SERAP urges Tinubu to reverse petrol price hike pending court verdict

SERAP

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has urged President Bola Tinubu to direct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to immediately reverse the second increase in petrol prices in one month, pending the hearing and determination of the suit before the Federal High Court, Abuja challenging the legality of the powers of the NNPCL to increase petrol prices.

According to a statement yesterday by SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation had last month filed a lawsuit against the President and NNPCL over the failure to reverse the unlawful increase in the pump price of petrol, and to probe the allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the NNPCL.

The statement read, The latest increase in petrol prices makes a mockery of the case pending before the Federal High Court, and creates a risk that the course of justice will be seriously impeded or prejudiced in this case.

One of the fundamental principles of the rule of law is that it applies to everyone, including presidents and CEOs of public institutions.

It is in the public interest to keep the streams of justice clear and pure, and to maintain the authority and integrity of the court in the case.

SERAP also said allowing the Federal High Court to hear and determine the case would be entirely consistent with the letter and spirit of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], your oath of office and oft-repeated promises to uphold the rule of law.

The letter, read in part, SERAP notes that since assumption of office in May 2023 you have repeatedly promised, including in your inaugural speech, that Nigeria will be impartially governed according to the Constitution and the rule of law.

Increasing petrol prices while the Federal High Court case is pending would prejudice and undermine the ability of the court to do justice in the case, damage public confidence in the court, prejudice the outcome of the case, as well as impede the course of justice.

We would be grateful if the recommended measures are immediately taken following the receipt and/or publication of this letter, failing which SERAP shall consider contempt proceedings and/or other appropriate legal actions to compel your government and NNPCL to comply with our request in the public interest.

SERAP also warned that if not immediately reversed, the latest increase in petrol prices would seriously undermine the integrity of the Nigerian Constitution and have serious consequences for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged Nigerians and the public interest.

Protecting the right to a judicial recourse and due administration of justice is of utmost importance, being the cornerstone of an ordered society.

The only way in which SERAP can have a fair and effective access to justice in this matter is to allow the court to decide, one way or the other, on the merits of the case before it.

Reversing the latest increase in petrol prices would allow the court to render a decision on the central issues in the case, and protect the applicants rights and interests.

The latest increase in petrol prices while the Federal High Court case is pending constitutes an interference with the right of SERAP to fairly and effectively pursue a judicial challenge to the decision by your government and NNPCL regarding the first increase in petrol prices the statement added.

SERAP noted that according to its information, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited recently increased the price of premium motor spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, across its retail outlets, saying that the retail price of petrol was increased from N897 to N1,030 per litre.

This is the second increase in one month, and followed the increase in September from N600 to N855 per litre, and in some instances above N900 per litre.

The two increases followed a scarcity caused by the reported refusal by suppliers to import petroleum products for the NNPCL over a $6 billion debt.

According to the recently published 2020 audited report by the Auditor General of the Federation (AGF), the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) failed to remit over USD$2 billion and N164 billion of oil revenues into the Federation Account. The Auditor-General fears that the money may have been diverted into private pockets.

The NNPCL reportedly failed and/or refused to remit N151,121,999,966. The NNPCL, without any justification, deducted the money from the oil royalties assessed for 2020 by the Department of Petroleum Resources, now Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

It added that the NNPCL has failed to account for the missing public funds, pointing out that the Auditor-General wants the money recovered and remitted into the Federation Account.

The NNPCL also failed to remit USD$19,774,488.15 collected as government revenue to the Federation Account. The Auditor-General wants the NNPCL to account for the money, recover and remit it into the Federation Account, and to hand over those suspected to be involved to the ICPC and the EFCC.

The Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) Ltd also reportedly failed to account for USD$2,021,411,877.47 and N13,313,565,786.49 of royalties collected from crude oil and gas sales and gas flare.

The Auditor-General wants the public funds fully recovered and remitted into the Federation Account and for those suspected to be responsible for the missing public funds to be handed over to the ICPC and the EFCC.

PDP vows to take over power in 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has commenced the conduct of its state congress in Kano, vowing to bounce back strongly and form a formidable party to reclaim power in 2027.

The party’s Northwest Zonal National Vice Chairman, Sen. Bello Hayyatu Gwarzo, who stated this during the delegate congress in Kano on Saturday, said the party will triumph in the 2027 elections.

Gwarzo, in high spirits, expressed confidence that the party would make a good outing across the country in the 2027 general elections.

We are trying to create a solid foundation that will revive the party in the state and across the nation.

We want to ensure all hands are on deck, which will guarantee our victory in the forthcoming elections to deliver the dividend of democracy to the people as evident from our records, he said.

According to him, the PDP in the state remains one formidable force, noting that there was no faction in the party.

Also speaking, the chairman electoral panel, Halilu Mazagani, delegated by the party’s national headquarters to observe the congress, applauded the party officials at the state level for a job well done.

He said the smooth conduct of the congress is an indication that the PDP will soon settle existing differences between some persons within the party for a better and stronger opposition that can defeat the ruling party.

I assure you today that we are working hard to ensure unity and we are mobilizing like never before to ensure our success in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

I can confidently say the people will vote for us. So it is now left to us to present them with credible candidates as we have done before and we wish to improve on that, Mazagani said.

On his part, an elder of the party, Dr. Umar Musa who represented the former governor of the State, Sen. Ibrahim Shekarau said the party will produce a winning team that can match in any election.

Alleged fraud: US govt files lawsuit against Air Peace CEO, Onyema

The United States government has charged the founder and Chief Executive Officer, CEO of Air Peace, a Nigerian airline, Allen Onyema with obstruction of justice in a new indictment.

Onyema was accused of submitting false documents to halt an investigation into earlier bank fraud and money laundering charges.

The airlines Chief of Administration and Finance, Ejiroghene Eghagha, is also charged for his role in the obstruction and previous bank fraud schemes.

The US Attorneys Office, Northern District of Georgia in a statement on Friday said on 8 October 2024, they were both charged in a superseding indictment alleging an additional count of obstruction of justice and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice.

The U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan said the Air Peace CEO allegedly used his airline as a front for fraudulent activities targeting the U.S. banking system.

Buchanan also alleged that when the investigation into the actions intensified, both Onyema and Eghagha reportedly tried to obstruct justice by presenting falsified documents.

After allegedly using his airline company as a cover to commit fraud on the United States banking system, Onyema, along with his co-defendant, allegedly committed additional crimes of fraud in a failed attempt to derail the governments investigation of his conduct,

The diligence of our federal investigative partners revealed the defendants alleged obstruction scheme, making it possible for the defendants to be held accountable for their aggravated conduct of attempting to impede a federal investigation, he said.

Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, DEA, Atlanta Division, Robert J. Murphy, stressed the DEAs commitment to holding individuals accountable for fraud and money laundering.

Internal Revenue Service, IRS, Special Agent Lisa Fontanette added that the superseding indictment reflects the persistent efforts of law enforcement to dismantle criminal threats, especially through task forces like the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF).

The charges stem from Onyemas alleged involvement in a scheme where, between 2010 and 2018, he transferred over $44.9 million from foreign sources into his U.S. bank accounts.

Beginning in May 2016, he and Eghagha reportedly used falsified export letters of credit to transfer more than $20 million into Onyemas U.S. accounts under the guise of purchasing Boeing 737 aircraft for Air Peace.

However, the documents supporting the transactions were allegedly fake and Springfield Aviation, the company involved, was reportedly owned by Onyema and had no real connection to aviation.

In 2019, when Onyema learnt he was under investigation, he and Eghagha allegedly conspired to submit a backdated contract to U.S. authorities to mislead the investigation and unfreeze bank accounts.

Onyema and Eghagha were first indicted in November 2019 on charges including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, multiple counts of bank fraud, credit application fraud, and money laundering.

The recent indictment adds charges of obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice. The case remains under investigation, and both defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

NBA demands immediate reversal of fuel price hike

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has demanded the immediate reversal of the latest increase in the cost of petroleum products to N1,030.

In a statement by the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN) on Saturday, the association expressed concern that such decisions continue to be made without transparent consultation or dialogue with relevant stakeholders, including civil society and the private sector.

He said, We therefore call on the government to immediately take steps to reverse this increase and urgently implement measures that cushion the effect of rising fuel prices.

This should include investment in local refining capacity, public transportation, reduced taxation of the income of low-income earners, repair of public roads, improved security so farmers can farm and evacuate their farm products, transparent fuel pricing mechanisms, and broader economic policies aimed at reducing poverty and providing sustainable solutions to Nigerias energy challenges.

Similarly, the Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) has condemned increase in petrol prices, saying it was worsening the economc hardship in the country.

In a statement signed by its President, Dr Stephen Nwala, the forum demanded a reversal to the former price, maintaining that the sudden and steep hike in the cost of petrol had triggered widespread hardship, pushing many citizens further into poverty and creating additional strain on businesses and households across the country.

The timing of this price increase could not be more detrimental as Nigerians are still grappling with the economic fallout from fuel subsidy removal, rising inflation, and the ongoing challenges posed by unemployment and underemployment.

The decision to raise fuel prices at this critical juncture is not only insensitive but also counterproductive to the governments stated goals of economic recovery and poverty alleviation even when the national minimum wage increase is yet to be implemented by both state and federal government.

FOSAD urges the Federal Government to take immediate steps to reverse the fuel price hike and explore alternative measures to address the economic challenges facing the nation.

It is imperative that the government prioritizes the welfare of its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, who are disproportionately affected by such policies, he said.

Dangote Refinery to commence crude oil production Report

Dangote Refinery plans to commence crude oil production, according to S & P Global Commodity Insights.

This is coming amid the persistent feedstock challenges the Nigerian oil firm is facing.

The crude production is expected to start at its two Niger Delta upstream projects in Oil Mining Leases 71 and 72, starting with about 20,000 barrels per day before ramping up further in the first quarter of 2025.

The company source said production at the companys two Niger Delta upstream projects in Oil Mining Leases 71 and 72 would start at around 20,000 b/d, before ramping up further in the first quarter of 2025, the report said.

The Nigerian Government recently confirmed that it has commenced a Naira-for-crude deal with Dangote Refinery.

In line with the deal, the Nigerian Government, through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, will supply crude oil to Dangote Refinery in Naira.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu had directed NNPCL to supply crude in Naira to Dangote Refinery.

The development comes as NNPCL recently increased fuel pump prices to N1030 per liter in Abuja.

70 Nigerians register for evacuation from Lebanon

The Federal Government has intensified efforts to rescue Nigerians currently trapped in Lebanon as the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah worsens as it was learned.

This came as the President of the Nigerian Community in Lebanon, Mr. Roland Aigbovbiosa, said more than 70 Nigerians have so far registered for evacuation from the crisis-ridden country.

The current crisis began in September when Iran launched a barrage of 180 ballistic missiles toward Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Iran-backed militant leaders.

The missile attack, which targeted key sites in Israel, sent Israelis scrambling to shelters, raising concerns about a wider regional conflict.

Although the Israeli Defense Forces managed to intercept the missiles, the incident has heightened instability in the region, including Lebanon, which borders Israel and faces its own internal security challenges.

In response to the situation, the Federal Government, through the Special Assistant to the Nigerian President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, issued an alert on October 1 via X.com, urging all Nigerians in Lebanon to get in touch with the Nigerian Embassy in Beirut for profiling, documentation, and potential evacuation.

The government activated its emergency evacuation protocols through the agencies working closely with the Nigerian mission in Lebanon, especially the National Emergency Management Agency, among others.

Some of the trapped Nigerians in the country cried out to the Federal Government last week for quick intervention as the conflict deepened in Beirut, the Lebanese capital.

Speaking with our correspondent, the spokesperson for NEMA, Manzo Ezekiel, said the agencies and the coordinating Ministry of Foreign Affairs were already intensifying efforts on the evacuation plans.

He noted that the evacuation plans were to give a sense of national responsibility given the critical conditions of some Nigerians in the troubled country.

That is the whole sense of it. If it happens, fine. If it doesnt happen, fine. At least, it shows that the government did not fold its arms while its citizens were in a crisis zone.

But as I speak to you, all the preparations are still on the table. So that is just the idea, he stated.

On how far the registration for evacuation had gone, the President of the Nigerian Community said on Saturday, Last week, the number was around 30. But since then, Nigerians have been coming almost every day, so we now have a little above 70.

The issue we are facing now is knowing how soon the Federal Government will commence the evacuation.

Explaining why the government should kick off the evacuation exercise immediately, he said, Personally, I oppose the idea of waiting for the number to increase to either 400 or 500 before coming to evacuate the people, because even the life of a single person matters.

I believe that whatever we have is enough for the evacuation to begin because the people who have indicated an interest in going back home are suffering.

Don’t incite Nigerians against Tinubu govt APC chieftain warns politicians

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has appealed to politicians to guard against utterances that could incite Nigerians into violent protest against the government.

Oyintiloye said that any politician who might be hiding under the current ongoing hardship in the country to incite the masses against the constituted authorities should be regarded as an enemy of the state.

The APC chieftain made the remarks while speaking with journalists yesterday in Osogbo.

Oyintiloye said that what President Bola Tinubu needed at this period is prayers and the support of all Nigerians to enable him stabilise the economy for the benefit of the masses.

He said that the economic challenges the country is passing through required the understanding and collaborative approach towards finding lasting solutions to them and not inciting comment that could lead to public unrest.

Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, who noted that the president was doing everything humanly possible to turn the economy around, said it would amount to being unpatriotic for anyone, no matter how highly placed to incite the masses into a protest.

He called on the security agencies to be alert and ensure that anyone who is attempting to incite the masses to cause havoc in the country is made to face the law.

There is no doubt that the economy is not in its best shape, but this is just temporary.

The president is working assiduously to ensure that the economy is brought back to shape for Nigerians to enjoy.

While we are waiting for that, I do not think inciting the masses against the government is the best way to go.

I will strongly advise those politicians who are calling people to protest against the government to desist or be ready to face the law, he said.

Edo: I wont challenge election result Akpata

The Labour Party, LP, governorship candidate in the last month Edo State gubernatorial election, Olumide Akpata, has said that he will not challenge the result of the election.

It would be recalled that Akpata emerged third with 22, 763 votes in the election.

He lost to the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Monday Okpebholo, who raked in 291,667 votes to defeat PDPs Asue Ighodalo, who came second with 247,274 votes.

Three weeks after the contest, Akpata said that he wouldnt approach the Tribunal, despite citing irregularities and electoral malpractice in the exercise.

My decision not to contest the election results at the tribunal is not an indication of compromise; rather, it is a strategic move aimed at redirecting our energies towards systemic changes that our democracy desperately needs.

This moment calls for a paradigm shift in our approach to electoral reform. We cannot continue to operate within a system that incentivises manipulation and disenfranchisement, he said.

FEDERAL HIGH COURT ABUJA JUDGEMENT – IMO STATE VEHICLE INSPECTION UNIT NOT AFFECTED

The attention of the Imo State Ministry of Transport has been drawn to a Federal High Court judgment in Abuja barring the Directorate of Vehicle Inspection Services (VIO) in the FCT from further stopping vehicles on the road, impounding or confiscating vehicles, and imposing fines on traffic violators.

The Ministry has been inundated with calls and inquiries on whether the VIO in Imo State is affected by the judgment and its implication for the operations of the VIO in the State.

It is therefore imperative to state as follows:

1. The judgement in question was delivered in Abuja and therefore lacks jurisdictional effect in Imo State.

2. The motif of the judgment of FHC/ABJ/CS/1695/2023 was the lack of an operational law on which basis the VIO operated in the Federal Capital Territory.

3) The Vehicle Inspection Unit in Imo State operates under the statutory mandate of the Ministry of Transport and the Imo State Transport Administration Law No.14 2011 as a Unit in the Ministry of Transport Imo State.

The law defined what constitutes Traffic Violations and Offences. It also stipulates penalties and fines payable in the case of violations as a deterrent to ensure the safety of our roads and road users.

3. In view of the above, the judgement of the Federal High Court Abuja on VIO operations is not applicable in Imo State and of no effect.

Imolites and indeed all road users in the State are advised to continue to abide by the extant State laws governing Traffic Management in the State to ensure safety on our roads as we strive to improve the experience of road users in our dear State, Imo.

Hon. Dr. (Sir) Chika Benson Abazu

Nigeria’s economic future lies in skills, not oil, says Uzodimma

Governor Uzodimma

As Nigeria’s oil sector continues to experience volatility in both production and prices, the government and the citizens have been advised to look elsewhere for the country’s economic future.

Specifically, they have been encouraged to focus more on human capital development, especially those with the requisite skills as an alternative to oil in the economic evolution of Nigeria.

That was the submission of Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State who insisted that in the post oil era, it is only skilled manpower that will come to the rescue and growth of the economy.

Speaking at Ilorin, Kwara State at the maiden Convocation Lecture of OJAJA University, weekend, Uzodimma said the time has come for the nation to invest in human capital development, particularly the growing of skills so as not to be caught unawares in its developmental initiatives.

Senator Uzodimma in his Convocation Lecture titled: THE ROLE OF PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES IN GROWING SKILLED LABOUR FOR A RESILIENT ECONOMY, noted that universities are the change agents to achieve the purpose, and canvassed support for them in terms of investments.

According to him, as “the nation strives for economic resilience in this era of globalisation, the role of education, particularly higher education, becomes crucial.”

He singled out private universities as the potential drivers of the new economic order, saying that they “have emerged as vital contributors to the production of a skilled workforce that can adapt to the evolving demands of the economy.”

The Governor argued that given the structure of the country’s economy, with services contributing half of the GDP, private universities have a unique opportunity and responsibility to lead the growing of skills in Nigeria.

“Private universities which are not usually encumbered by some of the constraints faced by public institutions, have the opportunity to be bold and pragmatic in their approach. They can experiment with new teaching methodology, integrate inter disciplinary studies and create learning experiences that transcend traditional academic boundaries, ” he submitted.

He was confident that the private universities, apart from emerging leaders in the growing of skills for the economy, will become the base upon which the future will be built.

Uzodimma declared: “Looking to the future , I see immense potentials in private universities. I see them producing graduates who are not just employees but innovators and entrepreneurs. I see them contributing to a knowledge economy that can compete on the global stage. I see them playing a major role in making Nigeria a hub for skilled talent in Africa and beyond.”

He said for that envisaged future to emerge from the private universities, it required strategic planning and unwavering commitment from diverse stakeholders, including the government.

Governor Uzodimma canvassed collaboration among the stakeholders for the support of private universities to enable them to play the intercessory role in the growing of skills and enhanced economy.

He added: “The future of our great nation lies not in the oil beneath our soil but in the potent skills and knowledge up our skills. Private universities have a pivotal role to play in incubating these potentials.”

Turning to the graduates of OJAJA University, he described them as pacesetters who have the potential of emerging presidents, governors, and Senators in the future. He congratulated them for their academic accomplishments.

He also commended the Visitor, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi Adeyeye, Ojaja II whom he described as a nationalist and foremost traditional ruler, whose contributions to the education sector and the economy in general remain unprecedented.

Eastern Waste Management seals business premises over waste disposal levies

By Jennifer John…

The Eastern Waste Management Company, in charge of waste disposal and environmental cleanliness of Imo State, Friday sealed some business premises for defaulting in the payment of their waste disposal levies, in what the company described as “business disruption exercise”.

Fielding questions from newsmen at the end of the exercise, the Deputy Managing Director of the company, Mr Agbi Isimemenjoku Uche said they have been servicing the establishments, by taking and disposing their wastes and have served them their bills since July and August, but most of them have refused to pay.

He said, as a private company, if the establishments fail to pay, “it makes it difficult and almost impossible for us to do our job. So the only way for us to get them to pay is to do what the law empowers us to do, which is to embark on business disruption exercise.

“We embarked on this measure, because we have written them more than once. We first gave them their demand notices and then we sent them a warning letter, to inform them that they were defaulting.

He said a grace period of about three months was given to the establishments before the enforcement exercise

Mr Agbi however expressed optimism that the action will compel establishments in the state to pay their waste management bills promptly.

He disclosed that on the first day of the business disruption exercise, they focused on the hospitality industries, banks, supermarkets and restaurants.

He also used the opportunity to address the issue of waste disposal buckets for commercial vehicles which he said is the only means for commercial drivers to pay their waste disposal levy, saying that the company has been urging the drivers to buy the buckets since June 2024.

On the success of the business disruption exercise, the Deputy Managing Director, disclosed that some establishments complied and paid their levy on the spot, while some made commitment to pay within few days.

He urged all establishments to pay their levies, to the company, to enable it succeed in the task of keeping Imo environment clean and friendly.

PDP crisis: Party summons emergency meeting Tuesday

As the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party persists, the Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has charged the factional acting National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, to revert to the status quo.

A senior party member informed our reporter that the PDP Governors Forum has called for an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss various concerns regarding the partys future.

The source, who wished to remain anonymous due to not being authorised to comment, also revealed that PDP stakeholders were considering the establishment of a caretaker committee to guide the party toward a National Convention to elect a new National Working Committee.

It would be recalled that, since becoming the acting National Chairman following Senator Iyorchia Ayus court removal, Damagum has faced increasing criticism from party leaders over the ongoing crisis in the PDP, resulting in calls for his resignation.

Damagums indecisiveness has contributed to the tense political situation in Rivers State between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

On Friday, in a surprising turn of events, Damagums faction of the NWC, through the partys National Director of Publicity, Chinwe Nnorom, announced the suspension of National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN) for alleged insubordination and anti party.

Shortly after, a statement signed by Ologunagba indicated that the NWC had suspended Damagum and National Secretary, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu for alleged disloyalty to the PDP, appointing National Treasurer Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the acting National Chairman.
The source, who was in the meeting between the Bauchi Governor and Damagums faction of the NWC reported that the chairman of the PDP governors Forum urged for calm.

He stated, Governor Bala Mohammed is worried about the situation. During his meeting with Damagums team on Friday, he welcomed them and called for calm. The governor urged them to restore the status quo to keep the NWC unified and allow the NEC to address the issues at its next meeting.

To tackle these concerns, I understand that the governors have called an emergency meeting for Monday. Some stakeholders are discussing the possibility of appointing a new caretaker committee to manage the partys affairs and organize an elective national convention in 2025 to usher in new NWC.

These stakeholders believe that reconciliation efforts will not lead to the current NWC members collaborating for the partys benefit. However, they are also cautious due to the ongoing litigation surrounding the Damagum and NWC situation. Therefore, the governors will convene to consider all these issues.

Attempts to reach the Director General of the PDP Governors Forum, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo and the acting National Publicity Secretary of Damagums NWC, Ibrahim Abbdullahi for a response were unsuccessful. They did not answer our correspondents calls or reply to text messages.

In a related development, in anticipation of the PDP 99th National Executive Committee meeting on October 24th, party members are calling for significant actions to realign the PDP.

The former National Vice Chairman for the South-West of the Peoples Democratic Party, Eddy Olafeso, emphasized that the future of the PDP is a shared responsibility.

Olafeso in an exclusive interview with, stressed the importance of the NEC fostering unity among party members.

He stated, The future of this party is a collective responsibility that requires the commitment of all members. I expect the NEC to play a crucial role in uniting everyone and fostering collaboration. By working together, we can create a stronger foundation for the PDP.

It is essential for the NEC to continue building a formidable party that is well-prepared for future challenges. Through collective efforts, we can ensure the PDP remains a powerful force in politics.

The PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, expressed his hope that NEC members will engage in a moment of truth during the upcoming meeting.

In an interview with our correspondent, Osadolor shared his optimism that the leadership and discipline challenges facing the PDP will be resolved on October 24th.

Osadolor stated, Well, from the NEC, I expect a more united response to some of the issues. I also expect that some hard truths will be told in the meeting, and the leaders of the party will ensure that the PDP comes out better and stronger after we resolve all internal issues that are causing concern.

I also believe that the issues of leadership and discipline will be addressed by this NEC, as the committee tasked with some of these responsibilities will provide a report that will enable the NEC to take decisive actions.

Once all these are accomplished, I believe that lasting peace will emerge from this frank and robust discussion.

Price of eggs to hit N‎10,000 per crate, say poultry farmers

The Poultry Association of Nigeria has warned that if urgent steps are not taken to support poultry farmers, prices of eggs may increase from the current N5,500 to N10,000 per crate.

The association attributed the rising cost of the protein to the high cost of transportation as a result of fuel subsidy removal as well as indiscriminate increase in prices of feed by the millers.

The Secretary of PAN, FCT Chapter Musa Hakeem said this at a press briefing to commemorate World Egg Day on Saturday in Abuja.

Hakeem said the Federal Government must as a matter of urgency declare a State of emergency on Egg production in the country, given the serious decline in protein intake, saying Nigerians can not afford to depend on the importation of eggs.

He pointed out, If we should go by the proportional increase in the prices of these factors mentioned earlier, we will be buying eggs at N10,000 per create, but because we wanted to be compassionate, coupled with the important of eggs for health, we left the price at the current price of N5,500.

Hakeem warned that the prices of the protein may change soon to N6000 going by the increasing prices of poultry feed.

He said, To the best of my knowledge, the last time we received any grains intervention from the government was three years ago saying other respite by the government to cushion the high prices of food are only read on the pages of the newspaper.

He called on the government to ensure that they carry PAN along in their intervention activities as they have the data of all the poultry farmers in the FCT.

He lamented that the government is not paying the required attention to the poultry subsector as it has been neglected over time, saying business owners have been operating in their own volition and hoped that the industry does not crash.

The Chief Executive Officer of Pest Agro Dealers, Jude Arikogu, lamented the indiscriminate increase in prices of feed by millers and also the low measurement of the feeds saying, a 25kg bag of feed is hardly up to 23kg when put on our scale.

Arikogu also lamented that poultry farmers are unable to raise finance from the banks as banks are not willing to finance them.

The Ex officio officer of the association at the national level, Ibrahim Lamidi, said the business environment is not favourable to them as they are only trying to ensure Nigerians have eggs on the table.

He encouraged Nigeria to always eat eggs in place of meat, saying eggs are more proteinous and cheaper.

Bandits attack hometown of ex-Army spokesman, leaving six dead

Bandits

A tragic incident unfolded in Kukasheka, Katsina State, the hometown of former army spokesman Brigadier-General Sani Kukasheka, as armed bandits launched a violent attack late Sunday night.

The assault, which occurred around 10 PM, resulted in the death of six individuals, including Kukasheka’s younger brother.

In an interview with newsmen, Brigadier-General Kukasheka said he did not perceive the attack as a personal assault despite the loss of his sibling.

The attack claimed the lives of four individuals instantly, with two more succumbing to their injuries while receiving medical treatment.

The brutality of the assault has left the community reeling, as most of the victims were family men with numerous dependants.

Adding to the distress of the incident, the wife of the chief imam of Kukasheka was kidnapped during the assault, leaving residents and local authorities in shock over the increasing insecurity in the region.

Speaking on the incident, Kukasheka said, “You can see the humanitarian crisis this attack has caused. My brother had a wife and two children and one young boy was sent on an errand by his mother. Other victims were breadwinners of their families. One of them was catering for over 30 people.

“This is not the first attack that affected my immediate family. My wife’s elder brother was killed next to my house. My sister was once abducted in a neighbouring village and my mother-in-law was kidnapped; she spent 17 days in captivity close to Eid el Kabir.

“It is not a personal thing. Although I don’t know their motives, I see it as a general problem. Anyone living around this area is vulnerable, especially in Kankara. All we need to do is intensify intelligence and information gathering about them.”

Four killed as gunmen invade mining site

In a tragic incident, four young people were killed late Friday night when gunmen attacked a mining site in Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State.

It was gathered that the attack occurred around 9 pm in the Batura community, where the victims were reportedly working at the time.

President of the Butura Youth Movement, Sabastine Magit, confirmed the assault in a statement on Saturday, revealing that five other people sustained injuries during the attack.

The youth leader identified the victims as Bwefuk Musa, 21; Klingshak Dickson, 21; Promise Joshua, 20; and Nyam Abaka, 20.

According to Magit, this tragic event follows closely after a previous attack in Wumat village, where five members of a family, including a pregnant woman, were killed just days earlier.

The statement read, “In yet another unprovoked assault on members of the Butura community, armed terrorists, speaking the Fulani dialect, opened fire on innocent youths working at a mining site near the villages of Kuba and Maikatako in the Butura district of Bokkos Local Government Area in Plateau State on October 10.

“The attack was carried out at approximately 9pm without any provocation, leading to the death of four innocent people and the injury of five others.

“This attack occurred just four days after a tragic incident in the village of Wumat, where five members of a family, including a pregnant mother, lost their lives.

“Eyewitnesses report that the assailants executed a lightning-fast operation on October 10, fleeing the scene before military personnel stationed at a nearby checkpoint could respond. Tragically, four individuals were killed instantly, and five others sustained injuries. The deceased are: Bwefuk Musa, 21 years; Klingshak Dickson, 21 years; Promise Joshua, 20 years and Nyam Abaka, 20 years.”

The recent attack adds to a growing list of violent incidents in the region, further intensifying fears among local communities about their safety and the need for improved security measures.

Ex-APC Deputy Chair declares Lokpobiri, Lyon’s suspension invalid

A former Deputy Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, Ogeibiri Enkumor, has condemned the recent indefinite suspension of Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, former gubernatorial candidate Chief David Lyon, and others.

The suspension, allegedly for anti-party activities in Ekeremor and Southern Ijaw Local Government Areas, was termed by Enkumor as legally baseless.

In a statement released Saturday, Enkumor condemned the decision, describing it as “null and void” and stating it was rooted in ignorance.

He asserted that no one in the Bayelsa APC currently has the authority to impose suspensions, as the party lacks an active executive structure from state down to ward levels.

Enkumor further emphasized that Lokpobiri remains a committed and esteemed member of the APC, with widespread support among party stakeholders.

He added that Lokpobiri’s strong leadership has earned him steadfast support from notable party figures, including former Senator Degi Eremienyo and former House of Representatives member Israel Sunny-Goli.

Enkumor emphasized that these stakeholders remain aligned with Lokpobiri’s leadership, calling for the suspension to be disregarded as “a contempt of court.”

The statement reads, “My attention has been drawn to the announcement regarding the indefinite suspension of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, Former governorship candidate of our party, Chief David Lyon along with several others, for alleged anti-party activities by the All Progressives Congress in Ekeremor and Southern Ijaw Local Government Areas.

“To clarify, I emphatically and unequivocally state that this purported suspension is entirely null and void, and is an act borne out of sheer ignorance by the individuals behind it. For the record, the Bayelsa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not have an existing executive from the state level down to the ward level across the state.

“This situation arose due to a valid court order issued on January 20, 2023, by Judge L. T. Cocodia of the Yenagoa High Court. The order nullified the congresses of the Wards, Local Government Areas, and the State, held on September 3rd and 4th, and October 16, 2021. The court order also set aside the congresses conducted on the aforementioned dates and granted an order of perpetual injunction restraining anyone from parading themselves as executives of the party.

“To the best of my knowledge, this order has not been vacated by any superior court, leaving one to wonder on what basis anyone would wake up and announce the indefinite suspension of critical stakeholders and respected leaders of the party. In light of the above, the purported suspension constitutes a contempt of court and should be completely disregarded, as one can not place something on nothing.

“The Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil) remains not only a bonafide member of our great party but also a well-respected leader within the party. The same can be said of Chief David Lyon as well as other chieftains listed in the suspension announced.

“The exceptional leadership exhibited by the Honourable Minister of Petroleum Resources for State, Lokpobiri is the reason why all well-meaning stakeholders within the party are solidly behind him. The likes of former Senator Bayelsa East, Sen. Degi Eremienyo, former member, House of Representatives, Brass/Nembe Federal Constituency, HRH. Israel Sunny-Goli and a host of others have shown unwavering support for the leadership of Minister Lokpobiri.”

APC suspends Lokpobiri, Lyon, eight others over anti-party activities

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State has suspended the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri and the party’s 2019 governorship candidate, Chief David Lyon, for alleged anti-party activities.

The party also suspended the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Power, Kharim Kumoko; Bayelsa State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Barrister Peres Biewari; former APC state chairman, Mr Jothan Amos; an ex-officio member of the National Executive Council, Hon. Godbless Diriwari and Southern Ijaw APC Youth Leader, Sabi Morgan.

A party stakeholder, Mr Omiebi Fuoebi, APC Chairman, Ward 3 Southern Ijaw including all ward executive members as well as the APC Ward 4 Southern Ijaw, Mr Claudius Odobu and all the ward executive members, were all suspended by the party.

Briefing journalists separately on Friday in Yenagoa, the Chairman of APC in Ekeremor Local Government Area, Mitin Eniekenemi Senator, flanked by the local government executive members, handed Lokpobiri and Kumoko indefinite suspensions.

Mitin said the action followed a “report of the disciplinary committee set up in accordance with Article 21.3 (i) of our party’s constitution 2022 as amended.”

He accused Lokpobiri and his followers of involvement in anti-party activities since the 2019 governorship election in the state, alleging that the minister’s actions were borne out of his failure to secure the APC ticket.

Specifically, Mitin said Lokpobiri used “his supporters to institute cases in court against the party and also establish a factional state secretariat of the party.”

He further accused the minister that “in the 2023 governorship election in Bayelsa State, he led a group of disgruntled party members to openly support and work for Governor Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party and was compensated by the PDP-led government of Bayelsa State.

Earlier, the APC Chairman, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Mr Ebikazi Gbefa, and the local government executive council members announced the suspension of Chief David Lyon and seven others for alleged anti-party activities.

Gbefa cited Article 21.3(I) of the party’s constitution and accused them of conspiring against the APC candidate in the 2020 Bayelsa Central senatorial bye-election, Mr Abel Ebifemowei.

Gbefa claimed: “Some of them were compensated with contracts and appointments. For example, Barrister Perepuighe Biewari who was Chief David Lyon’s Personal Assistant, was nominated by Chief David Lyon and appointed as the current Commissioner for Lands and Survey in the Douye Diri administration in Bayelsa State.

“As we strive to rebuild the party ahead of 2027, it is our resolve to strengthen the party and build confidence in party grassroots members who believe in and have sacrificed remarkably for the party in the state.”

Meanwhile, chieftains of the APC in Bayelsa State have faulted the suspension of the Lokpobiri and Lyon by the local government chapters chairmen of the party.

Addressing a press conference in Yenagoa on Friday, a chieftain of the APC from Yenagoa LGA, Hon Alex Blankson, said he had filed a case in the state High Court in January 2022, challenging the legitimacy of the congress that produced the current party officials at the state, LGA, and ward levels, which the court upheld his submission.

NGO takes campaign against Gender Based violence to Abia Communities

By Henrietta Ashikodi.

Sanab Development Foundation, a Non-Government Organization passionate about the wellbeing of women and girls is step by step taking campaign on Gender Based Violence (GBV) across Abia states communities, schools and markets.

The NGO last Tuesday organized a stakeholders engagement and capacity building training on violence against women and girls.

Speaking during the stakeholders engagement at Umudike community, Ikwuoma LGA, the first lady of Abia state, Mrs Precilia Otti said she was excited over the development because it was in line with the vision of governor Alex Otti to ensure the protection of women and girls in the state.

Mrs Otti who was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Maureen Ijeoma Aghukwa, frowned at the level of evil happening in the society as she recalled a recent case in the state where a man attempted to pluck out the eye of his wife for suspected ritual purpose. “This awareness and sensitization program is in line with my vision, the state will no longer tolerate gender based violence, we want to bring it to zero level. Men beating their wives will not have a place in this government as I also appeal to women to respect their husbands while talking to them, bearing in mind that men are the heads of their homes”.

Speaking also, the traditional ruler of Umudike Autonomous Community, Eze Ben Oriaku lauded the Foundation for bringing the campaign to his community. He said Umudike is strategic because of the presence of Michael Okpara university of Agriculture in the community.

He reiterated that violence against women and girls are in different forms,

Church embark on road show

It was an electrifying atmosphere last weekend in all major roads of Amaraku in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo state, as members of Camp Of David – Order of The Cherubim and Seraphim Incorporated, Umuorsu, Amaraku, massively indulged in a classical roadshow in preparation for the annual celebration of Saint Michael’s Anniversary globally marked by the organisation.

The roadshow which saw all the participating members of the Church clad in beautifully designed T-shirt took off from the church Headquarters, Umuorsu, to various adjoining major roads of Amaraku city, with the leader and founder, His Most Eminence, Elder Dr. Paul M.C Onyegbula leading.

Speaking to some newsmen immediately after the rally, the Bishop unfolded the title of their exercise as: “The Battle Is Not Mine”.

He added that the title was a biblical derivative signifying the first day God drove Satan away from Heaven because of his rebellious fight with Angel Michael.

He said: ” Lucifer who happens to be one of the leaders to the Arch Angel Organogram was found to be rebellious and the Heavenly Host has to order Arch Angel Michael to fight him and bring him to correction”.

His Eminence therefore stated that it was on that premise that such anniversary was built into the Cherubim calendar, to annually celebrate Saint Michael as one of the Arch Angels that fought the Satan -Lucifer.

He used same interaction to describe the turnout of his members for the organized roadshow as impressive, but posited that it would have been better if the economy of the country had improved, adding that a lot of people who would have willingly loved to attend the programme could not make it due to lack of food, fuel and other economic conditions confronting the country. He stressed that those factors truly affected the turn out of his members, but thanked God for the success of the programme.

On the expectation of experiencing an improved economy in the country shortly, Bishop Onyegbula categorically said that it was not going to improve because of the existing poor system of governance. He opined that it was the sudden removal of the fuel subsidy without any alternative provision that compounded the already retrogressing Nigerian economy. He referred Nigeria as one legged man whose movement was being supported with a crutch and must have to be provided with an alternative instrument before the removal of his only supporting clutch. He said:” the country was already shaking before the subsidy removal and the thing was removed, everything became a fiasco and that led to the fall of the economy. As the prices keep skyrocketing, everything will keep skyrocketing”.

Onyegbula reiterated his wish not to offer any advice to Nigerian leaders because they did not like taking any, noting that they preferred doing things they wished to do. To the led, the Bishop advised them to accept the current economic condition, maintaining that the president had said that he was not going to do anything about it.

He attributed one of the country’s problems to the existence of too many political parties with different labels and exhibiting same attitude in respect to regular issuance of multiple unfulfilled promises to the masses.

Stressing further, the Spiritual David the 2nd advised religious leaders to be mindful of most of their exhibited abnormal activities in their Organisations for their own selfish benefits, describing religion as one of the major problems of the country. He therefore differentiated religion from Christianity, pointing out that while religion depicts man looking for God, Christianity lays emphasis on God looking for man.

Biden, Netanyahu discuss Israeli response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack

The White House said U.S. President Joe Biden held a “direct and productive” phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the first time they had spoken since August.

The highly anticipated call, which lasted for about 30 minutes on Wednesday with Vice President Kamala Harris listening in, “continued discussions” that had been going on at a staff level for more than a week on what Israel’s response should be to Iran’s Oct. 1 airborne assault, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told a news briefing.

“It was 30 minutes long. It was direct. It was productive,” said Jean-Pierre. “They’ve had more than a dozen conversations since Oct. 7th. And I think what you have seen from this administration is the continued support for Israel’s security. You saw that over the past couple of days, obviously, since the — past couple of weeks. When Iran attacked Israel, the president directed his military to protect Israel. He was very proud to be able to do that. And that support continues.”

However, she refused to provide further specifics and the official readout of the call added little more apart from restating the United States’ “ironclad commitment” to Israel’s security and condemning the attack by Iran “unequivocally.”

Biden said last week that he would not conduct negotiations with Israel on what retaliation for the ballistic missile attack might look like in public — but has let it be known he does not want to see Israel strike Iran’s nuclear weapon program or its oil fields.

On the conflict in Lebanon, Biden did stress on the call that he wanted to see a diplomatic deal that would allow displaced Lebanese and Israelis to return to their homes — while also reaffirming Israel’s right to protect its citizens from Hezbollah rocket fire.

He told Netanyahu, however, that harm to civilians must be kept to a minimum, especially in densely populated areas of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and of the “urgent need to renew diplomacy to release hostages” still being held in Hamas, as well as the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Biden emphasized the “imperative to restore access to the north [of the Gaza strip], including by reinvigorating the corridor from Jordan immediately.”

The two leaders agreed to keep in close direct contact in the coming days on a one-to-one basis and via their respective national security teams.

The Israeli side has not issued a readout or made any reference to the phone call.

The New York Times reported that the call was at the insistence of White House officials who wanted a conversation before any Israeli response to the Iranian attack after Jerusalem failed to provide advance notice of its military offensive in Lebanon which they said put the lives of U.S. citizens at risk.

Their main worry, said the NYT, centers on how to prevent an “uncontrolled escalation” of the decades-old shadow war Israel and Iran have been waging after a series of missile strikes against each other — by Iran in April and last week to which Israel has only responded to the former, so far.

Bill to establish Federal University, Okigwe passes 2nd reading

The Senate has passed for second reading, a bill to establish the Federal University of Okigwe, Imo.

This followed the presentation of the general principles.

The Senate has passed for second reading, a bill to establish the Federal University of Okigwe, Imo.

This followed the presentation of the general principles of the bill by the sponsor Sen. Ndubueze Patrick (APC – Imo North) at plenary on Thursday.

Patrick said the bill sought to provide for establishment of Federal University, Okigwe, Imo.

According to him, the school will be saddled with the main function of providing quality education that will train the younger generation in different professional fields both at graduate and post graduate levels

He listed the fields to include agriculture, environmental sciences, epidemiology and virology, robotics and nuclear technology.

The lawmaker said the training of the young Nigerians on the courses would not only reduce unemployment, but also guarantee food security for the host state and the nation at large.

Patrick said the proposed site for the federal university had a first phase built up with structures meant for the unrealised engineering faculty which had been abandoned.

He said the Imo Government had graciously granted approval for all the facilities to be taken over by the proposed federal university.

Patrick said that the state government’s gesture would result in a minimal initial cost outlay to start the institution.

“The location is a large expanse of land in a serene environment on the bank of Imo River; away from the hustle, bustle and noise associated with the city.

“It is therefore suitable for research and learning; the establishment of a Federal University in Okigwe zone in Imo North will come with employment of junior workers from the area.

“This will reduce youth unemployment and bring the incidence of insecurity to a manageable level.”

He said the arable nature of the area would be of immense benefit to the proposed federal university in the area of agricultural research and production.

“The university, if put in place, will complement the inadequate opportunity for university education provided by the few tertiary institutions in the South-East zone.

“It will thus give the south easterners a sense of belonging and enhance national unity, since admission will cut across Nigeria as a whole.’’

According to him, the objectives of the university, among others, include provision of higher education for qualified JAMB candidates who have been repeatedly sitting for the exams due to lack of vacancy for admission.

“Other objectives are provision of relevant professional courses and training research in agriculture, fisheries, environmental sciences and technology and more importantly nuclear technology.

“Also to be provided are cancer and health related studies with well- equipped faculties and departments to give the students required knowledge in the specialised fields,” he said.

He said the establishment of the school would help improve food security considering proximity of the university to Imo River.

He urged lawmakers to support the bill for its second reading.

President of Senate, Godswill Akpabio, shortly after the bill was read the second time, referred it to Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND for further legislative inputs and to be returned to plenary in four weeks.(NAN)

Soludo has not declared interest to contest for second term – Anambra Govt

The Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, has stated that the Governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo has not declared his intention to run for a second term.

Mefor disclosed this while addressing newsmen in his office yesterday.

He, however, stated that even though the governor is yet to declare interest in a second term, he will be persuaded to contest because of his sterling performance.

The Commissioner insisted that if Soludo chooses to contest he would win because he would show the electorates what he has done in the past.

He said, “Soludo has not declared intention to contest for a second term. He is too busy putting policies in the state to develop the state.

“I’m one of those that will persuade him to run, and if he runs, I will ensure that he wins. He has shown himself to be what Anambra people want.

“All the indices favour Soludo. He is from Anambra South, and the zoning formula favours him. The zoning formula we have in Anambra is such that one is entitled to a second term.

“If Soludo contests, I’m sure he will win because he will not be telling anyone that he will do this or do that, he will rather show them what he has done.

“Soludo has the right to contest for a second term. Those who are saying that they will contest against him are the same people who contested against him when he was not a governor and he won them.

“Why do you think that he will not win them again, now that he has evidence of what he has done for Anambra people?

“Soludo has verifiable, tangible achievements in Anambra, and all he needs to do is show Anambra people his scorecard to get reelected for a second term.”

Colombia’s river guardians battle to protect the Atrato amid threats and abandonment

Sediment and pebbles are all that’s left on the earth around much of Bernardino Mosquera’s small riverside community in northwest Colombia’s Choco region.

Just a year ago, healthy shrubs and trees filled this important biodiversity spot teeming with species native to the land. But then illegal miners arrived, using their heavy machinery to dredge the riverbeds for gold.

“It’s just desert here,” said Mosquera. “Illegal mining affects the ecosystem in every way … it leads to degraded land. There are no trees. The water sources are drying up, it’s polluted by mercury.”

Mosquera is a river guardian, a title bestowed upon him and 13 others. The unpaid guardians serve as the eyes and ears of the Atrato River: They liaise with government institutions on environmental and social issues in the face of aggression from armed groups and hope to reverse the devastation they see along the river. But after eight years, they are increasingly disenchanted by the lack of support from institutions and growing threats from armed groups that control the region.

Colombia’s constitutional court declared in 2016 that the Atrato River running alongside this 2,500-person town was so important to life, it would have rights equivalent to a human. The region is home to thousands of species, with 25% of its plant and bird species endemic, according to the United Nations Development Programme. The river’s legal status was a first for Latin America, and when the guardians were established.

“It’s an unbreakable marriage between its inhabitants and the rivers,” Mosquera, 62, said. That’s why we have to defend the Atrato.”

Illegal gold mining has become the fastest-growing criminal economy over the past decade in South America. The boom began in Colombia and Peru and expanded to Ecuador, Venezuela and Brazil.

Paimado, like many towns in the Choco region, is an illegal mining hub firmly in the control of the largest criminal organization in the country, known as Gulf Clan. Early each morning, small wooden boats carry plastic gasoline containers to feed the mining machinery dotted along the Atrato, a river that snakes some 750 kilometers (470 miles) through northern Colombian jungles.

Dozens of illegal mines pepper the river between Mosquera’s home in Paimado, which lies on Rio Quito, the Atrato River’s main tributary, and the state capital Quibdo.

Large wooden rafts propped on stilts reach deep into the riverbed to extract material that is sifted through the machine for gold. Deep inside the banks of the river, another type of mining takes place with heavier machinery. It is here that deforestation is glaringly evident.

Drone footage taken by The Associated Press shows large patches of empty land which stretch long behind the riverbanks.

“Many people think that because it looks very green there is no deforestation,” said river guardian and agronomist Maryuri Mosquera, 42.

High rates of poverty have pushed many into gold mining, work that destroys land and contaminates their river. That destruction then destroys the local economy, making communities even more dependent on mining.

Colombia’s human rights ombudsman’s office said in April the government is failing to protect the river, saying “there is no evidence of any progress” since the river gained personhood. It called on the environment ministry to comply with the 2016 ruling

Death toll in gang attack on Haitian town rises to 115

Relatives carry the coffin of Jean Louis Jeune Gracien, who was killed during an attack by armed gangs, at his funeral in Pont-Sonde, Haiti, on Tuesday.

The death toll in a brutal gang attack last week on a small town in central Haiti has risen to 115, a local official told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The attack on residents of Pont-Sondé on Oct. 3 was one of the biggest massacres that Haiti has seen in recent history.

Myriam Fièvre, mayor of the nearby city of Saint-Marc, said Wednesday that the toll had risen to 115 and would likely keep rising because authorities were still looking for bodies and haven’t been able to access certain areas of the town.

“We are working to make sure that the population is protected,” she said in a phone interview.

The U.N. had previously said that at least 70 people were killed last week when the Gran Grif gang invaded the town in the central Artibonite region.

The victims included babies, young mothers and the elderly, with the gang approaching Pont-Sondé via canoes to catch residents by surprise, according to a local human rights group.

Survivors have questioned why authorities did not do anything to stop the attack since the gang had warned in a video posted on social media that it planned to target Pont-Sondé.

A day after the attack, officials replaced the police commissioner who oversees the Artibonite region, which has seen a surge of gang violence in recent years, with at least 20 criminal groups operating in the area, according to the U.N.

More than 6,200 survivors have fled Pont-Sondé and temporarily settled in the coastal city of Saint-Marc and surrounding areas.

A majority of them are staying with relatives, but more than 750 others have nowhere to go and are sleeping on the floors of a church, a school and a public plaza in Saint-Marc, according to the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration.

As Saint-Marc struggles with the sudden influx of people, Fièvre warned that the Gran Grif gang is infiltrating nearby communities after attacking Pont-Sondé.

Haiti’s National Human Rights Defense Network has said the gang was angry that a local self-defense group was trying to limit gang activity in Pont-Sondé and prevent it from profiting off a makeshift road toll it had recently established nearby.

Gran Grif has about 100 members and has been accused of crimes including murder, rape, robberies and kidnappings. It was formed after former legislator Prophane Victor began arming young men nearly a decade ago to secure his election and control of the area, according to the U.N

Victor and the Gran Grif leader, Luckson Elan, were sanctioned by the U.S. last month. Elan also was sanctioned by the U.N. Security Council, which noted that Gran Grif “is the largest and most powerful” gang in Artibonite, committing nine mass kidnappings from October 2023 to January 2024, including that of 157 people.

Indonesia arrests suspect wanted by China over $14 billion investment scam

Indonesia’s immigration officers on the tourist island of Bali have arrested a Chinese suspect sought by Beijing for helping run over $14 billion investment scam to clients in China, officials said Thursday.

The 39-year-old man, identified only by his initial, LQ, was arrested on Oct. 1, when an immigration auto-gate in Bali’s Ngurah Rai international airport denied him departure for Singapore.

The biometric data in the computer registry at the airport identified him as a suspect wanted by Beijing, which led to his arrest, according to Silmy Karim, the immigration chief at Indonesia’s law and human rights ministry. He had been listed on an Interpol warrant since late September.

The suspect first arrived in Bali from Singapore with a Turkish passport as Joe Lin on Sept. 26, just a day before Interpol released a so-called Red Notice for him, a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to detain or arrest a suspect wanted by a specific country.

Indonesian authorities brought the suspect, wearing a detainee’s orange shirt and a facemask, before reporters to a news conference Thursday in the capital of Jakarta. The suspect did not make any statements and was not asked any questions.

“He was wrong to use Indonesia as a transit country, let alone as a destination country to hide,” Karim said, lauding technological advances and cooperation between immigration and the national police.

Krishna Murti, the chief of the international division of the National Police, said the decision to deport or to extradite the suspect to China will take some time. Indonesia needs to confirm whether he has truly become a Turkish citizen in the meantime or if he used a fake passport to enter Indonesia.

“We have to respect the suspect’s rights,” Murti said, adding that the suspect has not committed any violations inside Indonesia.

The man was named as a suspect by Beijing, which requested the Red Notice from Interpol, after he allegedly collected more than 100 billion Chinese Yuan ($14 billion) from more than 50,000 people in a Ponzi scheme.

Indonesia, an archipelago nation on the crossroads between Asia and the South Pacific, is attractive to local, regional and global organized crime because of its geographical location and its multi-cultural society.

Last month, Indonesia arrested Alice Guo, a fugitive former mayor of a town in the Philippine accused of having links to Chinese criminal syndicates. She has since been deported to the Philippines.

In June, Chaowalit Thongduang, one of Thailand’s most wanted fugitives was escorted back to Thailand on a Thai air force plane after being arrested in Bali following months on the run in connection with several killings and drug trafficking charges in his homeland.

Hurricane Milton shreds roof off stadium used as shelter for first responders in Florida

Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida late Wednesday, tearing off the roof of Tropicana Field stadium in St. Petersburg, which was being used as a shelter for first responders.

Videos of the Category 3 storm’s path of destruction showed section after section of the stadium’s domed roof, constructed of translucent, Teflon-coated fiberglass, being shredded into pieces by the up to 101 mph wind gusts. According to the Tampa Bay Rays’ 2024 media guide, the roof was built to withstand 115 mph winds.

Footage reportedly taken by security personnel inside the facility captured pieces of the roof draped across stadium chairs and some of the thousands of empty cots set up for emergency responders.

In the days leading up to the storm, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) stated that the stadium was being used as a 10,000-person base camp to “support ongoing debris operations and post-landfall responders.”

According to officials, no injuries were reported at the stadium.

The city stated, “Late Wednesday night, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue has received two critical reports of incidents in downtown St. Pete: a crane collapse at the 400 Central building construction site and roof damage at Tropicana Field. No injuries have been reported in either incident at this time.”

“The public is urged to continue to shelter in place and avoid both areas until further notice.”

St. Petersburg also sustained a water main break that caused two sewer plants to be taken offline and a citywide drinking water alert to be issued. The sewer plants were brought back online in the morning.

Around 9:00 a.m. local time, the city announced that crews were working on recovery efforts, including fixing traffic signals. Local officials encouraged residents to remain off the roads until first responders are able to clear fallen trees and downed power lines.

Analysts with Jeffries Group, an investment banking company, previously reported that Hurricane Milton could cause as much as $245 billion in property damages in the Tampa Bay and Fort Myers areas.

“A 1-in-100-year event is estimated by some to result in $175 billion in losses for landfall in the Tampa region, and $70 billion in losses in the Fort Myers region,” they wrote.

Analysts with Morningstar DBRS, a global credit rating agency, estimated that the storm could result in up to $100 billion in insured losses.

Why I prefer Orisa worship to Christianity, Islam — Wole Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka says he prefers traditional Orisa worshipping to Christianity and Islam because it fascinated him more.

Soyinka said this in an interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo, where he further explained that the depth of faith in Islam and Christianity doesn’t match that of Orisa worshipping for him.

According to him, Orisa worshipping eschews violence and is more creative.

“I was fortunate to be born in two worlds – the Christian world and traditional Orisa worshippers.

My grandfather, until he – poor man – also got converted, was an Orisa person and a chief, and his (grandfather’s) side (of Orisa) fascinated me a lot more.

“For me, it (Orisa worshipping) was more artistic, creative, and also more mysterious. I don’t find much of the mysterious in Christianity and even less in Islam. And that is for a simple reason that I didn’t grow up in a Muslim environment.

“Orisa is open, and very ecumenical and that is why these foreign religions were able to penetrate it and even distort the truth. Because of the generosity of this spirit (Orisa), it is not violent. It is one of those African religions which eschew violence.

“I don’t believe in the Islamic or Christian God and, for the adherents of these religions, if that makes me an atheist, so I say, I am an atheist.

“I insisted that all human beings have a certain spiritual core in their being. I believe myself to be a more spirit-sensitive person,” Wole Soyinka said.

We don’t control Petrol pump price – FG tells Nigerians

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has said the decision of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited to increase the pump price of petrol was not influenced by the Federal Government.

NNPC, on Wednesday, hiked petrol pump prices from N897 per litre to N1,030 in Abuja; from N855 to N998 in Lagos; N1,070 in North-East; N1,025 in other South-West States; N1,045 in South-East and N1,075 in South-South.

Amid widespread outrage over the hike, Idris on Thursday explained that the NNPCL made the decision in response to prevailing circumstances in the energy industry.

The Minister emphasised that the Federal Government can no longer fix prices of petroleum products, in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). He added that with the end of the petrol subsidy regime in May 2023, the NNPCL had only been paying differential to keep the price within the range it had been, but the company said it could no longer absorb the losses.

“The differential you’re seeing is a result of different factors. One of them is the crisis in the Middle East. There’s volatility in the market. Therefore, the prices of petroleum products are going up, consistent with what is happening with other operators in the industry globally. Secondly, NNPC cannot continue to absorb these losses for Nigeria because as a limited liability company, it would be operating at a loss”, he said.

The Minister, however, appealed to Nigerians to understand the situation, assuring that prices would eventually decrease.

PDP Crisis: NEC meeting shouldn’t exceed Oct 24 – Wabara

The Board of Trustee (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently locked in a meeting to discuss the fate of the party and how to resolve the unending crisis within its ranks.

Addressing members before the meeting went into a closed door session, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara said the state of affairs in the party has made it “imperative” that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting holds so that the crisis in the party could be tackled.

Wabara also said the resolution of the crisis triggered by the Congresses across the country was key to settling the disputes in the party.

Before now the NEC meeting had been shifted thrice. NEC was originally slated for August 15, the NWC latter shifted it to September 26, and now to October24.

According to Wabara, “At this critical juncture in our party’s trajectory, I believe it is imperative, and I believe I’m speaking the minds of my colleagues in the board that we convey a meeting of the National Executive Council Committee as scheduled for the 24th of October this year.

“This will allow us to address pressing matters and strategize on the way forward for the PDP, especially as we gear up for future elections and prepare to strengthen our internal structures.

“However, as we continue on this journey, let us remember that the future of our party and indeed our country depends on the unity, integrity and hard work of each of us. The PDP remains the beacon of hope for millions of Nigerians, and it is our duty to ensure that we remain true to the principles upon which this great party was founded. If the PDP Board of Trustees is kicked out of politics of Nigeria, then Nigeria is gone. And of course, what we will have is nothing but anarchy. Like I said earlier, we are almost getting there.”

On the National Reconciliation and Disciplinary committees set up by the party, Wabara said, “We must recognize that the task ahead is significant. I want to remind the committee that they have a huge task ahead, and as the BoT, we will stand ready to lend a hand whenever needed. It is part of our responsibility to foster peace and unity among the members of our party, and we are always available to support these efforts.

“Constitutionality and the rule of law should be the guiding principles of the committee. The committee cannot go wrong with these principle. After all, Honorable Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike has even alluded to this principle recently on National Television. He said that the way forward is to follow the constitution and the rule of law. So, we really thank him for that, and hope that the committee will ride on this and achieve unity in this party.

“I therefore implore any member invited by the committee, including the disciplinary committee, to submit himself or herself, because the party is supreme. We are one family, except we want to completely encourage and support the ruling party to turn Nigeria into a one party state, and I think we are almost there.”

Abia govt moves against alleged extortion of pupils by schools

Gov Otti

The Abia State Government has granted approval to the states Ministry of Education to provide funds and running costs for the offices of Heads of Schools in the state.

This move is intended to address issues of illegal fee collections and alleviate pressure on school heads.

The decision followed allegations that some schools have been collecting illegal fees from pupils in primary and secondary schools.

Addressing journalists at Government House Umuahia after this weeks State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, stated that the move aligns with the ongoing reforms in Abia States education sector.

Hitherto, we used to hear stories of illegal fee collections, possibly due to pressure on the heads of such institutions. So, the state government has taken steps to make this a thing of the past, by providing funds for the heads of primary and secondary schools in the state, Kanu explained.

Kanu also noted that the state government has successfully completed 124 road projects as part of its zero-pothole initiative. This effort is part of the governments commitment to improving road infrastructure, with a principal focus on Aba and Umuahia.

He added that the registration of all commercial vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles operating in the state is ongoing to ensure the security of citizens. He urged affected vehicle owners to comply with the registration process before enforcement begins.
Contributing, the Chairman of the Abia State Unified Task Force and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Azubuike, explained that the registration policy aims to identify the owners or operators of commercial vehicles in Abia, assisting security agents in their work.

Rivers crisis: Fubara reveals cause of fight with Wike

Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State has given an insight into his face-off with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike.

Fubara said his rift with Wike has to do with tussle over power and control in Rivers State.

Wike and Fubara have been at loggerheads since the latter assumed office as governor in 2023.

The cold war between the duo had continued despite President Bola Tinubu and other relevant stakeholders intervention.

But speaking about the crisis on Channels TV Politics Today, Fubara said he had kept all understandings despite the continued face-off.

According to Fubara: We all know the issue. It is very simple. It has to do with the issue of power and control. You have all seen it in this case. If election had been held in Rivers and council chairmen had been inaugurated in a normal situation do we even need anybody to go and obstruct them from entering the Secretariat?

I don’t think there is any understanding we had that I haven’t kept. There is no understanding that we had that I haven’t kept. Like I said I wont want to discuss those issues.

The governor also raised concerns about Tinubu’s intervention in the crisis because only his name was mentioned.

He said: I don’t have any issue with the President intervention. But I am a bit concerned when my name was only mentioned. But like I said since it is coming from the President, I have no comments about it.

This issue is simple. It is as simple as an ABC. Everyone in Nigeria and Rivers knows where this issue is coming from. It is not rocket science. The issue is not Fubara.

Kebbi: Hippo that killed Emirs guard eliminated, shared as meat

No fewer than 40 fishermen have jointly killed a mother hippopotamus that killed Malam Usman Maigadi, a guard at Orchard Farm owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi, on September 22.

It was gathered that the fishermen armed with bows and arrows, killed the hippopotamus in Yauri River, Yauri Local Government Area, on Monday.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of Yauri LGA, Alhaji Abubakar Shuaibu, said the animal was killed by the fishermen following a directive from the Emir of Yauri.

If you could recall, the hippo killed Yauri Emirs guard and another farmer in September.

We cant keep an animal that is killing people anyhow, and all the people it killed were not after the animal, they were doing their own fishing business.

After they killed it, they transported it on a big canoe from the river to the palace of the District Head of Gungu, Alhaji Kasimu Aliyu, amidst applause by a crowd of people.

The brave fishermen subsequently butchered the animal into pieces and shared the meat with the people, Shuaibu said.

Soludo threatens to seal shops of traders observing Monday sit-at-home

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has threatened to seal any shop or plaza closed on Mondays in compliance with the sit-at-home order initially declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Soludo issued the warning during an inspection tour of the Main Market in Onitsha on Monday, where he expressed his displeasure over the large number of locked shops and plazas.

The governor visited the market, known as the largest in West Africa, to observe the level of commercial activity amid the lingering sit-at-home order.

Since IPOB declared the sit-at-home in 2021 to protest the extraordinary rendition of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, the exercise has continued to disrupt business activities in the South East, despite IPOBs official suspension of the order.

Fear of violent enforcement has caused markets, schools, banks, and other businesses to remain closed every Monday.

Soludo, who inspected the market, warned that any trader or business that refuses to open on Mondays would face severe penalties, including the sealing of shops for up to one month.

He stressed that the persistent closure of businesses on Mondays would damage the local economy, as customers might start going to other regions to purchase goods.

He said, I am here to ensure that your shops are open.

From now on, every Monday, the Main Market must be open for business, the governor declared. If you fail to open, your shop will be sealed for one week, and if necessary, for up to one month. When you are ready to open, it must be from Monday through Saturday.

Soludo assured the traders that adequate security measures would be in place to protect them, urging them to resume full commercial activities on Mondays.
