Rep. Obi Aguocha (LP-Abia) has commended the efforts the Department of State Services  (DSS), were putting in place to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu’s healthcare needs were met.

Obi also commended the DSS for the approval of Kanu’s request for access and attention to private medical care and to a doctor of his choice.

Aguocha, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said that he was granted access to visit Kanu,  the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Oct. 24.

He said that he was recently approached by Kanu’s legal team which complained of its inability to interface with the detained IPOB leader.

He said that the visit was part of the ongoing effort at finding a political solution to the continued detention of Kanu.

Aguocha confirmed that Kanu had received private medical attention as recently as Oct. 3.

The lawmaker also commended Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, for resolving the access restriction.

“I took urgent steps in writing the DSS and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, seeking their immediate intervention.

“A meeting was called, and it was positive, and the DSS informed me that the restriction to accessing Kanu was occasioned by his lawyers asking the judge to recuse herself,” he said.

He however, said that he was allowed to have an audience with Kanu in the company of an immediate family member.

Aguocha said that  he remained optimistic that a political solution will be achieved, leading to the release of Kanu and also for the peace and stability of the South-East.

 Foremost youth leaders from the Southeast have hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu as a Minister in his cabinet.

They said that Tinubu has appointed the Igbos to strategic positions in his administration, adding that his gesture was reflective of his posture as a democrat and detribalised leader.

Mr. Uche Idechukuka and Emeka Obileom, of the Southern Youths Development Forum (SYDF) inc and Good Governance Group(GGG) in a joint statement at the weekend said that the current administration has given the Igbos a sense of belonging.

The statement reads in parts: “By this appointment, President Bola Tinubu has again demonstrated that he truly loves and appreciate Ndigbo.

“Ambassador Bianca is a true daughter of Igbo and as a  wife of the late Igbo icon, every Igbo strongly believes that the late Ikemba of Nnewi was a leader of not only the Igbos but a Pan-Nigerian and one of Africa’s best.

“We have continuously praised Mr President for several appointments of Igbos in strategic positions in his  government and we are working with many Igbo groups around the world to reciprocate the actions of Mr President.

“We are mobilizing major Southeast blocs to support Mr President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We are also working round the clock to build a national peace movement which will be launched in December across the country.

“We are ready to work with the administration, especially for the overall interest of all our people”.

 Mr Ukadike Chinedu, the Publicity Secretary, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), says that the scarcity of fuel being presently experienced will soon be over.

Chinedu told the News Agency of Nigeria that the shifting of the supply chain was the cause of the scarcity in the country, adding that in a few weeks, the product would be available.

“The supply chain is dependent on the importation of petroleum products but now the Federal Government has decided that they will not import but patronise Dangote and advised marketers to buy from him.

“So now, Dangote is reliably supplying the products and other products of crude oil,” he said.

Chinedu said that other reasons for the scarcity include documentation and logistics problems, among others in the interchange.

He said that Dangote had supplied 300 trucks and subsequently had been giving NNPCL the product.

Chinedu said that the use of vessels to supply in the coastal area would avert heavy usage of trucks on the roads.

“This will reduce road accidents, vehicles travelling long distances would be reduced, and it would help reduce prices.

“So we are trying to conclude the arrangement of sending through vessels to coastal areas to be able to decongest the road usage by trucks.

“All these things cause a little drift in the supply chain, in a little time, all these things will be fixed,” he said.

Chinedu said that the NNPCL had resumed supply, and major marketers were buying, adding that the independent marketers were trying to conclude their arrangement with Dangote so they could start buying.

He said that It was important for Dangote to sell to independent marketers, to reduce the issue of middlemen in terms of the distribution chain.

Chinedu said that IPMAN would no longer be relying on other competitors, for its products.

Also, he said that IPMAN had unveiled their website Ipman.ng.com.

Chinedu said that the website would enable marketers to pay through the portal and get their petroleum products, which would help to organise IPMAN to be on the front burner in the tax distribution team.

Also, he said that the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) had promised to pay marketers N10 billion as part of the outstanding claims with the Petroleum Equalisation Fund (PEF).

Chinedu said that marketers were hopeful that soon the money would get to various marketers.

“We have confidence in the authority of NMDPRA and also agreed and promised to give IPMAN bulk purchase agreement with Dangote.”

He said that once discussions had been concluded, the product would be available across the country.

 The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has clarified its previous statement, retracting the claim that five bodies had been recovered from the Atlantic Ocean following the crash of a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, registration number 5N-BQG, operated by Eastwind Aviation, last Thursday.

The Director General of the NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh, initially announced on Channels TV that the number of bodies retrieved from the crash site had risen to five. However, on Sunday, the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, issued a statement correcting this, confirming that only three bodies have been recovered so far.

Oladeji stated, “Contrary to reports suggesting that five bodies have been recovered, we confirm that only three bodies were retrieved on the day of the incident. Efforts to locate the remaining individuals continued on October 25, 2024, and although divers located two additional bodies, strong ocean currents, and limited visibility prevented their retrieval at that time.

“The recovery of the remaining persons on board remains a top priority for the coordinated search, rescue, and recovery team.”

The NSIB also announced plans to deploy a Remotely Operated Vehicle equipped with advanced sensors and cameras to the site to improve visibility and precision in the deep-water environment.

“This ROV will facilitate detailed inspection, enable targeted retrieval operations, and assist in gathering vital evidence that will support our investigation into the incident,” Oladeji added.

Quoting NSIB Director General, Capt. Alex Badeh, Oladeji emphasised the Bureau’s dedication to the recovery and investigation efforts.

He said, “The NSIB, along with our partners, is fully committed to locating and recovering all individuals and critical components from this unfortunate accident. Our team is working tirelessly under challenging conditions to conduct a thorough investigation that will provide clear answers for families, loved ones, and the nation.”

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited also reiterated that only three bodies have been recovered. In a statement signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, the NNPCL confirmed, “Beyond the three bodies found in the ill-fated helicopter operated by Eastwind Aviation that crashed on Thursday in Port Harcourt, no other bodies have been recovered.

“The Company further notes that intensified search and rescue operations with the relevant authorities remain ongoing. Once again, our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this tragic incident.”

The Ebonyi State government at the weekend said it has arrested 26 illegal internally Generated Revenue,( IGR), collectors and fake agents.

The state commissioner for transport and special projects, Prince Igboke Emeka Collins disclosed in Abakaliki on Sunday.

Igboke said: “All credit goes to our leader and the People’s governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, who has really given us the platform to contribute to the development and progress of our state.

“We are just following in his footsteps and doing our best to ensure that the state internally Generated Revenue,( IGR), is in top-notch performance, especially in our ministry.

“As at the time I assumed office as the commissioner for transport, we met a lot of irregularities in the transport system, there were lots of fake agencies, fake people collecting revenue in the name of the state government, but through the help of the governor, we fished out almost twenty six of them. And we restored sanity in the transport system of the state.

“As of today, I can assure you that those who are collecting any revenue of the state are genuine people and they do remit as at when they do. Those that had a contract with the Ebonyi State internal revenue service,( EBSIRS), were able to harmonize the system and make it work.

“I wish to announce to you that EBSIRS is very proud of the ministry of transport for what we have done in helping them to achieve that” he stated.

In a related development, Igboke spoke on the alleged controversy that led to the delay in the assumption of office of the new General Manager of Ebonyi State Transport Corporation, EBOTRANS, Mrs Nnenna Jennifer Igwe.

He said that there was no plan by his Ministry to delay or sabotage the official handover to the new general manager.

It was learnt that the new general manager of (EBOTRANS), Igwe, assumed duty after reconciling with the former GM penultimate Wednesday.

 The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) on Saturday faulted the unauthorised use of official uniforms and accoutrements by an online personality Martins Otse, popularly known as “VDM,” in a video posted on his social media platforms.

The Force disassociates itself from the unauthorised portrayal and launched investigation to determine the source of the Police gear used, as well as the authority under which he acted.

A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi: “It is important to remind the public that the unauthorized use of Police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements constitutes a criminal offense, as stipulated in Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, and is subject to strict penalties.

“While the Nigeria Police Force recognizes and supports the creativity of young Nigerians in the content creation space, we strongly caution against the misuse of Police uniforms or symbols. Unauthorized use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has forecast haziness and sunshine nationwide from Sunday to Tuesday.

NiMet’s weather outlook, released on Saturday, predicts moderate dust haze in the northern region on Sunday, with horizontal visibility ranging from 2km to 5km.

The agency anticipates localised visibility of 1,000m or less during the forecast period.

“In the North Central region, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected in the morning hours.

“Later in the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rain are anticipated over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa States.

“In the southern region, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected over parts of Ondo, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States in the morning hours,” the outlook stated.

The agency envisages thunderstorms with moderate rain over most areas later in the day. According to NiMet, moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility ranging from 2km to 5km and localised visibility of 1,000m or less is anticipated in the northern region on Monday.

The agency forecasts sunny skies with patches of clouds in the morning hours in the North Central region.

It stated, “Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Benue, and Kogi States.

“Morning thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected over parts of Imo, Ebonyi, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Lagos States.

“Later in the day, thunderstorms are anticipated over most places.”

NiMet foresees moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility ranging from 2km to 5km on Tuesday, with localised visibility of 1,000m or less in the northern region during the forecast period. According to the report, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected throughout the forecast period in the central region.

The agency predicts morning thunderstorms with moderate rain over some parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, with thunderstorms and moderate rain expected in most areas later in the day.

“Dust particles are in suspension, and the public should take necessary precautions.

People with asthma and other respiratory conditions should be cautious under the present weather conditions.

“Strong winds may precede rain in areas where thunderstorms are likely. The public should take adequate precautions,” the weather outlook stated.

NiMet urged the public to adhere to safety advisories issued by relevant authorities, advising airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning.

The agency advised residents to stay informed through weather updates by visiting its website.

The FCT Police Command has confirmed that five persons have been rescued from the rubble of a collapsed building at Vidaz Estate, within the Sabon Lugbe Extension of Abuja.

Approximately 40 people were reportedly trapped under the rubble of the collapsed storey building in Sabon Lugbe, a suburban community in Abuja.

Reports also stated that the collapse occurred around 5 pm on Saturday, while the victims were still inside the building.

In a statement signed by SP Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Police Command, on Sunday, the police said no casualties had been recorded.

The police added that preliminary investigations revealed that the FCT authorities had previously demolished the building, as it was located in an illegally acquired area.

Adeh, however, explained that scavengers were at the site of the demolished building to retrieve scrap metal, which then led to the compromise of the structure and its resultant secondary collapse.

She, therefore, urged residents to respect the boundaries of demolished structures to avoid any similar occurrences in the future.

The statement reads, “The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the collapse of a building situated in Vidaz Estate, within the Sabon Lugbe extension, FCT. Our preliminary investigations reveal that the building was previously demolished by the FCT authorities due to its location in an illegally acquired area.”

“Regrettably, the structure was further compromised by scavengers who had been tampering with the remnants for scrap metal, ultimately leading to its secondary collapse.

“A total of five individuals were successfully rescued from the debris, and there were no reported fatalities. In light of this incident, we urge the public to respect the boundaries of demolished structures and construction sites, ensuring their safety and preventing similar occurrences in the future.”

Meanwhile, the FCT Director of Development Control, Muktar Galadima, also issued a statement on Sunday, stating that news of the collapsed building was “just propaganda”.

He clarified that the building is within the site currently under demolition as of Thursday, adding that information gathered indicated that the site recorded an influx of over 500 scavengers, which triggered the remains of a demolished slab to fall on them.

 The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, (SSANU), have resolved to embark on an indefinite strike commencing Monday.

The Joint Action Committee, (JAC), of non-teaching staff unions in the universities, which is coordinating the action has directed its members to proceed on the strike nationwide.

The fresh strike is hinged on the non-payment of their four months withheld salaries from when they joined an industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) during the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The strike according to the leaders of the two unions would commence on Sunday night of October 27, 2024.

JAC in a circular to all branch Chairman of NASU and SSANU in the universities and inter-university centres, with the title: “Latest development in respect of the withheld four (4) months salaries,” explained that the strike initially billed for 23rd October was rescheduled because of the Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches on the said date.

The circular which was signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU President, explained that the strategic change in timing was for effective coordination and for both Unions to be on the same page.

JAC regretted that despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for 50 percent of the four months’ withheld salaries to be paid, the alleged inaction of the Minister of Finance raised questions about the government’s commitment to resolving the issue.

According to the circular, “It is on record that the JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation. However, the sincerity of the government to our cause is in doubt.

“In view of this, the leadership of JAC has decided that the effective date for the strike be moved to midnight of Sunday, 27th October 2024, to allow the Branch Officers of NASU to be on ground before commencing the strike.

“We had to do this strategic change in timing for effective coordination and for both Unions to be on the same page.

“We express our deepest appreciation for your steadfast commitment to the leadership and we affirm our determination to persist in this struggle until ultimate victory is secured.

Youth groups under the Coalition of Niger Delta Youths Against Poverty, Insecurity & Environmental Degradation (CONDYAPIED) have voiced frustration with the Group Chief Executive Officer, (GCEO), of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, for not delivering on his commitment to operationalize the Port Harcourt Refinery by the end of September 2024.

Kyari had repeatedly assured Nigerians that the Port Harcourt refinery would resume local refining to reduce petroleum prices significantly by the September deadline.

Yet, a month later, the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries remain non-operational, leaving only the Dangote Refinery in production. Consequently, marketers continue to rely on imported refined petroleum, driving up costs for consumers.

In a statement jointly signed on Sunday by CONDYAPIED Coordinator Engr. Jonas Igariga and General Secretary Comrade Jack Opobo, the coalition demanded Kyari’s resignation and a public apology to Nigerians.

“In a society where leaders have a conscience, figures like Mele Kyari would bow their heads in shame, resign, and apologize for plunging the nation into hardship,” the coalition declared.

“The NNPCL GCEO has repeatedly failed Nigerians concerning the Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri refineries, despite over $3 billion poured into the project. It appears that Kyari and his associates lack any intent to repair the refineries, preferring to import substandard products and profit at the citizens’ expense,” the statement read.

CONDYAPIED alleged that importers and NNPCL insiders are thwarting President Tinubu’s reforms, manipulating fuel supply to cause price hikes and prolonged queues.

The coalition warned of impending protests in Abuja, vowing to occupy the NNPC towers until their demands are met.

The coalition also raised concerns over reports suggesting plans to convert the Port Harcourt refinery into a blending facility.

“We fear this conversion will expose Niger Delta communities to harmful pollutants and chemicals, worsening environmental degradation,” they stated, emphasizing their resolve to oppose any move to transform the refinery into a blending plant.

CONDYAPIED announced that it would not relent in its fight to protect the environmental and economic well-being of Niger Delta residents, urging swift action to restore the refinery’s intended purpose.

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, Saturday, at the Enugu State Old Government House, during the Service of Songs and tribute, made an emotional tribute to the late President of Ohanaez Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who he said, was as  father figure to the entire Imolites.

According to a Press Statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Dr. Charles Uzopuo, Governor Uzodimma, who was represented by his Deputy, Lady (Dr.) Chinyere Ekomaru, enthused that late Chief Iwuanyanwu was a man the entire people of Imo state saw as a father because of the immense love and care he extended to all Imolites, Ndigbo  and all Nigerians without any discrimination.

“His  passion for the development of Imo State and the entire Alaigbo was second to none. His calls and efforts for a better Nigeria was sincere and without ethnic colouration.

“He achieved a lot in his life endeavours and flourished in multiple careers as an Engineer, Business man, Industrialist, Publisher, Politician and leader of repute.

“He built industries, owned chains of businesses (even in aviation industry), employed people and was at a time, the biggest employer of labour in Igbo land. He was a philanthropist, who touched the lives of many. We will dearly miss him as the shoe he left behind is too big for any of us to quickly put his legs.

“Ahaejiagamba was also a great sports enthusiast, formed and single-handedly sponsored the Imo darling football club, the Iwuanyanwu Nationale, now Heartland Football Club of Owerri”.

Also speaking, was the Governor of Enugu state, Mr. Peter Mbah, who saw Chief Iwuanyanwu as a great Iroko tree, whose fall has caused a rumble in his community, with ripple effects across Igbo land and beyond.

The widow of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigerian’s First Republic President,  Prof. Uche Azikiwe and the former Minister of Women Affairs, who is also the President-General of Iyom Ndigbo, Iyom Josephine Aninih, in their separate tributes described late Chief Iwuanyanwu as a rare gem who relentlessly fought for Igbos and craved peace and development of Igbo land and Nigeria at large. They encouraged Igbos, especially, the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo, to continue to seek for that lasting peace for Ndigbo, in keeping the legacy of the respected Igbo great and fallen hero, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

In his tribute also, the Secretary-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo worldwide, Amb. Okey Emuche, regretted the loss of Chief Iwuanyanwu at such a critical time when his leadership, erudition, experience, tenacity and services were most needed, noting that Ahaejiagamba Ndigbo was passionate about peace and unity among the Igbos, promising that they will carry on from where he stopped, while upholding his legacies.

A former president of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, the Chairman, Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Igwe Samuel Asadu (Agadagidi), Umuada Igbo, in Nigeria and Diaspora from the seven (7) Igbo speaking states of Abia, Anambra, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo and Rivers, all took turns to pay their tributes to the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

The Emeritus Anglican Archbishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel. O. Chukwuma, who conducted the Service of songs and Day of tributes, in his sermon, called for harmonization of leadership in Ohaneze Ndigbo, which he said, “will ensure unity, peace and development of the Igbo states”.

He also demanded for a quality leadership from the Governors of the Igbo states, while emphasizing that everyone, be it a leader or the led, will be remembered for his deeds while alive.

Prince Jide Iwuanyanwu, the first son of late Iwuanyanwu, in his vote of thanks, acknowledged that his father was large in  body and life, as evidenced by the emotional and overwhelming eulogies by people who knew him.

He appreciated everyone who came to give his father the deserving respect and generously thanked all, who ensured the success of the event, especially the Governor of Imo state, His Excellency Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodimma, his Enugu state counterpart, His Excellency Mr. Peter Mbah and the entire leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo, presently anchored by Amb. Okey Emuche.

Former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has reaffirmed her commitment to serving Nigeria and doing her best to contribute to its progress and prosperity.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that Mrs Ohanenye was among five ministers fired by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday.

She was replaced by the former minister of state police affairs, Imaan Suleiman.

In a letter of appreciation addressed to Mr Tinubu, the former minister thanked the president for the privilege to serve as Minister, describing it as an honour and privilege to have contributed to the nation’s development.

She also thanked the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, for support during stewardship at the women’s affairs ministry.

She said: “I write to express my sincere gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the extraordinary opportunity to serve as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It has been an honour and a privilege to contribute to the development of our nation.”

Former House of Representatives member, Barrister Wumi Ogunlola, has defended President Bola Tinubu, stating that he cannot be blamed for the current economic hardships in Nigeria.

Speaking in Ado-Ekiti, Ogunlola stated that the country was already facing severe economic difficulties before Tinubu assumed office, likening Nigeria’s state to being in an “intensive care unit.”

Ogunlola attributed the socio-economic problems to mistakes made by past administrations and asserted that President Tinubu was working to rectify those issues through strategic reforms.

She expressed confidence in Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, urging Nigerians to give his administration more time to address the challenges, stating that the President was focused on long-term solutions.

She acknowledged that it would be impossible to fix all of the country’s issues overnight but assured that the country’s economic situation would improve in time under Tinubu’s leadership.

Her words: “It’s a pity that we find ourselves where we are, we don’t always think about the foundations of a thing, we only talk about the way we are building on it.

“All these things we are experiencing started from somewhere but we don’t always acquaint our mind to the fact that some people started this thing and we are the one bearing the brunt of it.

“It is because there are some people who have made some mistakes in the time past but I have listened to the President say, by the time he would finish his four years, if he has not done it well, they should vote against him.

“It is because he’s so sure of what he is doing and he knows the aftermath of what will come out of what he is doing.”

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio

The Federal Government has filed a six-count charge against nine defendants over allegations bordering on disseminating false information on the recent rumour about the impeachment of Senate President, Godwil Akpabio.

The charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/555/2024, was filed at a Federal High Court in Abuja on Oct. 21 by the Deputy Director, Public Prosecution of the Federation, A. A. Yusuf.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the defendants were alleged to have published the false information on Oct. 16 that the Department of State Services (DSS) laid siege to the National Assembly, with a view to effecting the impeachment of Akpabio.

The FG sued the Incorporated Trustee of Order Paper (on whose online platform the false information was allegedly published), Oke Epia (Founder/Publisher and Executive Director of Order Paper), and Tony Okeke Ofodile (Head of Operations) as 1st to 3rd defendants.

Also joined as 4th and 5th defendants were Edna Bill Ulaeto (Admin/Finance Executive) and Elizabeth Atime (National Assembly lead reporter, author of report).

Others are Regina Udo (Coordinator of Programmes), Leah Twaki (Social Media Executive), Idongesit Joseph Ekoh (Admin Support) and Edoesomi Sharon Omonegho (National Assembly correspondent) as 6th to 9th defendants respectively.

In count one, the prosecution accused the Order Paper (Incorporated Trustee), of Suit C12, Halima Plaza, Plot 1496, Balanga Street, Area 11, Garki, Abuja, through its agents; Oke Epia, Tony Okeke Ofordile, Edna Bill Ulacto, and Elizabeth Atime, and others at large, of publishing a false information via its online platform.

They were said to have on or about Oct. 16 alleged that “the DSS laid siege to the National Assembly over plans to impeach the Senate President, which you knew to be false, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 24(1)(a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act 2015 and punishable under the same section.”

The defendants and others at large, in count two, were alleged to have intentionally published defamatory statements regarding the DSS and Sen. Akpabio, on their online platform.

The case is yet to be assigned to a judge as at the time of filing this report.

The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has confirmed the crash of a Sikorsky SK76 helicopter near Port Harcourt on Thursday, October 24.

The aircraft, operated by East Wind Aviation, went down in the Atlantic Ocean around 11:22 am while flying from the Port Harcourt Military Base to the NUIMANTAN oil rig.

In a statement, the Federal Ministry of Aviation reported that eight people were on board the helicopter at the time of the accident. As of now, three bodies have been recovered, and search and rescue operations were ongoing.

Keyamo has assured that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has been notified, and emergency response teams, including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), are actively involved.

“We are using all available resources to plot the location of the accident and rescue survivors,” the ministry stated, noting the absence of a signal from the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT).

To assist in the search efforts, authorities have deployed military support and low-flying aircraft. Keyamo is personally overseeing the operations to ensure effective coordination among all agencies involved.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those on board, and we are committed to minimizing casualties,” he stated, reiterating the Ministry’s dedication to supporting affected families during this tragic time.

The House of Representatives has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to begin the gradual withdrawal of old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes from circulation ahead of the December 31, 2024 deadline.

During a plenary session on Thursday, lawmakers also urged the CBN to increase the issuance of the new banknotes to ensure a smooth transition.

This resolution followed a motion of urgent national importance moved by Rep Afam Ogene, who expressed concern over the lack of public awareness on the looming deadline.

Ogene noted that with less than two months to go, the CBN has not initiated any meaningful public sensitization on the change, a crucial step to avoid a repeat of the 2023 chaos when the currency switch caused widespread hardship.

Ogene further emphasized that if the CBN does not act promptly, Nigerians may face severe difficulties as the old notes cease to be legal tender on January 1, 2025. He recalled the litigation and public frustration during the 2023 currency transition and stressed that proactive public awareness campaigns, such as jingles, radio, television, and social media postings, should have commenced months ago.

The House also directed the CBN to order commercial banks to stop disbursing old notes and only release the new currency, urging a gradual phase-out of the old notes.

The House Committee on Banking Regulations was instructed to ensure compliance and report back within 21 days.

 The federal government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has disclosed that plans are ongoing to significantly reduce the use of dollars in the Nigerian economy.

According to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, the focus of the current administration is to de-dollarise the Nigerian economy and strengthen the local currency.

Edun made this known on Wednesday while speaking at a Global Investors’ Forum on the sidelines of the World Bank/International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meeting in Washington DC.

He said the move was part of the economic reforms embarked upon by the Tinubu administration.

“There is also a move to de-dollarise the Nigerian economy,” Edun said, adding that local providers of services, regulators, and others are being asked to “invoice in Naira, rather than dollars.”

“It reduces the value for dollar and of course increases the demand for Naira,” he explained.

The Minister also highlighted that the removal of subsidies on petrol and foreign exchange would make more funds available to the government for other projects.

“I think we must not miss the fact that the number one source of foreign exchange revenue to Nigeria is oil production and they are facing the direction that is positive and should yield very good results in the near time,” he added.

According to J.P. Morgan, “De-dollarisation entails a significant reduction in the use of dollars in world trade and financial transactions, decreasing national, institutional and corporate demand for the greenback.”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University Chapter has suspended its six-week strike over a litany of unmet demands including an improved welfare package.

The lecturers suspended their strike which commenced on September 11, 2024, after a meeting held on October 24, 2024.

In a notice on Thursday, the varsity chapter of ASUU said the industrial action was put on hold based on the agreement with the state government.

The notice was co-signed by Suleiman Jauro, the state ASUU Chairperson, and Mustapha Muhammad, the union’s state secretary.

They said the union reviewed an “update on the negotiation between the State Government Negotiation Committee and the branch”

Academic activities are to resume immediately.

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Abia State chapter, has urged the state government to revisit the Memorandum of Agreement concerning the payment of pension arrears and gratuities.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Elder Chukwuemeka Irondi, and Secretary, Elder Uma Kalu, on Thursday, the union emphasized that at no point was any discussion held about waiving their entitlements, including gratuities.

The union pointed out that while Governor Alex Otti cleared pension arrears from June 2023 to March 2024, the 45 months of unpaid pension arrears owed by the previous administration remain unsettled.

Despite commending the governor for the regular payment of monthly pensions, the union criticized the unilateral nature of the MoA, claiming it was influenced by ill-advised recommendations from top aides, including former Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Michael Akpara, and Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi.

The statement read, “The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Abia State Council, insists on a serious review of the so-called Memorandum of Agreement, particularly Article 7(a) and (b), as crafted by agents of the state government.”

The union further clarified that the present administration has not addressed the 45 months of unpaid pension arrears inherited from the previous government.

It added, “The present administration only cleared arrears of 10 months (June 2023 – March 2024), which it incurred, and some pensioners have yet to receive even these payments. The so-called ex gratia payments by the governor are ambiguous, as they were not discussed with the union.”

The NUP also dismissed claims by the governor that the administration had cleared a decade of pension arrears, stating, “The governor’s assertion of having cleared 10 years of arrears is baseless and has no support within the union.”

The union’s statement underscores ongoing dissatisfaction among pensioners over the handling of their dues and calls for a more transparent and inclusive approach in settling the arrears and gratuities.

Governor of Imo State, Sen. Hope Uzodimma on Thursday commissioned the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, (FUTO) Engineering Studio and ICT Hub, jointly constructed by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited and their Joint Venture Partners – TotalEnergies, Agip Oil Company and the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).

In his remarks ahead of the formal inauguration of the facility, Uzodimma lauded the management of Shell, NNPCL, and their partners for their thoughtfulness on the project which he said, aligns perfectly with his administration’s digital transformation agenda.

The project is a furnished 100 – seater ICT facility equipped with computers, smart boards, and two 50 – seater practice workshops to strengthen learning.
