National Grid: FG targets 4,200MW from renewable with battery energy storage system

The Federal Government has initiated plans to deploy renewable energy battery storage systems to enhance the stability of the national electricity grid.

The initiative aims to enable the integration of 4,200MWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) power into the national grid by 2030.

Speaking at the inaugural workshop on the Nigeria Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Feasibility Study, hosted by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in collaboration with the African Development Bank Group and the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized the urgency of addressing energy storage challenges as solar and wind power continue to gain traction in the country.

According to Adelabu, BESS represents the most practical and scalable solution to support the grid and ensure reliable power supply amid Nigeria’s growing reliance on renewable energy sources.

Represented by the Assistant Director, Renewable and Rural Power Access, Engr. Ben Anyangeror, the Minister noted that despite major reforms in the sector, “key challenges persist particularly the issues of power intermittency, limited dispatchability of renewables, grid instability and underutilised energy generation”.

He noted that the BESS would enhance grid stability and flexibility, reduce reliance on fossil based peaking plants, enable deeper integration of renewable energy into both grid-connected and offgrid systems, improve power quality and system reliability especially during voltage or frequency disturbances, and extend access to clean energy in underserved and and remote areas.

“Particularly important is the grid-forming capability of advanced battery storage systems. Unlike traditional grid-following inverters, grid-forming BESS can establish voltage and frequency references, essentially acting as virtual generators.

This makes them critical assets in maintaining grid frequency regulation, black start capabilities, and power system resilience during disturbances or partial outages. In other words, BESS does not only store energy-they actively support the grid, improving power quality and reducing the risk of blackouts”, he added.

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director, TCN, Engr. Sule Abdulaziz said the workshop was an opportunity to understand the technical and commercial dimensions of BESS, and the institutional readiness to implement the system.

Abdulaziz who was represented by the Executive Director, Transmission Service Provider, Engr Olugbenga Ajiboye said: “For years, our operational teams have contended with the challenges of frequency fluctuations, peak load pressures, and limitations in reactive power support. These technical constraints affect every layer of the electricity value chain-from generation dispatch to the final delivery of power to homes and industries.

“Battery Energy Storage Systems offer us a powerful means to address these persistent challenges. For example, they enable frequency regulation, reserve capacity, and voltage support-directly strengthening grid performance and unlocking more efficient use of our transmission assets. This is precisely why this feasibility study is both timely and so important”.Delta Set to revolutionize electricity sector with mini-grid model, approves key regulatory bodies

On his part, the Director-General, Nigeria Country Department, AfDB, Dr Abdul Kamara said the bank is supporting the study with a $1.2 million grant.

Represented by the Chief Engineer, AfDB Country Office, Chigozie Egerouh, Dr Kamara noted that “as we work toward the ambitious goal of connecting three hundred million people to electricity by 2030 under the Mission 300 initiative, battery energy storage emerges as a critical enabler. And nowhere is this mission more urgent than here in Nigeria, home to an estimated Ninety million people still without access to electricity.”

FG calls for united front to tackle human trafficking — AGF

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, has called for a coordinated, multi-sectoral response to effectively combat human trafficking in Nigeria.

He emphasised the need for collaboration across all levels of government, federal, state, and local, as well as with international partners and civil society organisations to tackle the crime comprehensively.

Speaking at the 28th National Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum (NSCF) on Trafficking in Persons yesterday in Abuja, the AGF, represented by Mrs Victoria Ojogbane, Director of Research and Project Development, addressed the urgent need for collective action.

He emphasised that human trafficking was a transnational and highly organised criminal enterprise that could not be addressed in isolation.

It was  reported  that the forum was held in commemoration of the 2025 International Day Against Human Trafficking, themed “Human Trafficking is Organised Crime: End the Exploitation.”

“Human trafficking is no longer a crime that can be tackled by one agency or sector alone.

“It demands a united front and reinforced partnerships,” Fagbemi said.

He warned that trafficking operations were structured, profit-driven networks that generated more than 245 billion dollars annually, citing the International Labour Organisation, (ILO) 2023 report.

He said that 169.9 billion dollars was derived from sexual exploitation, while 75.9 billion dollars came from forced labour, including domestic servitude.

Fagbemi described the crime as a serious threat to national security, noting that Nigeria was a source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking.

The AGF highlighted Nigeria’s alignment with international and regional legal frameworks such as the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime, (UNTOC) and its protocol on trafficking in persons, especially women and children.

He said the Tinubu-led administration had introduced key reforms to address the root causes of human trafficking.

These, he said, included expanded social investment programmes such as conditional cash transfers, youth employment, and skills acquisition schemes.

He also highlighted justice sector reforms and strengthened mutual legal assistance mechanisms as part of the government’s efforts to address the root causes of trafficking.

“These efforts aim to reduce economic desperation and vulnerabilities that traffickers exploit,” he added.

Also speaking, Mr Cheikh Toure, Nigeria Country Representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, (UNODC), noted that trafficking thrived in highly vulnerable Local Government Areas, where initial recruitment often occurs.

He urged the Federal Government to adopt a whole-of-government approach and adequately fund state task forces and local government focal points to deliver results on the ground.

“The battleground is the community. Prevention remains our strongest weapon,” Toure said.

He also called for consistent domestication and enforcement of anti-trafficking laws.

In her remarks, Hajia Binta Adamu-Bello, Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, (NAPTIP), said Nigeria’s adoption of the ECOWAS Trafficking in Persons,(TIP) Strategy strengthened existing counter-trafficking structures.

She announced the inauguration of a revised National Data Collection System and a new National Dashboard on Human Trafficking, which would enhance reporting, analysis, and evidence-based policymaking.

“These tools are part of a broader data ecosystem that improves accountability and supports decision-making in the fight against trafficking,” she said.

Adamu-Bello also emphasised the need to begin early planning for a new national framework, as the current National Action Plan, (NAP) on Human Trafficking (2022–2026) neared its conclusion.

She lauded the ongoing collaboration between NAPTIP, the International Centre for Migration Policy Development, (ICMPD), and ECOWAS, aimed at domesticating the TIP+ Strategy.

The goal, she noted, was to integrate the strategy with broader national efforts addressing gender-based violence, irregular migration, and exploitation.

NNPCL reveals decision not to sell Port Harcourt refinery

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, (NNPCL), has officially decided not to sell the Port Harcourt Refining Company.

NNPCL has, instead said it is committed to conducting an extensive rehabilitation of the facility and ensuring its continued operation.

During a company-wide town hall meeting held at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, Bayo Ojulari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, announced the decision regarding the future of the nation’s most significant state-owned refining asset, putting an end to weeks of speculation.

A statement by NNPCL reads, “The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has officially ruled out the sale of the Port Harcourt Refining Company, reaffirming its commitment to completing high-grade rehabilitation and retention of the plant.

“The ongoing review indicates that the earlier decision to operate the Port Harcourt refinery, before full completion of its rehabilitation, was ill-informed and subcommercial.

”Although progress is being made on all three, the emerging outlook calls for more advanced technical partnerships to complete and high-grade the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery.

”Thus, selling is highly unlikely as it would lead to further value erosion.”

2027: Tinubu has nothing to fear, can’t be defeated – APC Chair Yilwatda

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, says President Bola Tinubu has nothing to fear and cannot be defeated in the 2027 general elections.

Yilwatda stated this on Tuesday in Abuja while addressing APC supporters under the umbrella of the APC League of Professionals, who came on a solidarity visit to the party’s national secretariat.

According to the newly appointed national chairman, the party would ensure the victory of all its candidates contesting for governorship, national and state assembly seats across the country.

The Plateau-born politician further stated that the achievements recorded under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration were the basis for his assertion.

He also cited the students’ loan scheme and several empowerment programmes being undertaken by the current administration, which he said had positively affected the citizenry.

“The child of the poorest man in Nigeria can now go to school to the peak without borrowing from anywhere. The government has made provision for that. This is the only time we’ve had that in the history of Nigeria.

“The government has dropped N1.5 billion into the Bank of Agriculture to support young men, who want to go into agriculture,” he said.

2027: Peter Obi may lose opportunity to be our candidate – Labour Party Secretary

Factional National Secretary of the Labour Party,( LP), Umar Farouk, yesterday said Peter Obi may lose the opportunity to become the party’s presidential candidate in 2027 if he continues to hobnob with the African Democratic Congress, (ADC).

Farouk, who made this statement in an interview with Trust TV, stressed that the LP will give Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed a chance to contest for President.

He stressed that the party’s presidential ticket is not reserved for anyone.

Expressing displeasure with Obi’s association with leaders of the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress, (ADC), Farouk maintained that the LP’s 2027 presidential ticket will be contested.

The factional national secretary declared Baba-Ahmed, the party’s 2023 Vice Presidential candidate, as qualified as his principal, Obi.

“Datti is qualified to contest for the presidency as good as Peter Obi. So, the seat of that candidacy is not reserved for anybody. It is open for a competitive contest.

“If Datti is willing to aspire for presidency and he wants to do that under the Labour Party, we will open it. Come and buy the form, mobilise his support and then get elected.

“But the only thing is that if those people didn’t come back to us, they lose that opportunity because there’s no way you’ll continue to romance with other political parties and then you still come back and your one leg is in the Labour Party. No, ab initio, you may be disqualified,” he said.

Farouk’s comment is coming barely a week after Baba-Ahmed declared his interest in the 2027 presidential race, should Obi decide not to contest.

However, Baba-Ahmed, who said he is not desperate to become President, also reaffirmed his support for Obi, saying the former governor of Anambra State deserves another chance to contest on the platform of the Labour Party.

Gov Uzodimma’s Health Insurance Scheme has reduced infant, maternal deaths – Oru West Chairman, Adikibe

GOV UZODIMMA

By Ben Duru

The Chairman of Oru West Local Government and Chairman of the Imo State Association of Local Government of Nigeria, (ALGON), Dr. Anthony Ikenna Adikibe has disclosed that the ongoing Imo State Health Insurance scheme by ably championed Governor Hope Uzodimma has led to the reduction of infant and maternal deaths in the State.

Adikibe insisted that citizens of Imo State in general and Oru West in particular must seize the opportunity to register and enjoy the full benefits of the government program.

Speaking when he received in audience the Oru West APC Women Leaders in his office at Mgbidi, Dr. Adikibe said that  Senator Hope Uzodimma’s major target for the scheme were pregnant women, mothers and children in all the communities in Imo State.

According to him the health insurance program had seen many rural women who would not have been able to afford surgery receive first class attention because of registration in the insurance scheme.

He described the governor as a pragmatist and statesman whose focus is the well-being of his people.

Dr. Adikibe, who was recently voted in as the Deputy National President of ALGON urged the APC Women to go to the grassroots and encourage people to get involved in the scheme for their own good.

“The second phase of the registration in the health insurance scheme is going to kickoff soon and many people will be surprised at the package the governor is going to introduce to it. This is why you people should spread the good news at the grassroots.

“His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma is not joking. He means everything he says about the scheme. So as women leaders you must key in to it and spread the good news to those living in the rural areas”

The Chairman further promised the women that he will take a tour of the council areas in solidarity with them to commemorate the 2025 August Meeting exercise.

Earlier the leader of the Women Delegation Mrs Ify Obi showered encomium on Engr. Adikibe for his good working relationship with Women of Oru- West especially the APC extraction and beyond.

She pledged their unalloyed support to the Council’l boss, pointing to his generosity to women in the area as worthy of emulation by others.

Uzodimma is free to host Imo contingent to WAFCON, says govt

The Imo state government has declared that Governor Hope Uzodimma reserves the constitutional and moral right to host the Imo contingent to the just concluded Women African Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco.

It dismissed as mischief and inconsequential, the insinuation of tribal inclination by the Governor, who received players of Imo State origin at the State Lodge in Abuja.

In a statement in Owerri, the Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba, said the social media frenzy was borne out of misinformation and fuelled by mischief makers.

He said though, Uzodimma didn’t formally host the contingent in Abuja, as being peddled by some social media platforms, he has the right to do so, as the Governor and father of Imo State.

“What actually happened was that the victorious squad from Imo State paid a courtesy visit to the Governor at the State Lodge, where he received and prayed for them. Thereafter, he promised to host them in Owerri this weekend,” Emelumba explained.

He further disclosed that contrary to the imputation of tribalism against the Governor, he was actually at the airport to receive the entire team and accompanied them to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He said, “Perhaps, some people have short memories, otherwise, they would have noticed that Uzodimma, on behalf of his brother Governors, announced a donation to each of the girls. That showed his nationalism and patriotism. He never discriminated against anyone.”

The Commissioner noted that the Governor never committed any crime in personally receiving his visitors, who came to identify with him as the father of Imo State.

He asked those who are aggrieved by that courteous gesture to think again saying: “they may actually be the ones blinded by ethnic and clannish prejudices.”

Emelumba described as malicious and uncalled-for, the attacks on the Governor, saying that he has not done any wrong by his gracious act of courtesy and gratitude to young Nigerians from Imo State

Wife of slain LP lawmaker contests to replace late husband

Posters of Mrs Justina Azuka, wife of slain Anambra lawmaker representing Onitsha North 1 constituency, Late Justice Azuka has surfaced, showing her, seeking support to replace her demised husband.

Justice Azuka was kidnapped in Onitsha on the eve of Christmas of 2024 while returning home for the yuletide.

His decomposing body was later found at the foot of the Second Niger Bridge in February, despite rumours of payment of heavy ransom for his release.

Since after the confirmation of his death, there have been clamour for the wife, Mrs Justina Azuka to replace the late lawmaker, with many people appealing to the Labour Party to nominate her as candidate.

Her poster as the candidate of African Democratic Congress, (ADC), has, however surfaced, leading to controversy about the refusal of the LP to give her their platform as compensation for her husband’s death.

But a source within the LP who didn’t want to be named said: “Initially she was nominated by LP but because of INEC inconsistency in the case between Abure and Nenadi Usman, the leaders of LP moved her candidature to ADC.

“Labour party leaders will be leading her aspiration to victory and that I can assure you 100 percent. LP will also not be contesting against her in that election.”

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), is fielding another lady from the Ikpeazu dynasty, Mimih Ikpeazu-Azikiwe for the contest.

Ukachukwu criticizes APGA for fielding candidate to replace lawmaker killed by kidnappers

Ukachukwu criticizes APGA for fielding candidate to replace lawmaker killed by kidnappers

Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), for the 2025 governorship election in Anambra State, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu has faulted the All Progressives Grand Alliance, (APGA), for fielding a candidate for the Onitsha North 1 State Constituency.

The by-election which is scheduled to hold on August 16 is to replace Justice Azuka, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, who was kidnapped on December 24, while arriving his hometown for the Christmas celebration.

Azuka, who was kidnapped in December, was later found dead in February, his decomposing body, at the foot of the Second Niger Bridge in Onitsha.

While the Labour Party(LP), and the African Democratic Congress, (ADC), have teamed up to field the wife of the late LP lawmaker in ADC as a replacement for her husband, APGA is fielding Mimih Ifeoma Azikiwe, another lady to replace the late lawmaker.

But governorship candidate of APC, Prince Ukachukwu, has criticized APGA for fielding a candidate to replace a man who died of insecurity as a result of the perceived incompetence of their government.

Speaking to journalists in Awka yesterday, Ukachukwu said: “How will they pay back for all the people who have died as a result of insecurity in Anambra?

“Now, Hon Justice Azuka died as a result of the inability of this government to provide security, and now APGA is fielding another candidate to replace the man who died because of insecurity. Is that not ridiculous?

“They do not care about your security, politics is more important to them. If you die as a result of insecurity by their government, they will just move on.”

Ukachukwu assured that his government is fully prepared to provide security in Anambra, berating the Prof Chukwuma Soludo-led government for the level of insecurity in the state.

“Have you seen the level of insecurity in Anambra State? The people can no longer sleep with their eyes closed. What the government of the day is more concerned about is revenue drive, using very crude methods.

“You have seen the video of Aka Odo people (task force), you saw how these government-sponsored thugs were tormenting a man, this is barbaric. By the grace of God, when I become governor, I will abolish all those things.

“Security is very paramount, and we will use various methods to safeguard our people,” Ukachukwu declared.

Akwa Ibom Assembly demands speedy rescue of 13 abducted farmers

Pastor Umo Eno, Governor of Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has called for immediate release of the 13 farmers from Itu Mbonuso, Ini local government of the state, who were abducted on their farm recently.

It urged the State Ministry of Internal Security to promptly collaborate with security agencies to secure their release.

The resolution followed a matter of urgent public importance raised by the member representing the Ini state constituency, Lawrence Udoide during yesterday’s plenary.

Udoide disclosed to the House that on July 14,  that

some people suspected to come from Arochukwu, a neighboring community in Abia State abducted 13 farmers to an unknown destination.

The report was received through a motion by Mr Moses Essien, member representing Ibiono Ibom state constituency and seconded by Mr Itoro-Obong Etim, member representing Uruan state constituency.

The lawmaker expressed grave concern over the rising incidents of violence in his constituency, describing the situation as “a siege perpetrated by unscrupulous elements from Arochukwu.”

Udoide highlighted the deteriorating security conditions in Ini local government area, noting that residents of Nkari, Itu-Mbonuso, and Iwerre now live in constant fear.

“One of my constituents went to his farm and discovered that someone had trespassed on his land. He, along with his brother, approached the trespassers to resolve the issue amicably.

“Unfortunately, a misunderstanding ensued, and the trespassers called for reinforcements.

“My constituent was assaulted, and one person was abducted and taken to Abia State.

“The brother who returned home to report the incident later returned with others to search for the abducted individual, only to be ambushed, resulting in the abduction of 12 more people from Itu Mbonuso, bringing the total to 13 that are yet to be released,” Udoide said.

Udoide pleaded with the House to take action and inform Gov. Umo Eno to engage with the Abia Government to facilitate the release of the 13 abducted farmers without delay.

Members who contributed to the debate described the incursion into Itu Mbonuso as unacceptable, stressing that the people deserved to live in peace in their land without molestation.

The Speaker, Mr Udeme Otong, urged the Akwa Ibom Government to engage the Abia counterpart to ensure the safe return of the abducted individuals without delay.

Otong also directed the Chairman of the House Committee on Security to coordinate with the relevant government’s ministry and security agencies for updates on the situation.

He urged the security agencies to work together and prevent further attacks on Itu Mbonuso and other border communities in the Ini local government area.

Deportation: Bianca Ojukwu meets Ghanaian authorities

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has stepped in to address rising tensions and concerns over the safety of Nigerians in Ghana following a viral video showing some Ghanaians protesting and calling for the deportation of Nigerians.

The minister, currently on a two-day official visit to Ghana, is engaging with key Ghanaian authorities and the Nigerian community to ensure the protection of Nigerian lives, businesses, and property in the West African country.

According to a statement issued by her media aide, Magnus Eze, Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s mission includes meetings with Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, Foreign Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, traditional leaders, and Nigerians residing in Ghana.

“Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, is in Ghana to address Nigeria-Ghana citizen relations and ensure that the lives and interests of Nigerians in Ghana are safeguarded,” the statement read.

Shortly after arriving at Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Tuesday evening, the Minister had a brief interaction with Ghana’s Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who was en route to London.

She continued similar high-level engagements yesterday.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fostering strong bilateral ties with Ghana, including people-to-people relations. She is expected to return to Abuja on Thursday.

Doctors, nurses threaten nation-wide strike over poor welfare

Nigeria’s health sector is set for another major crisis, as both the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, have issued strike notices over longstanding grievances against the Federal Government, raising fears of a total collapse of public healthcare services.

While the NMA, has handed the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to meet its demands or face a total and indefinite nationwide strike by medical doctors, nurses under the aegis of NANNM, began a seven-day warning strike following the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum, shutting down nursing services in federal hospitals across the country.

Rising from its Emergency Delegates Meeting, (EDM), held on July 26, 2025, in Abuja, the NMA expressed disappointment over the lingering negotiations with the Federal Government on issues affecting doctors’ welfare, especially the controversial circular from the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, (NSIWC), on the review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Scale, (CONMESS).

According to a communique signed by NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu and Secretary General, Dr. Jamin Egbo, the circular was only suspended, not withdrawn, as the NMA had demanded.

The meeting was convened at the instance of the National Officers Committee, NOC, in response to delays in the payment of seven-month arrears from the 25/35% CONMESS adjustment, failure to implement previously signed Collective Bargaining Agreements, CBAs, and the government’s general neglect of the health sector.

The communique reads in part, “The EDM following extensive deliberations unanimously condemned the attitude of the Federal Government to the welfare of its members and the persistent attitude of government officials to issues affecting Nigerian doctors,”

“The EDM issued a 21-day notice of a total and indefinite strike in line with the relevant labour laws effective from July 27, 2025 should the Government fail to address its demands comprehensively within this period.

“The EDM remains optimistic that the Government in its concern to the health needs of Nigerian citizens, and the welfare of the patriotic Nigerian doctors working tirelessly under unpleasant conditions and economic realities will be responsive to these concerns to avert this impending industrial disharmony in the health sector.

“The EDM mandated the NOC and the NTNT to bring their experience to bear in all engagements with the Nigerian government to deliver tangible results to the Nigerian doctor.”

The NMA expressed gratitude to its delegates from the 36 states and the FCT, and urged all doctors to remain steadfast. It also reviewed the Memorandum of Understanding signed with government representatives and expressed concern over “some inadequacies.”

Meanwhile, nurses under the NANNM umbrella, have commenced a 7-day warning strike across all federal health institutions, including Teaching Hospitals and Federal Medical Centres, after a 15-day ultimatum expired without government response.

The strike, declared total, began yesterday midnight and affects all nursing services nationwide.

In a circular signed by NANNM National Secretary, Comrade Enya Osinachi, the union directed all units to withdraw services immediately.

The notice reads, “Following the decision taken by the National Executive Council of the Sector during the Emergency Meeting held at National Hospital, Abuja on 10th July, 2025 and subsequent to the directive of the National headquarters of the association, you are hereby directed to embark on 7-day warning strike commencing from 12:00 midnight of Tuesday July 29, 2025.

“This is as a result of failure of the Federal Government of Nigeria/Federal Ministry of Health to take proactive measures to address our concerns and avert this industrial action despite the 15-day ultimatum given from Monday July 14., 2025.

“This strike action is total and there should not be any skeletal nursing services in any of the Federal health Institutions across the country. Thank you in anticipation as we expect full compliance from all members.”

Earlier in July, NANNM National Chairman, Comrade Morakinyo Rilwan, had criticised the recent review of nurses’ allowances as inadequate, stating that it failed to address key welfare issues such as insufficient allowances for night shifts, weekend shifts, and poor call-duty compensation.

Among their demands are the creation of a Department of Nursing at the Federal Ministry of Health, upward review of shift duty and specialist allowances, a secure and conducive work environment, and well-equipped hospitals to curb outbound medical tourism.

IPOB knocks UK govt over silence on continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu

THE Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), has berated the United Kingdom for its alleged complicity in the alleged illegal rendition and detention of its leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

IPOB in a statement by its Spokesman / Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful titled, “United Kingdoms complicity in Nigeria’s illegal rendition and detention of British citizen Mazi Nnamdi Kanu: A judicial and moral indictment” decried the continued silence and what it called apparent complicity of United Kingdom government in the face of violation of Kanu’s right.

The pro-Biafra group which described Mazi Kanu’s rendition as flagrant breach of Section 15 of Nigeria’s Extradition Act,

Article 12(4) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and

Articles 9 and 14 of the ICCPR, to which both Nigeria and the UK are state parties.

IPOB’s statement read, “The Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB), decries the continued silence and apparent complicity of the United Kingdom Government in the face of Nigeria’s gross and well-documented violations of international law, domestic law, and judicial precedent against Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a British citizen and freedom advocate.”

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was abducted in Kenya in June 2021 in a state-sponsored criminal act of extraordinary rendition and forcibly returned to Nigeria without any extradition proceedings, a flagrant breach of Section 15 of Nigeria’s Extradition Act,

Article 12(4) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and

Articles 9 and 14 of the ICCPR, to which both Nigeria and the UK are state parties.

“What makes the UK’s silence especially appalling is that this is not an abstract diplomatic disagreement, but a matter in which the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (Opinion No. 25/2022) unequivocally declared Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s detention illegal, and ordered his immediate release and compensation.

“The Kenyan High Court ruled that his abduction on Kenyan soil was unconstitutional, and awarded damages for Kenya’s complicity. The Nigerian Court of Appeal (October 2022) held that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s extraordinary rendition constituted a fundamental violation of Nigerian law, effectively nullifying the proceedings against him.

“The Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia (2022) awarded Mazi Kanu, ₦500 million in damages for the same violations. Three judicial forums in Nigeria, Kenya, and at the UN level have all concluded that Nnamdi Kanu’s fundamental rights were trampled upon.

“It is alarming that after all these the UK Government, under the pretence of consular ambiguity and “dual nationality,” has refused to act or even issue a formal condemnation. This is in stark contradiction to its own principled reaction in the Dikko Affair (1984), where it, condemned Nigeria’s attempted rendition of Umaru Dikko from the UK in the strongest diplomatic terms.

“Severed diplomatic ties, threatened legal action for violations of international law and British sovereignty. In Dikko v. The State [1987] 2 NWLR (Pt. 56) 539, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, per Karibi-Whyte, JSC, made a judicial pronouncement that remains timeless.

“The trial of an accused person who has been brought before the court in violation of international law and without compliance with extradition procedures is a nullity. Jurisdiction cannot be conferred upon the court by illegality.

“It is deeply ironic, if not disgraceful, that while Nigeria is abandoning its own Supreme Court precedent, the UK has chosen silence, thus betraying the very principles it once stood for.

“To add further salt to injury, the alleged offences for which Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is being persecuted, primarily, political broadcasts were not committed in Nigeria. The applicable Nigerian law, Section 76 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022, provides that Nigerian courts can only assume jurisdiction where the alleged act is also a crime in the place it was committed, the well-established principle of double criminality.

“There is no evidence nor allegation that the UK, where the broadcasts were allegedly made, has found them criminal under UK law. Therefore, by Nigerian law, no court in Nigeria has jurisdiction from the onset to put Mazi Nnamdi Kanu on trial.”

IPOB, therefore, demands, “In view of the above, we call on the United Kingdom Government to publicly condemn the extraordinary rendition and continuing detention of our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

“We also urge the United Kingdom to invoke diplomatic and legal mechanisms to demand Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release, just as they should clarify its position to the British Parliament and public on how it justifies inaction where a British citizen is illegally abducted, tortured, and indefinitely detained in breach of international law.

“British silence in this case is not neutrality, it is complicity. The UK must choose between its stated commitment to human rights and the rule of law, and its political convenience in shielding a illegality of the state. It cannot do both. History will not forget where Britain stood in this defining moment”

Nigeria drowning in debt, may surpass N200trn by December — Peter Obi

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised serious concern over Nigeria’s rising debt burden, warning that the country may owe over N200 trillion by the end of 2025.

In a post made on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Peter Obi said Nigeria’s growing debt was unsustainable and dangerous for the future of the country. His warning came just a week after the Senate approved a fresh round of external and domestic borrowing.

According to him, the latest approvals include loans of $21 billion, €2.2 billion, and ¥15 billion, as well as a domestic bond of N750.98 billion and a €65 million grant.

Peter Obi explained that as of the first quarter of 2025, Nigeria’s public debt stood at N149.39 trillion. When the newly approved loans amounting to about N37.2 trillion are added, the total debt rises to approximately N187 trillion.

“With an already existing public debt of about N149.39 trillion as at the first quarter of 2025, adding the approved loans of about N37.2 trillion brings our current total debt to about N187 trillion, with concerns that our debt might likely be over N200 trillion by the end of 2025,” he said.

Obi criticised the government for accumulating debt without corresponding improvements in key sectors like education, healthcare, electricity, and security.

“We are accumulating exponential levels of unsustainable debt with little or nothing to show for it in critical areas,” he said.

He also raised alarm over Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio, stating that it has reached its highest level ever. Using the pre-rebased GDP of N269.2 trillion (around $180 billion), Obi said the debt now represents nearly 70 percent of the country’s economic size. Even after the GDP was rebased to N372.8 trillion (around $243.7 billion), the debt still amounts to over 50 percent of GDP.

While the government has increased security spending from N2.98 trillion in 2023 to N4.91 trillion in 2025, Obi noted that insecurity has worsened. He cited figures showing over 10,217 deaths and 672 villages sacked across the country in just two years.

Basic infrastructure also remains weak, he added. Out of Nigeria’s 195,000 kilometres of road network, only about 60,000 km are paved. Meanwhile, power supply continues to hover below 5,000 megawatts despite a population of over 200 million people.

Obi also highlighted worsening poverty and hunger. He said 133 million Nigerians about 63percent of the population are now classified as multi-dimensionally poor.

He referred to a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) report that recorded the deaths of 652 children in Northern Nigeria due to malnutrition, with Katsina State being one of the worst-hit areas.

“This is a country blessed with enormous resources, yet nobody should go to bed hungry,” he said. “A persistent deficiency in leadership has thrown the majority of our citizens into increasing poverty.”

He acknowledged that borrowing itself is not the problem, but stressed that loans must be used productively and transparently.

“Borrowing is not inherently bad if it is directed at productive, high-impact investments with clear outcomes,” he said. “But this pattern of borrowing without accountability and transformational impact is simply mortgaging the future of our children.”

Calling for urgent reform, Obi urged the government to cut waste, plug revenue leakages, and invest in human capital development.

“It is time to stop this fiscal indiscipline,” he declared. “We must build a New Nigeria, where leadership is responsible, development is people-centred, and every kobo borrowed or spent delivers measurable impact.”

Python, crocodile, other wild animals found in ex-AGF’s home evacuated to Kano zoo

A python, a crocodile, and other wild animals discovered in the residence of the former Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, have been evacuated to the Kano Zoo, following a wave of panic in surrounding communities.

Confirming the development, the Managing Director of Kano Zoo, Sadik Kura Muhammad, said the python, which had escaped from Idris’ home, was recovered and transferred to the zoo’s custody along with other animals.

The python’s escape triggered fear across Daneji and neighbouring areas, including Mandawari, Kabara, and Soron Dinki, with residents reporting sleepless nights until the animal was captured and removed.

Speaking on a local Kano radio station, Muhammad disclosed that Idris willingly handed over the animals to the authorities after the public uproar.

“There is a law called the Wild Animal Law, which permits individuals to keep certain wild animals in their homes. These may include endangered and non-endangered species,” he said.

He explained that although Idris had a valid licence to keep the animals, the zoo intervened due to public safety concerns.

“When I heard about the situation, I verified that he had a license and that the lion was still a cub, posing no harm. But once such animals reach a certain age, they must be transferred to the zoo,” Muhammad noted.

He added that the law governing the keeping of wild animals stipulates the need for a licence, proper housing, and care, and that endangered species such as parrots and vultures are to be kept strictly in zoos to aid conservation efforts.

“That’s why the license must be renewed annually to ensure safety. Before any animal becomes potentially harmful, it should already be in our custody,” he added.

The zoo director said his visit to the ex-AGF’s residence confirmed that none of the animals had become dangerous, but that they were retrieved after neighbours raised concerns.

“We collected them, and they are now safely housed in Kano Zoo. We conducted the evacuation at night, so there is no cause for alarm,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing and that Ahmed Idris has been invited for questioning.

Idris, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, was previously arrested in 2022 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly diverting N109.5 billion in public funds.

Ghana Protests: FG urges calm over alleged deportation threats to Nigerians

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), yesterday, has responded to a viral video circulating on social media showing a group of Ghanaians protesting and demanding the deportation of Nigerians from Ghana.

According to the viral video, the protestors accused some Nigerians of engaging in criminal activities and claimed their behaviour was incompatible with Ghanaian societal values.

In a statement, NIDCOM Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, condemned the generalisation of Nigerians as criminals, describing it as unfair and dangerous.

She stressed that while a few individuals may be involved in wrongdoing, the majority of Nigerians living in Ghana are law-abiding and contribute positively to the society.

She said, “Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves while those bad ones should be fish out and face the necessary sanctions.

“Ghana and Nigeria are like siamese twins. They are brothers and such in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration should continue to live in peace like brothers.”

The NIDCOM Boss thus appealed for calm and urged Nigerians living in Ghana not to be provoked or go into violence with anyone as the issue is being handled at the diplomatic level.

She advised anyone using inciteful words to desist henceforth both from Nigerians and Ghanaians as that is capable of escalating the matter.

Dabiri-Erewa also advised Nigerians to disregard the videos circulating that Nigerians’ shops and properties are destroyed by Ghanaians.

She said, “There is no evidence to that and we must at all cost prevent any reprisal attacks”.

She praised Ghanaian and Nigeria High Commissioners for their efforts to control the situation, adding that the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, has also been in touch with Ghanaian authorities and had taken some proactive measures.

Dangote drops suit challenging petroleum import permits issued to NNPCL, marketers

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has filed an application before the Federal High Court in Abuja to discontinue the suit it filed, seeking to nullify the import licences issued by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and several oil marketers for the importation of petroleum products.

In a notice of discontinuance signed by the plaintiff’s counsel,  Ogwu Onoja (SAN), Dangote Refinery withdrew the suit.

The discontinuance notice read, “Take notice that the plaintiff herein discontinues this suit against the defendants forthwith.”

No reason was disclosed in the application for the decision to withdraw the case.

It was  reported that Dangote Refinery, in an originating summons marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1324/2024, had asked the court to declare that NMDPRA violated Sections 317(8) and (9) of the Petroleum Industry Act by issuing licences for the importation of petroleum products.

The refinery argued that such licences should only be issued in cases of petroleum product shortfall and asked the court to hold that NMDPRA failed in its statutory duty under the PIA to encourage local refineries such as theirs.

The plaintiff (Dangote Refinery) in its originating summons dated September 6, 2024, sued NMDPRA, NNPCL, AYM Shafa Limited, A. A. Rano Limited, T. Time Petroleum Limited, 2015 Petroleum Limited, and Matrix Petroleum Services Limited as the first to seventh defendants respectively.

Dangote refinery asked the court to award N100 billion in damages against NMDPRA for issuing import licences to oil marketers and permitting the importation of petroleum products.

However, in a counter-affidavit dated November 5, 2024, filed by Ahmed Raji (SAN), three of the oil marketers—AYM Shafa Limited, A. A. Rano Limited, and Matrix Petroleum Services Limited—urged the court to dismiss the suit.

In their joint counter-affidavit, the marketers argued that granting Dangote Refinery’s application would be detrimental to Nigeria’s oil sector.

They contended that the plaintiff aimed to monopolise the oil sector, allowing it sole control of supply, distribution, and pricing—an arrangement they described as a recipe for disaster.

They warned that granting Dangote Refinery a monopoly in the petroleum industry would eliminate competitive pricing, worsening the country’s already fragile economy.

The marketers argued they are fully qualified to receive import licences from NMDPRA under Section 317(9) of the PIA.

They further explained that relying solely on Dangote Refinery as the producer and supplier of petroleum products would lead to continued price increases and jeopardise energy security.

They stressed that if the refinery were to break down, the country would face a severe energy crisis due to the lack of alternative sources.

Meanwhile, in its response, NMDPRA informed the court that the current production capacity of Dangote Refinery was insufficient to meet the country’s daily petroleum consumption needs.

It said that oil import licences were issued to NNPCL and other marketers to address shortfalls in supply.

In a counter-affidavit deposed to by a Senior Regulatory Officer, Idris Musa, NMDPRA argued that Dangote Refinery was not entitled to the reliefs sought. He added that, in line with Section 317(9) of the PIA, the Authority issued import licences to companies with proven international trading records to bridge the supply gap.

Musa said the agency is mandated to promote competition and prevent monopolies, denying allegations of conspiracy against the plaintiff.

The Authority maintained that denying other entities import licences based on Dangote Refinery’s production claims would harm competition, create a monopoly, and threaten the nation’s energy security.

It added that issuing multiple licences ensures fair competition, prevents abuse of dominant positions, and avoids monopolistic practices in the oil and gas sector.

NMDPRA also noted that Dangote Refinery’s products were not restricted to the Nigerian market and could be sold globally.

It rejected claims of a “grand conspiracy” against Dangote Refinery, stating that the plaintiff had failed to provide any evidence in support of the allegation.

In a preliminary objection, NNPCL, through its legal team led by Mr Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN), argued that the suit was incompetent and should be struck out for misidentification.

NNPCL urged the court to strike out its name from the suit, insisting that the plaintiff lacked the locus standi (legal right) to seek such reliefs.

The objection was supported by an affidavit dated March 18, 2025, deposed to by a litigation clerk in the law firm representing NNPCL.

The company also argued that Dangote Refinery had sued a non-existent entity.

However, Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed the objection, ruling that the error in the name did not render the suit defective. The court held that the defendants ought to have responded to the substantive claims before raising procedural objections.

Subsequently, the plaintiff filed a motion to amend its originating summons to correct the misnomer, which the court granted on  March 19.

The court had fixed September 29 for the hearing of the suit before Justice Mohammed Umar.

Hope not lost on remaining Chibok girls, Leah Sharibu -FG

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to securing the release of the remaining abducted Chibok schoolgirls and Leah Sharibu, assuring Nigerians that the girls have not been forgotten despite the passage of time.

A total of 276 girls were abducted by Boko Haram from the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, on April 14, 2014.

Eleven years later, 87 girls are still believed to be in captivity.

Similarly, Leah Sharibu was among the 110 schoolgirls kidnapped by Islamic State West Africa Province fighters from the Government Girls’ Science and Technical College, Dapchi, Yobe State, on February 19, 2018.

While others were released, Leah, the only Christian among them, remains in captivity.

Speaking during a multi-agency meeting on anti-kidnapping, organised in collaboration with the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency, in Abuja yesterday, the National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, stated that while some of the kidnapped girls have been rescued over the years, efforts to free the remaining ones have not relented.

He said, “Since when they were kidnapped, those who were rescued were not just rescued one time; It was a gradual process. Negotiations were done, trying to get them out. Operations were conducted.

“Luckily, at the beginning of that, towards the year after they were kidnapped, I was in the theatre, and I know what the military and intelligence agencies put into rescue the initial set of the Chibok girls.

“We haven’t given up hope on them; some of them were married to some of the insurgents. Some have come out. But let our focus not only be on the Chibok girls. There are others that have been kidnapped aid workers, Nigerian aid workers who were kidnapped. We’ve rescued some that are working for UNICEF.”

Laka noted that the silence in the media does not equate to inaction or indifference from the government.

He said, “We’ve rescued some that are working for UNHCR and IOM and so on. Do you understand? So, we haven’t relented on our efforts.

“There is the issue of this lady, Leah Shaibu. So, not because it’s not always in the press.

“We are not always talking about it. It doesn’t mean we don’t care. It doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten about them. We are still on it. Our prayer is that the whole 87 or 80 plus that are left will be rescued by God’s grace. ”

Laka also provided updates on the activities of the Multi-Agency Anti-Kidnap Fusion Cell, domiciled at the National Counterterrorism Centre, which was commissioned by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, on December 19, 2024.

He explained that since its activation, the cell has served as a central hub for intelligence sharing and coordination, supporting military and law enforcement agencies across the country to respond effectively to kidnapping incidents.

To strengthen its response, he said the centre has launched a state-level expansion initiative that involves deploying anti-kidnap liaison officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The primary purpose of the programme is to close the gap between national-level coordination and state-level response,” he said, noting that the effort aims to build direct operational linkages and ensure that real-time intelligence and local knowledge from field commands inform strategic national decisions.

Man allegedly kills mother-in-Law in Kogi

A 27-year-old man, Yayu Musa has been arrested by local vigilante group for allegedly attacking and killing his mother-in-law in Kogi State.

The incidence occurred on Friday at about 8 pm in Olla Community of Omala local government area of Kogi State.

A source from the community revealed that the suspect tricked his mother-in-law, a 50-year-old woman identified as Atayi Abdul that some people were harvesting her crops on her farm.

However, on arrival at the farm, the son-in-law attacked his mother-in-law with a machete, killing her on the farm.

A video recorded by the local vigilante who discovered the body of the victim, showed that the assailant butchered his victim’s body after killing her in cold blood.

The vigilante group thereafter launched a manhunt for the suspected killer and eventually apprehended him at a neighbouring community where he escaped after committing the crime.

Rivers reschedules council poll to August 30

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has rescheduled the local government election to August 30. The Chairman of RSIEC, Michael Odey, announced the new date during the official unveiling of the revised timetable for the election.

Odey explained the decision to postpone the elections was informed by the prevailing circumstances in the state. He cited constitutional provisions, which empowered the commission to reschedule elections in situations of crisis or potential unrest.

He said: “You can recall that a general stakeholders meeting was conveyed by the 6th commission, on Wednesday 5th March 2025, in which August 9th 2025, was proclaimed as a date of Local Government Council Elections in Rivers State prior to the advent of the emergency rule”.

But he said the 7th commission of RSIEC took proper cognisance of section 13 sub 5, of the RSIEC Law before fixing the new date.

“Therefore, by the powers vested upon the commission by this provision I hereby announce the postponement of the local government Council elections earlier fixed to hold on Saturday 9th August 2025, for a very obvious and incontrovertible reason,” he said.

The RSIEC Chairman further assured the public the commission was fully prepared to deliver a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.

He emphasised that the commission would strictly adhere to all electoral guidelines, and that voters would be able to cast their votes without fear or intimidation.

He said: “Today marks a critical milestone in our journey to ensure a transparent free, fair, credible and inclusive electoral process. Now, what we about to unveil today, is not merely, a timetable of event, it is a commitment to electoral due process, it is a commitment to electoral timeliness grounded in law, it is a commitment to fairness to all participants on the electoral process.

“We recognise that each one of you has a pivotal role to play in the process and we look forward to continued collaboration and vigilance, including your support as we thronged along to the election day.

“We in the 7th Commission, in accepting this national assignment and responsibility, we are not unaware of the weighty implications and huge significance particularly in the light of this incredibly extraordinary period, in the democratic evolution of Rivers State.

“Now, periodic elections all over the world is arguably the cornerstone, it is a hallmark, it is, if you like a condition precedence for a sustainable democracy.

“Furthermore, we are going to ensure that the prospective voters have a free and unfettered access to the electoral sites and venues and polling units to exercise their civil responsibility.

“We are also going to make sure that prospective voters are allowed freely, without intimidation or coercion to make their choices and we are going to make sure that the entire process is not transparent, free, fair, credible and inclusive, but that it is going to be seen as such”.

Odey vowed to enforce all the electoral laws and guidelines describing himself as a stickler to electoral rules.

He said: “Electoral laws and timelines are sacrosanct. As a matter of fact on a personal level, I have an incurable obsession for electoral due delegence, I am a stickler to that and I have no apologies at all. I am very stubborn in adherence to this regulations because the people of Rivers State desire nothing less

“And so, what I want to ask of the good people of Rivers State here and now, on behalf of the commission is to give us your support and cooperation, we will deliver to you the best of elections, we will do that in excellence, in honour, with dignity and integrity.”

Police arraign businessman for allegedly swindling client of N2.1m

A 36-year-old businessman, Eze Shedrach was yesterday, arraigned before a Life Camp Magistrates’ Court in Abuja, for allegedly swindling his customer of N2.1 million.

The police charged Shedrach of the address, opposite Mountain of Fire Church, Mpape, Abuja, with criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The reports said that the defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him by the police.

The Prosecutor, Mrs Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that sometime in July, the complainant, Mr Ikechukwu Obihara of Apo, Abuja, reported the case at Gwarimpa Police Station.

Nwachukwu told the court that the complainant entrusted the defendant with the sum of N5 million for the purchase of iron rods.

He said that all efforts made to recover the said money proved abortive.

The prosecutor claimed that the offences contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

The Magistrate, Ramilatu Halilu granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Halilu ordered that the sureties must be working in a reputable organisation and must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

By Nduka Val

A renowned philanthropist and a son of Ihitenansa in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo  State, residing  in Umuguma community over the years,  Sir Nnaomadiebube  Paschal Ezikeojiaku (Ogbuonyeisiogugu), has applauded the Imo state governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for re-awarding  the dilapidated  Umuguma road  to a reputable construction company, which has commenced work with a total  evacuation  of all the surrounding gutters, with a view to emptying all the contained flood into Nworie River, via the central   tunnel . He therefore assured the people of Umugumaof  the  true commitment of the contractor to  complete the work on or before the end of this year,  as  directed by the governor himself.

Ogbuonyeisiogugu, as he is traditionally known and addressed,   expressed his optimism that the said construction company will deliver a solid job when completed  and  the road  will periodically be followed with a maintenance exercise through the Imo Rural Road Maintenance Agency(IRROMA), where he serves as a member. According to the Ihitenansa born

humanitarian,  the expected  road maintenance to be provided by IRROMA will always enhance its durability.

Sir Ezikeojiaku made this disclosure to some newsmen last weekend during an interaction at the Umuguma Central School, venue of this year’s Igba Nta Umuguma festival that attracted a good number of people from various places to witness such annual celebration.

Stretching further, Chief Ezikeojiaku used same interaction to describe Igba Nta Umuguma festival as a special culture of the people which resembles the New Yam Festival of Mbaise which is   annually held on every 15th Day of August.

Reacting to the observed failure of the previous Planning Committees of Nta Festival of Umuguma to embark on some meaningful projects with the generated fund, he added that  Nta festival remains an acceptable culture in Umuguma which is not designed  for fund raising, but organized  to exhibit a culture that was bequeathed  to the present day generation by their forefathers, calling on the children of the community to join in promoting it. He, therefore submitted that any little money   realized from the activity can be used to support those Committees to tackle some of the incurred  financial expenditures during its celebration and not for project execution.

He added that this year’s turn out for the Nta festival was not truly impressive  compared to the previous exercise, advising the traditional ruler, HRH Eze George Ugorji, to constitute a timely Nta Planning Committee  for the next year’s celebration, so as to enable them have effective planning of programmes that will improve attendance.

The Orsu born Umuguma resident maintained that he was joyious with the contributions of the chairman of this year’s Organizing Committee, Elder Barr. Remond E. Onyemechara and his team for delivering a successful event.

Ezikeojiaku posited that it was his proven overt kindness to the people of Umuguma  and beyond since his settlement therein that actually elicited their love and embrace for him, without any form of discrimination, asserting that such an open accommodation has provided him the opportunity of serving as both former and current Secretary to the Eze’s Cabinet. He re-emphasized that his integration into the activities of Umuguma community has prooelled him to know more about their traditions, promising not to deviate from it.

IG decries ‘humiliating conditions” of retired officers under CPS

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, yesterday said most retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme are living in humiliating conditions, a situation that has instilled fear in serving officers about their future.

He stated this during a meeting with senior police officers in Abuja.

Egbetokun said the living conditions of retired officers were unacceptable given the sacrifices they made in service.

He said, “One area I remain deeply committed to is the welfare of our retired officers under the Contributory Pensions Scheme, CPS. Their post-service condition is heartbreaking and morally unacceptable.

“Today, most retired officers of the Nigerian Police Force live in conditions that are not only unacceptable but humiliating, given the sacrifices they made in service to the nation. Their monthly pension under the CPS is maximally low and roughly inadequate to meet even the most basic needs. Many can no longer afford health care, housing, or a life of dignity.”

He said the poor state of retirees was affecting the morale of serving officers.

“This has turned retirement into a period of hardship and regret, eroding the confidence of serving officers, who now see their own future with fear rather than hope. Among serving officers, there exists a growing and deep-rooted anxiety, born from the belief, rightly or wrongly, that retirement is a descent into hardship. This fear has become so pervasive that it is having a noticeable demoralising effect on morale across ranks,” he stated.

Egbetokun noted that efforts to sensitise officers about the CPS have been misunderstood.

“Attempts made to educate them on the operation of the Contributory Pensions Scheme have been taken as attempts to keep them in perpetual bondage of the CPS,” he said.

He stated that the police leadership had initiated efforts to augment the pension of retired officers and had presented its position to the National Assembly during the public hearing of the bill seeking to exempt the police from the scheme.

“This stance was further reinforced in my recent letter to the National Assembly. While the agitation for our exit from the Contributory Pensions Scheme is just and deeply rooted in lived realities, it is imperative that our actions are guided by prudence and strategy,” he added.

Egbetokun, however, cautioned against hasty decisions. He noted that his earlier comments were misinterpreted as opposition to exiting the scheme.

“I sounded a caution that my people should look well before they jump into any exit. There may be a booby trap in the bill. So what is the use in exiting out of this bill and jumping into an uncertainty? Some people have interpreted that to mean that I don’t want the police to exit. That is not true. But people often know that that’s not exactly what it meant,” he said.

He also urged police commanders to engage with serving and retired officers to sensitise them on ongoing efforts by the police leadership to improve their welfare.

Egbetokun also announced a new welfare incentive aimed at boosting morale among serving officers.  He said any officer who wins the Inspector-General’s award for exceptional professionalism twice consecutively would be considered for accelerated promotion.

Egbetokun stated that the initiative was designed to promote a culture of excellence, creativity, and patriotism within the Force.

He said, “To further boost morale amongst serving officers, I am proud to announce a new welfare incentive. Any officer who wins the IDP’s award for exceptional professionalism twice consecutively will now be considered for accelerated promotion. This is not just a reward, it is a call to excellence, creativity, and patriotism.

“We are building a culture where excellence is not just applauded but advanced. The good is here. A motivated force is an effective force. Let us also recognise that while past efforts are commendable, they are not enough. Crime does not rest. Criminals do not pause.”

Asked to comment on remarks by a former Inspector-General criticising him, Egbetokun said, “For those who know me, I believe in service discipline. I would therefore not want to join issues with him.”

2027: No vacancy in Aso Rock, Yilwatda tells ADC, other opposition parties

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has declared that there will be no vacancy in the Presidency come 2027, urging opposition parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, to abandon their aspirations of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Yilwatda made the declaration yesterday while addressing members of the APC League of Professionals during a solidarity visit to the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

He asserted that the APC would dominate the 2027 general elections, leaving no room for any opposition party to gain ground.

Highlighting the achievements of the Tinubu administration under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Yilwatda pointed to initiatives such as the student loan programme, grants to the Bank of Agriculture to enhance food security, and various economic empowerment schemes as clear evidence of the administration’s commitment to national development.

“These impactful programmes have touched the lives of ordinary Nigerians, and they form the foundation of our confidence going into the next election,” he said.

“Today, the child of the poorest man in Nigeria can now go to school to the peak without borrowing from anywhere. The government has made provision for that. This is the only time we’ve had that in the history of Nigeria. The government has dropped N1.5 billion Naira in the Bank of Agriculture (BOA) to support young men who want to go into agriculture.

“Never before, never before, never before have we had this opportunity. We have the youth fund being given to the youth. Never before has any government done this. And I can tell you that the opportunity for the young people is right under our president.

“Our manifesto targets people like you. The Renew Hope Agenda targets people like you. I look forward to working with you to ensure that 2027 will deliver the president, will deliver the governors, and will deliver the senators, the House of Assemblies, and the House of Representatives members.”

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Hon. Marlin Daniel, congratulated Yilwatda on his emergence as National Chairman and expressed confidence in his capacity to reposition the party.

“We know your contributions before you became a politician, and we know that you will deliver for this party. We want to thank you, appreciate you, and welcome you to your new office,” he said.

Kidnappers threaten to kill six abducted law students over unpaid ransom

The abductors of six Nigerian Law School students have reportedly threatened to execute the victims if the ransom demanded is not paid, it has learnt.

The students were abducted in Benue State on Saturday, July 26, while travelling from Onitsha, Anambra State, to the Yola campus of the Nigerian Law School in Adamawa State.

They were reportedly en route to resume academic activities following their court externship break, with lectures scheduled to recommence on Monday, July 28.

The kidnapped students were identified by a fellow law student, Damilare Adenola, as Rev. Ernest Okafor, Ogbuka Fabian, Nwamma Philip, Okechukwu Obadiegwu, Obalem Emmanuel, and Obiorah David.

Confirming the incident to our correspondent, a student leader at the Yola campus said the victims were last heard from shortly before entering a volatile stretch of the road between Benue and Nasarawa states.

Sources at the Yola campus revealed that the suspected gunmen have made contact with families and colleagues of the victims, initially demanding N20m per student for their release.

However, the demand has since doubled.

A source privy to a phone conversation between the kidnappers and one of the students told our correspondent by telephone on Monday evening that the abductors were now demanding N50m and had issued threats to kill the students if their conditions were not met.

“They said they will kill them if we refuse to pay the ransom.

“They warned us not to involve the security operatives. They said they can hear everything happening and insisted that if we want them alive, we must stay silent and comply,” the source said. While the Adamawa State Police Command confirmed it was aware of the abduction, its spokesperson, Yahaya Suleiman, told our reporter on Sunday that the command was working with its Benue counterpart to locate and rescue the victims. However, efforts to reach the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Catherine Anene, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

This incident marked another tragic chapter in a series of abductions targeting Nigerian Law School students. In 2022, two students from the Agbani campus in Enugu State were kidnapped while shopping at the Eke Agbani market.

They were later taken to an unknown destination by the armed assailants.

‘Nigerians must go,’ protest rocks Ghana

…As host country accuses Nigerians of prostitution, ritual killings

…FG urges calm over alleged deportation threats

Some Ghanaians have protested against Nigerians for allegedly engaging in mass prostitution and ritual killings in their country.

In a viral video yesterday, the protesters in their large numbers, were seen wielding placards with various inscriptions such as “Armed robbery and violent attacks must stop; “Our health at stake due to mass prostitution; “Who protects the right and freedom of Ghanaians; “Nigerians are kidnapping and using people for rituals; “Our kids are getting missing because of Igbos,” among others.

They also displayed a picture of a man who was allegedly killed by a Nigerian in the Accra area of the country.

Speaking in the video, a lady in her mid-30s said Nigerians must go because of their any howness in their country.

“Nigerians must go because you can’t be in someone’s country and be doing anyhow. Nigerians must go,” she yelled.

Another protester said Nigerians have taken over their major markets and are perpetrating evil of sorts in their country.

“These Igbo, they are in every part of the country and have targeted our markets. Not just Igbo, Nigerians are in almost every village, and our laws have not allowed foreigners to engage in real dealings. They are perpetrating evil in our country. They even have a Igbo king in Ghana. They have hijacked our lands. It is just a matter of time; we will conquer them and take over our country,” he stressed.

It would be recalled that a similar occurrence popularly christened “Ghana must go” happened in 1983 when the Nigerian government under President Shehu Shagari enacted a directive ordering about two million undocumented immigrants, many of whom were Ghanaians, to leave the country.

“If they don’t leave, they should be arrested, tried and sent back to their homes.

“Illegal immigrants, under normal circumstances, should not be given any notice whatsoever. If you break a law, then you have to pay for it,” the President had said.

This action gave birth to a checked bag called “Ghana must go” into which the Ghanaians packed their belongings, and in turn became a symbol of exclusion and intolerance.

As of the time of filing this report, the Ghanaian government has yet to comment on the situation and the plight of their countrymen on returning Nigerians to their country, irrespective of their status.

Food price cut: Nigerian farmers slam Tinubu for encouraging rice, maize imports

Nigerian farmers have raised concerns over the takeover of imported rice and maize in the country’s markets at the expense of locally made grains.

Farmers expressed their frustration in separate statements on X, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policy is killing local cultivation of maize and rice.

The development came as rice and maize prices dropped across Nigerian markets nationwide.

Farmers have attributed the reduction in the price of rice and maize to the surplus import of the products into the country.

It would be recalled that the Federal Government in July last year announced a 150-day import waiver for rice, maize, and other staple foods.

The policy had resulted in a drop in the prices of food, the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, said in his declaration of first-quarter revenue.

It was originally designed for July to December 2024 and has led to a drop in some food items.

A market survey found that a 50-kilogramme bag of rice costs N65,000 to N68,000, and maize sells for N35,000 to N37,000 per bag, while foreign ones cost N83,000 per bag.

This has reduced the profit margin for local rice and maize farmers, resulting in advocacy against the products’ continued production in Nigeria.

Worsening the situation is the surge in the price of fertilisers, which has resulted in increased cost of production and has further compounded bottom-line price issues.

Speaking on the development in an interview with our correspondent, the Lead City University in Ibadan, Prof. Godwin Oyedokun, said favourable imports of rice and maize cause oversupply in the market and would impact local farmers who struggle to compete with imported goods.

“The concerns of Nigerian farmers regarding the surge in imports of grains like maize and rice are quite valid. When government policies favour imports, it can lead to an oversupply in the market, which often drives prices down and negatively impacts local farmers who struggle to compete with imported goods.

As a solution, Oyedokun urged the Nigerian government to address concerns raised by Nigerian farmers.

“To address these complaints, it’s important to engage in a dialogue with farmers to understand their perspectives and challenges. Considering the following points can be beneficial:

“Support for Local Production: Advocating for policies that incentivize local grain production, such as subsidies, access to credit, and investment in agricultural technology, can help level the playing field.

“Import Tariffs: Implementing or increasing tariffs on imported grains could protect local farmers and encourage consumers to buy local produce.

“Quality Control: Ensuring that imported grains meet certain quality standards can help maintain consumer confidence in local products and encourage purchases from local farmers.

“Market Access: Facilitating better access for farmers to markets can help them get fair prices for their products, reducing the impact of imports on their livelihoods.

“Education and Training: Providing farmers with resources and training on modern agricultural practices can improve productivity and help them compete more effectively.

“Ultimately, a balanced approach that considers both the needs of consumers and the sustainability of local agriculture is essential for long-term food security and economic stability in Nigeria. Listening to farmers and involving them in the decision-making process can lead to more effective policies that benefit everyone,” he told newsmen.

The reports said that in June 2025, headline inflation dropped to 22.22 percent, but food inflation rose to 21.97 percent.

You can be debarred for misconduct – Ex-Chief Judge warns young lawyers

A former Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Justice Ishaq Bello, has warned young lawyers against acts of misconduct, which he said could lead to their being stopped from practicing law.

Justice Bello, who spoke at an inaugural seminar organised for young lawyers by the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Mentorship Committee, warned the new wigs to avoid practices that could bring them before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, LPDC.

Sharing his experience as a young lawyer, the former chief judge said, “You can be stopped from practicing law, if you engage in unwholesome practices.

“I hope we will not meet at the LPDC. You have qualified as a lawyer but you can be stopped from practicing.”

Chairman of the NBA Mentorship Committee, Attorney-General of Ondo State and Commissioner of Justice, KayodeAjulo, SAN, commended NBA President, MaziAfamOsigwe, for coming up with the idea of seminar for the young lawyers.

Ajulo noted that the mentorship programme is not only for new wigs but also for lawyers who want to progress and succeed in the law profession.

“This mentorship programme is not only for new wigs, it’s for all lawyers but the major concentration is for the new wigs. It is for all lawyers, especially, lawyers that are aspiring to be great. After your graduation from law school, you need mentorship to progress and make good success in this ptofession.

“This is the inaugural programme for this new wigs and I also happen to be the first Chairman of the Mentorship Committee. The NBA President, MaziAfamOsigwe, in his wisdom, chose me to chair this committee. I commend the president for his thoughtfulness on this initiative of bringing ourselves together to mentor these new wigs.”
