2027: OK Movement gets new National Director General

The OK Movement has appointed a former Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, Peter Ameh, as its National Director General ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Movement made this announcement in a statement posted on its verified X handle yesterday.

“The OK Movement is pleased to announce the appointment of High Chief Peter Ameh, as the National Director General of the OK Movement.

“With his vast wealth of experience in politics, leadership, and nation-building, we are confident he will provide the strategic direction needed to strengthen the Movement and lead us towards victory,” the statement read.

This came after the Movement appointed the Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, as its Head of the Advisory Council.

The reports said that the OK Movement is a political group comprising the supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabi’u Kwankwaso.

Abia govt begins distribution of 50 transformers to communities across 17 LGAs

As part of sustained efforts to expand access to reliable electricity and strengthen power infrastructure in rural communities, the Abia State Government has commenced the first phase of the distribution of 50 electricity transformers to communities across the 17 LGAs of the state.

The distribution took place at the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities. Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, said the exercise is in line with the Governor’s directive to consolidate electricity infrastructure and improve power supply across Abia State.

He stated that the initiative forms part of the Governor’s broader agenda to ensure that communities experiencing prolonged power outages due to faulty or unavailable transformers are reconnected to the national grid.

“Today, we are commencing the distribution of transformers to communities across the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State. This is in line with the directives of the Governor to enhance and consolidate electricity infrastructure within the state.

“These transformers will be installed across various electricity networks in Umuahia and other parts of Abia to strengthen and boost electricity infrastructure. It is one of the programmes of the State Government to ensure that electricity reaches our people, especially those in rural communities that have been without power due to transformer-related challenges.”

The distribution marked the first phase of the intervention. Fifty communities are benefiting in the current exercise, while another 50 communities will benefit during the second phase scheduled for the third quarter of the year.

“Today, we are distributing transformers to 50 communities across the state. This is the first batch, and within the third quarter, we intend to commence the second batch, which will also cover another 50 communities. It is a continuous intervention aimed at addressing electricity needs across the state,” Engr. Monday disclosed.

He said the Ministry adopted a transparent, needs-based approach to ensure that communities with the most pressing electricity challenges receive priority. He added that numerous applications were received from different communities, and the Ministry carefully assessed each request before making its decisions.

“The selection is based primarily on need. We receive applications from different communities, but we carry out proper assessments because there are communities that already have two or three functional transformers and still apply whenever distribution is announced.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that transformers get to communities that genuinely require them. While we also observe the principle of first-come, first-served, priority is always given to areas with the greatest need,” he said.

The Commissioner maintained that measures have been put in place to safeguard the transformers against vandalism. He emphasized that protecting public infrastructure is a shared responsibility between government and host communities.

He said every benefiting community is required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with the Ministry, accepting responsibility for securing the transformer.

Responding on behalf of the benefiting communities, the member representing Umuahia Central in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Anthony Chinasa Abiola, who received the transformer for Ward 3, Umuahia Central, and the President General of Okaiuga Nkwoegwu, Engr. Victor Ihediwa, who received on behalf of Nkwoegwu community, thanked the Governor for his efforts to achieve steady power in the state.

Retired Abia Perm Secs, says they are in financial distress plead with Gov. Otti Over Unpaid Gratuities

A forum of permanent secretaries compulsorily retired from the Abia State Civil Service has pleaded with the Abia State Government to immediately pay them their gratuities saying the current economic hardship is seriously affecting them.

It will be recalled that a similar appeal was made on October 31, 2023, but the appeal was not yielded to.

The demand was made known in a press release signed by the forum’s spokesman and former Permanent Secretary, Government House, Mr. Nkwachukwu Agomoh.

The retirees, however, applauded the Governor for his developmental strides in the state, especially in infrastructure, roads, health, and other critical areas across the state. They urged him to extend the same commitment to the welfare of retired workers whose livelihoods now depend on pensions and gratuities.

“We are expressing concern over the prolonged delay in the payment of our retirement benefits despite repeated assurances from the government,” the Forum said.

They noted that although the administration has recorded visible achievements in road construction and other infrastructure projects, many retired senior civil servants are struggling to survive amid the rising cost of living.

The Forum noted that the remaining months before the commencement of election campaigns present an opportunity for the governor to bring relief to retired civil servants by fulfilling his promise to pay their gratuities.

The group recalled that the Governor had assured workers during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration that gratuity payments would commence, but decried that no payments had been made, leaving many of them in financial distress.

“We are urging the governor to immediately direct the State Accountant-General to begin the release and payment of accumulated gratuities,” they said.

“We want to remind Governor Alex Otti of his promise to us before our abrupt retirement to pay all our retirement entitlements. We appeal to him to commence the payment of gratuities with our group,” the statement added.

The Forum said the appeal had become necessary because of the harsh economic realities confronting them, including the rising cost of food, school fees, electricity, cooking gas, and healthcare.

“Many of our members now depend entirely on their pensions and are finding it increasingly difficult to meet basic family needs and medical expenses,” the retirees noted.

The Forum maintained that it is optimistic the Governor will listen to their plight, adding that payment of the outstanding gratuities will restore dignity and hope in government.

 

Unapproved shops face demolition in FCT as Zuba Council Chair draws battle-line

The Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Hon. Kasim Mohammed Ikwa, has warned that all illegally constructed corner shops in Zuba will be demolished, condemning the unauthorised sale and development of such structures.

Zuba is a major border and gateway community in the Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nigeria, known as a key transit nexus connected to Niger State and major northern and southern highways.

Ikwa gave the warning during an unscheduled inspection of affected areas around Zuba Roundabout, behind Living Faith Church, Car Wash, Fruit Market and Panteker Market on Saturday.

He said the inspection followed reports of ongoing illegal sales and construction of corner shops in parts of Zuba.

The chairman condemned the activities of individuals erecting shops on land that does not belong to them.

According to him, many of the illegal structures have prevented the rightful owners from accessing and developing their properties.

He directed those responsible for selling the illegal shop spaces to refund buyers immediately, stressing that the council would not tolerate fraudulent land transactions or unauthorised developments.

Ikwa also disclosed that work on the Zuba Water Project would soon commence, noting that some of the illegal structures had been erected along the proposed pipeline route.

He warned that allowing such structures to remain would obstruct the laying of pipes and delay the project.

The chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enforcing development regulations, protecting the rights of genuine property owners and ensuring that critical infrastructure projects are executed without obstruction for the benefit of residents.

Don’t delay execution of FCT projects as Tinubu administration continues – Wike to contractors

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Barr. Nyesom Wike yesterday warned contractors handling various road and infrastructure projects across the territory against delaying execution.

Noting that the mandate of President Bola Tinubu’s administration is far from over, the minister stressed that project delivery must remain on fast-track until the end of the administration’s first tenure on May 29, 2027.

Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing road projects in Abuja, the Minister declared that the FCT Administration (FCTA) would not tolerate any laxity, emphasising that public trust in the present administration was built on “promises made and promises fulfilled.”

​Inspecting the long-delayed Apo-Karshi road project first awarded in 2010, Wike expressed satisfaction with the renewed pace of work, attributing the progress to the direct backing of President Tinubu.

He commended the contractors for deploying streetlights and pushing forward on the critical corridor, as well as the host communities for their cooperation.

However, the minister issued a firm directive to contractors handling the Bwari-Kubwa road axis, reminding them of the commitement made.

​Wike declared, “Has the tenure of Mr President ended? Certainly not. His first tenure will be ending precisely May 29, 2027. So if that is the case, it means that the work has also not ended.

People expected that we should take out some time to rest, but the work is also important. We have made promises to the people during the commissioning and flag-off that there are very strategic projects that have to be commissioned before the end of the year”.

​Addressing the Bwari-Kubwa road project, he added, “I don’t want the contractor to start shifting goalposts. They are contractors that I commend and they have always been serious, so I think that before the end of this year, they should be able to handover this road to us. We will do our own part by making sure that funds are made available to them before the dry season comes”.

​The minister assured residents that all 10 strategic projects slated for completion across the territory would be delivered before January, warning that the administration would not allow public confidence in its delivery capacity to erode.

​On the growing rate of illegal street car racing in residential parts of the nation’s capital, Wike appealed to young enthusiasts to respect the rights and safety of other road users.

While acknowledging that improved road networks in Abuja may have tempted sports enthusiasts to showcase the city’s infrastructure, he stressed that public safety remains paramount.

The minister disclosed that although no formal written complaint had reached his desk, the FCTA would immediately direct its Traffic Section to enforce restrictions and protect innocent citizens from harm.

”First of all, they are trying to show how beautiful the roads are, forgetting that there are aspects of it that also pose some danger to innocent citizens,” Wike noted.

The minister said, “Now that we have heard it, I will check the Traffic Section and let them understand that we will not allow that.

”If they are going to carry out car races, we have designated areas where they should do that, but not where we have residences of people. Nobody would allow that. Your rights have limitations, and life is more important. We will do everything possible to see that we don’t allow car racing within residential areas.”

 

NBA demands immediate release of abducted Kebbi Judge

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the abduction of Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court, describing the incident as an attack on the judiciary, the administration of justice and the rule of law.

In a statement issued by its President, Afam Osigwe (SAN), the association called for the judge’s immediate and unconditional release, urging security agencies to deploy all available resources to secure his freedom.

Justice Bunza was abducted from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State by suspected armed bandits.

The NBA said the attack on a serving judicial officer threatens the independence of the judiciary and undermines public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.

“This brazen attack on a serving judicial officer is not only an assault on the person of Justice Bunza but a direct attack on the Nigerian judiciary, the administration of justice, and the rule of law,” the statement read.

The association expressed concern over what it described as the growing boldness of criminal groups targeting judicial officers and other institutions responsible for upholding justice.

It called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, the National Security Adviser and other security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the judge unharmed and bring those responsible to justice.

The NBA also urged the Kebbi State Government to work closely with federal security agencies to secure Justice Bunza’s release and prosecute those behind the abduction.

It further called for improved security measures for judicial officers across the country, stressing that judges must be adequately protected to enable them carry out their constitutional duties without fear or intimidation.

Presidency knocks Peter Obi over criticism of Tinubu’s policies

The Presidency has dismissed criticism by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, over the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, insisting that the administration’s policies are delivering measurable results across the country.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, made the remarks in a post on his X handle yesterday, where he faulted Obi’s assessment of the Tinubu administration during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, describing it as detached from realities on the ground.

According to Onanuga, the impact of the administration’s programmes is evident in communities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

“Obi needs to get off the high of his rabid movement. The unmistakable trail of Renewed Hope shimmers across all villages, towns, cities, and local government areas in all six geopolitical zones,” he wrote.

The presidential aide disclosed that members of the Presidential Communications Team had been touring different parts of the country to independently evaluate the implementation of government policies and obtain feedback from citizens.

“The Presidential Communication Team has been touring all zones to see things for themselves, feel the pulse of Nigerians, and conduit feedback to the government,” Onanuga stated.

He also maintained that there was ample evidence of the administration’s economic reforms and development initiatives, saying reports documenting the government’s achievements were readily available.

“If Obi cares, there’s a digital binder full of reports of Nigeria’s economic turnaround under the current administration, inclusive of many transformative projects, policies, and programmes, such as NELFUND, that are impacting Nigerians at the critical cellular level,” he added.

Onanuga’s response followed recent comments by Obi, who criticised the Tinubu administration’s performance and questioned the effectiveness of its economic and governance policies.

Leave Buhari out of ‘fake’ agency controversy – Media office

The Buhari Media Office (BMO) has dismissed claims linking the late former President Muhammadu Buhari to the controversy surrounding the alleged Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) and the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC).

It insisted that the former administration had no connection with what it described as the current “comedy-drama” over a purported fictitious government agency.

In a statement yesterday, BMO said reports suggesting that Buhari created a fictitious agency and allegedly allocated N1.3 billion in the 2026 Appropriation were false and without factual basis.

According to the office, the Buhari administration established only the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC), an ad-hoc advisory body made up of professional economists and financial experts to provide economic advice to the President.

The media office explained that when the council was inaugurated, it operated from the second floor of the Federal Ministry of Health offices designated for the chief economic adviser to the President, a position that was filled much later, at the Federal Secretariat.

It further clarified that the PEAC had no budget line throughout the Buhari administration, with its activities financed through presidential approvals granted to the minister of finance.

The statement noted that the council functioned as a part-time advisory body chaired by Professor Doyin Salami, who was later appointed chief economic adviser to the President.

Other members of the council, according to the BMO, included Professor Mahmuda Sagagi as vice chairman, Professors Ode Ojowu and Chukwuma Soludo, Dr. Shehu Yahaya, Dr. Iyabo Masha, Mr. Bismark Rewane, and Dr. Mohammed Adaya Salisu, who served as secretary in his capacity as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Development Policy.

The BMO stated that members of the council were not paid salaries, while office expenses were settled by the Permanent Secretary, State House, following presidential approval.

It added that after the current administration assumed office in 2023, it neither dissolved the Buhari-appointed PEAC nor reappointed its members.

According to the statement, the members regarded their appointments as having expired with the end of the administration that constituted the council because they were political appointees.

The office also said the Secretariat office branded as both the “Presidential Economic Advisory Council” and the “Office of the Chief Economic Adviser to the President” remained vacant after the end of the Buhari administration and was only occupied two to three years later.

The BMO maintained that attempts to trace the ongoing PFIPC/PEAC controversy to the Buhari administration were “false, groundless and lack any factual basis.”

Produce CCTV footage – Ex-DSS director dares Al-Mustapha over Abacha’s death claim

Retired Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has challenged former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd.), to produce CCTV footage of the military ruler’s final hours if he disputes the account contained in his memoir.

Amachree made the challenge while reacting to Al-Mustapha’s dismissal of claims in his newly released book, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield, in which he alleged that Abacha died after suffering a coitus-induced cardiac arrest in the early hours of June 8, 1998.

Al-Mustapha had described Amachree’s account as false and urged Nigerians not to believe it. Speaking, the retired intelligence officer said Al-Mustapha should present evidence rather than merely rejecting his account.  “If he says what I wrote is false, let him produce the CCTV footage of what happened,” Amachree said. He maintained that Al-Mustapha’s response should be based on verifiable facts instead of personal attacks. According to Amachree, simply describing his account as false does not invalidate the findings contained in his memoir.

Amachree further defended his credentials, noting that he retired from the DSS as an Assistant Director, a rank he said is equivalent to a Brigadier in the Nigerian Army.

“I retired as an Assistant Director, which in army terms is equivalent to a Brigadier, while Al-Mustapha retired as a Major,” he added.

In the 348-page memoir, Amachree claimed that Abacha died at about 4:05 a.m. on June 8, 1998, after suffering what he described as a coitus-induced cardiac arrest inside the Presidential Villa Guest House in Abuja.

The retired DSS officer said he was involved in the investigation that followed the late military ruler’s sudden death and maintained that the account in his book was based on his experience and knowledge of the incident.

Nigeria needs new leadership — Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to step aside ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that Nigeria needs a leader with the energy and capacity to confront its worsening economic and security challenges.

Obi made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he said the President’s performance in office had fallen short of what the country requires.

Drawing a distinction between Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State governor and his current administration, Obi said, “The Bola Tinubu that was governor is not the one that is president today. He’s tired. He should be allowed to retire in peace and then go home.”

The former Anambra State governor maintained that Nigeria was moving in the wrong direction under the current administration.

“As it is right now, Bola Tinubu is leading us nowhere. We will turn it so he can see it. That’s why maybe I’m calling for his retirement. The man should just step aside. Yes, he doesn’t have the capacity to do the job,” he said.

Obi also expressed concern over what he described as Nigeria’s worsening poverty, hunger and insecurity, saying public discourse should focus on the country’s pressing challenges rather than politics.

Citing recent poverty projections, he said, “The World Bank has just said that 79 per cent of Nigerians are going to face poverty. In a country of 230 million people, that’s over 180 million. That should be the issue we should be discussing.”

He added that issues such as education, healthcare and public spending deserved greater attention.

“They should be talking about the issue of out-of-school children, talking about the issue of health, and all these monies that are missing here and there that would have been invested properly. Nobody is discussing it,” Obi said.

On food insecurity, the former governor argued that the 2027 election should centre on improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

“This election in 2027 should be about issues that affect ordinary Nigerians. The World Food Programme has just said 35 million Nigerians are going to face hunger. Nigerians are being kidnapped. Let’s talk about Nigeria,” he said.

Responding to comments by United States President Donald Trump commending Tinubu’s efforts to tackle insecurity, Obi acknowledged the recognition but insisted more needed to be done.

“Thank you to Donald Trump. Thank you to President Trump. But we need to do more, far more than what we are doing,” he said.

Obi added, “I’ve heard people, and Donald Trump is now confirming it, say he has done his best. But with the crisis we are facing, his best is not enough. We need to do more.”

He pointed to recent incidents of mass abductions in Zamfara State as evidence that insecurity remained a national emergency.

“On Wednesday, 40 people were abducted in Zamfara, and the entire community, everybody is packing to run away. On Thursday, 50 were abducted. So we’re in a crisis situation that requires another capacity,” he said.

Obi argued that lasting security could only be achieved by addressing poverty and expanding access to education.  “You can’t create mass poverty and think you can deal with insecurity. The more you put people out of poverty, the more you reduce criminality. You need to invest massively in education,” he said.

He said that if elected president, he would personally take responsibility for protecting Nigerians.  “Whatever it takes to secure any Nigerian, I will do that,” Obi said, adding, “If your people are dying, you should be ready to die. You’re the president. You’re the number one person.” Speaking on his 2027 ambition, Obi reiterated that his interest was not driven by a desire for political office but by his vision for the country.

“I’m not desperate to be Nigerian president. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work,” he said. He added that he would support any leader capable of delivering good governance.  “If it’s working, I’ll support whatever makes it work,” Obi said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s current state, Obi lamented what he described as a steady decline in living conditions.  “Every year we’re headed south, where more and more people have been impoverished, more and more children are out of school. Things are going in the wrong direction,” he said.

He said his goal remained to build “a Nigeria that is united and peaceful” and where every citizen has equal opportunities irrespective of ethnic or religious background.

Reps order IGP to produce PFIPC DG within 48 hours

The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) has directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, to produce the council’s Director-General, Adeniyi Adeyemi, before the panel within 48 hours.

The directive was issued yesterday during the committee’s resumed investigative hearing as lawmakers intensified their probe into the controversial council, which they described as an alleged fake government agency.

The committee said Adeyemi’s appearance was essential to provide firsthand testimony on the establishment, legal status and operations of the PFIPC.

“The Director-General must be produced before this committee within 48 hours to answer questions relating to the ongoing investigation into the activities of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council,” the committee directed.

Lawmakers fixed Wednesday for Adeyemi’s appearance, stressing that his testimony is critical to uncovering the facts surrounding the agency and determining whether it was lawfully established.

Although the committee did not disclose the full details of the allegations against the council, members maintained that the investigation is aimed at establishing the authenticity of the agency and the circumstances surrounding its operations.

The PFIPC has been at the centre of public controversy in recent months following corruption allegations made by its Director-General against the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, over budgetary allocations reportedly linked to the agency.

The controversy prompted President Bola Tinubu to direct the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the matter and submit its findings within 30 days.

Meanwhile, Adeyemi is currently in police custody following his arrest in Osun State after a Federal High Court in Abuja issued a bench warrant against him in connection with alleged forgery and impersonation charges brought by the Nigeria Police Force.

The controversy surrounding the PFIPC has continued to generate widespread public attention, with opposition figures, policy analysts and civil society groups calling for a comprehensive investigation into how the agency allegedly appeared in the Federal Government’s budget, secured office space within the Federal Secretariat and reportedly operated domiciliary accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria despite questions over its legal status.

Fubara endorses Rivers APC guber candidate, joins Wike’s Rainbow Coalition

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has declared his support for the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in the state, Kingsley Chinda.

Fubara also endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office.

The governor equally announced that he has joined the Rainbow Coalition, a political alliance spearheaded by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Fubara made the declaration yesterday during the groundbreaking and foundation-laying ceremony of the Rivien Medical Industry project in Rumuosi, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Addressing his supporters, the governor urged them to align with him by joining the Rainbow Coalition.

“I am supporting President Tinubu for the Presidency and OK Chinda to be the next Governor of Rivers State.

“I am part of the Rainbow Coalition, and I’m back to my political family,” the governor said.

PFIPC Scandal: We rejected collaboration with ‘Fake’ Agency – Foreign affairs ministry

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has disowned the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), saying it never had any official dealings with the council or its alleged director-general, Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi.

Adeyemi was confirmed by security authorities as being unknown to the federal government.

Permanent secretary of the ministry, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, stated this when he represented the minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, before the House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee investigating the PFIPC at the National Assembly Complex on Tuesday.

Ahmed, however, said the so-called director-general of PFIPC had approached the Ministry on three occasions – 26 June 2025, 5 August 2025, and 5 June 2026 – seeking its collaboration and endorsement to host a World Investment Summit in Nigeria.

He stated that the Ministry declined all three requests after conducting due diligence, citing inconsistencies and discrepancies in the correspondence submitted by the self-acclaimed director-general, as well as concerns about the legitimacy of both the Council and its purported leadership.

The permanent secretary said the Ministry subsequently wrote to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) on 16 October 2025, requesting clarification on the status of Adeyemi as director-general of the PFIPC.

He told the Committee that the Office of the National Security Adviser replied on 26 November 2025, stating that enquiries made with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) and the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President established that Prince Adeyemi was unknown to any office of the federal government.

Ahmed also informed lawmakers that the Ministry never participated in any diplomatic engagement, bilateral or multilateral discussions involving the PFIPC, nor did it facilitate any foreign investors, international partners or delegations on behalf of the council.

He said no Memorandum of Understanding, treaty, or investment agreement was signed with any foreign government through the PFIPC, and that no Nigerian mission abroad had any interaction with the council because the Ministry never issued any directive recognising its activities.

The permanent secretary further stated that apart from the correspondence already submitted to the Committee, the Ministry had no official records relating to the PFIPC.

He insisted that the Ministry had never recognised, collaborated with or engaged the PFIPC or its alleged director-general in any official capacity.

The Committee chairman, Hon. Yusuf Gagdi (APC, Plateau), expressed concern over the revelation that the Office of the National Security Adviser had, as far back as November 2025, established that the federal government did not recognise the alleged director-general and the purported council.

He questioned the steps taken by the nation’s security architecture after the discovery, insisting that the Committee was duty-bound to ascertain whether appropriate action had been taken to curtail the organisation’s activities.

The Committee, therefore, invited the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to appear before it on Thursday at 12:00  to explain the actions taken by his office after confirming that the PFIPC was not a recognised government institution.

The Committee also insisted that the Minister of Foreign Affairs must appear in person before the panel to provide further clarification on issues arising from the Ministry’s submissions.

Gagdi said the invitations were necessary because the Committee needed to determine what actions the Office of the National Security Adviser took after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs raised concerns about the organisation’s authenticity.

“It is now the duty of the Committee to move further and invite the Office of the National Security Adviser to come and answer the very important question raised by Honourable Abubakar Fulata that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a letter from this agency under investigation, whether it exists or it doesn’t exist.

“What have you done as an office that has the power and capacity to carry out further investigation in respect of this matter? He is to appear before this Committee because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received correspondence from the suspended Director-General that raises suspicions of foul play and discrepancies.

“The NSA responded that it is an illegal agency. What has the Office of the National Security Adviser done as a security institution after that discovery? If they had discovered that the agency did not exist, appropriate action ought to have been taken. They should come before this Committee and explain the actions they have taken,” he added.

More revelations are expected as the House Ad-hoc Committee continues with the investigation into the existence and operations of the PFIPC.

 

At its inaugural meeting on Monday, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said it had opened two foreign-currency domiciliary accounts for the controversial Presidential Council.

The director of Banking Services Department at the CBN, Hamisu Ibrahim, said the accounts, one in US dollars and the other in British pounds sterling, were opened following a mandate received from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

“On 30 July 2025, we received a mandate dated 29 July 2025 from the Office of the Accountant-General. We received the mandate to authorise two accounts: one a dollar-domiciled and the other a pound-domiciled account for the Presidential Economic Advisory Council/Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council.

“The process of opening an account requires a mandate from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation. Once we receive that mandate, we perform all the necessary verifications to confirm that this mandate is actually coming from that office,” Ibrahim said.

He, however, noted that no one came to activate the accounts after they were opened, and that they had zero balance.

“We did not receive any correspondence, mandate, signature or mandate cards. We were not introduced to the authorising or approving officers.

“Based on that, those accounts remain inactive, with zero balance. There have been no foreign exchange allocations,” Ibrahim added.

 ‘Execute them in seven days’ – MURIC demands death penalty for terrorists

An Islamic group, Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has demanded the death penalty for anyone found guilty of terrorism in any part of Nigeria.

MURIC maintained that anyone found guilty of active participation in terrorism in any part of Nigeria should be executed within seven days of judgment.

The organisation advised the Federal Government to put all legal instruments in place in order to achieve the aim.

MURIC made the demand in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The reports said that two terrorists – Abubakar Abba and Mahmud Usman – were sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Abuja Federal High Court on Monday.

But, Akintola in his reaction, described the judgement as too lenient.

In a statement made available to Newsmen on Wednesday, the MURIC leader described terrorists are hardened and merciless criminals.

He maintained that terrorists should be eliminated with immediate effect.

Akintola in the statement explained that it is dangerous to keep terrorists with other inmates in correctional facilities.

On behalf of MURIC, Akintola demanded death penalty for any terrorist found guilty of active participation in terror attacks.

He added that in view of the tendency of terrorists to plan attacks from correctional facilities, MURIC demands that terrorists sentenced to death must be executed within seven days of the judgement.

Akintola in the statement said, “We therefore demand the death penalty for any terrorist found guilty of active participation in terror attacks.”

Trump commends Tinubu over fight against terrorism, protection of Christians

United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his decisive leadership in tackling terrorism and insecurity in Nigeria, particularly attacks on Christian communities.

Trump conveyed the commendation in a letter dated July 6, 2026, to Tinubu, the details of which were made public yesterday in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

In the letter titled ‘President Trump lauds President Tinubu’s decisive leadership against terrorists’, Trump praised Tinubu’s efforts to address security challenges and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people.

“I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities, and it is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous,” Trump wrote.

The statement said Trump described the relationship between both countries as crucial at a time when security challenges have spread across West Africa.

“The United States-Nigeria relationship is crucial at a time when conflict has spread across West Africa and around the world. We both share a mutual goal of confronting terrorism in all its forms, and our historic US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap has established a robust framework to accomplish this feat,” he said.

Trump also highlighted ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries, noting that the United States had deployed Special Operations Forces to support Nigeria’s military.

“I am proud to have deployed the United States Special Operations Forces—among the most elite military units anywhere in the world—to equip the brave men and women in the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the skills, tools and intelligence they need to protect your homeland and ensure the safety and security of citizens, particularly those of faith who have been under attack.

“I look forward to our continued discussions over the course of my Presidency.” he stated.

According to the Presidency, Nigeria and the United States have strengthened security cooperation in recent months, following the establishment of a Joint Working Group co-chaired by the National Security Advisers of both countries.

The statement added that the partnership has focused on training, intelligence sharing and joint operations against terrorist groups.

It also said one of the outcomes of the collaboration was the May 16 coordinated operation against ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad region, which reportedly resulted in the killing of the group’s top leader, Abubakar Al-Minoki, and several of his lieutenants.

The Presidency further noted that the US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, visited Abuja last week, where he met with senior Nigerian government officials and pledged to deepen cooperation between both countries in security and other areas.

Nigeria retains position as Africa’s most populous country, now 242.4 million

Nigeria has retained its position as Africa’s most populous country, with an estimated population of 242.4 million people in 2026, according to the latest population estimates by Worldometer sighted by Our Correspondent yesterday.

The figure placed Nigeria ahead of Ethiopia and Egypt, which rank second and third respectively among the continent’s most populous nations.

Africa remains the world’s fastest-growing continent, with its population projected to exceed 2.5 billion by 2050, driven by youthful populations, high fertility rates and improvements in healthcare.

Nigeria’s population estimate is based on projections, as the country’s last official census was conducted in 2006, when the population stood at 140.4 million.

According to the World Bank, Nigeria’s population growth rate was estimated at 2.1 per cent in 2025, contributing to its continued demographic expansion.

The top 10 most populous countries in Africa in 2026 are:

Police lead payroll fraud list as ICPC exposes 908 ghost workers

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) said it has uncovered 908 ghost workers across several federal ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), recovering about N942 million allegedly paid out through the fraudulent payroll scheme.

According to BBC Pidgin, ICPC Chairman Musa Aliyu disclosed that the discovery followed an investigation launched in 2024 after the commission identified irregularities in pension payments.

Aliyu explained that the probe exposed widespread payroll manipulation, with fictitious names allegedly inserted into government salary systems to syphon public funds.

He alleged that some senior public officials enrolled relatives and associates on government payrolls and diverted the salaries for personal use.

The ICPC chairman cited one case in which a suspect allegedly placed the names of his wife, son and mother-in-law on the payroll while also collecting the salaries of 12 other workers.

He said the investigation covered at least 50 federal MDAs, with the Nigeria Police Force recording the highest number of suspected ghost workers at 570.

Other affected institutions include the National Water Resources Authority with 80 ghost workers, the Federal Ministry of Works with 56, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with 24, and the Ministry of Defence with 19.

Aliyu added that the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment each recorded 17 ghost workers, while the Federal Ministry of Health had 15 and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation had 12.

He further disclosed that the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Interior were also implicated in the investigation, although the commission withheld the number of affected names in those institutions as inquiries continue.

Catholic Bishop lauds Uzodimma for Orlu-Mgbee Akokwa Road

In a rare endorsements of policies of the secular world, the Auxiliary Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Orlu, Most Rev Thomas Obiatuegwu has eulogized Gov Hope Uzodimma for embarking upon the total reconstruction of the Orlu-Mgbee -Akokwa Road.

He was particularly excited that the governor decided to permanently rebuild the Mgbee bridge, which had remained intractable for more than four decades.

The Bishop who undertook an independent assessment of work being done on the road, especially the bridge, expressed  appreciation to the governor for a “fantastic work”.

According to him, “I’m at the site to see what they are doing, and I discovered that they have done wonderfully well, in fact, they are almost done.”

Bishop Obiatuegwu described the quality of work done at the bridge as exceptional, saying that it would certainly last for a long time.

He explained that he personally did the video of the work and sent it to the governor to appreciate him for a work well done.

“I did the video myself to send it to Onwa (Governor) for him to know what is being done. I don’t know whether they have been sending him updates,” the Bishop said.

He prayed for the governor to continue to deliver quality jobs for the people of Imo State, as exemplified by the road, especially the Mgbee bridge.

Uzodimma: Technology key to Nigeria’s prosperity

Governor Hope Uzodimma has said that technology is key to Nigeria’s prosperity, commending the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi for establishing a Skill Acquisition Centre in Owerri North, Imo State.

He also described the initiative as a major step towards preparing young Nigerians for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Speaking at the commissioning of the centre, built by Senator Onyewuchi in collaboration with NASENI, Uzodimma said Nigeria could no longer afford to lag behind in technological advancement, stressing that skills development remains the pathway to employment and economic prosperity.

“This is not about giving people fish; it is about teaching them how to fish,” the governor said, adding that graduates of the centre should be supported with start-up capital to establish businesses and create jobs for others.

Uzodimma lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for prioritising technology and innovation through NASENI, and explained that the agency had consistently demonstrated commitment to empowering Imo residents.

He also urged the host community and local authorities to protect the facility from vandalism, describing public assets as investments that must be preserved for the benefit of future generations.

Senator Onyewuchi had said the newly commissioned Skill Acquisition Centre in Imo State is aimed at equipping youths with practical skills to promote self-reliance and reduce unemployment.

Speaking earlier, the Senator representing Imo East senatorial District, said the Centre reflects his commitment to empowering constituents through vocational training and entrepreneurship.

Minimum Wage: We’re battle ready for major national struggle — NLC vows

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has vowed that it would continue its national struggle for a thorough review of the national minimum wage.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said this at an event by pensioners in Abuja.

According to him, it is no longer acceptable to discuss the welfare of workers without also discussing the welfare of those who have completed their active years of service.

The NLC boss urged Nigerian workers and pensioners to get prepared for the ideological and economic battles that lie ahead.

“The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, is one of the proud affiliates of the Nigeria Labour Congress. Therefore, your struggle is our struggle, and your welfare remains a priority for the organised labour movement.

“We are currently in the preparatory stages for a major national struggle for a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage.

“However, let me state unequivocally that it is no longer acceptable to discuss the welfare of workers without also discussing the welfare of those who have completed their active years of service,” he said.

Vice President Kashim Shettima yesterday arrived in Lungi, Sierra Leone, to participate in the 69th Economic Community of West African States Heads of State and Government Summit.

On arrival at the Sierra Leone International Airport, Lungi, Shettima was received by Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Dr Mohamed Jalloh; Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Sola Enikanolaiye.

Imo APP raises alarm over attack on secretariat, destruction of billboards

The Imo State Chapter of the Action Peoples’ Party, (APP), has raised the alarm over the invasion of its Secretariat in Owerri by suspected political thugs in the early hours of yesterday.

The party described the incident as a serious threat to democracy, the rule of law, and peaceful political participation in Imo State.

lt said the incident occurred at about 6:10 am when a group of heavily armed individuals in a commando manner, scaled the perimeter fence of the secretariat and forcefully gained access to the premises.

The party stated that it has also received reports from eyewitnesses alleging that the group was led by an aide to the governor of lmo State alongside some of his associates.

According to the eyewitness accounts, the individuals allegedly vandalised party property, including the destruction of the party’s billboard and other campaign materials mounted within the premises of the secretariat.

This was contained in a statement issued yesterday by the party’s state Publicity Secretary, Steve Nnamdi and made available to newsmen in Owerri.

“The Action Peoples’ Party views this alleged act as a disturbing development capable of undermining the peaceful political atmosphere currently existing in the state,” the statement said.

The party expressed concern over what it described as a pattern of politically motivated intimidation, following similar incidents reportedly recorded at Umuoyima in Owerri Municipal Council, and at Arondizuogu in Ideato North LGA.

The Imo APP therefore, called on relevant security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), to immediately commence a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into these allegations.

The party insisted that anyone found culpable, irrespective of status or political affiliation, should be made to face the full weight of the law.

“Every registered political party has the constitutional right to conduct its lawful activities without fear, intimidation, harassment, or unlawful interference.”

The APP appealed to Governor Hope Uzodinma and all security agencies to urgently intervene by calling all political actors and government officials to order.

“It is imperative that every political party is provided with a level playing field to freely engage in legitimate political activities as preparations for future elections continue across the state,” the statement added.

The party urged all its members, supporters and the general public to remain calm, law abiding and refrain from any form of retaliation while allowing the appropriate security agencies to carry out their constitutional responsibilities.

Why I picked Kwankwaso as my running mate – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has explained why he chose former Kano State governor and Kwankwasiyya Movement leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in an interview with Our Correspondent, Obi said the decision was driven by their shared vision of lifting Nigerians out of poverty through education and economic development.

According to him, Kwankwaso’s philosophy aligns with his own agenda for transforming the country.

“Kwankwaso has the philosophy of pulling people out of poverty.

“I have the same philosophy. Kwankwaso believes in education. You cannot change society without education.

“If you look at my X, formerly Twitter, I made it clear that I will emphasise education. Education is going to change society.

“Nigeria must be seen to form its innermost human capital, which we need to develop. Kwankwaso believes in this. I do. We have synergy,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor also dismissed suggestions of a rift between him and Kwankwaso, insisting they remain united ahead of the January 2027 general election.

“I don’t know why people talk about differences between people who are working together. Have you ever seen us quarrelling?

“You see, people quarrel even in offices because of transactional governance. The country is in a mess because of transactional governance. I am not into transactional government. I am into transformational governance.

“We want to change the society and make it better. We want to pull people out of poverty, not the other way around,” he said.

Obi and Kwankwaso emerged third and fourth, respectively, in the 2023 presidential election, behind President Bola Tinubu of the APC and Vice President Atiku Abubakar, then of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Obi ran on the platform of the Labour Party, while Kwankwaso contested under the New Nigeria Peoples Party.

Both men and Atiku had earlier, in 2026, formed an alliance under the ADC before Obi and Kwankwaso defected to the NDC, citing internal crises and legal disputes.

Responding to a question on why their alliance did not materialise ahead of the 2023 election, Obi said he was focused on the future rather than the past.

“Those who think about yesterday and today will miss tomorrow. The past is gone. We are talking about the present,” he said.

On concerns about managing supporters of both the Obidient Movement and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Obi said both groups were united by a common desire for national transformation.

“We do not just have large followers alone. People are gravitating to what is right. How are we going to manage them? We have no problem whatsoever. We want to change the society. Our followers want a changed and better society,” he added.

“We are currently in the preparatory stages for a major national struggle for a comprehensive review of the national minimum wage.

“However, let me state unequivocally that it is no longer acceptable to discuss the welfare of workers without also discussing the welfare of those who have completed their active years of service,” he said.

Imo govt restates commitment to ending HIV as public health threat

Imo State Government has restated its commitment towards supporting evidence-based interventions that will accelerate progress towards ending HIV as a public health threat.

This commitment was restated by the state Deputy Governor, Lady Dr. Chinyere Ekomaru in her keynote address  at the Stakeholders’ Meeting for the Validation and Dissemination of the Imo State HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan (SSP)2025-2027, yesterday, at the Newton Hotel, Owerri.

She commended the Imo State Agency for the Control of AIDS, (IMSACA), the Ministry of Health, development partners and all contributors who invested their expertise and resources in developing the comprehensive Strategic Plan, saying their dedication reflects the shared vision of Imo State government for a state free from the burden of HIV/AIDS.

Lady Ekomaru added that the Strategic Plan aligns with the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Framework and the global commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3, which seeks to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all.

“As we disseminate this Strategic Plan, I encourage every stakeholder to embrace a shared sense of responsibility. Government alone cannot achieve the desired outcomes. Success will depend on active collaboration among all stakeholders.

“As we advance this roadmap, I call on stakeholders to pay special attention to strengthening prevention strategies, expanding HIV testing services, ensuring uninterrupted access to antiretroviral therapy, protecting vulnerable populations, promoting gender equality and addressing stigma, which continues to hinder access to essential healthcare services.

“As we move from planning to implementation, let us remain united in purpose, accountable in our actions and steadfast in our commitment to safeguarding the health and future of our people”, Lady Ekomaru requested.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Director General, Imo State Agency for the Control of AIDS (IMSACA), Dr. Chidimma Okoro said the event marks another significant milestone in  the state’s collective journey towards ending HIV as a public health threat.

She said the State’s Strategic Plan is more than just a policy document, but a shared roadmap for coordinating HIV prevention, treatment, care, support and the protection of the rights of people living with HIV across Imo State.

“This meeting provides us with an opportunity to critically review the document, validate its content and ensure that it truly reflects the realities, priorities and aspirations of our State. The success of this Strategic Plan will depend, not only on the quality of the document, but also on the commitment of every stakeholder to its implementation.

She expressed profound appreciation to the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NAÇA), for its technical and financial support in the development of the Strategic Plan, while also extending the appreciation to all  development partners, civil society organizations, implementing partners, and every stakeholder whose contributions  made the event possible.

Delivering a goodwill message, Imo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Chioma Vivian Egu described the event as a call to action for; Government, Development partners, Healthcare providers, Civil Society Organisations, Community leaders and the Private sector

Also delivering a goodwill message, the Executive Secretary, Imo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Miss Kosilisochukwu Ekenjoku said her agency recognises the fact that the fight against HIV/AIDS cannot be won in isolation.

She said with the recognition of the fact that primary health facilities are the first point of contact for majority of patients, her agency stands ready to collaborate with Imo SACA in the implementation of the plans geared towards eradicating HIV/AIDS in the state.

Making a remark, on behalf of Imo State Elders Council and the Traditional Institution, the traditional ruler of Isiama Autonomous Community, Isiala Mbano LGA, Eze Oliver Ohanwe promised to relay the message to both the Chairman, Imo State Elders Council and Chairman, Imo State Traditional Institution and Community Policing, so they could mandate their members to disseminate the information to their subjects in the rural areas and implement  actions geared towards making Imo HIV/AIDS free.

Highpoint of the event which featured lectures and plenary session was the adoption of the validated Imo State HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan report.

The Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Hospitality and Culture, Imo State, Rt. Hon. Barr. Ernest Ibejiako, has received members of the newly constituted Interim Management Committee of the Nigeria Hotel Association (NHA), Imo State Chapter, and reaffirmed the commitment of the Imo State Government to support the Association in its efforts to reposition the hospitality industry for sustainable growth and development.

The assurance was given when the Interim Management Committee, led by its Chairman, Chief Stanley Ohiri, paid the Commissioner a courtesy visit in his office.

Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Ibejiako stated that His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, CON, Executive Governor of Imo State, remains committed to transforming the tourism and hospitality sector into a major driver of economic growth. He noted that the ongoing upgrade of the Imo Concorde Hotel to international standards has set a benchmark for excellence, which other hospitality establishments in the state are encouraged to emulate.

The Commissioner expressed satisfaction that the prolonged leadership crisis within the association had finally been resolved through the intervention of the Ministry. He observed that the formal presentation of the Association’s By-Law, duly adopted and signed on 7 July 2026, marked the beginning of a new era of unity, stability and purposeful leadership within the Association.

He reminded the Interim Management Committee of the critical responsibilities ahead, including the classification and standardization of hotels across the state, the extension of Orashi electricity to hospitality establishments, improved waste management, advocacy for better road infrastructure, and the promotion of quality service delivery within the industry. He stressed that close collaboration between the Ministry and the Association would be essential in achieving these objectives.

Hon. Ibejiako further urged the Committee to commence preparations for the conduct of credible, transparent and democratic elections that would usher in a substantive Executive Committee capable of providing stable and effective leadership for the Association.

ADC Crisis: We didn’t issue access code to Nafiu Gombe faction – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has denied issuing any access code to the Nafiu Gombe faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting that the portal code for the party’s candidate nominations was granted exclusively to the Sen. David Mark-led leadership.

National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee at INEC, Mallam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, told our Correspondent yesterday amid escalating confusion within the ADC over which faction is authorised to upload candidates for the 2027 General Elections.

He said the commission’s records were unambiguous on the matter, noting that the Mark faction had already been cleared and had acted on that clearance well before a Monday appellate court judgment nullified the group’s state congresses.

“We never issued any access code to the Nafiu Gombe faction. Before the Court of Appeal judgement we had already issued the code to the Sen. Mark faction and they had submitted over 400 names and particulars of their candidates for the national level elections, including the president and his running mate,” Haruna told our Correspondent.

Gombe had, in a statement dated July 12, 2026, claimed to have successfully uploaded candidates for the presidential and National Assembly elections under his leadership.

“The African Democratic Congress, (ADC), under my leadership, has successfully completed the upload of our Presidential, Vice-Presidential, and National Assembly candidates on the INEC portal for the 2027 General Elections.

“This achievement demonstrates our Party’s firm commitment to safeguarding the interests of our founding and legacy members in the face of anti-democratic tendencies. As a Party, the ADC remains resolute in its mission to field credible, competent, and people-centered candidates who will provide purposeful leadership, promote good governance, and bring hope to the Nigerian people”, he said.

The ADC under Mark had accused the Gombe-led group of using forged documents purportedly issued by INEC to falsely claim it had uploaded the names of a presidential candidate and other nominees to the commission’s nomination portal.

The party asked INEC to investigate what it described as forgery and unauthorised use of official documents, warning that the development was capable of creating confusion and undermining public confidence in the electoral body.

Presidential candidate of the ADC, Atiku Abubakar, had also criticised INEC over the episode, accusing the commission of allowing the Gombe faction to upload candidates in violation of its own guidelines.

“On 11 July 2026, Nafiu Bala Gombe who parades himself as National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress ADC issued a statement that he has succeeded in uploading the names of his candidates on the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.

“The uploading of the names of candidates on INEC portal is part of the process of the 2027 General Elections made possible by the granting of access codes to  political parties in line with the umpire’s guidelines. Meanwhile, INEC has been mum, and has not denied or confirmed this obvious contradiction to the law and its own guidelines. Politicsnews alerts

“By granting access code to Bala Gombe, a pretender, laying claims to the chairmanship of the ADC, though the law is not on his side and INEC has since validated the chairmanship of the Sen. David Mark-led exco, the electoral umpire is once again manifesting its partisanship. This was the same thing that the Prof Joash Amupitan-led INEC did when it illegally removed the names of the duly recognised ADC exco following the judicial rascality of Justice Lifu in ignoring a superior ruling of an appellate court”, Atiku had said.

Atiku demands probe of Gbajabiamila over fresh corruption allegations

The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has called for an independent investigation into fresh corruption allegations against President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.

In a statement issued by the Atiku Media Office and shared by Paul Ibe on X yesterday, the former vice president said the allegations were too serious to be ignored.

The former Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), presidential candidate, insisted that public officials should be held accountable regardless of their position.

His reaction followed a report by Peoples Gazette alleging that Gbajabiamila illegally diverted oil and gas royalties from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission through a purportedly unlawful presidential approval.

It was reported that Gbajabiamila has not publicly responded to the allegations.

According to Atiku, the matter transcends politics and should be addressed in the interest of accountability.

“This issue goes beyond partisan politics; it’s about the impunity of corruption that undermines the welfare and future of ordinary Nigerians,” he said.

The former vice president accused the Federal Government of applying different standards in its anti-corruption campaign.

“This level of corruption is unprecedented, and the government can’t pretend to be prosecuting opposition figures for corruption, while corruption is growing like weeds under its own nose,” he said.

Atiku argued that the Chief of Staff should be subjected to the same standards as other public officials facing corruption allegations.

“You can’t preach the rule of law when your own officials are awarded with the trophy of untouchability,” he said.

He added, “Gbajabiamila must be held accountable like every other public official and independently investigated to give him a full opportunity to defend himself against the brazen act of corruption as detailed in the Gazette report.”

The ADC presidential candidate also cited the suspension of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, under the Muhammadu Buhari administration as a precedent.

“Former President Buhari suspended his SGF, Babachir Lawal, from office to allow for an unfettered investigation, and Gbajabiamila shouldn’t be treated differently,” he said.

Atiku further alleged that the Tinubu administration had failed to respond adequately to allegations involving senior government officials.

He said, “Given the apathetic and lackadaisical attitude of the Tinubu administration to the gale of corruption scandals against the Chief of Staff, it’s apparent that the government is just going through the motions to fool Nigerians.

He added, “Democracy is public service, and when political office holders prioritise the amassing of personal wealth while ordinary people are dying of hunger and preventable diseases, the Tinubu administration cannot pretend to be serving the people.”

Gbajabiamila has not publicly commented on the allegations contained in the Peoples Gazette report, and the claims have not been independently verified.

Court voids FG’s eight-year retirement policy for education directors

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has voided the Federal Government’s policy requiring education directors to retire after spending eight years in office, ruling that teachers and education officers who become directors are entitled to remain in service until they attain 65 years of age or complete 40 years of pensionable service.

Delivering judgment in Abuja on July 10, 2026, Justice O. Y. Anuwe nullified circulars issued by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Education seeking to enforce the eight-year tenure rule against teachers and education officers serving as directors.

According to the CTC obtained by our correspondent yesterday, the court held that the circulars were inconsistent with the provisions of the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act, 2022, and were therefore invalid to the extent that they applied to teachers and education officers.

“A Teacher or Education Officer, whether he or she got to the post of Director or not, is entitled to retire from service on attaining 65 years of age or 40 years of service,” Justice Anuwe held.

The Judge added that serving as a director for eight years “is not a retirement condition for teachers any longer.”

The suit, marked NICN/ABJ/79/2025, was instituted by Mrs Rakiya Gambo Iliyasu, a Grade Level 17 Director in the University Education Department of the Federal Ministry of Education, who challenged directives requiring directors who had spent eight years in office to retire.

Iliyasu argued that as an Education Officer, she qualified as a teacher under the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act, 2022, which guarantees compulsory retirement only at the age of 65 years or after 40 years of pensionable service.

She contended that the February 2026 circulars issued by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Education unlawfully sought to compel her and other education directors to retire before reaching the statutory retirement age.

Agreeing with the claimant, Justice Anuwe held that Section 3 of the Teachers’ Retirement Age Act expressly exempts teachers from any Public Service Rule requiring retirement before the age of 65 years or 40 years of pensionable service. The judge also relied on the Act’s definition of a teacher, which expressly includes Education Officers, holding that the claimant fell squarely within the category of officers protected by the law.

The court further observed that the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation had, in an earlier 2025 correspondence, acknowledged that education officers covered by the Act were exempt from the eight-year tenure policy, making the government’s subsequent issuance of retirement directives inconsistent with its earlier position.

Consequently, the court declared the February 10, 2026 circular issued by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the February 24 and February 26, 2026 circulars issued by the Federal Ministry of Education illegal, null and void insofar as they applied to teachers and education officers.

Justice Anuwe also, set aside the three circulars and granted a perpetual injunction restraining the Federal Government and the Ministry of Education from implementing the eight-year tenure policy against teachers and education officers in a manner inconsistent with the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act. Each party was ordered to bear its own costs.

The dispute arose after the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Education issued circulars in February 2026 directing that directors who had spent eight years in office should retire in line with Rule 020909 of the Public Service Rules.

The directives affected several directors in the Federal Ministry of Education who are career education officers, despite the enactment of the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act, 2022, which extended the retirement age of teachers in public educational institutions to 65 years or 40 years of pensionable service.

The 2022 Act was signed into law to address the shortage of experienced teachers, improve retention of skilled education personnel and strengthen the quality of teaching and learning in Nigeria.

It also broadened the definition of teachers to include education officers, a provision that became central to the legal dispute.

The judgment is expected to have significant implications for director-level education officers across the Federal Ministry of Education and other education-related federal agencies, as it clarifies that the provisions of the Teachers’ Retirement Age Act override the eight-year tenure rule in the Public Service Rules for officers protected under the law.

Reason I may not run for president after 2027 – Obi

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said he is unlikely to contest the presidency after the 2027 general election.

Speaking in an interview, our Correspondent, the former Anambra State governor said his decision is linked to Nigeria’s informal zoning arrangement, which rotates the presidency between the North and the South.

“For me, it depends on what happens. I don’t want to say it because people might think that I’m saying it because of some people,” Obi said.

He recalled answering a similar question from a secondary school student, explaining that if he does not become president in 2027, the presidency is expected to shift to the North in 2031.

“I said because if I don’t run now, by the next time it comes, believing in the zoning formula, it will go to the North,” he said.

“If it goes North in 2031, by the time it comes again to the South, I will be 78 years old, and I don’t think I would be doing this at that age.”

He said he could only consider another presidential bid if the presidency remained in the South in 2031, but stressed that such a scenario is unlikely.

“If it’s still in the South in the next election, maybe, but the probability is very slim. I don’t know until after the 2027 election,” he said.

Fake PFIPC DG, Adeniyi Adeyemi arrested

The self-acclaimed Director-General of the non-existent Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, (PFIPC), Adeniyi Adeyemi, has been arrested.

According to newsmen, his arrest came moments after Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a warrant for his arrest.

Adeyemi was billed to take his plea on an eight-count charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/562/2025, relating to forgery, fraud, and impersonation.

Although the matter was listed as No. 12 on the court’s cause list, the defendant failed to appear for his arraignment, even though a lawyer, Mr. Genesis Francis, announced his appearance on his behalf.

Meanwhile, the self-acclaimed Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, (PFIPC), Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, failed to appear in court yesterday for his arraignment over alleged certificate forgery.

Adeyemi is billed to take his plea before Justice Mohammed Umar on an eight-count charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/562/2025, which relates to forgery, fraud and impersonation.

Although the matter is listed as No. 12 on the court’s cause list, the defendant is nowhere to be seen.

The charge against Adeyemi and two other defendants was filed on November 27, 2025, by a police prosecutor, Wisdom Madaki.

Witnesses billed to testify in the matter include: the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, Paul Emmanuel, Jeremiah Imoukhede and Ituah Sylvester.

Others are: civil servants working in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, OAGF, Akimbo Shola and Adamu Balongu, as well as a deputy superintendent of police.

It would be recalled that the self-acclaimed Director-General, whose whereabouts remain unknown, said in an interview on Channels Television on Monday that his withdrawal from public view was due to alleged threats to his life.

He also dismissed the insinuation that he was hiding from law enforcement agencies in a bid to evade investigation into his involvement in the alleged PFIPC fraud.

Adeyemi equally maintained his allegation that he paid N400 million through a proxy to President Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Gbajabiamila, to secure his appointment as DG of the disputed agency.

He claimed that those from whom he borrowed the N400 million he used to secure the appointment had since dragged him before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Hon. Chukwuma said that the allegation was aimed at tarnishing the image of the Rector,Prof Stephen Chukwuka and the Institution.

“As an  organization that stand for equity  fairness, advocate for transparency, accountability, and the advancement of tertiary education in Imo State, we wish to express our deep disappointment over the recent publication containing a litany of allegations against the Management of Imo State Polytechnic, Omuma”.

Chukwuma noted that IEF has investigated the  allegation and they are convinced that the allegations are unfounded, misleading, and calculated to undermine the remarkable progress recorded by the present administration of the Polytechnic led by Prof Chukwuka.

He made it clear that one of the remarkable  achievements of the current Management is the successful accreditation of the Polytechnic’s academic programmes, which culminated in a 100% accreditation success rate.

“This achievement was not accidental but the product of meticulous planning, prudent management of resources, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence. It stands today as a landmark accomplishment that has restored confidence in the institution and enhanced its reputation within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.”

He pointed out that Imo Equity Forum  found out that the engagement and appointment of the Acting Bursar followed the appropriate procedures and reflected merit, competence, professionalism, and integrity.

Slain Oyo teacher’s family writes Tinubu, seeks recovery of body

The family of Michael Oyedokun, one of the two teachers killed during the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to help recover his remains, saying they need closure after his death in captivity.

The appeal was contained in an open letter jointly signed by the Oyedokun family and addressed to the President yesterday.

In the letter, the family thanked Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers after nearly two months in captivity.

However, the family said its pain remains because Oyedokun’s body has not been recovered.

“We sincerely thank Your Excellency for the efforts of the Federal Government, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security and intelligence agencies whose dedication and sacrifice led to the successful rescue of the kidnapped victims in Oyo State.

“The safe return of these victims has restored hope to their families and reaffirmed our confidence in the Government’s commitment to protecting the lives and liberty of its citizens. For this, we are deeply grateful,” the letter read.

The family said that while many families had been reunited with their loved ones, theirs was still mourning because Oyedokun’s remains had not been found.

“Our beloved relative, Mr. Michael Olugbade Oyedokun, tragically lost his life while in captivity. Although the rescue operation was successful, his remains have yet to be recovered and returned to us for a dignified burial in accordance with our faith, traditions, and values.

“The absence of his body has prolonged our grief and denied our family the closure that every human being deserves. We continue to live with the pain of not knowing where he rests, unable to perform the final rites that would honour his memory and bring peace to our hearts,” the family stated.

The family appealed to Tinubu to direct security agencies to intensify efforts to locate and recover the slain teacher’s remains.

“Your Excellency, we respectfully appeal that you direct the relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to locate and recover the remains of Mr. Michael Olugbade Oyedokun.

“We are confident that the same resolve which secured the freedom of the surviving victims can also ensure that his body is returned to his family.”

The family said recovering Oyedokun’s remains would allow them to give him a proper burial and begin the healing process.

“Recovering his remains is more than a humanitarian act; it is a solemn obligation that reflects the dignity of every Nigerian life. It would demonstrate that no citizen is forgotten, abandoned, or denied dignity, even in death.

“We earnestly hope this appeal will receive your compassionate and urgent consideration, so that we may finally lay our beloved husband, father, brother, and son to rest with the honour and dignity he deserves, and begin the difficult journey toward healing,” the letter added.

Nnaji pleads not guilty to Certificate forgery charges

Former Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has been arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges of certificate forgery.

He was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.

Nnaji pleaded not guilty to six certificate forgery charges filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), against him.

In the charges, ICPC alleged that Nnaji, who was a minister in President Bola Tinubu’s administration from 16 August 2023 to 6 October 2025, forged his academic certificate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

After he pleaded not guilty to the charges, and following the application by the defence team led by Chief James Onoja, SAN, the court admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N20 million, with one surety in the like sum.

The court said the surety must be a civil servant resident in Abuja who must not be below grade level 15.

Aside from mandating the surety to depose to an affidavit of means, the court ordered the defendant to surrender his international passport and not travel outside the country without permission.

 

Meanwhile, during the arraignment, a group numbering more than 300 stormed the court to demand accountability and the enforcement of the rule of law.

The group, Global Gender Safety and Moral Development, said public office demands honesty, accountability and respect for the rule of law.

The anti-corruption agency alleged that Nnaji, who served in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet from 16 August 2023 to 6 October 2025 before resigning, forged his academic credentials, including a degree certificate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

The former Minister was charged with six counts of forgery of a UNN degree certificate and a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate, both allegedly submitted during his ministerial screening in 2023.

The charges also include allegations that he received about N29.5 million in salary and emoluments under false pretences, as well as money laundering.

After the not-guilty plea, the prosecutor told the court that he was ready for trial, with three witnesses already in the courtroom.

Nnaji’s lawyer, Ogwu Onoja, SAN, asked Nnaji and drew the court’s attention to a bail application filed by. The prosecutor did not oppose the application.

In a short ruling, the judge granted Nnaji bail in the sum of N20 million, with one surety who must not be below Grade Level 15 in the federal civil service and reside in Abuja. The surety is required to depose to an affidavit of means.

Nnaji was also ordered to deposit his official and personal passports and not to travel outside the country without the court’s permission.

Nnaji’s arraignment followed investigations into the authenticity of his academic documents.

Both UNN and the NYSC have reportedly disowned the certificates in question.

 

Nigerians will never forget Buhari’s service — Tinubu

Eminent Nigerians on Monday paid glowing tribute to late former President Muhammadu Buhari, on the occasion of his one-year remembrance held in Abuja.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was Special Guest of Honour, described his late predecessor as a leader Nigerians are not capable of forgetting because of his years of service to the nation.

Tinubu, who recalled the uncertain days of the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its progression from the main opposition party to the ruling party, told the gathering that he and the late president were “co-travellers on the long road of politics and national development.”

“We worked together through seasons of difficulty and seasons of hope. We shared a deep and abiding passion for a renewed, progressive, and prosperous Nigeria—a nation held together by brotherhood, settled in peace, and generous in abundance so that no citizen is left outside the circle of its promise.

“He gave everything he had to this country, and he gave it without reservation. He served with courage. He served with conviction and with a patriotism that never asked what the nation could return to him.

“From his years as a military leader to his transformation into a democrat and a determined defender of constitutional order, he embodied the very spirit of change and nation-building.”

Tinubu, represented by his deputy, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, declared that the best way to honour the late Buhari is to “carry forward the inheritance he left us: honesty, simplicity, and self-discipline.”

He further maintained that every ardent supporter, friend and family member of the former president must continue to strive, in their individual conduct, “to approach the standard he kept. That is the only tribute worthy of him, and it is one he would have asked for.”

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, faulted the narrative that the former president only favoured the North during his eight-year stewardship.

Gowon maintained that Buhari did his best for Nigeria and ensured that every section of the country was fairly treated.

He said: “I would like to say that President Buhari did his best for Nigeria. His sense of integrity and fairness knew no bounds…

“He cared for people. During his time in office, he worked for all Nigerians, not just for the North. Some people believed he governed only for the North, but that was not the case. He ensured that every state and every part of the country was treated fairly and equally. That remains to his credit.

“I want to thank all of you for coming to this first anniversary in remembrance of President Muhammadu Buhari and for honouring his years of dedicated service and sacrifice to Nigeria.”

Reminiscing on the APC presidential convention in 2022, where the incumbent, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emerged as the party’s presidential candidate, General Gowon recalled that it was merely a pay-back period for Tinubu, as the late Buhari gave support to his successor, who had stood by him to secure the APC ticket in 2014.

He said: “As President Buhari prepared to leave office, he gave his full support to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to succeed him as President. I remember clearly how committed President Buhari was to ensuring that Tinubu received the same support that Tinubu had given him during his own presidential journey.

“This is something for which we must give President Buhari credit. He stood firmly behind President Tinubu so that he could continue serving Nigeria and do his best for the country, just as Buhari himself sought to do.”

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman, Central Planning Committee of the occasion, Boss Mustapha, described the event as “an occasion to reflect on a life of service and to preserve for future generations the memory of a man who devoted much of his adult life to the service of Nigeria.

“His passing came as a profound shock to the nation and elicited an extraordinary outpouring of grief across Nigeria, Africa, and many parts of the world…

“We remember a leader whose convictions shaped the decisions he took, whose sense of duty remained unwavering, and whose commitment to the Nigerian state defined his years in public service.”

In attendance were the late president’s wife, Aisha Buhari, and serving governors of Lagos, Ogun, Borno and Kwara states.

Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, was represented by his deputy, Malam Faruk Lawal Jobe.

Traditional rulers who graced the occasion included the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; the Emir of Katsina, His Royal Highness Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman; and the Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, among other dignitaries.

Tinubu sends state police bill to Reps for constitutional approval

President Bola Tinubu has transmitted the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026, to the House of Representatives, seeking constitutional approval for the establishment of state police services across the country. ExecutiveBranch

In a letter read on the floor of the House yesterday, Tinubu said the proposed legislation seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to provide the legal framework for the creation of state police as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

The president said the bill builds on previous legislative work by the House and introduces additional safeguards to ensure the effective operation of a dual policing system involving both the federal and state governments.

“I am delighted to present to the House of Representatives for consideration the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026, which seeks to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to create a constitutional pathway for the establishment of State Police Services,” he stated. According to Tinubu, the proposed framework is aimed at addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges through a more responsive and efficient policing structure.

“This Bill builds on the significant work already done in this regard by the House of Representatives and incorporates additional safeguards to ensure that the creation of a dual policing structure to address our nation’s evolving national security challenges can be achieved quickly and effectively to the benefit of all Nigerians,” he said.

Describing the bill as a key component of his administration’s security reform agenda, the President urged lawmakers to expedite its consideration and passage.

“The proposed legislation is a critical component of our administration’s strategy to reorganise Nigeria’s security architecture to better protect our citizens, and I am confident that the House of Representatives will act quickly to consider and pass this Bill,” Tinubu added.

The latest move comes barely two weeks after the Senate passed a similar constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of state police across the federation.

The Senate approved the proposal after it secured the support of more than two-thirds of lawmakers, meeting the constitutional requirement for amending the 1999 Constitution.

If passed by the House of Representatives and subsequently endorsed by the required number of state Houses of Assembly, the bill would pave the way for the establishment of state police services as part of efforts to tackle growing insecurity across the country.

Abia court sentences two men to 10, 30 years imprisonment for defiling minors

An Abia State High Court has sentenced a 35-year-old man to 10 years imprisonment for defiling a 5-year-old girl. In a separate ruling, the court also sentenced a 32-year-old man to 30 years imprisonment for defiling a 13-year-old girl.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this at the Government House, Umuahia, on Monday, July 13, 2026, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Speaking, the Commissioner said the two cases of rape were decided on the same day they were called up for hearing on July 9, 2026. He said the cases were facilitated through the Abia State Government’s recently launched NCHEDO Sexual Assault Referral Centre.

The Commissioner noted that both defendants pleaded guilty to the crime, making it one of the fastest concluded rape cases in the country as they were sentenced on the same day they appeared in court after pleading guilty to the offence.

He described the judgments as landmark convictions that indicate the current administration has zero tolerance for sexual assault against the girl child and women. He added that the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection has continued implementing the state’s framework for access to social protection support through the identification, assessment, and coordination of assistance for vulnerable citizens requiring urgent medical and humanitarian support.

Prince Kanu further disclosed that the state government visited the family of Late Wendy Achumba, an indigene of Obingwa LGA and a nursing student who was reportedly raped and killed in her residence in Imo State. He said government was fully represented at her burial and also supported the family. He added that the state government will monitor the court case of the suspect.

The Information Commissioner also revealed that the State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, in partnership with Dreamland Football Academy, recently organised the second edition of the Abia State Dreamland Under-19 Cup Tournament, where six outstanding young footballers were scouted by foreign football partners for professional careers in Europe.

He also revealed that the State volleyball team has returned to the Nigerian Volleyball Premier League after 23 years of relegation and recorded an impressive performance during the first phase of the league in Abuja. Preparations are underway for the second phase in Lagos.

The Commissioner further noted that Abia Angels Football Club, the state’s female football team, has qualified for the Nigerian Women’s Football League Super Six for the first time in its history. He described the feat as a major milestone for women’s football in the state, adding that the team is currently being strengthened ahead of the 2026/2027 league season.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonna, advised Abians and residents to be cautious about what they eat to avoid food poisoning. He said proper food preparation and refrigeration are very important to avoid contamination.

Speaking further on the rape cases, the Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs. Blessing Ngozi Felix, reiterated that the NCHEDO Sexual Assault Referral Centre was launched on February 18, 2026, to provide access to justice and psychosocial support, among others, for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence in Abia.

The Commissioner disclosed that in the case of the 35-year-old man who defiled a 5-year-old child, the suspect absconded to Nasarawa State after committing the crime and was later arrested by the police and brought back to Abia State to face trial.

“The case was called up on July 9, 2026, and on that same day, he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment after he confessed to the crime,” she said.

“Under this administration, the government is very serious and has zero tolerance for any form of sexual and gender-based abuse against vulnerable citizens.

“I hereby warn sexual offenders: we have a sex offenders register at the Ministry of Justice for the naming and shaming of sexual offenders. If caught and convicted, their names are put there. This register serves as a deterrent to potential offenders in the future,” Mrs. Felix stated.

Man beats wife to death over food

A 30-year-old man, Musbawu Amodu, has been arrested by the Nasarawa State Police Command for allegedly beating his 20-year-old wife to death during a domestic dispute reportedly triggered by her refusal to prepare food.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, disclosed the development in a statement, saying the tragic incident occurred on Sunday at Angwan Yahaya, Agyaragu, in Obi Local Government Area of the state.

According to Nansel, the couple, who had been married for six years, has two children—a boy and a girl.

He said the incident was reported to the Agyaragu Police Division at about 12:30 p.m., with information that the suspect had allegedly assaulted his wife, resulting in her death.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilised patrol personnel to the scene, where the victim was evacuated to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lafia, for medical examination and preservation,” the police spokesperson stated.

Nansel disclosed that Amodu was arrested shortly after the incident and allegedly confessed during interrogation that he attacked his wife in anger after she refused to prepare a meal.

He explained that the disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation that ultimately claimed the woman’s life.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Mohammed, ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Lafia, for a thorough and expedited investigation.

The police commissioner assured residents that justice would be served, stressing that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Mohammed strongly condemned the killing, describing it as both tragic and avoidable.

He urged couples and family members to embrace dialogue, patience and lawful means of resolving domestic disputes, emphasizing that “no misunderstanding is worth the loss of a human life.”

The command also reassured residents that Agyaragu and its surrounding communities remain calm and under control, adding that security personnel are monitoring the situation.
