Ondo: Boy, 20, kills 65-year-old woman over N3000

Dead body Corpse

Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, otherwise known as Amotekun Corps, have arrested a 20-year-old boy for allegedly killing a 65-year-old woman in Owo, headquarters of the Owo Local Council Area of Ondo State.

The suspect, Friday Akinmade, allegedly hit the deceased with a plank on her head after accusing her of stealing N3,000 from his room.

Parading the suspect along with other criminals at the headquarters of the corps in Akure, the state capital, the commander of the corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed that another 21-year-old suspect was arrested for attempted murder.

What the security situation has enumerated is telling us that, as a result of the harsh economic situation we have in the country, there are more cases of housebreaking.

A 30-year-old man who engaged in malicious damage, cultism, and attempted murder of law enforcement agents. We have a 42-year-old man who attacked Amotekun officers in a bid to cover his nefarious activity by the name of Gbenro.

“We equally have Samuel Peter, a 21-year-old man, who engaged in an attempted murder, and one Akimade Friday, who outrightly murdered and killed a 65-year-old woman. This is a 20-year-old boy.

“In the same way, we narrowed down on one Segun Owolabi, 20 years old, who engages in stealing motorcycles and robbing to dispossess rightful owners. We have a gang that specialises in burgling houses, especially when owners of such houses are not in their houses. We have Toba, Pelumi, Ogumade, and Oriade, whose age bracket ranges between 22 and 25. We equally have Shegwo Yusuf, who engages in malicious damage to household properties”

Senate strips CBN power to appoint CEO of NDIC

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday stripped the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, of power to appoint the CEO of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC through an amendment of the Bank Deposit Regulators Principal Act.

This followed a report submitted to the upper legislative Chamber by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru which was debated on Tuesday.

The Central Bank of Nigeria had the power to appoint the Chairman and Board members of the NDIC in the principal Act. The provision had been a subject of argument, but the amendment which passed a third reading after rigorous debate at a plenary presided by the Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio, now consolidated the power of the President to appoint the Chairman and members of the board of the NDIC while the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN which hitherto recommend to the appointees, would now concentrate on supervising the corporation.

The passage of the bill was also meant to strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation to safeguard depositors, ensure the stability of financial institutions, and promote trust in the banking system.

The legislation, titled, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation Act No 33 of 2023, was sponsored by Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru (Lagos East) and all the members of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions.

In the principal Act, Abiru explained that the NDIC will enjoy its autonomy and independence in line with the current realities across the world.

He said: The NDIC based on the new amendment of its Act, would focus on the examination of the banks and despite the fact that the NDIC 2023, the Act made substantial improvements to the 2006 Act, its implementation had been fraught with continuous debates.

He specifically said stakeholders had consistently been engaging in a series of appeals on the need for an amendment of the Act to address all the issues that have been raised concerning it.

He said, “The Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2024, is thus a critical piece of legislation aimed at strengthening the Nigerian financial system.

He said, “Considering the above, therefore, the general consensus among stakeholders was that it is important that the legal framework is reviewed.

“This is to make the Corporation more effective in discharging its functions, safeguard its independence and autonomy and bring it in line with current realities and best practices.

“This is particularly because the Corporation plays a vital role in safeguarding the interests of depositors and promoting confidence in the financial sector.

“The evolving challenges in the global and domestic banking environments necessitate the amendment of the current law to keep pace with these developments and ensure the NDIC remains fit for purpose”

After consideration of the report, the bill was passed into law by the Senate President.

FCT begins clampdown on Abuja street traders, beggars

Wike

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has launched a sweeping crackdown on beggars, scavengers, and street vendors, with 34 individuals detained on Monday across various parts of Abuja.

This action followed a recent ministerial directive ordering such individuals to leave the FCT.

The operation, conducted by a joint task force comprising the police, military, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other paramilitary agencies, targeted four major areas: the City Centre, the Airport Road, the Kubwa-Gwarinpa area, and the Asokoro-Nyanya-Karu corridor.

The FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, described the clampdown as a national assignment, directing officers to enforce the mandate with professionalism and resolve.

“We will come back and assess our achievements, then, we will go back if there is a need for us to continue it”, Disu stated.

According to the Director of Security, Adamu Gwary, the FCTA plans to carry out the operation both day and night over two weeks.

Gwary, represented by Peter Olumuji, said, We have the metro, which is the City Centre. We have the Airport Road that covers the entire airport road from the city gates up to Bill Clinton Road.

“We also have the Kubwa area that covers the Kubwa, Gwarinpa up to Dei Dei. And we have the last group that covers Asokoro, AYA, Nyanya, Karu, and Jikwoyi. All these will be carried out simultaneously”

He noted that 15 beggars and 19 scavengers were arrested across other zones, adding that many beggars in the city centre had gone into hiding.

“We realised that most of them heard the voice of the minister. Notwithstanding, we have one or two who are still trying to test the waters and we have been able to apprehend them. We also have 15 beggars and 19 scavengers that we have picked up in various sectors and we are still counting”, he added.

It was also learnt that the arrested individuals would be taken to the FCTA’s rehabilitation centre in Kuchikon, Bwari Area Council, where they would be profiled and assessed.

Those willing to acquire vocational skills will receive training aimed at personal empowerment, while those unwilling to participate will be returned to their states of origin, according to the Director of Social Welfare for the FCTA, Dr. Sani Rabe.

The Head of Enforcement at the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, Kaka Bello emphasised that the operation is part of a larger initiative to rid the capital of street nuisances, including unauthorised roadside vendors and technicians occupying public spaces.

Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike, said the FCT Administration will float a new security scheme to flush beggars out of Abuja City.

Wike disclosed this at the inauguration of the upgrading of the War College/Army Checkpoint Road and other ancillary roads in Ushafa, Bwari Area Council, Abuja on Monday.

He said that the move was to rid the city of beggars, who have taken over major streets of the nations capital city.

“Stay in your state and beg. The FCT cannot be the centre of beggars. It is the only city we have, to showcase to the world. We will not allow it”

The minister, who noted that some people chose to beg, added that the FCT Administration would not allow that in the city.

“If you want to beg, go to the villages, but leave the city centre.

“The city must be clean, and we are ready for criminals”, he added.

Wike explained that the measure was a part of the measures to improve security in the FCT, adding that security agencies were doing their best to keep the residents safe.

It would be recalled that Wike had on October 22 declared war against beggars, whom he said were defacing Abuja city and posing security risk.

The minister had warned all beggars to leave the city or be flushed out.

Scrapping of Niger Delta Ministry a total betrayal –Asari Dokubo

Asari Dokubo

Mujahid Asari Dokubo, former President of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, yesterday criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to dissolve the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, calling it a total betrayal of the Niger Delta people.

Speaking to ARISE News on Tuesday, Dokubo expressed disappointment, saying the move reflects a longstanding culture of sidelining the Niger Delta region in national development.

This decision is a betrayal of the people of the Niger Delta, Dokubo asserted. There has been this culture in Nigeria of trying to shortchange the people of the Niger Delta, taking, robbing us of our gains.

Asari Dokubo

He emphasized that his criticism stems from his commitment to representing his people rather than his personal relationship with the president, which he said remains separate from his duties as an advocate for the Niger Delta community.

Dokubo, a prominent activist and former militant leader, has been a vocal proponent of Niger Delta rights. He argued that the dissolution of the ministry undermines federal commitments to the region, which has long sought increased attention and resources for development and environmental rehabilitation due to extensive oil exploration.

As a well-known figure in the Niger Deltas political landscape, Dokubo’s comments were likely to resonate across the region, fueling discussions on government accountability and the need for sustainable policies that prioritize local interests.

The workshop featured an array of abstract artworks that reflected the artists’ concerns, drawing attention to local challenges. Uzodimma promises steady power supply soon in Imo …Set to revive the Egbema power plant

Governor Hope Uzodimma has reassured residents of Imo State of his administration’s commitment to put in place a steady power supply to attract more investors.

He disclosed that already the State government is partnering foreign investors to revive the Egbema power plant in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government with a 380 MW to boost electricity for the entire State.

The governor, who made the promise in a speech delivered through his Special Adviser on Public Orientation, Collins Ughala during the 2024 Chapel Harvest of the Anglican communion at Umuokanne, Ohaji/Egbema presided by Bishop of the diocese Reverend C.C Oparaojiaku noted that their continuity to support his administration would attract further development.

He recalled that the people of Ohaji/Egbema have benefited immensely from his government listing the General Hospital at Umuokanne and the numerous appointments he has extended to them, including appointing a Judge of the High Court of Imo State from Ohaji. He added that that was the first time someone from the area would become a judge.

Ughalaa informed the people that the governor is bringing more developments to society” especially partnering with investors like the AFREXIM bank .

“There cannot be meaningful development if the issue of electricity is not resolved. That is why the governor has decided that in order for him to bring development and industrialise the state, there is a need to revive the Egbema Power Plant and power the state’s economy.

“You cannot be praying and asking God to bring development to your area, and at the same time, you are fighting against the government’s development initiative.

“Every development happens on the ground, not in the air. If you look at states that have seen development, it happened because the people supported the government and did not fight the government. Therefore, I urge you not to join those who fight the government and reject the government’s development initiative, but join those who support the government because that is the only way the government can succeed and deliver dividends of democracy to us.”

“The government is all of us, and we should stop seeing the government as them versus us. No, the government is all of us, and we have different roles to play. Instead of fighting the government, let us offer our support and play our roles for a better society.

“The government is made up of human beings. In Imo State, we are mostly Christians, and our brothers and sisters are in different fields. No matter where you are, you should play your own roles for a better society. If all of us commit to doing what is right, we wouldn’t have the challenges we have now in society,” He said.

Biden thanks Tinubu over release of Binance executive, Gambaryan

President of the United States of America, Mr. Joe Biden, yesterday evening, conveyed his gratitude to Nigeria and President Bola Tinubu for the release of Binance executive, Tigran Gambaryan.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, revealed this while briefing State House Correspondents on the 30-minute voice call between both leaders.

I have been directed by Mr President to brief you with regards to his phone call with US President, Joseph Biden at about 4 pm today.

The two leaders exchanged pleasantries and President Biden proceeded to thank President Tinubu for his partnership and for Nigeria’s partnership, and in particular, for the collaboration between the two countries with regards to the release of one of the suspects of the cryptocurrency exchange company that were all aware of, Tuggar said.

Gambaryan left Nigeria on Monday after eight months of lawful detention, his family confirmed.

Today, American citizen Tigran Gambaryan left Nigeria to return home to his family after 8 months of unlawful detention, the statement from the family partly read.

Gambaryan, a senior Binance executive was detained in Nigeria in early 2024 during a crackdown on cryptocurrency activity by the Nigerian government.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission filed money laundering charges against him, which Binance and Gambaryan have denied.

However, his extended detention drew international attention, as his health reportedly deteriorated while held at Kuje Prison.

U.S. diplomats and lawmakers pushed for his release, emphasising both his declining health and the need for transparent proceedings.

Despite repeated bail applications, he remained in custody for nearly eight months, raising diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and Nigeria.

An Abuja Federal High Court had discharged Gambaryan from the money laundering charges.

This followed diplomatic and public advocacy, enabling him to return to the U.S. for urgent medical care.

Binance CEO, Richard Teng expressed relief, highlighting Binance’s commitment to regulatory cooperation in Nigeria.

Responding to Biden, President Tinubu thanked him and the US for the partnership and collaboration in numerous sectors, emphasizing greater collaboration with regards to security in West Africa.

Biden also affirmed that this partnership will continue as the future of the world resides in Africa which is why it is important for this partnership to continue.

During the phone conversation, Biden also assured Tinubu that the US is keen on securing permanent status for two African countries, including Nigeria, on the United Nations Security Council.

Tuggar explained, The two leaders also discussed the issue of the permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council.

President Biden, once again, assured that the United States is committed to seeing Africa having two permanent seats.

He also reiterated that he does not see any reason why one of those seats should not belong to Nigeria, given its position in Africa, its stature and its importance.

Tinubu also highlighted that Nigeria is committed to upholding the rule of law and follows established legal processes, which the U.S. recognises and respects.

He pointed out the shared values between the two nations, noting Nigeria’s adoption of a government system inspired by the U.S. model when it returned to constitutional democracy in 1999.

Both leaders agreed on the importance of legal frameworks and pledged ongoing collaboration in this area.

The conversation concluded with both sides expressing a commitment to maintaining communication even as President Biden’s term ends in January 2025.

Demanding new aircraft for Shettima insensitive –Peter Obi tackles Borno Speaker

The 2023 Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, yesterday said its insensitive for anyone to demand a new aircraft for Vice President, Kashim Shettima following the recent incident in the United States, US.

The Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkareem Lawan, had claimed that Shettima’s life is at risk due to the faulty presidential aircraft he is using to represent President Bola Tinubu in official engagements across the globe.

Reacting, Obi said the Speaker was unconcerned about the prevailing economic hardship confronting Nigerians.

Posting on X, Obi wrote: I just read a disturbing comment in the media space attributed to one of the supposed political leaders in the country that the life of the Vice President is in danger because of the faults recorded in his official aircraft.

The leader went further to urge the Federal Government to purchase a new aircraft for the Vice President.

In making such a remark now, the speaker is insensitive and obviously unconcerned about the prevailing economic situation in the country.

That Nigerians are facing untold hardship at this moment is no secret.

Such a provoking call is coming from a person who probably is oblivious to the fact that Nigeria, at present, has continued to manifest every trait of a failed state.

We are today among one of the eleven worst-governed African nations in the last 10 years. We are also among the 20 most hungry nations in the world, with our people facing worsening mass poverty, extreme hunger and starvation.

Our nation remains the poverty capital of the world, with our per capita income crashing further from $1700 in 2023 to $1109 this year.

Are these not the issues that should be prioritized by committed leaders?

Our national electricity grid has so far collapsed eight times this year alone and 105 times in the last ten years, plunging our small businesses into great losses and households into darkness.

In the past 15 months, several businesses have closed down or become distressed due to the harsh economic environment in the country.

The Vice President travels mostly in the country’s national airline, Garuda Indonesia.

And since we have recently undeservedly bought one, it should be used on essential, inevitable trips of the President and Vice President.

I appeal to the President, Vice President, and our public office holders that our present precarious situation calls only for minimal and highly contributory inevitable travels.

It is time to sit down and find solutions to our litany of challenges for the wellbeing of the people and the development of our country.

Nigeria will rise again if the leadership can commit to selfless service. Are these not the issues that should preoccupy us as leaders, rather than being consumed by our selfish desires for needless luxury at the expense of the people we are called to serve?

What does Nigeria’s Vice President need a new jet for, and what value are all Presidential and Vice Presidential trips adding to our present situation?

I’m sorry, Abia lawmaker apologises for assaulting Bolt driver

A member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, who assaulted an e-hailing (Bolt) driver who went to deliver a package to him has tendered a public apology.

Ikwechegh admitted that his behaviour did not meet the standards expected of a public official.

He issued the public apology on Monday, saying, “As a public servant, I recognise the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.

He said he regretted the harm and embarrassment his actions had caused Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the public.

He also confirmed his cooperation with the Nigeria Police, pledging to support their investigation and uphold accountability.

“I, Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, Member of the House of Representatives, wish to address a deeply disturbing incident that occurred at my residence recently. A video has surfaced showing me engaging in unacceptable behaviour towards an Uber driver who came to deliver a waybill for me. I am deeply sorry for my actions and acknowledge that they were unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official.

“As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry. I understand that my actions have caused harm and embarrassment to the driver, my constituents, and the nation at large”

“I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter. I support their efforts to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable”, the statement read

He also applauded the Nigeria Police Force for upholding the law and protecting the rights of the citizens.

He stated, “I also appreciate the swift condemnation of my actions by my party and the Nigerian Police, demonstrating our collective commitment to upholding the law and protecting the rights of all citizens”

Ikwechegh noted that he was taking immediate steps to address the underlying issues that led to this incident.

“I am seeking professional counselling to ensure that such behaviour never happens again. Additionally, I will be engaging in community service initiatives focused on promoting respect, empathy, and understanding”.

He, however, called on all Nigerians to join him in fostering a culture of respect, tolerance, and understanding.

”We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Thank you for your understanding and I hope that you will join me on this journey towards healing and growth”, Ikwechegh added.

In a video that went viral on Monday, the distressed driver, Abuwatseya recorded the incident that took place between him and Ikwechegh at the lawmakers residence in Maitama, Abuja.

The video showed the visibly angry lawmaker repeatedly slapping and insulting the driver, allegedly because the driver had asked him to come out and collect the snail he was delivering.

He also threatened to make the driver disappear without facing any consequences.

The incident has, however, generated public outbursts with many condemning his action.

Following the incident, Ikwechegh was invited by the police for interrogation at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters.

The police also slammed the lawmaker for bringing the name of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun into disrepute by daring the driver to make calls through to him after slapping him.

ASUP postpones planned strike

ASUP

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has postponed its planned strike to December 2, 2024, to allow the Federal Government to address its concerns.

This comes after a resolution meeting between stakeholders convened by the Education Ministry on October 23.

The union’s demands include resolving abuses of laws, improving staff welfare, and addressing infrastructure and promotion issues. If the government fails to act before December 2, the strike will commence.

ASUP’s National President, Comrade Kpanja Shammah, made the disclosure in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja

He said: “The Union’s NEC therefore met again on an emergency note on the 24th of October 2024 to review the action plan as proposed in the meeting with the stakeholders and determine the next steps in its struggle for the survival of Polytechnic Education in the country.

“After exhaustive deliberations, the Union resolved to defer its proposed industrial action to the 2nd of December, 2024.

“The decision was taken to gauge the government’s commitment to implementing the action plan as agreed at the meeting of 23rd October, 2024.

“It is therefore the expectation of our Union that government will take advantage of the period to show commitment by diligently executing the action plan on each of the eleven items of dispute or risk a comprehensive withdrawal of service by academic staff in the Nigeria Polytechnic System.”

Government should dialogue with them and avoid strike actions.

Senate To Begin Screening Of Ministerial Nominees Tuesday

This follows the earlier request to the Senate by President Tinubu to confirm the new ministerial nominees.  The Senate is set to begin screening of seven ministerial nominees recently announced by President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday (tomorrow).

This follows the earlier request to the Senate by President Tinubu to confirm the new ministerial nominees. The President had hours after their nomination last week, written to the upper chamber, asking the lawmakers to consider and confirm the seven nominees for appointment as ministers. They include Nentawe Yilwatda (Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction), Muhammadu Dingyadi (Labour & Employment), Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu (State Foreign Affairs), and Jumoke Oduwole (Industry, Trade and Investment). Others are Idi Mukhtar Maiha (Livestock Development), Yusuf Ata (State, Housing and Urban Development), and Suwaiba Ahmad (State Education).

The confirmation request to the Senate came after Tinubu reshuffled his cabinet. The president sacked five of his ministers, redeployed 10 of them, and appointed seven others. Those sacked included Uju-Ken Ohanenye as Minister of Women Affairs; Lola Ade-John as Minister of Tourism; Tahir Mamman as Minister of Education; Abdullahi Gwarzo as Minister of State, Housing and Urban Development; and Jamila Ibrahim as Minister of Youth Development.

Tinubu thereafter appointed seven others. Among those reassigned were Yusuf Sununu who was removed as the Minister of State for Education and named as the Minister of State, Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.

Olatunji Alausa was reassigned as the Minister of Education, removing him as the Minister of State, Health. Bello Goronyo was removed as Minister of State, Water Resources and Sanitation and reassigned as Minister of State Works.

Abubakar Momoh was relieved as Minister of Niger Delta Development and reassigned as Minister of Regional Development.

Rivers crisis: High Court Chief Judge Tsoho to appear before NJC probe panel

Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, today, October 29, to appear before the probe panel of the National Judicial Council, NJC, over judgements being churned out by his court in respect of cases on the Rivers political crisis.

Justice Tsoho expected to defend the court under his watch over some petitions brought before NJC by some lawyers and litigants, mainly on Rivers’ political disputes.

The chief judge is to specifically explain why the Rivers cases are being heard in Abuja instead of the Port Harcourt division of the court.

One of the lawyers in one of the matters, Femi Falana, had last Friday fired a letter to the chief judge, querying why the cases emanating from Port Harcourt are being heard in Abuja instead of in the Port Harcourt division, where he claimed that the Court has five judges on its bench.

He drew the attention of the court to insinuations being peddled in some quarters that judgements are being allegedly procured in Abuja.

Although the issue was tabled before the court and Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of Abuja division hearing one of the cases was asked to recuse herself for Port Harcourt division to take over, Abdulmalik in a ruling refused to grant the request.

The judge rather held that only the Chief Judge had the administrative function of assigning cases to judges.

It will be recalled that the Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo and Rivers State governorship election petition tribunals sat in Abuja to ensure the security of the lives of judges and their supporting staff over the volatility of political situations in some of the states.

Abia federal Lawmaker commends DSS  for providing kanu’s healthcare needs

Rep. Obi Aguocha (LP-Abia) has commended the efforts the Department of State Services  (DSS), were putting in place to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu’s healthcare needs were met.

Obi also commended the DSS for the approval of Kanu’s request for access and attention to private medical care and to a doctor of his choice.

Aguocha, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said that he was granted access to visit Kanu,  the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Oct. 24.

He said that he was recently approached by Kanu’s legal team which complained of its inability to interface with the detained IPOB leader.

He said that the visit was part of the ongoing effort at finding a political solution to the continued detention of Kanu.

Aguocha confirmed that Kanu had received private medical attention as recently as Oct. 3.

The lawmaker also commended Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, for resolving the access restriction.

“I took urgent steps in writing the DSS and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, seeking their immediate intervention.

“A meeting was called, and it was positive, and the DSS informed me that the restriction to accessing Kanu was occasioned by his lawyers asking the judge to recuse herself,” he said.

He however, said that he was allowed to have an audience with Kanu in the company of an immediate family member.

Aguocha said that  he remained optimistic that a political solution will be achieved, leading to the release of Kanu and also for the peace and stability of the South-East.

Fuel scarcity will soon be over, says IPMAN

Mr Ukadike Chinedu, the Publicity Secretary, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), says that the scarcity of fuel being presently experienced will soon be over.

Chinedu told the News Agency of Nigeria that the shifting of the supply chain was the cause of the scarcity in the country, adding that in a few weeks, the product would be available.

“The supply chain is dependent on the importation of petroleum products but now the Federal Government has decided that they will not import but patronise Dangote and advised marketers to buy from him.

“So now, Dangote is reliably supplying the products and other products of crude oil,” he said.

Chinedu said that other reasons for the scarcity include documentation and logistics problems, among others in the interchange.

He said that Dangote had supplied 300 trucks and subsequently had been giving NNPCL the product.

Chinedu said that the use of vessels to supply in the coastal area would avert heavy usage of trucks on the roads.

“This will reduce road accidents, vehicles travelling long distances would be reduced, and it would help reduce prices.

“So we are trying to conclude the arrangement of sending through vessels to coastal areas to be able to decongest the road usage by trucks.

“All these things cause a little drift in the supply chain, in a little time, all these things will be fixed,” he said.

Chinedu said that the NNPCL had resumed supply, and major marketers were buying, adding that the independent marketers were trying to conclude their arrangement with Dangote so they could start buying.

He said that It was important for Dangote to sell to independent marketers, to reduce the issue of middlemen in terms of the distribution chain.

Chinedu said that IPMAN would no longer be relying on other competitors, for its products.

Also, he said that IPMAN had unveiled their website Ipman.ng.com.

Chinedu said that the website would enable marketers to pay through the portal and get their petroleum products, which would help to organise IPMAN to be on the front burner in the tax distribution team.

Also, he said that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) had promised to pay marketers N10 billion as part of the outstanding claims with the Petroleum Equalisation Fund (PEF).

Chinedu said that marketers were hopeful that soon the money would get to various marketers.

“We have confidence in the authority of NMDPRA and also agreed and promised to give IPMAN bulk purchase agreement with Dangote.”

He said that once discussions had been concluded, the product would be available across the country.

Delta woman in police net for sex trafficking daughter

“I can confirm that the mother is in detention at the police headquarters and the police are investigating the whole matter”, she said.

Helicopter crash: Two bodies, not five recovered, says NSIB

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has clarified its previous statement, retracting the claim that five bodies had been recovered from the Atlantic Ocean following the crash of a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, registration number 5N-BQG, operated by Eastwind Aviation, last Thursday.

The Director General of the NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh, initially announced on Channels TV that the number of bodies retrieved from the crash site had risen to five. However, on Sunday, the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, issued a statement correcting this, confirming that only three bodies have been recovered so far.

Oladeji stated, “Contrary to reports suggesting that five bodies have been recovered, we confirm that only three bodies were retrieved on the day of the incident. Efforts to locate the remaining individuals continued on October 25, 2024, and although divers located two additional bodies, strong ocean currents, and limited visibility prevented their retrieval at that time.

“The recovery of the remaining persons on board remains a top priority for the coordinated search, rescue, and recovery team.”

The NSIB also announced plans to deploy a Remotely Operated Vehicle equipped with advanced sensors and cameras to the site to improve visibility and precision in the deep-water environment.

“This ROV will facilitate detailed inspection, enable targeted retrieval operations, and assist in gathering vital evidence that will support our investigation into the incident,” Oladeji added.

Quoting NSIB Director General, Capt. Alex Badeh, Oladeji emphasised the Bureau’s dedication to the recovery and investigation efforts.

He said, “The NSIB, along with our partners, is fully committed to locating and recovering all individuals and critical components from this unfortunate accident. Our team is working tirelessly under challenging conditions to conduct a thorough investigation that will provide clear answers for families, loved ones, and the nation.”

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited also reiterated that only three bodies have been recovered. In a statement signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, the NNPCL confirmed, “Beyond the three bodies found in the ill-fated helicopter operated by Eastwind Aviation that crashed on Thursday in Port Harcourt, no other bodies have been recovered.

“The Company further notes that intensified search and rescue operations with the relevant authorities remain ongoing. Once again, our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this tragic incident.”

APC continues to mount opposition against Bianca’s ministerial nomination

The Anambra State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) has continued its opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Amb. Bianca Ojukwu as minister.

inubu-led government had on Wednesday announced the nomination of the widow of Biafra Warlord, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu as minister designate for the ministry of state for foreign affairs, but APC stakeholders in Anambra described it as anti-party, as Bianca is known to be a member of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Chief Bunty Onuigbo representing stakeholders in Anambra had criticized the appointment, while Dr. Josef Onoh, Bianca’s brother and former spokesperson of Tinubu’s campaign council had condemned Anambra APC for voicing their rejection of the nomination.

But internal crises seems to be brewing in Anambra APC, as more members have come out to voice their rejection of the nomination.

In a strongly-worded statement released by the Zonal Publicity Secretary of Anambra Central APC and coordinator of the Anambra APC Renewal Group (AARG), Igboeli Arinze Napoleon, he

criticized both the ministerial appointment and recent allegations made by Dr. Josef Onoh.

Condemning the nomination, Napoleon said: “While we acknowledge the president’s prerogative in ministerial appointments, we must express our concerns about the potential for discord within party ranks.

“This controversy reflects deeper divisions within the party as it grapples with internal restructuring and positioning for future electoral contests.

“AARG would soon call for a more inclusive approach to party appointments and the need for unity within the state chapter of our party.”

He also tackled Josef Onoh who accused Anambra APC of turning in an abysmal 5,000 votes for president Tinubu in 2023.

“Dr. Josef Onoh’s allegations are infantile. We challenge Onoh’s credibility as a party spokesperson. There was no question of anti-party activities during the last presidential elections from Anambra.

“While some leaders had worked against party interests, the majority of Anambra APC members remained loyal to the party’s presidential candidate. There were similar challenges in other states, including Osun, Katsina, and Yobe.

The dispute has also brought to light broader issues within the party’s state structure. Chief Basil Ejidike leads the only legitimate APC faction in Anambra, we have no divided leadership.

“Onoh cited the party’s electoral performance in Anambra, receiving only 5,111 votes in the presidential election, but this still exceeded the neighboring Enugu State’s tally of 4,772 votes.”

On whether the rejection was because Bianca was a woman, Napoleon said the Anambra State chapter of the party had always supported women for positions, including Sharon Ikeazor and Senator Margery Okadigbo, insisting that the party had capable women within its fold, instead of bringing one from outside.

Abuja building collapse: FCT police confirm rescue of five persons

The FCT Police Command has confirmed that five persons have been rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building at Vidaz Estate, within the Sabon Lugbe Extension of Abuja.

Approximately 40 people were reportedly trapped under the rubble of the collapsed storey building in Sabon Lugbe, a suburban community in Abuja.

Reports also stated that the collapse occurred around 5 pm on Saturday, while the victims were still inside the building.

In a statement signed by SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Police Command, on Sunday, the police said no casualties had been recorded.

The police added that preliminary investigations revealed that the FCT authorities had previously demolished the building, as it was located in an illegally acquired area.

Adeh, however, explained that scavengers were at the site of the demolished building to retrieve scrap metal, which then led to the compromise of the structure and its resultant secondary collapse.

She, therefore, urged residents to respect the boundaries of demolished structures to avoid any similar occurrences in the future.

The statement reads, “The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the collapse of a building situated in Vidaz Estate, within the Sabon Lugbe extension, FCT. Our preliminary investigations reveal that the building was previously demolished by the FCT authorities due to its location in an illegally acquired area.”

“Regrettably, the structure was further compromised by scavengers who had been tampering with the remnants for scrap metal, ultimately leading to its secondary collapse.

“A total of five individuals were successfully rescued from the debris, and there were no reported fatalities. In light of this incident, we urge the public to respect the boundaries of demolished structures and construction sites, ensuring their safety and preventing similar occurrences in the future.”

Meanwhile, the FCT Director of Development Control, Muktar Galadima, also issued a statement on Sunday, stating that news of the collapsed building was “just propaganda”.

He clarified that the building is within the site currently under demolition as of Thursday, adding that information gathered indicated that the site recorded an influx of over 500 scavengers, which triggered the remains of a demolished slab to fall on them.

NASU, SSANU to begin strike Monday over 4 months’ withheld salaries

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, (SSANU), have resolved to embark on an indefinite strike commencing Monday.

The Joint Action Committee, (JAC), of non-teaching staff unions in the universities, which is coordinating the action has directed its members to proceed on the strike nationwide.

The fresh strike is hinged on the non-payment of their four months withheld salaries from when they joined an industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) during the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The strike according to the leaders of the two unions would commence on Sunday night of October 27, 2024.

JAC in a circular to all branch Chairman of NASU and SSANU in the universities and inter-university centres, with the title: “Latest development in respect of the withheld four (4) months salaries,” explained that the strike initially billed for 23rd October was rescheduled because of the Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches on the said date.

The circular which was signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU President, explained that the strategic change in timing was for effective coordination and for both Unions to be on the same page.

JAC regretted that despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for 50 percent of the four months’ withheld salaries to be paid, the alleged inaction of the Minister of Finance raised questions about the government’s commitment to resolving the issue.

According to the circular, “It is on record that the JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation. However, the sincerity of the government to our cause is in doubt.

“In view of this, the leadership of JAC has decided that the effective date for the strike be moved to midnight of Sunday, 27th October 2024, to allow the Branch Officers of NASU to be on ground before commencing the strike.

“We had to do this strategic change in timing for effective coordination and for both Unions to be on the same page.

“We express our deepest appreciation for your steadfast commitment to the leadership and we affirm our determination to persist in this struggle until ultimate victory is secured.

Niger Delta youths knock NNPCL’s Kyari over failed Port Harcourt refinery promises

Youth groups under the Coalition of Niger Delta Youths Against Poverty, Insecurity & Environmental Degradation (CONDYAPIED) have voiced frustration with the Group Chief Executive Officer, (GCEO), of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, for not delivering on his commitment to operationalize the Port Harcourt Refinery by the end of September 2024.

Kyari had repeatedly assured Nigerians that the Port Harcourt refinery would resume local refining to reduce petroleum prices significantly by the September deadline.

Yet, a month later, the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries remain non-operational, leaving only the Dangote Refinery in production. Consequently, marketers continue to rely on imported refined petroleum, driving up costs for consumers.

In a statement jointly signed on Sunday by CONDYAPIED Coordinator Engr. Jonas Igariga and General Secretary Comrade Jack Opobo, the coalition demanded Kyari’s resignation and a public apology to Nigerians.

“In a society where leaders have a conscience, figures like Mele Kyari would bow their heads in shame, resign, and apologize for plunging the nation into hardship,” the coalition declared.

“The NNPCL GCEO has repeatedly failed Nigerians concerning the Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri refineries, despite over $3 billion poured into the project. It appears that Kyari and his associates lack any intent to repair the refineries, preferring to import substandard products and profit at the citizens’ expense,” the statement read.

CONDYAPIED alleged that importers and NNPCL insiders are thwarting President Tinubu’s reforms, manipulating fuel supply to cause price hikes and prolonged queues.

The coalition warned of impending protests in Abuja, vowing to occupy the NNPC towers until their demands are met.

The coalition also raised concerns over reports suggesting plans to convert the Port Harcourt refinery into a blending facility.

“We fear this conversion will expose Niger Delta communities to harmful pollutants and chemicals, worsening environmental degradation,” they stated, emphasizing their resolve to oppose any move to transform the refinery into a blending plant.

CONDYAPIED announced that it would not relent in its fight to protect the environmental and economic well-being of Niger Delta residents, urging swift action to restore the refinery’s intended purpose.

U.S. lawmakers react to release of Binance executive from Nigerian detention

U.S. lawmakers have reacted to the release of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, who had been detained in Nigeria since February 2024.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul and Representatives French Hill, Rich McCormick, and Tom McClintock expressed their relief following the release of Gambaryan.

In a joint statement, the lawmakers condemned Gambaryan’s “unjust detention” by Nigerian authorities, highlighting the multiple violations of his due process rights during his eight-month detainment.

“These included restricted access to legal counsel and U.S. consular assistance, along with inadequate healthcare that raised concerns about his well-being.

“While long overdue, we are extremely pleased that Tigran Gambaryan has finally been released from his unjust detention by the Government of Nigeria.

“During his detainment, Tigran was unfairly subjected to routine violations of his rights of due process, including restricted access to his counsel and U.S. consular support and inadequate healthcare.

“This treatment of an upstanding American citizen is wholly unacceptable. Our hearts go out to Tigran and his family, and we hope for an expeditious recovery from this shameful ordeal,” the statement read.

Gambaryan’s release follows months of efforts by U.S. lawmakers and international attention to his case.

South Korea warns it may send Ukraine weapons after North Korea sent troops to Russia

South Korea’s president vowed on Thursday to respond to North Korea’s deployment of troops to Russia, including by potentially supplying offensive weapons to Ukraine.

Seoul will not “sit idle” in the face of a North Korean “provocation that threatens global security beyond the Korean Peninsula and Europe,” South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol told reporters in Seoul, after a summit meeting with visiting Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Yoon’s remarks follow Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s assertion Wednesday that the United States has evidence of North Korea’s deployment of troops to Russia.

A TV screen shows an image of soldiers believed to be from North Korea stand in line to receive supplies from Russia during a news program at Seoul Railway Station in Seoul, South Korea, on Monday.

Austin did not specify what the evidence was, but said if North Korean troops were to fight for Russia, it would be a “very, very serious issue.”

South Korea’s intelligence chief told lawmakers Wednesday that North Korea has sent 3,000 troops, including special forces, to Russia for training, and that the North plans to increase that number to 10,000 by December.

The deployment of North Korean troops could add to concerns that the war risks spilling over and affecting tensions in Asia, from the Korean Peninsula to the Taiwan Strait.

South Korea’s intelligence agency said last week that North Korea had sent more than 13,000 containers of artillery, missiles and other conventional weapons to Russia since August 2023. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned earlier this month that North Korea is “no longer just about transferring weapons” but personnel too to help Russian forces.

President Yoon pledged support for additional South Korean weapons sales to Poland, including the sale of $7 billion worth of K2 tanks. So far, South Korea has helped Ukraine by providing arms to the United States and Ukraine’s neighbors, but he said that could change.

“We have had a principle of not directly supplying lethal weapons” to combatants, he told reporters, “but we can be more flexible and review the policy depending on North Korea’s military activities.”

Even if they do fight on the front lines, analysts believe North Korean troops will be relegated to a supporting role in the war.

Lee Ho-ryung, a researcher at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, a government think tank in Seoul, says North Korean troops could be sent to wear down Ukraine’s offensive into Russia’s Kursk region.

The North Koreans will likely be put “in charge of security and such at first. But as time goes by, and with training, they may be able to support Russian operations,” Lee says. “Then, it is expected that there will be many casualties during that process.”

South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun told lawmakers Thursday that North Korean troops “are assessed to be mere cannon fodder mercenaries.” North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, he added, “has sold his people’s army for an illegal war of aggression.”

North Korean state media have made no mention of deploying troops to Russia, and the South’s intelligence agency says North Korea may be sequestering family members of troops sent to Russia, possibly to quell domestic discontent at the deployment.

Even if the North Korean deployment has limited military value, analysts say it sends important messages to major powers.

Turkey strikes northern Iraq and Syria after attack kills 5 near Ankara

Turkish forces have launched airstrikes on suspected Kurdish militant targets in Syria and Iraq for a second day on Thursday, after Ankara said an attack on a state aerospace company in the capital killed five people.

The strikes targeted sites linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) — which is recognised as a terrorist group by the US, EU and others — or by a Syrian-Kurdish militia that is affiliated with the PKK

On Wednesday, Turkey’s air force carried out airstrikes against similar targets in northern Syria and northern Iraq, hours after government officials blamed the deadly attack on the headquarters of the aerospace and defence company TUSAS, on the PKK.

A large explosion in Ankara sent smoke billowing over the headquarters of one of Turkey’s most important arms companies. CCTV footage showed a man and a woman wielding automatic weapons as they opened fire on staff trying to flee. Ali Yerlikaya, Turkey’s interior minister, confirmed the pair were “neutralised.”

Turkey’s defense minister, Yasar Guler, said on Thursday that 47 alleged PKK targets were destroyed in Wednesday’s airstrikes — 29 in Iraq and 18 in Syria.

“Our noble nation should rest assured that we will continue with increasing determination our struggle to eliminate the evil forces that threaten the security and peace of our country and people until the last terrorist disappears from this geography,” Mr Guler said.

”I condemn this heinous terrorist attack and pray to God for mercy on our martyrs”, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said from Russia, where he was attending the BRICS summit and gave his thanks to President Vladimir Putin for his condolences.

On Thursday, large crowds gathered in the courtyard of a mosque in Ankara to take part in the funeral prayers for three of the victims, including Zahide Guclu — an engineer who was part of a TUSAS helicopter project. She was killed by the assailants after she had gone to the entrance of the complex to collect flowers sent by her husband.

TUSAS designs, manufactures and assembles civilian and military aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and various defence and space systems. The drones produced by the company also been used in the conflict,

The Ankara attack came at a fragile moment in the decades-long conflict between Turkey and the PKK – who seek autonomy in the southeast of the country – coinciding with renewed discussions about a possible ceasefire. On Tuesday, Devlet Bahceli, leader of the ultranationalist Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and a key ally in president Mr Erdogan’s coalition government, proposed a peace deal.

The deal would involve offering Abdullah Ocalan, the PKK’s imprisoned leader, a chance to reduce his life sentence in exchange for dismantling the PKK’s military wing.

Past peace efforts around a decade ago collapsed and led to a surge in violence, with strong opposition to any agreement from factions on both sides.

Ocalan, who was captured in 1999, is serving a life sentence on a prison island off Istanbul. In a related development, his nephew Omer Ocalan announced on the social platform X that on Wednesday family members were allowed to visit him for the first time since March 2020.

Omer Ocalan, an MP from Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party, also conveyed a message from Abdullah Ocalan, saying he was being kept in isolation and offering to work to end the conflict “if the conditions are right.”

“I have the theoretical and practical power to (transform) this process from one grounded in conflict and violence to one that is grounded on law and politics,” Omer Ocalan quoted his uncle as saying.

Qatar, US say Gaza ceasefire talks to resume in Doha

United States and Qatar have announced a resumption of negotiations on a Gaza ceasefire, as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said mediators are exploring new options after months of failure to seal a US-led plan.

With less than two weeks before US elections, Blinken is paying his 11th trip to the region since Israel launched its assault on Gaza, which killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar last week, following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Blinken said Thursday negotiators would resume talks “in the coming days” on ways to end the yearlong Gaza war and free dozens of captives seized by Palestinian armed groups in the October 7 attack.

“We talked about options to capitalise on this moment and next steps to move the process forward,” Blinken said, after talks with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.

He said that the two partners were seeking a plan “so that Israel can withdraw, so that Hamas cannot reconstitute, and so that the Palestinian people can rebuild their lives and rebuild their futures”.

“This is a moment to work to end this war, to make sure all the hostages are home, and to build a better future for people in Gaza,” he said.

The Qatari prime minister said Israeli and US delegations would meet in Doha to discuss a potential ceasefire.

Qatar and Egypt have acted as mediators between Israel and Hamas in months of talks that broke down in August without an agreement to end the war.

US President Joe Biden laid out a plan on May 31 that would temporarily halt fighting and seek the release of Israeli captives still held by Hamas in Gaza.

But talks became bogged down, with a major sticking point being Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s insistence on an Israeli troop presence on the Gaza-Egypt border.

remain committed to serving Nigeria, says ex-Minister Ohanenye after sack

Former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has reaffirmed her commitment to serving Nigeria and doing her best to contribute to its progress and prosperity.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Mrs Ohanenye was among five ministers fired by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.

She was replaced by the former minister of state police affairs, Imaan Suleiman.

In a letter of appreciation addressed to Mr Tinubu, the former minister thanked the president for the privilege to serve as Minister, describing it as an honour and privilege to have contributed to the nation’s development.

She also thanked the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, for support during stewardship at the women’s affairs ministry.

She said: “I write to express my sincere gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the extraordinary opportunity to serve as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It has been an honour and a privilege to contribute to the development of our nation.”

“I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for her invaluable guidance and support during my tenure as Minister of Women Affairs. Her kindness and encouragement have been instrumental to my success.

“To the people of Nigeria, I am deeply grateful for your unwavering support. Your trust and confidence in me have been a constant source of inspiration. I remain committed to serving my country and will continue to do my utmost to contribute to its progress and prosperity.”

“Stop blaming President Tinubu for economic hardship” – Ex-lawmaker tells Nigerians

Former House of Representatives member, Barrister Wumi Ogunlola, has defended President Bola Tinubu, stating that he cannot be blamed for the current economic hardships in Nigeria.

Speaking in Ado-Ekiti, Ogunlola stated that the country was already facing severe economic difficulties before Tinubu assumed office, likening Nigeria’s state to being in an “intensive care unit.”

Ogunlola attributed the socio-economic problems to mistakes made by past administrations and asserted that President Tinubu was working to rectify those issues through strategic reforms.

She expressed confidence in Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, urging Nigerians to give his administration more time to address the challenges, stating that the President was focused on long-term solutions.

She acknowledged that it would be impossible to fix all of the country’s issues overnight but assured that the country’s economic situation would improve in time under Tinubu’s leadership.

Her words: “It’s a pity that we find ourselves where we are, we don’t always think about the foundations of a thing, we only talk about the way we are building on it.

“All these things we are experiencing started from somewhere but we don’t always acquaint our mind to the fact that some people started this thing and we are the one bearing the brunt of it.

“It is because there are some people who have made some mistakes in the time past but I have listened to the President say, by the time he would finish his four years, if he has not done it well, they should vote against him.

“It is because he’s so sure of what he is doing and he knows the aftermath of what will come out of what he is doing.”
