Imo State government, through the office of the First Lady and the State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has collaborated with the Federal Government, under the Renewed Hope Initiative, and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, to organize a two-day seminar and training on Agricultural Support programmes for Secondary School students in Imo state.
Fielding questions from newsmen at the conclusion of the first day’s training at the Rockview Hotel, Owerri, Imo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Chief CosmasMaduba said the idea was to introduce what will be known as “Farmers’ Club” in the Secondary Schools.
He said it had been established that people no longer have interest in Agriculture, especially, when they are young, reason behind the idea of the federal and state governments to introduce the club.
The Agriculture Commissioner disclosed that for the maiden edition of the programme, five secondary schools were selected , viz: two from Owerri zone; Emmanuel College and Government College, Owerri, two from Orlu zone; Comprehensive Secondary School, Awomamma and Ideato Secondary School, and one from Okigwe.
He said, “If we are able to navigate properly, we can expand the scope to accommodate other secondary schools. What we did is to sensitize the students. Those who are interested in Agriculture were selected by their teachers and brought to this programme and the number came to about 100 students”.
He said professionals from the Ministry of Agriculture were drafted to train the students on importance and reason they should embark in Agriculture, processes and procedures for farming in different areas of Agriculture, including crop and livestock, among others.
Maduba described agriculture as cardinal in the survival of any country, as it does not only serve for food security, but also for economic prosperity and employment creation.
He further disclosed that farm implements will be provided for the trainees to practice what they learnt, adding, “with this type of approach, there is no way we will not have values added in the area of Agriculture, at the long run”.
