Tinubu to commission Uzodimma’s legacy projects August

…Governor assures of prompt delivery during inspection

The Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma has assured that some of his numerous ongoing projects in the State will be completed and commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in August.

Senator Uzodimma gave the promise yesterday, June 23, 2025 when he defied the heavy downpour to visit the project sites to ascertain the level of progress on them.

Some of the projects visited include the Imo International Conference Centre, now named after Late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the Renovated Government House Chapel, the former Assumpta Round About understanding transformation with a multi-pronged flyover, the Concorde Hotel Owerri (now Concorde Hilton Hotel) and the Imo State Land Information Service Centre.

Speaking to newsmen after inspection, the Governor affirmed that the projects have attained 90 per cent completion and will be ready for commissioning by the President in August this year when he visits.

His words: “The job is about 90 per cent complete, meaning that by the end of next month or early August, it will coincide with the visit of Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu who will be here by August to commission all the numerous projects we have achieved under his Renewed Hope Agenda.”

“We have enough convenient construction weather to complete the job as planned,” the Governor added, dispelling insinuation that the rainy season may affect the deadline for the completion of the projects.

The Governor further disclosed that the construction and establishment of Imo Land Information Service Centre was a deliberate effort by his administration to give a permanent solution to many years of land grabbing and illicit land transactions in the State.

He noted that there was legislation by the Imo State House of Assembly to that effect which he gave assent to in 2021, making it compulsory for all land owners in Imo State to recertify and document their lands with the Geographic Information System (GIS)  provided by the Centre.

This, he said, can be done online as all land allocation records have been converted to a digital format in other to harmonise the administration of land in the State.

“98 per cent of the land transactions will be done online for convenience. By so doing, we will have a society that will be governed by sanity and harmonious way of doing things, given the 21st century challenges,” he stated.

Governor Uzodimma was accompanied on the projects inspection by the Chief of Staff, Barr Nnamdi Anyaehie, and other members of the State expanded executive Council.

Tension brews in Enugu community over mining royalties

Tension is brewing in the Iwollo Omashi Kingdom in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State over alleged corruption, sabotage, and abysmal leadership failure by Community leaders.

The youths of Iwollo Omashi Kingdom, comprising four autonomous communities in Ezeagu LGA, namely Iwollo Omashi, Aguobu Iwollo, Owolloti Iwollo, and Amagu Iwollo, under the auspices of the Iwollo Youths General Assembly, are accusing their Traditional Rulers and President Generals of corruption, sabotage and abysmal leadership failure.

Trouble started when a mining company, Rating Industry Global Ltd, discovered mineral resources in Iwollo and entered into an agreement with the host communities in 2022 for infrastructural and community development. This infrastructure includes the provision of a water borehole with 2000 gallons storage capacity, the establishment of a skills acquisition center, road development (grading and lateriting), construction of a basic health center facility, and the award of scholarships to at least five of her indigent/ brilliant students amongst other things.

However, the youths accused the company of reneging on its promises despite several letters from the communities, disclosing that one of such letters was written on February 24, 2025.

The youths alleged that the traditional rulers and president general received N3 million in bribes from the company in the first quarter of 2025 alone. They also claimed that Rayting Industry Global Ltd had sublet the mining site to another company, AFRIMETALS Trading Ltd.

In a letter to Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah dated May 16, 2025, and signed by over a hundred persons where they had urged the governor to intervene, the Youths Assembly passed a vote of no confidence on two traditional rulers and their President generals namely, HRH Igwe Raph Okolo and HRH Igwe Augustine Odezulu, PG Emma Ilochi, PG Paschal Ijegalu.

The youths, however, called for a fresh leadership selected through a competitive process to replace the current traditional rulers and President Generals, believing that continuing to pay them salaries and allowances would waste taxpayers’ money.

The alleged corruption and sabotage by traditional rulers and the president general sparked tension and mistrust among the youths, which prompted a protest on April 28 where older women aged 50 and above from Iwollo took to the streets of the villages to show solidarity with the youths.

Reacting, the traditional ruler of the Iwollo Omasi community, Igwe Raph Okolo, denied the allegations of corruption made by a group, Iwollo Youths General Assembly.

NDLEA finds cocaine hidden in hangers, dresses

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted a consignment of cocaine concealed in clothes hangers and sewn into dresses packed in a travellers’ luggage.

This was made known in a statement released by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

The illicit substance was discovered during a routine search by NDLEA officers at an undisclosed airport, as traffickers continue to devise new methods to beat security checks.

He wrote, “How could anyone have imagined that cocaine is buried inside the hangers holding the clothes they’re travelling with or sewn into the dress in their luggage? But that’s the reality of the desperation by the cartels as discovered by #ndlea_nigeria officers in their latest seizure.”

Atiku, Obasanjo, Gowon,Shettima, El-Rufai meet

Atiku Abubakar has met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Vice President Kashim Shettima and ex-military Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.

He also met with former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, National leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other imminent Nigerians.

They met during the 70th birthday of former Bauchi State governor and ex-National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Adamu Muazu, on Saturday.

Atiku recalled working with Muazu between 1999 to 2007 to lay the foundation for good governance.

Posting on X, Atiku wrote: “Yesterday, I joined my boss, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Head of State Yakubu Gowon, and Vice President Kashim Shettima, along with many other prominent Nigerian leaders, in paying tribute to Alhaji Ahmadu Adamu Muazu, former governor of Bauchi State and one-time National Chairman of the PDP, who turned 70.

“As Vice President of Nigeria between 1999 and 2007, I worked with Mu’azu and other governors who served within that period to lay the foundation for good governance and a private sector-led economic growth for Nigeria.

“I used the occasion to congratulate Mu’azu and wish him many more years in good health and vitality.”

NUJ @ 70: Tinubu urges media to promote democratic progress

The Federal Government has urged the media to take the lead in promoting narratives that reflect Nigeria’s democratic progress and achievements.

President Bola Tinubu made the call at the 70th Anniversary Gala/Award Night and Book Presentation of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, held in Abuja on Saturday.

Tinubu, who was the Special Guest of Honour, was represented by the Chief Host and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris.

According to Tinubu, he possesses an affinity with the Nigerian press that is unparalleled in the history of the Nigerian presidency.

He, therefore, urged the media to use its platform to reinforce national unity, trust, and democratic consolidation.

“As we mark the 26 years of continuous democratic governance in Nigeria, the media must champion the narratives that reflect the country’s democratic gains — stories of institutional reforms, infrastructural development, citizen engagement, and socio-economic advancement.

“By constructively spotlighting these milestones, the media not only honours the sacrifices that birthed the nation’s democracy but also helps to promote national cohesion and public trust in democratic institutions.

“In doing so, the media solidifies its role as a key pillar in sustaining and deepening Nigeria’s democratic journey,” he said.

Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to press freedom, noting that vibrant and responsible media remained essential to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

He also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance ethical journalism in Nigeria through a strategic partnership with UNESCO to establish a Category-2 Institute for Media and Information Literacy in Abuja.

While acknowledging the media’s role in holding the government accountable, the President emphasised his administration’s desire to partner with journalists to foster national peace and development.

FG invests N200bn in agriculture, distributes free fertilisers

The Federal Government has invested over N200 billion in the agricultural sector as part of its efforts to boost food production and ensure national food security.

The Minister of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, in a statement released on Sunday said, ”the Ministry has invested over N200bn in terms of intervention and has also given out free of charge two million, one hundred and fifty thousand naira fertilisers to support farmers across the country,”

Kyari also revealed that the ministry distributed fertilisers worth over N2.15m free of charge to farmers nationwide to support cultivation and improve yields.

The minister continued by commending the Government of The Gambia for seeking a partnership with Nigeria aimed at improving food production and economic growth.

He also added that the journey towards food sufficiency in Nigeria has not been easy but noted significant progress made with the support of development partners such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the World Bank.

“It has been a tough journey for the present government to arrive at being food sufficient and has opted for the game in terms of production through development partners like FAO, World Bank among others to increase production,” Kyari stated.

Reflecting on the administration’s commitment to agriculture, Kyari noted that, “When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,  came into power in 2023, and was committed to making sure that Nigeria is food secured, which propelled him to give a marching order that ‘we must achieve food security and food sovereignty.”

He explained that the renaming of the ministry from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security was a strategic response to food insecurity driven by climate change, COVID-19, and natural disasters such as flooding.

Highlighting Nigeria’s push towards mechanised agriculture, Kyari stressed the importance of attracting youth into the sector.

“We have a huge capacity within our youths, but because of the laborious nature involved, it scares away our youths,” he said, referring to the laborious nature of traditional farming methods.

The minister also celebrated advancements in rice and wheat cultivation, pointing to successful research outcomes.

“Rice is one of those areas you have mentioned but I believe that we have also achieved a lot of milestones in research, crops, like Wheat for instance is something that we are working on and has consistently shown an improvement and success from when we started in 2023.

“In 2023 farmers were also assisted with imported wheat seeds and as at last year, no seed was imported, because we have developed our own seeds internally and were able to cultivate almost 500 metric tons of wheat within Nigeria to boost productivity through our various research institutes and Agencies under the Ministry,” Kyari added.

While acknowledging the continued challenges in the rice sector, particularly with affordability and availability, Kyari identified the outgrower scheme as a major tool for empowering small-scale farmers.

Constitution review: Senate to hold public hearing in six geopolitical zones

The Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution is set to organise a comprehensive 2-day Zonal Public Hearing in the country’s six geo-political zones

Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, in a statement said the hearing was to gather Nigerians’ input on the proposed constitutional amendments.

The committee, chaired by the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I Jibrin, said the public hearing which will be held simultaneously in Lagos (South West), Enugu (South East), Ikot Ekpene (South South, Jos (North Central) Maiduguri, (North East) and Kano (North West), was convened to gather the inputs of citizens on the proposed amendments to the nation’s Constitution.

The hearing, scheduled for July 4th and 5th, 2025, will examine critical national issues, including local government autonomy, electoral and judicial reforms, state creation, state police and inclusive governance.

It said one of the bills, proposes the establishment of Local Government Councils as a tier of government to guarantee their democratic existence and tenure, as part of a renewed push to grant full autonomy to the country’s 774 Local Government Councils.

The second bill on local government reforms seeks to create an independent National Local Government Electoral Commission (NALGEC) to organise, conduct and supervise local government elections.

Also to be considered during the zonal public hearing are two bills on security and policing for the establishment of state police and state security council to coordinate internal security policies at the sub-national level.

In the area of fiscal reforms, six bills are going to be considered including the one to empower the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission to enforce compliance of remittance of accruals into and disbursement of revenue from the Federation Account and streamline the procedure for reviewing the revenue allocation formula.

Also, on fiscal reforms, a bill to alter the provisions of the constitution to specify the period within which the president or the governor of a state shall present the appropriation bill before the National Assembly or House of Assembly will be discussed during the hearing.

In a fresh move toward gender equity, the Committee will also consider a bill to provide additional seats for women in the National and State Houses of Assembly.

To strengthen traditional institutions, a Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution to establish the National Council of Traditional Rulers, the State Council of Traditional Rulers, and the Local Government Council of Traditional Rulers would also be considered.

On electoral reforms, a proposal seeking the amendment of the 1999 Constitution to allow for independent candidacy at all levels of election, from local councils to the presidency, will also be discussed at the public hearing. This is just as a bill for diaspora voting to enfranchise Nigerians abroad has been listed for consideration.

Pro-Iran protest in Kastina as youths cancel Trump and Israel’s Netanyahu

Youths in Katsina State have taken to the streets in a protest to show their support for Iran, while also denouncing the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.

This development was revealed in a post shared on a popular social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter).

According to the post, the protest was staged in solidarity with the Iranian government amid the ongoing crisis between Iran and Israel, which is reportedly backed by the US.

In a viral video, the protesting youths were seen in large numbers, parading the streets with a massive banner featuring the face of the Iranian leader and a map of the country.

The same banner also displayed images of President Trump and PM Netanyahu, both of which were defaced or crossed out—signifying their rejection by the protesters.

As the post circulated online, many concerned individuals flooded the comment section to express their thoughts and reactions to the unusual demonstration.

NYCN demands probe into murder of 13-yr-old Ebonyi boy in Anambra

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State Chapter has called for investigations into the gruesome murder of a 13-year-old boy, Fabian Ugo of Ndioke Nduebor Okpuitumo who was allegedly murdered by the operatives of Operation Udo Ga Achi in Anambra State.
NYCN’s Director, Media and Publicity, Comrade Stephen Maduabuchi Nkoka in a statement made available to newsmen maintained that a diligent investigation and review must be carried on the operations of Udo Ga Achi security outfit in Anambra State.
“We demand justice for the murdered youth. Our organisation will not continue to fold its hands while youths of Ebonyi State are gruesomely murdered by the operatives in Anambra State.
“As the National Council of Nigeria Youths (NYCN), we condemn in its entirety, this horrific and barbaric acts and therefore demand that an arrest and due public prosecution of the personnel(s) involved in the act be carried out with immediate effect.
“That an adequate burial rite and condolences to the bereaved family and our state at large be accorded the needed respect,” Nkoka said.
The group also appealed to the youths in Ebonyi to avoid any revolt that could escalate into violence. “We are calling on the aggrieved youths never to result to self-defense, believing that the authorities in charge will do the needful.”

Will: Widow, executors on warpath

Wife of a Second Republic Anambra State legislator, Mrs Chinelo Nwobu-Alor, has accused executors of her late husband’s Will of denying her access to her husband’s funds to enable her take proper care of herself and the children and property left by her husband.

She told newsmen that her late husband, Chief Sylvester Nwobu-Alor, left a Will, wherein he listed former Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, Senator Uche Ekwunife and his (late husband’s lawyer), Chief Obi Okafor as executors of his Will, saying because Obi was very busy with national politics, he authorised his brother, Rev Father Fabian Obi, to represent him.

She alleged that her husband willed N45m to her, if he passed on, if she remained in his house after his demise, but that if she left for her biological home, she should be given N5m annually from the N45m at the beginning of every year.

She, however, lamented that the executors had rather been giving her N5m annually, instead of releasing to her the N45m at once as her husband authorised.

She further said though the executors had been giving her N5 million annually, the money was not given to her at the beginning of the year but sometimes in the fifth month.

She further accused one of her husband’s brothers (name withheld) of trying to eject her and her children from part of her husband’s house to take over the apartment, saying her husband allegedly gave him part of the main building called traditionally as “Obu” in Igbo language.

She also accused the executors of managing her husband’s foundation without getting her involved.

“I know that my husband left millions of naira in different commercial banks, but, those he entrusted with the execution of his Will have not been taking care of me, and my children. Instead, they are taking care of themselves with the money.

Peter Obi’s media aide, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, confirmed that his boss nominated his brother-priest, Rev Fr. Fabian Obi, to replace him as an executor of the Will because of his tight schedules, especially his involvement in national politics.

Obienyem said contrary to the widow’s claim that it was provided that she should be given N45m if she accepted to stay after her husband passed on, what the Will says was that N45m  be given to her at N5m annually at the beginning of every year, but that she loses all her entitlements if she leaves after her husband died.

Obienyem also explained that the Will further contained that if she leaves for her biological home after the demise of her husband and with their children, she should still be given the N5m annually, but that if she however leaves the children behind, the N5m from the N45m should be used to take care of the children annually.

Fr. Fabian Obi declined to respond to any of the widow’s claims.

When contacted, the late lawmaker’s lawyer and one of the executors, Barrister Obi Okoye, said the window had been making bogus financial demands and maligning members of the team.

“We have implemented the Will, and we have given everyone what was provided for the person in it,” the lawyer said.

He said the widow initially demanded N15 million to re-roof her house and as they were considering the amount too much for just re-roofing, she again demanded N55. 7 million saying she wanted to re-roof the whole house and do other things in the house.

“I said where would such amount of money come from? Remember that Nwobu-Alor had a foundation which he said in the Will that it should be run,” Okoye said.

He said he advised the widow to go and apply to the court for any money she wanted and promised her that any approval by court would be given to her.

“We don’t want to spend any money not contained in the Will except that approved by the court so that tomorrow nobody would accuse us of any fraud. And I have assured her that I will not oppose any application she files in the court,” he stated.

Delta: Mother of 14-year-old killed by police van demands justice

The mother of 14-year-old Wisdom Chukwudi, who was tragically killed by a police van in Okuokoko, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, has cried out for justice over the death of her son.

The fatal incident occurred on Monday, June 16, along the Okuokoko axis of the East-West Road.

Eyewitnesses said the teenager was standing off the road when a police Hilux van, allegedly driven recklessly, veered off the highway and crushed him against an electric pole.

Reports indicated that the vehicle was driven by a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) attached to the Bayelsa State Police Command, who lost control before the accident.

The grieving mother, Jennifer Otono, with the support of Delta-based activist Kelvin Ejumudo, expressed frustration over the lack of response from the police, noting that no officer or representative of the force had reached out to her since the incident.

They called on the Nigerian Police to identify the officer responsible and ensure he is brought to justice.

Edo: Man In Police net over alleged killing of girlfriend

The Edo State Police Command has announced the arrest of a 31 year old man, Joshua Osaigbovo, for the alleged murder of 21 year old girlfriend identified as Osato Festus Edogiaweria.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, the case came to light when the mother of the deceased, Mrs Ojo, reported at the Aduwawa Division on 25 April, 2025, that her daughter, Osato, had left home five days earlier with a friend and had not been heard since then.

Yamu said the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department, where detectives launched a painstaking investigation, employing both traditional and technical means.

He added that the efforts led to the arrest of the suspect, Joshua Osaigbovo, in the Iyanomon Community of Ikpoba Okha local government area on 18 June, 2025.

During interrogation, Osaigbovo confessed to inviting the deceased to his residence on 27 April, 2025, where an altercation ensued.

The suspect claimed that Osato fell and struck her head on the ground, dying on the spot but in a bid to cover up the crime, he transported the body in a wheelbarrow to a nearby bush and buried it in a shallow grave a few metres from his home.

On 20 June, 2025, Osaigbovo led detectives to the site where Osato’s remains were exhumed in the presence of the relevant authorities.

Yamu said the suspect is expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Police Command reassured the public of its commitment to tackling all forms of crime and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to book.

Bayelsa: How State High Court Judge was kidnapped

Fresh facts have emerged on how yet-to-be-identified gunmen abducted a Bayelsa State High Court Judge, Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro, at the Ekeki suburb of Yenagoa, the state capital.

On Saturday night, Justice Omukoro of Court 7 was seized in front of a popular eatery, Kilimanjaro, near the usually busy Ekeki motor park after a struggle.

According to sources, he was in the company of two of his daughters to buy a loaf of bread from the eatery when the gunmen struck.

Many believed that the abducted judge might have been trailed to the eatery by the masked armed men clad in black combat attire.

It was learned that two gunmen were sighted coming down from a white Hilux van, tapping on the glass of the Judge’s Prado jeep, which was rolled down. He (Justice Omukoro) was said to be on call with his mobile phone.

One eyewitness said he overheard the gunmen telling the judge, “our Oga wants to see you”, but the judge replied, “Are you aware am a judge? Tell your Oga to come and see me here.”

The source added that the armed men walked away from the judge’s car and made some calls to an unknown person.

“Three of the gunmen later walked back, banging loudly on the judge’s car and forcibly opened the door and dragged him down.

“The judge was seen struggling with the gunmen, but nobody could venture to move close.

He was eventually forced into their car, a white Hilux van, unchallenged and whisked away,” the source said.

It was, however, learned that the kidnappers left the telephone of the judge and another phone believed to be owned by one of them at the crime scene.

A source told this reporter on Sunday that the phones that fell down during the struggle to forcibly abduct the judge who resisted them have been handed over to the police in Yenagoa.

A resident, who spoke anonymously for safety reasons, said: “We initially thought the gunmen were either police operatives or men of the Department of State Services, DSS, but the guns they were carrying were not that of the Secret Service, neither was their uniform written police. But they wore black combat uniforms with bulletproof vests.

“It was not until the real police arrived that we suspected foul play, that the armed men were kidnappers.”

Police sources at the Ekeki Divisional Headquarters also confirmed that a passerby picked up phones, including that of the judge, which were turned in.

Justice Umokoro, a one-time State Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, is known for driving himself around town without his security detail during off duty.

Contacted, the Spokesman of the state police command, Musa Mohammed, said the police have commenced a discreet investigation into the matter.

INEC has no right to control our meetings – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly rejected what it describes as unwarranted interference by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in its internal affairs, declaring that INEC lacks the constitutional power to regulate its meetings such as the National Executive Committee (NEC) sessions, unless such meetings involve the election of party officers or candidates.
This position was made clear during a media interactive session held on Sunday at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, where the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, addressed journalists on key developments ahead of its 100th NEC meeting scheduled for June 30, 2025.
According to Ologunagba, the PDP had duly notified INEC of the upcoming NEC meeting in line with established practice, even though such meetings fall outside the categories of political events that legally require INEC’s involvement.
“INEC has no role in the regular meetings of the NWC or NEC. These are internal party matters, as clearly established by the Supreme Court in numerous rulings,” Ologunagba stated.
He explained that under Nigeria’s laws and the PDP constitution, INEC is only required to be notified of conventions, congresses, or primaries involving the election of party officers or candidates.
“We did not state that the meeting was for electing officers, conducting primaries, or nominating candidates for elective positions. Yet, the Acting Secretary of INEC, Halilu Aminu, decided to unilaterally assign a purpose to our meeting,” he said.
The PDP’s 100th NEC meeting, Ologunagba added, will review progress on preparations for its forthcoming national convention, including updates from the Zoning and Convention Committees constituted at the 99th NEC meeting.
“At the 99th NEC meeting, it was unanimously agreed to schedule the next meeting for the 30th of June. The constitution of the Zoning Committee and the Convention Committee was approved. Consultations with various organs of the party and stakeholders are ongoing,” he said.
The PDP spokesman also clarified that the PDP had complied with the 21-day notification rule and submitted its notice to INEC on May 13, which was acknowledged by the commission on the same day.
However, INEC, in a response dated June 13, raised concerns over the signatories to the PDP’s letter, stating that the notice was invalid because it was not jointly signed by the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary, as required under its regulations.
Ologunagba rejected this interpretation, insisting that INEC had no authority to dictate who could sign internal party correspondence, especially since the PDP had an Acting National Chairman and Acting National Secretary in place.
“Whoever signs a letter is an internal affair of the party. It is not for INEC to dictate who can or cannot sign. If an Acting Secretary signed the letter, we couldn’t have rejected it on that basis,” he said.
He accused the commission of attempting to undermine the PDP and frustrate its internal processes under the guise of regulation, suggesting it was part of a wider agenda to stifle opposition and tilt the country toward a one-party system.
“Why this desperation to undermine political parties, seemingly to push towards a one-party state and stifle opposition? This is push-pull thinking, it’s a hallucination. The APC should understand that this is a delusion,” he warned.

JAMB fixes date for mop-up UTME examination

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, (JAMB), has fixed Saturday, June 28, 2025 for the conduct of a mop-up Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, (UTME), for 96,838 candidates.

Spokesman for JAMB, Fabian Benjamin, made this disclosure in a statement, on Sunday.

Benjamin explained that the affected candidates could start printing their examination notification slips beginning from Monday, June 23.

“The first session for the examination day starts, as usual, at 8:00am. Candidates for the 8:00am session are therefore advised in their own interest to arrive one or one and half hour before the actual commencement of the examination at 8:00am.

“This examination will accommodate the 5,096 spill-over candidates and those who failed biometric verification during the main exercise.

“Also, due to the special dispensation granted to absentee candidates of the main and resit examinations, 91,742 candidates who were absent in both or either of the main and resit examinations would also be given this opportunity which is only for 2025 UTME. Thus 96,838 candidates are being rescheduled for the 2025 mop up exercise in 183 centres across the nation while others are kept on standby,” he said.

The Board further announced that 113 Computer-Based Test, (CBT), centres across the country have been suspended or delisted due to various infractions uncovered during the conduct of the UTME.

The tertiary institution examination body stressed that some of the affected centres were found to have committed technical infractions during the mock and main examinations, while others were implicated in ongoing security investigations into examination malpractice.

“In addition to centres being delisted for technical deficiencies during the mock, UTME and resit examinations, a large number of CBT centres implicated for sharp practices in the on-going security investigation are being suspended and those found culpable would be delisted and reported for prosecution.

“Consequently, 113 CBT centres have been delisted or suspended from across the country. Some other implicated in multiple infractions in the main or resit examinations exercise,” it said.

The Board appreciated the security agencies, especially the State Security Service, (SSS), the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDS, for their extra -ordinary devotion, passion and tenacity in the on-going nation-wide special investigation of identity theft and examination malpractices syndicates.

According to the Board, the investigation led to the arrest and prosecution of tens of culprits, including few JAMB officials, professional examination takers and syndicates of some school proprietors and tutorial centres.

Tinubu chairs last ordinary session as ECOWAS picks new leader

President Bola Tinubu is hosting 11 of his counterparts at the 67th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States.

The 12 presidents arrived at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, at 05:05 pm local time.

Sunday’s meeting is Tinubu’s last as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, a role he assumed on July 9, 2023, after his election in Guinea-Bissau.

He was re-elected for a second one-year term on July 7, 2024, in Abuja and will formally round off his leadership at the summit.

“As the agenda of the Summit we endorsed indicated, the election of a new Chair of Authority, this may be my last Council Session as the Chair of this Council,” Tuggar said.

Tinubu supported June 12 annulment, not part of pro-democracy struggle – Lamido

A former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu supported the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and was not part of the early pro-democracy resistance that followed.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Saturday, Lamido said Tinubu, who was a senator under the Social Democratic Party during the election, was “a major supporter” of former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, who annulled the poll.

Lamido said,” Luckily, we were all alive. We were all there and participants in that affair of political history. I was in the middle of it.

“Tinubu became relevant and noticeable after Abacha took over the government,” Lamido said.

“With all respect to him, he was part of those people who supported Babangida’s annulment of June 12.

He was part of them.

“His own mother, Haija Mogaji from Lagos, organised the Lagos market women to Abuja to support Babangida.

“I’m saying this because it is history. I mean no harm or disrespect.”

Lamido added that he found Tinubu’s public remarks about his role in the democratic struggle unconvincing.

“I feel highly entertained by Tinubu’s rhetoric. The way he is dramatising his own role in Nigerian democracy,” he said.

Lamido alleged,” He was actively hand-in-glove with Babangida.

“Tinubu, after being Nigerian president, decided to rewrite and deconstruct history. It is very amusing.

He was part of Babangida’s supporters on June 12.

“It was when Abacha took over the government that Tinubu became the so-called activist of June 12.”

Lamido also criticised members of the National Democratic Coalition, which Tinubu later joined, saying they only emerged after General Sani Abacha seized power.

“All those NADECO (activists), where were they on June 11?

They were not part of the June 12 campaign and activities.

“He was a major supporter of Babangida,” he said.

He further claimed that while he and others stayed back to resist the military, Tinubu left the country.

“Tinubu ran away from the country,” Lamido said.

He concluded by expressing political opposition to the President, saying he is prepared to align with others to remove Tinubu from office in the 2027 general election.

Uzodimma: A new Imo requires deliberate efforts of all

As Catholics celebrate the solemnity of the body and blood of Jesus Christ made manifest in the Holy Eucharist, the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma has encouraged the faithful to recognise the ultimate sacrifice made by our Lord Jesus Christ for the redemption of mankind and replicate same by working for the greater interest of humanity.

Senator Uzodimma made the suggestion at the end of the Church Service held at the Government House Chapel Owerri, Sunday.

The Governor maintained that God expects all humans to give their best in any form they can in the greater interest of the society, pointing out that “it was time for us Imo people to set our priorities right and make sacrifices to fully restore our State.”

He regretted that people were in the habit of betraying the trust the positions and offices they occupy in government confer on them, but was full of commendations to all who have sincerely supported his efforts to reposition the State, particularly during the period of insecurity “when Imo State was almost lost to non state actors.”

Governor Uzodimma stressed that it was only by God’s grace that Imo was restored.

His words: “I thank God that despite all provocations, God’s intervention saved the State from total collapse.”

He however announced that a special day will be set aside for Imo people to collectively gather to thank God for the restoration of their State.

Senator Uzodimma therefore enjoined all citizens to submit to the new leadership vision which is poised to chat a part to building a culture of sustainable credible legacies.

“I am almost confident that by the time our people begin to benefit from the new arrangement, they will rise to defend it if anybody wants us to go back to Egypt,” he said, adding that the concern of Imo people should be to seek for “a successor who will sustain existing legacies in the State.”

Delivering the Homily earlier, the visiting priest, Rev. Fr. Dr. Augustine Agowike explained that the Eucharist is the memorial of Jesus Christ’s last meal with his disciples which is inseparable from His passion and death on the cross.

Rev. Agowike noted that the Eucharist is a celebration of oneness in the body of Christ, calling on Christians of all denominations to realise the essence of unity, while praying God for unity and love in our State and nation at large.

CPC law,  a blessing to consumers in Imo -Okafor

The Director General of Consumer Protection Council (CPC) In Imo State, Dr Mrs Obioma Okafor has described the Bill for a law to establish the Imo State Consumer Protection Council, provide for the protection of interest of consumer, settlement of consumer disputes and connected purpose 2024 passed into law by the Imo State House of Assembly as a blessing to consumers in the state.

Mrs Okafor who disclosed this to STATESMAN in her office, expressed optimism that the Consumers in the State were happy with the law because it has giving CPC enough power to protect the right of consumers.

The CPC boss made it clear that with the law, no producer or manufacturer has any right to sub change any consumer in the state, adding that with the existence of the law, the consumers will be bold to demand for their right.

Okafor also expressed joy that the law makes provision for Alternative Disputes Resolution, which she said means that CPC can settle disputes between producer and consumer, instead of the consumer going to court.

“With this Law consumer should be rejoicing.The consumers will be bold to demand for their right. The 3R policy of CPC , Right to Repair, Refund and Replacement will be fully effective. CPC was established in 2005 and its State law in 2025. I urged the consumers to keep their eyes open.The vision of CPC is all about protection of consumers.”

She commended the State House of Assembly for its efforts to pass the bill into Law and described the gesture as a selfless sacrifice the House members did because of the love they have for consumers.

“The 10th House of Assembly know the plight of consumers in the state and its members know that this Law is very necessary and they decided that this Bill must be passed into Law. I thank God who made it possible.”

She thanked the State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma for providing enabling environment for CPC to function effectively.

2027: Abacha’s former aide, Al-Mustapha declares to run for presidency under SD

As the political cloud begins to gather, former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General SaniAbacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, has formally declared his intention to run for president in 2027.

Al-Mustapha said he would be contesting for the Presidency under the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

He disclosed this in Minna, Niger State, at a meeting with the state executive committee of SDP.

“I am pained and deeply concerned about the current state of the nation. However, with the right direction and commitment, Nigeria can rise again.

“Though the road ahead may be rough, together we can rebuild the Nigeria we all deserve,” he said.

He described the meeting as part of a broader strategy to engage with stakeholders across the country in preparation for the 2027 polls.

Speaking, the SDP State Chairman, Alhaji Buhari Yakubu Yarima, applauded him for the declaration.

He commended the former CSO for his commitment to national service.

“We are confident that with credible candidates and a clear vision, the SDP will be a force to reckon with in 2027,” he said.

Initially, there were reports that SDP was the vehicle for the opposition coalition by former Vice President AtikuAbubakar.

However, the party’s former presidential candidate, Adewale Adebayo said SDP is not part of the coalition.

Suspected diphtheria cases surge in Edo

Suspected cases of diphtheria have surged in Edo State amid fears of a dearth of vaccines across the state.

It was gathered that the University of Benin Teaching Hospital is overwhelmed with patients with referral cases of suspected diphtheria.

Edo Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, did not pick up calls when our reporter sought to know the number of deaths recorded so far.

Sources at UBTH said more persons have died from diphtheria disease since two deaths were recorded last week.

A doctor at the hospital said the hospital was overwhelmed with patients.

He said the patients were referred on suspicion of having diphtheria.

Spokesman for UBTH, Uwaila Joshua, could not be reached for comments as his cell phone was switched off.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Government said it has activated an emergency public health response in response to the outbreak of Diphtheria in some parts of the State.

It said Governor Monday Okpebholo has deployed all necessary resources and expertise to arrest the situation as well as safeguard the health of residents.

Chief Press Secretary to Okpebholo, Fred Itua, said the Governor was personally coordinating surveillance and monitoring efforts to ensure a swift and effective containment of the disease.

According to him, “Hospitals across the State have been placed on high alert and instructed to intensify case detection, prompt isolation, and proper clinical management of suspected cases in accordance with national and international guidelines.

“Medical personnel are being briefed and equipped to respond appropriately, while the State’s disease surveillance network is being expanded to trace and monitor potential contacts swiftly.

“In addition, Governor Okpebholo has convened a multi-sectoral emergency meeting with representatives from the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), World Health Organisation (WHO), traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, and community development groups to harmonise efforts and strengthen the response framework.”

Abia Fed law maker laments six years of darkness in Ohafia, applauds Otti two yrs in office

The member representing Ohafia/ Arochukwu federal Constituency, Hon. Osonwa Okwara Ibe, has cried out over six years of darkness in Ohafia in Abia state.

The law maker disclosed this to a section of journalists while speaking on the two years anniversary of Dr Alex Otti.

Hon Ibe said it is extremely sad and painful that a city as large as Ohafia has been in darkness for six year, as he recalled the effort he has put in place to ensure light illuminate in the once bubbling city know for it culture and hard work

He said he has on several occasion raised the matter at the floor of the federal House, he said the committee in charge of electricity came and saw things for themselves with assurance that the electricity issue will be looked into.

The law maker noted that vandalism and very high electricity bill running over two billion naira from Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, has been the major set back.

Osonwa said the outrageous bill was handed over to the people of his constituents, despite the fact that there has been no power supply to Ohafia for up to six years.

He urged the people to always protect government facilities in their area, noting that the vandalism they are talking about were done by hoodlums, who vandalized and stole vital component. He assured that he wil not relent until electricity is reinstated  in Ohafia.

The checkpoints inspection team of Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma has arrested seven personnel of the Command  for various infractions, including extortion of motorists and passengers.

This disclosure was contained in a Press Statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, and made available to The Statesman in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

According to the Statement, the inspection of checkpoints and subsequent arrest of erring officers was as a result of renewed effort to entrench professionalism, discipline, and public confidence in police operations.

It disclosed that the inspection followed reports and complaints from members of the public concerning alleged acts of extortion, harassment, and other forms of unprofessional conduct by some police personnel on field duties.

“During the tour, CP Danjuma addressed officers at various duty posts, reiterating the core values of modern policing — discipline, integrity, and respect for human rights. He issued a stern warning that any officer found engaging in extortion, intimidation, or misconduct will face strict disciplinary action, including dismissal and possible prosecution.

“In an open and reassuring engagement, the CP also interacted with several motorists and commuters, urging them not to give money to any police officer on duty or surrender their mobile phones for unauthorized searches. He emphasized that such acts are unlawful, unethical, and will not be tolerated.

‘To strengthen accountability and promote public confidence, CP Danjuma personally distributed the emergency contact numbers of the Command’s X-Squad and Complaint Response Unit (CRU), encouraging the public to report any misconduct through these channels. He assured that all reports will be treated promptly, professionally, and with full confidentiality.

Benue massacre: Gov Alia’s PSA sacks Chief of Staff, CPS for joining protest

Principal Special Assistant to the governor of Benue State on Youth and Media Mobilization, Hon. AtuTerver Joseph has sacked his Chief of Staff and Chief Press Secretary, Mr. John Ukeyima and MrLubemTerkula, respectively, for protesting the wanton killings going on in the state.

Terver made the disclosure on Sunday night in a letter addressed to the two aides, accusing them of working against the state government.

The letter reads, “This letter serves as formal notification of your immediate and indefinite suspensions from your position as Chief of Staff and Chief press secretary, effective today, June 14, 2025.

“This decision has been made due to your actions that have been deemed as working against the explicit directives of your Principal.

“Such conduct is a serious breach of your duties and the trust placed in your office.

“During the period of this indefinite suspension, you are to refrain from all official duties and responsibilities, and you are not permitted to represent this office or me in any capacity”.

The report had it that hundreds of Benue youths staged a protest in Makurdi the state capital on Sunday to draw global attention to the incessant and deadly attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The protest was triggered by the recent attack in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area of the state where nearly 250 people were killed.

Kano man sets self on fire, claims he’s heading to paradise

A tragic incident has thrown the Panshekara community in Kano into mourning after a young man, Suleiman Muntari, shocked passersby by setting himself ablaze in broad daylight.

Witnesses said Muntari showed signs of emotional and mental distress before the act.

Reports said he was seen wandering along the road, muttering to himself – a sign viewed to be abnormal.

Moments later, he poured petrol on his body and lit a match.

“He said he wanted to go to Paradise. People around thought he was just talking out of stress or frustration. Nobody imagined he would actually go through with it,” said SaminuIsah, who was at the scene.

Before anyone could react or stop him, he was already on fire. Several people tried to help, but the flames spread too quickly.

Some residents suspect he may have been under the influence of substance that altered his state of mind.

“It was obvious he wasn’t okay. You could tell from the way he was walking and talking. There was a strong smell coming from him, and he was shouting things that didn’t make sense,” explained Aisha Salisu, a woman who lives nearby.

While local authorities are yet to release an official statement, the disturbing scene has sparked a new debate about wave of mental cases amongst youths.

School teacher sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for defiling under age male student

An Anambra State High Court; a sexual and gender based violence court sitting at Awka has sentenced a 34 years old school teacher to 12 years in prison for raping an 11 years old student.

The teacher, Mr Pascal Ofomata, was convicted of defiling the boy, who is his student, a Junior Secondary one student of St Christopher’s Junior Seminary, 3-3 area in Onitsha.

Speaking immediately after handing down the judgement, the presiding judge, Justice Peace Otti commended the industry and brilliance of the prosecution counsel, ChineloAkorah Esq. for conclusively following the matter.

She was quoted as saying that Akorah’s final address was compelling and comprehensive. She said it is very rare to see cases of sexual offenses against boys get to a conclusive end and offenders meted with justice.

The defendant had earlier denied having canal knowledge of the boy, stating that he never penetrated the victim’s anus, he, however, admitted that the victim sucked his penis and that he told him to kiss him.

The court, however, upheld the case after an intense and intriguing trial that involved the testimonies of the investigating police officer and the doctor who examined the victim.

The defendant was convicted and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.

The defendant, Pascal Ofomata had earlier pleaded not guilty in the three count charge prefered against him.

He was charged with rape and inflicting physical harm on the boy, a charge that is punishable under section 3(1), 4 (1) respectively of the Violence against Persons Prohibition Law of Anambra State.

The third charge against him is the offense of sexual abuse punishable under section 35 (2) of the Child’s Right Law of Anambra State.

The court, in addition, barred him from getting employment in any establishment with persons under 18 such as primary, secondary, and even tertiary institutions.

PDP  leaders  regroup in  Abia North, vow  to reclaim  lost seats  in 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party PDP, in Abia North zone has declared a renewed commitment to reclaim the zone  and other parts of the State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abia North is the home of Senator Orji Kalu, Deputy Speaker House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, IbeOkwaraOsonwa, AmobiOgah, and other legislators.

It was previously controlled by the PDP before APC and LP swept it away in the 2019 and 2023 elections.

But PDP zonal  leaders and stakeholders from five LGAs of Ohafia, Arochukwu, Isuikwuato, Umunnochi and Bende, who met during a stakeholders’ meeting at the  country home of EtugoOgah in Isuikwuato, said they have resolved to reclaim the Abia North zone, the Government House and other parts of the State for PDP in 2027.

Reading the communique at the close of the meeting, the PDP State Legal Adviser, Barr. Kingsley Imaga, noted that their discussions were centered on party progress, unity and strategy for future success.

According to the communique, the leaders declared their collective resolve to build a more formidable force that can overwhelmingly win future elections, take over Government House in Umuahia and present a government that truly reflects the will and aspirations of the people.

They further emphasized ongoing support for all party structures, from ward to state levels, and reiterated the importance of grassroots mobilization, loyalty, and internal cohesion.

“The time to rebuild and reclaim Abia State is now. We leave this meeting reinvigorated and inspired with a new sense of hope to enthrone good governance”,  thecommunique read in part.

Abia North PDP chairman,  Gabriel Elendu, assured members that the PDP remained strong and united in Abia North, assuring that most party members who dumped PDP will return.

In his address, the Abia State PDP Chairman, Abraham Amah, outlined the party’s commitment to fielding only credible candidates in 2027, saying the era of candidate imposition was over.

“Each local government will choose their candidates. You have to show capacity before you emerge.

“Our nominations and tickets will only go to the best, those who truly represent the people”, he affirmed.

Ekiti ’26: You are irrelevant to our party’s electoral success, PDP blasts Fayose

Ado-Ekiti–As the 2026 gubernatorial election gather momentum in Ekiti, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Southwest Zone has taken a swipe at the former governor in the State, AyodeleFayose, saying he’s irrelevant to the party’s electoral success.

The party stated this on Tuesday in Ikere-Ekiti, during the official inauguration of WoleOluyede’s campaign team ahead of the governorship poll.

Speaking with journalists in Ikere-Ekiti yesterday, Zonal Organising Secretary, Muwa Benson said Fayose has lost his relevance in the party, stressing that his endorsement of the opposition party won’t stop PDP from winning the gubernatorial election, with a promise to return governance to the people through a revitalised and united political front.

He described WoleOluyede as a dependable aspirant, whose experience in the electioneering process can’t be overemphasised.

Benson exuded confidence in Oluyede’s capacity to steer the wheel of Ekiti State, explaining that the APC government has brought nothing but suffering to the residents of the state.

He urged members of the public to support the committee members to make the struggle to reclaim power easier, noting that the party is fully prepared to bounce back stronger and establish a formidable political structure capable of regaining control of the state.

His words, “If you look at PDP today, it is those who have benefited, those who have used this platform to achieve, they are the ones throwing away the baby with the bathwater.

“They are those whose destiny are still tied to this party. They are those who are here to take their own benefit of democracy.

“The fact that Fayose supported his own son in an election he did not win, his own son ran on the platform of the party for the House of Reps, but he didn’t win. So it shows what support is he going to give another person that will translate to victory?

“With due respect, he’s our leader but he has lost his base and when the base is taken away, in law we say you don’t put something on nothing and you expect it to stand.

“We are not losing anybody by losing our leader Fayose. He has taken his share, he has chosen to be away but the masses of Ekiti know that this is the time for PDP to move”.

Also speaking, a former Commissioner for Community Development under SegunMimiko’s administration in Ondo State, Clement Faboyede alleged that the Governor of the state, BiodunOyebanji has failed to commission a 1km road since he assumed office in 2023.

He said PDP remains the only political party that can save the people from the shackles of APC, adding that Oluyede is determined to take Ekiti to the next level.

“This man has been spending his money to rebuild the party, Ekiti State does not need a flyover, Ekiti has never commissioned 1km road in the last two years. Oluyede has experience in electioneering, he will move Ekiti forward, we will support him, we will stand by him because he’s capable of doing it”. He added

The PDP Southwest Zonal Publicity Secretary, SanyaAtofarati also urged members not to be swayed by incentives from opposition parties, emphasizing the need for loyalty and grassroots support for the Oloyede-led campaign team.

The event attracted party stalwarts, members and loyalists, who pledged their readiness towards securing PDP’s return to power in Ekiti State.

Nnamdi Kanu’s incitement responsible for mass violence in South-East, DSS witness tells Court

A witness of the Department of Security Services (DSS) yesterday, told a Federal High Court in Abuja that incitement of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu through his Biafra Radio Broadcast was responsible for the widespread violence in the South-Eastern part of the country.

The DSS witness alleged that Kanu directed his followers to deal with some targeted persons including security operatives.

Testifying in the on-going prosecution, the witness code named ‘PWDDD’ who is an operative of the DSS alleged that between 170 and 200 security agents were killed in South-East.

Led in evidence by the prosecuting lawyer in the alleged treason charges, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, the witness also attributed the killing of a former presidential aide, Ahmed Gulak to the alleged order of Kanu to the IPOB.

The witness also told the court that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) did not issue license to Nnamdi Kanu to import the radio transmitter he allegedly smuggled into the country to operate Radio Biafra.

The witness said, the number of security agents killed owing to the activities of members of IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the South East was between 170 and 200 and further gave details of how the late former aide to ex-President Gooluck Jonathan, Ahmed Gulak was killed on May 30, 2021 in Owerri, Imo State.

The witness said shortly after himself and members of his team recovered the transmitter from a premises in Ubuluisiuzor, Anambra State, and brought it to Abuja, the DSS wrote the NBC to inspect it and that, on November 9, 2015 the NBC sent a team of engineers, who inspected the transmitter and wrote a report.

Awomolo then, tendered a Certified True Copy (CTC) of the provisional assessment of radio transmitter report submitted by the NBC, which the witness said, indicated that the transmitter was a German made and that it was indeed a radio transmitter made for use on FM frequency.

The witness said, the report also stated that such transmitter could only be procured and installed after being issued a licence and that the NBC has not licensed Radio Biafra to broadcast in Nigeria.

The DSS official added that investigation by his team revealed that for one to operate a radio station in the country, one must apply to a regulator, who will issue a licence after due clearance by relevant security agencies.

The DSS witness said Kanu brought the transmitter into the country illegally without approval adding that, investigation confirmed that the defendant is the owner of the transmitter, which he kept in the premises of one Benjamin Madubugu.

The DSS witness said Kanu later came into the country and inspected the transmitter and made a video to satisfy members of the IPOB, who contributed money for the purchase of the transmitter.

He also read from some publications of the Vanguard newspaper, where it was reported that an arrested commander of ESN confessed to the activities of his group.

The witness said the ESN member, who he identified as Uzuoma Benjamin, aka Onye Army spoke about how he was recruited, how they allegedly received directives from the defendant, who, he said directed them to kill security agents and ensure that a deceased member of the group, Ikonso, was buried with 2000 human heads.

The witness also read where the said Onye Army claimed that himself and other members of his group used the heads of 10 girls to prepare charms for their protection.

He said investigation revealed that the invasion of Owerri prison by IPOB members was directed by Kanu in one of his broadcast for his followers to attack and kill security operatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The DSS official said further investigation revealed that the defendant, in his broadcast directed that Ikonso should be buried with 2,000 heads, but that only 30 were got.

He said when the DSS requested from the police to access Onye Army, the police claimed he had escaped from custody.

The witness said during one of DSS’ agents’ raid of ESN members’ hideout, “we saw some ESN members, about seven, with human heads and some eating human flesh, which they said was for spiritual fortification.

“We could not find Onye Army. The police said he had escaped from custody”, he said and added that,

there are records about the number of security agents allegedly killed in the South East and that the number stands between 170 and 200.

On how the ESN members operate, the witness said they are combatants, who carry arms and attacked homes of prominent individuals and traditional rulers in the region

He said because they lacked sufficient operational tools, they sometimes set up roadblocks during which they hijack vehicles for their operation.

The witness identified some public property which he said IPOB and ESN members attacked and destroyed in the South East, including police stations.

On how Gulak died, the witness said he was among the first responders to the scene where the late chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was killed and his corpse recovered.

He said on May 30, 2021 there was a total breakdown of law and order, as a result of the stay at home order declared by the defendant, through one of his broadcasts.

The witness said later that day one of his officers informed him that a prominent politician was killed around Obiagwu and that when they got to the spot, they saw what happened.

He said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area told him that Gulak was in a hired cab when he was killed by some IPOB members.

The witness said the driver told him that they were heading to the airport from Owerri town, when they saw a check point mounted by men of the Nigerian Air Force who were preventing people from accessing the airport, but decided to take another route where they ran into a check point by IPOB members.

He added that the driver further said the IPOB members ordered the three of them in the car to disembark, and demanded to know their tribes.

He said the driver told him he introduced himself as an Igbo person and that Gulak also said he was an Igbo man. But that while he (the driver) could speak the Igbo language when they were asked to speak in Igbo, Gulak could not, following which they asked him to remove his cap and saw a Muslim prayer marked on his forehead.

The witness said the driver added that upon seeing the prayer marked, one of the IPOB members said “he is one of them,” following which they shot and killed him.

The DSS official , who said he served in Imo State between 2019 and 2023 told the court that the deceased’s corpse was evacuated from the sport where he was killed in his (the witness’) car

Under cross examination by defence lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), the witness said, there is no record of the importation of the transmitter said to have been smuggled in to the country by Kanu.

He said he could not say when the transmitter was brought into the country, but that he was among those who located where it was kept in Anambra State and brought it to the DSS headquarters in Abuja.

On how they were able to locate the transmitter, the witness said his team used some equipment to analyse a video (showing Kanu inspecting the transmitter) to ascertain the location of the transmitter in Anambra.

He said he did not come across the names Benka Clearing and Forwarding and Chief Isaac Maduka in the course of investigation and that, he was not aware that Benka cleared the transmitter, as claimed by Ikpeazu.

When asked if he was aware that Radio Biafra was registered in London and broadcast from there, the witness said when Kanu was arrested in Lagos in 2015 he was arrested with his broadcast equipment.

He said he was not present when the defendant was arrested in Lagos and that all he said about his arrest in Lagos was what were relayed to him.

The witness said the two guns he said they found were not recovered in the container in which the transmitter was kept, but under the mattress of Benjamin Madubugu, who lived in the premises.

He added that Madubugu was later charged with unlawful possession of firearms.

The witness said the container was brought into the country by one Igwe Anyiba, who was later found to be living outside the country and said, he was not aware that the Imo State Government issued a statement to the effect that Gulak’s killing was political.

At the conclusion of the cross examination, the court discharged the witness and the trial Judge, Justice James Omotosho adjourned further hearing till June 19 for the prosecution to call its fifth witness.

FAAC: FG, States, LGs share N1.659trn May 2025 revenue

The Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) has shared a total sum of N1.659 trillion, being May 2025 Federation Account Revenue to the Federal, States and Local Governments.

The revenue was shared at the June  2025 Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting held in Abuja.

The N1.659 trillion total distributable revenue comprised distributable statutory revenue of N863.895 billion, distributable Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue of N691.714 billion, Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) revenue of N27.667 billion and Exchange Difference revenue of N76.614 billion.

A communiqué issued by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) indicated that total gross revenue of N2.942 trillion was available in the month of May 2025.  Total deduction for cost of collection was N111.908 billion while total transfers, interventions and refunds  was N1.171 trillion.

According to the communiqué, gross statutory revenue of N2.094 trillion was received for the month of May 2025. This was higher than the sum of N2.084 trillion received in the month of April 2025 by N10.023 billion.

Gross revenue of N742.820 billion was available from the Value Added Tax (VAT) in May 2025.  This was higher than the N642.265 billion available in the month of April 2025 by N100.555 billion.   Bawa Mokwa, Director (Press and Public Relations) in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) quoted the communiqué as saying that from the N1.659 trillion total distributable revenue, the Federal Government received total sum of N538.004 billion and the State Governments received total sum of N577.841 billion.

The Local Government Councils received N419.968 billion, while the sum of N124.076 billion (13 percent of mineral revenue) was shared to the benefiting State as derivation revenue.

On the N863.895 billion distributable statutory revenue, the communiqué stated that the Federal Government received N393.518 billion and the State Governments got N199.598 billion; the Local Government Councils pocketed N153.881 billion and the sum of N116.898 billion (13 percent of mineral revenue) was shared to the benefiting States as derivation revenue.

Also, from the N691.714 billion distributable Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue, the Federal Government got N103.757 billion, the State Governments received N345.857 billion and the Local Government Councils pocketed N242.100 billion.

A total sum of N4.150 billion was received by the Federal Government from the N27.667 billion Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL); the State Governments got N13.833 billion, and the Local Government Councils received N9.683 billion.

Similarly, from the N76.614 billion Exchange Difference revenue,  the communiqué stated that the Federal Government received N36.579 billion and the State Governments got N18.553 billion; the Local Government Councils received N14.304 billion, while the sum of N7.178 billion (13 percent of mineral revenue) was shared to the benefiting States as derivation revenue.

In May 2025, Companies Income Tax (CIT), Value Added Tax (VAT) and Import Duty increased significantly while CET Levies, Petroleum Profit Tax (PPT), Oil and Gas Royalty and Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) recorded decreases; Excise Duty increased only marginally.

Implement electoral, judicial reforms, APC Chieftain tells FG

Only successful electoral reforms will set the country back on the path of socio economic and infrastructural transformation as well as restore stability in the enforcement of law and order, a Chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Delta state, Dr Chris Amaechi Okobah has said.

Speaking on the state of the nation in Asaba yesterday, the APC stalwart, called on the federal government to implement the electoral reforms as a panacea towards achieving a credible , transparent , fair and all inclusive electoral process ahead of 2027 general elections.

He tasked civil society groups, the media, organized Labour and citizens as well as other critical stakeholders and institutions to bring pressure to bear on government on the urgent need for reforms in the electoral process that would not only make elections in to elective positions rancor free, less cumbersome , transparent, free and fair but also make the votes to count.The erudite scholar also harped on the need for judicial reforms which according to him hinged on successful electoral reforms adding that the nation’s judiciary has become a case of cash and carry while politicians would deliberately violate the electoral law and order and challenge anybody to go to court.

He decried the decay that had become of various institutions of government, calling for sweeping institutional overhaul to pave way for new direction and modus operandi in governance.

Dr Okobah urged Nigerians to adopt a positive attitude towards governance and the country, emphasizing the need for all to embrace a new National spirit of “Nigeria first”and exhibit such spirit in tackling the multi – dimensional challenges plaguing the Nation.

On the two years of the Tinubu administration. Dr Okobah said the Federal government had initiated several reforms that needed time to yield visible fruitful results, urging Nigerians to give the APC government more time to execute its economic recovery and poverty alleviation policies for the good of all Nigerians.

He expressed optimism that Nigerians would vote massively for President Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 and vowed to go to court to compel the incumbent President Bola Tinubu to contest the 2027 presidential elections if he decline to do so .

Reps threaten to sanction 13 oil firms over $456m unpaid revenue

The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee yesterday warned 13 non-compliant oil companies to appear before it to answer questions in the ongoing probe of non-remittance of monies due to the Federal Government, or face grave sanctions.

The companies are allegedly owing the Federal Government about $456.95m (N731.12 bn) in unremitted revenues.

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the House noted that despite repeated invitations and public notices through national newspapers, the companies failed to appear before the Committee, prompting the PAC to consider punitive actions in line with legislative and constitutional provisions.

According to the statement, the companies include Conoil Producing Ltd ($5m), Continental Oil & Gas Ltd ($57m), ⁠Energia Ltd ($19.5m), Frontier OML 13 ($952,216.51) and Millennium Oil & Gas Ltd ($2.07m).

Others are Neconde Energy Ltd ($326m), Pillar Oil Ltd ($4.6m), Waltersmith OML 16 ($8.7m), Aiteo Ltd ($34.8m), Bilton ($5m), Heirs Holdings ($137.7m), General Hydrocarbon Ltd ($22.5m) and Eroton ($34.5m).

“The Committee has scheduled the aforementioned companies to appear without fail on Wednesday, July 2, and Thursday, July 3, 2025,” the statement stressed.

PAC has also requested some oil companies to reappear before it in connection with alleged outstanding liabilities totalling $125.5m

They are OML 18 ($15.2m), Shoreline ($70m), Network Exploration ($2.6m), Aradel ($8.2m), Newcross Exploration ($25m) and Ocean ($4.5m).

The statement further quoted the Chairman of the Committee, Bamidele Salam, as saying, “Recalcitrant companies will face the constitutional consequences of their refusal to cooperate. We are fully committed to enforcing accountability and recovering all funds owed to the Nigerian people.”

The warning came as the Committee announced the recovery of an additional $15.7m (approximately ₦25bn) from several oil companies, raising the total recovered amount to ₦86.5bn.

This followed a comprehensive review of the Auditor-General’s Annual Report on the Consolidated Financial Statements for the year ended December 31, 2021.

“The Committee’s investigations revealed that oil and gas companies owe the Federation Account approximately ₦9.4 trillion as of Q4 2024, stemming from unpaid oil royalties, concession rentals, gas flare penalties, and other contractual obligations under Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs), Repayment Agreements, and Modified Carry Arrangements.

“Latest recoveries amounting to $15.7m (approximately ₦25bn) include TotalEnergies ($2m), ⁠Shoreline Natural Resources ($10m), ⁠OML 18 Resources ($3,474,123) and ⁠Enageed Resource Ltd. ($280,000)

“These funds have been remitted directly into the Federation Account and are considered a critical step in reinforcing fiscal responsibility within Nigeria’s extractive sector,” the statement further read.

Benue killings: ‘This is genocide, not a dispute’, Tor Tiv tells Tinubu

The Tor Tiv V, James Ayatse, has told President Bola Tinubu that the killings in Benue State are not clashes between herders and farmers, but a planned attack aimed at taking over land.

Speaking at a meeting with Tinubu and stakeholders in Benue yesterday, the traditional ruler said many people had misunderstood the crisis and wrongly advised Benue citizens to stay calm and live peacefully with their neighbours.

Ayatse said, “We do have grave concerns about the misinformation and misrepresentation of the security crisis in Benue State.

“Your Excellency, it’s not herders-farmers clashes, it’s not communal clashes, it’s not reprisal attacks or skirmishes.”

He described the violence as a “calculated, well-planned, full-scale genocidal invasion and land-grabbing campaign” by herder terrorists and bandits that has lasted for decades.

He added, “Wrong diagnosis will always lead to wrong treatment… We are dealing with something far more sinister than we think. It’s not about learning to live with your neighbours; it is dealing with a war.”

Yelwata: Killing of over 200 Christians in Benue shocking – Mexican Bishops

The Mexican Episcopal Conference has sent a condolence message to the people of Benue State, Nigeria, following the massacre of over 300 people on June 13 in Yelwata, Guma LGA of the state.

In a statement signed by Bishop Ramón Castro Castro, President of the Conference, and Bishop Héctor M. Pérez Villarreal, Secretary General, the Church leaders condemned the massacre, describing it as an act of “inhuman violence” that cries out to heaven.

“The Mexican Episcopal Conference expresses its deepest dismay and sorrow over the massacre perpetrated last Friday, June 13, in the state of Benue, Nigeria, where more than two hundred Christian brothers and sisters were brutally murdered while they slept, victims of armed attacks that included arson, bladed weapons, and summary executions.

“These events, marked by inhuman violence, cry out to heaven and move us as a Church to raise a burning prayer for the eternal rest of our brothers and sisters who lost their lives, for the speedy recovery of the wounded, and for the consolation of the families who have been torn apart by pain.

“We unite with our brother bishops in Nigeria and all the People of God who pilgrimage in Africa in this jubilee year of hope, to ask the Lord for the gift of peace and to strongly renew the call for an end to all war, persecution, and religious or ethnic violence that threatens the sacred dignity of every human being.

“We invite all ecclesial communities in Mexico to join in prayer, offering Eucharists and holy hours in memory of the martyrs of Benue, and as a plea for the conversion of hearts hardened by hatred.
