Over 1,000 pilgrims died during Hajj in Saudi Arabia this year, officials say

More than 1,000 people died during this years Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia as the faithful faced extreme high temperatures at Islamic holy sites in the desert kingdom, officials said Sunday.

More than half of the fatalities were people from Egypt, according to two officials in Cairo. Egypt revoked the licenses of 16 travel agencies that helped unauthorized pilgrims travel to Saudi Arabia, authorities said.

Saudi Arabia has not commented on the deaths during the pilgrimage, which is required of every able Muslim once in their life.

The Egyptian government announced the death of 31 authorized pilgrims due to chronic diseases during this years Hajj, but didnt offer an official tally for other pilgrims.

However, a Cabinet official said that at least 630 other Egyptians died during the pilgrimage, with most reported at the Emergency Complex in Meccas Al-Muaisem neighborhood.
Confirming the tally, an Egyptian diplomat said most of the dead have been buried in Saudi Arabia.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief journalists.

Saudi authorities cracked down on unauthorized pilgrims, expelling tens of thousands of people. But many, mostly Egyptians, managed to reach holy sites in and around Mecca, some on foot. Unlike authorized pilgrims, they had no hotels to escape from the scorching heat.

In its statement, the government said the 16 travel agencies failed to provide adequate services for pilgrims. It said these agencies illegally facilitated the travel of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia using visas that dont allow holders to travel to Mecca.

The government also said officials from the companies have been referred to the public prosecutor for investigations.

The fatalities also included 165 pilgrims from Indonesia, 98 from India and dozens more from Jordan, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Malaysia, according to an Associated Press tally. Two U.S. pilgrims were also reported dead.

The AP could not independently confirm the causes of death, but some countries like Jordan and Tunisia blamed the soaring heat.

Associated Press journalists saw pilgrims fainting from the scorching heat during the Hajj, especially on the second and third days. Some vomited and collapsed.

Deaths are not uncommon at the Hajj, which has seen at times over 2 million people travel to Saudi Arabia for a five-day pilgrimage. The pilgrimages history has also seen deadly stampedes and epidemics.

But this years tally was unusually high, suggesting exceptional circumstances.
A 2015 stampede in Mina during the Hajj killed over 2,400 pilgrims, the deadliest incident ever to strike the pilgrimage, according to an AP count. Saudi Arabia has never acknowledged the full toll of the stampede. A separate crane collapse at Meccas Grand Mosque earlier the same year killed 111.

The second-deadliest incident at the Hajj was a 1990 stampede that killed 1,426 people.
During this years Hajj period, daily high temperatures ranged between 46 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit) and 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) in Mecca and sacred sites in and around the city, according to the Saudi National Center for Meteorology. Some people fainted while trying to perform the symbolic stoning of the devil.

The Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is one of the worlds largest religious gatherings. More than 1.83 million Muslims performed the Hajj in 2024, including more than 1.6 million from 22 countries, and around 222,000 Saudi citizens and residents, according to the Saudi Hajj authorities.

Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars on crowd control and safety measures for those attending the annual five-day pilgrimage, but the sheer number of participants makes ensuring their safety difficult.

Climate change could make the risk even greater. A 2019 study by experts at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that even if the world succeeds in mitigating the worst effects of climate change, the Hajj would be held in temperatures exceeding an extreme danger threshold from 2047 to 2052, and from 2079 to 2086.

Islam follows a lunar calendar, so the Hajj comes around 11 days earlier each year. By 2029, the Hajj will occur in April, and for several years after that it will fall in the winter, when temperatures are milder.

Civil servants who relocated abroad must repay salaries –Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that civil servants who moved abroad while still drawing salaries without officially resigning must reimburse the wages they received during that time.

The reports said that Tinubu made this statement at the 2024 Civil Service Award and Gala Night, which marked the conclusion of the week-long 2024 Civil Service Week, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

During a media briefing to commemorate the 2024 Civil Service Week, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Folasade Yemi-Esan, revealed that some employees had relocated abroad while continuing to draw salaries without officially resigning.

She noted that measures have been put in place to address this issue.

Speaking on Saturday, President Tinubu called for accountability and restitution, stating that civil servants who fraudulently collected salaries must repay the money and that their supervisors should be punished for enabling the fraud.

He emphasized that the Civil Service is crucial for government operations and cannot tolerate misconduct.

Tinubu highlighted the Civil Services role as the foundation and engine of government, essential for delivering public services.

The President emphasized the need for accountability and restitution: We must ensure those responsible are held accountable and restitution is made.

The individuals involved must repay the money they fraudulently collected. Additionally, their supervisors and department heads must be punished for allowing and facilitating this fraud under their supervision.

The civil service of any nation is too important for such misconduct to take root or be tolerated. The Civil Service is the foundation, the engine, the driving force of government, essential for delivering public services to citizens. As politicians, we are merely the drivers of the locomotives that you provide.

He stressed that the Civil Service cannot become a place where anything goes and where employees break rules without fear of consequences.

Strike: We Don’t Want Another Shut Down OF Varsities –NANS, Parents Beg FG, Unions

As academic and non-academic workers in the university system have threatened to embark on another round of industrial action, students and parents have said they dont want another closure of universities, calling on the workers and the government to find a way out of their face-off.

According to them, incessant closure of universities is one of the reasons the schools are not faring well in global rankings.

The students spoke under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, and the parents under the auspices of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, NAPTAN.

Speaking in a chat with newsmen, the National President of NANS, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, noted that students were always bearing the brunt in cases of industrial actions by university workers.

Government should listen to the lecturers and university workers generally. Some of the things the lecturers are complaining about are genuine.

Look at the issue of the composition of Governing Councils for higher institutions in the country, many people who have no job being put into such positions were included. Such sensitive positions should be for technocrats in the education sector and academicians.

Why would the government not honour an agreement it willingly entered into. Honour an agreement you signed.

However, I would appeal to ASUU members to also give room for mediation and negotiation because in the long run, all parties would still come to the table to talk. Let the parties give room for negotiation and mediation. Students are always at the receiving end of such fight between the sides and nobody wants to waste his or her precious time, he said.

Also speaking, the Deputy National President of NAPTAN, Chief Adeolu Ogunbanjo, said government should honour its promise to the workers.

Government should pay them and fulfil their obligations. When they went on strike the other time, part of what was agreed to making the workers suspend their action was that nobody would be victimized on account of the strike.

So, if you are not paying them their dues, are you not victimizing the workers? If ASUU goes on strike, SSANU and NASU do so, the university system would collapse. The other time parents had to keep their children at home for about a session, that is not good for the system.
Look at the recent global ranking of universities, the best ranked university in the country was in about 1,000th position. All these incessant stikes are parts of the poor ranking of our universities. Government should just be alive to its responsibilities and avert another round of industrial disharmony, he noted.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, is already warming up for another strike, following the inability of the government to meet some of their demands.

The union, last week, started nationwide press briefings and sensitisation on issues it said could disrupt academic activities on campuses.

Top on the list of their demands is the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement and its implementation.

The agreement is about better welfare packages, funding of the universities, better facilities among others.

Also, ASUU is demanding the payment of four months withheld salaries of members.
Eight months salaries were withheld following the 2022 strike by the union, but only four months have been paid by the Bola Tinubu administration.

On the other hand, non-teaching staff under the umbrella of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, National Association of Academic Technologists,NAAT and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions, NASU, are also demanding the payment of their withheld salaries of between three and a half months and five and a half months.
They are also calling for the implementation of an earlier agreement entered into by their unions and the government.

The academic and non-academic unions have given various timelines as when their demands must be met or they would go on strike.

Data of Nigerians remains secure NIMC assures public

In response to allegations of exposed sensitive data, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reassured the public that the data of Nigerians remains uncompromised.

The reports has it that this assurance was provided in a statement issued on Saturday by Kayode Adegoke, the head of corporate communications at NIMC.

The concern arose after Paradigm Initiative, a pan-African social enterprise, reported on Thursday that National Identification Numbers (NINs), Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs), and other personal data of Nigerians were being sold on a website for as little as N100.

The organization identified AnyVerify.com.ng as a platform involved in the illegal sale of such data.

Paradigm Initiative highlighted that multiple unauthorized websites claim to possess and sell sensitive personal and financial information of Nigerian citizens for minimal amounts, raising significant privacy and security concerns.

This alarming development presents a major breach of the fundamental rights to privacy, a breach of data privacy rights, and poses significant risks to individuals and the national economy, the organization stated.

In response to these reports, NIMC clarified that it has not authorized any website or entity to sell or misuse the National Identification Number (NIN) or any other identities.

The Commission specifically named idfinder.com.ng, Verify.Ng/sign in, championtech.com.ng, trustyonline.com, and anyverify.com as unauthorized data harvesters.

NIMC urged the public to disregard any claims or services offered by these websites, warning that they are potentially fraudulent and collect data to provide illegal services.

The Commission has implemented robust measures to protect the nations database from cyber threats, ensuring a secure, world-class, and foolproof system.

Our infrastructure complies with the stringent ISO 27001:2013 Information Security Management System Standard, with annual recertification and adherence to Nigerian Data Protection Law, the statement emphasized.

NIMC also advised Nigerians to avoid submitting their data to unauthorized or phishing sites, as this could lead to data harvesting and compromise individual privacy.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to ethical standards in data protection, in line with federal government directives and data privacy regulations.

Additionally, licensed partners or vendors are only authorized to verify NINs through approved channels, not to scan or store NIN slips.

The Commission is collaborating closely with security operatives to apprehend those masquerading as online vendors, who will face the full extent of the law, the statement continued.

NIMC concluded by urging the public to remain vigilant against false information and rely on verified sources for accurate updates.

The Commission remains dedicated to providing secure and reliable identity management, ensuring the highest level of security for national systems and databases

New Minimum Wage: ₦62,000 cannot do anything – Orji Kalu tells Tinubu

Abia North Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has advocated that the federal government should pay more than ₦62,000 as the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

The former Governor advocated that President Bola Tinubu should make the minimum wage ₦90,000 because civil servants need good treatment and the minimum wage has not been increased in the last five years despite the inflation in the country.

Kalu also said that although the President has done well in certain aspects of the economy, it is obvious that Nigerians are hungry, and more needs to be done in the area of food production.
Speaking with Channels Television, the federal lawmaker said: Im sure the president has done well in some areas and he also needs to improve in many other areas. Im a very practical person, I fear nobody and I support the truth.

President Tinubu has done so well in some areas, and in some other areas of feeding our people, people are hungry, so I cannot say.

He has done well in economic policy, monetary policy. Very good.
But in fiscal policies we haven’t grown more food. I want us to grow more food.”
On the new minimum wage, Kalu proposed ₦90,000, and also advocated local government autonomy.

“I’m a proponent that local governments should be getting their money fully.

“I also believe that N62,000 cannot do anything. N90,000 and why Im proposing N90,000 is very simple. We have not increased the minimum wage in five years.

Labour sends warning to Governors on minimum wage, awaits Tinubus decision

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), on Saturday, sent a warning to some of the governors not to plunge the country into a state of resentment, misery, and impoverishment through their wrong pieces of advice.

The Organized Labour also reiterated that the position taken by President Bola Tinubu on the two proposals before him from the report of the Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage would determine their next line of action.

It would be recalled that the government team and the organized private sector made an offer of ₦62,000 on the last day of the meeting of the Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage.

The organised labour rejected the offer and requested ₦250,000 as a new living wage.
Speaking to newsmen, the Head of Information of the NLC, Comrade Benson Upah, said that the two labour centres will subject whatever figure the President submits to the National Assembly to the decision of the appropriate organs of the two labour centres.

He also ruled out the option of rushing to strike immediately, explaining that not every problem will be solved with a strike and adding that a strike is always the last option.

Fielding questions over the agitation in some quarters that President Tinubu has delayed making pronouncements on the figure to be transmitted to the National Assembly, Comrade Upah advised Nigerians to tarry for a while in concluding, contending that the report was sent to the President within the period of Democracy Day and Sallah when some relevant stakeholders had to travel out.

The NLC spokesman said, As at the time the Tripartite Committee submitted the report to the President, there was Democracy Day and then the Sallah break, all of which were practically lumped together for the political stakeholders to travel.

So, on the length of time taken for the transmission of the executive bill, we have no issue with that; what we are concerned about is what will be transmitted to the National Assembly.

Asked what will be the reaction of the organized labour if the government decides to go with the N62,000 as offered by the government and the organized private sector against the labours demand of N250,000, he said, Well, let the government come up with it first, and then I even want you to note that there is division in the ranks of the government team, with the governors saying they cant even pay the N62,000. So, whatever the government transmits to the National Assembly, will determine our mood. So, let us wait to reach the bridge before we climb it.

On the allegation that the state governors are the obstacle to the new minimum wage and what would be the position of the organized labour towards the disposition of the governors to a new living wage, Upah said that the governors have a negative disposition to a new living wage are in the minority but very vocal.

According to him, In fairness, we will not say that the state governors are the obstacle; it is a vocal minority in the ranks of the governors that is projecting the governors as bad and dishonest people, and we know that minority group. Quite a number of governors have come out to say that whatever they say is the minimum wage, we are ready to pay, quite a number of them have said so.

Our message is to the vocal minority group in the rank of the governors, giving the governors a bad name, misleading the President, and creating a major social problem in the country. We would warn them to retrace their steps; their behaviour in their state has not enhanced the wealth or capacity of their states.

We will advise them to retrace their steps instead of giving a piece of advice that is capable of plunging the country into a state of impoverishment, the state of misery, and the state of resentment

Adebayo faults ex-Eagles

Former Bloemfontein Celtic manager, Kola Adebayo, believes the job of coaching the Super Eagles is too big for the stars who graduated from the senior national team even if they were outstanding as players.

Adebayo emphasised that it takes more than winning trophies as a player to become a good coach, advising Super Eagles Veterans not to see coaching the team as a birthright simply because they represented Nigeria.

He said : “The senior team is too big for these ex – players. Many of them lack what it takes to handle a big brand like the Super Eagles. That one played good football does not necessarily mean that he will transform to a great coach.”

The coach who has worked in South Africa, Benin Republic, the United Arab Emirates and ,of course, Nigeria pointed out that some candidates remember to apply for the big job as a last resort.

Sportflakes

“You can see that they apply to coach the Super Eagles when there is nothing else to do. You never saw Segun Odegbami or Adokiye Amiesimaka attend any coaching interview. They are professionals outside football and have made contributions in retirement.

“Jay Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu are still benefitting and adding to the game without looking for coaching offers. As coach of Sharks, I worked with Amiesimaka. He was chairman of the club and understands soccer but faced his job,” Adebayo added.

“Coaching is a calling. It is not a profession you dabble into. Let me give an instance, three hours to a match, one of your reliable players gets a call that his wife has gone to the labour room. As he enters the pitch, there is no news yet.

“In that state of mind, he can’t give his best and it will affect team performance. Then in the next training session, you ask the players to run round the field ten times. That’s off the mark. A good coach must be a good psychologist. If he understands his players, they can die for him.”

However, Adebayo singled out Keshi as a former player who distinguished himself managing the Eagles.

“Yes, Keshi was exceptional but don’t forget that he was not desperate. He worked in the United States and when he returned to Nigeria, understudied other coaches. The same man qualified Togo for the 2006 World Cup, took Mali to the 2010 African Nations Cup before being employed as Eagles gaffer,” Adebayo said.

He went on to prove that some of the country’s good outings happened under those who did not play for the Eagles.
“Amodu Shuaibu qualified the team for the World Cup twice, he did not play for Nigeria. The first time Eagles won African Nations Cup silver, Adegboye Onigbinde, a former Games Master and good tactician, was in charge.

“Apart from Keshi, the other ex – Eagles could not go beyond the African Nations Cup semi finals. Christian Chukwu won bronze in 2004. Austin Eguavoen, followed with another bronze in 2006.”
Kolawole Lateef Adebayo played as an Academicals and was part of the St. Gregory’s College, Obalende team that won the Lagos State Principal’s Cup in 1980. Other players included Tarila Okoronwanta, Sam Owo, Muyiwa Oguntolu, Richmond Gbontir and Joachim Aronu.

He was in the Youths Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) squad that lifted the Gothia Cup, Sweden in 1980. His team mates were Tarila, Paul Okoku, Tajudeen Disu, Patrick Udoh, Gafar Ijaya, Saliu Isiaka and Loveday Omoruyi.

As a player, he roved from NNPC to Mandilas, Police Machine and Housing Corporation. Adebayo has managed teams like Stationery Stores, Sharks, Mobil Pegasus and Offa United. As coach of the DHL Nigeria, his team has won the DHL Africa championships once. They defended the trophy up to the grand finale in 2024.

Adebayo was a gold medalist with Yaba College of Technology in 2007 when he led them to soccer gold of the West African Polythecnics Games Association ( WAPOGA).

Yabatech defeated Ibadan Polytechnic, coached by Moses Otolorin, 1-0.
That year, Yabatech battered continental flag bearers, Warri Wolves, 3-0 in a friendly. Shooting Stars got a barren draw while Union Bank lost 2-0.

Outside the country, he was in charge South African club, Bloemfontein Celtic before flying back West to lead Tofa of Benin Republic. Adebayo moved beyond Africa to coach Fujirah Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

He was one of those who applied to coach the Super Eagles following the exit of Sunday Oliseh. The job eluded him. The NFF settled for Gernot Rohr.

50 Rep members demand Nnamdi Kanu’s release, write Tinubu

About 50 members of the House of Representatives from different parts of Nigeria and political parties, known as Concerned Federal Lawmakers for Peace and Security in the South East, have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to invoke Section 174 of the Constitution of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 for the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, from detention, to aid the restoration of peace in the South East.

The lawmakers, who hail from different political parties and geopolitical zones across the nation, also appealed to President Tinubu to commence a Presidential peace initiative to address all issues and challenges bedeviling the Southeast region of Nigeria.
These appeals were contained in a three-page letter signed by the lawmakers, dated June 19, 2024, and addressed to the President.

The signatories include Hon Obi Aguocha (Abia), Hon Ikenga Ugochinyere (Imo), Hon. Aliyu Mustapha (Kaduna), Hon Midala Balami (Borno), Hon Afam Ogene (Anambra), Hon. Abiante Awaji-Inombek (Rivers), Hon Dominic Okafor (Anambra), Hon Etanabene Benedict (Delta), Hon. Shehu Dalhatu (Katsina), Hon Chinedu Emeka Martins (Imo), Hon. Matthew Nwogu (Imo), Hon. Muhammed Buba Jagere (Yobe), Hon Peter Aniekwe (Anambra), Hon Koki Sagir (Kano), Hon Amobi Oga (Abia), Hon Gwacham Chinwe (Anambra), Hon Uchenna Okonkwo (Anambra), Hon. Abdulmaleek Danga (Kogi), Hon. Osi Nkemkama (Ebonyi), and others.

They urged the President to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN, to invoke his powers of nolle prosequi under the provisions of Section 174(1) of the Constitution and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, and cause the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention and discontinue his trial.

According to the lawmakers, they believe it is long overdue and would be instrumental in opening the door for much-needed conversations surrounding peace restoration and inclusivity as well as addressing the issues that led to the agitations.

They recalled that the President extended this gesture through the office of the Attorney General in the charge involving Omoyele Sowore, wherein he was charged with treasonable felony in Charge No FHC/ABJ CR/235/2019, and Sunday Igboho.
The concerned legislators lamented that the South-East is in turmoil and unsafe for various reasons, including a breakdown of security, a downturn of economic activities, families running away from their homes, and businesses crumbling.

They opined that fixing the challenges in the South-East would go a long way in changing the narrative and showcasing the Presidents commitment to upholding the principles of rule of law, justice and fairness, which are the bedrock of our democracy.

They also stated that addressing issues through dialogue rather than prolonged political and judicial persecution would pave the way for peace initiatives, economic revitalization, and a renewed sense of belonging among the citizens of the southeast. Expressing optimism about a positive response from the President, the concerned lawmakers added that this would enhance President Tinubus administrations legacy as one that prioritizes national unity, peace, and progress.

The letter read in part, Your Excellency, we are concerned members of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with a strong belief and trust that the RENEWED HOPE agenda of His Excellency and the various positive reforms would be seen and felt by all. It is against this backdrop that we, the undersigned, hereby beseech Your Excellency to direct the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN, to invoke his powers of nolle prosequi under the provisions of Section 174(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, and cause the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention and discontinue his trial. We collectively believe this is long overdue and would be instrumental in opening the door for much-needed conversations surrounding peace reformation and inclusivity, as well as addressing the issues that led to the agitations, especially at this time when Nigeria is going through several constitutional reforms.

Your Excellency, we resolutely believe that this singular act can serve as a pivotal gesture towards national unity, as it would address some of the political, security, and economic concerns in the region. It would encourage stakeholders from the Southeast to engage more actively in the national discussions on the renewed hope agenda, thereby promoting inclusivity and addressing long-standing grievances. This, we believe, will also help dismantle the apparatus of violence and restiveness that has plagued the region, allowing for a focus on economic growth and development. This comes at a time when the nation-state is under enormous pressure, including but not limited to unemployment, insecurity, hunger, and poverty, thereby de-escalating tension from all sides.

Moreover, we, as key actors in the renewed hope agenda of Your Excellency, are not unmindful of the fact that Your Excellency has extended this gesture through the office of the Attorney General in the charge involving Omoyele Sowore, wherein he was charged with treasonable felony in Charge No. FHC/ABJ CR/235/2019, Sunday Igboho, and others. All these recorded tremendous successes, especially in resolving the crisis within the North-Central, North-Eastern, and South-South regions, not forgetting peace efforts in the Niger-Delta region, which have helped in many ways.

The establishment of the North East Development Commission, Ministry of the Niger-Delta, Niger-Delta Development Commission, Presidential Amnesty, various host community laws, etc., were all commitments to show good faith to the plight of the people as well as resolving regional conflicts.

It is, therefore, our conviction that fixing the challenges in the South-East would go a long way in changing the narrative and showcasing your commitment to upholding the principles of rule of law, justice, and fairness, which are the bedrock of our democracy. It would also set a precedent for addressing issues through dialogue rather than prolonged political and judicial persecution and a brass show of executive lawlessness. We, therefore, implore Your Excellency to adopt this approach, save the South-East, and pave the way for a national conversation to restore, safeguard, and improve the resources and economic activities in the South-East.
The primary responsibility of the government is the protection of lives and property. Facilitating the release of Nnamdi Kanu would demonstrate a commitment to upholding the principles of justice and fairness, which are the bedrock of our democracy.

Your Excellency, the benefits of such a bold and compassionate act are manifold. It would pave the way for peace initiatives, economic revitalization, and a renewed sense of belonging among the citizens of the Southeast. It would also enhance your administrations legacy as one that prioritizes national unity, peace, and progress. We are hopeful that you will consider this request with the gravity it deserves and take the necessary steps to bring about a new era of peace and inclusivity in Nigeria. Thank you, Your Excellency, for your attention to this important matter, and we look forward to a positive response.

Uzodimma: Space economy has a lot of economic benefits

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has said that metamorphosis from analogue to digital economy has made it imperative that we pay attention to the digital age where Space travel is pregnant with so many economic benefits.

While suggesting that Nigerians should not joke with Space economy, Governor Uzodimma insists that as a person he believes in it and will stop at nothing to support any collaboration in the area of Space Research.

Speaking Thursday at Government House Owerri when he paid host to members of the National Space Research Development Agency (NASRDA) and Space Exploration and Research Agency (SERA), Governor Uzodimma told his guests to count on the State’s support and partnership in the establishment of Space Research Centre for its economic benefits in Imo.

He maintained that “the issue of Space Research is a serious business and should not be toyed with,” noting that “it is estimated that soon there will be tourism in Space and Nations will want to share in the economy thereof.”

Governor Uzodimma noted that innovation and research have gone beyond discovery on earth “as the planet, rather the world, has gone into research on how to help manage the Space as a market for both the military and civilian alike.”

He said that the gains of Space Research and travels are for both private and public sectors and that “every conscious State or Nation will like to participate and be part of the gains.”

The Governor insisted that he strongly believes that the National Space Research Development Agency has the mandate of the federal government to give opportunity for at least two Nigerians to visit the Space every year and would wish that an Imo citizen fits the mould.

He expressed gratitude for the choice of Imo State for the Space Research pilot project and reminded his guests that Imo State will be glad to have her own Astronaut.
Governor Uzodimma said that while the older generation may not be interested in the unfolding dynamics in the new world of digital existence, “the younger ones, especially our students in mostly tertiary institutions, will be encouraged to develop interest and participate.”
He therefore directed the Commissioner for Education and that of Science and Technology, to ensure that the visitors are introduced to our schools “so that the students will, on their own, show interest in astrology.”

Explaining their mission to Imo State, Dr Ayantunji Benjamin Gbenro who is the Director of Physical and Life Sciences of NASDRA and representing the Agency’s Director General, Dr. Marthin Olumide Adepoju, said that they came to express their interest in establishing and domesticating the National Space Research Development Agency in Imo State “because of the person of His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodimma,” whom he said they regard as “the best Governor in Nigeria.”

He added that it has become necessary to “build the Space Satellite in Nigeria for Nigeria as against what was done in the past when it was built in United States and called Nigerian Space.”

Dr. Gbenro who furthermore explained that the essence is to put Nigerians in the Space, added that “we looking at the bigger picture of Nigeria reaping in the Space economy which has a lot of potentials bigger than that of oil and gas.”

“Again the target is to make Nigeria to be the first Nation in Africa to send man to the Space,” he explained and congratulated the Governor for quickly accepting to align his government with the project, accepting to receive them and discussing the issues, including signing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Ohaji-Egbema APC ready for LGA Polls …Sets up zoning committee for chairmanship, vice Chairman

Imo state

In a well attended meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the residence of the Zonal Vice Chairman of the party. Hon. Barr Kelvin Ugwu in Obosima, Ohuba Ward, Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, the leadership and members of the party said they were ready for the forthcoming lGA polls and set up a committee to look at the zoning of the offices of the LGA chairman and that of the Vice Chairman, in line with the method of sharing political offices in the area.

The decision followed a motion moved by Hon Osondu Chimaokwu, former Leader of the Ohaji/Egbema Legislative Council, seconded by Hon Chidi Igwe, also a former member of the Ohaji/Egbema LGA Legislative Council, to ensure that the party, in the LGA has a rancour free and credible process of chosing a candidate for the office of Chairman and Vice Chairman for the forthcoming LGA election.

Consequently, the party adopted the motion that a zoning committee be created to look at the zoning of the offices and nominated five members for the zoning arrangement with Prof Vitalis Chukwudi Nwulu as Chairman.

Other members of the committee are: Engr Tony Okanne, Hon Cas-Henry Ogbuka, Deacon Ernest Oziri, and Hon Augustine Achor Ejizu, Secretary.

The zoning committee members were inaugurated by the LGA chairman of the party, Hon. Obioma Obasi.

The party also frowned at the activities of some party members who willfully hold and attend party meetings not called by the leadership of the party in the LGA and without their express approval, even as the party resolved that henceforth, only acknowledged party officials from the LGA are entitled to call and hold meetings of the party.

The party condemned in very strong terms, a recent meeting attended by party members at Umuokanne on Tuesday, May 28th, 2024, where some persons who were believed to be members of the APC in Ohaji/Egbema were reported to have zoned the LGA chairmanship position for the forthcoming council polls to Awarra Court Area of Ohaji, against the method of sharing political offices in the area.

The party said: “Ohaji/Egbema APC wishes to disassociate itself from the said zoning of the chairmanship.

position to a particular area, as the decision was not in tandem with the wishes and aspirations of our party. The purported zoning is also at variance with the operational method of sharing party positions for elections in the LGA.”

In their speeches, the Ward Chairmen and women leaders at the grassroots joined in condemning the recent meeting at Umuokanne, Ohaji, where a particular person unilaterally named an area to produce the chairmanship position come September 24, 2024 LGA Elections.

Speakers at the meeting comprised the immediate past Minister of Education and a former Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Goodluck Nanah Opiah, who admonished the leadership and membees of the party to remain steadfast and continue to support Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is doing so much to deliver on his campaign promises.

Others include Hon. Chief Princewill Onyeaju, the current SOLAD of the LGA who assured the party stalwarts of better days in the LGA; a serving commissioner of the Imo State House of Assembly Service Commission, Hon. Lady Oby Ajoku (Ada Ohaji), the immesiate past SOLAD of the LGA, Prince Marcel Amadioha. a former Special Adviser to Governor Uzodimma, Hon. Justus Ojika and other party leaders, who poured encomiums on Governor Hope Uzodimma and called for continued togetherness in Ohaji/Egbema.

Earlier, while welcoming party leaders and members to his house for the meeting, the Zonal Chairman, Barr Kelvin Ugwu highlighted the importance of the meeting, which he said was meant to foster unity in Ohaji/Egbema LGA APC Chapter.

He said that henceforth, no non-party official is entitled to host meetings and make pronunciation about the party, without getting clearance from the leadership of the party.

He warned that such an act won’t be tolerated again.

While recognizing Rt. Hon Goodluck Nanah Opiah as the Apex Leader of the APC in Ohaji/Egbema LGA, the Zonal Chairman admonished members not to engage in acts not in conformity with the desires of the party in Imo State.

ISIEC announces date for Imo council polls

ISIEC

Ahead of the forthcoming local government elections slated for September 21 across the 27 LGAs in the state, the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has assured the residents of Imo State of a free, fair, and peaceful exercise.

The Chairman of the Commission, Charles Ejiogu, gave the assurance while addressing participants during a stakeholders’ meeting on how to achieve a credible election.

Ejiogu said the forthcoming poll will be the fifth time such an exercise has taken place in the state since the re-enthronement of democratic governance in 1999, with previous elections held in 1999, 2004, 2010, and 2018.

The ISIEC boss, while highlighting the importance of the exercise, maintained that the third tier of government remains the bedrock for even development in rural areas and the only source of deepening democratic elements at the grassroots.

He stated that following the law establishing the Commission in 2000, as amended in Law No. 14, ISIEC is empowered with the responsibilities of conducting and supervising free, transparent, and credible local government council elections in the state.

“To this end, ISIEC has scheduled to conduct the much-expected council elections in the 305 Registration Areas/Wards and in all the 4,758 polling units in the 27 Local Government Area Councils of Imo State on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

“Therefore, the Commission is taking this opportunity to assure all critical stakeholders of its preparedness to perform its constitutional duty.

“Today’s stakeholders’ meeting is to release election guidelines and a timetable as part of the activities that will ultimately usher in the emergence of 27 democratically elected Council Chairmen, their Deputies, and 305 Councilors,” he said.

The ISIEC Chairman added that arrangements for the recruitment of ad-hoc personnel are in top gear and that it will include both field and internal ad-hoc personnel.

Talking about security, he stated that the Commission is not oblivious to the imperatives of putting in place water-tight security. He mentioned that they are in touch with heads of security agencies to achieve a hitch-free exercise and will stop at nothing in doing just that, maintaining that adequate logistics and ground power will be mounted as it is key to the successful conduct of the forthcoming council polls.

Chief Ejiogu further emphasized the Commission’s ongoing sensitization and mobilization efforts with critical stakeholders, informing that meetings with traditional rulers, presidents general, political leaders, and other relevant bodies are still on course.

“We are also liaising with other democratic institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and we are satisfied with their level of support so far, even as we look forward to more of such support. The security agencies have also assured us of their readiness to render necessary assistance. The voluntary agencies are not left out in this regard, and we cannot take any of them for granted,” he informed.

He also noted the importance of the media in the forthcoming exercise, emphasizing that the fourth estate of the realm remains sacrosanct stakeholders and established strategic partners in progress.

In a similar vein, the ISIEC boss used the moment to commend the governor for creating the opportunity for the exercise to see the light of day, assuring that he would deliver on the task given to him.

Those present at the meeting included heads of security agencies, sole administrators of the 27 LGAs in the state, political leaders, traditional rulers, presidents general, civil society organizations, market women, youth groups, and religious leaders.

Cholera outbreak: NCDC may declare emergency — DG

  • Some parents prevent children from resuming school
  • We have contingency plan — Lagos govt
  • We’re okay with steps taken by govt — NUT

THE Director- General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris, yesterday, disclosed that the centre is considering declaring a state of emergency on cholera if cases recorded go beyond manageable threshold.

Olajide said this during the Adetokunbo Alakija Memorial Travel Medicine Lecture held at Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, orgainised by the Nigerian Society of Travel Medicine.

The NCDC boss insisted that based on the data that would be obtained from all the partners involved in the assessment, “if they look at the data and they decide that the situation has gone beyond a particular threshold, then we call it an emergency situation.”

He said: “So when they come, when they bring the data, if it has gone beyond a particular threshold, we declare an emergency.

“We have been tracking cholera cases and we are documenting them. For the last two or three weeks, the incidence shot up, with a rising number of deaths and that is why we started investigating and this is where Lagos State came in.”

He, however, warned that prevention and preparation were key to tackling such a disease outbreak.

“We must prepare; prevention means to create the facilities that you will need, the isolation centres, and look at the human resources you have.”

Also speaking, the Special Adviser on Health to the Lagos State governor, Kemi Ogunyemi, said cholera had much to do with the environment and the Ministry of Health had to work with environmental agencies to address the menace.

Ogunyemi said: “It’s all about the environment, it’s about water, it’s about what you eat, it’s about people defecating, and all that is flushed into the drainage system. It’s not just the Ministry of Health, we cannot work in isolation, and we are trying our best. We have programmes – the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene known as WASH. We are trying to get clean water into all (areas), we are looking at pipes that are broken, and the things that are not working, etc.”

Some parents prevent children from resuming school.

Meanwhile, some parents, who are concerned about the health of their children, yesterday, prevented their wards from going to school as primary and secondary schools in Lagos State resumed after the mid-term and Sallah break.

Their fear was hinged on the outbreak of Cholera in the state and some parts of the country.
Checks our reporter in some parts of Lagos namely Lagos Island, Ajah area and Alimosho showed that some parents did not feel comfortable with the health situation in their communities and asked their wards to hold on.

This came as the Lagos State government and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, assured that all was well.

A mother, who gave her name as Esther and who resides in Lagos Island, said she would prefer her children resuming classes next week after observing the trend of things.

She said: “My daughter, who attends a secondary school on the Island won’t resume until next week. I am not okay with the situation of things on the Island. Most people lack potable water and the state of hygiene in most places is bad. To worsen the situation, that is a densely populated area. From what the government has even told the public, it is one of the endemic areas of the disease outbreak.”

Echoing the same feeling, another mother, Abike, who lives in the Agbado area of the state, said there was no point rushing her children back to school.

She said: “Now, we have just a few days left in the week and the issue of cholera outbreak has not been curtailed, why the rush to go back to school? Most schools don’t have clean water sources and for the food vendors allowed to sell to the children; one cannot vouch for their cleanliness, though they were screened before being allowed to work as vendors.”

Vanguard, however, observed that at Nurudeen Adewale Primary School, Agbado and nearby Agbado Junior High School, the number of pupils and students who were present in the morning assemblies was not too encouraging.

A Lagos based radio station, Faaji FM, located in the Agbado area of the state, in one of its morning programmes, urged parents and guardians to follow the health guides and tips given by the state government regarding steps to curtail and prevent the spread of the disease.
The presenter further advised parents to ensure they prepare the food items and the water their children would take to school.

This is to avoid buying food items from unwholesome sources.

No cause for alarm—Commissioner

When contacted, the Commissioner for Basic Education, Lagos State, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun said the resumption of pupils and students went well.

Alli-Balogun said: “Yes, all primary and secondary schools in Lagos State resumed from their break today (Wednesday). Everything went well. We have met with officials of the Ministry of Health and there is no cause for alarm. We are prepared for any eventuality and so far, there has been none.

“It was just a matter of activating all the health measures we put in place when we had the COVID-19 pandemic and from what we have got as reports, a large number of pupils and students resumed as envisaged. The state government is not relenting in combating the cholera scourge or any other that may arise. Our schools are safe for teaching and learning.”

We’re okay with steps taken by govt —NUT

Also speaking, the chairman of the Lagos State Council of NUT, Mr Hassan Akintoye told Vanguard that NUT is satisfied with the steps so far taken by the government in curbing cholera and preventing it from spreading to schools.

Akinloye said: “The state government has always been proactive in situations like these. We are okay with the steps so far taken by them. They have been up to the task. Regarding the attendance today in our schools, we are okay with it too. The pupils and students have been away for about one and a half weeks. Some students would naturally be tired of staying at home and be eager to resume, while some would not.

“Generally speaking, one can say the attendance was fine from reports from our colleagues in schools. As for the fear being expressed by some parents, they should do away with such.
“Whether at home or in school, everybody including parents, should observe hygienic practices to safeguard their health.”

Why Nigeria’s sending astronaut to space — FG

Nigeria and the Space Exploration and Research Agency, (SERA), from Delaware, USA, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, to send the first Nigerian to space.

Chief Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, said at the signing of the MoU in Abuja yesterday, that human spaceflight was a major aspiration of Nigeria.

“Human spaceflight is not just a random aspiration of our country but a major objective of the Nigeria Space Policy and Programme which was approved by the Federal Executive Council, FEC, in 2001.

“Reviving and implementing all abandoned national plans is a cardinal point of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the administration of President Bola Tinubu. This partnership provides a way of achieving our long-time aspiration as a nation,” he said.

The minister said the slot could be available from now till December, or in 2025, as SERA would still be test-running the platform.

Dr Matthew Adepoju, Director- General of NASRDA, said the cost of sending a Nigerian to space had been fully sponsored by SERA, adding that the event marked the commencement of the agency’s efforts to implement part of its roadmap of having a human spaceflight.

He also said the event was worth celebrating at a time Nigeria was marking the 25 years of its space programme.

“The Human Spaceflight programme is one of the cardinal objectives of National Space Policy and Programme.

“It was with this in mind that we established the Department of Physical and Life Sciences about three years ago to forge this mandate.

“This is also coming as one of our deep space explorations because there are many spinoffs that will come from the collaboration and opportunities opened for Nigerians,” he said.

Mr Joshua Skurla, Co-Founder of SERA, said that 80 per cent of astronauts, globally, had exclusively emanated from three countries.

Skurla noted that Nigeria had a rich history of scientific, technological innovation, adding that SERA was excited to partner with NASRDA to extend the legacy into space and create new opportunities for Nigerian space explorers.

Mr Sam Hutchison, Founder of SERA, said that the application to be in space was open to any Nigerian older than 18 years, in spite of their discipline.

“The Nigerian people will choose the citizen to go to space, the process of application will be open to anybody who is over 18 years, and there are no other qualifications required.

“You will be able to sign up and then encourage others to vote for you; as part of democratic process, the Nigerian people will select four potential astronaut candidates before a final selection process.

Lagos faces cholera surge with 21 deaths, 401 suspected cases

The number of deaths from the cholera outbreak in Lagos on Thursday rose to 21, with 401 suspected cases recorded across the state.

Announcing the development in an update on the disease in Lagos, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi disclosed that the total number of cholera cases has increased to 401 across Lagos, with Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa recording the highest numbers.

Ogunyemi, while providing an update on the outbreak after meeting with members of the Lagos State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC), added that the death toll has also risen to 21, an increase of six from the previously reported 15 fatalities.

She said: “The rise in cases was anticipated following the Ileya festivities, during which large gatherings occurred. She, however, noted that suspected cases are subsiding across LGAs, particularly in previously affected LGAs due to state government interventions and surveillance efforts.

She said the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Health and other sister agencies, is maintaining rigorous surveillance and monitoring of the situation and implementing planned programs and activities to curb the spread.

“The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Environment and its agency, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), continues to collect samples of water sources, food, and beverages to identify the source of contamination. We have also intensified our surveillance activities in communities, particularly in affected local government areas, to address the situation head-on.

“We are also working with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education as well as the Ministry of Tertiary Education to ensure all precautions are taken in our schools to protect children and scholars as they return. Residents must, however, remain vigilant, practice good hand hygiene, and participate in community sanitation activities to stop the spread of cholera,” the Special Adviser stated.

The Special Adviser urged citizens to seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms such as watery diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, general malaise, and fever, stressing that cholera treatment is provided free of charge at all public health facilities.

While noting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains committed to ensuring that residents of Lagos receive quality and affordable health care, the Special Adviser extended the gratitude of the State Government to local, national, and international partners—including UNICEF, WHO, NCDC, NIMR, Red Cross, and others—for their support in combating the outbreak.

“Appreciation is also extended to the dedicated team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab scientists, environmental health officers, Water Corporation officers, surveillance officers, heads of agencies, members of PHEOC, and volunteers who are working around the clock to combat the disease and keep Lagos safe,” she added.

Addressing the representatives of the governor and the media at the Government House gate, spokesman of the protesters, Mr Ben Mmaduagwu said they were on the solidarity march, in support of the laudable International Central Market being attracted to their land at Port Harcourt Road Owerri.

He said that the community unanimously agreed to donate the land to the government for the project, making it clear that some people who protested against the project, the previous day were dissidents.

While promising to relay their solidarity message to the governor, Barrister Agbo advised them not to succumb to provocations which could lead to violence. He urged them not to be afraid, promising that the project will go ahead as planned, with enough security provided to prevent the breakdown of law and order.

What I discussed with South African President during bilateral meeting – Tinubu

Tinubu smiles

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday confirmed his bilateral meeting with the recently inaugurated President of South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Tinubu said their discussions were centred on the economy of the two African countries.

recall that the Nigerian President, on Tuesday departed Lagos State for South Africa, where he attended the swearing-in of President Cyril who was re-elected by Parliament on Friday, June 14, 2024.

Shortly after the inauguration, a video clip was circulated on the social media platforms alleging that Tinubu was snubbed by his South African counterpart.

However, in a post on his official X handle on Thursday, Tinubu countered the report, saying he was warmly welcomed by President Cyril.

According to him, “President Ramaphosa’s warm welcome and dedication to mutual respect and cooperation reflects the depth of our relationship”.
On the bilateral meeting held by both presidents, Tinubu revealed that discussions focused on strengthening cooperation and enhancing the economic ties between Nigeria and South Africa.

“We intend to work together to address our countries’ challenges through robust trade and economic strategies, and I am hopeful that we can lead our nations towards increased prosperity and unity.

ASUU berates FG, laments non-review of workers’ salary after 15 years

ASUU

The Benin Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has lamented the non review of University staff salary after the last exercise that took place 15 years ago.

Zonal ASUU expressed its displeasure while addressing journalists in Benin City on what it tagged :On the unresolved issues between the federal government and ASUU: Government is begging ASUU to go on strike”

Speaking for the union, the Zonal coordinator, Benin Zone of ASUU, Prof. Monday Igbafen said government at all levels are busy reviewing other workers salary while leaving the lecturers salaries the same way it was since when the value of naira to a dollar was N120.

“University teachers in Nigeria have been on the same salary regime since 2009 when the value of naira to a dollar was N120, and when salaries in other sectors have been reviewed twice or more.

“It is better imagined to note that what a Professor at bar earns in today’s Nigeria is about $400 per month which is a scandalous under-valuation of scholars.

“To continue to remain on the same salary regime for 15 years without review is not only wicked and inhuman but also an invitation to resistance/industrial disharmony”, Igbafen said.

Prof. Igbafen, while listing the union’s demands which the federal government has refused to meet, said they have been pushed to the wall, and may likely embark on industrial action.

“Having been irked by the obvious lack of sincerity on the part of federal and state governments to address the issues which have worsened the living and working conditions of academic staff in the public universities, it is sad to note that barely a month after our engagement with the press in DELSU, there is refusal and/or total neglect of our union’s demands and ultimatum by the government, i.e. the government completely turned deaf ears to the contending issues.

“This disposition of government is certainly not a good recipe to the impending paralysis in Nigeria’s public universities.
“It is imperative to point out that the nagging issues between the government and our union in reference revolves round the abysmal failure by the government to satisfactorily implement the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement.

“The resulting issues have been the source of the seemingly unending confrontation between us as a union and the government.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the issues include the stalled renegotiation of 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement; funding for the revitalization of public universities based on the FGN-ASUU MoU of 2021, 2013, and the MoA of 2017; the illegal dissolution of Governing Councils in federal and state universities; withheld salaries in federal and state universities; unpaid salaries of staff on sabbatical, adjunct, etc. due to IPPIS; the non-release of third-party deductions; non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA); proliferation of public universities; non-implementation of the reports of Visitation Panels and the refusal to adopt UTAS in place of IPPIS.

Chief of Army Staff seeks partnership with media to combat Insecurity

Chief of Army Staff, Lagbaja

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has urged media professionals to partner with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to combat insecurity in the country.

Gen. Lagbaja made the call in a keynote address he delivered at the Nigerian Army Civil-Military Cooperation Media Chat, held in Kano, on yesterday.

“I urge you to be committed partners with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies as we collectively unite to combat insecurity in our country, so as to restore peace, stability, and progressive development for this generation and indeed future generations”, he said.

Represented by the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Mayirensa Lander David Saraso, the Chief of Army Staff also solicited the cooperation and understanding of the media to be committed to the ideals of responsible and professional practices by being balanced and objective in their reportage of security matters.

According to him, balanced and objective reporting requires a deliberate effort to ensure that national interest and security are not jeopardised on the basis of press freedom and the urgency to be the first to break the news.

He, therefore, urged media executives and editors to be circumspect in their reportage of issues concerning national security and survival.
Gen. Lagbaja also urged all well-meaning Nigerians to keep faith with the Nigerian Army and continue to support its activities.

“As the Nigerian Army continues to conduct kinetic and non-kinetic operations geared towards the complete elimination of elements and purveyors of insecurity in our beloved country, I urge all well-meaning Nigerians to keep faith with their army and continue to support our activities”, he solicited.

He said the Nigerian Army was fully aware of the intricacies and challenges facing the nation, and that the imperative to address security challenges had led the Army to increase the tempo in various theatres of operations.
“I am pleased to state that the Nigerian Army in collaboration with sister Services and other security agencies has continued to record remarkable successes.

“You may be aware that troops of the Nigerian Army operating with other security agencies have made significant milestones in operations across all theatres within Nigeria.

“Specifically, our gallant troops in the North East have neutralised hundreds of terrorists, including scores of their top commanders, thereby liberating several of their enclaves in the Sambisa forest, Tumbuktu triangle and the Mandara mountains.

“Similar feats have also been achieved in the North West, North Central, South East, South West, and South-South regions of the country. The culminating effects of these operations include the rescue of abducted Nigerians, such as the 350 persons rescued from Sambisa forest last month, the surrender of over 120,000 Boko Haram fighters and their family members in the North East, the desire of over 20,000 Nigerian refugees in Cameroon to return to their ancestral homes in Borno and Adamawa states, and the thwarting or rescue of thousands of kidnapping incidents/victims across the country”, the Chief of Army Staff added.

There is poverty and suffering in the land Tinubu admits

TINUBU

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, admitted that there is poverty and suffering in Nigeria, however, he claimed that Nigerians are not the only ones facing poverty in the world.

Tinubu, while speaking on how to tackle the challenges, said, there has to be a move to eliminate banditry and terrorism so that farmers can return to the farm.

According to a statement released through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the President said this when he received a delegation from the National Assembly who came to felicitate with him on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir.

The delegation was led by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, alongside the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, among others.

According to him, it is imperative for Nigerians to have a change of value system for the nation to make progress.

He said, “Yes, there is poverty; there is suffering in the land. We are not the only people facing such, but we must face our challenges.

“We must find a way to eliminate banditry and terrorism so that farmers can bring out food from the farmland. If you do not have good roads to bring the food to the population, even if you grow the food and you are losing 60-70 per cent to damages, you will pay the price”

He challenged citizens to have a change of mindset about Nigeria if the nation is to overcome its current challenges.

“The need (for some citizens) to change the rent-seeking mindset and become more productive to the economy is a challenge. The need to stop smuggling and all economic sabotage. Why should we have people removing rail tracks and all that, stealing electric cables and sabotaging the economy?

“We must embrace the campaign to change our value system. We must tell our people that the challenge we face is for all of us to change our mindset about our country”, Tinubu stressed.

The President also commended the leadership of the National Assembly for the support extended to his administration, which he said had resulted in some of the important developments recorded by his administration.

He stated, “It is a great pride for me to have the best of partners in the National Assembly. We have to drill down and be all-inclusive in our bid to satisfy our people.

“It is daunting, but we cannot run away from the fact that this country must survive the hardship”

The President acknowledged the challenges and the task ahead, assuring the nation of his unwavering determination to turn things around.

Do you want Tinubu dead –Onanuga tackles Peter Obi over presidential aircraft

Tinubu and Peter Obi

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has tackled Peter Obi over his comments on the proposed purchase of a new presidential aircraft.

It could be recalled that the House of Representatives committee on national security and intelligence asked the federal government to purchase new aircraft for President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima.

The committees recommendation was contained in a report released after an investigation into the status of the aircraft in the presidential air fleet.

But speaking on the development on Monday, Obi, faulted the proposal, saying it highlights the disconnect between the government and the people.

According to Obi, the proposal is unacceptable, adding that there is need for a more compassionate use of resources and prioritising citizens welfare.

Reacting to Obi’s comment in an interview with newsmen, Onanuga said the purchase of another aircraft is a necessity.

Onanuga said the proposed presidential aircraft is a basic thing any sane government will do because it cannot toy with the presidents welfare.

He said, “Does Peter Obi want the President dead? Is that his wish? Does he want him to continue moving around in a rickety plane and die like the VP of Malawi and Iran President? Let him tell us. The plane he used now, I learnt, was bought during (former President) Obasanjos era. That was over 20 years ago and I learnt it was a very small plane.
The plane developed a problem the last time he travelled to Saudi Arabia. The President had to go from there to the UK on a commercial airline. Even those managing them said the aircraft needed to be replaced”, he said.

Nigeria must tackle banditry, terrorism to reduce food price hike Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that Nigeria must find a way to tackle banditry, terrorism and bad roads to address food price hikes.

Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesperson in a statement on Tuesday said President Tinubu made this known when he met with the delegation of the National Assembly in Lagos.

Tinubu stressed that 60-70 percent of food is damaged in Nigeria due to bad roads, banditry and terrorism.

“We must find a way to eliminate banditry and terrorism so that farmers can bring out food from the farmland. If you do not have good roads to bring the food to the population, even if you grow the food and you are losing 60-70 percent to damages, you will pay the price”, he said.

The Presidents comment comes as Nigerians continue to groan over rising food prices.

The National Bureau of Statistics latest Consumer Price Index and inflation report said Nigerias headline and food inflation surged to 33.95 percent and 44.66 per cent in May 2024.

Rivers crisis: Protesting youths pull down Wikes statue

Wike Statue

A statue of the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, was demolished by angry youths in Obi Akpor Local Government Area amidst growing tensions over the tenure of local government chairmen.

The crisis is rooted in a dispute between the camps of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Despite a brief period of calm, the issue of local government chairmens tenure has reignited the conflict.

Governor Fubara recently issued a directive for all 23 local government area (LGA) chairmen, many of whom are loyal to Wike, to vacate their offices due to the expiration of their tenures.

However, the chairmen refused to comply, citing an extension granted by the pro-Wike faction of the Rivers House of Assembly.

The extension was allegedly due to the Fubara administrations failure to conduct local government elections.

In a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, Fubara reinforced his directive, ordering the LGA chairmen to hand over to the Heads of Administration in their respective councils.

Following the governors directive, large numbers of youths mobilized across the state, targeting LGA secretariats.

In Obi Akpor, where Wike had previously served as chairman for two terms, some youths took their protest further by demolishing a statue erected in his honour. Amid chants of No more Wike, the protesters dismantled the statue, with one youth notably removing the hat from the statue and slamming it on the ground.

Security expert urges Uzodimma to resolve Ezeship issues in communities

Security consultant and frontline politician, Chief George Uju Madu has called on Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma to look inwards and take immediate steps to fill vacant Ezeship stools in various communities by issuing Staff of Office and Certificate of Recognition to deserving Eze-elects.

Chief Madu who is a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state, made the call weekend while speaking with newsmen in Owerri, on the current security situation in the state, expressed dismay that nearly 20 autonomous communities presently have no traditional rulers in the state.

He noted with delight that the governor had recorded remarkable success in tackling insecurity in the state but observed that absence of recognized monarchs in several communities was undermining the government’s efforts to achieve total calm.

According to him, more needs to be done in sustaining and consolidating the achievement at the community level as the absence of traditional rulers in some areas will continue to be a clog in the wheel of progress.

He observed that the vacant Ezeship stools in nearly 20 autonomous communities in the state is not a healthy scenario for the attainment of the desired peace, stability and security of all nooks and crannies of the state as envisaged under the ‘Shared Prosperity’ and 3-R mantra of the present administration.

Madu posited that timely recognition and issuance of Staff of Office to cleared and shortlisted Eze designates will minimize tension, bickering, factionalism and protracted tussle occasioned by the vacuum.

“To tackle insecurity and ensure government policies and directives get down to the grassroots, traditional rulers have great roles to play. A community without a monarch is like a flock without shepherd and can hardly move in the right direction.

“I appeal to our Governor to see reason and solve this lingering problem in order to consummate the milestones he achieved in the security sector as well as development of the rural communities,” Madu submitted.

Dangerous to refrigerate cooked food for more than three days –NAFDAC

The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Moji Adeyeye has warned Nigerians against the storage of cooked food in refrigerators for more than three days.

She emphasised the potential risks of storing cooked food for extended periods, which could lead to contamination by disease-causing pathogens, ultimately resulting in foodborne illnesses and even death.

This was made known in a statement released yesterday by the agencys Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola.

The 2024 World Food Safety Day, observed annually on June 7th with the theme Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected, serves to raise awareness and advocate for measures to prevent, detect, and manage public health risks associated with unsafe food practices.

Adeyeye stressed the need for a robust food safety culture throughout the food supply chain to mitigate hazards and risks effectively.

She underscored that food safety is not only essential for public health but also crucial for economic development and food security.

The statement partly read, She however, urged Nigerians to refrain from storing cooked food in the refrigerator for more than three days, warning that cooked food stored in the refrigerator for days is susceptible to contamination by disease-causing pathogens, key agents of foodborne diseases that can lead to death.

According to global health statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 600 million people worldwide fall ill each year due to consuming contaminated food, resulting in approximately 420,000 deaths annually.

This widespread issue also imposed significant economic burdens, with an estimated $110 billion lost annually in productivity and medical expenses in low- and middle-income countries due to unsafe food practices.

Highlighting the collaborative efforts required to address food safety challenges, the Director of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Mrs. Eva Edwards, emphasized the preventability of foodborne diseases through proper food handling and hygiene practices.

Edwards stated, Lets all play our part in promoting the culture of good hygiene practices in our homes, communities, and food establishments. Together, we can ensure a safer and healthier food supply for everyone.

No plan for state of emergency in Kano, Presidency tackles Kwankwaso

Kwankwaso

The Presidency has dismissed allegations from Rabiu Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP), regarding the Federal Governments purported plans to declare a state of emergency in Kano State.

Kwankwaso, speaking during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of 82 kilometres of rural road networks in his hometown, Madobi, accused the federal government of compromising Kano security by its refusal to take away heavy operatives guarding the deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.

He also said the people of Kano would resist any attempt to undermine the constituted authority in the state.

Responding, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga told newsmen that Kwankwansos alarm was a mere rumour.

He said, There is no truth in it. It is a mere rumour. The Federal Government cannot declare any state of emergency in any state without the involvement of the National Assembly. There is no such plan. It is a mere rumour.

The National Assembly is in recess. No president can just wake up and declare a state of emergency in any state.

Also, the Kano state commissioner of police, Ussain Gumel, told newsmen that his men have a duty to protect both emirs and refuted allegations that his men showed bias during the emirate crisis.

“We received about five court orders and forwarded them to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice. We are waiting for his response and directives.
And while awaiting the outcome in court or directives from the AGF, we must protect the contending emirs.

“My appeal to the public is for them to exercise patience and calm while we await the outcome from the relevant authorities”, he added.

Ahead of Imo LGA elections: Ihitte Uboma Youth Vanguard endorses Barr Justice Uhuegbu for chairmanship position

Ihitte Uboma Youth Vanguard

A socio-political group, under the auspices of Ihitte Uboma Youth Vanguard has asked Barr Justice Uhuegbu, a human rights activist, to join the chairmanship race of Ihitte Uboma LGA.

QThe publicity secretary of the group, Comr Ifeanyi Nduka disclosed this, during a press chat with Our Correspondent, at Isiwenke, Ihitte Uboma LGA.

He said that Barr Uhuegbu has so far shown capacity, dedication and commitment in advancing the cause of effective leadership in the country, adding that he is the best option for the Chairmanship seat of the LGA.

Comr Nduka pointed out that Ihitte Uboma is lagging behind in development, due to the failure of successive leaders in the area, adding that the only way, people in the hinterlands would feel the impact of progressive leadership is when individuals with sound credentials, mount the saddle of governance at the Local Government Levels, which according to him, is the panacea to abysmal performance in leadership.

He appealed to Barr Uhuegbu to accept the clarion by joining the Ihitte Uboma chairmanship race.

However, in a swift reaction to the group’s request, Barr Uhuegbu thanked them for finding him worthy to serve the good people of Ihitte Uboma, and promised to respond to their request in due course.
