Supreme Court sets Oct 22 for 16 governors suit seeking to declare EFCC illegal

The Supreme Court, yesterday, fixed Oct. 22 for the hearing of a suit filed by at least 16 state governments challenging the constitutionality of the laws establishing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and two others.

A seven-member panel of justices, led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, fixed the date after the states were joined as co-plaintiffs and leave granted for consolidation of the case in the suit originally filed by the Kogi Government through its Attorney General (AG).

The states that joined in the suit marked: SC/CV/178/2023 include Ondo, Edo, Oyo, Ogun, Nassarawa, Kebbi, Katsina, Sokoto, Jigawa, Enugu, Benue, Anambra, Plateau, Cross-River and Niger.

The 16 states said they are relying on the fact that the constitution is the supreme law and any law that is inconsistent with it is a nullity.

The plaintiffs argued that the Supreme Court, in Dr Joseph Nwobike Vs Federal Republic of Nigeria, had held that it was a UN Convention against corruption that was reduced into the EFCC Establishment Act and that in enacting this law in 2004, the provision of Section 12 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, was not followed.

They argued that, in bringing a convention into Nigerian law, the provision of Section 12 must be complied with.

According to them, the provision of the Constitution necessitated the majority of the states Houses of Assembly agreeing to bring the convention in before passing the EFCC Act and others, which was allegedly never done.

The argument of the states in their present suit, which they said had been corroborated by the Supreme Court in the previous case mentioned, is that the law, as enacted, could not be applied to states that never approved of it, in accordance with the provisions of the Nigerian constitution.

Hence, they argued that any institution so formed should be regarded as an illegal institution.

When the case was called on Tuesday, lawyers, who represented the states, made their submissions.

While the majority sought to be joined as co-plaintiffs, two of the states prayed for an order for consolidation of the case.

Kogi AGs counsel, Abdulwahab Mohammed, SAN, informed the court that there were states that indicated interest in consolidation of the case and those seeking to be joined as co-plaintiffs.

It is for this honourable court to tell us how to proceed my lord.

Out of about 15 states, there are about 13 of them that have indicated interest to be co-plaintiffs and only two want consolidation.

To make the task of the court easier, those who want to be joined as co-plaintiff should be joined and abide by the processes already filed and those who sought consolidation should be asked to file within seven days, Mohammed said.

After the lawyers submissions, Justice Abba-Aji granted their prayers.

She adjourned the matter until Oct. 22 for a hearing.

The Kogi State AG had, in the suit number: SC/CV/178/2023 sued the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) as sole defendant.

In the originating summons filed by a team of lawyers led by Prof .Musa Yakubu, SAN, the state raised six questions for determination and sought nine reliefs.

The Kogi government sought a declaration that the federal government through the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) lacked the power to issue any directive, guideline, advisory or any instrument however called for the administration and management of funds belonging to the state.

The government also sought a declaration that the EFCC, the NFIU or any agency of the federal government cannot investigate, requisition documents, invite and or arrest anyone concerning offences arising from or touching on the administration and management of funds belonging to the state.

TY Danjuma donates ultra-modern morgue to FMC Jalingo

The former Minister of Defense, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (retd.) on Thursday commissioned an ultra-modern mortuary facility he donated to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jalingo.

The state-of-the-art facility equipped with some of the best preservation technology available is aimed at addressing long-standing challenges faced by the hospital.

Speaking during the commissioning, Danjuma emphasised the importance of maintaining the facility, saying, “We don’t have a maintenance culture in this country. You have to maintain this facility to serve society better.”

He urged the hospital management to ensure the equipment remains in optimal condition for years to come.

The elder statesman revealed that his motivation to build the morgue stemmed from a personal experience. He recounted a situation where the body of his personal lawyer’s mother was poorly preserved at the hospital.

“At the point of evacuation for the burial, the corpse was not in good shape. When I heard the story, I directed my white engineer to come up with a proposal using the best equipment in the world.

Though the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the project, Danjuma expressed gratitude for its completion, noting that it would improve service delivery at the hospital.

Earlier, the Medical Director of FMC Jalingo, Dr. Aisha Adamu, expressed deep appreciation for the generous donation. She praised General Danjuma’s continuous humanitarian efforts, particularly his support of the healthcare sector.

“This facility is a game-changer for us, and we pledge to make the best use of it,” she said, promising that the hospital management would prioritise its upkeep.

Commissioner for Health, Taraba State, Bordiya Buma, commended the foresight and generosity of General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma for providing a state-of-the-art facility which he said will greatly improve how the hospital preserves dead bodies, as well as enhance medical research and training.

“With the provision of modern equipment and essential services, this facility will serve as a vital support to the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, ensuring professional mortuary services and contributing to the overall improvement of healthcare delivery in our state.

“On behalf of the entire health sector of Taraba State, we express our profound gratitude to General TY Danjuma for his steadfast support and investment in our people. His contributions have set a standard for others to follow, and we are truly blessed to have him as a champion of healthcare development in our state.”

Buma also thanked Governor Agbu Kefas, for his leadership and commitment to improving the health and well-being of our people, noting that the governor’s vision for a healthier Taraba is what drives the transformative projects, and assured the people of positive impacts in the years to come.

Ondo gov swears in six new high court judges

The Delta State Police Command has arrested two women in connection with a child-stealing syndicate, rescuing a three-day-old baby in the process.

On Independence Day, October 1, 2024, a tricycle rider, whose identity was withheld, reported suspicious activity to the police.

According to him, four women boarded his tricycle, and when two alighted at the Effurun roundabout, one handed over a newborn baby to the other two women left in the tricycle.

He overheard one of the women saying, “The balance has been paid,” instructing the others to inform her upon reaching their destination.

Sensing foul play, the tricycle rider diverted the remaining two women, later identified as Tessi Ikechukwu and Lauretta Akomen, to the Ekpan Police Station.

Police investigations revealed that Akomen, 38, had purchased the baby for ₦2 million from a traditional home in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where teenage girls are kept and impregnated by men, after which the babies are sold to individuals desperate for children.

Akomen confessed that she had been given a drug that made her appear pregnant to carry out the scheme.

She later led the police to the residence of one Gloria, who acted as an intermediary between her and the traditional home.

Both women are currently in police custody, while a manhunt for other accomplices continues.

Reacting to the incident, Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended the tricycle rider “for his vigilance and patriotic act,” urging the public to emulate him.

LG primaries: Uphold principles that brought you to power, LP faction tells Otti

Gov Otti

The Julius Abure-led National Working Committee of the Labour Party, on Thursday, alleged that Governor Alex Otti monopolised the proceeding for the election of candidates for the November 2 local government elections in Abia State.

The concern was raised in a statement issued in Abuja by the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Obiora Ifoh, titled ‘Ensuring the Integrity of Local Government Elections in Abia State.’

The warning comes barely 24 hours after the Abia faction loyal to the governor disowned the committee set by Abure to oversee the emergence of candidates to vie for each council election in the state.

The committee, headed by a former LP chairman, Ceekay Igara, also has the state secretary, Andrew Ohiagba, as a member.

While warning the governor to steer clear of the electoral process and give the party a free hand to conduct its affairs, Ifoh condemned his action, saying it was such interference that forced the Supreme Court to grant autonomy to local government administration in the first place.

According to him, local councils ought to be catalysts for grassroots development, growth, and transformation.

He said, “It is on this foundation that the Labour Party strongly condemns and expresses deep concern over how the upcoming local government elections in Abia State are being handled under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Alex Otti. We must be vigilant to ensure that the electoral process is free from interference or manipulation by those in power. We respectfully urge His Excellency, Governor Otti to lead by example and use Abia State as a beacon of democratic principles in Nigeria.

“We must state unequivocally that the Labour Party demands the freedom to organise its primaries without interference. It is essential that the party’s grassroots members in Abia State be allowed to freely choose their candidates through a transparent and democratic process.”

The group insisted that those selected to contest for positions, whether through appointments or elections, must reflect the party’s ideals of integrity, accountability, and commitment to public service.

“While we acknowledge the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Alex Otti, we cannot, in good faith, overlook the potential for abuse of power that has characterised local government elections in many states across Nigeria.

“More so, as a leader who ascended to power through the collective support of the people, we expect Otti to uphold the very principles that brought him to office. He must resist the temptation to undermine the process and instead use this election as a model for others to emulate,” the statement added.

Guber: I don’t have preferred candidate – REC

Following the call by some youths in Ondo State that the Resident Electoral Commissioner, (REC), in the state, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, be redeployed ahead of the November 16 governorship election, the REC has described the allegations raised against her as false.

Babalola stated that she does not have a preferred candidate in the oncoming poll.

She noted that she never had any clandestine meetings with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as well as the leadership of the APC.

Youths in the state, under the banner of the Ondo State Youth Vanguard, on Wednesday, during a protest to the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC), accused the REC of having affiliation with the APC and that she had been secretly meeting with Aiyedatiwa ahead of the November 16 governorship poll.

While dismissing the allegations raised in a petition submitted to the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission,(INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, by the protesting youths, the REC stated that she had only been relating with all political parties.

She said, “It is not true; I didn’t hold any clandestine meeting with the governor or any member of any political party.

“In INEC, we relate with all political parties; I have been operating open door policies to all, and I don’t have any preferred candidate for the election. I am not a member of any political party.

“In this election, we will ensure every vote counts, and I promise, there won’t be any form of bias; the election will be free, fair, and credible.”

Makinde approves conversion of LG ad-hoc workers to permanent staff

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the conversion of ad-hoc staff of the 33 local government councils in the state to permanent staff.

Makinde made this declaration while speaking at the official commissioning of the newly-built Local Government House and Staff Training School.

The event was held on Wednesday in Ibadan, the state capital.

Makinde said that the decision to convert the ad-hoc staff to permanent staff was taken to bridge the gap in the workforce at the local government level.

He added that due process for the employment must be followed effectively and perfected within four weeks.

He assured that his administration would continue to seek innovative ways to support and collaborate with local government authorities for the benefits of the citizens in order to actualise his vision for the state.

He added that the newly-built complex will provide a conducive environment for the local government staff and also enhance their productivity.

He maintained that the facilities within the State Secretariat would be renovated and transformed before the expiration of his administration in 2027.

Makinde said, “We will continue to work with the local government so that our vision at the state level can also be sold to the local government administrators. When there is synergy, we can achieve more.

“For primary school teachers, their leave bonuses were last paid in 2017. The primary schools, PHCs and other things were in a bad shape. But we have paid the primary school teachers their leave bonus for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

“So, we had to figure out a way of reducing this deficit and we won’t play games with anybody because they are our own people. We insisted that first line items must be drawn against the LG account.

“It was a home-grown way of ensuring that outstanding pension and gratuities are paid. We have paid backlogs of over N18 billion in pension and we have also paid over N15 billion gratuities to retirees.”

Shortage of burial space: UK plans to reuse old graves

Old graves could be reused under new recommendations put forward to manage the shortage of burial space in Britain.

Under the proposed changes put forward by the Law Commission, graveyards declared “full’’ during the Victorian era could also be reopened.

The commission has warned the urban areas across England and Wales of fast running out of burial space.

There have been proposed changes to allow any burial ground to reuse graves, but only following public consultation and government approval.

Safeguards would also be in place for each grave, with plots only eligible for reuse when the last person was buried at least 75 years ago.

Another separate public consultation is considering the time frames around grave reuse, and what would happen if family members objected.

Prof. Nick Hopkins, commissioner for property, family and trust law, said any change would need to be tackled in consultation with the public.

“Our proposals provide a significant opportunity to reform burial and cremation law and secure burial space for future generations

“This must be done sensitively and with wider public support,” he said.

Current legislation made it illegal to redevelop a graveyard for any reason other than to grow a place of worship.

Other publicly-run cemeteries can be redeveloped if the owner was granted an Act of Parliament.

Alex Davies-Jones, parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Ministry of Justice, said the government was supportive of the Law Commission’s work.

“We await with interest the Law Commission’s recommendations, in due course, on the most appropriate framework to provide modern, consistent regulation for burial and cremation,” she said.

Public consultation on the proposed changes is open until January 2025.

Iran resumes flights after missile attack on Israel

Iran resumed domestic and international flights on Thursday following a brief suspension caused by its missile attack on Israel, state media reported.

The Islamic Republic launched 200 missiles at Israel on Tuesday night, marking its second direct military strike on the country.

The first occurred in April and involved a combined missile and drone attack.

Flights were grounded across Iran due to security concerns, but operations resumed at 5:00 a.m. local time (0130 GMT) on Thursday.

A spokesman for Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation, Jafar Yazarloo, confirmed the decision, stating, “After ensuring favourable and safe flight conditions, airlines are allowed to carry out flight operations,” as quoted by the official IRNA news agency.

In response to the escalating tensions, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency advised European carriers to avoid Iranian airspace until at least October 31, pending further review.

Yazidi woman rescued from Gaza after decade in captivity

A Yazidi woman who was kidnapped aged 11 in Iraq by the Islamic State group and subsequently taken to Gaza has been rescued after more than a decade in captivity there, officials from Israel, the US and Iraq said.

The Yazidis are a religious minority who mostly live in Iraq and Syria. In 2014 the Islamic State group overran the Yazidi community in Sinjar in northern Iraq, massacring thousands of men, and enslaving girls and women.

The Israeli military said the now 21-year-old’s captor in Gaza had been killed during the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas, probably as a result of an air strike.

The woman, identified as Fawzia Amin Sido, then fled to another place in Gaza.

The Israeli military said Ms Sido was eventually freed during a “complex operation coordinated between Israel, the United States, and other international actors” and taken to Iraq via Israel and Jordan.

Iraqi foreign ministry official Silwan Sinjaree told Reuters that several earlier attempts to rescue her failed over the course of about four months had failed because of the security situation in Gaza.

Mr Sinjaree said Ms Silo was in good physical condition, but had been traumatised by her time in captivity and by the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Video shared by Canadian philanthropist Steve Maman showed Ms Sido reuniting with her family in Iraq.

Posting on X, Mr Maman said: “I made a promise to Fawzia the Yazidi who was hostage of Hamas in Gaza that I would bring her back home to her mother in Sinjar.

“To her it seemed surreal and impossible but not to me, my only enemy was time. Our team reunited her moments ago with her mother and family in Sinjar.”

The Islamic State group once controlled 88,000 sq km (34,000 sq miles) of territory stretching from eastern Iraq to western Syria and imposed its brutal rule on almost eight million people.

In August 2014, IS militants swept through Iraq’s north-western Sinjar region, which is the homeland of the Yazidi religious minority.

In numerous Yazidi villages, the population was rounded up. Men and boys over the age of 14 were separated from women and girls. The men were then led away and shot, while the women were abducted as the “spoils of war”.

Some of the Yazidi girls and women who later escaped from captivity described being openly sold or handed over into sexual slavery as “gifts” to IS members.

The Islamic State group is believed to have killed more than 3,000 Yazidis and captured 6,000 others in total.

The UN said IS committed genocide as well as multiple crimes against humanity and war crimes against the Yazidis.

Iraqi authorities say more than 3,500 members of the community have been rescued or freed and about 2,600 people remain missing.

UK will give sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius

The UK has announced it is giving up sovereignty of a remote but strategically important cluster of islands in the Indian Ocean after more than half a century.

The deal – reached after years of negotiations – will see the UK hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius in a historic move.

This includes the tropical atoll of Diego Garcia, used by the US government as a military base for its navy ships and long-range bomber aircraft.

The announcement, made in a joint statement by the UK and Mauritian Prime Ministers, ends decades of often fractious negotiations between the two countries.

The US-UK base will remain on Diego Garcia – a key factor enabling the deal to go forward at a time of growing geopolitical rivalries in the region between Western countries, India, and China.

UN says UK military island not suitable for stranded migrants

The deal is still subject to finalisation of a treaty, but both sides have promised to complete it as quickly as possible.

“This is a seminal moment in our relationship and a demonstration of our enduring commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes and the rule of law,” the statement from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth read.

The leaders also said they were committed “to ensure the long-term, secure and effective operation of the existing base on Diego Garcia which plays a vital role in regional and global security”.

The treaty will also “address wrongs of the past and demonstrate the commitment of both parties to support the welfare of Chagossians”.

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the benefits of the deal included closing “a potential illegal migration route”.

Dozens of Sri Lankan Tamils have been held in a fenced camp on the island for three years as complex legal battles are waged over their fate.

It is unclear what the announcement will mean for them.

The UK will provide a package of financial support to Mauritius, including annual payments and infrastructure investment.

Mauritius will also be able to begin a programme of resettlement on the Chagos Islands, but not on Diego Garcia.

There, the UK will ensure operation of the military base for “an initial period” of 99 years.

US President Joe Biden welcomed the “historic agreement”, saying it was a “clear demonstration that through diplomacy and partnership, countries can overcome long-standing historical challenges to reach peaceful and mutually beneficial outcomes”.

He said it secured the future of a key military base which “plays a vital role in national, regional, and global security.”

The Chagos islanders themselves – some in Mauritius and the Seychelles, but others living in Crawley in Sussex – do not speak with one voice on the fate of their homeland.

Some are determined to return to live on the isolated islands, some are more focused on their rights and status in the UK, while others argue that the archipelago’s status should not be resolved by outsiders.

Isabelle Charlot, speaking on BBC Radio 4’s World At One programme, said the deal brought back hopes her family could return to her father’s island “roots”.

Plans for the Mauritius government to arrange resettlement would mean a “place that we can call home – where we will be free,” she said.

But Frankie Bontemps, a second generation Chagossian in the UK, told the BBC that he felt “betrayed” and “angry” at the news because “Chagossians have never been involved” in the negotiations.

“We remain powerless and voiceless in determining our own future”, he said, and called for the full inclusion of Chagossians in drafting the treaty.

The US-UK military operate a highly-secretive base from one of the islands, Diego Garcia

In recent years, the UK has faced rising diplomatic isolation over its claim to what it refers to as the British Indian Ocean Territory, with various United Nations bodies, including its top court and general assembly, overwhelmingly siding with Mauritius and demanding the UK surrender what some have called its “last colony in Africa”.

The government of Mauritius has long argued that it was illegally forced to give the Chagos Islands away in return for its own independence from the UK in 1968.

At the time, the British government had already negotiated a secret deal with the US, agreeing to lease it the largest atoll, Diego Garcia, for use as a military base.

Britain later apologised for forcibly removing more than 1,000 islanders from the entire archipelago and promised to hand the islands to Mauritius when they were no longer needed for strategic purposes.

But until very recently, the UK insisted that Mauritius itself had no legitimate claim to the islands.

A map shows the location of the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean. South west of the islands is the island of Mauritius, with some on Africa shown to the west.

For decades, the tiny island nation of Mauritius struggled to win any serious international support on the issue.

A handful of Chagos islanders, who’d been forced to abandon their homes in the late 1960s and early 70s, repeatedly took the British government to court.

But it was only recently that international opinion began to shift.

African nations began to speak with one voice on the issue, pushing the UK hard on the issue of decolonialisation.

Then Brexit left many European nations reluctant to continue backing the UK’s stance in international forums.

The Mauritian government went on the attack, accusing the UK government of verbal threats.

And the Mauritians began to wage an increasingly sophisticated campaign – at the UN, in courts, and in the media – even landing and planting a flag on the archipelago without British authorisation.

The negotiations that brought about Thursday’s deal began under the previous UK government.

But the timing of this breakthrough reflects a growing sense of urgency in international affairs, not least regarding Ukraine, with the UK keen to remove the Chagos issue as an obstacle to winning more global support, particularly from African nations, with the prospect of a second Trump presidency looming.

A backlash from some voices in the UK can be expected, even though successive Conservative and Labour prime ministers have been working towards the same broad goal.

Tory leadership candidate Tom Tugendhat argued the deal had been “negotiated against Britain’s interest” and it was “disgraceful” that such talks had begun under the previous Conservative government.

He called it a “shameful retreat” that leaves “allies exposed”, while the former foreign secretary James Cleverly called it a “weak” deal.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said the deal will “address the wrongs against the Chagossians of the past but it looks like it will continue the crimes long into the future”.

There must be meaningful consultations with the Chagossians, Mr Baldwin said, or the UK, US and now Mauritius will be responsible for “a still-ongoing colonial crime,” Clive Baldwin, senior legal advisor at HRW said in a statement.

But there can be no doubting the historic significance of this moment.

Half a century or more after the UK relinquished control over almost all its global empire, it has finally agreed to hand over one of the very last pieces. It has done so reluctantly, perhaps, but also peacefully and legally.

The remaining British overseas territories are: Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands. There are also two sovereign base areas on Cyprus under British jurisdiction.

Following the Chagos announcement, the governor of the Falklands said the islands are safe in British hands.

“The UK’s unwavering commitment to defend UK sovereignty [of the Falklands] remains undiminished”, Alison Blake said in a statement posted to social media.

TikTok influencer ‘Mr Prada’ arrested for second degree murder

A popular TikTok creator has been charged with second degree murder in the death of a 69-year-old Louisiana therapist.

Terryon Thomas, also known as Mr Prada to his 4.3 million followers, was arrested in Dallas, Texas on Tuesday afternoon after he was allegedly seen driving a stolen car that police said belonged to William Abraham, the therapist.

Mr Abraham’s body was found wrapped in a tarp on Sunday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Police said he died from blunt force trauma to the head, describing it as a “very physical, very violent death”.

Mr Thomas, 20, has been charged with second degree murder and obstruction of justice, according to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, and is in custody in Dallas, Texas awaiting extradition to Louisiana.

“This is an ongoing investigation that will take time to gather further evidence,” Casey Hicks of the East Baton Rouge’s Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

“I hope that this arrest may bring some closure and assurance to friends and family,” she said.

Mr Abraham’s body was found in a blue tarp on the east side of US Highway 51 on Sunday, police said, adding that they later discovered his car had been missing.

Police said they later uncovered surveillance footage that purportedly identified Mr Thomas as the last person seen driving the therapist’s vehicle.

They then attempted a traffic stop on Mr Thomas, but he allegedly resisted arrest, backed up into the officers’ car and fled.

Police searched Mr Thomas’ apartment in Baton Rouge, where they allegedly found evidence of a “violent physical altercation” and “a significant amount of blood” and unspecified weapons.

They added that witnesses allegedly saw Mr Thomas dragging “an object wrapped in a blue-coloured tarp” into the therapist’s car on Saturday, 28 September, the day before Mr Abraham’s body was found.

Police said video surveillance footage also apparently showed Mr Abraham arriving earlier that day at the apartment complex where Mr Thomas lived, wearing the same clothes that his deceased body had been found in.

Police did not specify how Mr Thomas and Mr Abraham knew each other, or if Mr Thomas was a client of the therapist.

Mr Thomas is well-known on the social media app TikTok, where he posts videos for millions of mostly Gen Z followers with commentary on school, relationships and trends.

According to Mr Abraham’s obituary, the victim was a “licensed professional counsellor, motivational speaker, recording artist, author and teacher”. He was also a former Catholic priest who had regular appearances on local television in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Singapore former Minister sentenced to 12 months in prison in rare graft trial

A Singaporean former minister was sentenced on Thursday to 12 months in prison for obstruction of justice and accepting illegal gifts in the city-state’s first political graft trial for nearly half a century.

Ex-transport minister S. Iswaran, known for helping bring Formula One to the financial hub, was hit this year with 35 charges mostly related to graft in a nation often cited as one of the world’s least corrupt.

Iswaran’s sentence was more severe than the six to seven months requested by the prosecution, which High Court Justice Vincent Hoong said would have been “manifestly inadequate” given the impact of the case on public trust.

“Trust and confidence in public institutions are the bedrock of effective governance, which can all too easily be undermined by the appearance that an individual public servant has fallen below the standards of integrity and accountability,” Hoong said Thursday when he delivered the sentence.

Iswaran was convicted last week of obstruction of justice and accepting illegal gifts after prosecutors moved forward with five lesser charges only, including some related to a billionaire property tycoon.

His defence team asked for Iswaran’s jail term to commence on October 7, local media reported. The court then asked the 62-year-old to surrender himself at 4 pm (0800 GMT) at the States Court that day.

Iswaran quit in January after being formally notified of the charges, which include accepting gifts worth more than $300,000.

In a resignation letter at the time, he said he would clear his name in court. Iswaran has paid back around $295,000 in financial gain to the government and gifts including a Brompton bicycle were also seized from him, the attorney general’s office said.

The charges include obstruction of justice relating to an attempt to block Singaporean authorities from investigating a business class flight at the expense of Malaysian hotel tycoon Ong Beng Seng, one of Singapore’s richest residents.

The other four charges relate to his receipt of gifts from Ong, the managing director of Hotel Properties Limited, and a top director at a construction company Lum Kok Seng, including bottles of whiskey and golf clubs.

Local media reported that the attorney-general’s office said it would “take a decision soon” on Ong. But it did not mention Lum.

Most of the charges against Iswaran have been levelled with a rarely used criminal law under which it is an offence for public servants to accept objects of value from figures they officially work with.

Iswaran’s trial has been deemed by observers to be one of the most politically significant in the city-state’s history.

It also risks damaging the reputation of the ruling People’s Action Party before general elections expected to be held by November next year.

Court remands father for allegedly assaulting daughter

Court...gravel and hammer

An Ekiti State Magistrate Court, Ado Ekiti District has ordered the remand of a 42-year-old man, Christopher Israel, in the correctional centre in the state capital for allegedly raping his daughter.

The defendant was charged to court by the state police command on a two-count charge of rape and assault.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Olubu Apata, told the court on Wednesday that “the defendant committed the offence in Ado Ekiti on September 21”.

The prosecutor alleged that “the defendant, raped his 22-year-old daughter, who came to pay him a visit and inflicted injury on her while struggling with him.

“The offence committed contravened Sections 265 and 256 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021.”

The prosecutor urged the court to remand the defendant to a correctional centre, pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution.

The court, however, did not take the plea of the defendant.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Olubunmi Bamidele, ordered the remand of the defendant in the correctional centre, pending issuance of legal advice.

She adjourned the case till November 6 for mention.

Emirship Tussle: Court Fixes Date For Ruling On Nasarawa Palace Renovation

The Chief judge of Kano State High Court, Justice Dije Abdu Aboki, has fixed October 10, 2024 for ruling on interlocutory application seeking to restrain the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, from renovating Nassarawa mini palace where he has been staying since his return to Kano after dissolution of emirates in May.

The Kano State Government, the state Attorney General and Kano Emirate Council, through their counsel, Rilwanu Umar (SAN), had filed a motion exparte dated September 12, 2024.

The applicants are seeking an order restraining Emir Ado Bayero from renovating Nasarawa mini palace situated along State Road, Kano.

On Wednesday when the case came up for hearing, counsel for the applicants, Habib Akilu, told the court that the defendant was not represented and the substantive suit was ripe for hearing.

NEMA hands over 18,653 bags of rice to six states affected by flood

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has handed over 18,653 bags of rice to six states affected by the recent flood.

The bags of rice were donated by the Bank of Industry (BoI) and they were expected to be distributed to Imo, Benue, Plateau, Jigawa, Katsina, and Zamfara states.

The director general of NEMA, Zubaida Umar said the support from the bank would support the ongoing efforts of the Federal and State Governments in mitigating the impact of the ongoing flood and other disasters in the country

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday during the symbolic handing over of the items to beneficiary states, Umar also disclosed that 1,696 cartons of humanitarian relief aid donated by the Government of United Arab Emirates (UAE) would be handed over to ten states.

Umar said: “We are handing over 18, 653 bags of 10kg rice donated by the Bank of Industry (BOI) and the 50 tons (1,696 cartons) of humanitarian relief aid donated by the Government of United Arab Emirates (UAE) to support the ongoing efforts of the Federal and State Governments of Nigeria in mitigating the impact of the on-going flood and other disasters in the country.

“The donations of relief materials by both BOI and the Government of UAE symbolize the manifestation of deep sympathy for people severely impacted by disasters on the one hand and a long-standing bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the UAE on the other.

“The gestures further entrench the essence of multi-stakeholder and multi-national approach to disaster management in global perspective.”

Highlighting how the items would be distributed, she said: “BOI donated about 18,779 bags of 10kg rice to NEMA. The rice would be shared with six (6) States to assist internally displaced persons in IDP Camps in those States. The selection of the beneficiary States was based on the number of IDPs in the state and the urgency and severity of the needs of the affected persons.

“The States are Imo State 3,500 bags, Benue State 3,000 bags, Plateau State 1,669 bags, Jigawa State 3,000 bags, Katsina State 3,850 bags and Zamfara State 3,634 bags.”

FG to begin $750m rural electrification project November

Power grid

The Federal Government has announced that it will commence implementation of the $750m World Bank-funded rural electricity project in November.

It said the project will provide over 17.5m Nigerians with new or improved access to electricity through distributed renewable energy solutions.

The Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Abba Aliyu, disclosed this when he appeared on Channels Television’s Sunrise daily programme on Thursday.

Recall that in December 2023, the World Bank announced the approval of Nigeria Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up project, being financed by $750m International Development Association credit and would leverage over $1bn of private capital and significant parallel financing from development partners.

The financing from development partners includes $100m from the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet and $200m from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

Other development partners collaborating on the programme include the United States Agency for International Development, the German Development Agency, SEforAll, and the African Development Bank.

But 10 months after its approval, the REA MD noted that the project would begin implementation next month without stating reasons for the delay.

He explained that three million anticipated beneficiaries would be connected through the isolated mini-grid, 1.5 million Nigerians through the inter-connected mini-grip, and 12 million would be electrified using a merged grid and solar stand-alone system.

Aliyu said, “There is a new project that we are starting next month called the Distributed Renewable Energy Scale-up project which is a $750 million financed by the World Bank.”

“The target of that project is to electrify 17.5 million Nigerians, and I must say that this is one of the most ambitious projects in the world based on my understanding from India that has moved many unelectrified people to have access to electricity.

“Three million of them through the isolated mini-grid, 1.5 million Nigerians through the interconnected mini grip, 12 million would be electrified using a merged grid and solar stand-alone system.”

Aliyu further said the project is estimated to last for five years and was built on successes recorded from similar projects in the past which cost $550 million and were funded by the World Bank and the African Development Bank.

Court summons Yahaya Bello over alleged N110bn fraud

The order was sequel to an application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is seeking the arraignment of the former governor and two others, over alleged fraud to the tune of N110 billion.

In the suit marked: CR/7781/2024, Bello, Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu are been accused of spending over N110 billion of public funds to acquire several properties in Abuja and Dubai.

The suit dated September 24 but filed on September 25, by the anti-graft lawyer, Mr Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), accused the defendants of criminal breach of trust, an offence punishable under Section 312 of the Penal Code Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.

At Thursday’s proceedings, the EFCC claimed that it has not been able to serve the fresh charge on the former governor and prayed the court to issue a public summons against Bello.

In a short ruling, the court granted the request and ordered the EFCC to publish the public summons in a widely circulating newspaper.

She also ordered the EFCC to paste copies of the public summons on Bello’s last known address and in conspicuous places in court premises.

Count one of the charge read: That you, Yahaya Adoza Bello, Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu sometime in 2016 in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court agreed amongst yourselves to cause to be done an illegal act to wit: criminal breach of trust in respect of the total sum of N110,446,470,089.00 (one hundred and ten billion, four hundred and forty six million, four hundred and seventy thousand, eighty nine naira) entrusted to you.”

In count two, they were alleged to have sometime in 2023, in Abuja, whilst having dominion over the state’s treasury, dishonestly used the total sum of N950,000,000.00 (nine hundred and fifty million naira) for the acquisition of a property known as No: 35 Danube Street, Maitama District, Abuja.

In count 11, the defendants were alleged to have used over five million dirhams to acquire a property in Khalifa, Municipality, Dubai.

Count 14 read: That you Yahaya Adoza Bello, Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu sometime in 2021, in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, whilst having dominion over the state’s treasury, dishonestly sent the total sum of $570,330.00 (five hundred and seventy thousand, three hundred and thirty United State dollars) to account No. 4266644272 domiciled with TD Bank, United State of America.

Count 15 claimed that the defendants sometime in 2021, in Abuja, whilst having dominion over the state’s treasury, dishonestly sent the total sum of $556,265.00 (five hundred and fifty six thousand, two hundred and sixty five United State dollars) to account No. 4266644272 Domiciled with TD Bank, United State of America.

Meanwhile, the former governor in count 16 was alleged to have sometime between 2017 and 2018, in Abuja, had under his control the total sum of N677,848,000 (six hundred and seventy seven million, eight hundred and forty eight thousand naira) unlawfully obtained from BESPOQUE BUSINESS SOLUTION LIMITED.

In the last five months, the commission had attempted to arraign the former governor before a Federal High Court, Abuja, on an alleged money laundering charge to the tune of over N80 billion, but has not been successful.

Emefiele admitted politics influenced Naira redesign, says ex-CBN Acting Gov

A former Acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Folashodun Shonubi, has said he learnt that there were intrigues and politics in the naira redesign exercise carried out in 2022.

Shonubi, then Deputy Governor (Operations) before his appointment as Acting CBN Governor, said the former Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele, told him and others that there were intrigues and politics in the whole exercise.

Shonubi, now retired, who is the Prosecution’s third witness, made this claim in reaction to a question from Emefiele’s lawyer, Olalekan Ojo, at the resumed hearing in the trial of the ex-governor of the CBN.

Emefiele is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory FCT (FCT) on four counts bordering on disobedience to the direction of law and illegal act causing injury to the public about the naira redesign exercise.

Ojo had asked Shonubi if, as a seasoned CBN banker, he was aware of the intrigues and politics in the naira redesign exercise.

The witness said he ordinarily did not know, but learnt from Emefiele, during one of their meetings, that there were indeed intrigues and politics in the exercise.

The witness however did not say if Emefiele told them what the intrigues and politics were.

When asked if indeed there was presidential approval for the naira redesign, the witness said the defendant presented a document during one of the meetings of the CBN’s Committee of Governors (COG) containing the signature of the president.

Shonubi, however, said what the CBN under Emefiele produced after the naira redesign exercise was different from what President Bola Buhari approved.

He said the redesigned naira notes were launched by President Buhari, adding that he was not aware of a letter from the president complaining about the naira redesign.

The witness also said he did not come across any letter from either the COG or the board of the CBN protesting against or condemning the approval of the president for currency redesign.

On whether he knew all that transpired between President Buhari and Emefiele in the course of the naira redesign exercise, the witness said no.

Shonubi said he is not aware of the oral discussions between the defendant and the then-president about the naira redesign exercise.

He said it was only the defendant who was interacting with the president on the issue.

Shonubi confirmed that he was invited once by the EFCC about the case and that he made statements.

He however said the EFCC did not have a physical confrontation between him and the defendant in respect of what was contained in his statements that related to him (the defendant).

While being led in evidence by prosecuting lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, earlier, the witness said what was produced by the CBN under Emefiele as the redesigned naira notes were not the same as approved by the President.

He said the memo presented to the president for the naira redesign was solely prepared by Emefiele and sent to the president.

Prioritize your budget to meet up limited resources –Budget Commissioner tells MDAs

By Ezinne Ude…

Commissioner for Budget, Economic Planning and Statistics, Hon Ezechinyere Anyanwu has charged the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the state, to ensure their budgets are in line with the State Development Plan, so as to compliment the efforts of the government in lifting the state to higher level.

Hon. Anyanwu gave the charge during the flagg off of 2025 Budget Bilateral Discussion with MDAs, at the Ministry’s Conference room.

The Commissioner who advised the MDAs to prioritize their budget to meet up the limited resources also urged them to ensure that their budgets were done for the best interests of the state.

The 2025 bilateral discussion started with Ministries of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Special Duties as well as Labour presenting their respective budgets, to members of the budget committee.

The Commissioner made it clear that budget presentation is not a ritual, rather it varies, in the sense that the economic indicator that shapes budget is no longer the same.

“You cannot use what happened last year to measure that of this year, because things are no longer the same , we are expected to cancel some, raise some and delete some, in the spirit of trying to make sure we have the best for our people”.

The Director of budget of the Ministry, Mr Obinna Ojiaka revealed that the reason they termed 2025 budget “Zero based budgeting” was due to the fact that every budget that would be produced in 2025 must be justified, adding that only ongoing capital projects that need to be concluded in 2025 can be allowed.

He described 2025 budget as important as it will take care of issues such as: Social inclusion, which takes care of the less privileged, green environment, whereby the state government wants to achieve total green environment devoid of pollution.

Representing the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Anwuka Ifeoma of the Ministry of Special Duties, thanked the Commissioner for Budget, Economic Planning and Statistics, Hon Ezechinyere Anyanwu and members of 2025 Budget Committee for giving them chance to make their presentation and hoped that they will do justice to it.

Nigeria is winning, Uzodimma insists on Independence Day

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State on Tuesday, took a holistic view of Nigeria after 64 years of attaining political independence and came to the conclusion that the country is winning.

The Governor, who spoke at the Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square Owerri during the celebration of Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary, insisted that though, the journey has come with certain challenges, Nigerians cannot deny the positive sides since October 1,1960 that the colonial masters handed over the reins of power to the indigenes.

He noted that both in the field of sports, education, healthcare, global impact, military prowess, skill acquisition, arts, science and technology among others, Nigeria has recorded commendable gains.

Governor Uzodimma commended the spirit of resilience in Nigerians that has brought the country thus far, and advised the citizens not to despair in their belief in an envisaged great Nation called Nigeria by the founding fathers.

He noted that Nigeria enjoys the respect of other countries in the world because, she is making appreciable and steady progress in the face of difficulties.

The Independence Day Anniversary was celebrated with pomp and ceremony, as the military, police, paramilitary agencies, schools and other groups showed outstanding performance in march past with the Governor taking the salute.

Governor Uzodimma had earlier inspected the Guard of Honour before retiring to take the salute during the march past.

He also cut the Independence Day Anniversary cake and performed the symbolic release of the pigeons that signals peace in the country.

Governor Uzodimma’s speech read in full:
“Sixty-four years ago, on 1st October 1960, the green-white-green flag was raised for the first time, marking the birth of our great nation, Nigeria. Today, as we celebrate another anniversary of this milestone, I feel very proud of our progress as an independent nation.

“Despite our numerous challenges, our country enjoys the respect of other members of the community of nations. I am equally proud of the individual achievements which our citizens have continued to record in the global space in various fields of endeavour, including academia, business, sports, the arts, science, and technology.

“The icing on the cake came recently with the brilliant outing of world-class Nigerian athletes at the recent Paralympic Games in Paris. I also feel very proud of the industrious and promising young Imo boys and girls who have acquired cutting-edge digital skills from our Skill Up Imo Project and are today waxing strong in the new technology-driven global employment market.

“That is the spirit of Nigerians innovative, resilient, and ever-tenacious. That spirit is part of what we are celebrating today. Indeed, Nigeria is winning, and we have so much to celebrate.

“So, I welcome you all to this year’s Independence anniversary celebrations with profound gratitude to God. His benevolence has sustained us through six decades of self-governance, allowing us to take our destiny into our own hands. While our journey has faced challenges, we owe immense gratitude to God for the progress we have made. Thus, I congratulate all Nigerians, especially the resilient people of Imo State, on this joyous occasion.

“The story of our nation, like that of many others who fought for independence, is one of unwavering determination. As a country that endured a civil war in its early years, the urgency of nation-building is even more pronounced. Yes, we have faced obstacles that tested our unity; yes, we have not built that perfect nation that we all hoped for at independence, but we have made remarkable progress, which gives us more than enough reason to celebrate. As Johnson Oatman wrote in one of my favourite hymns, Count your blessings, name them one by one, it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

So let us attempt to count our blessings:

“1. Education: From just two universities at Independence, we can now boast of over 270 universities and countless other tertiary institutions that are nurturing the bright minds that will shape our future.
“2. Healthcare: Our citizens now live longer and enjoy better health, thanks to expanded access to healthcare and improved health facilities.
“3. Sports: We have conquered the world stage and raised our flag with pride on many occasions.
“4. Global Impact: Our nationals continue to make significant contributions to global advancements in science, technology, innovation, and creativity. Nigerian scholars have continued to shine across the globe, embodying excellence and innovation.
“5. Military Prowess: Our armed forces not only secure our borders but also contribute to global peacekeeping efforts, earning international respect and admiration.

“I can go and on, but let me stop at this point.

“Here in Imo State, we have recorded transformative progress in infrastructure, education, and economic development. Our state institutions are training graduates who are equipped and ready to compete on the global stage. Our infrastructure, especially the roads, is improving steadily, thereby enabling us to connect more communities and stimulate commerce in and around the state. These achievements reflect the larger Nigerian success story.

“My beloved Ndimo, I recount these accomplishments not to ignore our challenges but to remind us of the glorious country we are building. While recent years have been economically challenging, when we consider the full picture, we can confidently say: that Nigeria is winning.

“Winning, in this sense, does not mean the race is over. We still face hurdles in security, economic stability, and national unity. But be assured that my administration will continue working harmoniously with the federal government to address these issues. We are implementing several well-thought-out policies aimed at boosting our economy, improving our security, and fostering unity among all Nigerians.

“On this historic day, I would like to renew my commitment to transparent and accountable governance to you, my fellow indigenes and residents. Our 3R administration will continue to give priority to the development of infrastructure development, economic growth, and social welfare. But this can only be possible with everyone’s support and cooperation. We must give peace a chance to enable us to deepen our democracy and accelerate our development.

“As we reflect on this Independence Day, I hereby repeat my invitation to all Imo people and Nigerians to join hands and contribute to making Nigeria the country of our dreams. I am talking of that country which our forebears from different corners of the country with different tongues had in mind when they fought for our freedom and independence. It is not enough to identify problems; we must actively participate in seeking solutions. We must, therefore, emulate the patriotism of our founding fathers, who made a lot of sacrifices for our freedom.

“Remember, this is our home. While some may be tempted to seek opportunities elsewhere, there is no place like Nigeria. As an immigrant, you are tolerated and restricted, but at home, you are beloved, entitled, and free. Here, we have the freedom to shape our destiny, to innovate, and to lead. Our diversity is our strength and our resilience, our sustenance.

“To the youth of Nigeria, you are our greatest asset. Your energy, creativity, and determination are the fuel that will drive our nation forward. I urge you, therefore, to take the opportunities before you, challenge the status quo, and take charge of building the Nigeria of our dreams.

“As we step into our 64th year of independence, let us do so with renewed hope and unwavering faith in our nation. Nigeria is winning, and with each passing day, with every individual effort, we inch closer to greatness.

“On this glorious occasion, I congratulate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our past leaders, and all Nigerians whose belief in our country has kept us united. Let us keep the flag flying high.

“Finally, like all nations of the world,  Nigeria is a work in progress, and despite the worries and challenges of today, I remain optimistic that better days will come, and like we say when we pray, our future will be better than our past.

“God bless Imo State!
God bless Nigeria!
God bless Nigerians!

“Thank you, and happy Independence anniversary.”

Thereafter, Governor Uzodimma treated the guests to a sumptuous Independence Day Anniversary lunch at the Banquet hall of the Government House Owerri.

Those who have made life miserable for our people deliberately, the looters, the corrupt cabals, both in the oil sector or whatever sector they may be.

Our independence starts now, because the independence we got in 1960, they struggled for it, we are struggling for a new independence and it is part of the continuation of what we started in 2019 with Revolution Now because we believe that only revolution can save this country, he said when asked by newsmen the reasons for the fresh protest.

I didn’t steal money as Governor, Im ready to swear with quran –El-Rufai

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has again refuted claims of embezzling the state funds during his eight-year tenure.

It would be recalled that the Kaduna State House of Assembly indicted El-Rufia’s administration for misappropriating over N423 billion.

The former governor and his allies have denied these allegations, claiming they are being witch-hunted by the Assembly and the state government.

While featuring on the Hausa program aired on Freedom Radio station in Kaduna yesterday morning, El-Rufai said he joined politics solely to serve the people, not to seek money or steal public funds.

He emphasized that he was content with what he had before becoming governor, yet was accused of financial misappropriation without any specific area.

El-Rufai stated that he was prepared to swear with the Quran whenever former state governors and current leaders swore that they never misappropriated public funds.

The ex-governor also noted that after his studies, he will return to politics by 2027 because “there is no retirement in politics like government work, We will return and continue with politics, God willing”

He added, “I was quiet to see how things would turn out, but for me, I always ask God to help me in whatever I do in life because, as a human being, I always try not to do anything wrong or betray the peoples trust.

“I always say that whenever the former governors of Kaduna State and other leaders decide to take an oath swearing with the Quran that they never took peoples money, I’m also ready to swear. This is because I know that I didn’t go into public service to steal or take peoples money. I joined politics only to serve the people of Kaduna State; I didn’t come to look for money, because I give glory to God that I’m content with what I had even before becoming governor. Yet, we were accused of misappropriation of funds during our tenure without being given a specific area where the money went missing or who took it.

“Yet they are going after my allies by inviting them to the ICPC and EFCC with the intention of tarnishing their names. As for me, I had already prayed two Rakaat on Friday night, leaving everything to God, seeking His judgment. This is why I’m not saying much about the issue.

“But its surprising and painful what is happening; such is life. What I would like to say here is that whatever evil plans, witch-hunts, and lies against us should continue because we have reported the issue to God, and God willing, we will get justice from Him.

“If you report something to God, you must desist from making comments. Although I have ordered my lawyers to sue in court against attempts to tarnish my name, that will continue. But presently, I’m doing fine by going about my normal activities such as reading and writing.

“You can still continue working for the people even after government, and that is what we are doing right now. We are still working alongside those who cherish serving the people, not those who enter politics or governance to siphon public funds to add to their wealth. That is not our intention. God knows that, and the people with positive minds know that too. May God bring development to our people”, he concluded.

Independence Day: Jonathan lists conditions for nigeria to achieve growth

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has hailed citizens and leaders of Nigeria as the country marks her 64th anniversary.

Goodluck Jonathan said Nigeria has made progress in different sectors that should be celebrated.

In his Independence Day message yesterday, he stated, “Today, we mark a significant milestone in our nations history. It is the 64th Anniversary of Nigeria’s independence when we remember and adore our nationalists who fought and brought an end to colonial rule.

“Since 1960, we have come a long way, making measured strides in various sectors and overcoming countless obstacles, in our journey of nationhood.

“Over time, we have indeed made modest progress in our hopes and shared dreams as citizens of our nation. We have had sustained democracy in this 4th Republic for 25 years, after seeing the end of military rule in 1999.

“We have recorded perceptible growth in our economy and our gross domestic products (GDP). We have continued to sustain our unity and belief in the social fabric of our nation.

The former president explained that for the country to reach its full potential, institutions must be strengthened. He also identified the need for peaceful, free, fair and transparent elections.

He called on Nigerians to commit to the principles of justice, equity and inclusion. He noted that leaders must harness the countrys diversity and tap into the youths potential.

“However, we still face significant challenges that test our resolve and resilience as a people. These border on our inability to meet our goals and expectations on security, economic growth, national cohesion and general infrastructure development.

“For us to deepen the roots of our democracy and foster inclusive economic growth, we must strengthen our institutions and develop a good democratic culture that will support peaceful, transparent, free and fair elections. This is the basis for good governance, sustainable democracy, national unity and peaceful coexistence.

“As a nation, we must recommit to the principles of justice, equity and inclusion. We must harness our diversity, tap into our youths potential, and leverage our natural resources for the benefit of all.

“As we mark this important day, I encourage Nigerians to remain optimistic, resilient, and committed to our nations greatness, despite the odds. With a common purpose, zeal and love for one another, we can overcome our challenges and build a prosperous nation of our collective dreams, where every citizen has equal opportunities to thrive”, Former President Jonathan added.

Family seeks help as mentally-challenged father goes missing

The family members of Elijah Bassey are seeking public assistance to help locate their father, who is mentally challenged and has gone missing in the Ajuwon community of Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State.

It was learnt on Monday that Bassey went missing in August 2024 after his elder brother, identified only as Ekpo, left to get him food at the house where he was staying.

Samuel, the missing mans son, told our correspondent on Monday that they had searched the entire community and even reported the incident to the Zone 2 Police Command to locate his whereabouts.

He said, My dad was dealing with mental health issues and was taken from Ajuwon to our village in Akwa Ibom. A few weeks later, a family member travelled to the town to bring him back.

When he returned, our uncle, with whom he was staying, said he went out to buy food, but by the time he came back, our father was nowhere to be found. Weve reported the matter to the police.

During a phone interview with our correspondent on Monday, Basseys daughter, Rebecca, recounted a similar incident and appealed to kind-hearted Nigerians for assistance in locating their father.

She said, My father wasnt feeling well, and we were advised to take him to our village in Akwa Ibom for proper care. One of his brothers there assured us that he would look after him.

We travelled to the village, but after a few days, a family member went there to bring him back to Lagos.

I live in Ilorin with my husband, but when I heard my father had been brought back to Lagos, I travelled there. Upon arriving, I was shocked to learn that he had gone missing just a few days after his return. I am pleading with Nigerians to help us find him.

Inspector Olanrewaju Isaac from the Zone 2 Police Command, who said he had been assisting the family in the search for their missing father, told our correspondent that the family was eager to find him to confirm his well-being.

No one has been implicated. The family wants to determine whether the man is alive and to discover his whereabouts.

The case was initially reported at the Ajuwon Police Station before being escalated to Zone 2 for further investigation. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to approach the nearest police station, he said.

Lawyer killed in crash after depositing mother’s remains in morgue

A lawyer, simply identified as Okechukwu, was killed in a tragic road crash that occurred along the Awka area of the Awka-Enugu Expressway in Anambra State on Sunday night.

Our correspondent gathered that the lawyer died after his vehicle hit an abandoned articulated truck on the road and somersaulted into a nearby drainage.

A kinsman of the victim who identified him said the deceased had just deposited the remains of his late mother at the mortuary before the incident happened.

The kinsman, who pleaded anonymity, said, The incident happened along the expressway along the Awka area. The deceased thought the truck was moving, but when he realised it wasnt moving, it was too late as he hit it, and his car veered into the gutter.

The lawyer had recently welcomed a newborn with his wife, whom he married in February. His sudden demise has left his loved ones in shock.

“He had just put his late mother in the mortuary and was preparing for the funeral. Now, he’s joined her in the mortuary. The incident serves as a stark reminder of life’s unpredictability and the importance of cherishing every moment”

It was an avoidable death caused by allowing abandoned vehicles to stay on the road longer than necessary. The stationary vehicle was at a dangerous position on the road thereby posing a danger to other road users”

It was gathered that the victims remains had been deposited at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, morgue after he was confirmed dead.

Other residents have criticised traffic officials including the Federal Road Safety Corps for allegedly allowing the abandoned truck to remain on the road longer than necessary without taking action to tow it away.

But reacting to the development, the Corps Commander, FRSC, Anambra State Command, Joyce Alexander, commiserated with the family members of the victim, praying God to comfort all of them and take care of the family he left behind.

Alexander said the abandoned truck could not be towed because of the load it was carrying, adding that she had directed the FRSC personnel to cordon off the scene with reflective tape.

She said, “I am aware that he ran into a broken-down stationary truck. Unfortunately, this happened in the night and the FRSC rescue team that went for the rescue operation could not ascertain from any eyewitness what really happened.

“It was not a tyre burst, as no tyre burst was observed. The only likely explanation is excessive speed which might have led to loss of control. We arrived at this conclusion because of the skid marks and yeo marks trailing on the crash scene.

“I have also visited the scene to confirm the marks and the apparent struggle with the steering before the vehicle eventually tumbled. I will like to point out here that the FRSC is not, and cannot be at every place.

“And that’s why we solicit the collaboration and assistance of so many groups and individuals, the media inclusive. That is also why we have the FRSC toll-free emergency number: 122.

“We rely on every member of society to alert us on crashes and obstructions.”

He noted that because the truck could not be towed due to the load it was carrying, he had directed his staff to cordon off the scene with reflective tapes to warn oncoming traffic in the night, pending when the truck could be offloaded and towed in the morning.

NLC to workers: Don’t give up on Nigeria

NLC President

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged downtrodden Nigerians who bear the marks or burden of broken promises, exploitation and corruption not to give up hope on their country.

President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero said this in a statement to workers and Nigerians on independence day on Monday.

The statement reads: On the occasion of Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary celebration, we congratulate all Nigerians, especially workers for their sacrifice, resilience or robust spirit in spite of serial acts of betrayal of monumental proportions by the political leadership at various times and levels.

We urge the downtrodden Nigerians who bear the marks or burden of these broken promises, exploitation and corruption to not give up hope on their country.

In light of the fact that their sacrifice has been taken for granted for so long, they should learn to protest within the limits of the law against injustices and subversion of democratic norms, culture and values by the dominant political elite.

It should be apparent to the citizenry that the leading political elite are not ready to do the right thing except they are compelled to do so.

In the same vein, we would like to sound a note of caution to our political elite whose pre-occupation is to circumvent the principles and practice of popular democracy that undermining our democratic institutions can no longer be business as usual.

The consequences of their acts of commission or omission brought us this far. It is time to turn a new leaf. Let it be the beginning of a new low.

Bobrisky: You remain suspended, NCoS tells suspended officers

The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has officially confirmed the suspension of several senior officers, including Deputy Comptroller of Corrections (DCC) Michael Anugwa, over allegations of ethical violations related to the custody of crossdresser Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, at the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Centre in Lagos.

This affirmation came after DCC Anugwa contested claims of his suspension during a parliamentary inquiry held in Abuja on Monday.

Anugwa insisted he had not been suspended, contradicting the directive from the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In response, NCoS spokesperson, ACC Abubakar Umar released a statement on Monday night clarifying the situation.

According to Umar, the suspension, which was implemented on September 26, 2024, had been properly communicated to the officers involved.

He said, The attention of the Nigerian Correctional Service has been drawn to a trending video of one of its senior officers purporting that the Service has not served him a letter of suspension as earlier directed by the Civil Defence, Correctional Fire, and Immigration Services Board CDCFIB.

The Service views this as an act of gross misconduct aimed at misleading the public on the issue at hand.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Nigerian Correctional Service suspended not only the said officer in the video, but three other officers following their alleged roles in various misconducts so as to allow for further investigation.

The suspended officers are the officer-in-charge of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Sikiru Adekunle; the officer-in-charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Michael Anugwa; the officer-in-charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, FCT command, DCC Kevin Ikechukwu Iloafonsi; and Assistant Superintendent of Corrections (ASC II) Ogbule Samuel Obinna of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abakiliki, Ebonyi state.

Recall that two letters were issued by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services board (CDCFIB) with reference nos: CDCFIB/NCOS/DISP/016/VOL.II/16 and CDCFIB/NCOS/DISP/016/VOL.II/17 both dated 26th September, 2024, suspending the aforementioned officers.

The suspension which took effect from the 26th of September, 2024, was conveyed to the various officers accordingly.

The public is advised to remain resolute as the Service would ensure that thorough investigation would be carried out and any person or group of persons found culpable would be punished in line with the Public Service Rules as well as other extant laws.

EFCC drags former governor to Court

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday arraigned former governor of Taraba State, Darius Dickson Ishaku and former permanent secretary, Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in the state, Bello Yero, before Justice S. C. Oriji of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, Abuja for fraud.

The reports said that the duo are being prosecuted on a 15-count charge, bordering on criminal breach of trust, conspiracy and conversion of public funds in the state to the tune of N27,000,000,000.00 (Twenty Seven Billion Naira).

One of the charges reads: That you Darius Dickson Ishaku whilst being the governor of Taraba State and Bello Yero whilst being the Permanent Secretary, Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Taraba State between July, 2015 and May, 2019 in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, and in such capacity entrusted with dominion over certain property, to wit: an aggregate sum of N1,138,082,097.71 (One Billion, One Hundred and Thirty-Eight Million, Eighty-Two Thousand, Ninety- Seven Naira, Seventy-One Kobo), which sum formed part of the 2.5% contingency fund belonging to Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Taraba State committed criminal breach of trust in respect of the said property, when you dishonestly diverted the said sum to your own use and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 315 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 532, Laws of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria 2007 and punishable under the same section.

Another reads: That you Darius Dickson Ishaku whilst being the governor of Taraba State and Bello Yero, whilst being the Permanent Secretary, Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Taraba State between July, 2015 and May, 2019 in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, dishonestly misappropriated certain property, to wit: an aggregate sum of N1,138,082,097.71 (One Billion, One Hundred and Thirty-Eight Million, Eighty-Two Thousand, Ninety-Seven Naira, Seventy-One Kobo, which sum formed part of the 2.5% contingency fund belonging to Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Taraba State and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 308 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 532, Laws of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria 2007 and punishable under Section 309 of the same Act.

They pled not guilty when all the charges were read to them, prompting prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN to ask the court for a trial date as well as accelerated hearing on the matter, while Paul Haris Ogbole, SAN and Oluwa Damilola Kayode, counsel to Ishaku and Yero respectively made oral bail applications which Jacobs opposed, insisting on formal applications.

Justice Oriji, adjourned the matter till Thursday, October 3, for hearing on bail applications and ordered that the defendants be remanded in EFCCs custody. Both defendants were arrested on September 27, 2024.

Bribe: Why we dropped money laundering charge against Bobrisky –EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied receiving a bribe to drop the money laundering charge against controversial crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky.

The EFCC, on Monday, explained that the allegations of money laundering were dropped based on Bobrisky’s confessional statement on naira abuse in court and the disclosure of the Special Control Unit against Money Laundering, SCUML, that Okunenye’s firm, Bob Express, was not a Designated Non Financial Institution, Business and Profession, DNFIBP, and could not be prosecuted for flouting provisions of the Money Laundering Prevention & Prohibition Act, 2022.

The representative of the anti-graf agency, Bilikisu Bala, head of the prosecution team that handled the trial of Bobrisky, who made the clarification during an appearance before the House of Representatives investigative committee probing the alleged case of ₦15 million bribery involving Bobrisky and the EFCC, added that it is well within the powers of the agency to amend charges.

Bala denied any insinuation that the EFCC or any of its operatives received a bribe to drop the charges against Bobrisky.

“We initially raised six count charges bordering on Naira Abuse and Money Laundering against Okuneye based on his confessional statement that his firm, Bob Express, was not registered with SCUML and was not rendering returns to it. Counts 1-4 were on Naira Abuse while counts five and six were on money laundering”

“Okunenye’s confession that he didn’t register his firm, Bob Express with SCUML and not rendering returns to it informed the money laundering charges initially included in the six count charges. However, when we wrote to SCUML on the status of the firm, the Unit responded that it was not a Designated Non-Financial Institution, Business and Profession, DNFIBP. We cannot lawfully sustain the charges in all sincerity. We, therefore dropped them and relied on the four counts on Naira mutilation to which Okuneye had pleaded guilty”, she said.

The prosecutor dismissed claims of financial inducement in dropping charges maintaining that no such thing happened.

“There is simply no basis for that. The Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, allows amendment of charges. It is a professional practice. It is laughable for anyone to attribute our decision to monetary issues. Why did we write to SCUML if we didn’t want to include the charges? We wrote to be lawfully guided and when the Unit responded that the firm had not breached any law, on what basis should we have retained the money laundering charges?”, she said.

The Chairman of the Committee, Ginger Onwusibe, however, said that at the next meeting, the person who did the audio recording on the alleged bribery should appear before the committee while the meeting was adjourned sine die.

Meanwhile, the lawyer to Bobrisky, Avwerosuoghene Omuvwie, told the investigative committee that his client couldn’t appear physically due to health issues.

Independence Day: Police fire teargas at protesters in Abuja

Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force yesterday fired teargas canisters at Nigerian youth protesting against the high cost of living in the country.

The reports said that the protesters had assembled near the popular Berger roundabout at about 7 am marching towards the Eagles Square.

However, in an effort to disperse the protesters, the operatives of the NPF resorted to the use of force.

The protesters are calling on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to immediately address the hunger and other economic crises in the nation.

Meanwhile, Tinubu had in his nationwide broadcast to mark the Independence Day anniversary, assured Nigerians that his administration was implementing many measures to reduce the cost of living.

Naira-for-crude deal begins Tuesday –Tinubu panel

The Technical Sub-Committee on Domestic Sales of Crude Oil in Local Currency, on Sunday, confirmed that the supply of crude in naira by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is to begin on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

On September 13, 2024, the committee announced that the Federal Executive Council under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu approved the sale of crude to local refineries in naira and the corresponding purchase of petroleum products in naira.

From October 1, NNPC will commence the supply of about 385kbpd (385,000 barrels per day) of crude oil to the Dangote refinery to be paid for in naira, the committee had declared.

The Chairman of the Technical Sub-Committee is Zacch Adedeji, who doubles as Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

When contacted on Sunday and asked if the plan for the crude oil supply to the $20bn Lekki-based plant is still intact, the Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, Mr Dare Adekanmbi, responded in the affirmative.

He said, I can confirm to you that the Chairman, Sub-Technical Committee, Zacch Adedeji, is working day and night to ensure that things go according to plans. He knows how important it is to have the agreement implemented as has been planned for the benefit of Nigerians.

This implies that NNPC is to supply about 11.5 million barrels of crude oil to the Dantote refinery monthly, and based on the deal, the plant will release equivalent volumes of refined diesel and petrol to the domestic market also in naira.

The panel explained in September that this initiative would help reduce pressure on the naira, eliminate unnecessary transaction costs, and improve the availability of petroleum products across the country.

Since then, the implementation committee chaired by the Minister of Finance and we, the technical committee, have worked intensely with NNPC and Dangote refinery to fashion out the details of the modalities for the implementation of the FEC approval, Adedeji had stated.

While stating that crude would be sold to Dangote in naira from October 1, the committee chairman and FIRS boss said, In return, the Dangote refinery will supply PMS (petrol) and diesel of equivalent value to the domestic market to be paid in naira.

Diesel will be sold in naira by the Dangote refinery to any interested off-taker. PMS will only be sold to NNPC. NNPC will then sell to various marketers for now. All associated regulatory costs (NPA, NIMASA, etc.) will also be paid in naira. We are also setting up a one-stop shop that will coordinate service provision from all regulatory agencies, security agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth implementation of this initiative.

Adedeji explained that the technical committee that worked to flesh out the initiative would transition to an implementation execution and monitoring committee that would be working out of Lagos for the next three to six months.

The committee, which includes the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Mrs Lydia Jafiya; the FIRS boss, as well as representatives from NNPC, Central Bank of Nigeria, AfreximBank, and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, was set up to craft a robust template that will ensure the successful implementation of the initiative.

Meanwhile, modular refineries have called on the government to work out modalities for the supply of crude to their plants as well.

About 24 hours before the commencement deal, the modular refiners told one of our correspondents that they were not involved in the scheme of things.

The Publicity Secretary of the Crude Oil Refinery-owners Association of Nigeria, Eche Idoko, said, The committee is only discussing with Dangote at the moment.

According to Idoko, the committee, at its inaugural meeting, said it would start the naira sale of crude with refineries producing petrol, noting that at the moment, only the Dangote refinery is producing the commodity.

He said the association made a case that the committee should extend the sale to other refineries to avoid discrimination, but they havent given us any feedback.

Idoko stated, Perhaps, during the October date, they will disclose more in terms of the modus they want to adopt. But at the moment, we have not received any clear communications as to how the naira sale will be administered other than the fact that they said they will start with PMS-producing refineries.

The CORAN spokesman disclosed that many of the modular refineries have been facing serious crude challenges, preventing them from producing fuel.

He noted that some refineries with 10,000 capacity currently produce a little above 3,000 barrels per day due to the unavailability of crude oil.

A 6,000-capacity refinery now produces 1,000 barrels, but productions are off and on because of erratic crude supply, he stated.

He added, Our modular refineries are facing a serious crude crisis. Nothing has changed for modular refineries. There are talks with the government but there hasnt been any definite arrangement for supplies.

Nigerians are hopeful that the naira crude sale scheduled to start on October 1 will bring down the price of petrol.

Since it commenced the sale of petroleum on September 15, the Dangote refinery has refused to announce the price of the product.

The company denied selling at N898 per litre to the NNPC, saying the claim by the NNPC was misleading and mischievous, deliberately aimed at undermining the milestone achievement recorded.

The Dangote refinery urged Nigerians to await a formal announcement from the presidential committee.

We urge Nigerians to disregard this malicious statement and await a formal announcement on the pricing, by the Technical Sub-Committee on Naira-based crude sales to local refineries, appointed by President Bola Tinubu, which will commence on October 1, 2024, bearing in mind that our current stock of crude was procured in dollars, the Dangote Group stated.

However, the Federal Government has said it would not interfere in the price controversy between the NNPC and Dangote, saying the petroleum sector had been deregulated.

Imo govt condemns re-circulation of cloned THISDAY story against Uzodimma

Imo state government has condemned the resurrection of a cloned (fake) THISDAY story against Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba regretted that those who are bent on stoking conflict between Ndigbo and the rest of the country were behind the re- circulation of the cloned newspaper publication, where it was alleged that Gov Hope Uzodimma has pledged to marry off Imo women to Fulani settlers.

He said the cloned THISDAY publication first circulated in August 2021, which was promptly disowned by the management of the newspaper.

Emelumba disclosed that the resurrection of the fake news story has been traced to the same group, raising false alarm that Imo state was hosting an IDP Camp at Nsu, Ehime Mbano local government area of the state.

He named the sponsors as those, who woefully lost the recently conducted local government election and were looking for ways to cause instability in the state.

Emelumba said it was ungodly for people, out of sheer political banditry, resurrected an issue that had been settled three years ago.

According to him, Uzodimma doesn’t even have the power to compel any lady outside his biological children to marry anyone, and he wondered where they got that satanic idea from.

He said it was ridiculous for people to peddle such a rumour again, even when they know that there is no iota of truth in it.

” Honestly, I believe Imo people are too cosmopolitan to believe such a balderdash from empty brains whose quest for power has led them to all sorts of mischief and desperation”, he submitted.

He described Uzodimma as an unrepentant democrat, who will never trample upon the human rights of any law-abiding resident of the state.

The Commissioner called on the people of Imo State to disregard any information that is intended to tarnish the image of government officials, or incite them against other Nigerians.

According to him, the resurrection of the fake news against the governor and the circulation of a video by one inconsequential Chinonso Uba, calling for insurrection against the Federal Government by Ndigbo was not a mere coincidence.

He noted that it was a deliberate action to cause instability in Imo state, leading to another wave of insecurity in the state.

Steer clear substandard drugs NAFDAC warns patent medicine dealers

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has called on patent medicine dealers to steer clear selling substandard and counterfeit drugs to Nigerians.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, gave the warning at a one-day sensitisation and awareness campaign against substandard and falsified medical products in Abuja yesterday.

Represented by the Director of Post Marketing Surveillance, Mr Bitrus Fraden, the agencys boss emphasised that substandard and counterfeit drugs are not only fake, but poisonous and hazardous to human health.

She urged patent medicine dealers to ensure they give out genuine products and qualitative services to the public.

Prof Adeyeye also urged them not to indulge in any dirty act that could implicate them, saying that the laws are there to catch-up with the culprits.

Do not engage in any sharp practices just because you are driven by money, the welfare of the people should be the driving force. Contribute your quota in sanitising the community against drugs abuse.

The focus of this meeting is how to avoid substandard and falsified medical products. Source your medical and drugs from the right sources and ensure that your suppliers meet the standard.

With positive thinking, we will serve Nigerians with products that are better by first scrutinising everything before putting them on our shelves for sale, Adeyeye said.

A Dog meat seller simply identified as Erica has absconded with his neighbours six months old baby boy.

The incident happened at Aneke Lane, Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt, City Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Sunday last week.
