Military deploys 800 Special Forces to combat Nigeria’s worsening security challenges

The military is to deploy about 800 well trained special forces into operational areas to combat myriads of security challenges facing the nation.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, made this known yesterday in Abuja, at the Defence Training Conference 2025, with the theme, “Performance Oriented Training and Trends in the Contemporary Operating Environment.”

He said: “Sometime next week, we will be graduating the first 800 special forces team trained to face the challenges we are undergoing, and the training is very comprehensive. We have realised that deploying them in pieces also creates that weakness that we see. We will be deploying them together, a force that stays together that will understand each other. Because from experience, a fighting force must be able to understand themselves.’’

The CDS said the conference was organised as a critical part of shared commitment to building a professional and combat-ready force that is well equipped to navigate the evolving operational landscape.

He said the mission was aimed to create a unified training system that is adaptable, technological-driven, economical, and mission driven.

This, according to him, entails expanding joint training programmes and doctrinal reviews as well as performance simulation and work-giving among other innovations that will enhance professional operational ability.

He added that the training would enhance collaboration, cooperation, and ‘jointness’ among the services of other relevant security agencies.

He said the contemporary challenges facing Nigeria cannot be handled by one service or one agency.

He noted, “There is a need for collaboration and cooperation of all services working together. Looking at our operational operating environment, there is evidence that the threats we face are increasingly complex, asymmetrical, and technology-guided issues. These threats range from a persistent scourge of insurgency and terrorism to the rise of cyber warfare, hybrid traits, and proliferation of advanced weaponry. We are also witnessing a rapid integration of artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, advanced surveillance technology and sophisticated electronic cyber warfare.’’

Mr Musa emphasised the need for the military to understand the enemy it’s dealing with to prepare for emerging challenges.

He added, “The enemy we are dealing with is someone who has nothing to lose. He lives, he dies, his guilt goes for him. That is why we must be able to prepare our troops to understand the nature of the enemy and the threat they are facing. These threats will determine the fundamental shift on how we undertake training, ensuring that our personnel are not just prepared for yesterday’s battle but are agile and adaptive enough to thrive in a dynamic operational environment.’’

Earlier, the Chief of Defence Training, Rear Adm. Ibrahim Shettima, said the aim of the conference was to foster synergy, enhance professionalism, and align training with the ever-evolving nature of conflict.

According to him, such includes adapting to hybrid threats, embracing simulation-based training, strengthening joint units and emergency cooperation, as well as cultivating a generation of officers and men who are not just factually proficient, but internationally agile and efficiently resilient.

PDP reinstates Samuel Anyanwu as national secretary

  • His reinstatement has restored order in PDP – Amah

The Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), has restored Samuel Anyanwu to his position as its national secretary.

The acting National Chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagun, announced the decision at a press conference in Abuja yesterday.

The decision comes a day after the party’s leadership met with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the leadership crisis in the party.

At the meeting, INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, had expressed dismay that in the last couple of months, the commission received letters from the party, saying that Sunday Udeh-Okoye was secretary and thereafter changed its mind and said it was Mr Anyanwu and later Setonji Koshoedo.

Mr Damagun, who was accompanied to the press conference by the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other party leaders said the decision to readmit Mr Anyanwu into the National Working Committee (NWC) “was a difficult decision, but it was accepted by many members of the party led by the organs of the party.”

He added, “Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary, that is why I said it was a critical decision. Like INEC said, they don’t have our notice, so what we will have on June 30th is an extended Caucus.”

The chairman also said the party’s earlier scheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting had been cancelled.

“We will have an expanded Caucus. At the next Caucus, we will take a decision leading to a proper NEC,” Mr Damagum stated.

At the end of the meeting with INEC on Tuesday, Mr Damagun said the party’s leadership would meet with the larger PDP stakeholders and return to the commission on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by Mr Mohammed, Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara).

Other attendees were a former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, and former vice-presidential candidate Ben Obi.

Mr Anyanwu, an ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, had left the office without formally resigning from his position to run for the 2024 governorship election in Imo State.

He was, therefore, replaced by the South-east chapter of the PDP with Mr Udeh-Okoye, a former youth leader of the party.

Mr Anyanwu, a former senator, who lost the governorship election to the incumbent, Hope Uzodinma, approached the court for reinstatement. He lost at both the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

He challenged the judgement of the Court of Appeal at the Supreme Court, which ruled that the matter was an internal affair of the party.

2027: SDP suspends National Chairman Gabam, others

Amid a brewing crisis, the Social Democratic Party National Working Committee has suspended its national chairman, Shehu Gabam, and two other members over allegations of gross financial misconduct.

The spokesperson of the party, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, disclosed this in a statement to newsmen yesterday.

The other members suspended are Nze Nnadi Clarkson, National Auditor, and Uchechukwu Chukwuma, National Youth Leader of the party.

According to the party, the suspension of the trio takes effect immediately.

“In exercise of its exclusive powers as guaranteed in Article 19.1, 19.3(i), and 19.5 of the Party Constitution (2022 as amended), the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has approved the immediate suspension of the National Chairman of the Party, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gbam, along with two members of the National Working Committee (NWC), namely Nze Nnadi Clarkson, National Auditor, and Uchechukwu Chukwuma, National Youth Leader, over grave allegations of gross financial misconduct, embezzlement, misappropriation, and diversion of party funds.

“The decision followed a resolution of a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC), where overwhelming evidence was presented linking the suspended officials to a series of unauthorised financial transactions, personal enrichment schemes, and movement of funds from the party’s accounts without necessary approvals of the NWC,” the statement reads.

This came after it was  reported on Tuesday, that protesters pulled down SDP’s National Secretariat gate in Abuja.

Flood: Dredge the River Niger now, senate tells FG

…Urges Urgent Action on Mokwa Flood Disaster

The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government to immediately commence the dredging of the River Niger and implement long-term flood control measures to mitigate the impact of future disasters across the country.

The resolution followed the devastating flood that ravaged Mokwa town in Niger State, which left over 700 people dead, thousands displaced, and critical infrastructure destroyed.

At plenary yesterday, the Senate unanimously adopted a motion titled “Catastrophic Flood Disaster in Mokwa, Niger State: Need for Proactive Action to Forestall Future Occurrence”, sponsored by Senator Peter Jiya (PDP, Niger South) and co-sponsored by 21 other lawmakers.

In his presentation, Senator Jiya painted a grim picture of the disaster, noting that between Thursday, May 29 and Friday, May 30, 2025, torrential rains led to a catastrophic flood that swept through Mokwa, killing hundreds — including pupils of four Islamiyya schools — and causing property losses estimated at over ₦10 billion.

“Over 700 lives were lost, with only about 300 bodies recovered. Many victims remain buried under mud or were washed into the River Niger. At least 3,354 people are currently housed in IDP camps, and more than 9,500 residents were directly affected,” Jiya stated.

He also highlighted the destruction of critical infrastructure, including two collapsed bridges, uprooted rail lines, damaged roads, swept-away vehicles, and the decimation of over 50,000 hectares of farmland, which he warned would disrupt food supply across local and regional markets.

The Senate expressed concern that despite early warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) and a prior request to the Ecological Fund Office in 2023, no preventive action was taken in Mokwa and other flood-prone communities in Niger State.

“Despite prior warnings and correspondences, the necessary remedial work was not carried out,” Jiya said, blaming the delayed response for the scale of the tragedy.

In a series of resolutions, the Senate:

Urged the Federal Government to dredge the River Niger to prevent further flooding and improve water flow.

Called for a holistic investigation into the Mokwa flood and similar disasters nationwide to develop sustainable flood control infrastructure and enhance early warning systems.

Observed a minute silence in honour of the victims.

Requested immediate execution of relief packages promised during the Vice President’s visit.

Mandated resettlement of people living along active and inactive riverbanks, erosion-prone zones, and waterways.

Urged intensified distribution of relief materials, including food, medical care, temporary shelters, and clean water to flood victims.

Directed its Joint Committee on Works; Housing, Urban Resources Development; and Water Resources to visit affected communities for an on-the-spot assessment, monitor implementation of relief efforts, and report back to the Senate.

The Senate emphasized that while emergency interventions have been made by the Vice President, NEMA, Niger State Government, traditional leaders, and NGOs, the scale of the disaster far exceeds available resources.

Lawmakers stressed that scaling up response efforts is imperative to alleviate the suffering of victims and prevent future occurrences of such magnitude

NAFDAC seals shops, arrests 6 over illegal sale of bleaching creams in Kano

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested six persons and sealed several shops in SabonGari, Kano, over illegal sale of skin-bleaching creams.

Kano State Coordinator of NAFDAC, MrKasim Ibrahim, disclosed this during a press briefing yesterday in Kano.

He said the operation followed public complaints received on social media, as well as a directive from the agency’s director-general.

“Following complaints received through various social media channels and a directive from the director-general, we carried out discreet surveillance and mystery shopping on the products in question,” Ibrahim said.

He explained that the agency’s investigation uncovered six suspects involved in the distribution and unregulated use of bleaching creams.

”The products were allegedly marketed as beauty spa treatments but contained harmful and unapproved substances.

“After thorough analysis and robust discussions, we identified approximately six individuals involved in these illegal activities,” Ibrahim stated.

He said the raid conducted in collaboration with NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, led to the arrest of the suspects, profiling of their products, collection of samples for laboratory analysis, and sealing of the affected shops.

Ibrahim added that other companies found to be faking registered cosmetics or violating regulatory provisions were also sealed, pending further action.

NAFDAC further reiterated its regulatory mandate to oversee the manufacture, distribution, and sale of regulated products, including cosmetics, to safeguard public health.

“It is in fulfilment of this mandate that we took action to prevent potential public health disasters of significant magnitude. These criminal activities posed serious threats to public safety,” Ibrahim said.

He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the agency, emphasising NAFDAC’s commitment, under the leadership of Prof. MojisolaAdeyeye, to strict regulatory enforcement.”

“We encourage all Nigerians, if you see something, say something, to help prevent public health emergencies,” he said.

Ibrahim thanked the media for their support and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of Nigerians

Many feared dead as Bello Turji’s group, Zamfara guards clash

More than 100 people were reportedly killed on Monday during a violent clash between foot soldiers loyal to notorious bandit Bello Turji and members of the Zamfara Civilian Protection Guard near Cida village in Shinkafi Local Government Area.

An indigene of the area, Sa’idu Garba, told newsmen that the CPG, supported by the Borno State Civilian JTF, launched an assault on Turji’s camp to capture him dead or alive.

The mission was allegedly led by a repentant bandit, BashariMeniyo.

“They mobilised themselves under the leadership of one repentant bandit called BashariMeniyo and went straight to Turji’s camp in order to get him either dead or alive without the knowledge of the security agents,” Garba said.

“Unknown to them, Turji got information that they were coming to fight him; as such, he quickly mobilised his men, who were over 1000,” he added.

According to him, the ensuing gun battle lasted several hours.

“There was a heavy fight between the two groups which lasted for several hours without the intervention of the security agents,” he said.

Garba said over 100 of Turji’s men were killed, although the bandit leader narrowly escaped.

“Although Bello Turji narrowly escaped, over 100 of his people were killed during the gun battle,” he said.

He also confirmed the loss of over 20 CPG members, including their leader.

“BashariMeniyo, who led the civilian protection guard members, was killed along with other members of his group,” Garba said.

Expressing frustration, he lamented, “If the security agents could have come to the area when the fight was going on, Turji would have been killed.”

Another resident, Mohammed Sani, said he heard gunfire during the clash and described how his village was thrown into panic.

“I heard several gunshots when the two groups were exchanging fire yesterday,” he said. “Most of the people of my village left their houses and ran helter-skelter to avoid being killed.”

Efforts to reach the military spokesperson, Lt. Col. Suleiman Omale, were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off and he did not respond to text messages.

When contacted, the Special Assistant to Governor DaudaLawal on Media and Communications, Mustafa Kaura, confirmed the incident but could not confirm the number of casualties.

He stated, “I have to find out the actual number of the civilian protection guard members who were said to have lost their lives. I cannot say anything for now, until after the investigation.”

71-year-old Rivers traditional ruler arraigned for alleged impersonation

A Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has arraigned a 71-year-old traditional ruler, Eze Victor Prince Worluchem, on charges of impersonation and disobedience to a court order.

Worluchem was arraigned on six counts bordering on impersonating the Rebisi Stool and allegedly flouting a subsisting court order restraining him from parading himself as the EzeRebisi of Rebisi Kingdom.

The charges, filed by the Commissioner of Police, follow a petition from the Port Harcourt City Council Chief alleging Worluchem’s repeated disregard for the court’s ruling and his activities that allegedly threaten public peace.

When the matter was called before Magistrate Kingsley Briggs, the six charges were read out, including allegations that Worluchem conspired with others to impersonate a traditional ruler, presented himself as the EzeRebisi at public functions, and ignored court directives.

One of the charges (Count 1) reads in part: “That you, Eze Victor Prince Worluchem ‘m’ and others now at large, on the 5th day of February 2022 at Daura in Katsina State, and on the 8th day of November 2024 at St. Paul Cathedral and the 7th day of June 2025, printed an invitation for an event at St. Paul Anglican Church in Garrison, Port Harcourt, and conspired among yourselves to commit a felony, to wit—impersonation, an offence punishable under Section 516(A) of the Criminal Code Law of Rivers State of Nigeria 1999.”

Count 3 alleges that Worluchem presented himself as the EzeRebisi during a funeral service at St. Paul Cathedral Church, Port Harcourt on November 8, 2024, an act punishable under Section 486 of the same law.

Count 5 further accuses him of willfully disobeying a court order in Suit No. PHC/18/8/2013, which had restrained him from parading himself as the EzeEbarRebisi III of Rebisi Kingdom.

Upon hearing the charges, Worluchem pleaded not guilty to all six counts.

His counsel, U.G. Wokocha, applied for bail on self-recognition, citing the defendant’s age and status. However, Magistrate Kingsley Briggs denied the request, instead granting bail in the sum of ₦500,000 with two sureties.

The court stipulated that the sureties must be blood relatives of the defendant, individuals with a verifiable means of livelihood, not older than 55 years, and recognized members of society.

The matter was adjourned to July 21, 2025, for further hearing.

Fake drugs: Ariaria Int. Market traders set up 24-man ethics, quality control Task Force

From Henrietta Ashikodi, Umuahia

To eradicate fake, expired and substandard drugs in Ariaria International Market, in Aba, Abia State traders have established a 24-man ethics and quality control taskforce to prevent the influx of such drugs in the market

The Chairman, Ariaria International Market, Mr. Michael Aniorji disclosed this to news men in his office on Monday, said they want to enforce standard aimed at protecting unsuspecting consumers from substandard and deceptive practices.

‘Our promise and decision was that any trader found selling fake products or who is into deceitful trading practices will forfeit his or her shop and would be eased out of the market”, the chairman warned.

The chairman disclosed that the taskforce will incorporate officials of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, and Standard Organization of Nigeria, SON.

According to him, “if any customer returns a product he bought after discovering it is of low quality or not in good order, the seller can no longer say that he cannot replace it because the buyer has paid for it, any trader who does that would be made to pay through his or her nose”. The chairman stated.

He hinted that the taskforce will scrutinize all food items and drugs being brought into the market to ensure that the fake and expired products do not find their ways into the market .

“Those selling palm oil and vegetable oil are also part of the team to check deceitful trading practices in those areas.

He further hinted that traders in the market have accepted the proposal to remodel the market, stating that the traders have only seen one contractor, whom he said is yet to present papers confirming his engagement to them.

The chairman noted that he believed that the contractor is yet to start work because he has not been introduced officially to the union members of the market.

2027: I’ve no ambition, I just want to remove this evil I brought upon Nigerians – El-Rufai

A former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has said that he has no ambition to join the race for the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in an interview on Arise News, El-Rufai said that all he desires at this point is to see the administration of President Tinubu, which he described as evil and a tragedy, voted out.

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) said that he would go with whatever party the collective consensus decides is going to be the vehicle to remove Tinubu.

According to El-Rufai, Nigerians are tired of the ruling All Progressives Congress and are looking for a credible option.

“We have polled it. There is 91% disapproval of this administration across the country. 91% disapproval is the worst in Nigeria’s history,” he said.

“But Nigerians are looking for a credible option. But I want to see people coming together, putting aside their differences and ambitions, and giving them an alternative to this failure of a government. That’s the key thing.”

Asked if he can put aside his personal ambition for this cause with the likes of Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and so many other big politicians in the race.

El-Rufai noted that big names do not equate to ambitions, adding, “You’ve mentioned my name. I have no ambition.

“I just feel that having contributed to bringing about this tragedy to Nigeria by contributing to the emergence of Tinubu as president, I should contribute in my last lap, because I’m 65, I should be retiring in my last lap.

“Let me contribute towards removing this evil that I believe will destroy Nigeria if left unchecked.”

Court strikes out DSS charges against three Lagos Assembly Staff

Court

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos presided over by Justice Daniel Osiagor, yesterday, struck out the six criminal charges filed against three legislative staff of the Lagos State House of Assembly, who allegedly assaulted some operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Justice Osiagor threw out the six-count charge after it was withdrawn by the DSS lawyer, Mohammed Bajela.

The intelligence agency had arraigned the legislative staff, Ibrahim Olanrewaju, Adetu Adekunle, and Fatimoh Adetola before the court in February 17, 2025, over allegations of conspiring to assault officers of the State Security Service while performing their official duties, without any reasonable excuse.

The agency had alleged that on February 17, 2025, at the Lagos State House of Assembly, the three defendants aided and abetted each other in obstructing the officers of the State Security Service while they were carrying out their duties without just cause.

DSS further accused the defendants of cyberstalking, by recording and disseminating alleged false information on social media to cause a public breakdown of law and order.

It further alleged that the defendants conspired to commit a felony by willfully misdirecting electronic messages to social media to embarrass the State Security Service and its officials.

The DSS also claimed that the defendants used an iPhone 12 Pro Max to record false information and post it on social media for circulation, with the intent of causing embarrassment to the State Security Service and inciting a breakdown of law and order.

The offence allegedly violated Sections 516 of the Criminal Code Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, as well as sections 27(1)(b), 24(1)(b), 24(c)(i), and 11 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 (as amended), 2024.Green job opportunities

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Although the prosecutor did not give any reason for withdrawing the charges, sources with knowledge of the development disclosed that the DSS withdrew the charges following the intervention of notable figures in Lagos politics.

The source also disclosed that the defendants wrote separate letters of apology to the Director General of the SSS, promising to refrain from any future acts of criminality.

PDP Govs lead NWC to meeting with INEC

The Peoples Democratic Party PDP Governors’ Forum yesterday led the National Working Committee NWC of the party to a troubleshooting meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.

Some of the governors at the meeting include Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Caleb Mutfwang and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara).

Before the meeting went into a closed door, Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum, said they were at the Commission to engage INEC on pressing internal matters affecting the PDP, particularly those requiring the Commission’s regulatory clarification.

“We are here today to discuss and interact with you sincerely because we had NEC and there was a decision… to avoid controversy. And I have received your reply on that letter urging us to be guided by such rules,” Damagum said.

Responding, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, confirmed that the commission remains open to engagement with all registered political parties and reiterated INEC’s regulatory neutrality.

“We have received correspondences naming Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Sunday Udeh-Okoye, and Setonji Koshoedo for the same position. This situation calls for clarity,” Yakubu said, referring to the inconsistencies in PDP’s communication with INEC.

Yakubu also reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to its statutory responsibilities, stating, “our role is to ensure that the rules are followed.”

$4.5bn fraud trial: Emefiele seeks forensic exam of WhatsApp evidence

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, yesterday, adjourned ruling on an application filed by the embattled former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, seeking a forensic examination of WhatsApp messages admitted in evidence in his ongoing trial.

Emefiele, through his counsel, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, had prayed the court for leave to engage a forensic expert to examine both the mobile phone described as an “iPhone 2” and the printed WhatsApp conversations extracted from it, which were tendered by the prosecution as evidence.

“My Lord, we are requesting permission to conduct a forensic analysis of the mobile device and the messages extracted therefrom in order to verify their authenticity and integrity.

“It is a critical element of our defence,” Ojo submitted.

However, EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Chinenye Okezie, objected to the request, arguing that the defence had failed to meet the procedural requirements for such an application.

“The defence has not disclosed the name of the proposed forensic laboratory, nor the qualifications or experience of the personnel who would conduct the examination,” Okezie told the court.

“The defendant has not stated the duration of the forensic exercise,” Okezie said.

She argued that, under the rules of evidence and practice, once an exhibit has been admitted by the court, it becomes the property of the court until the conclusion of the trial.

“My Lord, the documents and the device must remain in the form they were presented to the court.

“We urge the court to direct the Director of the Forensic Department of the Commission to nominate a certified forensic laboratory if the application is to be granted,” Okezie added.

She also stated that there must be a proper chain of custody to ensure the device isn’t tampered with and it is returned to the court upon conclusion of the exercise.

“Any examination should be conducted in the presence of a qualified expert to be nominated by the prosecution.

“This is to prevent any tampering and to guarantee the integrity of the process,” Okezie added.

Emefiele is standing trial alongside his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, on a 19-count charge bordering on alleged conspiracy, money laundering, and fraud amounting to $4.5 bn and N2.8 bn.

The charges were brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

After listening to the arguments of both counsels, Justice Oshodi adjourned the ruling on the application until September 15, 2025.

Clear confusion over status of your National Secretary – INEC tells PDP

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,  Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has urged the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to clear the confusion surrounding its National Secretary position.

Yakubu made the call during a closed door meeting with the National Working Committee, NWC, and stakeholders of the party in Abuja yesterday.

The main opposition party had, according to the INEC boss, requested to interact with the Commission to rectify its leadership crisis.

It was reported that not long ago INEC received visitors from the Labour Party with similar request.

Speaking earlier at the meeting with INEC, Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Iliya Umar Damagun, said the purpose of the parley was to discuss the status of the party’s National Secretary, particularly regarding the letter sent to the party by INEC on the request for the Commission to monitor the 100th NEC meeting.

Yakubu observed that the letter was only signed by the party chairman, and not the chairman and secretary, as provided in INEC regulations and guidelines.

“So there are issues to discuss and we look forward to this important clarification from the party as to who is the Secretary. In the last couple of months we received letters from the party saying that one MrUdeOkoye was the Secretary,” he said.

“Thereafter, the party changed its mind and said it was Anyanwu. Thereafter, the party changed its mind to say that it’s MrOkoye and again the party changed its mind to say it’s Anyanwu. And the last letter from the party actually has no Secretary at all.”

Damagun said, “Normally when we have issues, the party always comes and interacts with INEC, but today you’ve given us the opportunity with our leaders from various organs of the party to be here.

“We’re here today as you are aware we have issues pertaining the status of our National Secretary.

“We’ve gone into litigation I think from the beginning of last year until when the Supreme Court, you know, made a pronouncement of which INEC was a party. We’re here today to discuss and interact with you sincerely because we had NEC and there was a decision of NEC which mandated me to sign a letter to avoid controversy. And I received your reply on that letter.

2027: Why ADA can’t be registered now – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday declared that the proposed political party, All Democratic Alliance, ADA, can’t be registered at the moment because it is yet to meet requirement.

Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Informawtion and Voter Education Committee, made the disclosure while speaking with journalists in Abuja.

According to him, there are several letters of intent before the Commission but none has met requirements to proceed for formal registration application.

“The truth is that we have so many letters of intent presently and none of them is an application yet. They must first meet the criteria before submitting a letter of intent,” Olumekun said.

It was learnt that ADA proponents omitted the word ‘electoral’ from the letter they addressed to the INEC chairman.

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Board (CDCFIB) has called on qualified candidates to apply for full-time employment into the various paramilitary agencies from Thursday.

This is contained in a statement by the Secretary to the board, retired Maj.-Gen. Abdulmalik Jubril, yesterday in Abuja.

He urged applicants interested in being employed into the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and the Federal Fire Service to apply online through the board’s portal: https://recruitment.cdcfib.org.

Chrisland: Autopsy confirms electrocution as cause of Whitney Adeniran’s death

A government pathologist has confirmed that 12-year-old Whitney Adeniran, a student of Chrisland Schools, died as a result of electrocution, not natural causes, shedding new light on the controversial case that ignited national outrage.

At the resumed coroner’s inquest on Friday at the Ikeja Magistrate Court (Suit No. MCIK/CONA/1/2023), Dr. Sanni Ayodele Daniel, a certified pathologist, presented the autopsy report, stating that Whitney died from asphyxia caused by electrocution.

He ruled out any pre-existing health issues or drug-related causes.

“The cause of death is consistent with electrocution,” Dr. Daniel told the court, listing several telltale physiological signs such as cerebral oedema, subpleural petechial hemorrhages, electric burn injury on the right knee, evidence of shock in the kidneys, marked fluidity of blood, bilateral conjunctival petechiae, and a grazed abrasion on the right forearm.

These indicators, he said, left no doubt that the child suffered a fatal electric shock.

Whitney slumped on February 9, 2023, during Chrisland School’s inter-house sports event at Agege Stadium, sparking an investigation after her parents raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding her death.

Representing the deceased’s family at the hearing were counsels Oluwatodimu Ige, Obiechina Justin, and Oluwabusayomi Gbadegesin. The Lagos State Attorney General’s Office was represented by Araba, Esq., while Abimbola Ojenike and Oluwadamilola Omotosho, Esq. appeared for the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

However, neither representatives of Chrisland Schools nor Ademoye Adewale—the vendor allegedly linked to the fatal incident- were present in court, despite being formally served hearing notices. Their absence drew criticism from lawyers and members of the public in attendance.

The presiding magistrate adjourned the case to August 8, 2025, for continuation of cross-examination.

The case has reignited public calls for stronger safety protocols in schools and has put pressure on regulators to ensure accountability and prevent future tragedies.

Harassment of journalist: Call your aide to order – Ogun NUJ tells Gov Abiodun

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, has urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to call his Special Assistant on Students Affairs, Azeez Adeyemi, to order and ensure that measures are put in place to safeguard the rights and safety of journalists in the state.

The Council, in a statement by its Chairman, Wale Olarenwaju, and signed by its Secretary, Bunmi Adigun, yesterday condemned the harassment of its member by the special assistant, warning it will not tolerate any move that will prevent its members from discharging their statutory responsibilities under any guise in the state.

it had reported that Toheeb Olajide Osoba, the publisher of Newsangle, was allegedly harassed and beaten on the directive of the special assistant during the celebration held at the June 12 Cultural Center in Abeokuta.

Following the incident, the NUJ Ogun Council ordered a temporary blacklist on the coverage of activities of students in the state, pending the outcome of its ongoing investigation alongside with that of the police.

However, the Council disclosed that the special assistant, Adeyemi, had resorted to using his office to harass the journalist and had written two petitions where he called Olajide Osoba a member of a dreaded cult group.

The statement reads:

“Rising from it’s emergency State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting, the Union condemns the unwarranted threats, assasination of character, verbal abuse, and reprehensible behaviour towards a journalist by Mr. Azeez Adeyemi and a group of individuals believed to be members and affiliates of his own dreaded faction of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

“ This utterly unacceptable act began from the 2025 May 1st celebration which our Union, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), an affiliate Union of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) actively participated with her members. Comrade Osoba, a bonafide member of the NUJ, was in attendance but later harassed, mercilessly beaten and seriously wounded, allegedly, on the directive of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Comrade Azeez Adeyemi, while coming out of the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, without a cause.

“ This unfortunate case, Comrade Osoba, incidented at the Ibara Divisional Police Station, Ibara, Abeokuta. Following his invitation for inquiry by the police from Ibara Divisional Police Station, the S.A has left no stone unturned in his intentional attempt to harass, intimidate and coerce Olajide Osoba, as he embarked on retaliatory moves by writing two frivolous petitions in which he directly called Olajide Osoba a member of a dreaded cult group, and asked the police to hunt and arrest the journalist using his office as Special Assistant to Governor as basis for this oppression.

“ Last week only, police officers from the State Headquarters, Eleweran, came to arrest Osoba, waiting on him from morning till night so as to be whisked away even without prior invitation. In the same vein, officers from the Abeokuta division of the office of the AIG, Zone 2, Lagos, came with another letter of invitation while Adeyemi’s boys also continually laid siege for Osoba at the Iwe Iroyin Press Centre.

“ This utterly uncivilized behaviour from the Special Assistant cannot be tolerated in a democratic society, granted that any form of assault on a journalist is an affront to the fundamental principles of press freedom and the right of citizens to access accurate and unbiased information. The press must remain free, unshackled, and empowered to fulfill its vital role in society.

“ It is deeply concerning that an individual entrusted with the responsibility of upholding law and order would resort to using excessive force and intimidation against journalists. Such actions not only undermine the integrity of the media but also erode the trust between the government and the people it serves.

Consequently, we resolve as follows:

That Mr. Azeez Adeyemi, his faction of the NANS members, and their accomplices are forthwith banned and declared persona non grata within and around our Secretariat, Iwe Iroyin Press House, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta.

“ That police and thugs harassment and intimidation of our members (journalists) orchestrated by the Special Assistant to the Governor of Ogun State, Mr Azeez Adeyemi, and people alike should immediately stop while proper investigation should be launched into the matter, starting from 2025 May Day celebration brutal incident.

“ We shall not tolerate or accept any move that will gag our members and prevent them from discharging their statutory responsibilities under any guise in Ogun State.”

The strikes drew mixed international reactions, highlighting a deepening global divide over how to manage the growing crisis.

Starmer said Washington’s actions were aimed at averting that threat and called on Tehran to return to diplomatic negotiations.

Echoing this stance, UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy urged Iran to “show restraint” and re-engage in talks.

According to Al Jazeera, The European Union’s foreign policy,Chief KajaKallas, has called for de-escalation and a return to negotiations.

“I urge all sides to step back, return to the negotiating table, and prevent further escalation,” Kallas wrote on X, adding Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and that EU foreign ministers will discuss the situation on Monday.

Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba also stressed “We are closely monitoring the situation there with grave concern,” he said.

According to Xinhua, China’s foreign ministry criticised the bombings as a “violation of the UN Charter and international law,” claiming the actions had worsened regional instability.

Explosions have been heard over Doha after Iran launched a missile attack on a US base in Qatar.

Qatar has confirmed the attack on the US-run Al Udeid base, calling it a “flagrant violation.”

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has also officially confirmed the development.

According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, the retaliatory operation is called “Annunciation of Victory.”

FG has no credible evidence against Kanu after four years, says IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra has said that despite over four years of trial and multiple amended charges, the Federal Government has failed to present any credible or admissible evidence directly linking the pro-Biafran leader, MaziNnamdiKanu, to any act of terrorism, incitement, or violence.

In a press statement released yesterday, the IPOB’s Directorate of Legal Affairs, Research and Global Communications, OnyekachiIfedi, stated that it has become necessary to address the ongoing misinformation, politically motivated media headlines, and deliberate distortions of facts regarding the ongoing trial of Kanu.

Ifedi, however, urged the public, media houses, and civil society groups to rely on verified legal facts and not propaganda, insisting that no case has been made against Kanu.

He called on the Federal Government to stop persecuting Kanu on the basis of “outdated laws” and “prejudicial narratives”, adding that all charges against Kanu were legally incompetent.

According to him, the Federal Government is prosecuting Kanu on the basis of outdated laws, adding that the FG should respect due process and fundamental rights and stop persecuting their leader on the basis of outdated laws and prejudicial narratives and propaganda war.

The statement said, “The Directorate of Legal Affairs and Global Communications issues this public statement to address ongoing misinformation, politically motivated headlines, and deliberate distortions regarding the ongoing trial of MaziNnamdiKanu. We urge the public, media houses, and civil society to rely on verified legal facts, not propaganda.

“Despite over four years of trial and multiple amended charges, the Federal Government has failed to present any credible or admissible evidence directly linking MaziNnamdiKanu to any act of terrorism, incitement, or violence.

“No named victims. No forensic or material evidence. No direct testimony by alleged security victims or affected civilians. All charges were filed under laws repealed in 2022. Nigeria’s Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2013 is no longer in force.

“The charge that Kanu imported a transmitter in 2015 to promote terrorism is legally incompetent. No proof of concealment. No customs or regulatory documentation presented. The applicable law(CEMA) was repealed in 2023. The Court’s amendment of the charge from ‘criminal code’ to CEMA was never properly endorsed on the charge sheet — a fatal procedural error.”

The group, therefore, insisted that it is not an “unlawful” society, adding that the Federal Government’s subsequent proscription of IPOB was obtained ex parte — without notifying or hearing from IPOB and this violates the Nigerian Constitution and international law.

“In a landmark judgment on March 1, 2017, Justice BintaNyako of the Federal High Court ruled — in a contested hearing with both parties present — that IPOB is not an unlawful society. That ruling stands unchallenged to this day.

“Efforts to link Kanu or IPOB to the #EndSARS protests are false and defamatory. The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry clearly indicted Nigerian security forces, not IPOB, for the violence and killings associated with #EndSARS.

“Kanu was abducted in Kenya and brought to Nigeria without any extradition hearing. This act of extraordinary rendition is illegal under Nigerian law, the African Charter, and international norms. The Supreme Court of Nigeria has long held that such conduct can void prosecution,” the statement added.

The group, therefore, called for the upholding of the constitutional imperative that “justice must not only be done, but be seen to be done”, while urging journalists, human rights defenders, and the international community to scrutinise this case and advocate for justice grounded in truth and the rule of law.

June 12: Anenih’s son slams Presidency, defends father’s legacy

OseAnenih, son of the late elder statesman and former chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Tony Anenih, has rejected recent claims by the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, BayoOnanuga, over his father’s role in the June 12 saga.

In a statement on X (Formerly Twitter) yesterday titled “REBUTTAL: IN DEFENCE OF HISTORY AND MY FATHER,” Anenih described Onanuga’s portrayal of Anenih as “untrue” and accused him of distorting historical facts in an official presidential communication.

“Dear Bayo, your account of my father’s involvement in June 12 is, to put it politely, untrue.

“It is disappointing that you chose to use uncouth language to describe Chief Tony Anenih, and in an official communication from ‘the Presidency,’ no less,” Ose said.

Onanuga had, in response to former Jigawa State Governor SuleLamido’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s role in the June 12 struggle, accused both Lamido and Anenih of aligning with the military and the then-opposition NRC to sabotage the mandate of the presumed winner of the 1993 presidential election, MoshoodAbiola.

But Ose said Onanuga’s take ignored the facts, noting that his father was among those who stood up to Abiola after the election annulment.

He said, ”Chief Abiola initially fled the country after the annulment of the June 12 presidential elections by Gen. Babangida.

“When he did return, one of his first visits was to my father, then National Chairman of the SDP, in Benin City.”

He said, “True to form, my father confronted Abiola. He accused him, to his face, of abandoning the party and its supporters in the immediate aftermath of the annulment while they risked life and limb defending his mandate.

“Abiola’s public response? ‘A bird does not tell his friends that the stone is coming.’”

Anenih son added that his father warned Abiola against trusting the military, especially General SaniAbacha, noting that Abiola’s alliance with the junta would prove costly.

“My father also told me of another conversation, one in which he warned Abiola that his increasingly close dealings with General Abacha would ultimately destroy his chances of reclaiming his mandate,” he said.

Quoting Abiola’s response, Ose stated, ”Whether you go by plane or by car, what matters is that you get to Kano.”

He added, ”The ING, to Abiola, was a road trip. Abacha’s military coup, which Abiola publicly encouraged, he regarded as a private jet.”

OseAnenih said it was ironic that Abiola was among the first to congratulate Abacha after the coup that toppled the Interim National Government, an arrangement both SDP and NRC had negotiated with the understanding that power would be transferred to Abiola.

He added, ”I am not aware of any animosity that ever existed between my father and President Tinubu.

“In fact, my father acknowledged that Tinubu had initially spoken out against the delay in announcing the results of the June 12 election. It was the only time he mentioned Tinubu in his 260-page book.”

While clarifying his stance, Anenih offered to give Onanuga a copy of the late Anenih’s memoir to assist his understanding of that era.

“I am happy to send you a copy of my father’s memoir, ‘My Life and Nigerian Politics’, to help you avoid this sort of ahistorical misadventure in future.”

Expressing disappointment that the statement was issued in the President’s name, Ose added, “It is however unfortunate that I have had to defend my father’s name against a lie, and doubly unfortunate that that lie was issued in the name of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He concluded by questioning the relevance of revisiting a decades-old narrative amid current national challenges.

“I’m just surprised, and slightly disappointed, that so much energy is going into the re-telling of a tale that is more than 30 years old.

“Of what relevance to the average Nigerian is any of this, today?”

NSA links insecurity to hunger, poverty

The National Security Adviser, NuhuRibadu, has identified hunger and poverty as major drivers of insecurity across Nigeria, stressing that tackling them is essential to achieving lasting peace and development.

Ribadu spoke yesterday at the National Security Seminar themed “Combating Hunger and Poverty for Sustainable Peace and Development in Nigeria,” organised by the Alumni Association of the National Defence College in Abuja.

Represented by the Director of Defence Affairs at the Office of the NSA, Major General Peter Mala, Ribadu said, “Hunger and poverty are not merely social concerns; they are catalysts for insecurity, crime, violence, and social disintegration.

“These issues form a vicious cycle — poverty leads to insecurity, and insecurity, in turn, deepens poverty.”

He noted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has prioritised agricultural reforms, social investment programmes, and security sector interventions aimed at breaking the cycle.

These, he said, include support for food security initiatives, enhanced law enforcement, and infrastructure development to boost agricultural production and distribution.

Ribadu added that the Office of the NSA continues to coordinate both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches involving the military, intelligence services, security agencies, and civil actors to confront the security crisis.

“Despite progress, challenges like unemployment, hunger, and youth disenfranchisement persist and require deeper, long-term solutions,” he said.

He called for coordinated, inclusive, and forward-thinking responses.

Echoing Ribadu’s warning, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, said hunger and poverty have evolved from social concerns into full-blown national security threats.

Represented by the Chief of Defence Training, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shetimma, Musa called for a national approach to addressing their impact on internal security.

He said, “Insecurity today is not only defined by weapons but also by economic deprivation, food insecurity, and social dislocation.

“The North Central region, particularly Benue State, once known as Nigeria’s food basket, has been devastated by banditry, displacement, and farmer-herder conflicts.”

He warned that the disruption of farming activities, illegal occupation of farmlands, and rural-urban migration are fueling food inflation, mass displacement, and national instability.

The CDS urged urgent investment in grassroots agriculture, including enhanced access to credit, infrastructure, and market opportunities, to reposition farming as a respected and profitable profession.

“With the migration of rural youths to urban centres, agricultural productivity is declining.

“We must make farming attractive again—not as a last resort, but as a national duty and a prestigious calling,” he said.

In his remarks, the Minister of Defence, AlhajiMuhammedBadaru, advocated a human-focused approach to security by tackling causes such as poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion.

He called for a “whole-of-society” strategy to confront Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

“In a world where security threats know no borders, collective action is needed,” he said, praising the bravery and innovation of Nigeria’s Armed Forces in the face of persistent threats.

The minister lauded Tinubu’s commitment to improving citizens’ welfare and described the seminar as a vital platform for dialogue and inclusive national security solutions.

Also speaking, the President of AANDEC, Air Commodore Darlington Abdullahi (retd), described hunger and poverty as strategic threats to national stability.

He stressed the need for sustained investments in education, economic empowerment, and social inclusion as non-military tools for tackling insecurity.

Quoting the adage, “The children of the poor you fail to train will never let your children have peace,” he warned that neglecting the socio-economic needs of the population opens the door to instability and extremism.

“When millions suffer from hunger and poverty, they become vulnerable to exploitation by those with ill intentions.

“We must invest in our people, especially in education, livelihoods, and skills development,” he said.

Abdullahi proposed the establishment of a vocational and leadership development centre for widows and children of fallen heroes, describing it as a way to empower vulnerable communities and support national healing.

NNPCL increases fuel price

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, has increased its premium motor spirit price.

Our correspondent who went round NNPCL retail outlets in Abuja yesterday gathered that the state-owned oil firm has jerked up the fuel pump price to N945 per litre from N895.

This was the case in NNPCL filling stations along Kubwa Expressway, Wuse Zone 6 (Berger), Zone 4, Airport Road, Lugbe, and across its locations in Abuja.

This showed that NNPCL increased its petrol pump price by N50 per litre.

A motorist, Benjamin Chukwu, said the hike would directly impact the cost of transportation and worsen the country’s inflationary pressures.

“I discovered they increased their pump price on Sunday evening to N945 per litre. Others like MRS also did this weekend. Certainly this will impact transportation fare,” he told our reporter.

Earlier, it was reported that MRS filling stations, a retail partner with Dangote Refinery, announced a new price template for petrol between N925 and N945 per litre in Lagos and Abuja.

The development came after Dangote Refinery increased its ex-depot price of petrol to N880 per litre from N825 on Friday last week.

It would be recalled that global oil prices had been on the rise following the escalation of war between Israel and Iran in the past two weeks.

On Monday, Brent and West Texas Intermediate rose by nearly three per cent upon the United States bombing of three Iran nuclear sites at the weekend.

NDLEA arrests 300-level female student over alleged selling of illicit drugs in Edo

A 28-year-old 300-level student of Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma, Miss Esther Abumere, has been arrested by the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for allegedly selling illicit drugs.

The reports said that State Commander of the agency, Mitchell Ofoyefu, disclosed this yesterday at a press briefing as part of activities in commemoration of the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Benin City.

Ofoyeju said the student was arrested on June 19, 2025, at a supermarket in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, where assorted drugs were being sold.

He added that the suspect who hailed from Uromi in Esan North-East Local Government Area said she ventured into selling illicit drugs to offset the loan collected from a microfinance bank.

He said the supermarket has been sealed off, which he noted is a positive development in a university environment with a teeming youth population.

The state NDLEA commander opined that the arrest of the 300-level female student is a strong warning to drug barons, notwithstanding the disguise, assuring that they would be smoked out.

He listed the drugs recovered from the supermarket to include Colorado, Canadian loud, tramadol, swinol, rohyphnol and molly.

In an interview, the suspect said she was arrested at about 5:00 pm inside the supermarket by the operatives of the agency.

Ofoyefu, however, called for the collaboration of members of the public in the fight against trafficking in illicit drugs by providing credible information on drug-related activities to the agency.

He commended the efforts of the personnel of the command for their commitment and bravery for the achievements so far recorded.

VDM, schoolchildren protest in front of Wike’s house

Popular social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, has staged a protest at the entrance of the residence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, NyesomWike, in Abuja.

The protest followedWike’s announcement of plans to withhold 10 per cent of the statutory allocation to area councils due to their failure to implement the new minimum wage for primary school teachers, an issue which has led to an ongoing strike.

Yesterday, however, VDM gathered school children dressed in uniforms and conducted a class in which he taught them the letters of the alphabet.

“S for Suegbe, T for Tinubu, W for Wike,” VDM called out, while the children repeated.

According to him, Wike’s gate would henceforth serve as the pupils’ new classroom.
