President Bola Tinubu, and a former Nigerian leader, General Yakubu Gowon, joined other West African presidents yesterday to mark the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States.
The event took place at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, where the original ECOWAS treaty was signed in 1975.
General Gowon, the last living leader among the original signers, was honoured for his important role in bringing the region together.
Presidents from Liberia, Togo, and Guinea-Bissau also attended and promised to keep working towards ECOWAS’s goals.
Some countries like Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso were not present due to political issues.
The celebration continues at Eko Hotel and Suites.
