Tinubu targets seven million youths for digital literacy in two years

President Bola Tinubu stated that his administration is poised to equip seven million young Nigerians with digital and professional skills, aiming to create millions of job opportunities over the next two years.

Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said this yesterday in Abuja at the Strategic Youth Leadership Conference 2025.

The conference, organized by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the National Defence College, aimed to equip young Nigerians with the strategic thinking and leadership tools to become proactive agents of national development.

The President said that his administration was poised to position Nigerians as global talent in digital literacy and ensure effective youth participation in the global digital economy.

He outlined key strategies for youth development under the renewable agenda, including the Nigerian Youth Academy and the National Learning Platform.

“At this point, let me mention the plan of our administration and our intent to put a pathway for our new development under the Nigerian Youth Academy.

“This national learning platform is targeted for seven million young Nigerians with digital and vocational skills and aim to create doors of the millions of opportunity for the young people by 2027,” he said.

According to him, there are three entities: a three-million technical talent programme that focuses on advancing digital skills, such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and software engineering.

“The administration aims to achieve 70 per cent national digital literacy by 2027 to ensure effective youth participation in the global digital economy.

“We have a labour, employment and employment programme, which targets 2.5 million jobs through enterprise trainings and employment matches,’’ he said.

Tinubu emphasised the importance of creating the right environment for youth to gain mentorship, quality education, economic empowerment, and inclusive governance.

According to him, the administration believes in a Nigeria where every young person has the opportunity to lead and contribute to national development.

“The future of Nigeria is in the hands and minds of our young people today. The energy, creativity, and courage of our youth are our nation’s greatest assets.

“However, energy without direction and potential without preparation can lead to frustration.

“That is why this conference is so timely and apt, it is about developing strategies, inducing sustainable leadership.

“It’s also about building the values of service, accountability, innovation and national building in the next generation,” he said.

He stated that the Federal Government’s student loan scheme initiative aimed to reduce non-school activities, focusing on education and career development.

He noted that the Nigerian Youth Fellowship and the U.S. initiative aim to develop youth leaders in all 774 local government areas to strengthen primary health and public health awareness.

He said that the Federal Government’s youth agricultural scheme has empowered over 100,000 youths to become entrepreneurs, ensuring food security and achieving rural development goals.

Tinubu said that the country was at a unique juncture in its national journey, and there was a need to continue shaping the character of the youth.

The Minister of Youth Development remarked that the conference was a critical event aimed at shaping the future of Nigerian youth, with over 70 percent of the population falling within the youth age bracket.

Olwande, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mohammed Abdullahi, emphasised the importance of youth leadership, stating that the nation’s wealth lay in its vibrant youth, not in natural resources such as oil or gas.

He emphasized the importance of the conference in shaping the next generation of strategic leaders for Nigeria and the African continent.

According to him, the conference is viewed as an opportunity for young leaders to engage, learn, and develop strategies to effectively lead the nation.

He noted that the collaboration between the ministry and the National Defence College presented a strategic decision to foster these values among participants.

He urged everyone to make the conference a significant event in their efforts to build a better future for the nation.

The Commandant, National Defence College, Rear Adm. James Okosun, described the conference as a deliberate national investment aligned with the President’s renewable agenda, focusing on youth development and national transformation.

He said that the theme of the conference: “Youth and Leadership: Building the Foundation for Sustainable, Strategic Leadership,” was timely and importance.

He noted that the conference aimed to equip young Nigerians with strategic thinking and leadership tools to become proactive agents of national security.

Okosun said that the vision for Nigeria was one led by young men and women who understood the dignity of leadership and the value of service.

2027: APGA considers alliance, may not field Presidential candidate – Chairman

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has hinted that it may not present a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections, suggesting instead that the party could align with “progressives who share its ideology.”

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja yesterday, APGA National Chairman Mr. Sly Ezeokenwa, explained that the decision would be taken by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) at the appropriate time, but stressed that fielding a candidate was not mandatory.

“APGA is the foremost progressive party in Nigeria. When the time comes, our NEC will decide whether to present a candidate for president in 2027 or to align with other progressive forces who share our ideals,” he said.

The chairman defended APGA’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing it as consistent with the party’s tradition of forging alliances with ruling parties at the center.

He recalled that APGA backed former President Goodluck Jonathan in both 2011 and 2015, even when the party had the option of presenting its own candidates.

“We don’t owe any apology for supporting Mr. President’s economic reforms,” he stated. “Our goal has always been to advance progressive governance and ensure policies that leave no one behind.”

He further noted that APGA remains focused on consolidating its dominance in Anambra State, where it has held power for nearly two decades, and expressed confidence that Governor Charles Soludo would be re-elected in 2026.

On the recent by-elections in Anambra, the chairman praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for conducting what he called “one of the most transparent and credible elections in recent history,” while urging that those involved in isolated cases of violence and electoral malpractice be prosecuted.

” We want to counter the persistent falsehood, deliberate misinformation and baseless allegations” being spread by the APC governorship candidate in Anambra, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, and the party’s senatorial candidate, Hon. Azuka Okosa.

“Despite the infamous role he played in attempting to subvert the will of the people at the said election, Mr. Ukachukwu has volunteered himself as the chief purveyor of falsehood, all in a bid to discredit the excellent work of INEC officials and security agencies,” the chairman declared.

He alleged that both APC candidates sponsored violence, abducted electoral officials, and attempted to falsify results in some polling units. According to him, “what we had on that day were just very isolated incidents in Orifite Ward 3, Osumeni Ward, and three wards in Ezinifite. Statistically, 98 percent of the polling units in the election were very credible.”

The APGA chairman recounted specific incidents, including the alleged abduction of INEC officials in Orifite and the diversion of election materials to private residences. He said, “hostage-taking, bribery, death threats, and assaults are not minor infractions. They are direct attacks on the very foundation of our democracy, and they must attract the full weight of the law.”

On the implications of the by-election ahead of the November 8 Anambra governorship election, the APGA leader insisted that the people of Anambra have reaffirmed their trust in the party.

“Ndiana Mbraha has rejected Hon. Ukachukwu’s politics of blood, fear and inducement. Once again, they have chosen APGA, their party, their heritage and their future,” he said.

He however called on INEC and security agencies to investigate and prosecute all electoral infractions committed during the by-election to serve as a deterrent.

Abia deputy speaker clarifies fatal convoy crash

The Office of the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Austin Meregini, has provided an official clarification regarding the death of two men in an accident involving his convoy at Obehie, Ukwa West LGA, on Sunday, August 3, 2025, along the Port Harcourt–Aba Expressway.

The explanation followed a viral video that described the Deputy Speaker’s response to the bereaved family as “sad.”

The victims, identified as Ifeanyi Maduako, 45, residing in the Philippines, and Onyedi Obasi, 35, living in Gambia, were both from Ehime Mbano, Imo State. They were reportedly returning to their bases after their mother’s burial.

In a statement issued Wednesday by Grant Okeigbo of the Deputy Speaker’s Media Unit, the office clarified that the Deputy Speaker was not in the pick-up truck at the time of the accident. The vehicle, carrying the driver and two security personnel, collided with a Toyota Spider carrying the two victims.

“The Toyota Spider was reportedly driving against traffic due to the poor condition of the opposite lane. Eyewitnesses and the surviving truck driver indicated that the Spider either suffered a burst tire or brake failure, causing it to veer into the path of the pick-up truck,” the statement said.

The accident tragically claimed the lives of the two men in the Spider, while the truck driver and two policemen sustained serious injuries. The truck driver remains on life support and may require spinal surgery at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.

The statement emphasised that the Deputy Speaker sent emissaries to the bereaved family the day after the accident and has been working with medical professionals to save the lives of his surviving aides. Discussions on how best to support the family are ongoing.

“The Deputy Speaker is pained by the circulation of unverified reports on social media regarding this tragedy. He appeals to the public and media to exercise caution in reporting such sensitive matters,” the release said.

The Deputy Speaker also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, praying for the repose of their souls.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, were unsuccessful.

Wild jubilation among Imo workers, as Uzodimma increases minimum wage to N104,000

…Orders clearance of  N16bn gratuity arrears

Workers in Imo State erupted in celebration on Tuesday night, as Governor Hope Uzodimma raised the state’s minimum wage from the nationally approved N70,000 to N104,000 monthly.

Health workers also recorded significant gains, with the entry-level salary for medical doctors now pegged at N508,000 monthly, while other health workers will start at N108,000.

The announcement, made during a meeting with organisedlabour at Government House, Owerri, was greeted with choruses of praise from jubilant workers, calling on God to bless the governor.

Aged pensioners, led by their Chairman, Dr J.B. Ugochukwu, joined in the celebration after Governor Uzodimma ordered the immediate release of N16 billion to clear outstanding gratuity arrears across the state.

Many of the pensioners had already benefited from previous gratuity payments alongside regular pension disbursements.

In announcing the pay rise, Governor Uzodimma stated that the new wage reflects his administration’s commitment to a cordial and productive relationship with the state’s workforce and pensioners.

“We have always recognised that no government can succeed without a friendly and cordial relationship with organisedlabour, which we rightly describe as the engine room of government,” the governor noted.

He added that his administration has prioritised the welfare and dignity of Imo workers, by ensuring that bureaucrats are carried along in governance.

Acknowledging the current economic challenges faced by Nigerians, following fuel subsidy removal, Governor Uzodimma cited improved state finances, with Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) rising from less than N400 million in 2020, to nearly N4 billion today. Federal allocation, he said, also grew from N7.5 billion in 2020, to over N13 billion.

He attributed the improved figures to the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which he said, are already yielding tangible benefits.

The governor also highlighted a significant drop in Imo State’s debt profile, from N280 billion to under N100 billion, alongside massive investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and youth empowerment.

Governor Uzodimma announced that under the revised salary structure, the entry-level salary for medical doctors has been set at N508,000, while senior positions in the same cadre will earn up to N1.2 million. Similarly, other health workers will start at N108,000, with top earners receiving as much as N803,000, up from the previous N77,600–N502,000 range.

Other civil service positions also received significant increases according to their respective salary structures.

The governor, however, issued a challenge to workers:

“If the government is paying you, then you must work for the government. We expect a level of dignity and commitment in your service that is uncommon. Those of us making sacrifices must also have reasons to say we did the will of God,” Uzodimma declared.

Commissioner for Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Prof. Boniface Nwogu, lauded the governor’s gesture, saying it has resolved all pending agitation and struggle by organisedlabour.

Labour leaders could not contain their excitement, bursting into solidarity songs in appreciation of the gesture.

In their responses, Imo State NLC Chairman, Comrade UcheChigaemzu, and leaders of sister unions – TUC, NUP, and NMA – thanked Governor Uzodimma for his magnanimity and pledged the continued loyalty and support of workers and pensioners in the state.

The event was attended by Deputy Governor Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. ChikeOlemgbe, the Deputy Speaker, other lawmakers, commissioners, members of the Expanded Executive Council, and Local Government Council leadership.

Fuel subsidy removal freed resources for national development – Minister

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has said that the removal of the fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s administration freed resources for national development.

The minister said this during the “Tinubu Administration Mid-Term Sensitisation Campaign” in Minna yesterday.

Idris, who was represented by Dr Asabe Sule-Garba, Head of the Federal Information Resource Centre, Minna, said the removal of the fuel subsidy allowed the current administration to redirect funds to critical projects, social services and economic stability initiatives.

The reports had it that the campaign highlighted the significant progress made in various sectors of the economy since the removal of the fuel subsidy in May 2023.

The minister said the reforms being implemented by the Tinubu administration were aimed at creating a more stable, fair and prosperous Nigeria.

“These reforms are built on the foundation of the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at creating a more stable, fair and prosperous Nigeria.

“These tough but necessary decisions have freed up national resources for infrastructure, education, healthcare and job creation,” he said.

Idris said that the essence of the campaign was to emphasise the importance of the citizens’ engagement in government policies and programmes.

He said the citizens could only hold leaders accountable when they stayed informed about government policies and programmes.

He reiterated the need to ensure peace and prosperity in the North Central region and urged the citizens to spread the government policies and programmes to families, neighbours and communities.

Mr Eyitayo Aluko, Federal Controller of Works in Niger, said the Federal Ministry of Works had carried out landmark achievements in Niger, including the construction of the Minna-Zungeru-Tegina road, the Tegina-Kontagora road, and the dualisation of the Ilorin-Jebba-Mokwa road.

Aluko, represented by Mr Felix Thomas, Assistant Chief Engineer in the ministry in Niger, said the projects were aimed at improving the state infrastructure and facilitating the movement of goods and services from the north to the southern part of the country.

Also, Malam Suleiman Ladan, State Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, said the ministry built irrigation facilities, trade structures, and research interventions, among others, in Niger.

Ladan said the projects were aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and creating jobs for Nigerians, adding that the ministry also distributed emergency relief materials to IDP camps and farmers in Niger.

“We distributed 6,000 bags of rice in Niger State. Out of the 6,000 bags of rice, 1,200 bags went to federal civil servants, while 4,800 bags were for the state civil servants and private sector workers,” he said.

The reports also disclosed that participants at the sensitisation campaign include market women, artisans, NGOs and people living with disabilities. (NAN)

Equatorial Guinea court sends randy Baltasar Engonga to jail

A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced Baltasar Ebang Engonga, a former senior government official, to eight years in prison for embezzlement.

Engonga became famous after sextapes involving him and several women leaked online.

According to Hilario Mitogo, press director of the Supreme Court, the Bioko provincial tribunal found Engonga guilty of diverting funds meant for professional travel expenses for personal use.

Engonga, a former head of the national financial investigation agency, was tried alongside five other senior officials accused of misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars in public funds.

The case follows his detention in November, when videos of him with women, including the spouses of other officials, surfaced on social media while investigations into the embezzlement charges were ongoing.

NNPP writes INEC, demands stoppage of elections

The counsel for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Mr Ndubuisi Ukpai Esq., has written to INEC, demanding that the commission must stop all elections until its authentic logo is included in ballot papers for future elections.

This is contained in the letter made available to the media by the party on Wednesday in Lagos.

The letter, dated Aug. 25 and addressed to the INEC Chairman, was titled “RE: SUIT NO.: CV/3210/2025; New Nigeria Peoples Party VS Independent National Electoral Commission: Continued Representation of the Authentic Leadership of the NNPP and the Need To Maintain Status Quo Pending Determination of the Suit for Judicial Review”.

It stated that INEC should refrain from conducting all elections until it reflected the true and correct logo of the NNPP and participation of the party under the leadership of Dr Major Agbo as National Chairman.

“We remain counsel to the authentic leadership of the NNPP, under the national chairmanship of Agbo, and write at their instance.

“You will recall our previous correspondence, wherein we drew the commission’s attention to the imperative of strict compliance with subsisting judgements of competent courts, affirming the authentic leadership of the NNPP.

“Regrettably, in the face of INEC’s continued reluctance to give effect to the said judgements, our client was constrained to institute judicial review proceedings against the commission.”

According to the party, pursuant to the said action, on Aug. 15, 2025, the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory graciously granted our client leave to bring an application for an order of mandamus, compelling INEC’s compliance.

“Consequent upon this, an Originating Motion on Notice had been duly filed and served on the commission.

“May we respectfully remind the commission that upon the grant of leave in judicial review proceedings, the law imposes a duty to maintain the status quo and refrain from taking steps capable of rendering the substantive proceedings nugatory.

“As was held in Governor of Lagos State v. Ojukwu (1986) 1 NWLR (Pt. 18) 621, no party, and least of all a public institution, is permitted to take the law into its own hands or foist a fait accompli on the court.

“To do otherwise is to court judicial reproach and expose responsible officers to personal consequences for contempt of court.”

The NNPP also demanded that INEC must cease and desist from according any recognition whatsoever to the expelled members of the party, purporting to be leaders of the NNPP under one Dr Ajuji Ahmed.

It also stated that INEC must stop actions that might prejudice or compromise pending proceedings, in line with the express duty imposed on all authorities under Section 287(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to enforce and give effect to decisions of the courts.

“It has further come to our client’s knowledge that the expelled members have issued a notice, purporting to convene a so-called National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Thursday, Aug. 28.

“We must make it abundantly clear that any such purported meeting is unlawful, null, and void, being in flagrant violation of binding judicial pronouncements.

“We, therefore, urge in the strongest terms that INEC must not attend, monitor, observe, or lend any form of recognition to such an illegal gathering.

” To do so would amount to clear interference in a matter sub judice and a direct affront to the authority of the court.

“This correspondence is issued to place the commission on the path of legality and to forestall the necessity of further legal recourse against it.

“We trust, therefore, that INEC will act with the institutional circumspection and fidelity to the rule of law that the Constitution demands,” it added.

I take responsibility for Abuja-Kaduna train accident – NRC MD

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, said he takes full responsibility for Tuesday’s derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train, which occurred along the Kaduna corridor shortly after departure from Abuja.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief yesterday, Opeifa assured Nigerians that the ongoing investigation into the incident would be thorough and transparent.

“Beyond apologising to Nigerians, I want to state clearly—as the Managing Director and Chief Executive—I take full responsibility.

“When it comes to safety, there is no room for indifference. Once something like this happens, the chief executive must own it—and I do,” he said.

The MD said the injuries of four of the Abuja-Kaduna train passengers were serious.

Opeifa stated, “Coming to the fatality and the casualties, there was no fatality. We thank God. That was a near miss because for this kind of accident or incident, you see some level of fatality, but we thank God for this.

‘And for those who were injured, four are serious, and another two or so were discharged immediately, and we will follow up on those that might still be in the hospital.

“I don’t know as of this moment, we’ll follow up. So we’ll also follow up with the remaining 618 people on the train because of the post-traumatic experience. We have the full contacts and we’ll do that.”

He, however, said that though the incident should not have happened, the NRC would ensure that there was no recurrence.

“I want to assure Nigerians that an incident like this is not expected, is not prayed for, should not be happening, but where it does, it is to bring out the best in us.

“And I assure Nigerians that just as we are doing currently on the Warri-Itakpe, which he (the analyst) also mentioned, we shut down the Warri-Itakpe (route) three weeks ago.

“I ordered the shutdown for safety reasons, and if you see the level of work the men have been doing on the track, cutting it off and replacing it is to make sure things like this don’t happen,” he added.

Asked whether there was any suspicion around sabotage regarding the incident, Opeifa said, “It would be premature for me to speak on that because that will be undermining the authority that is meant to do the investigation. But I want to assure Nigerians that our tracks are safe from vandals and terrorists.

“This particular track is being monitored by the military. You can see that immediately it (the derailment) happened, within five, 10 minutes, the helicopter was there hovering.

“The Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian army are all along this corridor, and I think, for the record, we’ve not had any issue of banditry, terrorism attack along that corridor.

“But you can’t wish anything away. The investigation will tell us what happened, and I wouldn’t want to comment because I’m a party to the investigation.”

The NRC chief executive said that NSIB would have to declare the site open for reconstruction before the corporation would do a safety audit to determine when services on the route would be reopened.

“The first thing that will happen is that the NSIB will determine when the site is open for reconstruction.

“So, from the time they tell us that it’s ready for reconstruction, I don’t see us spending more than 30 days. So it depends on when they declare the site open for reconstruction,” Opeifa stated.

The incident occurred on Tuesday along the Kaduna corridor shortly after the train left Abuja at about 11 am, en route to Kaduna.

A passenger on board the train described the scene as chaotic, with people scrambling to safety.

Following the incident, the NRC suspended train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna route till further notice.

Opeifa had, while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, hours after the incident, said that some technical staff of the corporation, alongside the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and other relevant agencies, were on the ground at the train derailment site carrying out an investigation.

He also dismissed claims that the trains were not in good condition and said the refund of the ticket fees had been initiated for all passengers on board.

In January 2023, an Abuja-Kaduna train derailed in the Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a few minutes from its destination – Kubwa.

While confirming the incident, the management of NRC said no casualty was recorded.

Assumpta Cathedral inducts HRM, Eze Obi Ejeshi, bestows  Ezienyi on him during Archbishop’s  pastoral visit

By Fredrick Njoku

The 2025 pastoral visit of the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, to Maria Assumpta Cathedral on Sunday, August 17th, will remain etched in the hearts of parishioners, guests, and faithful around the world, as one of the most vibrant and spiritually uplifting events in recent memory.

A key highlight of the occasion was the induction of His Royal Majesty, Eze Obi Ejeshi, the Ezeukwu IV of Emekuku Ancient Kingdom, into the prestigious “Ezienyi” League of the Cathedral — a title reserved for outstanding lay faithful recognized for their service and promotion of the Catholic faith.

With his dignified presence, calm charisma, and traditional poise, Eze Obi Ejeshi captivated the audience and added royal splendour to the event.

His role in performing the traditional breaking of the kolanut — a revered act strictly reserved for a royal father — marked a spiritual and cultural bridge in the day’s proceedings.

Following prayers, the Archbishop led the faithful in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, which culminated at Obiri Odenigbo, a venue that became a hub of colourful and engaging activities. Among the standout moments were: makeshift amusement park for children, live art presentations by schoolchildren featuring Pope Leo XIV and three living prelates of the archdiocese, and the induction of the four distinguished individuals into the Ezienyi League.

The 2025 Ezienyi inductees were: HRM Eze Obi Ejeshi (Traditional Ruler of Emekuku), Junior Okoro, Chief Ifeanyi Nwagu, KSM, Hon. Ugonna Ozirigbo. Their award plaques, which read in part “In recognition of your selfless service to the Church and humanity”, were presented by the Archbishop. The honours reflect their visible commitment to faith, leadership, and community development.

Speaking to journalists shortly after receiving his award, Eze Obi Ejeshi expressed profound gratitude to God and the Church.

“I am overwhelmed by the turnout and the recognition. I sincerely thank the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, for this great honour. I also appreciate the Laity Council and all arms of the Parish involved in my nomination. This is a moment I will cherish deeply,” he stated.

It is worth noting that Eze Obi Ejeshi’s late grand father, a revered monarch of the Emekuku Ancient Kingdom, played a foundational role in the spread of Catholicism. He was instrumental in bringing the missionary church to Emekuku during the early days of the Owerri ecclesiastical province, which once covered vast areas including Owerri, Rivers, Orlu, Okigwe and Umuahia, before later restructuring.

APC Blasts Obasanjo over Tinubu ‘Incompetence’ remark

… Labels ex-president hypocrite

APC has blasted Obasanjo over Tinubu ‘incompetence’ remark and labelled ex-president hypocrite.

It was reported that the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has fired back at former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his claim that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is competing with that of the late Muhammadu Buhari in incompetence.

In a statement issued yesterday, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, described Obasanjo’s remark as “laughable and disgracefully hypocritical,” insisting that the former president lacked the moral authority to judge any leader.

Obasanjo had made the comment in his new book, Nigeria: Past and Future, where he reviewed past Nigerian leaders and described Buhari’s regime as the “worst civil administration” in the nation’s history, while adding that Tinubu’s government appeared to be “competing with it.”

But Lagos APC strongly disagreed, accusing Obasanjo of arrogance, squandered opportunities, and failed leadership during his own tenure.

“It is ironic that a man whose time in office is remembered more for political arrogance, squandered opportunities, and failed democratic subversion would have the audacity to label anyone incompetent,” the party stated.

Oladejo further defended Tinubu’s reforms, including fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange liberalisation, and anti-inefficiency measures, stressing that these were bold steps past leaders such as Obasanjo “either broke or ignored.”

The APC also accused the former president of presiding over one of the most corrupt governments in Nigeria’s history, citing alleged scandals in the power sector, the controversial third-term agenda, and ballooning foreign debt despite debt relief claims.

“Obasanjo’s bitterness is well-known. He cannot control this government, and he resents that Nigeria has moved on from his brand of egocentric, do-or-die politics,” Oladejo said.

Reiterating its support for Tinubu, the Lagos APC insisted that the president was focused on reforms, recovery, and renewal not competing with past leaders.

“If Nigeria is still recovering from years of structural rot, Obasanjo bears a huge chunk of the blame. The mess didn’t start with Buhari, and it certainly isn’t being deepened by Tinubu it started long before, under the watch of men who now pretend to be saints,” the statement added.

No more corruption since I took over as president, Tinubu boasts

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Brazilian investors that Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms are delivering tangible results, boasting that there is “no more corruption” since he took office.

The President made the statement during a meeting on Monday with ministers from both countries and members of the Brazil Business Group, where he reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to strengthen partnerships in technology transfer, food security, manufacturing, and renewable energy.

President Tinubu described Nigeria’s economic landscape as a “vast, untapped market full of opportunities for Brazilian companies.”

He acknowledged that the reforms he’s implemented were “initially painful, but today the result is blossoming.

“It’s getting clearer to the people. We have more money for the economy, and no more corruption.”

To demonstrate the new climate of transparency, he pointed to the Central Bank of Nigeria, stating, “You don’t have to know him before getting the foreign exchange you need. The speculators are out. In our currency market, the door is open for businesses.”

Reflecting on his previous engagements in Brazil, the Nigerian leader emphasised the urgency of moving beyond symbolic ties to concrete economic cooperation.

“We have allowed some problems and activities in the past to deter us from making progress and fulfilling our promises, but today we say that is the end of that.”

Customs hands over N3.7b expired drugs to NAFDAC in Lagos

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’, Ikeja, has handed over three trucks of various expired pharmaceutical products to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), as part of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Customs and NAFDAC.

The Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the expired pharmaceuticals stood at ₦3,779,500,000

The Controller of the Unit, Mohammed Shuaibu, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to his office by the new NAFDAC Director in charge of enforcement and investigation, Dr. Martin Iluyomade.

Addressing reporters at the government warehouse in Ikeja, Lagos, Shuaibu reaffirmed the service’s dedication to upholding the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Customs and NAFDAC and promote their collaborative efforts.

He stated that the MoU marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s fight against fake and counterfeit products.

“What we are witnessing today is a follow up of the MoU,” he stated, “emphasising the importance of collaboration among regulatory and security agencies to continuously thwart the smuggling and importation of these harmful consignments.”

The Comptroller disclosed that a total of three trucks filled with various brands of expired pharmaceutical products were being handed over. These include items in sacks and cartons such as Hyergra, Royal Tablets 225, CSC Codine Syrup, Really Extral, Tramadol, Amlodipine, Milk Oil Flavour, and Firegra, among others.

The wide range of these products, he said, “poses serious risks to public health if not properly regulated.

It was revealed that the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of the expired pharmaceuticals stood at ₦3,779,500,000.”

The Comptroller emphasised that the service remains committed to ensuring the safety and efficacy of medications.

“Expired products must be handled with utmost seriousness,” he warned, adding that “the potential risks to public health from expired or counterfeit products can not be underrated.”

He assured the public that the service prioritizes the health and safety of Nigerians by preventing expired or counterfeit drugs from circulating in the market.

The handover, he noted, is not a one-off event, as more products will be transferred to NAFDAC following the conclusion of ongoing investigations.

He reiterated the importance of the continued collaboration between NCS and NAFDAC.

“This collaborative effort sets a precedent for future actions aimed at ensuring that only safe and effective medications are available to the Nigerian population,” he said

Receiving the consignments on behalf of the Director General of NAFDAC, Dr. Iluyomade, a representative of the agency, commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its unwavering commitment to the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two government agencies.

Iluyomade lauded the ongoing collaboration, describing it as a “healthy and strategic partnership” and pledged that NAFDAC would redouble its efforts in the fight against the smuggling of counterfeit and fake pharmaceutical products into the country.

Police arrest scores in Rivers community over flogging of officer

Police operatives from the Rivers State Command have invaded Nkpolu Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state and arrested scores of youths, women and men.

The development followed reports of youths of Nkpolu, who were on “No Drug Abuse” campaign, flogging a policeman, and two others who were allegedly caught using illicit drug.

The fierce looking policemen had stormed the community, yesterday, around 4:00pm with about eight vans.

The gallant police men who had arrived the community on orders from the hierarchies were led by the cop, Joshua Nyian, who was reportedly caught taking the illicit drug and flogged in the community.

But, the police in the state said Nyian reported a case of assault and Stealing by youths of Nkpolu.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police, in a statement in Port Harcourt, preceding the invasion of the community, noted that the police officer was assaulted.

She said: “On 24th August 2025 at about 1:40 p.m., one Inspector of Police , Joshua Nyian, attached to Woji Division, reported a case of assault and stealing.

“According to the report, at about 10:20 a.m. on the same date, while returning from work, the officer stopped at Nkpolu to see his woman friend, who is pregnant for him. He was suddenly accosted by the Nkpolu Youth President, the Community Chairman, and about twenty youths. They allegedly assaulted him by beating him up, dragged him to the main road, seized his police identity card and phone, recorded him on video, and forcefully collected the sum of seventy-eight thousand naira (₦78,000) from him.

“The officer further alleged that the Youth President has been making advances to his woman friend, which may have prompted the attack.

“The officer’s statement was voluntarily recorded, and a medical form was issued to him for treatment. Frantic efforts are ongoing for the youth president with others involved to come forward with their evidence.”

It would be recalled that Nyang, a policeman serving in Rivers State, was caught by the youths of the community, who had declared ‘No Drug Abuse” campaign in their area.

The youths lead by their chairman, Comrade Owhondah Chamberlain, had vowed to stamp out drug abuse in their community, noting that the menace was triggering criminality.

Before the police invasion of the community for mass arrest, Chamberlain had noted that the campaign was not targeted at anyone, but that it was aimed at saving youths from drug use.

He noted that the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), was aware of the effort, adding that all the drug sellers arrested have been handed over to the Drug Agency.

He stated that the youths did not know that a policeman was among the drug users they caught, adding that he was not in police uniform when they meet him and others taking the hard substance.

He said: “We started this drug war in our community, because drug is destroying our feature leaders. We petitioned to the NDLEA, they are giving us their support. All the drug sellers we have arrested, they are in their custody.

“We did not know that a policeman was among the people we caught, because he was not putting on police uniform. It was when we were interrogating them that we found out. ‘If he (Nyian) is denying that he is not into drug, he should be taken for drug test to check his innocence. He caught him and others taking drugs, why we have already warned sellers and user to stear clear of our Nkpolu. We did not take money from him. Police can go to the bank to check if he send any N78,000 to me or the youth body.”

NANS vows critical assets shutdown over ASUU strike threat

The National Association of Nigerian Students has threatened to shut down critical infrastructure nationwide if the Federal Government fails to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, which has again warned of a possible nationwide strike.

NANS Assistant General Secretary, Emmanuel Adejuwon, in an interview with The PUNCH on Monday in Abuja, expressed deep concern over ASUU’s latest threat, vowing that the union would “mobilise Nigerian students for massive nationwide protests that will shut down roads, airports, government offices, and critical infrastructure.”

“Let it be on record: if this strike is not averted, we will bring the country to a standstill until the future of Nigerian students is secured. The time for games is over. The Federal Government must act now. ASUU must act responsibly. And Nigerian students will not sit idle while our future is wasted,” the NANS leader said.

Adejuwon stressed that only the children of the masses are negatively impacted by ASUU strike, saying, “This strike must not be allowed to happen.”

“It is obvious that strike actions only inflict pain and suffering on the children of ordinary Nigerians, the masses who struggle day and night to keep their children in school. The politicians and government officials whose failures created this crisis are not affected; their children are comfortably schooling abroad or in expensive private universities. If the children of these politicians were in our public institutions, this issue would have been resolved immediately.”

He accused the Federal Government of endless promises and insincerity, saying students had grown weary of “being victims of leadership irresponsibility.”

“We demand that the Federal Government, without delay, meet its obligations to ASUU and resolve all outstanding issues. Enough of the endless promises, excuses, and insincerity. Nigerian students are tired of being victims of leadership irresponsibility,” he declared.

While demanding government action, Adejuwon also called on ASUU to rethink its tactics.

“At the same time, we call on ASUU leadership to reconsider the weaponisation of strike as the only tool of engagement. Every strike action destroys our academic calendar, elongates our years in school, and diminishes the quality of our education. The lecturers must understand that their struggle, no matter how just, should not become a weapon against the same students they claim to fight for,” he said.

Meanwhile, ASUU branches across the country, on Monday, stressed their demands, threatening that another strike was imminent if the Federal Government failed to act.

In Ibadan, ASUU’s Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Biodun Olaniran, speaking at a news conference on Monday, urged the Federal Government to implement the recommendations of the Yayale Ahmed report submitted in February to avert another strike.

He said the report captured all contentious issues between the union and government and represented a consensus after years of negotiations, but had been left unimplemented.

“The true test of government’s sincerity lies in how it handles the Yayale Ahmed report,” Olaniran said. “Our members are frustrated with delay tactics and are no longer willing to be dragged along endlessly. Implementing this report is the surest way to restore confidence and industrial peace.”

Olaniran listed concerns including the 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement on sustainable funding of universities, victimisation of union members in LASU, KSU and FUTO, outstanding 25–35 per cent salary awards, unpaid third-party deductions, and over four years of unpaid promotion arrears.

He faulted the continued use of the IPPIS platform for payment of members, which the union had long rejected, and lamented the non-payment of earned academic allowances.

“Many of our members cannot provide education for their wards and have turned to borrowing to meet obligations,” he said. “Poor funding, withheld salaries, non-payment of promotion arrears, and failure to mainstream earned academic allowances have worsened our plight and contributed to brain drain.”

On autonomy, Olaniran decried “the persistent erosion of university autonomy by the government with alarming impunity.”

“ASUU has strongly opposed the unlawful dissolution of Governing Councils in public universities, even where no misconduct has been reported and the councils had not completed their statutory tenure,” he added.

Chairpersons of ASUU branches from UI, UNILORIN, LAUTECH, UNIOSUN, KWASU and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education attended the briefing.

Also in Abuja, the ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Al-Amin Abdullahi, reiterated the union’s demand for the implementation of the 2009 Agreement and the release of three and a half months of withheld salaries.

“There is a crisis affecting universities in Nigeria, and it is not just a problem for ASUU; it is a problem for the entire country,” Abdullahi said. “The purposeful mortgage of a nation’s future and the endangerment of generations yet to be born is the result of a nation’s disregard of education.”

He listed the union’s demands to include payment of promotion arrears, release of third-party deductions, one year arrears of the 25/35 per cent salary award, and adoption of UTAS as the university payment system.

“It is impossible for a nation to advance beyond the standard of its university system. Yet successive governments have systematically underfunded universities, leaving overcrowded classrooms, inadequately equipped laboratories, and inhabitable hostels. This neglect has created unconducive learning environments and a decline in global ranking of Nigerian universities,” Abdullahi warned.

He said that in line with UNESCO’s convention, both federal and state governments must prioritise education through increased annual budgetary allocations.

In Uyo, the Calabar Zone of ASUU rejected the recently launched Tertiary Institution Staff Loan Scheme, describing it as “an insult to the sensibilities of tertiary workers and the height of mockery of the Nigerian university system.”

Zonal Coordinator, Dr. Ikechukwu Igwenyi of Ebonyi State University, said the government was using the scheme as a distraction from its failure to implement a new salary structure and honour agreements.

“It insults our sensibilities that a government that pays its workforce with an outdated salary structure adopted 17 years ago will refuse to renegotiate the same salary since 2012, refuse to pay third-party deductions for almost a year, and refuse to pay arrears of promotion—yet it comes up with an impossible and slavish loan in a depressed economy,” Igwenyi said.

He accused government of “puerile duplicity and infantile cunning,” dragging the union and public into believing in dialogues whose outcomes were never implemented.

“How can government owe its workforce and turn around to offer impoverished workers an impossible loan scheme? How can it impose loan recovery on staff unions as guarantors, as if we are employers of tertiary workers?” he asked.

“We therefore make bold to reject the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Loan and everything it represents because it has been described as a poison chalice.”

Igwenyi warned that the union’s planned meeting with the Federal Government on August 28, 2025, would be its last. “We cannot continue to spend our meagre resources attending meetings whose outcomes are not predictable,” he said.

With frustration building among both lecturers and students, ASUU and NANS have set the August 28 meeting as a decisive moment for government to act.

For NANS’ Adejuwon, the message is clear: “The time for games is over. The Federal Government must act now. ASUU must act responsibly. And Nigerian students will not sit idle while our future is wasted.”

Senator Athan Achonu Condemns Okigwe Killings

…Urges Ndi Igbo to End Self-Destruction

Senator Athan Nneji Achonu, former lawmaker and Labour Party Governorship Candidate in the 2023 Imo State Election, has condemned the brutal killing of five innocent persons in Ezinachi, Okigwe LGA, days after military personnel were withdrawn from the area. The victims — Mr. Emeka Ezeagwula, Mrs. Blessing C. Ezeagwula, Mr. Ejike Otuonye, Mr. Chidi Chineke, and one yet-to-be-identified person — were murdered in cold blood by gunmen who invaded the community unchallenged.

Describing the incident as “a shameful indictment on the leadership of Local and State Governments,” Senator Achonu demanded that LGA chairmen take charge, mobilize communities, liaise with security agencies, and defend lives. He warned that direct federal allocations to the councils must translate into real grassroots security.

While commending the courage of Okigwe youths who recently launched a vigilante group, he cautioned that without training, equipment, and coordination with the Police and military, they remain exposed. “We must strengthen them, not abandon them,” he stressed.

In a passionate appeal, Senator Achonu charged Ndi Okigwe and Ndi Igbo at large to stop the cycle of self-destruction: “Onye gbụrụ nwanne ya abụghị dike” (he who kills his brother is no warrior) and “Ife kwulu, ife akwudebe ya” (nothing stands alone; our survival depends on standing together). “Enough is enough. We cannot continue killing ourselves while outsiders profit from our pain,” he said.

He extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged urgent community-led security partnerships, real investment in local intelligence, and unity across Igbo land. “History will not forgive us if we allow our villages to become graveyards. The time to act and to unite is now.”

NSA hands over 128 rescued kidnap victims to families

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, yesterday reunited 128 rescued kidnap victims with their families in Abuja.

The victims, females and children were rescued by security forces in two different operations in Kaura Namoda in Zamfara State, according to Ribadu.

He said the victims will be treated for trauma and helped to settle down in their communities.

Ribadu, while commending security forces, assured that the perpetrators will be hunted and brought to justice.

Earlier, the National Coordinator, National Counter Terrorism Centre Major General Adamu Laka said one of the rescued children died due to illness while a premature baby delivered during the rescue operation was being incubated in a medical facility.

Court orders six banks to submit Sowore’s account details to IG

The Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday ordered six banks to provide the Inspector-General of Police with account documents and full transaction details, including inflows and outflows, linked to Omoyele Sowore from January 2024 to date.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order after the IGP’s lawyer, Wisdom Madaki, moved an ex parte motion to that effect.

In the motion, the IG stated that Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, is under investigation for alleged terrorism financing, money laundering, and fraudulent activities.

No fewer than 26 bank accounts linked to Sowore are said to be under probe, including accounts belonging to Sahara Reporters Media Foundation and the African Action Congress.

In the ex parte motion marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1757/2025, the IG listed Sowore and Sahara Reporters Media Foundation as 1st and 2nd defendants.

The applicant also joined United Bank for Africa Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Opay Digital Services Ltd, Moniepoint, and Kuda Microfinance Bank Ltd as the 3rd to 8th defendants, respectively.

The IGP sought “an order directing the following banks: UBA Plc, GTB Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Opay Digital Services Ltd, Moniepoint, and Kuda Microfinance Bank Ltd to furnish the applicant, through the office of the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit, with the account opening package/mandate card and certified true copies of statements of account reflecting transfers and account numbers of both inflows and outflows from January 2024 to date.”

In his five grounds of argument, the IGP said Sowore “is being investigated for terrorism financing, money laundering, and fraudulent activities.

“That the complainant has commenced an investigation into the activities of the 1st respondent.

“That the accounts for which the statements are sought are those being used by the 1st respondent for terrorism financing and money laundering.”

The applicant further argued that the relief sought was necessary to aid police investigations and that refusal would jeopardise the process.

In an affidavit attached to the motion, Bassey Ibrahim, a police officer in the Legal Section of the Force CID, alleged that his office had received intelligence reports indicating that Sowore “is using the accounts for terrorism financing, money laundering, and to receive financial support from foreign partners for terrorism.”

Ibrahim stated that securing the court’s order was necessary to obtain the account statements and enable the police to investigate the alleged fraudulent activities of the respondents.

He added, “That the respondents will not be prejudiced or indemnified by the grant of this application. That I swear to this affidavit in good faith, believing the contents to be true and correct in accordance with the provisions of the Oaths Act, 2024.”

In his ruling, Justice Nwite held that the application was meritorious.

“I have listened to the submissions of counsel to the applicant, and I have also gone through the affidavit evidence. I am of the view, and so hold, that the application is meritorious. The prayer is hereby granted as prayed,” the judge ruled.

Passengers stranded as Abuja-Kaduna train derails

An Abuja-Kaduna passenger train yesterday derailed close to Jere Station.

The incident left hundreds of passengers stranded, though no life was lost.

In a video trending online, onlookers could be heard saying “the train is full and they are coming out”.

Confirming the incident, the Nigeria Railway Corporation,(NRC), said the train derailed between Kubwa station and Asham station.

said emergency responders have been drafted to the scene of the incident.

Opeifa said: “NRC confirms a train derailment involving its Kaduna bound AKTS train service at about 11.09 at KM 49 between Kubwa station and Asham station.

“Emergency rescue, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals have already been mobilised.

“Full compliment of security already on ground as effort is ongoing to move all passengers on train back to Abuja safely. Kindly bear with us at this moment.”

This comes days after the NRC confirmed that one of the coaches’ wheels on the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service, (AKTS), experienced a hot axle several kilometres from Rigasa Station in Kaduna.

The earlier incident, which occurred on August 20, was attributed to hot wheel friction resulting from abnormal temperatures caused by excessive heat on the journal housing.

The Delta State Police Command said it has arrested four of its officers seen counting bundles of cash inside a patrol van marked ‘Area Command Asaba’ in a viral video.

Edafe assured the public that necessary sanctions would be imposed once disciplinary proceedings were concluded.

Gunmen kidnap pastor, church member

Unidentified gunmen have abducted the pastor of the Christian Evangelical Fellowship of Nigeria, (CEFN), Friday Adehi, and another member of the church, Gabriel Ezekiel, in the Ofun LGA of Kogi State.

The duo, who were kidnapped shortly after church service on Sunday, were reportedly travelling on a motorcycle when they ran into the kidnappers along Ajegwu-Ojodu Road in the same local government area of the state.

The abductees were said to have attended a naming ceremony of another member of the church after their Sunday service and were returning to their residence in Itobe when they were abducted at gunpoint.

“The incident happened between 3 and 4 p.m. on 24th August 2025 (Sunday) when both members of the church were returning from Ojodu to Itobe. The pastor was riding on his bike with another man accompanying him.

“Then the kidnappers, who were lying in ambush, suddenly burst onto the road when they sighted the motorcyclist approaching. The kidnappers stopped them at gunpoint and directed them into the bush,” an eyewitness told newsmen.

However, the CEFN Church and other Christian faithfuls have declared prayers and fasting for God’s intervention in the safety and freedom of the church members.

Also, the apex Igala socio-cultural organisations, ICDA, and Ukomu Igala have called on the Kogi State government to prioritise the deployment of drone technology to effectively track kidnappers and bandits using the forests as their hideouts to negotiate ransom.

The group had stated that the strategy will enable the joint task force to achieve results in their war against criminals in the forests.

By Ben Duru

The Chairman of Isu Local Government, Chief Kenneth Ukah has declared that his administration with witness tremendous developmental projects for which the people will remember and assured that no part of the area would be left untouched in his quest to bring smiles to the faces of the people.

He reiterated that the sorry state of infrastructure in Isu will soon be confined to the dustbin as his administration has commenced people oriented programmes and projects that will impact positively on the people.

Ukah, who said this during the flag off of the first phase of solar energy street light distribution across the communities in the council area, said his government will continue to work in line with the Shared Prosperity mantra of the governor, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma.

He described the governor as a statesman that had come to wipe away the tears of many years of mis-governance and that his legacy projects across the length and breadth of Imo State speak for themselves.

The Isu council boss maintained that the solar street light distribution was in line with his visionary and people centered programmes, adding that it goes to show the unwavering commitment of his regime to the people that elected him and also promised he will continue to carry every segment along.

“I want to let the people of Isu know that we have come to work and to wipe away the many years of infrastructure decadence. What we are doing will touch all the communities in Isu. No community will be left out. Let me assure all and sundry that every community will be carried along in the journey of progress, unity and inclusive government.

“This laudable initiative reflects my administration’s determination to bring lasting infrastructure, security and development closer to the grassroots. We have done other projects, but this one is very symbolic.

The Chairman assured that this is just the beginning, as the second phase of the solar energy street light distribution project will soon reach other communities across Isu LGA, ensuring that no community is left behind.

Imo chater of equity: I can’t handpick my successor, says Uzodimma

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has declared that he would not handpick his successor, as the person must emerge through a rigorous democratic process.
He also noted that although, he authored the Charter of Equity as a means of ensuring inclusivity and justice in power rotation among the three zones of the state, it would also be subjected to democratic norms.
Uzodimma was responding to the demands of the people of Owerri zone, who paid him a courtesy call at the Government House on Wednesday.
The people had declared that they would support any candidate, chosen by Uzodimma from Owerri zone as his successor.
But he replied that while the charter of equity is there as a guide, it is not an automatic right because any zone that wants to produce the next governor must have to work with the other zones to realize their aspirations.
The governor explained that the Charter of Equity, established in Imo State, was borne out of clear intention to restore moral order, eliminate confusion, and check imbalance in the governance of the state.
In his words, “Charter of Equity is not a slogan for confusion, it is a document to let us know and remember the imbalance in the system and see how best to correct it; but not for people to enter social media and circulate fake news. We can not continue like this every time,” the governor stressed.
He commended Owerri zone leaders for their sense of unity and cooperation among stakeholders to achieve common goals.
Senator Uzodimma, however, stressed that the process of selecting a candidate must follow a purely democratic process; while urging Owerri zone to carry other zones along in their desires for the governorship and allow the will of God in all things.
“You must join me now for us to cure this confusion, because if we don’t cure this confusion under my watch, the man coming after me may not be as religious and God-fearing as I am.” Senator Uzodimma cautioned.
He maintained that Imo State is desirous of creative thinkers who are committed to serving the people and making strong and informed leadership decisions that encourage development.
The governor further encouraged the leaders and those who may be aspiring for governorship position in the state to slow down on campaigns but rather channel their energies to helping improve security, health and economic well-being of people in their various communities, emphasizing that “Health Insurance Scheme of this administration is real and effective”.

Odinkalu faults ex-NBA president, backs DSS screening for SANs

Human rights lawyer and former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has dismissed the criticism of the Department of State Services’ screening of newly cleared Senior Advocates of Nigeria by ex-Nigerian Bar Association General Secretary, Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN.
Akinboro had on Monday described the security vetting as an attack on the independence of the legal profession, insisting that the conferment of the SAN rank is a professional recognition under the Legal Practitioners Act and not subject to executive interference.
But reacting on Tuesday in a series of posts on X, Odinkalu said the rule was introduced in 2022 by then Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, and had been applied to SAN conferments in 2022, 2023 and 2024 without protest.
“These people are short of candour. The rules requiring screening of SAN candidates by DSS were made by Olukayode Ariwoola in 2022. They governed SAN conferment in 2022, ’23 & ’24.
“Rather than object, folks saw them and applied,” he wrote
He argued that it was inconsistent for lawyers to oppose DSS checks for SAN hopefuls while judicial nominees undergo the same process.
“Why are they objecting to the screening of SAN candidates by SSS? What do they have to hide?” he asked.
The former NHRC chair also maintained that Nigeria’s legal profession is not fully independent, noting that statutory bodies regulating it, including the General Council of the Bar, the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers and the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee, are government-controlled.
“The Nigerian Bar Association is an NGO with statutory privileges. I would like to see an independent Bar in my lifetime. But we have to fight for that.
“Those who enjoy the privilege of a parastatalised Bar should not come back to hoodwink or mislead people when they know better. It’s dishonest,” he said.
Akinboro had earlier faulted the decision, describing it as an encroachment on the independence of the legal profession.
“The conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is not a political appointment, nor is it an executive privilege.
“It is a professional recognition rooted in the provisions of the Legal Practitioners Act and administered solely by the LPPC,” he said.
According to him, subjecting candidates to further external vetting after the LPPC’s rigorous process undermines due process and threatens the autonomy of the Bar.
“The strength of the Bar has always been its autonomy. If we allow institutions outside the profession to insert themselves into its core processes without legal basis, we open the door to a precedent that may one day compromise not only the rank of SAN but also the independence of our courts, our appointments, and ultimately, our ability to dispense justice without fear or favour,” Akinboro added.

Relying on El-Rufai is political suicide, Zaria has not forgotten his wrongs – Mahdi Shehu

Human rights activist, Mahdi Shehu, has said the results of the recent Kaduna State by-elections show that former governor Nasir El-Rufai no longer holds the political weight many of his allies assume.

He described El-Rufai as a political burden and warned opposition parties that relying on him for electoral victories would be a clear suicide mission.

The commentator also mocked the performance of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which secured only 146 votes out of the 17,452 cast in the Basawa State Constituency election.

According to him, such a score reveal that the party is in destitution.“Any party that scored 146 votes out of 17,452 votes casted is a party in destitution, an outcast and orphaned no matter the crowd it mobilized during the electioneering campaign,” he wrote.

He added that the rejection of ADC and its allies in Basawa, Zaria Kewaye, and Chikun/Kajuru constituencies was a direct message to El-Rufai.

“Zaria people and voters have not forgotten, neither have their schooling children, nor their pensioners, teachers and health workers,” Shehu wrote.

“The 146 votes scored by ADC means he needs to go into soul searching, repent, ask for forgiveness and seek the face of God.”

Shehu also warned opposition parties; PDP, SDP, LP and ADC against depending on El-Rufai to boost their chances in future elections.

“It also sends a clear message to ADC/SDP/PDP/LP, that while El- RUFAI may be vocal, relying on him for their success in future elections is a clear SUICIDE mission and a CASINO with a blind player. A mental giant could as well turn out to be a political destitute with no value on election day.”

While noting that the PDP put up what he called impressive outings in the by-elections, Shehu argued that parties must choose their strategists carefully.

“If ADC, SDP, PDP and LP wish to make any impact in the coming elections, they must rely on actors with minimal toxic political backlog, not those who have inflicted deep political lacerations on people,” he advised.

He concluded with a proverb: “Every day for the thief, one day for the owners. It is an initial harvest time for El-Rufai.”

In Basawa constituency, a total of 17,452 votes were cast, with APC receiving 10,996 votes, PDP 5,499, SDP 811, and ADC 146.

2027: We’ll decide on coalition, supporting Tinubu’s re-election bid soon – NNPP

The New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, has said that it would decide whether to join a coalition or support president Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 general elections at its August 28 National Executive Council, NEC, meeting.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ladipo Johnson, said this in a statement on Tuesday.

Johnson disclosed that the NEC meeting would iron out various important issues, including upcoming congresses and the national convention, a review of recent by-elections, and plans for mass mobilisation and new member registration.

According to him, the NEC meeting would also discuss ongoing constitutional reviews aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.

Ahead of the 2027 elections, Johnson noted that NNPP remains open to various political options aligned with its founding principles and national interest.

“Politics is dynamic, but our actions and decisions must be within the context of principles and values,” he said.

He listed three possible paths for the party, including forming an alliance or coalition, contesting the election independently, or supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“So, to this extent, NNPP is still open to the three options we have talked about in the past: to form a kind of alliance or coalition, remain as NNPP and prosecute the election as an individual entity, or support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election,” he added.

The party’s spokesman, therefore, called on members to remain calm, assuring that the final decisions will prioritise the interests of the Nigerian people.

He also urged members to actively participate in the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise and prepare for the upcoming nationwide mobilisation and membership drive.

ADC rejects salary hike for politicians, demands pay rise for Nigerians

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the proposed plan to increase the salaries of political office holders in Nigeria, insisting that ordinary citizens, not politicians, deserve a pay rise.

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) had reportedly suggested a review of salaries for the President, Vice President, governors, and other top officials.

But the ADC described the move as tone-deaf and an affront to struggling Nigerians.

In a statement issued yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said such a proposal shows how disconnected the government is from the realities citizens face daily.

“We are aware of the Commission’s constitutional mandate to review salaries of political office holders, but proposing such at a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling with high food prices, rising fuel costs, and inadequate minimum wage only shows a total disregard for the people,” Abdullahi said.

He noted that politicians already enjoy bogus allowances and perks which far exceed what ordinary Nigerians can ever earn.

“How else are political office holders able to sustain their luxury lifestyles if not for these allowances? It is misleading to claim that their salaries are outdated,” he added.

The party stressed that instead of focusing on politicians’ pay, government should prioritize improving workers’ wages and welfare.

“For perspective, our national minimum wage stands at N70,000 per month, a figure that has been largely eroded by the APC’s inflation, even where it has been paid. Yet, unlike public office holders, most Nigerians do not receive additional allowances or emoluments to cushion the effects of the rising costs of living. This is why this proposed plan to increase the salaries of public office holders is not only tone-deaf, it is an all-out affront to the Nigerian people. It signals that the government is clearly disconnected from the struggles of ordinary citizens.”

The ADC has called for the immediate suspension of the plan to raise salaries for political office holders, describing it as unfair and insensitive. The party said such an increase should not even be considered while ordinary Nigerians are struggling with severe financial hardship.

According to the ADC, government should be more concerned with improving the living conditions of citizens rather than raising the pay of the President, governors, and other politicians who already enjoy a life of luxury.

The party also argued that leaders have no moral right to demand sacrifice from the people while they continue to make things easier for themselves.

It stressed that politicians cannot be shielded from the country’s economic challenges while everyday Nigerians suffer.

“As a party, we strongly believe that rather than further enriching political elites, all government policies at this time should prioritize raising the minimum wage to a living standard, ensuring timely and fair salaries for our civil servants, and strengthening our social welfare programs to reach the most vulnerable Nigerians,” the statement added.

Soludo’s wife reaches out to NYSC member brutalized by Anambra vigilante operatives

Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Dr Nonye Soludo, has reached out to the female National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, member, Ms Jennifer Elohor, who was seen in a video being brutalized by security operatives in the state.

Elohor in a now viral video was seen being brutalized by operatives of the Agunechemba, a state security outfit put together to fight rising crime in the state.

The operatives were said to have invaded the lodge where the corps member lived and brutalized her, also stripping her naked. The action has been roundly condemned by all segments of the society, with some people calling for the disbandment of the security outfit.

Meanwhile, the wife of the governor yesterday reached out to Ms Elohor to sympathize with her on the incident.

Mrs Soludo reportedly called and sympathized with the corps member, also inviting her to the Government House for a meeting.

“But as at the time, the lady was no longer in the state,” an aide of the governor told our correspondent

“She (Soludo’s wife) has asked her to reach out to her once she is in Anambra, and the lady was very happy with the humility of the governor’s wife and was pacified. We are expecting her here very soon,” the aide said.

Umuojisi Women hold colourful August Meeting  as Elizabeth, others unveil achievements

It was a very colourful event recently at  the Umuojisi  Unity Primary school, as the  women wing of Umuojisi Autonomous Community gathered in their glamorous  uniform to hold their annual August meeting  which is holistically associated with  the Igbos irrespective of one’s  religion or economic status.

Speaking to the media after the official open declaration of the event via prayers, the Chairlady of the group, Mrs. Elizabeth Eze, stated that their 2025 August meeting was designed to hold for two days where those of them at home could gather to evaluate their previous developmental achievements in Umuojisi community and also  deliberate on their future preparation for the actualization of other projects, with the support of their husbands.

Mrs. Eze stated that  their previously held August Meetings and their realized proceeds have been judiciously used to sink borehole and provide its regular maintenance, planting of palm seedlings, construction of new markets and many other things too numerous to mention.

She re-emphasized that the women of Umuojisi Development Union would not relent in championing development in the community, stressing that the ultimate ingredient that powered their earlier achievements was the enhancement of peace in  all families.                            She added that the community women have intervened in many family misunderstandings in the area, thereby encouraging harmony and progress.

In her own submission, the Assistant Chairlady of the body, Mrs. Anthonia  Ikpa, corroborated the position of the Chairlady, Mrs. Elizabeth Eze, in respect to their numerous realized achievements  by same women in Umuojisi, with some generated proceeds  from their previous August gatherings, stressing that all their achieved projects are for the betterment of the entire people.

Mrs. Ikpa reiterated the delight of her fellow community women in using this year’s  August meeting to showcase their  new uniform to the public. She added that  they had  earlier purchased  chairs, tables and canopies for use in same community.

When asked by the newsmen why their meeting hall was not filled  up as  usual, she re-echoed that it was as a result of the experienced  national economic hardship which made those at  home  to direct those   in diaspora not to return for the meeting, rather they should financially  support them to carry-on, promising to have a fuller house in next year’s gathering.

It could be recalled that this year’s August women  meeting of Umuojisi community went very successful irrespective of a little misunderstanding that allegedly ensued between their unpopular  traditional ruler and  the women over the choice of a meeting venue, Umuojisi Unity Primary school, Isiekenesi, Ideato South Local Government Area of the state.

How division in opposition may hand Tinubu an easy path to 2027 victory

As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections, political calculations are already beginning to take shape.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose victory in 2023 was achieved despite a turbulent campaign, appears ready for re-election. But beyond his strategies and performance in office, his strongest advantage in the coming election is not necessarily his political strategies, but the divisions tearing through the opposition.

From internal wrangling in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party’s struggle to consolidate its newfound national appeal, and the perceived power struggle in the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria’s opposition appears more preoccupied with internal issues than mounting a united front.

If this fragmentation persists, it could replicate the 2023 scenario, where multiple opposition candidates split the votes, clearing an easier path for Tinubu to emerge as Nigeria’s 16th president.

With Tinubu, who is renowned for his mastery of Nigerian politics and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) holding the power of incumbency, the opposition leaders’ inability to align behind a single credible candidate risks turning the 2027 race into a foregone conclusion.

Here are some of the adjudged ‘minor issues’ in the opposition that could seal President Tinubu’s return to power.

The struggle for ADC ticket

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), established to serve as an alternative and credible opposition party, has, in a short time, become a platform for individuals seeking the party’s presidential ticket.

What was initially expected to be a unifying platform for aggrieved blocs has instead become a source of fresh division, with multiple presidential hopefuls jostling for control.

The perceived struggle for power within the party is setting the stage for ego clashes. Already, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is quietly consolidating his influence within the coalition, while Peter Obi and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi have openly declared their presidential ambitions. Each commands his own following, but their parallel pursuits could jeopardise their main goal.

Atiku’s strategic grip on ADC

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who remains a towering figure in opposition politics, is believed to be exerting quiet but significant influence on the ADC. Although he has yet to announce his candidacy, Atiku’s loyalists now occupy key positions in the ADC’s National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and several state chapters. This behind-the-scenes dominance has unsettled other aspirants, fueling suspicion that the coalition may tilt in his favor long before the primaries are held.

While this demonstrates Atiku’s enduring strategic instincts, the perception that the former VP seeks to “own” the ADC could deter new entrants and weaken its broader coalition appeal.

Obi’s move to join the ADC coalition was initially seen as a strategic attempt to expand his base beyond the Labour Party. However, a leaked memo from his Obidient Movement, which accused the ADC leaders of sidelining their principal and his supporters in key decision-making processes, affirmed the narrative that all is not well in the coalition.

While Obi remains a potent figure, his path to the ADC ticket looks increasingly obstructed. And without a clear alliance mechanism or expanded coalition, Obi risks isolating himself and his bargaining power in the opposition space.

Unlike Atiku and Obi’s cautious manoeuvres, Rotimi Amaechi has chosen the direct route. In a recent X Space discussion, he declared, “I know Tinubu very well. I know his strengths. I know his weaknesses. And I know that if allowed to fly the flag of ADC, I will defeat Tinubu for sure.” Yet without a clear alliance with either Atiku or Obi, his chances of uniting enough of the opposition behind him remain slim.

While the ADC figures jostle for presidential tickets, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is quietly courting Obi’s return, with the party’s Governors’ Forum Chair, Bala Mohammed, hinting that his comeback could boost the party’s electoral fortunes.

However, some party heavyweights remain skeptical of his one-term pledge, favouring instead the possible re-emergence of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a recent interview, a PDP chieftain, Umar Sani, stated that the North would prefer Jonathan to Obi, describing the latter’s promise to spend four years in power as mere “political talk.”

With the ADC and PDP competing for the same opposition base, the dynamics point to a familiar danger.

If Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, and other aspirants pursue separate paths in 2027, the APC could once again benefit from a divided opposition.

Political analysts have warned that, without an urgent, deliberate effort to form a united front, the 2027 election could be decided before the first ballot is cast.

In politics, it is said that 24 hours is a long time. This suggests that the opposition still has enough time to close ranks and achieve its goal of wresting power from the APC. And for Tinubu, unity among his rivals is the only real threat; their division could well be his ticket to a second term.

Plant, nurture trees like children, agency boss urges Nigerians

The Director-General of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NGGW), Saleh Abubakar, has urged Nigerians to be intentional in planting and caring for tree seedlings, stressing that they should nurture them as they would their children.

Abubakar made the call yesterday during the launch and symbolic planting of five million date palm seedlings across 11 frontline states, a key initiative of the agency to combat climate change and enhance local livelihoods.

“So far, I’m satisfied with what is happening here. They have distributed as much as we expected, and the people have keyed into the programme. We’re going to make a fantastic outcome of this engagement with the communities,” he said.

He explained that the choice of date palms was deliberate, noting that besides their environmental benefits, they also provide a sustainable source of income for beneficiaries.

We have been engaging communities and stakeholders, compiling lists of beneficiaries, and we will begin distribution with those already registered so that monitoring will be easier,” Abubakar added.

Out of the five million seedlings allocated to the 11 states, Bauchi will receive 450,000, the DG disclosed, urging residents to care for the plants diligently.

“I will ask them to take very good care of these seedlings, nurture them as their children. In the long run, they will yield fruit and provide a good living for the people,” he said.

Representing the Emir of Katagum, the Village Head of Azare, Magaji Abdulkadir, also emphasised the need for commitment in nurturing the trees.

“Planting a tree is one thing, but nurturing it to growth is another. Please take good care of the seedlings, as you stand to benefit from the result,” he said.

He noted the importance of tree planting in the Sahelian zone, adding that the initiative will help restore degraded land while improving livelihoods in surrounding communities.
