The Anambra State Police Command has arrested Christian Ndubuisi in connection with the fatal stabbing of his elder brother during an altercation.
The incident, described by the state Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, as tragic and unfortunate, has sparked renewed calls for peaceful conflict resolution within communities.
In a statement released yesterday, police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that Ndubuisi was apprehended on Saturday by police operatives attached to the 3-3 Divisional Headquarters, following a report of the incident.
Ikenga outlined the details of the crime, stating, “On February 15, 2025, operatives acted swiftly on a report and arrested Christian Ndubuisi, who allegedly killed his elder brother over a minor disagreement”
He explained that during the fight, the suspect broke a bottle and used it to stab his brother.
When rushed to the hospital, the victim was confirmed dead by a doctor on duty.
The Commissioner of Police expressed his condolences, describing the situation as a tragic reminder of the need for conflict resolution and anger management.
“It is very tragic to hear that a minor disagreement escalated into a violent confrontation, resulting in the loss of life”, CP Orutugu remarked.
He assured all that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further investigation, with a commitment to ensuring justice is served.
Detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has announced that he wont, both now and ever, face any trial conducted by any judge or court without jurisdiction or whose jurisdiction does not pass constitutional muster.
He said “this decision would stand even if it will take the rest of my life in detention to produce me before a proper and impartial court, so be it”
Kanu, who has been facing trial since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021, announced this in his Open Letter to the General Public, dated February 14, 2025, which was sent to newsmen by the head of his legal team, Aloy Ejimakor.
He stated, ”On September 24, 2024, I decided that I have had enough of taking my chances at getting justice from a judge that, in June 2021, sent me to secret police detention without fair hearing, later refused to transfer me to prison to better prepare for my trial, and capped it all by refusing to restore my bail. Instead, she ordered an accelerated trial in the face of the reality that I will never get a fair trial whilst detained at the DSS.
“These are the major reasons that compelled me to request the recusal of the judge, and having consented to it, she proceeded to make an order removing herself from my case. That order has never been challenged on appeal; thus, it remains extant to this day. But instead of the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court doing the lawful thing by assigning my case to another judge, he connived with the federal government to eat crow and send my case to a judge that stands recused by a valid order”
Kanu, who concluded this Open Letter by making it clear that it should in no way be construed to mean that there are no decent judges in Nigeria who can be trusted to deliver even-handed justice in his case, stated that this is not the issue.
He added, “Instead, the issue is that my case is deliberately being shielded from judges and justices that are deemed to be committed to doing justice even when it means that the federal government must lose”
According to Kanu, he has been compelled by the events of the past few days to take the unusual step of writing this Open Letter for the singular purpose of calling the attention of the general public to the serial executive and judicial fraud being perpetrated against him since his extraordinary rendition in 2021. The details are as follows: In a judgement entered on March 1, 2017, the Federal High Court in Abujaruled that IPOB is not an unlawful group. At the time, this ruling received widespread publicity.
He said, “This landmark ruling (made by the court before it turned unjust) emanated in a criminal proceeding that required proof beyond reasonable doubt, in which the federal government and I presented our respective cases. The federal government did not go on appeal as the law mandated (if they were dissatisfied with the judgment). This abominable incident was the earliest sign yet that the government and its judiciary have struck an unholy and fraudulent alliance to deny me my rights and thereby imperil the lives and liberty of millions who identify with IPOB”
He stated that on October 26, 2022, a Federal High Court declared his extraordinary rendition and detention unconstitutional, stating that his manner of arrest and detention in Kenya, his continued detention in Abuja, his subjection to physical and mental trauma by the respondents, and the inhuman and degrading treatment meted out to him amounted to a brazen violation of his fundamental right to dignity of person and a threat to life under Section 34(1)(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
Recalling that the court further ordered the federal government to apologize to him and pay compensation, Kanu argued that this judgment is sufficient to have ended my lengthy detention and encouraged the federal government to constructively engage me on the issue of the self-determination agitation that triggered this whole saga.
Concluding, Kanu said that his case is deliberately being shielded from judges and justices that are deemed to be committed to doing justice even when it means that the federal government must lose. Be that as it may, if it will take the rest of my life in detention to produce me before a proper and impartial court, so be it. But let me say this for the world to know: I will not succumb to any trial conducted by any judge or court whose jurisdiction does not pass constitutional muster. Not now, not ever.

Anambra State has taken a bold step to combat criminal activities linked to ritual killings and fraudulent spiritual practices with the enactment of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025.
The new law, signed by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, aimed to purge the state of criminal elements masquerading as native doctors and spiritualists, who have been accused of fueling a culture of get-rich-quick schemes through occult practices.
The law specifically targets evil native doctors, fake native doctors, and false prophets, all of whom are now considered persona non grata in the state.
Authorities emphasize that this is not a ban on traditional religion but a necessary measure to curb the rise of dangerous practices that have led to ritual killings and criminal activities.
Reports indicated that certain ritualistic practices, including the use of the Oke-ite pota clay vessel allegedly infused with body parts, herbs, and other ritualistic elements have been linked to human sacrifice and money-making rituals. Other associated practices, such as Uduakomili, Ibobo, and Awale, are also believed to contribute to the erosion of Anambra’s moral fabric by promoting fraudulent wealth acquisition.
In addition to these, Odeshi charms, which are said to provide bulletproof protection for criminals, have been widely used by kidnappers and armed robbers, further worsening insecurity in the state. These criminal activities have been blamed for luring Anambras youths into illicit means of acquiring wealth, undermining traditional Igbo values of hard work, diligence, and honesty.
Historically, Igbo society placed great emphasis on ethical business practices. The Igba-boi system, where young apprentices work under a master before earning the right to start their own businesses, has been internationally recognized, even by institutions like Harvard University, as a model for business incubation. However, recent years have seen a shift towards an unhealthy obsession with quick wealth, often without legitimate means.
Parents, once the custodians of discipline and integrity, are now accused of enabling their childrens criminal activities. Some even go as far as funding Yahoo training schools, where young people are taught online fraud under the pretense of reclaiming wealth from the West. This societal decay, according to critics, has resulted in a generation that prioritizes extravagant lifestyles over genuine hard work.
In response to the growing menace, Governor Soludo’s administration has launched Operation Udo-Ga-Achi, backed by a structured security network, Agunechemba, aimed at tackling crime at its roots. This initiative seeks to restore Anambra’s reputation as a land of industrious and morally upright individuals.
State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating criminal elements, stating that the fight is for the soul of Anambra. He urged citizens to support the enforcement of the Homeland Security Law, ensuring that traditional practices are not used as a cover for criminal activities.
As the battle against Oke-ite and its affiliated rituals intensifies, the government remains firm in its resolve to sanitize the state, ensuring that the next generation of Ndi Anambra upholds the values that once made the Igbo people a global model of hard work and integrity.

U.S. immigration and border officials will be able to arrest migrants at so-called sensitive locations again after the Trump administration overturned policies limiting where such arrests could happen.
Officers will now be able to make arrests at designated sensitive areas, including houses of worship, schools, and hospitals.
Later, the Biden administration expanded the regulation, further restricting the authority’s powers.
Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.
The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement and instead trusts them to use common sense.
The second directive reinstated expedited removal, allowing US ICE to quickly deport undocumented individuals unable to prove over two years of continuous residence.
ICE agents will immediately begin nationwide operations to arrest and deport undocumented individuals, as confirmed by Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, who did not disclose where the raids would take place.
“They’re going to do it throughout the country. We have offices throughout the country, and every ICE officer is going to be out there and enforce the law starting tomorrow morning”, Homan said.
The Police in Imo State have arrested a 35-year-old businesswoman identified as Edith Nwachukwu for battering her 13-year-old house help, Kelechi Ejieke.
The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Owerri Urban Divisional Police Headquarters after the minor was rescued from her at the popular Relief Market in Owerri, the state capital.
The woman, who is now detained by the police, accused the minor of stealing her money, an allegation which the minor denied.
According to our correspondent, the incident was reported to the police by human rights activist and founder of Stand for Humanity Foundation, Chidiebube Okeoma, along with some traders who alerted the police. The police came, picked up the minor, and arrested the suspect.
It was gathered that some traders who were present during the incident forcefully rescued the child from the businesswoman, who was not satisfied despite inflicting various degrees of injury on the girl.
Responding to the emergency call, men from the Owerri Urban Divisional Police Headquarters arrested the woman and rescued the minor.
The child, as was further gathered, was taken to a hospital in Owerri as the injuries she sustained were severe, and the suspect is currently cooling off at the police division.
Okeoma, while speaking to our correspondent, said that his attention was drawn to the incident following the call from the traders who rescued the minor, and he alerted the police.
Upon interrogation at the police station, the woman, who later pleaded for mercy, said her house help stole her money, an allegation the girl denied.
The woman said that it was anger that led her to maltreat the girl, as she pleaded for leniency.
The Stand for Humanity Foundation has vowed to see the end of the case, maintaining that the organization is interested in the matter and will ensure justice is served, to further serve as a deterrent to people who dehumanize children.

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, has vowed to tackle the commoditization (buying and selling) of Naira notes, which has become widespread in the country.
CBN Governor, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso made this vow in a keynote address at the inaugural Stakeholders Conference of the Committee of Heads of Banks Operations (CHBO) in Lagos, with the theme Commoditization of Naira: The Way Forward.
Represented by the Senior Special Adviser to the CBN Governor, Fatai Kareem, Cardoso stated that commoditization of the Naira poses a significant threat not only to the banking sector but also to the daily lives of Nigerians who rely on the currency for transactions.
He described Naira commoditization as a process by which the national currency is being treated as a tradable asset with its intrinsic national value being subjected to the principles of capitalism rather than being seen as a means of exchange for economic and items of value.
According to him, The Naira is not merely a currency; it embodies our national identity. Its stability is vital for economic growth and development. Recent trends, however, have seen the Naira treated as a commodity rather than fulfilling its primary function as a medium of exchange.
“The commoditization of the Naira, our national legal tender, has become a critical challenge for Nigeria’s financial ecosystem. It is a problem that not only affects the operations of the banking industry but also the lives of every Nigerian that relies on the currency for his day to day transactions”.
He said the apex banks strategies to tackle the commoditization of the Naira are: enhancing public engagement awareness on the responsible use of the Naira; strengthening cash management system to ensure fair distribution across the country; collaborating with law enforcement agencies to enforce existing regulations and bring perpetrators to book; promoting digital payment channels to reduce the use of cash transactions and the need to escalate digital errors to the banks and the CBN.
Chairman of the Executive Committee of CHBO, Abraham Aziegbe attributed the commoditization of the Naira to severe scarcity which led to its monetisation.
He noted that over the past two years, Nigerians have faced significant challenges due to cash shortages, leading to instances where citizens pay premiums for everyday transactions. This situation raises concerns about cash availability and potential hoarding practices among banks.
The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise has explained the implications of United States President, Donald Trumps administration on the price of Premium Motor Spirit and Nigeria’s economy.
The Chief Executive Officer of CPPE, Dr. Muda Yusuf, in an exclusive interview with Our correspondent on Tuesday, said that Trumps sweeping policy on the restart of oil drilling in the US and drive for investment would impact global oil supply, which would impact Nigeria’s crude revenue and the Naira.
It would be recalled that upon the inauguration of Trump on Monday as the 47th President of the US, he announced that the country would restart oil drilling to reduce energy prices.
Trump announced the US withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement and other milestone executive orders.
Reacting, Yusuf said that the US decision to restart oil drilling may boost global crude supply, thereby leading to a reduction in global oil price, which will in turn impact negatively on Nigeria’s crude oil revenue.
He, however, added that a reduction in global oil price would reduce local energy prices, which is good for businesses and Nigerians.
The renowned economist also believed that Trumps presidency would boost the US economy, thereby strengthening the dollar at the detriment of the Naira.
“If investment in oil and gas increases in the US, the US is a major oil producer that could increase the global supply.
“If the global supply of oil increases, energy prices are likely to fall. If the energy prices fall, that has implications for Nigeria’s revenue.
“It will negatively impact Nigeria’s oil revenue. But it may be positive for businesses because the reduction in crude price typically reduces the cost of energy locally. AGO, PMS and jet fuel prices will be reduced. It is a double-edged sword.
“That is one implication of Trumps presidency.
“The second implication is that if Trump is able to calm down the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, (Russia is a major oil and gas producer)- and he has the potential to do that then we are likely to see more production of oil; if that happens, oil production will increase and prices will drop.
”It will affect Nigeria’s oil revenue, but it will benefit businesses because the local price of energy will drop. That is the nexus between what will happen with Trumps policy and Nigeria’s domestic economy.
“Trump’s policy is likely to strengthen the dollar.
“From all indications, investment and employment are likely to improve.
“We are already seeing indications in their stock market. Investors confidence is on the rise.
“Once you have that, it will impact the currency. The stronger the dollar, the weaker the naira”, he said.
The reports also said that on Wednesday morning, Brent crude stood at $79.37, while the Naira to Dollar exchange rate stood at N1,552.78 at the close of business on Tuesday.
Nigeria relies on crude revenue as a key source of revenue for its annual budget.
It would be recalled that Nigeria’s N49.7 trillion 2025 budget proposal that is currently before the National Assembly was benchmarked at $75 per barrel and an exchange rate of N1,500 per dollar.

“We have had several meetings, had many ideas and decided on the best thing that is good for our people – which is AGRICULTURE. Any nation that does not richly invest in agriculture will spend their money abroad.
“Regrettably, we passed through the civil war when there was no food at all. Our people died because they did not have food. We must not fold our hands and beg for food. Let us Think First for food to eat. Let our people do active farming to have surplus food for consumption and preservation.
“Government at all levels should encourage active farming. Let all Mbaise breed farm extensively. We have sufficient food in the USA and it is bad that while we feed well there, our people suffer for food here. We decided to teach them how to fish and we will continue to encourage our people to cultivate food to quench hunger”, he maintained.

A Non-Governmental organization dedicated to the protection of human rights, International Human Right Today Initiative HRTI, led by Comrade Maiyasin, has filed a complaint with the Katsina State Police Headquarters, alleging that a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Dutsinma, CSP Bello Gusau, took a 15-year-old girl detained at the police station to his house, where she spent the night.
According to the organization, before taking the step to file the complaint, they conducted a thorough investigation and gathered evidence confirming that the girl spent the night at the DPO’s residence and not at the police station.
The organizations leader stated, The Katsina State Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Musa, has taken the matter very seriously. As a result, he set up an investigative committee and suspended the DPO from his duties, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Based on the findings gathered by the organization, Maiyasin stated, The girl had initially gone missing before she was found and taken to the Dutsinma Police Station. Due to the lateness of the hour, she was left at the station to spend the night. However, the DPO instructed the girls relatives, who came to take her home, to leave her, claiming he would personally take her home in the morning.
The next morning, when the girls relatives returned to the station to bring her food, they found that she was not there. The officers on duty in the morning shift informed them that she had not spent the night at the station. This led to a confrontation between the police and the girls relatives until she was eventually brought back to the station. However, she was wearing different clothes from those she had the previous night.
The organization claimed that the girl confirmed to them that she spent the night at the DPO’s house and that he had instructed her to go there. They further stated that they recorded her testimony to that effect.
It was obtained an audio recording where the girls father expressed his determination to seek justice for his daughter through the appropriate authorities.
After a detailed investigation, the organization submitted a formal complaint to the Katsina State Police Headquarters, urging the authorities to take appropriate action.
The spokesperson for the Katsina State Police Command, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu confirmed to newsmen that the complaint was received and that an investigation is ongoing into the allegations.
The investigation is expected to reveal the truth and ensure justice is served.
The Commissioner for Education, Primary and Secondary, Imo State, Prof JohnCliff Nwadike has expressed dismay that people have lost interest in reading.
Prof Nwadike stated this in an interview with newsmen on the occasion of public presentation of the book “Soul and Spirit” poetry of the heart plus more written by Joe Blaise Nnaemeka Akanazu held at Jubilee Hall, Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri, adding that for the author to write the book, there is hope.
He disclosed that many of the students can speak without the idea of reading, and enjoined all to form the habit of reading, according to him, “If you have a newspaper, read it before you lose it”, noting that production is not complete until it gets to consumption.
The Commissioner identified the book as a historical context, a book of life, a book of knowledge which will raise the interest of the reader to know more, a book that will nourish people’s body, adding that many people have no souls and many have no spirits.
He stressed the need for people to have some quiet moment with God, their friends and their children, otherwise they cannot write books and encouraged people to get the book, read it and digest it because it is the only way it can capture their soul.
Prof Nwadike also expressed bitterness that some parents do not give their children books to read at home, while some watch their children engage in businesses that are not educationally connected, and urged parents to give their children textbooks to read, buy books for them and encourage them to have access to the books, charging parents also to go back to the basics and reinvigorate the reading culture in their children.

A 33-year-old Chinese national identified as Chen Wang has been reported stabbed to death in his office at Fujiada Electronics Technology Company Ltd, located along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Wang, an expatriate and manager of the company, was allegedly killed in his office around noon on Sunday.

…May persuade a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has berated the Federal Government over the 50 per cent telecom tariff hike, tagging it as an additional burden too heavy to bear by the suffering masses.
President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero in a statement yesterday, decried the hike, stressing that the Federal Governments recent approval, through the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, came at a time when Nigerian workers and the masses were grappling with unprecedented economic hardship.
Ajaero also threatened that all Nigerian workers and masses will unite to reject the unjustifiable tariff hike.
He said, “We urge citizens to prepare for collective action, including the possibility of a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services, to compel the reversal of this punitive increase. This is for our dignity, our rights, and our survival as a people”
He also described the decision, as a clear assault on workers welfare and an abandonment of the people to corporate fat cats.
According to Ajaero, telecommunication services are essential for daily communication, work, and access to information. Yet, an average Nigerian worker already spends approximately 10 per cent of their wages on telecom charges.
Lamenting the situation, the NLC President argued that for a worker earning the current minimum wage of ₦70,000, this means an increase from ₦7,000 to a staggering ₦10,500 per month or 15 per cent of his salary is a cost that is unsustainable.
He said the hike exemplified the government’s apparent ease in prioritizing corporate profits over citizens welfare.
Ajaero said, It is shocking that the government approved this 50 percent tariff increase for telecom companies within a month, yet took nearly a year to approve the recent minimum wage for workers, despite the rising cost of living and inflation eroding purchasing power.
“This glaring disparity underscores a troubling reality: the government appears more aligned with the interests of wealthy corporations than with the needs of the workers and citizens it is meant to serve.
“We must ask: When will the government stand for the people it swore to protect? When will the National Assembly rise to its responsibility and hold the executive accountable for policies that blatantly undermine the welfare of the majority? When will the common man heave a sigh of relief in Nigeria?
He insisted that NLC is not opposed to a tariff review but disagrees with the approved rate of increase.
He however urged the Federal government, the NCC and the National Assembly to stop the implementation of this ill-advised hike to allow a reasonable conversation around it.
His words, “If the dialogue agrees on the need for the hike, then, we can all seek a more humane increase and definitely not this 50% hike.
“The NLC calls on all Nigerian workers and masses to reject this unjustifiable tariff hike. We urge citizens to prepare for collective action, including the possibility of a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services, to compel the reversal of this punitive increase. This is for our dignity, our rights, and our survival as a people.
“The Nigeria Labour Congress remains resolute in defending the interests of Nigerian workers and the masses. We will not allow the people to bear the brunt of policies that further entrench poverty and inequality. Together, we will do our best to resist this injustice and demand that government prioritizes the interests of its citizens over corporate interests”, Comrade Ajaero stressed.
The UK Minister of State for Defence, Lord Vernon Coaker has reaffirmed the longstanding defence partnership between his country and Nigeria in the fight against terrorism and counter insurgency operation in the North-East.
Coaker, who is on a working visit to Nigeria, stated this at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai, OPHK, in Maiduguri yesterday.

The minister reiterated the UK government commitment to support Nigeria in the fight against terrorism and shared impact of global security challenges.
“Your conflict is our conflict and your security is our security. The work you are doing to combat terrorism, particularly through initiatives like Operation Hadin Kai, is commendable.
“We are proud to provide training, expertise and equipment to support your efforts”, he said.
Lord Coaker listed the UK’s contributions to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency operations to include counter improvised explosive devices training, provision of equipment, and mentorship for the establishment of the Counter-IED Coordination Cell in the North-East.
Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, the Theatre Commander of the OPHK, commended the UK for its sustained support in combating insurgency in the region.
He described the visit as a testament to the longstanding cordial relationship between Nigeria and the UK.
“It gives me great pleasure to welcome Lord Vernon Coaker and his distinguished entourage to Maiduguri, the Home of Peace, which also hosts the Headquarters of JTF (NE) OPHK.
“This visit validates the strong partnership between our nations”.
Shaibu said the mandate of the task force was to restore normalcy to the region, provide enabling environment for socio-economic activities to thrive, as well as resettlement of displaced persons to their ancestral homes.
He noted that the fulfilment of the task force mandate required not only material resources but also regular training and retraining of troops to keep them updated on evolving security challenges.
The commander lauded the establishment of the Counter-IED Coordination Cell, supported by the UK, which became a hub for intelligence gathering and dismantling insurgent IED networks.
Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, yesterday locked out several civil servants at the state secretariat for coming late to office.
The governor took the action during an unscheduled visit to the state secretariat in Makurdi.
Alia visited the secretariat at about 10:35 am to inspect ongoing renovation works, including the installation of new lights, when security personnel attached to his convoy locked the gates which prevented several civil servants to access their offices.
He toured several ministries at the secretariat and expressed unhappiness about truancy as commissioners and other senior officials were absent from work.
Alia addressed a section of civil servants and expressed his concerns about their poor attitude to their duties.
He said, “With what you are doing, you are creating a vicious circle for your families. You cannot get money and be uplifted because you are cheats and because of the effect of what you are doing.
“The work I do is not for me, but for those who don’t know that I am the governor and those who will see me and not recognise me.
“I’m appealing to you because I have a quick way of getting your names and firing you as I have the power to do so. I am speaking to you as a priest and not as governor and telling you the dangers of what you are doing.
“It is not about me. Who is government? All of you here are the government. Even in the family, somebody governs the home and there are rules. And in every government there are rules. I am not frustrated but I do not want you to be doomed.
“See what you can do if not for yourselves but for the people you are caring for and are behind you because they are the ones to take the heat.
The Inter Party Advisory Council, IPAC, has told the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that so much is expected from the Commission in conducting free, fair, credible, transparent and inclusive elections that meet international standards.
The National Chairman of IPAC, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle spoke at the Independent National Electoral Commission, INECs first quarterly consultative meeting held in Abuja yesterday.
Dantalle pointed out that credible election is imperative for sustainable democracy and development, insisting that the electoral body must get it right in 2025, especially with off circle elections coming in Anambra.
The Council called on the Commission to commence preparations for the 2027 general elections immediately to enable it put in place all requirements in due time and to meet the expectation of Nigerians.
He said that while preparations for the Anambra State gubernatorial election are on, the Commission should also activate its Election Project Plan (EPP), Strategic Programme of Action (SPA), the 2022 2026 Strategic Plan and Strategic Plan Implementation Programme (SPIP) for the 2027 general election.
“To whom much is given much is expected, INEC should know that fellow compatriots count on it for transparent elections that will usher in visionary leaders who will transform the nation, IPAC said.
“The Commission should justify the confidence reposed in it, put its act together and improve on previous performance.
“There is no doubt that the conduct of successful election is a collective responsibility of stakeholders. It is the reason we must rebuild trust in the electoral process.
“Low voter turnout in previous elections is worrisome and a sad commentary in our democratic process. This narrative must change! We must continue to work together in ensuring electoral integrity, the sanctity of the ballot box and the mandate of the people”
IPAC urged stakeholders to support INEC in discharging its statutory duties which are essential in consolidating and strengthening constitutional governance.
Similarly, the Council urged the National Assembly to expedite action on the on-going Constitution and Electoral Act amendments, as time is of the essence, and as well ensure diligent and speedy consideration and passage of the 2025 appropriation bill.
“We also urge citizens to be alive to their civic responsibilities and ensure that those they voted into office should give genuine account of their stewardship. Their performance will determine their fate in future elections”, it added.
Expectations of Nigerians are becoming higher. Governments at all levels should articulate and implement people-focused programmes and projects that will assuage their sufferings and foster economic growth, political stability, social justice, religious harmony, and national security and unity.

A 22-year-old Precious of Oroakpo community, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, has admitted to the police that he sold one of the triplets of a family in the community for N200,000 to two Yahoo boys, who later killed her in the area.
Precious who was paraded alongside the elder sister of the triplets by the Police said the remains of the little girl were buried in a shallow grave in the community, adding that at the time he was arrested by community youths, he had not been given the N200,000 promised him by the Yahoo boys.
He said: “They are triplets about 10 years old and sisters to my girlfriend (pointing at his girlfriend standing beside him). I first told my girlfriend that she should give me one of the triplets to sell to the boys but she refused, walked away from me. I went to her again.
“But later I sent somebody to call one of the little girls, when she came, I led her to the boys who killed her in the village in my presence and buried her.
“I was arrested by the community youths the following day when they were looking for the little girl.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, who paraded the two suspects said the elder sister in her confessional statement admitted that the boyfriend earlier informed her of his plan, which she did not concede to, adding that the elder sister, however, failed to raise the alarm or even alerted her parents of the sinister plot by her boyfriend.
The boyfriend came to the elder sister of the triplets to give him one of the triplets, so they could use for rituals. She declined but she did not raise any alarm, either by reporting to her parents or the community. That same day one of the triplets got missing, the police spokesman said.
He said the girl only notified her parents when the child went missing and they were looking for her.
While they were looking for her, that was when the elder sister remembered that her boyfriend had earlier asked for one of the girls to use for money making rituals. She raised the alarm, told her parents and they brought in the community youths, who later arrested the boy.
The boyfriend confessed that he took the little girl to two boys who wanted the child. He said they approached him for the child, promising to pay him N200,000.
He said they had not given him the money when he was arrested by the community and the boy confessed that right before him that the boys killed the girl when he brought her.
At press time, the Yahoo boys who killed the little girl were still at large. Precious who sold the child to them said he didn’t know where they were, adding that he never met them before he had the deal with them.

The former Minister who has been in the United Kingdom, UK, since she left the shores of Nigeria claimed that the money linked to her in the media as a loot actually belonged to a Nigeria’s oil magnate, Kola Aluko.
Breaking her silence in the matter through her counsel, Prof Mike Ozekhome SAN, Mrs Alison Madueke insisted that there was nothing like “Diezani Loot”, since she had no hand whatsoever in the issues surrounding the forfeiture of the money by the owner.
Stating her position, the former minister said the $52.5m came from a vessel seized by the American government from Kola Aluko and which was later sold and proceeds returned to the federal government of Nigeria.
Her denial of ownership of the money was contained in a lengthy press statement issued yesterday by the Chambers of Mike Ozekhome SAN and titled ” There is no such thing as Diezani Loot “.
Part of the statement read “My chambers makes this intervention in the public domain as Solicitors to Diezani Alison-Madueke (DAM) ,the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, HMPR.
“As her Solicitors, we are fully versed in and conversant with her present ordeal and the entire facts surrounding her matters both here in Nigeria and abroad. So, we write from the vantage position of one that is aware of the cocktail of lies that have been spurned around her cases in the last ten years.
“Many of the narratives are outrightly false; some others sheer outlandish speculations; and most, simply bizzare stories cooked up by her traducers to extract a Shylock’s pound of flesh from her for reasons she does not know and cannot even fathom.
“This intervention therefore seeks to correct this skewed narrative and set the records straight for purposes of history. Many Nigerians often talk about wanting ‘technocrats’ to be involved in governance. They desire that people with character and integrity should join politics.
“We agree with them. However and regrettably too, now and again and many a time, the same people not only allow, but actually join the bandwagon to mob-lynch those who chose to serve the nation.
“And we often do this insidiously, covertly and overtly, even when there is no concrete or even any iota of proof that such public officers ever abused their offices or stole from public coffers.
“It is therefore surprising and of great concern to us, to see the level of sustained vilification of an innocent Nigerian citizen who has not yet been tried and found guilty of any offence known to law by any court of law whether in Nigeria or abroad. The person at the receiving end is Citizen Diezani Alison-Madueke (DAM).
“We note with concern the recent deliberate attempt to link her with what has been described as a civil forfeiture of a yacht Galactica, the sale of which was said to have yielded $52.8m to the US government; which sum has since been repatriated to Nigeria.
‘This is a clear example of the mischievous and cruel sport of tarnishing the image of the lady through a bouquet of consistent, persistent and unrelenting cocktail of falsehoods and misinformation.
“The purveyors of this line of misinformation term it “name-and-shame”. To sell the storyline, the architects ensured they attached Diezani’s name to a recovered yacht which is not in any way linked to her.
“They now falsely termed it “Diezani loot”. Nothing of the sort ever happened. She was never involved in the purchase, use and sale of the said yacht.
“The yacht Galactica, from information readily available in the public domain and in open sources, was purchased by Mr Kola Aluko who had used the vessel until he agreed to its forfeiture to the United States of America.
“The yacht Galactica was neither owned nor ever used by our client. DAM has in fact never set her eyes on the yacht. Kola Aluko is an experienced businessman who had been in business well before DAM came into office as HMPR.
“The only tenuous basis for deliberately linking DAM to the said yacht is the false narrative that the Strategic Alliance Agreements (SAAs) which were entered into between Kola Aluko & Jide Omokore’s Atlantic Energy companies and NNPC, were allegedly corruptly awarded to the said companies by DAM. DAM was not the GMD of the NNPC as so did not and could not have awarded the said contracts.
“We plead, as her lawyers, with all and sundry that she be accorded fair hearing and that the process of these UK court proceedings be allowed to take their natural course to avoid prejudice to her in the ongoing subjudice UK proceedings against her.
”Those purveyors and peddlers who habitually spin these outrightly false, unfounded, defamatory, unintelligent and indefensible narratives to denigrate and humiliate her should please find better use of their time and leave DAM alone.
“Let the law take its natural course without interference. We humbly pray”, the statement said.

“I am deeply saddened by the frequent occurrence of tanker explosions in the country, which always leads to loss of lives, injuries, and property damage.
“I share in the pain of the community who lost their loved ones in this devastating incident,” Yilwatda said.
He also offered his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

However, Baba-Arah said the death toll from the incident has risen to 86.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has reiterated his determination to transform Abia into a model state, free from discrimination based on geographical origins.
According to him, anyone who resides, works, and pays taxes in Abia is entitled to enjoy the same rights as others in the state.
Speaking at a wedding ceremony in Aba, Governor Otti commended Mazi Clement Owunna, CEO of STARLINE, for his unwavering commitment to Aba’s development, despite facing numerous challenges.
The governor revealed that individuals like Mazi Owunna, who share his vision for a rebuilt Abia, inspired him to leave his lucrative banking job and lead the charge for Abia’s liberation
“You know, in the old structure where they say you are from Imo, you are from Anambra, etc, in that structure, he (Clement Owunna) believed in Abia.
“I said to myself, so, I have stayed here and become a very successful Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, but by the time you retire, there would be no home to go to.
“So, I sacrificed that job and started struggling for almost ten years, and today, we are here,” the Governor stated while encouraging the people to prayerfully stick to and work on their dreams, saying that if it does not happen today, it will happen tomorrow or next.
He described his achievements in the last 19 months as a dress rehearsal, assuring that greater things are coming.
“What you see in Abia State in the last 19 months is actually what I will call dress rehearsal. You ain’t seen anything yet. I’m not boasting, I know what this State can do.
“The first thing we abolished is State of origin. If you stay here, if you live here then you are from here”, the governor asserted amidst applause from the audience
He explained that when he said he was going to appoint Ide John Udeagbala as the Mayor of Aba North, people doubted him, but he appointed him, and he went on to transform Aba North’s local government headquarters in just a year.
He said the same thing happened recently when he appointed Edo-born Benson Ojeikere as the Head of Service of the State; some people said he’s from Edo, hence, should not be appointed.
He said that he conducted an examination and oral interviews for the prospective candidates; Mr. Ojeikere came top and was appointed.
“The other day, I appointed somebody as the Head of Service of the State; some people say he is from Edo; I don’t know about that.
“He came here in 1999 and he has been here. He didn’t come on his own volition.
“God brought him here through Youth Service, and he distinguished himself as the best corper, and he was retained in the Civil Service… And somebody wants to tell me he’s not from Abia State”‘, he stated.
“What we are building here is a model State. No matter what anyone says, we are focused and determined. If you come to Aba in the next year, you will probably not recognize Aba.
“Very close here, there was an abandoned project called Enyimba Hotel. You would probably see a Radisson Blu sitting on it.
“And then you see a conference center by the side and you see another leisure park opposite it. This is our place, we must fix it”, the Governor declared.
He thanked the people for being supportive of his administration and assured them that he would never tamper with the State’s resources but would use them to fix the State.
The marriage ceremony attracted very important personalities from all walks of life, including the wife of the Governor, Her Excellency, Mrs. Priscilla Chidimma Otti, who attended with her husband.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the country’s challenges, emphasising that these obstacles are surmountable.
Speaking in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State over the weekend, during the commissioning of the Soybean Plant and Refinery of the CSS Group and the birthday celebration of Prof. John Kennedy Opara, former Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), Jonathan weighed in on the importance of collective effort in nation-building.
The event was attended by dignitaries including former Sierra Leonean President, Ernest Bai Koroma; Bayelsa State Governor Duoye Diri; former Cross River State Governor Prof. Ben Ayade; former Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Walter Onnoghen; and Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, represented by his deputy.
Jonathan cautioned against the increasing trend of migration, popularly referred to as “Japa,” urging Nigerians to contribute to the development of their homeland.
“You don’t need to Japa. Those countries you are running to were built by people. We must build this country together, and invest in it so that the youths can get jobs. We must not run away from our responsibilities. This country belongs to all of us, and we must not abandon it,” he said.
Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri echoed Jonathan’s sentiments, stating, “There is hope in Nigeria. So those who want to Japa, please, don’t Japa. Nigeria is a blessed country. If we all key into what the private sector is doing, no one will Japa.”
Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), addressed the nation’s food security issues, calling for urgent action to tackle hunger caused by high food price inflation. “The level of hunger in Nigeria is too high due to very high food price inflation,” he said, emphasizing the need for accelerated efforts to expand food production, lower food costs, reduce import dependency, and support local farmers.
Adesina recounted, “There is no doubt that Nigerian farmers can feed Nigeria. They did when I was Minister of Agriculture under President Jonathan. The price of rice at the time was N8,000 per bag; today it is over N100,000 per bag.”
He called for bold programmes and policy support for farmers and agribusinesses to develop agricultural value chains.
He also revealed that the African Development Bank, in partnership with the federal government and other stakeholders, is implementing a $538 million programme to develop special agro-industrial processing zones in eight states: Cross River, Imo, Oyo, Ogun, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, and the FCT.
He added, “The second phase of the special agro-industrial processing zones will cover all remaining 28 states in Nigeria. The SAPZ-Phase II is planned with a financing target of $1 billion, from the African Development Bank, the Arab Bank for African Economic Development, and the private sector.”
Former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma expressed optimism about Nigeria’s role in Africa’s progress, stating, “If positive things happen in Nigeria, we are happy because Africa can only get it right when Nigeria gets it right.
There was jubilation in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital following the pipe-borne water supply to the town began after nine years of non-existence of public water in the state.
The residents of Abakaliki woke up early morning to see water rushing in their taps which triggered jubilation and happiness across the major roads and streets.
Many residents due to the scarcity of water occasioned by dry season were seen with many gallons to fetch water which was rushing freely waiting for people to fetch it.
For many years, residents of Ebonyi State had not been enjoying a supply of pipe water from the State Water Board/Cooperation due to the inability of successive administrations to fix the existing water schemes due to negligence leaving the residents to depend on or resort to well water, borehole and sachet water.
Some of the residents who spoke to our reporter expressed happiness and gratitude to Governor Francis Nwifuru who took the bull by the horns to embark on rehabilitation of various water schemes in the state.
Some of the residents namely; Pastor Kingsley Maduakor, Joy Ajah, Cynthia Echiegu, Monday Alegu, and Joseph Nwojiji among others commended Governor Nwifuru for restoring the supply of pipe-borne water in the capital city after many years.
“I have been spending thousands of naira weekly on water due to scarcity of water. With the pumping of public water, we are grateful to the governor because water is life. We have been drinking all manner of water including the ones called pure (Sachet) water before now.
“We appeal to the governor and his team to sustain the pumping of public water to the streets to end scarcity of water, reduce cost of buying sachet water and drinking of bad water in the town” Maduakor pleaded.
The Acting Commissioner of Water Resources, Mr Franklin Chikaodili Ukah who monitored the pumping of the water from the Ezilo water scheme to the water reservoir at Abakaliki said that Governor Nwifuru was determined to provide potable water to the residents of the state.
Ukah who also moved around the streets of Abakaliki to monitor the supply of water to the various residential houses, expressed shock that some individual taps were damaged causing leakages and thereby wasting the water.
The streets the Commissioner visited in the Abakaliki metropolis include; Ezeobodo, lane by Nnorom Street, Goddy Ogbaga Avenue, Emefo, St. Patrick primary school Kpirikiri and Udemezue Street where the residents were shouting praises for the government of Nwifuru for restoring water supply.
He, however, warned landlords and caretakers of residential houses to repair and safeguard their water pipes and taps, stressing that defaulters would be arrested and their houses be sealed for economic sabotage.
He said that the Ezilo water scheme has commenced the supply of water while the largest scheme at Oferekpe has been completed waiting for a test run and full supply of water to Abakaliki.
“We have water schemes in Oferekpe and Ezilo which has been completed while the Ukahu and Ishiagu scheme is nearing completion. When the schemes are completed, water will be reticulated across the state” Ukah assured.
A child trafficking syndicate that specializes in stealing children from Ondo and Osun States have been arrested by operatives of the Ondo State Police Command
The suspects, Lukman Isiaka, 43; Abosede Olanipekun, 23; and Sabira Izuorah, 62, were apprehended with no fewer than 14 babies and toddlers that had been trafficked to Anambra State since 2023.
The babies and toddlers were recovered from the ‘orphanage’ of Izuorah in Ihiala, Anambra State, where they were trafficked to by Lukman and Abosede, who are both a couple.
Among the stolen babies were three weeks old, two weeks old, and two months old, among others.
While being paraded at the police headquarters in Akure, Izuorah, who claimed to have retired as a Director from the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Anambra State, admitted to having received the children from the couple.
“Lukman and his wife brought a total of 11 children to me. I don’t pay them; it is the adoptive parents that pay them. The adoptive parents don’t pay me; they give us food items and supplies.
“I stopped Lukman and his wife from bringing children for me in November, 2024. All the children were no longer with me, but I went to recover them from their adoptive parents. It didn’t start with me, and it will not end with me.”
On his part, Lukman, stated that Izuorah introduced him and his wife to the illicit trade when he left Ondo State to work in Anambra as a bricklayer.
According to him, Izuorah always pays him N500,000 per child, which she in turn sells to her prospective buyers for N1 million and above.
“I have been stealing children since 2023. I have given a total of 11 children to Izuorah. The method my wife and I use to steal the children is when we are going, and we see any child roaming about, we now call them that we will buy soft drinks and biscuits for them.
“She normally gives us N500,000 for each child that we bring to her. I met Izuorah when we went to Anambra to work. I’m a bricklayer. She was the one who introduced me to the business after training me, and since then I have been giving her children.
The Commissioner of Police in the State, Wilfred Afolabi, stated that the arrested couple led the police operatives to Anambra State, where Izuorah was arrested and moved down to Akure.
“During interrogation, the suspects admitted to abducting the child and other children from Ondo and Osun States and selling them to Sabira Izuorah, ‘f,’ age 62 years, in Ihiala, Anambra State, at the rate of One Million Naira (₦1,000,000) per child.”
Soludo said that 200 patrol vehicles had been procured and would be active in the nooks and crannies of the state.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has announced a reward that could be as much as N5 million for a whistleblower who gives information that will lead to the arrest of kidnappers and armed robbers.
It is also available for anyone with information that would lead to the discovery of their campsites and their round-up in the state.
Soludo made the announcement at the formal launch of Operation ‘ Udo Ga-Achi’,l (Peace shall Prevail), a joint security intervention force, on Saturday in Awka.
He said the security initiative was designed to safeguard the lives and well-being of all residents and visitors in the state.
According to him, there is a need for collective action to fight insecurity as the acts and dynamics of criminality have evolved and become hydra-headed.
“We are taking decisive action on security with the formal launching of Operation ‘Udo Ga-Achi’ because we are determined to fight criminality and ensure Anambra becomes the safest state.
“We need people in the communities to give information to security agencies through our toll-free line – 5111.
“For whistleblowers, anyone that gives us credible information that leads to the arrest of any kidnapper or armed robber or information that leads to rounding up of criminals in a camp will be paid a bounty of any amount up to a maximum of N5 million (depending on the class of criminal).
“We encourage each community to design and execute its security programme. On a monthly basis, any community with zero crime will get a reward of N10 million,” he said.
The governor said 2000 personnel drawn from the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and vigilante group known as ‘Agunechemba’, had been mobilised for the operation.
Soludo said that 200 patrol vehicles had been procured and would be active in the nooks and crannies of the state.
“This operation is designed to tackle the rising insecurity in Anambra, including kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, drug epidemic, criminal idolatry, land grabbing, touting and other violent crimes.
“On the part of the government, be rest assured that we are determined to take the criminals head-on and quadruple our efforts in security.
“For our long-term survival, we must rise and fight together. If you see or know something, say or do something! Silence means complicity,” he said.
Earlier, the governor signed the Anambra State Homeland Security Bill 2025 into law to legalise the new security initiative in the state.
He also announced Igwe Chidubem Iweka of Obosi as the Chairman of, the Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Council.

Senator Chris Anyanwu has dared former governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, to bring forward the “lengthy letter of apology” he claimed she wrote to the military government of the late Gen. Sani Abacha.
Anyanwu was imprisoned from 1995 to 1998 for treason after reporting on a purported failed coup d’état against Abacha’s government. Following the death of Abacha in June 1998, she was released by his successor General Abdulsalam Abubakar on health grounds.
Ohakim, 67, recently alleged while speaking with journalists that Anyanwu apologised to Abacha “and owned up that she told lies in order to sell her magazine.”
He also threatened to “publish a copy of that apology for Nigerians to see the type of person she really is.”
Addressing Ohakim’s claims and other comments he made about her autobiography “Bold Leap,” Anyanwu, 73, said in a statement made available to TheNiche on Sunday: “One thing to emphasize is that BOLD LEAP is my autobiography, meaning l wrote about myself not lmo State, Imo Government or former Governor Ikedi Ohakim. It is about my whole life and my life traverses many places outside Nigeria. Imo State and its toxic politics of the time were merely small chapters to what is a long story. BOLD LEAP is not an Imo story. No. It is not at all.
“I observe that Governor Ohakim had not read the book when he spoke. He spoke in rambling generalities not on specifics; went into the book review to borrow the observation of the reviewer on production. But with all the hot air he blew, he totally avoided talking of my accounts of some of the unforgettable things he did as Governor. He spoke like a man who took one look at himself in the mirror and went beserk. No, he should relax and read the full book. Then reflect. Things have got to change in lmo.”
She further said, “And finally, that bizarre story about a letter to Abacha, (may his soul rest in peace). How does a man of Governor Ikedi’s age and standing in society sit down and conjure up an asinine, egregious lie about someone writing apology to Abacha and the federal government. Is it intelligent to tell tales that are so hair-brained they can make a dog laugh?
“No one could write Abacha or his government and it became Nigeria’s greatest secret. How did it happen that a document that could have provided the propaganda hungry administration its greatest campaign weapon globally got locked up and no one else mentioned it, wrote about it in the numerous books written on that era in these 30 years? Except Ohakim!! Where was this letter written; when was it written, by whom and to whom was it given? And how did it happen that it was only lkedi Ohakim that had access to it? And by the way, where was lkedi Ohakim 30 years ago, in the DAYS OF TERROR when people were fighting, dying, escaping and suffering for Democracy? Was he helping the oppressors? There had to have been a relationship with the administration for them to have handed him this ‘dud’. Ohakim must explain this; explain what he did for a living at the time and what qualified him to keep Abacha’s secrets. When we get a glimpse into his opaque professional past, then we will appreciate why it is not beyond the realms of possibility for him to weave and fabricate this great lie.”
“And now, I dare Governor Ikedi Ohakim to produce the letter in his possession in court before forensic experts before the eyes of the world,” she continued. “He should remember it was a global story not just local and there were some who knew better. Coming out and telling this joke will make him an international clown. But Let him produce the letter he got from Gen. Abacha and government. Federal Government is a continuum. It should verify the letter in Ohakim’s hand, explain how it manifested and who produced it. Now, the letter writer will be tested for forgery. Let us understand that the games people played in their childhood may not carry them through old age.
“This time, His Excellency will not go on unchallenged. He has claimed to have a letter. He has threatened to publish it. I dare him to bring that letter physically (not publish). Bring it to be tested for forgery. Governor Ohakim has the right to reply any publication about him but he must know that he is to do so within the ambit of the law.”
Taking a swipe at Ohakim, Anyanwu, a veteran journalist, further said: “I have a great deal of respect for the office of Governor. It is not an office to be trifled with. The job is brutal, thankless and killing at times. And the weight of office is very heavy. And that is why even when they are out of office, society continues to hold them in high esteem and to rate their opinion highly.
“When a former Governor speaks, people listen and a certain level of decorum, decency and factuality or truthfulness is expected of him. It is completely aberrative to hear an Excellency depart from that standard to engage in street brawls and beer parlor talk. If he does, he invites insult.
“I do not know how to respond to Governor IkediOhakim’s latest public spat without running the risk of being found guilty of disrespecting the office he once held. But with due respect, I must engage with him on this matter because being a former Governor, people automatically assume that what he says is factual, truthful and reliable. But where it is clear that he deliberately set out to deceive and manipulate the public with egregious lies, then the facts must be publicly put straight before an idea from an old habit of lying and making up stories gets taken for truth.
“First, let me say that that trash-talking, recklessly libelous individual frothing in the mouth that spoke in that interview could not have been Ex-governor Ohakim. There must have been a mistake. Did he actually say all those things? I hope not. I am compelled to make this statement to address a claim reportedly made by him about me recently in the interview he granted journalists.”
The acclaimed journalist and politician defended the integrity of her memoirs, describing it as a book of the times.
“In that interview, he complained about my autobiography, BOLD LEAP recently presented to Nigerian readers. Bold Leap is a book of the times: elegantly crafted, brutally scrutinized and edited by some of the most gifted writers and editors in the country. One may argue about perspective but on factuality and historical correctness, Bold Leap is unassailable. So, if Governor Ohakim argues of a substantial factual error, I would say, “bring it on”. If it’s a matter of perspective, I would say: “it’s your perspective or mine”. There’s no one way of seeing the universe; no correct way of writing about me. It is as I deemed fit. The story is mine. I have written it and I did so with respect and compassion for others and due regard for the laws of the land.”
The Royal Family of Odenigbo, of Akpakwume community, Udi Local Government of Enugu State, has made a “Save-Our-Soul” call on Governor Peter Mbah over the continued incarceration of its 86-year-old blind monarch, Igwe Ekwueme Odenigbo by the Enugu State Police Command.
Children of the monarch, Pastor Solomon Ekwueme and Ozioma Roseline Ekwueme who addressed newsmen at a press briefing in Enugu, appealed to Gov Mbah to come to the aid of their ailing father and their younger brother from “unlawful incarceration.”
They also appealed to the senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Osita Ngwu; the Executive Chairman of Udi Local Government Area, Hyginus Ogbonnia Agu and well-meaning Nigerians “to come to our help and effect the immediate release of our 86-year-old blind father and our younger brother from the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Enugu formally known as Prison.”
“It is heartbreaking for us to be called back to Enugu that our aged and blind father, a retired elder in the Redeemed Christian Church of God and the king of our community has been locked up by the Nigeria Police and charged to a Magistrate Court and subsequently sent to prison at the behest of a man that has been nothing short of a terror to the entire people of Akpakwume community.
They alleged that “on the 23rd of December 2024, a man identified as Chief Okolo barged into the our father’s palace with over 20 boys bearing guns, axes and matches. They tossed our father, the Igwe, around like a piece of rag, held our mother the Lolo to a chokehold, beat up some persons that were in the compound that tried to mount a resistance.
The same man forced himself into our fathers’ room, took his Certificate of Oath, Staff of Office and royal crown.”
They also alleged that: “He also made away with some of our fathers’ portraits, official stamp and some cash from donations for the planned cabinet inauguration of his new Igwe-In-Council scheduled for 31th day of December 2024 and gifts from his subjects for the Christmas festivities.
“He claimed that the governor, Dr. Peter Mbah and the Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Deacon Okey Ogbodo had dethroned our father and authorised him to carry out his action.
“This is a decision the people of Akpakume are yet to receive any formal communication till this date and have never heard any announcement by the Governor or Commissioner substantiating it.”
But in a swift reaction, the Commissioner, Deacon Ogbodo, told newsmen that the monarch was undermining the state government and had been suspended.
He accused the monarch of giving authorization to a company, Eta-Zuma Mining Company to mine in the community without the state government’s knowledge, playing double standard and causing crisis in his community.
Ogbodo, however, he admitted that some of the items the monarch’s children accused the man, Chief Okolo, aka Zion of taking away from the palace on December 23, such as Certificate of Oath and Staff of Office were in his office.
The Incident, the monarch’s children said was duly reported to the police and followed with a petition to the Inspector General of Police by their father’s counsel, Anthony Ani (SAN), but the police had not acted on It.
“The petition met no response, and the police made zero arrests with regard to this criminal incidence,” adding that Chief Okolo had been bragging that nothing would happen because he had the full backing of the governor and the commissioner,” they claimed.
When contacted, Chief Okolo denied the allegations levied against him, insisting that he was the real victim, claiming that his house, a duplex, was burnt to ashes by the youths working for the Igwe.
He said the monarch was working against the constitution of the community and refused to listen to voice of reason, adding that law would take its cause in the matter.
Tragedy struck in the Amai community, Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, as a 70-year-old man, Mr Aghanti, and his 50-year-old daughter, Mrs Atagoshi, were reportedly beheaded over a land dispute.
The gruesome incident occurred after the suspect allegedly lured the victims into the bush under the pretext of discussing the land issue.
Their headless bodies were later discovered in the bush.
It was gathered that the woman, a secondary school teacher, had earlier purchased a piece of land in the community, which some individuals subsequently claimed.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bright Edafe, revealed that the assailant invited the victims to the bush, where the heinous crime was committed.
Edafe said, “The suspect called the woman, saying he wanted to discuss the land issue. He then took her and her father into the bush, killed them, and beheaded them.
“On the same day, vigilantes apprehended one Emeke with two human heads. He was mobbed and set ablaze by angry residents. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the human heads belonged to the father and daughter.
“Their headless bodies were found in the bush.”
Edafe added that the main suspect is currently on the run, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend him.
