent past.”

In a separate operation in Lagos on Thursday, Babafemi also stated that the NDLEA operatives raided an apartment at the Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, where they arrested Benjamin Ukoh and recovered 32 pouches of Canadian Loud, weighing 15.63kg.

“In Nasarawa State, the NDLEA operatives on Saturday, August 9, recovered a large consignment of skunk, a strain of cannabis weighing 3,093 kilograms, from the trio of Emmanuel Asoquo Johnny, 51; Okem Raphael, 33, and Chekwube Odo, 25, at the New Karu area of the state.

“While 29-year-old Nura Yahaya was nabbed at Geza area of Kumbotso Kano State with 639 blocks of skunk weighing 359kg on Friday, August 8, another suspect Umar Adamu Umar, 27, was taken into custody on Wednesday, August 6, by the NDLEA officers after seizing 9kg of Colorado, a synthetic strain of cannabis from him along Zaria-Kano Road, Kano,” the statement added.

In Gombe State, Babafemi stated that a raid on an uncompleted building in Tudun Wadan Pantami on Friday led to the recovery of 550,266 opioid pills and the arrest of Usama Isah.

“The following day, Saturday, August 9, another suspect, Ibrahim Adamu, 23, was arrested by the NDLEA officers along Potiskum Road, Bajoga, with 50,000 capsules of tramadol”, he added.

In Edo State, a Toyota Hiace bus travelling from Onitsha to Isanlu, Kogi State, was intercepted at the Ewu junction on Wednesday, with 23,940 tramadol capsules, 1,100 tablets, and 400 pentazocine ampoules. The driver, Taiye Jethro, was arrested.

Commending the officers involved, the NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), urged personnel nationwide to maintain a balanced approach to drug control operations.

Gunmen abduct six passengers, demand ATM PINs in Taraba

Gunmen have abducted at least six passengers, including five women and a bus conductor, along the Takum–Katsina Ala Road in Taraba State.

According to security analyst, Zagazola Makama, who shared the update in a post on X yesterday, the incident happened on Sunday morning at Kampo Village when the armed men, numbering about six, intercepted a Toyota Hummer bus belonging to Dan Pullo Transport Company.

“The bus, which was travelling from Rivers State to Gembu, was forced off the road and driven into the bush. They took the passengers’ phones, ATM cards, and cash, then asked for the PINs. Five women and the conductor who didn’t give the right numbers were taken away, while the rest were released,” Makama wrote.

Police patrol teams, local hunters, and Area Command operatives later combed the area, but the victims were not found.

Efforts are ongoing to rescue them and arrest the suspects.

Nigerian Govt arraigns Al-Shabab terrorists over killing of 40 worshippers in Owo church

The Federal Government yesterday arraigned five men before a Federal High Court in Abuja over their alleged involvement in the June 5, 2022 attack at St. Francs Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State, in which over 40 worshippers died

The five accused persons are Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris and Momoh Otuho Abubakar.

Ibom Air passenger charged to court over ‘unruly’ act, remanded in prison

A passenger who assaulted airline officials on an Ibom Air flight inbound Lagos from Uyo, Comfort Emmanson, has reportedly been charged to court.

The Special Adviser to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, who revealed this, said Emmanson has been remanded in the Kirikiri correctional facility.

Moshood disclosed this in a post on X yesterday shortly after the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, said enforcement action will soon become more frequent in Nigerian airports as unruly conduct by passengers becomes rampant.

The development is coming on the heels of a similar incident involving popular Fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, aka KWAM 1 or K1 and an airline, ValueJet.

The musician attempted to stop the aircraft from taking off after he was deboarded.

World Bank approves $300m loan for IDPs, host communities

The World Bank has approved $300m in financing for Nigeria to strengthen resilience and expand access to essential services for Internally Displaced Persons and their host communities in Northern Nigeria.

In a statement yesterday, World Bank Nigeria said the approval, granted on August 7, 2025, will fund the Solutions for the Internally Displaced and Host Communities Project, targeting selected local government areas most affected by conflict-driven displacement.

The project is expected to benefit up to 7.4 million people, including about 1.3 million IDPs, by adopting an integrated development strategy aligned with Nigeria’s long-term development vision.

The statement read, “The World Bank has approved on August 7, $300m in financing for the Solutions for the Internally Displaced and Host Communities Project (SOLID).

“This initiative will enhance access to essential services and economic opportunities for Internally Displaced Persons and host communities in selected Local Government Areas in Northern Nigeria.

“By adopting an integrated development strategy, the SOLID Project seeks to help both IDPs and host communities move towards greater self-sufficiency and resilience, in line with Nigeria’s long-term development goals.”

The Bank stated that ongoing conflict and insecurity in the region have displaced over 3.5 million people, putting significant strain on local infrastructure and services in areas where IDPs have settled.

It added that the influx has heightened competition for scarce resources, limited livelihood opportunities, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters such as flooding, while local governments struggle to meet the needs of both residents and displaced populations.

The project will build on the Nigerian government’s existing initiatives, previous international interventions, and the earlier World Bank-funded Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project, which focused on short-term recovery.

It will prioritise developing and maintaining climate-resilient infrastructure, promoting social cohesion and community resilience through participatory planning and economic cooperatives, supporting livelihoods to enable economic activities for both IDPs and host communities, and strengthening institutions to respond to demographic pressures caused by displacement.

“We are glad to support this initiative, which has a tremendous potential to help Nigeria in addressing development challenges associated with protracted displacement in a sustainable way,” the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Mathew Verghis, said.

“The project’s integrated approach, aligned with the National IDP Policy and the Federal Government’s long-term vision, will ensure that IDPs and host communities can transition from dependency on humanitarian assistance to self-reliance and resilience, opening up better economic opportunities.”

The Bank said the project would be implemented through a coordinated, community-driven approach involving all tiers of government, with strong collaboration from international stakeholders.

Task Team Leaders, Fuad Malkawi and Christopher Johnson, described the initiative as central to addressing the enduring displacement crisis in Northern Nigeria, highlighting its role in tackling infrastructure gaps and service delivery challenges in already strained host communities.

According to the statement, they said targeted livelihoods support under the project would help displaced and host populations achieve sustainable economic outcomes, facilitating the region’s transition from crisis response to stability, resilience, and inclusive growth.

Meanwhile, data from the Debt Management Office showed that Nigeria’s total debt to the World Bank rose to $18.23bn as of March 31, 2025.

This marked a $420m increase in just three months since December 2024, when Nigeria’s total exposure to the World Bank stood at $17.81bn.

The DMO data showed that borrowings from the International Development Association, the concessional financing arm of the World Bank, rose from $16.56bn in December 2024 to $16.99bn in March 2025.

At the same time, loans from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development — the non-concessional lending window of the World Bank — remained unchanged at $1.24bn.

In total, the World Bank Group now accounts for $18.23bn, or about 39.7 per cent of Nigeria’s total external debt stock, which stood at $45.98bn as of March 2025.

This reflected a marginal increase in the World Bank’s share of the debt portfolio, up from 38.9 per cent recorded in December 2024 and 36.4 per cent at the end of 2023.

Further analysis indicated that the World Bank now constitutes 81.2 per cent of Nigeria’s total multilateral debt, which reached $22.43bn in Q1 2025.

This represented a rise from the 79.8 per cent share recorded at the end of 2024 and underlines the central role the institution continues to play in Nigeria’s financing framework.

Dele Farotimi dismisses Jonathan’s political return, urges focus on structural problems

Human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, has dismissed suggestions of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan returning to frontline politics, insisting that no leader can fix Nigeria without addressing its deep-rooted structural problems.

Reacting to reports of Jonathan’s possible re-emergence ahead of the 2027 elections during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily yesterday, Farotimi said leadership changes alone would not solve the country’s challenges.

“A thousand Goodluck Ebele Jonathans cannot solve the problems of Nigeria. They might as well go ahead to increase his brain powers by factors of a thousand for good measure. If we do not address our structural problems and tell ourselves the basic truths we owe to ourselves, nothing is going to change,” he stated.

Farotimi noted that Jonathan was once heavily criticised and removed amid promises of a better Nigeria, yet the same issues persist.

“They can recycle all these people as many times as they care. This was the same Jonathan that was horribly vilified and labelled. The press, the pulpit, and the mosque all said his removal would solve our problems, and here we are,” he said.

He stressed that the nation’s problems transcend individuals, warning that removing current President Bola Tinubu without reforming the system would only perpetuate failure.

“If you removed Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office today, and you do not touch that evil system that has produced the kind of people who have ruined the country, all this talk about Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is just more distraction from the political ‘ruinning’ class,” Farotimi argued.

The activist emphasised the need for institution-building rather than seeking a political “messiah.”

“It’s about building enduring systems. How do you rebrand a failure of 2015 into a saint and saviour in 2025? Ten years have gone full cycle, and we’re back saying we were better off where we were,” he added.

Nationwide fuel distribution: Dangote Refinery takes delivery of CNG trucks

Dangote Refinery has announced the delivery of its first shipment of compressed natural gas trucks to facilitate its nationwide premium motor spirit and automotive gas oil supply from August 15, 2025.

The 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery disclosed this in a statement by its spokesperson, Anthony Chijiena, on Sunday.

According to him, the refinery, the N720 billion worth investment scheme, is aimed at transforming Nigeria’s fuel distribution landscape by reducing logistics costs and enhancing supply efficiency for customers.

“The fleet of fuel tankers, being imported through Apapa Port, represents a significant capital investment estimated at N720 billion.

“The first consignment of trucks recently departed Apapa Port and was formally received at the refinery site in Ibeju-Lekki by the Vice-President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Ltd., Devakumar Edwin,” the statement reads.

It would be recalled that Dangote Refinery had announced that the fuel distribution scheme would cause a major shakeup in the country’s oil and gas downstream sector.

However, petroleum product retail outlet owners and the Natural Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria have, in different forums, kicked against the scheme, saying it would result in massive job losses.

NIMC announces upgrade of NIN enrolment portal for Nigerians in diaspora

The National Identity Management Commission announced that it has successfully upgraded the Diaspora National Identity Number enrolment portal.

The agency disclosed this in a statement by its spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke, yesterday.

According to NIMC, the upgrade would help provide a seamless, robust, more secure, efficient, and effective NIN service delivery to Nigerians in the Diaspora.

“To ensure effective service delivery and smooth management of the National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment in the Diaspora, the National Identity Management Commission has successfully upgraded its diaspora enrolment platform.

“The upgrade process, which was successfully completed, will, amongst many other benefits, provide a seamless, robust, more secure, efficient, and effective NIN service delivery to Nigerians in the Diaspora.

“Consequently, NIMC Diaspora Front-End Partners (FEPs) have been onboarded on the upgraded system with intensive training to equip the FEPs with the prerequisite knowledge on the application and effective management of the new system.

“While all the Diaspora FEPs are required to obtain and activate their NIN enrolment licences on the upgraded platform within the next forty-eight hours (48 hours), diaspora applicants can access enrolment services from the compliant FEPs.

“The Commission apologises for any inconvenience the platform upgrade process might have caused and has set up a dedicated service team to resolve all issues related to diaspora enrolment. Diaspora applicants experiencing issues with NIN enrolment should please reach the Commission.”

This came as NIMC also reiterated that NIN enrolment is ongoing across all the centres in Nigeria.

“Applicants can locate the nearest enrolment centres on the NIMC website—www.nimc.gov.ng—and proceed for enrolment,” the statement partly reads.

NIMC added, “NIN Holders are equally enjoined to download the NIMC NINAuth App on either the iOS or Google Play Store to instantly verify their NINs, approve who sees their information, take total control of their data, and enjoy seamless verification and authentication services.”

Coalition: Resign from your parties, register with us – ADC to Atiku, Obi, others

The Non-resigned National Executive Committee of the ADC, of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has said leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rauf Aregbesola and others are welcomed into the party but must formally resign from previous parties.

The NEC said that the new entrants must also register as ADC members at ward levels in home states in line with the regulations of the Electoral Act 2022.

According to them, failure to comply with the rules, the politicians risk legal challenges that will undermine the coalition’s credibility.

The Non-resigned National Executive Committee of the ADC, called for calm among party members over the heated debate associated with the position of its National Chairmanship.

In a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, the party hailed its outgoing National Chairman, Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, for what they described as his visionary leadership.

The NEC also affirmed Nafiu Bala, its former Deputy National Chairman, as the legitimate Acting National Chairman.

The party rejected what it described as unconstitutional takeover attempts, adding, “We denounce recent efforts to install parallel leadership.

“The purported ‘resignation letter’ of Nafiu Bala (dated May 18, 2025) is confirmed fraudulent, lacking official ADC letterhead and contradicted by Nwosu’s July 2 statement,” they said.

“We welcome leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rauf Aregbesola and others but we emphasize formal resignation from previous parties must be documented.

“Registration at ward levels in home states is mandatory per the Electoral Act.

“Failure to comply risks legal challenges and undermines coalition credibility.

“Hon. Nafiu Bala will oversee daily operations and prepare for a National Convention within 90 days. “We will seek INEC’s formal endorsement of Bala’s acting chairmanship and litigate counterfeit documents.

“It call on its members to report irregularities to the NWC Secretariat and pphold Article 9.5 which says that “No non-member shall hold office.”

I’m not important’ – VeryDarkMan reacts to visions of his death

Popular Nigerian activist, VeryDarkMan, has reacted to the revelations of his demise by prophets.

The reports had it that two prophets from Nigeria and Ghana had given revelations about VeryDarkMan’s death.

One of the unidentified prophets, in a video while addressing his congregation, said in Yoruba: “There are activists in this country that they will soon end in Nigeria. One of the activists will be imprisoned. The other one will be killed because they said they have nothing to lose.”

The second prophet said: “This is for VDM. Bad politicians have taken him to a river. VDM is dead in the river but still alive in the physical world. And it’s very bad for your face to be inside a river. Whether VDM likes it or not, he will leave the world unexpectedly.”

Reacting to the videos in a post shared on his Instagram page on Sunday, VeryDarkMan, also known as VDM, stated that death is inevitable.

He further asked the prophets to see a vision about how Nigeria will be great.

“You heard the pastor, although he didn’t mention my name, but he made reference to what I usually say, which is I have nothing to lose. That’s number one.

“You are seeing vision for me as if I’m one person that sees himself to be important. I’m not important. Death is inevitable and is coming for all of us. Tell us a vision about our country. Tell us when Nigeria will be a great country.”

Abia demolishes unapproved buildings in Umuahia market

Gov Otti

The Umuahia Capital Development Authority, acting under the directive of the Abia State Government, has commenced the demolition of buildings within the former Umuahia market, popularly known as Ogwumabiri, stating that the structures were built without government authorisation.

A statement released by the General Manager of UCDA, Mr Kingsley Agomoh, yesterday said the demolition is part of a broader vision to transform Umuahia into a modern, world-class capital city.

He said the former market space was allocated to a private investor by the previous administration for the purpose of building an event centre on a build, operate, and transfer arrangement.

The statement read, “In line with the Abia State Government’s vision to transform Umuahia into a modern city and a befitting capital, the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has commenced the demolition of unauthorised residential structures built within the former Umuahia market premises without government approval.

“The former market space was allocated to a private investor by the previous administration to build an Event Centre on a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) basis.

“However, the investor unilaterally repurposed the space and started developing residential duplexes and apartments, contrary to the government’s planned purpose for the space.”

Agomoh explained that the Abia State Government has been engaging the investor for the past one year and has offered a negotiated ex-gratia settlement that involves taking over the space for the building of a modern transportation hub that would integrate a bus terminal, a train station, and intercity shuttles.

“As a responsible and business-friendly administration, the government has been engaging the investor for the past year and has offered a negotiated ex gratia settlement to the investor.

“The government has taken over the space to repurpose it as part of a modern transportation hub, integrating the bus terminal, train station, and intercity shuttle connection point. The structures demolished were deemed unfit for the established purpose of overriding public interest.

“The UCDA is committed to ensuring that the new transportation hub enhances the city’s infrastructure, promotes efficient mobility, and contributes to the overall economic growth of Umuahia as a modern capital city,” the statement added.

Gaza mourns six journalists killed in Israeli attack

Gazans gathered yesterday for the funeral of five Al Jazeera staff members and a sixth reporter killed in an Israeli strike, with Israel calling one of them a “terrorist” affiliated with Hamas. Dozens stood amid bombed-out buildings in the courtyard of Al-Shifa hospital to pay their respects to Anas al-Sharif, a prominent Al Jazeera correspondent aged 28, and four of his colleagues, killed on Sunday.

A sixth journalist, Mohammed Al-Khaldi, who worked as a freelance reporter, was also killed in the strike that targeted the Al Jazeera team, according to the director of Al-Shifa Hospital, Dr Mohammed Abu Salmiya. Their bodies, wrapped in white shrouds with their faces exposed, were carried through narrow alleys to their graves by mourners, including men wearing blue journalists’ flak jackets.

Israel confirmed it had targeted Sharif, whom it labelled a “terrorist” affiliated with Hamas, saying he “posed as a journalist”. Al Jazeera said its employees were hit in a tent set up for journalists outside the main gate of a hospital in Gaza City. The four other staff members killed were Mohammed Qreiqeh, also a correspondent, and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa.

“Anas Al-Sharif served as the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organisation and was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF (Israeli) troops,” the military said in a statement.

“The IDF had previously disclosed intelligence information and many documents found in the Gaza Strip, confirming his military affiliation to Hamas,” it said.

It published a graphic showing what it said was a list of Hamas operatives in northern Gaza, including Sharif’s name, as well as an image of him emblazoned with the word: “Eliminated”. Sharif was one of the channel’s most recognisable faces working on the ground in Gaza, providing daily reports on the now 22-month-old war.

A posthumous message, written in April in case of his death, was published on his account on Monday morning, saying he had been silenced and urging people “not to forget Gaza”. According to local journalists who knew him, Sharif had worked at the start of his career with a Hamas communication office, where his role was to publicise events organised by the militant group that has exercised total control over Gaza since 2006. Following online posts by Israel’s Arabic-language military spokesman Avichai Adraee on Sharif, the Committee to Protect Journalists called in July for his protection, accusing Israel of a “pattern” of labelling journalists militants “without providing credible evidence”. Al Jazeera said five had been killed: correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa. (Photo by Omar AL-QATTAA / AFP)

It said the Israeli military had levelled similar accusations against other journalists in Gaza earlier in the war, including other Al Jazeera staff.

Al Jazeera called the attack that killed Sharif “a desperate attempt to silence voices exposing the Israeli occupation”, as it described Sharif as “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists”. It also said it followed “repeated incitement and calls by multiple Israeli officials and spokespersons to target the fearless journalist Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues”.

Reporters without Borders says nearly 200 journalists have been killed in the war so far.

International reporters are prevented from travelling to Gaza by Israel, except on occasional, tightly controlled trips with the military.

The strike on the journalists came with criticism mounting over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to expand the war in the Gaza Strip.

The security cabinet voted last week to conquer the remaining quarter or so of the territory not yet controlled by Israeli troops, including much of Gaza City and Al-Mawasi, the area designated a safe zone by Israel where huge numbers of Palestinians have sought refuge.

The plan, which Israeli media reported had triggered bitter disagreement between the government and military leadership, drew condemnation from protesters in Israel and numerous countries, including Israeli allies.

Notably, the plans caused Germany, a major weapons supplier and staunch ally, to suspend shipments to Israel of any arms that could be used in Gaza.

Mourners march with the bodies of the Al Jazeera journalists who were killed in an overnight Israeli strike on their tent in Gaza City, from Al-Shifa hospital to their burial at the Sheikh Radwan cemetery in Gaza City on August 11, 2025. Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera said on August 11 that five of its journalists were killed in an Israeli strike. Al Jazeera said five had been killed: correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa. Australia said on Sunday it would join a growing list of Western nations in recognising a Palestinian state.

Despite the diplomatic reversals, Netanyahu remained defiant.

“We will win the war, with or without the support of others,” he told journalists on Sunday.

He also retained the backing of Israel’s most important ally, the United States, with President Donald Trump saying on Tuesday any military plans were “pretty much up to Israel”.

The United Nations and humanitarian agencies have condemned the planned expansion.

“If these plans are implemented, they will likely trigger another calamity in Gaza,” UN Assistant Secretary General Miroslav Jenca told the Security Council on Sunday.

UN agencies warned last month that famine was unfolding in the territory, with Israel severely restricting the entry of aid.

Israel’s offensive has killed at least 61,430 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry, figures the United Nations says are reliable.

Hamas’s October 2023 attack on Israel, which triggered the war, resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

Rotational presidency senseless – Sowore

A former Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has faulted the rotational presidency debate in the country.

The human rights activist stated this in an appearance on the Tuesday edition of Channels Television’s breakfast show, Sunrise Daily.

Sowore said the country should be interested in a president who will run Nigeria better, irrespective of his region.

“If I have a good president in Nigeria who can run this country very well, I don’t care where he comes from.

“That is what the majority of the Nigerian people are aspiring for. That is the idea of this federation that all the federating units should be able to have an opportunity.

“When you zone it to the north, the majority of the northerners would want to take a shot at it. When you zone it back to the south, the south of Nigeria is not Yoruba or Igbo alone. It is just senseless,” he said.

Sowore said that every presidential hopeful should be given a chance, adding that certain parameters like qualifications, manifestos, among others, should be considered, rather than the person’s geo-political zone.

He added, “Zoning the presidency to the worst character in the country is not going to make you get anywhere.

“Give everybody a chance. That is why they said, ‘Come and contest for president, governor, local government chairman, and present your agenda, speak to us, and we will look at your character, exposure, and vote for you’.”

He gave me his word’ – Aisha Yesufu speaks on Peter Obi’s one term presidency vow

Aisha Yesufu, a former co-convener of BringBackOurGirls, BBOG, has affirmed that a member of the opposition coalition, Peter Obi would only be President for one term if elected.

Yesufu disclosed that Obi affirmed his position of one term presidency to her personally.

She said the former Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate has always drawn inspiration from South African Nelson Mandela regarding the issue of one term presidency.

Posting on X, she recalled telling Obi during the campaign for the 2023 presidential election that Nigerians won’t allow him do just one term in office as President.

Yesufu wrote: “I, Aisha Yesufu can confirm that Mr Peter Gregory Obi has always said he would do just a term even before the 2023 election. I used to argue with him that one term is not enough and he can’t just refuse to contest.

“Infact I told him on several occasions while we were campaigning in 2022 that the people will not allow him to do just a term. He would use Nelson Mandela as example. He would explain that if one was ready to really work that a term was more than enough.

“I told him that I was going to speak of his promise to do one term only publicly and I needed his confirmation on doing a term as my integrity mattered to me and I wouldn’t want to say something and it turns out not to be so.

“Mr Peter Obi once again gave me his word that he was going to do only one term.

Anambra poll: Ogene appointed LP media director, knocks Soludo on one-term controversy

By Jeffrey Agbo

Ahead of the 2025 Anambra governorship election, the Labour Party candidate, Dr. George Moghalu, and his running mate, Mrs. IfeomaOkaro, have appointed Hon. AfamOgene as the party’s Director of Media and Publicity.
This strategic appointment comes as part of a broader team of seasoned technocrats, politicians, professionals, and grassroots mobilizers who will spearhead the party’s campaign efforts leading up to the November 8, 2025 election.
Rep Ogene, member of the House of Representatives and chairman of the Committee on Renewable Energy, is a seasoned journalist, editor and member, Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE).
The lawmaker, representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, stated in Awka on Tuesday that the Labour Party campaigns will focus on issues, “in the earnest hope that our co-contenders will abide by the same code of behaviour.”
Announcing the appointments on Monday in Awka, the Director General of the campaign organisation, Arch. OkeyChukwuogo, described the newly constituted council as a “broad-based team with the competence and commitment to deliver a people-centered, issue-driven campaign that reflects the hopes and aspirations of ndi Anambra.”
Referencing the ongoing conversation about candidates that pledged to serve only one term in office – which Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra had dismissed derisively – Rep. Ogene noted that the candidates do so out of deference to the widely accepted governorship arrangement in Anambra State.
He stated that this was, “Unlike Soludo, who was a serial governorship aspirant, including against an incumbent, until he was elected governor in 2021.”
The LP campaign spokesperson emphasized that a second term in office is not an entitlement, but rather earned through the people’s vote, following a critical appraisal of a first term’s performance.
“So, instead of haranguing opponents through sophistry, Soludo and his Party should be busy telling ndi Anambra what their scorecard reads, to warrant a second term in office.
“And just in case they have forgotten what the November 8, 2025 Anambra governorship election is all about, a quick reminder would suffice,” Ogene said.
Ogene: “The next election will be a referendum on such key issues as, security of lives and property; attraction of investments, foreign and indigenous; emotional intelligence in governance; and equity in government appointments and spread of infrastructure. And I can tell you that Prof. Soludo, who gleefully promised to turn Anambra into Africa Dubai and Taiwan, has failed woefully in all fronts.
“On security, after sleep-walking for three years, the Governor Soludo administration woke up one morning to announce the creation of Udogachi security apparatus. Devoid of any form of formal training, the hoopla over it’s creation lasted barely two months, before the state relapsed into a killing field, with banditry, kidnapping and assassination taking full rein. The thugs he hired to fight insecurity have brazenly become terrors to the very people they were supposed to protect, unleashing unimaginable cruelty with their ‘Aka odo’, weapon of impunity, pain and blood.
“Under his watch, no fewer than two State Assembly members (including Hon. Justice Azuka and another former member, Hon. OkechukwuOkoye, member that represented Aguata 11 Constituency in Anambra state Assembly, who was abducted in 2022, along with his personal aide just as he was entering his house in his Isuofia village in Aguata local government area. They were killed. Okoye’s severed head was later found somewhere at Nnobi where it was dumped.
“The latest incident was the son of the State Woman Leader of Governor Soludo’s party. In fact, the grim crime statistics of Anambra is so horrendous, that no day passes without one incident of kidnapping, banditry or killing in the State.
“On investment, of course, since security is ancillary to business growth, the Dr. George Muoghalu Organization hereby urges Governor Soludo to release a list of investments that he has attracted to the state over the last three years.
“Concerning emotional intelligence, the condescending manner of our Governor’s public utterances can only be equated with the crude deployment of ndi Aka odo to Anambra streets and parks,” the LP lawmaker said.
Also included in the campaign team are eminent professionals such as Barrister CJ OkoliAkirika, who will lead the Administration Directorate, while Prof. ObyOrogbu takes charge as Deputy Director in the Contact and Mobilisation unit.
Others include Hon. UchennaOkafor (Wiper) as Director of Parks and Markets; Prof. Patrick Nky Obi as Director of Support Groups and Persons with Disabilities; Barr. Jude Umennajiego and Dr. ObinnaNgonadi in Operations; and CP Mike Okoli (Rtd) as Director of Security.
“This council brings together some of Anambra’s best minds in law, media, strategy, grassroots mobilisation and governance,” Chukwuogo said. “We are assembling not just a campaign team, but a team of transformation.”

2027: Early campaigns violate Electoral Act, INEC cautions political parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), has cautioned political parties against early open campaigns for the 2027 General Election, describing it as a violation of the Electoral Act.

The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, MrRotimiOyekanmi, gave the advice in an interview in Abuja, while responding to a question about the current subtle campaigns and printing of posters going on in country ahead of the 2027 General election.

”Open campaigns are allowed before 150 days before polling day and must end 24 hours prior to that day.

“INEC has not released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections. To that extent, party primaries have not been held and no political party has nominated candidates for the next general election.

“Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 stipulates that the period of campaigning in public by political parties for an election shall begin 150 days before polling day and end 24 hours prior to that day.

“Section 95 (1) of the Act also states clearly that a candidate and his or her party shall campaign for an election in accordance with such rules and regulations as may be determined by INEC,” he said.

The press secretary said that while Nigerians have the right and liberty to engage in political discussions and express their views on the next general election, any open campaign or canvassing votes for the 2027 general election was not only inappropriate but a violation of the electoral act.

He drew the attention of all political parties in Nigeria to the situation at the commission’s last quarterly consultative meeting, adding that INEC expects full compliance with the law.

Obi not desperate to be president, just cares about Nigeria – Chimamanda

Renowned author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has described Labour Party’s Peter Obi as a principled leader who is not motivated by ego or desperation for political power.

Speaking during an interview.

Adichie commended Obi for remaining consistent and humble despite facing criticism and the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

“He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria, but he doesn’t need to be. And that is a very important distinction.

“There are people who are desperate to become president, not because they have any good intentions for the country, but because of their own personal egos,” she said.

Adichie said her support for Obi stems from her love for Nigeria and admiration for his values, which she believes resonate with many citizens.

Reflecting on their longstanding relationship, she added, “He is one of the simplest men I have ever known. He is genuine and consistent. The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same in terms of his values.”

She further lauded Obi’s approach to leadership and public service, noting that he doesn’t expect praise for fulfilling his responsibilities.

She said, “Peter Obi is not a person who expects you to thank him for doing his job as a leader, because to him, it’s his job. These are the reasons I support him.

“There’s a sense, I think, in Peter Obi that he’s accountable to the people. He doesn’t think that somehow, he will lord it over people.

Stranded Nigerians in Libyan deportation camp cry out for help

Nigerians held in a deportation camp in Libya have raised the alarm over inhumane conditions, calling on the Nigerian government and private organisations for urgent intervention.

In a viral video, a middle-aged man narrated the ordeal of several Nigerians crammed into a holding facility reportedly run by a United Nations agency.

He revealed that they have been confined in the camp for over seven months while awaiting deportation.

According to him, the number of detainees has dropped from about 700 to 400, with many allegedly dying due to maltreatment and poor living conditions. “People are dying almost every day,” he lamented.

The distressed detainees are pleading for swift rescue, describing the camp’s condition as unbearable and life-threatening.

He said, “These are Nigerians as you are watching this video, it is a clear picture of what we are passing through in Libya, today being the 5th of August.  For over 7 months that we have been in this so-called deportation camp, dying in numbers, both children, adults and teenagers and women.

“When you take a close look at this video, it will explain the conditions that Nigerians are in, right here in Libya, in a place called Brakchat, 60 kilometres away from Sabhā. And as we are watching this video, it is at our own expense because we are restricted from the use of phones.

“You can see how Nigerians have been lying here for over 7 months. And this is how we keep lying, and we keep counting dead souls daily. Even as of yesterday, we lost a child and a teenager here because of maltreatment and the punishments we are going through here.

“Please, as you are watching this video, it is a wake-up call for Nigeria’s intervention over our situation right here. And the number of Nigerians here is approximately 400 in number, though we were up to 700 when we came here. But the death rate here has declined to about 400 in approximation.

“Please, we have to do this video as proof to Nigeria over what we are passing through here. If you watch this video, you will see some of us are bandaged. Some of us cannot even bring our hands down because of the casualties and injuries that we have sustained.

“Even the UN, which is in charge of this deportation process, has none of its officials here to oversee what Nigerians are passing through here. Since we came here, none of them have come here to monitor the welfare and the well-being of the people. Even to some extent, when they come, they don’t allow them to come and see what people are passing through.

“These are Nigerians with skills and graduates in numbers, people with futures, fathers, youth, vibrant youth. But this is the situation we find ourselves in. Please, Nigerians, help us, corporate bodies, and individuals.

“When you watch these videos, you will see so many people’s conditions, how deteriorating it is without medication for over seven months. People who travel in sound health, but they cannot access life or a good life because of malnourishment and treatment daily, including our women. Wherever you are, individuals, organisations and agencies, please, as you watch this video, under the risks.

“It is for an intervention to come and take us back to our country. We came here to serve them, to work for them. We did not come here to steal or kill.

“But on the contrary, they are treating us as if we have committed an offence. And on our day of arrival, they collected all our valuables, our international passports, our phones, our money and other valuables such that we cannot reach out to our people. But we cannot die here like this.

“Even if we die here, let our country know what is going on here and the world at large. That is why we are taking these risks to do this video. It will be on the 5th of August, 2025.”

2027: Seven Nigerian govs may lose their second term — Primate Ayodele

Primate Elijah Ayodele, leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, has cautioned seven Nigerian governors about their second-term ambitions, stating that their return to office isn’t guaranteed.

The governors warned include: those of Akwa Ibom, Delta, Enugu, Cross River, Ondo, Kaduna, and Zamfara.

Primate Ayodele, in a statement signed by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin, revealed that these governors will have issues actualising their second-term ambition, making it known that except they pray and do all that is needed.

“The governors of Akwa Ibom, Delta, Enugu, Cross River, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Ondo must work well to get a second term in office.

“It’s not certain for them except they work hard and pray. This is a hint of what they should be expecting.

“They need to work very well so that they won’t lose their second-term ambition,” he revealed.

Primate Ayodele also warned the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to be careful and prayerful so that his second term as Senate President will not be traded.

“Senate President Godswill Akpabio must be very careful and prayerful to get a second term as Senate president. I see his position being traded; he must work very hard to avoid it.”

Likewise, Primate Ayodele revealed that prominent senators and members of the House of Representatives will not return for a second term, too, while warning Ned Nwoko of Delta against his governorship ambition, saying it’s not yet his time.

2027 is about APC, others — Uzodimma

Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma has said President Bola Tinubu remains the candidate to beat in the forthcoming general elections.

The Imo State Governor made the declaration yesterday when he paid a courtesy visit to the All Progressives Congress National chairman, Professor NentaweYilwatda, at the party’s national secretariat.

He was accompanied by Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo.

Responding to last Saturday’s outburst by former Kaduna State Governor, MallamNasir El-Rufai in Sokoto that a vote for Bola Tinubu in 2027 would court disaster for Nigerians, Senator Uzodimma dismissed it as a mere claim.

He said: “You called it a claim, it is their claim, not our claim. I know that there are only two parties in Nigeria, All Progressive Congress and Others.”

He said his visit to the party’s national secretariat was to seek an update on the e-registration exercise.

“We are here on a working visit. We came to monitor and evaluate the extent of the e-registration exercise, what has been done and we have inspected and conducted a trip round the facilities and we are highly impressed with what we saw and also confident that any moment from now our e-registration exercise will start in full force.”

The APC National Chairman who thanked Senator Uzodimma for the visit assured him and his Kogi counterpart that his leadership would sustain interface with the Forum of governors.

“You can see it, very cordial, very much so, we are exemplary. When it comes to APC, we are exemplary and you can see it in the way we conduct ourselves in the NEC, you can see how the Governors are relating with the party, you can see how the members are relating with the party, how we have made this party attractive to the people, attractive to the nation, attractive also to the Governors.”

The APC chairman also justified the investment in the party data centre and the e-registration exercise.

“So we are deepening our relationship every day and on this illustration, we are a leading party by far compared to any other political party and we want to ensure that we deepen technology, we ensure that we lead in all respects, in all ramifications and technology is one aspect that we are doing, so that we are leading also in that same respect, ensuring that we know the number of people are part of our own political party.

“We can actually know people who are going to vote for us, we can predict the number of people that are supporting us and deepen our base also in each state. “This is what we are doing, it will help us in research, it will help us in deepening technology, it will help our relationship in providing support for our members also at all levels.”

Tinubu signs insurance industry reform bill into law, targets $1trn economy

TINUBU

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday assented into law the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Bill, 2025, setting the stage for a reformed insurance landscape characterised by greater transparency, innovation, and global competitiveness.

The legislation aims to transform the financial sector and propel Nigeria closer to its $1 trillion economy ambition.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, BayoOnanuga, in Abuja, explained that the new legislation would catalyse a wave of reform-led growth in the financial services sector, positioning Nigeria as a regional insurance powerhouse and key destination for industry investment.

Specifically, the new law, now known as the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA), 2025, repeals and consolidates multiple obsolete insurance laws into a single, forward-looking framework.

It introduces a regulatory and supervisory regime for insurance and reinsurance businesses operating in the country.

Onanuga noted that the enactment of the NIIRA 2025 underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to financial stability, economic growth, and inclusive development, in line with its broader Renewed Hope Agenda.

The law sets the stage for a reformed insurance landscape characterised by greater transparency, innovation, and global competitiveness.

It is also expected to deepen insurance penetration, attract fresh investments, and strengthen consumer confidence in the sector.

Among the key reforms introduced by the NIIRA 2025 are: stricter capital requirements to ensure the financial health and solvency of insurance operators; mandatory enforcement of key insurance policies to enhance consumer protection; digitisation of insurance processes to expand access and drive operational efficiency; a zero-tolerance stance on delayed claims settlement, reinforcing trust and accountability; establishment of policyholder protection funds, especially in the event of insolvency; and deeper integration into regional schemes, including the ECOWAS Brown Card system.

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) is empowered to implement the provisions of the Act and ensure full compliance across the industry.

It is expected to play a pivotal role in unlocking the sector’s untapped potential and fostering a more inclusive insurance culture nationwide.

2027: If Obi can’t become president, support Tinubu – Rev Onuagha tells Ndigbo

Methodist Archbishop of Okigwe Archdiocese, and Bishop of Okigwe Diocese, Most Rev. BiereonwuLivinusOnuagha, has declared that Mr Peter Obi becoming the next president of Nigeria will be the best thing to happen in Nigeria.

Archbishop Onuagha, however, noted that President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration will be more acceptable to Nigeria than having a Northern man to become the president of the country when the Southern Nigeria has not completed its eight-year tenure of office like the Northerners had under late President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Methodist Archbishop said that it is the height of injustice for and North to begin to seek to occupy the office of the president when the Southern part of the country has not completed eight years like the North enjoyed under the late Buhari.

Onuagha who also stated that it is only Mr. Peter Obi that will bail Nigeria out of the wobbling situation it finds itself under the present administration but noted that Nigerians and Ndigbo in particular will prefer Tinubu to continue if Mr Obi fails to win the next presidential election.

Describing the fledgling political coalition in the African Democratic Congress,(ADC), as something that will not yield any fruit result if they fail to allow Mr Obi to be their presidential flag bearer, Archbishop Onuagha said that the greatest disservice the coalition will do to itself is have a Northerner as its flag bearer.

The Methodist Archbishop who expressed worry over the ambition of former Vice President AtikuAbubakar, said that the coalition will collapse if it fails to allow Mr Obi to be their party flagbearer.

And Dave Umahi call will be justified if Obi didn’t become their presidential flagbearer, and then I will urge Ndigbo and the Obedients to rally round Tinubu for second tenure.

“In fairness to the North, they have people who are qualified to rule Nigeria but fairness demands that they should step aside now and allow anybody will do better for the Southern extraction of the country or they allow Tonubu to complete his tenure.

“Nigeria does not need a Northerner to be the president now. What Nigeria need now is president from Southern extraction of the country. Nigerians should rather give total support to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, if they cannot get Mr Peter Obi to rule the country.

“Do you know why am saying this, Igbo’s have never gotten the type of favour from Federal Government, like we have this time around. Yes that is being selfish, but it is the truth.

“However let’s talk about those who are formed the African Democratic Congress ADC, foremost among them is Malian Nasirh El’ Rufus, former Governor of Kaduna State, everybody know his antics and activities in the immediate past administration.

His administration encouragedfarmers herders clashes and you all know the Southern Kaduna crisis and his stand. Christian in the that state have a lot of nasty story to tell about their ordeal while his administration lasted.

“What is he even coming to do in power again. Is it because he lost power under the present administration. Tinubu did not give him any position and now he is seeking with other to remove him, so that they can start from where they stopped under immediate past administration.

“I believe the Igbo’s are safer in the hands of President Tinubu, than in the hands of the likes of El’ Rufai, and other Morthern cabal who have now teamed up to wrestle power out of the hands of President Tinubu.

“Whom did Tinubu succeed, was it not Buhari that handed over power to Tinubu, after spending eight years in office. How can one justify that after eight years, the North is asking for power, to return to the office of the president, that is total selfishness. That is total injustice and unacceptable. That is against the power sharing formula.

“For equity and fairness, Southern Nigerian should continue in office. In fairness to to the Southern extraction of Nigeria, it is either Obi is allowed to become the president or President Tinubu to continue to complete his eight years tenure of office for the Southern Nigeria, but total no to giving it to the North because it is not their turn.

“South East, South West, South South are Middle Belt are pat of this country they should be allowed to rule this country, one section of the country cannot continue to rule in the country, it is not done in any

part of the world. It cannot be allowed only in Nigeria. Nigerians should not allow certain thing to happen in this country, we cannot continue to be passive towards certain things that happen in the country.

“If Tinubu is not good, somebody else from Southern Nigeria should be elected instead of the Northernes who are trying to wrestle power out of the hands of President Tinubu, people like former Vice President of Nigeria, AlhajiAtikuAnubakar, El’ Rufai, David Mark and others should go home and sit down and allow the Southern Nigerian person to flag their flag, only by so doing there will be equity and fairness and their plan will be achieved.

“No doubt Nigerians are crying because of strict measures the present administration came up with, especially, the removal of Fuel Subsidy, but I think the Igbo’s are better in the hands of Tinubu.

The only thing the Igbo’s don’t like is the wickedness and selfishness that is happening in Lagos State, under Governor SanwoOlu. However, the people of Lagos know that Igbo’s are the dominating population in Lagos so whatever they are doing it is for the moment.

“It is unfortunate that Governor SanwoOlu, who’s mother is a Christian, a Methodist Christian …, we can’t understand why under his administration the Igbos are subjected to humiliations and he is watching, supporting and enjoying it.

Yes, Mr Peter Obi our own brother is also in the coalition, When we talk about Peter Obi, a good son of Ndigbo, established, sensible, intelligent and focused, a man with a lot of integrity and an illustrious son of Ndigbo, he has good intentions for Nigeria but the powers that been do not want him.

He has tried but didn’t succeed, he has all it takes to bail Nigeria out and I will sincerely ask the obedient to rally round him but if Obi fails to emerge the candidate of ADC Coalition, they should rally round President Tinubu for his second tenure to deliver us from the greedy people that want to enjoy the turn of the Southern Nigeria.

“If we give an inch and try to push President Tinubu out without having Obi in, we will surely go into political quagmire that we may not know how to come out of. This is a golden opportunity and I pray that Peter Gregory Obi will succeed or he will understand if Tinubu is allowed to continue.

“You can see the confusion they are placing Obi in ADC, they are blocking him. Atiku said Nigeria wants only a Northerner and not an Igbo or Yoruba. The Northern like him have made up their mind to enslave us forever and that should not be allowed to happen. It is either we get Obi to be president or we comply with Dave Umahi call.

“I want to tell every Nigerian that Peter Obi is the best thing that will happen to Nigeria, but since Nigerians want him and the ruling class don’t want him and are blocking the way, what else can he do.

If we go on the streets to protest the Military will take over and who knows who will become the head of state if the military takes over.

“Please we need to think deep before we leap this time around. Sentiments apart, if we can’t have Obi become the president, let us listen to Dave Umahi. With all the loopholes, with all the wobbling under the present administration, it is better for us in this wobbling situation than to enter into a situation that many of us will regret. North, it is not your turn, wait for the South to complete their turn.”

Infidelity: Shock, as man commits suicide inside compound belonging to wife’s lover

By Jude Onyenedogha

A man, identified as Reginald, from Lawa in Ogbaku, Mbaitoli local government area of Imo state on Sunday, allegedly committed suicide over alleged infidelity acts of his wife.

Residents of Lawa community were said to have woken  up  on the fateful Sunday only to  behold  the dangling body of Reginald on near the premises of his wife’s alleged lover, Mr. Ukachukwu.

Village sources who volunteered information to our  reporter  narrated how Reginald’s body was discovered on a tree within Ukachukwu’s compound on Sunday, a development that has sparked condemnation and anger from residents of the area.

A villager, who pleaded anonymity also disclosed how  the deceased severally complained about the amorous relationship between his wife and Ukachukwu, but his concerns allegedly rebuffed by his wife.

Listen to him:  “We woke up this morning to see the dangling body of Reginald in the compound of Ukachukwu. We had seen him before complain about his wife and Ukachukwu, but nobody knew it would drive him to commit suicide. He has put the entire community in confusion, because we have not witnessed anything like this in the past.”

Efforts to get the reaction of the Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO) of Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) proved abortive, as he was yet to respond to the message sent to him by the reporter at the time of filing this report.

Protest against extortion by security agents: We’re against planned action, says PCRC

The planned August 7 protest by the people of Mbaise against harassment, extortion, and oppression by the security agents along the Owerri-Umuahia road may hit a brick wall as the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), has said it completely against the move, even as the Imo CP has warned his men to desist from action.

Addressing journalists in Owerri, yesteray, the State Chairman of the PCRC, Evangelist Bathran Uzodimma, said, the plan has been giving them concerns, saying the committee had already met with the Commissioner of Police, and the Army commander in the State, and disclosed that the heads of security agencies in Imo assured them that extortion must stop.

“We want to urge conveners of the protests to sheath the sword and enjoy peace. We have the interest of the people at heart. Let us give peace a chance in Imo”.

Earlier in his speech, the immediate-past Chairman of the Imo Police Community Relations Committee, Mr. Chima Chukwunyere, pointed out that they condemned the extortion by the security agents from motorists along the axis but had urged organizers of the August 7 protest to step it down.

He also noted, that CP Aboki Danjuma has assured of sending his men to fish out Police officers that had been found wanton.

Chukwunyere further said, they would start monitoring and urged people to call the numbers: 08081613573, or the Convener, Wisdom Anyanwu:0703013355,  09065185659 or the emergency room: 08034773600 or the PPRO on 0814824755 and said the wading- in of the CP would go a long way in addressing this clarion call by the people of Mbaise.
