Imo govt doing everything possible to secure Ogbu’s release

…Denounces abduction, warns politicians against exploiting his ordeal

The Imo State Government assures the public that it is doing everything within its power to secure the safe release of Hon. Ngozi Ogbu, who was abducted a week ago.

The government condemns in the strongest terms the brazen and lawless act that led to the abduction of Hon. Ngozi Ogbu, a former Chairman of Okigwe Local Government and former member of the Imo State House of Assembly.

In concert with security agencies, the government has activated all necessary mechanisms to ensure his prompt and safe return.

While these efforts are ongoing, the government urges politicians, especially those who have in the past fanned the flames of insecurity in the state, to desist from making political capital out of Hon. Ogbu’s ordeal. Such comments or actions not only trivialise his suffering but could further endanger his life.

The politicisation of a matter involving the life of a husband, father, and fellow citizen is, to say the least, deeply unconscionable.

The Imo State Government reiterates its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and will continue to work tirelessly to keep Imo safe.

Hon. Declan Emelumba.

Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy

Okolieogwo describes Uzodimma’s Minimum Wage increment as motivational

…Says feat’ll improve productivity, economy

As public workers in Imo State delight over the astronomic increase in their salaries, the Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Willie TC Okolieogwo, has described the feat as motivational.

Okolieogwo said the feat by the Governor is a milestone, which he added would not only motivate the workers to be more efficient and productive, but improve the state’s economy.

Okolieogwo stated this in an interview with journalists during the Flag-Off of the second phase of the Renewed Hope Employment Initiative, held recently, at Federal Secretariat, Owerri.

He attributed the pay rise/minimum wage increment for the public workers as a mark of love for humanity and passion for excellence by the Governor.

“The huge increment on Minimum Wage for public workers in Imo State is very motivating. This feat will always motivate the workers to be more efficient and productive, as well as remain very strong, being respectful and disciplined, thereby strengthening the economy of the state.

“The increase in Minimum Wage from #70,000 to #104,000 has made Imo State one of the highest- paying employers in the public sector. Now, Medical Doctors’ Entry-level pay is now ₦508,000 with a maximum of ₦1.2 million monthly. The Lecturers Entry-level pay is now ₦222,000 with a maximum of ₦812,000 monthly. Okolieogwo who lends credence, as well as supports effectively the vision, activities, programs and policies of the Shared Prosperity administration, advised the workers to always intensify optimal performance to enable them add to the development of the state.

He deeply commended the Governor for extending magnanimity to the workers, describing him as a democratic leader and a pragmatic politician, who has been working.

Imo Police Command deploys Special Forces to rescue kidnapped former Okigwe lawmaker

By Jude Onyenedogha

Imo State Police Command says it has deployed personnel of its tactical units to rescue Hon. Ngozi Ogbu, the former lawmaker who represented Okigwe Local Government Area in the Imo State House of Assembly, who is currently being held hostage by bandits in the area.

This was contained in a press statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, which added that the operation will also focus on arresting the bandits behind the criminal and inhuman action against Ogbu.

The statement read: “Imo State Police Command is aware of a viral video showing Hon. Ngozi Ogbu, former State Legislator who represented the Okigwe State Constituency, being held hostage by suspected IPOB/ESN terrorists.

The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has since ordered the immediate deployment of the Command’s Tactical Units, in synergy with other security agencies, and a detailed investigation has been launched to apprehend the hoodlums and ensure the safe rescue of the lawmaker who was abducted at Onuimo on 07/09/2025.

“The Command appeals to the general public to remain calm and vigilant. Anyone with useful information that can assist the ongoing operations should please contact the Imo State Police Command on 0803 477 3600 or report at the nearest Police Station.

The Imo State Police Command assures Imolites that it will not relent until the perpetrators are brought to justice and the victim is safely reunited with his family”, the statement read.

PDP searching for peace ahead of 2027

When the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened its long-awaited 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja a couple of weeks ago, casual observers might have dismissed it as just another routine gathering.

But for veterans of Nigeria’s political terrain, this was no ordinary assembly. It was a statement of survival, a fragile rebirth for a party once dismissed as politically extinct.

Unlike the previous NEC sessions that collapsed into chaos, rancour and dramatic walkouts, the 102nd NEC meeting held firm.

For a political organisation battered by post-2023 recriminations, sabotage and bitter internal feuds, the very fact that the NEC convened and ended in one piece was extraordinary.

In Nigerian politics, where the optics could be as decisive as the outcomes, that survival was itself a victory. The PDP has always lived dangerously, walking the thin line between collapse and resurgence. Its history is fraught with crises that would have killed lesser parties.

In 2006, the “Third Term” saga nearly tore it apart. In 2014, the dramatic walkout of governors at the Eagle Square convention gave birth to the All Progressives Congress (APC). After the 2019 elections, leadership feuds once again paralysed its national secretariat.

The 2023 elections represented another low. The G-5 rebellion led by Nyesom Wike openly defied the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The PDP lost not only at the federal level but also its claim to being Africa’s largest political party. Many analysts wrote its obituary.

Yet, the 102nd NEC showed that, true to form, the PDP retains a survival instinct. Each cycle of crisis has forced a reinvention. The party’s resilience lies not in the absence of fractures, but in its ability to patch them together enough to remain relevant.

The path to the 102nd NEC 2025 was strewn with landmines, explosive issues that could have sunk the party if mishandled. Three things stood out. The National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, became the lightning rod of factional anger.

A determined push to unseat him threatened a constitutional crisis, one that could have crippled the party’s organisational framework. Saraki’s committee diffused this by insisting on compromise, revalidating Anyanwu’s mandate, and avoiding a destabilising legal showdown.

Former Rivers governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, loomed over the PDP like a storm cloud. His defiance in 2023 was still raw. His sympathisers within the PDP remained influential and outright confrontation risked another split.

Saraki’s strategy was containment, not confrontation, keeping Wike’s bloc engaged without letting it dominate until the amiability leading to the NEC.

Perhaps the most critical fault line was between PDP governors and the National Working Committee (NWC). Without their cooperation, no opposition party could stand.

Saraki recognised that APC’s strength in 2023 was rooted in the unity of its governors behind Bola Tinubu. He worked to rebuild consensus between PDP governors and the NWC, a task that paid off at the 102nd NEC when both camps spoke with rare unison.

The meeting did not just avoid implosion; it produced outcomes that could shape PDP’s future. Both the National Chairman and Secretary were affirmed in their positions, silencing rumours of imminent removal and ending months of uncertainty.

Ibas urges Rivers’ political actors to sheathe swords for peace

Rivers State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, has called on political actors in the state to sheathe their swords, saying the progress and prosperity of  Rivers  State must be placed above personal or partisan interest.

This is as Ibas said his administration has planted the seed for reconciliation, but said it’s the people who nurture it to take root.

He urged all stakeholders, including leaders,  elders,  politicians, and citizens, to put the  State first at all times.

Ibas spoke during an Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service in commemoration of Transitional activities to usher in Democratic Governance in Rivers State in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

Notable politicians in Rivers State, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike were absent at the event.

Aside from the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, many monarchs in the state were visibly absent at Thanksgiving.

However, Permanent Secretaries, local government chairmen, heads of boards, agencies, parastatals, and service commanders in the state graced the occasion with their presence.

Ibas said last week that he has ‘successfully achieved’ the mandate given to him by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State.

Recall that he was appointed Administrator of the State on March 18th  for an initial period of six months, by the President who declared a State of Emergency in Rivers following rising political tensions and the attack on oil pipelines in the state by suspected militants.

Tinubu also suspended the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu and the state House of Assembly for the period, which will elapse on September 18th.

In his address at the event, the Administrator stated, Six months ago, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, declared a state of emergency in River State.

At that moment, our beloved state stood at a crossroad, torn by divisions, instability, and broken trust.

By God’s grace and with the support of Mr. President and all of you, we have worked through those difficult days together.

“Today, as a people, we return thanks to God for preserving our lives, granting us peace, and allowing the successful conduct of the local government council elections across the state and thus laying the foundation for the return of democratic governance in Rivers State,” he said.

Quoting some Bible passages he said thanksgiving is a solemn testimony of God’s faithfulness to the State, saying, “We have survived storms Political, social, economic, and through it all, God has been faithful.”

Ibas continued, “The seeds of reconciliation have been planted. These seeds need your deliberate nurture to take root.

Ex-world boxing champion Ricky Hatton dies at 46

Former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton has died at the age of 46, Britain’s Press Association reported on Sunday.

Hatton was found dead at his home in Hyde, northwest England. Greater Manchester Police said they were not treating the death as suspicious.

A police spokesman said, “Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45 am (0545 GMT) today (Sunday), where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”

Hatton won world titles at light-welterweight and welterweight, and his aggressive style made him one of the most popular British boxers of his generation.

Notable opponents include Kostya Tszyu, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao.

Hatton was frank about the mental health problems he endured following his retirement from the ring.

In July, he announced he would make a return to boxing in a professional bout against Eisa Al Dah in Dubai in December.

Britain’s former world heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, paid tribute to Hatton.

“RIP to the legend Ricky Hatton, may he rip,” Fury posted on Instagram.

There will only ever be 1 Ricky Hatton. Can’t believe this so young.”

Another former world champion, Britain’s Amir Khan, described Hatton on X as a “mentor, warrior, and one of Britain’s greatest boxers.”

Khan added, “As fighters, we tell ourselves we’re strong—we train, we sweat, we take hits, we get up. But sometimes the hardest fight happens in silence, in the mind.

“Mental health isn’t weakness. It’s part of being human. And we must talk about it. We must reach out. We must lean on each other.

“Ricky, thank you for everything. For your fights, your moments of glory, your grit. Thank you for pushing us, showing us what’s possible.

Matchroom Boxing said, “(We are) saddened to hear the news of Ricky Hatton’s passing. Our thoughts and condolences are with Ricky’s friends and family at this tragic time. There’s only one Ricky Hatton.”

Beans farmers debunk using cement as preservative

The Cowpea and Beans Farmers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria has debunked allegations of using cement as a preservative of bean products.

The National President of C&BFPMAN, Mr Kabir Shuaibu, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos.

NAN reports that a video making the rounds on social media shows some boys mixing beans with what looks like cement.

But Shuaibu noted that no legitimate association member would engage in such underhand practices.

“We are not aware of the use of cement for the preservation of beans. As an association, we engage in international best practices in the preservation of beans and other allied products.

“Our member-farmers do not engage in unscrupulous practices in the preservation of our beans or cowpea produce.

“We had recently stopped the use of any additive in the preservation of beans. What we do now is to purchase thick nylon bags from the sack companies to package our produce.

“The nylons are fixed inside the sacks, and beans are poured directly into the nylon bags before sealing the sacks.

“With the nylon bags as the first package for the beans, the package is airtight and will not allow weevils or any insect to penetrate the bags,“ he said.

According to him, the farmers make use of friendly additives to prevent weevils from eating up old beans.

“We also make use of a friendly additive, known as ‘Topstoxin,’ to prevent weevils from eating up old beans.

“The bag of beans is divided into quarters with the additives applied in them. This additive poses no danger to human health or damage to the produce.

“In other cases, dried peppers are sealed alongside the bags of beans to prevent the proliferation of weevils into the bag.

“However, the addition of nylon bags to the sacks of beans is currently the best bet in adequate preservation of the beans.

“It is common sense that the use of cement for bean preservation will be easily detected, and the consumers will not patronise us.

“So, we will never engage in such harmful practices,” he said.

INEC has not confirmed ADC state leaders – Party clarifies

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed a report claiming that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed a list of its state chairmen across Nigeria.

In a statement on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, described the circulating report titled “Coalition Update: INEC Confirms ADC State Chairmen Nationwide” as “fake news” aimed at creating confusion within the party.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission, to the best of our knowledge and verification, has issued no such confirmation, neither officially nor unofficially,” Abdullahi said.

He explained that choosing and approving state leaders is the party’s internal responsibility, not INEC’s.

“The process of constituting and ratifying state leadership within any political party lies squarely within the party’s constitutional prerogative. INEC only recognizes what the party submits through the appropriate channels after due process,” he added.

Abdullahi urged ADC members and the public to ignore the fake list and wait for official communication.

“We therefore urge our members and stakeholders to remain calm, vigilant, and guided by official communication from the national leadership of the ADC,” he said.

He reassured supporters that the ADC remains committed to discipline, structure, and internal democracy, adding that any genuine updates on party leadership will be shared through verified platforms

Malami’s actions pose danger to national stability – Civic group alerts security agencies

A civic organization, Coalition for Justice and Equity, (CJE), has urged security agencies and the international community to put a former Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami, on their terrorism watchlist.

In a statement on Sunday, CJE warned that Malami’s actions pose serious danger to national stability.

According to CJE, Malami’s recent allegations against Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, are a “smokescreen to promote a terrorist agenda” in Nigeria.

Malami had, in a petition dated September 10, 2025, addressed to the National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the Department of State Services, and other security chiefs, accused the Kebbi governor of importing political thugs and foreign mercenaries, and engaging in clandestine arms trafficking.

However, CJE described the erstwhile AGF’s claims as baseless, politically motivated, and a dangerous attempt to destabilise Kebbi State and undermine Nigeria’s national security.

CJE Executive Director, Comrade Isaac Olayemi, noted that Malami’s petition represents a brazen display of political opportunism, adding that it was “mischievously fabricated with the intent to distract, destabilise, and delegitimise the progress Kebbi State has made under its current leadership”.

CJE added that Malami’s allegations are part of a desperate bid to deflect attention from his own alleged involvement in similar activities, including reports of him facilitating banditry in the state.

The civic group accused Malami of hypocrisy, pointing to his silence during his eight-year tenure as Attorney General (2015-2023) under President Muhammadu Buhari.

“During that era, bandits, terrorists, and criminal gangs brutally attacked numerous towns in Kebbi and throughout Nigeria during that time. Yet, not once did Malami raise his voice in solidarity with the victims, issue letters of condolence, or used his immense power to persuade the Federal Government to take immediate action,” Olayemi said.

CJE described Malami’s sudden concern for Kebbi as “laughable and insulting,” noting that he is attempting to recast himself as a “messiah” after years of alleged negligence and corruption scandals, including the “unexplained accumulation of wealth that is visible to the blind, the controversial handling of high-profile cases, and the brazen attempt to shield cronies from accountability”.

The coalition highlighted the suspicious timing of Malami’s petition, noting it came just 48 hours after reports surfaced accusing him of facilitating banditry in Kebbi.

“This is the oldest trick in the book: when caught in the act, cry louder than your accusers. This is a classic case of the guilty pointing outward to deflect attention from his own shadowy dealings—just like a hunter who is trying to pose as prey,” Olayemi stated.

Soludo’s wife,  Nonye,  Ekwunife, fight dirty over infidelity allegations

… DNA test suggested to end arguments

The wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has clashed with Senator Uche Ekwunife, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy Governorship candidate in the November election, over what she called “malicious allegations” against her family.

In a statement on Saturday, Soludo said she would not respond to “fabricated” claims but warned of legal action unless Ekwunife apologised within 72 hours. She also challenged the senator to a public oath and DNA tests.

The deputy governorship candidate had alleged in a viral video that Governor Soludo and his wife were part of the administration of the then-Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju.

Mbadinuju, now late, served as the governor of the state from 1999 to 2003.d

Mrs Ekwunife also alleged that Mrs Soludo had an affair with Mr Mbadinuju during his time as governor before suggesting that her children might not have been fathered by her husband.

Mrs Ekwunife’s allegations were in response to Governor Soludo’s recent remarks questioning the former senator’s academic qualifications, particularly her attainment of a doctorate degree.

“For starters, let me repeat three verifiable facts. One, I have never worked for anyone in my life. I have been a professional and an entrepreneur all my adult life. Two, I never met Dr. Mbadinuju of blessed memory in my life. Three, in my 55 years on planet earth, I have known only one man, Chukwuma Soludo,” she said.

She added: “Since she claims to be a converted Catholic, I challenge her and both of us to swear an oath of fidelity and chastity at any Cathedral in front of the Blessed Sacrament. I will also swear with my children that I have known only one man—Chukwuma Soludo.”

The First Lady also proposed DNA tests in London, offering to bear all costs. “As a businesswoman, I will pay for your and your family’s travels as well as for the tests. If, after the tests, it is confirmed that your husband is the father of all your children, I will congratulate you with a cash award. I can confirm that my family is ready for this test at any moment of your choice,” she added.

Ekwunife, however, dismissed the challenge, saying she only gave “friendly advice.”

“Mrs. Soludo does not owe me any explanation regarding personal family matters. If my statement caused any discomfort to Mrs. Soludo, she owes her husband an explanation, not me,” she said.

“Challenging me to respond or undergo tests does not involve me, as I am not part of her family affairs. She should focus on addressing any concerns with her husband.”

She concluded, “My resolve to contribute positively and save Anambra State from misrule remains strong and undaunted.”

Anambra too sophisticated to be governed by semi-illiterates – APGA

The Director-General of the All Progressives Grand Alliance campaign organisation, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, has said that the party and its candidates remained focused on the future of Anambra as the campaigns for the November 8, 2025, governorship election in the state gather momentum.

As the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election draws closer, political campaigns have intensified, with candidates and their supporters trading words over credibility and competence.

APGA, which currently holds power in the state, has the governor of the state, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, as the governorship candidate and his deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, as his running mate.

In a statement issued on Friday, Chukwulobelu, who is also the Secretary to the Anambra State Government, said the issue of who has the basic qualifications to govern Anambra has remained a legitimate issue in the electioneering process, both now and in the future, adding that Anambra is far too sophisticated to be governed by semi-illiterates and/or people of easy virtues.

The statement read in part, “The 2025 Anambra governorship election is on November 8, and various political parties/candidates are exercising their constitutional rights to campaign for the office. Frustrated by the general opinion polls that the Soludo-Ibezim ticket is the consensus of Ndi Anambra for the election, some candidates are beginning to show desperation with the intent to distract or destroy.

“We are working hard to earn every vote based upon the value that we have created and will still create for the people. But the issue of who has the basic qualifications to govern Anambra will remain a legitimate issue in the campaign — both now and in the future! Anambra is far too sophisticated to be governed by semi-illiterates and/or people of easy virtues.

“The recent tantrums and despicable obscenities by the Deputy Governorship candidate of the APC, Senator Uche Ekwunife, are one example. Our response is that we will remain razor-focused on the issues about the future of Anambra, and no number of fabricated obscenities can distract us. We will not take the bait to get into the gutter with them. And we will not dignify them either!

NULGE urges Tinubu to enforce LG autonomy

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently implement the Supreme Court judgment granting full autonomy to local governments nationwide.

This is contained in a communiqué signed by MrAliyu Kankara, President-General of NULGE, and issued at the end of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.

It was reported that over a year after the Supreme Court ruling was delivered, it has yet to be enforced by the Federal Government.

According to the communiqué, the NEC-in-session urged the government to take immediate steps toward implementing the judgment without further delay.

“This undue delay undermines the principles of democracy and denies the people at the grassroots the numerous benefits associated with the autonomy of local government administration.

“It is expected that a democratic and people-oriented government should abide by the tenets of democracy and respect the rule of law,” the statement read.

The union also condemned the seizure of local government allocations in Osun State, describing the action as unjust and detrimental to grassroots development.

“The unlawful seizure of funds has crippled service delivery, distorted development plans, and worsened the suffering of Osun people,” it added.

On workers’ welfare, NULGE expressed concern over the non-implementation of the national minimum wage in some states.

“It described the failure as callous and unfair, especially given the current harsh economic realities.

“This inaction is unfair to our members, who are crucial to the development of the third tier of government, particularly during these challenging times.

“We urge these governments to review and improve their wage structures to ensure fair compensation for local government workers.”

The NEC further called on the Federal Government to intervene in the Osun political crisis and ensure the immediate restoration of the seized local government allocations, in the interest of peace, justice, and sustainable development.

Regarding the recent demolition of NULGE’s national secretariat, the union has appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to intervene and ensure redress.

State brutality can’t silence us — NLC declares

…Repression won’t break, it only strengthens us

The Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), has declared that no amount of state brutality or political repression will silence the Nigerian working class, insisting that every attack on its leadership only strengthens its resolve to resist anti-people policies.

In a statement marking the first anniversary of the arrest and detention of its President, Joe Ajaero, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on September 9, 2024, the Congress described the action as an infamous attempt by the state to silence dissenting voices.

Signed by Acting General Secretary, Benson Upah, the statement recalled that Ajaero was arrested while on his way to attend the UK Trade Union Congress conference in London, an action the NLC said was intended to “shield capital and political elites from scrutiny and isolate Nigerian workers from international solidarity.”

Among others, the statement said “This arrest and detention came on the heels of charges of cybercrime, conspiracy and treason (plus other charges) thrown at him for a “citizen protest” the Nigeria Labour Congress did not organize.

Nigeria Labour Congress was however critical of the mindless and disproportionate use of violence by the State in suppressing the protest.

This act of intimidation was preceded by the arrest, abduction, and brutalisation of Joe

Ajaero in Owerri by the agents of the State for which no one has been prosecuted till today in spite of the promises by the National Security Adviser, (NSA).

“This act of harassment or political repression was not an isolated case but part of a broader war waged against workers and the poor. By preventing our President from attending the UK TUC conference in London, the State sought to silence the truth, shield capital and political elites from scrutiny, and isolate Nigerian workers from international solidarity. It was an attempt to whip labour into line so that neoliberal policies; privatisation, tariff hikes, subsidy removals, wage suppression, and casualization; could proceed without resistance.

“It was indeed a miscalculation by the ruling class as this action sparked a collective rage across the country. Though Comrade Ajaero was released at midnight following the threats of action from our unions, the arrest exposed the anti-worker character of the Nigerian State and provoked outrage both at home and across the global labour movement. Thus, far from weakening us, it underscored the central truth of history: every attack on the working class only strengthens our resolve to struggle. It gave the movement the required fillip to robustly engage in the protection of workers and people’s rights.

“As we mark the first one-year anniversary of this sordid event, the Nigeria Labour Congress wishes to remind all Nigerian workers that repression is the language of a system desperate to protect the privileges of a few against the needs of the many. As they tax us more, borrow more and appropriate our collective resources unto themselves, redemption lies in our collective resolve and efforts. The answer is not then to retreat but to mobilise; not silence but louder voices; not despair but greater organisation.

“We therefore call on workers, trade unions, artisans, youth, and progressive forces to

intensify the collective struggle against the neoliberal agenda that impoverishes the masses within the limits of the law. One year after, we reaffirm the lesson of September 9, 2024: the working class is the backbone of democracy and social justice. Attempts to silence us will always fail, for our strength lies in unity, solidarity, and in our unbreakable commitment to the sovereignty of our nation and total security of our people.

At every point in time, men and women who are able and willing to make the required sacrifices to engage the system to make our nation better must be encouraged. Such men and women require our collective support and protection which strengthens their hands to continue in their services to workers and the people.

“We must counter the narrative that seeks to divide us and to present us as irritants and trouble makers. We are patriotic citizens committed to the unity and greatness of this nation and a nation that works for all.”

UN report places Nigeria 4th globally in attacks on school children

Nigeria has been ranked fourth among countries with the highest levels of “grave violations” against school children in armed conflict, according to a United Nations report.

The UN Secretary-General’s 2024 report on children and armed conflict, released in 2025, revealed that it verified 41,370 attacks — the highest number of grave violations against children in nearly three decades.

The violations, which include: abduction, recruitment, and sexual violence, placed Nigeria behind Israel (and the occupied Palestinian territory), the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Somalia.

According to the report, Israel recorded 8,554 cases of grave violations in 2024, followed by 4,043 in DRC, 2,568 in Somalia, 2,436 in Nigeria, and 2,269 in Haiti.

While non-state armed groups were linked to half of the attacks, the report noted that government forces were the main perpetrators of killings, maiming, attacks on schools and hospitals, as well as the denial of humanitarian access.

It further disclosed that attacks on schools surged globally by 44 per cent between 2022 and 2023, while the use of schools for military purposes rose by 20 per cent.

Over 10,000 students and teachers were either killed, abducted, arrested, or injured during this period.

“These violations threaten not only individual lives but the future of entire communities,” the report said.

Virginia Gamba, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, warned that children caught in conflicts are being “robbed of their childhood” as governments and armed groups persist in violating international laws.

The report also revealed that more than 3,000 children were detained for alleged involvement with armed groups, an increase from the previous year. Gamba urged governments to treat these children primarily as victims and explore alternatives to detention.

It recommended the full implementation of the Safe Schools Declaration, calling on countries to strengthen resilient education systems.

The report’s release comes ahead of a high-level event in Geneva to mark the International Day to Protect Education from Attack.

Nigeria, which endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration in 2018, developed a policy on violence-free schools in 2021 and established the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre to oversee funding and coordination of security measures.

However, implementation has faced challenges, with the initiative’s enrollment rate reported at 11,000 by mid-2025.

ADC: El-Rufai motivated by grievance, needs revenge against Tinubu – Aisha Yesufu

Activist Aisha Yesufu has said that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is motivated by personal grievances against President Bola Tinubu.

Yesufu, in a post on X yesterday, explained that El-Rufai’s decision to align with opposition voices was not about joining Peter Obi or herself, but about seeking revenge after being sidelined by his political allies.

“El-Rufai came because he has been hurt by his team mates and he needs revenge. It’s personal to him and he wants by all means for Tinubu to be removed, which is a goal that currently unites us,” she said.

The activist stressed that her focus remained on ensuring Nigeria has rule of law, citing the unresolved disappearance of AbubakarIdris, popularly known as Dadiyata.

She added that different roles exist within a movement, describing some as hardliners and others as bridge-builders, while calling for patience in the quest for justice and accountability in governance.

“People have paid for genocidal acts even after decades. It can happen in Nigeria too. Let’s get a nation with good governance and rule of law,” Yesufu said.

Anambra Para-military Agency operatives allegedly kill pregnant woman, three others

Operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, also known as OCHA Brigade, a paramilitary agency in Anambra State, have allegedly shot dead a pregnant woman and three others.

Sources said the shooting may have been as a result of accidental discharge from an operative attached to the agency, while enforcing ban on street trading in Onitsha.

It was gathered that the incident happened yesterday close to the popular Onitsha Main Market, at Emeka Offor Plaza on the New Market Road in Onitsha.

Though a pregnant woman was said to have died instantly as a result of the shooting, the status of four other people involved in the incident was not ascertained, as other witnesses said they had been rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred sparking panic and outrage among traders and residents who fled the scene for safety.

One of the sources said: “This is heartbreaking. Four innocent people who left their homes this morning have been cut down in cold blood. Among them is a pregnant woman.”

It was gathered that the shooting happened during an enforcement on ban against roadside trading, and activity the agency engages in, in markets across the state.

Police authorities in Anambra State confirmed the incident, but insisted that only one lady lost her life, while four others were only wounded and have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

The state Police Command spokesperson, SP TochukwuIkenga, who spoke with our correspondent, said: “Yes, the incident happened, and once we heard of it, the state Police commissioner, IkioyeOrutugu, promptly dispatched operatives led by Assistant Police Commissioner in charge of operations to restore calm in the area.

On the causes of the shooting, Ikenga said, started as a result of altercation between traders and the operatives during an enforcement exercise, and later ended in sporadic shooting.

Collapsed University hostel: Ebonyi receives Panel report

The Ebonyi State Government has received the report of the panel set up to investigate the partial collapse of Pentagon Hostel, a student lodge at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo.

Receiving the report in his office in Abakaliki, the Commissioner for Capital City and Urban Development, Hon. Sunday Inyima, said the state government would henceforth engage more professional engineers, estate valuers, surveyors, architects, and other relevant bodies in building construction processes to forestall future building collapses in the state.

According to him, the inclusion of certified professionals in construction and approval processes has become imperative to ensure structural integrity and public safety.

It would be recalled that Pentagon Hostel, a two-storey building located directly opposite the university’s main gate, partially collapsed recently, prompting the state government to set up a committee to investigate the incident.

Appreciating the committee for what he described as a “thorough and timely job,” Inyima noted:

“When this incident occurred, we felt it was necessary to institute a panel to uncover the causes of this unfortunate development. Though no lives were lost, students’ properties were destroyed. We did not want to wait for another tragedy before taking action, hence the need for this report, which we have received today.”

The Commissioner assured that the ministry would study the report carefully and forward an executive summary to Governor Francis Nwifuru for further action.

“The Ministry and the government will take this report seriously. I will personally summarize it and present it to His Excellency, who, coincidentally, is also a builder. Government will thoroughly review it and make an official statement,” he said.

Disclose locations of killers, other criminals in Zamfara, group tells Lawal

The Coalition of Citizens Against Banditry and Insecurity in Nigeria (CABIN) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Zamfara State governor, DaudaLawal, urging him to take decisive action in addressing insecurity across the state.

In a statement yesterday signed by its president, Comrade Solomon Charles Abutu, the group said Governor Lawal’s recent remarks acknowledging awareness of the presence of criminal groups in Zamfara require immediate collaboration with security agencies to restore peace and stability.

CABIN noted that failure to act within the stipulated period would lead to mass protests and a call on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara.

The organisation, which describes itself as a national coalition of civic advocates, security analysts, and community leaders, stressed that Zamfara has become one of the epicentres of Nigeria’s banditry crisis, with repeated cases of abductions and attacks on communities.

It further urged President Bola Tinubu to closely monitor developments in Zamfara, ensure adequate federal support, and hold state leadership accountable in the collective effort to strengthen national security.

The group vowed to mobilise residents, civil society organisations, and student unions for peaceful demonstrations in Gusau and Abuja should the ultimatum expire without concrete action.

Imo Assembly passes motion to rename Douglas Road after Uzodimma

The Imo State House of Assembly yesterday passed a motion for the renaming of the popular Douglas Road to Governor Hope Uzodimma Road.

The lawmakers passed the motion at the resumption of sitting after about three months break to direct the State government which will in turn, direct the Chairman of Owerri Municipal local government council, to rename the road after Uzodimma.

The House also resolved to direct the relevant agencies of government to reflect the new name in all records, signage, and official documents of the state.

The motion was sponsored by the member representing Nkwerre State Constituency, Hon ChisomOjukwu.

While moving the motion, Hon Ojukwu regretted that Harold .M. Douglas, the first District Commissioner of Owerri Province (1902) in whose honour Douglas Road was named after in both official Colonial records and oral traditions was a man who ruled with violence, forced labour, collective punishment and massacres, including the Eziama Massacre (1904), the war on Norie (1905) and the Ahiara Massacre (1905).

Ojukwu said in spite of the history of oppression, the most prominent road and the seat of Government in Owerri were named after Harold. M. Douglas , Douglas Road and Douglas House, to immortalize a colonial figure, who inflicted pains and destructions on Ndi Igbo.

According to him, landmarks of such importance should not honourColonial Masters, but should reflect the names of the true heroes in the state.

Rivers: Fubara, lawmakers warm up for return as Tinubu orders Ibas to prepare handover notes

Barring unforeseen circumstances, the suspended governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, and the 32-member House of Assembly will return to office on September 18.

Indications that the suspended governor, his deputy, as well as the state lawmakers will return to office were rife last week after a closed-door meeting between the President and the Sole Administrator in the Presidential Villa, where Ibas was given a matching order to submit a comprehensive handover note of his six-month emergency rule before his 10-day vacation ends.

President Bola Tinubu, had, on March 18, proclaimed an emergency rule in Rivers and suspended the state governor, his deputy and the Assembly for six months to douse the political tension between the governor and the former governor of the state and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The action of the President was aimed at addressing escalating political and security challenges in the oil-rich region, following the increasing tensions between Fubara and various political factions, including former allies like Wike.

According to the president in the broadcast, wherein he declared the emergency rule in Rivers, “The state has been at a standstill since the crisis started, with the good people of the state not being able to have access to the dividends of democracy”.

The President then appointed Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (retd) as the Sole Administrator to run the affairs of the state for the six months that Fubara and the lawmakers are suspended.

In the handover notes, the sources said, Ibas is expected to explain all the funds he inherited from Fubara, revenues accrued within the six months of the emergency rule and their respective sources “as well as expenditures during his stewardship and the various projects the funds were channeled into within the period under review, with clear specifications.”

The President may likely make a pronouncement to lift the emergency rule on September 18, a date that would make it exactly six months since the state of emergency was proclaimed.

Source said Fubara, as a condition for reinstatement, agreed not to seek re-election in 2027. “He is expected to serve out his current term and vacate office without rocking the boat,” the source stated.

Fubara was also said to have accepted Wike’s leadership and consented to allowing him to nominate candidates for all local government elections under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) across the state. These nominees are to be elected without internal opposition in the election expected to take place before the end of October.

“On his return, the suspended governor will also pay all outstanding allowances and entitlements of the 27 lawmakers loyal to the FCT Minister, who were suspended from the state assembly. In exchange, the lawmakers will cooperate and work peacefully with the governor to enable him to complete his tenure,” a source said.

On February 28, the Supreme Court, in a judgment in respect of about eight consolidated appeals concerning the political crisis in Rivers, based on several grave unconstitutional acts and disregard of rule of law that have been committed by the Governor of Rivers State as shown by the evidence before it pronounced that.

“A government cannot be said to exist without one of the three arms that make up the government of a state under the 1999 Constitution as amended. In this case, the head of the executive arm of the government has chosen to collapse the legislature to enable him to govern without the legislature as a despot. As it is, there is no government in Rivers State.”

The apex court held in the said judgment that the 27 members of the House who had allegedly defected “are still valid members of the state House of Assembly and cannot be prevented from participating in the proceedings of that House by the 8th Respondent (that is, the Governor) in cohorts with four members”

The Supreme Court then made some orders to restore the state to immediate constitutional democracy. These orders include the immediate passing of an Appropriation Bill by the Rivers State House of Assembly, which up till the day the emergency rule was declared, was not been facilitated.

Tinubu had said, while declaring the emergency rule, that, “With all these and many more, no good and responsible President will stand by and allow the grave situation to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the Constitution to address the situation in the state, which no doubt requires extraordinary measures to restore good governance, peace, order and security.

“In the circumstance, having soberly reflected on and evaluated the political situation in Rivers State, it has become inevitably compelling for me to invoke the provision of section 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended, to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State with effect from today, 18th  March 2025 and I so do.

“By this declaration, the Governor of Rivers State, Mr Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu and all elected members of the House of Assembly of Rivers State are hereby suspended for an initial period of six months.

“In the meantime, I hereby nominate Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (retd) as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state in the interest of the good people of Rivers State,” the President said.

NASS to Natasha: 6-month suspension to be lifted after appeal court verdict

The National Assembly has formally declined Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s request to resume legislative duties.

Last week, Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan had notified the Senate of her intended return on September 4, 2025 the date she claimed marked the end of her six-month suspension.

Acknowledging Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan’s letter, the Senate stated that her six-month suspension remains in force pending the outcome of a Court of Appeal case she instituted against the Senate.

In a letter signed by Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, the Senate clarified that her suspension took effect on March 6, 2025, and emphasized that the matter is still subjudice (under judicial consideration).

The Senate insisted that no administrative action could be taken until the Court of Appeal delivers a verdict.

“The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the letter read.

It would be recalled that Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6, following allegations of insubordination after she rejected a change of her designated seat during plenary.

The suspension, based on recommendations of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, also stripped her of aides, office privileges, and salaries.

The lawmaker had argued that her ordeal was linked to her petition accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim the Senate dismissed.

NUPENG strike: Dangote walks out of peace meeting with Nigerian govt, talks deadlocked

A marathon meeting convened by the Federal Government to resolve NUPENG’s strike against alleged Dangote Refinery’s anti- union practices ended in stalemate at dawn.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Labour and Employment, had convened the emergency meeting in a bid to end the planned industrial action yesterday in Abuja.

The meeting aimed to address allegations of anti-union practices against the Dangote Refinery, but discussions reportedly broke down as the Dangote representatives walkout of the meeting.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, who presided over the meeting, told newsmen that progress was slow.

“We have not been able to reach final agreement on this matter. Negotiations will continue.

“Maybe by tomorrow, we will resolve the issues. I appeal to everyone to maintain peace as discussions continue,” he said.

The minister, therefore assured all, that the government is still committed to finding common ground for all parties.

Speaking, Benson Upah, Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, alleged that the Dangote’s delegation was deliberately sabotaging the process.

“The representative of the Dangote Refinery walked out on the Honourable Minister and Organised Labour. So, there was no agreement.

“Even, when we bent backwards to accommodate his uncompromising behaviour, he still did what he did.

“So, we are left with no choice than to do the needful. The action continues,” Mr Upah said.

He added that the labour movement remained open to dialogue, but, could not negotiate alone.

“It takes more than one party to reach a resolution.

“Whenever the Dangote Refinery sees the need for genuine dialogue, we are ready, even this night, if they return,” he said.

NUPENG President, Williams Akporeha, accused Dangote Refinery of seeking to suppress workers’ rights, while expanding its monopoly in Nigeria’s energy sector.

According to him, NUPENG’s action on the matter is for the interest of Nigerians.

“We cannot stand an investor whose main purpose is to enslave Nigerians.

“Dangote cannot take us back to the dark days of slavery.”he added.

He further accused the refinery of denying employees the right to unionise.

“Nigerians have wished him well. He should not enslave them.

“He wants to monopolise the entire system and even the workers. This, we say, No to,” he said.

Hold us accountable on electoral promises – Wike to FCT residents

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, NyesomWike, yesterday said President Bola Tinubu is fulfilling his promises of developing the capital city and its satellite towns.

Wike declared that residents of the capital city can hold the current government and leaders accountable for their electoral promises.

The minister spoke during the flag-off of the reconstruction and dualisation of Karu road, from Karu Interchange to Customs Clinic Junction, and other Karu township roads.

Wike said: “You have to hold us accountable when you have fulfilled part of your covenant by voting for people, ask them this question, you told that when we vote for you, this is what you are going to do for us, have you done it?

“And so Mr President made a promise that he was going to develop the city at the same time develop the satellite areas. I don’t know why they should include Karu as a satellite town, Karu is a city. The only problem that is being associated to satellite towns are the bad roads and now the roads will come up.

“Just as the Minister of State said, some few weeks ago, we were in Karu to flag off the provision of water to satellite towns for Karu, Orozo, Karishi area and which is being carried out by CGC.

“Remember that from Nyaya to Karishi, the express road used to be too bad but today we have been able to fix that road.”

The minister also urged the people of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, to support the current Chairman, Christopher ZakkaMaikalangu in the upcoming council election.

Wike informed AMAC residents that Maikalangu has access to the government that he can leverage on to bring developmental projects to the council.

He said: “That’s why I will always want you to support those that can go to the government and say look my area is bad and the government will listen to them. Do you know that there are some people you will elect and they can’t talk to the government, do you know that?

“There are people you elect that have the audience of government. And that is why the Chairman of AMAC, Maikalangu – he has always been on my neck – he has always told me ‘sir, even though you have done Nyaya to Karishi, it will be unfair as the Chairman of AMAC because this Karu road has been a concern to us, do me that favour to and see whether you can under emergency reconstruct and dualize this Karu road.’

Wike urged residents to support Maikalangu because he has been very supportive of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, hence “we will listen to him.”

“Because he’s been a young man who has been very supportive of this Renewed Hope Agenda, we felt it would be better to encourage him and listen to him, so we are here today.

“If I were you, continue to support him because it means that he has the people of Karu at heart, it means that he has the people of AMAC at heart and that is why we say in politics if you fall for me, I fall for you; if you do for me, I do for you; if you love me, I love you; if you hate me, I hate you; if you push me, I push you,” he added.

Wike slams N5m fines on FCT land misusers, grants 30-day grace

By Sunday Abah, Abuja

Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, NyesomWike has granted land use defaulters a 30-day grace period to revert to their original land uses and also pay a N5 million penalty.

The penalty is alongside a 7.5 percent charge on the Assessed Capital Value of illegally converted properties.

This was as properties in some parts of the FCT found to be in violation of land use regulations have been valued at over N1.03 trillion.

Wike made this known in Tuesday in Abuja when he received reports from two committees set up to examine the land use abuses and also look into a land deal involving JonahCapital Nigeria Limited.

“I am not going to leave anybody to go free. We are looking for money to carry on projects. If you fall into our trap, it is your business. If you do not want to pay, we take back your title, sell it and still raise money.

“Certain areas are designated for residential, others for commercial. But people believe they can do anything without government approval. If you do not sanction them, it will continue,” the minister said.

Presenting the report, Chairman of the Land Use and Purposes Clause Committee and Director of Development Control, MukhtarGaladima, disclosed that many properties in highbrow districts such as AdemolaAdetokunbo Street, Aminu Kano Crescent, Yakubu Gowon Street, and Gana Street had been unlawfully converted from their original purposes to residential, commercial, or mixed-use.

According to him, the cumulative capital value of such properties stood at N 1,037,478,716,500, adding that sanctions such as sealing, demolition, revocation, or withdrawal of titles await owners who fail to comply with the new directives.

The committee had recommended sweeping reforms, including land use conversions, new fees and reissuance of title documents.

The committee reported that the Development Lease Agreement (DLA) was originally signed between the Federal Capital Development Authority FCDA and JonahCapital Nigeria Limited for a seven-year mass housing project.

However, it found that JonahCapital had unlawfully transferred rights to third parties — including through powers of attorney and agreements —without FCDA’s consent.
