Again, Evans makes case for plea bargain, claims he’s now a teacher

Convicted kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, also known as Evans, has again made a case for plea bargain, claiming that he is no longer a criminal.

In his plea bargain application which he put before Justice Sherifat Sonaike of the Lagos High Court, Tafawa Balewa Square, the convict said that he is now a teacher at the correctional centre, in Kirikiri after obtaining a teaching diploma certificate in economics from the Yewa College of Education.

He also said that he was prepared to surrender all his property to the Lagos State Government, including his 14 brand new trucks which could be sold with the proceeds transferred to the victims of his criminal activities.

This is the second time Evans has approached the court seeking a plea bargain on compassionate grounds.

On January 30, 2025, he made his first request before Justice Adenike Coker of the Lagos High Court, ikeja.

The convicted kidnapper had five criminal cases across various high courts in Lagos State. Two of these cases have already resulted in convictions, one of which carries a life sentence, while the other was for a 21 year prison term.

At the proceedings on Thursday before Justice Sherifat Sonaike, his lawyer, Etudo Emefo, told the court that the convict was remorseful and had undergone a transformation during his time at the Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre.

He pleaded with the Lagos State Government for mercy, explaining that without their forgiveness, the Federal Government’s scholarship granted to the convict would be rendered useless.

He said Evans, as a result of the scholarship, had earned a National Certificate Education in Economics and is now a teacher.

Copies of the NCE certificate and project work were also submitted before the court as appendices to the plea bargain application.

The prosecuting counsel, Alaba kuku, confirmed to the court that the state government had received the application and set up a committee to consider it.

Counsel representing Evans co-defendants also confirmed that they were all applying for a plea bargain even though the third defendant counsel said he was yet to submit his application to the state government.

Evans and his co-defendants, Joseph Emeka, Victor Aduba and Linus Opara, are standing trial on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, kidnapping and attempted murder before Justice Sonaike, who began the case afresh in January 2023, following the retirement of Justice Adedayo Akintoye.

Justice Sonaike has adjourned the case till April, 17, 2025, for a report on the plea bargain application or trial, if the plea bargain does not succeed.

Alleged internet fraud: Court gives EFCC 10 days to arraign 160 Chinese, Nigerians

Court...gravel and hammer

A Federal High Court in Abuja has given the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) 10 days to arraign no fewer than 160 suspects arrested over allegations bordering on internet fraud.

Justice James Omotosho gave the order following a fundamental rights enforcement suit and motion seeking for bail for some of the detained suspects filed by their counsel, Ishaka Dikko, SAN.

Dikko had, in the originating motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/80/2025, sued the Executive Chairman of EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, and the commission as 1st and 2nd respondents.

In the suit filed on Jan. 17, the senior lawyer listed Zhang Xiaowen, Liu Zhiwei, Chen Yeqiu, Lan Shunbin, who are Chinese nationals as 1st to 4th applicants.

Other suspects are Abubakar Hassan, Igwe Ozioma, Gabriel Shimlumun, Abdul

muminu Usman, Olamide Olatoye Jeremiah Abele, Asule James, Bitrus Joseph, Odeh Abel, Jathan Jayock, Jackson Samson, Isiaq Olanrewaju, Adejor Isah, Salihu Suleiman and Joseph Ojoma.

Others are Tanko Isah, Omoyele Ebenezer , Olisakwe Chieme, Ohikwo Fatima Musa, Faith Agada, Opara Cynthia, Blessing Thomas and Rachel Habila.

The counsel, in the four reliefs, sought a court declaration that the applicants were entitled to their fundamental right to dignity of human person, right to personal liberty and right to fair hearing.

These rights, he said, are enshrined in Sections 34, 35, 36, 43 and 46 of the 1999 (as amended).

He sought a declaration that the detention and/or the continuous detention of the suspects beyond the constitutional prescribed period for arrest or detention without an order of court from Jan. 9 to Jan. 16, and beyond was illegal, unlawful and contrary to the their fundamental rights.

He also sought a declaration that the confiscation of the applicants’ International Passport numbers: E55480652, EL6128848, E91567245 and E99903655 from Jan. 9 to Jan. 16 without any court order is unlawful and contravened particularly Sections 36, 43 and 44 of the 1999 Constitution.

Dikko, therefore, sought an order directing the respondents jointly and/or severally to pay the applicants damages in the sum of N5 billion for the illegal detention from Jan. 9 to Jan. 16, and beyond.

In the affidavit deposed to by Swarlat Dajong, a litigation secretary in the law firm of M.I. Dikko and Associates, she averred that the 1st to 4th applicants are Chinese nationals who were in Nigeria on a business visas.

She said while carrying out their business at Venus Spark Impact Media Ltd, the EFCC operatives raided the office at Plot No 288,, Mamman Kontagora Crescent at Katampe in Abuja.

Dajong said the four Chinese nationals were arrested and detained alongside the 5th to 160th applicants on Jan. 9 to Jan. 16, and beyond against the constitutional prescribed period for detention of suspects without court order.

According to her, the 5th to 160th applicants are Nigerian citizens and employees of Venus Spark Impact Media Ltd.

Dikko, also in a motion on notice dated Feb. 12 but filed Feb. 13, sought an order of court admitting 16 of the suspects, including the four Chinese nationals, who had been on detention since their arrest to bail.

The lawyer listed them as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 21st, 23rd and 87th applicants respectively.

In the affidavit in support of the motion equally deposed to by Dajong, she averred that the suspects had spent more than 48 hours in EFCC’s custody.

She said by the remand order of the court on Jan. 10 and Jan. 24 respectively which the EFCC attached to their counter affidavit, Dajong said the order expired on Jan. 31.

The litigation secretary said despite its expiration, the 16 suspects had been further kept in custody of the anti-graft agency since Feb. 1 till date, without any further order of any court or being charged before a court of competent jurisdiction for any criminal offence contrary to the provisions of the constitution.

She accused the commission of abusing the state apparatus, arguing that the EFCC ought to have concluded their investigation and taken necessary action.

She argued that the powers conferred! on EFCC to arrest and detain suspects did not extend to the detention of any suspect under the guise of investigation beyond the constitutional prescribed period for detention of suspects without an order of court.

Mr M.B. Baraya, who appeared for the EFCC, informed the court that the matter was adjourned for the hearing of the application for fundamental enforcement rights of the suspects.

Justice Omotosho queried the lawyer over the delay in arraigning the suspects.

“Why are you not arraigning them? I will give you seven days.

“I am going to make an order that you arraign them within seven days and if you don’t, I will grant them bail,” the judge said.

Responding, Baraya told the court that the agency’s investigating team were still in the matter.

Dikko, who disagreed with Bayara’s submission, said that his clients had been in detention for over two months.

However, a senior lawyer from the EFCC, who was in court on another matter, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, intervened in the matter.

Oyedepo said he was aware of their arrest and that their number was overwhelming.

He said the matter had also taken international dimension .

“Therefore, my lord, I am pleading for 14 days to do the needful,” he prayed.

Dikko clarified that a number of the suspects had been granted administrative bail, remaining the 16 applicants.

“I have condoned them for a while and everyone is here for justice,” Justice Omotosho said.

The judge stated that intelligence ought to have been gotten ready before arrest.

“We cannot just arrest and start investigation,” he added.

In a short ruling, Justice Omotosho consequently gave EFCC 10 day to arraign the suspects or release those in detention.

“I have carefully gone through the application before this court and in the interest of justice, I here ordered the prosecution to arraigned the defendants within 10 days, public holidays inclusive, or release them,” he declared.

The judge adjourned the matter until March 4 for hearing.

Anambra 2025: APC stakeholders purchase N50 million forms for popular billionaire

Stakeholders under the umbrella of the Anambra Coalition for Progressive Change on Wednesday purchased the N50 million Nomination and Expression of Interest forms for a leading governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo.

Okonkwo is seeking the APC governorship ticket to challenge Governor Chukwuma Soludo in the November 8, 2025 election.

The coalition, which includes lecturers, traders, activists, and professionals, picked up the forms at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.

Speaking after the official presentation of the forms, Chief Cyril Ezeani, the delegation’s leader, said Okonkwo is the right person to replace Soludo, citing security concerns and poor governance in the state.

His words: “Anambra is being ruled by people who don’t have business in governance. Soludo has not given us what we want, and security remains a major concern. That is why we believe Prof. Okonkwo is the right man to lead the state.”

Ezeani stated that Okonkwo is a long-time APC member, not just another politician looking to exploit governance for personal gain.

A senior lecturer at Veritas University, Dr. Christy Frederick, also endorsed Okonkwo, stressing the importance of women’s inclusion in leadership and calling him the solution to Anambra’s economic and security challenges.

“You must diagnose a problem before you treat it, and Okonkwo knows what Anambra needs. He has the technical expertise to lead,” Frederick said.

Reacting to the gesture, Okonkwo expressed gratitude and vowed not to betray the trust placed in him.

“I am encouraged. If there was any doubt before, your action today has erased it. With the APC ticket, I will deliver a landslide victory,” he stated.

Okonkwo, from Idemili North, added that he is confident of winning at least 15 out of 21 local government areas in the election.

Peter Obi’s ally, Valentine Ozigbo, joins APC

A former governorship aspirant of the Labour Party in Anambra State, Valentine Ozigbo, has joined the All Progressive Congress.

Ozigbo joined the APC on Thursday at his ward in Amesi area of the state, 24 hours after resigning from the LP.

Ozigbo, who is aspiring to contest the Anambra governorship election, on Wednesday, resigned his membership of the LP.

In a statement he personally signed, Ozigbo said his decision to quit the party is in line with his “unwavering commitment” to the greater vision for the state.

He added that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was duly informed of his decision as a mark of his deep respect for his leadership and the principles they have shared on this journey.

The politician asserted that he joined politics not for personal ambition but because he believe in the boundless potential of the people.

Ozigbo, an ally of Obi, also contested the state governorship election in 2021 under the Peoples Democratic Party and lost to Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.

The governorship election in Anambra has been fixed for November by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

More illegal structures to go in Abuja as FCTA threatens further demolition

By ABAH SUNDAY, Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), through its Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), has vowed to reclaim land illegally occupied at the Institution and Research District of Abuja.

The Director, Department of Development Control, Mr Mukthar Galadima, stated this during a stakeholders meeting with representatives of indigenous communities from Zhidu, Piwoyi, and Peace Villge in Abuja.

Galadima explained that the department was committed to carrying out enforcement with human face, hence, the decision to invite indigenous stakeholders from the 3 communities to inform them about the proposed removal of structures erected illegally in the district.

Speaking further, Galadima expressed concerns that the refusal of some illegal occupiers to vacate certain areas already allocated to a developer, had deprived a legitimate Estate Developer at Zhidu axis of the Institution and Research District, access to the land, after collecting compensation from the developers.

“We have received a lot of complaints from the original land allotees that has title documents. Some of them have been compensated by the Estate Developer, yet the people refused to vacate the land”.

Galadima, who pointed out that the FCT administration would not allow illegality to thrive, announced that the removal process will commence soon.

He warned that no one was permitted to erect any structure without a building plan approval from the Department of Development Control.

Earlier, Mr Osita, the District Officer, clarified that the demolition would exclude the structures of indigenous people, while those of non – indigenous citizens without building approval from the Department of Development Control will be demolished.

Meanwhile, some of the representatives of the communities were of the opinion that it was morally wrong for those who had received payments for compensation to remain in the area.

Also, the Majidadin Piwoyi, Mr Seth Nuhu, the Legal Adviser to Piwoyi Palace Council, Dr Sylvanus Gbendazhi and a resident, Mr Parisa Samuel explained that most of the structures currently being occupied by non- indigenous people in Piwoyi community were built by the natives for rent purposes in different locations of the village.

They also appealed to FCTA to desist from any form of enforcement that will cause tension to the residents and reallocate new lands to developers not occupied by natives.

The FCTA Development Control Director, Mr Galadima, and the three community representatives agreed that the area should be revisited for review, alongside the list of those that had been compensated, towards resolving the matter amicably.

Kwankwaso will emerge President in 2027 – NNPP

Kwankwaso

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has declared that it would become the ruling party in Nigeria come 2027.

NNPP national Chairman, Dr. Ajuki Ahmad, stated this at the National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting of the party in Abuja on Thursday.

According to him, the party’s leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, would emerge Nigeria’s President in 2027.

Despite the crisis rocking the NNPP, the national chairman said there is relative peace and stability in all the branches of the party.

“Our party, of course, is witnessing only a minute, but not unsurmountable challenge. Unlike other parties, whose challenges question their very existence, our colleagues, our challenges are negligible in the sense that those who elected to break away from us continue only to throw pebbles on our windows they lack the moral, political and legal basis to hurt us,” he said.

“I therefore call on our leaderships at all levels, national, state, local government and ward levels to please brace up and confront these challenges, particularly to ignore the recent chariot that claims to establish a parallel leadership in Apapa, Lagos, the questionable paper they have been brandishing like a weapon of mass destruction is nothing other than what it is a paper. We will soon tear that paper apart.

“Let us stand together as a party, move together as a party, act together in a as a unified whole, with one destiny.

“That is the destiny to become the ruling party come 2027 it is definitely going to be a tough journey, however, no journey is worthy and is worth undertaking if it is not tough, we are the nmpp.

“We embody the hopes and future of our youth, and we are poised to lift Nigeria out of his current state and build a nation of which all of us will be proud.”

Dangote donates N8bn to IBB Presidential Library, pledges N2bn annually until completion

The President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, has praised former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, popularly known as IBB, for implementing policies that liberated the private sector in Nigeria during his regime.

Dangote made this statement on Thursday during the unveiling of the book “A Journey in Service”, the autobiography of the former Head of State. The event also served as a fundraiser for the IBB Presidential Library.

Africa’s wealthiest man donated N8 billion to the IBB Presidential Library, to be paid at N2 billion annually over the four years allocated for the project’s completion. He further pledged that if the project extends beyond this timeframe, he would continue to donate N2 billion annually until it is finished.

Dangote, who is the largest employer of labour after the government, commended Babangida for his transformative policies that encouraged Nigerian investors to play prominent roles in the economy. He particularly highlighted the abolition of import licences, which helped stimulate domestic industries. These reforms, among others, ensured that Nigeria now has more private-sector involvement than any other country in Africa. This shift, he said, led to a contribution of 85% of the country’s GDP from the private sector, while the government contributes just 15%.

“Your Excellency, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for all you have done for Nigeria. Many may not realise that you were the architect of the private sector in Nigeria. Anyone in the private sector who has achieved prominence today owes it to you, as you provided us with the necessary licences. In the past, we used to struggle to obtain licences through intermediaries, including Indians,” he said.

Dangote recalled how Babangida’s policies facilitated the growth of Nigerian businesses, enabling them to thrive. “Your Excellency, in 1986, you abolished the requirements for import licences, and it was because of that decision that we were able to reach the highest levels of growth. I recall a day when you granted almost 30 of us banking licences. You also instructed five Nigerians to pay N1 million each for oil blocs.

“Your Excellency, I could continue to list all the reforms you introduced that liberated the private sector, which is why Nigeria has more private sector involvement than any other country in Africa. It is only in Nigeria where government contribution to GDP is a mere 15%, with the remainder being driven by the private sector,” he added while expressing hope that future Nigerian leaders will adopt similar policies for the betterment of the country. “I want to thank you once again, and I am confident that future leaders will continue to follow your example, working closely with the private sector.”

On his contribution to the IBB Presidential Library project, Dangote said, “Your Excellency, based on what I have observed, I believe this project will require at least four years to complete. I would like to contribute N2 billion each year for the next four years, amounting to N8 billion in total. Should the project extend beyond four years, I will continue to contribute N2 billion annually.”

Other prominent Nigerians also pledged contributions to the library’s construction. The Chief Launcher and Founder of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, donated N5 billion, while the co-Chief Launcher and Founder of the TY Danjuma Foundation, Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, donated N3 billion.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who chaired the event, remarked that by writing his memoir, Babangida had not only contributed to making history but also to documenting it. However, he cautioned the former military Head of State to expect varied reactions to the book, including good, bad, and ugly ones.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan also praised Babangida for the launch of his memoir and stated that Nigeria’s history would be incomplete without the story of the former Head of State.

The former military leader noted that while the annulment of the election remained a defining moment in his career, he took solace in the fact that former President Muhammadu Buhari posthumously honoured Abiola with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic title, a recognition reserved for Nigerian presidents.

Association seeks Act to abolish HND, bachelor degree dichotomy

The Association of Private Polytechnics in Nigeria has called on President Bola Tinubu to sponsor a Bill for an Act to abolish the dichotomy between Higher National Diploma (HND) and bachelor degrees.

Dr Benjamin Achiatar, president of the association, made the call during an interview with the our correspondent yesterday in Abuja.

The reports said that the dichotomy between HND and bachelor degree holder allows holders of the latter be given preferential treatment in government jobs over the former.

Achiatar said though the dichotomy had been officially removed by the National Council on Establishment, its implementation was very poor because according to him, it is not properly backed by law.

The Bill to back it up was passed at the 9th Senate but was not duly signed into law by the then president.

Therefore, a new Bill needs to be sponsored or the previous one revisited by the present 10th National Assembly and sent to President Bola Tinubu for his assent, he said.

Achiatar said due to the dichotomy, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) records showed yearly drastic reduction in numbers of applications into polytechnics.

Achiatar, who is the Proprietor of Gboko Polytechnic, stressed the importance of technical education in fast tracking the industralisation of any country.

We handle mostly technical trainings in Nigeria. In the polytechnics and monotechnics we have various courses; we train our students both in theory and practical.

The emphasis we place on practical trainings is what makes us different from the university, he said.

Achiatar said Nigerians needed to understand that technical and technological education was very important to the industralisation of Nigeria.

“We are requesting government to pay attention to all technology and technical education in Nigeria because in the last few years, interest in technical and technological education has been reducing”

He argued that the increasingly lower number of students applying to polytechnics and monotechnics in the country through JAMB was affecting the economy as a whole.

We are hoping that government will see this and give adequate attention to this area which will enable students to see the incentive to train in the field, he said.

He said the lack of incentives discourages students from taking up courses that lead to HND, adding that generally, government seem to be paying more attention to university education.

That is why we are requesting that government should sponsor a Bill in the National Assembly that will do away with the dichotomy, Achiatar said.

He noted that recently the Governing Councils (CCC) of Polytechnics emphasised the need for conversion of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) into a commission.

Achiatar said the association was in full support of the conversion.

He clarified that converting the NBTE being the regulatory body, into a commission, would also allow the NBTE to cater for the progressive needs of Nigeria’s polytechnics.

“It will have the capacity to work with the National Universities Commission (NUC), to do accreditation in Polytechnics for the award of B.Tech (Hons) which will attract more students”, Achiatar said.

Tinubu approves N758bn to clear 16 years pension arrears

TINUBU

President Bola Tinubu has approved a N758 billion bond to settle long standing pension liabilities under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) for federal workers across the country.

The historical decision which was approved during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Tuesday February 4, 2025, marked a watershed moment in Nigerias pension administration.

This is the first time the Federal Government is committing funds to the Pension Protection Fund, a statutory provision designed to augment pensions for low-income earners.

The fund has however been left unfunded since its inception in 2014.

PenCom urged all stakeholders to collaborate in expediting the bond issuance, to actualize the Presidents vision for pensioners.

MSME financial empowerment: Uzodimma is on mission to eradicate poverty in Imo -ISIPA D.G

The Director General, Imo State Investment Promotion Agency (ISIPA), Prof. Jude Nzeako, with other officials, in a group photograph with beneficiaries of the agency's financial empowerment for Micro business owners in Imo State, recently.

By Jude Onyenedogha

The Director General, Imo State Investment Promotion Agency (ISIPA), Prof. Jude Nzeako has enthused that Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma is on a mission to completely eradicate poverty in the state.

Nzeako made this assertion in his address during a financial empowerment for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in the state, held at the ISIPA office, Imo Trade and Investment/Ahiajoku Convention Center, New Owerri, recently.

“My mission, which is also the mission of the Governor, is to completely eradicate poverty in the state, a situation where every MSME will get the money they need to do business. We want to see a vibrant economy. That’s what the governor wants”.

He said the Governor’s elaborate policy and concern for the ordinary Imolites enabled his agency to reach out to “all people in all destinations and by that effort, we were able to have people give money for Imo MSME to be empowered.

The Director General, Imo State Investment Promotion Agency (ISIPA), Prof. Jude Nzeako, with other officials, in a group photograph with beneficiaries of the agency’s financial empowerment for Micro business owners in Imo State, recently.

Specifically, Prof. Nzeako disclosed that only N2 million, donated by St Peter’s Igbo Church USA was disbursed to 20 recipients, with each person receiving one hundred thousand Naira (N100,000), “just to test these people. We are going to work with these 20 people, to see how we can prepare them for the next three months”

He disclosed that there is still a lot in the pipeline, “being structured, being discussed. We started access to finance programme which we ran for the last thirteen (13) weeks. We have been holding webinars, trying to appeal to people all over the world to support MSME in Imo State”.

Prof. Nzeako said, as a result, they have other donors in cue who are monitoring and accessing the process and progress of the programme, disclosing that by March this year (2025), the agency will be organizing more elaborate financial empowerment, which will hopefully attract the presence of the governor.

The ISIPA D.G. made it clear that the first financial award was for the lowest of the traders, adding that the criteria was that the person must be in business, have a shop, so when they receive N100,000, it will make positive impact in their businesses, adding that a person must be registered with the agency to qualify to benefit.

According to Prof. Nzeako, the MSME in Imo State has suffered enough, as it is so difficult for them to access loans from banks, because of the high interest rate and other bottlenecks, reason for the move by the agency to source non or low interest loans for them.

Fielding questions from The Statesman during the programme, the Director General of Owerri Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (OCCIMA), Dr. Princewill Eronini promised that OCCIMA will collaborate with ISIPA in the areas of training and manpower development of the MSMEs, to equip them with the requisite knowledge, especially in the area of record keeping, to enable them succeed in business and be able to attract funding for their businesses.

He disclosed that he has gotten market for “our local products” in the United States of America, describing it as a good opportunity for Imo MSME, while promising to fine-tune it with ISIPA, so they can help those who have quality products (Igbo/Nigeria local foodstuffs) to export and market them in the USA.

Some of the beneficiaries who fielded questions from The Statesman during the event included; Comrade Ike Ikechi, Uchegbu Chioma, Olumma Ginikanwa, John Esther and Onuoha Nathaniel.

They appreciated ISIPA, Imo State Government and parishioners of St. Peter’s Igbo Church USA for remembering them, saying if such empowerment had been in existence previously, traders in the state would have been having sense of fulfilment, while the state’s economy would have improved tremendously.

Youths of Niger Delta Owerri Forum have cautioned the people of Owerri Senatorial Zone not to jeopardize their chances of producing governor of Imo State in 2027 with premature politics and unhealthy propaganda.

The youth warned the people of Owerri Zone to discard the spirit of discord and distrust in order to succeed in their mandate of clinching Douglas House in 2027.

This warning came amidst speculations that the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, may favor Owerri Zone to Produce His Successor in the 2027 Guber Elections.

Governor Uzodimma

The youth who spoke through the President – General of Owerri Zone Youth Niger Delta Forum (OZYNDF), Hon. Okereke Godson Bishop, on Wednesday, in Owerri, stated that if care is not taken, Owerri Zone may be manipulated and taken off balance by political foes of the zone.

Okereke

“Although, there are a lot of Political Leftists who we know are behind Uzodimma and Owerri Zone, believing that Equality and Justice are the beauties of democratic governance.

“Owerri Zone has been marginalized in Imo State politics. This political segregation of the Zone took toll on the Zone since 1999 and Niger Delta Youths are determined to ensure that the Zone’s collective ambition is realized by 2027”, he reiterated.

Okereke emphasized that Governor Hope Uzodimma is committed to deliver democracy goodies to the people of Imo State, hence any premature political ambition will be counterproductive.

Former French surgeon faces trial for raping 300 patients

A former surgeon is set to stand trial later this month for allegedly raping or sexually assaulting nearly 300 former patients most of them children, many unconscious over 25 years across western France.

The sheer scale and horror of the allegations against Joel Le Scouarnec, 74, means his four-month trial, due to start on February 24, will likely have an immense impact at home and abroad.

And it will have added resonance coming two months after Frenchman Dominique Pelicot was convicted of enlisting dozens of strangers to rape his heavily sedated then-wife Gisele Pelicot, a case that made her a feminist hero worldwide.

In this case, Le Scouarnec is the sole defendant accused of crimes against hundreds of victims.

The trial in the city of Vannes in Brittany will be held in public but seven days of testimony from victims who were targeted while minors will be behind closed doors.

Mr Le Scouarnec has generally acknowledged his involvement in many of the events in question as well as his concealment strategies, said regional prosecutor Stephane Kellenberger.

The average age of the victims is 11 but the former surgeon is also accused of raping a one-year-old and sexually assaulting a 70-year-old.

He allegedly committed sexual violence between 1989 and 2014 when he worked at a dozen medical institutions in western France.

Le Scouarnec is being tried for 111 rapes and 189 sexual assaults, aggravated by the fact that he abused his position as a doctor and mostly targeted children.

In total, 256 victims out of the 299 were younger than 15.

If convicted, Le Scouarnec faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison French law does not allow sentences to be added together even when there are multiple victims.

The former doctor is already in prison after being sentenced in December 2020 to 15 years for raping and sexually assaulting four children, including two of his nieces.

Many victims were traumatised when they learnt of the events, sometimes decades later. Not all of them will take part in the trial but many say they expect the proceedings to provide explanations.

The authorities began investigating Le Scouarnec in 2017 after a six-year-old girl who lived in the same neighbourhood in the southwestern town of Jonzac alleged he had raped her.

The initial inquiry uncovered the assaults on his nieces and a four-year-old patient all committed in the 1990s and he was handed 15 years in prison for these crimes in December 2020.

When investigators searched Le Scouarnecs house in Jonzac, where he lived as a recluse, they found dozens of dolls that he used as sex toys along with 300,000 pornographic images.

In another parallel with the trial of Dominique Pelicot who filmed the male visitors to the family home Le Scouarnec carefully wrote down the names of his victims, some of whom he abused on the operating table.

While Le Scouarnec is the sole defendant, the actions of officials will come under scrutiny at the trial.

It was only after the 2017 complaint and his being remanded in custody that Le Scouarnec was struck off the medical register.

He had been convicted at the end of 2005 for downloading child sexual abuse images. But the four-month suspended sentence he received was not accompanied by any obligation to receive treatment or a ban on practising.

Le Scouarnec then found work at a hospital in the Brittany town of Quimperle and even got promoted despite the management being made aware of his conviction.

He then moved to southwestern France, where he worked until his retirement in 2017.

A separate investigation has been opened by regional prosecutors for failure to prevent a crime or offence against the integrity of persons, though it is not yet targeting any individual or institution.

Childrens rights association La Voix de lEnfant (The Childs Voice), a civil party in the trial, filed a complaint in April 2023 against the judicial authorities and the ministry of health for endangering the lives of others.

Le Scouarnecs lawyer, Thibaut Kurzawa, told AFP that his state of mind has not changed.

He wants to defend himself and he wants to explain himself, he said.

He was married and had three sons born between 1980 and 1987. The couple separated in the early 2000s, but their divorce was not made official until 2023.

His wife, interviewed in 2019 in the regional Le Telegramme newspaper, insisted she never had any suspicions, even if she had caught him looking strangely at young neighbours.

Joel is possessed by the devil and I didnt suspect anything, she said.

Ogbulafor applauds Tinubu over establishment of SEDC, says he is a team player

From Henrietta Ashikodi, Umuahia

Prince Chidiebere Ogbulafor, son of late notable traditional ruler in Southeast, Eze J J Ogbulafor and brother to former PDP National chairman, Late Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the establishment of the South East Development Commission, SEDC, as he described the president as a team player.

Ogbulafor who was the former Mayor of Umuahia South LGA of Abia disclosed this to our reporter in Umuahia said the establishment of SEDC is a pointer that president Tinubu meant well for Ndigbo.

He hinted that the people of South East had struggled in the time past to have this “Development Commission” that would address the needs of the people all to no avail.

He however, expressed delight that SEDC came into fruition under the administration of president Tinubu, adding that it’s a win- win situation to the people of South East and they should be grateful to him.

“I doff my hat for the president for approving the establishment of SEDC, it is on record that his administration has been releasing more funds to states from the federation account, more than other previous administrations before him, and I know he is going to do more for our people, that is why I admire him so much because he Tinubu is somebody that plays inclusive politics”, Prince Ogbulafor stated.

The former Federal House of Representatives candidate of Ikwuano/Umuahia federal constituency under the banner of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN 2011 also commended his friend and brother, the deputy speaker, House of Representatives, Rt Hon Benjamin Okezie Kalu on his efforts in championing the establishment of the bill which later was passed into law and assented to by Mr President, adding it’s worthy of commendation too.

The young Ogbulafor who recently defected to All Progressive Congress APC, in Abia State upon coming back from United States of America noted that having sojourned to other political parties in the past, he felt satisfied with the programmes and policies of the ruling party at the centre, hence the decision to join APC in order to contribute his own quota towards the growth and development of the party.

He said,” I came from a political family, our late father was a great politician known the whole of then South East region during his life time who made tremendous inroads in political arena in early 1960’s and 1970’s and our late elder brother, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor followed suit and also contributed his own quota in the political spectrum as former National Chairman and National Secretary of PDP respectively.”

He hinted that because politics runs in the larger Ogbulafor family, he is also a notable politician, a former member of PDP at the formative years, joined APC at the inception before traveling back to USA, to assist his family nurtured their children to adolescence, and now have returned, and joined APC in order to add political value to the party with his wealth of experiences in politics.

Edo to petition EFCC as panel alleges N96bn fraud under Obaseki

EFCC

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over alleged financial mismanagement during the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

A report by an Administrative Panel of Enquiry claimed that N96bn was misappropriated during Obaseki’s tenure.

Okpebholo made this known on Friday while receiving the panel’s report, which was submitted to him in Benin City.

The findings were disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua.

The panel, constituted on December 18, 2024, investigated the financial dealings of the 18 impeached local government chairmen from September 4, 2023, to November 2024.

The report indicted not only the former chairmen but also alleged that prominent figures within the factional Peoples Democratic Party were complicit in the misappropriation of funds.

Governor Okpebholo commended the panel for its professionalism and emphasised that financial recklessness in public office would no longer be tolerated.

He stressed the need for accountability and transparency, assuring that those found culpable would face prosecution.

“The administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki took Edo people for granted. They looted resources meant for the people and diverted them for personal gains. We are determined to change this narrative and ensure justice is served”, Okpebholo stated.

“I will personally take this report to the EFCC to ensure those responsible are held accountable. The era of impunity is over.”

The chairman of the panel, Solomon Imohiosen, said forensic investigations uncovered significant financial irregularities, with N95.08bn received from the Joint Allocation Account Committee by the 18 local government councils during the period under review.

However, the report stated that there was little to show in terms of meaningful projects executed with the funds.

The panel further alleged that over N10.43bn was siphoned under the guise of Security, Environment, and Training, with the 18 local government chairmen contributing to a fund that was allegedly used as a conduit for misappropriation.

“Funds were also allegedly transferred from this account to individuals and private companies.

The report also implicated former ALGON Chairman, Oghomwen Ugiagbe, and other political figures, alleging that they used personal businesses, including hotels, to funnel public funds.

The panels investigation uncovered significant irregularities in the financial activities of the 18 local governments councils. The recommendations outlined in the report aim to address these issues and promote transparency and accountability in the local governments finances, the panel chairman said.

But reacting to the allegation, Obaseki’s Chief Press Secretary, Crusoe Osagie, dismissed the report as a politically motivated attempt to justify the unconstitutional removal of elected local government officials.

“Governor Okpebholo has no supervisory power over the local governments and cannot set up an investigation into their financial activities. If he believes there are infractions, he should refer the matter to the appropriate agencies rather than engaging in propaganda”, Osagie said.

He further accused Okpebholo of attempting to drag Obaseki into the controversy, insisting that the former governor never controlled local government funds during his tenure.

“Okpebholo should focus on governance rather than this his witch-hunt drive against his predecessors. Edo people should ignore these baseless allegations.

He said, ”We have read with disdain a statement by Monday Okpebholo alleging that the elected 18 local government chairmen in Edo State mismanaged N96bn, in another of Okpebholo’s frantic efforts to justify his unconstitutional onslaught on the elected leadership of the third tier of government.

“What is most shocking about the statement is that Okpebholo appears to be completely oblivious of the fact that he does not have supervisory responsibility over the local governments and can therefore not set up any investigation of government officials that are elected into office just like him.

“As a matter of fact, these local government chairmen have a better claim to their democratic office than he, whose election stands on a knife edge, with the election petition tribunal preparing to deliver justice in the September 21, 2024 election, widely believed to have been rigged.

“Also advertising Okpebholo’s ignorance is his attempt, as usual, to drag His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki into his propaganda. Okpebholo should kindly note that Obaseki was never obsessed with control of local government funds during his tenure, as Okpebholo has shown himself to be in the last three months.

“We are forced to, by this statement, inform Okpebholo that there are limits to his powers as governor, and if he believes there are financial infractions in a separate tier of government from his own, he should simply inform the relevant agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission to carry out their constitutional responsibilities. Okpebholo needs to be reminded that he is neither the Inspector General of Police nor the Chairman of the EFCC.

“We urge all Edo people and Nigerians to ignore the lies and falsehood propagated by Okpebholo in his statement and to rest assured that Obaseki, who is clearly the target of Okpebholo’s witch-hunt ran the most transparent government in the history of Edo State and had no authority over local government funds at any time during his 8 years in office.

Rivers court sentences man to death for killing mortuary owner

Court...gravel and hammer

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has sentenced a middle-aged man, Eze Kingsley to death for killing a mortuary owner, late David Wagbara.

Wagbara was stabbed to death by Kingsley who was a petroleum tanker conductor on December 7, 2018 in Rumuosi Community along the East-West Road in Obio/Akpor local government area of the state, following an argument.

The argument started when the deceased told the tanker driver to remove the vehicle from the entrance of his mortuary because it was obstructing his business.

Delivering judgement on the matter, the trial judge, Justice Omah Diepreye held that the prosecution was able to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt.

In a related development, a Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt and presided over by Chief Magistrate Rosemary Ibanibo has withdrawn from a case of attempted murder and cultism against one Dele Akpobari, popularly known as Bob Satan.

Akpobari is accused of being involved in the attempted murder of the leader of Conscience of Ogoni People (COOP), Gani Topba on March 12, 2023.

When the matter came up on Monday, Chief Magistrate Ibanibo sighted the charges filed by the Director of Public Prosecution (PDP) and said the Court lacked the jurisdiction to hear it.

She advised the suspect to seek bail at the state High Court, which has the proper jurisdiction to decide on the case.

Lagos Assembly crisis: 36 lawmakers pass vote of confidence on Meranda

Amid the leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly, lawmakers yesterday passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, Princess Mojisola Meranda, to continue to steer the affairs of the House.

The member representing Oshodi/Isolo 2, Oladipo Ajomale, who moved the motion, said that the Speaker has been elected by the lawmakers and that they are confident that she is capable of leading the House.

The motion was seconded by Aro Moshood after which the remaining 34 lawmakers, afterwards, passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.

It was earlier reported how operatives of the Department of State Security, DSS, and Nigeria Police Force took over the Assembly complex.

The operatives took over the Assembly complex at Alausa, Ikeja, to ensure adequate security during the plenary.

After the vote of confidence, the House adjourned sitting till further notice.

DSS, Police take over Lagos Assembly

The operatives of the Department of State Security, DSS, and the Nigeria Police, yesterday, took over the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The operatives took over the assembly at Alausa, Ikeja to ensure adequate security.

Mojisola Meranda, the Speaker of the house reportedly arrived around 12pm with her convoy.

Following her arrival, the House settled to plenary, as the lawmakers expressed confidence in her leadership.

The reports indicated the recently impeached speaker, Obasa, was removed from by 32 of the 40 members of the house on January 13, 2025 while he was in the United States.

Peace returns to Lagos Assembly after hours of tension

AFTER hours of tension that saw the sealing of key offices by security operatives, and a tense standoff involving the State Security Services (SSS) and other security operatives, calmness appeared to have returned to the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The crisis, which erupted yesterday, February 17, following Mudashiru Obasa’s removal on January 13 over allegations of abuse of office and corruption, plunged the Assembly into chaos.

According to reports, his ousting has sparked division within the states ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), with members of the influential Governors Advisory Council (GAC) split over the move.

Although there is an ongoing legal battle on the incident, the situation escalated on Monday when security operatives stormed the Assembly complex, sealing the offices of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the clerk

This led to clashes between security personnel and legislative workers. In a video shared and captured by newsmen, The ICIR observed how the lawmakers and the workers were initially denied access to the Assembly.

In another video, Meranda could be seen surrounded by lawmakers and supporters, as she shed tears while being hailed at the Assembly entrance.

However, reports indicated that normalcy is slowly returning to the House as the lawmakers were later allowed to hold a session.

During the session, the lawmakers passed a vote of confidence on Meranda.

Meanwhile, the Lagos lawmakers, while condemning the invasion of the Assembly complex by operatives of the SSS and the police, described the action as a rape of democracy, an aberration, and a national embarrassment.

The legislators, during a plenary session, demanded an explanation from the Lagos State Director of SSS regarding the reasons behind the security operatives presence at the legislative complex.

They also urged the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to investigate the incident and publicly disclose the findings.

This was as the Assembly urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the incident to prevent further escalation of the situation.

The lawmakers further denounced the invasion, describing it as a violation of legislative norms and a direct assault on democratic governance in the state.

“This is not a government ruled by the barrel of a gun. This is an aberration of democracy and a step toward anarchy.

“What happened today is a total embarrassment and an act of harassment, said Abiodun Tobun, one of the lawmakers.”

He further declared the lawmakers loyalty to Meranda, stating, “Nobody can dictate to us. God chooses and removes leaders. We are solidly behind your leadership, Mr. Speaker nobody can remove you.”

On January 13, Obasa who had served for nearly 10 years as the state Speaker from June 2015 to January 2025, was suspended by more than two-thirds of the 40-member lawmakers over alleged misconduct and sundry offences.

However, during a welcome rally at his residence in GRA, Ikeja held on Saturday, January 25, Obasa declared that he remained the Speaker despite his replacement by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda.

He filed a suit against the Assembly and the new Speaker at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, arguing that his suspension was improper since the Assembly was in recess at the time he was removed.

You’re no longer members of Rivers Assembly, Fubara’s aide tells Amaewhule, 26 others …Insists Ex-lawmakers No Longer Members Of Rivers Assembly

Rivers state government has once again called on the embattled former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Martins Amaewhule and 26 others to stop misleading the public on their status as members of the House because they had since lost their seats.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Warisenibo Joe Johnson in a statement in Port Harcourt yesterday warned the public to ignore Lawmakers from the National Assembly who met in Abuja to give their support to the 27 former lawmakers.

Johnson said in a statement released by ex-lawmakers led by Hon Martin Amaewhule, the group claims that their defection never took place.

He said “it is unfortunate that these dishonest characters had in 2023 found themselves into the House of Assembly of Rivers State as lawmakers. Happily, by their own voluntary defection on the floor of the House on 11th December 2023, they got themselves out of the House.”

The Commissioner recalled that the true position regarding the applicability of the judgment of His Lordship, Hon Justice James Omotosho in the case of Rivers State House of Assembly V The National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (suit no: FHC/ABJ/CS/1613/2023), said the judgment did not touch nor alter the status of Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule and his group of 27 as ex-members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State.

Rt. Hon Martin Amaewhule and 26 others had lost their seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly following their voluntary defection/cross-carpeting which happened on the floor of the House of Assembly in the full glare of the public on 11th December 2023.

Johnson however called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Judicial Council and the Inspector general of Police to ignore the deliberate misrepresentation of facts and the effect of the judgment of Justice Omotosho on the matter.

We therefore call on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the National Judicial Council, the Chief Justice of the Federation, the Inspector General of Police, all institutions in Nigeria, as well as well-meaning Nigerians to ignore the mischievous and deliberate misrepresentation of the facts and the effect of the judgment of Hon Justice Omotosho on the situation in Rivers State by Hon Amaewhule and co.

2027: We’ve Never Zoned Presidency to S/East —Labour Party

The leadership of Labour Party said it has never zoned its presidential ticket to the South-East.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Obiora Ifoh, stated this in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday.

The reports indicated that Ifoh was reacting to a report making the rounds that the party had zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South-East.

The national publicity secretary maintained that the party had not and would not zone any of its positions to any geographical zone or individual.

Ifoh clarified a statement credited to the party’s National Chairman, stating that he (Abure) was quoted out of context.

He said that Abure’s statement issued on Sunday, entitled: 2027: Labour Party still available for Ndigbo to realise presidency;  Abure, was not alluding to the party zoning its 2027 ticket to the South-East zone.

Ifoh said that the national chairman only advised some Southeast members at a gathering that Ndigbo could still achieve the presidency if they were more united and able to reach out to other groups.

He also stated that Abure was trying to say that the labour Party was a veritable platform for the aspirations of the Ndigbo.

“Labour Party is a national party and has large followership across the country and, therefore, the issue of zoning does not arise.

“In the 2023 general elections, the party won seats in the North and across the Southern states, and we are working hard to surpass that achievement in future elections. Candidates for every position must emerge through highly-competitive and democratic processes, as the party’s constitution does not permit zoning.

“We, therefore, regret the misinterpretation of the party’s noble intention by a section of the media. Our party was quoted out of context”, he said.

The national publicity secretary, however, said that they were excited by the deluge of concerns raised by the public over the misinformation.

“It clearly shows the level of love and trust Nigerians have for the Labour Party and how far they are willing to support it in the task of repositioning Nigeria and ensuring that the democracy works again in our dear country”, he said.

Ifoh urged Nigerians to continue to have faith in the party and to support it for the huge task ahead.

“We will not fail you. Together, we shall overcome”, he said

We’re wooing you —Wabara asks Otti to dump LP, join PDP

Embattled Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, BoT, Adolphus Wabara, has revealed plans to woo Governor Alex Otti of Abia State to join the party.

Wabara said Otti’s developmental strides was evidence-based, and devoid of party politics, adding that PDP would love the governor to return back to its fold.

He disclosed this yesterday at the International Conference Centre, ICC Umuahia, the Abia State Capital.

Wabara said Otti and his counterpart from Enugu State, Peter Mbah have been very outstanding in the entire South East.

He said: “Politics ends after campaigns and elections, then governance begins. Even a blind man can see what is happening in Abia.

“Governor, continue to do well. Our ancestors in Abia are with you, and I want to believe that you are on constant touch with them for guidance. Every Abian is happy with you.

“I came from Enugu two days ago and I saw the massive development by Governor Peter Mbah of the PDP. Even APC people are confessing that you and your colleague, Peter Mbah are pace setters.

”I have never mentioned your party the Labour Party. I have always said Gov Alex Otti is doing well. Nobody knows where he will swing in 2027. So, when these characters ( Wabara’s critics) are doing this and that, let them know I’m talking about Alex Otti. We are all wooing him. Governor, we are all wooing you.”

This is coming at a time the former Senate President was engrossed in a crisis with PDP.

It would be recalled that the PDP Abia State Working Committee, SWC, had suspended Wabara BoT Chairman.

But, the party’s National Working Committee, NWC, had nullified Wabara’s suspension.

PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the purported suspension violated the party’s Constitution (as amended in 2017) and does not follow due process.

North will rally behind Tinubu in 2027 —Defence Minister

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has dismissed recent comments by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal regarding President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election prospects, insisting that the North remains firm behind the president.

In a statement released yesterday in Abuja, Matawalle described Lawal’s statement as an attempt to create division.

He emphasized that President Tinubu has made significant strides in governance, particularly in security, infrastructure, and economic reforms.

“The North remains steadfast in its support for President Tinubu”, Matawalle said.

“Any insinuation to the contrary is a deliberate attempt to sow discord and undermine our national unity”

Highlighting some achievements of the Tinubu administration, the minister noted that “security forces had neutralized over 8,000 terrorists and bandits, apprehended 11,600 criminals, and recovered more than 10,000 weapons in 2024 alone”

“Additionally, the successful rescue of approximately 8,000 kidnap victims shows governments commitment to protecting all citizens.

“On economic development, Matawalle stressed that Tinubu’s administration had prioritized infrastructure projects critical to the North’s progress, including road construction and transportation network improvements.

He also highlighted the governments push for local government autonomy, which he said had strengthened governance at the grassroots level.

He urged critics to assess Tinubu’s scorecard objectively rather than dismissing his efforts.

“We must unite in our support for Mr. President as he continues to work towards a prosperous and secure Nigeria. Our support for President Tinubu is unshakeable. We stand firmly behind his vision for a better Nigeria.”

NELFUND; South East remains lowest in application –Okafor …Otti calls for sensitization

Gov Otti and Director, Regional Advocacy, National Education Loan Funds,(NELFUND) Engr. Nneamaka Okafor

From Henrietta Ashikodi, Umuahia

The Director, Regional Advocacy, National Education Loan Funds,(NELFUND) Engr. Nneamaka Okafor has revealed that South East has the lowest list of students that have applied for the loan, meant for Nigerian students in institutions of higher learning.

Nneamaka Okafor made the call when she visited the governor of Abia state, Dr Alex Otti.

She said she came to seek partnership with the State government in sensitizing the people about the students’ loan, adding that the South East has the lowest list of those that have been applying for it.

She reiterated that the opportunity for accessing the students’ loan started in April 2024, noting that the loan is for students in government institutions of higher learning such as university, polytechnic and college of education.

She further made it public that the loan which is interest -free is expected to be paid back within 10 years starting from two years after the beneficiary would have completed his youth service.

Engr Okafor appreciated the giant strides of the Governor in various sectors of the economy and described him as one who has performed miracle in Abia state, she requested for a space for an office accommodation.

Gov Otti and Director, Regional Advocacy, National Education Loan Funds,(NELFUND) Engr. Nneamaka Okafor

Responding, Governor, Otti appreciated her visit and call for adequate sensitization on the merit of NELFUND for Nigerian students in institutions of higher learning.

He said that if the people are well – informed about the programme they would likely participate in the programme and access the students’ loan to enable them pursue their academic dreams.

Otti stated that an average Igbo man has an attitude towards loan, hence, the need for the advocacy.

“You see our people have this attitude towards loan except if they’ve tried everything. Because once you are owing, even the business people when they borrow they want to pay back.

“This is where advocacy comes in. I am not too sure that our people know that it is interest – free, may be they know, but their attitude towards borrowing still has something to do with it. I think we need to sensitize them.

“Maybe we need to do a little bit more because this is a very good initiative particularly for students who are from indigent homes.

“So, I am sure that if our people understand clearly that nobody would be chasing them to pay back the loan when they have no means of livelihood.

“So, we need to do a whole lot more in Abia State University, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike even though it is a federal university”. The governor reiterated.

The Governor charged the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Emeh Uche to take it upon herself to push the advocacy aggressively across the tertiary institutions in the State.

He assured the Director Regional Advocacy, National Education Loan Funds that Abia State is ready to assist in the area of providing space for the agency as well as provide every other necessary logistics for the smooth operation of the office.

Otti used the opportunity to inform the gathering that since the introduction of free education at primary and secondary school levels in the State, there has been an upsurge in the schools in terms of enrollments and the policy is working effectively.

“Since we started in January this year, there has been an upsurge in registration.Initially we were thinking we will have to enforce it. So, we said, if you are of school age and we see you hawking banana and groundnut, we will arrest you and exchange you with your parents.

“What we found is that schools are busting and there is nobody to arrest, people want to go to school ,” the Chief executive noted.

Among those present are, Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Professor Uche Emeh Uche, the of Rector Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic Aba, Dr. Christopher Okoro were among top government officials present at the visit.

Akpabio, Ooni, Ohanaeze, others extol late Adebanjo

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, have expressed condolences over the passage of a leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Pa Ayodele Adebanjo.

Also, former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and the Middle Belt Forum, mourned Adebanjo’s death in separate statements.

They all described Adebanjo as an advocate of true federalism, justice, and equity who fought relentlessly for Nigeria’s unity and democratic survival.

Adebanjo died at the age of 96 at his Lekki Lagos State residence on Friday.

In a condolence message issued in Abuja on Saturday, Akpabio described Adebanjo’s demise as the end of an era.

He said the late elder statesman was a selfless patriot who dedicated his life to fighting for truth, equity, and justice in the country

Akpabio said, Adebanjo’s unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and equity has left an indelible mark on our nations history.

Mbah, in a post on his verified X handle, @PNMbah, described the late nonogenerian as a courageous and principled leader.

He said, He was a forthright, courageous, and principled leader, who spoke the truth without fear or favour. Always at the vanguard of equity and justice, Pa Adebanjo stoutly defended what he believed to be true, right, and just.

He was a soldier of democracy. Whether it was in the days of Pa Obafemi Awolowo or during the military era and the struggle for democracy under the auspices of the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, he was fearless in the trenches, fighting for democracy and the blessings it promises.

Ooni Ogunwusi, in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Moses Olafare, in Osogbo on Saturday, said Adebanjo was more than a political figure.

The royal father also said the deceased was a guardian of Yoruba ideals, a relentless advocate for fairness, equity, and the true federalism upon which Nigeria was envisioned.

The statement partly read, “Pa Ayo Adebanjo was more than a political figure; he was a guardian of Yoruba ideals, a relentless advocate for fairness, equity, and the true federalism upon which Nigeria was envisioned.

“He lived and fought for democracy, justice, and the welfare of the common man, standing tall even in the face of opposition”

Describing Adebanjo as an icon of Nigeria’s democratic struggle, an advocate of justice, and a pillar of progressive politics, Fayemi said the late Afenifere leader was a true icon of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

Fayemi said, “He was an unwavering advocate of justice, and a pillar of progressive politics in Nigeria. Baba was more than a political leader; he was a moral compass who never wavered in his convictions.

“As a committed nationalist and a leading voice in Afenifere, he stood for fairness, justice, and the restructuring of Nigeria to ensure a more equitable society. His principled courage, wisdom, and steadfastness in speaking truth to power made him an enduring figure in our national political landscape”

Similarly, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in a condolence message signed by its President-General, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, on Saturday, described Adebanjo as a detribalised Nigerian, outstanding elder statesman, distinguished patriot, nationalist, bridge builder, and foremost leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere.

The pro-Igbo socio-cultural group said Adebanjos exit had engendered deep pain, grief, and mourning among his family, loved ones, and numerous admirers.

Ohanaeze said, “Ndigbo, Nigerians, and posterity at large will forever cherish Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s enduring legacies and undoubted commitment to truth and social justice.

“His initiatives and robust contributions in the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, a body in which he was a founding member and which he equally utilized in his advocacy for fairness and good governance, will remain evergreen in our individual and collective memories.”

The Igbo group said its chieftains saw Adebanjo as a caring bosom friend, beloved brother, a father, and a staunch ally for the unity and oneness of Nigeria, where justice, fairness, and equity are paramount.

“As we mourn the sorrowful exit of this archetype of integrity and good conscience, Pa Ayodele Adebanjo, we pray that God Almighty may grant your entire family the courage to bear this irreversible departure. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace!”, Ohanaeze added.

NANS protests exclusion from NELFUND board

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has protested its exclusion from the Board of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

This was stated in a letter dated February 13, 2025, addressed to the managing director of the fund, Akintunde Sawyerr, and the chairman of the board, Jim Ovia, by NANS president, Lucky Emonefe.

In the letter, which was released to journalists in Abuja on Saturday, Mr Emonefe described the continued exclusion of students as completely unacceptable.

He demanded the immediate inclusion of a student representative in the forthcoming board meeting, threatening to shut down the venue if this was not done.

The letter, referenced as NANS/VOL1/GA1/A254, was titled: Final Demand for Student Representation in the Scheduled NELFUND Board.

According to Mr Emonefe, excluding students from the NELFUND board is akin to shaving a mans head in his absence.

“We are writing to express our deep concern and outright discontent over the exclusion of students from the scheduled board meeting of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.

“The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), as the apex student body representing over 50 million students across the country, will not stand idly by while critical decisions affecting our future are made in our absence.

“As the primary stakeholders and direct beneficiaries of NELFUND, it is completely unacceptable that students are sidelined from deliberations that shape the administration and disbursement of student loans.

“This fund was created for Nigerian students, and we will have a voice in how it is managed.

“We are demanding, not requesting, the immediate inclusion of a student representative in this board meeting.

“Failure to accommodate this legitimate and reasonable demand will result in the total shutdown of the meeting venue by Nigerian students”, he said.

He further stated that NANS would mobilise en masse to ensure that no meeting takes place unless student representation is secured.

“It will be recalled that President Bola Tinubu, in April 2024, assented to the student loans (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-enactment) Act, 2024.

“The Act provides for board members drawn from relevant ministries, regulatory bodies, and participating agencies.

“These include the federal ministries of finance and education, Federal Inland Revenue Service, National Identity Management Commission, National Universities Commission, representatives of tertiary institution students, the organised private sector, and others.

“NANS leadership should participate in the meeting that affects students directly.”

SERAP to CBN: Reverse ATM charge hike in 48 hours or face legal action

SERAP

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has issued a 48 hours ultimatum to the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to reverse the newly announced hike in Automated Teller Machine, ATM, transaction fees, calling it unlawful, unfair, unreasonable, and unjust.

SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, in an open letter dated February 15, 2025, urged CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso to immediately reverse the policy.

According to SERAP, the development would worsen the financial hardship faced by Nigerians, particularly low-income earners.

The letter titled, SERAP gives CBN 48 hours to withdraw unlawful, unfair hike in ATM transaction, observed that the increase contradicts Section 42(1)(a) of the CBN Act 2007, which mandates the apex bank to ensure adequate and reasonable financial services for the public in the national interest.

The letter also cited Section 1(c)(d) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018, which seeks to protect and promote the interests and welfare of consumers and prohibits restrictive or unfair business practices.

According to the letter, the increase in ATM transaction fees will hit the hardest those at the bottom of the economy and exacerbate the growing poverty in the country.

According to the letter, CBN policies should not be skewed against poor Nigerians and in favour of banks that continue to declare trillions of naira in profits at the expense of their customers.

SERAP noted that imposing exorbitant fees at a time when many Nigerians are struggling economically is unfair, unreasonable, and unjust, warning that the policy creates a two-tiered financial system, discriminating against economically vulnerable citizens who may not afford the extra charges.

The increase in fees, according to SERAP contradicted the Tinubu administrations commitment to addressing poverty.

The rights group stressed that the CBN is failing to comply with the Nigerian Constitution, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, and international human rights obligations.

SERAP, therefore, demanded that the CBN reverse the decision within 48 hours of the receipt and/or publication of its letter, failing which it will take legal action.

According to SERAP, If we have not heard from you by then, we shall take all appropriate legal actions to compel you and the CBN to comply in the public interest.

CBN in a circular dated February 10 announced that ATM withdrawals made at machines outside a banks branch premises will now attract a N100 charge per N20,000 withdrawn, while withdrawals at shopping centres, airports and stand-alone cash points will carry an additional surcharge of up to N500 per N20,000 withdrawal.

The directive takes effect March 1, 2025.

Newborn baby found dead in abandoned carton

Residents of Tudun Murtala Tagarji community in Kano State woke up to a distressing discovery of a newborn baby abandoned in a carton near the Kaura drainage.

According to Commander Sulaiman Rabiu, leader of the Operation Zaman Lafiya vigilante group, his team came across the heartbreaking scene during a routine patrol around 2 a.m. on Saturday.

“Yesterday around 2 a.m., while we were out on patrol, we came across a shocking incident inside a pit very close to us. Upon close observation, we noticed a disposed carton, but we had no idea what was inside it”, he recounted.

Determined to investigate, the team proceeded with caution.

“In order to clear our doubt and be sure nothing harmful was kept there, I instructed my boys to open the carton, and behold, upon opening it, we saw a baby already dead”, Sulaiman revealed.

Following the discovery, the vigilantes took the baby to their office and informed the community leadership.

“By morning, we invited the ward head to come and see for himself, along with other members of the community, before conveying the baby to the police station and informing them”, he explained.

The police later directed them to a hospital for medical examination, where doctors confirmed the baby was dead.

“We came back home and organized burial rites for the baby in accordance with Islamic teachings”, Sulaiman stated.

Commander Sulaiman urged vigilante groups to remain vigilant in safeguarding their communities and called on parents to guide their children, particularly young women, to avoid circumstances leading to unwanted pregnancies.

Unwanted pregnancy goes against Islamic teachings, and parents should monitor their children’s movements, with guidance from traditional leaders,

he advised.

Panel indicts ex-Gov Obaseki, LG chairmen, PDP leaders for alleged mismanage of N96bn Council fund

The administrative panel of inquiry set up by the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo to investigate the financial accounts of the impeached 18 Local Government Chairmen in the state between September 4, 2023 and November, 2024 has allegedly indicted the immediate past Governor of the State, Godwin Obaseki.

The reports said that a statement made available to newsmen yesterday by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor also allegedly indicted some local government chairmen, leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, among others.

The chairman of the panel, Solomon Imohiosen while submitting the report to Governor Monday Okpebholo, alleged that they were indicted for either mismanaging and/or diverting to private accounts, the sum of N95,080,676,687.86, being amount received from the Joint Allocation Account Committee, JAAC, by the 18 Local Government Area Chairmen for the period under review.

Imohiosen listed some of the indicted persons to include the embattled chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government, Newman Ugiagbe who is also the State chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON.

Others are Ahonsi Ogiegbaen Osifo, Eric Agbonmwanre, Abraham Burma and Dickson Imasogie Notiemwenmwan.

He alleged that the ALGON chairman used his hotel, the Demarriots Hotels Limited in collusion with others to loot Local Government funds.

He further alleged that findings and forensic investigations uncovered that the N96 billion was either mismanaged and/or diverted to private accounts.

According to him, the panel observed that N95,080,676,687.86 was received from the Joint Allocation Account Committee, JAAC, by the 18 Local Government Area Chairmen for the period under investigation. However, the funds were not judiciously utilized as no meaningful projects were on the ground to justify the amount received.

The panel established a case of fraudulent diversion of Local Government funds to political godfathers in the state. It was discovered that over N10,433 658,452.00 billion was fraudulently siphoned, using the pseudo name, Security, Environment and Training.

The 18 Local Government Area Chairmen contributed the amount to the account, using it as a conduit pipe to drain government resources, as monies were transferred from there to various individuals and companies.

The panels investigation uncovered significant irregularities in the financial activities of the 18 Local Governments Councils. The recommendations outlined in the report aim to address these issues and promote transparency and accountability in the Local Governments finances.

The report indicted former ALGON chairman, Oghomwen Newman Ugiagbe, who used his hotel, Demarriots Hotels Limited, Ahonsi Ogiegbaen Osifo, Eric Agbonmwanre, Abraham Burma and Dickson Imasogie Notiemwenmwan to loot Local Government funds, he alleged.

Imohiosen, however, noted that the panel faced different challenges during the course of the assignment, which included late submission of financial records by various Local Government Councils, incomplete submission of records.

Other challenges, he listed are deliberate obstruction of the investigation by Council personnel who failed to comply on time, but brought hefty sacks as an after-thought to dazzle panel members.

In his remarks after receiving the committees report, Governor Okpebholo vowed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, would prosecute those indicted for allegedly looting the Local Government treasuries, running into over N95 billion.

Okpebholo, who said, he would personally petition the EFCC on the findings of the report for immediate prosecution, assured that he would go after those indicted to retrieve what they have stolen from the people of Edo State.

I want to thank you for a job well done. I carefully listened to the submission of the report. The truth is that the administration of former governor Godwin Obaseki took Edo people for granted. They took everything belonging to Edo people and channeled it for their personal gains.

We thank God for helping us to change the narrative to benefit Edo people. We also thank the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, because without his support, we will not be witnessing the kind of development we are experiencing in Edo today.

A lot has happened. The Peoples Democratic Party looted the treasury of the Local Governments and stole our collective patrimony, and nobody went after them or took action. This time, things are different. We will go after them and retrieve what they have stolen from Edo people.

They will be made to pay for it. I will personally take this document to the EFCC and ensure that justice is done for this wrong done to Edo people.

Besides the impeached Local Government Chairmen who were indicted by the report, former governor Godwin Obaseki, leaders of the factional Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), among others, were also fingered.

The days of financial recklessness and lack of transparency in public office were long over, as Nigerians need to start demanding accountability from elected public office holders. This is the only way to fight corruption and ensure development, he said.

DAILY POST recalls that Governor Okpebholo had on December 18, 2024 set up the Administrative Panel of Enquiry to investigate the financial dealings of the impeached 18 Local Government Chairmen in Edo State.
