The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Mawlid, the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, DrOlubunmiTunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, extended warm greetings to Muslims in Nigeria and across the world.
He urged the Muslim Ummah to emulate the Prophet’s virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance and compassion, stressing that these values are crucial to building a united and progressive nation.
The minister also called on Nigerians of all faiths to use the occasion to pray for the peace, security, and stability of the country while supporting government efforts toward national harmony and sustainable development.
“The celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid offers us yet another opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and imbibe the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity,” the statement quoted Tunji-Ojo as saying.
He further urged citizens to remain law-abiding, security-conscious, and supportive of government policies aimed at enhancing the well-being of all Nigerians, while wishing Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration.

U.S. donates $32.5m support to WFP for food, nutrition in Nigeria
The United States (U.S.) Government said it has provided the World Food Programme (WFP) with the sum of 32.5 million dollars to support its food and nutrition programme in Nigeria.
This is contained in a statement issued byAishahGambari of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, yesterday.
It explained that the donation was aimed at ensuring the provision of food and nutrition assistance to help save lives in the country.
“The World Food Programme Nigeria, with U.S. Government’s contribution of 32.5 million dollars, will provide food assistance and nutrition support to internally displaced persons across conflict-affected areas.
“With the U.S. Government’s donation, the World Food Programme Nigeria will provide food and nutrition assistance to 764,205 beneficiaries across Northeast and Northwest Nigeria.
“This includes complementary nutrition top-ups for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, and 43,235 children through electronic food vouchers,” the statement said.
The reports said that WFP, which is funded entirely by voluntary donations from governments, corporations, and private individuals, is the world’s largest humanitarian organisation.
The U.S. is, by far, the largest single donor to the WFP, as it consistently provides a significant portion of its funding each year, contributing more than 2.9 billion dollars in 2023 alone.
As the United Nations’ food-assistance branch, WFP works in more than 120 countries, providing emergency food relief to people in need and building long-term food security and stability to save lives in emergencies.
It also helps communities to rebuild their lives and livelihoods after a crisis, including nutrition projects, especially for mothers and children, school feeding programmes, and building resilience to climate-related shocks.
In 2020, the WFP won the Nobel Peace Prize for combating hunger, contributing to peace, and serving as a driving force in preventing the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.
Banditry: I have to create state police – Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed that the establishment of state police is unavoidable as part of efforts to strengthen security across the country.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a courtesy visit by a delegation of prominent Katsina indigenes led by Governor DikkoRadda, Tinubu said the federal government is committed to confronting insecurity head-on.
The president directed security agencies to reassess their operations in Katsina State, which has witnessed a spike in banditry, and disclosed that advanced military equipment and surveillance technology would be deployed. He also revealed plans to enhance the capacity of newly recruited forest guards in the state.
Tinubu stressed that while the country faces serious security challenges, they can be resolved with determination and strategy.
“The security challenges that we are facing are surmountable. Yes, we have porous borders. We inherited weaknesses that could have been addressed earlier. It is a challenge that we must fix, and we are facing it,” he said.
“I have today directed all the security agencies to energise further and look at the strategies. We have approved the additional acquisition of drones.”
The president further instructed that he be given daily updates on security operations in Katsina.
“I am reviewing all the aspects of security; I have to create state police. We are looking at that holistically,” he added.
“We will defeat insecurity. We must protect our children, our people, our livelihood, our places of worship, and our recreational spaces. They can’t intimidate us.”
Tinubu reminded the delegation that in February 2024, the federal government formed a committee to study the framework for state policing. The initiative has since gained wide support, although as of March, 20 states had yet to submit their reports, according to Vice-President KashimShettima.
The president also paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, assuring that his legacy would be preserved.
“The time we lost our brother, President Buhari, is a loss for all of us. It is the will of God Almighty, but he has left in a good way,” he said.
“He didn’t hand over a defeated country, a battered political structure, but a legacy of success, and that is the most important thing.”
Governor Radda expressed gratitude to Tinubu for his consistent support.
“Mr President, I would like to thank you very much, and I want to say before our elders that there was never a time I came to the President with a request that he rejected,” Radda said.
Other speakers, including former Governor AminuMasari and Ibrahim Ida, the Wazirin of Katsina, commended Tinubu for honouring Buhari and investing in infrastructure projects in the state.
Ida, however, urged the federal government to prioritise the upgrade of the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport and intensify security in southern Katsina.
CNG price hits N450/SCM as FG withdraws subsidies
Amid long queues and insufficient refilling stations, the cost of one standard cubic metre of Compressed Natural Gas has jumped from N230 to N450. Our correspondent gathered from retailers that the government reviewed the price recently to N450, reducing its subsidies.
However, while trucks pay N450/SCM, car drivers and commercial drivers still enjoy some subsidies, as they pay N380 for one standard cubic metre of what the government calls a cheaper alternative to petrol and diesel.
The Programme Director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, Michael Oluwagbemi, did not answer calls to his phone on Tuesday. However, an official of the PCNGI, who did not want to be mentioned because he was not authorised to speak with the press, confirmed the new development.
The source explained that commercial drivers pay less to ensure the cost of transportation does not go up. “The refuelling stations now sell at different prices for cars and trucks. So, the price depends on the type of vehicle, whether it is a commercial bus, a truck or a private car,” he said.
Asked if the type of vehicle should determine the price of CNG, he said there is a subsidy on commercial vehicles. “The price is subsidised for commercial vehicles. Trucks transporting goods pay higher prices, while private cars and buses that convey passengers buy at a reduced rate. There’s supposed to be a subsidy across the board, but this is the current situation,” the source stated.
Aside from the price, he said the major focus of the PCNGI is to ensure that there are more refilling stations across the country to reduce the long queues.
“Our main focus is to increase the availability of gas. We want to build more refuelling stations so that no converted vehicle owner will complain that it doesn’t have a place to buy CNG. Some have converted their vehicles, but when gas is not available, they will be running on petrol. So, our major drive right now is to increase the number of CNG stations nationwide,” he said.
Speaking with our correspondent, a major retailer of CNG confirmed that NNPC Gas Marketing Limited reviewed the prices. According to the retailer, who requested anonymity, the Federal Government had capped the price of CNG below its cost since 2023, when it removed petrol subsidies.
He added that the price may rise to N500 or N600/SCM soon, stating that this could be to attract investors. “I can confirm that the price for CNG was reviewed upward by NGML. Truck drivers are to pay N450/SCM, while commercial drivers will pay N380/SCM. We know that the price may go to N500 or N600 soon. The government subsidised it to attract users and it sold it to marketers at a subsidised rate,” he said.
Meanwhile, there are concerns that vehicle owners may abandon CNG if the queues persist and prices continue to rise. “Some spent up to N1.5m or more to convert their petrol-powered vehicles to CNG. Now with the price increase and the long queues, many may have to return to petrol. The government has been trying to convince the people that there is cheaper fuel. The government sold it to marketers at a reduced price. In reality, the difference between CNG and petrol is not significant.
“When you see some refuelling stations, the queues are as long as 1.5km. This is not encouraging,” Adeyemi Paul, a ride-hailing driver, told our correspondent.
Contacted, Louis Ibah, the spokesman for the Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), EkperikpeEkpo, said he was at a function with the minister and could not talk. The NNPC could not be reached, as it only announced a new spokesperson on Tuesday.
It would be recalled that when President Bola Tinubu announced in 2023 that the fuel subsidy was removed, the price of petrol rose from N175 per litre to N870. To cushion the effect, the Federal Government promoted CNG as a cheaper alternative fuel to petrol, incentivising Nigerians to convert their vehicles to CNG.
In June, the Federal Government said over 100,000 petrol-powered vehicles had been converted to CNG in one year, stressing that it had recorded significant progress in advancing the use of alternative fuel across the country. Oluwagbemi said that as the Federal Government ramped up efforts to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal, the initiative had recorded major success in the last year.
According to him, the number of CNG-powered vehicles in the country had risen from fewer than 4,000 to nearly 100,000 in just over a year. “From just seven conversion centres last year, we now have 265 centres nationwide. We’ve also created over 10,000 direct jobs and grown from 20 to 60 operational refuelling stations, with 175 more underway. So far, we have 60 CNG stations up and running—up from just 20 in late 2023. Over the next three months, we plan to commission an additional 100,” he added.
Defending the pace of implementation, Oluwagbemi stated, “Rome wasn’t built in a day. Those who led Nigeria into the fuel subsidy crisis cannot fairly criticise the speed at which we’re addressing it.” However, there are concerns that the latest rise in the price of CNG may discourage its users.
Abia monarch calls for strengthening of INEC, Judiciary in preparation for next general elections
From Henrietta Ashikodi, Umuahia
The Vice Chairman of Umuahia North Traditional Rulers Council, HRH, Eze Philip Kachie Ukegbu has called for the strengthening of Independent National Electoral Commission INEC and the Judiciary, adding that if these two institutions are gotten right, it will enhance efficient and effective 2027 general elections.

“Otti’s administration is doing well, if you enter Abia now you will appreciate what the governor is doing, handling so many projects at the same time. Criticism is good but it should be constructive, praise a man for what he is doing right then criticize him rightly” Eze Ukegbu stated.
He thanked the governor for increasing the stipends of Ezes in the state but further appeal to the governor to enhance the stipends given to traditional rulers of Umuahia .He alsonoted that because they are in the state capital, government has taken majority of their lands that they no longer have where to expand or farm .

He also encouraged that cooperative society should be formed where communities come together buy land elsewhere and cultivate yam.

Ex-minister Nnaji calls for preservation of Igbo culture
…as Edeaniagu celebrates New Yam Festival
Former Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji, has emphasized the importance of safeguarding indigenous traditions while embracing modernity, asserting that cultural continuity remains a cornerstone of national progress.
Speaking at the annual New Yam Festival of the Edeaniagu clan in Ishi-Ozalla Autonomous Community, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Prof. Nnaji highlighted the role of cultural heritage in shaping resilient societies.
He cited Japan as a model of development rooted in tradition, noting that cities like Kyoto preserve ancient shrines not as relics, but as living symbols of identity and values.
“We must not abandon our heritage simply because it has been undervalued by others,” he said. “As we evolve, we must retain the elements of our culture that fortify our collective psyche and sense of belonging.”
The festival, which drew traditional rulers from across Nkanu land, as well as indigenes from all 12 villages of the community, served as a vibrant celebration of unity and ancestral reverence.
His Royal Majesty, Igwe Don Sylvester Chinedu Nweke, the traditional ruler of Edeaniagu, described the event as a sacred thanksgiving to God and the ancestors.
While expressing gratitude for the strong turnout, he also drew attention to the community’s infrastructural needs, particularly road conditions.
Despite past challenges, the monarch noted that the community had made progress through self-help projects such as the construction of a mini-stadium, boreholes, public sanitation facilities, and the restoration of electricity. He expressed hope that Governor Peter Mbah’s administration would extend more development initiatives to Edeaniagu.
“I live among my people, not in the corridors of power. Their trust in me is what drives my service,” he affirmed. Also speaking at the event, Professor Munachimso Nweke-Okoye, a scholar and native of the community, reflected on the deeper symbolism of the New Yam Festival. She described it as both a spiritual covenant with the land and a celebration of ancestral virtues such as generosity and protection of the vulnerable.
“The Feast of the Soil reminds us that acts of goodwill yield harvests of peace and abundance,” she said, urging the community to uphold principles of justice, unity, and sustainability.
The festival featured traditional performances, communal feasting, and a renewed call for inclusive development, particularly in the area of infrastructure.
2027 Presidency: I don’t need your counsel, Jonathan tells Keyamo, Odinkalu
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticised Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo (SAN), and legal scholar, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, for opposing his speculated 2027 presidential ambition, warning them to stay away from his political decisions.
Keyamo and Odinkalu had urged the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to hand its ticket to Jonathan, arguing that his return bid would face legal obstacles since he had already been sworn in twice as president.
But in a statement issued yesterday by his brother, Azibaola Robert, Jonathan dismissed their concerns, stressing that his eligibility was not in doubt and that he did not need unsolicited advice.
Robert, writing on his verified Facebook page, said: “Dear Festus Keyamo (SAN), Chidi Odinkalu (Prof.), I greet both of you. For the records, three of us are lawyers. We were all pro-democracy activists in the 90s, and I was a better activist than both of you combined.
“Rule No. 1: Do not offer legal advice where none is solicited. GEJ (PDP) has numerous, more cerebral, more experienced SANs at his disposal who give him sound, unblemished professional legal advice.
“Please note: GEJ is 100percent constitutionally and legally qualified to contest, if he chooses to. If he decides not to yield to the overwhelming calls to run, it will not be because he is unqualified.
“Your unsolicited legal view is not of any concern to him and will never be. Don’t waste your precious time dwelling on this.
“Or should I schedule a meeting so you can be properly educated on the subsisting court judgments on the matter — one of which your party, APC, was a party to?”
Robert added, in a lighter tone: “This is not a confirmation that GEJ is running, though.”
Although Jonathan has yet to make a formal declaration on the 2027 race, his rumoured ambition has already drawn reactions from political opponents who argue that a return bid could jeopardise the South’s chances of retaining the presidency.
For now, it remains uncertain whether the former president will join the race, but the early debates signal an intensifying battle over zoning, eligibility, and succession ahead of the 2027 elections.
ONSA debunks El-Rufai’s claim of ransom payments to bandits
Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, has dismissed as false the claim by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, that the government pays incentives to bandits.
Mr El-Rufai had alleged in a television interview on Sunday that the ONSA coordinates a policy of ransom payments and inducements to criminal groups.
In a statement by Zakari Mijinyawa yesterday in Abuja, the ONSA described the allegation as baseless and contrary to facts on the ground.
“At no time has ONSA, or any arm of government under this administration, engaged in ransom payments or inducements to criminals,” he said.
Mr Mijinyawa explained that the government had instead warned citizens against paying ransom, stressing that such actions only embolden criminal elements.
He said the administration adopted a dual strategy of kinetic military operations and community engagement, which had yielded positive results in Kaduna State.
He noted that communities in Igabi, Birnin Gwari and Giwa local government areas, once under siege, were now enjoying relative peace due to sustained military action.
According to him, security forces have eliminated several notorious bandit leaders, including Boderi, Baleri, Sani Yellow Janburos, Buhari and Boka, while leaders of Ansaru who attempted to establish bases in Kaduna had been apprehended.
“These victories were not without sacrifices as some of our gallant officers paid the supreme price,” he said.
Mr Mijinyawa said it was unfair for a former governor to downplay such sacrifices, and urged political actors to refrain from dragging national security institutions into partisan debates.
“The fight against banditry is a collective struggle, not a platform for political point-scoring,” he added.
2027: Bring back Peter Obi if you want PDP destroyed – Wike tells Bauchi Gov
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has warned Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State against bringing former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, back to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Wike issued the warning during a media parley yesterday in Abuja.
He was reacting to comments made by Bauchi governor, who is the Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, during an interview on Channels Television.
Bala Mohammed said PDP was considering Obi and former President Goodluck Jonathan for its 2027 presidential ticket.
Wike said bringing Obi back to the PDP and giving him the presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections would destroy the party.
He said, “Bringing Obi to where? You want to kill the party? Obi that was abusing the party, saying it is rotten — so the party is now good enough for him? Ambition can make people even go to Satan’s house.”
Tinubu’s economic policies tough but necessary – MAN
Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, has stated that even though the current economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration have brought tough times to Nigerians and their businesses, yet they are necessary and welcomed.
Chairman of MAN in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, Dr. Adoga Inalegwu, stated this in Calabar over the weekend after a familiarization visit to member companies in Calabar.
“I think President Bola Tinubu’s policies are necessary and tough decisions that Nigeria needs presently. This is because if we keep deceiving ourselves that everything is the way it should be, if we keep palliating ourselves, we will never solve our problems.”
“So he has made very bold moves. Okay, look at, people complain about the tax reform. Tax reform has its pros and cons.
“One of the fundamental advantages it posits for manufacturers is shrinking, reducing the basket of multiple tax issues that we are faced with. So that for me is important. And also the fact that he has tried to improve the disposable income of the population.”
The MAN boss, however, stated that they are not satisfied with the high exchange rate of a little over N1,500 to one dollar in recent times but are nevertheless happy that it has been stable for some time.
“We are not satisfied with the exchange rate, but we are happy with the stability. We are also happy that it is not just stable, the dollar is also available.
“We no longer struggle to source for Forex. In 2023, I am the one that knows how much I suffered in sourcing for Forex. I suffered big time.”
In spite of the stability, he said MAN members still import materials from abroad as inputs into their manufacturing process at double the former costs due to high Forex issues. “The good news is that Forex has had some bit of stability.”
According to him, the economic policies may not be perfect, but things are looking up even though it is not all a completely perfect story.
He stated that their member companies have learnt to adapt to the difficult times.
“This doesn’t mean that there are no member companies that are not bearing the brunt of the times.
“When times are difficult, you have to evolve strategies to survive. And not just to survive, but also to thrive.
“Nigerian manufacturers can still be resilient, can still be ambitious, can still be forward-thinking, even when things are not very rosy.”
Inalegwu expressed unhappiness in the increase in Value Added Tax, VAT, by 2.5 percent, saying that it is really significant, impacting against many firms.
“The magnitude of the increase to many firms that spend billions is significant enough. One way or the other, it will impact on revenues. I’m not happy with that.”
FCT Head of Service, Adayilo is dead
The Head of Civil Service for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mrs. Grace Adayilo, has died.
Mrs. Adayilo reportedly slumped and passed out early Monday morning.
The cause of her death is yet to be known.
It would be recalled that President Bola Tinubu had approved Mrs. Adayilo’s appointment as the first female and indigenous Head of Service of the FCT in October last year.
She was an indigene of Abuja and the first person ever to occupy the position in the FCT Administration.
Her last official engagement was on Thursday where she represented the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike at the G7 security meeting in Abuja.
Court has not declared Rivers LG poll Illegal – Wike replies Atiku, Obi
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has replied Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, stressing that the court has not declared the Rivers State local government election illegal.
Atiku and Obi had in separate statements described the exercise as unlawful.
Wike, while speaking during a media parley yesterday, said the polls were legally conducted and commended by many for being free and fair.
“Listen, I don’t blame Atiku; he didn’t know that his boss signed the emergency rule in 2004. If he knew, if he was obedient and working along with his boss, who was President Olusegun Obasanjo, he would have known that the President has the power to make regulations for the governance of emergency areas.
“So, he was not in tune. He doesn’t know, and as I said, what you don’t know, don’t comment about it. If Atiku had comments about Customs, I know he has worked in Customs. I can give it to him, but this is law.”
The minister added that Obi lacked the moral right to speak about the conduct of elections.
“Now take Peter Obi. He said rascality. Who can be more [of a] rascal than Obi? Obi was the governor of Anambra State for eight years. He conducted local government elections two months before he left office eight years as governor.”
Simon Ekpa: IPOB reacts to conviction of self-acclaimed Biafran leader by Finland
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has distanced itself from the recent conviction of Simon Ekpa in Finland, stressing that his activities have no connection with the group.
The group accused the Nigerian government of launching a smear campaign to discredit its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB described the reported attempt to link Ekpa to its movement as “a brazen fraud against truth and justice.”
The group said, “The world must know that the question of Simon Ekpa’s non-membership in IPOB is already judicially settled in Finland,” the group declared.
According to the group, it had, alongside Simon Ekpa, testified in a Finnish court where it was made clear that he had no ties to the organization.
“IPOB under oath in a Finnish court testified that Simon Ekpa has never held any position in IPOB or ESN. Ekpa himself under oath described himself merely as a ‘content creator,’ admitted he disowned IPOB, and boasted that he would destroy IPOB,” the statement said.
The group further accused Ekpa of creating parallel structures in contradiction to IPOB’s ideology
“Ekpa created his own contraptions: ‘Biafra Government in Exile,’ ‘Biafra Liberation Army (BLA),’ and ‘Biafra Defence Force, BDF,’ all of which, IPOB repudiated and condemned,” it added.
It insisted that any attempt to associate Ekpa’s conviction with IPOB amounted to “deliberate misinformation a calculated lie, knowingly repeated to deceive.”
IPOB alleged that the Federal Government was deliberately using Ekpa’s case as a diversionary tactic to influence judicial proceedings in the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, whose no-case submission ruling before Justice James Omotosho has been adjourned until October 10, 2025.
“The Nigerian state is orchestrating this smear campaign as a diversionary tactic, timed precisely to contaminate the upcoming ruling on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s no-case submission.
“Why the unexplained delay in delivering judgment when the Federal Government has failed to establish even a prima facie case?
“The answer is obvious: they are buying time to inject irrelevant and extraneous narratives like Ekpa’s conviction, in a bid to corrupt judicial reasoning,” IPOB alleged.
It described the adjournment as “judicial hostage-taking, a weaponization of the courts to sustain persecution.”
The group also appealed to foreign governments and institutions, including the European Union, Finland, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations, to intervene in the matter.
“The Finnish court exonerated IPOB of any link to Simon Ekpa. We demand clarity be issued to Nigeria to stop this malicious misuse,” the group urged.
Addressing Western nations, IPOB said: “You have both condemned Nigeria’s extraordinary rendition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya. If you are true to your principles, you must also condemn this latest charade — an attempt to derail a fair trial by importing lies.”
It further called on the United Nations to act, warning that “the Nigerian government is persecuting a self-determination leader in violation of the UN Charter. Silence in the face of a weaponized judiciary is complicity.”
Reaffirming its position, IPOB insisted that Simon Ekpa must bear his own burden.
“Simon Ekpa’s conviction is his burden and his alone. IPOB will never carry it. IPOB is a peaceful movement registered under international law, committed to lawful self-determination.
“This case in Abuja is not about IPOB’s legitimacy; it is about the persecution of one man — Mazi Nnamdi Kanu — for daring to demand freedom through peaceful means,” the group declared.
IPOB said Nigeria risked further damage to its image if it continued to misrepresent facts.
“Nigeria stands today at the bar of world opinion. Persist in this fraud, and you confirm yourselves a rogue state where the rule of law is dead,” it added.
Biafra: Justice well served – Nigerian govt hails conviction of Simon Ekpa in Finland
The Federal Government has welcomed the landmark judgment of the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland, which yesterday, sentenced Simon Ekpa, a self-styled pro-Biafra agitator, to six years’ imprisonment for terrorism offences.
The government said the ruling stands as a watershed moment, not only for the countless innocent Nigerians whose lives and livelihoods were brutally disrupted by the reign of terror incited and financed by Ekpa and his collaborators but also for the strengthening of bilateral relations between Nigeria and Finland.
A statement signed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said for years, Ekpa’s reckless incitement and orchestration of violence through IPOB terror activities unleashed unspeakable pain on Nigeria.
”Families shattered, businesses destroyed, children orphaned, and entire communities forced to live under fear. Hundreds of lives were lost, and many more maimed, in pursuit of a destructive and unlawful agenda that sought to undermine the peace, unity, and sovereignty of our nation.
“By upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served, the Finnish judiciary has not only vindicated Nigeria’s consistent position on this matter but also sent a clear signal to extremists everywhere that the world is watching, and justice will catch up with those who seek to destabilize societies through terror,” the statement added.
The statement noted that the Tinubu administration remains unshakable in its resolve to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty and protect the dignity of every citizen.
“We will continue to mobilize every resource, diplomatic, military, and judicial, to preserve the peace, unity, and territorial integrity of our country,” it added.
“We urge all those who, under the misguidance of Simon Ekpa and others, have taken up arms against their fatherland to immediately lay them down and embrace the path of peace.
“Nigeria is big enough for all its people, but there can be no progress where violence and division prevail.
“The Federal Government also extends its profound gratitude to the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the security and intelligence agencies, and the Federal Ministry of Justice and the Nigeria Police, whose sacrifices, courage, and commitment continue to secure our homeland in the face of daunting challenges.
“Their service and the resilience of the Nigerian people remain the backbone of our enduring unity.
“As we mark this turning point, the Federal Government enjoins all Nigerians, at home and abroad, to work together for national unity, peace, and security of the country.”

Northern CAN Condemns killing of woman over blasphemy claim
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states has condemned the brutal killing of a female food seller, Ammaye, in the Mariga local government Area of Niger State.
The woman was stoned to death by a mob of angry youths over alleged blasphemous statement against Prophet Muhammad.
The Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. John Hayab, in an interview, described the act as dastardly and disgraceful, calling on the Niger State government to immediately arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.
Rev. Hayab blame the failure of the justice system and religious leaders for allowing such acts to persist.
“These people must be fetched and arrested. The government of Niger state must insist that the Commissioner of Police should produce those who did this evil. And let the people see that these people are taken to court, and justice is done,” he said.
He noted that this would make potential perpetrators of such evil to desist if invited to participate in such act in the future.
“All that has happened in different parts of Nigeria, we just play games and just talk about it,” he said.
He emphasised the shared humanity of all Nigerians, stating, “At least here, they will not be saying that because she is a Christians, even if she is a Muslim, she is a human being.
“We cannot allow our citizens to be going through this kind of terrible inhuman treatment from each other because some people are trying to be fanatical, to show other people that they love God more than others. All of us love God,” he said.
Hayab described recurring issue of such killing as a serious indictment on all religious leaders, lamenting that followers have not been taught well enough to understand that killing is wrong.
“People cannot just be taking things into their hands and every day killing fellow human beings and hide under blasphemy. It is also an indictment to our government.
“Because those who keep killing people, hiding under the hateful blasphemy of the Prophet have really never been arrested or brought to justice,” he said.
He challenged the legal basis for such killings, asking, “Where in our law did we permit you to kill someone because he said something negative about your religion or your identity or your faith or your deity? That should not be allowed in a civilised community.”
The Northern CAN chairman called for a dual approach to solving the problem, that religious leaders must teach tolerance, and the government must enforce the law without fear or favour.
“The challenge is now back to us as religious leaders to seriously teach our people, and show them that this act is itself against our faith and then the government to act without delay to arrest those who perpetrate this evil,” he said.
He warned against the pressure often applied to free suspects, saying, “Once such people are arrested, the same religious leaders will go, put pressure on the police, put pressure on either the court or government and ensure that those who make such blasphemous statements are released. They are supposed to be brought to justice.”
Hayab appealed for action, insisting that this case must not be like others that are forgotten. “I think this one should be one that we should take strong action, not just condemning it, but go after the perpetrators and let justice be done,” he said.
LEADERSHIP recalls that the incident occurred at Kasuwan Garba town in Niger State when the woman, identified as Amaye allegedly made blasphemous statement at her restaurant after a customer jokingly expressed interest in marrying her, citing the tradition of the Prophet.
The matter was taken to the palace of the District Head of Kasuwan Garba, where the victim allegedly repeated the statement.
While the District Head handed her over to security operatives for investigation, an agitated mob overpowered them and stoned her to death.

2027 presidential ticket open to all despite Tinubu endorsement, says APC
The ruling All Progressives Congress has clarified that, despite the widespread endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, other party members interested in the presidency will still be free to contest for the party’s ticket during the primaries.
APC’s National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Mohammad Argungu, disclosed this yesterday at an interactive session with journalists at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
He reaffirmed that the party’s leadership, including the National Working Committee, the Progressives Governors Forum led by Senator Hope Uzodinma, and the National Assembly leadership under Senator Godswill Akpabio, had endorsed President Tinubu for re-election in recognition of his outstanding performance.
However, Argungu stressed that the APC, being a party committed to democratic principles, would not deny any aspirant the chance to challenge Tinubu for the ticket in a free and open primary election.
He stated, “We will definitely not close our doors (other Presidential aspirants). When the time comes, our timetable will be made known. Anybody who wants to aspire for the presidency under the APC will not be denied the opportunity to purchase the expression of interest and nomination forms to exercise their franchise.
“We never said we had locked the door. We are only telling people that we appreciate what the President is doing for the people of the country and that he deserves a second term in office when we roundly endorsed him recently.”
The Sokoto-born politician spoke in reaction to the question of whether the APC would emulate the Peoples Democratic Party, which printed just one form and reserved it specially for the then-President Goodluck Jonathan to vie as the sole Presidential aspirant in October 2014.
Responding to the party’s performance in the recent by-election, the APC National Organising Secretary attributed the victory in 13 out of 16 contested seats to the grace of Almighty Allah and the dedication of the party’s leaders, members, and supporters across the country.
He stated, “This is a remarkable achievement and a reaffirmation of the confidence Nigerians continue to repose in the APC.
“These victories are not just statistics; they are a reaffirmation of the trust Nigerians continue to place in the APC. They demonstrate the strength, resilience, and growing acceptance of our party nationwide.
“They reflect the belief of the Nigerian people in our capacity to deliver purposeful leadership and good governance.”
2027: PDP’s zoning to south grave error, deliberate mischief – Party stakeholder, Fabiyi
A stakeholder of the Peoples Democratic Party, Oladimeji Fabiyi, has described the party’s zoning of the presidential ticket to the southern part of the country as a grave error and deliberate mischief.
Fabiyi made this statement yesterday while responding to questions in an interview on The Morning Brief, a programme on Channels Television.
“As a member of the PDP for quite a long time, who truly understood the trajectory of PDP, I think what PDP did on this zoning thing was a grave error, and it was deliberate mischief.
“And I say this with some sense of responsibility, because I understand the trajectory of this party very well, and in the next weeks, months, we’ll see what will play out as a result of this decision. It will really destabilize the party, to bury the party.
“In the history of PDP, we knew how zoning arrangements had already been managed. Zoning has never been a problem of the PDP. It has never been, except now that we have these few individuals, these few leaders, who believe, because they want to satisfy their selfish interest, [they] made zoning agitation an issue. As far as I know in the PDP, zoning has never been an issue,” he said.
Zoning: PDP has accepted three positions Wike canvassed – Lere Olayinka
Lere Olayinka, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, yesterday insisted that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accepted three positions the minister canvassed since 2022.
Olayinka said PDP would not have experienced leadership crisis if it had listened to Wike’s clamour in the past.
He spoke against the backdrop of the outcome of the PDP’s National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting .
During the NEC meeting, PDP zoned its presidential ticket to the South, National Chairman to the North, among other resolutions.
Reacting in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Olayinka said: “Wike’s position in 2022, if they had listened to him probably the party won’t be where it is today. Three positions that he canvassed which the party said no and it has accepted those three positions now.
“First, on the issue of zoning, he canvassed three years ago, the issue of National Secretary of the party – he kept saying that you can’t do anything outside what the constitution of the party said. Sam Anyanwu, you can’t remove him as National Secretary except he resigns which he did not.
“The party after going back and forth, after a lot of damages have been done, came back to say that we agree with you.
“Thirdly, Wike said you can’t remove and take away the position of the Deputy National Chairman, North, as it was because the constitution of the party said when the Chairman resigns or dies, the Deputy National Chairman of that zone takes over in acting capacity.
“It also stipulated where national officers of the party should emerge from…. Three positions he canvassed for that the party said he was wrong have been accepted by the party. On these three issues now he has been right and he has also asked a fundamental question. Is it not now too late?”
2027: Peter Obi wants PDP presidential ticket without primary election – Atiku’s ally, Sowunmi
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and an ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi has alleged that Peter Obi wants the party’s presidential ticket without participating in a primary election.
Sowunmi made the claim yesterday. He also declared that PDP owes the Igbos a debt.
In an interview on Nigeria Info FM 99.3, Sowunmi recalled urging Obi to return to the PDP due to the debt the party owe South-East.
He spoke after PDP zoned its presidential ticket to the South during its National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting in Abuja.
Sowunmi said: “Peter is someone who doesn’t listen, I told him more than three, four months ago that Peter the time now is to return because the PDP owes the South-East a debt.
“The PDP owes the South-East a debt based on the fact that they have given every other tribe the ticket except the Igbos and you have demonstrated capacity.
“The only thing there is that Peter thinks he’s too clever, he never wants to do primaries. Anybody that doesn’t want to do primaries is looking for somebody to cheat on his behalf.
“Primaries is the internal democracy of parties, it’s only when you cross the hurdles of primaries that you can now be looking at the general election.
“But unfortunately, when they gave him a platform to manage like Labour, he could not manage it. Nigeria cannot be waiting for Peter, if Peter can’t be President as an Igbo person, one day we will find an Igbo person.”
Lack of unity has exposed Igbos to ridicule, marginalisation – Chekwas Okorie
The founder and pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Chief Chekwas Okorie, said lack of cohesion and unity of purpose has exposed the Igbo nation to very embarrassing ridicule, disrespect, alienation and marginalisation by their contemporaries.
Okorie, who spoke at the Igbo Agenda Dialogue held in Abuja yesterday, pointed out that the contemporaries of the Igbo have managed to be in control of the lever of political power and commanding heights of Nigerian economy and bureaucracy.
He said the time has come when holding back from calling Igbo leaders together to join hands to salvage their people is no longer tenable.
“Things came to a most worrisome head when a former president of Nigeria while presiding over the affairs of the country described us as a dot in a circle, which in a sense implies that we are few and landlocked,” Okorie said.
“The true position as is well known even by the person that mocked us in that manner is that there is no ethnic nationality in Nigeria that has greater access to the sea than the Igbo Nation.
“Following the advent of the Igbo Forum in 1976, which metamorphosed into Ohanaeze Ndigbo in 1979, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, who was our patron then, repeatedly cautioned during our meetings that the worst thing that usually happened to any race that lost a war was the loss of self-esteem,” he recalled.
“He[Azikiwe] further said that it would take several decades of conscientious focused leadership to recover from the loss of self-esteem.
“I remember those inimitable words when I watch with sadness and embarrassment the sycophantic, subservient, and condescending posturing of some of our leaders just to get by in a country where we are supposed to be equal stakeholders. Some even disown their identities as Igbo to escape oppression by those in power. It is now 55 years since the Biafra/Nigeria fratricidal war ended. Now is the time to redeem, reassert, and reclaim our inalienable rights in Nigeria.
“We are unarguably the ethnic nationality with the largest population in Nigeria. Our geographical spread in this vast country is second to none. We are easily the second largest population of practically all the states of Nigeria and about 99percent of the population of the South East geo-political zone.
“Similarly, studies have proved that we constitute a minimum of 25percent of the voting population of all the States of Nigeria including the Federal Capital Territory.
“In view of the nature of democratic practice in Nigeria, the majority of votes and its component geographical spread are the critical factors that determine electoral victory in our elections. It stands to reason that if we put our acts together nobody will win a presidential election in Nigeria without sitting down with the Igbo to agree on the terms of engagement.
“Some of us who witnessed and can recollect the various democratic dispensations in Nigeria from the First Republic to the present time will agree without argument that Ndigbo were better off in the First and Second Republics when the then Northern People’s Congress, NPC, and the National Council of Nigerian Citizens, NCNC, formed a coalition government, and the National Party of Nigeria, NPN, and Nigerian Peoples Party, NPP, formed an accord (another form of a coalition government) respectively. In fact, in the Second Republic, an Igbo man was the Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme of the NPN, and another Igbo man, Chief Edwin Umezuoke of the NPP was the Speaker of the House of Representatives as a result of that accord.
“That combination has not been replicated since that time. It could also be recalled that the coalition of the NPC – NCNC facilitated the creation of the Midwestern Region in spite of the vehement opposition of the Action Group, AG, at that time.
Permit me to cite yet another interesting example of what Igbo political unity can achieve and juxtapose it with what our lack of participation can deny us.
“In the case of a race, like the Igbo race, while Igbo cannot force anybody to love us but we can earn the respect of others or adorne the aura Igbo people are known for that elicits both fear and respect for us. Any race that is neither loved nor respected is not worth its name.
“It is generally said that heaven helps those who help themselves. In the case of Ndigbo in Nigeria, God has already blessed us with huge population, geographical spread and unrivalled human resources. We are the ones holding ourselves back. We can resolve today that we can unite and join hands to redeem ourselves and live to witness the inevitable resurgence of Ndigbo in Nigeria and assume our rightful place in Nigeria’s political space.”

ADC Crisis: I’m authentic National Chairman, I’ve resumed office – Nafiu Bala
The leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress, ADC, took a new twist yesterday, as Nafiu Bala assumed office as the National Chairman of the party.
Addressing the press at her resumption, Bala described himself as the authentic National Chairman of the ADC.
He explained that the electoral act and ADC’s constitution put him as the natural successor after Ralph Nwosu resigned as the party’s National Chairman.
Nwosu had resigned from his position after the opposition coalition adopted ADC, a few months ago.
Upon Nwosu’s resignation, David Mark was appointed as the Interim National Chairman of the party.
But Bala, who is the Deputy National Chairman had accused the coalition leaders like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of hijacking the ADC.
However, Bala said: “As our party’s National leadership, we are not aware of any change of leadership.
“Our party’s former National chairman voluntarily resigned his position as the national Chairman of the party.
“Our party’s constitution is very clear on the transfer of power or what we can do when the party’s national chairman resigns.
“As far as our party is concerned, the electoral act and our party constitution said the deputy National Chairman can takeover the leadership of the party.
“I now resume office as the authentic National Chairman of our great party, the African Democratic Congress, APC.”
