The Consumer Protection Council (CPC ) In Imo State yesterday joined their counterparts all over the world to celebrate this year World Consumers Rights Day.

Speaking during the occasion at the CPC Complex Owerri, the State Commissioner For Trade and Investment,Barr Rex Anunobi commended CPC for the wonderful work they are doing in the State, especially on the area of fighting against hazardous and fake products in the market.

The State Commissioner who was represented by the permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Ebere Orji said that the Agency has  achieved its aim and objectives.

In her speech,the Director General of CPC, Dr Mrs Obioma Okafor said that the agency remains committed to protecting the welfare and rights of consumers through public enlightenment, effective monitoring and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Dr Okafor noted that this year’s theme “Safe Products, Confident Consumers” is both timely and significant and it emphasizes the need for consumers to have confidence in the goods and services they purchase, knowing that such products are safe, genuine and meet approved standards.

The CPC DG stated that the World Consumers Rights Day is celebrated globally every year on March 15th and the origin of this important day dates back to 1962, when the former President of the United States , John. F. Kennedy addressed the United States Congress and formally recognized the fundamental rights of consumers.

“In that historic address,he highlighted four basic consumer rights: the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose and the right to be heard.”

She commended the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma for protecting the rights of consumers through the agency and described him as a consumer friendly governor.

In her Keynote lecture, the technological controller, Nigerian Breweries Plc ,Mrs Uchenna Enyioko said that World Consumers Rights Day reminds Nigerians that protecting consumers is not merely a regulatory duty but a shared responsibility and a pillar of sustainable economic development.

Mrs Enyioko made it clear that the theme captures a simple but profound truth, when products are safe, consumers are confident, when consumers are confident,markets grow and when markets grow responsibly, economy prospers.

The highlights of the event was goodwill messages from various organizations and debate with topic “Government Regulation is more effective than self-Regulatory by companies in ensuring product safety” by Young Scientist College,Egbu Owerri And Urban Development Secondary school World Bank.
