Our monitoring system is on River Benue and River Niger.

The staff are there monitoring the situation, and relating with the people in communities along these river belts, to be careful. The water has been rising, but we are still monitoring the situation. Its better to be prepared than to be taken unawares.

Why we did not put Bobrisky in general cell –NCoS

The Nigerian Correctional Services has disclosed that Idris Ogunleye, also known as Bobrisky, was not kept in the general cell because he has some special features that are feminine in nature.

Micheal Benson, the NCoS official in charge of the Kirikiri Medium Security Facility, said this, yesterday during the investigative hearing conducted by the House of Representatives.

It would be recalled that the House is investigating the alleged N15 million bribe demanded by the EFCC and the money paid to NCoS officials in exchange for Bobrisky to be given special privileges during his six months incarceration.

Bobrisky have some special features like breast. If we put him in the general cell, you would have to bring out his body from the cell. We have some convicted rapist and sodomites, Mr Benson said.

Mr Benson explained that Bobrisky was later moved out of the Medium Security Correctional Facility into the Maximum Security facility for his own safety. The officer, however, said the action was taken in his absence by his superior.

It was reported that Bobrisky did not appear before the panel, but has been ordered by the House to appear in a date yet to be announced by the lawmakers.

Police seal Edo Deputy Governor’s office

The office of the Deputy Governor of Edo State, located on Osadebe Avenue in Benin, has been sealed off by a heavy police presence, raising eyebrows amid ongoing political tensions in the state.

On Sunday, stern-looking policemen were observed at the site, with a machine gun-mounted police truck and three officers stationed at the entrance.

This office was previously relocated from the Government House during a notable standoff between Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

As of Sunday, the entry gate to the office remained closed, and it appears that access has been completely restricted.

Reports indicated that staff members of the deputy governors office were instructed on Friday to report to the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Agency instead.

Additionally, official vehicles from the Deputy Governor’s office, including the Press Crew bus, have been moved to the office of the Head of Service located within the Government House.

A staff of the Deputy Governor’s office on Sunday told our reporter, “You know we are civil servants. On Thursday, we were told to resume in JOOPSA and that was where we also resumed on Friday and we would also do that tomorrow (Monday).

Rivers crisis: I can’t give my kidneys, liver to remain governor, says Fubara

,..Babylonians you see today, you will see no more Fubara

Rivers state governor, Siminialayi Fubara, on Sunday, September 29, lambasted the camp of his predecessor and minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The governor, who reacted to a similar political diatribes thrown to his camp on Saturday by Wike during an event organized by the Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress (RIPCO), said he would not give his kidneys to remain a governor of the state.

He made the statement during the states interdenominational service to mark the 64th Anniversary of the Nigerias independence.

Fubara said: I cannot give my kidney or my liver to anybody, I wont. If that is the only reason for me to be loyal, I will not be. But I will not do the wrong thing. I will stand on the side of right.

I will not mortgage my kidney or my liver, so dont worry about that, because I know that that is what they want and because of that they cant talk. If you have to take my kidney then I will honourably return to my wife so that we manage ourselves, but I wont give my kidney.

Fubara said Wikes camp was frustrated and told the congregation comprising various stakeholders that the Babylonians they see today, they will see no more.

The governor rejected the apology tendered on his behalf to Wike by RIPCO insisting that it was uncalled for and that nobody had the right to apologize for him.

He said his enemy camp was frustrated because they never believed that he would steer the affairs of the state till this point.

The governor maintained that Rivers belonged to everybody and was nobodys personal enterprise, adding that only noisemakers would introduce themselves to announce their presence.

He said: You see anybody that is making noise for recognition is a sign that you have lost it.

He said: When you make noise, let me tell you for those people who have cars, when you get to your house there is a way you hunk your horn, your children will know you are back. If you even dont have a car, there is a way you walk, and the children will also say that is daddys footsteps. But if you have to enter your house and announce, dont you know I am your daddy, then there is a problem.

By the special grace of God, I dont need introduction, I have the name and I am the one standing here. So, please I will beg everyone of you, God has given us this opportunity we must safeguard it.

They are the one looking for a way to destroy it. They dont believe that we will get to this point and I can tell you, I had a reason for inviting candidates for the next local government elections to this service.

As a matter of fact, you know I am a member of PDP, and I know that there will be election that I am conducting, so I have to invite you to come and receive prayers. And little did I know the Bishops gave you the prayers.

The frustration you are seeing before their faces today is this point we have gotten to. So, please be strong, that Babylonians that we are seeing today, we shall see them no more.

Fubara said God had given the evil ones an opportunity to stay for a long time to give them room for repentance but that since they failed to change, God would come heavily on them.

He said: God has a reason for allowing the devil or the evil one to stay long, it is not that he cant take them away, but He gives them time to repent. And when they continue, He will come heavily on them and they will say it would have been better that I leave when I had to, that will be our story in this State.

So, dont be scared of anything, we have gone past the most difficult state. A few of our decisions might not be favourable, but we had to move on as a family because at this time what is important is to protect the soul of this state.

It doesnt not belong to anyone. Rivers State is nobodys enterprise. So, you have to stand strong, this celebration today is for a purpose. It coincided with what happened last year. So, I assure of our support to make all the plans come to reality.

We will get there. We are already there. God does not start and stops halfway, He takes you to the end. And it is because they have seen the end that is why some of them will go and call my name and some will stand and say they are apologizing for me.

Look let me tell you, nobody can apologize for me. As a matter of fact, I belong to that school of thought that says if I am the only person that needs to stand on the side of truth, I will stand there. I dont need anybody to stand with me

There is no security agencies in this State that I have called any day to go and do something wrong. I have never, I dont have any need for it., but I know what they do and they keep failing because God has left them.

Please I want everyone of you to join hands with us. We have a big task ahead of us. We have taken the soul of our state, we must secure it, we must bring this State back to where it used to be.

Fubara said he would not oppress anybody in line with the letters of the countrys new national anthem and that he would not allow anybody to oppress him.

Uzodimma swears in Imo Council Chairmen, deputies; reads riot act to them

Governor Hope Uzodimma has sworn in the 54 newly elected Imo State Local Government Area Chairmen and Vice Chairmen, reading the riot act to them to perform or be recorded wrongly by history.

The Governor swore in the 27 Council Chairmen and the 27 Vice Chairmen yesterday at the New Executive Chambers, Government House Owerri, before top government officials, lawmakers, traditional rulers, religious leaders and captains of industries amid jubilation outside the Chambers by friends and well-wishers from the 305 Electoral Wards in Imo State.

In his speech after administering the oath of office on the Chairmen and their Vice, Governor Uzodimma expressed joy over the conduct of the recent Local Government election in Imo State, saying, “we have put our democratic vehicle in an irreversible gear to take us to our desired progress and development at the grassroots.”

He charged the Chairmen to run an all-inclusive government, serve the people sincerely, shun corruption, be creative about revenue generation, automate governance processes to maximise their revenue, secure and live within their domain, among others.

Governor Uzodimma warned them not to see their office as one only meant to share allocations from the Federation Account, but to rather use such position to showcase their creativity in creating opportunities for wealth to serve the people better.

Reminding them that his administration will have no room for sharp practices and corruption, the Governor further told them that their statutory emolument is enough to carter to their personal needs, hence, those liable for corruption will face the law squarely.

Governor Uzodimma challenged them to use their first 100 days in office to identify the needs of their people, whether in the area of roads, primary health, small businesses, and begin in earnest to deal with them, even as he called on Imo citizens to play the role of referees on the activities of their Council officials as their employers.

The Governor’s speech read:

“As you are aware, we couldn’t conduct the local government election before now because of contrived insecurity in some parts of the state. But to the glory of God, we have done it to the admiration and applause of patriotic indigenes of this state.

“Let me, therefore, congratulate the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) for rising to the occasion to conduct one of the freest and fairest elections in the history of the state. Any assessment of the elections to the contrary can only be a product of incurable political paranoia and jaundice. I am indeed grateful to God that the election was peaceful and didn’t witness any untoward act as the enemies of the state had wished.

“While I congratulate all of you gathered here, I also urge those who were not successful to join hands with you and work for the people while waiting for their turn. I assure those concerned that if they keep hope alive and trust in God, their turn will surely come.

“Now that the winners have emerged, it is morally incumbent upon you to work for the people of the local government whether they voted for you or not or whether they belong to the APC or not. You are now the numero uno in your council. Therefore, run an inclusive government where everyone, irrespective of political or religious affiliation, will be accommodated in the scheme of things.

“Your responsibilities are enormous, and this will require you to think outside the box. What it means is that you have to initiate creative measures that will aid you in attracting more resources for service outside the statutory monthly federal revenue. This will challenge your resourcefulness and ingenuity. But as a responsible father, I assure you that the State will always be there to lend a helping hand when needed.

“However, I must warn that local government Chairmen must not behave like some traditional rulers who abandon their domains to reside in Owerri and other cities, including abroad. The Chairmen and their deputies must stay with the people they serve in their localities. That is one of the ways of integrating yourselves with them, to understand their problems and rejoice with them in their moments of happiness and console them in their moments of pain.

“Because some of you have already worked with me in some capacities in the past, you should know that corruption is anathema to this administration. Whatever it may take you, do well to avoid corruption in all its ramifications. Your statutory emoluments are enough to cater to your personal needs. Let me be clear, anyone who engages in corrupt practices will face the legal consequences of his or her actions, and this will be promptly delivered.

“Your duty is not just to share federal allocation. You must work for the good of all. You have a golden opportunity to build your legacies. The process begins today. Conceive and execute people-oriented projects that would outlive your administration. In that way, you would not only be deepening democracy but etching your name in the minds of the people.

“My dear people of Imo State, with the inauguration of democratic governance at the third tier of government, the 3R administration is poised to serve you better. You are aware that long before the Supreme Court judgment on local government, I had put in place the machinery for the conduct of local government elections. This is another campaign promise fulfilled.

“As we now move into another phase of service, be assured that my administration will continue to cater to your welfare. Our civil servants and pensioners shall continue to receive their dues on time. Recently, our State was voted number one in the literacy rates of women in Nigeria. That was the product of our overall investment in education. We received a similar favourable assessment in the health sector. What it means is that the world is watching what we are doing.

“To our new Chairmen and deputies: I challenge you to set ambitious goals for your first 100 days in office. Identify quick wins that will immediately impact your constituents’ lives. Whether it’s improving local roads, enhancing primary healthcare centers, or boosting small businesses let your actions speak louder than words.

“While I congratulate our brand new Chairmen and deputies for their victories and successful swearing-in, I urge Imo people to watch their performance. They are your employees and should therefore work according to the needs of the people.

“Let your support for this government remain firm. We shall never fail you. The eyes of history are upon us. Let us rise to this occasion and write a story of progress, unity, and prosperity that will echo through the ages.

“May God bless you all, and may God bless Imo State.”

Earlier in his remarks on behalf of his colleagues at the end of the swearing-in, the Chairman of Oru West and Acting Chairman of ALGON, Engr. Ikenna Adikibe, expressed appreciation to the Governor and the people of Imo State for the confidence reposed in them and assured that they will not disappoint their expectations.

He also promised that they will carry out the programmes of the 3R administration without let or hindrance.

The swearing in was witnessed by the Deputy Governor, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe and other members of the House of Assembly, members of the National Assembly such as the Senator representing Owerri Senatorial zone, Dist. Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, Hon. Chike Okafor, Hon. Eugene Dibiagwu, and former House of Representatives member, Rt. Hon Jerry Alagboso.

Others include the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie, Imo State APC Chairman, Dr. MacDonald Ebere and his predecessor, Chief Marcom Nlemigbo, members of Imo State Expanded Executive Council, Chairman Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Eze (Dr.) Emmanuel C. Okeke and other traditional rulers such as HRH Eze Oliver Ohanwe, captains of industries like Chief Tony Chukwu and other Imo stakeholders too numerous to mention.

Controversial Nigerian social media personality, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan appeared before the House of Representatives panel investigating bribery allegations against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) yesterday.

Officials of the EFCC and the NCoS were also present as the Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions commenced an investigation into allegations of bribery and corruption levelled against the anti-graft agency and the prison service by the blogger.

It would be recalled that in a viral video, VeryDarkMan alleged that recently released crossdresser, Bobrisky paid ₦15 million for the anti-graft agency to drop money laundering charges against him during his naira spraying ordeal in April, after which a court sentenced him to six months imprisonment.

The blogger also alleged that Bobrisky paid some millions of naira to secure a choice place in prison. However, the crossdresser denied the allegation and proceeded to sue the blogger. On their part, the EFCC and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) have ordered investigations into the allegations by the blogger.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) had urged the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi (SAN); and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; to conduct an independent investigation into allegations made by a blogger.

The House of Representatives has banned journalists from covering its investigative hearing into the ₦15 million corruption allegations involving crossdresser Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS).

The decision was communicated to the House press corps by the Joint Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Services of the House of Representatives

The lawmakers said its investigation into the corruption claims involving the EFCC and NCS in the Bobrisky case is prohibited.

This decision followed an earlier invitation extended to the press to report on the proceedings.

It would be recalled the House of Representatives last Thursday, adopted a motion to investigate the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the allegation of receiving ₦15 million from crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.

It was reported that a social media influencer, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, alleged that Bobrisky, following his conviction by the court for abusing the naira, allegedly served his jail term in a private residency and not the correctional center.

NIGERIA NEWSNAF Plane Kills 23 Worshippers, others in Kaduna

e Jika da Kolo community in Yadin Kidandan, located in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has suffered a tragic loss, alleging that over 25 people were killed by a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrike intended to combat terrorists.

The incident reportedly occurred over the weekend, sparking significant controversy between the villagers and the military.

Local reports indicated that the victims included 23 worshippers in a mosque and several individuals at a nearby market, who were allegedly killed during the operation.

This claim is in direct conflict with the statements from the NAF, which insists that the operation was executed based on reliable intelligence about a terrorist enclave in the Yadi Forest area, supposedly devoid of any civilian structures such as mosques.

The Air Force maintained that the strike successfully eliminated a number of terrorists, contradicting the communitys reports of civilian casualties.

They firmly denied the presence of a mosque within the targeted zone, underscoring their commitment to preventing collateral damage.

Abdullahi Ismail, a councillor representing the area, acknowledged the incident and highlighted the region as a known danger zone due to frequent terrorist activities.

He said, The strike disfigured the bodies of most of those affected. 23 mutilated bodies were gathered from the scene and had been buried according to Islamic rites. We gathered body parts of 23 people who were identified by relatives, including children and they have been buried.

Of course, Yadin Kidandan is a danger zone because it is under the control of bandits. But there are also innocent villagers who still live around there because they have no other place to go just like the casualties that we witnessed on Friday. So, we discovered that when the strike occurred, most of the people at the mosque died.

A survivor who craved anonymity while speaking with newsmen disclosed, It was a crowded place because there was a local market close to the mosque which was also affected. The incident happened around 2pm.

Yes; it is true that there was a strike by a plane on Friday at a mosque in Jika da Kolo village that claimed many lives, including a few from our village who went to their farms or to do business at the local market close to the mosque. Many people were killed, among them farmers and children who had gathered around the mosque.

We heard when the plane arrived; it dropped something and a moment later, we heard a loud sound because I was in a nearby village.

Thereafter, family members of the victims went to the scene and recognized their relatives for the funeral. With little investigation, those who threw the bomb should have established that the bandits dont live within the villages; they are in the bushes. It is a difficult moment for us, another local identified as Malam has said.

The villagers, therefore, called on the Federal and Kaduna State governments to investigate this incident, saying most of them were still living around the areas because they didnt have any other place to go.

While reacting to the claim of the villagers, the Deputy Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, Group Captain Kabiru Ali, said the airstrikes were only rained on the logistics base of terrorists.

He said there was no mosque in the area, based on pictorial evidence of how the location was before and after the operation as the operation was carried out following credible intelligence indicating a huge presence of terrorists and their weapons cache in the Yadi Forest.

According to him, reports from independent sources, including local informants around the general area, confirmed that the logistics base was totally destroyed and scores of terrorists were killed as a result of the attack.

No IDP camp in Imo, says govt

Imo state government has debunked speculations that the Federal Government has established an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Ehime Mbano local government area of the state.

It explained that what was being built at Nsu was a training facility for skills acquisition programmes for the people of the South East, and not for Nigerians from other parts of the country.

The Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba who disclosed this in Owerri regretted that enemies of Nigeria decided to distort, harmless Information from the National Refugees Commission, so as to pitch Igbos against other parts of the country.

According to Emelumba, the purveyor of the disinformation, Mr Chinonso Uba(alias Nonsokwa) is a notorious propagandist, who had severally dished out seditious materials, from his infamous ” hate speech gospel ministry”, to set the nation on fire.

He said the latest mischief by Uba was intended to incite ndigbo against Northerners, as a means of making the country ungovernable for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Said he.” This is a man who is notorious for churning out hate speeches, founded on stark ignorance of public politics and current affairs, against Northerners. He deliberated twisted the news from the Refugees Commission to incite Ndigbo against other Nigerians.”

The Commissioner wondered why the security agencies have not arrested Uba, who in a widely circulated video called on Ndi Imo to rise against other Nigerians.

He noted that by feeding the people with biased information, Uba was laying the ground for a large-scale insurrection against the Federal Government.

Emelumba said the training Centre at Ehime Mbano was the South East slot, as other geo political zones got their own slots and would traun their own people accordingly.

He said at no time was it contemplated that refugees would be brought from either, the North or the West to be trained in Imo state.

He urged the people of Ehime Mbano, Okigwe zone, and Imo state, to ignore the warmongering calls by Uba to rise against the Federal Government.

He described Uba as a troublemaker, who has gone ahead to resurrect a cloned Thisday publications, where Governor Hope Uzodimma was allegedly pledging to marry off Imo women to Fulani settlers.

The Commissioner said the act was a grand design, orchestrated by Uba and his sponsors to unleash another wave of insecurity in Imo state.

He urged the security agencies to wade into this wave of incitement of the people against the government before it escalated into an ethnic conflagration.

Tunji-Ojo said that the innovation was to ensure that Nigerians no longer have to endure the stress of traveling long distances or waiting in long queues all in the name passport.

“The NIS has also implemented contactless technology, streamlining the passport application process and improving overall efficiency.

“We have also established a cutting-edge data center at the NIS with an impressive storage capacity of 1.4 petabytes.

No $49.8 billion went missing during my presidency –Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed allegations that $49.8 billion went missing during his tenure as the President of Nigeria.

Jonathan made this statement in Abuja on Thursday while speaking at the launch of a book by Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, the former Minister of Finance and National Planning, who served in his administration.

Jonathan acknowledged his respect for the views of the author but expressed disagreement with certain contributions made by the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), now Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II.

Specifically, he refuted Sanusi’s claims that approximately $50 billion went missing from the CBN during his administration.

“Let me mention that I did not agree completely with some issues raised by one of the contributors. But I don’t intend to join issues because he is our royal father, and he is here.

“The one he raised that he was sacked because he blew a whistle that the Federal Government lost $49.8billion is not quite correct.

“He was not sacked, he was suspended because the Financial Reporting Council queried the expenditure of CBN.

“There were serious infractions that needed to be looked at. That was the reason, but somehow, the time was short. So before we finished, his tenure elapsed. Probably, he would have been called back.

“On the issue of $49.8 billion, till today I am not convinced that the Federal Government lost $49.8 billion,” he said.

Forensic Audit on the Allegations

Jonathan further explained that a forensic audit had proven the allegations to be baseless, and the figures quoted by the former CBN governor were inaccurate.

He noted that the budget for that year was around $13 billion, making it implausible for such a large sum to go missing without detection.

Jonathan added that the independent forensic report found that $1.48 billion was unaccounted for, and recommended that the NNPC should deposit the amount into the Federation Account.

“That year, our budget was $31.6 billion. So for a country that had a budget of $31.6 billion to lose about $50 billion and salaries were paid, nobody felt anything. The researchers that wrote this book need to do further research.

“More so, when our revered royal father came up with the figures, first $49.8 billion, later $20 billion and later $12 billion. I don’t even know the correct one.

“Immediately that happened, we commissioned Price Water Coopers (PWC) to do a forensic audit.

“The report they came up with was that $1.48 billion that they couldn’t provide an account for and NNPC should pay that money into the Federation Account.

“They did not say we lost $12 billion, $20 billion or $49.8 billion,” Jonathan added.

Relocate to safe locations, Nigerians warned of flooding

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has warned Nigerians about the risks of flash floods and river overflows due to ongoing heavy rains.

In a statement released on Friday, the NIHSA Director-General, Umar Mohammed, urged citizens to take immediate actions to mitigate the impact of potential flooding.

Umar emphasised the importance of public cooperation, stating, “We must heed the agency’s warning by doing the needful — clearing our drainages and gutters as well as making way for water run-off.”

He noted that the prolonged rainfall across the country has already led to devastating flash floods in several regions.

Highlighting the agency’s commitment, Umar reiterated NIHSA’s mandate for effective water resource management.

“NIHSA will continue to monitor daily the water levels of our major rivers and tributaries, issuing flood warnings and alerts along with providing flood predictions,” he said.

The DG also revealed data on the water levels in key rivers, noting that the “steady rise in the water levels of River Niger and Benue has gotten to the red mark.”

He urged residents living along riverbanks to take precautions, advising them to “relocate to safe locations and secure their lives and property.”

Umar further stressed the collaborative efforts between NIHSA, emergency response agencies, and the media to safeguard lives and property across the nation.

He stated, “It is an effort to help save lives and property of Nigerians, in order to abate flood impact, enhance food security, promote national resilience to flood, thereby fostering sustainable water resources management.”

With the rainy season in full swing, the need for vigilance is paramount. The NIHSA is encouraging all citizens to stay informed and prepared as they monitor the evolving situation.

Over 8 people killed at Ohaji/Egbema cult clash

No fewer than eight persons have been killed in an inter-cult clash in the Awarra and Ochia communities of Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

A community leader who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity on Thursday lamented the inability of the security agencies in the state to check the deadly onslaught of the cultists in the communities.

He said, “Eight people have so far been killed in this clash by the cultists here. Out of the eight lives reported dead in the past weeks, five were members of the cult groups, while three community members slumped and died when they heard the sound of the guns. One person who was abducted has yet to be seen.”

He urged the Nigeria Police and Imo State Government to intervene by making sure that those who ran away from the communities to neighbouring communities out of fear of being killed return home.

“Our people have become displaced and taken refuge in churches in neighbouring communities like Assa, Obile, Obosima, and Umuokanne and they’re dying because they have no food, no access to their homes and farmlands. Imagine people living outside their homes in this economic hardship.”

“To ensure that peace returns to the areas, the communities of Awara and Ochia have constituted a committee to come out with measures to restore peace.”

He expressed hope that the committee would do a good job in the restoration of lasting peace in the area, saying, “We need peace to return to our communities so that people can lead their normal lives.”

A youth leader who pleaded anonymity because of security concerns told newsmen that the clash was a supremacy battle between contending groups over the control of proceeds from oil companies operating in the communities.

He said, “It is a battle by two groups over who will control the proceeds of the money that come to Awarra and Ochia communities by the oil companies that operate there. One group is controlled by a man called Acid while the other is led by Achis, seeking to dislodge it.”

He confirmed that no fewer than four people had been killed in the clashes but noted that normalcy had been restored following the intervention of the government.

“The Commissioner of Police has personally visited Ohaji. The cooperation with the stakeholders is yielding results because we have made several arrests. The security of Ohaji has improved since the current police boss came. We are doing everything possible to restore peace and order in the area.”

Insecurity: 200 Women, CSOs brainstorm on peace-building

Bandits

No fewer than 200 women from four banditry-ravaged local government areas of Katsina State and civil society organizations (CSOs) have brainstormed and re-strategized on how to strengthen peace and security in the state.

The women drawn from the four local governments of Batsari, Jibia, Danmusa and Kankara, through the Women Peace and Security (WPS) initiative of Mercy Corps, converged on Katsina, the state capital, where they deliberated on ways of fostering peace.

The two-day women dialogue was organised by Mercy Corps in collaboration with the Katsina State Ministry of Women Affairs with support from International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD).

Under its Conflict Mitigation and Community Reconciliation in North-west Nigeria (CMCR-NW) project, funded by the European Union (EU), Mercy Corps and partners seek to build the capacity of women and CSOs in peace-building and peaceful co-existence in the state.

One of the participants from Jibia, Amina Mohammed, said the dialogue would assist all women to work harmoniously towards achieving cohesion in the peace-building process in communities rather than working at cross-purposes due to duplicity of activities.

She said Mercy Corps and its partners have empowered them with fresh insights and recommended better ways of working together to ensure peaceful coexistence among communities affected by banditry in Kankara, Jibia, Batsari, Danmusa and other parts of the state.

Another participant, Zainab Aliyu-Kankara, explained that the women’s dialogue served as a veritable platform for them to collectively deliberate on innovative strategies for peace-building in the state, especially in communities ravaged by insecurity.

In her remarks, the Senior Programme Officer of Mercy Corps, Lynda Nkechi Emmanuel, said the two-day women peace and security dialogue was aimed at developing collaborative strategies for promoting peace and security in the state.

According to her, the WPS initiative was a significant step taken by Mercy Corps and partners towards empowering women to play a critical role in promoting peace and security across communities in Katsina State.

She said: “We have over 200 women here who have been selected from Danmusa, Jibia, Batsari and Kankara to discuss the role of women in peacebuilding, identify challenges and opportunities and develop collaborative strategies for promoting peace and security.”

While emphasising the importance of women’s participation in peace-building, the Mercy Corps programme officer encouraged them to take ownership of the initiative by reciprocating the gesture in their respective communities.

In her opening remarks, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hadiza Yar’adua, reiterated the state government’s commitment in tackling security challenges and improving the welfare of women and children affected by conflict.

She assured the participants that the state government under the leadership of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda would continue to prioritise their needs and work towards creating a better living environment for women in the state.

40 children drown during Hindu festival in India

Hindustan Times via Getty Images Women and children bathe in a river during Jivitputrika festival in the Uttar Pradesh state, northern India

At least 46 people – including 37 children and seven women – drowned while celebrating a Hindu religious festival in eastern India, local officials said.

The fatalities were confirmed across 15 districts in the past 24 hours.

A disaster management official said the victims died while ritually bathing in rivers and ponds swollen by recent flooding.

The three-day Jivitputrika festival celebrates children’s wellbeing every year and is also marked with mothers fasting for them.

Officials in Bihar said many people ignored dangerous water levels in rivers while bathing to celebrate the festival.

There are fears that the overall death toll could rise further.

State authorities said families and relatives of the victims will receive compensation.

Deadly accidents have occurred in the past across India during major festivals when huge crowds have gathered in tight spaces with little adherence to safety measures.

In July, at least 121 people were killed in a crush at a religious gathering in the northern Uttar Pradesh state.

In 2018, nearly 60 people were killed after a train rammed into a crowd watching celebrations for Dusshera, a Hindu festival.

Putin proposes new rules for using nuclear weapons

Vladimir Putin says Russia would consider an attack from a non-nuclear state that was backed by a nuclear-armed one to be a “joint attack”, in what could be construed as a threat to use nuclear weapons in the war in Ukraine.

In key remarks on Wednesday night, the Russian president said his government was considering changing the rules and preconditions around which Russia would use its nuclear arsenal.

Ukraine is a non-nuclear state that receives military support from the US and other nuclear-armed countries.

His comments come as Kyiv seeks approval to use long-range Western missiles against military sites in Russia.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has travelled to the US this week and is due to meet US President Joe Biden in Washington on Thursday, where Kyiv’s request is expected to be top of the agenda.

Ukraine has pushed into Russian territory this year and wants to target bases inside Russia which it says are sending missiles into Ukraine.

Responding to Putin’s remarks, Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak said Russia “no longer has anything other than nuclear blackmail to intimidate the world”.

Putin has threatened the use of nuclear weapons before. Ukraine has criticised it as “nuclear sabre-rattling” to deter its allies from providing further support.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the comments as “totally irresponsible” in an MSNBC television interview.

Russian ally China has also called for calm, with reports President Xi Jinping has warned Putin against using nuclear arms.

But on Wednesday, after a meeting with his Security Council, Putin announced the proposed radical expansion.

A new nuclear doctrine would “clearly set the conditions for Russia to transition to using nuclear weapons,” he warned – and said such scenarios included conventional missile strikes against Moscow.

He said that Russia would consider such a “possibility” of using nuclear weapons if it detected the start of a massive launch of missiles, aircraft and drones into its territory, which presented a “critical threat” to the country’s sovereignty.

He added: “It is proposed that aggression against Russia by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear state, be considered as their joint attack on the Russian Federation.”

The country’s nuclear arms were “the most important guarantee of security of our state and its citizens”, the Kremlin leader said.

Since the end of World War Two, nuclear-armed states have engaged in a policy of deterrence, which is based on the idea that if warring states were to launch major nuclear strikes it would lead to mutually assured destruction.

But there are also tactical nuclear weapons which are smaller warheads designed to destroy targets without widespread radioactive fallout.

In June, Putin delivered a warning to European countries supporting Ukraine, saying Russia had “many more [tactical nuclear weapons] than there are on the European continent, even if the United States brings theirs over.”

“Europe does not have a developed [early warning system],” he added. “In this sense they are more or less defenceless.”

At the time he had hinted of changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine – the document which sets out the conditions under which Moscow would use nuclear weapons.

The Kremlin said on Thursday that changes outlined by Putin should be considered a warning to the West.

World’s longest-serving death row inmate acquitted in Japan

An 88-year-old man who is the world’s longest-serving death row inmate has been acquitted by a Japanese court, after it found that evidence used against him was fabricated.

Iwao Hakamada, who was on death row for almost half a century, was found guilty in 1968 of killing his boss, the man’s wife and their two teenage children.

He was recently granted a retrial amid suspicions that investigators may have planted evidence that led to his conviction for quadruple murder.

The 46 years spent on death row has taken a heavy toll on Hakamada’s mental health, though, meaning he was unfit to attend the hearing where his acquittal was finally handed down.

Hakamada’s case is one of Japan’s longest and most famous legal sagas, and has attracted widespread public interest, with some 500 people lining up for seats in the courtroom in Shizuoka on Thursday.

As the verdict was handed down, Hakamada’s supporters outside the court cheered “banzai” – a Japanese exclamation that means “hurray”.

Hakamada, who was exempted from all hearings due to his deteriorated mental state, has been living under the care of his 91-year-old sister Hideko since 2014, when he was freed from jail and granted a retrial.

She fought for decades to clear his name and said it was sweet to hear the words “not guilty” in court.

“When I heard that, I was so moved and happy, I couldn’t stop crying,” she told reporters.

Her brother has previously said his battle for justice was like “fighting a bout every day”. “Once you think you can’t win, there is no path to victory,” he told AFP news agency in 2018.

A former professional boxer, Hakamada was working at a miso processing plant in 1966 when the bodies of his employer, the man’s wife and two children were recovered from a fire at their home in Shizuoka, west of Tokyo. All four had been stabbed to death.

Authorities accused Hakamada of murdering the family, setting fire to their home and stealing 200,000 yen in cash.

Hakamada initially denied having robbed and murdered the victims, but later gave what he came to describe as a coerced confession following beatings and interrogations that lasted up to 12 hours a day.

In 1968 he was convicted of murder and arson, and sentenced to death.

The decades-long legal saga ultimately turned on some clothes found in a tank of miso a year after Hakamada’s arrest. Those clothes, purportedly bloodstained, were used to incriminate him.

For years, however, Hakamada’s lawyers argued that the DNA recovered from the clothes did not match his, raising the possibility that the items belonged to someone else. The lawyers further suggested that police could have fabricated the evidence.

Uzodimma: A commitment towards expanding APC frontiers, championing Tinubu’s 2027 return

GOV UZODIMMA

SIMON EBEGBULEM…

The most recent victory of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the national level, at the sub national off season governorship election in Edo State, once again brings to the fore, the untiring efforts of notable individuals of the party, towards expanding the frontiers and making it the party of first choice by Nigerians.

Try as it may, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) baseless attempts to exonerate itself from the hardship confronting Nigerians, the effects of which the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has frontally taken on to reverse, via the Renewed Hope Agenda, will ever be to the utter shame and regret of PDP.

Assuredly, and in the not too distant, as more of the gains of the re-engineering matrix of  the administration bear more fruits, then would the true meaning of the fabled 60-years-rule by the PDP and the juggernauts that touted it, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, dawn on Nigerians. Their plan being to put Nigerians under perpetual and everlasting bondage, misery and suffering.

Nigerians are now wiser, and nothing encapsulates this more than the APC’s thumping that brought a well deserving end to the Godwin Obaseki eight years of maladministration in Edo State, and back into the fold of the forward looking APC.
Under the instruction of the leadership of the APC led by President Bola Tinubu, that Edo State should be salvaged and recovered back to the fold of the party, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State was beckoned on to lead other Progressives governors in ensuring that the mission is accomplished, applying all democratic principles.

Governor Uzodimma is one of the silent heroes that worked day and night to make this come to reality, and once again ensure that democracy flourishes in Edo and its dividends cascade down to the good people of the state, under the leadership of the Governor-Elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, beginning November 12 and beyond.

Senator Hope Uzodimma, fondly called ONWA by teeming supporters and admirers comes with lots of Democratic antecedents predating his mounting of the saddle as Imo State Governor, in 2020.

A former member of the Upper Chambers of the National Assembly, he, not unlike President Tinubu, who he holds in the highest of regards and esteem, has joined in expanding the frontiers of the party, ensuring notable spread across the Niger and far beyond the Heartland state, where he has continued to endear the ruling party to all and sundry.

With sterling performance in Imo, which has expectedly rubbed off on Ndi Imo at the federal levels, through appointments, added to the glaring Federal presence in the state and coupled with his administration’s unsurpassed infrastructural and economic development strides, Governor Uzodimma has continued to garner accolades from far and wide, several of which has translated into more recognition and added responsibilities.

Into his first tenure in office, colleagues from the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, in recognition of his leadership qualities made Senator Hope Uzodimma Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, while President Bola Tinubu, even from before coming into office, has chosen to work with him, charging him with the most sensitive of assignments, of which he has creditably discharged and delivered on.

In the process and along the ways, the APC has gained and continues to add, a windfall of notable and heavyweight defectors from the major opposition parties in the geo-political zone, into its fold.

The landmark APC victory in Edo
Right from the beginning, Governor Uzodimma has been in the tick of the battle to rightfully return Edo State, back to the fold, working assiduously with others, including the leader of the APC in the state, Senator Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, a former two-term governor, to make this manifest.

It is therefore no surprise that following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of Senator Monday Okpebholo as winner of the September 21 election, on Sunday, congratulatory messages poured in from high, far and near. Uzodimma being a loyal party leader may not understand what he and others have achieved in getting Edo back to the APC fold, but those who have followed the political history of the state will better understand.

After Comrade Oshiomhole left the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as its President , people from all walks of life, advised him to contest for the Presidency of this nation. But Oshiomhole opted to run for the governorship after the masses of Edo State persuaded him to come and lead them out of the PDP conundrum. That was how Oshiomhole joined in the governorship race in 2007, under the umbrella of the then Action Congress, with alliance with the Labour movement. However he was rigged out by the PDP and Edo people cried foul. The current President, Ahmed Bola Tinubu mobilised resources for Oshiomhole and recruited forensic experts who deployed the most modern of techniques, including recounting the ballot papers used for the election. That was how, on March 20, 2008 the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal nullified the election of Prof. Osarhiemen Osunbor and declared Oshiomhole the authentic winner of the poll. And, on 11 November, 2008, the Court of Appeal upheld the ruling of the state election petition tribunal declaring Oshiomhole winner. Therefore, Governor Obaseki made one of his too numerous blunders, when he and his cohorts came with their usual rhetoric that, “Edo is not Lagos.”

Sadly, after the efforts made by the now President Tinubu and Oshiomhole to bring Edo into the APC, Governor Obaseki who was handed the ticket of the party by the latter, against all odds, took the state back to PDP to the chagrin of many, including President Tinubu and Oshiomhole.
It is therefore understood, why President Tinubu deployed his political ally in the South East, the political strategist, Governor Hope Uzodimma, to return Edo back to the APC fold.

Uzodimma did just that, applying all democratic tenets. He campaigned to the Igbo community in Edo vigorously and reminded them of all the anti democratic actions of Governor Obaseki, which includes his refusal to swear-in 14 elected members of the state House of Assembly. He rallied his colleague governors to ensure that the dream of Mr President is achieved in Edo.

By reclaiming Edo State to the APC, Governor Uzodimma is already galvanizing support for President Tinubu’s 2027 second term bid, which is well expected; clearing all hurdles and expanding the political horizon of the APC come 2027.

It is not surprising that today he is refered to as the “Lion” of the South East. As chairman of the South East Governors, Uzodimma has been able to propagate the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, and today we are witnessing the influx of people into the APC in the South East.

The APC National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, while congratulating Senator Monday Okpebholo, commended the political sagacity of Uzodimma and other progressive governors.

“We look forward to a prosperous new chapter for Edo state,” said Ganduje.
There was wild jubilation in the ancient of Benin, when the Returning Officer (RO) for the Edo State governorship election and Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, Niger State, Prof. Faruk Adamu Kuta, declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC as the winner of the keenly-contested election at 9:26 p.m. on Sunday, September 22.
He announced that Okpebholo, representing the Edo Central Senatorial District, secured 291,667 votes to defeat the PDP candidate, Dr Asue Ighodalo, who got 247,274 votes.

The Labour Party’s (LP) Olumide Akpata, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), came a distant third, securing 22,763 votes. This declaration ended the plot by governor Obaseki to continue to keep Edo under the stranglehold of his factional PDP. And thanks to Governor Uzodimma whose superior political dexterity rescued the state from that stranglehold. For sure, President Tinubu can now relax, that his APC has made a major in-road into the South South ahead 2027.

NYC mayor charged with bribery, illegal campaign funds

Prosecutors have charged New York City Mayor Eric Adams with five counts of criminal offences, including bribery, wire fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations.

The indictment unveiled on Thursday alleges Adams sought and accepted illegal campaign funds and over $100,000 (£75,000) in luxury travel benefits from Turkish businessmen and an official seeking to gain his influence.

Adams, 64, is a former police officer who was elected to lead the most populous US city nearly three years ago on a promise to be tough on crime.

The mayor has denied any wrongdoing and rejected calls for his resignation.

“I ask New Yorkers to wait to hear our defence before making any judgments,” Adams said at his press conference on Thursday.

“I follow the rules, I follow the federal law, I do not do anything that’s going to participate in illegal campaign activity.”

The news conference was regularly interrupted by New York residents who called Adams a “disgrace” to the city and asked for “justice”.

If convicted, the mayor could face up to 45 years in prison.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul – who has the power to remove the mayor from his post – said on Thursday she was reviewing the charges.

The 57-page indictment lays out an alleged scheme of corruption and bribery that spans a decade, beginning when he was the Brooklyn borough president. The corrupt activity continued after he became mayor, the documents alleged, and included extravagant international travel.

In one alleged text exchange included in the indictment, an Adams staffer and an airline manager discuss where the mayor should stay on a trip to Turkey.

After the airline manager suggests the Four Seasons, the staffer replies “it’s too expensive”.

“Why does he care? He is not going to pay,” the manager replies.

“Super,” the Adams staffer says.

Prosecutors claim that same staffer asked the airline manager to charge Adams an artificial price for his travel, to conceal the favourable treatment.

“His every step is being watched right now,” the staffer says, suggesting the mayor be charged $1,000 for a flight to Turkey. “Let it be somewhat real.”

At a Thursday press conference, US attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams alleged that the mayor developed relationships with foreign nationals to take in illegal funds for his 2021 campaign.

“In 2023 the mayor rekindled these corrupt relationships, seeking more illegal campaign contributions from some of the same foreign sources to support his re-election campaign,” said Mr Williams.

The indictment notes Adams used straw donors – a scheme that a person or entity uses to evade campaign finance limits – to take in illegal donations from foreign entities.

Prosecutors say his campaign also applied and received NYC funds that are supposed to match small dollar contributions from city residents, which amounted to more than $10m.

He is also accused of seeking to conceal the benefits he received, hiding the gifts from annual disclosure forms and telling a co-conspirator he “always” deleted text messages related to illegal trips and gifts, according to court documents.

Their argument was enough to persuade Judge Hiroaki Murayama, who in 2014 noted that “the clothes were not those of the defendant”.

Boat mishaps: Loss of 182 lives in 3 years unacceptable – Gov Bago

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has sounded the alarm over the high number of lives lost to boat accidents in the state, with a staggering 182 casualties recorded in the past three years.

The governor, through his deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, spoke at the 2024 World Maritime Day celebration and distribution of 33 Fiber Glass Boats, held at the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) headquarters in Minna on Thursday.

Decrying the situation, he noted, “The huge number of loss we have incurred as a result of boat mishaps in the state is unacceptable

“From the available data, the state lost a total of 95 lives in 2022, 68 lives in 2023 and so far this year ( 2024) 19 casualties have been recorded. No life is worthy more than the other, we should all walk the talk to halt the menace.”

Bago also commended N-HYPPADEC for their timely intervention, acknowledging that the gesture will greatly alleviate the suffering of riverine communities while reiterating the state government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of inland waterways for year-round transportation.

Earlier, the Managing director of N- HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, explained that the 2024 World Maritime Day coincided with the commissioning of fibre glass boats to be distributed to riverine communities along the rivers and lakes of hydroelectric dams across N-HYPPADEC member states.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Navigating the Future: Safety First’, he explained that the Commission decided to procure the fibre glass boats to enhance marine transportation and mitigate the recurrence of boat mishaps, which have plagued the communities for many years.

Yelwa also recalled the painful loss of several lives in boat accidents, a development which caused untold hardship in the communities neighboring the Kainji Lake between the vicinity of Shagunu of Borgu Emirate in Niger State and Warrah of Yauri Emirate in Kebbi State.

According to him, “Recognising the dangers posed by water snags, we collaborated with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to carry out a water snags clearing project.

“Together, we removed a considerable number of tree logs from parts of the Kainji and Shiroro Lakes, significantly reducing the likelihood of boat accidents caused by the snags.”

Anambra commences payment of new minimum wage, October

The Anambra State Government has said it will start paying the new minimum wage of N70,000 from October 2024.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo made the revelation on Thursday at Prof. Dora Akunyili Women’s Development Centre, Awka while meeting with principals and head teachers in public primary and secondary schools.

According to Soludo, “From next week, the free education policy will be available to senior students in all public schools in Anambra.

“I assure that even with the binding resource constraint, this administration will continue to work very hard to deliver on the mandate.

“From next month, we also hope to start paying the new minimum wage of N70,000.”

The state under Soludo had previously announced the free education policy for primary schools and junior secondary.

With the new announcement by the governor, the state will maintain full free education for all primary pupils, junior and senior secondary school students in the state.

INEC presents Certificates of Return to Gov-elect, Okpebholo, Deputy-elect

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday in Abuja presented Certificates of Return to the Edo State governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and his deputy, Hon. Dennis Idahosa.

The INEC National Commissioner in charge of Edo State, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, presented the certificates at the national headquarters of the commission.

Speaking briefly after the event, Okpebholo said he would work for the people of the state, while also thanking them for giving them their mandate.

The event had in attendance the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

Other dignitaries were the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu; Senator Matthew Uroghide, Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd), Senator Francis Alimikhena, Hon. Ogbeide Ihama, Hon. Omosede Igbinedion and Blessing Agbonmhere among others.

Also speaking, Ganduje said the incoming governor has a blueprint to develop the state.

His words: “Edo State was an APC state. Later on, the governor as a nomadic politician, cross carpeted to PDP, but today, we fought for it and we have recovered our state for the APC.

“I am so happy because essentially, our governor-elect an experienced politician, a distinguished senator has a blueprint for the development of Edo State and we assure you, you will see great changes.”

On his part, a former governor of the state, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, said that the people of Edo State now have a governor that would respect them.

He added that the people were excited because they now have a governor who would not be fighting with the traditional institution over artifacts, or demolishing a hospital only to replace it with a museum.

Oshiomhole stated: “For us, it is a new dawn. When a lion moves into your home and starts destroying your things, the power of democracy is that because the process is tenured, when it is time, the ordinary people will now have the potency to make a verdict about the tenure of Governor Obaseki and the verdict is now.

“The important thing that I am happy about is that Edo people now have a new governor who will not disrespect them. We now have a governor who will respect our traditional institutions, the heart of our culture. We now have a governor who will not be fighting about artifacts.

“We now have a governor who will not demolish a hospital and replace it with a museum. We now have a governor who understands the value of education and will not destroy a library and replace it with a market. For me, this is what excites Edo people.”

Court declines APC request to stop Kano LG polls

Court...gravel and hammer

A Federal High Court in Kano has declined an application by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from conducting local government elections scheduled for October 26.

The APC, alongside its member Aminu Aliyu-Tiga, sought an injunction to prevent the elections from taking place and requested an order to maintain the status quo.

In his ruling, Justice Simon Amobeda refused the prayers of the applicants and ordered that the respondents, which include KANSIEC, the Kano State House of Assembly, the Attorney General of Kano State, and various security agencies, should be notified to present their reasons for opposing the injunction.

“The respondents shall be put on notice to show cause why the prayers should not be granted,” stated Justice Amobeda.

While denying the interim injunction, the court granted an accelerated hearing for the case. Justice Amobeda directed all parties to file necessary documents swiftly to ensure the timely resolution of the matter.

“No party shall undertake any action that may prejudice the hearing or quick determination of this case,” the judge further emphasized.

The case has been adjourned to October 4 for the hearing.

Meanwhile, a separate ruling by a Kano State High Court on September 24 restrained 19 political parties from taking any steps that could disrupt the upcoming local government elections in Kano State.

Sudan army launches major attack on capital Khartoum

Sudan’s army has launched a major offensive against the powerful paramilitary group it is fighting in the country’s civil war, targeting areas in the capital it lost at the start of the conflict.

In dawn strikes on Thursday, government forces shelled Rapid Support Forces (RSF) bases in the capital Khartoum, and Bahri to its north.

Sudan has been embroiled in a war since the army and the RSF began a vicious struggle for power in April 2023, leading to what the UN has called one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

Up to 150,000 people have been killed in the conflict while more than 10 million people – about a fifth of the population – have been forced from their homes.

The military escalation comes despite US-led efforts to broker a ceasefire, which is being discussed on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this week.

Residents of the capital said the artillery and air strikes started overnight and intensified at dawn.

Numerous accounts said the army crossed key bridges over the River Nile – which had separated government-controlled areas in Omdurman from the regions controlled by the RSF.

The RSF claimed to have repelled the attempts, but sounds of clashes and plumes of smoke were reported coming from locations in central Khartoum.

Since early in the war, the paramilitaries have been in control of nearly all of the capital.

Thursday’s advances appear to be the government’s first significant push in months to regain some territory.

Speaking later at the UN General Assembly in New York, Sudan’s de facto leader, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, said that he supported efforts to bring an end to the war, but only if they brought an end to the RSF’s occupation of Sudanese territory.

He questioned why the international community had not stepped in to help counter the group, and accused states in the region of “providing funding and mercenaries for their own political and economic benefit, in flagrant violation of law and international will”.

The UN has called for “immediate” action to protect civilians and end the fighting.

It says that, since the start of September, it has documented at least 78 civilian deaths as a result of artillery shelling and air strikes in the greater Khartoum area.

Much of the worst and most intense fighting has taken place in heavily populated regions. Both sides have accused each other of indiscriminately bombing civilian areas.

“Relentless hostilities across the country have brought misery to millions of civilians, triggering the world’s fastest-growing displacement crisis,” warned the UN on Wednesday.

It noted that half of the 10 million people who had fled their homes were children, while at least two million have sought protection in neighbouring countries.

It also called Sudan “the world’s largest hunger crisis”. There are fears of widespread famine as people have not been able to grow any crops.

There have also been warnings of a possible genocide against non-Arabs in the western region of Darfur.

A cholera epidemic is also raging throughout the country- more than 430 people have died from the easily-treatable disease in the past month, the health ministry said on Wednesday.

But getting treatment to those affected areas is hugely complicated by the conflict.

‘Disclose the cost of your petrol’ — Reps tell Dangote Refinery

Dangote Refinery

The House of Representatives has told Aliko Dangote, the owner Dangote Refinery, to disclose the cost he is selling petroleum from his refinery to NNPC Limited and other major marketers.

The lawmakers also asked NNPC to disclose the amounts the refinery is paying for crude oil.

This resolution followed a motion moved by Oboku Oforji on Thursday during plenary.

DAILY POST reports that there has been dispute between NNPC Limited and Dangote Refinery over the cost per litre of petrol from the refinery.

NNPC Limited has claimed to be buying petrol at N898/litre from Dangote, however, the refiner disputed the figure, stating that it is selling less than the amount.

To address challenges surrounding the distribution of its products, the lawmakers urged the management of Dangote Refinery to build, acquire or partner to get Tank Farms or depot across the geo-political zones in the country.

In the motion, Oforji commended the refinery for its impact on energy sovereignty of the country.

“Nigeria is driving towards energy self-sufficiency, cost and foreign exchange savings, meeting the increasing demand for fuels, attraction of foreign capital investment, generation of Forex through export of finished product,” he said.

To achieve sustainability, Oforji said Dangote Refinery should sell products directly to the independent marketers.

The motion was adopted unanimously by the lawmakers.
