The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs in Niger State, Ahmad Suleiman, said more than 200 corpses of victims have been recovered after devastating floods hit the Mokwa Local Government Area of the state.

The commissioner disclosed this on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief show yesterday.

She said, “We have more than 200 casualties or corpses but we are still looking for more.

“We are still recovering corpses up till now.

“Nobody can tell you the number of casualties in Niger State right now because up till now, we are still looking for some corpses.”

Suleiman said the Umar Bago administration in the north-central state has activated an emergency response and directed the distribution of relief materials to the displaced victims of the floods, who are housed in makeshift camps.

“The Niger State Government has put things in place and there are lots of contributions from various agencies and ministries. The damage on ground now, you cannot get it on social media except a visit to the scenes. There are lots of damage at the moment.

“The state government has sent trailers of rice to the victims. The wife of the governor also visited the local government yesterday and donated N50m,” he said.

Meanwhile, victims at makeshift camps continue to voice deep dissatisfaction over the handling of relief efforts.

A visit to the affected communities by our correspondent revealed the frustration and disappointment of flood victims, especially over the lack of adequate food supplies and poor camp conditions.

One of the victims, Mama Isah, expressed her pain, saying, “We are 17 people in my household, but we were only given one loaf of bread and some tea. How can that be enough for even our breakfast?”

She appealed to the government to allow well-meaning individuals and organisations to support them directly without interference or diversion.

Beyond food shortages, the condition of the camps has also come under scrutiny. A community volunteer, Hussaini Muhammed, described the camps as unsuitable for human habitation.

APC wins all 23 Benue LG election petitions at Appeal Tribunal

he Appeal Panel on Local Government Election Petitions for Benue State, sitting at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) House in Abuja, has upheld the elections of all 23 local government chairmen under the All Progressives Congress (APC), delivering a decisive victory to Governor Hyacinth Alia and the ruling party.
The verdict, delivered yesterday, June 3, 2025, overturned earlier decisions by the Local Government Election Petition Tribunals, which had nullified APC victories in nine local councils following the October 2024 elections conducted by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).
The affected local government areas in the earlier rulings were Vandeikya, Konshisha, Kwande, Ushongo, Otukpo, Agatu, Ado, Apa, and Ohimini.
However, the appellate panel dismissed the petitions filed primarily by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition groups, citing lack of merit and insufficient evidence of non-compliance with electoral laws.
Reacting to the judgment, Chairman of Agatu Local Government, Melvin Ejeh, hailed the decision as a triumph of justice and democracy.
He extended a hand of reconciliation to the opposition, urging them to join hands with the elected leaders in delivering good governance and development to the grassroots.

Stop Wike’s monthly media chats, IPOB lawyer urges Tinubu

A human rights lawyer and counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has called on President Bola Tinubu to stop the monthly media chat of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing it as wasteful and extravagant.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, Ejimofor said the media chat serves no purpose except to waste public funds and give the minister the opportunity to grandstand on national issues.

He expressed concern over the huge allocation of hundreds of millions of naira each month to finance the FCT minister’s media appearances.

He said it is lamentable and unconscionable, coming in the face of millions of Nigerians battling record inflation, stagnant wages, and deepening poverty, describing it as an exercise that offers little substance and reeks of misplaced priorities.

The statement read in part, “As millions of Nigerians battle record inflation, stagnant wages, and deepening poverty, it is unconscionable that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reportedly spends hundreds of millions of naira monthly on an ostentatious media chat – an exercise that offers little substance and reeks of misplaced priorities.

“Framed as a public engagement, this monthly spectacle is anything but a tone-deaf misuse of public funds – especially in a country where many survive on less than $2 a day, and access to basic healthcare, education, and shelter remains a daily struggle.

“To illustrate the waste: The cost of one media edition could fund emergency relief and shelter for thousands displaced by the recent floods in Niger State. It could refurbish crumbling primary schools, equip rural clinics, or sustain nutrition programs in IDP camps for several months.

“The optics are disheartening. The implications are worse. Nigerians are not asking for a televised circus – Nigerians are crying out for competent governance, prudent spending, and people-centred leadership.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must take urgent action: call the FCT Minister to order, halt this wasteful spending, and redirect focus to service delivery. This is not a time for flamboyance and fanfare. It is a moment that demands humility, responsibility, and an unwavering commitment to the public good. Nigeria deserves better. The time to act is now.”

FCT Commissioner of Police (CP) AjaokutaAdewale, has held a high-level meeting with all six Area Commanders, Divisional police Officers (DPOs), and heads of Tactical Teams under Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, a statement issued by FCT Police Command spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh has disclosed.

CP Adewale has announced a comprehensive security plan for Abuja ahead of several major events, including the IGP’s Honours and Award Night, the Eid-el-Kabir (Sallah) festivities, and the June 12 Democracy Day celebrations.

The meeting, which lasted three hours, was aimed at reviewing security measures and reinforcing the professionalism and accountability of officers during what is expected to be a busy period in the capital.

CP Adewaleemphasised the need for heightened security within each Area of Responsibility, particularly at key entry and exit points, as Abuja is set to receive senior police officers and dignitaries from across the country for the IGP’s event.

He also warned officers against extortion, unprofessional conduct, and misuse of police powers, stressing the importance of intelligence-led policing and maintaining public trust.

The Commissioner underscored the need for swift responses to distress calls, cautioning that any delays could jeopardise public safety.

He reminded officers that bail remains free and any demands for money would be met with strict disciplinary action. He further urged DPOs to maintain strict supervision of their officers to ensure full accountability.

CP Adewale also reiterated the importance of officers’ conduct in dealing with the public, highlighting that they must be approachable, camera-friendly, and uphold the positive image of the Nigeria Police Force.

He called for stronger community policing initiatives, including youth engagement programmes to promote trust and cooperation with local communities.

The police commissioner gave the following operational directives aimed at ensuring public safety and fostering public trust: deployment of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams to sweep worship and recreational centres ahead of expected gatherings; sustained intelligence-led raids on identified black spots known for illicit drug activities, to be conducted professionally and without abuse; zero tolerance for extortion in any form; officers must be smartly dressed, disciplined, and courteous in their interactions with the public; officers are strictly warned against involvement in civil disputes, particularly land-related matters and continuous raids must not serve as a cover for harassment or illegal financial demands.

Others include: reinforcement of the standing order that bail is free, any officer found requesting money for bail will be dealt with in accordance with established disciplinary procedures; DPOs are to ensure strict supervision and accountability of all personnel under their command; searching of mobile phones without appropriate legal authority is prohibited; all officers are expected to be camera-friendly, approachable, and uphold the image of the force; response to distress calls must be swift and efficient, with a command-wide target response time of under 10 minutes; crackdown on vehicles bearing fake or fraudulently acquired diplomatic number plates; and all DPOs are directed to initiate youth engagement programmes and foster close collaboration with local communities to promote community policing and crime prevention.

In his closing remarks, the Police commissioner reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the FCT Police Command to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors to the nation’s capital.

He called on the public to remain law-abiding and to partner with the police in keeping Abuja secure during the upcoming events.

Meanwhile, the Take It Back Movement had declared June 12 a “national day of resistance,” calling on Nigerians to stand “against tyranny and bad governance” under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

In a strongly worded statement issued on June 2, the group’s National Coordinator, JuwonSanyaolu, said that the current government had betrayed the democratic ideals for which many Nigerians fought and died.

“Nigeria stands today not as a democratic nation, but as a country at war with its own people,” the statement said.

The group accused the government of suppressing freedom of speech and undermining the right to peaceful assembly.

It cited instances of journalists being harassed, activists detained, and citizens arrested for social media posts, facilitated by the weaponisation of the Cybercrime Act.

“Even more alarming is the escalating assault on the right to protest,” the statement read. “Peaceful assembly, a cornerstone of any democratic society, has become synonymous to treasonable felony under the government of Tinubu.”

The movement also drew attention to ongoing violence and killings in rural communities across the country.

It highlighted the persistent bloodshed in Plateau, Benue, Southern Kaduna, and the Middle Belt, lamenting the state’s complicity in the violence through inaction, negligence, or outright denial.

“This is not a democracy; this is organised cruelty,” Sanyaolu stated.

Rejecting the official ceremonies typically held on June 12 to mark Nigeria’s Democracy Day, the Take It Back Movement vowed to use the day as a national day of resistance.

It urged all Nigerians—youth, students, workers, civil society, market women, artisans, and patriots at home and abroad—to mobilise and defend their rights.

“This June 12, we march not just for ourselves, but for the slain in Benue, the displaced in Plateau, the silenced in detention, and the starving masses abandoned by a corrupt elite,” the statement declared.

Seized phone: Ondo school VP beaten by WASSCE candidate’s parents

The Ondo State Ministry of Education announced yesterday that it has launched an investigation into the assault on the Vice Principal of Complete Child Development College, Aule, Akure, identified as MrRotifa, by the parents of a student.

It was reported that MrRotifa prevented an SS3 student from cheating during the ongoing West African Examinations Council Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination. The student was allegedly caught using an Android phone to cheat, which was subsequently confiscated by the Vice Principal.

The situation escalated when the student informed his parents, who allegedly hired thugs to attack MrRotifa.

A source revealed that the Vice Principal was forcibly dragged from a police vehicle and beaten to the point of near unconsciousness.

“When the hired thugs arrived at the school to attack the Vice Principal, the school called the police for assistance. However, the thugs overwhelmed the officers, dragged MrRotifa from their vehicle, and brutally assaulted him,” the source said.

The victim was rushed to a private hospital in Akure for treatment.

In response, the Ondo State Ministry of Education, through its Director of Schools, Mr Dare Obajulaye, confirmed that a preliminary investigation has commenced.

The statement read: “The incident began on Monday, May 26, when an Android phone was found in the possession of an SS3 student, contrary to school regulations. MrRotifa, the Vice Principal, confiscated the phone.

“On Thursday, the student’s mother came to the school to confront the management, resulting in the proprietor ordering the phone’s return, which was done. The student’s brother, an alumnus of the school, later harassed and threatened the Vice Principal.

“After school hours, the individuals were seen loitering nearby. The proprietor advised MrRotifa to report to the police station, where two officers escorted him in their van to locate the suspects, but they were unsuccessful.

“On their return, the suspects intercepted the police van, forcibly removed MrRotifa, and assaulted him. He was hospitalised but has since been discharged, though he has not returned home for fear of further attack.

“Investigations continue, and measures are being put in place to ensure the safety of staff and students for the remainder of the WAEC examinations.”

Amaechi hungry for power, not food, Wike tackles ex-minister

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, NyesomWike, has criticised former Minister of Transportation, RotimiAmaechi, over his recent “I’m hungry” remark.

Speaking yesterday during a media parley in Abuja, Wike asserted that the ex-Rivers State governor is hungry for power, not food, contrary to Amaechi’s claim.

Amaechi had, during an event marking his 60th birthday last week, commented on the state of the economy, stating, “We’re all hungry, all of us are. If you’re not hungry, I am. For us, the opposition, if you want us to remove the man in power, we can remove him from this power.

“In Nigeria, there are no capitalist ideas among the politicians; it’s about sharing.”

Responding to this, Wike said, “We have no time to listen to nonsense in Nigeria. I don’t understand why a man like Amaechi would choose his 60th birthday to lie to Nigerians about being hungry.

“He was Speaker from 1999 to 2007, Governor from 2007 to 2015, and Minister from 2015 to 2023. He never spoke about hunger during those years.

“Now they are regrouping. They are only hungry for power. This shows his failure. How can you trivialise the issue of hunger? He joined Atiku and claimed hunger. It is clear he cannot stay out of power. From 1999 to 2023, Amaechi stood before Nigerians and claimed hunger. He was a former governor who couldn’t secure even 25 percent for Buhari during elections, despite being the campaign DG.

“Thank God we did not support the PDP; otherwise, he would have taken the glory. He is now in a coalition. I don’t like to talk much. Let them form their team and start from home in Rivers.

“Let’s see how he plans to remove the president. Is it a military coup? The term ‘removal’ is synonymous with dictatorship or military coup. Nigerians remember what happened in 2015, and now he claims Nigerians are hungry.

“I am not a liability; I am an asset. You may dislike me, but I am an asset in ensuring President Tinubu wins a second term.”

Both Wike and Amaechi served as governors of Rivers State. Amaechi was a two-term governor from 2007 to 2015 before being appointed Minister of Transportation by former President Muhammadu Buhari. He also chaired the Nigerian Governors’ Forum from 2011 to 2015.

Prior to his governorship, Amaechi was Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007 and served as the pioneer chairman of Nigeria’s Conference of Speakers of State Assemblies.

Rivers: I am not in support of emergency rule – Wike

Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has declared that he has no crisis with Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State.
Wike equally said he was not in support of the State of Emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State.
Addressing journalists in Abuja yesterday, Wike said Fubara allowed himself to be used as a tool by his enemies to fight him.
He said: “I made it clear that this impunity will not stand, so what is happening in PDP is what I call undertakers because I see no reason why you will put yourself under that kind of crisis.
“I don’t have any crisis with him (Fubara). I’m not the President who declared a state of emergency; if Mr President had called me, I wouldn’t have agreed to the state of emergency.
“He knows when to lift, he has everything on his table, I don’t know. I have never supported it.
“But what I said was that the declaration of state of emergency was to save the governor because he was almost impeached.
“I don’t have crisis rather the governor, unknown to me, gave himself to be the tool for those who couldn’t fight me to fight me.”

Ex-pastor, five others in court over N620m fraud case

Court

The Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday told the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Gwagwalada that a former resident pastor of the First Baptist Church, Garki, Abuja, Rev. Dr Israel Akanji, and five others have questions to answer over their alleged involvement in a N620 million fraud involving church funds.
The defendants in the charge marked CR/1045/24 are alleged to have conspired in 2021 to commit a felony, in violation of Section 97 of the Penal Code.
The police further alleged that between 2012 and 2021, the defendants forged an amended version of the church’s constitution, falsely attributing it to the late Barrister Akin Aina, who was the church’s legal adviser and secretary of the Board of Trustees.
This act, the police argued, contravenes Sections 362 and 364 of the Penal Code.
The police also alleged that the defendants misappropriated N620 million belonging to the church, converting the funds for their personal use. They stated that these allegations fall under Sections 308, 309, 311, and 312 of the Penal Code, which address criminal breach of trust and fraudulent conversion of property.
In addition, the prosecution, led by Wisdom Madaki, alleged that the forged church constitution was fraudulently used in 2022, an offence punishable under Section 366 of the Penal Code.
Alongside Rev. Akanji, other defendants in the charge are Rev. Thomas Takpatore, MrBabatunde Adebayo, MrsAdenike Adebayo, MrOladeleAfolabi, and Mrs Gloria Olotu.

They are facing a five-count charge bordering on alleged conspiracy, forgery, and criminal misappropriation of church funds totalling N620 million.
At the resumed sitting on Tuesday, the police, through their counsel Veronica Bisan, who held brief for Madaki, told the trial judge, Justice J. A. Aina, that the defendants have a case to answer.
When the matter was called, Bisan informed the court that the case was slated for arraignment on Tuesday. However, the proceedings took a different turn following a pending application by the defence counsel, AdeniyiAkintola (SAN), who is seeking to quash the five-count preferred against the defendants.
Akintola told the court that his client was challenging the competence of the charge, which he described as baseless and politically motivated.
He argued that the entire case was an orchestrated attempt by a former member of the church, who he said had since left the church, to embarrass the institution and its leadership.
“The person making the allegation is no longer part of the church and is simply out to bring disrepute to it. We are praying that the court quash the charge in its entirety,” Akintola stated.
Responding, Bisan admitted that the police had yet to file a formal counter-affidavit, explaining that their investigation revealed substantial grounds for prosecution.
“The defendants, based on the findings of our investigation, have questions to answer. We request a short adjournment to respond to the application to quash the charges against the defendants,” the police said.
Akintola, however, told the court that the prosecution did not file anything in reply to the defendants’ motion, adding that what the prosecution intends to do is to hang the charges on the defendants.
After listening to the parties in the suit, the judge granted the police’s request and adjourned the case to June 22.

Police arrest Pastor for defiling 10-year-old girl in Rivers

A 45-year-old pastor identified simply as Lucky has been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl in Ihuaje community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The arrest was carried out by members of a local security outfit known as the ONELGA Security Planning and Advisory Committee (OSPAC), led by its Commander, Precious Ihuruzu.

It was gathered that Ihuruzu led his team to the community after receiving information about the incident. The suspect, who is also the pastor of a local church branch, was apprehended and handed over to the Ahoada Police Division.

Dennis Otobo, a member of the Association Against Child Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, said he was contacted by the gender desk of the State Ministry of Health to follow up on the case, which he agreed to do.

“In the course of my investigation, I discovered that Pastor Lucky (surname withheld), who is also the proprietor of a private group of schools in Ihuaje community, had been sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl under his care,” Otobo stated.

He explained that the abuse came to light when the girl’s parents visited her at the pastor’s house. “She told them what she had been going through, revealing that each time he abused her, he gave her N500 to keep quiet,” he said.

The parents immediately took the girl to the hospital for preliminary medical checks.

“At that point, I contacted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for assistance. The DPO told me to bring them in on Sunday and promised to handle the matter professionally. He kept his word because, as we speak, the pastor is in custody at the Ahoada Police Station,” Otobo added.

He commended the DPO of Ahoada Police Division, the Chief Security Officer of Ahoada East LGA, Hector Ekeakita, OSPAC, and human rights advocate Prince Wiro, the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights and Accountability Campaign, for their efforts in facilitating the arrest.

Otobo also called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation and, if the suspect is found guilty, ensure he is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the pastor’s arrest, stating that it followed a complaint of alleged defilement filed by the girl’s parents.

“Yes, I can confirm his arrest. The pastor is in our custody here at the Command. We received a complaint from the girl’s parents, and our officers, in collaboration with a local vigilante group, apprehended him. Investigation is ongoing,” she said.

Military proposes death penalty for soldiers selling arms to terrorists

…rescues 100 hostages through non-kinetic operation

…reduces Lakurawa threat

The military high command is proposing life imprisonment or death penalty for personnel selling or leasing arms or ammunition to bandits and terrorists.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector Operation FansanYamma, Maj.-Gen. IbikunleAjose, disclosed this when he played host to Defence Correspondents in Sokoto, on Tuesday.

The correspondents’ visit to the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army and the Theater Command Operation FansanYamma was part of the Defence Headquarters’ (DHQ) efforts to give journalists firsthand experience on the frontline.

The GOC was responding to allegations of soldiers aiding terrorists and bandits against the state, and the unguarded use of social media by soldiers in frontlines.

But Maj.-Gen Ibikunle said any soldier convicted of collaborating with bandits or terrorists will face severe penalties.

He said: “In fact at present, the military is proposing life imprisonment or death penalty for personnel selling or leasing arms or ammunition to bandits and terrorists.

“Regarding soldiers’ social media use on the frontlines, any violation is clear disobedience of our social media rules. Soldiers are required to adhere to our guidelines, and those who misuse social media face sanctions, including dismissal.”

Maj.-Gen. Ajose urged journalists to support the military’s efforts to rid the country of criminals by reporting only verified facts about military operations and avoiding fake news and misinformation.

Responding to reporters’ questions about drone threats from the terrorist group, the GOC stated that there have been no drone attacks by terrorists in the Northwest.

He said: ‘We are prepared for any eventuality. We have technology to counter such threats and our personnel are trained to handle them.

“When bandits first deployed a surveillance drone, our troops shot it down, and they haven’t attempted it since.”

Gen. Ajose said that heightened military onslaught in Sokoto and Kebbi states have subdued activities of the Lakurawa terror group.

“We have destroyed their camps in Sokoto and Kebbi State,” he said.

“Because it is a mobile terror group, they moved between Nigeria and Niger Republic, but we are working with our Nigerien counterpart so that they don’t give them breathing space.

“But this achievement came with a price, as some soldiers paid the supreme price and some decapitated.”

The GOC said that the Nigerian military has continued to curtail the criss-crossing of the Lakurawa group into Nigeria from Niger Republic through engagement with the locals in the border communities.

“In the communities we have a lot of presence, we were able to win the trust of the people and they provide us with information about the movement of this group,” he said.

“But we have problems where we don’t have a constant presence. This means that we just go into those communities when there are problems and we leave. In these communities we won’t be able to win the people’s trust. And this is where the state government must come in.

“The state should come in to win their trust by providing them with basic amenities. This will give them a sense of belonging, and subsequently enhance our operations.”

The GOC said that military’s non-kinetic operation last month led to the release of 100 kidnap victims by their abductors in Katsina State.

He said the intensive engagement with the Fulani and Hausa communities in the state led to the unconditional release of the kidnapped persons.

The GOC said the engagement also led some bandits and terrorists to show interest in laying down their arms and surrendering to the military.

Imo CP orders investigation into killing of father of eight over land dispute

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP. AbokiDanjuma has ordered thorough investigation into the murder of a father of eight children, MrChibugoAmadi who was allegedly murdered by his kinsmen over a land dispute.

The Police Commissioner, while acknowledging a petition from the deceased family, ordered the homicide section of the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department to launch an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Speaking to our correspondent the wife of the deceased, ChinonyeAmadi in the company of three out of her eight children, narrated that the incident took place at their Village, Umuora in IsialaMbano LGA, Imo State where she said her husband’s killers conspired and murdered him.

“They stripped him naked, hitting him with weapons as he collapsed and died in their hands.”she lamented.

MrsAmadi disclosed that the problem started on April 3 ,2025 when her husband disagreed with his younger brother, EzemonyeAmadi over a land matter.

She said that the dispute later resulted in a fight leading to her husband inflicting injuries on his younger brother but afraid of revenge, her husband ran away from the community.

“In his absence, his kinsmen convened and adjudicated the matter, imposing a fine of #850,000 on him they conspired among themselves and sold my husband’s four plots of land at an undervalue price of #200,000, each plot in an area where a plot of land goes for #1, 500,000.

The money realized from the sale was paid to my husband’s younger brother as compensation for the injuries he sustained from my late husband.

Imo Assembly mandates Ministry of Livestock Development to revamp  Songhai farm

By Senator Onyekwere

Imo State House of Assembly has passed a motion to direct the state Ministry of Livestock Development to revamp the abandoned Imo state Songhai farm located at Nekede in Owerri West Local Government Area in order to ensure food security in the state.

The House took the resolution following a motion moved by the member representing Ohaji /Egbema state Constituency, Hon Uzoma Francis Osuoha

Hon Osuoha while presenting the motion said that the gesture will boost the food security and create employment opportunities for Imo indigenes.

Osuoha noted that the Songhai Farm was established in 2004 with intent to force down the price of food stuff for imolites and the nation at large.

According to him, the Songhai Farm which comprises of Livestock, fishery, animal husbandry and farming was a very huge success and lived to its expectations of providing food security and gainful employment as at then.

The lawmaker pointed out the revamp of the Songhai farm will geared towards being a source of succor for Imolites especially during this trying period because it sales at a reduce price considering the high cost of food stuff and its resultant effect on the lives of Imolites.

He regretted that the Songhai Farm presently has been a shadow of itself hence erosion has taken over almost half of its land marks.

He stressed the need for the Ministry of Livestock Development to collaborate with National Agricultural Land Development Authority to ensure that Imo state Songhai farm is brought back to its glory or its original plan so that Imolites can smile again.

Anxiety as nine patients run away from Ondo psychiatric hospital

No fewer than nine psychiatric patients have reportedly broken out of the Ondo State Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Akure.

It was gathered that the nine patients ran out of the facility on Saturday.

The incident caused panic among the residents of the area due to the danger they may cause in the city.

It was father that the patients, who were undergoing treatment at the hospital, were able to escape from the facility due to its weak security system.

One of the staff, who pleaded anonymity said, “Where we usually keep them is not that secured. The state government should please act fast and do something about it otherwise you will begin to see many of these patients in the streets of Akure.”

Speaking with newsmen, another source who had one of his relatives among the patients, lamented the worsening situation of things in the facility and called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for intervention.

“The state government should please help us to do something about the security system. It’s frightening that we bring patients here and later find them in the street after a few days.

“I personally spent about N200,000 to get my relative back here on Monday , just like others too. It is very embarrassing that patients can easily escape from a government hospital knowing fully well the nature of their illness and what can happen in the streets with them roaming around,” he said.

As of the time of filing this report, Professor Simidele Odimayo, the state’s Special Adviser on Health, could not be reached for reaction.

It would be recalled that in 2018, a patient of the Neuro-Psychiatric Specialist Hospital in Akure, reportedly beat doctor Akinwumi Akinloye, the Chief Medical Director, and three nurses to coma.

2027: Obi’s ally dumps LP, joins APC to work for Tinubu’s reelection

Fabian Ozoigbo, an ally of the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra state.

Ozoigbo, who was the head of Logistics of the Labour Party, declared that he is ready to work for President Bola Tinubu in 2027 for his efforts in stabilising the country since he assumed office.

He said there is a lack of trust in the Labour Party, while blasting the party for faulting the result as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the last presidential election.

Ozoigbo, who briefed reporters yesterday in Awka, said that as a member of the opposition, he had expected Nigeria’s economy to collapse, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

He, however, said that to his admiration, President Tinubu has managed to keep the economy stable.

He said, “As a member of the opposition, I had expected the economy to collapse irretrievably after the removal of fuel subsidy, but that the economy is still on, though with hardships is a puzzle to me.

“I have decided to come close to the government that is holding this economy to observe and take part in this surprising phenomenon.

“My goal is to be part of a new Nigeria that is possible with positive policies that will turn the economy around. Since the economy has not collapsed by now and there are signs of recovery, I want to be part of this economic miracle.”

Ozoigbo said his entry into the APC at a time Anambra is moving towards the November 8 governorship election was timely, especially with the election of a grassroots politician, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, as the candidate.

He said Ukachukwu and Senator Uche Ekwunife’s entry into the governorship race would make it easy for APC to win Anambra.

“APC in recent times threw up a Trojan horse in the person of Prince Nicolas Ukachukwu as their candidate.

“His emergence as a grassroots-oriented person, coupled with his philanthropic gestures over the years, has begun to attract people, especially the middle-class citizens of the state, to his quest. My people and I want to be part of it.

“His emergence is a clarion call for all men of goodwill and good conscience to gather together to make the point that Anambra is not for only rich people but for both the rich and the poor.”

Speaking about the 2023 presidential election, Ozoigbo remarked that it is regrettable there is significant distrust among members within the Labour Party.

He stated that it is even worse that, despite all the claims to victory, the Labour Party relied on the same INEC result it had discredited to prove its case in court, and thus faced failure.

Buhari rallies support for Tinubu on second anniversary

Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has hailed his successor, Bola Tinubu, as he marks his second anniversary on May 29, 2025.

In a statement released on his X account yesterday, signed by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari urged Nigerians to remain optimistic about the future, saying citizens’ expectations from the government should not be heavy.

He rallied support for the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress government, explaining that reforms would achieve success gradually, not overnight.

Buhari warned that necessary reforms and desired changes must not fall victim to politics.

He expressed support for the ongoing efforts by the Tinubu administration to rein in poverty and inflation, which he said have hit the poorest families the hardest.

However he added that the task of reducing poverty and inflation must not be left only for the government.

“The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can.

“Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy.

“I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care,” Buhari said.

Nigerians dump NNPCL filling stations over petrol price

Nigerians have dumped the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited retail outlets over high prices of premium motor spirits.

Our correspondent who went round major NNPCL retail outlets in Abuja observed low patronage by motorists in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

This was also the case for NNPCL retail outlets along Kubwa Expressway and those in Wuse Zone 4 and 6, which dispense fuel at N910 per litre.

Musa Abdullahi, a motorist in Abuja, said he preferred to buy at other filling stations with fuel prices below N910 per litre.

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chinedu Ukadike, said commuters prefer to patronise filling stations with competitive prices that is why patronage dropped in NNPCL.

“The disparity in prices in filling stations is due to the deregulation of the downstream sector. Filling stations now compete not only because of their brand but also their prices. Before now NNPCL filling stations had queues because of their prices but the reverse is the case today,” he told our reporter exclusively.

The reports had it that after Dangote Refinery announced a fresh petrol price template last week, partners and markets such as MRS, AP Ardova, Optima, Bova, and others dropped their fuel price by 15 to N895 per litre from N910.

The reports also said other petrol marketers, such as Salbas and AA Rano in Abuja, had reduced their petrol price from N910 per litre to N900 as of Tuesday. Similarly, others, fuel marketers previously dispensing fuel at N917 per litre in Abuja, have reduced to N910 to remain attractive to patronage.

However, NNPCL retail outlets had to hold on to 910 litres. The development comes as NNPCL Saturday shut down its Port Harcourt Refinery for maintenance.

Senate passes Rivers 2025 budget for second reading

The Nigerian Senate, yesterday passed the Rivers State 2025 budget for second reading.

The budget which stood at N1,480,662592,442 trillion was passed for second reading after it was read by the Senate Leader, Senator Michael Bamidele Opeyemi.

Opeyemi said the Senate has since assumed the powers of legislating for Rivers State having been under the State of Emergency.

In his contribution, Senator Solomon Adeola Olamilekan said, there was a need for the budget to be legislated immediately so that the people of Rivers could feel the presence of government.

He said, “Mr President, I don’t know under what topic this document is christened but I could see it is about a budget of the state of emergency.

I hereby support that the budget be passed for second reading so that the people of Rivers can feel the presence of government.

In absence of opposition to the bill, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio passed the budget through voice vote and referred it to the Ad-hoc Committee on overseeing Rivers State of Emergency

US suspends new student visa interviews over social media vetting policy

THE United States (US) government has temporarily suspended scheduling of new interviews for student and exchange visas, a move that may impact thousands of Nigerian students hoping to study in America.

According to a report by Politico, the decision is part of a wider plan by the US to expand its social media screening and vetting procedures for prospective students.

Politico reported that a diplomatic cable from the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, instructed consular sections to halt new appointments for F, M, and J visas until further notice.

However, the cable clarified that interviews already booked would proceed as scheduled, meaning students with existing appointments are not affected.

The cable, dated Tuesday, May 27, reads: “Effective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, consular sections should not add any additional student or exchange visitor (F, M and J) visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued.”

This development came as a major blow to Nigerian students, who make up a significant portion of international students in the US.  Nigeria ranks as Africa’s leading source of international students and 7th globally.

According to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, Nigerian student enrollment at US colleges and universities rose to 20,029 in the 2023/2024 academic year, marking a 13.5 per cent increase from the previous year.

The sudden halt in visa processing followed earlier signals from Rubio, who in March, 2025, had expressed concerns about students allegedly using American universities for activism instead of academics.

The US Secretary of State cited the case of Rümeysa Öztürk, a Tufts University doctoral student, who was arrested and later released on bail after writing an op-ed in support of Gazans during the Israel-Hamas conflict.

This development was also on the heels of the US government revoking Harvard rights to enrol foreign students effective immediately.

The President Donald Trump’s administration, through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), had on Thursday, May 22, accused Harvard of refusing to comply with requests for records involving nonimmigrant students, ranging from disciplinary records to protest-related footage spanning the past five years.

The DHS Secretary, Kristi Noem, alleged that Harvard had created an unsafe campus environment that was hostile to Jewish students, promoted pro-Hamas sympathies, and enforced racist diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.

She stressed that as a result, the university had forfeited the privilege of enrolling international students.

Army identifies foreign mercenaries training Boko Haram, ISWAP fighters; arrests four Pakistanis

The Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdusalam Abubakar, has revealed that foreign mercenaries infiltrating the northeast region have intensified the threat posed by terrorist groups such as the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram.

Speaking in Maiduguri, Major General Abubakar explained that the involvement of these mercenaries has enabled terrorist groups to adopt more sophisticated tactics, including the use of drones for surveillance and attacks, the manufacturing of advanced improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and the setting of traps targeting military personnel.

He stated, “The infiltration of foreign mercenaries in the joint operations area has significantly escalated the threat posed by terrorist groups like ISWAP and JAS.”

He also disclosed the recent arrest of four Pakistani nationals suspected of arms trafficking with terrorists, adding, “The foreign mercenaries facilitate tactical and strategic training for these terrorists.”

Major General Abubakar further noted an increasing level of coordination among terrorist networks, which has resulted in higher casualties and substantial equipment losses for government forces.

“The growing influence of these mercenaries is evident in the terrorists’ increasing coordinated assets, resulting in higher casualties among troops and greater equipment losses,” he said.

He called for an urgent and coordinated response, emphasizing the need for intensified intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance efforts, as well as strengthened cooperation between Nigeria and neighboring countries to disrupt cross-border support networks.

“The Boko Haram and Islamic State West African Province terrorists are not just waging war against the armed forces—they are waging war against Nigeria,” Abubakar said.

Praising the commitment of Nigerian troops operating under challenging conditions, he urged greater national recognition and support for their efforts.

“Our troops are deployed across various locations, enduring harsh weather conditions that can become very cold at night,” he said.

“There are heroes among them, and we must appreciate them, especially through the media. These are Nigerians defending our nation.

“When we understand that this conflict is not just between terrorists and the armed forces but against Nigeria as a whole, and when we present a united front, we will achieve meaningful progress.”

PDP Secretaryship crisis: I won’t resign – Anyanwu declares

…accuses Govs Makinde, Mbah of coup plot

The National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has vowed not to resign from his position despite pressure from some party leaders.

He accused Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Peter Mbah of Enugu State of leading a coordinated plot to remove him before the expiration of his tenure.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja yesterday, Anyanwu described the turmoil as politically motivated and without constitutional justification.

“There is no vacancy in the office of the National Secretary of the PDP. I remain the substantive National Secretary whose tenure runs until December 2025,” he said.

Anyanwu explained that he only took a leave of absence from office to contest the 2023 governorship election in Imo State and had formally notified the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of his decision.

“I wrote to the party and to INEC before proceeding on leave. That letter was acknowledged. My deputy only acted on my behalf. At no time did I resign my position,” the erstwhile Senator explained.

He insisted that the position of National Secretary is zoned to the South, and specifically micro-zoned to the South-East, with Imo State as the designated source of nomination.

He questioned why a replacement is being pushed from Enugu State.

“If the zoning principle is to be respected, any replacement must come from Imo State, not Enugu. Governor Mbah is pushing for a replacement that violates the PDP’s own zoning formula,” Anyanwu stated.

He alleged that Hon. Ali Odefa, a former South-East National Vice Chairman, was behind the campaign against him, using false information to mislead Governor Mbah and others.

The party leader stated that Odefa had been expelled and no longer had any legal standing within the party.

“Odefa’s tenure expired in March. He was expelled from the party and the High Court confirmed it. He has no business attending or convening any PDP meeting,” he explained.

Citing a High Court judgment from January 26, 2025, Anyanwu emphasized the legal weight of the decision, which he said rendered any action taken by Odefa or his allies illegal and invalid.

He said, “The judgment states clearly that any meeting presided over or attended by Ali Odefa is infected with the virus of fundamental illegality and cannot stand. That ruling has not been appealed. It remains binding and enforceable.”

Anyanwu further alleged that Governors Makinde and Mbah conspired to insert Mr. Sunday Ude-Okoye into the position of Secretary through improper channels, including manipulating party staff and using unauthorized meeting venues.

According to him, “how can governors gang up to insert someone as Secretary? This is the height of impunity. Staff were sponsored, and processes were bypassed.”

Anyanwu dismissed rumours of his alleged allegiance to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, insisting that their friendship has never interfered with his loyalty to the PDP.

“I can never deny my friend. After political offices, life continues. I’m not the type to sacrifice loyalty for convenience,” he said.

He also rejected reports of an impending coalition or merger involving the PDP, asserting that the party is not part of any alliance talks.

“There is no coalition. PDP is not merging with anyone. Other parties can join us if they like, but we are not surrendering our identity,” Anyanwu declared.

The PDP secretary further expressed frustration over internal sabotage during the last governorship election, alleging that some party leaders withheld support despite his longstanding commitment to the party.

He explained, “I contested that election without a kobo from the party. None of those now calling for my resignation helped me. Yet they want me out?”

Anyanwu warned that any action aimed at removing him could legally invalidate all PDP activities conducted under his watch since November 2023, including congresses and candidate nominations

“If my office is nullified, then every action I’ve taken, every congress and nomination, is also null and void. That means PDP has no structure nationwide,” he cautioned.

Anyanwu appealed for calm and unity ahead of the party’s next convention, urging leaders to put aside personal ambition for the collective good of the PDP.

He said, “Let us go in peace. We came into this as a family. Let’s not destroy the house because of selfish interests.”

PDP crises: Wike is a disaster, he should be removed – Sule Lamido

Former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido has vowed to boycott all PDP meetings until Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and other alleged party impostors are removed.

Lamido was absent from the PDP National Executive Council, NEC, meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.

It would be recalled that the NEC held its meeting on Tuesday to address key issues facing the opposition party.

In an interview with journalists on Tuesday, Lamido stated that Wike’s continued presence in the PDP poses a threat to the party’s peace and stability.

According to him, “Wike is a disaster and a product of the PDP, the party that made him important. But now, he aims to ruin it,” Lamido said.

“I refuse to attend PDP meetings when they have fake members there. I am still a loyal member, but I won’t dignify this nonsense.”

Lamido also criticized the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, for sealing the PDP national secretariat, a move he attributed to Wike.

“Shutting down the PDP secretariat, the very institution that aided your political career, is un-African, un-Nigerian, and a huge abuse of power,” he said.

“Wike’s mindset is flawed; he lacks the cultural and moral foundation that our political tradition requires.”

Lamido also criticized the PDP’s National Working Committee, NWC, for failing to expel Wike and others allegedly involved in anti-party activities.

“What is the NWC afraid of exactly?” he asked.

“Why hasn’t Wike been kicked out? Why is former Governor of Benue, Samuel Ortom, still holding a position in the Board of Trustees after openly endorsing Tinubu?

“These are fundamental breaches. If this party is to survive, it must cleanse itself.”

Lamido praised the President for giving defaulters a 14-day ultimatum to pay outstanding FCT ground rents.

He alleged that Wike ordered the closure of the PDP headquarters in order to gain favour with Tinubu, stating that the President will eventually abandon him for his insincerity.

“Ironically, the man Wike is trying to impress was the one who called him to order. That tells you everything,” Lamido said.

“Even Tinubu is beginning to see that Wike is unreliable, lacking tradition and pedigree. And I assure you, he will soon abandon him too.”

Lamido also addressed concerns about Nigeria sliding into a one-party state, calling it “state-sponsored sabotage.”

The PDP has been struggling with internal conflicts since 2022.

Natasha’s lawyers allege bias over unaddressed petitions

The legal team representing Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan yesterday raised the alarm over what it described as a disturbing pattern of selective justice, following the Federal Government’s decision to file criminal charges against her despite multiple unresolved petitions she lodged earlier this year.

In a statement released by her counsel, Uju Nwoduwu, the team outlined 12 petitions submitted by the senator between March and May 2025.

The petitions reportedly detail allegations including cyberstalking, defamation, threats to life, and an alleged assassination attempt.

According to the legal team, none of these complaints have been acted upon by the Nigeria Police Force or any relevant security agency.

“There is a legitimate public expectation that law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies uphold the principles of fairness, due process, and equal justice—regardless of who is involved,” the statement said.

The lawyers further expressed concern that while Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petitions remain unattended, counter-allegations filed by those she accused—including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello—have been swiftly pursued, leading to criminal charges against her.

“This glaring disparity raises serious concerns about a biased and uneven application of justice,” the statement continued.

Some of the petitions, they added, involve high-ranking officials and incidents as grave as the abduction and attempted assassination of a protocol officer.

Though currently abroad on personal engagements, Akpoti-Uduaghan has acknowledged receipt of official communication regarding the charges and has pledged to make herself available for arraignment as soon as a date is set.

“She remains resolute in her commitment to due process,” the legal team affirmed, while also thanking members of the public who have voiced concern over what they called “an extraordinarily questionable criminal charge.”

The statement concluded with a renewed appeal for impartial investigations into all outstanding petitions and a call for justice to be applied equally, without fear or favour.

Emefiele appeals final forfeiture order of 753 housing units estate

Former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has petitioned the Court of Appeal in Abuja to overturn a judgment granting the government full control of a substantial estate in Abuja comprising 753 housing units.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had earlier obtained a court order to seize the estate, situated in the Lokogoma district of Abuja.

Initially, the estate was linked to another unnamed former government official. However, Emefiele, through his legal representative A.M. Kotoye, contended that he ought to have been involved in the proceedings, as he holds an interest in the property. He is now seeking the Appeal Court’s reversal of the lower court’s ruling.

“I was unaware of the forfeiture,” Emefiele asserted.

He informed the court that the EFCC published the interim forfeiture notice in an obscure section of a newspaper, making it difficult to detect.

Additionally, Emefiele explained that he was simultaneously managing three criminal cases in both Abuja and Lagos, which hindered his ability to notice the publication.

He further accused the EFCC of deliberately concealing the forfeiture case from him, despite their ongoing engagement with him on other charges.

The trial court, however, dismissed his claim, ruling that the EFCC had followed due process and that the newspaper notice was sufficient.

The judge declared that the notice “could not reasonably be described as hidden.”

Dissatisfied, Emefiele lodged an appeal on April 30, 2025, requesting the Court of Appeal to reverse the judgment delivered on April 28, 2025; annul the interim and final forfeiture orders dated November 1 and 2 December 2024 respectively; and grant his application filed on January 28, 2025.

He argued that the trial court had misconstrued his application and erroneously dismissed it without proper consideration of critical facts, asserting that the orders were founded on “hearsay, suspicion, and no proper evidence.”

Emefiele also maintained that he possessed both legal and equitable interests in the estate, despite the court’s assertion that he failed to provide proof of ownership.

“The entire ruling is a miscarriage of justice,” Emefiele declared.

He added, “The failure of the trial judge to properly evaluate the affidavit and documents before him is perverse and has caused a miscarriage of justice.

“The orders were made in breach of the 1999 Constitution and are therefore null and void.”

Meanwhile, Emefiele’s legal team has written to the Minister of Housing, urging the government to halt all plans to sell the estate until the appeal is resolved.

“We are aware that the properties may soon be sold to the public. We have already served the EFCC with a notice of appeal and an injunction,” the letter stated.

The federal government had recently announced intentions to auction the estate to low- and middle-income Nigerians.

Enugu state govt orders demolition of building used for kidnapping, organ harvesting, ritual murder

  • 13-year-old girl rescued
  • Prime suspect flees, accomplice arrested by police

By Chris Anucha

Enugu state governor, Peter Mbah, has ordered the demolition of building belonging to a fleeing native doctor, used for kidnappings, organ harvesting and ritual-related killings. The native doctor’s name was given as “Ezeani”.

However, his accomplice was not that lucky, as he is presently cooling his heels in the net of the Nigeria Police, helping them in their investigation.

Children’s Day: Peter Obi urges better care for Nigerian children

On the occasion of Children’s Day, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party(LP), in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians, especially leaders, to prioritise the welfare and future of the country’s children, whom he described as “the heartbeat of our nation and the bearer of our collective hopes and dreams.”

In a statement released yesterday, Obi emphasised the need for urgent attention to the challenges faced by Nigerian children.

“Days like this offer us the opportunity to appreciate the immense potential of our children, who represent the hope of a brighter tomorrow in our nation if only we care for them today,” he said.

According to Obi, Nigerian children deserve “a nation that prioritises their well-being, education, safety, and future.”

Highlighting the demographic significance of children in Nigeria, Obi cited a 2023 UNICEF report estimating that over 110 million people under the age of 18 live in the country, representing a large proportion of Nigeria’s population.

“Such high numbers of young people in Nigeria should challenge us, as leaders, to commit wholeheartedly to investing in the future of the children. Their future is the future of the nation,” he stated.

Despite their potential, Obi pointed out that many Nigerian children face harsh realities from birth.

“Nigeria today is among the nations with the highest infant mortality rates in the world,” he said.

He also referenced a 2024 UNICEF report revealing that around 11 million Nigerian children suffer from severe food poverty, with one in four children under five stunted due to malnutrition, especially in rural and remote areas.

The former vice presidential candidate also drew attention to the education crisis in the country, where over 18 million children are currently out of school   “among the highest in the world.”

Obi described this as “a deep national wound,” stressing that “each out-of-school child represents a dream deferred, a future endangered, and a country that is failing to uphold its most sacred responsibility.”

He lamented that while many children learn on the streets, schools remain underfunded, unsafe, or inaccessible.

Obi further criticised the state of healthcare for children, stating that “primary healthcare that should cater to the basic healthcare needs of our children is practically non-existent.”

Obi also raised concerns about insecurity affecting children.

“Violence, kidnapping, and abuse have forced thousands of children to flee their homes, live in fear, or grow up in regions where dreams are stifled by conflict,” he said.

Quoting a 2022 report from the National Bureau of Statistics, Obi said 46.5% of children aged 5-14 were engaged in child labour, describing this as “heartbreaking to see the future of our children jeopardised when they should be nurtured.”

Despite the many challenges, Obi acknowledged the resilience and talent of Nigerian children, urging Nigerians to support and encourage them.

“Their dreams are valid and we must invest in their future, our future!” he declared.

Obi reaffirmed his commitment and promised to work toward a Nigeria “where every Nigerian child can feel secure, grow in peace, enjoy good access to education and health and have the enabling environment to pursue their dreams and contribute productively to societal development.”

He emphasised the importance of building “a nation where no child is left behind and where the child of a nobody can become somebody through hard work and productivity.”

“We will continue to fight for a Nigeria where you can dream freely, learn safely, and rise boldly. That is the country we must build, and we owe you nothing less,” Obi added.

‘Now we know Wike has boss’, Dele Momodu hails Tinubu for stopping Abuja property sealing

Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), chieftain, Dele Momodu, has applauded President Bola Tinubu for halting the sealing of properties in Abuja over unpaid ground rent, a move he described as proof that Tinubu is firmly in control of his administration.

The Federal Capital Territory Authority, under the supervision of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, had on Monday, May 26, sealed several business premises in Abuja, including banks, filling stations, the Federal Inland Revenue Service office, and notably, the national secretariat of the PDP.

The action was reportedly due to unpaid ground rents amounting to billions of Naira.

However, following widespread public backlash and criticism from affected property owners, President Tinubu ordered a temporary suspension of the enforcement.

He also gave all defaulters a 14-day grace period to settle their debts.

Reacting via Instagram, Momodu praised Tinubu for stepping in and described the decision as a significant check on what he called Wike’s excesses.

‘’THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TINUBU, Your Excellency, good evening, sir.

I have just read the news here in America that you have stepped into the matter of your cantankerous Minister of FCT, MR NYESOM WIKE who sealed the National Secretariat of the PDP, the biggest rival of your ruling party, APC, and properties of other defaulters in Abuja earlier today.

“While no one should condone non-compliance of government obligations, government must always restrain itself from vindictive outbursts such as that of Nigeria’s most querulous politician who I’m sure is fast becoming a liability to your government.

The decision to stop Wike today achieved several points in your favour.

Momodu criticised Wike’s approach as vindictive and disruptive, accusing the FCT Minister of wielding power as though he were not answerable to anyone.

The PDP stalwart also used the opportunity to call on President Tinubu to rein in Wike’s political activities in Rivers State, where Wike has been locked in a prolonged power struggle with Governor Sim Fubara.

He added, “We used to think we have two presidents in Nigeria, TINUBU and WIKE. Now, we know WIKE has a boss who can checkmate his excesses.

How I wished you had stopped his reckless disruption and distraction of the SIM FUBARA government in Rivers State and saved the hapless people from this unfortunate contraption called emergency rule.

“Nigerians are currently going through so much hardship and pain, and you need to rescue them from WIKE’s additional burden and insults. WIKE’s assignments are far smaller than that of Minister DAVE UMAHI, yet the man is so humble while WIKE subjects Nigerians to his tautological press conferences as if he’s running his own Federal government and not under anyone’s control.

“Sir, there can’t be two captains in one ship, and I hope WIKE got that message loud and clear from your powerful intervention today.”

Nigeria will have Emperor as President if PDP crumbles – Sule Lamido

Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, says Nigeria would have an emperor as President if the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), collapses.

Lamido, a founding member of the PDP, said this yesterday.

He maintained that the PDP is an integral part of Nigeria’s democratic history, adding that the continued existence of the party is tied to the country’s survival.

“If the PDP collapses, Nigeria will collapse. Where there is no opposition, then there will be an emperor. When the party collapses, then you have an emperor all over Nigeria, and all emperors are destroyed by their greed.

“The PDP is Nigeria’s history in the last 25 years, therefore, look at the bigger picture. If the party collapses, it is Nigeria’s history which collapses,” he said.

According to the ex-foreign affairs minister, if the PDP hadn’t restored Nigeria’s democracy in 1999, there was no way ex-military head of state Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), would have taken over power as President in May 2015.

He stated further that without the PDP laying the foundation for Nigeria’s democracy in the Fourth Republic, incumbent ex-Lagos governor Bola Tinubu wouldn’t have taken over from his party man, Buhari, in May 2023.

Lamido reiterated that Tinubu needs the PDP as a focal opposition party to keep him in check.

“More than anybody, Tinubu needs PDP to be chasing him, to be on his toes, but when it collapses, nobody will be chasing him; he will be chasing himself,” he added.
