The operatives successfully recovered the vehicles, which are now at the command headquarters for identification by their owners.

Lightning reportedly struck a herder and about 12 cows dead in Southern Kaduna on Sunday.

According to report, the incident occurred in Matuak Giwa, Bondon District, Moroa Chiefdom, in Kaura Local Government Area of the state.

The Village Head of Matuak Giwa, Simon Ayuba, confirmed the incident yesterday.

He explained that the young herder was taking shelter from the rain alongside his cattle when the thunderstrike hit, killing them instantly.

The herder, along with 12 cows, died on the spot. It was a tragic occurrence that has left the community in shock, Ayuba said.

Mallam Tanko Isiyaka, the Ardo of Bondon District, also confirmed the incident, disclosing that the deceased herder hailed from Bauchi State.

Tanko expressed sadness over the incident and called for prayers and support for the bereaved family as the victim was laid to rest according to Islamic rites.

Two dead, 20 injured in Gombe Eid-el-Fitr prayer ground stampede

A tragic stampede at the main Eid-el-Fitr prayer ground in Gombe state has left two people dead and 20 others hospitalized, police confirmed.

According to Buhari Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Gombe Police Command, the incident occurred at the exit gate shortly after prayers as worshippers attempted to leave the venue.

According to him, the stampede was triggered by inadequate exit access, leading to a rush of people, mostly women and children, trying to leave, adding that the intense heat worsened the situation, resulting in panic and overcrowding.

22 persons were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Tragically, a four-year-old boy and a six-month-old baby girl did not survive, as doctors pronounced them dead while receiving treatment. He stated.

The Gombe Police Command has urged prayer ground managers to keep all exit gates open to prevent future stampedes. The command also extended condolences to the grieving families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya expressed his condolences to the victims families and ordered a thorough investigation to prevent a recurrence.

The safety and well-being of our citizens remain a top priority, Yahaya said in a statement released by his aide.

The governor also announced that the state government would cover all medical expenses for the injured.

Oil and gas host communities urge President Tinubu to intervene in Rivers political crisis …declares support for reelection of Tinubu in 2027

Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas (HOSTCOM) have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, citing concerns over its potential impact on the state’s stability and economic contributions to the nation.

The political turmoil in Rivers State arising from a power tussle between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his erstwhile godfather, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, led to a declaration of state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu last week. It has drawn nationwide attention, with concerns about its potential effects on governance and development.

In a press briefing by HOSTCOM leadership yesterday, the group appealed to President Tinubu to use his good offices to ensure an amicable resolution of the political imbroglio, which has engulfed Rivers State.

Emphasising that they are neither on the side of Governor Siminalayi Fubara nor that of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, they urged all parties involved to sheathe their swords and embrace peace in the interest of the people of the state.

“We know and trust that Mr. President has the capacity to restore peace and sanity in the state. We are sure that Mr. President will do this for us”, Dr. Benjamin Style Tamaranebi, president of HOSTCOM, said.

The group also declared full support for President Tinubu’s administration and his re-election bid in 2027. Citing progress in security, economic reforms, and infrastructural development, HOSTCOM expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership and his ability to steer Nigeria towards sustained growth.

President Tinubu has steadied the ship. He has empowered local communities. And he needs more time to finish what he started, the statement declared.

HOSTCOM outlined key reasons for endorsing Tinubu’s second term, saying that for decades, oil theft and pipeline vandalism have crippled Nigeria’s economy.

“The twin cancerous maladies also destroyed the normal life of our people. President Tinubu, through his strategic partnerships with Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) and other security agencies, has reduced oil theft to historic lows.

“The oil and gas sector long left for dead has staged a stunning comeback. Crude oil production has jumped from a shameful 600,000 barrels per day to a respectable 1.8 million. Nigeria is earning its rightful place in the global oil market for the first time in years.

“The refining revolution has begun. The Dangote Refinery, now operational, in strategic synergy alongside Port Harcourt and Warri Refineries are all refining and taking away over-dependency on importation of refined petroleum products. With the new leaves of Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), under the able and competent leadership of its Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), MallamMeleKyari, Hon. Minister of State (Oil) Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri is poised to end decades of dependency on petroleum imports. The deal is clear: refine locally, save forex, and strengthen the naira.

“Revenue has more than doubled, hitting over N9.1 trillion. The days of borrowing to pay salaries are fading into history. Debt servicing, once a back-breaking 97% of national income, is now 68% and declining.

“Beyond oil, Tinubu’s infrastructural vision is taking shape. The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is no longer a campaign promiseit is breaking ground. The Sokoto-Badagry Highway will link the North to the Southwest in ways never imagined. Long abandoned roads, including the East/West Highway, Benin/Warri Highway, Asaba/Benin and Abuja/Benin/Highway, among others, are being constructed and rehabilitated. Just last week, Mr. President officially flagged off the construction of the 17.55 kilometres access road to the Second Niger Bridge, linking Anambra and Delta States.

“The Students Loan Fund is a game-changer. N45.6 billion has been processed, ensuring that no student is left behind due to financial hardship.

“Jobs are returning. Over 400,000 have been created through micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The tech sector is seeing unprecedented investment, signaling a new era for Nigerian innovation.

“The solid minerals sector is another goldmine in the making. It is valued at over $700 billion and is finally getting the attention it deserves. If managed well, Nigeria could soon rival top global mining nations.

“More beneficial to our belt was the recent signing into law by Mr. President the bill for the establishment of the South-South Development Commission, recently passed by the National Assembly. We commend Mr. President for this act of benevolence to the South-South geopolitical zones and other five zonal belts that benefitted from the presidential gesture.

HOSTCOM also commended the president for signing into law the bill establishing the South-South Development Commission, which they believe will complement existing development agencies in the region, including the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to accelerate progress.

While asking for more time for the President to complete the work he has started, HOSTCOM added, “Politics is about choices. In 2027, Nigerians must choose between continuity and chaos; between stability and the unknown”.

Extend naira-for-crude deal to avert fuel price hike, HURIWA urges Tinubu

The Human Rights Writers Association has urged President Bola Tinubu to extend the naira-for-crude deal between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and local refineries, including Dangote Refinery

The group warned that the termination of the deal could lead to a sharp rise in fuel prices and worsen economic hardship for Nigerians.

In a statement yesterday, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, called on Tinubu to direct his economic team to renegotiate the deal to prevent further strain on struggling households and businesses.

“In the spirit of the Sallah celebrations and given the public shows of supplications to God by the President and other public office holders as part of the end of the fasting and lenting period, we are praying President Tinubu to direct his Coordinating Minister for the Economy and the Minister of Finance to transparently and rapidly reach agreement to continue the naira-to-crude deal with local crude oil refineries, including the Dangote Petroleum refinery.

“We make this public supplication and appeal because any alteration to this deal would mean excruciating hardships and the massive affliction of poverty on millions of the already suffering, struggling and multidimensionally poor households, the statement read.

The naira-for-crude arrangement, introduced in October 2024 and expiring on March 31, 2025, allowed local refineries to receive crude from NNPCL with payments made in naira. With the deal now ended, oil marketers have projected an increase in petrol pump prices if the deal is not renewed.

Onwubiko cautioned that higher fuel costs could force small businesses reliant on petrol generators to shut down, leading to job losses and worsening poverty levels.

HURIWA told President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that our assessment of the public perception of the failure to keep the implementation of the naira-to-crude deal showed that more and many more Nigerians would be thrown out of work given that the operational costs of running small and medium scale businesses that depend on privately generated electricity power supply which come basically from petrol-powered generators, means immediate closure of hundreds of thousands of businesses and eventual dismissal of thousands of private sector workers.

He added, HURIWA argued basically that the most affected segment of the society are the over 133 million multidimensionally poor households going by even the old 2018 statistical data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

HURIWA reminded President Tinubu that last year, World Bank projected that several millions of Nigerians automatically became multidimensionally poorer than we were in 2018 because of the excruciating costs of living crisis in Nigeria.

Citing the World Bank and National Bureau of Statistics, HURIWA noted that over 133 million Nigerians are already classified as multidimensionally poor, with rising living costs further worsening their situation.

The group urged the Tinubu administration to act swiftly, warning that ignoring the economic realities could push millions into greater hardship.

W/Bank to approve Nigeria’s $632m loan request today

The World Bank is set to approve fresh loans totalling $632m to Nigeria amid mounting concerns over the country’s rising debt profile, the reports said.

The loans are to support critical areas, including nutrition improvement and quality basic education.

Information obtained from the World Bank’s website on Sunday showed that the two loans expected to be approved include $80m for the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria 2.0 project and $552m for the HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All programme.

Both projects are currently in the negotiation stage and are expected to receive final approval later. These new loans form part of a broader strategy by the World Bank to support Nigeria’s development agenda, focusing on healthcare, education, and community resilience.

The loans are expected to boost the government’s efforts to improve nutrition outcomes and enhance access to quality education for Nigerian children.

Meanwhile, the World Bank had already approved a $500m loan to Nigeria last Friday to support the country’s Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus Programme.

The approval, which took place on March 28, 2025, marked a significant step towards addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges through expanded access to livelihood support, food security services, and grants for poor and vulnerable households and firms.

The programme, officially titled the NIGERIA: Community Action (for) Resilience and Economic Stimulus Programme, is designed to provide essential support to households affected by economic downturns and bolster community resilience.

The initiative targets vulnerable populations by offering grants to households and small businesses to mitigate the economic hardships they face.

The loan approval is expected to significantly enhance Nigeria’s efforts to stimulate the economy through grassroots support, particularly amid ongoing challenges such as inflation and high living costs. The stimulus package will focus on improving food security and creating economic opportunities for communities hardest hit by recent economic fluctuations.

This approval occurred amid a delay in releasing funds for a previous loan targeted at poor and vulnerable Nigerians.

Further checks by our correspondent showed that the World Bank disbursed to Nigeria about $315m out of the $800m approved for the National Social Safety-Net Program Scale Up.

For over a year, Nigeria has yet to get any further funds from the World Bank on this loan project, which was approved in December 2021. The delay in funds disbursement is likely linked to the issues of fraud detected under the programme.

President Bola Tinubu launched a social safety net programme that will distribute N25,000 to 15 million homes for three months in observance of the 2023 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation was tasked with carrying out the $800m World Bank loan project.

However, the Federal Government had to suspend the cash transfer programme for further investigation and revamping following alleged misappropriations within the programme.

Former humanitarian minister Betta Edu was earlier suspended due to the misappropriation of N585m earmarked for palliative distribution.

Also, Edu’s predecessor, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, was being investigated by the EFCC. The ex-minister is being probed over an alleged laundering of N37.1bn during her tenure as a minister.

The World Bank also issued sanctions to individuals and businesses found committing fraud under the programmes.

Earlier, it was reported that the Federal Government would likely secure six new loans totaling $2.23bn from the World Bank in 2025 as the international financial institution continues to support the country’s economic and structural reforms.

Data from the World Bank’s official website indicated that this will bring Nigeria’s total approved loans to $9.25bn over three years, reflecting a growing reliance on multilateral funding to support critical sectors of the economy, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, and economic resilience.

An analysis of Nigerian loan approvals from the World Bank since 2023 under the administration of President Bola Tinubu showed a significant increase in funding commitments.

Dele Momodu to Tinubu: Don’t kill democracy in Nigeria

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Dele Momodu, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu and the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months, labelling the move as anti-democratic.

Momodu argued on Channels TVs The Morning Brief yesterday that the decision contradicts the democratic ideals Tinubu once advocated.

“I think it is very unfortunate. I know President Tinubu very, very, very well. Though I’ve not been in the same party with him and all that, we were together in exile, and he fought gallantly for this democracy. So a lot of us, co-comrades at that time, are actually very embarrassed that we have a pro-democracy leader in government, and yet what we are witnessing is worse than dictatorship”, Momodu remarked.

He continued, “And I have said it openly so many times, in many open letters, you can fail in economy, no problem; people will forgive you and say you’re not a professor of economics. You can fail in other areas, but don’t fail in democracy.

“You must deepen our democracy, which President Goodluck Jonathan succeeded in doing, which Obasanjo succeeded in doing, despite allegations and accusations of a third term attempt, still managed to hand over power to President YarAdua”.

Momodu urged Tinubu to reassess his stance and reconsider his course of action.

“I’m pleading with President Bola Tinubu, Please don’t kill democracy in Nigeria. Everybody who loves him will tell him this. I don’t; I’ve not asked him for anything, but we love him for his contributions to the motivation in the back, which is what is going down the drain”, he asserted.

Additionally, Momodu accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of suppressing opposition voices and cautioned Tinubu against being misled by his advisers.

“The only thing that can guarantee a second term is to do your job well. You do not need to intimidate anybody”, the former presidential candidate said.

Marine Le Pen banned from 2027 presidential race, handed four-year jail term

French far-right figurehead, Marine Le Pen, has been banned from running for political office for five years. This was the verdict as a Paris court found her guilty of embezzling European Union funds.

The court also handed Le Pen a four-year prison sentence with two years suspended, but she will serve it under house arrest.

Le Pen has also been asked to pay a €100,000 ($108,000) fine.

Her lawyer has already confirmed Le Pen will file an appeal.

Le Pen’s party, National Rally, RN, was ordered to pay €2 million in fines for the €4.1 million that it was accused of embezzling.

Judge Bénédicte de Perthuis noted that Le Pens actions amounted to a serious and lasting attack on the rules of democratic life in Europe, but especially in France.

De Perthuis said Le Pens immediate ban on running for office was tied to democratic public unrest that would result from the election of a person convicted of embezzlement.

NSCDC seizes 70,000 litres of stolen crude oil in Rivers

NSCDC

The Commandant Generals Special Intelligence Squad, CGS SIS, in a swift response to an intelligence tip-off, has impounded a long caravan truck with an in-built tank fully loaded with stolen crude oil.

CSC Afolabi Babawale, National Public Relations Officer, NSCDC National Headquarters, Abuja, in a statement yesterday, said the truck was sighted while in transit around Eleme Flyover in Elelewon, Port Harcourt, and was impounded by the CGS SIS.

In a brief interview, the CGS SIS Boss, Commandant AS Dandaura, hinted that his men were swiftly deployed to the crime scene, and upon arrival, they impounded a red-head navy blue container truck with registration number AGL574XY, which was fully loaded with siphoned stolen crude illegally drawn from vandalized wellheads and destroyed pipelines.

Commandant Dandaura relayed that the conveyors of the truck took to their heels as the operatives approached the scene of the crime.

He noted that the exhibits have already been confiscated as the investigative process has been launched to track down the syndicate that perpetrated such a heinous act of economic sabotage.

For the records, the exhibits recovered at the point of arrest are: a red-head and navy blue container with 10 tyres (Reg. No. AGL574XY) and an estimated content of about 70,000 litres of stolen crude.

Hence, upon the expiration of a thorough investigation, the NSCDC would file for forfeiture of the mode of conveyance and the contents at a court of competent jurisdiction. Thereafter, the proceeds would be remitted to the Proceeds of Crime Account (POCA).

The CGS SIS Commander further expressed the Squads commitment to waging a relentless war against oil thieves and their sponsors, affirming that suspects arrested would be brought to book after a diligent investigation.

Tinubu extends Immigration boss, Nandap’s tenure till 2026

The tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, Kemi Nandap has been extended till December 31, 2026, by President Bola Tinubu.

Under her leadership, the Nigeria Immigration Service has witnessed significant advancements in its core mandate, with notable improvements in border management, modernisation of immigration processes and national security measures.

President Tinubu commended the Comptroller-General for her exemplary leadership and urged her to continue dedicating herself to the Services strategic priorities, which align with his administrations Renewed Hope Agenda, the statement read.

Nandap joined the NIS on October 9, 1989 and was appointed as Comptroller-General on March 1, 2024, with an initial tenure set to end on August 31, 2025.

2027: Mixed reactions trail bill to stop Tinubu, Obi, Atiku, others

A bill currently on the floor of the House of Representatives, seeking to stop anyone above 60 years from vying for election to the offices of the Nigerian President and State Governor has triggered controversy.

The reports  said that the bill, sponsored by Imo lawmaker, Ikenga Ugochinyere was passed for second reading at the lower legislative chamber on Thursday.

If the bill scales through legislative scrutiny and is signed into law, the majority of the 2027 presidential hopefuls, including President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, will be missing.

This is because they are all over 60 years.

Titled A Bill for an Act to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to review the requirements that qualify a person to be elected as President and Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Governors and Deputy Governor of a State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for Related Matters, was one of the 31 proposed legislations which scaled second reading during Thursdays plenary session.

The bill provides that A person shall be qualified for election to the office of the President if he has been educated up to at least university level and has earned a Bachelors degree in his chosen field of study.

Section 131 of the Principal Act is amended by inserting a paragraph which reads, That he is not more than 60 years at the time of vying for the Office of President.

Section 177(d) of the principal Act is amended by altering the educational requirement that qualifies persons to be elected as governor as follows:

A person shall be qualified for election to the Office of the President if he has been educated up to at least university level and has earned a Bachelors degree in his chosen field of study.

That he is not more than 60 years old at the time of vying for the office of Governor.

While the bill was spontaneously accepted by Nigerian youths, who feel they have been marginalized for years, others rejected the move.

On May 31, 2018, the then Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari signed the Not-Too-Young-To-Run Bill into law, signalling hope for the younger generation, who may be vying for any political office.

The law reduces the age qualification for the office of Nigerian President from 40 to 35; state governor from 35 to 30; senator from 35 to 30 Federal House of Representatives and State House of Assembly membership from 30 to 25.

However, the majority of the elective positions across the country are still occupied by older politicians, fueling the move to enact law that would retire them and pave the way for younger politicians.

Some respondents, who spoke with our correspondent on the age limit bill, expressed divergent opinions on the matter.

Mr. Osita Okechukwu, former Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, VON, and one of the founding brothers of the All Progressives Congress, APC, said  rather that the age limit bill, Nigeria needs a clinical electoral reform system.

In  chat with  Osita, he opined that “age is a non-issue as per our national predicament. Rather the issue is the bandit mindset, whereby we all behave like bandits in all spheres of our life.

“Otherwise, how come we’ve cult members in junior secondary schools? Is it different from we the corrupt old men, whom they refer to as failed generations?

“All we need is a clinical electoral reform system as expressly recommended in the Uwais Report of 2008”.

The APC chieftain appealed to President Bola Tinubu, State Governors and members of the National and State Assemblies to muster the political will to deepen our democracy and catapult Nigeria to giant status; by amending the constitutional nomination process of INEC and SIEC executives as recommended by Uwais Report interalia.

“Advertise all positions, spelling out requisite Qualifications! Receive Applications/Nominations from the General Public; shortlist three Persons for each position and send to the National Council of State to select one from the Shortlist and forward to the Senate for Confirmation.

“My submission is that it is only the truly independent INEC and SIEC which will ensure the highest quality and the highest standard of our general elections”, he added.

The 54-year-old presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, in the last election, Omoyele Sowore has also rejected the bill, stating that such discrimination wont stand in Nigerian law.

In a chat with  Sowore, he  expressed pessimism about the progression of the bill, saying it may not see the light of day.

According to Sowore, “I am pretty sure the proposal won’t see the light of the day, I just think these legislators are trying to divert attention away from the scandalous role and the bribery saga involving the rivers state emergency rule.

“Any form of discrimination can’t stand in law, if it is based on age it is known as ageism. The fact that it is generally attractive doesn’t make it acceptable”.

In his own view, Terzulum Ukpanya, a former candidate of the Labour Party for the Gboko/Tarka Federal constituency in Benue State said Nigeria may remain underdeveloped if the older politicians remain in power.

He said, ”It is only when the Nigerian youths take back their country from these failed old politicians that things will be better.

“The only thing they know is how to acquire wealth for their unborn grandchildren. They have no vision for the country, they only plan for their pockets and that is why we keep seeing these unnecessary fights between them.

“It is so bad that when they get into power, they will want to plant their boys, who will be fraudulently remitting government money go them. This thing has been going on for ages and that is why we are where we are today.

“Their selfish interests have widened the gap between the rich and the poor because they keep acquiring wealth at the expense of the poor people.

“The president of France is just 47 years old. Go there and see what he is doing there. If President Tinubu falls sick today, he will go to a country where a 47-year-old boy is ruling. This is shameful.

“The age limit bill is a very good one but then, even if it is passed, who will sign it? It won’t go anywhere”.

Deputy Speaker Kalu sympathises with Onitsha Main Market fire victims

Hon. Benjamin Kalu

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, has expressed sympathy for the victims who lost their valuables in the fire at the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State.

He commended the fire service agency and individuals who made efforts to put off the inferno and urged the traders and residents to adhere to safety regulations and precautionary measures to prevent future occurrences.

The Deputy Speaker, who expressed relief that no life was lost, called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant agencies to immediately provide relief materials for victims to cushion the impact of the incident.

Lagos carpenter on trial for alleged N120,000 fraud

A 48-year-old carpenter, Tunji Aminu, is currently facing prosecution at the Magistrates Court in Ikorodu, Lagos, over allegations of fraudulently obtaining N120,000 from a client under false pretenses.

According to police prosecutor, Adegesin Famuyiwa, the incident occurred on May 29, 2024, at No. 13 Popoola Street, Agric, Ikorodu. Aminu allegedly received the sum from his client, Adebayo Johnson, as payment to construct a set of chairs but failed to deliver on the agreement, instead converting the money for personal use.

The prosecution stated that Aminu is being charged with stealing by conversion and obtaining money under false pretenses, offenses that contravene Sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Aminu, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Following his plea, the court granted him bail set at N50,000, with two sureties required in like sum.

The case has been adjourned to May 24 for further proceedings.

I was offered N5bn bribe to impeach Fubara –Rivers Chief of Staff

Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has alleged that he was offered N5 billion to coordinate the impeachment of his principal.

Speaking on Channels Televisions Sunday Politics, Ehie claimed he has evidence of the bribe offer stored on his phone.

“I can also open my phone to show you, in the beginning of October 2023, when they approached me with a bribe of N5 billion. It is here in my phone,

“It was for impeachment. Its here. I have it and I have printed it and distributed it, in case, in their evil imagination, they decide to attack me. I already have a son and a brother”, he said.

Ehie said the offer was made while he was serving as the majority leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The Chief of Staff also denied claims that he orchestrated the October 30, 2023, bombing of the Rivers Assembly complex on Fubaras orders.

The allegation was made by a former Head of Service in the state, George Nwaeke, during a press conference last Friday.

Nwaeke had alleged that he witnessed a bag of money being handed over to Ehie at the Government House to execute the operation, though he admitted he did not know the amount inside.

Dismissing the claims as false and politically motivated, Ehie said, “It is very important to clarify that I had no hand and was not part of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“Like everyone else, I woke up in the early hours of 30th of October 2023 to hear of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly”.

Ehie stated that he had instructed his lawyers to file a lawsuit against Nwaeke for criminal libel.

“I will not join issues completely with Mr. George Nwaeke because I have already instructed my lawyers to file an issue of criminal libel against him, and I hope he is very prepared to substantiate his claims and his allegations”, he said.

He further alleged that Nwaeke had sought financial assistance from him on the same day he resigned as head of service.

Rivers State has been in turmoil since Fubara’s fallout with his predecessor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.

On March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state and suspended both the governor and his deputy.

Subsequently, on March 26, the sole administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, suspended all political office holders in the state.

Fubara’s chief of staff sues ex-Rivers HoS for defamation, denies burning Rivers Assembly

Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has taken legal action against former Rivers State Head of Service, George Nwaeke, over allegations of arson and defamation.

Ehie denied any involvement in the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, which occurred on October 30, 2023.

During an interview on Channels Televisions Sunday Politics, Ehie dismissed Nwaeke’s claims as baseless and defamatory, stating that he had no knowledge of the arson until he heard the news like everyone else.

“It is very important to clarify that I was not, I had no hand, and was not part of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly”, Ehie asserted.

He further revealed that he had instructed his legal team to pursue a case of criminal libel against Nwaeke, challenging him to provide proof of his allegations.

“I will not join issues completely with Mr. George Nwaeke because I have already instructed my lawyers to file an issue of criminal libel against him, and I hope he is very prepared to substantiate his claims and his allegations”, he added.

Nwaeke had accused both Governor Fubara and Ehie of orchestrating the fire that gutted the state assembly complex amid a heated political crisis. The allegations have since sparked tensions within Rivers State’s political landscape.

Ehie’s legal action signals an effort to clear his name and hold Nwaeke accountable for what he describes as false and damaging accusations.

Three Lagos Assembly workers apologize to DSS for assault

Three officials of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LSHA) have tendered formal apologies to the Department of State Services (DSS) after being arrested for assaulting DSS operatives during the recent leadership crisis at the legislative house.

The Assembly had requested DSS presence through a letter dated February 14, 2025, signed by Acting Clerk A.T.B. Ottun. The letter, with reference number LSHA/FAD/0/7554/323, specifically asked the DSS to secure the facility from February 15 until further notice.

However, upon arrival, DSS personnel were reportedly attacked by three Assembly workers. Relying on CCTV footage, the security agency arrested the suspects and subsequently filed charges against them.

In separate letters of apology dated March 28, 2025, the arrested officials Ibrahim Abdul-Akeem Olarenwaju (Public Affairs Officer), Miss Adetola Fatimoh Oluwatosin, and Adetu Samshudeen Adekunle (both officers with the Sergeant-at-Arms unit) expressed regret for their actions.

The apologies, addressed to DSS Director General, Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, were routed through the State Director of Security, Lagos State Command.

One of the letters read: I, Ibrahim Abdul-Akeem Olarenwaju, hereby tender my unreserved apology for any act or omission that I might have caused your distinguished office and personnel in the course of my duty at the hallowed chamber of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Alausa, on the 27th day of February, 2025.

The other assembly workers echoed similar sentiments, pledging to conduct themselves appropriately in the future and avoid any actions that could undermine DSS personnel.

During the leadership crisis at the Assembly, several media outlets had initially published reports claiming that DSS operatives invaded the legislative complex. However, upon reviewing the facts, many media organizations retracted their reports and issued apologies to the DSS.

This development highlighted the importance of accurate reporting and the need for professionalism in handling security-related matters at public institutions.

Edo Killings: Aggrieved youths, women demand speedy justice for victims

Aggrieved youths and women yesterday took to the streets in Bunkure Local Government Area, carrying placards to demand speedy justice for the 16 northern travelers killed in Uromi, Edo State.

The protesters displayed placards with inscriptions such as: Hunters are not criminals,

Police rescue 21 kidnapped victims, recover N4.8m ransom, arms, ammunition

In a decisive crackdown on kidnapping and violent crime, the Nigeria Police Force has rescued 21 kidnapped victims, recovered N4.8 million in ransom money, and seized firearms and ammunition in recent operations across the country. The efforts, part of an intensified nationwide security strategy, also led to the arrest of six individuals involved in heinous crimes.

One of the most significant breakthroughs occurred in Taraba State, where police operatives, in collaboration with other security agencies, rescued 20 kidnapped victims along the Takum/Mararaba road on March 29, 2025. The rescue operation was launched in response to a kidnapping incident at Muji Town. A fierce gun battle ensued, forcing the kidnappers to abandon their captives and flee.

Two victims who sustained injuries during the ordeal are currently receiving medical care. The police also recovered all vehicles left behind at the scene.

In a separate operation in Kano State, a meticulous police investigation led to the rescue of Dr. Muhammad Bello Yushau, who was kidnapped on March 8, 2025. Following technical surveillance, operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Squad apprehended Tukur Lawal, also known as Maikudi, along with Ado Usman, Sanusi Surajo, Habiba Shuaibu, and Ummulkhairi Ibrahim on March 18 and 19, 2025.

During the arrests, the police recovered a locally made rifle and N4,840,000 in cash, believed to be ransom money. Dr. Yushau was rescued unhurt and reunited with his family.

Additionally, in another operation, operatives from the Special Tactical Squad (STS) arrested Kafinta Musa from Taraba State for his involvement in armed robbery, kidnapping, and illegal firearms possession. During his capture, the police seized an AK49 rifle loaded with five rounds of live ammunition. Investigations are ongoing to track down the remaining members of his criminal syndicate.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commended the officers involved in these successful operations for their bravery and professionalism. He emphasized the importance of continued public cooperation in providing timely intelligence to help combat crime.

These operations underscore the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to dismantle criminal networks and ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians.

For further updates, the police encourage citizens to report suspicious activities and support ongoing security efforts nationwide.

Tension as Diri opposes rally organised for Wike in Bayelsa

There is palpable tension in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital as the crisis rocking the national echelons of the People Democratic Party (PDP) and that of Rivers State is gradually moving to Bayelsa State.

The rally scheduled for FCT Minister and Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has been opposed by the Governor of the State, Sen. Douye Diri.

There has been growing tension between George Turnah, the South-South Secretary of the party and an ally to the Wike and Bayelsa State chapter of the party, which led to Turnah’s suspension.

The NEW associates led my Turnah, a literary acronym named Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. The political movement scheduled an event on Saturday (Today) in Yenagoa.

However, Diri publicly opposed the event, citing security concerns.

During a state security meeting, the governor raised an alarm about what he described as ‘a plot to breach the peace of the state.’

Diri, who warned that the state government would not condone any act that would disrupt the peace of the state, advised security commanders, youths, elders and traditional rulers to be on the alert.

He warned that the planned mega rally and inauguration of the group loyal to Wike was capable of igniting avoidable crisis in the state.

Diri noted that Turnah was suspended because he had been enlisted to create factions in Bayelsa PDP.

The governor also stated that holding such event at a time the political crisis in Rivers State had heightened ethnic tensions and could degenerate into conflict in the state.

He further stated that the alarm was imperative given that the FCT Minister had threatened to cause crisis in PDP-governed states in the country.

He said: “Any attempt to import the Rivers State political crisis into Bayelsa will be resisted.

“I urge security commanders in the state to be on the alert. Parents and traditional rulers should discourage their wards and children from being used by unscrupulous elements to cause trouble in the state.”

Diri, who insisted that the peaceful disposition of the Ijaws should not be misconstrued for cowardice, said the state would not allow a faceless group to foment trouble in Bayelsa, which is the homeland of all Ijaw people.

“As you are aware, we have threats from our sister state. The political crisis there is threatening us and we will not allow what is happening there to come into Bayelsa State.

“We had in our party a renegade, who has decided to form a parallel PDP in Bayelsa State, working with an ex-governor.

“The party in our state suspended him for gross misconduct and for now he is not a member of our party in Bayelsa State.

“He was a part of the kangaroo PDP South South zonal congress that was rejected by the National Working Committee of our party and he is threatening the peace of this state.”

GOV UZODIMMA

“May this Eid bring joy, renewed faith, and abundant blessings to every home.”

Rivers bombings, Assembly burning: Confusion as Fubara, ex-HOS trade claims

Suspended governor of Rivers State, Siminalyi Fubara, yesterday, engaged in a war of words with the immediate past Head of Service, HOS, Dr. George Nweke, over the bombing of pipelines in the state and burning of the House of Assembly Complex.

The development, which created confusion over the true story of the incidents that happened in the state, added another twist to the complex political crisis in Rivers.

In 2023, in the early stages of the current impasse, suspected political thugs burnt down the chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The arsonists had carried out the act at about 9:45pm, causing uneasy calm around the Assembly complex.

On March 18, 2025, an explosion also rocked a section of the Trans Niger Pipeline in Bodo Community in Gonna Local Government Area of Rivers State, heightening the already tense political situation in the state. The incident occurred near the Bodo-Bonny Road under construction. Unlike in the past when militant groups claimed responsibility for such incidents, none took ownership of the two.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had sent five Port Harcourt-based men to Kuje Prison for burning down the complex.

The men were arraigned by the Federal Government on terrorism charges.

However, the issues have taken another dimension with the claim by Nweke, who resigned a few days ago as HOS that Fubara ordered both incidents.

He alleged that the suspended governor sponsored the recent explosions that occurred in some oil facilities in the state.

Nweke vows to provide evidence of misappropriation by Fubara to security operatives.

Nweke also alleged that Fubara also masterminded the burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex to stop his impeachment by the house.

Nweke, who said this in Abuja, appreciated Fubara for appointing him to serve in his administration, saying his aim in addressing the press was to put the record straight.

He said: “With loads of misinformation on print and electronic media, I have chosen to put the record straight, I was not sacked neither was I pressured to resign, I did it willingly from the depth of my heart, however, as an insider and a key player in this administration by my position, who worked closely with Siminilayi Fubara, it will be unfair for me to keep silent or not to address some key factors that have affected or will affect our state if we continue on this trajectory.

“I want to use this medium to thank Mr. President for a swift intervention in Rivers State crisis, especially on the state of emergency that was declared and assented to by the National Assembly.

“You will recall that when the governor was suspended, as the Head of Service I was the next in command so I am not speaking from outside. I am speaking as an insider. If not for the intervention of Mr. President, Nigeria would have faced the worst economic sabotage and Rivers State would have been in flames.”

Nweke alleged that Fubara had in the wake of the crisis in the state, directed his suspended Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, to burn down the Assembly complex to avert his seeming impeachment.

He also said the governor had also made some advancement to bring down the residential quarters of the state lawmakers, adding that the governor wasted state funds to massage his ego.

Nweke said: “It all started with the Rivers State House of Assembly where Governor Siminilayi Fubara directed his Chief of Staff (Edison Ehie) to burn down the Assembly to avert his impeachment. Edison was in Government House with two other boys, including the former Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, and one Chijioke. I was there with them when a bag of money was handed over to Edison for the operation. I did not know the amount inside.

“I want to tell Rivers people today that the House of Assembly complex in Moscow Road was brought down by Edison Ehie under the instructions of Governor Siminilayi Fubara, I challenge him to an open confrontation and I will throw more light on it. A day after that incident, I almost resigned but I was very scared because I knew the power of a sitting governor and he knew that I was aware of the whole plan and that I was discomforted with the unconscionable act and deliberate posture of innocence and mien of a sheep.

“Another attempt was also made to destroy the residential quarters of the House of Assembly members if not for the press conference that was made by Rivers youths, Rivers elders and National Assembly members, that would have been another barbaric demolition in Rivers State.

“I came to realize that they wanted to demolish that second building because, after some weeks, he told me that if he had known early he would have gone to pull down their hall before visiting the residential quarters of the Assembly and that he didn’t know that they had such a beautiful hall where they are using now for their sitting, I was shocked and I asked myself how could a man who wants to lead his people be destroying his state assets and wasting public funds on a needless ego fight.

“While I thank Mr. President for the state of emergency that was declared in Rivers State, I will plead with him not to give up on Rivers State affairs because a lot is going on there with Governor Fubara. One of the factors that got me removed was when Governor Fubara told me they would use the Ijaw to decide who would become the next President of Nigeria and I asked him how will that work. Is it by votes or by what means?

“He told me that he is the chief security officer of Rivers State and his brother is in charge of Bayelsa State and all the pipelines are under their care that at the appropriate time, they will tell the boys what to do and the fund was not an issue. That was why when he made that statement in his public function that “I will tell the boys what to do at the appropriate time” I knew something was up and perhaps the time was near.

Nweke said: “The plan was to start from non-Ijaw speaking areas to destroy oil facilities to remove attention from the Ijaw and make it have a statewide look. The Ogoni, Oyibo, Ahoda areas were to be bombed first before the Ijaw zones. This would have brought down the government of President Tinubu and usher in a new President from the coalition of political parties with a Vice President from the Ijaw.’’

Nweke is lying, he is compromised —Fubara

Meanwhile, Fubara has dismissed Nweke’s claims, stating that he, Nweke, has been compromised to lie against him.

Fubara disclosed this in a statement he signed in Port Harcourt and urged the public to disregard him.

He said: “Ordinarily, I would not have responded to his claims, but to correct the erroneous impression such allegations may create in the minds of the people, and the disaffection it is bound to cause in the state and the country.

“First, on the claim that he was aware of my discussions and plans to support Bala Mohammed’s alleged 2027 presidential bid, it is laughable that Dr. Nwaeke would be part of any high-level political meeting as Head of Service, much more sitting in my alleged night meetings with Bala Mohammed and militants as he claimed.

Howbeit, none of such meetings were ever held.

“The truth is that the whole world knew when the Bauchi State Governor, as Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum visited the state, and there was nothing secret about the visits.

“It is also ludicrous for Dr. Nwaeke to claim that he was aware of my meetings to encourage attacks on oil pipelines and other national assets in the state, as there was no time I held any meeting with militants or any criminal group to destabilise the state. It is on record that I have been at the forefront of preaching peace in the state even in the face of obvious provocations.

“The truth is that Dr. Nwaeke has been compromised, and whatever he is saying is only aimed at fulfilling his promise to those who may have paid or coerced him to lie against me.

“I call on all well-meaning Nigerians and the good people of Rivers State to disregard everything said by Dr. Nwaeke as they are mere desperate attempts to discredit me and my administration, and undermine the peace process by Mr. President.”

He was abducted, not the husband I know —Nweke’s wife

Nonetheless, the matter has become more dramatic as Florence Nweke, wife of the former HOS, said her husband was abducted.

She raised concerns about her husband’s safety and whereabouts following his sudden public appearance in Anuja.

Florence revealed that her husband had informed her of his safe arrival in Abuja after travelling from Rivers State. However, she was later shocked to see him participating in an interview where he made allegations against the governor.

According to her, the man in the interview did not seem to be the husband she knew, sparking fears that he might be acting under duress.

“I have tried reaching him several times, but his lines have been unreachable. I don’t know where he is or if he is safe. My husband is in trouble,” she cried out.

2027: Wike’s good works will give APC victory in FCT  —  Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu yesterday commended Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, for the infrastructural transformation, expressing the hope that such good performance will give victory to the All Progressives Congress, APC, especially in the FCT in 2027.

President Tinubu belongs to the ruling APC, while Wike is officially known as a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The President spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja when Wike led a delegation of prominent FCT residents on a traditional sallah homage to mark end of Ramadan fasting and Eid-el-Fitr holiday.

In his remarks, the President described the FCT Minister as ‘Mr. Infrastructure’ and listed some of the various initiatives and projects executed by the Minister, stressing that they have translated to better lives for Abuja residents, for which he remains grateful to the Minister.

President Tinubu, who did not hide his appreciation on the calibre of persons in the delegation, said: “I could see the diversity of men and women here, I must thank the Honorable Minister of FCT. It’s worth it.

“⁣It is nothing other than a privilege to be the landlord of every one of us in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.

“And when we started, he came up with a lot of good ideas to liberate the bureaucracy, bring forward-looking, progressive thinking to the administration, and giving the opportunity to many of you that would have still been hindered by property rights. ⁣

“The independent Civil Service Commission solution and all of that that we discussed give opportunity for upward mobility and promotions that is consistent with the civil service structure, the Area Councils structure, and the indiscriminate development in the face of dwindling resources.

“I remember the day Nyesom Wike came to me and said ‘please, take us out of this problem of Treasury Single Account (TSA), so that I can do more work, and I achieve more’.⁣ Then I said, ‘okay, tell me what you’re about to do’.

“And he presented it, and I threw in my own political guide: ‘Would that give me any opportunity for my party (APC) to win the election in FCT?’⁣ I said ‘I know where you are coming from, your own party (PDP) or my party. If this thing goes too much in your own favour, you will lose your job.’ Then he said, ‘okay, we settle that, Oga.’⁣

“And things started changing rapidly, and I started looking at the opening up of the rural areas, of abandoned projects, and the residence of the Vice- President that has been abandoned for years came alive.

“The health centers are being rehabilitated. The health facilities of the residents of FCT are being upgraded. Our teachers at schools are being rehabilitated, buildings are furnished. Thank you Wike.⁣”

Continuing, Tinubu said: “We wouldn’t have been able to open our mouths to even celebrate, if not, because of the progressive ideas you have given. Today, we are living in peace and security is improving. There is satisfaction in our output. The hunger is coming down. Food prices lowering. We are able to go to the market and do business.

“Our people are looking for results. They are looking for comfort. They are praying for good health. They are looking for a fairer, somebody with the heart. It is not about me, it’s about every one of us, and the diversity of Nigeria is being proved by NyesomWike.

“Strengthen that diversity to develop prosperity, seeing that we are all members of one family living together in the same house but we are staying in different rooms. We belong to one family of hope and belief in Nigeria. ⁣

“I thank all of you for believing in that. For the cooperation collaboration, and believing in thee positive idea that we can live in peace and harmony with one another, regardless of ethnic, religious diversity and faith. I thank you.⁣”

The President further stated: “Surprisingly, Nyesom Wike is not from the North. He’s not an Hausa man. He’s from the southern part of Nigeria, and his ability to work in the centre of the Northern part of Nigeria is yielding fruits. That is a very good reflection of our diversity that we must use for our prosperity.

“l’m just a custodian of your trust. It’s only Almighty Allah that gives power. And he says, ‘if I give it to you, you must use it in the righteous way. You must be humane. You must follow my teachings. And do great things. To show that, I granted you that privilege as a temporary article of faith, and I’m the only one who can take it away from you if you don’t know how to use it.”

Fielding questions from State House correspondents after the visit, Wike expressed joy that the President described him as Mr. Infrastructure, saying: “I feel very happy that my boss has confidence in me. If your boss, in the public, says that you are doing well, that, of course, is an encouragement for you to continue doing the job that you’ve been assigned.

“For us, we’re happy to be identified in this administration and we’ll continue to do what Abuja people will be happy with. So I’m happy each time Mr. President talks about us and tries to say the little we have done, that means that he’s watching and we will not disappoint him.”

The lawmakers emphasized the need for the agency to ensure that its raids do not inadvertently affect legitimate pharmaceutical businesses operating within the law.

The decision of the House followed the adoption of a motion moved by the member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Anambra State, Afam Ogene at a plenary session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

He said, The House is aware that NAFDAC recently sealed medicine markets in Idumota, Lagos State, Ariaria in Aba, Abia State and Onitsha in Anambra state.

We are aware of the ongoing enforcement operations by NAFDAC in these drug markets as a necessary step to eliminate counterfeit and substandard medicines from the country.

However, we are deeply concerned about reports from affected traders who claim that the crackdown has indiscriminately disrupted businesses, including those of legitimate operators.

This blanket approach has reportedly led to significant financial losses and the destruction of goods for many innocent individuals.

Ogene expressed concern over reports that NAFDAC sealed the affected markets, barring traders and their leadership from entering. Meanwhile, its officials allegedly broke into shops and confiscated pharmaceuticals without allowing the shop owners to be present or take inventory.

Describing the approach as brazen, Ogene criticized the unilateral break-in and seizure of goods, arguing that excluding market leaders and shop owners from the process undermines accountability and casts doubt on the integrity of the operation.

According to him, Some traders and Point of Sale operators were forced to leave significant amounts of cash in their shops during the sudden raid and closure of the markets over the weekend, with no clear means of recovering their funds, leading to frustrations and bewilderment.

In its sole resolution, the House directed its Committee on NAFDAC to Investigate these concerns, to ensure that livelihoods of innocent vendors engaged in legitimate businesses in the affected markets are not unfairly impacted.

27-yr-old kidnapper bags 60 years imprisonment in Ibadan

Court

A Federal High Court in Ibadan, on Thursday, sentenced a 27-year-old kidnapper, Umar Babangida, to 60 years imprisonment.

The convict, found guilty of three charges bordering on kidnapping and cybercrime (ransom demand), each with a 20-year jail term, will, however, run the sentence concurrently.

Justice N. E. Maha said Babangida was convicted and sentenced based on the evidence tendered against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).

She said DSS was able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the convict was a kidnapper through his confession in the video clip and other pieces of evidence against him.

She, however, discharged Babangida of the charges of unlawful possession of firearms and conspiracy for want of evidence.

“Therefore, Babangida is sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in Agodi for each of counts one, three and five, respectively.

“Sentencing shall, however, run concurrently,” Maha held.

The prosecution counsel, Mr T. A. Nurudeen, had earlier told the court that the convict committed the crime on June 14, 15 and 16, 2024, in the Akinyele area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

Nurudeen said Babangida, a resident of Sabongida area of Jeba, Kwara, along with others, kidnapped two people and immediately initiated ransom negotiations with the victims’ relatives using the victims’ phone numbers.

The prosecutor said the convict was apprehended after due intelligence report on the kidnapping.

Tanker Fires: FG Bans 60,000 Litres Capacity Trucks From Lifting Petroleum Products …45,000 litres vehicles to follow by Q4

The federal government has banned fuel tankers with a 60,000 litres capacity from loading and transporting petroleum products from the various depots across the country, effective from March 1, 2025.

Also, by the fourth quarter of 2025, the transportation of petroleum in trucks exceeding 45,000 litres will also be prohibited.

This move comes after a series of tragic tanker explosions, which have claimed numerous lives and caused significant property damage. In a meeting held on Wednesday with key industry stakeholders, the NMDPRA outlined these measures as the first step in tackling the ongoing safety crisis.

Chief executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) Farouk Ahmed, who announced the ban, said this is part of the measures taken by the federal government to curtail the incidences of tanker explosions and fires in the country, following a series of tragic explosions that have claimed numerous lives.

Recall that in January 2025 alone, over 100 lives were lost in tanker-related accidents. The most devastating incident occurred on January 18 when a petrol tanker exploded at Dikko junction along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway in Niger State, resulting in the deaths of at least 98 people. The explosion happened when local residents attempted to scoop fuel from the overturned tanker after an accident. The resulting fire left dozens of people severely burned.

A week later, another explosion occurred along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, killing 11 individuals. In this case, a tanker suffered brake failure, toppled, and leaked fuel, which ignited and caused a deadly blaze.

Available data revealed that nearly 493 fatalities have occurred from tanker-related incidents over the past three years, with 121 deaths already reported in just the first two months of 2025 alone.

Ahmed, who was represented by executive director, Distribution, Systems, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure, Ogbugo Ukoha, during a news briefing in Abuja, on Wednesday, also said the ban will extend the loading or transportation of petroleum products on any truck in excess of 45,000 litres by the fourth quarter of 2025.

“The breaking news from today today’s meeting comprising DSS, FEMA, Federal Fire Service, Road Safety, NATO, NUPENG, MEMAN, PETROAN, IPMAN, DAPMAN, SON, ONSA, is that beginning 1st March, any truck with an axle load that is carrying more than 60,000 litres of hydrocarbon will not be allowed to load at any loading depot.

“Let me repeat that again. Beginning 1st March, trucks with a capacity in excess of 60,000 litres will not be allowed to load in any loading depot for petroleum products.

“By Q4 of 2025, we will also preclude the loading or transportation of petroleum products on any truck in excess of 45,000 litres. So that is the breaking news for today.

“This is just one out of ten measures that stakeholders have agreed that need to be addressed if we want to mitigate the high level of trucks in transit accidents.

“The important thing about this is that for the first time consensus was built amongst all stakeholders and we are continuing to encourage that we work together cohesively to deliver a safe transportation of petroleum products across the country, “ Ahmed said.

The NMDPRA also confirmed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has not imported the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) petrol this year.

The confirmation came over the news reports that the state-owned oil firm imported PMS burns faster than that of Dangote Refinery.

The NMDPRA said all the petroleum products imported to the country this year are of standard quality.

It recalled after the removal of subsidy on petrol, national consumption of the product declined from an average of 66 million litre (ml/d) to 50 ml/d.

According to him, less than 60 per cent of the national consumption is met from domestic refineries while the shortfall is imported by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

He explained that the contribution of local refineries has been less than a 60 per cent shortfall in January and February 2025.

The executive director said 50 per cent of the shortfall is sourced from importation.

He however specifically noted that none of the OMCs that owned refineries have imported petroleum products this year.

“So just for clarity, what I am saying is that the contribution of local refining towards the sufficiency is less than 60 per cent currently. January and February 2025 is less than 50 of what we require daily. And that shortfall is sourced by way of importation. Even though none of the OMCs that owned refineries have imported PMS this year.”

On quality, he said the NMDPRA always insists that all petroleum products meet the specifications of the Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) and the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

According to him, the Authority does not permit the distribution of products that fall short of quality standards.

“You must meet those specifications, otherwise we will not let those products be distributed,” he said.

He said some people have been releasing bogus claims concerning product quality on social media.

He said, “Finally, let me just say a word about what the responsibility we all bear. The regulator will usually be more circumspect and not run, chase, or respond to every comment that is made by the public.

”But it is important that people who dabble within the social media space are reminded that it is disrespectful if you imagine that Nigerians are gullible.

“Innocent Nigerians are discerning enough to know that energies need to be directed positively. So people who make unscientific claims, that make bogus data expertise claims of that, are really not helping the situation.

“As a regulator, we are working very hard in compliance with the presidential and statutory mandates we have to support the local refineries to build capacity to the point that Nigerians will have sufficient products and not just quality but pricing is also done in a transparent, competitive and fair way.”

Rowdy senate session as senator Natasha protests seat change …Akpabio Intervenes to Prevent Suspension

The Senate descended into a rowdy and dramatic session during plenary after a heated exchange between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) over the unauthorized relocation of her seat.

The commotion nearly disrupted proceedings, with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan refusing to comply with the seat change, citing Order 10 of the Senate Standing Rules, which protects members’ privileges.

Trouble started when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan entered the chamber and discovered her nameplate missing from her usual seat. Outraged, she raised her voice in protest, demanding an explanation.

As the plenary commenced, Senate Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno North), raised a point of order, alerting Akpabio to what he described as Natasha’s “improper seating position.”

Before Monguno could conclude his statement, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan forcefully interrupted, demanding to know why her seat was changed without her consent, leading to a heated back-and-forth.

As voices rose and tempers flared, Akpabio ordered the Sergeant-at-Arms to escort her out of the chamber, warning that she could face suspension if she refused to remain silent.

“Can the Sergeant-at-Arms please take her out of the Senate?” Akpabio ordered.

Her microphone was switched off as security personnel attempted to remove her, but she resisted, raising her voice even louder.

Sensing the situation escalating, some senators intervened, urging calm. Senators from Kogi State, led by Senator Isah Jibrin (APC, Kogi East), pleaded for understanding, while Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) and others attempted to de-escalate tensions.

Reacting to the disruption, Akpabio likened the situation to South Africa’s Parliament, where opposition leader Julius Malema frequently faces calls to “sit down.”

Recalling a similar incident during his time in the 8th Senate, Akpabio noted that he too had protested a seat reassignment but had handled it without public confrontation.

“In the 8th Senate, my seat was changed without prior notice. I voiced my displeasure, but the matter was resolved internally,” he said.

He further suggested reverting to the old microphone system to prevent senators from speaking out of turn, sarcastically apologizing “on behalf of the contractor” for the issue.

As the session progressed, Senator Isah Jibrin cited Order 42 (personal explanations), apologizing on behalf of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and attributing the seat change to recent resignations and reassignments.

Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West) defended the seat reallocation process, criticizing Natasha’s reaction as unnecessary.

“When she came in, we extended an arm of friendship to her, we loved her too much. I don’t know why she turned the place upside down,” he said, urging her to apologize.

In the end, Senator Akpabio intervened, offering Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan a soft landing.

“Senator Karimi, I can see that you are very hurt. I just want to appeal to you to temper justice with mercy,” he said.

Emphasizing that seat reallocation is routine and governed by the Senate’s Standing Orders, Akpabio clarified that senators must speak from assigned seats but that changes are at the Senate President’s discretion.

“I want the public to understand that our proceedings are governed by rules and the Constitution,” he concluded.

How I Challenged Babangida, Told Him He Failed To Make History – Tinubu

The President also hailed the former head of state for his contributions to national building, narrating how Babangida inspired him to in politics.

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday recalled how he once challenged the former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, and told him that he failed to make history.

Babangida, former military dictator, ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993. He is renowned for annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential election believed by many to be won by the late businessman, Moshood Abiola.

Babangida was Nigeria’s leader when Tinubu was elected to the Senate to represent Lagos West in 1992.

Speaking at a book launch in honour of Babaginda, Tinubu recalled how he confronted Babangida for always postponing their inauguration after winning election.

He said that he feared he would be imprisoned for confronting the then head of state.

“I confronted you that you had an opportunity to make history that day and you failed to do it. Why not inaugurate us? Why are you calling us back and postponing the inauguration?

“They thought I would end up in jail. You came out right at the end of the remark, you shook me. I can’t forget that,” Tinubu said amid applause from the crowd.

The President also hailed the former head of state for his contributions to national building, narrating how Babangida inspired him in politics.

“Without you, people like me won’t be in politics. Your progressive revolution to say that you want young, brilliant people in politics, you inspire some of us,” Tinubu said.

In his remarks, Babangida shared an insight as to why he annulled the June 12 presidential election.

32 years after the election, Babangida said he acted to protect the country’s interest.

APGA will retain control of Anambra in November election – Spokesman …Says party is the most stable in Nigeria

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has expressed confidence in its ability to retain control of Anambra State in the November 8, 2025 governorship election, describing itself as the most stable political party in Nigeria.

In an exclusive interview with newsmen, Ejimofor-Opara, the National Publicity Secretary of APGA, highlighted the party’s ideological commitment to fostering a progressive society and emphasized its 18 years of uninterrupted leadership in Anambra State.

Ejimofor-Opara pointed to significant achievements in education, health, and agriculture, citing the employment of 5,000 qualified teachers within the first five months of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration as an example of APGA’s commitment to development.

“Anambra has been on a steady course of development under APGA’s leadership. If the election were held tomorrow, we are prepared,” he stated, dismissing APC’s claims of being capable of taking over the state.

He described APGA as a people-centered party, emphasizing that its governance prioritizes both infrastructure development and the welfare of the people.

Speaking on the upcoming election, Ejimofor-Opara dismissed the APC’s ambitions in Anambra, asserting that APGA’s internal stability and intact membership would ensure its continued dominance.

“Talk is cheap. APGA’s house is in order, and our membership remains intact. Anambra voters have seen the tangible benefits of our leadership, and they are in high spirits to support us again,” he said.

Ejimofor-Opara reiterated APGA’s call for true federalism, advocating for a system where states control their resources and determine their internal governance.

“APGA calls for a federalism where the federating units are empowered to decide and manage what works best for them. Beyond infrastructure, we focus on people’s welfare, which reflects our motto: ‘Be your brother’s and sister’s keeper.’”

He argued that granting states control over their resources and policing would lead to greater development and address insecurity more effectively.

Addressing perceptions that APGA is limited to the Southeast, Ejimofor-Opara highlighted the party’s national footprint, citing its representation in Benue, Bayelsa, and Niger States.

“It’s incorrect to say APGA is confined to the Southeast. We’ve had federal legislators in other regions, and we continue to expand our national influence”, he explained.

Ejimofor-Opara acknowledged past leadership crises but emphasized that APGA remains ideologically driven and has emerged stronger from its challenges.

“Every leadership challenge we face makes us better. We are the only political party formed within the same period that is still standing strong today,” he added.

On the petroleum industry, Ejimofor-Opara expressed optimism that fuel prices would decrease as competition increases and more refineries become operational, likening the process to the early days of GSM technology.

He also commended the tax bill before the National Assembly, describing it as a laudable initiative if implemented properly, while calling for improved human capital development and better data management.
