Investigate allegations of ethnic cleansing against Igbos by Nigerian Army –-HURIWA to UN

South East

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA), has urgently called for an investigation by the United Nations Human Rights Council, (UNHRC), into the allegations of genocide against the Igbo people by the Nigerian Army.

The group emphasized that the accusations levelled by the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) against the Army are not entirely baseless, highlighting the need for an impartial and independent investigation into the matter.

HURIWA’s call comes amid escalating concerns over the spate of kidnappings and violence in the South-East geo-political region, particularly in the Ihiala axis of Anambra State, which has been dubbed the ‘Sambisa Forest of the South-East’.

“The dense forests in this region have reportedly become notorious for harbouring criminal elements, including kidnappers, who have turned these areas into terror zones. Victims who manage to survive the ordeal recount harrowing experiences, including torture, maiming, and in some cases, death even after ransom payments.

“The dead bodies of those less fortunate, along with their personal belongings, often litter the forests where they were held captive.

“These kidnappers reportedly operate with impunity in areas like Ihiala, Lilu, Orsumoghu, and other surrounding communities, despite efforts by security agents to comb the forests and engage in gun battles with the criminals. The vast forest stretch, known locally as ‘Mother Valley’ and other nicknames, spans over 700 hectares and is largely inaccessible, making it a haven for these criminal activities.

“Residents live in constant fear, with some communities abandoned or deserted due to the persistent threat posed by these criminal elements”.

In a Press statement, HURIWA revealed that it has consistently supported the Nigerian government’s efforts to restore peace and stability in the South-East.

The organization acknowledged the devastating impact of the ongoing violence, which has led to widespread loss of lives and destruction of property.

However, HURIWA is deeply concerned about the methods employed by security agencies, which have allegedly resulted in the indiscriminate killing of innocent Igbo youths under the pretext of hunting down IPOB members.

The rights group pointed out that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which should ideally conduct such investigations in Nigeria, lacks the independence required for an impartial investigation.

HURIWA argued that the NHRC, a federal government agency, is not in a position to assess the situation objectively, hence the need for a high-powered investigative team from the UNHRC.

While HURIWA supports the federal government’s initiative to restore security and stability in the South-East, it stresses that the government must also protect innocent civilians.

The group condemned the killing of security personnel and attacks on national security assets but raised concerns about the lack of clarity regarding the identities of those responsible for these attacks.

“Each time an attack occurs, the Nigerian Armed Forces are quick to blame IPOB, but the official IPOB leadership often denies involvement.

“In some instances, factions within IPOB, which the mainstream group has distanced itself from, claim responsibility. This confusion underscores the need for a thorough investigation to ascertain the truth”.

Child Labour: 13-year-old spotted selling tickets to tricycle operators

A 13-year-old boy simply identified as Christian has been seen selling tickets to commercial tricycle operators at Jigbale market in Udu LGA of Delta State.

The development has raised concerns about child labour, with many questioning how a kid could be subjected to such exploitation.

According to eyewitnesses, Christian was seen standing by the roadside, selling tickets to tricycle operators, who ply their trade in the area.

When approached, the young boy revealed that he had been forced to take up the job to support his family.

This incident is a clear violation of the provisions of the Child Rights Act, which prohibits the exploitation of children in any form.

Section 28 of the Act states that “no child shall be subjected to any form of exploitation, including economic exploitation”.

A child rights expert, Comrade Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho condemned the development, stating that “it is unacceptable for a child to be subjected to such exploitation”.

“The government must take immediate action to protect the rights of children and ensure that they are not forced into labour,” he added.

The Delta State Government has been called upon to investigate the incident and take necessary steps to protect Christian and other children from similar exploitation.

Reps to look into cases of unfunded agencies, salary delays

HOUSE OF REPS

The House of Representatives on Thursday promised to look into the cases of unfunded federal agencies created by the Act of Parliament.

The Chairman of the Special Committee on the Restructuring of Federal Agencies, Commissions, and Parastatals, Ibrahim Isiaka, disclosed this to journalists on Thursday in Abuja.

He said the agencies or commissions created by the Act of Parliament would not be merged without recourse to amendments of the Act that created them.

Isiaka said: “This is the position of the law, and the only arms of government that can alter or amend the law is the parliament, even at the state level.

He, however, noted that if such agencies were mere departments created by the federal government and did not pass through parliament, the government had the power to alter them without recourse to the National Assembly.

The lawmaker expressed concern about reports of salary delays in some agencies, including the Nigeria Press Council (NPC) and other agencies under the Ministry of Health.

“Away from that, any agency concerned should bring the Act that established it because there are so many agencies that were created,” he added.

He called for an examination of the funding structure of such agencies, noting some were created with the promise of self-sufficiency.

FG urges resident doctors to call off strike as kidnapped colleague’s rescue efforts intensify

The Federal Government has made a passionate appeal to the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to call-off their seven-day warning strike, as negotiations for the release of their kidnapped colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, has reached a critical stage.

Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the plea on Thursday during a visit to the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, emphasizing government’s commitment to ensuring Popoola’s safe return.

Alausa revealed that high-level discussions were underway, involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Commissioner of Police, to secure Popoola’s release. He expressed optimism, stating, “We are on top of the matter… everyone is working hard to see that she is released.

“We don’t believe this warning strike will do anything. All hands are on deck to secure her release.

“For the past two days, we know she is alive and that’s good news for us as the security are working hard to bring her back alive,” he said.

The minister had previously met with NARD leadership on Monday, urging them to call off the strike, which he believes would only exacerbate the situation.

He assured that “all hands are on deck” to rescue Popoola, citing positive developments in the past two days, including confirmation of her being alive.

The government’s appeal comes as the nation’s healthcare system faces potential disruption from the resident doctors’ strike, amid concerns for Popoola’s safety and well-being.

University Don rallies support for Uzodinma …As Court cases are over

GOV UZODIMMA

The Dean, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Imo State University, Prof Victor Kogah has called on all the opposition parties in Imo State to sheath their sword and rally round the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma in his efforts to give the state good governance.

He said this had become necessary, as all litigations over the governor’s victory had come and done with.

Prof Kogah who spoke in Owerri, the state capital over the week, said the governor is doing well and that for him to do more all hands should be on deck, for him to continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

“To challenge election result is a normal process for those who are not satisfied with the result, but now that the supreme court has spoken, nobody should make other efforts on the negative side, rather everybody should join hand with the governor and help make the state a better place”.

He reminded politicians that the governor has a fixed tenure of office, and that at the expiration of his tenure he will quit, and go for higher position, ” definitely not to become the state governor again.

“That is why we should give him our support, so that we will have a better Imo State, in all ramifications”.

On the current economic hardship in Nigeria, the University Don described the situation as unfortunate, as most Nigerians can no longer effort three square meals any longer.

“It is not any particular governor’s affair, it is a general problem. I am rather of the opinion that it is God’s affair. At anytime God wants it to stop, it will definitely stop.

“My prayer is that with God the situation will soon be over. In the Holly Bible, we are told of cases of fermernine. We should rather see the situation as God’s business. If God wants it to stop today, it will surely stop”.

Demolition: Enugu resident cries out to Gov Mbah

Gov. Peter Mbah

A resident of Enugu State, Mr Ikechukwu Okeke, whose property worth millions of Naira was demolished earlier this year, has cried out again seeking Governor Peter Mbah’s intervention.

It would be recalled that the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA, had demolished structures at the Breathe Restaurant & Lounge located at Independence Avenue at Independence Layout, Enugu, citing alleged lack of title documentsHowever, following public outcry that greeted the exercise, the Enugu State Government promised to rebuild the facility immediately.

But six months later, work is yet to commence as promised by the government, prompting the open letter to the governor by the CEO, Mr Ikechukwu Okeke.

Okeke, who is from Anambra State, said Governor Mbah’s swift action then in approving the reconstruction of the structures, and the subsequent delivery of bags of cement, molded bricks, and tips of sand to the demolished site was proof of his commitment to justice and fairness.

He said, “This gesture, Your Excellency, rekindled hope not only in me but also in all those whose livelihoods depend on Breathe Restaurant and Lounge.

“Moreover, Your Excellency, I am compelled to acknowledge and commend your administration’s unwavering commitment to infrastructural development across Enugu State. “The remarkable progress achieved within such a short period since you assumed office is a clear fulfillment of the promises you made during your campaign.

“Your Excellency, it is with a heavy heart that I must bring to your attention the unfortunate reality that, despite your directives and the materials provided, work on the reconstruction of my business premises has yet to commence.

“Over six months have passed since your initial intervention, and the materials delivered by the government remain exposed to the elements, lying under the rain and sun.

“Your Excellency, I write to humbly appeal for your further intervention in this matter. The delay in commencing the reconstruction has caused immense hardship for me and all those who depend on Breathe Restaurant and Lounge.

“My business has been inoperative since March when the demolition occurred, and this prolonged period of inactivity has taken a severe toll on our lives.

“I earnestly plead that you kindly expedite the implementation of your instruction that work should commence immediately.

“Your Excellency, it pains me to say that in this period of despair, there have been whispers of victimization based on tribalism, suggesting that the delay in addressing my plight is because I am not originally from Enugu State.

“Such rumors, though distressing, have not swayed my faith in your administration’s commitment to justice and equity for all.

“Therefore, I once again appeal to your sense of fairness and humanity to ensure that the reconstruction of Breathe Restaurant and Lounge is promptly commenced as you so graciously promised.”

LGA Polls: APC settles for consensus for primary election

By Jennifer John…

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Imo State chapter, has settled for the option of consensus for the primary election of the party, ahead of the forthcoming local government election in the state.

The leader of the party in the state Governor Hope Uzodimma disclosed this during a stakeholders meeting of the party with the aspirants, at the Party Secretariat, Okigwe Road, Owerri, yesterday.

The Governor, who said the decision was reached after consultation with the State Chairman,  leaders and stakeholders of the party, however added that other options; direct or indirect primary may be considered, based on the peculiarities of local governments.

“But, if you agree that there is leadership, you must be in the position to make sacrifice. You win today, you may not win tomorrow, if you don’t win today, you may win tomorrow. So, where we are able to get consensus as a party, we go by consensus, but where it becomes difficult, we go into the contest”, he said.

The state number one citizen said the aspirants must go into the contest in the spirit of one family, bearing in mind that not all who expressed interest in one position or the other will succeed.

“So we must create an umbrella for accommodation, to accommodate winners and losers and work as a team, because we must be united to face those people outside our party”, he said.

South East govs, lawmakers move to resolve student loan hiccups

STUDENT LOAN

South-East governors and lawmakers representing the region in the National Assembly have stepped in to help students from the region benefit from the Federal Government’s student loan scheme.

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

Kalu assured students from the region that the issues would be resolved and they would soon be included in the Federal Government’s student loan programme.

The assurance followed concerns raised by the South-East caucus in the National Assembly over the alleged exclusion of the region after the Nigerian Education Loan Fund released the list of institutions eligible for the loan nationwide.

The release by NELFUND showed that institutions in the North took advantage of the programme, as well as those in the South-West and South-South.

However, no institution from the South-East had benefited from the fund initiated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The development generated reactions on social media, as NELFUND had to clarify that no institution in the southeast had done its verification on its platform.

In a statement on Monday, the Deputy Speaker noted that his office had engaged with the authorities responsible for the student loans and expressed optimism that the issue would be resolved in the coming days.

Kalu said during the engagements, it was identified that low student registration from the South-East and errors in completing relevant forms, such as missing Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board results, were the primary reasons for the region’s exclusion.

He noted that affected institutions in the South-East had since taken steps to address the issues.

“The governors of the region are also actively involved in increasing the number of participating students, and members of the National Assembly have been encouraged to reach out to their constituents for immediate compliance,” he said.

To raise awareness, he said his office had initiated several measures, including the production of jingles in English, Igbo, and Pidgin English, which would be aired on various radio stations across the region.

He said Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, had 2,543 eligible students, but none could apply due to missing JAMB numbers.

For Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, only 406 applications were submitted out of the 21,342 students.

In Abia State University, Uturu, there was no application from the 17,928 eligible students, while for the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with 40,769 eligible students, only 781 had applied.

In the University of Medical and Applied Sciences, Enugu, with 610 eligible students, only 34 applications were made while at the Federal Polytechnic, Ohodo, none of the nine eligible students applied.

Only 11 applications were received from the Federal College of Education, Eha-Amufu, out of 2,491 eligible students; Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo, had 930 applications from 19,221 eligible students, while Ebonyi State University with 15,622 eligible students had 331 applications.

There were 28 applications from David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Uburu, out of 831 eligible students, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana had 188 applications from 4,774 eligible students, while none of the 128 eligible students of the Federal College of Education, Isu, had applied.

In Imo State, there were 1,114 applications from the 27,371 eligible students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri; 14 applications from the 736 eligible students of the Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Umuagwo, while only 11 applied out of 1,109 eligible students of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, among others.

US donates 10,000 Mpox vaccine doses to Nigeria

The United States of America, on Tuesday, donated 10,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine to Nigeria.

Our correspondent gathered that Jynneos is the approved vaccine by the Food and Drug Administration for the prevention of smallpox and mpox in adults aged 18 years and older who are at risk of mpox infection.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, while speaking during the official handover of the mpox vaccine to Nigeria in Abuja, thanked the US government for the donation.

He stated that the Federal Government is committed to improving the well-being of Nigerians.

Pate, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Daju Kachollom, said, “This is a spirit of cooperation and collaboration through the years, and this vaccine will be of great help to us. The Federal Ministry of Health understands the importance of having a healthy nation, so all the policies that we implement and the collaborations are focused on ensuring our citizens’ health.

“The Minister emphasises that all health matters are important to him, and Nigeria is very fortunate to have such a dedicated Coordinating Minister and Dr Tunji Alausa as the Minister of State for Health. Together, we are transforming the health sector.

“Thank you for the 10,000 doses, and we look forward to receiving more. I also want to thank our development partners, USAID, PEPFAR, WHO, UNICEF, and all the UN organisations. Your collaboration is greatly appreciated, and this will significantly aid those in need.

“We all recognise the size of our population, and we must ensure that we address every disease, especially those that pose public health concerns. On this note, I would like to extend our gratitude.”

FG to shut errant filling stations as petrol hits N1,000/litre

FUEL SCARCITY

Many filling stations operated by independent oil marketers have now fixed the pump prices of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, at between N900 and N1,000/litre.

Owners of these stations seem not to care about the cost of the product at retail outlets operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company. Petrol prices at NNPC stations range from N568 to N617/litre. This often leads to queues at the stations.

As Nigerians raise concerns about the high cost of the commodity by independent petrol dealers, the Federal Government has also vowed to shut down filling stations that will be caught dispensing PMS at exorbitant rates.

It declared this through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, stressing that it was not in the interest of Nigerians for marketers to profiteer in the sales of PMS.

Independent oil marketers claimed that they’ve been buying petrol from private depot owners for as high as N850/litre since last week and that this was why the pump prices were high.

However, the spokesperson of the NMDPRA, George Ene-Ita, argued that the petrol price reports that the regulator gets from its officials at the depots were different.

“Our depot people see a different price because we ask them to publish the prices at the depots every day and it is not N850/litre. Our field agents at the depots give us a different figure,” he said.

When told that some filling stations operated by independent marketers in Lagos and many other states dispense their products for as high as N900 and N1,000/litre, the NMDPRA official said such outlets would be brought to book if apprehended.

“If we get these outlets, all we do is to try and shut them down, because NNPC is the company that brings in the product and they tell us how much they sell as their ex-depot prices to off-takers. And we sit down together and work out the margins and there is no way it should be that high,” Ene-Ita declared.

DSS, NIA: Rufai, Bichi responsible for Nnamdi Kanu’s extraordinary rendition –-Ejimakor

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Tuesday named two former top-ranking security officials responsible for the extraordinary rendition of the Biafra agitator.

Ejimakor stated that the immediate past Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai, and the ex-Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, were responsible for Kanu’s extraordinary rendition.

Kanu was extraordinarily renditioned from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021.

The IPOB leader had left Nigeria after being granted bail by Justice Binta Nyako of an Abuja Federal High Court.

Kanu fled Nigeria in 2017 after the Nigerian Army invaded his residence in the Afaraukwu area of Abia State.

After an extensive search, the IPOB leader was arrested and subjected to extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has replaced Rufai and Bichi with Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed and Adeola Ajayi.

However, posting on X, Ejimakor wrote: “Do you know that Ahmed Rufai, who just resigned as DG, NIA, and Yusuf Bichi, who was yesterday replaced as DG, DSS, were vicariously responsible for the extraordinary rendition of MAZI NNAMDI KANU? Who is next? #TouchNotMyAnointed.”

Group flays NASS education committees for excluding South-East universities from NELFUND disbursement

A pro-democracy group in Abia State, the Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), has criticized the two chambers of the National Assembly Education Committees for excluding South-East universities from the disbursement of loans to students across the 19 tertiary institutions under the recently launched Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

The group expressed concern over the silence maintained by the education committees of both chambers of parliament regarding the deliberate omission of the South-East from the loan scheme.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the group’s Executive Director, Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, and made available to newsmen.

According to the statement, the group finds it worrisome and regrettable that the only legislative intervention so far has come from the Southeast National Assembly caucus, even though the intervention of the whole house or the education committee of either chamber could have given the issue a national appeal, providing assurance to the people, particularly student applicants from the region, that there was no sinister plot to marginalize, exclude, or relegate them, as has been the case in the past.

The statement reads: “FENRAD recalls that during the Jonathan presidency, the Presidential Special Scholarship Scheme for Innovations and Development (PRESSID) was launched to place qualified first-class graduates of the nation on scholarship abroad, who were to be absorbed back into Nigeria’s cadre, forming the potential drivers and agents of development.

“Sadly for the region, when the Buhari presidency took office in 2015, the president stopped the scheme because the North was allegedly not adequately represented in the program. This was how Nigeria jettisoned competence for a parochial pursuit.

“FENRAD recalls that a majority of those affected by the scrapping of PRESSID were South Easterners who had already secured admission to further their studies in universities abroad. Had the criteria for qualification been based on catchment or quota, perhaps the scheme would not have been revoked.

“Following the unceremonious end of PRESSID, another tertiary education policy was inaugurated under Buhari, this time under the name: ‘Education for Change; Ministerial Plan 2018-2022.’ Under this policy, 10 specialized universities were built by the federal government across the thirty-six states in Nigeria in 2021, with none sited in the Southeast.

“This exclusion was later mitigated by the claim that the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), was to benefit from an ongoing federal government upgrade. Not much has been said about this upgrade years later.

“FENRAD also regrets that some universities in the Southeast have yet to complete their verification to enable them to have full access to NELFUND, with some Southeast universities like Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT), which did complete their verification, still experiencing technical glitches for weeks until Friday of last week when this matter had already dominated all news platforms.

Iceland volcano erupts on Reykjanes Peninsula

A volcano in Iceland erupted for the sixth time since December but the nation's meteorological office said its "vigor" had decreased by Friday. Photo courtesy of the Icelandic Met Office

Iceland’s meteorological office on Friday said that the vigor of an eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula had slowed after it erupted for the sixth time since December on Thursday.

The Icelandic Met Office said the activity was now “mostly confined” to the fissure that initially erupted and a second that opened north of the first one.

“Seismicity decreased rapidly after 4 a.m. However, ground extension continues north of Stora-Skogfell, which suggests that the eruption has not reached equilibrium,” the office added.

The new eruption east of Mount Sylingarfell is near the area of an eruption that happened in May. The Norwegian Meteorological Office and Iceland’s Civil Defense officials said they have teams investigating the latest incident.

The Met Office said Friday’s seismicity from the volcano has been “fairly stable” at the northern end of the eruptive fissure. The Iceland Coast Guard plans to conduct a flight over the area on Friday night.

Iceland’s Foreign Ministry said the volcanic activity so far has been limited to a localized area near the eruption site and does not present a threat to life and there have been no international or domestic flight disruptions.

French President Macron holds talks over forming new government

FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron held talks today with key political players in a bid to form a new government.

This comes after legislative elections last month resulted in no party winning the majority at the National Assembly, Frances lower house of parliament.

Mr Macron refused to appoint a new prime minister until the Paris Olympic Games were over, opting instead to continue with a caretaker administration from his own neoliberal coalition even though they came in second at the polls.

Members of the left-wing New Popular Front coalition that won the most seats nominated civil servant Lucie Castets for prime minister.

After Fridays meeting at the Elysee Palace, Ms Castets said that she was ready to govern, and ready for compromise to get things done.

Right-wing politicians also met Mr Macron on Friday, while National Rally leaders Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, who came third in the election but are the largest single party, are expected at the Elysee on Monday.

Mr Macrons office said he would name a prime minister based on these consultations, which are aimed at moving towards the broadest and most stable majority possible.

Ms Castets said that in her meeting with Mr Macron, he recognised that a message was sent by the French during the elections but seemed reluctant to allow an opposition party to form a government.

Marine Tondelier, the national secretary of the Green Party, said: We need a response by Tuesday.

There are urgent issues, and leaving weeks rolling by without facing them is grave and even irresponsible.

The New Popular Front, which includes the French Communist Party (PCF), France Unbowed, the Socialists and the Greens, has insisted that the prime minister should come out of their ranks as the largest group.

PCF national secretary Fabien Roussel said that the president agreed during the meeting that we are the only ones to have made a proposal for prime minister.

It is urgent that he appoints Lucie Castets as prime minister.

But right-wing lawmakers have made it clear that they would try to bring down any government that includes members from France Unbowed.

Mr Macron appears more keen to construct a coalition from the centre left to the traditional right.

Other names that have emerged in French media as potential prime ministerial candidates include former Socialist Party and ex-prime minister Bernard Cazeneuve and right-wing politician Michel Barnier, the European Unions chief negotiator for post-Brexit talks.

The French constitution gives the president sole power to name the prime minister.

Trump’s New Jersey club to host ‘awards gala’ for people involved in Jan. 6 riot

Pro-Trump rioters destroy network video gear as hundreds of others breach the security perimeter and penetrate the U.S. Capitol to protest against the Electoral College vote count that would certify President-elect Joe Biden as the winner in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021.

Former President Donald Trump’s club in New Jersey is planning to host an “awards gala” for people incarcerated for their role in a riot on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, including 20 choir members who contributed to the Justice for All charity song.

The Sept. 5 event will be hosted by a pro-Trump political action committee NEW GEN 47 and Vote Your Vision and will be held at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.

Trump is an invited guest, but a source told CNN that he had not accepted the invitation to speak.

Another invited guest is former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who has been indicted in Georgia on charges related to efforts to overturn Trump’s loss in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. MAGA influencer Anthony Raimondi also has been invited.

General admission tickets are $1,500 and a single VIP ticket costs $2,500. All donations were listed as tax deductible.

The event includes a raffle for a plaque commemorating the song Justice for All — a recording made by individuals who have been convicted for their roles in the Jan. 6 riot — reaching platinum status on the Billboard Music chart in March 2023.

The song includes the choir singing The Star-Spangled Banner and Trump reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

“This event is not just a celebration of the song’s success but also an opportunity to show our support and solidarity,” according to information on The American Project website.

“This gala also serves as a crucial fundraiser to provide much-needed assistance to the January 6th defendants who continue to face significant challenges.”

He has referred to those jailed for their role in the riot as “hostages.”

More than 1,230 people have been charged with federal crimes in the riot.

Trump has said he would pardon some rioters if he becomes president again.

“Oh, absolutely, I would. If they’re innocent, I would pardon them,” Trump said at the National Association of Black Journalists conference in Chicago last month. “They were convicted by a very tough system.”

India ready to help find peace, Modi tells Ukraine

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi greets Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi during official meeting on August 23, 2024 in Kyiv, Ukraine

The two leaders greeted each other in Kyiv with an embrace

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid a historic visit to Ukraine, telling President Volodymyr Zelensky he is prepared to play a personal role to bring peace.

The Indian leader was criticised by President Zelensky last month when he hugged Russia’s President Vladimir Putin during a trip to Moscow on a day of deadly Russian strikes, including one on Kyiv’s biggest children’s hospital.

Mr Modi, 73, said he had told Mr Putin that problems could not be solved on the battlefield.

“Both sides will have to sit together and to look for ways to come out of this crisis,” he said after meetings in Kyiv.

Mr Modi arrived in the Ukrainian capital by train from Poland, the first international leader to visit since Ukraine forces crossed into Russia’s Kursk region in early August, seizing more than 1,250 sq km of territory, according to the military.

Six weeks ago, President Zelensky had spoken of his huge disappointment at watching Mr Modi warmly hug the Russian leader.

On Friday it was the Ukrainian leader’s turn to be embraced by Mr Modi although it appeared a more awkward greeting. Mr Zelensky appeared to frown, but equally it may have been the sun in his eyes.

Smiles were few and far between.

Diplomatic tightrope for Modi as he visits Kyiv after Moscow

More than 40 people had died in Russian strikes on the day Mr Modi had visited Moscow. Okhmatdyt childrens hospital in Kyiv took a direct hit.

It was surely no coincidence that the first place Mr Modi was taken on Friday was Ukraines history museum where he was invited to watch an exhibition remembering all of the 570 Ukrainian children reported to have been killed since Russias full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Both leaders crouched down to place soft toys at a makeshift shrine, and Indias prime minister said later his heart was filled with grief at the young people martyred in the war.

At one point he put his arm around the Ukrainian president’s shoulders – an image posted on Mr Modi’s social media account with the message that his heart went out to the families of children who had died.

Later on came his personal offer to help initiate peace talks, with Mr Modi stressing only dialogue and diplomacy would end the fighting.

India had never been neutral in the war, he insisted. “Right from the first day our side was peace,” Mr Modi argued, pointing out that he came from the land of Mahatma Gandhi, whose statue in Kyiv he visited earlier.

But behind the language, the fact remains that India has never condemned Russias full scale invasion and, in effect, has been helping to power Moscows war economy with Delhi overtaking Beijing last month as the biggest importer of Russian oil at a time it has been hit by Western sanctions.

Mr Modi and President Zelensky discussed Ukraines ongoing incursion into Russian territory, although the content of that specific conversation is not known.

India did take part in a Ukraine-led peace summit in Switzerland in June, to which Russia was not invited, and Mr Zelensky urged Mr Modi to sign up to a joint communique that highlighted the territorial integrity of Ukraine and all other states.

However, he thanked his visitor for supporting our sovereignty and territorial integrity, a sentiment that Mr Modi repeated shortly afterwards as both men hailed it an historic day.

They went on to release a joint statement, pledging to build on the two countries relations in defence and trade.

27 killed after bus with Indian pilgrims drives off Nepal highway

Nepal Armed Police Force are seen carrying out rescue operation after a bus transporting Indian pilgrims fell into a river near Abukhaireni town, about 75 miles west of Kathmandu, Aug. 23, 2024.

At least 27 people were killed and 16 others injured when a bus carrying dozens of Indian pilgrims drove off a key highway and crashed on Friday in Nepal, officials said.

The bus veered off Prithvi Highway and rolled toward a fast-flowing river. Its roof was ripped open before stopping on the rocky bank just shy of the Marsyangdi’s rushing, murky water.

Rescue workers recovered 27 bodies from the wreckage and flew the 16 injured to the capital Kathmandu for treatment, according to Armed Police Force spokesperson Shailendra Thapa.

The wreckage was found near Abukhaireni, a town about 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of the capital, Kathmandu and the river. It would be removed only on Saturday as it was already dark and recovery was difficult, Thapa said.

There were 43 people on board the bus and all of them were Indian nationals, confirmed the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. The embassy also said the bus fell about 150 meters (500 feet) from the highway, and they were coordinating with local authorities undertaking relief and rescue operations.

The bus from the neighboring Indian town of Gorakhpur was heading toward Kathmandu from the resort town of Pokhara on Friday when it drove off the highway midway through the journey.

Tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims from neighboring India visit Nepal every year to visit Hindu shrines. Nepal is a Hindu-majority country. Local news reports said the pilgrims on the bus were also heading toward Kathmandu to visit the Pashupatinath, the revered temple of Hindu god Shiva.

Nepal army personnel cary out a search operation looking for the survivors after two buses were swept by a landslide off the highway and into a swollen river near Simaltal, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu, Nepal, July 13, 2024.

In July, two buses were swept by landslides not too far from Friday’s accident site. Of the 65 people on board those two buses, only three survived and only about half the bodies were recovered. The wreckage of those buses has not been found yet but authorities have continued to search.

The Monsoon season that begins in June and stretches up to September brings heavy rainfall to Nepal triggering landslides and flooding. The heavy rainfall also swells the rivers and adds speed to the generally fast-flowing rivers due to the mountainous terrain. The season also turns rivers murky brown, making any search mission difficult.

Rescuers used divers, scanners and even heavy magnets to try to locate the wreckage but no traces were found.

Bus accidents in Nepal are mostly due to poorly maintained roads and vehicles and much of the country is covered by mountains with narrow roads.

Security is stepped up at a NATO air base in Germany due to a potential threat

Soldiers check the entrance to the NATO air base, in Geilenkirchen, Germany, Friday, Aug. 23, 2024.

BERLIN (AP) Security at a NATO air base in western Germany has been raised because of intelligence information pointing to a potential threat, and all staff not essential to missions have been sent home as a precaution, NATO said.

The Geilenkirchen air base, near the border with the Netherlands, is where the alliances Airborne Warning and Control System, or AWACS, aircraft are based.

A post on the NATO AWACS fleets account on social media network X late Thursday night announcing that we raised the security level did not elaborate on the nature of the potential threat. It said that operations continue as planned.

The Geilenkirchen base said Friday that it had nothing to add to the statement and the situation at the moment is unchanged.

German news agency dpa said a reporter saw police cars on the grounds of the air base. Police confirmed a deployment Thursday night but gave no details, and offered no information on Friday morning.

Last week, a major German air force based near Cologne was locked down for several hours amid fears that its water supply might have been tampered with. An investigation found no evidence of such sabotage. There were also reports of suspicious observations at Geilenkirchen and a person was briefly detained for questioning near the base, dpa reported at the time, but there turned out to be nothing untoward.

The incidents come at a time of jitters about the possible vulnerability of infrastructure to attempted Russian sabotage.

On Thursday, prosecutors in Flensburg, in Germanys far north, said they were investigating suspicions of espionage for the purpose of sabotage, without elaborating on who might be behind it. German media reported that drones had been spotted over a chemical park in Brunsbuettel, on the North Sea coast.

Rwanda announces ban on over 40 religious groups

Move comes weeks after authorities closed over 5,000 churches accused of failing to comply with required legal standards

Rwandan authorities announced a ban Thursday on the activities of 43 faith groups across the country effective Aug. 28, weeks after thousands of illegal churches were closed.

A letter issued by the Ministry of Local Government directed districts leaders to enforce the ban, saying an ongoing evaluation found the affected faith-based organizations operating in contravention of existing regulations.

Most of the affected groups were of Pentecostal denominations, including the Lutheran Church, a member of the Lutheran World Federation established in the 1990s in Rwanda to continue the work of German missionaries.

The move came weeks after authorities, in a major crackdown, closed over 5,000 churches accused of failing to comply with required legal standards and exposing the lives of worshipers to unnecessary risks.

Authorities said 59.3% of over 13,000 churches inspected at the end of July were shut down due to non-compliance.

It was the second major crackdown on places of worship in the country.

In 2018, Rwandan authorities closed more than 700 churches found to be operating illegally.

All preachers were also required to have theological training before opening a church under the law determining the organization and functioning of faith-based organizations in the country.

The government had given church leaders five years to enforce the necessary legal standards, something that many reportedly failed to do.

A large number of Rwandans, or about 40% of the population, belong to the Roman Catholic Church.

But the number of Pentecostal churches has been growing in recent years in many parts of the African continent, mostly run by charismatic preachers who preach the prosperity gospel — promising their followers miracles to change their fortunes.

However, authorities have become suspicious of the intentions of some religious groups.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame, commenting on the crackdown on churches this month, suggested that some clerics under the cover of God manipulate and fleece their followers.

He also suggested the need to introduce a tax on church collections.

51% of Nigerias farming areas are at risk of flooding Agric Minister

Agricultural Insurance Train-the-Trainer Workshop

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abdullahi Sabi Aliyu has stated that up to 51% of farming areas in Nigeria are liable to flooding in 2024.

He stated this during the Agricultural Insurance Train-the-Trainer Workshop which held in Abuja recently where the Minister stated that integration of the Agricultural Insurance Scheme into the NAGS-AP program was intended to safeguard the investments and interventions made by both the government and the financing partners against risk such as flooding.

Abdullahi noted that the risks had become central concerns for the government, financiers, and beneficiary farmers, who are the most vulnerable to bad harvests.

He added that such adverse conditions could erase investments, and the labor invested in the program, leading to significant food price inflation, as is currently being observed.

The Minister also highlighted an unfortunate incident during the 2023 wet farming season, where ginger farmers in Kaduna suffered significant losses due to an outbreak of the ginger blight disease, resulting in the loss of over 90% of their total harvest for the season.

He stated, It was estimated that Nigerian ginger farmers incurred losses amounting to N12 billion due to the catastrophic blight epidemic that decimated their crops in 2023. That is some food for thought and something that we all have to bear in mind; as we are at all times one or two bad harvest seasons away from losing our food supplies.

Furthermore, guidance from the 2024 Annual Flood Outlook report, recently released by the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation in the first quarter of this year, has alerted us that 148 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in 31 states are high flood-risk areas, while 249 LGAs in 36 States and the FCT fall within moderate flood-risk areas.

In simple terms, 397 LGAs out of the total 774 LGAs in Nigeria, representing over 51% of our farming areas, are at risk of flooding.

What you should know

In a related report, the Jigawa State Emergency Agency has disclosed that recent floods have destroyed over 2,000 hectares of farmland across the state.

Further reports of floods damaging farmlands and residential apartments nationwide could exacerbate the ongoing cost of living crisis and heighten food insecurity. Such events could also hinder efforts to boost food production as the dry season approaches.

Experts have observed that the current high food prices in the country are a lingering effect of the 2022 floods, which severely impacted regions, particularly in the Northwest, Northcentral, Southeast, and Niger Delta areas.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it recently issued a 21-day strike notice because the federal government has consistently failed on its promises to address the lingering issues hindering the development of Nigeria’s universities.

ASUU president, Emmanuel Osodeke, was at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Abia where he disclosed the outcome of ASUU’s national executive council (NEC) meeting.

The meeting was held between August 17 and August 18 at the University of Ibadan.

The union is to reconvene at the expiration of the 21-day notice to decide on the imminent strike.

Osodeke said the federal and state governments have seemingly refused to address all the issues that prompted ASUU’s previous strikes.

He said the NEC has received “alarming reports” on the failed promises the government made during the 2022 strike.

He rejected the “slow pace of the intervention” by the minister of education in resolving those issues.

Osodeke cited the review and signing of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, the demand for impactful funding, and the need for an emergency revitalisation fund for public universities.

He cited the payment of outstanding earned academic allowances, release of withheld salaries, promotion arrears, and third-party deductions targeted at its members.

Osodeke said ASUU is also aggrieved about illegal recruitments, the proliferation of public universities, and the abuse of university laws.

Also demanded is the removal of the universities from the Treasury Single Account and the IPPIS to aid university autonomy.

The ASUU president said the union has declared September 10 to solidarise with its members “unjustly persecuted” across universities in Nigeria.

Nigerian woman delivers mid-flight en route Brazil

Nigerian woman named Oyindamola Akinyera recently had an extraordinary experience, giving birth to a baby girl while on a flight to Brazil.

Akinyera took to Instagram to announce the surprising event, explaining that she and her partner were on a trip to Brazil for their “Honeymoon and Babymoon” when she unexpectedly went into labor mid-flight.

Despite the unexpected circumstances, the couple safely welcomed their baby girl aboard the plane.

In a lengthy post via her Instagram page, she described how the flight attendants took on the role of “personal midwives” and a doctor on board, identified as Carolina, assisted with the delivery.

Akinyera shared that she delivered her baby girl just 20 minutes before the plane touched down.

Upon landing in Brazil, she immediately went to the hospital, where she confirmed that both she and her newborn daughter were doing well.

The post partly read, “The pains kept waking me up and the Qatar airways hostess (my personal midwives) sprung into action. They set up a whole birthing station for me at the entrance of the plane.

“Everything was happening so fast and all I was thinking is that I have to hold on till we land to have this baby.

“They asked if there was any doctor on board and a doctor called Carolina walked up to us and is like “I deliver babies”. She checks me, tells me I’m fully dilated and the baby is ready to come. At this point, we’re in Brazilian airspace and about 40 mins from landing.

“… Midway, I got tired and tell them I can’t do it anymore and my God sent Qatar airways crew aka midwives prayed over me to keep going.

“20 mins before landing, God blessed us with the most precious baby girl. We landed in Brazil safely and headed straight to the hospital where our beautiful baby girl and I are doing great.”

The heartwarming story has garnered significant attention online, with many people offering their congratulations and well-wishes to Oyindamola for her memorable and joyous experience.

Togo, Benin owe Nigeria $14m in electricity bills –Federal Gov’t

Power grid

The Federal Government has disclosed that Togo and Benin Republic owed Nigeria a cumulative $14.19 million for electricity supplied in the first quarter of 2024.

This was revealed in a report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which highlighted the non-payment of electricity bills by the four international bilateral customers being supplied by power generating companies (GenCos) in Nigeria’s electricity supply industry.

The report named the foreign companies involved as Para-SBEE in Benin Republic, which owes $3.15 million, Transcorp-SBEE in Benin ($4.46 million), Mainstream-NIGELEC in Togo ($1.21 million), and Odukpani-CEET in Togo ($5.36 million).

According to NERC, none of the companies made any payment against the cumulative invoices issued by the Market Operator for services rendered during the quarter in question.

In addition to the foreign debt, NERC noted that no remittances were made by local bilateral customers within Nigeria against the cumulative invoice of $1.88 million issued for services rendered in Q1 2024. However, the report did state that some payments were made during the same quarter by both local and international customers towards outstanding Market Operator’s invoices from previous quarters.

“Cumulatively, a total of $5.96 million was paid by two international customers. Similarly, the Market Operator received N505.71 million from eight local bilateral customers as payment towards debts that were incurred pre-2024/Q1,” the report indicated.

NERC expressed concern over the situation, urging the Market Operator to enforce the market rules to address what it described as “payment indiscipline” among local and international bilateral customers.

The development followed earlier reports from May, 2024 that international consumers had failed to remit about $51.26 million to Nigeria for electricity exported in 2023. The Federal Government’s data revealed that the bilateral power consumers also did not remit about N7.61 billion to the Nigerian power sector last year.

NERC condemned the development, stressing that the Market Operator, an arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) responsible for managing Nigeria’s power exports, must take decisive action to curtail the persistent payment defaults.

An analysis of the government’s industry data showed that international consumers failed to remit $16.11 million, $11.97 million, $11.16 million, and $12.02 million for the electricity exported to them in the first, second, third, and fourth quarters of 2023, respectively.

‘I’m still younger’: Bill Clinton, 78, mocks Trump’s age during DNC speech

Former President Bill Clinton had a memorable moment at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, Aug. 21, while speaking about Vice President Kamala Harris, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s vision for the future and Donald Trump’s age.

Clinton, who turned 78 on Aug. 19, joked about his age during his remarks before adding: “The only personal vanity that I want to assert is that I’m still younger than Donald Trump,”

Trump, also 78, was born in June.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Clinton also alluded to Trump’s seeming obsession with crowd size, adding to a joke made by Barack Obama on Tuesday night.

“So, we’ve got to ask ourselves the question: Do you want to build a strong economy from the bottom, up, and the middle, out or do you want to spend the next four years talking about crowd size?” Clinton asked.

The 2024 election, Clinton said, was a choice between Harris who he said “will ease our fears” and “the other guy, who’s proved, even more than the first go-around, that he’s about me, myself and I.”

Clinton also urged the audience to listen to Trump’s words when he speaks, saying, “The next time you hear him, don’t count the lies. Count the I’s his vendettas, his vengeance, his complaints, his conspiracies … he’s like a tenor trying to get his lungs open by singing, ‘me, me, me, me, me.’ “

“When Kamala Harris is president, every day will begin with you, you, you, you, you,” he added.

French destroyer rescues 29 mariners from oil tanker stricken in Red Sea attacks

A French destroyer rescued 29 mariners from an oil tanker that came under repeated attack in the Red Sea, officials said Thursday, while also destroying a bomb-carrying drone boat in the area.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels are suspected to have carried out the assault on the Sounion, now abandoned in the waterway.

The attack, the most serious in the Red Sea in weeks, comes during a monthslong campaign by Houthis targeting ships over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip that has disrupted a trade route through which $1 trillion in cargo typically passes each year.

The Sounion is now at anchor in the Red Sea and no longer drifting, the European Union’s Operation Aspides said.

The vessel had been staffed by a crew of 25 Filipinos and Russians, as well as four private security personnel, who have been taken to nearby Djibouti, the EU mission in the Red Sea said.

The Sounion has 150,000 tons of crude oil aboard and represents a “navigational and environmental hazard,” the mission warned.

“It is essential that everyone in the area exercises caution and refrains from any actions that could lead to a deterioration of the current situation.”

Military officials did not name the French destroyer involved in the rescue. The Sounion also had not asked for an escort prior to the attacks, the EU mission said.

The French military separately released an image of the Sounion, showing the blaze on board had been extinguished.

It also published an image of its fire targeting the drone boat as well.

In the attack Wednesday, men on small boats first opened fire with small arms about 140 kilometers (90 miles) west of the rebel-held Yemeni port city of Hodeida, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said.

Four projectiles also hit the ship, it added.

It wasn’t immediately clear if that meant drones or missiles.

The Houthis did not immediately claim responsibility for the attacks, though it can take them hours or even days before they acknowledge their assaults.

However, they did acknowledge U.S. airstrikes in Hodeida that the American military’s Central Command said destroyed a Houthi surface-to-air missile and radar system Wednesday.

The Houthis have targeted more than 80 vessels with missiles and drones since the war in Gaza started in October. They seized one vessel and sank two in the campaign that also killed four sailors.

Other missiles and drones have either been intercepted by a U.S.-led coalition in the Red Sea or failed to reach their targets.

The rebels maintain that they target ships linked to Israel, the United States or the UK to force an end to Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. However, many of the ships attacked have little or no connection to the conflict, including some bound for Iran.

As Iran threatens to retaliate against Israel over the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, the U.S. military told the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to sail more quickly to the area.

Early Thursday, the U.S. military’s Central Command said the Lincoln had reached the Mideast’s waters, without elaborating.

America also has ordered the USS Georgia-guided missile submarine into the Mideast, while the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier strike group was in the Gulf of Oman.

Additional F-22 fighter jets have flown into the region and the USS Wasp, a large amphibious assault ship carrying F-35 fighter jets, is in the Mediterranean Sea.

At least, 6 killed, 11 injured in South Korea hotel fire

At least six people were killed and 11 others injured as a fire broke out at a South Korean hotel, local media said on Aug 22, citing the fire authorities and the police.

The fire broke out at a nine-storey hotel in Bucheon, some 20km south-west of the capital Seoul, at about 7.39pm local time.

Six guests were killed, and three were seriously wounded. Eight others suffered minor injuries. The number of casualties may increase as rescue operations were underway.

The fire, which started from a room on the eighth floor, did not spread throughout the hotel, but the entire building was filled with black smoke, causing casualties.

Up to 46 fire vehicles and about 150 firefighters were sent to the scene for rescue operations.

Indonesia cancels ratification of controversial election law changes as thousands protest

Protesters attempt to storm Indonesia's parliament during a protest against controversial changes to election laws that could further enhance the political influence of outgoing President Joko Widodo, in Jakarta, Indonesia

Indonesian lawmakers canceled plans to ratify controversial revisions to the country’s election laws, the deputy speaker of Parliament said, after thousands of protesters rallied in front of the parliament building.

If implemented, the changes could have further enhanced the political influence of outgoing President Joko Widodo.

Parliament met in an emergency session yesterday to overturn one decision made by Indonesia’s Constitutional Court on election procedures, while amending another.

But the legislature canceled the ratification after failing to achieve a quorum amid the protests outside.

“It was stated that the revision of the regional election law cannot be implemented. This means that today the revision of the regional election law will not be implemented,” Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad told reporters in Jakarta.

Indonesian police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse thousands of protesters who attempted to storm the parliament building after they tore down a section of fence and threw rocks at police.

Protesters occupied roads in front of the building.

Some held banners and signs, while others started a fire and burned tires.

The Constitutional Court on Tuesday dismissed a challenge to an age limit that prevents people under 30 from running for regional governorships, which would prevent Widodo’s youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, 29, from running in a regional contest in Central Java.

The court also made it easier for political parties to nominate candidates by cutting back a requirement that they hold 20% of a local legislature.

Parliament on Wednesday passed an emergency motion to change the minimum age to serve as governor to 30 at the time of inauguration and further ease nomination requirements, and had planned to ratify the change in a plenary session yesterday.

The moves triggered widespread condemnation on social media and raised concerns about a potential constitutional crisis.

The legislature was forced to cancel passing the law after failing to achieve a quorum.

Widodo, popularly known by his nickname Jokowi, began his second and final five-year term in October 2019 and is not eligible to run again.

He leaves office in October.

Widodo’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, is the incoming vice president after the same court created an exception to the age limit for the post for former regional leaders.

The decision was made while Widodo’s brother-in-law, Anwar Usman, was serving as chief justice.

Usman was criticized for participating in a case involving a close relative and later dismissed.

Activists, students, workers and Indonesian celebrities and musicians joined the protest yesterday, voicing concerns about democracy in Indonesia.

Protests were also reported in other big cities, including Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Makassar.

In Yogyakarta, at least 1,000 protesters rallied in front of Yogyakarta’s parliament building, the state palace and the city’s ceremonial center.

Their demands included voting down the regional election bill, respecting the Constitutional Court’s ruling and rejecting political dynasties

Nigerian Army denies invading churches

The Nigerian Army has refuted a report making the rounds that its personnel invaded churches and dispersed the congregation in their places of worship at Umunze in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra.

It had been reported that the alleged invasion of some Catholic Churches in the town created panic among the people.

Reacting, however, the Director of Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Thursday, said the troops conducted cordon and search operations and did not invade churches as reported.

Nwachukwu said the operation was conducted by troops of 82 Division Nigerian Army based on the information that the assailants who attacked and killed troops were seen in a house close to the church being given medical treatment.

According to him, it was, therefore, not an invasion as wrongly portrayed.

“During the operation, the troops evacuated the people who were considered vulnerable if a shootout ensued to avoid collateral damage.

“Basically the cordon and search on the community was to enable the troops effect arrest of some accomplices who escaped with gunshot wounds and blood stains from the attack that killed two of our troops.

“Available information indicated that they were receiving treatment within the locality and the cordon was lifted after the search, but unfortunately the suspects had already left the building to which they were traced.

“It is most unfortunate that the operation took place on a Sunday,” he said.

Nwachukwu said that troops’ deployment in the area was expedient because of increased cases of kidnapping and ransom collection by criminals in Umunze.

According to him, the troops’ deployment in the area has helped to reduce these crimes. “The troops will continue to ensure the safety of all the citizens,” he added.”

Court stops APC congresses …bars party’s NWC from removing Beke’s leadership

The Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has granted an ex-parte order restraining the All Progressives Congress (APC) from holding its scheduled congresses in Rivers State.

The court ordered that the national leadership of the APC led by its Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, and its Secretary, Surajudeen Ajibola-Basiru should not go ahead to conduct the ward, local government, and state congresses scheduled for 11th, 16th, and 26th October 2024.

Other defendants in the suits filed by Peter Ohochukwu, Haija Ndidi-Chukwuma for themselves and all elected executive members of APC in the state were the APC, Inspector-General of Police, Nigerian Police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Justice Godwin Ollor in his ruling on the ex-parte motion also restrained the defendants either for themselves, their men, officers, or agents from conducting, supervising, holding, monitoring, or in any other manner conducting elections to make up Rivers State executive committee.

Justice Ollor insisted that his ruling was based on the merit of the application and oral application by the plaintiffs’ Lawyer, Collins Dike.

The judge also restrained the national leadership of the party against any plan to suspend the Emeka Beke-led executives of the party in the state.

The court further restrained the National Chairman of APC, the Secretary, and the APC from doing anything to interfere in the activities of the elected executive of APC in the state led by Chief Beke pending the hearing and determination of motion on notice for interlocutory injection.

Justice Ollor adjourned till September 9, 2024, for a hearing of motion on notice.
