Nigerian Immigration apprehends 51 suspected irregular migrants in Nasarawa

The Nigeria Immigration Service has apprehended no fewer than 51 suspected irregular migrants of Malian origin at New Nyanya, Karu Local Government of Nasarawa State.

This is contained in a statement by the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi yesterday in Abuja.

Mr. Akinlabi said that preliminary investigations conducted by the service suggested that the migrants may have been victims of Trafficking in Persons, TIP, and Smuggling of Migrants, SOM.

This, he said, was because they were found without valid travel documents or residence permits.

According to him, they were apprehended on Monday, following a credible intelligence.

The breakdown of the arrested migrants indicates 11 females and 40 males between the ages of 16 and 19.

“The arrested individuals have been taken into the custody of the service for further profiling and investigation.

“This is to determine the circumstances of their migration and any potential involvement in trafficking or smuggling networks or syndicates”, he said.

Mr. Akinlabi said that the NIS remained committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s borders were protected against illegal migration, while upholding the rights of migrants who complied with the country’s immigration laws.

He said that the Service would continue to work closely with relevant authorities and stakeholders to combat smuggling of migrants and counter trafficking in persons effectively.

The spokesperson reassured the general public of the NIS unwavering commitment to National Security and Migration Management.

He encouraged citizens to report suspicious migration activities to the nearest NIS Commands and Formations.

FGs deficit hits N12.95tr, exceeds budgeted target by 41%

The Federal Government (FG) recorded a N12.95 trillion budget deficit in 2024.

This represented a 41 percent increase from its N9.16 trillion budgeted deficit for the review period.

Details of data from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Quarterly Economic Reports for 2024 showed that the deficit increased by 0.77 percent Year-on-Year (YoY) compared to N12.85 trillion recorded in 2023.

Further breakdown of data showed that in 2024 the FG expenditure stood at N21.5 trillion, up by 12 percent YoY   from N19.19 trillion in 2023, but down by 25.2 percent from the 2024 budget of   N28.76 trillion.

However, revenue grew YoY by 34.8 percent to N8.55 trillion in 2024   from N6.34 trillion in 2023 and down by 56 percent from the 2024 budget of N19.56 trillion.

In its fourth quarter 2024 Economic Reports, the apex bank noted that FGs   expenditure   rose by 2.22 percent to N5.6 trillion on account of higher personnel cost and interest payments.

At N5.6 trillion, provisional aggregate expenditure was 2.22 per cent above the level in the preceding quarter, but was 22.09 per cent short of the quarterly target of N7.19 trillion. The rise in expenditure relative to the preceding quarter was associated with the increase in interest payments and personnel costs, which rose by 6.98 and 23.31 per cent, respectively.

Further analysis of total expenditure showed that recurrent (75.13 percent) accounted for the largest share outlay, with the remainder split between capital (17.1 percent) and transfer payments (7.77 percent).

On revenue, CBN said: FGN retained revenue rose in the review period, due to higher receipts from the federation account, non-oil excess, and FGN independent revenue. At N2.52 trillion, provisional FGN retained revenue was 10.40 per cent above the level in Q324, but was 48.57 per cent below the benchmark.

The fiscal operations of the FGN resulted in a narrower deficit in Q424. Provisional data showed that primary deficit narrowed by 22.62 per cent, relative to the level in the preceding quarter.

The overall deficit also reduced by 3.61 per cent to N3.08 trillion during the review quarter, reflecting the improved balance that resulted from a more than proportionate increase in revenue over expenditure.

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), AkwaIbom State branch, has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the management of the University ofUyo (UNIUYO) to address concerns regarding the welfare of medical lecturers in the institution.

In a communiqué released after an emergency meeting on March 31, 2025, the association warned that if the university fails to implement its demands, it will proceed on an indefinite strike without further notice.

Presenting the communiqué to journalists yesterday, the NMA Chairman, Dr. Aniekan Peter, lamented that some medical lecturers had not been migrated to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) despite approval from the UNIUYO Governing Council.

Tinubu sacks Kyari, NNPCL Board, appoints Engr Ojulari as new GCEO

President Bola Tinubu, in a sweeping reconstitution of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC, Limited board, has sacked the Group Chief Executive Officer, GCEO, Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari, and the board chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure.

President Tinubu also removed all other board members appointed with Akinyelure and Kyari in November 2023.

This was made public via a statement issued in the early hours of yesterday by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the new 11-man board has Engineer Bashir Bayo Ojulari as the Group CEO and Ahmadu Musa Kida as non-executive chairman.

The statement further stated that Adedapo Segun, who replaced Umaru Isa Ajiya as the chief financial officer last November, has been appointed to the new board by President Tinubu.

Six board members, non-executive directors, represent the country’s geopolitical zones. They are Bello Rabiu, North West; Yusuf Usman, North East; and Babs Omotowa, a former managing director of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), who represents North Central.

President Tinubu appointed Austin Avuru as a non-executive director from the South-South, David Ige as a non-executive director from the South-West, and Henry Obih as a non-executive director from the South-East.

Mrs Lydia Shehu Jafiya, permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, will represent the ministry on the new board, while Aminu Said Ahmed will represent the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

Continuing, the statement said, All the appointments are effective today, April 2.

President Tinubu, invoking the powers granted under Section 59, subsection 2 of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021, emphasized that the board restructuring is crucial for enhancing operational efficiency, restoring investor confidence, boosting local content, driving economic growth, and advancing gas commercialization and diversification.

President Tinubu also handed out an immediate action plan to the new board: to conduct a strategic portfolio review of NNPC-operated and joint venture assets to ensure alignment with value maximization objectives.

Since 2023, the Tinubu administration has implemented oil sector reforms to attract investment. Last year, NNPC reported $17 billion in new investments within the sector. The administration now envisions increasing the investment to $30 billion by 2027 and $60 billion by 2030.

The Tinubu administration targets raising oil production to two million barrels daily by 2027 and three million daily by 2030. Concurrently, the government wants gas production jacked to 8 billion cubic feet daily by 2027 and 10 billion cubic feet by 2030.

Furthermore, President Tinubu expects the new board to elevate NNPCs share of crude oil refining output to 200,000 barrels by 2027 and reach 500,000 by 2030.

The new board chairman, Ahmadu Musa Kida, is from Borno State. He is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he received a degree in civil engineering in 1984. He also obtained a postgraduate diploma in petroleum engineering from the Institut Francaise du Petrol (IFP) in Paris.

He started his career in the oil industry at Elf Petroleum Nigeria and later joined Total Exploration and Production as a trainee engineer in 1985.

Musa became Total Nigeria’s Deputy Managing Director of Deep Water Services in 2015. Last year, he became an Independent Non-Executive Director at Pan Ocean-Newcross Group.

Apart from his oil industry career, Ahmadu Musa Kida is a former basketballer and the president of the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) board.

Ojulari, the new NNPC Limited Group CEO, hails from Kwara State. Until his new appointment, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company. His renaissance recently led a consortium of indigenous energy firms in the landmark acquisition of the entire equity holding in the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), worth $2.4 billion.

Like Kida, Ojulari is also an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for Elf Aquitaine as the first Nigerian process engineer to begin a stellar career in the oil sector. From Elf, he joined Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd in 1991 as an associate production technologist.

Apart from working in Nigeria, he worked in Europe and the Middle East in different capacities as a petroleum process and production engineer, strategic planner, field developer, and asset manager. In 2015, he became the managing director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO).

During his career, he was Chairman and a member of the board of trustees of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE Nigerian Council) and a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

President Tinubu thanked the old board members for their dedicated service to NNPC Limited, particularly their efforts in rehabilitating the old Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, which enabled them to resume petroleum product production after prolonged shutdowns. He wished them well in their future endeavours.

My Sallah visit was not a campaign — Akpoti-Uduaghan refutes claims

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, has dismissed allegations that her recent visit to her hometown was a political gathering.

She clarified that her trip on Monday, April 1, 2025, was purely to celebrate Sallah with her constituents and had no political undertones.

Her response followed claims that she paid attendees to be present at the event, an assertion she described as baseless and misleading.

“This was a celebration of unity and shared love, not politics, Akpoti-Uduaghan stated.

“The people who welcomed me did so of their own free will, and I deeply appreciate their sacrifice.

“Despite a government-imposed restriction on vehicular movement, thousands of supporters trekked long distances through bush paths to receive her with a heroic welcome”

The senator, who arrived via chopper, was met with overwhelming cheers, reflecting the deep-rooted affection her people have for her. Some supporters were even attacked on their way but remained resolute in their desire to celebrate with her.

Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized that the crowd consisted of residents from the five local government areas that make up Kogi Central, representing less than three percent of her overall supporters. She noted that the turnout was a testament to her enduring influence in the region.

Beyond the celebration, the senator’s visit also highlighted her contributions to the district’s development. The very road where the people gathered to welcome her was one she had facilitated and constructed years before becoming a senator. Her tenure has been marked by a strong commitment to infrastructure, empowerment programs, and social welfare initiatives that have transformed many lives.

Expressing gratitude for the massive show of support, Akpoti-Uduaghan reassured her constituents of her dedication to their welfare.

“Your presence here today, despite the challenges, humbles me”, she said.

“It only strengthens my resolve to continue working tirelessly for the progress of our land.”

The grand reception further reaffirmed her popularity in Kogi Central, countering the narratives pushed by political detractors.

DSS arrests two key suspects in killing of 16 hunters in Edo State

Operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) have apprehended two principal suspects linked to the brutal killing of 16 Nigerians of Northern extraction in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The tragic incident occurred last week, sparking nationwide outrage and prompting swift action from security agencies.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counterterrorism expert based in the Lake Chad region, the suspects were arrested in Uromi following credible intelligence.

Makama disclosed that operatives from various security agencies are continuing to track down other key suspects involved in the heinous crime.

Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State, had earlier announced during a condolence visit to Kano State that 14 suspects had already been taken into custody and were set to be moved to Abuja for further interrogation.

The governor, who visited Kano to commiserate with the government and families of the victims, vowed that justice would be served, assuring that all those involved in the massacre would be held accountable.

In addition, Okpebholo promised that adequate compensation would be provided to the bereaved families, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to ensuring justice and support for the victims loved ones.

A statement released by the Edo State Governor’s media office on Tuesday evening confirmed that the two principal suspects arrested by the DSS have been transferred to Abuja for further interrogation and prosecution by the relevant authorities.

As investigations continue, the public is assured that all perpetrators of the gruesome act will be apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

APC ward excos reject El-Rufais SDP move

The executive members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Ungwar Sarki Ward in Kaduna have visited Senator Shehu Sani at his residence to express their grievances about being neglected by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai and vowed not to follow him to his new party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The ward exco members, who felt abandoned and ignored despite their loyalty and support to the party and El-Rufai’s government, denied rumours making the rounds that they would join El-Rufai in the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In his speech during the visit, the former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Senator Shehu Sani, warned them against being deceived into dumping the APC for the SDP.

He asked, How can El-Rufai, who didn’t help them during his eight years in office as a governor, do so now, when he is out of power and out of the ruling party?

While appealing to the ward exco members to remain in the party and work for Governor Uba Sani during the forthcoming 2027 general elections, he promised to help reach out to Governor Uba Sani to execute meaningful projects at Ungwar Sarki Ward.

Though the members informed Shehu Sani about their initial resolve to dump the APC over prolonged deprivation, after the meeting, they reversed their decision to stay and support Governor Uba Sani.

The ward chairman, Aliyu Ibrahim, lamented, saying, “We, Ungwar Sarki Ward exco members, were neglected for eight years during the days of El-Rufai as governor. It was really that bad that not even a dime was given for all our support and loyalty to the party.

“The people of Kaduna saw how El-Rufai neglected us and opted for the likes of Muyiwa Adekeye and other persons outside the state, despite all we did for APC.

“This is part of the reasons we came to visit and reassure you and the Governor about our resolve to remain in APC to ensure we work against El-Rufai come 2027.”

“I was inside my room discussing with my wife when I stepped out to urinate. As I did, I saw two armed men entering the compound. I quickly hid nearby.

“They entered my room, asked for me, and immediately shot my wife in the head. Out of fear, I ran to inform my elder brother, but when I arrived, I found his lifeless body. he had been shot too”, David narrated.

He further alleged that he saw his elder brother, the suspect, the ex-police officer, along with another armed person, leaving the compound after killing his wife and brother.

“The person I saw was my brother, the police officer. I recognised him clearly”, he said.

It was learnt that the alleged suspected killer had been in a long-standing dispute with his brothers over land ownership.

A reliable source disclosed that the suspect had been attempting to seize land from David and Richard Atideka.

“They had taken the matter to court, where the suspect was arrested and detained but later released on bail. They were due for a final court judgment this Thursday”, the source revealed.

Meanwhile, Yusuf Onilude, the son of slain Muji Onilude, said his father had just left his room moments before he was murdered.

“My father came to my room at about 2:10 a.m. We spoke for a few minutes before he left.

“When I returned, I found my father in a pool of blood. He had been shot dead”, he said.

Reacting to the incident, community representative James Yovoyan urged the police to ensure the perpetrators were brought to justice.

Chief Lorence Atideka, the family head, lamented the tragedy, calling on the government to arrest and prosecute everyone involved.

However, Henry Atideka, the son of the alleged killer, denied the accusations, claiming that unknown gunmen carried out the attack.

“My father was not around when the incident happened, and he has been invited by the police.

“Although the family had some disagreements, it was not about land but a conspiracy, which we planned to resolve this Thursday”, he said.

Henry expressed optimism that the police would uncover the truth and punish the culprits.

Ponzi operators risk 10-year jail term, ₦20m fine in new SEC law

Senator Osita Izunaso, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Capital Market.

Promoters and operators of entities engaged in a prohibited scheme are liable to a penalty of not less than ₦20 million or imprisonment for a term of 10 years or both.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Market, Senator Osita Izunaso, issued the warning on Wednesday.

Briefing journalists in Abuja, the lawmaker cautioned that the era of fraudulent investment schemes and market manipulation is over, as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will now properly regulate cryptocurrency trading.

He said that the new law assented to by President Tinubu has introduced regulatory measures aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s financial system, particularly in the cryptocurrency capital market sectors and State government funding.

“Before now, people engaged in Ponzi schemes without consequences, but the new law is designed to protect investors money. If caught, apart from paying a fine, you will go to jail. Initially, we proposed a 20-year sentence, but 10 years has been approved”, he stated.

Izunaso also explained that the new law now encourages sub national to access long-term funding through the capital market. He urged states to approach the SEC for infrastructure financing, noting that regulatory reforms have made the process more flexible.

“Every state can now approach the capital market for funding without unnecessary bottlenecks. This will drive infrastructural development across the country”, he stated.

He also addressed concerns about digital assets and cybercrime, assuring Nigerians that the new securities law will comprehensively address issues related to cryptocurrency and other digital financial instruments.

Nigerian pastor acquitted of rape after eight years in South African jail

After spending eight years in jail, a Nigerian televangelist accused of raping young women from his South African church has been found not guilty of all charges.

Timothy Omotoso had denied the 32 charges in a trial that was broadcast live and gained huge interest across the country.

In 2018, one witness told the court she had been raped by the pastor – who ran a church in the city of Port Elizabeth – when she was 14 years old.

When delivering the verdict yesterday, the judge presiding over the trial said that Mr Omotoso had been found not guilty because prosecutors had mishandled the case.

South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) shared a similar assessment, saying that “former prosecutors in the case acted improperly and the accused were not sufficiently cross-examined by the state”.

His trial was the first prominent rape case to be broadcast live in a country where sexual violence is rampant.

The hearings attracted huge interest, and raised difficult questions about victims’ rights, impartiality and whether justice is best served by having television cameras in courtrooms.

Following the verdict, Mr Omotoso will be deported to Nigeria, South African media outlet News24 reported.

Kenya failed in its duty to protect Nnamdi Kanu, says Human Rights Lawyer …Accuses Government of Violating International Laws, Enabling Abduction and Rendition

Human rights activist and legal practitioner, Christopher Chidera, has accused the Kenyan government of failing in its international obligation to protect the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, when he was abducted in June 2021 and illegally renditioned to Nigeria.

Chidera alleged that Kenya was complicit in Kanu’s abduction, torture, and unlawful transfer, violating both domestic and international laws.

In a statement, he demanded that Kenya be held accountable for its role in the ordeal of the separatist leader.

According to Chidera, Kenya disregarded its own Constitution and legal framework, including: The Kenyan Constitution (2010)  Article 29, which prohibits arbitrary detention and torture. The Kenyan Extradition Act (1968), which mandates a formal legal process for extradition. International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and other treaties requiring due process in deportation and extradition.

Kanu, a dual citizen of the United Kingdom and Nigeria, was reportedly abducted on June 19, 2021, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi, while picking up a friend. He was allegedly seized by armed operatives believed to be Kenyan and Nigerian security officials, without an enforceable warrant or judicial order.

Chidera detailed that Kanu was detained incommunicado for eight days in a secret location near the airport, where he was: Chained to the floor, beaten and subjected to degrading treatment, denied access to sanitation facilities and his medications, and tortured to the point of unconsciousness

Despite Kenya’s official denials of involvement, Chidera argued that the circumstances surrounding Kanus transfer to Nigeria on June 27, 2021, were in clear violation of Kenyan laws: No extradition request from Nigeria was processed. And No judicial proceedings took place before his handover.

The Doctrine of Specialty, which limits prosecution to offenses specified in an extradition request, was ignored.

Kenya’s failure to follow legal procedures, he said, suggests an extrajudicial operation orchestrated at the highest levels.

Beyond violating its own laws, Kenya allegedly breached multiple international treaties, including:

ICCPR (Article 13), which protects against arbitrary expulsion of legally present foreigners.

The 1984 UN Convention Against Torture, which prohibits handing individuals over to countries where they may face torture.

Chidera noted that Kanu had previously suffered ill-treatment in Nigerian detention between 2015 and 2017, making his transfer to Nigeria a clear breach of Kenya’s international obligations.

The activist concluded that Kenya’s actionsor inactionenabled a grave violation of human rights, whether through direct involvement or tacit approval by rogue officials.

This incident not only jeopardized Kanu’s rights but also damaged Kenya’s reputation as a rule-of-law state within the Commonwealth and the global community, he stated.

Chidera called on human rights bodies, legal institutions, and international organizations to investigate the case and hold Kenya accountable for its failure to protect an alien on its soil.

Reps Minority Caucus urges adequate compensation for families of Edo killing

house of reps

By Abah Sunday, Abuja

Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives yesterday joined other well-meaning Nigerians in condemning gruesome murder of 16 travelling northern hunters in Edo state, South-South Nigeria.

This was contained in an emotion laden press  statement signed by the leader of the Caucus, Hon Kingsley  Chinda,  Minority Whip, Hon. Ali Isa, Deputy minority leader, Hon. Aliyu Madaki among others which was made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday.

The statement noted, “It is with extreme shock and grief that we received the news of the barbaric murder of about 16  Nigerians, mainly northerners, by a gang of lawless anarchists in Edo State in the last couple of days, adding that they find such brutal killing of innocent Nigerians in any part of the country by lawless mobs very reprehensible.

They cautioned that and if allowed to fester without being put in check by responsible organs of the federal government, such actions pose grave threats the peace and unity of the country.

The Caucus therefore called on Nigerians never to resort to such jungle attacks on their fellow citizens but to always implore the services of lawful authorities whenever they notice any issue of concern.

“We are a nation under the rule of laws, and our law enforcement agencies are always available to partner with every Nigerian to assuage their concerns”.

Opposition lawmakers in the House, therefore  called on President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to direct the security agencies to investigate the matter and bring those involved in the killings to book in order to prevent its recurrence.

The Caucus urged all Nigerians to remain calm, peaceful, and law abiding and allow the federal and state governments to get to the root of the matter in the interest of justice.

They further expressed sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims even as they also assure them that the Minority Caucus in the green chamber would remain eternally vigilant until justice is done on the matter.

FG threatens to revoke licences for dormant oil blocks

With the Federal Government setting a production target of 2.06 million barrels per day in 2025,
the Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri yesterday, threatened to withdraw oil blocks from owners that have failed to develop them.

Sen. Lokpobiri said the government will begin implementing the “drill or drop” provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) in line with the drive to boost oil production.

As of February, 2025, oil production was reported at 1.67 million barrels per day by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC.

A statement by the Media Aide to the Minister, Nneamaka Okafor said Senator Lokpobiri stated this at a Cross Industry Group meeting held in Florence, Italy, organized by IOCs operating in Nigeria.

The meeting focused on challenges, expectations, and strategies to enhance the sector’s contributions to domestic energy needs and regional expansion across Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the Minister, “We cannot continue to have assets sitting idle for 20 to 30 years without development. If you are not utilizing an asset and it remains underdeveloped for decades, it neither adds value to your books nor to us as a country.

“We encourage industry players to explore collaborative measures such as shared resources for contiguous assets, farm-outs, and the release of underutilized assets to operators ready to invest in production. Otherwise, like any responsible government, we will take back these assets and allocate them to those willing to go to work”.

The Minister also urged operators to consider farm-out agreements where assets are close to existing infrastructure, rather than incurring high costs on new Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units.

Lokpobiri urged International Oil Companies, IOCs, in Nigeria to ramp up investment in the oil and gas industry, noting that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has provided every necessary incentive to ensure seamless and profitable operations.

Nigerians to pay more for petrol amid domestic dispute, crude price hike.

Sen. Lokpobiri explained that while IOCs have pointed to Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors as a challenge, EPCs will only commit when they see strong investment decisions from industry players.

He said: “The Government has done its part by providing the requisite and investment-friendly fiscal policies, including the President’s Executive Order incentivizing deepwater investments. Now, the ball is in the court of the IOCs and other operators to make strategic investment decisions that will drive increased production and sustainability in the sector”.

He emphasized the need for IOCs to support local refining efforts, noting that more refineries are coming on stream and will require a steady supply of crude oil.

To make this easy and possible, he stressed that ramping up production will enable Nigeria to meet both local and international obligations.

The Chairman of the Oil Producers Trade Section, OPTS, Mr. Osagie Osunbor, commended the Minister for his direct engagement with industry players and for the Federal Government’s continued efforts in advancing the sector.

“We appreciate the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for investment. The Minister’s engagement has provided critical insights and has also challenged us as industry players to step up efforts to increase production,” he stated.

The Kogi Police Command had earlier warned the senator to cancel her homecoming rally, but the lawmaker stood her ground, saying she hadn’t broken any law.

While addressing her supporters, she said, “Nobody and nothing can stop me from coming home. I’m an Ebira woman; this is my land. I’m the daughter of the late Jimoh Abdul Akpoti. I know my roots; I’m not a bastard, and I’m not afraid of anybody.”

Defying the Kogi Government’s restriction on movement ahead of her homecoming rally, the senator, in a Facebook post, called on Nigerians to hold the Senate President, whom she recently accused of sexual harassment, the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello and the incumbent governor, Usman Ododo, responsible if she and her supporters are attacked in the state.

She wrote: “My dear people of Kogi Central, I look forward to our PEACEFUL Sallah celebrations today,” she posted on Facebook earlier that morning.

“However, should we be met with or infiltrated by violence, Nigerians should hold Gov Ododo, Yahaya Bello & SP Godswill Akpabio wholly responsible.”

Senator Natasha is currently serving a six-month suspension from the Senate for alleged rule violations.

Imo: Police order investigation into killing of 18-year-old girl

The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Aboki Danjuma, has directed a thorough investigation into the tragic death of 18-year-old Kasarachi Oduoma.

Oduoma lost her life at Umuelemai Junction, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state when a struggle for control of a red Toyota Camry’s steering wheel between two police officers and a motorist resulted in a fatal accident.

In response to the incident, the Commissioner has tasked the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) with ensuring justice is served.

Following the directive, a relative of the deceased, Ikechukwu Osuji, has already provided a formal statement at the SCID office in Owerri.

Human rights activist, Chidiebube Okeoma, conveyor of the Stand for Humanity Foundation, stressed the urgency of the case, saying, “Kasarachi Oduoma was full of life, pursuing a career in fashion and decoration to support her struggling family before she was recklessly killed.”

He maintained that the deceased deserves justice, even in death, reaffirming that the foundation is committed to ensuring that her family receives the justice they deserve.

“We trust the state Commissioner of Police will act decisively in this matter,” he said.

In a similar vein, an Owerri-based lawyer, Chijioke Onwubuariri, has submitted a formal petition urging the Police Commissioner to ensure that those responsible do not evade justice.

The petition, written on behalf of the deceased’s family, provides details of the tragic incident.

It revealed that on the morning of March 27, 2025, at approximately 8:15 AM, Oduoma was standing by the roadside with two others, Eberechi Obieje and Agbim Uchechi, preparing to cross the street.

The petition, stated that suddenly, a red Toyota Camry, driven by an unidentified motorist accompanied by two police officers, veered into the area and struck Oduoma, killing her instantly.

Eyewitnesses report that the driver immediately abandoned the vehicle and fled in an unknown direction, while the accompanying police officers took the car to the local division headquarters in Umuelemai.

The victim’s father has since moved her body to a nearby mortuary.

The petition calls for an urgent and impartial investigation into the incident to establish the facts and ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law.

Etche Nation disowns ex-Rivers HoS, calls for security investigation …Accuses Nwaeke of financial misconduct and false allegations against Governor Fubara

The Etche ethnic nationality in Rivers State, the hometown of former Head of Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, has publicly disowned him, dismissing his recent allegations against Governor Siminalayi Fubara as externally influenced falsehoods.

At a press conference in Port Harcourt yesterday, Etche leaders labeled Nwaeke a liar, betrayer, and untrustworthy figure. They emphasized that due to his unstable character, he is often excluded from crucial community meetings where issues affecting the Etche people are discussed.

Dr. Nwaeke had earlier, in a press conference in Abuja, accused Governor Fubara of orchestrating the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex to prevent his impeachment. He also alleged that the governor paid his former Chief of Staff, Dr. Edison Ehie, to execute the plan.

However, Etche stakeholders dismissed these claims, stating that Nwaeke’s press conference was scripted by political sponsors in Abuja who were determined to tarnish the governor’s image.

The Etche leaders also revealed that before his controversial press briefing, Nwaeke had secretly approached the Chief of Staff of Rivers State Government House for financial assistance in exchange for his loyalty.

“His insatiable appetite for financial gain is the only explanation for his baseless allegations against the Governor. He was merely pleasing his paymasters in Abuja,” said Prince Ogbonna Nwuke, a former member of the House of Representatives, who led the group.

They further exposed how Nwaeke’s account of events conflicted with his wife’s, proving his deception and lack of credibility.

The Etche ethnic group has called on security agencies to investigate Nwaeke’s conduct and hold him accountable for allegedly peddling falsehoods against the Governor and other prominent Rivers leaders.

“This will serve as a deterrent to others who may wish to spread falsehoods for financial or political gains,” the group warned.

Meanwhile, the group also condemned the imposition of a state of emergency in Rivers State, the suspension of the Governor, Deputy Governor, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

They appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the decision, warning that it was not in the best interest of the state.

Fubara, Wike will reconcile – Prophet Samuel

The Founder and General Overseer of Shiloh Word Chapel, Prophet I.O. Samuel, has warned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to prioritize his health over politics to avoid future misfortune.

Speaking during a recent prophetic service, Prophet Samuel urged Wike to slow down in his political activities and focus on his well-being.

“The FCT Minister should take things slowly. I saw a vision where he was being honoured in Abuja, but just as he was about to receive it, two angels arrived with a stretcher and a wheelchair,” the prophet warned.

Prophet Samuel also prophesied that the ongoing political feud between Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, will eventually be resolved.

“For now, Wike and Fubara are apart, but there is something that still binds them together. People should be careful not to take sides because, in the future, I see them reuniting and working in harmony,” he predicted.

While he could not confirm whether their reconciliation would happen at the state or federal level, he advised caution, saying:

“I see Fubara and Wike secretly coming together to discuss, and God will honuor Fubara for it. But those interfering in their feud could later find themselves in trouble.”

The prophecy came amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State, with both camps locked in a fierce power struggle.

“It’s the duty of the new traditional rulers to ensure the implementation of government programmes in their communities, while ensuring that whatever that gets to their communities, including government palliatives are equitably distributed among their indigines,” the commissioner stated.

Police arrest syndicate for trafficking girls to Mauritania

Operatives at the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, have detained a syndicate for allegedly trafficking girls from Nigeria to Mauritania for prostitution and sexual exploitation.  The Zonal Public Relations Officer, ZPRO, CSP Umma Ayuba, confirmed this in a statement yesterday in Lagos.

She said the syndicate was apprehended on March 22 at the Command in the Meiran area of the state.

“Operatives of the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad (ZIRS), led by SP Francis Kpoughul, stormed their base where two suspects were apprehended,” Ayuba said.

The ZPRO stated that the suspects confessed to the crime.

“The first suspect said she was introduced to a woman based in Mauritania by another woman, who has been prosecuted for the same offence and is currently serving a jail term.

“She said the woman in Mauritania contracted her to recruit young girls below the age of 22 to be used as sex workers there.

“She added that she received ₦50,000 as commission for each girl sent to Mauritania.

“She confessed that, among the girls she recruited, was her 19-year-old daughter. She also admitted to receiving over ₦500,000 from the woman in Mauritania,” Ayuba said.

The ZPRO stated that her accomplice, the second suspect, admitted being contracted by the first suspect to recruit girls as domestic staff in Mauritania.

“She said that, upon further questioning, she discovered the girls were to be used as sex workers and decided to withdraw from the business.

“She added that the only girl she sent to the first suspect was rejected due to her age and body size. That was when she realised something was wrong,” Ayuba said.

According to the ZPRO, the investigation is ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon completion.

You only have four years, focus on governance not political wars – Group tells Aiyedatiwa

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has been urged to focus on governance and the development of the state, rather than engaging in political battles in order not to allow room for distractions.

A group known as the Ondo South Youths Forum, OSYF, which gave the admonition, disclosed that Aiyedatiwa only has four years to rule the state, hence the need to impact more on legacy projects.

While frowning at the action of some of the appointees of the governor, particularly the members of his cabinet, the group in a statement maintained that the aides are getting involved in political battles at the expense of the state.

The coordinator of OSYF, Kingsley Omogbehin, advised Aiyedatiwa’s aides against dragging the governor into unnecessary political battles, particularly with some prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Dear Mr Governor, it is time to hit the ground running and distance yourself from distractions. You only have four years, and your impact on the lives of the people and your legacy projects will be what the people remember about you. We are aware of the ongoing conflict between one of Aiyedatiwa’s commissioners and a serving minister under President Bola Tinubu.

“We are warning the commissioner to fight his battle alone and not to drag the governor into it, thereby creating unnecessary enemies for him. Aiyedatiwa should forever be grateful to this particular minister for the support before and during the election, particularly during the impeachment crisis.

“This commissioner should remember that without God and such persons like the said minister, Aiyedatiwa wouldn’t have become governor, and he certainly wouldn’t have been appointed as a commissioner. Most worrisome is that some appointees of the governor are assuming the role of the state’s Commissioner for Information by constantly issuing press statements from their offices rather than focusing on their assigned roles. This is unacceptable. We are not a ‘Banana Republic”’.

“We are aware of the roles many of these aides played during the APC presidential primary in 2022, and we warn them not to bring their fake lives to Ondo State. They are nothing but bootlickers,” the group said.

Rivers emergency rule: I feel depressed – Fubara

Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State has admitted to being depressed over the situation in the state.

Fubara’s remark followed the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State.

Following the development, Fubara was suspended for six months while a Sole Administrator oversees the affairs of the state.

The political crisis in Rivers State stemmed from the face-off between Fubara and his estranged political godfather and predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Addressing some Muslim faithful who came to pay him Sallah homage at his private residence, Fubara said: “We assumed that I might feel a bit depressed because of the situation, maybe because of what we are seeing but might not understand.

“But in everything, we have decided to give glory to the Almighty God, so in this season of sharing, love, sacrifice, I want you people to know that I key into your period of festivals.

“You have said it already that our dreams and vision for this state is the society that no man should be oppressed.

“It’s a very important virtue in the cause of this struggle, please be patient and don’t allow anybody to push you into any form of provocation.

“What they want is to destroy this state, what they want is to create problem, and deny you that means of livelihood that you have here and we will not allow it.

“We will continue to operate in a peaceful manner and continue to respect every constituted authority to ensure that this state remains the envy of every other state in Nigeria.”

Three mortuary attendants escape lynching over dead man’s missing testicle in Abia

Not less than three mortuary attendants yesterday escaped lynching by irate youths over a dead man’s missing testicle at the facility located between Afoukwu and Abayi Okoroato village, along the Aba-IkotEkpene highway, in Obingwa council area of Abia State.

It was gathered that a family who had deposited their son’s remains at the facility had gone to retrieve him for burial when one of their daughters insisted that the corpse be undressed for observation before they left the mortuary.

Following the request, the corpse, which was already dressed inside the coffin, was undressed, and the testicle was found missing.

The situation allegedly angered youths of the surrounding communities who had accompanied the family to the mortuary.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the attendants attempted to flee the scene but were apprehended by the irate youths. It was a theatre of confusion as some of the youths violently attacked the mortuary. Others destroyed the buildings and other properties they could lay their hands on.

Some of the youths said,” We don’t know that this mortuary is involved in such evil business; people have been suspecting him. It is an abomination in Igbo land to sever the body part of a dead person.

“Now, we have seen what he has done and why his business is flourishing. He was operating his mortuary business in that abandoned filling station. He and his attendants will answer for their crimes.”

Some of the families who had deposited their dead ones at the mortuary came to retrieve them. A man identified as Iheanyi said he went to the mortuary to relocate the corpse of his elder brother to another mortuary for fear that it may be tampered with.

A source disclosed that police officers from the Eastern Ngwa Division, Umuobiakwa, later stormed the mortuary and arrested some of the attendants who were seized by the rampaging youths.

As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, had yet to respond to a call and text message sent to her mobile number.

Imo First Lady, Chioma Uzodimma, backbone of husband’s achievements — Chidimma Olemgbe

Mrs. Chidimma Christpina Olemgbe, wife of the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Chike Olemgbe has expressed immense happiness over what she called Imo First Lady’s exemplary way of life in motherhood practice.

Speaking while representing the wife of Imo state governor at a special Church service marking the celebration of the 2025 Mothering Sunday at the Assumpta Cathedral Church, Owerri, Mrs Chidimma Olemgbe described the Imo First Lady, Bar Dr Chioma Uzodimma as a patient, cool-headed and highly understanding woman who has supported, encouraged and stood by her husband in all situations and battles for survival.

According to Chidimma Olemgbe, what is expected of every woman and every mother is to stand strong behind her husband when the journey of life becomes tough and rough.

She expressed the view that any woman that runs away from her home in response to unexpected hardship or challenges of life is making a great mistake, adding that any mother who abandons her husband to his fate has simply taken a wrong step.

Mrs Olemgbe further, posited that the mother should always ensure that the children are not just allowed to grow in a wild manner, as according to her, any woman that is careless about the upbringing of the child would only end up producing children that would be a problem to both the home and entire society.

Chidimma Olemgbe commended Imo women, particularly,   mothers of Catholic Church extraction for contributing to the development of the state and growth of their individual homes.

The Special Church thanksgiving service was presided over by the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, Rt Rev Dr Luscious Ugorji with some members of Imo State House of Assembly in attendance.

Group petitions EFCC, ICPC to probe defence minister over alleged abuse of office

An anti-corruption advocacy group, the Young Guardians of Accountability (YGA), has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to investigate the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, over allegations of abuse of office and conflict of interest.

In a petition signed by its chairman, Adediran Raymond, YGA accused the minister of violating federal laws that prohibit public officials from engaging in private business activities. The group alleged that Mr. Badaru maintains directorships in multiple private companies despite his ministerial position, listing firms such as Talamiz Nigeria Limited, Talamiz Petroleum Nig. Ltd, and Gulfstream Logistics Limited.

“Shockingly, Mr. Abubakar continues to file annual returns for these companies, with records as recent as last year. “Most egregiously, he operates a licensed Bureau de Change (BDC) while holding a federal ministerial position, flagrantly disregarding the laws designed to prevent conflicts of interest and corruption,” the petition stated.

YGA further demanded an inquiry into whether the minister fully disclosed his business interests in his official asset declaration, arguing that his continued involvement in these companies represents a “brazen disregard for the rule of law.”

The group called for immediate action, including the suspension of the minister and possible prosecution if found guilty. “The Ministry of Defence, a cornerstone of Nigeria’s security, cannot be entrusted to an individual whose actions suggest an intention to exploit state resources for personal gain,” the petition reads.

As of press time, neither the minister nor his representatives had responded to the allegations. The EFCC and ICPC have also not issued any official statements regarding the petition

One officer killed, eight others injured in Abia auto crash

The Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps, Abia State Command Monday, confirmed the death of one officer of “Operation Crush”, the state Joint Task Force, in a lone road traffic crash that occurred on Sunday involving their vehicle at Isieke, along the Umuahia-Bende Road.

This was as the state governor, Alex Otti, mourned the dead officer, announcing that the government had taken over the treatment of the eight survivors, involving the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The FRSC Abia State Command in a press statement issued by the Corps Commander, Ngozi Ezeoma, on Monday, said eight officers sustained various degrees of injury in the crash and attributed the crash to brake failure.

The Sector Commander stated, “The fatal crash occurred Sunday night at the Isieke junction along the Umuahia-Bende Road, where the vehicle veered off the road and fell inside a ditch due to brake failure. Before the FRSC could arrive at the scene, the police had already moved the injured to the Federal Medical Center, Umuahia for treatment.

“The eight officers who were rescued are receiving medical attention at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia and the dead has been taken to the morgue,” she said, appealing to motorists to avoid excessive speed, drunk-driving and always endeavour to check the condition of their vehicles, especially their brakes, before embarking on a journey.

Otti, who sent his condolences to the leadership of the state Joint Security Command and the family of the dead officer,  said the state government had taken the surviving victims to the hospital for the best medical attention, while describing the incident as “sad and unfortunate”, regretting that life was lost.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, in a statement he issued on Monday, “Governor Otti while condoling with the joint command and the family of the deceased officer, assured them that his government would ensure that the injured ones receive the best of medical attention to ensure they recuperate as quickly as possible.”

Save contributory pensioners from poverty — APC chieftain begs Tinubu

Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to look into the plights of contributory pensioners in the country.

Oyintiloye, made the appeal while speaking with newsmen yesterday in Osogbo. The APC chieftain noted that delayed or non-payment of pensions, inadequate funding, and corruption within the pension scheme has led to hardship and financial stress for pensioners.

Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker said that since 2004, when the Federal Government enacted the Pensions Reform Act, PRA 2004, which introduced the contributory pension scheme, pensioners had not been treated fairly by, especially many previous administrations in the country. Lamenting that many pensioners many years after retirement are still unable to access their gratuity, Oyintiloye said many senior citizens are often paid between 25 and 50 per cent of their lump savings after retirement.

He expressed concerns that many civil servants who had served the government in their prime would end up being subjected to untold hardship and poverty after retirement, due to delay or non payment of retirement benefits due to them by the government.

Oyintiloye, who commended Tinubu for approving N758 billion bond in February to clear 16 years pension liabilities, said that more still needed to be done to save pensioners from poverty ravaging then after retirement leading to sickness and untimely death.

He also urged the President to work with the National Assembly in reviewing the 2004 Pensions Reform Act, to enable pensioners to withdraw all their retirement savings immediately after exiting service and also have access to free health care once they reach 65 years.

Oyintiloye said doing that would enable these retirees to take care of their needs, venture into any business of their wish, rather than live on monthly pension that may be insufficient. He said the kind of hardship many ex workers are experiencing after retirement due to poor or delay in payment of retirement benefits may impact negatively on the morale of those still in service, making them to indulge in graft.

“I want to appeal to the president to look into the plights of pensioners under the contributory pension scheme. The 2004 pension act should be reviewed to enable pensioners to live a decent life after retirement.

“Due to poor or delay in payment of retirement benefits, many retirees cannot afford a decent meal, good health care, good housing, among others after exiting service. These are the people that served the country in their prime.

“After retirement due to advance age, many of these pensioners are already suffering ailments and yet they cant avoid medication because they don’t have enough money. Even as retirees, many of these senior citizens still have many people depending on them.

“That is why I am pleading with President Bola Tinubu to intervene. He has shown that he is a leader with capacity to solve problems. His intervention will go a long way in bringing relief to these people and hope for those who are still in active service,” he said.

The Deputy Governor, however, called on the mothers to ensure their children are trained with the fear of God.

“We must inculcate moral discipline in our children, in order to gladly reap the dividends of motherhood.

“What gives a mother pride is when she has done her work well and God grants her that grace to appreciate the efforts she made towards her children, that she will be proud to say, these are my children, this is my daughter-in-law and these are my grandchildren.

“Knowing that the attitudes of our children is mostly a reflection of our attitudes as mothers, we must lean on God to guide our children to the right path of life and to ensure we enjoy our godly and unrelenting inputs in our children”, the Deputy Governor said.

Fubara, Wike’s fight about money sharing — Amaechi

A former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that the feud between the suspended governor of the oil-rich state, Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is about money sharing.

Amaechi said this in an interview with DW Africa on Saturday.

The ex-governor also said the emergency rule imposed on the state by President Bola Tinubu was unconstitutional.

He said, “The fight between the current governor of Rivers State and the FCT minister is about sharing money. If not, what is the quarrel?  Nigerians don’t dislike corruption anymore. I’ve not seen anybody on the street querying what the problem is. Can both of them speak to the public and tell us what the problem is?

“We are now denied democracy. Rivers State is the only state in the country currently not enjoying democracy. They have imposed military rule on us.

“Secondly, the president acted outside the Constitution. Section 188 states how a governor can leave office, either by death, resignation, or impeachment. It didn’t say that one day you wake up and a man called the president of Nigeria will throw you out of office, which makes democracy unstable”.

The former minister stressed that the President had a hand in Rivers situation because he wanted to wield power by ousting governors who may not support him in the 2027 general election.

“Rumours are everywhere that if any governor is not careful, the president will remove you. So the Rivers issue is about sharing money and 2027 politics.

“If the President said that the pipe that exploded was the reason why he tagged Rivers unstable and insecure by declaring a state of emergency, what about the other parts of the country where there is insecurity? Is the President saying that they should impose an emergency rule on him? They cant because he is a democratically elected President. There are insecurity issues in the North East and North West, even in the South East and South South.

“The governor has no responsibility for the blown pipes in Rivers. Security responsibility rests solely on the President. Why punish a man who did not commit any offence?

He advised the people of Rivers to resist the emergency rule imposed by the president while urging them to protest the decision.

It would be recalled that the feud between Fubara and Wike came to a climax last week during the local government elections in the state.

Before the elections, there were two court rulings in favour of and against the conduct of the elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, led by Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.).

In the build-up to the election, the two main political parties, the All Progressives Congress faction in the state led by Tony Okocha and the Peoples Democratic Party under the leadership of Aaron Chukwuemeka, had pulled out of the election, citing a lack of due process.

The two parties loyal to the FCT minister alleged that the RSIEC did not invite them for a stakeholders meeting where the election and other issues were agreed upon.

As the elections approached, Okocha, in two media engagements, expressed confidence that the election would not hold after he filed a suit restraining INEC from releasing the 2023 voters register to RSIEC.

However, the RSIEC Chairman, Enebeli, said he had since collected the state voters register from INEC, though the latter denied officially releasing the document to the state electoral umpire.

This feud led to instability in the state, prompting Tinubu to suspend Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Oduan, and all elected lawmakers of the state House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

Tinubu, who issued the declaration in a national broadcast, appointed Ibokette Ibas, a retired vice admiral, as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state in the interest of the good people of Rivers State.

For the avoidance of doubt, this declaration does not affect the judicial arm of Rivers State, which shall continue to function in accordance withitsr constitutional mandate, the president said.

National Assembly Committee on Renewable Energy applauds Otti for signing Abia State Electricity Bill into Law

By Henrietta Ashikodi

In solidarity with Abia state government, National Assembly Committee on Renewable Energy has visited Governor Alex Otti, commended him for signing the Abia State Electricity Bill into Law and creating a regulatory body for electricity generation and distribution in the State.

The Chairman, House of Representatives’ Committee on Renewable Energy, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene gave the commendation over the weekend when he led a delegation of the House of Representatives Committee on Renewable Energy to pay the Governor a working visit.

They appreciated him for signing into law, the Abia State electricity bill, adding that it will prioritized the place of renewable energy.

“You have gone ahead to put in place the Abia state Electricity Regulatory Authority, signifying that you have moved on since the National Assembly moved the issue of electricity to the concurrent list. Going forward, it is going to be a partnership,” Hon. Ogene stated.

He lauded his giant strides in areas of road infrastructure, stating that the areas he visited across the State bears testaments of the Governor’s commitment to the bettering of Abia State.

Hon. Ogene said that the enormous power challenges confronting the nation can not be over emphasized, hence, the attention being paid to renewable energy.

“The transition of Nigeria to renewable energy is a top priority to the House of Representatives, hence, it’s popularisation by the House”.

The lawmaker used the opportunity to invite Governor Alex Otti to participate and partner with the National Assembly in that regard.

“This strategic approach tends to popularize the new technology and encourage Nigerians to adopt renewable energy solutions, thereby, strengthening National energy options and security.

“The House has also taken a significant step towards promoting renewable energy sustainability by recently adopting a resolution that makes it mandatory for Government Ministries, Agencies and Departments including Institutions to transition to renewable energy sources for their power means.

“To further place renewable energy on the front burner, the Committee in conjunction with the office of the Speaker has scheduled a National Legislative Summit, between May 5th and 7th, 2025 to cast more light on the legislative and regulatory gaps in the sector.

“Specifically, the summit aims to facilitate knowledge exchange to promote dialogue among legislators, experts and stakeholders for critical Legislative priorities, Legislative frame works and global best practices.

“Our purpose is to formally brief you on the upcoming summit and extend an invitation for your participation and partnership,” Hon. Ogene noted.

Speaking, Governor Otti commended the Committee for their visit adding that the contributions he made in the past 22 months of his administration is just what the people need.

“I am also glad to hear about your good experiences here in Abia State, because, sometimes, when you are told a few things, it is not the same with when you see them with your eyes.

“For those who knew this State before now, we came determined to rewrite the story of this State. The basic issue is that we know the potentials of our people and we know that all they require is a little support from the Government.

“They don’t need you to give them money. Our people don’t believe in hand outs, they believe in the raw energy that God has given them.

“It’s just a little support; create an enabling environment, create a State where security can be guaranteed and the social Infrastructures of healthcare and education, and then of course, the hard infrastructure like roads,” Gov. Otti stated.

He hinted that power is very important to economic development, lauded the National Assembly on what it is doing in that regard. He added that in the long run renewable energy is cheaper and sustainable.

He disclosed that having signed the Abia State Electricity Bill into Law and having set up the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency, the State is now ready to boost the economy through power.

Rivers Sole Admin dismantling Fubara’s structures  PDP alleges

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has stated that the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibom Ibas (retd) is only dismantling all the governance structures put in place by the suspended Governor of the state, Siminialayi Fubara.

PDP also described the immediate past Head of Service of the state, Dr. George Nweke, as a serial betrayer, alleging that Nweke has become a tool for Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, to spread false information against Fubara and his team.

The Chairman of PDP in the state, Nname Ewor, spoke while reacting to allegations made by former Rivers HoS Dr. George Nwaeke, against Fubara, PDP and Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, Ewor condemned the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in the state and accused the Sole Administrator of dismantling governance structures put in place by Governor Fubara.

Ewor questioned the motive behind the declaration of the state of emergency, which he claimed has no basis in reality, adding that the state is not under war, or threat of war, and no occurrence of natural disaster to warrant such declaration.

He queried if the actions already carried out by the Sole Administrator could ensure restoration of peace and order, or spark more crisis?

The PDP chairman also addressed specific allegations made by Nwaeke, including claims that Governor Fubara was involved in the bombing of the House of Assembly and that he promised to work for Senator Bala Mohammed in the 2027 general election. Ewor dismissed these allegations as false and baseless.

He said: Nwaeke, highly compromised and a serial betrayer, became a ready tool in the hands of the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, to carry out a campaign of calumny, libel defamation and distortion of facts against our Governor and his team, the chairman of PDP Governors forum, Bala Mohammed, Bauchi State Governor, ljaw nation, Militants etc.

Meanwhile, a former President of the Delta State Customary Court, Justice Miakpor Emiaso (retd.), has said that President Bola Tinubu made a blunder in releasing Rivers State allocation to the Sole Administrator of the state.

He said: It is unlawful, it is unconstitutional, you cannot release funds to a sole administrator, and I mean it is very wrong.

The constitution does not conceive of a situation where you even appoint a sole administrator to run a state. Appointing a sole administrator is unconstitutional; anything the sole administrator does there is ultra vires, null, and void because there is no arrangement under the constitution for the appointment of a sole administrator to administer a state.

There is no arrangement in the constitution that permits any authority in this country to suspend an elected officer, least of all a governor, so the president suspending the governor of Rivers State is a very major threat to our democratic system.

It means that the president can suspend any governor of any state; that is not democracy, and that is not the spirit of our constitution. He has no power to suspend an elected officer.

There are so many decisions of our courts to that effect that nobody can suspend the governor. Nobody can suspend even members of the House of Assembly if they are elected. There is a process for removing them, and it is not by suspension.

By my own assessment Nwaeke is neither under any spell nor under duress. He is a career civil servant in the civil service of Rivers State, whose career span over 40 years service in the state civil service. He rose to the apex of the civil service. Therefore he knows exactly what he has done.

Mr. Nwaeke procured flight ticket from Port Harcourt to Abuja, left his house on his own, boarded his flight, landed in Abuja and headed straight to his destination to deliver and read out the script already written by his co-conspirators. The aim of the script is to discredit the Governor, make the President lose confidence in him and paint him black before the general public.

State of emergency: We will emerge stronger –Fubara to Rivers people

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reassured residents that the ongoing political crisis will ultimately make them stronger, not weaker.

He made this remark while hosting Muslim leaders from 20 Islamic groups, including the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, at his private residence in Port Harcourt as part of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

Speaking to the delegation, Fubara encouraged them and his supporters to remain steadfast and trust in Gods plan, saying, This season represents love, sharing, and sacrifice. You have come to share in our pain and have made great sacrifices through your prayers.

As Christians, we believe everything happens for a purpose, and I strongly believe this situation is guiding us toward a greater one.

Fubara admitted the crisis may be disheartening but suggested it could be guided by higher forces.

According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to justice and equality, emphasizing his vision for a society free from oppression.

He assured the Muslims that their pending requests would be addressed after the political situation stabilizes.

Urging patience and perseverance, he drew a biblical analogy saying, If God could be patient with Noah, allowing even the snail to enter the Ark, then patience remains essential in our struggle.

He warned against those inciting violence through provocative acts, urging his supporters and Rivers people to reject elements seeking to destabilize the state.

“Their goal is to create problems and deny people their livelihoods.

“We will not allow that. We will continue to operate peacefully and respect constituted authority to ensure Rivers remains a model for others in Nigeria”.

Representing the Muslim Ummah, Alhaji Nasir Awhelebe Uhor expressed unwavering support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, assuring him of their prayers and solidarity amid the ongoing political crisis.

Uhor highlighted that the majority of Muslims in Rivers State stand with Fubara because of his commitment to inclusive governance.

Unlike the previous administration, which declared Rivers a 100 percent Christian state, he praised Fubara for acknowledging the state’s Christian majority while fostering religious inclusivity.

He encouraged the governor to remain resolute, emphasizing that challenges like these are consistent with Islamic teachings, where believers are tested through wealth, power and authority.

He further urged President Bola Tinubu to reassess the emergency rule in Rivers State and reinstate Fubara’s full authority, arguing that the governor has continued to lead effectively despite the political turmoil.
