WAEC to release 2025 May\ June exam results August 4

All is set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to release the results of its 2025 May\ June secondary school certificate examination (WASSCE) on or before Thursday, August 4.
The council noted that it had just finished marking the candidates’ scripts and would release the results within the said period.
The Head of National Office of WAEC Nigeria, Dr Amos Dangut, made this known on Sunday in a statement issued and made available to newsmen in Lagos by the head of Public Affairs Unit of the organisation, MrsMoyosolaAdesina.
The statement was a reaction of WAEC to refute a viral claim by a section of social media platforms that WAEC had cancelled all the papers written during the examination.
The organisation described the media report as fake news, noting that it did not know the purported press statement or any other information claimed to be in it.
According to WAEC, “Our attention has been drawn to a press statement alleging the cancellation of all the papers written during the just concluded WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025. According to the press statement dated Saturday, July 19th, 2025, being circulated on social media platforms, the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with WAEC, had cancelled the said examination due to widespread examination malpractice, coordinated leakage of question papers, and unauthorised digital dissemination of exam materials.
“The WAEC management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the Council. The said examination has not been cancelled.
“Though the source of that information cannot be ascertained, the Council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the Council to disrepute to cause confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination.
“As a matter of fact, the marking scripts for the said examination have just been concluded, and results will be released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.
“So, the Council would like to use this opportunity to inform the general public and all stakeholders that all information from the Council is disseminated via our official and verified social media handles, as well as accredited media platforms across the country.
“Similarly, all press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council on behalf of the Head of National Office.
“We, therefore, urge our stakeholders and the general public to disregard the said publication.”

2027: S/East group vows to ensure re-election of Tinubu

A group, the South East Renewed Hope Agenda, SERHA, has vowed to mobilise voters in the South East to vote massively for President Bola Tinubu to ensure his re-election in 2027.
National coordinator of SERHA, BelusochukwuEnwere, said at the inauguration of the Anambra State branch of the group in Awka, explained that the objective of the group is to promote President Tinubu’s vision at the grassroots level in the South East.
He said, “We have seen a lot of people who will work with us in Anambra State. As ambassadors of the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are working to ensure the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
“We have carried out empowerment programmes in the zone to showcase the positive initiatives of President Tinubu in the South East through the South East Development Commission.
“His administration is committed to improving the lives of the people of South East to enable them to enjoy the benefits of democracy through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Enwere said that while there is still much work to be done to meet the people’s expectations, President Tinubu’s determination to lead Nigeria to greatness is evident.
The secretary of the group, Professor Frank Anaeto, explained that the group is not a political party, but a movement and a pressure group established in the six geopolitical zones of the country, mainly to ensure continuity of the President.
According to him, no single person owns the group, assuring that nobody will hijack it.
“We want people who are non-partisan to join the group and be empowered. We have got the share of the South East and we have already been to Ebonyi, Enugu and Abia states, and we are now in Anambra”, he said.
Anaeto urged the people of the South East to emphasise what will unite them, rather than what will divide them.
“We are not interested in how much money you have or your family background or your position in any political party. We should listen to diverse opinions to enable us to make informed decisions in 2027”, he stated..
In his speech, the Anambra State coordinator of SERHA, Comrade ChukwudumMuonagolu, urged the people of the state not to be left behind in the journey of President Tinubu to improve the welfare of Nigerians.
He listed some of the president’s achievements to include the establishment of youth empowerment through digital innovation that has trained 500,000 youths to create sustainable employment opportunities and develop human capital through skills acquisition.
During the inauguration, over 1000 people were empowered with cash and other items.

FG, Govs crushing dissent, stealing workers’ sweat – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has accused the Federal Government and state governors of systematically crushing dissent, weakening democratic institutions, and illegally seizing workers’ contributions, which it described as “stealing workers’ sweat.”
President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, who spoke during the opening ceremony of the 21st Rain School of the NLC, held yesterday in Uyo, AkwaIbom State, said “Nigeria is on the brink of tyranny! The democratic space the very arena where citizens, especially the working class, exercise their rights to free speech, assembly, and participation in governance is under siege.”
He described the ongoing clampdown on civic freedoms and union activities as a calculated effort to silence the voices of Nigerian workers ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Governance has been abandoned for 2027 politicking,” he said. “Leaders who should be working to alleviate suffering are instead consumed by power games, leaving workers and ordinary Nigerians to bear the brunt of economic hardship and mounting insecurity — all imposed by their policies.”

I didn’t turn down Tinubu’s appointment – Mohammed Babangida

The first son of former Military President, Mohammed Babangida, has described as “fake” the letter circulating in social media that he rejected the offer to serve as Board Chairman of Bank of Agriculture (BOA).

Reacting to the fake letter, Alhaji Mahmud Abdullahi, who is one of the Media aides to Mohammed Babangida described the letter in circulation as “fake” and concocted from from disgruntled elements.

“Mohammed Babangida did not reject the appointment. The letter circulating is fake. Infact, the signature is not that of Mohammed Babangida, while the telephone lines quoted are not his.

“We wish to clarify that Mohammed has gratefully accepted the appointment as Chairman of the Bank of Agriculture as announced by the federal government and therefore extends his sincere appreciation to President Tinubu for the trust and confidence bestowed upon him.

“We also want to assure the public that those spreading these falsehoods will be thoroughly investigated and brought to justice. We remain committed to transparency, accountability, and fostering unity within our nation,” Mahmud declared.

It will be recalled that Mohammed Babangida’s appointment was among several strategic appointments approved by President Tinubu last week to strengthen leadership across key government institutions.

Scores of members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Kogi State have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in a show of support for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The senator reaffirmed her resolve to deepen the party’s reach, adding, “My responsibility is to strengthen the PDP and bring more people into our fold.”

She expressed hope that Nigeria’s political system would get to a point where each party defines its beliefs, stressing that when ideology fails, parties turn to violence and intimidation in order to get what they want.

Miyetti Allah, Imo community resolve to end destruction, pay compensation

The leadership of Miyetti Allah in Imo State and the people of Amulu/Ihitte Mbieri Community in Mbaitoli Council Area have resolved to put a stop to all forms of destruction, invasions, and other activities of cattle herders in the area.

The two parties reached the resolution during a meeting with the Divisional Police Officer of Mbaitoli Police Division, Mr Daniel Wetben, held at the division’s headquarters on Monday.

While the people of Amulu/Ihitte Mbieri Community agreed not to be hostile towards the Fulani herders but to continue to allow them to carry out their business in an atmosphere of peace devoid of destruction or any form of trouble, the Chairman of Miyetti Allah in Imo State, Muhammad Shuibu, agreed to maintain peace as long as they are allowed to carry out their day-to-day cattle rearing business in the communities.

The leader of Miyetti Allah also assured the community that compensation would be paid to farmers whose crops were destroyed.

Earlier in his address, the DPO of Mbaitoli Police Division, Mr Daniel Wetben, said the meeting was convened in response to recent incidents of destruction allegedly caused by Fulani cattle herders in Amulu/Ihitte Mbieri Community.

He explained that conflicts between Fulani herders and farmers had been ongoing in the area, with women visiting his office to lament the loss of their farming efforts.

Briefing the meeting, the President General of Amulu/Ihitte Mbieri Autonomous Community, Mr Egejuru Austine, stated that his people had, on two occasions, gone on rescue missions to protect farm crops from being destroyed by grazing cattle.

During the rescue operations, they met with the herders and even exchanged phone numbers for easier communication.

The PG pointed out that since the arrival of the herders in the community, the residents had shown acceptance by allocating them areas to stay and graze peacefully without trouble.

However, he expressed regret that the herders later changed their behaviour and began destroying and uprooting crops—a development the community could no longer tolerate.

He added that the situation had become so tense that women and other farmers were now afraid to go to their farms for fear of insecurity.

The PG said he had invited the DPO following his earlier report to the Imo State Commissioner of Police, and also confirmed that he had notified the Deputy Governor of the State about the situation.

He lamented that the destruction affected a large expanse of land and forced women to uproot cassava that had not matured.

He also narrated how the herders had once invaded a building, occupied it with their cattle, and refused to vacate until community members intervened after repeated alarms from neighbours.

Austine recalled a similar incident in the past, which was resolved only after the DPO and his team stepped in and drove the herders away.

He noted that most of the affected farmers were widows who had now lost everything.

While affirming that he had made efforts to approach the matter civilly, he insisted that such destruction by the Fulani cattle herders must stop.

Speaking, the Chairman of Miyetti Allah in Imo State, Muhammad Shuibu, asked for forgiveness over what had transpired so far and condemned the destruction caused by the Fulani cattle herders.

He, on behalf of the Fulani cattle herders, pleaded with the community leaders to continue to maintain peace.

According to him, he would not want to see anything that could lead to further problems between the herders and the community.

The chairman assured the community of his willingness to work with its leaders to resolve the issue amicably to ensure lasting peace in the area.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Northern Affairs, Hon. Sulaiman Ibrahim Sulaiman, speaking on behalf of the Hausa and Fulani communities, apologised for the destruction caused by the Fulani cattle herders.

He assured that such an unfortunate incident would not happen again, adding that his office would take the necessary steps to ensure the community remains peaceful and free from further invasions and destruction.

He called for a peaceful resolution, insisting that such behaviour must not be repeated.

A photograph was taken at the end of the reconciliation meeting, showing the PG of Amulu/Ihitte Mbieri Community, Mr Egejuru Austine, alongside some community leaders, the DPO of Mbaitoli Police Division, Mr Daniel Wetben, the SA to the Governor on Northern Affairs, Hon. Sulaiman Ibrahim Sulaiman, the Chairman of Miyetti Allah, Muhammad Shuibu, and other Fulani representatives.

Imo Police arrests 2785 suspects, rescues 58 kidnap victims, 42 stolen children

By Jude Onyenedogha

The Imo State Police Command said it has recorded tremendous successes in its intensified fight against violent crimes and criminal syndicates  across the state in the  past six months, as it arrested a total of 2785 criminal suspects, rescued 58 kidnap victims and 42 stolen children.

This was contained in a press statement by the Command’s public relations officer, Henry Okoye, made available to The Statesman in Owerri.

According to the statement, over the past six months, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, alongside other Divisions and Formations have arrested  2,785 suspects for serious offences, including kidnapping, terrorism, murder, armed robbery, cultism, child trafficking, among others.

It disclosed that these operations also resulted in the rescue of 58 kidnap victims and 42 stolen children, many of whom have been joyfully reunited with their families.

The statement added that investigation into the cases resulted in the recovery of a large cache of arms, ammunition and explosives, including two GPMG, 14 AK-47s, 20 pump-action guns, four fabricated rocket launchers, seven gas-cylinder explosives, locally made hand grenades, assorted rounds of live ammunition, cartridges, Biafran flags, criminal charms, among others.

“Among the key suspects arrested are; AmechiOnyebuchi (38), OziomaIhedoro (39), Cyprian Ikpegbunam (50), and UchennaOpara (30)—notorious members of the proscribed IPOB/ESN. These individuals were responsible for multiple attacks on security formations and public infrastructure in Njaba LGA.

“Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, in collaboration with other tactical teams, raided an IPOB/ESN camp in Njaba, arrested the suspects, and recovered high-grade weapons and explosives. During interrogation, they confessed to the kidnap and murder of Emmanuel Oguzie, allegedly on the orders of a wanted ESN commander known as Asari.

Further, the statement disclosed that in a separate, but related case, two suspected kidnappers, UcheNwachukwu (24) and ChinonsoOzirim (32), were arrested for abducting AnayoIwuoha in his Compound at Akabo on June 20, 2025. The  syndicate held the victim at ChinonsoOzirim’s residence, collecting a ₦2.2 million ransom before a joint operation by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and local vigilantes led to his rescue and the arrest of the suspects, adding that manhunt was ongoing for their fleeing accomplices.

“Also recently apprehended is Wisdom ChinazaekpereOgbonna (36) of Orlu LGA, a notorious member of the Vikings Confraternity. “He was recently apprehended by operatives of Orlu Division for burglary and stealing, but upon further profiling and transfer to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, he was identified as one of the cultists involved in the heinous murder”.

The statement concluded by disclosing that all the suspects will be arraigned in court upon completion of investigation.

The deputy governor also reminded them of the importance of political participation, saying, “remember, politics and development go hand in hand, so, do not keep off from political participation, because, if we don’t determine who governs us, other people will do it without our consent and their decision will determine the level of development we benefit from the government.

“All we owe the governor is our support and prayers. So, do not relent in your support for the 3-R Shared Prosperity Administration”, the deputy governor advised the pensioners.

She also called on the pensioners to help in building strong family institution, by living up to their family responsibilities, instilling moral discipline in their children and other young ones.

The Deputy Governor hinted that the construction of the Nwaorieubi – Ukwuorji road will commence soon, emphasising that work will start immediately the mopping up of the remnants of insecurity in the area is completed, urging the people to exercise more patience and hope.

The leader of the  delegation and  Chairman of the Umunoha Pensioners, Mr. Samuel Osuafor, in his earlier address thanked the deputy governor for the audience, while showering praises on Governor Hope Uzodimma for his good governance.

Mr. Osuafor made particular emphasis on the Governor’s prompt payment of pensions and gratuities, especially, the  clearing of backlog of pension and gratuity arrears, dating back to about 20 years.

He consequently expressed the innermost gratitude of Imo pensioners, especially those from Umunoha/Azara ward.

‘I was not beaten”, says Ngor Okpala Female Councillor

..Exonerates LG Chairperson

Hon. Celestina Opara,  Councillor representing Ihitte/Ngor/ Umukabia ward at Ngor Okpala Legislative Council has unequivocally denied being harassed, dragged nor beaten up by security or anybody at Ngor Okpala Council headquarters, describing the report  that she was beaten as not only false and misleading  but generated by disgruntled oppositions to distract the council chairman who is bent on ensuring the area is provided with developmental projects.

It would be recalled that there was a false media report alleging that the  chairperson of Ngor Okpala Local Government Area ordered security at the council headquarters Umuneke to beat up the only female serving councillor in the area

In an interview,  the said only serving female councillor, Hon. CelestinaOpara representing Ihitte/ Ngor/ Umukabia ward  told a team of investigative journalists that there was no time she was embarrassed, harassed or beaten at the council, describing it as an embarrassment  the false  report alleging she was beaten by security men on the instruction of Ngor Okpala local government chairperson.

In her words,’ I was not beaten. By the way why and when was I beaten? It was a concocted report by a few political distractors to cast aspersion and disrepute on the towering personality of our amiable chairperson Hon. Chief Mrs Chika Ibekwe

She continued,’ Ngor Okpala Legislative Council has never witnessed a rowdy session, let alone a councillor been descended on by the council  security men.

‘Though  legislative  and executive councils are two different organs of government, Ngor Okpala Council lawmakers and the executive headed by the chairperson, Hon Chief Mrs Chika Ibekwe have always maintained mutual respect and cooperation to serve the generality of Ngor Okpala people.

‘Hon. Chief Mrs Chika Ibekwe is a good woman who treats us as her children. Honestly, this false media report is aimed at putting a knife into what binds us together. The report is mischievous.

Furthering the alleged beaten, the  female councillor said she was not contacted for her side before the fake report went to the press, urging the general public to disregard the misleading and malicious report which she said must be sponsored by some disgruntled elements.

‘Even the reporter did not hear from me to verify before going to the press. That is to say the report was up to something. The executive and legislative councils are working harmoniously to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

According to her the council headquarters is wearing a new look now. Many new buildings have been erected, dilapidated ones renovated, security and solar lights mounted, issue of insecurity is being tackled head-on , rural roads are made motor able, good relationship between the people and chairperson. Ngor Okpala people always come here to appreciate the workaholic chairman.

The female councillor called for the retraction of the publication even as she tasked the newspaper operators in the state on balanced reportage which she described as the Hallmark of journalism profession.

However, it would be recalled that since the Chairperson of Ngor Okpala Local Government Area appointed a nine man caretaker committee to steer the affairs of Obiangwu Development Union, following the failure of stakeholders and leaders to conduct election, the aggrieved  minority group spearheaded by a former Ngor Okpala transition committee chairman and staunch PDP member has continued to unleash unwarranted media attacks on Ngor Okpala Council Chairperson, alluding that she was advancing the interest of the leader of the legislative council who happens to come from Obiangwu.

Imo community in Israel salutes Uzodimma for Concorde hotel renovation

…Commends Tourism  Ministry for effective supervision

By Fredrick Njoku

The Imo People’s Congress, Israel (IPC), a diaspora-based socio-cultural group of Imolites living in Israel, has commended the Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, for the ongoing reconstruction and rehabilitation of the iconic Concorde Hilton in Owerri—formerly known as Concorde Hotel.
Speaking on behalf of the organization, IPC President, Mazi Obinna Kingsley Ike, described the Governor’s intervention as “visionary, timely, and a catalyst for economic rejuvenation in the state.” He noted that the Concorde Hotel, once a crown jewel of the South East, had fallen into disrepair but is now on the path to restoration thanks to the current administration’s bold action. “We had begun engaging potential investors in Israel who were interested in supporting the revitalization of Concorde Hotel. But to our pleasant surprise, His Excellency took the initiative himself. That kind of foresight deserves not just recognition but applause,” Mazi Ike said.
Mazi Ike emphasized that although Imolites in Israel are far from home, their hearts remain closely tied to the progress and prosperity of Imo State. “As citizens living in the diaspora, our minds are constantly on home. The love for our state and heritage never fades. We had genuine concerns over the state of infrastructure in Imo, especially the once-glorious Concorde Hotel. This hotel was a legacy of the revered Governor Sam Mbakwe, and its revival is a matter of pride to every Imolite.”
The group praised Governor Uzodimma for reappointing Barrister Jerry Egemba as the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Hospitality and Culture, describing him as “a tireless, committed technocrat” whose leadership and vision continue to add value to the state’s development efforts. “The Governor made a wise and strategic choice in appointing Barr. Egemba again. He is someone who fits the role perfectly and understands the demands of the ministry. Under his watch, we are seeing tangible results,” the IPC noted.
The forum specifically lauded the Governor’s directive placing the Ministry of Tourism, Hospitality and Culture in charge of supervising the Concorde Hotel’s renovation project. “This is the first time in the history of Imo State that such a significant infrastructure project is being directly overseen by the relevant ministry. It shows seriousness and a clear alignment with the Shared Prosperity vision.”
The IPC expressed appreciation to the Governor for other landmark initiatives in the tourism and cultural sectors, such as the reconstruction of the Imo International Conference Centre (IICC), now renamed the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu Conference Centre, and efforts to immortalize notable cultural icons like Dr. Sam Mbakwe and Engr. Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.
Additionally, the group commended the Governor for his support in organizing the Ahiajoku Lecture Series, scheduled to hold in September 2025, noting the expected economic ripple effect on local businesses, especially vendors, caterers, and service providers. “Events like the Ahiajoku Lecture Series will boost local commerce and create temporary employment for youths. This is how to drive a people-oriented economy,” they stated.
In conclusion, the IPC acknowledged Governor Uzodimma’s impactful road infrastructure projects, including the Owerri-Orlu, Owerri-Okigwe, and Owerri-Mbaise roads, as well as the Assumpta Cathedral Flyover Bridge, describing them as critical arteries for regional connectivity and economic growth

Stolen jewellery: Patience Jonathan ex-aides’ lawyer laments as adjournment hits 42

A legal practitioner, Funmi Adedoyin, has decried the “delayed trial” of some former domestic workers of ex-First Lady Patience Jonathan, who remain in detention at the Okaka Custodial Centre in Bayelsa State over stolen jewellery.

She said the case was recently adjourned twice—on 25 and 26 June—due to the abduction of Justice Ebiyerin Omukoro of the Bayelsa State High Court on 21 June in front of an eatery in Yenagoa, the state capital.

It was reported in April that the case had been adjourned 40 times.

The defendants were arraigned before the court, sitting in Yenagoa, in 2019.

They were accused of stealing seven gold bangles and other pieces of jewellery, five Samsung air conditioners, two sets of upholstered chairs, and six Samsung flat-screen televisions, all valued at N200m.

They were also accused of conspiracy to commit murder, felony, armed robbery, burglary, and stealing, among other charges.

Those affected are Williams Alami, Vincent Olabiyi, Ebuka Cosmos, John Dashe, Tamunokuro Abaku, Emmanuel Aginwa, Erema Deborah, Precious Kingsley, Tamunosiki Achese, Sunday Reginald, Vivian Golden, Emeka Benson, Boma Oba, Salomi Wareboka, and Sahabi Lima.

Speaking with newsmen, Adedoyin lamented that the defendants had been languishing in prison for six years.

The lawyer expressed disappointment over the ongoing delays in the trial, emphasising the impact on the defendants’ pursuit of justice.

She noted, “We are not happy about these delays, and that is why we have been doing our best to carry on with the legal advocacy to ensure justice is upheld in the matter.

“We want them to get justice on time, as we have had over 40 adjournments already in the matter. We will continue to support them.”

Adedoyin assured that the group would not back down until justice was served.

She said, “We hope with these advocacies, the case will go on and the people will get justice.”

Speaking about the recent adjournments, Adedoyin stated, “The case has not been going on. The last time it was supposed to come up was 26 and 27 June. The court did not sit because of the matter in Bayelsa State where a judge was kidnapped. It is an act of solidarity. Till now, we have not been able to get a date. In the last two adjournments, the matter did not go on.”

The sister of one of the detainees, Gladys Achese, decried the imprisonment of her sister and the prolonged trial of the defendants.

She said, “We are sad. The case is just dragging. They didn’t go to court throughout last month. Hopefully, if they go this month, they will not go at all in August because there will be a break.

“So, we do not know when the next court session will open. Time is not waiting. We do not know the next approach to take. It is frustrating.”

2025 WASSCE not cancelled – WAEC

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has described as fake and fictitious, a statement credited to the Federal Ministry of Education, FME, that this year’s Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations, SSCE, has been cancelled.

Speaking in a chat with newsmen, the Public Relations Officer, Moyo Adesina, said the statement was not only fictitious, but a figment of the imagination of the purveyors of such news item.

She said the marking of the exam scripts were being  concluded and the results would be made public soon.

She added that the exam body would come out with a full statement on the matter later today.

She called on the public to disregard it.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo pays tribute to late Awujale, hails his legacy of peace, inclusion

…As group attends fidau prayer

The apex Igbo socio-cultural and political organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Ijebu, yesterday, joined thousands of Ijebu indigenes, traditional rulers, and dignitaries to honour the late Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, during the eight-day Fidau prayer held in his memory.

Oba Adetona, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 91, was buried according to Islamic rites at his private residence, Ogbagba Court in Igbeba, Ijebu Ode.

Arriving in vibrant traditional attire, accompanied by drummers and dancers, members of Ohanaeze Ndigbo paid glowing tributes to the revered monarch, describing him as a beloved in-law and a symbol of peace and unity.

Speaking to newsmen at the Otunba Dipo Dina International Stadium, venue of the Fidau prayer, the Onowu Ndigbo of Ijebu Ode, Dr. Udu Chukwu, said the Igbo community enjoyed peace and prosperity throughout the late monarch’s reign.

“I have lived in Ijebu for over 30 years without any problem. Our businesses are thriving, and the environment is peaceful, thanks to the leadership and vision of Kabiyesi,” Chukwu said.

He added that Oba Adetona’s inclusive reign made Ijebuland a welcoming home for all ethnic groups, and the Igbo community would forever cherish his legacy.

He said, “Late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, is our in-law. One of his daughters is married to one of us. The brother is from Nnewi in Anambra State. We are here to honour him as our in-law and as our Oba and landlord in Ijebu.

“Some of us have been in Ijebu Ode for many years. I have been living in Ijebu Ode for well over 30 years. Some of us are in the civil service here. Since living here, we have not had any problems.  The late paramount ruler was a wonderful man. Our business thrives here.”

Meanwhile, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is being awaited for the fidau prayer, which is already three hours behind schedule. As of 3 pm, he was yet to arrive at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, venue of the 8-day Fidau prayer for the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

The security operatives, which consisted of personnel of the Nigerian Army (NA), the Police, the DSS, as well as operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were having a hectic time trying to control the crowd surge as many struggled to enter the venue at the same time.

At a stage, the security operatives resorted to physical assault with whips and sticks to push back the crowd from the two entrances to the stadium.

Fuel price cut: Dangote refinery dumps petrol marketers

Dangote Refinery has dumped petroleum products marketers as its direct fuel and diesel distribution nationwide scheme draws closer.

This came as a letter by the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery to all its strategic partners dated July 13th, 2025, and signed by Dangote’s Group Executive Director-Commercial Operations, Fatima Dangote, showed that the plant has suspended its discounted fuel supply scheme.

The company cited racketeering by petroleum products markets for its action.

Dangote Refinery’s letter partly reads, “DPRP Management is suspending the discounted price offered to partners effective 13th July 2025 and working towards restructuring the scheme.”

It, however, urged petrol marketers to “judiciously explore other incentive/reward schemes.”

However, the development came as the Dangote Refinery is set to commence its direct-to-customers petroleum products distribution scheme from August 15, 2025.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of Dangote Industries has not officially confirmed the development as of filing the report on Thursday.

The retail marketers of Dangote Refinery include MRS Oil, Ardova Plc, Hyde Energy, Optima Energy, Heyden Petroleum, Techno Oil and others.

Earlier, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria had hinted at a plan to adopt Dangote Refinery’s fuel distribution initiative.

However, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria has visibly kicked against Dangote Refinery’s initiative over fear of monopoly and business shutdown.

The reports said that ex-depot and retail prices of petrol dropped recently.

Dangote Refinery reduced its ex-depot price to N820 per litre, while retail prices at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, MRS filling stations, and others stood between N885 and N915 per litre in Abuja.

Senate to Natasha: Stay away from National Assembly

For the third time in recent weeks, the Senate has maintained that there was no court pronouncement mandating the Red Chamber to recall the suspended Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, stated this in a statement yesterday.

Adaramodu’s declaration followed Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s vow to resume at the National Assembly on Tuesday. The Kogi Central lawmaker hinted at her decision while addressing participants at a training programme for her constituents in Kogi State.

She said: “I have pretty much two months more before the six months expire. However, I have written to the Senate again telling them that I’m resuming on the 22nd, which is on Tuesday, by the special grace of God.

“I will be there, because the court did make the decision on that. Now, they argue that it’s an order — it’s not an order, but it is a decision.”

Adaramodu insisted that the embattled lawmaker, who was placed on a six-month suspension last March for breaching Senate rules, based her intention to resume on a misinterpretation of the ruling by Justice Binta Nyako.

The Senate spokesman argued in his statement that “the Honourable Court gave a non-binding advisory, urging the Senate to consider amending its Standing Orders and reviewing the suspension, which it opined might be excessive. The Court, however, explicitly held that the Senate did not breach any law or constitutional provision in imposing the disciplinary measure based on the Senator’s misconduct during plenary.”

The Senate urged Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to stay away from the National Assembly complex and allow due process to run its full course.

The statement reads: “The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria wishes to reaffirm, for the third time, that there is no subsisting court order mandating the Senate to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan before the expiration of her suspension.

“This clarification becomes necessary following the circulating claims by the suspended Senator that she intends to resume at the Senate next Tuesday based on a misinterpretation of the recent judgment delivered by Hon. Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

“It will be recalled that the Senate had, through my office, issued two public statements following the judgment and the subsequent release of the Certified True Copy of the Enrolled Order. In both statements, we made it unequivocally clear that the judgment did not contain any positive or mandatory order directing the Senate to recall Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan prior to the end of her suspension.

“Rather, the Honourable Court gave a non-binding advisory urging the Senate to consider amending its Standing Orders and reviewing the suspension, which it opined might be excessive. The Court, however, explicitly held that the Senate did not breach any law or constitutional provision in imposing the disciplinary measure based on the Senator’s misconduct during plenary.

“Furthermore, the Court found Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt of court and imposed penalties, including a fine of ₦5 million payable to the Federal Government, and a mandatory apology in two national newspapers and on her Facebook page. Till date, these directives remain uncomplied with.

“It is therefore surprising and legally untenable that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, while on appeal and having filed a motion for stay against the valid and binding orders made against her, is attempting to act upon an imaginary order of recall that does not exist. The Senate emphasized once more: there is no enforceable order directing her immediate return to the chamber.

“We advise the Distinguished Senator to refrain from any attempt to storm the Senate next Tuesday under a false pretext, as doing so would not only be premature but also undermine the dignity of the Senate and violate due process. The Senate, as a law-abiding institution, is committed to upholding the rule of law and the integrity of its proceedings. It will not tolerate the disruption of its proceedings.

“The Senate will, at the appropriate time, consider the advisory opinion of the court on both amending the Standing Orders of the Senate, her recall, and communicate same thereof to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

“Until then, she is respectfully advised to stay away from the Senate chambers and allow due process to run its full course.”

Saudi Arabia’s ‘Sleeping Prince’ dies after 20 years in coma

Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, popularly known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has died at the age of 36, two decades after he fell into a coma following a car accident in London.

According to The Sun UK, the royal, who suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2005 while studying at a military college in the UK, passed away on Saturday, according to an announcement by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz.

“With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree, and with deep sorrow and sadness, we mourn our beloved son: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away today,” the grieving father wrote on X.

Following the accident two decades ago, Prince Al-Waleed was transferred to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he remained in a coma for 20 years under continuous medical supervision and ventilator support.

Despite consultations with several specialists from around the world and moments of minor physical response that offered hope, he never regained consciousness.

The Prince’s prolonged condition had drawn public attention in the kingdom and beyond, with many Saudis following his rare movements and responses with hope

My marriage to Buhari is intact -Aisha, spurns reported divorce

…As Kperogi offers heart-felt, unreserved apology to her

Nigeria’s former First Lady, Hajia Aisha, has denied her reported divorce from the late President Muhammadu Buhari before his death.

Professor FarooqKperogi, who was the purveyor of the incorrect news that set the Internet on fire, has recanted and tendered his heartfelt and unreserved apology to her.

The reaction of Aisha was articulated by the former Senior Special Assistant to the First Lady on Public Affairs, AlhajiSani Zorro, who is also an eminent journalist.

According to Kperogi, in a post on his Facebook page on Sunday, it was Zorro who conveyed the denial of his initial post by Aisha to him.

He wrote: “Although I absolutely should have foreseen it, I honestly didn’t anticipate the profoundly painful consequences that my July 16 Facebook update titled “Aisha Buhari, Divorce, and Forgiveness Claim” would have on former First Lady Mrs. Aisha Buhari and people closest to her.

“It’s one of the worst and cruellest lapses of judgement I have ever committed in my life, and it has been a source of unfathomable personal anguish for me these past few days.

“My source, whose integrity is unimpeachable, insists the information is accurate, but never intended for it to become public. Going public with the information was an error on my part, as not every well-sourced information is for public consumption.

“On the other side, AlhajiSani Zorro, former SSA to the First Lady on Public Affairs, whom I hold in the highest esteem, has reached out to question the accuracy of my claims.

“I will not contest the particulars and veracity of the information with AlhajiSani who conveyed the former First Lady’s position that her marriage was intact. After all, as the late MKO Abiola memorably said, no one can give you a haircut in your absence.

“Clearly, Mrs. Buhari herself has the ultimate authority and right to define the status of her marriage with her late husband. Her truth should be respected as supreme, whatever other facts may exist.

“Moreover, the truth of this information is now far less significant than the hurt my disclosure of it has caused. I shouldn’t have shared it publicly. Period. Doing so violated every moral and ethical principle I cherish and uphold. But it shows I am only human, an imperfect human.

“I realize it might be impossible for many to believe (except those who truly know me) that I acted without malice, ulterior motives, or external influence. But I sincerely did not intend to harm Mrs. Buhari or execute any personal vendetta.

“To Mrs. Aisha Buhari, I offer my heartfelt and unreserved apology for the needless and deeply regrettable hurt I have caused. I am truly sorry.”

Buhari could have lived if treated at our facility — ABUAD Hospital’s CMD

The Chief Medical Director of Afe Babalola University Multi-System Hospital (AMSH), Dr Akinola Akinmade, has stated that former President Muhammadu Buhari could have been kept alive if he had received treatment at the Institution’s world-class medical facility.

Akinmade, who exuded confidence in the hospital’s cutting-edge technology and skilled personnel, said the health facility would do everything in its capacity to keep the late President alive and functional.

The CMD, who said this in Ado-Ekiti, over the weekend, while addressing journalists, lamented the persistent trend of medical tourism abroad, especially among the political leaders and the very rush Nigerians, saying it’s high time for governments to bolster healthcare infrastructure, by taking a cue from ABUAD Hospital which has been described as the best equipped hospital in Sub Saharan Africa, with some of the best clinicians in the country.

According to him, there is hardly any tertiary health facility in Nigeria and Africa that is as equipped, or that can boast of the volume of sophisticated medical equipment, including hordes of cross-border personnel that AMSH parade daily.

All of these peculiarities, he said, were assembled by the visionary and patriotic zeal of the founder and legal icon, Afe Babalola (SAN), all in the efforts to make sure the hospital met global health demands of all classes of people, whether rich or poor, lowly or highly placed.

“Only late last year, the hospital, under the visionary leadership of our founder, went a step further by going into a formal collaboration with Marengo Asia Hospitals, a leading medical group, based in India.

“This partnership was established to deepen surgical excellence and expand the scope of specialized procedures available to patients, right here in Nigeria.

Since the commencement of this collaboration, the Marengo Asia surgical team, working alongside our dedicated Nigerian clinicians, has completed nine kidney transplant procedures here at AMSH.

“In addition to transplant services, our Renal Centre is equipped with 27 modern dialysis machines, including dedicated machines for patients with infectious conditions, such as hepatitis and similar ailments. As we speak, the centre conducts minimum of over 400 dialysis treatment sessions each month, thereby making it one if the busiest and most comprehensive dialysis programmes in the country”.

He noted that the various medical feats of the hospital have earned it an award for ‘Redefining Standards in Hospital Management, Clinical Delivery, Patient Experience and Innovation within Nigeria’s Healthcare System’, by the National Healthcare Excellence Awards Group.Akinmade asserted that Nigeria can only be free from colonisation if it’s able to provide quality healthcare delivery for its citizens without relying on medical tourism. The CMD made these remarks in reaction to a recent statement by Femi Adesina, the former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Muhammadu Buhari, who said the ex-President would have died years ago if he had been treated in a Nigerian Hospital.

It would be recalled that Buhari died in a London Clinic on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82, where he was receiving medical treatment for an undisclosed ailment and was buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

Akinmade stated further that his stance has always been that a country that cannot treat its ailments can be considered colonized. We have to be able to treat our ailments.

“Our hospitals have to be able to take care of our people, and we cannot always resort to running outside the country for health care. It is important for us to develop our capabilities, and these things don’t happen overnight.

“In terms of that, ABUAD Hospital has been described as the best-equipped hospital in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond that, our hospital is staffed with some of the best clinicians in the country.“One thing that is different about us is that we fight for every life. So, I can assure you that if we had been the ones attending to the former president, we would have done everything possible to keep him alive and functional”.

The CMD also called on the government to urgently fix Ado-Ijan road, describing it as a critical access route that poses a threat to emergency patients, transport and hospital partners. He reaffirmed the Hospital’s commitment to delivering world-class healthcare, training future health professionals and driving innovation that meets the real needs of Nigerians.

It’s attempt to discredit IGP – PCRC fumes as police retirees set for protest today

The Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, yesterday said the planned nationwide protest by retired police officers is an attempt to discredit the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.

Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers, Mannir M. Lawal had in an interview, told our correspondent that members of the union would protest in Abuja on Monday, July 21.

However, PCRC National Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Olaniyan in a statement, claimed that the proposed protest, a campaign for the rights of retired police personnel, was ill-timed, stressing that it aimed at undermining the achievements of the IGP.

“It is a calculated attempt to distract and discredit the commendable progress being made by the I-G and by extension, the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

“The PCRC holds in high regard, the integrity, discipline, and patriotism of our retired police officers.

“We believe they possess both the dignity and appropriate channels to express concerns without resorting to opportunistic or politically motivated demonstrations.

“They do not need intermediaries to speak on their behalf,” he said.

Withdraw threat to Peter Obi or face legal action – Falana warns Gov Okpebholo

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Femi Falana, has called on Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State to immediately retract recent threats made against the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Falana’s reaction followed remarks attributed to the governor during a political rally in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, where he reportedly warned that Obi must not enter Edo State without prior notification or security clearance.

The governor said: “There’s a new sheriff in town. He cannot just come into Edo without informing me. His security will not be guaranteed. If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking.”

In a statement released yesterday, Falana condemned the governor’s comments, describing them as a direct violation of fundamental rights enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights instruments.

“The threat to Mr Peter Obi’s life by the so-called ‘new sheriff in town’ contravenes Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as well as Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, both of which guarantee the right to life,” Falana stated.

He emphasized that under Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution, the security and welfare of citizens remain the primary responsibility of government, urging Governor Okpebholo to publicly retract the threat, issue an apology to Obi, and affirm his safety within Edo State.

Falana also advised that if the governor fails to withdraw the statement, Obi should seek legal redress by filing a suit at the Federal High Court in Benin to enforce his fundamental rights.

“Mr Obi should act with utmost urgency in view of the prevalence of mob justice and other forms of extrajudicial killings in the country,” he said.

Senate, Natasha, set for battle royale

  • I’ll resume on Tuesday – Natasha
  • Stay aware from National Assembly – Senate

Suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has vowed to resume her duties in the Senate on Tuesday.

Akpoti-Uduaghan said her resumption was in line with a court decision.

She disclosed this in a chat with journalists while in her constituency for a training programme on Saturday.

The embattled lawmaker said the suspension limited her from performing her legislative duties.

Natasha disclosed that she has official informed the Senate in writing about her intentions to resume.

She noted that despite the controversy surrounding the ruling of the Abuja Federal High Court, she will resume on Tuesday.

“I have pretty much two months more before the six months expire. However, I have written to the Senate again telling them that I’m resuming on the 22nd, which is on Tuesday, by the special grace of God.

“I will be there, because the court did make the decision on that,” she said.

Onuimo LGA chairman Dr. Obi begins rehabilitation work on major roads

The chairman of Onuimo Local Government DrEmeka Paul Obi has commenced the rehabilitation of some sections of Onuimo roads to alleviate the suffering of motorists in the area.
He maintained that the exercise became necessary owing to the heavy downpour witnessed in the area in the recent months.
According to him, the closing of potholes will help motorists navigate Onuimo roads and also control those areas that were gradually turning into erosions.
He disclosed that one of the major problems bedeviling Onuimo is erosion, but that his administration is doing everything possible to ensure that it does not get out of hand.
Dr. Obi said after the massive grading of more than 4000 kilometers of roads in Onuimo before the Christmas festivities last year was the first of its kind in the history of governance in the area and that this helped Onuimolites that returned home for the celebration to move freely.
He disclosed further that the current operation was an intervention, adding that as soon as the rain subsides, permanent actions will commence without failing.
“Currently we are working on the Ezelu to Umucheke road because of its strategic importance to the people as other areas can connect through that road and it is busy all the time.
“We are also going to work on the Umuna to Okwe to Umuduruegbeaguru road. This is another very important and busy road. We want motorists especially food produce from the hinterlands to have easy access to the markets.

He insisted that all the roads that deserve the attention of his administration at this time will be attended to and assured the people of Onuimo of his desire to make the area great again.

Peter Obi in Daura to sign the condolence register and condole with Buhari’s family

Obi was spotted at Buhari’sDaura residence yesterday, a day after the former President was laid to rest.

Buhari was buried on Tuesday in Daura, according to Islamic rites, marking the end of a solemn national farewell to a leader who once steered Nigeria both as a military Head of State and as a democratically elected President.

His remains were interred at 5:50pm following a funeral prayer led by the Imam of the Central Mosque in Daura, Sheikh SalisuRabiu.

I never met Buhari before my appointment as CDS – Irabor

A former Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor (retd), has disclosed a surprising detail about his 2021 military appointment: he’d never personally met then-President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a heartfelt tribute to the late president on Tuesday, Irabor lauded Buhari as “a good man and a disciplined and deeply principled leader.”

According to Irabor, Buhari’s leadership style was that of trust and delegation.

He added that Buhari placed implicit trust in those he appointed and never micromanaged, never second-guessing.

He said Buhari’s quiet confidence was sometimes misunderstood, but for those who worked closely with him, it was a mark of his character.

Irabor said, “I have never met you before, but I have heard of your performance. I hope you will not disappoint.

“Before he appointed me as Chief of Defence Staff on 26 January 2021, I had never met him personally.

“Like many Nigerians, I knew him only from a distance through the pages of history, the news, and the reverence with which he was spoken of in military circles.”

The ex-defence chief added, “In President Buhari, I encountered a disciplined and deeply principled leader. A man who said little but listened intently and deeply.

“He sat for hours, attentive and composed, never once calling for a break. I once asked him, half in jest, how he found the patience and strength. He only smiled.

“I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have served in his administration. To my Commander-in-Chief, my Principal – President Muhammadu Buhari, at the sound of the Last Post, rest well. You fought the good fight. May your soul find eternal peace in the bosom of the Almighty.”

Irabor also extended condolences to the Buhari’s family, particularly the former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, describing the late president’s service as marked by “dignity, honour, and integrity.”

…his ADC led coalition is no threat to us

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has described the departure of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a form of “freedom” for the party, saying it is better than being held back by internal obstacles.

Atiku, who was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, officially resigned from the party in a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State. In the letter, he said the PDP had strayed from its founding vision, describing his decision to leave as painful.

His resignation comes weeks after joining a coalition of opposition figures that adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their political platform ahead of the 2027 general election.

Reacting to the development during the 10th Coronation Anniversary Colloquium of the Deji of Akure, Oba AladetoyinboOgunladeAladelusi, held in Akure, Governor Makinde said Atiku’s exit does not diminish the PDP’s strength or prospects.

“Politics is a game of interest, and I don’t think Atiku’s exit will make any dent on the PDP. The PDP is an institution,” Makinde said. “You have the freedom to enter and exit. But I think anyone who would hold PDP down—it’s better for such a person to just leave.”

He dismissed concerns over the rising profile of the ADC, saying it poses no threat to the PDP. “I don’t see ADC as a threat to the PDP. The goal is the same if you’re dissatisfied with the pace and direction of governance. You’re free to associate with any platform,” he noted.

Governor Makinde concluded by emphasizing that political players come and go, but the nation and its institutions will endure: “Governors will come and go, presidents will come and go, but our country and our states will remain.”

Nigeria’s Inflation Eases Again To 22.22

Nation Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has announced that Nigeria’s headline inflation rate reduced to 22.22 percent in June 2025.

The latest figure is lower when compared to 22.97% for May 2025 headline inflation rate.

Food inflation rate in June 2025 also dropped to 21.97% on a year-on-year basis, representing 18.90% points lower compared to the rate recorded in June 2024 at 40.87%.

“The significant decline in the annual food inflation figure is technically due to the change in the base year,” the bureau stated in the data released on Wednesday.

On a month-on-month basis, the Food inflation rate in June 2025 was 3.25%, up by 1.07% compared to May 2025 (2.19%).

The NBS attributed the increase to rise in the average prices of Green Peas (dried), pepper (fresh), shrimps (white dried), crayfish, meat, among others.

The average annual rate of food inflation for the twelve months ending June 2025 over the previous 12-month average was 28.28%, which was 7.06% points lower compared with the average annual rate of change recorded in June 2024 at 35.35%.

Nigeria’s annual inflation rate eased for the second month to 22.97% in May 2025, from 23.71% in the prior month.

On a year-on-year basis, the inflation rate was 11.97% lower than the rate recorded in June 2024 (34.19%).

This shows that the headline inflation rate (year-on-year basis) decreased in June 2025 compared to the same month in June 2024, although with a different base year, November 2009 = 100.

On a month-on-month basis, the headline inflation rate in June 2025 was 1.68%, which was 0.15% higher than the rate recorded in May 2025 (1.53%).

This means that in June 2025, the rate of increase in the average price level was higher than the rate of increase in the average price level in May 2025.

The percentage change in the average CPI for the twelve months ending June 2025 over the average for the previous twelve-month period was 26.58%, showing a 3.42% decrease compared to 30.00% recorded in June 2024.

On a year-on-year basis, in June 2025, the urban inflation rate was 22.72%, 13.83% points lower compared to the 36.55% recorded in June 2024.

Nigeria needs a ‘peoples’ democratic Constitution’ – Emeka Anyaoku

A former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, says Nigeria needs a new inclusive and democratic constitution that will accommodate the country’s plurality.

Anyaoku stated this at a national summit organised by The Patriots and Nigerian Political Summit Group on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that the 1999 Constitution was not democratically formulated, and is not in sync with the plural nature of the country.

Anyaoku, who was the chairman of the summit, said that only a constitution that accommodates the plurality of Nigeria could address the country’s myriad of challenges.

“As a background to this summit, it is important to state the following indisputable facts that are recognised by all citizens, except of course those who want to continue to live in denial.

“Nigeria is a pluralistic country. Like all successful pluralistic countries around the world, for its political stability and maximal development, its constitution must address its pluralism by being formulated by elected representatives of its diverse peoples.

“Our present 1999 Constitution (as amended) is not such. It was not democratically-formulated. It was, instead, imposed on the country through a decree by the military administration.

“And the governance system derived from it is not only non-inclusive but also induces over-expenditure of the country’s resources on administration rather than on capital development. Hence the need for a new Nigerian peoples’ democratic constitution,’’ he said.

According to the elder statesman, the rising cases of insecurity, high poverty, lagging infrastructure and lack of confidence in the future among the growing youth population have necessitated a new constitution.

“Overall, the present 36 federating units are obviously incapable of generating and sustaining the pace of national development achieved in the early years of the country’s independence,’’ he said.

Other issues, according to him, include number of federating units, powers of the national and sub-national governments, structure of the security agencies, political parties and their organization, management of the country’s resources and other important features of the constitution.

“In considering the process of actualising the new constitution, I hope that there would be due emphasis on ensuring that it is formulated by representatives specifically elected for that purpose by the Nigerian people,” he said.

In order to give the new constitution the necessary legitimacy, the former veteran diplomat said it would have to be endorsed by the people through a national referendum.

Three rescued as police foil kidnap plot in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has rescued three victims in separate operations across the state after it foiled a kidnapping attempt.

During the process, the police also arrested a notorious member of what they described as “a proscribed armed separatist group” and recovered arms and other incriminating items.

The spokesman for the state command, SP TochukwuIkenga, who confirmed the development in a press statement on Tuesday, said the police operatives carried out the exercise in a series of coordinated operations in different parts of the state in the early hours of Tuesday.

Ikenga noted that in recent times, the command had continued to record major operational breakthroughs in its relentless efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.

He said, “The Anambra State Police Command, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, IkioyeOrutugu, continues to record major operational breakthroughs in its relentless efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.

“In a series of coordinated operations across different parts of the state, police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, in the early hours of today (Tuesday), July 15, 2025, arrested one Gospel OziomaNneto, male, aged 31, aka “OZ,” a notorious leader of a proscribed armed separatist group.

“In another operation, the Divisional Police Officers of Nimo and Nteje, in collaboration with local vigilante operatives, successfully rescued three kidnapped victims held by suspected armed hoodlums. Items recovered from the operations include: One pump-action gun and one dagger.

“The arrested suspect is a known terrorist, kidnapper, and armed robber, and a confirmed member of the proscribed separatist group.

“During interrogation, he confessed to being a photographer for the group, operating from a camp known as “Mother Valley,” located in the Orsumohu-Orsu axis. He is currently undergoing further interrogation as discreet investigations continue to uncover his criminal network.”

He added that a joint security team comprising police operatives from Nimo Division and local vigilante members, acting on credible intelligence, searched forested areas between Oraukwu and Nimo communities in the evening of July 15, 2025.

“This led to the successful rescue of two female kidnap victims. The victims will be reunited with their families following necessary medical and psychological evaluations.

“In another breakthrough, on the evening of July 14, 2025, police operatives from the Nteje Division, responding to an attempted attack by two armed suspects, engaged the assailants in a gun duel.

“The operatives neutralised the armed hoodlums and recovered one pump-action gun, one dagger, and other incriminating items.”

Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend other fleeing members of the criminal syndicates involved in these incidents.

According to the PPRO, “The command remains resolute in its mission to ensure the safety and security of all residents and visitors to Anambra State.”

ADC coalition not threat to PDP — Makinde

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed no fear over the ongoing African Democratic Congress coalition by some notable politicians in the country.

The governor said the development could not affect the progress of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party in any manner.

Makinde stated this yesterday while speaking with journalists on the campus of the Federal University of Technology Akure, Ondo State, the venue of a colloqiumorganised as part of 10th coronation anniversary of the Deji of Akure, Oba AladetoyinboAladelusi.

The PDP governor said in politics there is freedom of entry and exit for members of political parties and what is currently happening in the PDP was not a new thing in politics.

Makinde stated, “Politics is a game of interest. I don’t think that will make any dent on the PDP as a party.

“The PDP is an institution. We have freedom of entrance and exit. Anyone that will hold the PDP down, it is better for such an individual to quit.

“I don’t see the ADC as a threat to the PDP. The goal is about the same. If you are not happy about the tempo and pace of governance, you are free to associate and see what can be done.

“But one thing we must all realise is that players will come and go, governors will come and go, the president will come and go but our states and country will remain.”

Meanwhile, the state chapter of the ADC has declared that the executive of the party in the state was still intact, despite the formation of the coalition when members of other political parties were joining the coalition.

In a statement issued by the Publicity Secretary of the party MrEniolaOlurotimi, the ADC debunked the report that the leadership of the party has changed following the coalition.

In the statement, the party clarified that the Executive Committee, led by MrsSidikatuOjo, is the duly recognised and constitutionally appointed leadership of the ADC in the state.

“We urge all party members, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard any misleading claims or publications suggesting a change in the Ondo State executive. Chief (Mrs) SidikatuOjo remains the authentic and recognised Chairperson of the African Democratic Congress in Ondo State,” the statement read.

The ADC emphasised its commitment to stability, transparency, and grassroots mobilisation, assuring members that the leadership remains focused on the party’s vision and preparations for future elections.

“All the list of names announced by the certain people to coordinate local government offices of ADC in Ondo State is hereby not acceptable, null and void as it runs counter to the subsisting order within the party.

“Therefore, all those so appointed must immediately desist from exercising any authority whatsoever on behalf of the party,” the party declared.
