National grid collapse, sign of leadership failure Peter Obi to Nigerian Govt

Power grid

The 2023 Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, yesterday said the national power grid collapse is a shame and an indication of leadership failure in Nigeria.

Obi, who called for the reform of Nigeria’s power sector, said the latest collapse has exposed the fragility of the country’s electricity infrastructure.

In a post on X, the former presidential candidate said the latest power grid collapse is emblematic of a leadership and government that had failed to prioritize the welfare and economic well-being of the people.

Obi said: For the umpteenth time, the national grid has collapsed, plunging a huge part of the nation into darkness and exposing the fragility of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

“This recurring disaster is a national shame and a glaring testament to the failure of leadership and policy implementation at the highest levels.

“How long must Nigerians endure a system that fails to provide one of the critical necessities for a productive society?

“We all know the immense importance of power supply to the transformation of our economy. Its support to SMEs, which are the engine of job creation and a major contributor to our GDP, is immeasurable.

“Today, we are the fourth largest economy in Africa, having fallen from the number one position due to leadership failure over the years, including the persistent power crisis, which is critical when compared to smaller economies.

“South Africa, which is now the largest economy in Africa with a GDP of about $400 billion and 30% of our population, generates and distributes over 40,000 megawatts of electricity.

“Secondly, Egypt, the second largest economy with a GDP of about $350 billion and half of our population, generates and distributes over 40,000 megawatts.

“Algeria, the third largest economy, with about 300B GDP and 20% of our population, generates and distributes over 50,000 megawatts of electricity.

“Nigeria, with less GDP but with more population than the 3 countries combined, generates and distributes less than 10,000 megawatts, and even that is riddled with frequent collapses and crises of failure.

“This disparity in power generation is a reflection of the deep-rooted governance deficit that continue to hold back our growth and potential.

“It is time for urgent, comprehensive reform. Nigerians deserve a government that prioritizes measurable indices of development”

Uzodimma names Ughalaa Special Adviser on Public Orientation

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has approved the appointment of foremost journalist, Collins Chibueze Ughalaa, as his Special Adviser on Public Orientation.

His appointment takes immediate effect.

During Governor Uzodimma’s first tenure, Ughalaa also functioned in the capacity of a Special Adviser on Public Communication.

While congratulating Ughalaa on his appointment, Governor Uzodimma expects him to bring his experience in the media sector to bear on his new duty post, and in sync with the administration’s 3-R mantra of reconstruction, rehabilitation and recovery.

FG plans 25% income tax on wealthy Nigerians

Taiwo Oyedele, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms said that the federal government has proposed that personal income for rich people will increase to 25 percent from 2025.

Oyedele disclosed this in its remarks at the 30th Nigeria Economic Summit.

According to him, the new tax policy contained in the Economic Stabilization Bill currently at the National Assembly will see wealthy Nigerians earning above N1.5 million pay more taxes in the coming months.

Citing a survey by NEGS, he said only 17 percent of Nigerians and 30 percent of businesses pay taxes because of lack trust in the Nigerian government.

He stressed that the country is working to close its about 70-75 percent tax gap to double its revenue by four times.

“The rich people earning N1.5 million above will see their personal income tax rise by up to 25 percent.

“Only 17 percent of Nigerians pay taxes, as well as 30 percent of businesses and one of the reasons is because they dont trust the government.

“Therefore, what we want to do is to have a National portal just like South Africa where tax payment is seamless and transparent because our current tax gap is about 70-75 percent but if we correct that and everyone pays, our revenues will be 4 times.

“Another issue is policy gaps where we grant unnecessary waivers to some people who dont even deserve it. But the main issue remains compliance issue”, he said.

It would be recalled that in the first week of October 2024, Oyedele announced that the Deduction of Tax at Source (Withholding) Regulations, 2024, has been published in the official gazette.

Earlier in September this year, the Federal Executive Council approved the Economic Stabilisation Bills as proposed by Oyedeles committee, aimed at 15 tax, fiscal, and establishment laws in Nigeria.

Peacemaker separating fight punched to death

A man who tried to make peace has been punched to death while trying to separate a fight in Adamawa State. The peacemaker, Markus Dali, had stepped between Barka Yama and Alex Tari who were exchanging fisticuffs, seeking to make them stop the fight, only to become the victim as Barka Yarma allegedly gave him the blow that proved fatal. The three are of Sina Kwande community in the Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The Adamawa State Police Command, after arresting the 32-year-old Barka, arraigned him before the Chief Magistrate Court I sitting in Yola, on the charge of culpable homicide.

Arraigning the defendant, the prosecuting police officer, ASP Francis Audu, explained that while Barka Yama and Alex Tari were fighting on the 30th August, 2024, Markus Dali decided to intervene but the defendant gave him a blow, after which he fell down and became unconscious.

He was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor after he was rushed to the hospital, the police prosecutor said.

After the defendant pleaded guilty, the prosecutor urged the court to remand him in a correctional centre to enable the prosecution transmit the case diary to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Muhammed Njidda, granted the application and ordered that the defendant be remanded.

Soludo signs Anambra LG law, says absolute autonomy recipe for chaos

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has described absolute autonomy for local government areas in Nigeria as an impossibility, insisting that it will be a recipe for chaos.

Soludo made the assertion while signing the Local Government Administration Law in Awka.

According to him, the attendant challenges before the issue of local government autonomy are such that would certainly deepen the fate of the system and spell doom for the expected beneficiaries of the process.

Soludo said, “This is where Section 7 of the Constitution comes handy, and the Anambra State House of Assembly has risen to the occasion. Happily, the Supreme Court did not nullify Section 7 of the Constitution”.

“The new laws by Anambra House of Assembly are therefore consequential to give operational life to the Supreme Court judgment and not to undermine it.

“If the State House of Assembly abdicates this constitutional duty, the Local Government will then have no law on the use and management of its finance which the Constitution has given the State House of Assembly the mandate to legislate on. Indeed, in many states the House of Assemblies retain the power to suspend or remove chairpersons of local governments.

“By the way, isn’t the legislative authority exercised by the State Assemblies under Section 7 of the Constitution similar to the powers granted by the Constitution to the National Assembly over the Federal Capital Territory and its Area Councils?

“Governors are often accused of seeking to control LG funds with insinuations that LG funds are mismanaged. Of course, in a society where public office is seen as dinning table and public trust is low, people judge others by their own standards: by what they would do if they were in the position. I often ask: control for what?

“While I cannot hold brief for every governor, I know that most states are struggling to ensure a solvent local government system. I wish I can be spared the headache, if not for the predictable collateral damage to the system if we abdicate from structured oversight and collective accountability.

“Without active collaboration and coordination between state and local governments, many LGs will end up in a huge financial mess, requiring bailouts by state governments or will FGN directly intervene in every case of insolvency among the 774 LGs?

“The challenge ahead can be daunting given the quantum rise in wage bills because of the new minimum wage, as well as consequential rise in future pension/gratuity payments”.

The governor highlighted some of his achievements in the local government sector since he became governor of Anambra State.

“We inherited a local government system with four-year arrears (2018-2022) of gratuity to retired primary school teachers and other staff of local government.

“We have restructured their finances back to sustainability. Everyone who retired from the local government and State civil service since my tenure is paid gratuity/pension, and we are on course to clear the outstanding arrears soon.

“Three years arrears on counterpart funding for Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has been cleared, resulting in billions of Naira recently invested in our primary schools.

“Some 326 primary health centres are being constructed or modernized in all the 326 wards in the state as well as employing hundreds of medical personnel to man the primary health centres.

“Most of the local government secretariats have been remodelled and equipped, and the LG system is once again alive. This is not to mention that 3,615 out of the 8,115 new teachers recruited under my administration are for primary schools and they are being paid”, the Governor added.

Stakeholders applaud Prof. Iwu over 15th edition of herbal festival …Urge Nigerians to tap from multi billion dollars industry

By Jude Onyenedogha…

Stakeholders in the medical, agricultural economic sectors have lauded Prof Maurice Iwu for sustaining the annual herbal festival, Christened HerbFest.

The stakeholders barred their hearts in separate interviews with newsmen, during the 15th edition of the HerbFest, under the auspices of Bioresources Development and Conservation Programme (BDCP), at the Foret Event Centre, Owerri, Imo State recently.

Imo State Commissioner for Primary Health, Social Services and Health Insurance, Dr. Prosper Ohayagha made it clear that everything done in medicine field have their root from herbs, saying that the herbal festival has been of great help for medical practice, even

as stakeholders were strategizing to make Imo State the center of herbal cultivation and medicine practice.

The Health Commissioner encouraged Imo people to go into herbal cultivation, which he said will help to increase the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), as according to him; China, India, Egypt and many other countries are making a lot of money from herbal medicine.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Cosmas Maduba stressed the need to encourage farmers to commercialize the cultivation of medicinal plants and crops which serve as medicine, food and raw materials for industries.

He made it clear that Nigeria has a comparative advantage in herbal cultivation, being that it belongs to the tropical part of the world, with sufficient sunlight that encourages growth of plants and crops, calling on; Policy makers, entrepreneurs, tertiary institutions, organizations, to come onboard, unbundle the potentials in the sector and take full advantage of it.

The Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, Imo State, Dr Echeta Uzodimma also corroborated the assertion that every medicine emanated from herbs, saying the only difference was that the white man was able to extract the active ingredient in herbs and was able to scientifically trace it to the point of action.

Dr. Uzodimma said the herbs could be used as medicine, as well as food. He added that another important fact in herbal medicine practice in Nigeria, is for the practitioners to know their limit.

The Vice Chancellor, Claretian University of Nigeria, Nekede, Imo State and former Rector, Imo State Polytechnic, Umuagwo, Rev. Fr. Wence Madu said the HerbFest will have positive impact in the people and economy of Imo State, as it will help them to cultivate new habit by no longer taking herbs and leaves for granted.

He described Bio Resource as an innovative idea which calls attention to the herbs and leaves with nutritional and medicinal values and will be able to safeguard the health of the people.

A prominent traditional ruler in Imo State and the traditional ruler of Isiama Autonomous Community, Isiala Mbano LGA, Eze (Dr) Oliver Ohanwe regretted that Nigerians are poor in the midst of riches, in the sense that God endowed the country with all the raw materials needed to produce whatever they need, in commercial quantities and export, but they have failed to harness them.

“We have a policy that has never really worked. Nigerians, not only the Doctors and pharmacists, but everybody, should pick interest in harnessing the herbs and leaves within our environment, to solve our medical and nutritional needs”.

Court orders VeryDarkMan to delete defamatory video made against Femi Falana

A high court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, yesterday ordered social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse AKA VeryDarkMan to delete defamatory videos on human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN.

The court also ordered the critic to desist from making any comment about the Falanas again.

This came after Falana revealed he is resisting the temptation to file a criminal complaint against VeryDarkMan, for accusing him of allegedly facilitating pardon for cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky.

It would be recalled that VeryDarkMan, on September 24 2024, leaked a voice call recording of Bobrisky narrating how singer Falz contacted him during his six months jail term.

Responding to the allegations, the Falanas had filed a letter demanding a retraction of the statements and an apology from VeryDarkMan within 24 hours.

Plateau LG poll: Two Igbo youths, other councillors-elect get Certificate of return

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission has presented certificates of return to 304 councillors-elect across the state, including two Igbo youths, Austin Wachuku and Okoro Uzoma.

Wachuku, from Abia State, was elected councillor for Vanderpuye Ward in Jos North Local Government Area while Uzoma, an indigene of Imo State, was elected to represent Tafawa Bela Ward, also in Jos North. Both secured their positions on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Presenting the certificates at the PLASIEC headquarters in Jos, the state capital, the commissions chairman, Plangji Cishak, congratulated the councillors-elect for their victory in the council polls held last Wednesday.

However, the elections in 21 wards were inconclusive, leaving the councillors from those areas without certificates of return. The PLASIEC chairman confirmed that a re-run election will be conducted in the affected wards on Saturday, October 19.

Cishak urged the newly elected councillors to serve their communities diligently, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling their campaign promises.

As PLASIEC, we have ensured that the election was free, fair, and credible. Today, it is with joy that we present you with certificates of return, allowing you to be sworn in at your various LGAs, he said.

They called on their opponents to join hands with them in working towards the development of Plateau State.

ECOWAS Court gets new leadership

The ECOWAS Court of Justice (CCJ) has elected Cape Verdes Ricardo Gonçalves as its new President. It also elected Sierra Leones Sengu Koroma as the new Vice President, both for non-renewable four-year tenure.

They were elected by the courts college of five judges and subsequently inaugurated by Guinea-Bissaus President Umaro Embalo.

Mr Embalo is the former chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

Mr Gonçalves succeeds Edward Asante, who had presided as the courts president for six years, while Mr Koroma succeeds Ivory Coasts Gberi-bè Ouattara as vice president.

Meanwhile, Mr Asante has been recommended for Ghanas Supreme Court, although he still remains a judge of the CCJ until the end of his extended tenure in 2026.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that under Mr Asante, the CCJ witnessed remarkable growth and transformation in its jurisprudence, case management system and physical infrastructure.

Mr Asante made possible the relocation of the court from its former overcrowded location to its new complex at Gudu District, Abuja in 2023.

The legal luminary also brought innovations in the CCJs processes through the introduction of the electronic case management system and the consequential amendment of the courts practice direction.

The innovations have enabled seamless virtual and physical court sessions, as well as easing access to applicants from ECOWAS member states.

This has reduced the financial burden on applicants because applications can now be filed, cases heard and judgments delivered virtually.

He also filled most of the vacancies in the courts organogram with the recruitment of experienced lawyers into the Registry and Research Departments.

Mr Asante described his tenure as a worthwhile experience and a privilege to serve the community, which enabled him to gain valuable insights into the ECOWAS integration process.

The eminent jurist added that his six-year tenure enabled him to understand the value of the respect for extant instruments of the community, including its commitment to respect for human rights, accountability and transparency.

Speaking, Mr Gonçalves said his vision for the court was focused on two fundamental pillars of responsibility and dialogue.

He stressed the need to uphold the institutions mission as an independent, reliable, efficient, and accessible court.

Mr Gonçalves expressed his commitment to foster continuous dialogue with other ECOWAS institutions, agencies, member states, and civil societies and ensure prudent management of ECOWAS funds.

Abia disburses interest-free loans to youth farmers

Gov Otti

The Abia State Government said it has commenced the disbursement of interest-free loans to 302 youths trained on agricultural ventures in the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mr Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Umuahia.

The reports stated that the government in February, sponsored 302 youths to receive training in various agricultural ventures at a Nassarawa-based farm, CSS Global Integrated Farms.

The commissioner said that the beneficiaries of the loans were sponsored for the training programme as part of the governments measures to boost food production in the state.

He said: The process for the disbursement of interest-free loans in 302 CSS farms trained youth farmers has commenced.

“This follows the flag off and approval of the disbursement of interest-free loans by His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti sometime in September.

He said that the state Ministry of Agriculture would ensure that the disbursement of the loans followed due process to ensure that the purpose for disbursing the funds would be realised.

“Beneficiaries will not be given one balloon payment rather the disbursement will be in tranches on milestones that will be tied to the level of extent of work done by the beneficiaries.

“All these are to ensure that the loans are adequately utilised”, Kanu said.

NNPC sells PMS to IPMAN at N995/litre

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has agreed to sell Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) to members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria at N995 per litre.

This followed the intervention of the Department of State Services in the controversy between the two parties.

The National Vice President of IPMAN, Hammed Fashola, told our correspondent that the intervention of the DSS solved a lot of problems facing marketers.

Fashola also confirmed that through their intervention, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority agreed to pay the associations outstanding N10bn while resolving issues about the direct purchase of petrol from the Dangote refinery.

“We really appreciate their intervention. They are doing their job. Anywhere they have seen that there may be a crisis, it is their duty to intervene. And their intervention brokered peace and understanding between the parties, and everybody agreed to work together,” Fashola stated.

Asked to disclose how much the NNPC will sell PMS to IPMAN, he replied, “For now, tentatively, I think they are offering us N995 per litre.

“With the N995 ex-depot price, Fashola assured that IPMAN members would no longer sell at prices much higher than that of major marketers, saying, however, that distance is another factor for pricey PMS.

“Our members sell at N1,200 or so and this depends on the location. I think with the N995, there will be a little reduction. Don’t forget that if you transport a product from Lagos to a far distance, you will pay for transportation and other charges.

“We want to work on that because we want to have a common ground. When we sit down and look at the price analysis offered to us, and factor in all our expenses, we want to have a uniform price as much as possible.

“So, I will not be able to tell you the exact price now, but we are working on it, especially in the Lagos axis and other zones. We will look at the transportation cost and all that. At the end of the day, we will fix the price for ourselves”, he stated.

The IPMAN leader emphasised that IPMAN is interested in prices that would be competitive, saying the price disparity has been a disadvantage to independent marketers.

“The price disparity has been a disadvantage between us and the NNPC Retail and major marketers. So, we are trying to look at how to close that gap so that we come back fully into the business. The lack of direct supply has been our problem, and now that we are solving that problem, I don’t think that disparity will be there again”, he stressed.

Fashola explained that the price differential is the reason for the queues in some filling stations in the cities.

“The queues you see are because of that difference in prices, that’s why people are saying there are queues. There are no queues; it is the price disparity that is causing the queues. So, if there is not much difference, we have filling stations everywhere; just drive in, buy fuel, and go. But that so much difference in the price is creating that scenario of queues”, he narrated.

Reacting to the directive that marketers can now buy petrol directly from local refineries, Fashola said the association would meet with Dangote this week.

“For now, we intend to meet with Dangote this week to see how we work out the modalities and all that. The Federal Government has given a directive and we want to take full advantage of that”, he posited.

The IPMAN vice president stressed that the association is not ignoring the NNPC either as it would patronise the best price.

“At the same time too, we are not ignoring NNPC. So, whichever way, we are ready to do business with NNPC. It depends on the price, we go for the best”.

IPMAN had revealed on Thursday that the cost of petrol from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery to NNPC was about N898/litre, but noted that NNPC was selling the same product to independent marketers at N1,010/litre in Lagos.

The association, which controls over 70 per cent of filling stations nationwide, kicked against this and threatened to down tools, as it also demanded a refund from NNPC for earlier petrol supply payments made by its members.

The IPMAN national president, Abubakar Maigandi, who spoke during a live television interview on Thursday, argued that the price was higher than what NNPC paid for the product from the Dangote refinery.

He also noted that independent marketers funds had been held by the national oil company for about three months.

According to him, NNPC purchased the product from the refinery at N898/litre but is asking marketers to buy it at N1,010/litre in Lagos; N1,045 in Calabar; N1,050 in Port Harcourt; and N1,040 in Warri.

“Our major challenge now is that independent marketers have an outstanding debt from the NNPC and the company collected products through Dangote at a lower rate, which is not up to N900, but they are telling us now to buy this product from them at the price of N1,010/litre in Lagos; N1,045 in Calabar; N1,050 in Port-Harcourt; and N1,040 in Warri”, Maigandi stated.

The Police command in Kwara State has dismissed three of its officers over their alleged involvements in the death of a student at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola.

It would be recalled that the incident, which occurred on September 4, 2024, generated widespread condemnation which led to the transfer of the case to the police headquarters in Abuja.

The indicted officers are Inspector Abiodun Kayode, Inspector James Samuel and Sergeant Oni Philip.

The command, while giving updates on the incident in a statement by its spokesperson, DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the indicted officers were found guilty of leaving their beat, corrupt practices and unlawful or unnecessary exercise of authority in the matter.

The deceased, a 21-year-old ND2 student of Electrical/Electronic was allegedly killed during a fuel hike protest by the students in Ilorin.

The fund will be utilised through the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) programme.

The reports indicated that the programme was launched in 2021 to aid poor and vulnerable households and micro-small enterprises affected by the pandemic.

Dr Lire Ersado, the World Bank Task Team Leader for NG-CARES, revealed these at the end of a two-day Peer Learning and Experience Sharing meeting in Port Harcourt yesterday.

The meeting was organised by the Federal Cares Support Unit, under the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

Ersado, represented by Prof. Foluso Okumadewa, an official with NG-CARES, said that the grant would also assist Nigerias broader economic recovery initiatives.

He added that the World Bank will continue to support NG-CARES for the next three years, and this support may extend further with backing from the government.

He reiterated the banks commitment toward institutionalising the programme to ensure its sustainability beyond external funding.

He said the NG-CARES programme aims to promote economic resilience and provide stimulus to communities impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr Abdulkareem Obaje, the National Coordinator of NG-CARES, highlighted the programmes successes in offering essential support to vulnerable populations.

He said the programme spent about 750 million dollars to aid those affected by the pandemic.

He explained that the shock response mechanism of the programme has been highly effective, with 625 million dollars already disbursed to states, representing an impressive 88 per cent.

These reimbursements for work completed by various states is a remarkable achievement, considering the programmes scope and timeline.

The national coordinator further stated that an additional 50 million dollars was expected to be disbursed before Dec. 31, with the possibility of extending the programme.

Obaje pointed out that NG-CARES has overachieved its goals by 30 per cent, with 345 million dollars reimbursed to states, resulting in 834 million dollars in verified outcomes.

The programme could reach one billion dollars by the end of the fourth Independent Verification Agent assessments, restructured to support victims of shocks in several states across the country.

Alhaji Abdulateef Shittu, the Director-General of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), emphasised the NGFs mandate to assist states in adopting best practices for developmental programmes like NG-CARES.

He highlighted the forums role in managing peer learning and experience-sharing, ensuring that all states benefit from the programme.

The forum commends the states for their active participation and collaboration in overcoming common challenges to achieve success, Shittu concluded.

PDP Crisis: Factional national chairman to assume duty, despite court order

Factional Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Yayari Mohammed, said he has assumed duty days after his appointment into the position by a section of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

Mr Mohammed disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, He said in the statement titled, Acceptance of appointment as Acting National Chairman of our party, the NWC under his leadership would be guided strictly by the constitution of the party.

He added that he would be fair to all members irrespective of their status, position or state.

The NWC under my leadership will be guided strictly by the constitution of our party and I will at all times be fair to all members irrespective of their status, position or state in the party.

Only this will guarantee and engender loyalty and commitment of our teeming members.

In this regard, my primary goal, focus and mandate in the onerous assignment is to restore the confidence of our members by immediately setting in motion the process to hold the long overdue National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of our party already scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024, he said.

Mr Mohammed also asked the PDP members in the North-central zone to urgently meet and forward their nominee for the position of substantive national chairman to his office.

In line with the provision of our party’s constitution, the Northcentral Zone which is constitutionality entitled to produce a replacement to serve out the tenure of the former National Chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, is hereby requested to urgently meet and forward its nominee to my office for necessary preparation and forwarding for consideration and approval by NEC at the October 24, 2024 meeting.

Mr Mohammed, who is the national treasurer of the PDP, was appointed the acting chairman by a faction led by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Friday, after it announced the suspension of Umar Damagun, who has been acting in that position since 2023, and the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.

The other faction led by Mr Damagun had on Thursday suspended Mr Ologunagba and the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade.

Mr Mohammed assumed duty despite the order of a Federal High Court barring the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT) from removing Mr Damagun from office.

He also defied plans by some of the party’s organs, including the Board of Trustees (BoT) and the PDP Governors Forum, to wade into the crisis. The governors are reportedly meeting today.

Acceptance of appointment as Acting National Chairman of our party

The domestic events within our party in the last few days call for deep reflection about the management of the PDP, especially at this crucial time in our nation, particularly as it relates to our role as an opposition party and general management as a constitution compliant party in the true spirit of the mission and vision of the founding fathers which are equity, fairness and justice.

I am humbled and grateful for the numerous messages of solidarity, support and best wishes received from members of our party across the country.

The enthusiasm and relief expressed revealed the desire and determination of our members to see a PDP that is strong, democratic and based on strict adherence to its Constitution.

Regrettably, we must admit that we have not satisfactorily carried out the critical role expected of a virile opposition in a democracy.

This, it has been observed, is a result of the conflict of interests personal or political elevated above party interest, which continues to have a debilitating effect on the ability of our party to perform effectively at various levels, particularly at the national level.

This state of affairs continues to affect the performance and viability of our party to perform its role as expected as a platform which Nigerians have come to admire and look up to given the robust Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017) and the monumental achievements of the party in the 16 years in government, which period is referred to with nostalgia as the golden years of governance in Nigeria.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP, desirous of revamping the party in line with the vision of its founding fathers, on Thursday, October 10, 2024, appointed me as the Acting National Chairman to lead the charge to rekindle the hope and aspiration of our teeming members especially the youths, critical stakeholders and generality of Nigerians who wish to see a political party that is ready and willing to play the role of effective opposition in the quest to develop our democracy and seek for responsible and responsive government in our country.

The NWC under my leadership will be guided strictly by the constitution of our party and I will at all times be fair to all members irrespective of their status, position or state in the party.

Only this will guarantee and engender loyalty and commitment of our teeming members.

In this regard, my primary goal, focus and mandate in the onerous assignment is to restore the confidence of our members by immediately setting in motion the process to hold the long overdue National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of our party already scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024.

IPC demands investigation into EFCC raid on Enugu radio station

The International Press Centre, IPC, has called for the immediate investigation and prosecution of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, officials who stormed Urban Radio Station (94.5FM) in Enugu on the evening of Monday, October 14, 2024.

The demand which came on Tuesday via a statement, was made through its Safety and Protection of Journalists, SPJ, hub.

Signed by the IPC Executive Director, the group described the incident as a despicable assault on the media and a blatant abuse of power.

The recent spate of attacks on journalists suggests that the EFCC and other security agencies have resorted to extra-judicial, jungle tactics to address whatever grievances they may have. Said the statement.

He said, the officials overpowered the staff of the station who they alleged intimidated with arms, forced them to sit on the bare floor, took their phones, and went straight into the live studio of the station and whisked away the anchor of the interactive programme, PRIME TIME, that was going on live at the time of the invasion.

They called on the EFCC Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoye, to launch a thorough investigation into the invasion and to ensure that the officers involved are prosecuted and held accountable for their unprofessional conduct.

The group who stressed that the incident should serve as a warning to other officers, urged the EFCC to provide additional training for its personnel on the constitutional boundaries of their authority.

They also condemned a recent attack on journalists in Bayelsa State, which according to them, occurred during a press briefing organized by the Sagbama Local Government Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Yenagoa.

In the attack, thugs were reported to have attacked the venue, leaving several journalists injured.

IPC reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the protection of journalists and holding those responsible for attacks on the press accountable.

Imo govt debunks circulating video linking Uzodimma to gas pipeline to US, Europe

Imo State Government has described as infantile hallucination a trending video linking Gov Hope Uzodimma, to an alleged pipeline being built in the state to connect gas direct to the United States of America and parts of Europe.

It said the amateur video, purported to be issued by a pro Biafran organisation was intended to smear the image of the governor and incite Ndigbo against the rest of Nigerians.

The Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba dismissed the video as a “satanic attempt to incite another round of violence in the state after the recent burning of the National Open University of Nigeria Centre at Ehime Mbano which was also fuelled by unfounded rumours and incitement by debased and deranged elements

“They have started again. After the arson at Mbano, they have started weaving another Web of lies and propaganda, as a prelude to unleash violence in the state. The security agencies should be aware of this satanic move”, Emelumba submitted.

He raised the alarm that the senseless, childish and illogical contents of the video might be believed by gullible people with mob mentality to cause violence

He explained that neither the Federal Government, nor the state is aware of any plans to construct pipeline from Imo State to, either Europe or the US.

According to him, ” in their ignorance and haste to characterize Uzodimma as a villain, the purveyors of the hate speeches did not even consider the fact that such a project is practically impossible ”

” But the tragedy of what is happening is that the real enemies of Ndigbo are pushing a narrative of stereotyping of other Nigerians, forgetting that igbo’s are found in all parts

of the country and stand the risk of being harmed because of the rhetorics of a few misguided elements among us”, he noted.

Emelumba challenged those circulating the seditious video to provide any iota of evidence that such a pipeline project is even in the offing.

He said rather what the state government is doing is to leverage on the free trade zone granted the state to encourage investors to utilise the abundant gas deposits for setting up of industries for the employment of Imo people.

He dismissed the report of Uzodimma arranging for a hide out after his tenure, describing the proposition as ridiculous.

” After his tenure, His Excellency will still be in Nigeria. He has not committed any crime to warrant him going on exile. I only pray that those peddling this libelous falsehood against him will still be alive to witness everything “, he declared

Japa: Nurses shouldn’t be stopped from seeking greener pastures abroad –Peter Obi

Former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi has said nurses and other professionals travelling overseas for greener pastures should not be stopped.

Obi stated this at St Charles Borromeo College of Nursing and Midwifery in Onitsha yesterday.

Obi, who donated money to the institution, noted that education and health are the currencies with which people will transact in the future.

The former Anambra governor, who said Nigeria has over 200 million people, noted that there is no need to restrict people from travelling out of the country for greener pastures.

Rather, he said Nigeria’s leaders should concentrate on training more people as foreign remittances can be a form of revenue for the country

“What we are doing is not charity, we are rather investing in you. We need to invest in knowledge and health because it is the future.

“Investing in you will ensure your greatness. Your profession is lucrative, you are being looked for all over the world.

“I told Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria that they should stop denying anybody from leaving Nigeria for greener pastures.

“We have 200 million people, let us educate them. Let those who want go out to go and let those who want to stay should stay. Diaspora remittance is also a form of revenue generation.

“If you see me going round trying to donate, it is not anything but because we want to make life better for you all. I came here so I can donate to you. My children will not attend that university, and I can sit down and use the money to add more chieftaincy to my name, but that is not be how to develop the future.

“I will be in college of nursing Anyingba tomorrow, they need my assistance to get accreditation and I will be there to support them, so that they can get it”, Obi said.

Patience Jonathan advises female students against prostitution

Mrs Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, has advised schoolgirls against prostitution and drug abuse.

Jonathan advised in Abuja yesterday, at the National Female Students Conference and launching of the maiden Magazine tagged, The Face of Womens Libbers.

The event was organised by the National Association of Female Students (ANFS) as part of activities to commemorate the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child.

Represented by Mrs Safiya Ogo, Director-General, Women of Change Initiative, the former First Lady noted the involvement of young girls in all kinds of social vices.

She identified some of the ungodly activities as drug abuse, prostitution, girl child trafficking, alcoholism, cultism, cybercrimes, indecent dressing and rituals among others.

Jonathan, adopted as the Grand Matron of ANFS at the event, described the development as worrisome, adding that such absurd actions were taking a toll on young girls, particularly female undergraduate students.

These practices are undoubtedly barriers to the achievement of the goals and aspirations of these girls and women.

We also have had reports of young girls who are victims of yahoo rituals, resulting mostly from the crave for quick wealth.

This craving for quick wealth can be achieved through hard work and selflessness, while maintaining ones dignity as a woman, she said.

Jonathan, therefore, urged the female students to shun prostitution, drug abuse and all manner of vices but instead, be role models with dignity as women, wives and mothers.

She advised the ANFS to embark on a massive campaign to sensitise female students, including the males, to remain focused and law abiding for them to excel in their chosen careers.

You are not only the future mothers and wives of this country, but also future leaders, businesswomen, heads of parastatals and captains of industries.

We live in a competitive world, therefore, in preparation for your future role, you must be well equipped and excel in your various professional callings.

One way to equip our girls ahead of these positions is the girl-child education. This is because education is the key to development, she said.

Also, Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary, Women Affairs Secretariat, Federal Capital Territory Administration, stressed the need to celebrate the potential, resilience, and achievements of girls everywhere.

Benjamins-Laniyi, who was also adopted as the Matron of the association in FCT, described girls education as the cornerstone of societal progress.

According to her, education unlocks opportunities, breaks cycles of poverty, and fosters inclusive growth.

Similarly, Dr Jumai Ahmadu, founder and Executive Director, Helpline for . advised female students to continue to raise their voices for change through positive activism.

Ahmadu, however, stressed the need for the students to be serious with their academics and aspire for greatness.

Earlier, the National President of ANFS, Omoniyi Alice, said that the event was organised to discuss the future of female students across the world.

This, according to Alice, will ensure that female students are given every opportunity to succeed.

We live in a world that is rapidly changing, and it is essential that we adapt our education system to meet these changes.

As the future leaders of our society, it is crucial that our female students are given every opportunity to excel and be able to compete on a level playing field, free from discrimination or unfair barriers.

We must also provide our female students with the resources they need to succeed. These include access to quality education, mentorship programmes, and scholarships.

It is our responsibility as educators and leaders to ensure that our female students have the tools they need to succeed, she added.

Alice equally called on relevant stakeholders to promote a culture of inclusion and respect for women in schools and universities.

This means creating an environment where women feel safe and supported, where they are valued for their contributions and their ideas.

We must also challenge the traditional gender roles that have limited womens opportunities in the past, the president said.

On her part, the founder and pioneer president of the association, Safiya Sarki, said that ANSF was established to give female student a voice.

Sarki explained that the move was in response to the male-dominated National Association of Nigerian Students, where only two seats were reserved for females out of the 15 leadership positions in the association.

APC warns Ndume against attacking Tinubu

The ruling All Progressives Congress advised the former Chief Whip of the Senate, Ali Ndume, to reach President Bola Tinubu privately with his advice instead of criticising the governments policies or actions publicly.

The National Publicity Director of the APC, Bala Ibrahim, who gave the advice on Sunday in an interview with journalists, said as much as everybody had a right to air their opinion in a democracy, bigwigs like Ndume should seek to weigh their words before going public.

Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, had called on the President to tackle the hardship suffered by citizens before it was too late.

In a statement released in Abuja on Friday, Ndume claimed that certain bad actors close to Tinubu were responsible for pushing harmful reforms and policies which are aimed at destabilising the government.

Those who are bent on making the President look bad will stop at nothing in inflicting pain on Nigerians through the so-called reforms until things get out of hand, and the blame will be on President Tinubu, he stated.

The senator also advised the Tinubu administration to address the suffering caused by hyperinflation, which has been worsened by the frequent price hikes of essential goods and services.

Ndumes latest intervention came only months after the APC wrote the Senate to relieve him of his position as the Senate Chief Whip over his relentless public criticisms of President Tinubu and the ruling APC, a party to which he belongs.

He would later apologise and was pardoned by the APC, which requested that the Senate should restore him as the Chief Whip. The Senate has yet to restore Ndume as the Chief Whip.

Asked on Sunday if the ruling APC was concerned about Ndumes latest public advice to the President, the APC National Publicity Director, Ibrahim, said Ndume needed to tread with caution.

He said, In a democracy, people have the right to own opinion and ventilate their positions without anyone suppressing it. Ali Ndume is one of the Presidents advisers at large. If you happen to belong to the same party as the President, you must share certain things with him because he is working on the policies or agenda of the party.

As a senior party member, a legislator and former Chief whip for that matter, Ndume is an adviser by extension to all the leaders in our party. Therefore, he has ways of reaching out to them in private without necessarily going public. People must take note of their position and the fact that they have followers who will go to an extent to assess them based on what they say or do.

Many people hold Ndume in high esteem. So he must always weigh his words for fear of being misquoted or misinterpreted. But I want to believe he is doing so in good faith. Whether the APC is disappointed or will consider any sanction in a decision to be taken by the party.

The Borno lawmaker claimed that Tinubu had been caged and prevented from knowing the hardships Nigerians were passing through, an action that irked the ruling party.

He was immediately replaced by the Senator representing Borno North, Tahir Monguno following a directive issued to that effect in a letter written by the National Chairman of the party, Umar Ganduje and National Secretary, Senator Bashir Ajibola.

The request was put to voice votes by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and loudly affirmed by all the APC senators.

But a sober-looking Ndume told journalists after a two-hour closed-door meeting with the APC National Working Committee in Abuja two months ago that he has apologised to the party leadership.

Hardship: There’s severe hunger —Group begs Tinubu, wealthy Nigerians to act fast

Tinubu

The Atum Humanitarian and Charitable Initiative has pleaded with President Bola Tinubu administration to take proactive action to ameliorate the current hardship in the country.

Honourable Ismaila Yusuf Atus, Executive Chairman of the organization, in a statement on Sunday, noted that the rising cost of fuel has further reduced the purchasing-power of the citizens.

He called for urgent governments measures to reduce citizens suffering, acknowledging that existing initiatives were insufficient.

The organization also urged NGOs, business leaders, and wealthy individuals to unite and support communities in need.

The statement reads: The hunger is severe, and the rising fuel prices have only added to the hardships. Many people can no longer afford to feed themselves properly.

I urge those of us with NGOs to unite and support our communities. We also call on the government to take measures to alleviate the suffering in our nation.

While we acknowledge that the government is doing its best and that many initiatives were in place before this administration took over, we still urge them to work towards reducing the hardships faced by citizens.

We appeal to other well-off Nigerians to step forward during this critical time; the people need your support now more than ever. It is essential for the wealthy to share their resources and assist those in need.

Additionally, we call on business leaders and politicians not to hoard their wealth in bank accounts while the populace suffers.

Given the current challenges in the country, the Atum Humanitarian and Charitable Initiative has decided to assist Nigerians who are struggling with poverty by raising N500 million to help two million people.

It was reported reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, recently increased the price of Premium Motor Spirit(petrol) to N1,030 per litre, further worsening the hardship on Nigerians.

Nigeria must sustain 15 years of reforms to ensure impact —World Bank

The World Bank has stated that Nigeria must maintain its ongoing economic reforms for the next 10 to 15 years to establish itself as a leading economic power, not only in sub-Saharan Africa but also on the global stage.

These reforms, according to the bank, are crucial for ensuring sustainable growth and development, allowing Nigeria to compete with other emerging economies worldwide.

The Senior Vice President of the World Bank Group, Indermit Gill, gave this advice during the ongoing 30th Nigerian Economic Summit, organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group and the Ministry of Budget and National Planning on Monday in Abuja.

The three-day event is themed Collaborative Action for Growth, Competitiveness, and Stability.

Nigeria is currently grappling with a high inflation rate of 32.15 per cent, largely driven by the removal of the fuel subsidy, which has increased transportation and production costs.

Additionally, the unification of the foreign exchange market has led to significant fluctuations in currency value, further increasing the cost of goods and services across the country, contributing to a high cost of living.

In his welcome address, Gill said the reforms implemented by the current administration must continue to reverse the loss of N10 trillion enjoyed by the elite through fuel subsidies and multiple foreign exchange rates.

He noted that while implementing these reforms will be challenging, it is essential to persevere.

Gill stated, Nigeria will need to stay the course of current economic reforms for at least the next 10 to 15 years to transform its economy.

After being momentarily interrupted by a negative reaction from the audience, he continued, I don’t know if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me. If these reforms are sustained, Nigeria will transform its economy and become an engine of growth in sub-Saharan Africa.

It is very difficult to implement such reforms, but the rewards will be massive if they are maintained, he added.

Libyan authorities bow to pressure, Super Eagles set to return to Nigeria

Players and officials of the Nigeria national football team, the Super Eagles, are set to fly back from Libya.

This came after the Libyan government succumbed to pressure from external bodies, to refuel the Super Eagles chartered jet and clear their airspace.

The Nigerian players were abandoned at the Al Abraq International Airport without food, water or Internet for over 15 hours.

But they are now enroute Nigeria, as confirmed by sports journalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel, popularly known as OgaNlaMedia.

He wrote on X: After pressure from several quarters, the Libyan government has agreed to issue clearance for ValueJet Airline to fly and sell aviation fuel to the airline.

They came with a gimmick to issue a pre-clearance to land in Benghazi first before we fly to Nigeria. The same Benghazi that was busy yesterday.

The NFF has insisted that the clearance from Al-Abraq airport must be for the team to fly directly to Nigeria.

Benin, Togo owe Nigeria $5.7m electricity debt —NERC

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC has disclosed that International bilateral electricity customers in Benin Republic and Togo owe Nigeria $5.79m for the energy consumed in the second quarter of 2024.

The NERC revealed this in their latest second-quarter 2024 report analysed by The journalists on Sunday.

According to the report, out of the $15.60m invoice issued by the market operator between April and June, the international customers remitted $9.81m.

The foreign companies off-taking power from Nigeria are Para-SBEE in Benin Republic ($1.23m), Transcorp-SBEE in Benin, Mainstream-NIGELEC in Togo ($1.09m), and Odukpani-CEET in Togo ($3.47m).

Para-SBEE in Benin Republic remitted 71.21 per cent of the $4.29m billed, Transcorp-SBEE in Benin remitted 100 per cent of the $4.25m it was billed; Mainstream-NIGELEC in Togo paid 69.72 of $3.59m, and Odukpani-CEET did not remit anything during the period.

In the first quarter, it was reported that none of the four international bilateral customers being supplied by the power generation companies made payments against the cumulative invoice of $14.19m issued by the market operator for services rendered.

In the Q2 report, it was noted that some bilateral customers (both domestic and international customers) made payments for outstanding invoices from previous quarters.

Cumulatively, the international bilateral customers paid a total of $16.65m; Transcorp-SBEE and Mainstream-NIGELEC have made payments towards all outstanding invoices from previous quarters, the report disclosed.

It added, The four international bilateral customers being supplied by Gencos in the NESI made a payment of $9.81m against the cumulative invoice of $15.60m issued by the MO for services rendered in 2024/Q2, translating to a remittance performance of 62.88 per cent.

The NERC noted that the domestic bilateral customers made a payment of N1.30bn against the cumulative invoice of N1.99bn issued to them by the MO for services rendered in 2024/Q2 translating to 65.07 per cent remittance performance.

The market operator received N1.30bn from domestic bilateral customers towards outstanding invoices from previous quarters.

Mainstream Energy Solutions was said to have made payments towards all outstanding invoices from previous quarters.

On electricity subsidy, it was disclosed that between 2024/Q1 and 2024/Q2, the Federal Governments subsidy obligation was reduced by N253.24bn from N633.30bn (90.57 per cent of the total Genco invoice) to N380.06bn (52.51 per cent of the total Genco invoice).

The significant decrease in the subsidy obligation of the Federal Government is a result of the policy directive of the government to implement reviews of tariffs charged to Band A customers while the tariffs for Band B-E customers remain frozen at the rates payable since December 2022, it was explained.

The commission revealed that the total revenue collected by all Discos in 2024/Q2 was N431.16bn out of the N543.64bn that was billed to customers. This translates to a collection efficiency of 79.31 per cent.

In comparison, the total revenue collected by all Discos in 2024/Q1 was N291.62bn out of the N368.65bn billed to customers which translated to a 79.11 per cent collection efficiency.

The 79.31 per cent collection efficiency recorded in 2024/Q2 is 0.20pp higher than the collection efficiency recorded in 2024/Q1.

Soludo’s threats fail to end sit-at-home in Anambra

Commercial and economic activities were yesterday paralysed across major markets in the commercial cities of Onitsha, Nnewi, Obosi, and Ekwulobia in Anambra State.

Our correspondent, who went around the metropolis that yesterday, observed that the turnout of traders was very low and activities scanty, as most shops in major markets such as Onitsha Main Market, Ochanja Market, Nkpor motor parts market, Electrical Market, and Mgbuka Market remained under lock and key.

It was also observed that as usual on Mondays, motor parks, banks, petrol filling stations, schools, offices, and law courts remained shut while major roads were scanty and devoid of their usual busy activities.

This is despite the presence of personnel from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, who were patrolling some of the markets and metropolis conducting anti-sit-at-home operations.

They were also seen encouraging people to come out.

Some of the traders who came to the markets did not open their shops, as they were seen hanging around the premises of the market.

While speaking to our correspondent, some of them expressed concern about the security of their lives and property; should they open for business, they called for more security presence around the markets.

A textile trader at the Main Market, Udoka, said, Some of us came around to observe the situation. The presence of the NSCDC officers is encouraging, if they can continue; it will be a good development. Most people are afraid of opening their shops so as not to be attacked. Those that came to the market today are those that are selling by the roadside.

The Anambra State governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, had last week Monday, during his visit to Onitsha Main Market, threatened to seal any shop or plaza that closed on Mondays in the name of sit-at-home.

Soludo lamented the continuous boycott of activities on Mondays in the Southeast, arguing that the zone loses an estimated N19.6 billion every Monday.

The governor, who inspected the markets, warned that any trader or business that refuses to open on Mondays would face severe penalties, including the sealing of shops for up to one month.

He stressed that the persistent closure of businesses on Mondays would damage the local economy, as customers might start going to other regions to purchase goods.

He said, I am here to ensure that your shops are open. From now on, every Monday, the Main Market must be open for business.

If you fail to open, your shop will be sealed for one week, and if necessary, for up to one month. When you are ready to open, it must be from Monday through Saturday.

However, as of the time of filing this report, the governor had not visited the market, even though he promised to come for inspection during his visit last Monday.

It would be recalled that the leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra, in August 2021, introduced a sit-at-home order every Monday across the South-East to pressure the Federal Government to release its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Although the group had suspended the Monday sit-at-home order in preference for it to be implemented only on days Kanu would appear in court, the people have continued to observe it due to fear of being attacked by hoodlums.

TRCN laments shortage of teachers in Nigeria, global community

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, TRCN has raised an alarm over the shrinking number of teachers available to impart knowledge within Nigeria and by extension the global community.

A high-level panel on the teaching profession, set up by the United Nations revealed this in its report released in 2024.

This development has also been worsened by teachers leaving Nigeria en mass for greener pastures abroad due to dwindling fortunes in the profession.

Acting Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of TRCN, Dr Stella-Maria Nwokeocha confirmed the crisis yesterday, saying the situation is necessitating the 4th Annual Online Conference of Registered Teachers in Nigeria.

Nwokeocha recalled how the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, underscored this concern when in 2022 he convened the first-ever United Nations Summit on Education, tagged Transforming Education Summit. Teachers, teaching and the teaching profession which was one of the five tracks [sub-themes] of the Summit.

She said the report confirmed a dramatic shortage of teachers worldwide and the existence of millions of teachers who lack the support, skills and continuing training they need to meet the demands of rapidly changing education systems.

Its recommendations, further, call for urgent action to address serious issues in the teaching profession that pertain to pre-service teacher education and continuous professional development.

At an interactive session with the media, she said Nigeria as the Giant of Africa, even in matters of education, has a huge share of the teacher shortage and need for continuous updating of the professional skills and competencies of teachers along the lines identified by these evolving global concerns and recommendations.

This is why the 4th Annual Online Conference of Registered Teachers in Nigeria scheduled for October is a special response to the emerging global continental and national issues of interest to the teaching profession and education in Nigeria.

She listed the theme for this years conference as, Advancing Teacher Professionalization in Nigeria Towards Education 2030: Challenges, Strategies and Prospects

According to the TRCN boss, the conference is directly linked to international concerns which is expected to deal with strategies for quality teaching and lifelong learning; national and international best practices in continuous professional upskilling of teachers especially with respect to knowledge, skills, attitudes, conduct and orientation of teachers.

This tragic incident was reported by Delta Human Rights Activist, Comrade Israel Joe, in a Facebook post.

He wrote: A devastating blow to the Delta State Command of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The new DPO of Agbarho, who resumed just two days ago, along with the DPO of Orerokpe, CSP Paul, and their team, were ambushed at about 1:00 am while on a kidnap rescue operation near Agbarho Rail Station.

This loss is heartbreaking, as I can personally attest to the integrity of these officers.

“I extend my condolences to the Nigeria Police Force, the Delta State Command, and the family and friends of the officer who gave his life in the line of duty. None of these criminals should be spared”

The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.

It would be recalled that the Super Eagles contingents have now been granted passage to exit Libya after being held for over 14 hours at the Al Abraq International Airport.

Strike: NAFDAC refutes claims of workers demands

The director general of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has dismissed the claims made by aggrieved workers as the basis for their industrial action, describing them as untrue.

She emphasised that while the management has been attentive to the workers welfare, it is limited by its mandate in matters such as promotions and certain remuneration.

In a statement yesterday by the agency’s Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, the DG however reiterated her commitment to the workers welfare.

As at the time of filing this report, the workers have not called off the one-week-old industrial action, as their demands remain unmet, though, it was gathered that negotiations to end the strike are ongoing.

The workers are protesting the agency’s failure to promote the significant number of staff who participated in the 2024 promotion interviews.

According to the aggrieved workers, despite many of them meeting or surpassing the required pass mark, NAFDAC management cited a lack of vacancies, leaving more than 500 eligible employees without the promotions they had earned.

They are also protesting NAFDAC managements failure to uphold a 2022 agreement that addressed workers welfare and promotion issues.

However, in the statement, the DG refuted the claims made by the striking workers, stating that they are untrue, highlighting several actions taken to reposition the agency and create a conducive working environment for the staff.

According to Akintola, since the assumption of office in February 2022, the DG has spearheaded significant reforms to enhance the agency’s operational capacity.

According to him, the DG inaugurated 73 new operational vehicles, including 43 Hilux vans, 20 Toyota Camry cars, and 10 buses, in key locations like Abuja, Oshodi, and Apapa.

These additions were aimed at improving regulatory inspections, staff welfare, and operational efficiency.

Additionally, under her leadership, a N3.2 billion debt was cleared within a year of her appointment, demonstrating her commitment to cost-saving and effective management.

Whether it is a matter of promotion or estacode, the agency has been following the rules and is committed to promoting the workers welfare.

We are not in charge of the number of people to promote, we are only responsible for conducting exams.

The office of the Head of Service of the Federation (HOS) is always responsible for allocating available vacancies that the government can pay for.

It is not that there is a vacancy and we are not promoting. It is what the government can pay for that they approve as vacancy every year. It is not different from any other agency.

On the issue of estacode, as raised by the striking workers, the NAFDAC boss said there is nothing wrong with the agency’s estacode policy.

That is just playing to the gallery. Our staff have always been paid their due estacode and so, that is not an issue.

We are not different from any other agency, the estacode will be paid when the evidence of the trip is presented. We have never owed any staff any travel allowance, the DG affirmed.

Akintola noted, however, that there are positive signs on the horizon, suggesting the matter will soon be resolved, saying, The agency, like any other in the country, is not permitted to exceed approval given by the federal government but I can assure you that the matter is being looked into at the highest level of government for a possible resolution without further delay.

The government, the agency, and the unions are not oblivious of the importance of the role being played by NAFDAC in safeguarding the health of the nation.

A common ground would be found in due course, and everyone will go back to their duty posts.

Man bags 7 years imprisonment for defiling minor in Kano

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano State, yesterday sentenced 33-year-old Nasiru Isa to seven years in the correctional centre for sexually exploiting an 11-year-old girl.

The Presiding Justice S .M. Shuaibu convicted Isa, who resides in Darmanawa Bayan Gidan Kallo of Tarauni Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, on a one-count charge of sexual exploitation.

Shuaibu summarily tried and sentenced the defendant after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

He held that the Prosecution Counsel, Abdullahi Babale, proved his case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently sentenced the defendant to seven years without an option of fine.

According to him, the convict is to pay an additional N1 million fine as compensation.

Earlier, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, Kano State Command, alleged that the defendant committed the offence at Darmanawa Quarters, Tarauni LGA, Kano State on October 5.

Babale said the defendant allegedly lured his neighbours 11-year-old daughter into his wifes room and sexually exploited her.

The defendant had sex with the survivor on three different occasions.

Once in the defendants wifes room and twice at an uncompleted building.

The defendant gave the survivor bread, groundnut and N20 before sexually exploiting her, Babale told the court.

The prosecution presented two exhibits, including the confessional statement of the defendant and the survivors testimony, to the court to prove his case.

Babale said the offence contravened the provisions of section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015 and is punishable under Sec 26(1) of TIP ACT 2015.

IPOB debunks allegedly kidnap of foreigners by members

The Directorate of State (DOS) of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have called on the public to ignore what it described as false claims by the Anambra State Police, saying that they thwarted the kidnapping of foreign nationals by IPOB in Ogbunka Orumba LGA of Anambra State.

The group cited the claim by the Nigerian Police as a fictional story meant to attract readers to think that they are working.

IPOB in a statement by its media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful on Monday, stressed that the Nigerian police failed to understand that the international community knows that they are unprofessional.

The statement read in part, The unsubstantiated statement credited to the Nigerian Police as published by The Guardian newspapers of October 8, 2024 is a false claim, narrative and a deceptive headline to promote their criminal and unprofessional job actions.

The deceptive headline quoted, The Nigerian Police rescued foreigners from IPOB in Ogbunka Orumba Anambra State. For public records, IPOB has never and will never engage in kidnapping for ransom, talk of kidnapping foreign nationals.

The Nigerian Police claimed in the newspaper that they thwarted kidnapping attempt of foreign nationals by IPOB without providing further and full details about the incident. Instead of providing verifiable evidence of their bogus claims and propaganda, the Nigerian Police using some Nigerian compromised newspapers started promoting their criminal activities.

The Nigerian Police and the compromised Nigerian journalists in the Guardian newspaper used a deceptive headline to attract traffic to promote the fake news from their moronic news. The Nigerian government and her Police working with some compromised media try to demonize IPOB while promoting the Nigerian Security Forces and its agent provocateur. Their plans are dead on arrival.

IPOB stands for the defense and freedom of Biafrans and will not use fake news as the Nigerian Government and its Agents were using to deceive their gullible followers in Nigeria. Only a fool will listen to a man speaking from Nigeria police and their lies, Nigerian police know that IPOB is engaging foreign diplomats for Biafra Liberation. Only a fool will listen to a compromised institution in the world who are just playing an amateur script written by the Nigerian government to destroy the Biafra struggle.

Acting on a poorly written script by the Nigerian Security Agencies to damage the Biafra viability will not work. We cant be involved in violent arm struggle and kidnapping and at the same time be involved in diplomatic engagements to restore Biafra.

The Nigerian police is being used by the Nigerian government to make carricature of the Biafran struggle. IPOB will see the end of the Nigerian government and their criminal activities.

While urging the public to ignore the concocted lies by the Anambra State Police Command that they thwarted the kidnapping attempt of foreign nationals by IPOB, the group insisted, The claim didn’t happen.

It described the claim as part of the fictional series by the Nigerian Police to attract traffic for the unsuspecting public to read the fake news from their criminals masquerading as anti- Biafra agitators.

IPOB added, Nigerian police is just doing the job criminals do to blackmail innocent movement fighting for the liberation of its people. Nigerian government, and their security agencies are relentlessly promoting their fake news to deceive their gullible followers.

IPOB have overcome such infamous activities of Nigeria police. Nigerian Government sponsored agent provocateurs in the past, IPOB will keep matching forward.
