Akpabio

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio

The Federal Government has filed a six-count charge against nine defendants over allegations bordering on disseminating false information on the recent rumour about the impeachment of Senate President, Godwil Akpabio.

The charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/555/2024, was filed at a Federal High Court in Abuja on Oct. 21 by the Deputy Director, Public Prosecution of the Federation, A. A. Yusuf.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the defendants were alleged to have published the false information on Oct. 16 that the Department of State Services (DSS) laid siege to the National Assembly, with a view to effecting the impeachment of Akpabio.

The FG sued the Incorporated Trustee of Order Paper (on whose online platform the false information was allegedly published), Oke Epia (Founder/Publisher and Executive Director of Order Paper), and Tony Okeke Ofodile (Head of Operations) as 1st to 3rd defendants.

Also joined as 4th and 5th defendants were Edna Bill Ulaeto (Admin/Finance Executive) and Elizabeth Atime (National Assembly lead reporter, author of report).

Others are Regina Udo (Coordinator of Programmes), Leah Twaki (Social Media Executive), Idongesit Joseph Ekoh (Admin Support) and Edoesomi Sharon Omonegho (National Assembly correspondent) as 6th to 9th defendants respectively.

In count one, the prosecution accused the Order Paper (Incorporated Trustee), of Suit C12, Halima Plaza, Plot 1496, Balanga Street, Area 11, Garki, Abuja, through its agents; Oke Epia, Tony Okeke Ofordile, Edna Bill Ulacto, and Elizabeth Atime, and others at large, of publishing a false information via its online platform.

They were said to have on or about Oct. 16 alleged that “the DSS laid siege to the National Assembly over plans to impeach the Senate President, which you knew to be false, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 24(1)(a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act 2015 and punishable under the same section.”

The defendants and others at large, in count two, were alleged to have intentionally published defamatory statements regarding the DSS and Sen. Akpabio, on their online platform.

The case is yet to be assigned to a judge as at the time of filing this report.

Aviation Minister Keyamo confirms Rivers helicopter crash

keyamo

The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has confirmed the crash of a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter near Port Harcourt on Thursday, October 24.

The aircraft, operated by East Wind Aviation, went down in the Atlantic Ocean around 11:22 am while flying from the Port Harcourt Military Base to the NUIMANTAN oil rig.

In a statement, the Federal Ministry of Aviation reported that eight people were on board the helicopter at the time of the accident. As of now, three bodies have been recovered, and search and rescue operations were ongoing.

Keyamo has assured that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has been notified, and emergency response teams, including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), are actively involved.

“We are using all available resources to plot the location of the accident and rescue survivors,” the ministry stated, noting the absence of a signal from the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT).

To assist in the search efforts, authorities have deployed military support and low-flying aircraft. Keyamo is personally overseeing the operations to ensure effective coordination among all agencies involved.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those on board, and we are committed to minimizing casualties,” he stated, reiterating the Ministry’s dedication to supporting affected families during this tragic time.

Libya, Sahel conflicts fuel arms proliferation in Nigeria – DHQ

The Defence Headquarters on Thursday explained how non-state actors have been obtaining arms.

According to the military high command, the Libyan conflict and instability in the Sahel have allowed arms to flow into Nigeria, exacerbating the country’s insurgency and terrorism crisis.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, disclosed this in response to allegations made by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who had said a sizable number of illicit arms used to commit crimes in the country originally belonged to the government.

Ribadu accused soldiers and policemen of selling weapons to criminal elements in the country.

However, while fielding questions from journalists, Buba attributed the availability of these weapons primarily to the Libyan and Sahel crisis.

He said, “To your question about the proliferation of arms within our country, and the allegation that some of those arms are from security forces. This is what I can tell you about it. When we talk about proliferation of arms, first you have to look at what happened in Libya years ago and in the Sahel.

“Now, this gave the opportunity for arms to get into the wrong hands and then filtered into our country, which worsened the issue of insurgency and terrorism that we were faced with in the country. That is one. “

Buba also stated that another way terrorists have been getting their arms is by attacking security agencies and carting away their rifles.

He said, “Two, is from the textbook. The textbook tells you that part of the ways insurgents and terrorists get arms is to attack security forces and take arms from them. This is a textbook, meaning that it is proven all over the world. So if it has happened here in Nigeria, it is not a surprise, as we have seen that several of our troops have been ambushed or killed and their arms taken.”

Buba, however, said the military has consistently responded to such incidents with decisive countermeasures.

“But what we have done is that in every such instance, we have made the terrorists pay a greater price than we have been forced to pay in such circumstances,” he said.

Withdraw old notes before December deadline, Reps tell CBN

The House of Representatives has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to begin the gradual withdrawal of old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes from circulation ahead of the December 31, 2024 deadline.

During a plenary session on Thursday, lawmakers also urged the CBN to increase the issuance of the new banknotes to ensure a smooth transition.

This resolution followed a motion of urgent national importance moved by Rep Afam Ogene, who expressed concern over the lack of public awareness on the looming deadline.

Ogene noted that with less than two months to go, the CBN has not initiated any meaningful public sensitization on the change, a crucial step to avoid a repeat of the 2023 chaos when the currency switch caused widespread hardship.

Ogene further emphasized that if the CBN does not act promptly, Nigerians may face severe difficulties as the old notes cease to be legal tender on January 1, 2025. He recalled the litigation and public frustration during the 2023 currency transition and stressed that proactive public awareness campaigns, such as jingles, radio, television, and social media postings, should have commenced months ago.

The House also directed the CBN to order commercial banks to stop disbursing old notes and only release the new currency, urging a gradual phase-out of the old notes.

The House Committee on Banking Regulations was instructed to ensure compliance and report back within 21 days.

2.3 million children at risk of polio in Nigeria – UNICEF

UNICEF logo

The United Nations Children’s Fund, (UNICEF), has said that nearly 2.3 million children in Nigeria have not received routine immunisation (zero dose), making them to be at risk of polio outbreak.

The UNICEF’s Chief of Bauchi Field Office, Dr. Nuzhat Rafique, disclosed this during an awareness road walk in Bauchi on Thursday to commemorate this year’s World Polio Day.

According to her, out of this figure, about 22,000 children in Bauchi State have not received routine immunisation thereby risking polio outbreak.

“For over two decades, UNICEF has supported Bauchi state in its Polio Eradication Initiatives and Immunisation Plus Days campaigns.

“This year alone, we have supported three state with Polio Outbreak Response campaigns and two targeted local Outbreak Response in four LGAs with funding for vaccine, logistics, social mobilisation and technical assistance.

“It is heartwarming to note that Bauchi has been free of wild polio virus since the last case in 2013; however, we are still contending with the variant form of the virus.’’

Rafique said that in spite of the success, 2.3 million children in Nigeria and around 22,000 children in Bauchi State had not received routine immunisation.

She said that the outbreaks of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus continue to persist

She further said that child deaths and physical disabilities caused by polio could be banished from the world if the stakeholders continued to put all hands on deck to stop the outbreaks.

The UNICEF boss said every child in every household must receive the vaccine in order to completely eliminate polio, adding, ‘’unfortunately, thousands of children are still missing out.

“The global decline in childhood immunisation coverage has led to rising outbreaks, even in countries that have been polio-free for decades.

“The battle against polio is particularly difficult in the most challenging environments, yet eradication is attainable.

“UNICEF delivers over one billion doses of polio vaccines each year, the largest portion of global vaccine deliveries,” she said.

Rafique further urged government at all levels to prioritise vaccination for all children against polio, especially in hard-to-reach areas and communities with low immunisation rates.

She urged the government to keep polio eradication on the front burner of political discourse while leveraging innovative solutions and coordinated actions to enhance the quality of immunisation campaigns.

“We ask the Bauchi Emirate Council to support the mobilisation of parents and caregivers to avail their children to benefit from vaccinations and to support the resolution of non-compliance during and after campaigns,” she urged.

South-West People Will Not Vote APC Again In 2027 Elections; We Are Now Wiser — Oyo Governor Makinde

Governor Makinde said the decision was due to the hardship inflicted on Nigerians by the party.

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has claimed the people of the South-West will not vote for the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections.

Governor Makinde said the decision was due to the hardship inflicted on Nigerians by the party.

Makinde, who is the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party in the South-West, explained that Yoruba people who are predominantly residents of all states that make up the southwest region had realised their mistake for supporting Tinubu during the 2023 general elections.

Meanwhile, National Chairman of APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, had during a stakeholders meeting to reconcile the aggrieved party leaders, declared that the APC would capture the South-West for President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Also, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who was on a campaign tour in Ese Odo LGA, had said the opposition PDP was dead in the state, noting that most of the opposition leaders in Ondo were back in APC.

Apparently referring to both Ganduje and Aiyedatiwa, Makinde said the PDP still had control of the South-West, saying the APC national chairman would be shocked with the support from the people for the main opposition party.

“If wishes were horses, everybody would be riding it. I can tell you that the people of the South-West of Nigeria are wiser and especially in Ondo State. On November 16, they will tell him (Ganduje) that Ondo State and indeed South-West is for the PDP,” he said on Thursday during a campaign in Ondo State.

Makinde added, “Talk, they say is cheap. You can say whatever you like with your mouth but the people of Ondo State, they will speak loud and clear on November 16, 2024 and then all of us in this country will hear it loud and clear.”

Tinubu govt reveals plans to de-dollarize Nigerian economy

tinubu

The federal government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has disclosed that plans are ongoing to significantly reduce the use of dollars in the Nigerian economy.

According to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, the focus of the current administration is to de-dollarise the Nigerian economy and strengthen the local currency.

Edun made this known on Wednesday while speaking at a Global Investors’ Forum on the sidelines of the World Bank/International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meeting in Washington DC.

He said the move was part of the economic reforms embarked upon by the Tinubu administration.

“There is also a move to de-dollarise the Nigerian economy,” Edun said, adding that local providers of services, regulators, and others are being asked to “invoice in Naira, rather than dollars.”

“It reduces the value for dollar and of course increases the demand for Naira,” he explained.

The Minister also highlighted that the removal of subsidies on petrol and foreign exchange would make more funds available to the government for other projects.

“I think we must not miss the fact that the number one source of foreign exchange revenue to Nigeria is oil production and they are facing the direction that is positive and should yield very good results in the near time,” he added.

According to J.P. Morgan, “De-dollarisation entails a significant reduction in the use of dollars in world trade and financial transactions, decreasing national, institutional and corporate demand for the greenback.”

Varsity lecturers suspend strike after six weeks

ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University Chapter has suspended its six-week strike over a litany of unmet demands including an improved welfare package.

The lecturers suspended their strike which commenced on September 11, 2024, after a meeting held on October 24, 2024.

In a notice on Thursday, the varsity chapter of ASUU said the industrial action was put on hold based on the agreement with the state government.

The notice was co-signed by Suleiman Jauro, the state ASUU Chairperson, and Mustapha Muhammad, the union’s state secretary.

They said the union reviewed an “update on the negotiation between the State Government Negotiation Committee and the branch”

Academic activities are to resume immediately.

Abia pensioners demand review of agreement on arrears, gratuities

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Abia State chapter, has urged the state government to revisit the Memorandum of Agreement concerning the payment of pension arrears and gratuities.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Elder Chukwuemeka Irondi, and Secretary, Elder Uma Kalu, on Thursday, the union emphasized that at no point was any discussion held about waiving their entitlements, including gratuities.

The union pointed out that while Governor Alex Otti cleared pension arrears from June 2023 to March 2024, the 45 months of unpaid pension arrears owed by the previous administration remain unsettled.

Despite commending the governor for the regular payment of monthly pensions, the union criticized the unilateral nature of the MoA, claiming it was influenced by ill-advised recommendations from top aides, including former Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Michael Akpara, and Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi.

The statement read, “The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Abia State Council, insists on a serious review of the so-called Memorandum of Agreement, particularly Article 7(a) and (b), as crafted by agents of the state government.”

The union further clarified that the present administration has not addressed the 45 months of unpaid pension arrears inherited from the previous government.

It added, “The present administration only cleared arrears of 10 months (June 2023 – March 2024), which it incurred, and some pensioners have yet to receive even these payments. The so-called ex gratia payments by the governor are ambiguous, as they were not discussed with the union.”

The NUP also dismissed claims by the governor that the administration had cleared a decade of pension arrears, stating, “The governor’s assertion of having cleared 10 years of arrears is baseless and has no support within the union.”

The union’s statement underscores ongoing dissatisfaction among pensioners over the handling of their dues and calls for a more transparent and inclusive approach in settling the arrears and gratuities.

Kidnap gang on Port Harcourt-Owerri Road arrested by Rivers police command

The Rivers State police command says it has just fought a battle to burst a gang that specialises in setting up roadblocks along the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road and abducting passengers.

The new police commissioner, Mustapha Bala, said the modus operandi of the gang was to set up illegal roadblocks at strategic points along the expressway before attacking motorists at gunpoint and taking innocent people hostage for ransom.

When the police struck, they arrested two suspects on October 17, 2024, through the Anti-Kidnapping Unit while the third suspect, who was identified as the gang leader was arrested at Egbeda on October, 19, 2024.

The police said the suspects have confessed to crimes of Kidnapping, and that their arrest was made possible after the Police traced their whereabouts through intelligence gathered, saying further investigations were ongoing to arrest their remaining accomplices and retrieve their operational weapons as well as uncover the full extent of their criminal network.

The arrest is expected to bring some calm on the busy Owerri Road from Port Harcourt which serves as a gateway from most South-South states to Imo, Anambara, Asaba, Lagos, and western Nigeria.

The police boss told newsmen that the Owerri Road success came from intensified crackdown on criminal activities along the route, which has been a hotspot for violent attacks on motorists. He accused the group of being behind the abduction of a National Youth Service Corps NYSC) member and two others along the Elele/Omerelu axis of the expressway.

The police assured the public of its renewed vigilance in ensuring the safety of all road users along the Port Harcourt-Owerri Expressway, urging citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

The police also reported successful conduct of two coordinated operations in the Elechi Beach and Nanka waterfront areas, targeting criminal hideouts believed to be hubs for illegal activities.

Acting on credible intelligence, the police stated, operatives of the C4i Strike Force (Octopus) launched strategic raids in both locations, leading to the arrest of a notorious armed robber, and the recovery of one vehicle, arms and ammunition.

She explained that while one of the robbers pursued her, the other two chased after the girl going to church. As she hid in the bush, one of the robbers came toward her location, apparently trying to find her.

During this chaos, a local security guard emerged and shot at the robber, killing him, while the other two fled.

It was gathered that the corpse of the robber was still lying in the area at the time of filing this report.

Ebonyi records 28 cholera deaths

Not fewer than twenty-eight (28) persons have died from among 386 cases of cholera since its outbreak in Ebonyi State on September 24, 2024.

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Moses Ekuma, made the disclosure during the donation of medical commodities by the Governor’s wife, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, to the General Hospital in Iboko, Izzi local government area of the state.

Ekuma maintained that most deaths occurred at home before the emergency response team from the ministry were informed.

He attributed the outbreaks to contaminated water, poor sanitation, and improper disposal of refuse, among other factors.

The Commissioner added that the state government has designated six treatment centres across the state to tackle the outbreak.

He noted that the donation was made through Mrs Nwifuru’s pet project, Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Foundation (BERWO), disclosing that the items donated include home purification tablets, hand sanitisers, intravenous infusion, and oral rehydration salt.

The commissioner also commended the effort of the governor’s wife against the epidemic.

In her address, Mrs Nwifuru commiserated with families of the victims and encouraged them not to lose hope, adding that the visit was aimed at identifying the factors contributing to the spread of the disease.

“The sight of these people battling cholera is a reminder that we must do more to protect our communities from infectious diseases,” she said.

Project Medical Referral of Doctors-without-Borders, Daniel Hernandis, decried the outbreak’s level, stating that over half of the cases were recorded in Izzi local government area.

Hernandis appreciated the support from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and healthcare workers on the frontlines.

Clearing agents groan as NAFDAC strike disrupts port operations

Clearing agents at Nigerian Ports have decried the ongoing strike by workers of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies, an affiliate of the Trade Union Congress representing NAFDAC employees, declared an indefinite strike due to unresolved promotion controversies and welfare concerns.

Speaking on the implications of the strike in an interview with PUNCH Online on Sunday, one of the affected clearing agents, Olatoye Otubade, stated that it had disrupted operations across the sector, particularly for those handling shipments of regulated items such as drugs, cosmetics, and chemicals.

He said, “Yes, it has significantly affected most of the clearing groups. There are certain procedures that specific items need to go through with NAFDAC. They are a crucial part of the maritime and clearing logistics sector in this economy.”

Otubade further noted that inspections and examinations must be completed before clearance for goods under NAFDAC’s purview.

He asserted that due to the strike, inspection processes have been halted, leaving many containers stranded at terminals and accumulating charges.

“Containers sitting at the terminal are incurring charges—daily shipping costs, terminal fees, and other expenses. It’s frustrating because these charges continue to accrue, and no one is waiving them, even though the delays are beyond our control. This, in turn, affects manufacturers and the overall economy. The situation is really putting pressure on us,” he added.

Another agent, who gave his name as Seun, said, “Come to the ports. Their offices are all locked, so we cannot carry out any operations. Right now, we are not able to do anything. They should please resolve their issues; the strike is a huge loss for us.”

In a chat with our correspondent, NAFDAC’s Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, said efforts are ongoing to meet the striking workers’ demands.

He said, “The matter has been taken up at the ministerial level. Their demands have been transferred to the Head of Service. It is not that we are not doing anything. The union should take the agents and Nigerians into consideration. They should know that their absence on duty could allow contraband products to be smuggled into the country. They should be magnanimous in their demands.”

Akintola also noted that there must be a reason for the DG not meeting the union’s executives physically.

Army debunks COAS’ death rumours

The Nigerian Army on Sunday refuted reports circulating that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has passed away.

Several reports, originating from a social media post by a Nigerian journalist, announced the death of the Army chief, which quickly went viral.

The journalist claimed that Lagbaja had died of cancer 48 hours earlier.

The post read: “The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has died. Lagbaja died in an undisclosed hospital overseas nearly 48 hours ago from stage three cancer, according to a senior government official.

“The death of the Chief of Army Staff has been kept secret due to intense lobbying by some generals who wish to take the position.

“Lagbaja, born on 28 February 1968 in Ilobu, Osun State, was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023 as the 27th Chief of Army Staff.”

In response to the post on X, the Nigerian Army labelled it as fake news.

However, sources at the Army Headquarters confirmed to our correspondent that the Army Chief was critically ill.

One source stated, “The COAS is not dead. He is only critically ill at the moment. We should be praying for him at this critical time and not spreading rumours of his death.”

Another source said that he had travelled abroad for medical treatment.

“He is out of the country for treatment. I have not heard of his death from anyone close to him. There is no way such information could be hidden.

The phone number of the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu was switched off, and he had yet to respond to a message sent to him regarding the matter.

PSN bestows best indigenous company on Evergreen Pharmaceutical Company

By Jude Onyenedogha

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Imo State branch has recognized the enormous impact of the Evergreen Pharmaceutical Company, to the economic development of Imo State and Nigeria, with an award of Best Indigenous Manufacturing Company in Imo State.

This award was bestowed on the Company during the 2024 edition of the annual conference and pharmacy week of the society, held last Thursday, at the Rockview Hotel, Owerri, Imo State, with the theme: Pharmacy; Innovating Advanced Universal and Holistic Healthcare.

Presenting the award, the chairman, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Imo State, Dr. Nobert Ajaero lauded management of the company for their leading and transformational role in the pharmaceutical industry of not only Imo State, but Nigeria and Africa at large.

Responding after receiving the award, on behalf of the company, the Managing Director, Dr. Declan Unogu, while appreciating PSN, said the company sees the award purely as a challenge to do more, promising that it will spur management and staff to deliver more impactful results

He called on government to provide enabling environment, including investment in the pharmaceutical industry, to enable pharmacists in the state and country at large to perform to their optimum.

Dr. Unogu said management of the Evergreen Pharmaceutical Company took up the challenge to come back to Nigeria in 2012, with the conviction that “if all of us should run away, nobody will do it for us. So I had to come back to Nigeria”.

He said the passion to save lives was the driving force and motivation to continue to invest in the murky investment space of Nigeria and in the rural community of Ndiowerre, Orlu, Imo State.

Labour, FG mum after parley; NLC, TUC in joint NEC meeting

The Federal Government and Organised Labour have kept mute on the outcome of their meeting held earlier yesterday.

Though sources said the meeting was centered on the recent increases in petrol price and its socio-economic effects on Nigerian masses, and the minimum wage, among others, none of the parties was ready to divulge the outcomes of the meetings.

However, leaders of organised labour comprising Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and its Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, counterpart, are currently holding a joint National Executive Council, NEC, meeting at Labour House, Abuja.

It was reliably gathered that the meeting was to look into the fallout of the one held at the Secretary to the Government of Federation, SGF’s office, which centered primarily on the fuel price hike, minimum wage and consequential adjustment, the Compress Natural Gas, CNG, vehicles, and the fueling point, among others

It would be recalled that among governments representatives at the meeting held at the office of the SGF, were Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, NSA; Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Labour Minister; Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.

Others were Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Information Minister; Heineken Lokpobiri, Petroleum Minister, State; Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), and representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Limited.

Present at the joint Organised Labour meeting are the President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero; Deputy President, Kabiru Ado Sani; General Secretary, Comrade Emma Ugboaja; Deputy President of the TUC, Dr. Tommy Etim Okon; Secretary General, Nuhu Toro, and the President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, who is also a deputy President of NLC.

Also present are Benjamin Anthony, Vice President of NLC, and Comrade Deborah Yusuf, Deputy Women leader of NLC.

As at the time of filing this report, the meeting was ongoing.

FG plans cash transfer for 20 million poor Nigerians

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has said that the increase in Nigeria’s revenue recorded in the 2024 fiscal year is being strategically allocated to various social intervention programmes aimed at improving the living standards of citizens and addressing pressing societal needs.

The minister said the social investment programme is targeted to impact 60 per cent of the poorest, reaching 20 million persons.

He also revealed a comprehensive proposed agenda for economic reform, which aims to reduce inflation, create jobs, and stimulate growth in key sectors of the economy.

At his October 1, 2024 address, President Bola Tinubu announced that the governments revenue for the first half of 2024 (January to June) stood at over N9.1tnmore than double the N4.06tn generated in the same period in 2023.

Speaking at a panel session titled Fiscal Reforms for a More Secure Future during the 30th Nigeria Economic Summit in Abuja on Tuesday, Edun said the increased revenue is primarily being used to finance social programmes aimed at mitigating the impact of essential but challenging reforms that have affected the cost of living.

He said, In terms of revenue, the number one place to look was inwards, domestic resource mobilisation. That’s where the government started. By the first half of this year, revenue had doubled.

Aggregate government revenue was more than doubled. And that was achieved by applying technology very robustly.

We have applied technology in a way that essentially reforms the civil service. Rather than waiting for compliance from government ministries, departments and agencies and government companies, we looked at what the rules and regulations were, how much a company was allowed to spend on its revenue, and then how much of its surplus it had to provide to government.

The social investment programme is spearheaded by direct transfers to reach 60 per cent poorest in the population. And right now, 20 million households are being supported directly. And its going to rise to, well, 20 million people, four million households so far, and it will rise to 15 million households who will be paid directly by the government.

That is how President Tinubu’s government is spending the money which is being yielded from better oil production.

Edun also emphasised the governments focus on agriculture, manufacturing, oil, and housing as vital drivers of Nigeria’s economy.

We are looking to food production to help bring down inflation, he explained.

We aim to make food more available, affordable, and to reduce the cost of living for Nigerians.

140 people die, dozens injured in gasoline tanker explosion

An image of a nice fire explosion

More than 140 people, including children, were killed and dozens were injured in Nigeria after an overturned gasoline tanker truck exploded in flames while they were trying to scoop up fuel pouring from the vehicle, emergency services said yesterday.

The accident occurred at midnight in Jigawa state’s Majiya town when the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle while traveling on a highway, police spokesperson, Lawan Adam said. Residents rushed to the scene and were scooping up fuel, sparking a massive inferno, he said.

“Close to 140 people were put in a mass grave apart from people buried in other places,” Nura Abdullahi, head of the National Emergency Management Agency in the region, told The

Residents of Majiya were in mourning yesterday as they held a mass burial for the victims. Most of the bodies were unrecognizable, emergency services said.

Deadly tanker accidents are common in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, where traffic regulations are not strictly enforced in many places and there is a lack of an efficient railway system to transport cargo.

It is also common for people to salvage fuel with cups and buckets to take home after such accidents. The practice has become more common because of soaring fuel prices, which have tripled since the start of last year as the government ended costly gas subsidies.

The driver involved in the accident had traveled about 110 kilometers (68 miles) from neighbouring Kano state, police said.

The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency initially put the death toll at 105, including those who died while being treated at hospitals.

Most other victims were burned to ashes at the scene of the accident, said Dr. Haruna Mairiga, head of Jigawa emergency services.

If they knew (about the danger), they wouldn’t have gone to fetch (the fuel),” Mairiga said.

He said emergency services arrived at the scene several hours after the accident.

Resident Sani Umar said that the fire “spread so quickly that many couldn’t escape.

“People were running in all directions, screaming for help,” Umar said.

This is a heartbreaking moment for us all, said state police Commissioner Ahmadu Abdullahi.

18.3m out-of-school children in Nigeria worrisome NGO

Funmilayo Omishope, managing director, Home Street Kids initiative (HSKi), a Non-Governmental Organisation in Ilorin, Kwara State, has expressed concern about the increasing number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, describing it as worrisome.

Omishope, who quoted the United Nations of Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), of 18.3 million out-of-school statistics, called for proactive measures to arrest the situation.

She spoke at a press conference to mark the 10th anniversary of HSKi, a project initiated by her to touch the lives of street children positively.

In her presentation titled, Who will save our children, she said, When it comes to statistics in Nigeria, it used to be 10.5 million out-of-school children but UNESCO 2024 figure now quotes 18.3 million and that could be as result of Covid-19 and economic downturn because the majority of the children going to school then are now on the street begging, scavenging, stealing, and the rest.

She said: Every street child has potential; I have passion for them to be a better version and that brought about the idea of this programme. I am appealing to individuals, corporate bodies, and the government to assist the children and give them a better life.Government should do the needful because until every street child is safe, no child is safe because they are growing with our children and the more they see our children living the life they wish to live there is anger in them and when you believe society doesnt want you; you can do and undo.

I understand the government is trying its best to give free education but what about shelter and other necessities? So, the government should provide incentives for the mothers of those children. They need to empower the poor women. When a mother is been empowered, an average of five children will be off the street. So, if government can assist the women, the problems of hunger will be addressed.

I urge the government to provide incentives to less the privileged. Women should be empowered in an ideal way; if they are empowered; 50 percent of the problems would be resolved and the rates will also be reduced.

Omishope revealed that HSKi has touched the lives of 2,500 street children positively since it was established in October 2014, adding that the children are enrolled in the best private schools in Ilorin. She expressed hope to replicate the gesture in other parts of the country. We are planning to increase the number of children and expand our branches in three locations in Ilorin and as well have our branches in other states. I see a future where these children will finish primary, secondary, and will graduate from university.

I hope to empower and train others to join the initiative by assisting the needy to further reduce the rate of out-of-school children in our society.

No impeachment move against akpabio —Senate tells Nigerians, orders investigation

SENATE

The Nigerian Senate has described as fake news, reports on Social media that the National Assembly was invaded yesterday by Operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) to stop the impeachment of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other presiding officers.

The rumour fingered some aggrieved Northern Senators allegedly dissatisfied with President, Bola Tinubu, as masterminds of the plan to remove Akpabio from office.

Decrying the fake news, Akpabio, who presided over yesterdays plenary session of the Red Chamber urged Nigerians to ignore the rumour, which he said is aimed to drive traffic on social media.

He said, It has just been brought to my attention by one of us that there is fake news trending on social media that the DSS has surrounded the national assembly with the possible impeachment of principal officers. There is no limit to social media. We are here sitting down and doing our work very peacefully oblivious of the mischief that is going on behind us.

This is what we pass through daily. Its either they use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to inject something to turn it around to drive traffic. I understand that they are being paid by YouTube.

But I hope the public is aware that this is fake news and that the chamber is very stable and the issue of impeachment does not come in.

Meanwhile, the Senate President has directed an immediate investigation into the rumour. He referred the matter to the Senate Committee on Special Duties chaired by Shehu Kaka, to report back its findings within 24 hours.

Sen. Kaka, investigate and report back to us as soon as practicable, he directed.

PDP crisis: Governors explore possible soft landing for Damagum

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), are currently seeking a soft landing for the embattled National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum, as it was learnt.

This followed a truce they brokered between feuding members of the National Working Committee, (NWC), on Tuesday.

A high-ranking member of the Party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, who spoke on the issue, on condition of anonymity; for fear of retribution, said, Our governors are working seriously behind the scenes.

After securing a ceasefire among feuding NWC members, they are now focused on ensuring our NEC meeting holds.

As things stand, the NEC meeting earlier scheduled for October 24th, may not hold, to allow time to calm frayed nerves.

Like the Chairman of the PDP-GF, Bala Mohammed, said consultations are ongoing.

The Governors have reached out to all parties in the leadership tussle to cease fire and end the media war.

They are also exploring how best to Damagum a soft landing for him to step down and revert to his original position as Deputy National Chairman (North).

We, by this, I mean major party stakeholders are also looking at the possibility of having a committed party man from the North Central to step in and stabilize our party before the next elective convention.

However, subtle campaigns among possible contenders for the job have begun.

Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam, and a Benue State-born businessman, Conrad Utaan, have been holding meetings to market themselves to stakeholders.

Utaan, who hails from the same Senatorial District as former National Chairman, Dr Iyiorchia Ayu, said in an interview that at this point in the life of the PDP, the party requires youthful energy and new thinking to break free from failures of the past.

Meanwhile, a former PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, who was aligned to the Yayari Mohammed-led NWC during the dispute said the group aligns itself with the decision of the party governors.

He said, As party men, our governors as leaders have spoken, there is nothing more to add.

Soldiers kill bandits attempting to pick up N1.5 million ransom in Kaduna

Troops of the Nigerian military have successfully killed two bandits as they attempted to collect ransom in Mai-Iddo village, located in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The criminals were making attempts to collect N1.5 million in exchange for four hostages, who were abducted the previous week when they met their Waterloo. The victims included three women and a child.

Reports indicated that the military worked in coordination with local vigilantes and a family member of the victims, setting a trap for the bandits.

The arrangements had been concluded with the troops with the man who will be taking the ransom to them and a vigilante. On getting to the particular location, the troops took cover.

As two of the bandits came out to pick the ransom, the troops opened fire at them and killed the two of them instantly, a community leader told Daily Trust.

The operation led to the safe rescue of the four captives, who have since been reunited with their families.

EFCC denies arresting radio presenter on live programme in Enugu

EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied arresting a presenter, while on air, or disrupting lawful activities at Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu on Monday.

Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesman, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to Oyewale, contrary to the claim of the radio station, the operatives of the anti-graft agency did not tamper with the equipment of the radio station.

He said that the operatives of the commission comprising four officers had on Monday went to Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu to invite one Favour Ekoh, host of Prime Time, a programme running at the station.

Ekoh is being investigated by the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the EFCC in an alleged N700 million Ponzi scheme fraud involving 50 victims.

According to the victims, he allegedly lured them into investing in a scheme Life Trading in a company, Leverage Index Limited.

They were offered returns on investment of 10 per cent of their capitals after a period of time.

They alleged that after investing their money into the company located at No. 1, Colliery Street, Okpara Avenue, Enugu, the company closed its office with no return on investment or principal returned to them.

Ekoh remained the only link the victims could hold, he said.

He said that operatives of the commission, who approached the radio station, holding a warrant of arrest for Ekoh, identified themselves.

He said that instead of allowing them to carry out their assignment, they were held hostage by the station.

Faced with such hostility, they called for a rescue team, which eventually arrested the Station Manager, Mr Bamikole Owoyomi, Ekoh and the two security guards that locked them within the premises of the station.

Ekoh was neither arrested while on air nor any disruption of the lawful activities of the Radio Station took place.

No equipment of the station was tampered with and she and others have since been released after being allowed to make statements at the EFCC Office in Enugu, he said.

According to him, the EFCC holds the media in high esteem as the fourth estate of the realm.

They are critical stakeholder in the fight against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.

Varsity workers threaten to resume strike over withheld salaries

ASUU

The members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Other Associated Institutions have threatened to resume their suspended strike over four withheld salaries by the Federal Government.

The General Secretary of NASU, Prince Peters Adeyemi, gave this hint on the sidelines of the ongoing National Executive Council meeting of the union in Abuja.

Although he declined to give the exact date of the strikes commencement, it is expected that the NEC members will take the decision during their meeting.

According to Adeyemi, members patience has been exhausted, and he declared, We are going to resume the suspended strike.

When speaking with journalists at the NEC meeting venue about the two months salaries that President Bola Tinubu directed to be paid out of the four months withheld salaries, the General Secretary said, What is new is that the Presidents directive has been disobeyed. We used to know that the presidents words can be equated to a command. So, when the President said to do this, his aides quickly dealt with it. But in this case, it seems as if the Minister of Finance has his priorities beyond what he ought to have done.

Adeyemi added, The money has not been paid. Now it is obvious that we are going to resume our suspended strike. We have given the government enough notice. Very recently, we had to prevail on our members to say, look, we think we are making headway, if we start a strike now, it may not be good. But everything that we have done shows clearly that the Finance Ministry and the Minister are unwilling to pay the two months that they said Mr President approved.

Our patience is already exhausted. We are going to resume the suspended strike. I know that when certain elements in a government treat the directive of the president with levity, it could mean that they are exploiting their closeness to the president, and the president will have to readjust.

There is no reason for not paying this money. I think this is a big disrespect for the president and an attempt to provoke an industrial upheaval in an atmosphere that is cool and calm. It works against the presidents resolve to say I dont want strikes in the universities. And everything is being done by this government, at least the Minister, to prevent strikes. The Ministry of Education has done its part, the president has done his part, the Finance Minister is the one sitting on our money.

Tinubu had in October 2023 directed that NASU and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities members be paid two out of the four months withheld salaries by the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022, following a prolonged strike over unresolved disputes.

Reps seek reversal of price of PMS says government should take steps to stabilise prices

house of reps

The House of Representatives yesterday, October 16, asked the federal government to immediately order a reversal of the recent increase in the price of petrol which it said has increased the hardship being faced by Nigerians.

The House also asked the government to take immediate steps to stabilise petrol and cooking gas prices through targeted interventions such as temporary price relief measures, tax reductions, or subsidies on LPG for low-income households.

Adopting a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by 101 members, the House asked the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Ministry of Petroleum Resources and other relevant agencies to expedite the repair/maintenance of domestic refineries and increase local refining capacity as a stop-gap measure to reduce the dependence on imported refined petroleum products.

It also asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to implement monetary policies that will mitigate the adverse effects of fuel price hikes on inflation, particularly about essential goods and services.

They also want the federal government to explore alternative energy sources and diversify the country’s energy mix to reduce reliance on petrol and gas, promoting renewable energy solutions that are more sustainable and affordable in the long term.

In addition, it said State Governments to adopt policies that alleviate the financial burden on their citizens, such as waiving taxes or levies on transportation and goods affected by high fuel costs;

Moving the motion on behalf of other members, Deputy Minority Leader, Aliyu Sani Madaki (NNPP, Kano) said Nigeria, as an oil-producing nation, has historically relied on petroleum products and cooking gas (LPG) as essential sources of energy for both domestic and industrial purposes.

He expressed concern that in recent months, the prices of petrol and cooking gas have skyrocketed and continue to so do, creating an unsustainable financial burden on ordinary Nigerians and exacerbating the cost of living.

Madaki said the removal of fuel subsidies, coupled with global oil price volatility and the depreciation of the Naira, has contributed significantly to the rising cost of petrol at the pump and cooking gas for households.

He said the escalating fuel and gas prices are impacting the cost of transportation, food, essential goods and healthcare, further increasing inflation and pushing many families into deeper financial hardship.

He expressed concern that businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), are struggling to manage their operational costs due to increased fuel prices, threatening economic stability and job security.

He said the Federal Government has previously announced plans to repair domestic refineries and boost local refining capacity to address some of these issues but has yet to deliver significant results in this regard.

According to him, the rising cost of petrol and cooking gas poses a significant threat to the livelihood of millions of Nigerians and unchecked inflationary pressure caused by the increased prices can lead to social unrest, increased poverty rates, and negative long-term economic effects.

He said that unless urgent and pragmatic steps are taken to control the rising cost of petrol and cooking gas, the Nation will go into economic crisis leading to negative outcomes like increased crime rate and mortality rate.

In his contribution to the debate, Minority Whip of the House, Ali Isa (PDP, Gombe) said the constant increase in prices of petrol has led to the escalation of prices of food, transportation, and health care services, thereby having a negative impact on the Nigerian people.

He argued that in accordance with the provision of section 14(2b) of the constitution, the primary purpose of government is to ensure the welfare and security of the people, saying, Our responsibility is to ensure the welfare of our people.

“The people are suffering because of the increase in fuel price and the government should allow the people to breathe and should please not remove the cylinder giving Nigerians little oxygen.

“The government should listen to the cry of the people and take steps to review any policy that will affect Nigerians negatively. Those who sign this motion are of the view that their people and by extension, the Nigerian people are suffering”.

Also contributing, Yusuf Adamu Gagdi argued that the motion was apt and speaks to the current challenges that Nigerians were passing through, saying, We speak to draw the attention of the government to do things that will improve the welfare of Nigerians.

He stated that members were not against any move to better the lives of Nigerians, adding that the Petroleum Industry Act which deregulated the oil sector was a creation of the National Assembly.

He said however that what should be of utmost concern should be how to adjust the speed limit of the deregulation to avoid adverse effects on the Nigerian people.

Also, George Ibezimakor said the increase in the price of petrol has made nonsense of the recently announced national minimum wage of N70,000 given the sharp increase in prices of goods and services.

“Our people cannot transport their farm produce to the market and because of that, there is an increase in prices of food we must pressure the government. We also need to review our OPEC policy. We don’t have to be in OPEC because that is the only way we can address this issue.

In his intervention, the Minority Le/ader and one of the sponsors of the motion, Kingsley Chinda (PDP) said every responsible and responsive office holder must listen to the people they serve.

He said: Law is made for man and not man for the law. When a law is passed, you also look at the intention of the law. The PIA provides for deregulation. What is the intention of the law? Is that what Nigerians going through right now? The answer is no.

“We yearn for deregulation, but his do we implement it so that it does not affect the people negatively? We must consider Nigerians in the process of implementation of such laws.
