At least 22 killed, 120 injured as protesters storm US consulate in Pakistan

At least 22 people were killed and more than 120 injured on Sunday during violent clashes between protesters and security forces in Pakistan, as demonstrators attempted to storm the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, according to agency reports.

The unrest was reported in the southern port city of Karachi as well as in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region, where thousands of protesters took to the streets following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Police and hospital officials in Karachi said dozens of injured people were brought in for treatment, with some reported to be in critical condition.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, local police official Asghar Ali said 12 people were killed and more than 80 wounded after protesters clashed with security forces and attacked offices linked to the United Nations and government institutions.

Government spokesman, Shabir Mir said U.N. staff were safe and that troops had been deployed to restore order.

Pakistan’s President, Asif Ali Zardari, expressed “profound sorrow” over the reported death of Iran’s Supreme Leader and extended condolences to Iran, according to a statement from his office.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan said it was monitoring reports of demonstrations at its diplomatic missions in Karachi and Lahore, as well as planned protests in Islamabad and Peshawar.

Authorities said the situation was being brought under control as security forces increased their presence in affected areas.

Forex reserves hit $34.8bn in December 2025 – CBN

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, has said Nigeria’s net foreign exchange reserves rose sharply to $34.80bn at the end of 2025, signalling what he described as a significant strengthening in the country’s external buffers.

In a press statement issued by the CBN on Monday, the apex bank said the improvement in both gross and net reserves reflected “stronger external sector fundamentals and sustained policy reforms.”

Cardoso had earlier disclosed at the post-Monetary Policy Committee briefing on February 24, 2026, that Nigeria’s gross external reserves stood at $50.45bn as of February 16, 2026.

Providing further clarity over the weekend, he said the net foreign exchange reserves as at the end of December 2025 rose to $34.80bn.

The statement read, “The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr Olayemi Cardoso, has stated that Nigeria’s gross and net foreign reserves showed significant improvement at the end of 2025, reflecting stronger external sector fundamentals and sustained policy reforms.

“Following his disclosure at the post-Monetary Policy Committee press briefing on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, where he said the country’s gross external reserves stood at $50.45bn as of February 16, 2026, Mr Cardoso, at the weekend, said the net foreign exchange reserves, as at the end of December 2025, rose to $34.80bn.”

According to the CBN governor, the figures emphasised the benefits of increased transparency and credibility in foreign exchange management, boosting investor confidence, attracting stronger FX inflows, and improving reserve management practices aimed at preserving capital, ensuring liquidity, and supporting long-term sustainability.

He noted in the statement that the improvement represents “a substantial strengthening in both the level and quality of Nigeria’s external buffers over the past three years.”

The statement disclosed that net reserves increased sharply from $3.99bn at the end of 2023 to $34.80bn at the close of 2025, which the governor described as a fundamental improvement in reserve quality.

He added that the 2025 net reserve position alone exceeded the total gross reserves recorded at the end of 2023, which stood at $33.22bn.

Cardoso further stated that net reserves rose from $23.11bn at the end of 2024 to $34.80bn at the end of 2025.

Over the same period, gross external reserves increased to $45.71bn from $40.19bn, representing a rise of $5.52bn.

He said the expansion highlighted Nigeria’s enhanced capacity “to meet external obligations, support exchange rate stability and reinforce overall macroeconomic resilience.”

Describing the end-2025 reserve position as a strong validation of the bank’s ongoing reforms and external sector adjustments, Cardoso reaffirmed the commitment of the Central Bank of Nigeria to maintaining adequate reserve buffers.

He stated that the apex bank would continue “supporting orderly foreign exchange market operations, enhancing confidence in Nigeria’s external position and sustaining macroeconomic stability in line with its statutory mandate.”

It was earlier reported that the CBN governor disclosed that Nigeria’s gross external reserves hit the highest level in 13 years by mid-February 2026.

Speaking during the Monetary Policy Committee briefing in Abuja last week, Cardoso said the reserve build-up was supported by favourable trade developments, a healthy current account surplus, rising non-oil exports and increased diaspora remittances.

He attributed the gains to improved market confidence.

“Underpinning all this, quite frankly, is market confidence. Without market confidence, no matter what you do, you’ll find you will significantly sub-optimise,” Cardoso stated.

He added that the CBN had engaged widely with international investors, made commitments and ensured policy consistency to engender positive market sentiment.

2027: Wike set to work for Tinubu again, says PDP hasn’t learnt

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has said he will again work for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027, insisting that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), appears not to have learnt from past political decisions.

Wike made the remarks yesterday during a media parley in Abuja, where he defended his continued support for Tinubu and candidates aligned with the President.

According to him, his position was neither new nor unexpected, noting that he had publicly declared his support before the 2023 general election.

“I told you in 2023 that even as a PDP man, I was going to work for the President. That is what I did because I believe, and rightly so, that the other parties did not present serious candidates,” Wike said.

The minister maintained that his political stance remains unchanged ahead of the next election cycle.

“My position has not changed,” he said, adding that the PDP did not consult him when selecting its candidates.

“As a minister, my party did not consult me on the candidates they were going to present,” Wike stated.

He further explained that his political support would cut across party lines, as long as the candidates involved are working towards Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

“I said I would support candidates who support Mr President for his re-election. It does not matter which party they belong to. If they support Mr President, then of course I will pitch my tent with them,” he said.

Wike also took a swipe at the opposition, insisting that his party had failed to reflect on previous political outcomes.

According to him, the PDP “appeared not to have learnt”, stressing that his continued alignment with the President is driven by what he described as the quality of leadership and political choices available.

El-Rufai’s wife denies ICPC wiretap claims

Hadiza Isma, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has dismissed allegations by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) that wiretapping devices were discovered during a search of their residence.

In a post shared on X, Hadiza Isma stated, “I was there. No such equipment was found. They lie. But why? An agency with no credibility at all.”

The ICPC had earlier claimed that suspected surveillance devices, capable of intercepting confidential communications and accessing classified security materials, were recovered during a raid on El-Rufai’s Abuja home.

Reacting to the allegations, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, son of Nasir El-Rufai and member representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, described the claims as false and politically motivated.

In a statement titled “ICPC’s Phantom Phone Tapping Equipment Allegations Against Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai and the Constitutional Right to Silence,” the family accused the ICPC of conducting a “circus of chicanery” rather than following proper legal procedures.

The statement highlighted several points:

Right to Silence: The ICPC allegedly attempted to portray El-Rufai’s exercise of his constitutional right to remain silent as “non-cooperation,” which the family described as a misinterpretation of Nigerian law.

No Tapping Equipment Found: According to the family, only old personal mobile phones, laptops, and storage devices were seized—items commonly owned by any household. They claimed the alleged sophisticated tapping equipment never existed.

Alleged Forged Warrant: The family further accused the ICPC of executing the search based on a defective and possibly forged warrant, which they say undermines the legitimacy of the operation.

Credibility Concerns: The statement criticized the ICPC for allegedly manufacturing evidence and engaging in unprofessional conduct, asserting that the agency has a “credibility deficit” and is acting under external influence.

Mohammed Bello El-Rufai concluded that the family has instructed lawyers to pursue all legal remedies to challenge the search, the alleged forged warrant, and the ICPC’s statements, expressing confidence that the judiciary will uphold their rights.

The El-Rufai family’s response underscores rising tensions between political figures and anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria, as legal and procedural disputes continue to dominate public discourse.

Police Council confirm IGP Olatunji Disu’s appointment

The Police Council, comprising President Bola Tinubu, the governors of the 36 states of the federation, FCT Minister have unanimously endorsed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the confirmation after the Council’s meeting at the State House, Abuja, which lasted about 40 minutes.
The meeting, which commenced at about 2:15 pm when Tinubu arrived at the Council, is in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which requires the Police Council to consider the appointment.
The closed-door session was convened to affirm Disu’s nomination, following the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Disu was appointed last week in an acting capacity and was promoted to the rank of IGP. He was an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, before his elevation and has about two months to retire.
Sources had indicated that upon the Council’s endorsement, the President will transmit the appointment to the Senate for confirmation in line with constitutional and statutory provisions.
But there is a school of thought that has said that the appointment of the IGP does not require Senate confirmation.
Among those that attended the high-level meeting were Vice President Kashim Shettima; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, many state governors, alongside other statutory members of the Council.
The Nigeria Police Council is chaired by the President and comprised the governors of the 36 states of the federation, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police.
Established as a critical advisory organ under the Police Act 2020, the Council played a strategic oversight role on key policing matters.
Its responsibilities include advising the President on internal security policy, police administration, budgeting, and senior appointments and promotions within the Force.
While it does not interfere in the day-to-day operational activities of the police, the Council ensured that due process is followed in major institutional decisions, particularly appointments to the office of the Inspector-General of Police.
Monday’s meeting came at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with multifaceted security challenges, underscoring the importance of stable leadership at the helm of the nation’s policing architecture.

Dead voters on register – INEC orders nationwide verification exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission , (INEC), has identified the inclusion of deceased individuals on the current voters’ register, prompting plans for a nationwide verification exercise.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made this known yesterday during the Commission’s first quarterly consultative meeting with Civil Society Organisations, (CSOs).

According to Amupitan, the review became necessary after analysing figures from the Anambra State off-cycle governorship election held in November, which revealed a sharp contrast between the number of registered voters and those who actually cast ballots.

“When we look at the voters register for Anambra State during the off cycle elections in November, we discovered that the number of registered voters stood at over 2.9 million, but only about 600 came out to vote.

“This is just about 20 percent of the registered voters. So, we decided to take another look at the register and we discovered names of prominent Nigerian politicians who have died still on the register.”

“That impacts on the integrity of the register and we have to do a clean up because we don’t expect the dead to come from the grave to vote”.

According to the commission, the verification process is required for sanitising the database and rebuilding public confidence in the electoral process.

The INEC chairman said the findings have raised serious questions about the reliability of the register currently being deployed for elections across the country.

He stressed that credible elections cannot be achieved without an accurate and up-to-date voters’ register, noting that the presence of ineligible names undermines confidence in the democratic process.

Amupitan disclosed that the planned verification exercise would focus on removing the names of deceased persons, correcting data errors, and working with relevant government agencies to authenticate records.

He added that the clean-up exercise is part of broader efforts by the Commission to improve electoral credibility and ensure that only eligible Nigerians are captured on the voters’ register.

IPOB sit-at-home order records low compliance in Imo

The sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) had minimal effect on activities across Imo State on Monday, as markets, schools, and public institutions operated normally.

Residents, traders, and students were seen moving freely, while commercial buses plied major routes and conveyed passengers to their destinations without disruption.

Students attended classes until the close of school for the day, and civil servants were present at their duty posts across the state.

Some residents, who spoke with our reporter, said they were surprised by the sit-at-home order, noting that they were not aware of any directive restricting movement.

A trader, Chidima, said, “I came out for business in Owerri because there’s enough security in the capital city. More importantly, I came out to look for my daily bread, and people in town were moving freely because stores and shops were open without any fear of molestation.”

JAMB to give free UTME forms to PWDs

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said it would give free application documents to persons with disabilities registering for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

The Board said this in a bulletin shared by its Public Communication Advisor, Dr Fabian Benjamin on Monday in Abuja.

Registration for the examination started on January 26 and will end on 28 of this month.

So far, the Board has raked in N2,206,319,000.00 from the sales of UTME e-Pins.

It noted that as done in previous years, the free application documents are to be processed by the JAMB-equal Opportunity Group(JEOG) for candidates with disabilities, who wish to sit the 2026/2027 UTME.

The Board explained that the free UTME documents were part of efforts aimed at giving equal opportunities to all categories of candidates with disabilities, who are desirous of pursuing their dreams of higher education.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, during a meeting with critical stakeholders of the Board at the National Headquarters, Abuja, restated the Board’s commitment to the welfare of PWDs through its free application documents regime.

Northern leaders pledge support for peace in South-East, South-South

The Northern Traditional Rulers Council for the South-South and South-East Regions has pledged its support to the security agencies and state governments in tackling security challenges across the regions.

The chairman of the council, Yaro Danladi, disclosed this on Sunday during a press briefing on the resolutions reached at the council’s two-day emergency meeting in Umuahia.

Mr Danladi, who is also the leader of the Hausa community in Abia, said the council resolved that northern communities would work closely with state governors, host communities, and security agencies to promote peace and harmony.

“We agreed to work hand-in-hand with our governors and live peacefully with the indigenous people of our host states,” he said.

Mr Danladi further explained that the meeting was convened in response to emerging security concerns in the region, adding that the council also resolved to assist security agencies with timely intelligence.

In Abia, he said that representatives would be appointed in the 17 LGAs to ensure the prompt flow of vital information to security authorities.

“Once any incident occurs, information will reach me within minutes, and I will immediately contact the commissioner of police, the DSS or the state security adviser,” he said.

He affirmed the northern leaders’ commitment to supporting State Governments’ fight against crime and criminality, adding that criminal elements in their midst would not be shielded.

“We do not support criminals, and anyone involved in crime will be arrested and handed over to law enforcement agencies for prosecution,” Danladi said.

He urged the youths of northern communities in the regions to respect the laws of their host states and live in peace with their neighbours.

He also called on the various state governments to collaborate with northern leaders to identify and integrate residents, noting that many northerners had lived peacefully in the region for generations.

“Some of our people have been here since the 1940s. We have intermarried and lived as one family, and we want that relationship to continue,” he said.

Also, the leader of the Hausa community in Enugu, Abubakar Sambo, reiterated the council’s resolve to strengthen peace, security, cooperation, and welfare in the two regions.

Mr Sambo, who is also the national vice-chairman of the Inter-tribal Traditional Leaders Association of Nigeria, expressed the council’s desire to improve relations with host communities and consolidate the peaceful coexistence in the regions.

“We discussed ways to improve our peaceful coexistence with the good people of the South-East and South-South, and how to support the state governments. We discussed the area of intelligence gathering, especially as it concerns security within northern communities,” he said.

He said that they also resolved to establish a coordinated structure for northern communities in each state to enhance rapid information sharing and engagement.

“As part of our resolutions, we will structure the northern communities in every state, down to the LGAs and communities where they reside, including artisans, scrap dealers and other groups,” he said.

Malami challenges EFCC, asks court to set aside interim forfeiture order on property

Former Justice Minister Abubakar Malami (SAN) has prayed the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to vacate the interim order made against three of the 57 properties listed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for forfeiture to the federal government.

Mr Malami, former attorney general of the federation (AGF) of the Muhammadu Buhari administration, is challenging the EFCC over the properties listed as Nos. 9, 18, and 48 in the ex parte motion it brought to the court on January 6.

The three properties sought to be discharged include Plot 157, Lamido Crescent, Nasarawa, GRA, Kano, purchased on July 31, 2019, with no specific amount stated in the schedule as No. 9; a duplex and Boys Quarters at No. 12, Yalinga Street, Off Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse Il, Abuja, purchased in October 2018 at N150 million; and ADC Kadi Malami Foundation Building, bought at N56 million, listed as No. 18 and No. 48.

Justice Emeka Nwite, who sat as a vacation judge, had, on January 6, ordered the temporary forfeiture of 57 properties suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities linked to Mr Malami.

Mr Nwite had granted the order following an ex parte motion moved by the EFCC’s lawyer, Ekele Iheanacho (SAN), to that effect.

The judge then directed the commission to publish the order in a national daily, inviting interested persons to show cause within 14 days why all the property should not be permanently forfeited to the federal government.

The multibillion-naira landed properties are located in Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, and Kaduna States.

However, in a motion on notice filed on Mr Malami’s behalf by a team of lawyers led by Joseph Daudu (SAN), the former AGF alleged that the anti-corruption agency got the interim order by suppression of material facts and misrepresentation.

Mr Malami, who urged the court to dismiss the suit to prevent “conflicting outcomes and duplicative litigation,” argued that the proceeding was an assault on his fundamental right to own property, his presumption of innocence and his right to live in peace with his family.

In the application dated January 26 but filed January 27 by Mr Daudu, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/20/2026, Mr Malami sought two orders:

“An order of this honourable court vacating, setting aside, and/or discharging the interim order(s) of this honourable court made on the 6th of January, 2026, against the respondent/applicant’s (Malami’s) properties listed as Nos. 9, 18, and 48 in the schedule of properties attached to the interim order of forfeiture of 6th January, 2026, the said properties having been duly declared in the respondent/applicant’s asset declaration forms throughout his tenure as a public officer, and No. 48 is held in trust for the estate of the late Khadi Malami Nassarawa.

“An order of this honourable court restraining the applicant/respondent (EFCC), acting by itself or through its servants, agents and proxies, from interfering with the respondent/applicant’s (Malami’s) properties in issue or disturbing the respondent/applicant’s ownership, possession and control thereof in the course of purportedly giving effect to the order of this honourable court made on the 6th of January, 2026.”

In a 14-ground argument, Mr Daudu argued that the assets Nos. 9, 18, and 48, the subject of the interim forfeiture, especially those declared in the various asset declaration forms of Mr Malami, are not linked by prima facie evidence to any unlawful activity or specific offence.

He said Mr Malami had declared the assets listed as Nos. 9 and 18 in his asset declaration forms filed with the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) in 2019 and 2023, respectively.

He said property No. 48 is held in trust by the former AGF for the benefit of the estate of his late father, the late Kadi Malami.

NLC, TUC embark on solidarity rally with FCT workers today

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress say they will stage a peaceful solidarity rally on February 3 in support of the Joint Union Action Committee.

The unions announced this in a joint statement signed by Benson Upah, general secretary of the NLC, and Mr Nuhu Toro, Secretary General of the TUC, in Abuja.

The solidarity is in support of the strike by Federal Capital Development Authority workers, led by JUAC, over unpaid salaries.

Workers under JUAC commenced an indefinite strike on January 19, shutting down key administrative offices, including the FCTA Secretariat and the FCDA.

The strike followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued on January 7, demanding that the FCTA management address long-standing labour and welfare grievances.

According to the union, the rally is to reaffirm labour’s collective resolve that an injury to one worker remains an injury to all within the Nigerian labour movement.

“The action will send a clear message that labour will resist all forms of intimidation and injustice against workers,” they said.

The unions said the struggle was legitimate, non-negotiable and would be sustained until justice was achieved. They added that their support for JUAC members remained total and unwavering.

They urged JUAC members to remain steadfast, courageous and united in the defence of their rights.

The NLC and TUC said the planned rally was aimed at demonstrating collective resistance against injustice.

They added that the peaceful action would be directed to the FCDA, insisting the rally would be lawful and peaceful.

They directed all affiliates and state councils to mobilise members in large numbers for the rally, adding that intimidation and repression would not weaken workers’ resolve.

They reiterated that workers’ rights were never given but won through collective struggle.

The unions assured workers in the Federal Capital Territory that they would not be abandoned.

The FCT minister said despite the moves, his administration remained focused and committed to the people of Rivers State.

He said, “When I was governor, the administration of our late President Mohammadu Buhari was hell for me.

“A minister who is from here, tried to make sure we didn’t move forward but by the grace of God, we were focused and made more impacts.

“Governance is not just about awarding contracts, it is about relating with people. Anybody can award a contract but the capacity for you to settle issues and meander when there is a problem.”

At the hearing of the bail application, the EFCC had vehemently opposed any request to grant bail to the former Minister.

The Judge held that the interest of justice would be served if the former Minister is admitted to bail since the Constitution of the country presumes his innocence in spite of the economic crime charges.

We’ll intensify efforts to boost Nigeria’s oil production — CNS

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, has said the Nigerian Navy will intensify its efforts to ensure sustained growth in the country’s oil production.

Abbas made the disclosure yesterday during an inspection and operational tour of naval facilities in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

Speaking with journalists after commissioning projects at the Atimbo Barracks, including two newly completed junior rates permanent accommodation blocks, the naval chief said the visit was both operational and for inspection purposes.

He explained that beyond inspecting infrastructure, the tour was aimed at conducting an on the spot assessment of naval operations and addressing personnel welfare issues, which he described as critical to effective security delivery.

According to him, taking care of officers and ratings remains a priority, as motivated personnel are better positioned to secure the nation’s maritime domain.

The Chief of Naval Staff expressed satisfaction with the performance of the command, noting that from the briefings received and observations made, the Eastern Naval Command was effectively carrying out its mandate of keeping the maritime environment safe.

He assured that the Navy would sustain and further improve its maritime patrols and surveillance operations to protect Nigeria’s waterways and critical maritime assets.

Abbas added that enhanced patrol activities would help safeguard maritime resources and support increased oil production across the country.

During the visit, the naval chief also inspected the ongoing Navy Hotel and Suites project and visited the Headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command, where he held meetings with senior naval officers, commanders, officers and ratings of the Nigerian Navy.

PDP in crisis, can’t woo Peter Obi, says Obidient Movement

The Obidient Movement has dismissed moves by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to court former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, insisting that the party’s unresolved internal crisis weakens any attempt to lure him back ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The position was articulated by Dr. Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, who spoke to our correspondent yesterday in Abuja while reacting to reports of planned consultations by the PDP leadership.

Yunusa questioned both the logic and credibility of the outreach at a time the party is grappling with internal disputes.

“Well, they are making overture to him, but you know, the problem is that the party has issues at the moment now,” Yunusa said.

He argued that extending an invitation to a key political figure to return to a party facing internal challenges raises fundamental questions about coherence and direction.

“And so if you say you are making an overture for him to go back to where, where there’s problems, how do they fly that those are the issues. So you have to consider that, all right,” he added.

The reaction followed confirmation that a faction of the PDP is planning to reach out to both Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as part of efforts to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The planned consultations were disclosed by the PDP South-South Chairman, Emmanuel Ogidi, who spoke on the party’s ongoing engagements with influential political figures.

Ogidi said the outreach includes former Anambra State governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Peter Obi, alongside other prominent opposition actors.

While the PDP faction views the move as part of a broader strategy to rebuild and strengthen the opposition, Yunusa highlighted lingering concerns that internal instability could undermine such efforts and blunt the party’s appeal to high-profile political figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

ADC ticket: Atiku rejects call to step down, attacks Tinubu

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has ruled out stepping down in the race for the African Democratic Congress presidential ticket, while accusing President Bola Tinubu of alleged interference in the internal affairs of the opposition coalition.

Atiku, in a statement released on Tuesday by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, called on Nigerians to resist efforts by the All Progressives Congress to intimidate and weaken the opposition.

The former Vice President’s comments came amid speculation that he is facing pressure to step aside for a southern candidate to emerge as the ADC’s flagbearer in the upcoming election against President Bola Tinubu.

Recently, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, formally joined the ADC and there are reports Atiku may be planning a joint ticket with former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, to clinch the ADC ticket.

But while rejecting any call to step down from the presidential race, Atiku accused Tinubu of deliberately weakening the opposition parties in order to have a smooth sail in 2027.

He accused Tinubu of misgovernance, labelling his administration  a growing national liability.

He said, “For nearly three years, Nigerians have endured one of the harshest periods in recent history, an era defined by punishing economic policies and shrinking democratic space under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“True to form, this administration has not only inflicted widespread hardship but has pursued a calculated effort to eliminate political alternatives. The objective is clear: a creeping, de facto one-party state.

“Perhaps the Tinubu administration’s most disturbing achievement has been the systematic weakening of opposition parties, leaving the All Progressives Congress—despite its manifest failures—standing alone by default, not by merit. Thankfully, patriotic leaders saw this danger early and chose resistance over silence by rallying around the African Democratic Congress as the nucleus of a credible national alternative.

“Predictably, agents aligned with the Presidency are now attempting to destabilise the ADC from the outside, issuing reckless prescriptions about its internal affairs, particularly the choice of a presidential candidate.

“Let it be stated plainly: the ADC is on a national rescue mission. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside other committed patriots, is central to this effort. Any call—overt or covert—for Atiku to step aside is a gift to authoritarian ambition and a betrayal of the Nigerian people.”

He added that the ADC is committed to ending the alleged misfortunes brought about by the Tinubu-led APC, stressing that no form of intimidation, manipulation, or sabotage will derail this mission.

“The ADC has consistently affirmed its commitment to an open, transparent, and competitive process for selecting its flagbearer. APC proxies and external meddlers have no standing to intimidate, blackmail, or sabotage this democratic resolve.

“At present, the ADC is focused on building strong ward, local government, and state structures nationwide. Disruptors and infiltrators must allow the party to do this essential work without interference.

“The party remains open and welcoming to all genuine opposition figures. This inclusiveness—not coercion—is the soul of democracy. When the time comes, all qualified aspirants will present themselves freely. No one is stepping down. If anyone should step aside, it is President Tinubu—whose leadership has become a national liability.

“The recent public declaration of ADC membership by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in Enugu, the political heartbeat of the Southeast, triggered open boasts by a serving minister and presidential aides about plans to undermine the party. Their fear is evident.

“Let there be no ambiguity: the ADC is determined to end the misfortune imposed by the Tinubu-led APC. No amount of intimidation, intrigue, or sabotage will derail this rescue mission. Nigeria will not surrender its democracy without a fight.”

Aisha Yesufu appointed deputy chair ADC membership revalidation committee

Activist Aisha Yesufu has been appointed as deputy chairperson of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, membership revalidation committee.

The national chairman of the party, Senator David Mark, while inaugurating the 20-member committee yesterday, described the exercise as a major step toward repositioning the ADC for growth, unity, stronger cohesion and improved electoral competitiveness nationwide ahead.

The reports said  that the committee is chaired by Kashim Imam, with Dr Sekonte Davies serving as secretary.

Mark said the initiative underscored the party’s founding principles of justice, equity, accountability and people-centred governance, stressing that credible, verifiable membership data remained essential to legitimacy, relevance and national political success.

The former Senate President explained that the committee, created by the NWC, would oversee nationwide revalidation, fresh registrations, grassroots mobilisation, data harmonisation and deployment of electronic and manual platforms to ensure transparency and documentation.

He added that new membership cards with state-specific security features would be introduced, urging committee members to act with integrity, fairness and inclusiveness while collaborating with state and local leaders nationwide.

Accepting the assignment, committee chairman Kashim Imam, pledged diligent and transparent service, describing the exercise as a turning point aimed at rebuilding the ADC into an inclusive, people-driven movement nationwide.

Imam said the committee had 30 days to submit its report, assuring members that work had begun immediately to mobilise and register Nigerians across cities, rural communities, deserts and creeks nationwide.

Peter Obi’s ex-running mate, Baba-Ahmed declares presidential ambition

Former Vice-Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has formally declared interest in contesting the presidency in 2027 general elections.

Baba-Ahmed made the declaration at a rally held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

The declaration announcement is coming barely one week after Obi announced his departure from the Labour Party, LP, for the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

Speaking to party members and supporters, Baba-Ahmed said his aspiration was neither reactionary nor dependent on Obi’s political decisions, adding that his presidential ambition predates the 2023 election.

“I have made myself available to contest for the office in 2027. I’m not following anybody’s trajectory or stepping into anybody’s shoes.

“Can I please remind you that before His Excellency Governor Peter Obi filed for the presidency, I aspired for the presidency before him? The records are there for you to see,” he said.

US will control Venezuelan oil sales ‘indefinitely’ – Energy secretary

US Energy Secretary, Chris Wright said yesterday that Washington will control sales of Venezuelan oil “indefinitely,” a day after President Donald Trump announced Venezuela’s interim leaders had agreed to US-managed marketing of 30-50 million barrels of crude.

“We’re going to market the crude coming out of Venezuela, first this backed-up stored oil, and then indefinitely, going forward, we will sell the production that comes out of Venezuela into the marketplace,” Wright said at a Goldman Sachs energy event in Miami.

Days after the US toppling of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, which has left his deputy and other allies in charge, Wright suggested sanctions on the country’s oil sector would be waived to facilitate the export of its oil.

The United States would be “the supplier” of the diluting agents needed to get Venezuela’s extra-heavy crude oil ready for shipment, he said.

“As we make progress with the government, you know, we’ll enable the importing of parts and equipment and services to kind of prevent the industry from collapsing, stabilize the production, and then as quickly as possible, start to see it growing again.”

Wright, a former oil and gas executive, said it would require “tens of billions of dollars and significant time” to get Venezuela’s production back to historical highs of over three million barrels per day.

“But why not?” he questioned.

In the short-to-medium term, he said, several hundreds of thousands of additional barrels could be achieved “for just small capital deployment, spare parts, people try to revitalize some of the existing stuff.”

Venezuela claimed to sit on about a fifth of the world’s oil reserves, but observers pointed out that a quick ramp-up of output would be hamstrung by several issues including its creaking infrastructure, low prices and political uncertainty.

Trump said Tuesday that 30–50 million barrels of Venezuelan crude will be shipped to US ports, with the revenue — perhaps more than $2 billion at current market prices — placed under his personal control.

On Saturday, US special forces snatched Maduro and his wife from Caracas and whisked them to New York to face trial on drug charges.

It was not immediately clear whether Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodriguez had agreed to hand over the oil, how the plan would work, or what its legal basis would be.

“Think about where Venezuela was a week ago. You know, it’s a little different today, but everything else is the same way it was,” Wright said.

“So it is going to require this cooperation between — and pressure between — the United States and Venezuela.”

Plot to kill Ibrahim Traore foiled — Burkina Faso junta

The Burkina Faso military government has announced that a coup plot to assassinate its leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore has been foiled.

According to the security minister, Mahamadou Sana, in a late-night statement, explained that Lt Col Damiba, who was ousted by Traore in Sept 2022, masterminded the plot.

“Our intelligence services intercepted this operation in the final hours. They had planned to assassinate the head of state and then strike other key institutions, including civilian personalities,” said Mahamadou Sana, further alleging that the plot had been funded from neighbouring Ivory Coast.

However, neither Col Damiba nor Ivory Coast has commented on the matter, according to the BBC.

Since seizing power, Capt Traoré has faced at least two coup attempts and is also grappling with growing jihadist violence that has forced millions from their homes.

Despite these challenges and his authoritarian reputation, the 37-year-old military leader maintains strong popular support and has gained a following across the continent for his pan-Africanist vision and criticism of Western influence.

According to the security minister, a video was leaked by the authority where the plotters were discussing their plans.

In the footage, the individuals allegedly discussed plans to assassinate the president, either at close range or by planting explosives at his residence, scheduled for approximately 23:00 local time on Saturday, 3 January.

The BBC reported that the plot involved targeted assassinations of military and civilian officials.

Sana claimed Damiba got soldiers and civilians on board, secured foreign funding (including 70m CFA francs/$125,000 from Ivory Coast), and aimed to take out the country’s drone base before outside forces intervened.

“We are carrying out ongoing investigations and have made several arrests. These individuals will be brought to justice soon,” the minister said on national television.

However, Sana assured the situation is under control, urging citizens to remain vigilant and avoid being drawn into destabilizing activities.

However, the number of arrests made by the Traore-led junta is unclear.

Col Damiba, who led Burkina Faso from January to September 2022 after a coup, wished his successor well in a social media post after being removed from office.

Sana also said authorities would name only the main suspect for confidentiality reasons, identifying him as Damiba, whom he said was responsible for planning the operation, raising funds and recruiting both civilians and soldiers.

He added that soldiers involved in the plot were tasked with recruiting other troops and forming operational cells, while civilians were to mobilize supporters to back the takeover after the military action.

The minister said investigations and arrests were ongoing, and all those involved would face the prosecutor and the “full force of the law.”

2027: Labour Party not missing Peter Obi — Abure

Abure

The Julius Abure-led Labour Party (LP) yesterday dismissed insinuations that the defection of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) had affected the LP’s fortunes.

Rather, Abure claimed that the party remained intact and would grow stronger with Obi’s exit, noting that those who held such views had forgotten that the LP was already doing well on its own before Obi’s arrival in 2022.

Addressing party faithful during a rally held at its National headquarters in Abuja, he recalled that before Obi joined the LP, it had been “strategically-positioned” as a viable opposition party.

He added that the strength of the party at the time encouraged the former governor of Anambra State to register for membership.

“LP is intact, and people thought that when some people leave the party the party will die. But, no, we are stronger and we will continue to win elections”, Abure told the rally.

Abure acknowledged Obi’s contributions after he joined the party, but insisted that it would be wrong to agree with the narrative that without Obi’s influence, there would have been no LP.

He spoke further, “We had laundered the image of our party with several people of influence coming to us to say they want to join, some actually joined.

“Only recently, the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, told the world that he joined the party before Peter Obi did; this is true.

“He also said he was not going to defect with Peter Obi. On the night Peter Obi defected, I received a telephone call from our Vice-Presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed.

“He said he is not leaving the party because it was the platform upon which he, along with the former candidate, received 10 million votes from Nigerians, which was reduced to 6 million votes. We all know what happened.”

Baba-Ahmed, who also addressed the rally, assured the members that he remained a member of the LP and was ready to make himself available to serve Nigeria in 2027.

Although he did not officially declare that he would run for the presidency during the rally, Baba-Ahmed promised to make his intentions known when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the timetable for the 2027 polls.

However, findings by the Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday indicated that the party had positioned Baba-Ahmed to pick the presidential ticket for 2027.

Baba-Ahmed, while making a comparison between himself and Obi, said that, although he served as his running mate in 2023, he had long aspired to be president before Obi joined the race.

He explained, “I am my own boss. I contested for the presidency in 2019 before Peter Obi.

“I agreed to partner with Peter Obi in 2023 because I saw an opportunity to unite Nigerians, and I accepted it.

“I am a Nigerian and will make my decision known when the whistle is blown. Yes, I’m Nigerian, I am a Hausa man and Muslim. Bola Tinubu is a human being, and there are human beings in the Labour Party.”

Meanwhile, the LP promised free tickets for Nigerian youths willing to contest the 2027 polls on the party’s platform in line with its philosophy of social democracy.

“If you have capacity and character but you don’t have money, we will give you a ticket and campaign for you.

We did it in 2023.

“We are ready to do the same from now to 2027. We are going to mentor the youths and even give those who are good, free tickets,” Abure told the young people at the rally.

According to him, the party does not condone godfathers or allow anyone to dictate its affairs by imposing the personal interests of some individuals on members.

2027: Reps Deputy Speaker drums support for Tinubu, says Igbo must extend handshake to southwest

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has continued to drum up support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election, saying supporting the President for a second term bid was in the best interest of the Igbo nation.

Kalu, who spoke while taking the President’s New Year message to political leaders in Abia state, said the people of the southeast must extend a hand of fellowship to the southwest by investing their votes wisely so they can expect the dividends of democracy.

He said the people of Abia State and Ndi Igbo in general should invest in their political future by supporting President Tinubu.

The Deputy Speaker said, “One of the messages I would like to pass to the people of Olokoro, to the people of Abia State, and to the Ndi Igbo is that it’s about time we started investing our votes, not wasting our votes. So, this is Operation Invest Your Votes, Don’t Waste Your Votes.

“It is about time the Igbos began to buy shares in our democracy, so that we can ask for dividends; and you buy shares in democracy through the number of our votes. The currency with which we purchase dividends in our democracy is called votes. The number of votes determines the number of dividends.

“Let us sow, so that we can reap. And at the moment, the best fertile ground for us to sow, as we enter into 2027, is the one that is within the southern political corridor. At the moment, what is in the southern political corridor is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We should not make the mistake of fighting ourselves. Let us have a handshake today, so that tomorrow they will return it.

“So, this is the message of the new year that I want us to take because by the next New Year, it will be too late. Let us have that mindset, the clarion call now is let us have a handshake with the south west, so that when our own time comes, we will ask them to return the match. If we fail now, it will be difficult.

“I know Ndi Igbo, the same strategy we have used in our businesses, in our trading, if we can adopt into our politics, we will go far, and I’m urging you, Ndi Olokoro, to stand with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a man who rewards hard work and loyalty.”

Speaking while visiting a former member of the Abia state House of Assembly, Chukwudi Apugo, Kalu asked the former Abia lawmaker to formally join the APC, saying it will boost the support base of the party in the State.

“I want to use this opportunity as well; I know you are not politicking now because you are back to your business, to invite you to join me in my party, the APC. That is where your father is. He is one of the Board of Trustees, one of the founding fathers of APC.

“We can’t do it alone. So, I’m inviting you to this ancestral land and saying, come, let us honour your father in APC. Come, let us change the narrative. We are inviting people. Those who listen to us will come. Those who will not listen will stay back. But the train has started moving. Like you said, only those who are wise must get there. Let us do this together,” he said.

In his remarks, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC), in Abia state, Senator Chris Adighije expressed his appreciation for the visit, pledging the support of Olokoro Umuahia clan for the administration’s efforts to develop the country.

He said, “I am surprised, it really took me off guard. I’ve never been so taken before. Olokoro is made up of 17 autonomous communities; 16 of them are here; the overall President General of Olokoro is here.

“This message of goodwill from President Bola Tinubu has penetrated the entire Olokoro, and by the way, Olokoro is one of the three clans that make up Umuahia South. Olokoro has 4 large electoral wards. Ubakala, which is the other clan, has 3 wards. God has made it possible for you to come and visit me.

“Last time, we got it wrong, and we should not repeat the same mistake. The only thing I will say to you is thank you very much, God will bless you, and He will prolong your life.”

Similarly, the former Abia State House of Assembly member, Hon. Chukwudi Apugo, commended Kalu’s legislative efforts, saying the federal lawmaker has impacted the people of Abia State and Ndi Igbo in general, especially through the South East Development Commission Bill, which led to the establishment of the Commission.

He also pledged support for Kalu, encouraging him not to be deterred by any circumstances.

“You have done well as a person. You have done well. I’m not saying it because you are here. If you are not doing well, I will say it. You have empowered a lot of people. I watch you on television everyday and I see what you do. Perhaps, we wouldn’t have benefited if you were not from Abia State. That is the truth. You are highly respected in Nigeria. You are amongst the Igbo speaking for the region. Don’t be deterred. Continue with your good works.

“You have changed the narratives in Abia’s political landscape by galvanizing old and new politicians, paying courtesy visits to them. That is the right thing to do. I want to assure you of my support anytime, any day. You are doing well. You have attracted appointments for our people. We will follow you because you are on the right track,” Apugo said.

Leave Otti alone, focus on your legislative mandate, Abia group replies Uzor Kalu

A political pressure group known as Abia Patriots, has fired back at a former Governor and the Senator representing Abia North, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, over his recent outburst that the support of Goveror Alex Otti was not needed for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu; and the All Progressives Congress, APC, to win election in Abia.

Kalu boasted that he was enough to deliver the APC without Gov. Otti’s help.

Senator Kalu in a statement via his Media Aide, George Maduka, criticized Governor Otti for “overestimating his political relevance”, claiming that key stakeholders had to intervene to rally support for him during the 2023 governorship election.

The former Governor questioned Otti’s claims of political strengthen, recalling his alleged visit to Senator Kalu’s residence in Igbere on the eve of the election, as well as interactions between Otti’s campaign team and Senator Kalu.

But Abia Patriots, in a swift response, expressed disappointment over the comments credited to the former Governor, cautioning him against distracting Gov. Otti.

The group in a statement by its Secretary, Mazi Adindu Madumere, expressed shock at Kalu’s sudden support for President Tinubu after allegedly working against his presidential bid in 2023.

“We’re amazed at Senator Kalu’s bootlicking politics, given his public rejection of APC’s presidential candidate in 2023, when he deliberately voided his vote. So, what has changed?”

“The Abia Patriots is shocked and disappointed by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s recent comments, aimed at distracting Governor Alex Otti from his developmental agenda. We urge APC stalwarts to refrain from turning Abia into a theatre of political battles, when other states prioritize socio-economic development.”

The group advised Senator Kalu to focus on his legislative mandate of quality representation to Abia North, and stop heating up the Abia polity.

“We advise Senator Kalu to focus on representing Abia North effectively, initiating laws that benefit indigenes. As a former two-term governor, he should prioritize Abia’s development as a patriotic statesman, not a party opportunist.

“Abians are tired of meaningless rhetoric; they deserve peace, progress, and development. The time to support the present government is now.”

Tax laws: Don’t agonise Nigerian workers, NLC tells FG

…Gives FG ultimatum to review workers’ wages before 2027

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has accused the Federal Government of deliberately excluding Nigerian workers from the formulation and implementation of the new tax laws, warning that policies crafted without labour’s input were inflicting hardship and deepening poverty.

Ajaero faulted what he described as the government’s contradiction of shutting out workers from meaningful engagement on tax reforms, only to later accuse them of “agonising” over national economic policies they neither designed nor influenced.

He made the remarks yesterday in Abuja at the 85th birthday celebration and public presentation of the memoir of a former President of the NLC, Comrade Hassan Sunmonu, titled ‘Organise, Don’t Agonise’.

Speaking in line with the central philosophy of the book, Ajaero said sidelining the organised voice of labour amounted to designing policies on “shaky and exclusionary foundations,” inevitably leading to social crisis and economic agony, as currently being experienced across the country.

According to him, organised labour had repeatedly drawn the government’s attention to fundamental shortcomings in the new tax laws but was ignored, noting that any tax regime that imposed heavier burdens on workers and the poor could not be described as progressive.

He stressed that if the government was determined to proceed with the implementation of the new tax laws, it must equally demonstrate readiness to improve workers’ welfare, particularly through an upward review of wages ahead of the next statutory National Minimum Wage negotiations scheduled for 2027.

“It is from this standpoint that we must speak directly to the Nigerian Government,” Ajaero said.

“The philosophy of Organise, Don’t Agonise also implies that the state has a duty to engage, not enrage. There is an urgent need for deeper, more sincere, and structured engagement with the trade union movement at all levels.”

He insisted that policies ranging from fuel pricing to taxation, wages and social services must be developed with the active and respected participation of those who represent workers and the broader masses.

“Policies, from fuel pricing to taxation, from wages to social services, must be crafted with the active, respected input of those who represent the workers and the broader masses,” he said.

“To sideline the organised voice of labour is to design policies on shaky, exclusionary foundations, destined to generate crisis and agony as is being witnessed currently.”

Ajaero described the new tax laws as a “poignant example” of the failure of government to engage stakeholders and adhere to due process, alleging that Nigerian workers and the masses, who constitute the largest group of taxpayers, were deliberately excluded from the Presidential Committee on Tax.

“From the Presidential Committee on Tax, which Nigerian workers were deliberately excluded from, we knew that the workers and masses were going to be on the menu,” he said. “We said so and alerted the nation. Even during the legislative processes, we warned of the dangers, but no one listened.”

According to him, the outcome of that exclusion was now evident in laws that made workers and the poor worse off.

“Today, the result is clear; laws with serious alterations directed at making workers and the poor poorer have become the outcome,” Ajaero said.

“A tax law that imposes heavy burdens on workers and the poor is not progressive. A tax law that taxes the national minimum wage is not fair. Taxing the masses who are living in excruciating poverty is regressive.”

He maintained that organised labour saw nothing wrong in suspending the current approach to the tax reforms to allow for proper reconsideration and redirection.

Ajaero also used the platform to demand the immediate and full constitution of the board of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), while calling for clarity and restraint in the implementation of the tax laws.

“We demand, as Comrade Sunmonu would have, that the Federal Government immediately and fully constitute the PENCOM Board and address the concerns of Nigerians regarding the tax law, instead of the present grandstanding,” he said.

“Insisting on going ahead is akin to muddling along in confusion and darkness, since we do not even know which version of the law is truly operational.”

He warned that persisting on the current path posed serious risks to tax administration and Nigeria’s democratic stability.

“This dangerous pattern seriously undermines the tax administration itself and indeed our democracy,” he said.

Concluding, the NLC president called on the Federal Government to draw lessons from Sunmonu’s legacy by shifting from policies that inflict hardship to inclusive governance that prioritises economic justice.

“Let this celebration of a life spent organising inspire a new chapter,” Ajaero said.

“Let the government move from agonising the people to organising with them. Let us build a democracy that delivers not just political freedom but economic liberation, where the wealth of the nation serves the welfare of its people.

“It is on this note that we once again call on the Federal Government to urgently address the wages of Nigerian workers before the next statutory negotiation of the National Minimum Wage.”

Nwifuru approves establishment of army training depot in Ebonyi

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has approved the establishment of a Nigerian Army Training Depot (NATD) in Amasiri community, Afikpo North Local Government Area, as part of efforts to tackle security challenges in the state.

The announcement was made when the governor received a senior delegation of the Nigerian Army, led by Major General Oluremi Fadairo, General Officer Commanding, 82 Division, alongside stakeholders and traditional rulers from Afikpo.

“Our discussions focused on strengthening security collaboration and advancing strategic development in Ebonyi State,” Nwifuru said.

“This milestone complements other strategic federal investments in Ebonyi State, including the ongoing construction of the Nigerian Navy School in Oferekpe Agbaja, reinforcing our state’s position as a destination for national institutions,” Nwifuru said.

Abia leaders pledge support for Tinubu, say Ndigbo will correct past mistakes in 2027

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has received assurances from Abia State leaders that the Igbo will correct past electoral mistakes in 2027 and rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Kalu received the pledges during a New Year courtesy visit to Senator Chris Adighije, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State on Tuesday evening.

Senator Adighije expressed gratitude for the visit, pledging support from the Olokoro Umuahia clan for the Tinubu administration’s development agenda.

He said, “I am surprised; it really took me off guard. Olokoro comprises 17 autonomous communities, 16 of which are represented here today. The message of goodwill from President Tinubu has penetrated the entire Olokoro. Last time, we got it wrong, and we should not repeat the same mistake. God has made it possible for you to visit, and for that, we are grateful.”

In his remarks, Deputy Speaker Kalu urged Abians and Ndi Igbo in general to invest in their political future by supporting President Tinubu.

He stated, “It’s time we started investing our votes, not wasting them. The currency with which we purchase dividends in our democracy is votes. As we approach 2027, the southern political corridor presents fertile ground, and currently, that is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We should not fight among ourselves but extend a handshake today, so that tomorrow it can be reciprocated. If we adopt the same strategy we use in business for our politics, we will go far.”

In a separate New Year visit, former Abia State House of Assembly member Hon. Chukwudi Apugo commended Kalu’s legislative efforts, particularly his role in the South East Development Commission Bill, which led to the establishment of the Commission. He pledged his support and encouraged Kalu to continue his work.

“You have empowered many people. You are highly respected in Nigeria and among the Igbo. Continue your good works; we will follow you because you are on the right track,” Apugo said.

Kalu also urged Apugo to formally join the APC, highlighting that it would strengthen the party’s base in Abia State.

He said, “We invite you to join the APC, the party where your father serves as a Board of Trustees member and one of the founding fathers. Let us honour his legacy and change the political narrative together. The train has started moving; those who are wise will join us.”

Rivers crisis: Ijaw group asks Tinubu to redeploy Wike to Niger Delta Ministry

Ahead of the 2027 general election, a Niger Delta group, the Ijaw National Congress, West Africa Chapter, has asked President Bola Tinubu to redeploy Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, to the Ministry of the Niger Delta.

The Ijaw group made the request in a pre-action notice contained in a letter addressed to President Tinubu, and made available to journalists yesterday.

The letter, dated January 6, 2026, is signed by Rev. Dr. Perry Aperela, Chairman, INC West African Chapter.

In the letter titled, ‘Pre-action notice requesting redeployment/transfer of the Minister of the FCT Nyesom Wike from the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the Ministry of Niger Delta’, the group said the minister needs to be closer to Rivers State due to his continuous campaign activities in the state ahead of the 2027 election.

“This serves as a formal pre-action notice to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, demanding the redeployment/transfer of Nyesom Wike from the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to the Ministry of the Niger Delta.

“The reason for this request is that Nyesom Wike needs to be closer to Rivers State due to his continuous campaigning activities ahead of the 2027 elections in Rivers State. He has been traveling from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to Rivers State every weekend in recent times, which clearly indicates that his political engagements are more centered in the Niger Delta region.

“In view of this, it is only appropriate and administratively reasonable that he be redeployed/transferred to the Ministry of the Niger Delta to align his ministerial responsibilities with his political activities and regional proximity,” the letter read.

The minister has, in recent days, held series of political engagements with different stakeholders in Rivers State, where he vowed total support for President Tinubu amid renewed hostilities with the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Wike’s alleged opposition to Fubara’s second term bid has led to a face-off between him and All Progressives Congress, APC, National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, who advised him to resign his appointment as minister and face the politics of Rivers State.

Wike had warned Basiru against interfering in Rivers politics, stressing that he will get his hands burnt if he persists.

Adeleke no longer interested in PDP gov ticket — Party

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State has said Governor Ademola Adeleke may no longer be interested in seeking the nomination of the party for the 2026 governorship election.

The party, however, said Adeleke’s decision may change with the resolution of crises ravaging the party, which must be recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission and reached within the commission’s timeline for the Osun governorship poll.

Addressing journalists in Osogbo, the state capital, yesterday, Osun PDP Chairman, Mr. Sunday Bisi, said the crises ravaging the party have made the conduct of the party’s governorship primary earlier slated for December 2 impossible.

Bisi affirmed that Adeleke fully complied with all requirements set out in the PDP’s timetable for nomination, adding that he

“purchased and submitted the expression of interest and nomination forms within the stipulated window of October 13th to 25th, 2025, being the deadline for submission.”

He further explained that Adeleke appeared before the duly constituted screening committee of the party on October 30, was screened, and cleared without reservations, with the Certificate of Clearance issued to him in accordance with the party’s procedures.

“However, soon after these pre-primary processes were concluded, the internal imbroglio rocking the national leadership of our party escalated.

“The suspension and counter-suspension of key national officers, officers who are statutorily central to the conduct of congresses, primaries, and the transmission of our candidate’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), created a level of uncertainty that directly impacted the planned schedule.

“This crisis reached a point where the statutory ad-hoc ward and local government congresses, scheduled for November 24th and 29th respectively, could not hold.

“These are the very congresses where delegates to the primaries are elected. As you are all aware, the issues leading to these disruptions are presently before various courts across the country,” Bisi said.

He added, “In the light of the foregoing, it has become inevitable, indeed unavoidable, that the PDP governorship primaries earlier slated for Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, can no longer hold as scheduled.

“However, because of the internal crisis rocking the national leadership of our party, the information at my disposal is that Governor Ademola Adeleke may no longer be interested in seeking the nomination of the PDP for the 2026 Osun Gubernatorial Election, except a resolution recognised by INEC is reached within the INEC timeline.”

The reports had it  that the crises ravaging the PDP at the national level have polarised the party into factions.

According to the timetable released by INEC detailing activities towards the August 8 Osun governorship poll, parties fielding candidates have till December 15 to submit the names of their candidates.
