Two dead, 20 injured in Gombe Eid-el-Fitr prayer ground stampede
A tragic stampede at the main Eid-el-Fitr prayer ground in Gombe state has left two people dead and 20 others hospitalized, police confirmed.
According to Buhari Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Gombe Police Command, the incident occurred at the exit gate shortly after prayers as worshippers attempted to leave the venue.
According to him, the stampede was triggered by inadequate exit access, leading to a rush of people, mostly women and children, trying to leave, adding that the intense heat worsened the situation, resulting in panic and overcrowding.
22 persons were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Tragically, a four-year-old boy and a six-month-old baby girl did not survive, as doctors pronounced them dead while receiving treatment. He stated.
The Gombe Police Command has urged prayer ground managers to keep all exit gates open to prevent future stampedes. The command also extended condolences to the grieving families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed his condolences to the victims families and ordered a thorough investigation to prevent a recurrence.
The safety and well-being of our citizens remain a top priority, Yahaya said in a statement released by his aide.
The governor also announced that the state government would cover all medical expenses for the injured.
W/Bank to approve Nigeria’s $632m loan request today
The World Bank is set to approve fresh loans totalling $632m to Nigeria amid mounting concerns over the country’s rising debt profile, the reports said.
The loans are to support critical areas, including nutrition improvement and quality basic education.
Information obtained from the World Bank’s website on Sunday showed that the two loans expected to be approved include $80m for the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria 2.0 project and $552m for the HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All programme.
Both projects are currently in the negotiation stage and are expected to receive final approval later. These new loans form part of a broader strategy by the World Bank to support Nigeria’s development agenda, focusing on healthcare, education, and community resilience.
The loans are expected to boost the government’s efforts to improve nutrition outcomes and enhance access to quality education for Nigerian children.
Meanwhile, the World Bank had already approved a $500m loan to Nigeria last Friday to support the country’s Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus Programme.
The approval, which took place on March 28, 2025, marked a significant step towards addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges through expanded access to livelihood support, food security services, and grants for poor and vulnerable households and firms.
The programme, officially titled the NIGERIA: Community Action (for) Resilience and Economic Stimulus Programme, is designed to provide essential support to households affected by economic downturns and bolster community resilience.
The initiative targets vulnerable populations by offering grants to households and small businesses to mitigate the economic hardships they face.
The loan approval is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s efforts to stimulate the economy through grassroots support, particularly amid ongoing challenges such as inflation and high living costs. The stimulus package will focus on improving food security and creating economic opportunities for communities hardest hit by recent economic fluctuations.
This approval occurred amid a delay in releasing funds for a previous loan targeted at poor and vulnerable Nigerians.
Further checks by our correspondent showed that the World Bank disbursed to Nigeria about $315m out of the $800m approved for the National Social Safety-Net Program Scale Up.
For over a year, Nigeria has yet to get any further funds from the World Bank on this loan project, which was approved in December 2021. The delay in funds disbursement is likely linked to the issues of fraud detected under the programme.
President Bola Tinubu launched a social safety net programme that will distribute N25,000 to 15 million homes for three months in observance of the 2023 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation was tasked with carrying out the $800m World Bank loan project.
However, the Federal Government had to suspend the cash transfer programme for further investigation and revamping following alleged misappropriations within the programme.
Former humanitarian minister Betta Edu was earlier suspended due to the misappropriation of N585m earmarked for palliative distribution.
Also, Edu’s predecessor, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, was being investigated by the EFCC. The ex-minister is being probed over an alleged laundering of N37.1bn during her tenure as a minister.
The World Bank also issued sanctions to individuals and businesses found committing fraud under the programmes.
Earlier, it was reported that the Federal Government would likely secure six new loans totaling $2.23bn from the World Bank in 2025 as the international financial institution continues to support the country’s economic and structural reforms.
Data from the World Bank’s official website indicated that this will bring Nigeria’s total approved loans to $9.25bn over three years, reflecting a growing reliance on multilateral funding to support critical sectors of the economy, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic resilience.
An analysis of Nigerian loan approvals from the World Bank since 2023 under the administration of President Bola Tinubu showed a significant increase in funding commitments.
Marine Le Pen banned from 2027 presidential race, handed four-year jail term
French far-right figurehead, Marine Le Pen, has been banned from running for political office for five years. This was the verdict as a Paris court found her guilty of embezzling European Union funds.
The court also handed Le Pen a four-year prison sentence with two years suspended, but she will serve it under house arrest.
Le Pen has also been asked to pay a €100,000 ($108,000) fine.
Her lawyer has already confirmed Le Pen will file an appeal.
Le Pen’s party, National Rally, RN, was ordered to pay €2 million in fines for the €4.1 million that it was accused of embezzling.
Judge Bénédicte de Perthuis noted that Le Pens actions amounted to a serious and lasting attack on the rules of democratic life in Europe, but especially in France.
De Perthuis said Le Pens immediate ban on running for office was tied to democratic public unrest that would result from the election of a person convicted of embezzlement.

These operations underscore the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to dismantle criminal networks and ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians.
For further updates, the police encourage citizens to report suspicious activities and support ongoing security efforts nationwide.

Diri noted that Turnah was suspended because he had been enlisted to create factions in Bayelsa PDP.
The governor also stated that holding such event at a time the political crisis in Rivers State had heightened ethnic tensions and could degenerate into conflict in the state.
He further stated that the alarm was imperative given that the FCT Minister had threatened to cause crisis in PDP-governed states in the country.

“I urge security commanders in the state to be on the alert. Parents and traditional rulers should discourage their wards and children from being used by unscrupulous elements to cause trouble in the state.”

“As you are aware, we have threats from our sister state. The political crisis there is threatening us and we will not allow what is happening there to come into Bayelsa State.
“We had in our party a renegade, who has decided to form a parallel PDP in Bayelsa State, working with an ex-governor.
“The party in our state suspended him for gross misconduct and for now he is not a member of our party in Bayelsa State.

Crackdown on fake drugs: Reps caution NAFDAC
The House of Representatives has called on the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to exercise caution in its ongoing efforts to eliminate fake and counterfeit medicines across the country.
The lawmakers emphasized the need for the agency to ensure that its raids do not inadvertently affect legitimate pharmaceutical businesses operating within the law.
The decision of the House followed the adoption of a motion moved by the member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Anambra State, Afam Ogene at a plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
He said, The House is aware that NAFDAC recently sealed medicine markets in Idumota, Lagos State, Ariaria in Aba, Abia State and Onitsha in Anambra state.
We are aware of the ongoing enforcement operations by NAFDAC in these drug markets as a necessary step to eliminate counterfeit and substandard medicines from the country.
However, we are deeply concerned about reports from affected traders who claim that the crackdown has indiscriminately disrupted businesses, including those of legitimate operators.
This blanket approach has reportedly led to significant financial losses and the destruction of goods for many innocent individuals.
Ogene expressed concern over reports that NAFDAC sealed the affected markets, barring traders and their leadership from entering. Meanwhile, its officials allegedly broke into shops and confiscated pharmaceuticals without allowing the shop owners to be present or take inventory.
Describing the approach as brazen, Ogene criticized the unilateral break-in and seizure of goods, arguing that excluding market leaders and shop owners from the process undermines accountability and casts doubt on the integrity of the operation.
According to him, Some traders and Point of Sale operators were forced to leave significant amounts of cash in their shops during the sudden raid and closure of the markets over the weekend, with no clear means of recovering their funds, leading to frustrations and bewilderment.
In its sole resolution, the House directed its Committee on NAFDAC to Investigate these concerns, to ensure that livelihoods of innocent vendors engaged in legitimate businesses in the affected markets are not unfairly impacted.

27-yr-old kidnapper bags 60 years imprisonment in Ibadan
A Federal High Court in Ibadan, on Thursday, sentenced a 27-year-old kidnapper, Umar Babangida, to 60 years imprisonment.
The convict, found guilty of three charges bordering on kidnapping and cybercrime (ransom demand), each with a 20-year jail term, will, however, run the sentence concurrently.
Justice N. E. Maha said Babangida was convicted and sentenced based on the evidence tendered against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).
She said DSS was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the convict was a kidnapper through his confession in the video clip and other pieces of evidence against him.
She, however, discharged Babangida of the charges of unlawful possession of firearms and conspiracy for want of evidence.
“Therefore, Babangida is sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in Agodi for each of counts one, three and five, respectively.

Matteo Bruni, The Vatican spokesperson, provided an update after confirming on Wednesday that new blood tests had shown “slight improvement” in some of the Pope’s inflammatory markers.
The 88-year-old pontiff had contracted a severe case of pneumonia in 2023, leaving him more vulnerable to respiratory infections during the winter months.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the Pope on Wednesday, becoming the first high-profile visitor to see him. After her 20-minute visit, she stated that Pope Francis was in good spirits and “joking as usual.”
The Pope was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on February 14 after a bout of bronchitis worsened. Doctors confirmed on Tuesday that he was diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.
Rowdy senate session as senator Natasha protests seat change …Akpabio Intervenes to Prevent Suspension
The Senate descended into a rowdy and dramatic session during plenary after a heated exchange between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) over the unauthorized relocation of her seat.
The commotion nearly disrupted proceedings, with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan refusing to comply with the seat change, citing Order 10 of the Senate Standing Rules, which protects members’ privileges.
Trouble started when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan entered the chamber and discovered her nameplate missing from her usual seat. Outraged, she raised her voice in protest, demanding an explanation.
As the plenary commenced, Senate Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North), raised a point of order, alerting Akpabio to what he described as Natasha’s “improper seating position.”
Before Monguno could conclude his statement, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan forcefully interrupted, demanding to know why her seat was changed without her consent, leading to a heated back-and-forth.
As voices rose and tempers flared, Akpabio ordered the Sergeant-at-Arms to escort her out of the chamber, warning that she could face suspension if she refused to remain silent.
“Can the Sergeant-at-Arms please take her out of the Senate?” Akpabio ordered.
Her microphone was switched off as security personnel attempted to remove her, but she resisted, raising her voice even louder.
Sensing the situation escalating, some senators intervened, urging calm. Senators from Kogi State, led by Senator Isah Jibrin (APC, Kogi East), pleaded for understanding, while Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) and others attempted to de-escalate tensions.
Reacting to the disruption, Akpabio likened the situation to South Africa’s Parliament, where opposition leader Julius Malema frequently faces calls to “sit down.”
Recalling a similar incident during his time in the 8th Senate, Akpabio noted that he too had protested a seat reassignment but had handled it without public confrontation.
“In the 8th Senate, my seat was changed without prior notice. I voiced my displeasure, but the matter was resolved internally,” he said.
He further suggested reverting to the old microphone system to prevent senators from speaking out of turn, sarcastically apologizing “on behalf of the contractor” for the issue.
As the session progressed, Senator Isah Jibrin cited Order 42 (personal explanations), apologizing on behalf of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and attributing the seat change to recent resignations and reassignments.
Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West) defended the seat reallocation process, criticizing Natasha’s reaction as unnecessary.
“When she came in, we extended an arm of friendship to her, we loved her too much. I don’t know why she turned the place upside down,” he said, urging her to apologize.
In the end, Senator Akpabio intervened, offering Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan a soft landing.
“Senator Karimi, I can see that you are very hurt. I just want to appeal to you to temper justice with mercy,” he said.
Emphasizing that seat reallocation is routine and governed by the Senate’s Standing Orders, Akpabio clarified that senators must speak from assigned seats but that changes are at the Senate President’s discretion.
“I want the public to understand that our proceedings are governed by rules and the Constitution,” he concluded.
How I Challenged Babangida, Told Him He Failed To Make History – Tinubu
The President also hailed the former head of state for his contributions to national building, narrating how Babangida inspired him to in politics.
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday recalled how he once challenged the former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, and told him that he failed to make history.
Babangida, former military dictator, ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993. He is renowned for annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential election believed by many to be won by the late businessman, Moshood Abiola.
Babangida was Nigeria’s leader when Tinubu was elected to the Senate to represent Lagos West in 1992.
Speaking at a book launch in honour of Babaginda, Tinubu recalled how he confronted Babangida for always postponing their inauguration after winning election.
He said that he feared he would be imprisoned for confronting the then head of state.
“I confronted you that you had an opportunity to make history that day and you failed to do it. Why not inaugurate us? Why are you calling us back and postponing the inauguration?
“They thought I would end up in jail. You came out right at the end of the remark, you shook me. I can’t forget that,” Tinubu said amid applause from the crowd.
The President also hailed the former head of state for his contributions to national building, narrating how Babangida inspired him in politics.
“Without you, people like me won’t be in politics. Your progressive revolution to say that you want young, brilliant people in politics, you inspire some of us,” Tinubu said.
In his remarks, Babangida shared an insight as to why he annulled the June 12 presidential election.
32 years after the election, Babangida said he acted to protect the country’s interest.
APGA will retain control of Anambra in November election – Spokesman …Says party is the most stable in Nigeria
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has expressed confidence in its ability to retain control of Anambra State in the November 8, 2025 governorship election, describing itself as the most stable political party in Nigeria.
In an exclusive interview with newsmen, Ejimofor-Opara, the National Publicity Secretary of APGA, highlighted the party’s ideological commitment to fostering a progressive society and emphasized its 18 years of uninterrupted leadership in Anambra State.
Ejimofor-Opara pointed to significant achievements in education, health, and agriculture, citing the employment of 5,000 qualified teachers within the first five months of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration as an example of APGA’s commitment to development.
“Anambra has been on a steady course of development under APGA’s leadership. If the election were held tomorrow, we are prepared,” he stated, dismissing APC’s claims of being capable of taking over the state.
He described APGA as a people-centered party, emphasizing that its governance prioritizes both infrastructure development and the welfare of the people.
Speaking on the upcoming election, Ejimofor-Opara dismissed the APC’s ambitions in Anambra, asserting that APGA’s internal stability and intact membership would ensure its continued dominance.
“Talk is cheap. APGA’s house is in order, and our membership remains intact. Anambra voters have seen the tangible benefits of our leadership, and they are in high spirits to support us again,” he said.
Ejimofor-Opara reiterated APGA’s call for true federalism, advocating for a system where states control their resources and determine their internal governance.
“APGA calls for a federalism where the federating units are empowered to decide and manage what works best for them. Beyond infrastructure, we focus on people’s welfare, which reflects our motto: ‘Be your brother’s and sister’s keeper.’”
He argued that granting states control over their resources and policing would lead to greater development and address insecurity more effectively.
Addressing perceptions that APGA is limited to the Southeast, Ejimofor-Opara highlighted the party’s national footprint, citing its representation in Benue, Bayelsa, and Niger States.
“It’s incorrect to say APGA is confined to the Southeast. We’ve had federal legislators in other regions, and we continue to expand our national influence”, he explained.
Ejimofor-Opara acknowledged past leadership crises but emphasized that APGA remains ideologically driven and has emerged stronger from its challenges.
“Every leadership challenge we face makes us better. We are the only political party formed within the same period that is still standing strong today,” he added.
On the petroleum industry, Ejimofor-Opara expressed optimism that fuel prices would decrease as competition increases and more refineries become operational, likening the process to the early days of GSM technology.
He also commended the tax bill before the National Assembly, describing it as a laudable initiative if implemented properly, while calling for improved human capital development and better data management.
