Police arrest Ndume’s aide, supporters over rally

Police in Borno State have arrested the legislative aide of Senator Ali Ndume, alongside two of his supporters in Biu town and detained them in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The wife of the aide, Amina Kachalla, confirmed that her husband, Shehu Usman Aliyu (Babandi), was arrested alongside two others: Tasiu Hassan Malgwi and Ibrahim Adamu.

“I’m appealing to the police to release my husband. He is our breadwinner and we have been suffering since the day he was arrested”, she said.

The spokesman of Borno State Police Command, Kenneth Daso, confirmed the arrest, adding that it was based on an intelligence report.

“It was based on intelligence that they were arrested and the investigation is ongoing. I will follow up the case and keep you updated”, he added.

Although the PPRO did not give details of the case, other supporters attributed it to an aborted solidarity rally they organised over Ndume’s removal as chief whip of the Senate.

It was reported last week that the ousted Chief Whip’s supporters, including youths and women groups, clubs and associations, had planned to stage the rally in Biu town last Saturday, but later shelved it due to what they described as fragile security situation in the state.

A press statement signed by Ndumes Senior Legislative Aide (Media), Junaid Jubrin Maiva, read: The general public is hereby informed that the solidarity rally scheduled to take place on 28th July 2024, in Biu, in support of Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has been cancelled.

Maiva said the cancellation came in light of potential conflicts with a proposed nationwide protest and concerns over possible disruptions.

A family source in Biu revealed that, three of them were arrested last Sunday in Biu by a team of armed policemen and whisked to Maiduguri for interrogation.

It was learnt that the police authorities have secured a court order to detain the alleged organisers of the solidarity rally pending the conclusion of the investigation.

Also, there is tension amongst the teeming supporters of the senator in southern Borno, who faulted the arrest, describing it as a witch-hunt.

#EndbadGovernance: No protest in SEast, were mourning Iwuanyanwu, Agu, Uba —Igbo Elders

South East

The Igbo Elders Consultative Forum has distanced itself from the proposed national protest, stating that the South-East people will not participate in any demonstration.

This decision was made known on Tuesday, emphasizing their commitment to peace and stability in the region.

During a press briefing in Abuja, Chief (Dr.) Simon Okeke and Prof. Charles Nwekeakwu, Chairman and Secretary of the Igbo Elders Consultative Forum, respectively, urged all Nigerians to work towards a prosperous, just, and equitable society.

They emphasized that the Igbo people have resolved to work with other ethnic groups to restructure the Nigerian state for the betterment of all citizens.

The Igbo Elders condemned the alleged hate speech and incitement of violence by Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson for President Tinubu, who linked the Igbo people to the national protest and tagged Peter Obi, a presidential candidate, as the leader of the protest.

Furthermore, the Igbo Elders called on President Tinubu to caution his spokesperson and ensure that his actions do not misrepresent the presidency or create the impression of a presidential animus against the Igbo people.

They also demanded that the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services hold those responsible for any violence against the Igbo people or Peter Obi accountable.

In addition, the Igbo Elders reiterated their call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, as a key step towards resolving the security challenges in the South-East region.

They emphasized that the Igbo people are mourning the loss of their illustrious sons and leaders, Engr. Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Sir (Arc.) Ferdinand Agu, and Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Uba, and will not be distracted by the proposed national protest.

The Igbo elders said, Before his death, our leader, Chief Iwuanyanwu, spoke with the necessary emphasis and authority, on behalf of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Worldwide, that the Igbos are not part of any protest at this time in the history of the country.

“After the crisis of the 2023 presidential elections, the Igbos have resolved to work with other ethnic groups to restructure the Nigerian state for prosperity, justice, and peace.

“We will not shy away from the duties of patriotism and courageous citizenship. As we promote peace and prosperity for Nigeria and show respect to other Nigerian peoples, we will demand the same from others.

“It is unacceptable and a gross provocation for any Nigerian, no matter how highly placed or privileged, to overlook the clear statement of Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo that the Igbos are not part of any national protest and spread malicious.

“We ask President Tinubu to call Bayo Onanuga to order so that he does not misrepresent the presidency and create the impression of a presidential animus against Igbos. We ask the Nigerian Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to hold Mr. Bayo Onanuga and members of his hateful gang responsible for any violence against Igbos or Mr. Peter Obi. We also want to use this opportunity to maintain our call on Mr. President to do everything possible to resolve the security challenges in the South East, including the release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.

“Once again, if only for emphasis and for avoidance of doubt, Ndigbo are not protesting; we are mourning the sad deaths of our illustrious sons and leaders”, the elders added.

Ikeduru SOLAD, Hon Justice Nze, weeps, mourns Iwuanyanwu’s death

Information confirming the death of Nigeria’s prominent political idol and business mogul of Ikeduru local government area origin, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu was not an easy one for the Sole Administrator (SolAd) of Ikeduru local government, Hon Justice Nze to bear.

Last Friday, July 26, 2024 was a day of mourning in the entire Ikeduru, particularly, at Iho, the local government headquarters with local government activities at the lowest.

Lamenting over the death of the prominent elder statesman, who was until his sudden demise, the father of Ndigbo and President-General of Igbo umbrella socio-cultural organization, the Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Hon Nze posited that Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu died at a time when his fatherly disposition and advice to political leaders in Igbo affairs and Nigeria in general were needed most.

According to the Ikeduru Sole Administrator, although the former Nigeria’s two-time presidential aspirant died at a ripe age, his sudden exit has created a big vacuum that would, for a long time, be difficult to fill.

Describing Chief Iwuanyanwu as a man with the ‘ Midas Touch’ who according to him, for so many years, bestrode the political walls of Ikeduru, Mbaike, Imo and Southeast Geo-political Zone of Nigeria and the business world like a colossus, Hon Justice Nze recalled that the Atta Ikeduru-born Billionaire Igbo Son, in his philanthropy, impacted positively on thousands of people cut across the length and breath of this country through his scholarship schemes and who are today well to do in their respective areas of endeavors, scattered all over the world. The local government Boss described Chief Iwuanyanwu as a good Christian who led a good Christian life, built and supported churches and as a true Nigerian, built mosques for our brother moslems. He described him as a peace lover, maker and builder during his lifetime.

According to the local government helmsman, politically, it is on record that Chief Iwuanyanwu made so many local government chairmen, House of Assembly members, Governors, Senators, House of Reps members and Ministers to mention but few cut across Imo and the entire southeast. His brief stay as the President of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide was very impactful. Economically, his big footprints were seen and still evident in virtually all areas of our nation’s economy and beyond.

Praying that the Almighty God, in His infinite mercies, would give his immediate family, Atta indigenes, the people of Ikeduru, Owerri senatorial district, Ndi Imo, Ndigbo and indeed Nigeria in general the heart to bear the irreparable loss, the Ikeduru SolAd charged other prominent Nigerian politicians to emulate Chief Iwuanyanwu’s good lifestyle who according to him, was a truly detribalised Nigerian. He concluded by saying that Ikeduru, Owerri Zone, Imo, Ndigbogburugburu and indeed Nigeria would miss him and would remember him for a long time to come.

After the controversies that followed the throne of Arochukwuaccient kingdom, His Royal Majesty Dr. Eberechukwu Kanu Oji has been coronated as the 9th Eze Aro of Aro Kingdom as governor Alex Otti commended the people for making the right and best choice.

Speaking during the ceremony, at the ancient kingdom, the Governor commended Aro people for making the right and best choice in choosing His Royal Majesty Dr. Eberechukwu Kanu Oji.

In his words, “I have no doubt that majority of Aro people are very happy with what is happening today. There may be one or two people that are not happy.

“Let me make one point clear, any society that does not have leadership is a cursed Society, leadership comes neither from the East, West, North or South. The Bible recorded that power comes from God. And at his own time, He makes things beautiful.

“So, I will like to use what happened in Aro and recommend it to other societies. Why do I say so? Gone are the days when people choose the worst rather than the best as leaders.

“I want to say without any fear of contradiction that Aro people made the best choice. From what I have seen, from what I have read, from what I have heard about the 9th Eze Aro, he is the best in his class.

“He is the type of leader that every society should aim to have. A leader that will invest in the community rather than stealing from the community, a leader that will show the light rather than initiating people into darkness, a leader that has a second address (a profession)”, The governor noted.

The governor with the newly crownedEze, wife and members of his family.

Speaking, Eze Eberechukwu Oji thanked all who came for his coronation declaiming a new dawn with good things to come for the people of Arochukwu kingdom.

Planned hardship protest; Mr Peter Obi, Otti speaks

By Henrietta Ashikodi

The presidential candidate of Labour Party, in 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi and the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, have spoken concerning the planned protest as they agreed that there is hunger and hardship in the land, but expressed fear that the protest might be hijacked by hoodlums.

The duo spoke sepperatly to the Press on Sunday, in the Country Home of Governor Otti at Umuehim Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government area of Abia State after a Private Breakfast Meeting between two leaders.

Speaking, Mr Obi said that the planned protest is caused by hunger and hopelessness among Nigerians.

He said within the Nigerian constitutions, protest is allowed, while he plead that those who are protesting should do so within the law and in civil manner.

According to him, “everybody knows that things are difficult and I always say that when they talk about the sponsors of protest, the sponsors are very simple, it is hunger, it is hopelessness among the youths. So, we all have to listen to what Nigerians are going through and I thank our Governor for doing so. It is critical and important”.

He called on the security agencies to ensure that they manage the protests within the law and advised the government to engage with the protesters and dialogue with them towards addressing the reasons for the protests.

“What I have to say to the security agencies is to ensure that they manage the situation, again within the law. We should not try to be overbearing. It should be something that we do within the law.

“Protest is allowed everywhere globally. And, I also say that people protest in my house and it is for us to listen to those who are protesting and why they are protesting and engage them. That is what governance is all about, you talk with them, there is nothing wrong in that. I was Governor for years and people protested and we kept dialoquing and deliberating about it”.

Speaking also The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, agreed that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria allows for peaceful protests and equally agreed that protest must be done within the ambits of the law. Governor Otti expressed worry that the protests may be hijacked by unpatriotic elements thereby creating more problems than the reason for the protests.

“Protests are allowed once they are done within the ambits of the law. But the real challenge is who can ensure or assure us that it will be done within the ambits of the law. We have seen protests hijacked. My fears are that this one will also be hijacked”.

“Even when you write a letter it is a protest. You can sit down and write a letter of protest, you can call somebody and register your displeasure about what he is doing or how he is running government. They are all protest and allowed. But when you now go outside the law and begin to unleash mayhem and violence that is where it is not acceptable”.

“First of all, for you to organize protest, the law requires that you inform and get the approval of the security agencies, particularly the police. Somebody should take responsibility for getting that approval. So, if you don’t have the approval, then it will be against the law for you to go out on the streets to protest”.

Speaking further, Governor Otti explained that those not involved in the protest are also entitled to their freedom as it will be against the law to deny them that.

“Secondly everyone has a right of free movement. So, if you block the road and you stop people from moving around, then, you have broken the law. So, there are several parts to it that may not be under the control of whoever that is calling for the protest”.

“My attitude to it is, yes, we’ve heard what you are saying and it will be very, very unfair to say that things are not difficult now. Things are very difficult. Hunger is real and that is true. But how do you solve the problem”?

“The problem we found ourselves in the country is economic and will I say that we are actually paying the prize for bad governance that didn’t start today. And, if you sat down and printed almost 24 trillion naira that is not backed by any productivity, then someday, somehow, like now, you will pay for it because if you understand how the economy works, when you have so much cash chasing a certain basket of goods, that would not increase the goods because you have more cash but prices will go up”.

“So, there are very, very few options left than this difficulty that we are going through. If we are patient and go through it, then after that, I believe the economy will reverse and things will begin to look better.

The Governor emphasized the need for Nigeria to transit into a productive economy and import less of what we consume, warning that what is happening to our naira will be a child’s play if we continue to consume imported products. He also explained that transiting to a productive economy cannot be achieved overnight.

NAF Airstrikes Destroy 12 Illegal Refining Sites In Abia, Rivers

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe destroyed 12 illegal refining sites and two reservoirs in airstrikes in Abia and Rivers States.

The Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, AVM Edward Gabkwet, made this known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Gabkwet said the NAF had intensified efforts to minimise the activities of oil thieves and other economic saboteurs in the Niger Delta.

He said that the armed reconnaissance undertaken by the aircraft revealed several illegal refining sites located in many fenced households at Umueze in Abia.

He said the information was subsequently relayed to ground troops for further exploitation and necessary action.

According to him, the illegal refining sites, which were subsequently destroyed, were observed hidden under thick vegetation around Owaza.

”Thereafter, the crew followed the river line down to Komkom and Okoloma in Rivers State, where nine illegal refining sites and two reservoirs were discovered and destroyed.

”In total, 12 illegal refining sites and two reservoirs were destroyed.

”The sighting of illegal refining sites in fenced living environments is indicative of the sophistry of the illegal oil refining trade that would require other means beyond air strikes to checkmate,” Gabwet said.

He said that those engaged in these acts, especially in fenced living environments, should be reminded that such illegal activities were dangerous to human lives and health as well as the environment.

”Be that as may, armed reconnaissance missions as well as destruction of illegal refining sites will continue unabated until crude oil theft and other forms of economic sabotage are reduced to the barest minimum,” he said. (NAN)

Akinteye said, “The leadership of NANS, during its 84th National Senate sitting, ratified this decision, among others. We urgently appeal to the Federal Government to address any impasse caused by the pressing issue of the Dangote refinery. Among many other businesses in Nigeria, the company has done remarkably well in enhancing the economic fortunes of our dear country by providing employment for many young people, supporting the construction of critical infrastructure through its Corporate Social Responsibility, and other contributions to governance in Nigeria.

“In the same vein, resolving the impasse with the company and ensuring that the refinery operates at full capacity will bring immense benefits to our economy, such as reducing fuel costs, creating jobs, stimulating economic growth, and contributing to our country’s GDP.

“Resolving this operational conflict with the refinery will significantly alleviate the economic hardship faced by many Nigerians, providing much-needed relief to the common man,” he stated.

He lamented that Nigerians were facing economic hardship and appealed to the President Bola Tinubu-led government to put more effort into ameliorating their suffering. “We are not oblivious to the current economic hardship in the country. It is crucial to still appreciate some of the efforts and achievements of the current government of President Tinubu in ameliorating the living conditions of Nigerians.

“While emphasising these achievements is not an attempt to be partisan or take sides with the current administration, we would like to clarify that the current economic challenges are not peculiar to Nigeria but a global phenomenon,” he explained.

In an effort to ensure regular availability of petroleum products and cooking gas in Imo State, and at uniform prices, the dealers, under the auspices of ‘Imo State Petroleum Marketers and Dealers’ and the State House of Assembly Committee members, saddled with the oversight functions, have taken some far-reaching decisions to address some identified problem areas arising from the subsector.

The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at the Conference Hall of the Assembly Chambers also took a look at necessary measures to ensure public safety of installation of cooking gas stations, eradication of oil bunkering, and participation of the marketers in the ‘Gas Revolution’ by the Federal Government, among other critical areas.

Addressing their invitees, Chairman of the Committee, Hon Uzoma Francis Osuoha, laid bare the reasons behind the meeting.

They included; petroleum distribution and variation in prices; irregular and illegal proliferation of cooking gas outlets in unauthorized areas in the state; the issue of bunkering petroleum products; the participation of Imo marketers in the ‘Gas Revolution’ by the Federal Government; oil companies and the local content advantages vis-a-vis distribution and local communities,” among others.

While demanding for reasons in the disparity in prices of petroleum products in various filling stations across the state, the committee explained that Imo citizens are going through excruciating pains due to the prevailing economy.

On the irregular proliferation of gas installation across the state, the committee bemoaned the dangers and high risks associated with the setting up of gas outlets and plants within residential areas, as seen almost in every corner of the state capital, Owerri, and questioned what the regulators are doing in that regard, saying that gas stations were not supposed to be installed in residential areas, no matter the supposed protective measures being taken.

On the issue of oil bunkering, the committee seriously lamented the negative effects of bunkering activities going on within and around Imo state, demanding to know those who patronize such illegal and unlawful activities, adding, “Without the sellers, there would be no buyers, and by extension, pipeline vandalism.”

On the issue of Imo marketers participating in the Gas Revolution initiated by the Federal Government, the Committee requested to know how the marketers were availing themselves of the opportunities available in the state, from the companies involved in gas manufacturing, distribution and sales.

The committee also raised the issue of oil companies operating in the state, and the advantages that should be accruing to the State Government and generally, to the state.

It said that the end product of the oil companies doing business in the state should be able to be accessed by the marketers participating in the business, as is the practice in other climes.

It also bemoaned the shortage of diesel (Automatic Gas Oil) supply in the state, while there is a Modular Refinery, Walter Smith Refinery, producing diesel in the state.

Responding, the chairman of the association of Imo State Petroleum Marketers and Dealers, Sir Dr. Chidiebere Okoroafor (Eberelinks), highlighted the challenges in the oil and gas industry, which he said, “are known, seen and felt nationwide.”

The marketers passionately appealed to the committee to intervene on their behalf, explaining the plight they are going through in accessing diesel from Walter Smith Refinery.

They further explained the attitude of the management of the refinery in not considering Imo marketers and dealers in their distribution network and chain, to register its members, especially those with requisite qualifications, to be able to buy products, particularly, diesel.

FG beefs up security at borders ahead of planned protests

The Federal Government has heightened security measures at all the country’s borders ahead of the planned nationwide protests against bad governance scheduled to start on August 1st.

The Comptroller General of Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, has issued a directive to all Zonal Heads, State Command Comptrollers, and Divisional Immigration Officers (DIOS) to intensify surveillance and vigilance across the country’s border.

According to Service spokesman, DCI Kenneth Udo, the move aims to prevent foreign elements from entering the country to participate in the protests.

The Immigration Service has temporarily suspended all leave applications and charged officers to exercise utmost professionalism and patriotism in their duties.

“The Comptroller General noted that, in keeping with the responsibility of safeguarding the nation’s gateways placed on the shoulders of the Service, officers, especially Heads of Border Commands, are tasked to rise to the occasion by ensuring that no foreign element can take advantage of the protest to destabilize the country.

“She directs temporary suspension of all leave applications and charges officers to exercise utmost professionalism and patriotism in the discharge of their duties. during and after the protest, explaining that Nigeria is the only country we have as our own.

“The CGIS assures all Nigerians of the service’s preparedness to safeguard the nation’s borders towards enhancing national security,” the statement said.

FG demands tier one airport from UK for Nigerian airlines

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, said that the Federal Government has written to the United Kingdom to allow Nigerian carriers, especially Air Peace operate at Heathrow Airport.

Speaking at the League of Airports and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) seminar in Lagos on Friday, Keyamo said Nigeria would no longer tolerate a situation where the domestic airlines are not allowed to tier-one airports overseas, which is in line with the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA).

He said failure to allow Air Peace into Heathrow may lead to Nigeria taking British Airways to other less busy airports.

He stated that in the absence of a national carrier, the government would support local airlines and give them whatever they need to survive and succeed.

“We should have flag carriers who will make us very proud and that will service our reciprocal right and the BASA that we have but they must make sure they raise the global standards and make us proud,” the minister said.

“We are working and collaborating with Nigerian carriers to ensure that they are supported. We have already written to the United Kingdom to give Nigerian carriers, especially Air Peace Heathrow Airport, which is a tier one airport, just as we have British Airways Lagos, our tier one airport. We may as well give BA Ilorin to operate to.”

“When we asked for Heathrow Airport, you’re telling us to go to a slot committee. Who does that? Air Peace I can tell you is on its way to Heathrow away from Gatwick.”

He assured that the government would look into so many agreements it has that are not working in the interest of domestic airlines.

He stressed that domestic airlines need to be supported and must show capacity to reciprocate many of the agreements.

“Air France flies to Nigeria and no Nigerian airline is flying to Paris. Lufthansa, Delta and a host of others but no Nigerian carrier is operating to Frankfurt or the US.

“South African Airline flies to Nigeria and no Nigerian carrier reciprocates. Nigerian carriers are constrained, which is why you have a high mortality rate of airlines in Nigeria. Over 150 Nigerian carriers have been extinct in the last 35 years, which is very disheartening”.

Immigration intercepts traffickers, rescues babies

The Nigerian Immigration Service, Lagos Border Patrol Command, Seme, Badagry, Lagos State, has rescued a six-month-old baby and three others, suspected to be victims of human trafficking.

The Controller of the command, Comptroller Peter Adache, who disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Badagry on Friday, said the victims were rescued when the officials intercepted a yet-to-be-identified couple suspected to be human traffickers.

Adache said the suspects were intercepted by the operatives around 1.30 p.m. on Monday, along Kankon Owode Road in Badagry.

“They were travelling to Burkina Faso, through the Republic of Benin, without any relevant documents. None of them had any travel documents when they were intercepted at Owode Border,” he said.

Adache said that during interrogation, it was revealed that one of the suspected traffickers, who is a food vendor and a citizen of Burkina Faso, lured them to travel with her to the country.

“The three ladies decided to follow her because she promised to give them a good job and salary. She called her husband, who is a citizen of the Benin Republic, and they arranged how to transport the three ladies and the child to Burkina Faso.

“The travelling expenses and feeding for the six persons were paid by the couple,” he said.

The controller said the victims would be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons to help reunite them with their families.
