Rivers crisis: Fubara convenes security meeting, vows to protect supporters

In response to escalating political tensions in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara convened a high-level security council meeting yesterday with heads of security agencies.

The closed-door session took place at the Government House in Port Harcourt, focusing on recent disturbances at local government secretariats and the overall security situation in the state.

Following the meeting, Governor Fubara addressed the press, outlining the discussions held with the security chiefs.
He emphasized that the primary agenda was to devise effective strategies to prevent further invasions of local government offices, ensuring the stability and continuity of governmental functions across the state.

The governor issued a stern warning to the immediate past council chairmen, advising them against nurturing any hopes of unlawfully returning to their previous positions.

He stated, It is crucial that we respect the rule of law and the democratic transitions that uphold our governance structures.

Amid these preventive measures, Governor Fubara also expressed serious concerns regarding what he described as a plot by his political adversaries to target and arrest his supporters.

He declared a personal commitment to safeguarding these individuals, asserting, Anyone attempting to make such arrests will have to confront me directly.

It was understood that this comes amidst protests in Rivers State following the expiration of the tenure of local government chairmen.

Governing Council: ASUU cant tell Tinubu those to appoint Obona-Obla

A former presidential aide, Okoi Obona-Obla, has stated that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is not in a position to dictate appointments to be made by President Bola Tinubu for the governing councils of tertiary institutions in the country.

Obona-Obla said this against the background of the latest rejection of the fresh appointments made by President Tinubu into the governing board of public universities across the country.

It would be recalled that the national president of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, had voiced disappointment regarding the composition of the newly constituted governing councils for federal universities across Nigeria.

According to Prof Osodeke, the new list of council members is dominated by retired politicians rather than experts in academia or relevant fields.

Prof Osodeke further criticized the new list as being worse than its predecessor, indicating a regression rather than progress in the appointment policies.

But in his reaction, Obono-Obla said the federal government is not obliged to appoint only technocrats into the governing councils as the Constitution is clear about those who can be appointed into such positions by the President.

The former presidential aide argued that Tinubu is at liberty to appoint individuals who meet the constitutional requirement and the outcry by ASUU is totally misplaced.

He said, My point is that appointment of the membership of the Governing Councils doesnt require the appointment of only technocrats, as suggested by ASUU.

Anybody can be appointed into the Council, as long as he fulfills the criterion spelled out in the statute, establishing the universities he has been appointed into.
It is the prerogative of Tinubu to appoint anybody of his choice into any appointment as long as he meets with the condition(s) stipulated by the law.

Section 5 (a-h) of the University of Calabar Act 2004 provides as follows:
The Council of the University shall consist of: The Pro-Chancellor;
The Vice-Chancellor;
(The Deputy Vice-Chancellors;
One person from the Ministry responsible for Education;
Nine persons representing a variety of interests and broadly representative of the whole Federation to be appointed by the President;
Four persons appointed by the Senate from among its members;
Two persons appointed by the Congregation from among its members;
One person appointed by Convocation from among its members.

Section 5 (e) of the University of Calabar Act,2004 is quite instructive.
It prescribes the method or the quality of people that should be appointed into the governing council by Tinubu.

Tinubu is required to appoint nine persons representing a variety of interests and broadly representative of the whole Federation.

No special qualification is stated and is required as long as the appointment reflects a variety of interests and broadly representative of the whole Federation.

Therefore, Tinubu has satisfied the requirements laid by the law for the appointment of members of the universities belonging to the Federal government of Nigeria.

The impression that the political class doesnt have within its fold Technocrats is misplaced.

Why Nigeria scored 71% in ICAO audit NCAA

Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has justified the reason the countrys aviation sector was rated 71.04 per cent by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, saying some inadequacies were corrected by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, and Acting Director General of NCAA, Captain Chris Najomo.

Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of the NCAA, Mr Michael Achimugu, said if those deficiencies had been left, Nigeria would have been rated 30 per cent when results were released.

Describing as mischievous comments by commentators that Keyamo and Najomo were responsible for the poor ratings, Achimugu said the Minister and NCAAs DG came into office to improve on the deteriorating infrastructures and poor remunerations of workers.

Achimugu, in a statement, said: Six months ago, we met a dilapidated industry with poor infrastructure. The security and safety issues did not start in the last six months. Had it not been for the tireless efforts of the Honourable Minister and the DGCA, what we met on the ground would not have scored 30% in the audit.

Going by what was on the ground when Keyamo and Najomo assumed office, the current score is a substantially good showing, a miracle if I must say. The narrative being pushed out is just part of the larger strategy to push out Keyamo and Najomo from office. It is the handwork of paid mercenaries who have just one task.

The ICAO auditors praised our performance during their final briefing at the NCAA. They even mentioned a scenario where they complained about an absent infrastructure but, to their pleasant surprise, it had been made available the very next day! They said that only Nigeria moves at such a pace in the face of criticism. If the ICAO experts were pleased, who are these puff puff experts trying to deceive the people?

We have actual intel about a media team being commissioned to cause continuous chaos until Keyamo is either removed or moved elsewhere because certain people want to take back ownership of the contracts they were busy allocating themselves and family members while critical infrastructure was growing dilapidated. We will resist every attempt to deceive the Nigerian people.
Keyamo did not become one of the starboys of this administration by doing nothing. He spent his first six months unbundling the rot in the system. Sadly, the rot runs so deep that six months are not enough to scratch the surface. They know this and it is why they are relentless in their fight. But the Minister and this NCAA will do everything to sanitize aviation. We are working and it is evident.
It could be recalled that for the first time in 15 years, Nigerias aviation sector failed the mandatory audit by scoring five points short of the 75 per cent benchmark.
It was, however, given the statutory 60 to 90 days lifeline to close all identified gaps by ICAO.

Supremacy War: Protests, shootings in Rivers over LG tenure extension Wikes statue at his LG headquarters pulled down by angry youths Fubara convenes security meeting, vows to protect supporters

A statue of the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, was demolished by angry youths in Obi Akpor Local Government Area amidst growing tensions over the tenure of local government chairmen.

The crisis is rooted in a dispute between the camps of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Despite a brief period of calm, the issue of local government chairmens tenure has reignited the conflict.

Governor Fubara recently issued a directive for all 23 local government area (LGA) chairmen, many of whom are loyal to Wike, to vacate their offices due to the expiration of their tenures.

However, the chairmen refused to comply, citing an extension granted by the pro-Wike faction of the Rivers House of Assembly.

The extension was allegedly due to the Fubara administrations failure to conduct local government elections.

In a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, Fubara reinforced his directive, ordering the LGA chairmen to hand over to the Heads of Administration in their respective councils.

Following the governors directive, large numbers of youths mobilized across the state, targeting LGA secretariats.

In Obi Akpor, where Wike had previously served as chairman for two terms, some youths took their protest further by demolishing a statue erected in his honour.

Amid chants of No more Wike, the protesters dismantled the statue, with one youth notably removing the hat from the statue and slamming it on the ground.

Rivers crisis: I fear nothing -Fubara dares Wike, others

Amid the political crisis in Rivers State, Governor Sim Fubara yesterday declared that he fears nothing because God is on his side.

Fubara said even though his detractors would gather and plan against him, such moves would end in futility.

The governor had been at loggerheads with his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Fubara spoke during a Sallah solidarity visit by a delegation led by the Vice President General and Chairman, Association of South-South Muslim Ummah of Nigeria, Alhaji Nasir Awhelebe Uhor, to the Government House in Port Harcourt.

He said: “It is a difficult system but one with God is with the majority. So, when you have God around, you need to fear nothing. They will plan, they will gather, but their gathering, at the end of the day, will be to your own glory.

“So, I can say boldly that God has been very faithful to us against the expectations of a lot of people. He’s been guiding us, holding us forth, and we can boldly beat our chest to say: so far, we have shown that we are a responsible government.

“We have shown that we mean well for Rivers people. We have shown that this is not just a government that merely wants to control: it is a government resolved to give everybody opportunity, a government that allows you to feel free, and operate within the laws. That is the only way we can move from where we are to a higher pedestal”

The company had initially increased its prices, citing rising costs and inflation, but the move was met with widespread criticism from consumers and regulatory authorities.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja subsequently ordered MultiChoice to revert to its old prices, pending the outcome of a full hearing on the matter.

MultiChoice has now complied with the court order, readjusting its subscription rates for both DStv and GOtv users.

Police take over Rivers LG secretariats amid tension over chairmens tenure

The Police have stationed armed operatives at the secretariats of four local government councils in Rivers State following the expiration of the tenure of LG chairmen in the state.

Our reporter said that police vans are currently positioned at the entrances of Port Harcourt City, Obio/Akpor, Ahoada East and Ogu/Bolo LGAs.

Earlier, youths in Degema and Asari/Toru LGAs occupied their respective council secretariats in protest against the extension of the tenure of the LG chairmen.

The youths were seen in viral videos on social media chanting solidarity songs in support of those Governor Siminalayi Fubara is expected to appoint to manage the local councils on a temporary basis.

The outgoing LG chairmen, who are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, had their tenure extended by an amended Local Government Law Number 5 of 2018 by the faction of the State House of Assembly headed by Martins Amaewhule.

However, the extension was nullified by a Rivers State High Court ruling on May 21, 2024, which declared the Local Government Law No. 2 of 2024 as inconsistent with the 1999 Constitution.

Despite the courts ruling, the chairman of Ikwerre LGA, Samuel Nwanosike, has vowed to remain in office.

Two LG chairmen from Bonny and Opobo/Nkoro, who are loyal to Fubara, celebrated the expiration of their tenures with a thanksgiving service on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Fubara has yet to release an official list of Caretaker Committee Chairmen to manage the affairs of the various LGAs following the tenure expiration.

Cholera: Nigeria must prevent spread in schools –UNICEF

The UN organisation also called for concerted efforts to prevent disruption in the academic calendar over the spread of the disease.

The Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office, Celine Lafoucrier, who made the call yesterday in a statement, said that the cholera outbreaks critically affected children and the young population.

According to Lafoucriere, these vulnerable groups face substantial health risks particularly children and young adults attending schools.

She noted that children were prone to severe dehydration and a high mortality rate.

Lafoucrier, however, solicited adequate awareness across the country to sensitise the populace on cholera outbreaks and preventive measures as part of efforts to address the issue.

Minimum wage: FG pushes N62,000 pay despite Labour’s opposition

Organised Labour

The Presidency, on Sunday, insisted that the N250,000 minimum wage clamour by Organised Labour is unsustainable, warning that the Federal Government cannot channeled all its resources to meet such a demand.

The warning comes two days after the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria raised concerns over the N62,000 being proposed by the FG.

The ALGON said if approved, the wage may put a strain on the councils financial burden.

On Tuesday, May 28, talks between the Federal Government and Organised Labour broke down after the government and the Organised Private Sector raised their offers to N62,000.

But the labour unions described the proposal as an insult to the intelligence of the average Nigerian worker, which deserves far better than what the government offered

Speaking in an exclusive interview with newsmen, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that unless the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress were selfish, they should consider that the resources meant for the entire Nigerians could not be channeled to only the benefit of their members who are not more than 10 percent of the entire population.

He said, “That is why we keep telling labour to be realistic because the government cannot use all its resources to pay workers. They have other things to do. The workers we are even talking about are not up to 10 percent of the population. Many people are self-employed or engaged in the private sector, who are not members of Labour, and are not affected by this demand.
This is even more reason why labour has to reconsider their decision critically instead of always striving to shut down the system. What the FG did was in consultation with the private sector and others. Only Labour, which appears to be in the minority, kept saying they wont accept N62,000. They are not even employers but employees.

“Let us wait and hear what they are going to say after their return from the ILO conference. But they have to be realistic”

Tinubu had disclosed during his democracy day that an executive bill on the new national minimum wage for workers would be sent to the National Assembly.

When quizzed on when he plans to transmit the bill, Onanuga said though he could not give a particular date, he sees it happening after the Sallah break.

The presidential media aide also said the Federal Government might not meet the Labour leaders again unless something cogent turned up.

‘I am not certain when he plans to do it (Bill). May be after Sallah. But I am not sure whether the FG is meeting with them or whether its position on the minimum wage has changed. Dont forget the current amount on the table was arrived at by the committee that also has the private sector where the NECA and NACIMMA were also represented.

“That was the figure the FG delegation, sub-nationals, employers, NECA and other sectors agreed on. So, the FG cannot just decide on any other amount of money on its own without carrying these people along. And the government cannot just decide anything without ensuring that the state and local governments are able to pay”, he said.

Efforts made to reach labour leaders on Sunday were unsuccessful as close sources told our correspondents they were on their way back to the country from their recent trip to Geneva for the International Labour Organisation conference.

Meanwhile, the tripartite committee established by the Federal Government to review the minimum wage has urged labour unions to reassess their wage demands.

Speaking on Sunday, the committees chairman, Bukar Aji asked labour to reconsider their position based on economic factors and the non-monetary incentives provided by the government.

Aji highlighted several incentives of the government, including the N35,000 wage award for all treasury-paid federal workers, N100bn for gas-fuelled buses and gas kit conversions, a N125bn conditional grant, financial inclusion for small and medium enterprises, and a N25,000 monthly stipend for 15 million households over three months.

He also listed the N185bn in palliative loans to states to mitigate the effects of petrol subsidy removal, N200bn to boost agricultural production, N75bn to strengthen the manufacturing sector, and N1tn for student loans, among other interventions.

Aji called on the labour unions to consider accepting the N62,000 minimum wage offered by the Federal Government.

He said the committee was trying to avert a situation where the minimum wage would lead to further job losses, especially as many businesses are already struggling.

Rivers LGA succession crisis hots up as youths take over two councils –Rivers youth

A palpable tension caused by the ongoing succession crisis enveloped the 23 local government areas of Rivers State on Monday sparking fears of possible outbreak of violence among residents of the oil-rich state.

At Degema Local Government Area secretariat, some youths were seen blocking the main entrance, chanting songs in solidarity and demanding the departure of the councils Chairman, Michael John Williams.

The youths vowed to remain at the gate till Wednesday to stop Williams and other elected officials from gaining access their offices.

They insisted that their three-year tenure on June 17 and that they should not be seen around the secretariat after the Sallah holiday.

The youths were heard chanting Chairman must go, as others arrived the gate to join them. Same scenario played out at Asari-Toru Local Government Secretariat where youths barricaded the gate to stop their LGA Chairman and others from gaining access to the area.

But at the Port Harcourt City LGA, over four patrol vans of policemen were seen keeping vigil at the gate to prevent possible breakdown of law and order.

There were indications that Rivers Governor, Siminialayi Fubara, had sent a list of caretaker committees to the lawmakers led by factional Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo.

Scores of armed youths, suspected to be surveillance workers, were seen in a viral video parading the creeks of riverine Local councils.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) claimed that the Governor had sent names of the seven-man caretaker committees for each local government area to Oko-Jumbo-led lawmakers for screening.

An unidentified leader of joint task force anti-bunkering Southsouth was seen threatening fire and brimstone in another viral video.

He said he came home with half of his armed men to take over the 23 local government areas and to escort the Caretaker committees to their various councils.

He particularly drew a battle line with the outgoing Chairman of the Ikwerre Local Government Area, Samuel Nwanosike, who earlier vowed not to vacate his office after June 17.

He said: “We are preparing and we are about to take over the local government areas on Wednesday. We are taking over the 23 local government areas. Let them wait for us, we are coming.

“We will be escorting every local government caretaker. My business is to work for the government and relate with the government to fight crime. I work with the joint task force. I am in charge of anti-bunkering Southsouth.

“I am back home with half of my men. We are getting ready for Wednesday. Let all the caretaker get ready to host my boys too. The Chairman of Ikwerre should wait for me.

“I volunteer to come to Ikwerre, wait for us. If your head is hot, we will pour it cold water and it will be cool so that you learn how to respect elders and authority especially the number one citizen.

CUPP advises Ikenga Imo to focus on legislation

The Member representing Ideato Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, has been advised to focus on his legislative duty and stop under representing the people of Ideato Nation.

The advise was given by the Spokesperson of Conference of United Progressive People (CUPP), Ideato LGA Chapter, Nze Dr. Vitus Modesty Ezenwa, in an interview with journalists recently at late Chief Collins Obi’s Council Chambers, Dikenafai, Ideato Nation, after an enlarged meeting.

CUPP alleged that since Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere went to the National Assembly, he has not done or attracted any tangible or meaningful project in Ideato Federal Constituency as erosion and bad road are still nightmares to the area, saying he is rather busy chasing shadows, instigating trouble here and there, breeding enmity for the Constituency, tarnishing its image, as well as overlooking the pressing needs of the people who it said voted him into office.

Ezenwa who stated that Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere is allegedly spending huge money on frivolities, regretted that his One Year in Office as a legislator was a monumental waste.

The group also accused the lawmaker of ignoring and sidelining the people in terms of contract awards and employment, frowning that he chose a non-Ideato indigene as his Senior Legislative Aide, positing that in the past Ideato indigenes occupied such a big position, describing Ikenga Imo as being self-righteous.

Ezenwa observed with dismay that the legislator has never held Constituency briefing since his One Year stay at the of House of Representatives, describing such as an anomaly and a neglect.

The Spokesperson of CUPP while urging the legislator to stop shying away from the erosion menace and deplorable road in the constituency, advised him to get to work, stop wasting their resources, creating trouble for them, giving them bad image before the world who he said is watching him and making jest of his actions and inactions.

Revealing that Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere does not have Constituency Office, Ezenwa advised him to leave legislation and go back to activism, a call he said Ikenga is mastery at, which gave him leeway and relevance to politics.

“I’m the right Spokesman of CUPP in Ideato Nation Chapter since Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere has stopped speaking for the poor, the voiceless and the opposition. CUPP is made up of people who are progressively minded, with passion for the growth, development and peace of their Constituency. Members are drawn from religious, political, economic and social sectors, traditional rulers are supporting us. Everybody in Ideato Nation is supporting us because they know that what we are doing is right. Our objective is to ensure that we have transparent, accountable and fair leadership in Ideato Nation”, Ezenwa maintained.

Red Alert: Victims narrate ordeal in the hands of kidnapping, ritual gang in Avu, Obinze

Bandits

Two victims of the dangerous kidnapping and ritual gang located in Avu, Obinze, Owerri West Local Government Area, who did not want their names in print for security reasons have narrated their harrowing experiences recently, warning Imo residents, the public and travelers to beware of these dare devils operating in Imo State, particularly within Avu and Obinze Axis.

The victims who were residents of Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri, confided to the media on Sunday narrating their ordeals in the hands of these men of the underworld.

According to them, these dangerous gang of kidnappers and ritualists have their den inside a thick bush/forest within Avu and Obinze communities along Port-Harcourt Road, and operate with dangerous weapons and charms.

It would be recalled that for a long period, these notorious kidnappers and ritualists have kidnapped, taken money from their victims, tortured them and killed those who could not afford their financial bidding or those who struggled to escape from them.

They get their victims by charming them in the vehicle (always commercial buses) they board in disguise as innocent passengers, hijack the vehicle on gunpoint, and in their den, they would tie up their victims’ legs, hands and eyes and force them to transfer money to the account number they provide.

“Any of their victims who does not have the kind of money they want, they force him or her to call their people, friends and victims who have no money or no body to reach out to, they kill. Many of their victims have been killed and their Den littered with human carcasses. Many have been raped, molested and maimed”

The Victims narrated that these dangerous gang of Ritualists and Kidnappers, are a mixture of Igbos, Fualani Herdsmen, Hausa and Yoruba indigenes, but Igbos among them are being fronted to get victims to their Den because of language and identity reasons.

They separately narrated that they were “coming back from work by 7: pm on Wednesday, two men entered the vehicle they boarded from Douglas by Mbaise Road.

The victims further narrated that two men who were looking innocently begged the mini bus driver to stop, that they want to buy some items, which the driver obliged them, they went inside the Super Store and came out with some goods and we continued the Journey.
On getting to Hospital Junction, along Port Harcourt Road, those men brought out guns, pointed at the bus driver. The driver followed the road where they forced him to follow.

They said, “before we know it, we saw ourselves at a dreaded secluded smelling environment in Avu. They tied our legs, hands and eyes and ordered us into the thick forest where we were raped, molested, beaten and took our money.

“They emptied all the money in our Bank Accounts, forced us to call our people and friends. They killed those who did not comply. One thing that pained us badly was a young man who they killed for struggling with them. They cut off his head with a cutlass. The den is littered with human carcasses. We were freed because we paid them hugely. I called my people who sent money”.

The lamenting victims called on the public, residents, commercial bus drivers and other road users to be careful of vehicles they enter, be mindful of people who enter their vehicle, where they stop, to avoid falling into the hands of these men of the underworld who now operate in all parts of Imo State especially Port-Harcourt Road and Owerri City.

They urged government to support the Army, the Police and other relevant security apparatuses to quickly intervene, go into the thick bush/forest located between Avu and Obinze communities in Owerri West, arrest the criminals to save life, as no one knows who are going to be their next victims.

Nobody threatened to burn down my palace – Eze Obiefule

Eze (Dr) Thomas Obiwuru Obiefule (MFR,fcei)

His Imperial Majesty, Eze Dr Thomas Obiefule(MFR, FCEI), Orlu Zonal Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers has described as false, a publication circulating in social media that some leaders of Orlu zone threatened to burn down his palace.

Condemning the publication, which originated from Owerri-based Trinity OPOCA group and endorsed by Barr Willie Amadi and one Sir Amby Uneze, Eze Obiefule, who is the Head, Umudioka Ancient Kingdom Royal Dynasty and President National Association of Royal Traditional Rulers of Nigeria said, there was never any time he spoke to the Trinity OPOCA group about threats from any person or quarters as according to him, there was never any threat from anybody.

“I am surprised that Willie Amadi and his group decided to play politics with my name and hard-earned image, by falsely alleging that two highly respected and patriotic traditional rulers of Orlu zone, His Royal Majesty, Eze Dr Emma Okeke and His Royal Majesty, Eze Dr Cletus Ilomuanya, as well as two political leaders, namely, Barr Rex Anunobi and Barr Austin Otuokere personally, threatened to burn down my house. This allegation by the Willie Amadi-led group is not only baseless, it is funny and provocative. If the group’s intention was to create disaffection and disunity among leaders of Orlu zone, it has failed and will continue to fail”, Eze Obiefule stated.

“I know the four patriotic leaders of Orlu zone accused in that social media publication of issuing threats to me very well. They are not only my good friends, they are also my brothers and we have over the years, been in the best of terms. I also know that they have nothing against me. This is why the social media publication is very embarrassing”, the Okairuro of Umudioka Ancient Kingdom stated.

” I would have ignored the provocative social media network publication as one of those funny stories but, the two Grade A traditional rulers mentioned in the allegation are my brothers and very close to me. They are also great patriots, pride to Imo state and nationally recognized personalities whose names should not be dragged to the mud by any body at will”, the royal father added.

On the issue of Imo Charter of Equity, Eze Obiefule clearly stated, ” as one of the oldest traditional rulers in Imo state, I advise all sons and daughters of Owerri and Okigwe zones who still have litigations against Governor Hope Uzodimma in the courts to withdraw such cases now from the courts, as a demonstration of their support for the charter of equity. Anything contrary to this may result in free-for-all governorship election contest for the three zones, come 2027″, he concluded.

Sallah: Chief Imams sacrificial Ram stolen In Jos

The Chief Imam of Mista Ali community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, Imam Abdulkadir, has cried out the theft of his sacrificial ram.

The incident occurred during a heavy downpour in the area on the eve of the Ed-el-Kabir.

An Imam in the community, Malam Haruna Yaqub, revealed this during the sermon right after the two Rakaat prayers, denouncing the act and labelling it as insensitive.

“The Ram of our Chief Imam, which he purposely bought to sacrifice, was stolen in the night. We are really shocked by the incident. We were surprised to hear this story. This means that people are not God-fearing. It is scary that people have gone to the extent of stealing ram meant for religious activity”, Yaqub said.

Yaqub, however, urged the people to fear God and steer clear of theft or any criminal behaviour, stressing that everyone will answer for their deeds in this life and the next.

He said, It is high time people repented and took the path of Allah. It is not too late.

“People should stop committing bad things and act according to Allahs commandments”.

Nigerian Govts plan to acquire new aircraft for Tinubu, Shettima unacceptable –Peter Obi

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has decried moves by the Federal Government to acquire new jets for President Bola Tinubu and his deputy, Kashim Shettima.

Our correspondent reports that the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence on Friday asked the Federal Government to purchase new aircraft for Tinubu and Shettima.

However, citing the current economic hardship bedeviling the nation, Obi said the move demonstrates the governments extreme insensitivity to citizens struggles.

In a series of posts on his official X handle on Monday, Obi noted that with the rising insecurity, poverty, hunger and homelessness in the country, the move highlighted the disconnect between the government and the people.

The former Anambra governor described the decision as unacceptable, adding that the situation in the country demands a more compassionate use of resources, prioritizing citizens welfare.

He wrote, “Its on record that our presidential jets have an average age of 12 years, purchased when most Nigerians could afford basic necessities. Now, as our country faces significant challenges, including a high debt profile, our citizens are in even greater need. Instead of adding to our luxuries, we should be focused on alleviating their suffering and finding solutions to their problems. For long, our bad leadership has made our priorities, as leaders, to be at variance to the needs of society, which is why we are headed now south, as a nation”

“To elucidate further, despite dropping down to the fourth-largest economy in Africa, with a GDP of $252 billion and a per capita income of $1,080, with huge debt burdens and borrowing to service debts, yet, we are spending $15 million for our Vice Presidents residence, while the USA, the worlds largest economy with a GDP of $25 trillion, about 100 times our GDP, and a per capita income of $80,000, about 80 times ours, still houses their Vice President in Number 1 Observatory Circle, a house built over 100 years ago, and whose value is obviously less than the $15 million we are spending on our VPs residence”

“A reputable real estate company, actually, reports that the US Vice Presidents Official Residence is valued at about $7.5 million today”

“Its, therefore, time to stop this impunity, insensitivity, and shamelessness and refocus on the needs of our people. We must prioritize education, healthcare, nd lifting our citizens out of poverty”

Why corruption is defeatable in Nigeria EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said that the upsurge of corruption in the country is defeatable if every stakeholder on the anti-graft corridor makes concerted efforts.

The Commissions chairman, Ola Olukoyede made this statement in his Eid-El-Kabir message.

He stressed that renewal of efforts towards combating all forms of economic and if FG denies renaming Murtala Muhammed Expressway
The Federal Government yesterday dismissed information that the Abuja Murtala Muhammed Expressway had been renamed Wole Soyinka Way.

The FG, in a statement signed by the media aide to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Rabiu Ibrahim, clarified that the renaming of the expressway was never considered by the current administration.

The confusion stems from a recent event on June 4, 2024, when President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a new road in the Federal Capital Territory.

The new road, designated as Arterial Road N20, stretches from Katampe to Jahi, connecting the Outer Northern Expressway (also known as Murtala Muhammed Expressway) to the Northern Parkway (Ahmadu Bello Way).

During the inauguration, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike proposed that the new road be named after Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, a suggestion that Tinubu approved.

Consequently, it is the Arterial Road N20 that now bears Soyinkas name, not the Murtala Mohammed Expressway.

“We have noted the rumours being circulated that the Murtala Muhammed Express Way in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has been renamed as Wole Soyinka Way. The renaming of the Murtala Mohammed Expressway Way has never been contemplated by this administration”

“For the record, on June 4, 2024, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated a new road in the FCT codenamed Arterial Road N20 (from Katampe to Jahi), which links the existing Outer Northern Expressway (also known as Murtala Muhammed Expressway) to the Northern Parkway (also called Ahmadu Bello Way).
During the inauguration of the N20 (which is a new road), FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, proposed to the President that the road be named after Prof Wole Soyinka, and the President agreed”, the statement read in part.

The government emphasised that the Murtala Mohammed Expressway remains unchanged, continuing to honour the legacy of the former Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Mohammed.
Therefore, the Arterial Road N20 is named after Prof Soyinka. The Murtala Muhammed Expressway remains unchanged and continues to bear the name of our esteemed former Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, Ibrahim stressed.

Citizens were urged to disregard any misinformation suggesting otherwise, as such reports are false and unfounded.

“We urge all citizens to disregard any misinformation regarding renaming the Murtala Muhammed Expressway. The report is entirely false and only exists in the imagination of its purveyors”, the statement added.

ancial crimes is necessary to kill the menace.
It is obvious that we can attain peace, love, progress and unity of purpose for a Nigeria free of corruption and unsavoury practices.
Lets keep building. Lets keep attacking every threat to our progress. Lets keep fighting economic and financial crimes together, he said.
Olukoyede added that Nigerians were not inherently corrupt, and there was nothing fundamentally wrong with the nation.
The anti-graft boss felicitated with the nation on the occasion of Eid-El-Kabir, emphasizing that the lessons of the festival should drive more commitments to the anti-corruption fight.
The lessons of forbearance, sacrifice, faith and hope in Almighty Allah which Eid teaches should imbue in us fresh desire to please God and serve our nation without corrupt practices.
We should renew our efforts towards fighting all forms of economic and financial crimes, he said.

Us-based oil and gas businessman, Robert Onyejekwe, found dead in Lagos hotel

Robert Onyejekwe, a successful oil and gas executive based in Sugar Land, Houston, Texas, has been found dead in his hotel room in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Onyejekwe, who was in Nigeria for business meetings, was discovered on the evening of Sunday, June 9, 2024.

The 51-year-old executive had traveled to Nigeria to oversee business dealings related to an oil and gas company he purchased four years ago.

Sources indicate that Onyejekwe planned to move back to Nigeria soon to personally manage the company after uncovering suspicious activities by those he had entrusted with its operation.

Onyejekwes death came as a shock, particularly given his active involvement in the industry and his recent hosting of the annual Over The Counter (OTC) party in Houston, Texas. His wife and a family friend are en route to Lagos to arrange for the return of his body to Houston for burial.

Born in Onitsha, Anambra State, Onyejekwe held a distinguished career in the oil and gas sector. He served as the President of Bits and Drilling Tools, a division of Schlumberger, where he led the development of innovative drilling technologies designed to reduce costs and improve efficiency in the oil and gas industry.

Before his role as President, Onyejekwe was the Global Director of Sales and Commercial for the Reservoir and Infrastructure group at Schlumberger. He was responsible for deal origination and growth strategies across eight business product lines, focusing on market expansion and penetration.

Onyejekwes academic credentials included a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Ibadan, an MBA from the University of Rotterdam, and a diploma in Finance from IMD University in Switzerland.

He was an active member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) since 1996 and the Africa Energy Chamber.

Tinubu’s Super Eagles

Qualification for the 2006 World is beyond those presently saddled with that responsibility.

President Bola Tinubu should as a matter of national emergency, take the Super Eagles to the Presidency as a full-fledged Department.

Bringing the senior national soccer team so close to Tinubu is the only way the wrongs of the last four qualifying games can be corrected. Failure to act now means that, for the first time since their debut in 1994, the Eagles will miss the Mundial for the second time in a row.
The president and his handlers should be concerned, for this record will be bad for Tinubu’s image. Should it happen, he will be the first in the Fourth Republic to be denied Eagles’ World Cup presence during a first tenure.

Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo saw the team qualify for the Korea Japan 2002 edition. Alhaji Umaru Yar’adua was in office when ticket for South Africa 2010 came. Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was president at the time Stephen Keshi led Nigeria to Brazil 2014. In Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s first tenure, there was Russia 2018.
Tinubu should be worried stiff. These boys will be unfair to him if after rewarding them bountifully for winning silver at the Cote d’Ivoire 2024 African Nations Cup, their thank you is to break the hearts of over 200 million fans.

There must be total surgical operation. A Presidential Task Force headed by possibly, governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu with the Sports minister as Vice Chairman, should be set up immediately to work with the Nigeria Football Federation.

There are six matches to go and the task of winning all these games must be accomplished. We are in this mess now because all those involved, failed to do the right thing, at the right time. From the NFF to Finidi George, down to the players.
While group opponents, South Africa, Benin Republic, Rwanda, Lesotho and Zimbabwe were busy preparing for the third matches, the NFF failed to appoint a coach for the Eagles. Finidi was late in coming amidst undue controversy.

As teams went to camp, there were no plans to set up one for the Eagles until the very last minute. Many of the players were in the country for long, idling away, from choice locations to the inner city.

Coordination was non existent.
Finidi did not quite settle down. Choosing people to work with him was not only politicised, the decision was poor. This is one area that must be looked into. I think, a man like Sylvanus Okpala, has to be drafted to the team. Okpala won the African Nations Cup with the Eagles in 1980, played in Europe, captained the Eagles to the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games and was assistant coach when a third Nations Cup gold was achieved in 2013. He may not be in the good books of the NFF but the man will be useful at this time.

Finidi cannot be crucified for being on the quiet side. I will blame him for not relating well with some of his players. Captain William Troost – Ekong is not 100 percent fit quite alright, but a listening manager would have kept him in camp in the last two disastrous matches against Bafana Bafana and Cheetahs.

Ekong is a true leader, a Field Marshal who knows how to galvanise his troops. His presence would have lifted the spirit of his team mates. It is remarkable that this strong man who was not born in Nigeria, is more committed than some of those born into eba and Agege bread.

The Eagles need a Camp Commandant. This idea of strolling into camp must stop. There are many Lieutenant Colonels, Commanders, Wing Commanders and Chief Superintendents of Police who can do this job effectively. We are in a crisis situation, some martial tactics will help. The players failed even themselves in the last two games. They have also apologised. This is time to show what Nigeria can do. If the Eagles could qualify for Russia 2018 in a group that included Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia, they can soar above the present opposition.

May I remind President Tinubu that Clemens Westerhof succeeded because the Presidency backed him. Vice President Augustus Aikhomu and President Ibrahim Babangida knew everything that transpired between the team and NFF.

Many of us may not know that until Aikhomu died, he carried the Eagles on his head. On the way to Korea/ Japan, Nigeria was on the way out, in a group that had weaklings like Sudan, Sierra Leone, Liberia and a poor Ghanaian squad.

Obasanjo fished out Aikhomu who put things right, schooling players and officials on why Nigeria must not stay home while others were in the Far East for the global show. Football is politics and helps make bold statements in the field of diplomacy.

Tinubu must not fail Nigerians. He must perform a miracle. Flying Eagles did it in Dammam. Patriotism can never offer a better opportunity. Without this country in the Americas in 2026, I am certain that Mr. President will not sleep. Wahala go dey.

Let Tinubu invite the boys to October 1 celebrations at Eagle Square. By the time they watch the Armed Forces parade, they will understand the power of the Eagles jersey. I hope that female naval officer, Lt. Okeke, will do some ceremonials with Flt. Lt. Sambo, Supol Shuaibu Suleman and Squadron Leader Uchenna Asogwa.

Minimum Wage: Senate deny plan to seize states, LGs funds

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, has categorically denied recent speculations suggesting that the National Assembly’s Upper Chamber is considering a clause to seize funds from states and local councils in the forthcoming New Minimum Wage Bill proposed by the Executive.

The controversy began after a report by a national daily, claimed that federal lawmakers were contemplating the inclusion of a controversial clause that would allow for the seizure of funds when the bill is introduced in the Senate.
This report has since sparked widespread discussions and concerns among stakeholders.

In response to these claims, Yemi Adaramodu issued a formal statement from Abuja on yesterday, dismissing the allegations as entirely unfounded.
Adaramodu said, “Mr. President in his national broadcast on Democracy Day only informed Nigerians that he would soon send the New Minimum Wage Bill to us.

“No one among us, not even the Senate President, knows the content of the Bill. How can we take a position on a document that we haven’t even sighted?

“During my interface with some journalists, who approached me for an interview as part of activities to mark the one year anniversary of the 10th National Assembly, I did not at any point, state that the allocations belonging to States and Local Governments will be seized.

“Nigeria is a federation, with sub-national governments that are autonomous. The misleading headline by The Punch Newspaper that allocations belonging to States and local councils will be seized is false and should be disregarded.

“We are still awaiting the Executive Bill and once we have it, it will go through all Legislative stages and once this is done and it receives Presidential assent, it becomes law. And it is law that can specify sanction, not the National Assembly.

“My interview was well reported today in the national dailies. It was not exclusive to The Punch. Other newspapers reflected adequately what I said. Why did Punch choose to misrepresent me?”
