Senate to screen Amupitan for INEC chairman appointment Wednesday

Barring any last-minute changes, the Senate will today screen and confirm Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This follows a request from President Bola Tinubu, who yesterday transmitted a letter to the Senate seeking legislative approval for Amupitan’s appointment.

The letter, read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary, urged the Senate to consider and confirm the nomination “in its usual expeditious manner.”

President Tinubu’s letter partly reads, “Pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission. Attached is his curriculum vitae. While hoping that the Senate will consider and confirm the appointment of the nominee in his usual expeditious manner, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

The Council of State had last week approved Amupitan’s appointment to replace Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose two-term tenure as INEC chairman had elapsed.

Following the reading of the letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for further legislative action.

The screening exercise is expected to take place today and will be broadcast live during the Senate’s plenary session.

Trump, world leaders sign Gaza peace deal after Hamas frees all living hostages

World leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump and Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi pose for a family photo, at a world leaders' summit on ending the Gaza war, amid a U.S.-brokered prisoner-hostage swap and ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, October 13, 2025. Hamas has released all 20 of the remaining living Israeli hostages, who are now being reunited with their families in Israel, as part of President Trump’s peace plan to end the war in Gaza. Israeli officials said the remains of 28 slain hostages are still in Gaza.

President Trump delivered remarks in the Israeli Knesset, the country’s parliament, after arriving in the country yesterday and being greeted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel is expected to release some 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, of whom 250 are serving life sentences and about 1,700 others who have been detained since the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack, in exchange for the release of the Israeli hostages.

A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect at noon local time on Friday and Israel completed a pullback of its military troops to a pre-approved line in the Palestinian territory.

Aid began flowing back into Gaza as hundreds of thousands of Palestinians returned to northern Gaza, many returning to homes reduced to rubble.

Meanwhile, Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced he’s awarding President Trump his state’s highest civilian honour, the Order of the Nile, for strengthening U.S.-Egypt relations and for his efforts to restore peace in the region.

“I’m deeply honoured to receive from you Egypt’s highest state honor, the Order of the Nile,” Mr. Trump responded. “The Nile is so beautiful, so magnificent.”

Hamas releases all 20 remaining living hostages as part of Gaza ceasefire

Hamas released all 20 remaining living hostages held in Gaza yesterday, as part of a ceasefire pausing two years of war that pummeled the territory, killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, and had left scores of captives in militant hands.

Seven of the hostages were released early morning, while the remaining 13 were freed a few hours later.

The 20, all men, were being reunited with their families and expected to undergo medical checks.

The bodies of the remaining 28 dead hostages are also expected to be handed over as part of the deal, although the exact timing remained unclear.

Families and friends of the hostages who gathered in a square in Tel Aviv broke into wild cheers as Israeli television channels announced that the first group of hostages was in the hands of the Red Cross. Tens of thousands of Israelis watched the transfers at public screenings across the country.

Israel released the first photos of hostages arriving home, including one showing 28-year-old twins Gali and Ziv Berman embracing as they were reunited. Hostages previously released had said the twins from Kfar Aza were held separately.

The photos of the first seven hostages released Monday showed them looking pale but less gaunt than some of the hostages freed in January.

Palestinians, meanwhile, awaited the release of hundreds of prisoners held by Israel. In the West Bank, an armored vehicle flying an Israeli flag fired tear gas and rubber bullets at a crowd waiting near Ofer Prison. As drones buzzed overhead, the group scattered.

The tear gas followed the circulation of a flier warning that anyone supporting what it called “terrorist organizations” risked arrest. Israel’s military did not respond to questions about the flier, which The Associated Press obtained on site.

While major questions remain about the future of Hamas and Gaza, the exchange of hostages and prisoners raised hopes for ending the deadliest war ever between Israel and the militant group.

The ceasefire is also expected to be accompanied by a surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza, parts of which are experiencing famine.

U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in the region, where he plans to discuss the U.S.-proposed deal and postwar plans with other leaders.

The war began when Hamas-led militants launched a surprise attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, in which some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed and 251 taken hostage.

In Israel’s ensuing offensive, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants but says around half the dead were women and children. The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government, and the U.N. and many independent experts consider its figures to be the most reliable estimate of wartime casualties.

The toll is expected to grow as bodies are pulled from rubble previously made inaccessible by fighting.

The war has destroyed large swaths of Gaza and displaced about 90% of its some 2 million residents. It has also triggered other conflicts in the region, sparked worldwide protests and led to allegations of genocide that Israel denies.

“Much of Gaza is a wasteland,” U.N. humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher told the AP on Sunday.

Living hostages being released first

The hostages’ return caps a painful chapter for Israel. Since they were captured in the attack that ignited the war, newscasts have marked their days in captivity and Israelis have worn yellow pins and ribbons in solidarity. Tens of thousands have joined their families in weekly demonstrations calling for their release.

” I am glad that the Uzodimma 3-R mantra administration since it’s inception some six years ago,  has always, been at the forefront of youths and human capital development. The implication is that Imo youths are being repositioned to play leading roles in the economy of this great nation in the near future”, Chike Olemgbe stated

The Imo assembly Speaker who also represents Ihitte-Uboma state constituency in the 10th house of Imo state apex legislative assembly, strictly cautioned Imo youths to put the knowledge and skills acquired under the watch of Governor Uzodimma to use in order to repeat the inherent benefits fully.

Uzodimma advocates constitutional roles for traditional rulers

Imo state Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma has canvassed  the constitutional formalisation of the roles of traditional rulers, to strengthen the institution for the diverse responsibilities before it.

He said the agitation by traditional rulers for constitutional recognition is not a privilege, but that of clarity for the role they are already playing for the stability of the communities and the nation at large.

The governor spoke in Lagos yesterday while presenting the keynote address at the meeting of the National Council of Traditional Rulers in Nigeria (NCTRN).

He noted that the theme of the meeting: THE TRADITIONAL INSTITUTION: THE IMPERATIVE OF ITS INCLUSION IN EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA, was not only  appropriate, timely and necessary, but reflects the reality that “traditional rulers across the country continue to carry out responsibilities that are essential to the stability, cohesion, and governance of our communities ”

Uzodimma said that such responsibilities, which are largely formal but acknowledged, should now have a legal backing in the constitution.

According to him, the absence of a constitutional role for traditional rulers is a gap that ought to be filled, saying it was a failure that should be immediately rectified.

Said he “I believe the time has come to make it right, and not necessarily by creating a new role, but by giving legal status to what already exists”

Uzodimma described the traditional institution as very unique in the architecture of power, attracting the best of the nation from politics, law, the military, and the academia.

He noted that given the enormous responsibility of the traditional rulers in peace mediation, conflict resolution, and custodians of tradition and culture, they ought to be more respected through a constitutional role.

He however urged them to remain non-partisan, to preserve their integrity, especially when it comes to politics.

Tracing their previous roles in the First Republic and comparing them to what currently obtains in some African countries, the Imo State Governor, totally supported their push for a more defined role in the constitution.

“I assure you that if this matter comes before the National Assembly or requires support at any level in government,  I will stand with you without hesitation,” he submitted.

He commended them for turning out in their large numbers from different parts of the country, for the meeting, declaring that the institution they represent ‘ is alive, strong and ready to lead where it must”.

He therefore advised people not to entertain any fear of distrust while taking  any WHO’s available vaccines in any emergency situation, stressing that they (vaccines) are safe.

Adeniyi re-emphasized  WHO’s regular readiness in  seeking the support of the traditional rulers, health workers, religious leaders and security personnel in creating a support system for the people of various  communities to strive to protect every available health infrastructure in their midst.

The state WHO’s Director’s representative  equally reaffirmed that the provided support system would easily encourage the vulnerable people, pregnant women, children, HIV patients, other disease sufferers and the elderly  to  have uninterrupted access to health care services during crises without becoming victims themselves.

Dr. Adeniyi opined that WHO has strongly been engaged in carrying an advocacy for the above four mentioned   stakeholders to come together in supporting immunization and vaccination campaigns so as to prevent any disease outbreaks.

He expressed delight for the choice of  aihwa Integrated medical Clinic for this year’s  World Mental Health  Day, owing to its identified major contributions in human mental health support and management in Imo state as overtly recognized by the state government,

In their own separate submissions during a brief chat with the media, the  two traditional rulers in attendance, HRH Eze Bannabas Obirieze and  HRH Eze Duru Nwokeke from Ngor-Okpala LGA appreciated the organized  seminar and promised to make use of the  obtained knowledge to influence their communities positively  in area of encouraging them to accept WHO’s powered  vaccination without any baise.

The  highpoint of the event was the presentation of a keynote address by Rev Fr. Kenny Udumka, Cssp, the president of AIHWA  International, with the title:  Stigmatization and Mental  Health Diagnostic Framework in Nigeria.

FCCPC backs CBN’s 48-hour refund rule for failed ATM transactions

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has commended the Central Bank of Nigeria’s proposed directive, which mandates banks to refund customers for failed Automated Teller Machine transactions within 48 hours.

In a statement yesterday signed by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, the Commission described the CBN’s Draft Guidelines on the Operations of Automated Teller Machines in Nigeria as a timely and long-awaited intervention that aligns with ongoing efforts to protect consumers in the financial services sector.

The draft guideline, released last week, follows the FCCPC’s Consumer Complaints Data Report published in September 2025, which revealed that the banking and fintech industries accounted for the largest volume of consumer complaints nationwide.

The statement read, “The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission welcomes the Central Bank of Nigeria’s draft guidelines requiring all banks to refund customers for failed Automated Teller Machine transactions within 48 hours.

“The exposure of the CBN’s Draft Guidelines on the Operations of Automated Teller Machines in Nigeria follows the FCCPC’s Consumer Complaints Data Report published in September 2025.

According to the report, more than 3,000 complaints were recorded against banks between March and August 2025, with the Commission facilitating the recovery of over N10bn for consumers across 30 sectors.

The findings highlighted recurring issues such as failed transactions, unauthorised deductions, and prolonged refund delays, the very challenges the new CBN policy seeks to resolve.

“The report, which covered the period from March to August 2025, showed that the banking and fintech sectors accounted for the highest number of complaints nationwide, over 3,000 cases in banking alone, with about ₦10 billion recovered for customers across 30 sectors. The findings highlighted recurring issues such as failed transactions, unauthorised deductions, and delayed refunds, all of which the CBN draft guidelines seek to address,” the statement added.

The Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, Tunji Bello, hailed the CBN’s move as “a timely and long-awaited correction to a persistent consumer challenge.”

“It is consistent with what the FCCPC has been advocating, given the volume of complaints we receive about failed transactions. We commend the CBN for this decisive step, which will ease the burden on consumers and rebuild trust in financial services,” Bello said. He added that the initiative demonstrates improved coordination among regulatory agencies committed to consumer welfare, even at the draft stage.

The FCCPC further noted that the CBN’s proposed directive aligns with several provisions of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018, particularly Sections 17(g), (h), (l), (s), and (t).

These sections empower the Commission to eliminate unfair practices, promote fair dealings, ensure the resolution of consumer complaints, safeguard consumer interests, and maintain the safety and reliability of goods and services offered in Nigeria.

Tinubu grants clemency to Army major jailed for selling weapons to militants

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted clemency to Major Suleiman Alabi Akubo, a Nigerian Army officer who was sentenced to life imprisonment for selling over 7,000 stolen military weapons to Niger Delta militants.

Akubo, now 62, was among 175 people who recently received a presidential pardon and other forms of clemency approved by the National Council of State.

According to Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, Tinubu reduced Akubo’s sentence from life imprisonment to 20 years, citing the officer’s “good conduct and remorse.”

Akubo was convicted in 2008 by a military court in Kaduna alongside five other soldiers for selling weapons from the army’s depots at the Command and Staff College, Jaji, and the One Base Ordnance, Kaduna. The weapons — including assault rifles, submachine guns, and rocket-propelled grenades — were sold to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).

The stolen arms were valued at about ₦100m at the time. The trial judge, Bala Usara, noted that the buyers included Sunny Okah, brother of MEND leader Henry Okah.

In 2016, MEND claimed that the federal government had agreed to review Akubo’s and others’ life sentences under the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

Court fixes November 14 for judgment on anti-emergency rule suit

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has fixed November 14, 2025, to deliver judgment in a suit filed by a civil society organization, Initiative for Freedom, Conflict Prevention and Social Integration, FREECON, challenging the legality of President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State.

Other defendants in the suit include the Attorney General of the Federation, the former Sole Administrator of Rivers State, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, and its Chairman, as well as the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, which was later joined in the matter.

Members of FREECON are asking the court to determine whether, by the combined reading and interpretation of Sections 197 and 198 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), the President can, under any guise or circumstance, create or appoint a Sole Administrator or any other authority to assume or exercise the powers of the Governor in the appointment of the Chairman and members of RSIEC.

The group is also contending that, by the combined effect of the relevant sections of the Constitution, the appointment of Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Sole Administrator, an office they claim is not recognized by the Constitution, does not confer on him the statutory power to appoint the RSIEC Chairman and members to organize or conduct elections across the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State.

The presiding judge, Justice Turaki Mohammed, on Monday fixed the date for judgment after counsels representing the parties argued and adopted their final written addresses.

Lagos Demolition: Government plunging Nigerians deeper into hardship – Peter Obi

The 2023 Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has accused the government of demolishing citizens’ property without notice, saying such an act is unlawful and insensitive.

In a post on his verified X handle on Monday, Obi said the action of the government is plunging Nigerians deeper into hardship.

The reports said that recently, some plazas were demolished at the trade fair complex in Ojo LGA of Lagos State.

The operation was said to have been carried out by officials of the Lagos ministry of physical planning, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, and the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority.

The former Anambra Governor said the willful destruction of people’s homes, shops, and goods by government agencies remains deeply condemnable.

According to him, such actions were unacceptable, especially under an administration whose policies had pushed millions of Nigerians into poverty within 29 months.

Obi added that rather than compounding citizens’ hardship, the government should prioritise compassion and relief measures for struggling families.

“This is happening across the country at a time when the government is supposed to be lifting citizens out of poverty. Instead, it is plunging them deeper into hardship.

“These demolitions destroy livelihoods, undermine businesses, and threaten the economic security of hardworking citizens,” he wrote.

Ogoni leaders renew call for Ken Saro-Wiwa Day recognition

Ogoni leaders, environmental activists, and community advocates have renewed calls on the United Nations to officially declare October 10 as Ken Saro-Wiwa Day to honour the late writer, environmentalist, and human rights defender. Ken Saro-Wiwa.

Ken Saro-Wiwa was executed on November 10, 1995, by the late General Sani Abacha’s military regime for his struggle against environmental degradation in the Niger Delta.

They made the call in a statement obtained in Uyo on Sunday after his 84th posthumous birthday celebration, which was held in his hometown, Bane, in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State on Friday

The event, organised by the Ken Saro-Wiwa Foundation, drew participants from across the Niger Delta, civil society organisations, youth groups, and local communities who gathered to honour the memory of the Ogoni icon and to recommit themselves to the values he lived and died for.

Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Foundation, Barry Wugale, emphasised the need for global recognition of Saro-Wiwa’s contributions to human rights and environmental justice.

He recalled that in 2005, during the 10th anniversary of Saro-Wiwa’s execution, the environmental community had made a similar call to the United Nations and said it was time for that demand to be renewed.

“Today, we are renewing that appeal, that the UN should set aside October 10 as Ken Saro-Wiwa Day to immortalise a man whose vision and sacrifice transcend borders,” Wugale said.

He explained that the Foundation operates on six thematic pillars, literacy and literature, activism through art, environmental renewal, the future economy, technology and innovation, and partnerships — all inspired by Saro-Wiwa’s ideals.

Wugale also revealed that the Foundation was working to revive the Ogoni leader’s unrealised dreams, including a community microfinance initiative for women and an international model secondary school in Bane.

“Saro-Wiwa believed that no Ogoni child should be left behind. He was a man who planned 20 years ahead of his time,” he noted. “We will ensure that his vision of education, environmental justice, and community-driven progress becomes reality.”

In his remarks, Comrade Lekia Christian, President of the Niger Delta Coalition Against Violence, described Ken Saro-Wiwa as a rare visionary whose works and intellectual courage continue to inspire resistance against oppression and injustice.

According to him, “Ken Saro-Wiwa was a man of ideas and conviction. He used the power of words and intellect to awaken a generation. Many of his books are still used by students and professionals across the world,” he said.

Gunmen abduct 12-year-old girl returning from farm

A 12-year-old girl has reportedly been abducted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers at the Ayogwiri community in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

DAILY POST gathered that the mother of the victim was, however, released by the abductors.

The suspected kidnappers are said to be demanding the sum of N5 million ransom from the family of the abductee whose identity is yet to be identified as of press time.

The incident was said to have happened on Friday, October 20, 2025, when the victim, the mother and other women were returning from the farm.

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, the incident happened in the afternoon on the fateful day and two women were injured during the abduction.

He said the women are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, while the kidnappers took the young girl away.

He also added that youths, vigilantes and hunters of the community have combed the bushes and forests in a rescue mission for the kidnapped girl.

The community, however, called on governments at all levels to enhance security measures to prevent further incidents.

A statement by the Ayogwiri Osiregbemeh Union, AOU, also confirmed the abduction.

The statement signed by the chairman, Board of Trustees of the Union, Vincent Ozemoya condemned the incident, and described it as an unfortunate and unacceptable development.

Ozemoya noted that the development has shattered the peace and accommodating spirit of the community which gave rise to strangers being allowed to live amicably in the community.

“We received with grave concern the attack of some women from Ayogwiri and their daughter who were returning from their Farms on Friday, October 20, 2025. In the process, our daughter was abducted by the marauders while our women were brutally assaulted.

“The BoT calls on all relevant security agencies in the area to rise up and rid our farms and forest of evil elements by the herdsmen or kidnappers.

“Our farmers must feel safe and free to cultivate and provide food for their families without molestation and intimidation whatsoever. Our internal security architecture should wake up and take back our land and farms.

“We must deal with this situation decisively. We acknowledged and commend all necessary actions being taken to rescue our daughter unhurt.

“I therefore urge our people to remain calm but vigilant as the appropriate authorities do the needful” he said.

NSCDC shuts down over 600 illegal minning sites, arrests 500 suspects including foreign nationals

No fewer than 600 illegal mining sites have been shut down nationwide, and more than 500 suspects arrested and being prosecuted including foreign nationals by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The Commandant General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi made this disclosure during a courtesy visit to Ebonyi state governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru at Government House, Abakaliki.

Audi acknowledged the pressing security challenges in the state, reiterating the NSCDC’s mandate to protect critical national assets and infrastructure, regulate private security, and ensure the safety of mining zones.

However, he noted the high risks faced by NSCDC operatives, citing the recent killing of eight officers in Edo State during a rescue operation involving foreign nationals.

“We are operating in an asymmetric security environment including terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.

“We can only overcome these threats through coordination, cooperation, and collaboration,” Prof. Audi emphasized.

The Commandant General’s visit to Ebonyi is part of a national operational tour aimed at assessing state-level challenges and infrastructure gaps facing the Corps.

Reacting, Ebonyi state Governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru called for the immediate deployment of at least 400 personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to combat rampant illegal mining and address critical security shortfalls across the state.

Nwifuru described the security manpower currently available in Ebonyi as “grossly inadequate” and disproportionately lower than what is obtainable in other states.

“Ebonyi State Command doesn’t have manpower up to what a single local government has elsewhere. What is our sin?” the governor asked pointedly, expressing concern over the state’s vulnerability.

Governor Nwifuru decried the proliferation of illegal mining operations, warning that valuable resources such as gold are being extracted under the guise of lead and zinc mining, with minimal regulatory oversight.

He noted that in the absence of adequate NSCDC presence, military personnel have been forced to undertake duties outside their primary mandate.

“The army is doing NSCDC’s job because you don’t have the men.

“Some people are mining lead and zinc, but they’re actually extracting gold. The country is losing a lot,” he said.

The governor also submitted a list of 194 potential recruits from Ebonyi State, requesting federal consideration for their absorption into the Corps.

He emphasized that this would not only improve security but also reduce youth unemployment and enhance accountability in the extractive sector.

Emily Nzeribe tasks Imo school girls on ‘Body Positivity’

… As First Lady flags off menstrual hygiene initiative

By Ifeanyichukwu Ibe

A Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Dr. (Mrs.) Emily Akuabia Nzeribe, on Thursday, October 2, urged Imo State secondary school girls to always be conscious and positive towards their menstrual hygiene. She said that such would help them to build self-confidence, break barriers and to actualize their dreams.

Dr. Nzeribe, gave the charge at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Owerri, while featuring as the Guest Speaker during the launch of “Flow With Confidence” programme sponsored by the Renewed Hope Initiative of the Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, marking the official distribution of sanitary pads to school girls accross the state.

With her lecture titled: “Understanding Menstrual Health and Hygiene” Dr. Nzeribe, explained that “Menstruation is a natural and healthy part of life for people with female reproductive systems,” adding that the physiological process in females lasts for 3-8 days in every 21-35 days, though varies for each person. According to her, such natural reoccurrence was a sign that the body is healthy and able to reproduce.

The healthcare provider, however, frowned that economic constraints, unhygienic practices, social and cultural misrepresentations pose significant threats to menstrual health management, as the girl-child is faced with stigmatization, risks of infection and infertility, as well as the inability to pursue her education and other goals.

She enjoined the participants drawn from various schools to embrace “Body Positivity” to be healthy, overcome challenges, and tasked them to be bold in addressing their menstrual health, including knowledge-sharing on best practices with mothers, sisters, teachers and health workers.

The medical practitioner, charged the students on hand-washing, genital area care, use of healthy sanitary pads and appropriate disposals to achieve better hygiene and body consciousness. She also recommended light exercise, stress reduction, warm water, heating pad, healthy food, water consumption and medical attention from qualified personnel for menstruating individuals.

Dr. Nzeribe, extolled Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the Imo State First Lady, Barr. Chioma Uzodimma for the intervention and other girl-child welfare initiatives in the country and the state. She advocated collaborative efforts  through targeted policies and fundings to create environments for girls, especially the vulnerable to manage their menstrual hygiene with confidence devoid of financial hardships.

In her address, Senator Tinubu, represented by Barr. Chioma Uzodimma, noted that the nationwide programme was to empower school girls with relevant knowledge on menstrual hygiene and to inspire them to pursue their goals with dignity and confidence. In addition, she disclosed that Imo State school girls would receive 10,000 packs of sanitary pads out of the 370,000 provided for states accross the country.

Barr. Uzodimma, described as unacceptable situations where menstruating girls especially in rural areas are deprived of access to education and other social activities because of menstrual problems, including inability to purchase sanitary pads, as she also decried unsafe menstrual practices. She added that the choice of the product was to provide a simple solution for the wellbeing of the participants.

The Imo First Lady, counseled the students to leverage the opportunity to improve their menstrual hygiene, and to pursue their dreams confidently, while urging local government officials and others to ensure a successful distribution of the sanitary pads. She challenged stakeholders to ensure that Nigerian girls are supported and encouraged “to live, to learn, to thrive and to Flow With Confidence.”

The event attended by the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, former Imo State governor’s wife, Barr. Chioma Ohakim, state and local government officials, traditional rulers, party officials and various schools.

Uzodimma expresses readiness to secure nooks, crannies of Imo State

…Solicits support , assistance of leaders, stakeholders

By Jennifer John

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has expressed the renewed vigor and readiness of his administration to restore security of lives and properties to every inch, nooks and crannies of the state.

Governor Uzodimma made this disclosure in his address during the stakeholders meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre (EIICC), Owerri, Saturday, during which he solicited the support and assistance of stakeholders and leaders of the state at various levels to achieve the aim.

He expressed his full support and preparedness for the idea of state Police which is geared towards rooting out insecurity from the grassroots level. He disclosed that his administration has started getting ready for the initiative, with the ongoing training of the state Vigilante personnel, currently made up with five persons from each autonomous community.

He disclosed  that at the end of their training, the personnel will be well armed and equipped like any well equipped military team, adding further, “I am very very ready and prepared now to secure the state”

He berated a situation where miscreants were pursuing leaders and important personalities out of their homes in some communities across the state, leaving the communities in dispair, and at the mercy of criminals.

While  encouraging leaders of APC to be bold and proud of their association with the party, he encouraged those who are still having double mind to take the bold step and come into the party without any further delay, boasting that any person playing politics in the state outside of the APC was making a west of his or her time.

He said, “Any political struggle you want to undertaker, and you are not doing it in APC, I am sorry, you will be like someone in a bicycle, pursuing an Aeroplane”.

He use the opportunity to announce that the Governor of Enugu State (South East) will, by the coming Tuesday join the APC, even as every arrangement had been concluded for Bayelsa State Governor (South South) to also join the APC.

The Imo number one citizen used the opportunity to stress the ongoing empowerment programme of the federal government, through the federal Ministry of Rural Development intended to empower 1000 to 2000 businesses per political Ward in the country.

He regretted that Imo State and South East zone in general was lagging behind, as most Wards and LGAs had not submitted their list, as had been done by their counterparts in other regions of the country.

Uzodimma however promised that the state government will come in through the Ministries, to ensure that the list was properly compiled and made ready, as soon as possible.

Oppose Nnamdi Kanu’s detention, join October 20 protest – IPOB lawyer to Nigerians

The Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Aloy Ejimakor, has said the continued detention of the Biafra agitator should be opposed by all.

Ejimakor said Kanu cannot be tried on the basis of the infamous extraordinary rendition that brought him back to Nigeria.

He said those who truly support the rule of law in Nigeria should oppose the continued prosecution of Kanu.

In a statement he issued, Ejimakor urged Nigerians to join the October 20 protest to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to Ejimakor: “Lately, some individuals and civic groups have, in some show of support for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, indicated that they will ‘monitor’ his trial. While it is commendable that Kanu has attracted such avalanche of support across the spectrum, it’s important to make it clear that there’s not supposed to be any trial to monitor, not to talk of prosecuting him in the first place.

“To better understand how Kanu ended up in Nigeria and why he’s not supposed to face trial, you need to juxtapose it to what happened to Umaru Dikko in 1984 and its fallouts. Dikko’s kidnapping was, like this one of Kanu, a brazen act of attempted extraordinary rendition, which – by the way – is a grave State crime under the canons of international law that bind Nigeria as a bonafide member of comity or nations.

“When it happens, dire consequences must ensue and one of them is this: By the dint of such egregious misconduct, the complicit rogue State permanently loses its prosecutorial power over the victim of the rendition.

“Though the kidnapping of Dikko failed, it brought the following consequences: Britain swiftly arrested several suspects, four were convicted and they served years in prison. Britain expelled the Nigerian High Commissioner and broke diplomatic relations with Nigeria for 2 years.

“And most tellingly, Nigeria’s subsequent requests to Britain to extradite Dikko and others were summarily denied. As regards Kanu, Nigeria has, by her own hands, lost its jurisdiction to subject him to trial. In other words, no valid prosecutorial action can proceed from such a manifestly criminal conduct by a State. So, when you say you will be monitoring Kanu’s trial or that you want a fair trial for him, you are unwittingly buying into a grievous State crime that should shock your conscience, like it shocked the conscience of the several international tribunals that have condemned what happened to Kanu.

“Now, you have seen why you must oppose Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s continued prosecution/detention and join the train (for his freedom) before it leaves the station to Aso Rock for #MNKOct20.”

Refund failed ATM transactions within 48 hours – CBN orders banks

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has ordered Deposit Money Banks and other financial institutions to refund customers for failed Automated Teller Machine, ATM, transactions within 48 hours.

This directive is in a sweeping reform aimed at protecting consumers and restoring confidence in the banking system.

This is contained in a draft guideline released by the apex bank on Saturday, titled “Exposure of the Draft Guidelines on the Operations of Automated Teller Machines in Nigeria.”

The document signed by the Director of Payments System Policy Department, Musa I. Jimoh, was circulated to banks, payment service providers, card schemes, and independent ATM deployers, with a call for stakeholder feedback by October 31, 2025.

Under the draft, failed “on-us” transactions, where customers use their own bank’s ATM, must be reversed instantly. If technical glitches prevent immediate reversal, the bank is required to manually refund the customer within 24 hours.

For “not-on-us” transactions, involving other banks’ ATMs, refunds must be processed within 48 hours.

“Customers must not be made to suffer for failed transactions caused by system errors or network failures,” the circular stressed.

The apex bank also mandated banks and ATM acquirers to deploy technology that automatically reverses failed or partial transactions, removing the need for customers to lodge complaints.

It said that institutions holding customer funds due to failed disbursements must reconcile and return balances immediately.

The CBN said these measures respond to widespread frustration over delayed refunds and poor customer service and form part of a broader effort to enhance consumer protection, improve reliability, and modernise Nigeria’s payment infrastructure in line with global standards.

Lady faints at Abuja Airport after scuffle over missing flight

A lady caused stir at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Sunday after fainting when she was involved in a flight after missing her flight.

The two sisters, both adults, reportedly booked to travel via a NG Eagle flight but they missed the flight after arriving the airport late.

This, however, led to a fight between the two sisters who reportedly scattered their bags and created a scene before the airport security intervened.

It was learnt that the two sisters were dragged to the interrogation office where they continued their scuffle and in the process, one of them fainted.

Spokesperson of the NCAA, Mr. Michael Achinmugu, confirmed the development in a post on his X handle.

However, he did not give further details on the sisters and the destination they were traveling to.

He said, “Calls were made for an ambulance to take her to the hospital, but her sister said that the problem is more spiritual than medical and, therefore, did not need a hospital.

“She is presently receiving attention at the FAAN clinic. Hopefully, she makes a recovery. This is not how things should be.”

Daily Trust reports that passengers travelling on a domestic flight are expected to arrive at the airport one hour before departure to complete the pre-departure formalities while for the international passengers, they are to arrive two hours before the flight.

Igbo can’t become president in 2027; claiming it’s their turn is wrong – Umahi

Minister of Works David Umahi says the South-East zone must exercise patience in its quest for Nigeria’s presidency, declaring that it is not yet its turn to produce the country’s next leader.

Mr Umahi, in an interview with journalists on Sunday in Abuja, emphasised the need for political fairness and continuity in 2027, referencing the work that President Bola Tinubu had been doing since 2023.

“No, it is not our time; it is not the time of South-East yet,” said Mr Umahi. “We, the 17 southern governors, went to Asaba before 2023, and we went to say, listen, it doesn’t matter the political party, but the next president should come from the south.”

The minister and former governor said that even though the South-Easterners also wanted to be president in 2023, Mr Tinubu won, and so, “it is wrong for the South-East to come and say it is their turn.”

Mr Umahi maintained that Mr Tinubu must serve two terms before South-Easterners can vie for the presidency. He added that the North-East could also join in 2031 because the zone had not produced a president before.

“No, he (Tinubu) has to finish the eight years. The eight years he took is for all of us, both the South and the North. So he has to finish, and when he has finished in 2031, the South-East can now vie, in the sense that they have never tasted the position before.

“So for me, it is not the time (of the South-East). And when the time comes, we have sons and daughters that are eminently qualified (to contest for president),” he said.

Mr Umahi said there are people who are “very eminently qualified and better” than those who are clamouring for it now.

The minister, however, admitted that the South-East had suffered some measure of marginalisation in the past, stating that that was why it was very difficult for some governors like him to deliver the zone for the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the 2023 general elections.

APC performed poorly in 2023 in the South-East, with the entire zone delivering a paltry 5.85 per cent of the total votes to the party.

Mr Umahi attributed the situation to what he called unfair treatment of the South-East people in the past, adding, “But right now, President Bola Tinubu does not want to know where you come from. He is treating everybody very nicely.

“The South-East might say they did not get a lot of appointments, but the position of the Minister of Works is equivalent to five grade A ministers.

“The question is that there was a time we (South-East) had all sorts of appointments. Did it translate into infrastructure development? The answer is no.”

He said that with the few appointments from the South-East, there are infrastructure projects, including the Enugu–Onitsha road project and a 35-kilometre second access route in Anambra State.

Although the minister admitted there had been some “little challenges” in funding, he said the ministry had convinced the contractors that they would be paid and should return to the site.

He highlighted other roads currently being constructed in the zone, including the Port Harcourt-Aba road (86 kilometres), the Aba-Umuahia road (56 kilometres by two), Umuahia-Lokpanta road (six kilometres), and Lokpanta-Enugu road (61 kilometres by two), worth over N100 billion.

Mr Umahi also mentioned the Enugu dualisation to Abakaliki, which is N183 billion, as well as the Trans-Sahara road from Ebonyi to the Benue boundary, which he put at N456 billion.

Mr Umahi added he could beat his chest about what Mr Tinubu had done for the South-East in the last two years.

ASUU declares two-week strike, orders members to down tools on Monday

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the commencement of a two-week ‘total strike’ and ordered its members to withdraw their services across the country, effective 12:01 a.m. on Monday.

ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Sunday.

The development comes after the two-week ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to address their long-standing demands expired.

Prof. Piwuna expressed dismay that nothing significant had happened since it issued the two-week ultimatum. “Government has been asking for time with nothing concrete on the ground to resolve it,” he said.

According to him, the decision to embark on the total strike was reached after several rounds of meetings with government representatives ended without any tangible commitment. He noted that the union had exhausted all avenues for dialogue and patience, emphasising that the strike action was the last resort to compel the government to fulfil its promises.

He further explained that the union had consistently shown restraint in order not to disrupt the academic calendar, but the government’s insensitivity had left them with no alternative.

“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from midnight (12:01 a.m.) on Monday, 13 October 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting,” he said.

He also called on well-meaning Nigerians, civil society organisations, and the media to prevail on the Federal Government to address the lingering issues once and for all. The union warned that unless concrete steps are taken within the two-week period, it will not hesitate to extend the strike indefinitely. “This struggle is not just for university lecturers; it is for the soul of public education in Nigeria,” Prof. Piwuna declared.

The seven-point demands include: re-negotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement; sustainable funding of universities; revitalisation of universities; victimisation of ASUU members in Lagos State University (LASU), KSU (now Prince Abubakar Audu University), and Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

Others are outstanding 25–35 per cent salary arrears; promotion arrears for over four years; as well as third-party deductions.

Again, Uzodimma  wins Most Pilgrims-Friendly  Governor  of the year award

… Described as Pilgrimage Ambassador

By Chris Anucha, reporting from Israel

The Imo State Governor, Distinguished Senator (Dr) Hope Odidika Uzodimma, has once again, beaten other governors in the country, to clinch this year’s award, as the most Pilgrims-friendly Governor of the year, 2025.

It would be recalled that Senator Hope Uzodimma won the same award in 2024, for sponsoring the highest number of Christian Pilgrims in the country,   to Israel on Holy pilgrimage, totallying 1,000. He repeated the same feat in 2025.

The award was announced by the Executive  Secretary of  Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission(NCPC), RT. Rev. Stephen T.V Adegbite, during  the issuing of certificates of  participation  to  those, who took part in this year’s  pilgrimage to Israel, which took  place   Thursday evening,   at the  prestigious   King  Solomon Hotel, Tiberias.

Bishop Adegbite, who described Governor Uzodimma as a friend and brother, commended him for his consistency in sponsoring pilgrims to the Holy Land, highlighting his commitment to uplifting the spiritual well-being of Imo people.

Hear Bishop Adegbite: “The governor sponsored 1,000 pilgrims to the Holy Land in 2023, and many thought he did that because, he was seeking re-election; this year again, he has sponsored 1,000,  even when he is not seeking anything. As Pilgrimage Ambassador, Governor Uzodimma would help to coordinate other governors, to advance Christian Pilgrimage in Nigeria.”

The NCPC boss also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for “setting a precedent in pilgrimage in Nigeria, by being overwhelmingly supportive to both Christian and Muslim pilgrimages; his support for pilgrimage is unprecedented.”

Adegbite also thanked the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her “unwavering support to Mr. President, and for playing significant roles in Nigeria’s history.”

Bishop Adegbite didn’t stop there, he  also applauded the  Vice President,  Kashim Shettima,  and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, for their contributions to the growth and development of the country.

The NCPC boss lauded the Charge D’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Israel, Mr. Ezekiel Ikwe, for representing Nigeria well in Israel, despite challenges. He also thanked the Chairman of Imo State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Rev. Fr. Gilbert Alaribe, the ground handlers, President of Lourdes, Mr. Simon Makhlourf and CEO of Aerologistics, RevdOkeyIkeri, for a well-coordinated pilgrimage exercise.

Earlier, the Charge D’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Israel, Mr. Ezekiel Ikwe, thanked the NCPC boss for his visionary leadership, and Imo pilgrims for living up to expectations. He gave  assurance that the Embassy,  “will continue to secure and protect Nigerian pilgrims and Nigerians in Israel.”

Meanwhile, it has been  prayers and ‘thank you’ galore for  Governor  Uzodimma, from  this  year’s pilgrims, who could  not  hide their  excitement and feeling of love  for  the governor,  for  affording them the opportunity to travel to Israel on Holy Pilgrimage.

“I want to thank our governor, Onwa Oyoko, for this rare opportunity. Who would have thought that someone like me would have travelled to Israel one day, on Pilgrimage? He is a compassionate governor, a people-oriented governor, a people-friendly governor, God will continue to bless him,” one of the pilgrims told the reporter.

Another pilgrim said: “How can someone forget this gesture extended to us by  our dear  Governor? Other Imo State governors never gave Imolites the  opportunity to enjoy their resources, just like Onwa has done. Instead,  it was only their family members and cronies, who   were living in affluence, while  majority of the  people were languishing  in abject poverty. This is another form of empowerment. I will continue to pray for the governor and his family.

Mbah’s defection ends PDP’s presence in southeast — Okechukwu

A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has said that the planned defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) marks the final collapse of the opposition party’s presence in the entire southeast region.

Governor Mbah is expected to formally join the APC on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

Speaking with journalists on Sunday in Abuja, Okechukwu described the governor’s exit as a defining political moment and clear evidence that the Southeast has finally bid farewell to the PDP.

The former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) said Mbah’s decision to leave the PDP for the APC was “pragmatic, rational, and inevitable,” adding that it symbolises the end of the PDP’s dominance in the region, from controlling all five states in 1999 to none in 2025.

Recalling the words of the late Rt. Hon. Dr. Chuba Okadigbo, who lamented that the PDP “pays good deeds with bad coins,” Okechukwu said Mbah’s move vindicates that statement. He cited several instances, including the 1999 Jos presidential primary, where Okadigbo was allegedly betrayed, and the 2003 elections, when the Southeast failed to rally behind the Buhari/Okadigbo ticket.

Okechukwu faulted the PDP’s alleged disregard for equity and justice, pointing to the 2023 presidential primary, where no southern aspirant was allowed to contest despite appeals for power rotation.

“The last straw that broke the PDP’s camel’s back,” he said, “was the marginalisation of the Southeast during the dispute over the National Secretary position.”

He referenced a communiqué issued by the PDP Southeast Zonal Executive Committee on May 14, 2023, warning that the zone would reconsider its relationship with the party if Sunday Udeh-Okoye was not promptly confirmed as National Secretary following Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s exit to contest the Imo governorship election.

Okechukwu also recalled the remarks of former Senate President and PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, who lamented the Southeast’s continued neglect by the party despite its long-standing loyalty.

He concluded that the PDP’s serial betrayal and disregard for the Southeast justified Mbah’s defection.

“Governor Mbah’s exit is not an isolated event,” Okechukwu said. “It represents the final chapter in the Southeast’s disillusionment with a party that failed to reward faithfulness, fairness, and friendship.”

Orji Uzor Kalu is Kindergarten Politician to Peter Obi – Ohanaeze Youth

In the wake of the recent media outing of former Abia State Governor, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu on Channel TV on 8th October 2025, the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), the paramount socio cultural youth organization of Igbo youths worldwide, has depicted Orji Uzor Kalu as politically unsophisticated, and political kindergarten compared to former Labour Party presidential candidate, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi.

During a press briefing on 12th October 2025, Comrade Igboayaka O Igboayaka, national president of Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), posed a question regarding Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu’s decision to appear on Channel TV and discuss Mr. Peter Obi former presidential candidate of Labour Party in 2023 general election.

During the media chat, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu asserted that he is the most prominent, important politician in the Southeast, having achieved more politically than Mr. Peter Obi.

In the report Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu Stated “Peter is not my leader. I’m the most important politician from that zone. I have won two states before under the PPA. I have run for president before. My 4.9 million votes are still there since 2007. I achieved a lot with PPA. We had ministers, ambassadors, and several appointments under President Yar’Adua”

Comrade Igboayaka urged Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to desist from media engagements that are causing him embarrassment, noting that Orji Uzor Kalu is unable to rival Mr. Peter Obi’s level of political influence, acceptability and popularity in the Southeast and Nigeria at large.

Orji Uzor Kalu should humble himself and endeavor to gain and learn political popularity and acceptability from Mr. Peter Obi.

Peter Obi is a trailblazer as the first politician from Igboland, both living and deceased, to have secured victories in five Southeast states during a presidential election. He has also made history as the first opposition presidential candidate to have won in Lagos and Abuja against the ruling party. Furthermore, Peter Obi is distinguished as the first Nigerian politician to have built a robust nationwide following of organic supporters across all 36 states, affectionately referred to as the “Obidient Movement”.

Mr. Peter Obi is the only politician in Nigeria who has motivated electorates to participate in voter registration. Peter Obi has become a political institution, redeeming hope in Nigeria’s electoral system and voting process.

The Nigerian populace had become disillusioned with voting and electioneering, however, Peter Obi proved to be a political magnet, reattracting Nigerians to the voting system.

Considering political acceptability and popularity, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, accused of involvement in a 7.56 billion naira fraud, fall short of the expected standards to occupy a least position, a gate-Man within Mr. Peter Obi’s political sphere.

Orji Uzor Kalu as a corrupt politician who was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment, but was saved by a corrupt judiciary and political lobbying, if Nigeria is not a failed State, Orji Uzor Kalu is not qualify to speak on political issues in Nigeria.

Unfortunately Nigeria’s political system allows mediocre ones like Orji Uzor Kalu,  incompetent political shenanigans, political profiteers and looters to dance a dance of shame in our political cycle. In a decent and working state Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu should be moving in shame on the street with his mask.

Comrade Igboayaka has rejected the notion from Orji Uzor Kalu that the PPA emerged victorious in two states, characterizing it as an erroneous narrative that stemmed from electoral malpractices engineered by Prof Maurice Iwu, who served as most corrupt Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at the time.

Orji Uzor Kalu was implicated in electoral fraud, which compelled T.A. Orji to defect from PPA, citing electoral irregularities orchestrated by Chief Maurice Iwu. Similarly, in Imo State, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), due to internal conflicts, adopted the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) as their platform, resulting in Dr. Ikedi Ohakim’s emergence as the winner of the 2007 Imo gubernatorial election, Comrade Igboayaka noted.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu cannot secure victory in any credible and transparent election within his home base of Abia, the Southeast, and Nigeria as a whole.

A political failure like Orji Uzor Kalu, who enthusiastically allegedly purchased a presidential ticket for Sen. Ahmed Lawal, a strategy that ultimately failed, cannot compare himself to Mr. Peter Obi, who left the People’s Democratic Party and built a formidable political movement that shocked Nigerians and the world with his remarkable performance in the 2023 presidential election.

Comrade Igboayaka has lambasted Orji Uzor Kalu, cautioning him to prepare for his forthcoming political retirement in 2027, in light of the burgeoning ballot revolution driven by the Obidient Movement across Nigeria.

Orji Uzor Kalu should be cognizant that Nigerians’ last hope hinges on Mr. Peter Obi’s 2027 presidential project, which will entail a defensive Ballot Revolution across Nigeria’s 36 states.

Orji Uzor Kalu must recognize that Mr. Peter Obi’s name will appear on the ballot in 2027, under any available party platform. Furthermore, any individual or group considering electoral manipulation and rigging in 2027 should be aware that they risk plunging Nigerians into a crisis comparable to Somalia’s. Nigerians will counter oppression with swift and equal retaliation, like eye for eye, tooth for tooth, comrade Igboayaka warned.

I’m committed to peace in Ohaji/Egbema – LG Chairman

…Urges trouble makers to embrace peace or face consequences

 By Jude Onyenedogha

The Chairman, Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, Prince Marcel Amadioha has restated his commitment to peace in the LGA, which he said has been one of the major achievements of his administration.

The Chairman made this assertion while reacting to a recent cult gang incident in Obile, one of the autonomous communities in the LGA which lead to loss of lives and destruction of properties, and which has also lead to allegations and counter allegations, with some segments giving it political coloration.

The immediate past President General of Obile Autonomous Community, Kingsley Omuruka (Popularly known as Blogger) had dragged the name of the Chairman and the Vice Chairman into the crisis with petitions and publications.

One of the reports sighted by our correspondent had the headline -Tension in Obile Community as Suspected Cultists Kill Oil Company Staff, Indigenes.

…Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Chairman, Amadioha, Vice Chair, Mrs. Elizabeth Opara Fingered in escalating crisis

The report had linked the escalating crisis to the alleged unilateral appointment of one Mr. Paschal Ndubuisi Obido as the new President-General of Obile by the Chairman on February 10, 2025, adding that the Vice Chairman, Mrs. Elizabeth Uluma Jude Opara facilitated the appointment.

In the report, Omuruka accused Mr. Obido and his group, who he described as a cult gang of being responsible for the murder of Mr. Denoute Gbaraka, a staff of Endroma Oil Servicing Company, and another indigene, Mr. Chinedu Chukwu. He further alleged that the same group kidnapped a man known popularly as “Onwa” from the Ogbonna family on October 1, 2025.

However the LG Chairman rubbished Omuruka’s allegation linking the crisis to the issue of President General of Obile community, wondering how the action of a known criminal gang and serial killers should be trivialized by linking it to the issue of President General of the community.

Amadioha made it clear that he never unilaterally appointed a President General for the community, rather he upheld a peace accord reached by the warring factions of the community, that included Omuruka, where a list of leadership provided by the two factions (the one controlled by Omuruka and the one controlled by the traditional ruler of the community) were harmonized leading to the emergence of Obido as the P.G and that after the harmonization, peace returned to the community, until the recent uprising of the cult gang, who are seeking recognition.

On the allegation by Omuruka that the current President General is a well known cult leader and criminal, the chairman made it clear that it is only the law enforcement agencies and court of law that has the power to declare someone a criminal, after thorough investigation might have proven any allegation against such person.

He said based on the petitions and allegations raised by Omuruka, the P.G was invited by the Department of State Services (DSS) who later released him after some days of questioning and thorough investigations, probably because they didn’t find anything incriminating against him.

The Chairman expressed his openness and readiness to submit himself to any investigation by law enforcement agencies, making it clear that he will thereafter follow legal means to seek redress over the malicious and libelous allegations against him by Omuruka in general.

He used the opportunity to urge indigenes of Obile community and Ohaji/Egbema to go about their normal daily businesses without any fear of molestation, as adequate security measures has been put in place to guarantee their safety, while re-emphasizing the call on the cult gang to surrender their arms and embrace peace or be ready to taste the full wrath of the law.

He further used the opportunity to extend sympathy and condolence to those whose lost their loved ones and those who properties were vandalized, promising that the government will extend helping hand to them at the appropriate time, describing them as victims of unpleasant circumstances that were not their making.

“Road accidents remain a major public health challenge, and impaired vision among drivers contributes significantly to crashes, injuries, and loss of lives. By ensuring that drivers and commuters have access to proper vision screening, we are not only protecting sight but also safeguarding lives,” Dr. Iroakazi, stated in her address, adding that the opportunity was not only for drivers, but for all residents of Imo state.

Her statement further read: “This initiative is one of the major programs under our administration’s umbrella project, “Anya Ndi Imo Di Nma.” It is a homegrown program that is also in line with the 3R (Recovery, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation) Agenda of His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodimma.”

She hailed the state government’s health policies, particularly the Imo Health Insurance Scheme, and urged stakeholders to invest in eye health, to ensure public safety, productivity

and citizens general wellbeing.

They identified shortsightedness, glaucoma, cataract, retina issues and refractive errors as some of the common vision challenges facing members of the society, attributing causes and risk factors to include diabetes and hypertension among others.

They argued that better vision starts with love and care for one’s sight, explaining that the eye as a critical and dynamic part of the body required constant examinations and continous care to address avoidable causes of blindness. The speakers also  charged Imo State residents and beyond to resist the temptations of patronizing quacks towards safeguarding their sight, urging them to always insist on qualified and certified eye care providers.

The speakers included, Chief Dr. Sharon Ohaka, Dr. Mrs. Munachi Abiazie (Secretary, Imo NOA), DR. Mrs. Jacqueline Obioma-Elemba (Chairman, Public Health Committee, Imo NOA) and Dr. Mrs. Chinonye Ibe (Chairman, Event and Planning Committee).

From Henrietta Ashikodi, Umuahia

The Management of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic Aba (formerly Abia Poly), is set to relocate to it’s permanent site in Osisioma which will birth the commencement of 2025-2026 academic session

. Even as it notes that all 33 courses of the institution have been accredited.

The Rector, Dr Christopher Okoro, revealed this when the new Executive of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists,(NUJ), Abia State, paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Aba.

He hinted that the state government has cleared 36-month salary arrears, with  full accreditation of all the courses in the Poly.

The Rector reiterated that under governor Otti, welfare of staff is given top priority.

“We are not just student-centered, we are also staff centered. Our staff members have been taken care of.  All their arrears of salaries have been cleared.

“We came on board having 36 months’ salary but the Governor  has supported us to clear these areas as we no longer owe any lecturer”.

The Rector said that the institution which was deregistered by the National Board for Technical Education, (NBTE), about three years ago, had gained full accreditation for all its 33 programmes with additional 17 new programmes.

The Rector hinted that governor Otti, ensured that staff members who were not promoted since 2008-2012 have been promoted up to 2022, and the second phase of promotion will take to 2025.

Adding that Otti has paid the debt he did not owe.

He made it clear that they have outlawed the sale of handouts in the institution to stop exploitation of students adding also that management had also abolished the issuance of statement of results to make things easy for students.

“Students are no longer compelled to buy textbooks. Those things were things of the past. Sale of handouts is outlawed.

“We have digitalized the processes to ensure things are done the right way. We have abolished the issuance of Statement of Results.”

“How will a student finish up after five years and you give the person paper and call it Statement of Results?  And then the person will carry it,  probably pay for the clearance; and come back after years  for certificates and you still collect money again from the same person, and start looking for the files again? I said no!

“Upon graduation, students should be given certificates. And these certificates have QR codes. So, they are verifiable anywhere. Once an employer scans this QR code, it directs to Registrar and Rector. The holder’s name will appear. We will reply whether or not the person is our product..

“Management had made it easy for students to obtain their results without passing through the lecturers to avoid exploitation.

“Once exam is over, all results must be uploaded six weeks after examination. Four weeks for those of them in finals, and six weeks for the rest. So, students don’t need to go and meet the lecturer”.

The Rector thanked governor  Otti attributing the institution’s success stories to him stating that he thinks not just for now but for the future.”

Police pensioners rally for protests after talks collapse

Retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme have vowed to resume their protests on October 14 at the National Assembly, despite recent interventions by the Inspector General of Police and President Bola Tinubu.

The retirees have for years demanded their removal from the CPS and the creation of a dedicated Police Pension Board, similar to those enjoyed by the military and the Department of State Services.

In response to their protest in July, the IG, who decried the humiliating conditions of retirees under the scheme, said the police leadership had initiated efforts to augment the pension of retired officers and had presented its position to the National Assembly during the public hearing of the bill seeking to exempt the police from the scheme.

Also, on August 7, the president ordered the immediate implementation of overdue pension increases and the rollout of free healthcare access for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

He also ordered PenCom to resolve the issue surrounding police pension.

Speaking with our correspondent on Tuesday, the leader of the aggrieved officers, CSP Mannir Lawal (retd.), said the retirees had grown frustrated over the continued delay in exiting the scheme, which he described as exploitative and unfair to members of the Nigeria Police Force.

“We are coming out en masse again on October 14 at the National Assembly. An order was given by the President, but they are trying to moderate the CPS to attract our attention. But we have told them that no matter the adjustments, we don’t want to remain under it. We want a total exit and the establishment of the Nigerian Police Pension Board.”

He disclosed that the leadership of the National Pension Commission had met with the group, but the retirees insisted on their position.

“The PenCom boss met with us, and we made it clear that we don’t want to remain under the CPS. The Army, the DSS, and the NIA have all exited the scheme. Why are the police being treated differently? Did we commit a crime by serving as police officers?”

Lawal expressed frustration that many Nigerians were unaware of the difficulties facing retired officers under the scheme, describing it as a “scam.”

“People outside don’t know what is happening, but we inside know. The CPS is a scam—a real scam. We have been on this for over 15 years. We have written to Mr. President several times, but there has been no concrete response. We have been pushed to the wall.”

Lawal said the October 14 protest would continue until the government grants their demand for a full exit from the CPS and the creation of a dedicated Nigerian Police Pension Board.

US Genocide Allegations: Christians are being killed – CAN clarifies position

The national leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), has made its stance clear on the alleged genocide against Christians in Nigeria.

CAN affirmed that many Christian communities in parts of Nigeria, especially in the North, have suffered severe attacks, loss of lives, and the destruction of places of worship.

CAN, in a statement signed by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, its President, said it has become necessary for the body to speak clearly, truthfully, and with compassion.

UCL: ‘Nobody has kind of squad they have’ – Thierry Henry names strongest team in Europe

He said, “These realities are painful reminders of the urgent need for government and security agencies to act decisively to protect every citizen, regardless of region.”

CAN said that it has over the years, alongside the wider Christian community “worked tirelessly to draw attention, both nationally and internationally, to the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.”

The Association said it has “established mechanisms for recording incidents of religiously motivated killings, engaged with international partners, written to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and hosted global Christian organisations such as the World Evangelical Alliance and the Lausanne Movement.”

It said that these sustained efforts demonstrate its consistent advocacy for justice, peace, and the protection of Christian communities under threat.

“Our concern remains that these cries for justice and protection are too often met with delay or denial. We therefore renew our call on government and security agencies to take urgent, transparent, and equitable action to end the killings, safeguard vulnerable Christian communities from displacement, and ensure that perpetrators face the full weight of the law. The pain of Christian families torn apart by violence must never be treated as mere statistics,” he added.

CAN said it acknowledges the efforts of government and security agencies in responding to the nation’s security challenges, but urged that “these efforts be redoubled towards equitable protection for all. It is equally imperative that perpetrators of violence are brought swiftly and transparently to justice.”

It added, “We also appeal to all Christian leaders to continue to speak and act with wisdom, unity, and faith, knowing that peace is too fragile to be taken for granted.

“Nigeria’s healing will not come from denial or blame, but from courage: the courage to face our collective failures, to grieve together, and to rebuild trust within our communities. Only then can our nation rise from its wounds and embrace a future of genuine peace,” CAN maintained.

Stop trial, Nnamdi Kanu needs to continue Biafra agitation – IPOB lawyers tell Tinubu

The legal team of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), yesterday, has called on President Bola Tinubu to order the discontinuation of terrorism charges against the Biafran agitator.

Kanu’s lawyer, Maxwell Opara said Tinubu should discontinue Kanu’s trial so that he can continue with his Biafra agitation.

Opara disclosed this while addressing journalists at the Abuja Federal High Court on Wednesday.

According to Opara: “Now to the President, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, please, as a matter of urgency, direct the Attorney General to discontinue this one with charges.

“This charge is embarrassing Nigeria before the world, and the more they keep applying for adjournment, I know that they must have advised you, telling you that they don’t have a case.

“So in order to protect the integrity of Nigeria, please allow the judges to discontinue this particular charge.

“And so that Kanu can continue with this agitation, address all those issues that gave rise to the agitation, it will be able to come down, anything short of that, Nnamdi Kanu is expected to continue with the agitation.”

Opara warned Tinubu that those around his administration giving him ill-advice are making his government unpopular.

He said the Attorney General of the Federation will never tell Tinubu the truth.

“And all those people that are surrounding you, praising you, they are deceiving you, they are making your government unpopular.

“We are the people that are helping your government to tell you the truth. The Attorney General will not tell you the truth, of course. We are the people that will tell you the truth,” he said.

Illegal mining: Reps C’ttee vows to end $9bn annual loss

The House of Representatives, through its Ad-hoc Committee on illegal mining, has promised to recover the $9 billion lost annually to illicit mining activities across the country.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Committee yedterday, the Chairman, Sanni Abdulraheem, said illegal mining not only constitutes an economic drain pipe to the nation.

To arrest the scourge, the federal government launched the mining marshals in 2024.

Their activities have culminated in the arrest of over 300 illegal miners in 10 states of the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory.

Additionally, 98 illegal mining sites spread across the country have been shut down.

“It is estimated that Nigeria loses approximately $9 billion annually due to illegal mining activities. This theft of our resources that should be enriching our nation has gone on for far too long, and it is time to put an end to it,” Abdulraheem said.

According to him, the Committee is charged with blocking revenue leakages, enforcing transparency, and ensuring that the nation’s mineral wealth contributes fully to economic development.

“As we move forward, one of the core objectives of this Committee is to block the revenue leakages caused by illegal mining and its associated activities, which not only steal from our national treasury but also hinder the growth of legitimate mining operations that could contribute substantially to our national Internally Generated Revenue.

“Through structured oversight, we will strengthen revenue tracking mechanisms and ensure that the full benefits of Nigeria’s mining sector flow directly into government coffers, rather than being siphoned off through illegal mining activities.

“Equally important is the issue of criminality and environmental degradation linked to illegal mining. These activities not only fuel insecurity, but they also lead to the pollution of our waterways, the degradation of our forests, and the displacement of vulnerable communities. This is a matter of national urgency to tackle these issues head-on,” he added.

Stressing that the lower chamber would leave no stone unturned, he said the committee stands firmly on the constitutional mandate entrusted to it by Nigerians.

While pledging the readiness of the parliament to deal decisively with anyone found to be involved in illegal mining, the Committee chairman urged citizens to expose criminals in their midst in the interest of the nation.

“We are committed to fulfilling our oversight responsibility as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to expose corruption in any form, curb malpractices, and ensure that our resources are used for the benefit of all Nigerians.

“It is through such diligent oversight that we will rid our nation of the cancer of illegal mining, safeguard the environment, and protect the well-being of our citizens. Through the powers granted to us, we will investigate, gather evidence, and propose actionable solutions that will restore sanity and accountability to Nigeria’s mining sector,” he added.

On the Ajaokuta Steel Company, he assured that the Tinubu-led administration has shown leadership and willingness to revive the national asset.

“For many years, the Ajaokuta Steel Company has stood as a symbol of unrealised potential. However, I am proud to say that it is now on track to fulfil its true promise. The current administration has shown unprecedented political will to rejuvenate this critical national asset.

“This is reflected in the appointment of an indigenous professional to lead its revival, a move that gives us hope for the future of Nigeria’s steel industry. With Ajaokuta poised for success, we are looking at not just an economic game-changer but a cornerstone for our industrialisation, job creation, and long-term economic growth,” he said.

Representative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Commander of Mining Marshals, Attah Onoja, assured the committee of the Corps’ full cooperation.

Onoja disclosed that since the launch of the Mining Marshals operation in March 2024, the NSCDC has arrested over 500 illegal miners, with about 270 currently facing trial.

“I want to say very quickly that over 500 illegal miners have been arrested in the course of this operation. And this particular number that we are talking about, about 270 others are currently facing trial as we speak today.

“Nigeria’s Security and Civil Defence Corps, as an agency, is assuring this Honourable Committee of our maximum cooperation, maximum support where necessary to ensure that this all-important tax is achieved,” he stated

Nnamdi Kanu suffering because he’s from Southeast – IPOB lawyer, Opara

A member of Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), legal team, Maxwell Opara, yesterday said Biafra agitator, Nnamdi Kanu is suffering because he’s from the Southeast.

Opara said Kanu would have been free if he was from the Southwest or Northern part of Nigeria.

He disclosed this while addressing journalists at the Abuja Federal High Court.

Opara said: “They don’t have a case against Nnamdi Kanu. Of course, you know that had it been that Nnamdi Kanu from the north or from the southwest, he would not be here today.

“They are doing it because he’s from the east, Nnamdi Kanu is suffering this because he is from the south.”

He also criticised Igbo lawmakers in the National Assembly who have refused to rise up in Kanu’s defence.

“Those of you that are in the House of Assembly, Senate, Benchwarmers, watch what is going on, at the appropriate time, we will tell you that, yes, the masses are watching,” he added.

Court orders IGP to arrest Mahmood Yakubu, ex-INEC chairman

Despite his exit as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, has again ordered the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the former INEC chairman, Prof Mahmoud Yakubu, for an offence relating to contempt of court.

The Court order came a few hours after Yakubu left office as the INEC chairman.

The Action Alliance, (AA), had instituted a case before the court challenging INEC and its former chairman, Prof Yakubu, over their non-compliance with the judgment of the Court delivered by Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi in suit number FHC/OS/CS/194/2024.

In the said judgment, the court ordered INEC to put the names of the National Chairman of the Action Alliance, Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, and other members of the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, on the INEC portal.

The Court also held that the names of all the state chairmen of the party be uploaded on the INEC portal.

The court held that the elective convention of the party held on the 7th of October, 2023 which produced Omoaje as the national chairman of the party and other NEC members of the party was authentic as it was properly monitored and supervised by officials of INEC in accordance with the party’s constitution and the electoral acts.

However, INEC claimed to have complied with the court judgment, but the party disagreed with the commission, as the name of Omoaje was yet to be uploaded on the commission’s website despite the orders of the Court.

Although the names of the state chairmen of the party under the leadership of Omoaje and those of the NEC members are already on the INEC portal, Omoaje’s name is yet to be uploaded as of press time, a development that the court frowned at.

The court order obtained by our correspondent dated 7th October, 2025, and signed by Mr O.M. Kilani on behalf of the Court Registrar reads in part, “it is hereby ordered that the Inspector General of Police shall cause the arrest and shall charge the defendant/judgment debtors for contempt and committal proceedings within seven days of this ruling.”

The court also awarded a cost of #100,000 against the judgment creditors.
