Ex-US vice president Dick Cheney dies at 84

Former United States Vice-President, Dick Cheney, has died at the age of 84.

As reported by BBC and other reputable agencies yesterday, Cheney, who served under Republican President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, died on Monday night from complications of pneumonia as well as cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family.

“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025. He was 84 years old.

“His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed,” the family said in a statement.

The statement added that Cheney “died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease,” describing him as “a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honour, love, kindness, and fly fishing.”

“We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man,” the family added.

Born in 1941, Cheney served as President Gerald Ford’s White House Chief of Staff in the 1970s before spending a decade in the House of Representatives. He later became Secretary of Defence under President George H.W. Bush, overseeing the Gulf War in 1991.

As vice-president, Cheney was a key architect of the “war on terror” following the September 11 attacks and one of the earliest advocates of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

In later years, Cheney became one of the most vocal Republican critics of President Donald Trump. Two months before the 2024 U.S. presidential election, he announced his support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

Leaked audio exposes alleged plot to assassinate Sowore in Lagos

A leaked audio has revealed an alleged plot by suspected political thugs in Lagos State to assassinate human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

In the audio, a man identified as Timileyin Ishola Olafimihan, popularly known as “Is Nothing”, was heard boasting about a standing order to attack and kill Sowore whenever he is spotted in Lagos.

“If they catch Sowore, these people are not police, they are thugs. They are planning to kill him anywhere they see him,” the voice said.

Olafimihan allegedly warned supporters and activists not to accompany Sowore on his next trip to Lagos, insisting that “the boys have been mobilised and paid to do the job.”

The development reportedly followed Sowore’s active involvement in protests against the illegal demolition of houses in the Oworonshoki community in Lagos, which has displaced hundreds of residents.

When contacted, however, Olafimihan denied the assassination plot, claiming the viral audio was taken out of context.

“Don’t mind the audio. I was only joking, and the person I sent it to is like my neighbour. No thug is planning to assassinate Sowore,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, on Monday, declared Sowore “wanted” after the activist led a protest at Oworonshoki against the ongoing demolitions.

Speaking at the demolition site, CP Jimoh accused Sowore of “instigating unrest” and attempting to mobilise residents to obstruct traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge.

“I hereby, as the Commissioner of Police, Lagos Police Command, declare Sowore wanted,” Jimoh said.

“I declare him wanted for the act of causing disturbance of public peace and an attempt to commit serious felony by planning and putting all the plans in motion to obstruct traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge to cause hardship for Lagosians and other Nigerians. We will not allow this to happen.”

But, human rights lawyers Deji Adeyanju and Marshal Abubakar, condemned the Commissioner’s declaration, describing it as a “dangerous abuse of power” and a “blatant disregard for due process.”

“The unilateral declaration of a citizen as ‘wanted’ by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police is therefore a dangerous disregard for due process and the rule of law. Such a police commissioner who does not understand this basic principle is not a fit and proper person to hold that office,” Adeyanju said in a statement.

He further noted that declaring Sowore wanted for organising a protest was an attack on citizens’ constitutional rights.

“Declaring Omoyele Sowore ‘wanted’ for organising a protest is not the defence of public order. It is a warning shot against the right to dissent,” he said.

“The Nigerian Constitution itself guarantees the right to freedom of assembly, association, and expression. These rights were not granted by the police or any arm of government, they are inherent to citizenship.”

Adeyanju added that only a competent court of law can declare a person wanted, stressing that the Commissioner acted outside the limits of his authority.

“Only a competent court of law can make such a declaration, and it must be based on credible evidence and justifiable legal grounds,” he said.

Man arrested with 17 stolen handsets at Diri’s defection rally

Men of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Service on Monday arrested a suspected serial phone thief, identified simply as Francis, at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, Yenagoa, the venue of Governor Douye Diri’s defection to the All Progressives Congress.

The suspect, who reportedly confessed to travelling from Rivers State to take advantage of the large political crowd, was apprehended after a special tactical squad of the vigilante outfit closely monitored his suspicious movements.

A search of his bag led to the recovery of 17 mobile phones, ₦91,000 in cash, and multiple ATM cards, according to the Bayelsa State Vigilante Service.

In his preliminary confession, Francis admitted to working with an accomplice who narrowly escaped arrest.

He further revealed that they had already stolen over ₦400,000 before operatives intervened, adding that his fleeing partner possessed additional stolen phones.

The Chairman of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Service, Doubiye Alagba, who personally led the operation, handed the suspect over to officers of Operation Puff Adder of the Bayelsa State Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.

Alagba warned criminal elements to stay away from the state, stressing that his men are well-trained in intelligence gathering, behavioural monitoring and crowd surveillance to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

In 2024, the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command arrested one Ifeanyi Okonkwo, who was caught on Closed-Circuit Television stealing a phone at an eatery in Ikeja, Lagos State.

The RRS revealed that Okonkwo visited the restaurant to purchase food but ended up stealing a Samsung A15 mobile phone belonging to another customer

Woman fakes abduction, demands ₦5m ransom from husband in Edo

The Edo State Police Command said it has arrested a woman, Chioma Ezebie Adaniken and her accomplice for faking her kidnap. In a statement released yesterday, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said that the lady connived with her cousin and one other suspect, demanding N5 million for her release.
The statement read, “The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that its operatives attached to New Etete Division, Benin City, have successfully uncovered and apprehended suspects involved in a case of self-kidnapping, following diligent investigation and coordinated intelligence operations.
“On 27th October, 2025, one Paul Adaniken ‘m’, of No. 111 Limit Road, off Sapele Road, Benin City, reported at New Etete Police Division that at about 07:30hrs, he left his wife, Chioma Success Ezebie ‘f’, aged 27, and their three-year-old son, Andrea Ojiezelabor ‘m’, at home before proceeding to his shop.
“Later that day, at about midday, he received a phone call from an unknown number informing him that his wife and son had been kidnapped, with the abductors demanding a ransom of ₦5m for their release. “Upon receipt of the complaint, detectives from New Etete Division immediately commenced investigations, while the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit launched a full-scale cyber analysis and the intelligence-led operations that yielded a major breakthrough revealing startling details: the victim’s cousin, Osita Godfrey ‘m’, aged 33, who was earlier believed to be assisting with information, was arrested and found to be complicit in the crime. “His confessional statement led to the arrest of the supposed victim, Chioma Adaniken ‘f’, aged 27, who conspired with her accomplices to stage her own abduction in order to extort money from her husband. “Another suspect, Martins Chidozie ‘m’, aged 23, was also arrested in connection with the crime. All suspects have made useful confessional statements, ransom of N5 million recovered, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and onward prosecution.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, commended the officers of the New Etete Division for their swift and tactical response, which led to the unravelling of this deceitful act.
He warned residents to desist from acts capable of undermining public peace while emphasising that the command would continue to deploy intelligence and technology-driven strategies to combat crime in all forms. In recent times, the state command has arrested several criminals, ensuring that those who have cases to answer are charged to court after investigation. On March 28, 2025, an angry mob killed seven travellers in Uromi, Edo Central, over their suspected involvement in kidnapping. Guns were found in the truck taking them to the northern part of the country, which triggered the lynching of about 16 of them, with seven dying in the process.
This has not deterred the kidnapping of more citizens, as a retired headmaster identified as Mr Eliaser Olorunloju was recently kidnapped near a Fulani settlement between Sasaro and Ayetoro along the dilapidated Igarra- Uneme-Nekhua– Ibillo road in Akoko-Edo local government.
It was gathered last Monday that his abductors have reportedly contacted the family and demanded N70 million as ransom.

2027: We must remove Kano Governor at all cost — APC Chairman

The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, has declared that his party will do everything possible to ensure Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) does not return to office in the 2027 general election.

In a short video clip circulating on Facebook, Abbas was seen addressing APC supporters at a gathering of the party’s social media crew in Gwale local government area of the State, where he made the remarks.

“No matter the consequences, Abba will not return to the governor’s seat. Whether Kano stays in peace or falls into chaos, it doesn’t matter, Abba’s tenure must end in Kano,” Abbas said emphatically to the cheering crowd.

During his speech, the APC chairman also took a swipe at the NNPP-led administration in the State, accusing it of incompetence and corruption. According to him, Governor Yusuf’s team lacked the capacity to govern the state effectively.

“They thought governing is easy, but ever since assuming office, all we have seen is gross incompetence, negligence, and mad looting. Everyone is in a hurry to steal,” Abbas alleged.

He also described the ongoing Kano Emirate crisis in the state as “a disgrace,” saying the creation of two rival emirs was a blemish on the state’s history.

“This government has destroyed our emirate system. A historic city like Kano is now witnessing two emirs — this is a disgrace,” he said.

The State APC chairman Abbas, known for his fiery and bold statements, has remained one of the most vocal critics of the Governor Abba Yusuf administration since the NNPP took over power in 2023.

Tinubu moves to appoint new ambassadors amid US tension

President Bola Tinubu is set to conclude the appointment of ambassadors to Nigeria’s foreign missions worldwide after months of diplomatic gaps and growing pressure over the country’s absence of envoys abroad, as it was learnt.

Multiple Presidency officials familiar with the development told our correspondent that the President had ordered a “final cleanup” of the list of nominees ahead of its release.

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to comment publicly. “It is going to be concluded very soon,” one senior official said.

The official explained, “They are just cleaning it up now because since the time the President sent it to the Senate, some people on that list have died, and some have retired and are no longer eligible for appointment. Some of them have less than one year left in service.”

He added that the Senate had already screened the nominees, noting that the cleanup was to ensure that no one due for retirement remained on the list.

“The list of those screened has left the Senate long ago; it has been returned to the President,” the source said.

Another source confirmed that security and background clearances were completed months ago. However, a revision became necessary after several nominees passed away, took new appointments, or opted out due to ill health.

“The earlier list sent to the Senate is outdated. Some of the nominees have died, while others are no longer qualified,” the official said.

“The cleanup will ensure that the final list reflects those still available and eligible. The process can be completed in a week; it doesn’t take long to reverify new names.”

The development came more than two years after Tinubu’s September 2023 decision to recall all ambassadors from Nigeria’s 109 foreign missions — comprising 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates — as part of a “comprehensive diplomatic review.”

Since then, most missions have been headed by chargés d’affaires or senior consular officers with limited authority to represent Nigeria in formal negotiations.

“The truth is that most foreign governments do not give the same regard to chargés d’affaires as they do to ambassadors,” a senior Foreign Service source said.

“At a time like this, with many diplomatic demands, it is crucial that ambassadors be appointed.”

The push to conclude the ambassadorial appointments comes amid recent diplomatic tension following comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatened military intervention in Nigeria over alleged killings of Christians.

Trump, in a post on his social media platform on Friday, announced that he was labelling Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern.”

He later claimed to have instructed congressional Republicans to investigate the matter and report back to him.

On Saturday, Trump said he had ordered the U.S. Department of War to “prepare for possible action” in Nigeria over the alleged killings.

He wrote, “If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to wipe out the Islamic terrorists committing these atrocities.”

Another Presidency official argued that the crisis was not directly due to the absence of Nigerian ambassadors

“That’s not to say the lack of ambassadors caused the recent issues with the United States, but their presence could have made communication smoother,” the official noted. The official added that foreign partners prefer to engage at the ambassadorial level, “especially in moments of crisis or negotiation.”

Sources close to the President also revealed that the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is scheduled to meet Tinubu today (Tuesday) afternoon at the State House.

Although our correspondent could not immediately confirm the agenda, one official hinted that it could involve finalising the ambassadorial list.

“When the President is ready to make that appointment, it will be made public. The Presidency will release an official statement very soon,” another official said.

In April 2025, it was reported that the Federal Government had completed vetting and security clearances. However, the appointments stalled due to funding shortages.

Officials said over $1bn was needed to settle arrears of foreign service officers, replace aging diplomatic vehicles, renovate embassies, and cover operational overheads.

Tinubu had earlier admitted the complexity of balancing political and professional interests in the appointments.

“It’s not easy stitching those names,” Tinubu told members of The Buhari Organisation, led by former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, who visited him at the State House on September 2, 2025.

“I couldn’t appoint everybody at once. I still have some slots for ambassadorial positions that so many people are craving for,” he said.

Kanu gets Wednesday deadline to open defence in terrorism trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja, yesterday, gave the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, until November 5 to defend the terrorism charges filed against him or risk waiving his right to do so. The trial judge, Justice James Omotoso, advised Kanu to consult legal practitioners experienced in criminal law to assist with his defence or to formally appoint a lawyer to represent him in court. Justice Omotosho’s decision followed Kanu’s continued refusal to open his defence, insisting that there was no valid charge pending against him. Kanu, who represented himself during Tuesday’s proceedings, told the court that he would not return to detention unless the charges against him were properly presented. He argued that his continued detention by the Department of State Services was unlawful, maintaining that he had not breached any known law. He also accused the court of disregarding the Supreme Court’s judgment which, according to him, condemned his extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

He demanded that the trial judge immediately discharge him from custody.

When reminded that the Supreme Court had ordered a fresh trial, Kanu maintained his position that the terrorism charge was invalid and incompetent.

Citing Section 36(12) of the 1999 Constitution, he argued that there was no existing law creating a terrorism offence in Nigeria.

“In Nigeria today, the Constitution is the supreme law. There is no valid charge against me. I will not go back to detention today. The Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act has been repealed. I cannot defend myself under a repealed law,” Kanu said.

He further challenged any lawyer to show him a valid charge, urging the court to “take judicial notice” of what he claimed was the repeal of the terrorism law.

“I cannot be tried under a law that has been repealed. Prosecuting me under such a law is a violation of my fundamental rights,” he insisted.

After several attempts to persuade him to enter his defence, Justice Omotosho adjourned proceedings until November 5, 2025, giving Kanu the final opportunity to either defend the charge or forfeit his right to do so.

During the session, counsel for the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), informed the court that some documents served on him by Kanu were unsigned and not endorsed by the court, arguing that they held no evidential value.

He urged the court to disregard the documents, adopt his final address, and set a date for judgment. However, Justice Omotosho overruled him, stating that the documents contained in the court’s record were duly signed and bore evidence of payment.

China backs Nigeria, warns against foreign interference

China has urged the international community to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty following a US threat of military action.

The Chinese government reiterated its support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, commending the government for guiding the country along a development path tailored to its national conditions.

According to a report sourced from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, People’s Republic of China’s website, the Spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, stated this at a press briefing yesterday in Beijing.

She said, “As Nigeria’s strategic partner, China opposes any attempt by foreign powers to use religion or human rights as a pretext to meddle in another country’s internal affairs or impose sanctions and military threats.”

Recently, the US threatened Nigeria with possible military action due to the alleged persecution of Christians in the country.

It had reported that the United States President, Donald Trump, threatened to deploy military forces in Nigeria if the alleged genocide against Christians is not stopped in the country.

Tinubu nominates Kingsley Ude from Enugu to replace Nnaji as minister

President Bola Tinubu has requested the Senate to screen and confirm Kingsley Tochukwu Ude, SAN, from Enugu State, as a minister in his cabinet.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the letter on the floor of the Senate during plenary yesterday.

After the announcement, Akpabio referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further consideration and subsequent screening.

The development followed the resignation of former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, from Tinubu’s government.

Nnaji, who was the only minister from Enugu State in the Tinubu administration, resigned last month over controversy trailing his certificate said to be obtained from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Enugu State as well as the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, discharge certificate.

His resignation created a vacuum in President Tinubu’s government and left Enugu State without a minister.

You have been exposed, stop deceiving Nigerians – MASSOB hits Primate Ayodele

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has accused the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, of allegedly deceiving Nigerians under the guise of divine revelation.

In a statement issued by its National Director of Information, Comrade Edeson Samuel, the group said Primate Ayodele’s alleged “anti-Igbo and tribalized posture” has been exposed.

MASSOB claimed the cleric’s criticisms of Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party and his support for President Bola Tinubu were part of a sponsored campaign to discredit the former Anambra governor.

The statement accused Ayodele of ignoring the “hardship and insecurity” in the country while defending the Tinubu administration. It said:

“In your support bid for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, you have turned blind eyes to the huge evils his administration has caused Nigerians, including your kinsmen. You have also ignored the ongoing genocide against Christians in Nigeria.”

MASSOB expressed support for former US President Donald Trump’s recent stance against the Nigerian government, saying his intervention aims to expose “foreign and local-backed Fulani jihadists” responsible for attacks on Christians.

The group rejected Ayodele’s claim that Trump’s position was part of a plot to destabilize the Tinubu administration, insisting that the president was responsible for his government’s instability.

“Tinubu is the one destabilizing his administration by appointing his kinsmen to occupy almost all strategic positions and running the government like a family business,” MASSOB stated.

The pro-Biafra group further alleged that Tinubu’s presidency lacks legitimacy, claiming he “connived with INEC and the judiciary to steal the presidential mandate.”

MASSOB also dismissed Ayodele’s call for Tinubu to seek God’s face, saying such advice was “deceitful,” as, according to the group, “God did not install him as Nigeria’s president.”

It said Tinubu should instead seek forgiveness from former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

My daughter gave you $50,000 to support your election – Regina Daniels’ mum slams Ned Nwoko

Rita Daniels, the mother of actress Regina Daniels, has blasted her estranged son-in-law, Senator Ned Nwoko, as the feud between the couple took a dramatic turn.

In a video making the rounds, Rita Daniels lashed out at Nwoko, accusing him of tarnishing their family’s name despite their past support for him.

She alleged that Regina contributed $50,000 to his election campaign, while she herself also invested both money and effort into his political pursuits.

She said, “You wanted someone with a high star to boost your fallen star. If you think you can bite the finger that fed you, you’ll go down.”

“Regina gave you $50k to support your election. We are covering up your shame and making you feel like an Odogwu. You’re mad.”

Also, in a recent social media post, Regina claimed that her estranged husband ordered the arrest of her siblings as a means to force her to return to him and undergo rehabilitation.

She expressed frustration over the situation, questioning why things must turn so bitter when two people are no longer interested in being together.

The 24-year-old actress, who stated that she had chosen to remain silent despite being publicly labelled a drug addict, added that she now feels compelled to speak out, stressing that she could no longer hide her pain.

Tinubu orders end to ASUU strikes

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has given a firm directive to the Ministry of Education to ensure that university students remain in school, saying the Federal Government was doing everything humanly possible to prevent further strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday, the Minister said President Tinubu had mandated him to find lasting solutions to all issues that could disrupt academic activities in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

“As I told you, the President has mandated us that he doesn’t want ASUU to go on strike, and we’re doing everything humanly possible to ensure that our students stay in school,” Alausa said. “The last strike they went on for about six days was not really needed. We’re talking to them.”

He added that: “We’ve met literally all their requirements. Now we’ve gone back to the negotiation table. We’re talking—as I spoke to the leadership this morning. We will resolve this. And part of my visit today here is to also explain where we are with the ASUU strike to Mr. President and to extract more concession from Mr. President.”

On reports of a four-week ultimatum or overfocus on ASUU, the Minister dismissed such claims. “With all due respect to you, that’s not the case,” he said. “The problem in the past was that we had one negotiating committee dealing with universities (ASUU), another one with polytechnics (ASUP), and another with colleges of education (COEASU), and they weren’t talking to one another.

“What we’ve done now is to expand one single committee called the Alhaji Yayale Ahmed Federal Government Negotiating Committee with Tertiary Institutions. They’re dealing with both academic and non-academic unions.”

He added: “As I’m talking to you, they’re talking to the polytechnics, to the colleges of education, as well as ASUU—both academic and non-academic unions. And with all due respect, there is no ultimatum. I still spoke to the president of ASUP yesterday. I’m on first-line call to them. Everything is calm, and they all understand this is a listening government. We will resolve all their problems, resolve a significant part of their problems.”

The minister explained that the administration of President Tinubu remained fully committed to transparency, governance, and accountability in the education sector, adding that this commitment was reflected in the reforms being implemented at the Federal Ministry of Education.

“The government of President Bola Tinubu is about deepening the governance and transparency process in our country, and in the past 26 months, you’ve seen that played out,” Alausa said. “We’ve seen the light now; it’s not even at the end of the tunnel. I can continue to tell you what the President has done over and over in terms of the significant, massive progress that we’ve made.”

The Minister said his own drive at the Ministry was to deepen transparency and governance through evidence-based decision-making.

He stressed that data-driven planning now guides government interventions in education.

Drama, as Immigration, Natasha trade words over passport

The Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has claimed that she was briefly stopped from travelling abroad yesterday after immigration officials seized her international passport at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja.

In a Facebook live video obtained on Tuesday, the lawmaker was seen confronting immigration personnel over the action, which she described as an unlawful restriction of her movement and a violation of her fundamental rights.

She recalled a similar incident in the past where she was stopped from travelling abroad despite having no pending legal case or court order restricting her movement.

“Hello, fellow Nigerians. I’m Senator Natasha. Having completed my second year in office, I decided to take a week off. I’m at the airport here, and my passport has been withheld again.

“This same thing happened before when I was stopped from travelling even though I had committed no offence, and there was no court order restricting me.

“The officer in charge told me that Senate President Godswill Akpabio instructed to withhold my passport and prevent me from travelling because he claimed that each time I go abroad, I ‘spoil the image of the country’ by granting interviews to international media,” she lamented.

Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed frustration over what she described as repeated harassment and intimidation, urging authorities to intervene and end the “embarrassment.”

She later confirmed that the immigration officers eventually returned her passport, allowing her to continue her journey.

But in an interview with newsmen, the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, dismissed the insinuations, describing the episode as a “routine check.”

“It is a routine check, and she has been allowed to travel. It was an exercise that didn’t even take long,” Akinlabi explained.

When asked whether the directive emanated from the Senate President as alleged, the immigration spokesperson expressed surprise.

“Of course, not. What concerns immigration exercise with National Assembly matters?” he queried.

Efforts to get the reaction of Akpabio through his media aide, Eseme Eyiboh, were unsuccessful.

As of the time of filing this story, he neither picked up calls nor responded to the message sent for clarification.

The senator’s ordeal came months after her dramatic suspension on March 6, 2025, following a heated confrontation with the Senate leadership over the alleged reallocation of her seat during plenary.

She had accused Akpabio of running the Senate with a “dictatorial hand,” a charge he strongly denied.

Although her suspension lapsed in September, Akpoti-Uduaghan only regained access to her office two weeks ago after a prolonged standoff and legal tussle.

Since her return, she has resumed full participation in legislative business, including sponsoring amendments to the Criminal Code (Amendment) Bill 2025 last week.

Tuesday’s airport incident — now dismissed as a routine exercise by immigration authorities — briefly reignited public debate over her relationship with the Senate leadership, even as political observers continue to watch how her renewed engagement at the National Assembly unfolds.

FG targets 7m to empower with digital skills, vocational training

The Federal Government has announced plans to empower at least seven million youths with dual vocational training and digital skills development programmes.

Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, made this known during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the IHK Giessen-Friedberg Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Germany in Abuja yesterday.

In a statement by the Director (Information and Public Relations), Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Omolara Esan the Minister explained that the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to equipping young Nigerians with practical, industry-relevant skills that foster self-reliance, innovation, and employability.

He noted that the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA), is strengthening partnerships with German and Nigerian institutions to expand access to vocational and digital training opportunities, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for youth empowerment.

“Our goal is not just to produce job seekers but to nurture innovators and entrepreneurs who will contribute meaningfully to the nation’s economy,” the minister stated.

He emphasised the ministry’s readiness to deepen collaboration with institutions such as the Chambers Academy, the Nigerian Institute for Vocational Training and Corporate Development, and the German Chambers of Commerce, as well as relevant ministries and agencies, including those of Labour and Science, to broaden vocational and digital learning opportunities nationwide.

The Minister added that the ministry will soon launch a digital learning platform under the Nigerian Youth Academy, modelled after global platforms such as Coursera, to make skill acquisition easily accessible to young Nigerians across the country.

He described the ministry’s youth development strategy as a tripartite framework anchored on Support, Empowerment, and Protection, designed to ensure that every young Nigerian can thrive in a globally competitive environment.

“This collaboration is not just about programmes; it is about building the future of our young people. Together, we can ensure that Nigerian youth are empowered, innovative, and globally competitive,” the minister added.

Chief Executive Officer of the IHK Giessen-Friedberg Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Matthias Leder reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to supporting Nigerian youth through vocational training and legal migration initiatives.

He commended the Federal Government’s leadership in advancing youth skills development and highlighted the success of ongoing bilateral programmes between Nigeria and Germany.

Dr. Leder disclosed that 300 Nigerian youths have been selected for the Legal Labour Migration and Dual Vocational Training Project and will be honoured in Lagos on November 12, 2025, after completing their A1 German language level.

He praised the German dual training model, where apprentices earn from the first day, and called for stronger cooperation between Nigerian and German institutions to expand opportunities for young people and deepen bilateral relations.

North Central PDP warns against ‘political coup’, backs Damagum

The North Central Zonal Working and Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sounded the alarm over what it described as an unfolding ‘political coup’ within the party, warning that some desperate elements were plotting to hijack its leadership through unconstitutional means.

The zone reaffirmed its loyalty to the embattled National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, insisting that recent moves to remove him were illegal, reckless, and capable of plunging the PDP deeper into crisis.

The warning followed an emergency meeting of zonal leaders held in Abuja yesterday to review the growing tension triggered by the October 31 judgment of Justice Omotosho of the Federal High Court, a ruling that has reignited factional battles within the main opposition party.

Reading the communiqué from the meeting, Hon. Francis Orogu, Secretary of the PDP North Central Zone, said the zone stood firmly against what it called a deliberate attempt to subvert the party’s constitution and undermine its internal democracy.

The zonal committee condemned in strong terms the purported removal of Damagum by four members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and the alleged appointment of Hon. Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman, describing the development as ‘reckless, unconstitutional, and insulting.’

“We the members of the Peoples Democratic Party North Central Zone hereby distance and dissociate ourselves from the purported impeachment or removal of the National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum, by a mere four National Working Committee members and the so-called replacement of same with Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed,” the communiqué declared.

The group alleged that certain forces within the party were attempting to ‘force a leadership change through the backdoor,’ warning that such moves could expose the PDP to external interference and judicial manipulation.

“This negative act, if left unchecked, may in future provide an opportunity for judicial mischief by some corrupt judges as witnessed during the 2023 general elections,” it cautioned.

With concerns growing about the unity of the opposition, the North Central leaders urged the National Working Committee to act swiftly to restore discipline, rebuild trust, and reassure supporters that the forthcoming national convention will be transparent and credible.

“The NWC must be focused on rebuilding confidence and reassuring supporters of its commitment to a credible congress and new leadership,” the zonal leaders said.

In an appeal beyond party lines, the North Central PDP called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that security agencies are not drawn into political intrigues or used to intimidate opponents.

“Mr. President, please note that not all who praise a leader in power are well-wishers. Allow your destiny to drive your future, as always,” the zonal committee advised.

The group cautioned that both military and political coups pose serious threats to Nigeria’s fragile democracy and must be resisted with equal determination.

It also urged party members nationwide to remain calm, disciplined, and united, expressing optimism that the current turmoil would soon pass, but not before exposing those who, in its words, ‘seek to trade the soul of the PDP for personal ambition.’

Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Kenneth Okafor, lauds Uzodimma for Skill-Up digital training for Imo workers

Security agencies behind most attacks on journalists in Nigeria — MRA Report

Security forces and government officials are responsible for most of the attacks, harassment, and intimidation faced by journalists in Nigeria, according to a new report by Media Rights Agenda (MRA).

The 129-page report, titled “When Protectors Become Predators: The State against Freedom of Expression in Nigeria,” was released on Monday to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. It covers violations recorded between January 1 and October 31, 2025.

MRA reported that government actors are responsible for almost 74 percent of all recorded abuses against journalists during this time. The Nigeria Police Force, which represents 45 percent of the incidences involved, was the single-largest perpetrator of violations of media rights.

Other offenders mentioned in the report include the Department of State Services (DSS); the military; paramilitary agencies; and elected officials at the federal and state level.

MRA reported at least 69 incidents involving journalists carrying out their work that included arbitrary arrests, unlawful detentions, physical assaults, threats to life, raids on journalists’ offices, kidnappings, and other intimidation tactics.

“The report shows that journalists in Nigeria are increasingly under siege, not just from criminals and insurgents, but from the very state institutions meant to protect them,” said Ayode Longe, MRA’s Deputy Executive Director.

He described the trend as “a direct assault on democracy and the rule of law,” warning that it contradicts Nigeria’s constitutional and international commitments to protect press freedom and the public’s right to information.

Additionally the report stated, that the lack of investigation or prosecution of offenders has created an unspoken policy of impunity, broken trust in the institutions of governance, and led to self-censorship amongst journalists. MRA reminded the authorities that the protection of journalists is guaranteed under the Nigerian Constitution, Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The organization urged the Federal government to hold violators accountable, reform security and law enforcement agencies, and to cease the misuse of laws such as the Cybercrime Act to attack the press.

It also urged the National Assembly to pass a law that criminalises attacks on journalists and asked the National Judicial Council (NJC) to curb the abuse of court processes used to intimidate media professionals.

Resident doctors insist on total settlement before resumption

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced that its members will not resume duties until all their 19 demands are completely met by the Federal Government without any delay.

NARD President, Dr Muhammad Suleiman, told Journalist in Abuja yesterday that none of the issues responsible for the ongoing nationwide strike had received serious or adequate attention.

The reports said that resident doctors embarked on a total, indefinite, and comprehensive strike on Nov. 1, following the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum earlier issued to the Federal Government to meet their long-standing welfare demands.

Suleiman was reacting to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, issued by Mr Alaba Balogun, announcing plans to release N11.9 billion for arrears and other doctors’ welfare packages.

According to the ministry, working with the Federal Ministry of Finance, N21.3 billion was transferred to the IPPIS account for health workers, while N11.9 billion and N10.6 billion were also allocated for payments.

The ministry further explained that the government was addressing workforce shortages by employing more healthcare professionals and engaging with unions, including NARD, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU).

However, Suleiman said the association was unaware of any N11.9 billion release, adding that the entire health sector, not only resident doctors, was receiving 25/35 per cent arrears payments.

He added that based on the ministry’s progress report, “one or two out of 19 is a very poor performance score,” insisting resident doctors would remain on strike until every demand was fulfilled.

Strike: Resident doctors accuse Federal govt of misinformation

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has dismissed the Federal Government’s recent claims of progress on doctors’ welfare and health sector reforms, describing them as “fiction rather than fact.”

In a statement jointly signed by NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman; Secretary-General, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Abdulmajid Ibrahim, yesterday, the association said the reality on the ground “stands in stark contrast” to the optimistic tone of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s press release of October 31, 2025.

According to the statement, NARD accused the ministry of misrepresenting the true state of doctors’ welfare and industrial conditions, urging President Bola Tinubu to seek the facts “before fiction” in assessing the crisis that has grounded public hospitals across the country.

The association reiterated its 19-point demand, which it said represented the minimum requirements for sustaining the county’s healthcare system and restoring dignity to medical practice.

Among the key issues raised by the association were unpaid arrears, allowances, and entitlements, including the 25/35 per cent CONMESS review, promotion arrears, upgrade arrears, accoutrement allowance, and other benefits, which have remained unsettled for over five years.

ARD also faulted the government’s claim that ₦30billion had been released to offset arrears, saying most resident doctors were yet to receive full payments.

On promotion and upgrade delays, the group lamented that many doctors waited over five years to be paid despite approved promotions, while those who passed postgraduate exams faced “severe bottlenecks” in being upgraded.

NARD condemned the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), calling it “a tool of frustration” responsible for recurring salary shortfalls of up to ₦100,000 in recent months. It urged the creation of a specialised health-sector payroll platform that ensures timely and accurate payments.

It also challenged the ministry’s claim of recruiting 20,000 health workers in 2024 and planning another 15,000 in 2025, demanding that verifiable data be made public. According to NARD, Nigeria’s pool of resident doctors has dropped from 16,000 to about 9,000 in a decade due to poor welfare and unsafe working conditions.

The association acknowledged the release of ₦10.6billion for the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) but stressed that the disbursement should be regular, transparent, and adjusted for inflation.

It also condemned the partial reinstatement of dismissed doctors at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, insisting that all five affected doctors be reinstated “immediately and unconditionally.”

Other concerns by the doctors included; denial of the Specialist Allowance to resident doctors, inpaid salary arrears at Benue State University Teaching Hospital (18 months), FMC Owo (4–8 months), and OAUTHC Ile-Ife (7–14 months), Non-implementation of the one-for-one replacement policy, casualisation of doctors in many hospitalsl, downgrading of doctors’ entry level from CONMESS 3/3 to 2/2, and unregulated long working hours without compensation.

NARD also demanded urgent pension reforms to secure post-service welfare and recognition of doctors’ occupational hazards.

The resident doctors emphasised that their ongoing indefinite strike is not aimed at punishing Nigerians but at saving the healthcare system from collapse.

“Our struggle transcends money; it is about dignity, safety, and survival. A functional health system cannot be built on neglect, broken promises, and overwork, ” the statement read.

NARD reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue but warned that “industrial peace cannot be achieved through press statements but through justice, sincerity, and respect for agreements.”

The association urged the government to take verifiable actions before the 2026 budget approval to address its long-standing grievances and restore normalcy to Nigeria’s public health institutions.

There was tension at the secretariat when a group of staff members, reportedly aided by external forces, attempted to forcibly evict Senator Anyanwu from his office on the third floor.

It was gathered the group tried to break into the National Secretary’s office but met stiff resistance from policemen stationed at the secretariat, who fired tear gas and used minimal force to disperse them.

To prevent a total breakdown of law and order, security operatives subsequently ordered all staff, journalists and visitors to vacate the premises before locking the main entrance.

There were speculations the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, who was suspended by the Anyanwu-faction was meeting with members of his National Working Committee (NWC).

But as of the time of this report, there was no information about the outcome of the meeting.

The crisis rocking the party peaked with the suspension of Senator Anyanwu by the Damagun-led NWC and a counter suspension of Damagun and others by the Anyanwu-led group.

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday ordered the suspension of the elective national Convention of the party.

Accompanied by supporters, Mohammed arrived at the Wadata national secretariat of the party around 11 am and proceeded to the office of the National Chairman, where he addressed journalists after being received by Anyanwu, declaring his mission was to restore unity within the opposition party and reposition it ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He was later taken round the secretariat by the embattled National Secretary before settling into the chairman’s office.

Addressing journalists, Mohammed said: “Today is another good day for the PDP family across Nigeria. You can see that everyone is happy to have a new leadership in the PDP. I am here as the Acting National Chairman of our great party, and by the grace of God, under my leadership, I will do everything possible to bring everyone together under one umbrella.

“PDP is beyond one individual. We will work as a team to ensure a smooth process that will lead to a successful outing in 2027 and pledged to engage stakeholders across the country to heal divisions within the party and restore the confidence of its members and supporters.

He said “We will liaise with everyone, hear from them, and receive their guidance to make PDP one united family again. By the grace of God, we will sustain our slogan — power to the people — because power belongs to the people. We are confident that we will reclaim power in 2027″

While responding to questions on how the party plans to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the midst of internal crises and pending congresses, Mohammed said his faction will be guided by the party’s constitution.

He said: “We are assuring Nigerians that by 2027, power will return to the PDP. We are currently reviewing our constitution to ensure that all organs of the party function effectively. We will normalize structures across the 36 states and the FCT to guarantee a smooth internal process.”

United States Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has said the Department of War is preparing for action in Nigeria following reports of attacks on Christians in the country.

Hegseth stated this on Saturday in a post on X, in response to President Donald Trump’s earlier comments threatening military intervention over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Chad shuts border with Nigeria over US threats

The Chad Government has announced an immediate closure of its border with Nigeria on heightened security concerns fueled by rumors of purported U.S. forces’ movement in parts of West Africa.

Military sources in N’Djamena confirmed yesterday that President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno ordered a military lockdown on the Nigerian border after intelligence indicated that terrorist actors from Northern Nigeria were planning to cross into Chad.

According to Zagazola Makama, Chadian troops and armoured vehicles have been deployed to critical routes from Nigeria, and all units are now at full readiness.President Déby reportedly warned that “no armed group or foreign force will be allowed to enter Chadian soil under any disguise.”

The border closure came amid growing regional tension and speculation over America’s alleged military activities in the Sahel and West Africa.

Security experts said Chad’s action is a precautionary step aimed at protecting its borders and preventing infiltration by militants who may seek to exploit the current instability in the region.

EFCC suspends operatives over alleged ₦10m extortion of rapper, Oladips

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has suspended several of its operatives following allegations that they extorted ₦10 million from Nigerian rapper Oladipupo Oladimeji, popularly known as Oladips.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that the commission had begun a full investigation into the case, describing the allegation as “serious and deserving of immediate attention.”

The rapper had earlier accused EFCC officials of detaining him for five days and forcing him to pay ₦10 million before securing his release, despite having no evidence of wrongdoing against him.

According to Oyewale, the EFCC leadership swiftly reacted to the claims and ordered all operatives linked to the incident to step down from their duties pending the outcome of investigations.

He explained that the affected officers had been summoned to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja for questioning over the alleged extortion.

“The commission wishes to state unreservedly that the grim picture painted by the artist does not reflect the true image of the EFCC,” Oyewale said.

“We have seen his claims and have commenced investigations accordingly. The officers involved have been relieved of their operational duties while investigations continue.”

He assured Nigerians that the EFCC remains committed to transparency and discipline, noting that any officer found guilty of misconduct would face severe sanctions.

“The EFCC upholds integrity as its core value and will not hesitate to punish any staff found culpable,” Oyewale added.

“However, if the allegation is discovered to be false and intended to damage the image of the commission, the necessary legal steps will also be taken.”

Oyewale urged the public to allow due process to prevail while reaffirming that the EFCC remains focused on its mandate to fight corruption and financial crimes without fear or favour.

Anambra Guber: INEC confirms 2,802,790 voters, reaffirms stand against vote-buying

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC yesterday said it has approved a final register of 2,802,790 eligible voters for the November 8, governorship election in Anambra.

Prof. Joash Amupitan, the INEC Chairman, said this during the signing of the Peace Accord for the Governorship Off-Cycle Election by the National Peace Committee (NPC) in Awka.

Amupitan also said that the commission had finalised deployment plans for 24,000 personnel and election materials across 5,718 polling units, 326 ward collation centres, and the 21 local government and state collation centres in Awka.

He reaffirmed the commission’s resolve to combat vote-buying during the election.

According to him, any individual or group attempting to subvert the will of the people would be firmly dealt with in accordance with the law.

“The Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) has instituted robust security measures for this election.

“The Nigeria Police Force will deploy 45,000 personnel, while the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps is deploying 10,250 officers, alongside other agencies.

“Voters should therefore, expect a significant improvement in Election Day logistics. Enhanced result management processes will also be evident,” he said.

While reaffirming the commission’s readiness to fulfill its mandate, Amupitan urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to uphold the principles of the peace accord.

“As the election management body, I want to reassure all political parties and candidates that INEC remains fully committed to discharging its duties in line with the law, global best practices and the very principles enshrined in the Peace Accord.

“However, let me emphasise that it is not the signatures on this document that guarantee peace; it is the genuine commitment to honouring its provisions.

“Without peace, logistics will be disrupted, our personnel and materials will be at risk and ultimately, the credibility of the process will be undermined.

“Therefore, as you append your signatures today, please ensure the message cascades to your supporters at all levels. This is the surest way to honour the sacrifice and labour of the NPC in advancing peaceful elections,” he said.

Tinubu orders immediate resolution of doctors’ strike

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to ensure that members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors who are on strike resume work immediately.

The directive was disclosed by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, during a press briefing yesrterday in Abuja, following the total and indefinite strike declared by NARD on Saturday.

Speaking at the briefing, Salako said, “I would like to update Nigerians on the challenges around the ongoing strike action by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors. First, on behalf of myself and the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, and all the top management staff of the ministry, we would like to express our regrets and unconditional apology to Nigerians, especially those who needed to access health care in the last 48 hours, who could not do it as a result of the strike action by NARD.

“I want to use this opportunity to assure Nigerians that Mr President has expressly directed that we do everything possible and legitimate to ensure that the resident doctors are brought back to their duty posts as soon as possible.”

The minister explained that the government had been engaging the leadership of NARD to resolve the issues behind their industrial action.

Salako revealed that the striking doctors had presented 19 separate demands, which the ministry was addressing one after another.

He provided background on the dispute, recalling that a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) in July had caused division among health sector workers.

According to him, some groups in the health sector protested against the contents of the circular, while others welcomed it.

The ministry, he said, sought a review because it did not accommodate the interests of all health professionals.

“We approached the National Salaries and Wages Commission and the Presidential Committee on Salary Increase, and the circular was therefore withdrawn,” Salako stated.

He noted that a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) process was initiated in August to unify discussions across all health sector unions, including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU).

“Between August and now, we have had 12 meetings of the CBA. But in the course of that CBA meeting, two issues came out that were very controversial,” he said.

According to the minister, one of the disputes was between groups advocating relativity in remuneration and others insisting on parity, both of which he described as mutually exclusive.

“You cannot talk about parity in one breath as government, and also talk about relativity in another breath as government. They are mutually exclusive. And we felt that it was important to come back home to resolve that issue,” he stated.

The second contentious issue, he said, was the appointment of some non-doctor health workers as consultants in 2020, which caused discontent among doctors.

“For us, we felt that it was an issue that we had to come and discuss in-house to resolve, and that is what led to a temporary suspension of the CBA.

“The ministry engaged an external consultant, a professor of industrial relations, to serve as a negotiator on these two critical issues and other matters that may arise during discussions with the health unions.

Police declare Sowore wanted over alleged plot to disrupt peace in Lagos

The Police command in Lagos State has declared activist, Mr Omoyele Sowore, wanted for allegedly planning to incite public disorder and obstruct major roads in the state.

Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed this to journalists yesterday at the Iyana-Oworo section of the Third Mainland Bridge.

He said the command was closing in on Sowore and others accused of coordinating activities intended to disrupt public peace.

“Sowore should surrender at the nearest police station or face arrest wherever he is found.

“Anyone attempting to cause disturbance or block our roads will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

According to him, intelligence reports indicated that Sowore and his associates planned to stage demonstrations at strategic locations, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki Tollgate, and Freedom Park.

The commissioner described the alleged plan as criminal and warned it could trigger severe traffic congestion and endanger lives.

“It is only someone who needs examination that would attempt to block such a vital route used by thousands daily,” he said.

He revealed that 13 suspects had been arrested in connection with the planned protest, while Sowore allegedly fled. Investigations are ongoing to identify sponsors and collaborators.

Jimoh said officers had been deployed across key areas, especially major bridges and highways, where roadblocks and diversions were in place.

He noted that the measures were temporary and aimed at safeguarding peace and protecting critical infrastructure.

“The Third Mainland Bridge was not designed to hold stationary weight. Any gathering on it could pose structural risks,” he said.

The commissioner also addressed tension linked to recent demolitions in parts of Lagos, particularly in the Oworo-Soki area, stating that eligible residents had already received compensation.

“The government compensated those affected, and the media witnessed it. There is no justification to provoke crisis under the guise of protest,” he said.

He urged Lagos residents to continue their normal activities without fear, assuring that security agencies were fully deployed to maintain order.

“We are not sleeping. We will apprehend, investigate, and prosecute anyone attempting to undermine public safety in Lagos,” he said.

Jimoh reaffirmed the command’s commitment to enforcing the law without fear or favour, stressing that freedom of expression must not turn into public nuisance or risk lives.

Protest rocks PDP national secretariat as Wike-led faction takes over

A protest erupted yesterday at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party, Wadata Plaza in Abuja, as supporters of the factional acting National Chairman of the party, Mohammed Abdulrahman, stormed the premises.

The group, chanting solidarity songs, demanded that the National Working Committee, led by Umar Damagum, vacate the headquarters immediately.

It had reported that Abdulrahman was named the acting national chairman of the party last week as the leadership crisis threatening the soul of the party worsened with the suspension of the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, for a period of one month.

In a dramatic twist, the faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, had converged at a separate venue in Abuja and announced the suspension of the Damagum-led NWC.

The protesters, who accused the Damagum-led leadership of mismanaging party affairs, vowed to reclaim control of the secretariat for the Abdulrahman-led faction.

Security operatives have been deployed to the area to prevent a breakdown of law and order as both factions struggle for control of the party’s edifice.

However, the faction of the party’s NWC led by Abdulrahman has taken control of the party’s National Chairman’s office.

Speaking to journalists at the office, Abdulrahman promised to unite and reposition the party in preparation for the next general election.

He also assured members of his commitment to work diligently for the party’s progress.

“We are ready to work in the interest of our dear party,” he said.

Trump must get approval from Tinubu before US military action – Presidency

The Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Bola Tinubu, Daniel Bwala, has claimed it would be diplomatically unacceptable for the United States to carry out any military operation in Nigeria without consent.

Bwala stated this in an interview with BBC World Service yesterday.

He insisted that Nigeria is a sovereign nation and that any form of foreign intervention in its internal security issues must be collaborative and respectful of its territorial integrity.

Bwala’s comments came after US President Donald Trump designated Nigeria a “country of particular concern” over the alleged persecution of Christians.

Trump also threatened to deploy America’s “Department of War” against terrorist groups he claimed were targeting Christians in Nigeria.

“If it’s a joint operation with Nigeria, that’s acceptable,” Bwala said.

“But diplomatically, it is wrong to invade a sovereign nation without collaboration—especially one that remains a strategic partner in the fight against insecurity.

“Unilateral intervention only happens when there is evidence that a government is complicit in a crisis. That is certainly not the case in Nigeria,” he said.

Senate hails Tinubu over Nigeria’s exit from FATF grey list

The Senate Yesterday lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, and other key institutions for their roles in securing Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force Grey List, described as a major victory for the nation’s financial integrity and global reputation.

The motion was sponsored by Senator Emmanuel Udende under matters of urgent public importance pursuant to Orders 41 and 51 of the Senate Standing Orders, 2023 (as amended).

Moving the motion, Udende said Nigeria’s delisting by FATF reflects the country’s remarkable progress in addressing strategic deficiencies in its Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) framework and demonstrates its strong commitment to global financial integrity standards.

He recalled that Nigeria’s previous inclusion on the FATF Grey List had subjected the country to “heightened international monitoring, scrutiny, and reputational risks, which adversely affected investor confidence and limited access to global financial markets.”

The senator credited the development to “the successful implementation of extensive reforms and policy measures by the Executive Arm of Government, the National Assembly, and several regulatory and enforcement agencies.”

In its resolution, the Senate recognised “the invaluable leadership and contributions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of the Senate, the NFIU, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and other relevant stakeholders whose coordinated actions culminated in this significant national achievement.”

Lawmakers expressed delight that the delisting has boosted investor confidence and reassured the international community of Nigeria’s renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, and global financial standards.

“The delisting has boosted investor confidence and reassured the international community of Nigeria’s renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, and global financial standards.

“Nigeria’s financial and regulatory systems have regained international credibility and compliance with FATF recommendations, enhancing the country’s reputation as a safe and attractive destination for foreign investment,” the motion noted.

The Senate further observed that Nigerian financial institutions previously burdened by “additional scrutiny, high compliance costs, and delayed transactions” now enjoy smoother, faster, and more cost-efficient cross-border operations, improving trade facilitation and remittance inflows.

The motion also highlighted the long-term benefits of Nigeria’s delisting, including “transformative impacts on the economy through sustained foreign direct investment across key sectors such as energy, technology, agriculture, and manufacturing,” as well as a stronger naira, greater regulatory stability, and job creation.

Adopting the motion, the Senate resolved to commend the President and urged relevant financial and enforcement agencies to consolidate the gains by maintaining continuous compliance with international standards to prevent relapse.

The lawmakers also mandated the Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes to sustain legislative oversight and policy reviews to further strengthen Nigeria’s financial governance.

Nigeria was first placed on the FATF Grey List in 2021 following concerns about weaknesses in its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing regime.

The country’s removal from the FATF Grey List was officially announced at the FATF October 2025 Plenary in Paris, France.

The decision followed the country’s successful implementation of a 19-point action plan aimed at strengthening its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing framework.

The global watchdog for financial crimes had in February 2023 placed Nigeria on its grey list after identifying strategic deficiencies in its AML/CFT systems.

Reps raise alarm over terrorists’ threat to bomb N’Assembly complex

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security, Garba Muhammad, Yesterday disclosed that the National Assembly has received threats from terrorists to bomb the complex and called for urgent fortification of the edifice as a proactive measure.

Garba disclosed this in Abuja at a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Legislative Security Directorate, which seeks to enhance security management, protect the lawmakers, staff members and visitors to the nation’s parliament.

The edifice housing the Senate, the House of Representatives and sundry offices, he said, has been facing security challenges, including cases of car and motorcycle theft, vandalism, fake identity cards, and infiltration by unregistered visitors.

It would be recalled that a similar incident happened on May 4, 2021, a security alert warned lawmakers of a planned Boko Haram attack on the National Assembly complex and other VIP/government locations in Abuja. In response, security measures were intensified, including strict vehicle checks that caused significant congestion at the gates. Lawmakers were advised to use the less-congested presidential gate for safer access. The alert underscored concerns over Boko Haram’s growing threat, with insurgents reportedly operating as close as Niger State, near the Federal Capital Territory.

Following the alert, the National Assembly limited members’ presence on the premises for safety, and security experts called for stronger federal protection of national infrastructure and assets.

Garba said, “We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly.

“Legislators are exposed to threats from constituents and others who gain easy access to their offices without any formal appointment.

“It is obvious that with the ongoing security challenges, if proper measures are not taken, it will truncate the legislative activities in the National Assembly. If activities are thwarted, there will be no representation, no oversight, no annual budget, no plenary at all — and that will destabilise legislative procedure, democracy, and the stability of the system, and our nation at large.

The Kano lawmaker noted that robust security management requires a holistic and coordinated approach, integrating multi-layered approaches to secure the National Assembly environment to enable lawmakers to discharge their duties in an atmosphere of peace. “That is why this bill is important. It seeks to address all the challenges as aforesaid and adopt the world’s best practices of parliamentary security procedures and architecture.

“The need for effective security measures in the National Assembly cannot be overemphasised because parliament has to remain accessible to the public. However, this bill is committed to ensuring the best security architecture in the National Assembly — to protect legislators, staff, visitors, and property,” he said.

He urged State Houses of Assembly to take urgent steps to protect their complexes nationwide.

He called for support among stakeholders to ensure the quick passage of the bill, describing it as a major step toward securing Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

“I wish us a peaceful and fruitful hearing that will ultimately bring a turnaround in the National Assembly’s security architecture,” he said.

Natasha approaches Federal High Court, seeks dismissal of federal charges

The Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has approached the Federal High Court, Abuja, seeking the dismissal of the six-count charges filed against her by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

She described the charges filed against her by federal authorities as an abuse of prosecutorial power, a violation of due process, and an attempt to shield the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, from public scrutiny.

In a motion filed through her legal team, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan urged the court to dismiss the charges leveled against her on the grounds that they were not in the public interest, but rather to protect the private and political interests of the Senate President and Bello, the Ex- Kogi State Governor.

Her legal team argued that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) acted contrary to the constitutional principles guiding the exercise of prosecutorial powers under Section 174(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

According to her, the said provision mandates the AGF to act only in “public interest, the interest of justice, and to prevent abuse of legal process.” However, she maintained that the prosecution against her “serves no public purpose” and amounts to “a gross abuse of legal authority.”

In an affidavit supporting her claim, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan stated that the six-count charge, initiated on May 22, 2025, was filed in bad faith, stressing that the alleged defamatory statements cited in the charge, were directed at Senator Akpabio and Yahaya Bello in their personal capacities.

The lawmaker equally attached several Newspapers publications to buttress her point describing them as “public records that reveal the true nature of the person of the Senate President.”

She further argued that the petitions and circumstances leading to her prosecution stemmed from personal and political rivalry, offering “no benefit to the Nigerian public.”

Senator Akpoti- Uduaghan further argued that the case represents a misuse of public resources to settle personal scores and shield individuals with questionable reputations from criticism.

PDP crisis deepens as Lamido threatens legal action after being denied chairmanship form

Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has threatened to take legal action against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, after he was allegedly denied the opportunity to purchase the nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman.

Lamido, who arrived at the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, yesterday morning, was reportedly prevented from obtaining the form, a development he described as “unacceptable and undemocratic.”

Speaking to journalists outside the party headquarters, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed disappointment over the incident and vowed to seek redress in court if he was not allowed to participate in the forthcoming National Convention slated for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“I came here to buy the form for the chairmanship position, but I was denied. This is not the democracy our party stands for,” Lamido said. “If this continues, I will have no choice but to approach the court for justice.”

Lamido had earlier declared his intention to contest the position in a post on his verified Facebook page, announcing that he would visit Wadata Plaza on Monday morning to obtain the nomination form.

His move cames amid growing tension within the PDP ahead of the national convention, where new members of the National Working Committee, NWC, are expected to emerge.
