139m Nigerians still live in poverty despite reform progress – World Bank

The World Bank has warned that around 139 million Nigerians are now living in poverty, even though the government’s recent economic reforms have shown some progress.

Speaking in Abuja during the launch of the October 2025 Nigeria Development Update (NDU) report titled “From Policy to People: Bringing the Reform Gains Home,” the World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Mathew Verghis, said the government’s efforts to stabilise the economy could be wasted if they do not lead to real improvements in people’s lives.

Verghis praised the bold reforms in foreign exchange management and the removal of fuel subsidies, describing them as major steps that could reshape Nigeria’s economy. He compared the current reform period to the major policy changes that transformed India’s economy in the early 1990s.

According to him, these reforms are already showing early results.

Economic growth is improving, government revenues are rising, debt conditions are better, foreign reserves are increasing, and the exchange rate market is becoming more stable. Inflation, he added, is also slowly easing.

“These are big achievements, and many countries would be glad to have them,” he said.

However, Verghis warned that most Nigerians have yet to feel the impact of these positive changes. He noted that poverty, which began rising in 2019 due to poor policies and external shocks like COVID-19, continues to grow despite the reforms.

“In 2025, we estimate that 139 million Nigerians live in poverty,” he said. This figure is up from 129 million in April 2025 and 87 million in 2023, showing how difficult living conditions have become for many households.

The World Bank report highlighted three urgent priorities for Nigeria to turn its policy gains into real benefits for citizens:

Verghis stressed that food inflation is the biggest concern, as high prices hurt everyone—especially the poor—and could weaken support for reforms.

“Persistent high food prices could slow recovery and damage confidence in reforms,” he warned.

While he commended the Central Bank of Nigeria for maintaining a tight monetary policy and the government for its fiscal discipline, Verghis said more needs to be done.

He urged the government to combine monetary and fiscal measures with structural reforms to fix long-standing problems in food production and distribution.

He also called on Nigeria to strengthen its financial management systems and expand the national safety net to protect the poorest citizens from the impact of economic adjustments.

Uwazurike to lead peaceful protest in Abuja for Nnamdi Kanu’s release

Founder of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazurike, has expressed readiness to lead a peaceful protest in Abuja or any other part of the country to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu, who once served as Director of Media under Uwazurike in MASSOB, before founding IPOB in London, has been in detention following his controversial rendition to Nigeria in 2021.

In a video message released on Wednesday, Uwazurike described Kanu’s continued incarceration as a political injustice against the Igbo nation, stressing that the issue transcends the individual and reflects broader discrimination against the South-East.

“I’ve listened to the court proceedings and the presentations by NnamdiKanu’s lawyers, and I want to say that I wish to be part of any peaceful demonstration in Abuja or anywhere in Nigeria for his release,” Uwazurike declared.

He revealed that he had contacted Kanu’s lawyer, Barrister Alloy Ejimakor, to volunteer as one of the defence witnesses for the IPOB leader.

Uwazurike emphasized that the planned protest would be entirely peaceful and non-violent, adding that it was motivated by a sense of justice, rather than politics.

“This is not just about NnamdiKanu; this is about Ndigbo. If anybody thinks that Kanu is being humiliated today, no — it is Ndigbo that are being humiliated,” he said.

He questioned what he described as double standards in the federal government’s handling of terrorism-related cases, arguing that it was unjust to negotiate with insurgents from one region while detaining freedom fighters from another region.

According to him, “This has nothing to do with terrorism, but with deep-rooted injustice against Ndigbo. We must do this for the future of our children. I will be there.”

Three Nigerian soldiers jailed for life for selling arms to terrorists

A Special Court-Martial of the Nigerian Army has convicted four soldiers for illegal arms trade and aiding terrorists in the North-East.
The trial, convened by Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division and Commander of Sector 1, Operation Hadin Kai, OPHK, Brigadier-General Ugochukwu Unachukwu, was held at the officers’ mess, Theatre Command Headquarters in Maiduguri.
Delivering judgment, the President of the Court-Martial, Brigadier-General Mohammed Abdullahi, sentenced Sergeants Raphael Ameh, Ejiga Musa, and lance corporal Patrick Ocheje, to life imprisonment.
Omitoye Rufus, a corporal, was handed a 15-year jail term.
The soldiers were found guilty of offences ranging from theft and unlawful dealing in ammunition to aiding the enemy — all punishable under the Armed Forces Act.
Ameh, an armourer at 7 division garrison, was said to have conspired with a deceased colleague to steal ammunition from the division’s armoury.
He worked with police officers to conceal weapons in bags of beans and smuggle them to Enugu and Ebonyi for criminals.
Abdullahi said bank records showed over 100 transactions linked to the trade between July 2022 and June 2024.
Musa, while serving as an armourer of 195 battalion, was said to have collaborated with Ocheje and police officers to sell an AK-47 rifle and large quantities of ammunition.
Records showed he collected more than N500,000. He was arrested while attempting to sell more ammunition.
Abdullahi revealed that Rufus sold 40 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition to a police officer.
Ocheje, deployed at forward operating base Molai, was found guilty of diverting ammunition during communal clashes at the persuasion of a police officer.
He also stole an AK-47 rifle belonging to a colleague.
The court held that their actions directly endangered military operations and national security, amounting to “aiding the enemy”.
Abdullahi condemned the convicts, describing them as “bad eggs” who betrayed the trust, discipline, and honour expected of soldiers in the fight against insurgency.
He restated the army’s zero-tolerance stance on the sale of arms or ammunition to adversaries “in whatever form or guise”.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the state police command SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, in Ilorin yesterday were not successful as she did not pick her phone calls.

Senator Achonu condemns Ngozi Ogbu’s  kidnap in Okigwe, calls for immediate release

Senator Athan Nneji Achonu, the 2023 Labour Party Governorship Candidate in Imo State has strongly condemned the abduction of Hon. Ngozi Ogbu, a former legislator from Imo State, who was kidnapped in Okigwe at a time when his late mother’s body lies in the mortuary awaiting burial. The Senator described the incident as “a direct assault on Igbo values, culture, and humanity” and called for Ogbu’s immediate release.
Speaking in reaction to the disturbing development, Senator Achonu stated:
“No true Biafran should ever resort to kidnapping or punishing fellow Igbos who have already suffered enough in this country. Any son of Igbo land who engages in kidnapping and robbery brings shame to his family and community, and must be exposed and rejected because that is not who we are.”
The Senator appealed directly to those holding Hon. Ogbu, stressing the emotional weight of the situation:
“I appeal directly to those holding Hon. Ngozi Ogbu — whose aged mother lies in the mortuary awaiting burial to release him immediately and allow him the dignity of laying her to rest.”
He also challenged the logic of targeting innocent citizens instead of engaging the government through legitimate means:
“If there are grievances against government, let them be channeled to the appropriate authorities, not by tormenting innocent people.
Senator Achonu further decried what he described as a breakdown of moral values and cultural respect:

“Have we truly lost respect for motherhood, for the dead, and for our ancestors? In the name of God Almighty and the spirits of our forefathers, I plead: let Hon. Ngozi Ogbu go home to his family and to bury his mother.”
Finally, Senator Achonu called for an urgent and comprehensive security overhaul in Imo State. He stressed that unless deliberate action is taken to strengthen local intelligence networks, empower community policing, and hold public officials accountable, “the cycle of bloodshed, fear, and criminality will only worsen.”
“The time has come to move beyond empty rhetoric. Our people deserve safety, dignity, and peace. I call on both the Federal and State Governments, as well as our traditional institutions, to work together in building a security architecture that protects ordinary citizens,”
Closing his remarks, Senator Achonu anchored his appeal on Igbo wisdom:
“E jiri mara Igbo bụ nkwado na nkwanye ùgwù — what defines us as a people is solidarity and respect. Let us not betray our own identity by turning against ourselves.”

We won’t allow hijacking of S-East PDP – Egwu

The national vice chairman, South East zone,of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Chief Chidibere Goodluck Egwu, has warned that any attempt to hijack the party in the zone would be resisted to ensure that PDP wins the 2027 election.

He explained that the PDP remains the platform of justice, equity, and democratic engagement, and will not allow its structures to be hijacked or manipulated by individuals with no legal or moral standing in the party.

Egwu stated this in a statement he signed with the zonal organising secretary, Hon.Mike Ahumibe, while reacting to an alleged stakeholders’ meeting scheduled to hold at the Government House, Enugu.

The party described the scheduled meeting as inappropriate, unconstitutional, and of no binding effect on the structures of PDP in the South East zone.

It warned that the former zonal chairman of the party, Chief Ali Odefa, had ceased to be a member of the PDP following his expulsion by his ward and local government chapters of the party in Ebonyi State.

The statement read; ’The attention of the South East Zonal leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been drawn to an invitation circulating to selected stakeholders, purporting to convene a “Crucial Stakeholders Meeting” of the PDP South East Zone on Wednesday, 17th September 2025, at the Lion Building, Government House, Enugu.

“The PDP South East Zone categorically states that such a meeting is inappropriate, unconstitutional, and of no binding effect on the structures of our party in the zone.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Constitution of our great party is explicit that the only person empowered to convene meetings of the South East Zonal organ of the party is the South East Zonal vice Chairman. That office is duly occupied by Chief Chidiebere Goodluck, who is the recognized leader of the PDP in the South East Zone.

“It is important to clarify that Chief Ali Odefa has ceased to be a member of the PDP following his valid expulsion by his Ward and Local Government Chapter, a decision which has since been upheld by a competent court of jurisdiction.

“Consequently, any attempt by him or his proxies to summon meetings in the name of the PDP South East Zone is not only illegal but a deliberate act of mischief aimed at misleading our members and causing avoidable confusion.

“The authentic Zonal leadership under Chief Chidiebere Goodluck is already making necessary arrangements, in collaboration with joint conveners drawn from the five South Eastern states, to summon a genuine South East Stakeholders Meeting.

This will be duly announced, with proper notice, and will be focused on uniting our members, consolidating our structures, and strengthening our collective resolve to reposition the PDP as the true voice of Ndi Igbo within the Nigerian federation.”

The PDP further urged the stakeholders across the South East Zone to ignore the meeting of September 17th, 2025,as it is not recognized by the party’s constitution.

APC courts Fubara ahead of power handover

Fubara

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is making moves to bring the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara into its party as the state prepares for a handover ceremony.

APC spokesman in Rivers, Darlington Nwauju, disclosed this yesterday while speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

Nwauju said. “If I were the governor of Rivers State, on my return on Thursday, I would announce my defection to the All Progressives Congress.

“I think the governor should join the APC, and we would gladly receive the governor into our party.” When asked if Fubara would lead the APC in Rivers if he defected, Nwauju responded that it was automatic.

“By the convention of our party, if he joins the All Progressives Congress, he becomes the leader of the party,” he added.

Nwauju also spoke about the administration of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.), who has overseen the state for the past six months.

“APC has not officially demanded that Ibas give an account of his stewardship for the past six months.

“The budget approval he got was from the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. There is a committee from the House of Representatives overseeing the period of emergency.

“I do expect that the committee should be able to do due diligence, come up with that report, and tell Nigerians what they found out. It is one of their core mandates in the business of legislations and lawmaking,” he stated.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu and Fubara are expected back in the country on Tuesday ahead of Thursday’s return to democratic rule in Rivers State.

Tinubu cut short his vacation in France and will return to Abuja, while Fubara is due back from London.

Their arrival comes as the state administrator intensifies preparations for Thursday’s handover, which will mark the end of emergency rule in Rivers.

Tinubu had travelled out of Nigeria on September 4 for his annual holiday in France and the UK, originally planned to last until September 10, but ended his trip earlier than scheduled.

DSS sues Sowore, X, Meta over Anti-Tinubu post

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count charge against former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, alongside social media platforms X Corp and Meta Incorporation, over posts critical of President Bola Tinubu.

The suit dated 16th September,2025, was lodged at the Federal High Court in Abuja after Sowore allegedly refused to delete certain posts about the President.

The charges were brought on behalf of the DSS and the Federal Government by M.B. Abubakar, Director of Public Prosecutions at the Federal Ministry of Justice, alongside four other counsel to the DSS –M.E. Ernest, U.B. Bulla, Dr. C.S. Eze, and E.G. Orubor.

Confirming the development in a Facebook post yesterday , Sowore wrote, “The State Security Service, alias @OfficialDSSNG today filed a 5-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja against ‘X’ (formerly Twitter Facebook, and myself. They claimed that because I called Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu a criminal, I have somehow committed a set of ‘novel’ offences they invented and spread across five counts.

“It’s hard to believe there’s anyone sensible left in these offices that should be making Nigeria work. Regardless, I will be present whenever this case is assigned for trial. #RevolutionNow.”

It was earlier reported that the human rights activist and African Action Congress candidate in the 2023 election vowed not to delete the controversial tweet, despite a request from the DSS to X demanding its removal.

Restating his stance, Sowore wrote, “This morning, X (formerly Twitter) officially contacted me about the despicable threat letter they received from the lawless DSS over my Tweet on Tinubu. One option I will NOT be taking is deleting that Tweet. Thank you, @X.”

He also published the message sent to him by X, which confirmed that the platform had received a legal request from the DSS concerning his post.

The message from X read, “Hello @YeleSowore. In the interest of transparency, we are writing to inform you that X has received a request from the Department of State Services regarding your X account, @YeleSowore, that claims the following content violates the law(s) of Nigeria. @YeleSowore, we have not taken any action on the reported content at this time as a result of this request.

“As X strongly believes in defending and respecting the voice of our users, it is our policy to notify our users if we receive a legal request from an authorised entity (such as law enforcement or a government agency) to remove content from their account. We provide notice whether or not the user lives in the country where the request originated. This page provides more information

“We understand that receiving this type of notice can be an unsettling experience. While X is not able to provide legal advice, we want you to have an opportunity to evaluate the request and, if you wish, take appropriate action to protect your interests.

“This may include seeking legal counsel and challenging the request in court, contacting relevant civil society organisations, voluntarily deleting the content (if applicable), or finding some other resolution.

“For more information on legal requests X receives from governments worldwide, please refer to this article on our Help Centre and our biannual Transparency Report.”

You don’t want Nigerians to enjoy cheaper fuel prices – Tinubu support group slams NUPENG

The Tinubu National Solidarity Movement has alleged that the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, (NUPENG), Petroleum Tanker Drivers, (PTD), and the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), are working against the interest of Nigerians in the ongoing face-off with Dangote Refinery.

According to the group, the unions do not want Nigerians to enjoy the cheaper fuel price made available by the Dangote Refinery.

The Tinubu support group stated this in a statement by its president and secretary, Mohammed Sani Akwashiki and Solomon Ikegwuru, respectively, yesterday.

This follows the ongoing battle between NUPENG and Dangote Refinery over labour activities after the oil firm commenced a nationwide products distribution scheme with its compressed natural gas trucks.

NUPENG had accused Dangote Refinery of planning to displace members and anti-labour practices.

NUPENG equally described Dangote Refinery’s fuel distribution scheme as a Greek gift.

However, Dangote Group had dismissed NUPENG’s stance, accusing the union of frustrating indigenous investors.

Reacting to the war of words between NUPENG and Dangote Refinery, TNSM urged the former to desist from sabotaging economic development under President Tinubu’s administration.

“However unscrupulous citizens and saboteurs masquerading as lovers of the citizens while exhibiting selfish and wicked tendencies. The President is trying to Open the country and make it favourable for investments that will grow and stabilise the economy. They, the unpatriotic elements, are working and putting spanners in the work.

“The latest being the current issues between Dangote and PTD and its allies. The PTD has constituted itself into law; otherwise, under which law are they given Dangote’s conditions for his truck drivers?

“PTD are more concerned about themselves as to losing jobs and livelihood. They don’t want competition; they don’t mind the benefits to Nigerians.

“PTD want to force Dangote truck drivers into their union so they can collect dues as to have money to squander.

“This is a clear case of lack of patriotism and sabotage. They are now threatening Nigerians with a nationwide strike. We are waiting for them. Enough of this nonsense; we will meet them on the streets. The NLC, the TUC and NUPEND are all involved in this sabotage,” the statement reads.

It would be recalled that on Monday, Dangote Group began a nationwide distribution scheme with an N820 ex-depot price and between N841 and N851 retail prices.

Relief for businesses as FG suspends 4% FOB import charge

There is relief for Nigerian businesses as the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the 4 per cent Free on Board, (FOB) import charge collection by the Nigeria Customs Service, (NCS), amid outrage from stakeholders.

The suspension was contained in a letter dated September 15, 2025, signed by the Permanent Secretary (Special Duties) at the Ministry of Finance, O. Omachi, on behalf of the Minister, Wale Edun, to the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service.

According to the minister, the suspension follows engagement with stakeholders, trade experts, and relevant government officials on the implementation of the 4 per cent FOB charge.

The Federal Government noted that it had become clear the 4 per cent FOB charge posed significant challenges to trade facilitation, the business environment, and economic stability in Nigeria.

According to the letter: “I write to direct the immediate suspension of the implementation of the collection of 4 per cent Free on Board (FOB) recently levied by the Nigeria Customs Service on all imported goods.

“Following extensive consultations with industry stakeholders, trade experts, and relevant government officials, it has become clear that the implementation of the 4 per cent FOB charge poses significant challenges to the Nigerian trade facilitation environment and economic stability.

Many importers and businesses have raised concerns about the increased financial burden this levy imposes, with potential adverse effects on inflation, trade competitiveness, and the overall business climate in Nigeria.

“This suspension will provide an opportunity for comprehensive stakeholder engagement and a thorough review of the levy’s framework and its broader economic implications. The Ministry of Finance looks forward to working closely with the Service and all relevant parties to devise a more equitable and efficient revenue structure that supports both revenue generation and economic growth and stability.”

Reports had it that in February, NCS suspended the FOB charges, but they were later reintroduced without announcement.

Manufacturers in Nigeria have fumed over the return of the FOB, calling for its suspension.

DSS disputes Nnamdi Kanu’s deteriorating sickness, opposes transfer to National Hospital

The Department of the State Service, (DSS), has disputed the deteriorating health claims made by the Biafra nation agitator, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to support and justify his new request for transfer from the custody of the Department of the State Service (DSS) to the National Hospital in Abuja.

The security agency while faulting the claims argued that the health issue of Kanu by his Medical Consultant was exaggerated and made in bad faith to send false health narrative challenges to the public.

In a 37-paragraph counter affidavit, opposing Kanu’s bid on movement to the Abuja hospital, DSS averred that it has one of the best medical facilities in the country with capable and qualified personnel that can handle the health issues of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The counter affidavit deposed to by Dr Mohammed Nasir, a Medical Officer with DSS averred that Kanu is enjoying maximum comfort in its custody, safe, secured and enjoying meals of his choice upon demands.

The agency asserted that at Kanu’s request, several medical Specialists from the National Hospital and the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital were brought for him to cater for his medical care.

DSS insisted that the Biafra nation agitator is in stable health condition and dismissed the claims of suffering deteriorating sickness.

According to the counter affidavit, in July 2021, a Consultant of Heartland Cardiovascular Consultants Limited Dr Onye Achillihu was engaged for the treatment of Kanu.

While expressing shock at how Prof Martin Aghaji, a retired Professor from the University of Nigeria, Nsuka, Enugu came about the deteriorating sickness of Kanu, DSS said that the exclusions of its Medical Officers who have been managing him without hitches, cast doubt on the good faith and credibility of the report and recommendations,

DSS recalled that in 2021 when Kanu was brought into its custody, he had hypertension of five years duration with hypertensive heart disease, low serum potassium levels and recurrent nose bleedings.

The agency said that Specialists were engaged with Dr Abiodun Olugbenga of the Federal Medical Center, Abuja as medical team leader and was at Kanu’s request, replaced by Dr Onye Achillihu who in the same circumstances, was in 2025 replaced by Professor Martin Aghaji.

Upon the take over, Aghaji was alleged to have disrupted the mode of treatment of Kanu by singularly making a sweeping adjustment and attending to him at the exclusions of DSS medical officers leading to a protest that was ignored.

It further asserted that a letter was written to Prof Aghaji on the consequences of his actions that can lead to blame of DSS on any negative event but, that same was also ignored by Aghaji.

Instead, Aghaji was reported to have on August 24, 2025 unilaterally caused a letter that the continued detention of Kanu without adequate access to health care facilities was improper.

It averred that before writing the letter, Prof Aghaji has never faulted, discredited or scored low, the facilities and standard of the DSS Medical Center.

DSS averred that the claims of Aghaji was speculative, raising an unjustifiable alarm medically and a mere emotional outburst not expected from a medical expert of his caliber.

The security agency therefore, argued that there was no need to admit Kanu to a private ward in public hospital as recommended by Aghaji in his letter.

It claimed that the recommended National hospital has no security facilities, personnel and infrastructure that can guarantee the safety and security of Kanu.

The secret police insisted that the identified ailments of Kanu are exaggerated as they are those that can be handled effectively at the DSS health facilities.

DSS averred that Kanu once jumped bail and his bail conditions revoked by court adding that it would take full militarization to secure safety and well-being of Kanu if moved to the National hospital as such, would also cause inconveniences to other patients and their families.

Kanu had through his lawyers led by Kanu Godwin Agabi SAN, filed a motion on notice seeking transfer from the DSS custody to the National hospital in Abuja.

The motion on notice was predicated on a letter and recommendations by Aghaji that the detainee was suffering deteriorating health issues.

Kanu, in the motion with charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, sought an order of the court for the DSS to move him from their custody to the National Hospital.

He said that examination carried out on him, revealed issues to his health, including organs such as his pancreas and liver as well as an emerging lump underneath his armpit and dangerously low levels of potassium.

His younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu claimed on his behalf that “The doctors have recommended that he be moved to the National Hospital as an interim measure to afford him medical attention and forestall further decline.

“The applicant’s health is seriously deteriorating considering the nature of his confinement, thereby making more pressing, the need to bring this application and have the same heard by a vacation judge,” Agabi said.

He alleged that a letter by the doctors to the Director-General of the DSS, advising the transfer of Kanu had gone without answer.

He said the urgency of the matter had, therefore, necessitated the filing of the application as a measure to arrest further decline of Kanu’s health while spirited efforts were being made to treat him.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday, however, declined to hear the motion for transfer from the custody of DSS to National Hospital in Abuja.

The presiding judge, Justice Musa Liman, said his fiat to sit as a vacation judge had ended on Monday and therefore lacked the jurisdiction to entertain such a new matter for hearing.

Doctor caught ‘making love’ during surgery escapes punishment

A doctor who left a patient under general anaesthetic during surgery to engage in sexual activity with a nurse has been found to pose a “very low risk” of repeating such misconduct, a medical tribunal has ruled.

According to a British online newspaper, The Independent on Tuesday, Dr. Suhail Anjum, a 44-year-old married father of three, was discovered in a compromising position with the unnamed nurse by a shocked colleague at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester.

The consultant anaesthetist had told staff he was taking a bathroom break, but instead went to another theatre, where the incident occurred.

Instead, Anjum went to another operating theatre – used partly as a storage room – at the hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, where sexual activity took place with Nurse C on September 16, 2023.

The matter was reported to the management, and Anjum was dismissed in February 2024 following an internal investigation.

Last week, he told a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service disciplinary tribunal he wanted to resume his career in the UK and relocate with his family after they had moved to his native Pakistan, where he worked as a doctor.

On Monday, the tribunal determined that Dr Anjum “had put his own interests before those of the patient and his colleagues” and the incident involving Nurse C “had the potential to distract Dr Anjum… and he may not have been able to give his full attention to the patient’s care”.

Tribunal chairwoman Rebecca Miller said his actions, while they did not harm the patient’s safety, were “significant enough to amount to misconduct that was serious”.

However, she was satisfied that Dr Anjum was determined not to repeat his past misconduct and considered the risk of repetition to be “very low”.

Miller said: “The tribunal considered that members of the public and the profession would understand the high level of scrutiny to which Dr Anjum had been subjected, and that a finding of serious misconduct would weigh heavily upon him.

“The tribunal was satisfied that this public finding of serious misconduct was sufficient to maintain public confidence in the profession and proper professional standards, and that there was not a necessity to make a finding of impaired fitness to practise for that purpose.”

No sanction will be imposed on the doctor, and the hearing will reconvene in Manchester on Tuesday to decide whether to issue a warning on Anjum’s registration.

He cautioned the sanitary inspectors not to use their positions or offices as an avenue to extort money from the citizens, but rather to insist on the payment of established environmental default fines only.
Prince Kanu revealed that following the state government’s decision to go green, in view of the environmental benefits involved, the Abia State Executive Council has approved the statewide tree planting campaign.
The Information boss highlighted the importance of tree planting to include: improvement on the climatic conditions in the state, reduction of erosion, reduction in flooding, positioning of the state as a modern and sustainable state among others.

Adeyanju begs Patience Jonathan to withdraw jewellery theft case

A human-rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has appealed to former First Lady Patience Jonathan to discontinue the long-running case against her former domestic staff following the death of one of the accused in custody.

The lawyer made the plea in an open letter titled “Open Letter by Deji Adeyanju to Dame Patience Jonathan after the death of Her Former Domestic Staff Standing Trial for Theft of Jewellery in Bayelsa Prison,” posted on his X handle yesterday.

Adeyanju said Sahabi Liman fell seriously ill in prison and subsequently died.

He  argued the death underscores that “justice delayed so severely becomes no justice at all.”

He said the prolonged detention has taken a heavy toll on the accused and their families, and warned that punishment should be proportionate to the offence.

The letter reads in full: “For more than five years now, fifteen of your former domestic staff have been standing trial over allegations of missing jewellery. They were arrested in 2019, kept in custody, and have since been dragged through the courts without resolution. Along the way, one of them, Sahabi Liman, fell seriously ill in prison and has now died. That death is a reminder that justice delayed so severely becomes no justice at all. It should also make us look again at the entire case and the toll it has taken on all involved.  “This is no longer about the stolen jewellery, but about people who have been locked up and suffering for too long. Even if they had been found guilty, they would not have spent this long behind bars for such an offence. And if they are innocent, then we have all watched them suffer for nothing. Punishment must have proportion, and what is happening here is far beyond proportion.

“I therefore appeal to you as a mother figure in our nation to discontinue this case as an act of fairness, to let compassion guide your decision and allow these ex-workers a chance to rebuild their lives.” It was reported  that 15 aides of the former first lady were held in the Okaka Custodial Centre, Bayelsa State, for allegedly stealing jewellery from the former First Lady.

Those affected are Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, Tamunokuro Abaku, Emmanuel Aginwa, Erema Deborah, Precious Kingsley, Tamunosiki Achese, Sunday Reginald, Vivian Golden, Emeka Benson, Boma Oba, Salomi Wareboka, and Sahabi Lima.

The defendants, brought before the High Court of Bayelsa in 2019, were accused of stealing seven gold bangles and jewellery, five Samsung air conditioners, two sets of upholstery chairs, and six Samsung flat-screen televisions valued at N200m.

The matter is still in court.

NIN-SIM linkage reduces fraud, boosts Nigeria’s national security – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu yesterday said the linkage of the National Identification Number,(NIN), with SIM cards has drastically reduced fraud and improved national security.

Tinubu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, spoke at the 2025 National Day of Identity organised by the National Identity Management Commission in Abuja.

“Working with the NCC, NIMC has enforced the NIN-SIM linkage, which has significantly reduced fraud and enhanced national security,” he said.

The President noted that identity is now more than a record, describing it as the foundation of citizenship, the gateway to opportunity, and the anchor for national security.

He added that the National Identification Number, supported by Public Key Infrastructure, has become central to Nigeria’s digital transformation, making transactions more secure and building citizens’ trust in government and private institutions.

“Without PKI, digital interactions remain vulnerable. Without PKI, citizens cannot fully trust that their data and transactions are secure. But with PKI, Nigeria can build an ecosystem where trust is guaranteed, fraud is reduced, services are streamlined, and every citizen can engage with government and private institutions with confidence,” Tinubu said.

Commending the leadership of NIMC under Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Tinubu said the commission had enrolled over 126 million Nigerians, cleared a backlog of 2.5 million records, deployed over 800 mobile enrolment devices nationwide, and integrated with 125 partner agencies, including the Immigration Service, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, and the National Population Commission.

The president also noted that the commission has boosted efficiency by training staff, providing modern tools, setting up a world-class customer care centre and an audiovisual studio, while also improving welfare through salary adjustments, promotions for over 2,800 personnel, and rehabilitating enrolment centres nationwide.

He also said that the commission has clamped down on fraud with the arrest of over 30 operators, closure of illegal centres, maintenance of ISO 27001:2022 certification, and the launch of a verification service that guarantees 99.9 per cent uptime.

According to him, the NIN has already become indispensable for services such as pension verification, educational loans, business registration, healthcare, tax records, elections, and social investment programmes. He said the number was not just an administrative tool but “the common key that unlocks opportunity, strengthens governance, and builds trust.”

While noting the progress made, Tinubu stressed that his administration was determined to enforce the Mandatory Use Regulation for NIN across all sectors, insisting that the policy was vital for securing the nation, strengthening the economy, and ensuring digital inclusion.

In his remarks, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said Nigeria is advancing steadily in building a secure identity system, describing digital identity infrastructure as essential to national security and economic sovereignty.

Tunji-Ojo said government agencies are working to integrate Public Key Infrastructure into Nigeria’s identity ecosystem.

The minister added that the Ministry of Interior would continue to modernise its services, expand secure enrolment, and ensure that identity-driven services are delivered with “dignity, protection and predictability.”

He noted that current investments in PKI and data centres would enable Nigeria to participate securely in global digital commerce and diaspora engagement.

Tunji-Ojo reiterated that identity must be treated as strategic infrastructure, adding that the newly established Bola Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex will support biometric production and secure border and passport systems.

Also speaking, the Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, said the National Identification Number had become a transformative tool for inclusion, economic empowerment, and national development.

She revealed that over 123 million Nigerians have been enrolled in the national identity database, noting that the Commission has partnered with more than 50 organisations across sectors, including education, healthcare, correctional services, and diaspora outreach, to deepen integration and widen access.

Coker-Odusote said the use of PKI had greatly enhanced the privacy, security, and usability of citizens’ data.

She added that enrolment waiting times had been cut nearly in half, with identity services now extended to inmates, internally displaced persons, and Nigerians living abroad.

According to her, digital identity is already transforming lives, citing examples such as over 449,000 students accessing loans worth N86.35bn through NELFUND and verified farmers receiving subsidised agricultural support.

She also addressed concerns over data security, stating that despite attempts, NIMC’s database remains uncompromised.

“By documenting each citizen and resident, we are not only ensuring precise identity verification but also enabling better planning for security, disaster response, and economic strategies. With this integrated system, tracking perpetrators of crimes becomes significantly easier, helping law enforcement agencies respond more effectively to threats, both natural and man-made,” she added.

NAPTIP rescues eight stolen children from Delta orphanage

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, (NAPTIP), yesterday said it rescued eight children suspected of having been stolen from northern states and trafficked to the south.

This followed a raid on a popular orphanage in the Delta state capital, Asaba.

NAPTIP’s spokesperson, Vincent Adekoye, revealed the development in a statement he signed and released yesterday titled, ‘NAPTIP rescues eight suspected stolen children from a popular orphanage in Asaba.’

The agency said the operation, conducted with the Department of State Services,(DSS), the Nigerian police and local civil society groups, followed years of complaints from parents in Kano and neighbouring states over missing children.

According to the statement, syndicates posing as traders allegedly lured children aged between two and 10 from communities and transported them south, often vanishing overnight.

“In 2017, some parents in Kano and other States in the Region raised an alarm on the unwholesome activities of some syndicates who move from one Community to another other luring children mostly between the ages of two years to 10 years and trafficking them to other parts of the country.

“The investigation revealed that the syndicates operating under the guise of traders typically work in two batches.

“While a syndicate normally lives briefly within such a Community, gets used to the children, and later disappears with them, others come in as traders and operate from parks and terminals, where they lure unaccompanied children on their way to school and errands,” it read.

In the Asaba orphanage, operatives found over 70 children, including newborns, though only eight were confirmed as those abducted from Kano.

They have since been reunited with their families, the agency confirmed.

“The rescued children were identified through their pictures and other features by the representative of the concerned parents from Kano State, out of the over 70 children found inside the Orphanage, including neonates,” the statement quoted NAPTIP’s Director General, Binta Bello, as saying.

“NAPTIP is seriously worried over the unwholesome activities of these so–called orphanages and Care Homes. Imagine over 70 children inside an orphanage, and the number keeps increasing daily.

“The big question is, where are these children from?” she queried.

The activities of orphanages in Nigeria have increasingly come under public scrutiny in recent years, following investigations by journalists and campaigners into child trafficking rings.

In 2023, investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo exposed how some facilities had been used as cover for the sale of babies, prompting calls for stricter regulation of children’s homes.

NAPTIP said cases of child kidnapping incidents climaxed in 2022 when another set of over 25 children were allegedly lured and trafficked out of the northern region by the same suspected syndicate.

This, it said, prompted a public outcry from stakeholders, including members of the Civil Society Organisation in the Communities within the states.

In a letter dated 15th December, 2022, a Non – Non-Governmental Organisation, Protection Against The Abduction of Our Children, in a petition addressed to the Director General of NAPTIP, titled, ‘Demand for Justice and Address the Child Abduction in Kano State and Nigeria’ sought the assistance of the Agency in rescuing the abducted children.

The organisation said, “On behalf of over 200 parents who are the victims of the series of abducted children, past and present, we are writing to seek your support and demand justice following the terrible experience we are facing.”

“We, the parents, are in serious pain. Some of us are already hospitalised, while others passed away due to the shock of the children abducted and the continuous uncertainty and suspense daily waiting for the report whether they will be found dead or alive”, one beleaguered parent lamented.

After a series of interactions with the Kano State Government through the State Ministry of Women Affairs, NAPTIP said it commenced a discreet investigation to ascertain the location of the suspected trafficked children to rescue them unhurt.

“This led to the intelligence-driven operations in Anambra and Delta States,” Adekoye wrote.

“While the operation in Awka, Anambra State, was unsuccessful as the syndicate reportedly moved the children away to an unknown location overnight, the operatives moved to Asaba and rescued eight of the suspected trafficked children from one of the popular orphanages located inside Asaba, the Delta State capital.

Bello accused the operator of the orphanage of evading investigation by turning to social media to spread falsehoods against the agency, instead of presenting himself to NAPTIP’s Kano Zonal Command.

She clarified that operatives met the owner’s wife during the raid but did not arrest her since she was not the target, and that contact information was left behind for the owner to reach the agency.

“On the day of the operation, our Operatives met the wife of the Owner of the Orphanage there. She was not arrested because she was not our target.

“She was informed of the allegation, and the necessary contact was left behind so that the Owner can reach us,” Bello explained.

She added, “Those children were rescued and taken to the necessary arm of the Government in Kano State.

“They have been duly identified and reunited with their families.

“So, the raw falsehood based on religious labelling being sold to the public through social media by this unpatriotic individual is regrettable, and it will not distract us from carrying out our mandate.”

The NAPTIP chief urged state ministries of women affairs across the country to scrutinise the activities of orphanages and care homes, pledging that the agency would continue its oversight role in line with the Trafficking in Persons (Control of Activities of Organisations and Centres) Regulations 2019.

She commended the DSS, the police, and other partners for their collaboration, stressing that the operation underscored NAPTIP’s commitment to combating child trafficking, protecting vulnerable children, and ensuring justice in line with the law.

Nigerian jailed in US over $6m inheritance fraud

A United States court has sentenced a Nigerian, Ehis Lawrence Akhimie, to over eight years in prison for his role in a transnational inheritance fraud scheme that defrauded more than 400 elderly victims of over $6m.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, in a statement on Monday, said Akhimie, 41, was sentenced on September 11 to 97 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to conspiracy charges.

According to court filings as indicated in the statement, Akhimie and his accomplices sent personalised letters to victims in the U.S., posing as bank officials in Spain.

The letters claimed the recipients were entitled to multimillion-dollar inheritances from relatives who had purportedly died overseas.

Victims were told that before they could access the inheritance, they had to pay various fees, including delivery charges, taxes, and other payments to avoid “government scrutiny”.

The funds, however, were siphoned through a network of intermediaries, including former fraud victims in the U.S., who were manipulated into acting as conduits for the syndicate.

U.S. prosecutors said no victim received any inheritance. Instead, the fraudsters enriched themselves while targeting some of the most vulnerable members of society.

“Akhimie and his co-conspirators collected money victims sent in response to the fraudulent letters through a complex web of U.S.-based former victims, whom the defendants convinced to receive money and forward to the defendants or persons associated with them. Victims who sent money never received any purported inheritance funds.

In pleading guilty, Akhimie admitted to defrauding over $6 million from more than 400 victims, many of whom were elderly or otherwise vulnerable,” the statement read.

U.S. Attorney Jason Quiñones described the offence as a betrayal of trust, “Schemes like this steal not only money but dignity from our seniors. Our Office stands with victims, ensures their voices are heard, and will relentlessly pursue those who prey on them,” he said.

Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate of the Justice Department’s Civil Division stressed the role of global collaboration in tackling cross-border fraud.

“The Justice Department will continue to pursue, prosecute, and bring to justice transnational criminals responsible for defrauding U.S. consumers, wherever they are located. This case is a testament to the critical role of international collaboration in tackling transnational crime.

“I want to thank our U.S. law enforcement partners, as well as those who assisted across the globe, including the National Crime Agency and Crown Prosecution Service of the United Kingdom, for their outstanding contributions to this case,” Shumate said.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which investigated the case alongside Homeland Security Investigations, also pledged to maintain its crackdown on financial fraud.

Acting Inspector in Charge, Bladismir Rojo, said, “We are committed to protecting American consumers from being defrauded by transnational criminal organisations. We will continue to work with the Department of Justice to deliver justice.”

Similarly, Acting Special Agent in Charge Ray Rede of HSI Arizona added: “Defrauding the elderly and other vulnerable populations is a betrayal of not just trust but of humanity. Justice will prevail, and those who exploit others for personal gain will be held accountable.”

Akhimie is the eighth defendant sentenced in the sprawling case. In April, another Nigerian, Okezie Bonaventure Ogbata, who was extradited from Portugal, was handed the same 97-month sentence by District Court Judge Roy Altman.

At the time, Judge Altman described the offence as “an incredibly serious crime” that demanded strong punishment to protect “the most vulnerable, the least protected members of our society.

Other defendants had previously received jail terms in related proceedings before U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams.

The Department of Justice said the probe benefited from assistance provided by Europol, and authorities in the UK, Spain and Portugal, alongside its Office of International Affairs.

The case has again spotlighted Nigeria’s recurring link with cross-border fraud. U.S. authorities have, in recent years, prosecuted several Nigerians in high-profile scams, ranging from internet fraud to romance scams.

2025 Ahiajoku lecture rescheduled to November 28th

… As Organizers say new date reflects historical roots of Ahiajoku Festival

By Clem Iwejuru

The Imo state government has officially announced the rescheduling of the prestigious 2025 Ahiajoku Lecture Festival, moving the cultural and intellectual celebration to its traditional November time frame. The announcement, made through a press statement dated, September 16, 2025, confirms that the 45th edition of the Festival will now take place from November 27th to 28th, 2025.

“Governor Hope Uzodimma, CON, GSSRS, has approved the new dates, as part of an ongoing renaissance and rebranding initiative for the celebrated cultural event. The decision honors the founding vision established by the late Governor Samuel Onunaka Mbakwe, and the founding fathers of the Ahiajoku Lecture Series”, the statement by the planning committee reads.

Accordingly, the festival will commence with a colloquium on Thursday, November 27, 2025 (Afor) day in the Igbo calendar) at the Ahiajoku Convention Centre in Owerri. This will be followed by the main lecture on Friday, November 28, 2025 (Nkwo day) at the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu Conference Centre, also in Owerri. Both events are scheduled to begin promptly at 11:00 AM.

The highlight of this year’s festival will be the Ahiajoku lecture delivered by His Lordship, Most Rev. Prof. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese. Bishop Onah will speak on the timely and thought-provoking topic: “The Future of Igbo Economy Amidst the Challenges of Insecurity: A Call for Paradigm Shift,” addressing critical contemporary issues facing the Igbo community.

The change in date represents a return to the festival’s historical roots, as the Ahiajoku Lecture was inaugurated and traditionally celebrated during the last week of November. This restoration is expected to strengthen the event’s legacy as the foremost platform for Igbo intellectual, cultural, and economic renaissance, connecting the celebration more closely with its original cultural significance.

The planning committee, chaired by Chief Gary Nnachi Enwo Igariwey with Sir Stanley Amuchie as deputy chairman, has assured all invitees that venue arrangements and other earlier preparations remain unchanged. The organizers emphasize their commitment to maintaining the high standards expected of this landmark cultural celebration.

Hon. (Nze) Ray Emeana, Director General of the Ahiajoku Centre and Secretary of the 2025 Ahiajoku Planning Committee, expressed the directorate’s pride in hosting “Ndi Igbo and friends of Igbo heritage from across the world” at this significant edition of the festival. The event continues to serve as a crucial gathering point for the global Igbo community, promoting cultural preservation and intellectual discourse.

Ekong, still our Hero

One blunder will not erase all the good Captain William Paul Troost – Ekong did serving Nigeria. A committed patriot, this defender abandoned The Netherlands, his mother’s country of birth where he rose as a junior international, to switch allegiance to Nigeria in 2015.

I remember his exact words when Oluwasina Okeleji of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) interviewed him in 2019, just before the African Cup of Nations. “I think the decision to play for Nigeria has to be the best ever for me,” the central defender said.

Troost – Ekong needs our support at this time. The Super Eagles have had a very disappointing run trying to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Things got worse with a 1-1 draw with Bafana Bafana in Bloomfontein, a match that meant the whole world to Nigerians. Sadly, the skipper scored an own.

The same South Africans received maximum punishment from Troost – Ekong, previously. At the Egypt 2019 African Nations Cup, he broke their hearts with a last minute goal to put Nigeria through to the semifinals. And his first AFCON medal, a bronze, followed after the loss to Algeria’s Desert Foxes.

At the Cote d’Ivoire 2023 Championships, Ekong punished Bafana Bafana the more. In the semifinals which was decided in Bouake, he scored twice. The first goal was through a penalty in open play, the second came during the penalty shoot out that ensued after scores stood at 1-1 after regulation and over time.

The Nigerian captain left Abidjan as a hero. Voted Player of the Tournament, he made the CAF Team of the Tournament and became the first defender in the History of the AFCON to score five goals. Three of those goals were scored in Cote d’Ivoire.

It takes a great player to score from the penalty spot against the hosts, who had beaten Guinea Equatorial 2-0 in the opening match. He also scored against the Elephants in the grand finale before they fought back to lift the cup with a 2-1 victory.

Where Troost – Ekong excelled was in the penalty shoot out against Bafana Bafana whose goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams, set a Championships record of saving four penalty kicks in a single match. Against the Eagles, a superior William emerged.

Troost – Ekong scored twice against Williams and the goals came through penalty kicks. The man who saved four penalty kicks against Cabo Verde was beaten mercilessly by Ekong. It was the Nigerian goalie, Stanley Nwabali that made great saves. However, CAF picked the South African as Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

Bafana Bafana took the Eagles to a sub standard pitch in their bid to steal a World Cup ticket. The muddy pitch was responsible for the own goal that came off Troost – Ekong’s leg. This makes me see that goal as more of a South African ploy to go to North America through the backdoor.

In a very strange arrangement, Bafana Bafana will end up playing more home matches than the other teams in their group. Zimbabwe and Lesotho, whose fields are not worse than what we saw in Bloomfontein, and both of them are Southern Africans, were forced to play their home games in South Africa.

Football lovers are curious to know why Benin Republic, Nigeria’s next door neighbours, who are also in the same group, play their home matches in Abidjan and not Uyo. Tongues are wagging. The CAF president is a South African, the fixtures reflect more politics across Sub – Regional influence.

It should not be crucifixion time for Troost – Ekong. Error is part of football. Ronaldinho scored for Ghana, against Brazil at the Germany 2006 World Cup. Captain Joseph Yobo netted for France against Nigeria at Brazil 2014. Oghenekaro Etebo suffered similar fate when Croatia beat Nigeria 2-0 at Russia 2018.

The good news is that Nigerian fans have shown maturity. They understand what it means to be in this tight corner. Troost – Ekong feels worse. However, the good thing is that he is safe. Colombia, where Andres Escobar died in 1994, shortly after an own goal loss to the United States, is far away, in South America.

I see Troost – Ekong leading the Super Eagles to AFCON victory in Morocco, later in 2026. Mark my words. We cannot abandon a true hero because of dirty Bloomfontein. Godwin Odiye won  gold in 1980 after finding himself in this same position in 1977.

Eric Chelle should encourage his captain. The NFF would be making a terrible mistake by sacking the coach. Time is too short. Let him continue to manage the national team. The squad that played in Bloomfontein is good enough to win the next African Nations Cup. Bring on Maduka Okoye and Victor Osimhen, wonders shall happen.

How can I dismiss Troost – Ekong, a patriot who suffered with the Dream Team in 2016 but smiled home with a bronze. This same star, a leader in deed and spirit, is still relevant. Experience does matter. Stephen Keshi lifted the AFCON trophy at old soccer age in 1994.

Yobo did the same in 2013. Troost – Ekong is here, in 2026.

Catholic priest, Wilfred Ezemba, kidnapped by gunmen

The Parish Priest of St. Paul Catholic Parish, Agaliga-Efabo in Olamaboro local government area of Kogi state, Rev. Fr. Wilfred Ezemba, has been abducted by armed men.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, September 13, 2025, in Imane, also within Olamaboro LGA.

Our correspondent gathered that the cleric may have been abducted alongside other yet-to-be-identified commuters along the Imane–Ogugu Road.

The abduction has thrown the Catholic community in the local government into confusion, as the kidnappers were yet to establish contact with the church or the family of the priest.

Another Catholic priest in the area, who identified himself simply as Fr. Michael, expressed shock over the incident.

“We are confused because since his abduction three days ago, his abductors have not made any contact to demand a ransom. But we are, however, confident that Almighty God will deliver him safely from the grip of the kidnappers.

We believe strongly in the efficacy of our prayers, he will eventually regain his freedom.”

A report by LEADERSHIP noted that security agencies — including the Nigeria Police, the military, and the Kogi East Neighbourhood Watch (KENW) — have launched a search operation, combing bushes and forests in pursuit of the kidnappers.

This is the second kidnapping in the area within one week.

“One Barr. A. B. Shaibu was kidnapped on 7-09-2025, Sunday evening, by gunmen between Etieke and Okugoh in the same local government. His family was said to have paid an unspecified amount of ransom before he was released to his family last Thursday,” a source told our correspondent.

When contacted, the spokesman of the Kogi State Police Command, SP Williams OvyeAya, said he was yet to receive official information on the case.

“I’m yet to get the information. However, I will find out from our men on the ground in that local government and get back to you,” SP Aya said.

The abduction comes barely two weeks after the Pastor of Christian Evangelical Fellowship of Nigeria (CEFN) Church, Pastor Friday Adehi, and Gabriel Ezekiel of the same church were kidnapped shortly after a Sunday service.

Court orders arrest of 2 lawyers over alleged forgery, impersonation

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, sitting at Apo, yesterday, issued a bench warrant against two lawyers charged with forgery and impersonation.

Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie made the arrest order following repeated failure of the defendants- Victor Giwa, and Ibitade Bukola- to appear before the court to enter their plea to the charge that was preferred against them by the Inspector General of Police.

In the charge marked: CR/150/25, the duo were accused of conspiring to forge a legal document purportedly issued by the chambers of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Prof. Awa U. Kalu, with the intent to mislead the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF.

According to the three-count charge, the alleged offence occurred on June 28, 2024.

The prosecution alleged that the defendants forged and signed a letter on the official letterhead of the SAN, requesting the AGF to suspend a scheduled arraignment.

The contentious letter, titled “Urgent and Solemn Appeal to Suspend the Arraignment of Our Colleague Victor Giwa on Charge Number: CR/222/2023”, was allegedly addressed to the AGF.

It allegedly sought intervention of the AGF to halt an arraignment that was scheduled before trial Justice Samira Bature of the high court.

The IGP, in the charge, maintained that the two lawyers committed offences punishable under Section 97, 179 and 364 of the Penal Code Act, 2004

At the resumed proceeding of the court on Monday, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Eristo Asaph, noted that the defence lawyer told the court that the 1st defendant was bereaved, hence his absence for the scheduled arraignment.

The prosecution counsel further noted that it was on the strength of an application by the defendant that the case was adjourned.

He, therefore, wondered why the duo were also absent in court for the case to proceed.

Responding, the defence counsel, Mr. Ogbu Aboje, told the court that the 1st defendant, Giwa, wrote a letter that was accompanied with a medical report dated September 3, indicating that he had a health challenge he described as “Degenerative disorder of the lumber vertebrae,” in addition to his hypertensive condition.

Tinubu cuts short two-week vacation, returns to Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has decided to cut short his two-week work vacation and is expected to return today.

This was disclosed via a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga titled: “President Tinubu ends vacation ahead of schedule, returns to Abuja tomorrow (today).

The statement read: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has concluded his work vacation ahead of schedule and will return to Abuja on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, to resume official duties.

“The President departed for France on September 4, 2025, to spend part of his annual holiday and was initially scheduled to divide the period between France and the United Kingdom.

“Last week in Paris, President Tinubu held a private luncheon with his French counterpart, President Emmanuel Macron, at the Élysée Palace. Both leaders reviewed key areas of cooperation between Nigeria and France and agreed to deepen the partnership for mutual prosperity and global stability.”

It would be recalled that on September 4, the presidency in a statement announcing the President’s vacation, said:

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja today, September 4, to commence a working vacation in Europe, as part of his 2025 annual leave. The vacation will last 10 working days.

“President Tinubu will spend the period between France and the UK and then return to the country.”

FCT minister warns pilgrims against absconding

The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr Mariya Mahmoud, has cautioned Christian pilgrims travelling to Israel and the Kingdom of Jordan to uphold national values. She also warned them to avoid any act of absconding, stressing the importance of representing Nigeria with dignity.

Speaking during a pre-departure orientation in Abuja for more than 142 intending pilgrims, Mahmoud urged them to be good ambassadors of Nigeria and maintain personal and national dignity while in the Holy Land.

“Stringent measures have been instituted to prevent abscondment and any act capable of bringing disrepute to the country,” she said.

She also called on the pilgrims to pray for President Bola Tinubu and his Renewed Hope Agenda team, urging them to support the government’s efforts to improve national governance and unity.

“For those contemplating absconding or engaging in activities harmful to our country’s image, I advise you to reconsider.

“The Federal Government has put proactive measures in place to counter such efforts,” Mahmoud warned.

The Acting Director of the FCT Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Gloria Dandam, reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance for abscondment.

She stated that guarantors of pilgrims who failed to return would be held legally accountable.

“We don’t anticipate any abscondment, but if it happens, the guarantors will be arrested and prosecuted.

“They signed legal documents and will be held responsible,” she said.

Dandam also noted that the FCT had maintained an excellent record in recent years, with no cases of pilgrims failing to return.

CVR: 4.4 million Nigerians pre-registered – INEC gives fresh update

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has released further update on the ongoing online and in-person registration of voters.

The Commission gave the latest update in a statement signed by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee.

On the online pre-registration, INEC said as of Sunday, 14th September, 2025, a total of 4,445,505 Nigerians have pre-registered online in four weeks since the commencement of the exercise on 18th August, 2025.

It said that the figure at the end of Week Four shows that 2,141,294 (48.17%) are male and 2,304,211 (51.83%) are female.

“In terms of age and occupation, the majority 2,924,643 (65.79%) are between the ages of 18 and 34 while 1,112,344 (25.02%) are students,” INEC added.

On the completed registration, the Commission said that as of Friday, 12th September, 2025, the combined figures of the completed online pre-registration and the physical (in-person) registration is 509,929 out of which 229,758 (45.06%) are male and 280,171 (54.94%) are female. “Detailed addresses of the centres have already been uploaded to our official platforms,” the statement said.

Police nab 48-year-old man for defiling minor in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 48-year-old man, Emmanuel George, for allegedly defiling a 12-year-old girl in Port Harcourt.

The incident occurred on September 6 at Mini Orlu, off Ada-George Road, where the victim, who was on holiday with her aunt, was attacked while returning from an errand.

In a statement yesterday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said George, a native of Akwa Ibom but resident in Port Harcourt, lured the child into a stationary tricycle before assaulting her.

She said, “The suspect dragged the victim into a stationary tricycle, popularly called Keke Napep, tied her hands, covered her mouth to prevent her from raising an alarm, and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her before fleeing the scene.”

Iringe-Koko explained that operatives attached to the CP Strike Force mobilised swiftly after receiving a distress call and took the girl to the Police Hospital for medical examination.

“At about 2200hrs the same day, the suspect was apprehended through coordinated intelligence,” she said.

The police spokesperson disclosed that exhibits recovered from the scene included a bundle of rope allegedly used to tie the victim’s hands, a wrap of fufu, and the blue tricycle.

“The suspect voluntarily confessed to the crime during interrogation.

“He is currently in custody alongside the exhibits while a discreet investigation continues,” Iringe-Koko added.

The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has reaffirmed the command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of crime in the state face the full wrath of the law.

He further urged parents and guardians to watch over their children and wards closely, as such predators are within our neighborhood

Police to sanction officers over ₦300,000 extortion in Edo

The Edo State Police Command has recovered N300,000 extorted from a furniture maker by the officers attached to the Oba Market Area Command, Benin City.

This was contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Moses Yamu, yesterday.

Yamu said that officers involved have been detained and would face disciplinary procedures in accordance with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.

The statement read, “The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the public that it has taken decisive action, following a video circulated on social media by an influencer in Edo State alleging the extortion of the sum ₦300,000 from a furniture maker by some officers attached to Oba Market Area Command, Benin City.

“The officers involved have been promptly identified, the money has been fully recovered and returned to the victim, while the said officers have been detained and are to face disciplinary procedures in accordance with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.

“In addition, stern administrative measures have been taken against the Oba Market Area Command to ensure professionalism, discipline, and respect for the rights of citizens in the discharge of their duties.”

He said the command under Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, urged members of the public to report any unprofessional conduct by officers and men of the command to the Public Complaints Bureau or the Complaints Response Unit through 08150999335 and 08100389992.

He added, “The Command assures the good people of Edo State that it remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability in service delivery.

The command also appreciated the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5 Headquarters, AIG Salman Dogo, for his unwavering support in entrenching accountable and transparent policing in the zone.

It would be recalled that in May, the Police Force commenced disciplinary proceedings against six officers, including their supervisory officer, a Chief Superintendent of Police, following their involvement in a viral extortion video along the Benin Bypass.

The NPF, in a statement on its official X.com page, stated that the six officers were brought before the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who described their actions as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable.”

Following this, Egbetokun ordered the commencement of internal disciplinary procedures, consistent with the Force’s zero-tolerance policy for extortion and misconduct.

Four dead, six rescued in Lagos building collapse

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA has confirmed that six persons were rescued and four died following the recent collapse of a three-storey building in the state. The building is located at No. 325, Bornu Street, Ebute Meta, Lagos State. At the scene of the incident, Mr Olatunde Akinsanya, Director of Operations, LASEMA, told newsmen that the agency received a distress call at 6:00 pm on Friday and immediately deployed a team to the scene.

“Emergency scene management is highly complex, and casualty figures often change as rescue operations progress. “So far, six people have been rescued alive, while four have unfortunately lost their lives,” Akinsanya said.

He said that coordinated efforts of multiple agencies helped to contain the situation and ensure a timely rescue. He listed the agencies to include the Lagos State Building Control Agency, the police, the Lagos State Fire Service, and the Federal Road Safety Corps. Akinsanya said that in spite of the magnitude of the collapse and the number of people in the building at the time, the swift intervention of the agencies prevented much loss of lives. “The emergency services of Lagos State, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, have proven to be highly effective and efficient. As operations continue, we will keep updating the public.

“We urge Lagosians to remain calm and assured that the state government has state-of-the-art equipment to manage situations like this,” he added.

Rivers: Court strikes out suit challenging emergency rule, LG election

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, has struck out a suit filed by Port Harcourt-based legal practitioner, Williams Abayomi Stanley, against President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Sole Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, and its Chairman, over the conduct of the recent Local government council election in the state.

Stanley had challenged the legality of President Tinubu’s appointment of a State Sole Administrator, who in turn nominated the Chairman and members of RSIEC to conduct the August 30 local government council election.

Presiding Judge, Justice Stephen Jumbo, in his ruling on the issue of locus standi of the claimant and the jurisdiction of the court, held that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit.

He explained that under the constitution, only the Supreme Court has exclusive jurisdiction to hear such suits during an emergency rule.

Justice Jumbo also ruled that the claimant lacked locus standi to institute the suit against the defendants, stating that he failed to show a personal interest beyond public interest, or any civil rights and obligations violated by the defendants’ actions.

The judge further held that the claimant did not provide sufficient proof of injury, threat of injury, or hardship he would suffer if the issues in his originating summons were not addressed.

He added that the interest the claimant sought to protect was not his personal interest, but that of the state governor, a position he does not occupy.

On the conduct of the August 30 local government election, Justice Jumbo declared that the exercise was constitutional and legitimate, noting that it was conducted by RSIEC and not by the governor or the sole administrator.

The reports said that after ruling on the issues of locus standi and jurisdiction in favour of the defendants, the judge did not award any costs against the claimant.

Speaking to newsmen outside the courtroom, counsel to the claimant, Godsent Elewa, disclosed some of the grounds on which he would encourage his client to appeal the ruling of the High Court.

“I think the judge in his wisdom has given judgement. I think I will consult with my client to know the next line of action to take.

“I think there’s a window to challenge the ruling. You understand me. Because, in as much as I respect the judge so much, I think there are certain aspects of this judgement I don’t agree with the judge.

“The judgement today, basically the judgement resolved two issues today which were in jurisdiction.

“Firstly, the judge said my client lacked the locus standi, that the only person who can institute or challenge the appointment of chairman and members of RSIEC, that, that power lies, the locus standi lies only with the Executive Governor of Rivers State.

“That was the first issue of locus standi my Lord decided. Then on substantives jurisdiction, My Lord also held that he lacks the substantive jurisdiction by virtue of Section 1 (1) of the Emergency Powers Act of 1961, that every matter pertaining to emergency can only be determined by the Supreme Court by virtue of that act.”

On the comment made by the court on the validity of the August 39 local government election, Elewa said, “The court then made some statement “Let it be known that those were just statements made by the way. They were not part of the judgement of this court today.”

On his part, counsel to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which was the fifth defendant in the suit, Monday John Otokwala, said the judgment of the court “represents the position of the law with respect to the conduct of the local government elections in Rivers State.”

FCT doctors begin indefinite strike

The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory Administration yesterday began an indefinite strike.

This was disclosed in a communique issued by the ARD-FCT, signed by its President, Dr. George Ebong, and General Secretary, Dr. Agbor Affiong.

The decision followed the Association’s seven-day warning strike, which ended after an emergency general meeting held on Sunday.

The ARD-FCTA is an association of doctors practising in the 14 District and General Hospitals, including the Department of Public Health under the FCTA.

The doctors had embarked on the warning strike last Monday, to press home their demands, after months of unresolved negotiations with the FCTA.

In the communique, the association said that after reassessing the issues earlier presented to management, Congress expressed deep disappointment that none of the demands had been met.

“This once again confirms our fears of the chronic neglect of our healthcare system affecting the effectiveness of the medical doctors in order to carry out care in the highest standard,” the doctors stated in the communique.

The doctors are demanding the payment of salary arrears, ranging from one to six months, owed to members employed since 2023. They also want the immediate recruitment of new staff, settlement of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, and payment of arrears arising from the 25–35 per cent upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure.

In addition, they are asking for clear timelines for completing skipping and conversion processes for all members, along with the settlement of all accumulated arrears. They further called on the FCTA to address continuous erroneous deductions from members’ salaries and to rectify the irregular and erratic salary payment pattern.

They also demanded the conversion of post-Part II Fellows to the Consultant cadre within six months of passing, as well as documented timelines for promotion exercises with full arrears paid. Other demands include payment of wage award arrears, renovation and equipping of FCTA hospitals to world-class standards, payment of outstanding hazard allowance arrears, and settlement of salary arrears owed to newly employed external residents who are currently owed three to four months’ pay.

The communique noted that following exhaustive deliberations at the close of the seven-day warning strike, Congress resolved to embark on an indefinite strike.

“After the most passionate and historic deliberations in ARD-FCT, Congress unanimously resolved that Congress shall embark on an indefinite strike action commencing 8:00 a.m., Monday, 15th September 2025, until the government and management demonstrate genuine commitment to making health in the FCT a priority.

“We do hope that the management will do the urgent needful to meet all of our demands for the sake of our patients and ourselves,” the communiqué added.

Obi visits Olubadan-designate, harps on Nigeria’s unity

The 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Sunday, urged Nigerians, irrespective of tribe, religious or political affiliation to love each other and build united country.

Obi, who gave this advice during his visit to the Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at his Bodija private residence in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, said loving each other became imperative as this would help to build a better Nigeria.

He said, “First, I’m here to pay my sincere respect to royalty, to the Olubadan-designate before the installation. I’m here to pay respect for the man I have deep respect for.

“My visit is to congratulate him as the next 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. My visit is about Nigeria, about selfless leadership, leadership that is committed to turning our society around.

“Can we unite and love each other to build a better country? We have no other country except this one. We must all build it together for the benefit of everybody,” he advised.

The former governor of Anambra State explained that Ibadan is very strategic and central to the political, social and economic development of Nigeria.

Obi expressed optimism that Ladoja would bring his wealth of experiences as a former senator, governor and business tycoon to lead Ibadan to a enviable positions.

He said, “Ladoja will bring his wealth of experience to bear as Olubadan. Ibadan is very strategic and central to the development of Nigeria. And as a former senator, governor, business tycoon, he will have all what he needs to succeed. And I will support him as Olubadan for the sake of one Nigeria.

“Most of the schools in Ibadan, University of Ibadan, for example, were attended by many people from different parts of Nigeria and they are making it in all areas of human endeavors,” he stressed.

Responding, Oba Ladoja said, “I just see my appointment as Olubadan as another opportunity for service. Many people erroneously believe that the throne is for glamour.

“The time of glamour is gone; in contemporary times, it is about service, what you have on the table for the people in society,” he stated.

Obi was accompanied by the 2023 governorship candidate of LP in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, as well as Yunusa Tanko among others.

In a related development, a member of House of Representatives representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/ Iwajowa/ Kajola Federal Constituency, Sina Oyedeji and his counterpart from Ibarapa North/Ibarapa Central Federal Constituency, Adebayo Adepoju under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, also visited the Olubadan-designate, Oba Ladoja at his private residence, on Sunday.

They explained that the visit became necessary because the former governor who is now the Olubadan is a father to all of them.

The duo, while speaking with newsmen after the visit, said the Olubadan-designate urged them to do well for their people.

They said, “We came here to pay homage to our Baba, the new Olubadan of Ibadanland. He is a big man in Nigeria.

“Like I told him, he is not Olubadan of Ibadanland, he is Olubadan of Nigeria. It is our duty to come and pay homage to him. We can’t wait till after coronation. He (Ladoja) advised us to do well, he told us to make sure that we deliver and do well for our people.

“He told us to make sure we did not disappoint our people and make sure we deliver. Those are the things that we discussed.”

Guinness World Record confirms Hilda Baci’s largest-serving of Jollof Rice

Chef Hilda Baci has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice, weighing 8,780 kilogrammes (19,356 lb 9 oz).

The record was achieved in partnership with Gino in Victoria Island, Lagos, and has been officially confirmed.

Announcing the feat yesterday on X (Formely Twitter), the post read,”New record: Largest serving of Nigerian style jollof rice – 8,780 kg (19,356 lb 9 oz) achieved by Hilda Baci and Gino in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria”

Baci, who rose to fame with her headline-making cook-a-thon, has once again brought global attention to Nigerian cuisine.

Guinness World Records had sent words of encouragement to the Nigerian celebrity when she was attempting the cooking on Friday.

The record body in a video, said, ”What’s cookin’?

“Best of luck to @hildabacicooks who’s attempting a new record for the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice today.”

The recent attempt drew a large crowd of supporters, celebrities, and food lovers who gathered at the venue to witness the spectacle.

According to the chef before the event, the specially designed pot used for the challenge has a capacity of 22,619 litres, and her goal is to fill it up to 80 per cent.

She explained that this would require about 5,278 kilogrammes of raw basmati rice, equivalent to 264 bags, though she said she rounded it up to 250 bags as part of her strategy.

She later revealed to newsmen on Friday that she used 200 bags of rice, because the measuring crane and scale designed to weigh the final dish had a limit of 20,000 kilogrammes, including the weight of the custom-made pot.

“If you notice when we started we weighed the pot and we need to weigh every single thing that goes into the pot when we’re done.

“The goal was that by the time I was done making 5,000 kilogrammes I was hoping to achieve about 17,000 to 18,000 kilogrammes.

“Right now, if I include the weight of the pot, that’s about 20,000,” Hilda said.

According to her, the 200 bags cooked still amounted to 4,000 kilogrammes of rice, enough to feed 20,000 people.

The event turned into a carnival-like atmosphere, with music, dancing, and appearances from well-known personalities, including Nollywood actress Funke Akindele, who mounted the stage to hail Baci’s resilience before joining her at the cooking spot to stir the tomato base for the rice.

The First Lady of Ogun State, Bamidele Abiodun, was also present to lend her support.

Other celebrities spotted at the venue include dancer Kaffy, Tomike Adeoye, Enioluwa, Peller, Veekee James, Femi Atere, Tacha, Papaya, Samuel Banks, Alex Unusual, Folagbade Banks, and Spyro, among others.

Court declines hearing of Nnamdi Kanu’s motion seeking transfer from DSS to National Hospital

Justice Musa Liman of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has declined hearing of a motion filed by Biafra nation agitator, Nnamdi Kanu, seeking an order transferring him from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to the National Hospital in Abuja for urgent medical attention.

The judge declined hearing on the ground that his fiat to sit as a vacation judge ends today and therefore he lacked jurisdiction to open such a new matter for hearing.

Justice Liman instead ordered that the case file be returned to the registry for the Chief Judge to reassign it to another judge.

At Monday’s proceedings, Asiwaju Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, appeared for the Federal Government while Uchenna Njoku, SAN, stood for the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

When the matter was called, Kanu’s lawyer informed the judge that the motion by Kanu was filed on September 1, while a counter-affidavit of 37 paragraphs opposing the transfer request was served on him by government in the open court.

The senior lawyer said that he had not read the counter-affidavit for him to respond.

He therefore applied for an adjournment to enable him to respond to the counter-affidavit and in view of the fact that the vacation of the judge had come to an end.

On his part, Awomolo, SAN, did not oppose the adjournment request and said that he would be ready to be in court anytime a new date is fixed.

In a brief ruling, Justice Liman ordered that the case file be returned to the registry for the Chief Judge to reassign the matter to another judge.

Justice Liman said that he would make a recommendation to the Chief Judge for the speedy hearing of the motion since the health of the applicant is involved.

Kanu, in the motion with charge number FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, had sought an order of the court for the Department of State Services (DSS) to move him from DSS custody to the National Hospital for urgent medical care.

Giving an 11-ground argument why their request should be granted, lead counsel to the applicant, Kanu Agabi, SAN, said his client is presently standing trial before Justice James Omotosho in charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015.

He said Kanu, on May 19, filed an application praying the court to admit him to bail pending the hearing and determination of the terrorism charge.

The lawyer, however, said that the said application could not be taken before the annual vacation of the court, hence his continued detention.

According to him, while awaiting the resumption of the court activities, the applicant’s health took a worrisome decline, necessitating the invitation of doctors for the purpose of carrying out a thorough and extensive examination on the applicant.

“The examination revealed issues to his health including organs such as his pancreas and liver as well as an emerging lump underneath his armpit and dangerously low levels of potassium.

“The doctors have recommended that he be moved to the National Hospital as an interim measure to afford him medical attention and forestall further decline.

“The applicant’s health is seriously deteriorating considering the nature of his confinement, thereby making more pressing the need to bring this application and have same heard by a vacation judge,” Agabi said.

He alleged that a letter by the doctors to the Director-General of the DSS, advising the transfer of Kanu, had gone without answer.

He said the urgency of the matter had, therefore, necessitated the filing of the application as a measure to arrest further decline of his health while spirited efforts are being expended to ensure his treatment.

The senior lawyer said that the grant of the application would not occasion any injustice on the complainant (DSS).

Besides, Agabi said the court “is imbued with jurisdiction to hear and grant the prayers sought in the application.”

Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother to Nnamdi Kanu, in the affidavit he deposed to, averred that the IPOB leader recently complained of weakness and pains in his body.

He said this “prompted the invitation of doctors led by the Eminent Emeritus Professor Austin A.C. Agaji, who on 1st September, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m., told him that several tests were conducted on Kanu in August.

Emmanuel said the doctor told him, at Agabi’s law firm, that it was discovered that the IPOB leader was suffering from issues relating to his liver and kidney as well as dangerously low levels of potassium.

“He was further diagnosed with a swelling around his armpit area which requires urgent attention to ascertain the cause and thereafter to seek appropriate medical treatment,” he averred.

Emergency rule: Ibas defends six-month tenure as opposition demands probe

As Rivers State prepares for the return of Governor Siminalayi Fubara on September 18 following the six-month emergency rule in the state, the sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas (retd), has defended his tenure, stating that he fulfilled President Bola Tinubu’s mandate and stabilised the oil-rich state.

However, the opposition parties called for an investigation into Iba’s tenure, particularly his management of the state’s resources during his six-month stay in Brick House.

The Peoples Democratic Party described Ibas’s six-month administration as a waste of time, declaring it unconstitutional, a violation of democratic norms, and demanding an investigation.

Meanwhile, the New Nigeria Peoples Party dismissed the entire six-month rule under Ibas as an exercise in futility, claiming it lacked legitimacy from the outset.

The Labour Party also criticised the emergency rule, alleging it was designed to protect the interests of President Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, rather than those of the people.

In contrast to the opposition’s stance, the All Progressives Congress praised Ibas for maintaining peace and upholding the rights of citizens during his time as sole administrator.

The party lauded his efforts in ensuring that democratic processes, especially the conduct of local government elections, remained intact, describing his leadership as a stabilising force in a previously tense political environment.

Rivers State had been engulfed in political turmoil for nearly two years, largely due to a power tussle between former Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara, which resulted in a prolonged governance deadlock.

In response to the crisis, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency on March 18 and appointed Ibas as the sole administrator to manage the state’s affairs during the period.

Two days later, on March 20, both the House of Representatives and the Senate endorsed the President’s declaration, effectively suspending Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly away on forced holidays despite widespread public criticism.

Objecting to what they considered an unconstitutional move, 11 PDP governors filed a case at the Supreme Court, registered as SC/CV/329/2025. However, there has been no public update on the matter since then.

Following the reconciliation between Wike and Fubara, the political climate in Rivers has eased.

The state held its local government elections on August 30, with the ruling All Progressives Congress securing 20 seats and the PDP winning the remaining three.

With a few days to the end of his tenure, the sole administrator commenced the transition process ahead of the President’s reinstatement of the suspended governor by September 18.

Thanksgiving service

Speaking at the Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service in Port Harcourt on Sunday ahead of Fubara’s return to power, the sole administrator urged political stakeholders to lay down their differences, emphasising that the progress and prosperity of Rivers State must take precedence over personal or party interests.

However, notable politicians in Rivers, including Wike and Fubara, were absent at the event. Aside from the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Ruler, many monarchs in the state were visibly absent at the thanksgiving.

However, Permanent Secretaries, local government chairmen, heads of boards, agencies, parastatals and service commanders in the state graced the occasion.

Ibas, who had last week said he has ‘successfully achieved’ the mandate given to him by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State.

Ibas noted that his administration has laid the foundation for reconciliation and called on the people to nurture that effort so it can firmly take root.

He also appealed to all stakeholders, including leaders, elders, politicians, and citizens, to always prioritise the state’s well-being above all else.

Ibas stated, “Six months ago, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, declared a state of emergency in River State. At that moment, our beloved state stood at a crossroad, torn by divisions, instability, and broken trust.  By God’s grace and with the support of Mr. President and all of you, we have worked through those difficult days together.

“Today, as a people, we return thanks to God for preserving our lives, granting us peace, and allowing the successful conduct of the local government council elections across the state and thus laying the foundation for the return of democratic governance in Rivers State.”

Quoting some Bible passages, he said thanksgiving was a solemn testimony of God’s faithfulness to the state, saying, “We have survived storms-political, social, economic, and through it all, God has been faithful.”

Ibas added, “The seeds of reconciliation have been planted. These seeds need your deliberate nurture to take root. Our collective sacrifices and commitment to peace is what we must all strive to guide at this time.

“My brothers and sisters, this Ecumenical Centre (venue of the event) is itself a symbol of unity, different denominations under one roof, lifting one voice to one God. In the same spirit, Rivers people must rise above bitterness, rivalry and self-interest to pursue the greater good of our state.

“The progress and prosperity of the River State must be placed above personal and or partisan interest. I make a special appeal to our political actors, sheathe your sword. Politics must never be an excuse to destroy the very state we are called to serve.

“The progress and prosperity of the River State must be placed above personal or partisan interest. River State cannot afford another season of division and acrimony. We must forgive one another, reconcile with sincerity, and embrace tolerance. Let us remember that no political victory or personal gain is worth the blood of our brothers and sisters.’

He called on all stakeholders to focus their efforts on fostering and maintaining peace in the state.

Ibas added, “Let us forgive, let us reconcile, and let us heal. For where there is peace, there is progress, and where there is love, there is prosperity. To our youth, you are the strength of Rivers State. Do not allow yourselves to be used as tools for violence. Channel your energy into building, creating, and sustaining peace. Your future, our collective future, depends on it.

“While efforts at peace and reconciliation take hold, all stakeholders, leaders, elders, political actors, and citizens alike should put Rivers State first. Let us guide the peace we have, nurture it with love, and grow it with stability and prosperity for generations yet unborn.”

“Our elders must continue to guide with wisdom. Our faith leaders must sustain prayers for peace. Our young people must commit to learning, working, and creating so that Rivers State will continue to shine as the treasure base of the nation.”

In his sermon, Pastor Organ Barasin highlighted that every individual experiences a moment of intervention, noting that the emergency rule was implemented in the state due to prevailing challenges and instability.

“We must admit that we didn’t do well,” he said, pointing out that before the declaration of emergency rule, the intense political tension in the state could have led to a bloodbath if not for divine intervention.

He stated, “Some people may have been killed. The plan of the enemy was to destabilise Rivers State, but Rivers State belongs to God. The plan of the enemy will not stand.

“We are thanking God for his continued sustenance. There is peace in this land. Rivers State will grow industries.

“The peace we have now must be sustained, and God wants us to forget the past. If you don’t let go of the past, you can’t reach out for the future. Brethren, we must learn to forgive and forget the past so that we can move forward.”

The cleric, who lamented the losses the state has endured due to the emergency rule, called for a change in attitude upon Fubara’s return.

He stated, “As we prepare to hand over to a democratic government, if our attitudes don’t change, nothing will change in this state. Our leaders, service chiefs, judiciary and the legislature all have a role to play. Billions have gone.”

Opposition, APC clash

Reacting, the Deputy National Youth Leader of the PDP, Timothy Osadolor, condemned Ibas’s tenure as unlawful.

In an interview with, Osadolor called for a comprehensive investigation into the governance in Rivers State under the sole administrator.

He stated, “Well, like I mentioned at the very beginning, he had no business being there as the sole administrator of Rivers State. Rivers State had an elected governor, so that six months of illegality should be corrected and documented, so that when he is there, he can be thoroughly investigated.

“More so, the numerous resources he expended and presided over belong to the Rivers State people, who did not elect him, who did not decide over their affairs or their resources. Therefore, his handover notes should be well-titled in everything they did because the six months must be probed.

“No matter what, we also believe that Mr. President has no right to truncate or suspend the tenure of an elected public officer that was elected the same way he was elected. For checks and balances, those powers should be vested in the Nigerian National Assembly and not in the office of the President.

“More importantly, no elected officer should be made to stay out of the mandate for more than 90 days, if that makes any sense.”

He added that, “His (Ibas) appointment was built on illegality. So he did not achieve anything.”

Also, the National Publicity Secretary of the NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, said Ibas’s tenure lacked legitimacy ab initio.

“The tenure of Rivers’ military administrator is almost like an exercise in futility. This is because his take-off was an aberration of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We still maintain that it was an illegality. For one reason or another, they seem to have found some sort of political solution to the problem that was not even half as dangerous as what we had in some parts of Northern Nigeria, which needed a state of emergency to improve the insecurity they are facing.

“When we say a state of emergency, we are not talking about removing an elected government for one appointee. There is nowhere in the Constitution that allows it. We still maintain that. So, the earlier the illegal tenure comes to an end, the sooner we return to constitutional order and to the expression of the will of the people in Rivers State.

“How do you justify the administration of a military administrator? You look at things from a democratic value. It is just an exercise in futility,” Johnson told The PUNCH.

Speaking in a similar tone, the Interim National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Tony Akeni, alleged that Ibas merely served as a placeholder for Tinubu and his political ally, Wike.

“There are two designs by President Tinubu and his favourite South-South sidekick, Wike, in the coup and siege against democracy in River state. The political and the economic designs,” Akeni claimed.

He alleged that the “political design” was to emasculate Fubara and secure Rivers for the ruling APC ahead of 2027, while the “economic design” was to divert state revenues through local councils loyal to Wike.

“To assess Sole Administrator Admiral Ibok-Eke Ibas’s performance during the period, his only achievement is that he did a good job standing in for his adopted new masters, Tinubu and Wike,” Akeni stated.

“In both plots, Tinubu and Wike fully succeeded. The only plot left they don’t know about is that they do not own tomorrow. Yes, they don’t. In 2027, Tinubu and Wike may wake up to find that it is God and Rivers State’s 7.2 million reborn citizens who actually own and will determine their destiny in 2027.

“Not the two clay emperors riding roughshod over their governor, Simi Fubara, and their treasury today.”

However, the APC Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, praised the sole administrator for restoring peace and safeguarding the citizens’ electoral rights.

In an interview with The PUNCH, Ibrahim stated that only the President, who defined the administrator’s terms of reference, is in a position to properly assess Ibas’ performance.

He stated, “Well, you see, as a party, we are not privy to the terms of reference given to the administrator in Rivers. But whether he has achieved or acted according to the provisions or the expectation of the terms of reference is another thing.

“What matters to us as a party is the peaceful coexistence of the people and the freedom given to the people of Rivers State to exercise the franchise of election, as done during the local government election.

“That has been done peacefully, democratically, and in an era that shows that, yes, the people are happy with the dividend of democracy given to them under the national leadership of the APC.

“So, to that extent, we are happy with the conduct of the affairs of the administrator. But whether he has acted according to what he was sent to do is an assessment that can basically be given by the presidency, which gave him that task.”

The APC called on Fubara to embrace democratic principles once his suspension is lifted.

He added, “Well, if his suspension is lifted and he’s asked to resume, I think he must have learned. He would have licked his wounds so well as to leave no room for infection.

“He should not allow anything to happen in a way and manner that would put him off the seat of power. As provided by the mandate given to him by the people, he should be a democrat. He should play democracy by the book and do as expected of him as a politician who was elected to serve the people.”

Groups demand probe

Additionally, the President of the Ijaw Youth Council, Jonathan Lokpobiri, alleged that the six-month emergency rule was marked by widespread corruption.

He added, “If you seek my honest opinion, Rivers State has lost not just the issue of governance, but investors’ confidence in terms of people’s perception about the stability in terms of polity.

“Also, I do believe that Rivers’ resources were plundered, which the man has no business having access to. It became private resources where he didn’t limit his tenure to doing the basics about governance in terms of maintaining the peace and all of that. He has gone into the dimension of an executive governor of Rivers State, where if the President did not make it clear to him, he would have wished to even continue.’’

Also commenting, the Publicity Secretary, Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People,  Oscar Imeabe, argued that the emergency rule impacted negatively on the state.

“The emergency rule has reportedly crippled economic activities in the state by chasing away investors and entrepreneurs. It has been a major setback to the history of Rivers State. The Administrator dissolved state institutions like the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, the Rivers State Micro-Finance Agency, boards of many tertiary institutions and agencies that were appointed by a democratically elected governor and proceeded to make illegal appointments which he wants to leave behind,” he stated.

Imeabe, who is also the Coordinator, South-South Youths Initiative,  called for an investigation into Ibas’ tenure.

“MOSOP is hereby calling for an investigation into the financial management of the state by the administrator. And my organisation, South-South Youths Initiative, the coalition of youths bodies, call on the EFCC and ICPC to probe the allegations of financial misappropriation by the state administrator.”

A former Senator, Lee Maeba, who represented Rivers South-East District in the National Assembly, described the situation during Ibas’s tenure as dire.

In an interview with our correspondent, he stated, “Rivers State has lost so much money, and we have to account for it. President Bola Tinubu has to account for our money. We have lost a huge amount of money. Six months of allocation, Internally Generated Revenue, and all other statutory earnings, I mean.

“How can you just suspend a governor and begin to play with all the monies meant for the state? The Administrator is behaving however he likes. An Administrator who was asked to go and restore security, but he went there and became completely in charge of politics.

“So, it’s a terrible thing to do. I don’t believe the President can go this low. It is the lowest level a President can go. He does not have any respect for anybody in Rivers because we elected him President. It’s a terrible thing to talk about.”

Maeba, who called for an investigation into the six months, stated that those who supported the state of emergency would face the consequences.

He stated, “The Constitution does not envisage that you will suspend a governor. There is nowhere in the Constitution that you will suspend a governor. And the terrible National Assembly stood by the President to do all the terrible things he did in Rivers. So, may that which happened in Rivers not happen in another state in Nigeria. I don’t pray it happens to any other state at all.’’

“And what has happened to Rivers is not gone. We will stand up to demand all the money that came to the state and the power of the Administrator to just jump into a state and start spending state money in the name of an emergency that does not exist. The State of Emergency that we hear is to restore security breaches or the breakdown of law and order. Now, in this case, the man just came for politics because there was no case of insecurity. He came and started using state resources without any constitutional powers or law allowing him to do that.”

We’re going to do more to better the lives  of our people – Hon. Esile

Hon James Ubah Esile is the Honourable member for Onuimo State Constituency in the 10th Imo State House of Assembly. He is also the promoter of the Fresh Air Movement, a non-Governmental Organisation, saddled with bringing succour to the less privileged in the society. He spoke with Political Correspondent, Ben Duru, on the on-going voter registration, the outlook of the house on resumption and the pedigree of the governor of Imo state.

Now that the Imo State House of Assembly has resumed plenary after its recess, what should the people of Imo be expecting?

Well, after a well-deserved rest, first and foremost let me thank the Almighty God that saw the house through and has brought us back to work for the good of the people of Imo State. You will agree with me that the Imo State lawmakers have discharged their duties creditably before going on recess. It is good that we are resuming from where we stopped. By His grace, we are going to do more to better the lives of our people. The hallmark of leadership and representation is to lift the lives of the people better than the way you met them. We are not mouthy leaders; our good works speak for us. The people of Onuimo can testify. Leadership is about service, not competition. We have made a covenant with the people to only work for the good of the state and that is where we stand and will never deviate. Let me also assure the good people of Onuimo State Constituency that things will only continue to get better and better. They have not seen anything yet. All they have to do is to believe and keep the peace and leave the rest.

Can we have your views on the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration?

The ongoing registration is a constitutional provision and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC is carrying out one of its functions. Let me say that one of the best ways of make positive changes in any electoral process is by participating in elections irrespective of which political party you belong. Therefore the process leading to the 2027 general election has commenced with the ongoing voter registration. Let me use this medium to appeal to everyone in Imo State in general and my constituents in particular most especially those who turned 18 years. I urge them to go and register in their various Local Government Areas. This is the only way we can secure our future. This is the process that will enable the electorates to elect the persons of their choice and ensure that democracy dividends get to them after the election.

But INEC’s initial data reveals that the Southeast are lagging in the registration process?

Just as you and I know, these are only preliminary records. I have confidence in our people because they are politically conscious. They will register enmasse before the programme comes to an end. It is impossible for us to fail in mobilizing our people for the elections. So I don’t think there is any need to worry because our people understand the politics involved in the next election and will play it accordingly. Don’t forget that we have a governor Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma who is politically savvy. So Imo and the people of the South East will rise to the occasion, we will not be caught napping in 2027. I want to appeal to Ndigbo in other parts of Nigeria to ensure that they also register to vote in their areas of residence. They should not allow themselves to be cowed. They have always shown resilience and they should continue in that path.

The Fresh Air Movement, which is your baby, has gradually become a household name in Imo State. How did you do it?

Yes, the Fresh Air is my brain child but it is a movement of the people, by the people and for the people. I’m only a figurehead. The strength and funding come from the peoples’ goodwill and support. Fresh Air Movement is a social and political movement that is principally designed to reach out to the vulnerable through education, health, sports, and empowerment. Today, it has coordinators in all 27 LGAs, ward executives, and a strong grassroots presence. There is no doubt that the movement has expanded dramatically. This expansion stem out of the love the people have for its principles and ideologies which is centered on the people. I am very proud that it has become a source of refuge and comfort for many that have been touched so far and it will continue to expand because more people are keying into it.

Your are the House Committee Chairman on Culture, Tourism, and Creative Arts, can you tell us what your committee has seen so far and how the 10th House has impacted on the people?

Let me start the answer this way. No government solves all problems in a single term. Government is a continuum. But without the fear of contradiction, the 10th Imo State House of Assembly has shown its uniqueness in the way it has approached its duties.. We have maintained mutual respect among ourselves, enjoyed cordial relations with the executive, and passed rich bills and motions across key sectors—health, education, roads, agriculture, sports, power, and technology. As for my committee, I can tell you authoritatively that a lot is happening in that sector. The executive has achieved a lot for instance my committee visited the Imo Concord Hotel and what we saw there is massive. The renovation that has taken place in that iconic hotel is unprecedented. By the time that hotel is completed, I can assure you that you will be proud to identify with it and the same thing is happening in every sector.

How would you describe Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration?

His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma is an excellent and pragmatic governor. You can only compare him to the late Dr. Sam Mbakwe in the development history of Imo State. The Assumpta Cathedral Flyover, which past administrations failed to deliver, is now a reality. His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has lived up to his 3R mantra of Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Reconciliation. Hate him or like him, Imo people can see his achievements because they stand eloquently in his honour. You cannot wish them away and these are signature projects that will stand the test of time.

What about the Imo Charter of Equity and the 2027 succession?

The governor is a man of divine wisdom. Imo people trust him to lead them and not to let them down. The confidence level of Imo people on their governor is increasing by the day because what he has promised to do is what he is doing. 2027 is still far; this is not the time for succession politics. Every leader should focus on governance and must work in tandem with the desires of the people. Once the people have confidence in their leader, things are made easier because the leader will not deceive them. Governor Hope Uzodimma will do everything to protect the interest of Imo State come 2027.

Should the emergence of coalition frighten anybody?

All I can say is that Nigerians know that the APC government with President Bola Ahmed Tinumbu and Governor Hope Uzodimma in Imo State is performing. Nigerians will vote for APC to continue the good work. In fact, APC will have more states in 2027 than it had in the last general election. Nobody is going to fool Nigerians again or take the people for a ride. Is it not the same people running from one political party to the other? Nigerians are wiser now and are beginning to verify every action and statement by politicians

What your advice to the people of Onuimo and Imo State?

First, I appreciate my constituents, the good people of Onuimo for their continued support to me and the government of Imo State led by Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma. I want to urge them and the people of Imo State not to let their support the 10th Assembly and our God-sent governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, in his transformational governance to wane. They should deepen grassroots mobilization for voter registration. Together, we will build a stronger Imo State.”

One of your trending empowerment programme is the ongoing Heavy Duty Driving training for your constituents. How did you come up with it?

I want to make it categorically clear that I am only here to serve the people. Whatever I can do that will benefit the people is what I will continue to do. To God be the glory who gave us the strength and wisdom to serve and to think outside the box. I am deeply grateful for the support of my people and the commitment of the beneficiaries. This is a skill that is not only trending in our state economy but also highly marketable even outside Nigeria. My joy is to see Onuimo people benefit directly from democracy.

Igbo group calls for restructuring

…Appeals for Nnamdi Kanu’s unconditional release

The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has declared its firm support for urgent restructuring of Nigeria, stressing that it must be anchored on organic, coherent and functional regions, rather than what it described as the “disjointed, awkward and vindictive” six geopolitical zones.

In a statement jointly signed by its Director-General, Justice Alpha Ikpeama, and its National Director of Publicity, Prof. Obasi Igwe, UNIEC said Nigerians have suffered too long under false promises and prolonged debates without concrete solutions.

According to the group, true restructuring should guarantee a just and humane Nigerian society, tackle the fundamental questions of ethnic nationalities, power sharing, and equitable distribution of resources, rather than cosmetic amendments or power devolution.

The statement reads in part: “The restructuring we are advocating for will usher Nigeria into organic, coherent and functional regions, not the awkward six geopolitical zones designed only to keep Nigeria chaotic and stagnant.

Restructuring must grant the right of relative self-determination to each constituent group, with each region paying agreed taxes to sustain the central government. Returning powers to organic regions will reduce cries of marginalization, minimize separatist tendencies, and enhance security and mutual harmony.”

The council also called for the lifting of what it termed an “unfair economic and ports blockade imposed against the Igbo/East since 1967.” It urged the immediate dredging and modernization of ports in Port Harcourt, Bonny, Azumini, Opobo, and other Eastern coastal areas to boost trade and development.

While acknowledging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to improve security in the East and across Nigeria, UNIEC urged him to replicate such gains in other critical sectors.

On the issue of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the Igbo elders reaffirmed their continued appeal for his immediate and unconditional release.

“We shall not relent in urging President Tinubu to release and rehabilitate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his colleagues, and to end political arrests, imprisonments, and persecutions in Nigeria,” the group stated.

Uzodimma presents Book on APC’s 10-year leadership, September 30th

Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, will, on September 30th this year, present his latest book on the APC’s leadership of Nigeria over the past 10 years.

The book, A Decade of Impactful Progressive Governance in Nigeria, was authored by the governor to provide insight into the achievements and challenges of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) since it came to power in 2015.

As an insider, Uzodimma leveraged his position as PGF Chairman to chronicle the events before and after the ascension of the party to power, and how it has impacted Nigeria.

In a statement in Owerri, Imo State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, disclosed that the book presentation will take place in Owerri, the state capital.

He said the 10-chapter book, whose foreword was written by the immediate past Chairman of the APC and former Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is a veritable compendium for both APC and non-APC members alike.

Emelumba quoted Governor Uzodimma as saying that the book is unique “because of its objective nature, as it highlights the obvious challenges faced by the APC in its 10-year governance from May 2015 to May 2025.”

The Commissioner said Governor Uzodimma is convinced that the book presents “a critical analysis of the manifesto of the APC and how far the party has gone in actualizing it, including areas of shortcomings. It is definitely not a PR book for the APC but a sincere examination of the party’s performance in governance.”

The broad areas covered by Uzodimma in the book include early progressive movements and parties in Nigeria, comparative analysis between pre- and post-APC eras, and the sectoral achievements recorded by the APC government in the last 10 years, Emelumba said.

According to him, Uzodimma also discussed the way forward for progressive governance in Nigeria and the vision of the APC for the country’s future, especially in the economic frontiers.

Top dignitaries across party divides are expected to grace the historic occasion.
