Finally, Kanu declines to enter defence, insists no case against him

The detained self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has shelved his earlier plan to call witnesses in his defence in his ongoing trial for alleged terrorism offences.

The court had on October 24 adjourned till October 27 for Kanu to open his defence.

The IPOB leader had written the court, indicating his intention to call witnesses and applied for witness summons. He also begged the court for time to study his case-file.

When the case was called Yesterday, Kanu said he has gone through the case-file and has realised that there is no valid charge against him.

He argued that since he is convinced that there is no valid charge against him and that he was subjected to unlawful trial, there would be no need for him to open any defence.

Justice James Omotosho asked him to file a written address to that effect and serve the prosecution.

The judge advised him to consult experts in criminal law on the consequences of the option he has chosen.

The judge thereafter adjourned till the 4th, 5th & 6th November for the adoption of the final written addresses based on the defendant’s position that evidence led so far and the charge have not established any case against him, or for the defendant to enter his defence.

‘I’m under serious pressure to join APC’ – Plateau Gov, Mutfwang

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has said he is seriously being pressured by political figures to dump the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Mutfwang made this disclosure during the weekend at an event held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Jos.

The governor noted his decision to remain in the PDP, stressing that only God and the electorate who voted him into office can determine his political direction.

“It is true that they have been putting pressure on me.

“But I told them that only two people can authorise me to change my party — one is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people,” he said.

This is coming a few weeks after APC leaders in Plateau moved to block Mutfwang from joining the party.

The APC leaders, at a recent stakeholders’ meeting in Jos, unanimously endorsed a motion seeking to stop Mutfwang from defecting to the party.

The motion was reportedly moved by Festus Fuanter, former Deputy National Secretary of the APC.

“We don’t want anybody coming to our party. You do your thing, and we’ll do ours,” Fuanter said at the meeting.

He added that the party was confident of its strength ahead of the 2027 general elections and did not need external reinforcement.

Reacting to the development, Mutfwang had said those rejecting his rumoured defection were acting out of fear.

Father arrested for defiling two daughters in Enugu

The Enugu State Government has confirmed the arrest of one Ozioma Okonkwo for allegedly defiling his two biological daughters, aged two and five.

Okonkwo, who is a native of Imo State residing in Enugu, was arrested on the night of Saturday, October 25, 2025, after a concerned citizen alerted authorities about the disturbing incident.

This was contained in a statement issued by the state Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development on Sunday.

According to the statement, the suspect is in police custody and will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.

The ministry also revealed that the two children have been admitted into a government-approved shelter, where they are receiving medical care and psychosocial support.

Their mother, described as deeply traumatised, will also undergo therapy under the supervision of the ministry’s social welfare and counselling team.

“The Enugu State Government commends the Nigeria Police Force for their swift and professional response, which led to the prompt arrest of the suspect,” the statement read.

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy on sexual and gender-based violence, the ministry warned that all offenders would face the full weight of the law.

The ministry also condemned the act, calling it “a heart-wrenching and unacceptable crime against innocence.”

The statement reads, “The Enugu State Government under the leadership of Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, remains unwavering in its commitment to protect every child and ensure that perpetrators of such evil acts are brought to justice.

“No child should ever have to endure such trauma, especially from those meant to provide care and protection.”

The government also thanked citizens for their vigilance and cooperation, urging continued support in efforts to safeguard the rights and dignity of women and children across the state.

In 2022, a father, Michake Ogbar, was sentenced to triple life imprisonment for defiling and raping his three daughters of age 10, 20, and 24 years.

Ogbar faced three counts bordering on defilement and rape, offences which violate Sections 137 and 258(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Lagos boxer kills carpenter during dispute over burst football in Ikorodu

A professional boxer, popularly known as Bintin, has allegedly punched a local carpenter, identified simply as Yellow, to death during an altercation over a burst football in the Adamo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation began after Yellow, known in the neighbourhood for his fair complexion, accidentally punctured a football belonging to the boxer’s young son.

The boy’s mother reportedly called her husband, who was away from home at the time, to inform him about the incident.

Upon returning, Bintin allegedly confronted the carpenter in anger, accusing him of deliberately damaging his child’s ball.

The heated exchange soon turned physical until the community head, known as the Baale, intervened and ordered Yellow to replace the damaged football.

Witnesses said that Yellow complied and left to purchase a new ball. However, the boxer, still enraged, pursued him and struck him with a heavy punch on the forehead.

The carpenter collapsed on the spot and was rushed to the Agbowa General Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.

A resident who spoke on condition of anonymity described the boxer as a troublesome figure known for his aggressive behaviour.

“He has always been arrogant and quick to fight. Everyone in the area knows his temper,” the resident said.

Following the incident, Bintin reportedly surrendered himself at the Imota Police Station, where he was taken into custody.

Confirming the development, the Baale of the community stated that the deceased would be buried later in the day according to Islamic rites, adding that normalcy had since returned to the area.

There were initial rumours suggesting that the suspect might have been released, but police authorities dismissed the claims.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident, assuring that the suspect remains in custody.

“Divisional Police Officers do not have the authority to release a murder suspect. I have spoken with the Divisional Head, and the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, for further investigation,” she said.

Eze Obi Ejeshi warns against ‘Supreme Council of Oha’

…Inaugurates Oha-in-Council of Emekuku

The Traditional Ruler of Emekuku Ancient Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Eze Obi Ejeshi, (Ezeukwu IV of Emekuku), has formally inaugurated the highly respected Oha-in-Council of Emekuku Autonomous Community, marking the completion of his cabinet’s full configuration.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Eze Obi Ejeshi charged the newly inducted members to uphold integrity, discipline, and fairness in the discharge of their duties. The revered monarch expressed satisfaction at the successful inauguration, reminding the council  members that their positions are a call to service, not an avenue for oppression or abuse of authority within the community.

Reacting to the on-going rumours about the existence of a “Supreme Council of Oha” in Emekuku, the royal father dismissed such claims as false and illegal. He clarified that no such body exists under the law governing traditional institutions in Imo State.

Quoting from the Imo State of Nigeria traditional rulers, Autonomous Communities and Related Matters Law No. 16 of 2016—which repealed the 2006 Law No. 6, the monarch explained that the law clearly recognizes the traditional ruler as the custodian of the people’s culture and traditions, and the final authority within an autonomous community, working in council with his officially constituted cabinet.

“There is no such body as a Supreme Council of Oha anywhere in Emekuku,” EzeEjeshi declared. “The law is explicit that the Traditional Ruler, in concert with his cabinet, remains the sole governing traditional authority. Any parallel body or self-styled group claiming such powers is acting outside the law.”

The Eze further warned individuals parading themselves as members of Supreme Council of Oha to desist immediately, or face the full weight of the law. He explained that with the inauguration of the Oha-in-Council, the circle of his traditional cabinet is now complete, paving the way for a more structured and unified governance of the community.

The Traditional Ruler also expressed profound appreciation to the Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator (Dr.) Hope Uzodimma, for his continued support to traditional institutions across the state. He commended the governor for fostering unity, dignity, and responsible leadership among Traditional Rulers.

The newly inaugurated members of the Oha-in-Council of Emekuku were also charged to work collaboratively for the peace, progress, and development of the community. Members of Oha-in-Council who were inaugurated were, Oha Damian Onyegbule, OhaOkechukwuChikwere, OhaNnamdiEjemmanu, and Oha Godwin Chukwu.

Ogbenna emerges Imo ADC caretaker chairman

…As Apex Leader, Uba urges committee to work for party’s interest,

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Imo State Chapter, on Saturday October 18, inaugurated the Comr. Ogbenna Vitalis Chima-led Caretaker Committee, to pilot the affairs of the party in the state.

The inauguration was held at Uzii Mission, Mbaise Road, Owerri, with the venue filled to capacity.

Speaking during the inauguration, the Imo ADC Apex Leader, Comr Chinonso Uba (Nonso Nkwa) charged the newly inaugurated Caretaker Committee to work for the party’s interest diligently and selflessly.

The highly respected radio broadcaster, further charged the new leaders to ensure that the party’s vision, rules and regulations were upheld in all their exercises, and avoid any act capable of  derailing the integrity of the party. Nonso Nkwa also admonished  them to uphold the ADC terms of reference (T.O.R) for harmonization.

He went on to enjoin them to deliver ADC mandate entrusted into their hands without fear or favour.

Also speaking, the new caretaker chairman, Comr Ogbenna who is also known as Aluta Prince, said he was happy to be inaugurated as the Caretaker Committee Chairman, and vowed to bring back the party’s lost glory, as well as take the party to enviable height, bring peace and unity to the party as well carry everybody along.

There was jubilation, and praises for Nonso Nkwa for stepping up at the right time, to correct the anomalies allegedly ochestrated by the Okoroma led Rebuild ADC. Ochi War as he is also called, was also commended for not compromising his integrity for a morsel of bread, not just for the sake of the party, but also for the benefits of Imolites in general.

Meanwhile, the Imo ADC has distanced itself from any coalition with the rebuild Imo structure, noting that the former Imo ADC chairman, Prof James Okoroma and the Rebuild Imo were not working for the interest of the party, and have no respect and regard for the real ADC members, or the rules and regulations that brought them together.

The ADC  Caretaker Committee was  described a child of circumstances which sprang from the imbalance brought about by the anomaly created when Rebuild Imo was integrated into ADC  which later metamorphosed into Rebuild Imo ADC,  because the original members of ADC were dropped from the Executive lists at both state, local government and ward levels and filled with Rebuild members without regard to ADC  template for integration.  While others deemed worthy were relegated to insignificant roles except Prof. James Okoroma who allegedly exchanged, transacted,  maneuvered, and sold the party’s leadership at various state levels  to Rebuild Imo,  in order to maintain his position as the state ADC  Chairman. An action that  have caused internal wranglings within the party.

It was gathered that the ADC  integration  template 3.1  states that ” All persons being considered for membership of the leadership teams and any committees shall first establish their membership by formal registration and obtaining party membership cards” ,

Also template 3.2  states that  “In all cases, integration of members of the coalition, as well as other new members with the existing ADC structures shall be strictly in line with the provisions of the extant ADC constitution”.

It was also gathered that none of these rules and regulations were observed during the coalition process,  meaning that,  the constitutional provisions of ADC in matters of coalition were not carried out.

It was also revealed that the 30% to ADC and 70% to Coalition parties sharing formula for executive members of the party as provided by the ADC coalition template were not also carried out in the appointment of party executives, instead, they dismantled the executive structures of the party, and filled them with members of Rebuild Imo which are not even a political party nor have a chance to be accepted as a Coalition member.

Police detectives from Agbor Area Command have arrested a twenty year old herbalist, Amechi Okwuokenye and his elder step-brother over the alleged abduction and murder of a suspected internet fraudster, Friday Liberty, aged 22 years in his shrine at Owa-Alidima in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.

The herbalist was arrested at his shrine on 23rd October 2025. He and his suspected accomplice are currently in police custody.

The Police also recovered the corpse of the deceased from the suspect’s shrine and deposited same in the mortuary.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe confirmed the report in a statement sent to newsmen in Warri.

The statement said, “It was a case of the hunter becoming the hunted, when on the 30th of September 2025, Mr Friday Liberty, aged 22 years old, visited his herbalist, whom he had known for some time now, but this time, he never returned. The family, who initially didn’t know what had happened to their brother, started looking for him.”

“The girlfriend of the deceased then informed the family that she heard a conversation about the said Friday liberty and a certain herbalist, and advised that they should reach out to the said herbalist.

“The family contacted the herbalist, who denied seeing him but promised to do some spiritual incantations so their brother could return alive.

“Having spent money on the herbalist, and the result was not forthcoming, they then reported the matter at the Agbor Area command via a petition on 14th October 2025.

“And this decision proved to be the turning point in the case as the area command detectives embarked on an intelligence-led investigation.

“During the course of the investigation, the detectives uncovered the last person whom Friday Liberty contacted, and found out it was the same herbalist who denied knowing his whereabouts. Surveillance was laid around his shrine at Owa-Alidima in Ika North East LGA, for days, until he was arrested on 23rd October 2025, in his shrine while hiding inside a refrigerator.

“Upon his arrest, the herbalist Amechi Okwuokenye, aged 20 years, confessed that both he and his brother Smart Okwuokenye, aged 26years, kidnapped the victim liberty Friday and the motorcycle rider identified as Isioma Ugbeje, who carried him to the shrine.

“They kidnapped him and the Okada Rider and demanded a ransom of N10,000,000. When they noticed that the plan was not working, they murdered him and the motorcycle rider and dumped their bodies in a soak away pit by the shrine.”

Gov Mbah, a strong force in APC — Tinubu Support Group

The Director General of the Tinubu Support Group, Dr. Umar Tanko Yakasai, has described Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State as a “strong force” within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Dr. Yakasai made the remark on Friday during the inauguration of the South East Movement for Tinubu 2027 in Enugu, noting that Governor Mbah’s successful defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC with his complete political structure reflects his performance and leadership in the state.

According to Yakasai, both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Mbah share similar political values anchored on hard work, vision, and a commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

“You don’t even need headlights to drive through Enugu at night because of the streetlights. The roads are smooth, the drainages are in order, and the city is very clean. Governor Mbah has completed legacy projects such as the International Conference Centre and the revitalized Presidential Hotel, Enugu,” Yakasai said.

He added that Governor Mbah’s developmental strides and leadership style have earned him overwhelming support from the people of Enugu State, making him a formidable force within the APC.

“It is because of his vision and work ethic that the entire people of Enugu State agreed to move with him from PDP to APC. We in the APC are confident that we have a gargantuan force in Governor Mbah, who will guarantee President Tinubu’s success in 2027,” he stated.

Yakasai expressed optimism about the APC’s growing influence in the South East, attributing it to the commitment of the region’s governors to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He commended the leadership of the South East Movement for Tinubu 2027 for its grassroots mobilization efforts, emphasizing that President Tinubu’s administration is committed to inclusivity and national unity.

“Some of those who got key national appointments under President Tinubu do not even share the same political background with him. That’s proof of his commitment to inclusivity,” Yakasai noted.

In his address, the Acting National Chairman of the movement, Professor Damian Opata, lauded President Tinubu’s economic reforms—particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and floating of the naira—saying the positive impacts are beginning to reflect in the economy.

He pledged that the movement would work to ensure President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, with structures to be replicated across all states, senatorial zones, local governments, and wards in the South East.

Opata also appreciated Governor Mbah for his support, assuring that the movement would collaborate with other political structures to guarantee victory for both Tinubu and Mbah in 2027.

The Chairman of the occasion, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, represented by Henry Okenwa, commended Governor Mbah for connecting Enugu State to “the centre of governance” by joining the APC, describing him as a catalyst for development.

The committee considered 55 requests for state creation on Saturday and unanimously resolved that six additional states be created in the country.

ASUU suspends two-week warning strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has announced the suspension of its two-week warning strike, giving the Federal Government a one-month window to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address other unresolved issues affecting the nation’s university system.

President of the union, Prof. Chris Piwuna, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja, where he explained that the suspension followed fruitful engagements with the Federal Government and key interventions from the National Assembly.

Piwuna recalled that ASUU had declared the warning strike on October 13, 2025, after what he described as the government’s failure to respond to several appeals to address the lingering renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and other welfare-related concerns of university lecturers.

He said, “When we gathered here about 10 days ago to painfully declare a warning strike, it was a decision that left us with no other choice. The government had ignored our repeated overtures to address issues critical to the survival of Nigeria’s public universities.”

The ASUU president revealed that following the commencement of the strike, the Federal Government re-engaged the union through a team led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, which met with ASUU representatives on October 16 and 18, to discuss the government’s response to the draft renegotiated agreement.

According to him, although the meetings did not fully resolve all issues, the union recognised that significant progress had been made compared to the pre-strike period.

He said, “We have not achieved all our objectives, but we are certainly not where we were before the strike began. This shows that had the government responded earlier, there would have been no need for the action.”

Piwuna also commended the intervention of the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, and Labour, as well as the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, whose mediation, he said, had rekindled hope for a lasting resolution.

He stated that the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU, after an emergency meeting held from October 21–22, 2025, reviewed the situation and concluded that the warning strike had achieved part of its purpose, particularly in compelling the government to return to the negotiation table.

“While noting that more work remains to be done, NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike to allow for a conducive atmosphere for further engagement,” Piwuna announced.

He explained that the decision was taken in deference to students, parents, the media, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and other well-meaning Nigerians who had shown solidarity and mediated in the dispute.

ASUU, however, warned that should the government fail to resolve the outstanding issues within the one-month window, the union would be left with no option but to resume strike action without further notice.

“The struggle continues,” Piwuna declared, calling on patriotic Nigerians to prevail on the government to honour its commitments to guarantee industrial harmony and ensure stability in the academic calendar.

Why they don’t want Nnamdi Kanu out alive – Sowore

Former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has alleged that the Nigerian government does not want Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB out alive.

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS since 2021 when he was rearrested over alleged terrorism and treason following his involvement in separatist movement.

On Monday, Sowore led a major protest in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, demanding Kanu’s release.

Several protesters including Kanu’s lawyer and brother were arrested and remanded in the Kuje prison.

In a post on his Facebook page yesterday, Sowore alleged that Kanu is continuously being incarcerated because “they know the lies sustaining their power will collapse once Mazi Nnamdi Kanu walks out as a free man”.

According to Sowore, authorities do not “want Mazi Nnamdi Kanu freed alive, and they are united in that mission.

“Ever since they realized that their web of deceit was beginning to unravel, they have gone into overdrive”.

The activist further declared that the authorities “know that the people’s eyes have opened, and the fake political careers were built on deceit, destruction, and the decimation of the oppressed will not survive the truth.

“They fear his freedom because it will expose their fraud, greed, backstabbing, and betrayal of justice”.

Police recover two children stolen from Anambra in Delta, Edo

Following a nationwide investigation, operatives of the Anambra State Police Command attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CSID) Gender Section, successfully rescued two missing children, namely: Sunday Aliya (14 years) and Ebenezer Emmanuel (12 years), after nine months of intensive and intelligence-led investigation that extended across several States of the Federation.

According to a statement issued by the police public relations officer in Anambra state, IkengaTochukwu, a Superintendent of Police, the case was first reported at Fegge Police Station, Onitsha, on 18th January 2025.

Following the initial investigation, the case was transferred to the SCID Awka for further action.

The operatives acting on credible intelligence traced and arrested one Yusuf in Katsina State. During interrogation, the suspect provided valuable leads which guided the operatives to Umunede, Delta State, where one of the victims, Sunday Aliya, was rescued.

Further investigation led to the recovery of the second victim, Ebenezer Emmanuel, in Benin City, Edo State.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, while commending the operatives for their perseverance and professionalism, reiterated the Command’s resolve to follow every lead in any Case, no matter how long it takes, to ensure that justice is served.

Meanwhile, the Command has contacted the parents of the rescued children, who reside in Ilorin, Kwara State, and arrangements are ongoing for their formal reunification.

Again, Enugu pulls down property used for kidnapping

The Enugu State Government, on Tuesday, demolished yet another building used for kidnapping in the state, an action it said is in line with the laws of the state.

Security agencies had, during the week, rescued a kidnap victim at the demolished property, a bungalow at Umueze Awkunanaw in Nkanu West LGA of the state, used by the prime suspect, Igwenagu Ogbodo, and his gang for holding victims captive.

Ogbodo and some of his gang members, however, escaped with various degrees of gunshot wounds when security agencies stormed the property.

Speaking to newsmen during the demolition, the Council Chairman of Nkanu West LGA, Hon. John Ogbodo, commended Governor Mbah for consistently demonstrating political will in the war against insecurity.

“The prime suspect and his gang kidnapped the person and brought him here. He was rescued and his vehicle recovered. Some arms and ammunition were equally recovered.

“I thank His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, for his political will and demonstration of capacity in line with what he told Ndi Enugu that any house that harbours criminals or is used to aid criminality will be demolished. That is exactly what is happening here today and it is in line with the laws of Enugu State.

“This is not the first house to be demolished in Enugu by this administration, neither is it the second nor the third. But this is the first one to be demolished in Nkanu West, and I know this is going to be a deterrent to other criminal elements.

“I urge every community and Presidents-General to be very mindful of people around them. They should keep an eye on the people and report any suspicious movement to security agencies.

“Again, I want to use this opportunity to advise anyone who has a property in Enugu State to be mindful of his or her tenants and any activities ongoing in their property. This is because any house used to harbour criminality like kidnap victims stands demolished,” he stated.

He said the demolition would serve as a deterrent to the remaining criminals in the state, as there was no hiding place for them given the level of technology and manpower deployed by the governor to stamp out insecurity and criminality from Enugu State.

“The guy who did this is still on the run, but I know that Enugu State Government has the capacity and the equipment to capture him.

“Others who are into criminality should know that there is no hiding place in Enugu State of today because the arm of the government will catch up with them,” he concluded.

Some community members who witnessed the demolition testified to the suspect’s criminal ways and antecedents, noting that he was an ex-convict.

Ikechukwu Amos, who spoke to newsmen, said: “I can’t deny it, he is a criminal. I am their elder and I know how all of them behave. We have been advising him, but he refused. You have seen the resultant effect of his unholy character.

“This same boy returned from prison not too long ago. Since then, he has been maintaining bad company, using this place for all manner of illicit activities like smoking Indian hemp and other hard substances. I am not surprised that something of this nature will happen, and it has happened.”

Another indigene of Umueze Awkunanaw, Edeh Chidera Kingsley, also spoke about the prime suspect’s criminal records: “Any young man who doesn’t want to work to get money but chooses kidnapping should face the music.

“Fela, as he is also known, is a lazy man. If you call him for work, he would say that he would not go. He finds pleasure in drinking.”

The Councilor of the ward, Uchenna Jideofor, thanked the governor for putting into effect the harsh measures prescribed by the laws of Enugu State against kidnapping, describing the demolition as a welcome development for the people and leaders of Umueze Awkunanaw.

“The guy is notorious in criminal activities. In my first tenure, I made sure that some of them were remanded in prison, but after everything he was later released by some people from the community. And any time they come back, people will be witnessing insecurity in the community. The guy is involved in so many things.

“This morning, I had a confrontation with the neighbours, telling them that they are not doing us good by not giving us information on what is happening. But what is happening here now will serve as a lesson to others that have chosen the fast lane,” he said.

UNICEF, FG train journalists on ethical reporting, child rights

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, yesterday commenced a two-day media training on ethical journalism and child rights reporting for journalists drawn from the South-East, South-South, and North-Central regions of Nigeria.

The training, funded by UNICEF, is aimed at strengthening the capacity of media practitioners to report children’s issues with sensitivity, fairness, and respect for human dignity. It also sought  to promote responsible storytelling that safeguards the identities and rights of children.

Falayi Temitoye, Assistant Director and Head of the Child Rights Information Bureau, who represented the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Chinasa Ogbodo, stressed the importance of ethical journalism in shaping public attitudes toward children.

“It is a real pleasure to welcome you all to this important training on ethical and child rights reporting,” Temitoye said. “The media holds immense power, the power to inform, inspire, and hold institutions accountable. But with that power comes the responsibility to report with integrity, sensitivity, and respect for human dignity.”

She urged journalists to exercise caution when reporting on children, noting that “every image, every word, and every frame we publish can have lasting consequences on a child’s life, safety, and future.” Temitoye commended UNICEF for its continued partnership with the ministry and encouraged participants to make the most of the training sessions.

Anselm Audu, UNICEF’s Chief Field Officer in Port Harcourt, in his keynote address, highlighted the crucial role of ethical journalism in protecting vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.

“The media has the power to amplify the voices of children and draw attention to the issues affecting their well-being,” Audu said. “But that same power must be used responsibly.”

He added that ethical journalism fosters trust, prevents harm, and promotes peace. “Ethical reporting is the antidote to misinformation and hate speech,” he noted. “It helps to calm tempers, promote dialogue, and build peace, especially during times of social tension.”

Susan Akila, UNICEF Nigeria’s Communications Specialist and Acting Chief of Communication, Advocacy, and Partnership, reaffirmed the agency’s strong collaboration with the media.

“We do not take our media partners for granted because you are the foot soldiers,” she said. “Children do not have a voice, and journalists are in the best position to speak for them responsibly.”

The two-day workshop featured  interactive discussions, case studies, and practical sessions designed to deepen journalists’ understanding of ethical standards in reporting on children and to strengthen their commitment to child-sensitive journalism across media platforms.

Tears of joy as Anambra Police rescue two missing children after nine months of nationwide search

After nine long months of uncertainty and heartbreak, two missing children — Sunday Aliya (14) and Ebenezer Emmanuel (12) — have finally been rescued by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command, bringing an emotional end to a harrowing ordeal that spanned several states across Nigeria.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the rescue followed a painstaking, intelligence-driven investigation led by officers of the upState Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Gender Section, who refused to give up despite the passage of time.

The case was first reported at the Fegge Police Station on January 18, 2025, when the boys’ guardian raised the alarm that the children, who had gone to fetch water at a nearby borehole, never returned home. The matter was later transferred to the SCID in Awka for a more comprehensive investigation.

Acting on credible intelligence, detectives tracked down and arrested a key suspect, identified as Yusuf, in Katsina State. During interrogation, the suspect provided vital information that led to a breakthrough in the investigation.

“The suspect’s confession guided operatives to Umunede, Delta State, where one of the victims, Sunday Aliya, was found. Further leads led to the rescue of the second child, Ebenezer Emmanuel, in Benin City, Edo State,” the statement said.

Speaking on the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc, mnips, PhD, commended the officers for their perseverance, professionalism, and relentless pursuit of justice. 18-year-old emerges youngest Nigerian commercial pilot

Nigeria has produced one of the youngest commercial pilots at 18.

He is Mohammed Aminu Sani, who earned a United State Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Commercial Multi-Engine Pilot License from Phoenix East Aviation (PEA) in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The 18-year-old Sani completed the entire programme in 10 months, passing every stage of training without a single checkride failure, an  impressive accomplishment, even for seasoned trainees, which is a testament to discipline, resilience and focus.

Sani, in a statement, explained: “Becoming a pilot has always been my childhood dream, and today I am proud to say I’m living that dream and enjoying every step of the journey. It’s been an incredible experience filled with hard work, discipline and passion. I hope my story inspires others to chase their dreams with determination and never give up on what they believe”.

He represented  a new wave of young Nigerians breaking international barriers through education, determination and excellence.

Born and raised in Abuja Nigeria, Sani completed his High School Diploma at Al-Hidaayah Academy before proceeding to The Regent College Abuja, where he graduated with Distinction in Economics Foundation.

His academic excellence laid the groundwork for his flight training in the United States. At Phoenix East Aviation, one of the world’s most respected FAA Part 141 flight schools, he trained in diverse conditions, ranging from night flights and cross-country missions to instrument-rated navigation through rain and low visibility.

He logged an impressive flight hours, including over 50 hours on multi-engine aircraft like the PA-34-200 Seneca and over 30 hours of cross-country flight time.

He now holds an FAA Commercial Pilot License (AMEL).

Beyond the numbers, Sani’s achievement resonates deeply with Nigeria’s youth population. In a time when many young people seek inspiration and global relevance, his story stands as proof that age is not a barrier to excellence and that dreams, when matched with determination, can take flight literally.

He aspired to join a leading airline, where he hopes to continue learning, flying, and representing Nigeria proudly among the world’s elite aviators.

Reps probe $850bn unrepatriated crude oil proceeds

The House of Representatives has commenced investigations into the alleged non-repatriation of Nigeria’s crude oil export proceeds estimated at over $850 billion between 1996 and 2014.

Chairman of the House Ad-Hoc Committee on Pre-Shipment Inspection of Exports and Non-Repatriation of Crude Oil Proceeds, Hon ‘Seyi Sowunmi, disclosed this yesterday during the Committee’s inaugural press briefing at the National Assembly, Abuja.

He said recent allegations suggest a significant breakdown in compliance with the Pre-shipment Inspection of Exports Act, with operators in the oil and gas sector reportedly failing to repatriate between 40 and 45 per cent of Nigeria’s crude oil export proceeds, contrary to the law, which mandates full repatriation of export earnings within 90 days for oil exports and 180 days for non-oil exports.

Sowunmi also expressed concern over the “worrisome disparity” in export-earnings data reported by government agencies such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Department of Petroleum Resources (now NUPRC), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), as well as inconsistencies between Nigerian data and that of international bodies like OPEC.

He added that non-oil exports, especially those involving solid minerals and other commodities, have also been marked by “high non-compliant export earnings reports.”

According to him, the Pre-shipment Inspection of Exports Act (CAP P26, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004) established the Nigerian Export Supervision Scheme (NESS) to prevent capital flight, ensure accurate export valuation, and safeguard Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings. Before the Act was enacted in 1996, he said, the country suffered from “endemic leakages in the form of under-valuation, delayed invoicing, price manipulation, illegal swaps, and deliberate over-loading.”

The Committee, he explained, will probe the exact volume and value of unrepatriated export proceeds from oil, gas, and non-oil sectors since 1996, determine why government agencies produce conflicting export data, and engage experts for a forensic reconciliation of export-proceeds accounts. It will also investigate the management and utilization of funds under the NESS.

“This Committee will be guided strictly by evidence, not speculation. Our work will be document-based, data-driven, transparent, and verifiable,” Sowunmi said. “Our aim is simple: Nigeria must receive, in full and promptly, every dollar legally due from its exports.”

He assured that the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas is fully committed to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by plugging revenue leakages and recovering lost funds for the Federation Account.

Sowunmi further announced the Committee will actively utilise existing whistleblowing channels, promising confidentiality and possible financial rewards for individuals who provide credible information.

“The Committee will actively utilize existing whistleblowing channels, guaranteeing confidentiality and possible rewards for credible information from industry staff, inspection agents, bankers, and concerned citizens,” he stated, adding that this step was crucial to encourage transparency and expose fraudulent practices within the export value chain.

He called for the cooperation of all stakeholders—including oil operators, regulators, financial institutions, and exporters, emphasizing that the investigation is a “whole-of-system exercise.”

“Operators must supply shipment-to-receipt trails; regulators must reconcile production, certification, and FX returns; and financial institutions must provide account-level evidence of repatriation within time. Where breaches are discovered, appropriate civil and criminal sanctions shall be applied,” he warned.

Sowunmi described the Committee’s task as non-partisan, stressing that it is aimed purely at safeguarding the nation’s economic integrity.

“Our measure of success is not publicity, but verifiable financial recovery to the Federation Account,” he said. “This inquiry is non-partisan; it is about protecting and strengthening our economy in the interest of our great nation, Nigeria.”

He acknowledged the crucial role of the media in the Committee’s work, urging journalists to ensure accurate, evidence-based reporting and to avoid speculation. The Committee, he said, would provide periodic factual updates and publish non-sensitive documents when necessary.

“Members of the press are critical partners in ensuring accurate, evidence-based reporting. We urge the media to focus on verifiable progress and avoid premature figures that could mislead the public,” he said.

Sowunmi called for collective support from Nigerians, emphasizing that transparency and accountability are central to the Committee’s work.

Reps move against alleged use of harmful chemicals to preserve perishable foods

The House of Representatives has resolved to probe the alleged use of killer chemicals for preserving fruits and prolonging the shelf life of perishable foods.

The resolution was sequel to the unanimous adoption of a motion by Chike Okafor (APC-Imo) at plenary yesterday.

Moving the motion, Mr Okafor said that the use of harmful chemicals as preservatives in Nigeria posed a clear danger to the health and wellness of millions of our citizens.

According to him, available reports from regulatory bodies, health experts, and media investigations reveaed l that the chemicals commonly used for embalming corpses and industrial processes were now being used for ripening fruits and to prolong the shelf life of perishable foods.

“These chemicals pose serious health risks to consumers, including the potential for developmental disorder (autism) in children, cancer, organ damage, and other life-threatening health conditions for uncountable Nigerians, as documented by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

“This is not a new alarm. This house is aware of the 2019 alert by NAFDAC on the use of formalin on fish and meat. We recall the 2022 study by the University of Ibadan, which found dangerous levels of pesticide residues in frozen foods. Despite these worrisome past reports, the practice persists. We are now facing what can only be described as the systematic poisoning of our populace.

“There is a dangerous development today: a huge number of young men and women in Nigeria are suffering from liver damage and kidney failure, and there is a noticeable increase in the number of children suffering from autism, and the cause of these is not far-fetched,” he said.

Mr Okafor said that as representatives of the people, the members cannot ignore the warnings any longer, calling for fast actions to protect the Nigerians from this catastrophe.

In his ruling, the deputy speaker, Benjamin Kalu, referred the matter to relevant committees led by the House Committee on Food Security and Nutrition to investigate the allegation.

They mandated the committee to report back within two weeks for further legislative actions.

Addressing journalists after the plenary, Mr Okafor, who is the chairman of the House Committee on Food Security and Nutrition, said that it is a case of emergency.

He said that the committees had started work already, as the case was very alarming, pledging that the committees will go all out to bring in all those culpable.

Nnamdi Kanu’s family clears Sowore of involvement in arrest of brother, lawyer

The family of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has dismissed claims linking human rights activist Omoyele Sowore to the arrest of Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and his lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, during Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Kanunta Kanu, who spoke for the family, condemned the arrests, describing them as unlawful and provocative. He demanded the immediate release of Emmanuel, Ejimakor, and other demonstrators who were apprehended during what he said was a peaceful protest.

Kanunta expressed dismay over allegations that Sowore betrayed the arrested individuals, calling such accusations “mischievously incorrect.”

“Those pointing accusing fingers at Sowore should stop it. Saying that he sold out Barrister Aloy Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel Kanu is incorrect,” he said. “He did what he was supposed to do by mobilizing Nigerians to protest against injustice. Some Nigerians and Igbo politicians are peddling this lie because they are ashamed that Sowore did what they failed to do.”Nigerian politics book

He accused some political elites in the South East of deliberately spreading falsehoods about Sowore out of embarrassment that “a non-Igbo had the courage to do what they could not.”

The family also accused the Federal Government of using state institutions to persecute Nnamdi Kanu and intimidate the Igbo people. They alleged that the recent arrests were meant to emotionally destabilize Kanu ahead of his court appearance scheduled for Thursday.

“The government knows it has no case against him; that’s why they are employing all manner of tactics to weaken him,” the statement said.

According to the family, the protesters acted within their constitutional rights, and the police lacked any legal justification to detain them.

“It’s clear that the police did not obtain any court injunction stopping the protest. If such existed, they would have shown it,” Kanunta asserted.

The Kanu family also refuted reports that a team from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) had visited the IPOB leader for a medical examination as ordered by Justice James Omotosho.

“NMA did not examine Nnamdi Kanu as directed by the presiding judge. They went on the instruction of the prosecutor. Where did the concocted report presented to the court come from? No NMA medical team visited Kanu,” the statement queried

The family warned that the continued detention of Kanu and the government’s disregard for multiple court orders could fuel greater unrest in the country.

“It is disturbing that Nigeria’s President, the Inspector General of Police, and the judiciary are the ones supervising the persecution of Nnamdi Kanu and Ndigbo,” they said. “Who are those opposing Kanu’s release and disobeying court orders while citing nonexistent injunctions against peaceful protests? The oppressors should know that the time is fast approaching when they will no longer be able to suppress the people.”

Sowore, meanwhile, in a separate reaction, criticized the Nigerian Army for shutting down Banex Plaza in Abuja, following a clash between soldiers and traders, describing the act as “an abuse of power” and warning that the persecution of the Igbo people was “reaching a dangerous tipping point.”

Cardinal Parolin describes Nigeria’s violence against Christians a ‘social conflict’

Cardinal Parolin has said that attacks on Christians in Nigeria stem from social rather than religious causes, citing shared suffering among Christians and Muslims alike.

At an event in Rome marking the release of the 2025 Religious Freedom Report by Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), the Holy See’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, asserted that the conflict “is not a religious conflict, but rather a social one — for example, disputes between herders and farmers.”

He added pointedly: “We should also recognise that many Muslims in Nigeria are themselves victims of this same intolerance.” He further warned: “These are extremist groups that make no distinctions in pursuing their goals. They use violence against anyone they see as an opponent.”

In his keynote address, Cardinal Parolin affirmed that “religious freedom [is] a fundamental aspect of human existence” and stressed that “it is incumbent upon governments and communities alike to refrain from compelling anyone to violate their deeply held convictions or obstructing anybody from living them out authentically.”

The Italian cardinal’s remarks came amid mounting international concern over the plight of Christians in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where farmers and herders — often Christians and Muslims  have been drawn into cycles of violence.

The remarks by Cardinal Parolin have sparked immediate criticism from observers who argue that they risk downplaying the nature of the attacks in Nigeria. The advocacy group Observatory of Religious Freedom in Africa (ORFA) described the cardinal’s claim that the violence “is not a religious conflict” as a “myth”, pointing to data indicating that over half of civilian victims in certain Nigerian attacks were Christian.

Others voiced concern that such framing may obscure the targeted nature of assaults on churches, priests, and Christian communities.

The ACN’s 2025 Religious Freedom Report, launched at the same event, revealed that more than five billion people — around two-thirds of the world’s population — live in countries where serious violations of religious freedom occur. Of the 196 nations surveyed, 62 were found to have significant restrictions on religious liberty, with 24 classed as “persecution” and 38 as “discrimination”.

The report identified jihadist violence as the leading cause of persecution in 15 countries and discrimination in 10 others, with Sub-Saharan Africa the region most affected. It also recorded a sharp rise in anti-Christian vandalism across Western nations, including almost 1,000 attacks on churches in France. Meanwhile, authoritarian regimes such as China, Iran, and Nicaragua continue to employ digital surveillance to curtail religious activity. Only two countries, Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka, showed measurable improvement over the past year.

A spokesperson for ACN (UK) later told The Catholic Herald: “Bishop Bakeni was in accord with Cardinal Parolin, telling the UK Parliament yesterday (Tuesday 21st) that ‘the conflict is not solely about religion’. The Nigerian bishop was clear that the underlying causes of the violence in the Middle Belt are complex, including lack of land, poverty, and climate change. But Bishop Bakeni pointed out that even if the attacks are not primarily driven by religion, there is a religious dimension to them as Islamist extremists target churches, priests, and symbols of Christianity. It is worth noting that His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin did not mention Nigeria during his talk at the launch of ACN’s Religious Freedom in the World report in Rome, and his alleged comments refer to remarks made to journalists outside the event.”

Senate steps down bill seeking five-year jail term for abortion drug suppliers

The Senate Yesterday stepped down a bill proposing a five-year jail term for anyone who supplies drugs or instruments used to procure abortion, following confusion over the bill’s language and intent.

This was disclosed in a clip by NASS TV, from the Tuesday session.

The decision came after the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, moved that the proposed legislation be referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further examination and report within two weeks.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) seconded the motion, describing the bill, titled Supplying Drugs or Instruments to Procure Abortion, as “unclear and potentially misleading.” He warned that the current phrasing could criminalise legitimate medical prescriptions if not properly defined.

“In view of the confusion generated by the title and the interpretation that anyone taking or supplying any drug at all could face five years imprisonment, it is only fair that this bill be stepped down for clearer legal interpretation,” Kalu said.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, upheld the motion and ruled that the bill be suspended for further legal scrutiny.

“The Deputy Senate President has proposed a motion that we step down further consideration of this bill and refer it to our Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters to get back to us in two weeks. “Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a strong leader and member of this Assembly, has seconded it,” Akpabio said before calling a voice vote.

However, shortly after the decision, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) sought permission to speak, arguing that the subject directly affected women and required a more sensitive discussion.

“Mr President, please may I speak? I am a woman, and abortion has to do with women,” she said.

Her request was, however, opposed by Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North), who cautioned that reopening debate after a resolution would violate parliamentary procedure.

“Once the gavel has been dropped, the rule is clear, no further discussion. If we start granting exceptions, then we will have no rules,” Oshiomhole said.

Akpabio sustained the objection, citing Rule 52(6) of the Senate Standing Orders, which bars reconsideration of any matter already concluded unless through a formal motion for rescission.

He ruled Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan out of order and reaffirmed that the bill had been stepped down “in totality” pending the committee’s findings.

The bill, which has sparked debates among lawmakers and the public, will now undergo further consultations and legal review before any fresh consideration by the Senate.

Reps move to resolve feud between PENGASSAN, Dangote refinery

The House of Representatives has constituted an ad hoc committee, chaired by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, to mediate in the ongoing dispute between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and the Dangote Refinery.

The decision followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance jointly sponsored by Rep. Alhassan Ado Doguwa and Rep. Abdulsamad Dasuki, titled “The Need to Protect Strategic Private Investments from Adversarial Unionism,” during Yesterday plenary.

Moving the motion, Doguwa expressed concern over the recent face-off between PENGASSAN and the management of the Dangote Refinery located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos. The industrial action, he said, disrupted operations at the $20 billion facility, the largest single-train refinery in the world.

According to Doguwa, the strike resulted in a temporary disruption of crude oil production, with an estimated daily loss of 200,000 barrels over three days. He added that the situation aggravated the fuel supply crisis nationwide, leading to scarcity and long queues at filling stations across several states, thereby inflicting hardship on Nigerians.

He said, “Dangote Refinery represents a strategic private investment of immense national importance, with the capacity to strengthen energy security, reduce dependence on fuel importation, create jobs, and save foreign exchange.

“We are aware that the Dangote Refinery operates within a Free Trade Zone and therefore falls under the regulatory framework of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority, particularly Section 18(5) of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Act, which clearly states that ‘Employment in the free zone shall be governed by rules and regulations made by the Authority and not subject to the provisions of any enactments relating to employment matters.’

“The House is concerned that actions by labour unions that disregard the legal protections conferred on Free Zones under the NEPZA Act not only constitute a breach of law but also create a hostile investment environment that may deter future local and foreign investors.

“We are worried that if private investments of strategic national importance are continually subjected to unlawful disruptions by adversarial unionism, Nigeria risks not only the failure of key economic assets but also the erosion of investor confidence necessary for national growth and development.”

Following the adoption of the motion, the House urged its leadership to broker peace between the two parties in the interest of the nation.

CAN fires back at presidency, says ‘Christian genocide’ is real

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has accused the Presidency of twisting facts and misrepresenting its position on the ongoing killings of Christians across the country, insisting that what is happening in several parts of Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt amounts to a ‘Christian genocide’.

In a statement issued by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN clarified that it did not, at any point, dismiss or describe the widespread killings as a ‘so-called Christian genocide’, as claimed in a press release reportedly issued by Barrister Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Policy Communication.

According to the statement, the controversy followed Bwala’s visit to the CAN Secretariat at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, on Monday, during which he sought to understand CAN’s position on remarks made by United States Senator Ted Cruz, who described the persistent killings of Christians in Nigeria as a ‘Christian genocide’.

“CAN made it clear that its position on this issue has long been established and remains unchanged. Across many parts of Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt, Christian communities have suffered repeated, organised and brutal attacks which have left thousands dead, villages destroyed and families displaced. These are not isolated crimes but a continuing pattern of violence that has persisted for years without justice or closure,” the CAN President said.

CAN expressed alarm over the Presidency’s subsequent release titled ‘Presidency Debunks Western Christian Genocide Narrative in Dialogue with CAN Leadership’.

The apex Christian body said the report falsely suggested that Archbishop Okoh had downplayed the killings by describing them as a ‘so-called Christian genocide’.

“That portrayal is completely false and grossly unfair. The meeting was recorded by CAN’s media team, and at no point did Archbishop Okoh use such words or express such a view. Referring to the tragedy as a ‘so-called genocide’ trivialises the pain of countless Christians who have lost loved ones, homes and places of worship in targeted attacks,” Archbishop Okoh said.

The Christian body added that during the meeting, Bishop Mike Akpami, its Director of Planning, Research and Strategy, presented verified data from www.orfa.africa showing consistent and targeted attacks on Christians across several regions of Africa, including Nigeria.

Those present at the meeting included: Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President; Rev. (Dr.) Stephen Panya Baba, Vice President; Apostle (Prof.) Samson Fatokun, General Secretary; Dean Rev. Emmanuel Nicodemus Ozumba, Director of Education, Women and Youth; Dame Comfort Otera Chigbue (Esq), Director of Legal and Public Affairs; Bishop Mike Akpami, Director of Planning, Research and Strategy; Prophet Commodore Abimbola Ayuba, Director of National Issues and Social Welfare; Rev. Dr. Simon Dolly, Secretary, North Central Zone; and Dr. Victor Ivoke, Senior Special Assistant to the CAN President.

For the avoidance of doubt, CAN clarified that Rev. Dr. Uzoaku Williams, Assistant General Secretary, and Dr. Celestine Aharanwa, whose names appeared in some media reports, were not present at the meeting.

“We call on the Federal Government and security agencies to act with urgency, fairness and transparency to halt these killings and bring all perpetrators to justice.

“We also urge media professionals and government officials to speak with truth, empathy and responsibility, as careless words can deepen wounds and undermine peace,” Archbishop Okoh said.

CAN reiterated that its commitment to peace does not mean silence in the face of injustice and that truth must always guide engagement between the Church, the State and the public.

Soludo, other candidates to sign peace accord ahead of November election

Ahead of the 2025 governorship election in Anambra State, which holds on November 8, the National Peace Committee, (NPC) the Secretariat of The Kukah Centre has stated that the commission will subject candidates of the 16 political parties participating in the election to a peace deal.

The Executive Director of The Kukah Centre and Head of the Secretariat of the NPC, Rev. Fr. Atta Barkindo stated this in Awka during a pre-election engagement with stakeholders.

Barkindo while making welcome remarks at the event, said: “We at Kukah centre have come to work with you people who are on ground, and know the social and cultural make up of this state. We are coming to see what we can do to consolidate on the peace you already have here.

“We will be here next week for the signing of the peace accord, and members of the National Peace Committee, and the chairman, Gen. Abdulsalami Abukakar would be here.

“We have notified the governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and the candidates. We do this so that if after the election there is a problem, we will be able to sit with those who are involved to make peace. With that accord, the peace committee will have the moral right to step in and resolve issues.

“Most stories about killings that we hear are rumours, misinformation and outright lies. The impression they give us is that there is insecurity everywhere and this is why the National Peace Committee headed by Gen. Abdulsalami Abukakar came to work with you people to ensure that the forthcoming election is peaceful.

“We have a natural responsibility to pass a peaceful state to the generation unborn because we will be outlived by the state. The state belongs to you all and in the next 50 years you may not be here, but you owe it to the generation unborn to pass a peaceful state to them,” Barkindo said.

Speaking on the expectations of the committee, he said: “Our expectation is that the election will be peaceful, we have not let INEC do their job, especially now that we have a brand new INEC chairman.

“We are hoping that Anambra will be the first (he will hold election) and things will completely look different, not just for Anambra but for Nigeria as a whole, with a very credible and transparent electoral process. These are our expectations.

“Our fear are normal, fear of unforseen circumstances, something that can suddenly emerge. We will be relying on the security services for that, their intelligence gathering, so that if there are any things that eventually emerge, they can treat it.

“We are advising the candidates to conduct themselves well, in decent manners that reflect the values they stand for. Our code of conduct in the National Peace Committee applies to all of them. We expect that every political party will have a situation room, there are agencies constitutionally empowered to deal with violence, so they should not encourage their supporters to take up arms against anyone. Nobody’s blood is worth spilling for his election.

“So we expect the candidates who are leaders of their political parties to lead their supporters aright. They should comply with the laws and with those who are in charge of the various sections of the election.

“Even the voters should conduct themselves well. We are also warning against posting of fake results, misinformation, disinformation, sharing of fake images, things that have the potential to provoke people and incite them to violence. We are calling on all the people of Anambra to please desist from these.

“Anambra is one of the most progressive, enterprising and ingenious state in Nigeria. They are known for innovation and we want that spirit of peace to lead as we go into the election.”

The engagement which witnessed the attendance of various heads of security agencies, traditional institution, civil society, media and governorship contenders, featured presentation of the peace accord expected to be signed by the contenders.

Court sacks Ebonyi council chairmen, councillors elected in 2024

A federal High Court, Abakaliki Division yesterday nullified the election that brought to office the current 13 council chairmen and their Councilors in the state, declaring the election unconstitutional.

It was gathered that the court nullified the 2024 Local government election conducted by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission, (EBSIEC) for disobedience and non compliance with the Electoral Act.

It would be recalled that the court had earlier nullified the previous August 2022 election and declared it null and void over the same unlawful procedure.

30 burnt to death while scooping fuel from fallen tanker

…Over 40 injured

At least 30 people have allegedly lost their lives and around 40 sustained various degrees of injuries in a tanker explosion.

It was gathered the incident occurred yesterday morning in Essan and Badeggi communities along the Bida-Agaie road in Katcha local government area.

According to eyewitnesses, the victims were scooping petroleum products from the overturned tanker when it exploded, and left some bodies burnt beyond recognition.

They stated that those injured were rushed to nearby hospitals in the area for treatment.

Confirming the incident, Farouk Mohammed Kawo, Niger State Chairman of Tanker Drivers and NUPENG stated that the tanker was transporting petroleum products from Lagos to the North.

Kawo lamented that over 30 tanker trailers have been involved in accidents in the same area this October alone.

He also decried the community’s habit of scooping oil from accident-prone vehicles, while citing a recent incident where a groundnut oil tanker overturned and its contents were scooped by residents.

The chairman appealed to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s administration to urgently grade the affected road to prevent further loss of lives and property.

He then emphasized the need for government’s intervention to address the recurring accidents on roads in the state.

Efforts to reach the state Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, for confirmation failed as at the time of filing this report.

Probe begins on woman’s death over forced marriage

The Borno State Police Command said it has begun an investigation into the allegations that a young woman killed herself after her father allegedly insisted on a forced marriage in the Gubio Local Government Area of the state.

It was reported on Monday that the victim took her own life after she was forced to marry one of her father’s friends.

According to the news medium, the incident occurred on Sunday following persistent resistance from the lady to her father’s suggestion.

The report read in part, “A young woman in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State has reportedly taken her own life after being forced by her father to marry one of his friends.  “It occurred on Sunday evening around 6:20 p.m., when the woman, said to be under intense emotional distress, ended her life after repeated pressure from her family to proceed with the arranged marriage.

“She had earlier told her family that she was unwilling to marry the man chosen by her father.” Similarly, a counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, shared details of the incident on his X page on Monday.

According to Makama’s post, the woman allegedly took her life after her father insisted she marry one of his friends despite her refusal.

He quoted a local child protection volunteer, Bukar Fantami, describing the incident as a “painful reality” faced by some young women in rural communities.

He said, “The emotional pain and pressure she went through because of the forced marriage pushed her into taking her own life. It is truly a sad situation that calls for urgent action.” Reacting to the report in a statement on Monday, the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, disclosed that an investigation had commenced into the incident. The PPRO noted that although the details of the incident could not yet be established, the command was committed to unravelling the circumstances behind the incident. Nigeria’s population growth could increase poverty, economists warn

Daso stated, “The attention of the command has been drawn to a viral publication circulating on various social media platforms, alleging that a young woman in Gubio Local Government Area took her own life after being forced by her father to marry one of his friends. “The command wishes to inform the general public that the Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, has ordered a discreet investigation into the authenticity and circumstances surrounding the said report.

“The command is committed to establishing the true facts of the matter and therefore calls on individuals with credible and verifiable information to come forward and assist the Police in the ongoing investigation.”

He urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information that could cause panic and emotional distress in the state.

“The public is further advised to exercise caution and restraint in sharing unverified information, especially on sensitive matters that may cause panic, emotional distress, or misrepresentation of facts. “While the command remains dedicated to protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of all citizens, it also warns that spreading false or misleading information is punishable under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015,” the PPRO concluded.

This incident adds to a worrying rise in suicide-related cases reported in Borno State and across Nigeria. PUNCH Metro had on October 9 reported that a 30-year-old woman, Adama Hannafi, from Auyakawa village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, was found dead after allegedly taking her own life by hanging.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Shi’isu Adam, had explained that officers found her body hanging from a tree and no foul play was suspected.

In another case, a 42-year-old native doctor in the state was found hanging after being declared missing for days.

Experts have attributed the growing cases of suicide in Nigeria to economic hardship, family conflicts, and untreated mental health issues.

Outrage as woman ‘commits suicide’ over forced marriage in Borno

The Borno State Police Command has begun investigation into a viral publication circulating on various social media platforms of a young woman who allegedly took her own life due to forced marriage in Gubio local government area of the State.

The woman was alleged to have taken her own life after the father forced her to marry one of his friends.

In a statement to journalists yesterday in Maiduguri, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, said the Command wished to inform the general public that the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has ordered a discreet investigation into the authenticity and circumstances surrounding the said viral report.

Daso said the Command was committed to establishing the true facts of the matter and, therefore, called on individuals with credible and verifiable information to come forward and assist the Police in the ongoing investigation.

He said, “The attention of the Command has been drawn to a viral publication circulating on various social media platforms, alleging that a young woman in Gubio local government area took her own life after being forced by her father to marry one of his friends.

“The Command wishes to inform the general public that the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, psc, has ordered a discreet investigation into the authenticity and circumstances surrounding the said report.

“The Command is committed to establishing the true facts of the matter and therefore calls on individuals with credible and verifiable information to come forward and assist the Police in the ongoing investigation.”

He further advised members of the public to exercise caution and restraint in sharing unverified information, especially on sensitive matters that may cause panic, emotional distress, or misrepresentation of facts.

The PPRO said while the Command remained dedicated to protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of all citizens, it also warned that spreading false or misleading information is punishable under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.

“The Borno State Police Command assures residents of its unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order, promoting accountability, and ensuring that justice and truth prevail,” the statement added.

However, local child protection volunteer Bukar Fantami Gubio has urged human rights organisations, law enforcement agencies, and relevant authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that justice was served.

Gubio emphasised the need to protect young women’s rights, freedom, and dignity against all forms of abuse and coercion, highlighting that forced marriages are a significant violation of human rights.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the State, with community members and activists calling for urgent action to prevent similar cases.

NBS restates commitment to provision of credible data for development

The National Bureau of Statistics has reaffirmed its commitment to providing credible, high-quality, and accessible data to support evidence-based policymaking aimed at driving sustainable national development and transformational change.

The Statistician-General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the NBS, Adeyemi Adeniran, made this known yesterday in Abuja during the 2025 World Statistics Day celebration event.

Adeniran noted that the world was undergoing rapid socioeconomic transformation, digital evolution, climate change, and shifting global dynamics, stressing that data remained central to navigating today’s increasingly complex and interconnected challenges effectively.

“To address these evolving challenges, we require credible, timely, high-quality data presented in usable formats, produced sustainably to inform vital decisions at all levels of society,” Adeniran said.

He pointed to two recent milestones by the bureau: the rebasing of both the Gross Domestic Product and the Consumer Price Index, which enhanced the reliability of national statistical reporting.

Adeniran said those exercises were essential to improving data accuracy, aligning statistics with current realities, and enabling policymakers to make informed economic, social, and developmental decisions that responded to national priorities.

“The GDP rebasing, concluded in July 2025, shifted the base year from 2010 to 2019 to better capture Nigeria’s present economic structure and the evolution of its productive sectors and industries.”

According to him, the GDP exercise included emerging sectors like the digital economy, creative industries, food economy, pension management, and informal markets, providing a more comprehensive view of Nigeria’s evolving economic landscape.

“The rebasing gives us clearer insights into real economic performance and lays a stronger foundation for data-informed planning, investment, and policymaking,” Adeniran said.

On the CPI rebasing, he said the base year changed from 2009 to 2024, while the consumer basket expanded from 740 to more than 930 items, reflecting changes in household consumption behaviour.

He explained that this would improve the accuracy of inflation measurements and how price changes affected Nigerian households, particularly the most vulnerable, while strengthening economic and fiscal policymaking efforts.

Beyond those milestones, Adeniran said NBS was modernising its data operations by leveraging digital technology, strengthening innovation, and working closely with ministries, departments, and agencies to build a robust data system.

He highlighted the Integrated System of Administrative Statistics as a major innovation designed to streamline data collection, processing, and sharing across the public sector using existing administrative records and institutional cooperation.

“Our mantra, ‘Data for Everyone,’ isn’t just a slogan, it’s a commitment.

“It urges all data stakeholders to democratise access and embed data-informed thinking across all sectors,” he said.

Adeniran acknowledged persistent challenges, including inadequate funding, skills gaps, and difficulties in attracting and retaining qualified statisticians and data scientists needed to meet the bureau’s growing operational demands.

“Good statistics are about people, not just numbers.

“Each data point reflects a farmer needing credit, a student learning, or a business planning. Together, with data, we drive change,” he said.

Dr Victoria Okafor, representing the World Bank, commended the NBS’s innovative efforts in producing quality, timely, and reliable statistics, and pledged the Bank’s continued partnership and technical support to the agency.

UNICEF representative Mrs Bai Ajoku reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s statistical systems and called on stakeholders to ensure those systems received adequate financing for inclusive national development.

The reports said  that the 2025 World Statistics Day is celebrated with the theme: “Driving Change with Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone.”

Umahi issues 14- day ultimatum to contractor handling Aba- Enugu- Port-Harcourt Highway

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has issued a 14-day notice of termination to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) over the company’s poor handling of the Aba-bound section of the Aba–Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.

He also ordered that the project be descoped and re-awarded to a more competent indigenous contractor.

The minister expressed disappointment that the CCECC had repeatedly failed to comply with the new construction codes and regulations, despite several warnings and reminders.

Speaking during an on-the-spot assessment of the project, Umahi faulted the firm’s substandard work, particularly on the Port Harcourt-bound lane, which he said had deteriorated barely two years after completion.

This was contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Orji Orji, in Abuja.

Umahi said that “if you get to the Port Harcourt end, which they did about two years ago, the entire road has almost totally failed. We have been writing to them to maintain this road.

“They have refused, and so I have to take responsibility and make decisions. Number one, the Port Harcourt-bound lane is descoped, it will no longer be handled by CCECC.

“I will direct the Ministry of Works to scout for qualified indigenous contractors to take over the Port Harcourt-bound section. They should be ready to mobilize immediately while we sort out funding.

“Number two, for the section currently handled by CCECC, they should be issued a 14-day notice of termination. If, after 14 days, they fail to mill out and replace the defective binder, the job will be terminated.”

He emphasized that the contractor must commit in writing to rectify the defects at its own cost, even if the work resumes during the dry season.

“Even if they are going to do it during the dry season, they must maintain the sections already done and provide written assurance that they will mill out the binder layer, which we have paid for, and replace it properly,” Umahi added.

However, the Minister, commended Arab Contractors O.A.O. Nigeria Limited for their quality work on the Enugu–Port Harcourt Dual Carriageway, describing the project as one nearing completion and meeting the ministry’s standards.

Umahi also acknowledged the challenges of inherited road projects nationwide and expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support in revamping Nigeria’s road infrastructure sector.

Don’t use alleged coup to intimidate opposition – ADC tells FG

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned the Federal Government not to use the recent reports of an alleged coup plot as an excuse to intimidate opposition leaders or silence dissenting voices.

In a statement issued yesterday  and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said it views any threat to Nigeria’s democratic order with utmost concern.

However, the party cautioned that the government must not exploit the situation to instill fear, suppress criticism, or gain political advantage under the cover of national security.

“The ADC has been closely monitoring the reports of an alleged coup plot involving some arrested military officers and claims that a former southern governor is under investigation for allegedly funding the suspects,” Abdullahi said.

“While we strongly oppose any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s constitutional order, we are equally worried that such allegations could be used to justify political witch-hunts or manipulate public sentiment.”

The party expressed concern over the conflicting statements from government sources, noting that the Defence Headquarters had publicly denied ever announcing any coup plot despite media reports suggesting otherwise.

“Such inconsistency raises fears that the coup narrative may have been politically engineered,” the statement added.

According to the ADC, the Federal Government’s silence on the matter is fueling suspicion and confusion among citizens.

“By keeping quiet, the government has deliberately allowed the coup story to fester for whatever reason,” Abdullahi said. “What is clear, however, is that the government is exploiting the coup story to divert attention from the real issues of misgovernance and to curry sympathy.”

The party also warned that the situation could be used as a pretext to clamp down on opposition figures or place them under surveillance.

“We understand that the APC government is desperate, but such desperation must never be allowed to endanger our democracy or undermine the democratic rights of citizens,” Abdullahi stated.

The ADC called on the government to make a clear and transparent statement about the alleged coup and to stop using national security as a weapon against political opponents. “If there is truly a threat to national security, the government should brief the nation accordingly,” the statement said.

“Otherwise, it must desist from weaponising national security as a pretext to silence opposition and political dissent.”

The party said it stands firmly against dictatorship in any form.

“The ADC supports all legitimate actions taken in defence of our constitution and democracy,” Abdullahi said.

“In the same vein, we oppose any attempt by the government to intimidate legitimate voices under the guise of national security.”
