National leaders of organised labour to honour Uzodimma with pacesetter award

…For paying highest minimum wage

National leaders of the organised Labour in Nigeria will on Friday converge in Owerri, the Imo State capital for a grand ceremony, to honour Governor Hope Uzodimma with a PACESETTER AWARD, for being the only governor in the country paying the highest minimum wage.

Whereas the national minimum wage is N70,000, Uzodimma approved and has been paying Imo workers N104,000.

Highly encouraged by this act of magnanimity,  the organised labour,  led by the National Uniion of Local Government Employees (NULGE) decided to appreciate the Imo State Governor with a national honour.

President of Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC) , Comrade Joe Ajaero and the National President of NULGE, Alhaji Comrade Haruna Aliu Kankara will lead other  national labour leaders to hand over the  Pacesetter award to Uzodimma on Friday, March 6th, 2026.

In a statement signed by the chairman of NULGE in Imo state, Comrade Charles O. Okere and the Secretary,  Comrade Jennifer Besong, the union noted with great satisfaction , the improvement of the welfare of Imo workers with the payment of the N104,000 minimum wage by the governor.

NULGE explained that the workers were delighted that Uzodimma chose to pay the minimum wage without persuasion,  or coercion from any quarters, thus, confirming him as workers friendly Governor.

They expressed deep appreciation to the governor for always coming through for workers and hoped that the national Pacesetter award on him by national leaders of organised labour will encourage him to do more for the people of Imo State and Nigeria.

Reacting to the award, the Imo State  Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba described it as a well-deserved award.

“The letter to His Excellency by the organised Labour says it all. He approved the minimum wage of N104,000, as a means of supporting Imo workers,  and  in appreciation of their hardwork,” he disclosed.

Emelumba also said that apart from paying the highest minimum wage in Nigeria, the governor has been paying Imo workers 13th month salaries since he assumed office in 2020, as well as,  discharging his obligations to pensioners.

Uzoagba youths protest against planned extension of PG’s tenure

…Insist community’s Ezeship stool is non rotatory

By Jude Onyenedogha

Youths of Uzoagba Ancient Kingdom Autonomous Community, Tuesday trouped out in their numbers to  protest against the alleged resolution of few members of the community to elongate the tenure of the incumbent President General, Mr Johnson Anosike.

The youths who took their protest march to the Ikeduru Local Government headquarters in Iho and forward to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Owerri were also protesting the alleged plan of Mr Anosike and his group to politicize the traditional stool of the community which they said is hereditary, as Uzoagba is an Ancient Kingdom.

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, such as; We support the Governor’s position: End appointed PGs now, let communities choose their leaders

  • Uzoagba looks forward for an elected P.G, in accordance with the will of the people.
  • Johnson Anosike must go
  • Our tradition is not for sale, among others.

They described Anosike as Government appointed President General and stressed  that Governor Hope Uzodimma had since dissolved all government appointed P.Gs, but instead of Mr Anosike to relinquish the position and give room for an election to be conducted, he had held tight to the position, while making clandestine move to extend his position by an alleged resolution of his cronies.

The youths strongly condemned the plan of the present leadership to throw up the hitherto hereditary Ezeship stool of the community for election, wherein they have started the sale of forms at the rate of five hundred and fifty thousand Naira (N550,000) per form.

At the local government council, in the absence of the Chairman, the Director of Administration and General Services of the council, Mrs Florence Ngorka, who addressed the protesters informed them that the chairman was not on seat, but promised to deliver their protest letter to him, as soon as he comes back, giving them an assurance that the chairman will do whatever is needed to  maintain peace in the community.

While  appreciating the peaceful nature of their protest, Mrs Ngorka urged them to continue being peaceful in the effort to make their voice heard.

Fielding questions from newsmen, the youth President of Uzoagba, Mr Ukaonu Jude Onyekachi said they were simply demanding an election for the position of President General and other executive positions of the community and for the current P.G whose tenure has expired to step aside.

On the issue of traditional rulership, he said the community is an Ancient Kingdom, with hereditary Ezeship that has spanned over 100 years.

According to the youth leader, they were not just raising the alarm to protect the interest of the Crown Prince, whose father, the  late Eze Alphonsus Dabirinze presented to the community as his heir apparent before his demise, but they were also doing it to protect the lives of entire members of the community, as any attempt to take the throne away from where it is rooted will result in a dire calamity for the community.

Ukaonu disclosed that  the most recent attempt to politicize the throne  resulted in calamity for all those who took part in the action, as the man, Engr. Dr. Titus Akakuru who was crowned Eze, though from the same family, died within two years of ascending the throne, after all sorts of mysterious signs and  attacks on him and his entire family, adding that the man who crowned him died the same day he crowned him, while most of the elders who supported the action suffered and were still suffering various kinds of mysterious sicknesses, including blindness.

“Since I was born, even the history on ground, we have Duruaku the 1st, Duruaku the 2nd, Duruaku the 3rd, all from the same family/bloodline. It is now the turn of Tochi Dabirinze to ascend the throne of his fathers as Duruaku the 4th, having been so nominated by his father before his demise.

He called on the Ikeduru Local Government and Imo State Government to step in and ensure that justice is upheld, and the right thing is done, as they don’t want violence, crisis or bloodshed in the community. He said the purported Ezeship Election slated to hold on March 14 by the P.G and his cohorts is a catalyst for crisis and bloodletting in the community.

Also fielding questions from newsmen, Secretary of the youth movement, Engr. Jude Nnoshiri and a member of the body, Mr Ikechukwu Anyanwu corroborated the view of the youth President, adding “we are not happy about what is happening in our community. All these are as a result of greed, the love of money”.

They added that youths of Uzoagba, like other segments of the community were united in kicking against the planned politicisation of the Ezeship stool of the community, as well as the call for an election to fill the vacant seat of President General and other executive positions in the community.

Iran holds mass funeral for 165 schoolgirls killed in US-Israel strike

The Iranian government yesterday held a mass funeral for the 165 schoolgirls and staff killed in a US-Israel strike.

The schoolgirls were killed by the initial strike on Iran on Saturday.

It was earlier reported the strike at a girls’ elementary school in Minab, in the Hormozgan province of Southern Iran.

Five pupils were initially reported killed on Saturday, before the toll began to rise steadily as emergency workers cleared the wreckage and identified more victims.

It was reported that the toll first rose to 95, and then to 118 before rising to over 160.

CNN reported that it geolocated the site of the wreckage and found that the elementary school is 61 meters from an Iranian military base.

It reported that the school appeared to have been formally part of the base but had been separated since at least 2016.

Iran, on Sunday, declared that the “crime against the Iranian People will not go unanswered.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei called the attack on the school “a blatant crime.”

While the Israeli military claimed it was not aware of any Israeli or US attacks in that area, the US Central Command spokesperson Tim Hawkins said that the US is aware of the attack and has begun “looking into them.”

“The protection of civilians is of utmost importance, and we will continue to take all precautions available to minimise the risk of unintended harm,” he said.

The attack on the school has been condemned UNICEF.

FG’s new initiative will tackle education challenges – UBEC

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), has expressed confidence that the new Federal Government initiative, HOPE for Quality Basic Education, will tackle over 10 million out-of-school children, overcrowded classrooms, and other challenges facing the country’s school system.

Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Aisha Garba, made this known in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during a three-day sensitisation workshop for stakeholders from the South South and South East regions yesterday.

Represented by Mr Rasaq Akinyemi, Deputy Executive Secretary (Technical), Garba said the success of the programme depends on “transparency, accountability and collaboration.”

She noted, “We must be candid about the road ahead. Nigeria’s Basic Education faces very stark realities: over 10 million out-of-school children, overcrowded classrooms, and resource disparity that undermines equity.

“HOPE-EDU is our turning point, but its success hinges on transparency, accountability and collaboration.”

Garba explained that the programme focuses on improving learning outcomes, expanding access to quality education, and strengthening education systems.

She added that it would enhance foundational learning, literacy, and numeracy skills, particularly in rural areas.

According to her, HOPE-EDU adopts a performance-based approach, tying funding to measurable results.

“HOPE-EDU is more than a funding mechanism; it is a promise fulfilled. Aligned seamlessly with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, this initiative targets the heart of our challenges in basic education.

“Improving learning outcomes for over 29 million children, empowering 500,000 teachers, constructing 13,000 new classrooms, and bringing back over 1.5 million out-of-school children nationwide,” Garba said.

She urged stakeholders to ensure proper monitoring of the programme to track all funds spent.

“Let us prioritise the most marginalised: the girls, the orphans, the children in conflict zones. Their education is not charity; it is the cornerstone of our democracy and economy,” she added.

The National Coordinator of the programme, Dr Layi Olatawura, called on all state governors to support HOPE-EDU in improving basic education in their states.

He also thanked the Federal Government for an improved budgetary allocation to the education sector in the 2026 budget.

It was earlier reported that the Federal Government had unveiled a $552 million HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All programme aimed at accelerating reforms in Nigeria’s basic education sector.

The initiative, facilitated by the ministry, is designed to improve foundational learning, expand access to quality basic education and strengthen education systems across participating states.

The programme aligns with the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative and is structured to promote measurable, transparent and results-based reforms.

Panel suspends medical director, two doctors over Chimamanda Adichie son’s death

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel has suspended Dr. Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, and two other doctors following findings of medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.

It would be recalled that the tragic death of one of the twin sons of renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Ivara Esege, occurred on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, following a brief illness.

Recounting the heartbreaking incident, Adichie, in a statement on Saturday, January 10, 2026 alleged medical negligence surrounding her son’s death.

She explained that her son was taken to Euracare Hospital in Lagos for an MRI scan and the insertion of a central line after initially developing what they thought was a common cold, which later “turned into a very serious infection.”

During the procedure, Nkanu was sedated but was reportedly not properly monitored after receiving propofol, resulting in complications including loss of responsiveness, seizures, and cardiac arrest.

Adichie stated, “He would be alive today if not for an incident at Euracare Hospital on January 6th,” where he had been taken for medical procedures.

The Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel was subsequently constituted to look into the incident.

Following the panel’s investigation, the medical director of Euracare, Majekodunmi, and the hospital’s anesthesiologist, Dr. Titus Ogundare, as well as the Chief Medical Officer at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital, Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh, were suspended.

The trio will remain barred from practicing medicine in Nigeria until their cases are determined by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal.

In addition, the panel found a prima facie case of professional misconduct against 10 other doctors, including Dr. Adeseye Akinsete, Dr. Chidinma Ohagwu, Dr. Anthony Ajeh, Dr. Amarachi Bayo, Dr. Nkechi Peji, Dr. Olaoye Oludare, Dr. Agaja Oyinkansola, Dr. Patricia Akintan, Dr. Babatunde Bamgboye, and Dr. Raji Faidat.

Eight other doctors were cleared of any wrongdoing.

NCC orders 14-day notice before SIM deactivation

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has mandated telecommunications company to issue a minimum of 14 days’ notice before deactivating inactive SIM cards.

This development is geared towards strengthening consumer protection and fraud prevention in the telecoms sector.

The measure forms part of a broader regulatory review linked to the planned rollout of the Telecoms Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS), a new cross-sector platform aimed at tackling fraud associated with recycled, swapped, or barred mobile numbers.

In a consultation paper published in February 2026 and titled Stakeholders Consultation Process for the Telecoms Identity Risks Management Platform, the Commission proposed amendments to its Quality-of-Service (QoS) Business Rules that would formalise advance notification requirements for both prepaid and post-paid subscribers.

The document, dated February 26, 2026, and published on the industry regulator’s website on Tuesday was signed by the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Dr. Aminu Maida.

It underscored the regulator’s renewed focus on balancing consumer protection with systemic risk management in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving telecommunications landscape.

Under the proposed framework, telecom operators must notify post-paid subscribers of impending churn the deactivation of a line — via an alternative phone number or email at least 14 days before the final action is taken. A similar obligation would apply to prepaid customers.

The proposed rule introduces a layer of transparency into a process that has long been governed by inactivity thresholds.

Currently, under Section 2.3.1 of the QoS Business Rules, a subscriber’s line may be deactivated after six months without a revenue-generating event.

If the inactivity persists for another six months, the number may be permanently withdrawn, except in cases involving network-related faults.

Beyond customer notification, the Commission is also seeking to tighten oversight of the churn process itself.

Operators would be required to submit details of all churned numbers to the Telecoms Identity Risks Management System within seven days of completing the process.

According to the regulator, TIRMS will function as a secure, regulatory-backed platform designed to prevent fraud linked to compromised Mobile Station International Subscriber Directory Numbers (MSISDNs).

By providing a unified framework for managing the integrity and utilisation of registered mobile numbers across sectors, the system is expected to enhance trust in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

The consultation aligns with Section 58 of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, which mandates stakeholder engagement before major regulatory changes are finalised.

Amupitan seeks NPC’s support to rebuild trust, safeguard credible elections in 2027

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has appealed to National Peace Committee (NPC) and other critical stakeholders to intensify efforts to rebuild public trust and strengthen peaceful participation in Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general election.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupita, SAN, made the appeal at the stakeholders’ Briefing and Presentation of the Annotated Peace Accord in Abuja.

The event brought together leaders of political parties, heads of security agencies, and civil society organisations, underscoring broad-based commitment to peaceful and credible elections.

Former Head of State and Chairman of NPC, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, GCFR, was represented at the event by Convener of the peace committee, Most Revd. (Dr.) Mathew Hassan Kukah.

Amupitan, in a statement by INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, underscored the urgency of restoring confidence in the electoral system, describing the prevailing trust deficit as a major concern for the commission.

The INEC chairman described Nigeria’s electoral landscape as diverse, complex, and highly competitive, stressing that democratic growth must be anchored not only on legality but also legitimacy.

He stated, “So for us, we appeal to the National Peace Committee to help us in the area of building trust. The trust deficit is such that anywhere you go, it’s palpable.

“If voters will not participate, then whoever emerges…it is also in our own interest that everybody continues to participate. We’ll get it right one day.

“Let the process be so transparent that whoever emerges will not only have legality but legitimacy.”

Amupitan added that the commission was open to scrutiny and constructive criticism.

He stated, “Constitutionally, INEC is the custodian of Nigerian democracy and elections. Whatever comments are made, we don’t get angry. We take them, process them and see how we can improve.”

Amupitan emphasised that while INEC continued to refine its processes, the responsibility of credible elections could not rest on the commission alone.

He called on political parties to strengthen voter mobilisation and internal discipline, stating that sustained civic engagement is vital to reversing declining turnout.

Earlier, Abdulsalami reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to providing a neutral platform for dialogue, mediation, and confidence-building.

He stated that since 2015, the Peace Accord had served as a stabilising instrument in Nigeria’s electoral process.

He described the Annotated Peace Accord as a strengthened framework designed to provide clarity, guidance, and preventive engagement among stakeholders.

“The responsibility of safeguarding our democracy rests with all of us,” he stated, calling for sustained collaboration, restraint, and responsible conduct from political actors, institutions, and citizens.

DSS arrests teacher Udeme Stephen over alleged threats, attempted assassination of Peter Obi

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a 26-year-old teacher, Udeme Sunday Stephen, over his alleged connection to threats and the February 24 gunfire incident involving former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benin City, Edo State.

The arrest marks the first major breakthrough since the shooting scare that trailed Obi’s visit to Benin, an episode that has continued to generate political debate as the country gradually approaches the 2027 election season.

A senior security source confirmed the development on Monday, simply stating, “Yes, it is true.”

Security sources said DSS operatives moved in after Stephen posted threatening messages on his X account, claiming responsibility for the attack and issuing further threats against Obi.

In one of the posts cited by investigators, the suspect allegedly wrote: “We warned Obi against his entrance into Edo State, but he mistook our resolve for his Obidiots online noise. Thank his stars he survived this one.

“I learnt he’s going to my Rivers State. Na my men go handle that one and dem no dey miss target.”

Investigators reportedly relied on forensic analysis to track the suspect’s digital footprint before carrying out a covert operation that led to his arrest. He is currently in DSS custody and is expected to be charged in court.

A top security official said the arrest followed credible intelligence gathering. “The outcome of the agency’s forensic investigations implicated the suspect. As a security organisation responsible for counter-espionage and VIP protection, the DSS investigates all credible threats irrespective of tribe or religion,” the source said.

The February 24 incident occurred shortly after Obi, former Edo State governor and ex-APC national chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, alongside leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), attended a political meeting in Benin.

Gunmen reportedly opened fire near Odigie-Oyegun’s residence in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) after allegedly trailing the convoy from the ADC secretariat on Ogbelaka Street.

The attackers shot at the gate, vehicles and parts of the compound before fleeing as security personnel responded. No casualties were recorded.

Obi’s allies and leaders of the Obidient Movement described the incident as a premeditated assassination attempt and criticised what they termed security lapses. However, the Edo State Government dismissed claims of official involvement, describing them as politically motivated.

The Nigeria Police Force had earlier confirmed receiving distress calls and deploying reinforcement to the area, noting that investigations were ongoing.

FRSC in Anambra decries spate of road crashes, to increase patrol

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, says it will increase patrol at black spots, following spate of accidents along the Agulu Lake axis, recording 11 deaths within one month.

The Sector Commander, Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, said this yesterday, while leading a joint road audit to the black spot, located along Agulu Lake in Anaocha Local Government Area (LGA)

According to her, the visit aligned with the Corps’ strategic goal of reducing road crashes and strengthening stakeholders’ engagement on road safety activities.

“The frequency of crashes at this spot is worrisome and this is mainly caused by the recklessness of some drivers.

Abia releases 2026 Climate Outlook, advises farmers on climate-smart practices

The Abia State Government has released its 2026 Climate Outlook and Agricultural Advisory, urging farmers to adopt climate-smart practices for a productive farming season.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Cliff Agbaeze, released the outlook, according to a statement yesterday by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Oluchi Franklin-Oji.

Mr Agbaeze said the outlook aligned with the Seasonal Climate Prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), providing farmers across the state with critical guidance for a productive 2026 farming season.

Quoting NiMet, Mr Agbaeze said Abia was projected to experience above-normal rainfall, with annual totals ranging between 1,800mm and 2,200mm.

He said the rainy season was expected to commence between late March and early April and end between late October and early November.

According to him, the season is projected to last between seven and eight months, supporting multiple cropping cycles.

The commissioner also said that peak rainfall was anticipated between June and September, increasing the risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.

He advised farmers to cultivate raised ridges, plant early-maturing and flood-resistant crop varieties, and ensure proper drainage systems on their farms.

He also urged farmers to engage regularly with extension services for real-time weather updates and technical support.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting farmers through updated cropping calendars, the provision of improved, climate-resilient seedlings, and the strengthening of extension services statewide.

“The ministry will distribute updated cropping calendars, provide improved and climate-resilient seedlings and strengthen extension services statewide.

“We will partner with NiMet to disseminate timely weather advisories in local languages,” Mr Agbaeze said.

Mr Agbaeze stated that Governor Alex Otti of Abia State is committed to agricultural transformation and rural development in the state.

Woman abducts three siblings days after renting apartment in Ebonyi community

A yet-to-be-identified woman has allegedly abducted three siblings in a community in Ebonyi State, days after renting an apartment in the area.

The incident, our  correspondent gathered, occurred on Saturday in Nwezenyi Community in Igbeagu, Izzi Local Government Area of the state.

The victims were identified  as Favour, Obinna and Kamso Okeoha. They were said to have been abducted while their parents were away.

Our correspondent who who visited the area yesterday observed that the suspect’s apartment was the only one painted in the compound.

The apartment has the inscription, “One Love” on the wall.

Residents of the area, who asked not to be named, told our correspondent  that they were shocked over the development.

One resident said the woman rented her apartment in the area on Thursday and moved in on Friday.

“She stayed just one day before the children were abducted on Saturday. We do not even know her identity,” the resident said.

A neighbour said the suspect appeared friendly and even painted her room with the inscription “One Love” on the wall, apparently to create a positive impression among other tenants.

The parents of the abducted children were not available for comment during the visit.

Meanwhile, many sympathisers were seen in the compound awaiting the arrival of the grieving parents.

When contacted yesterday, the police spokesperson in Ebonyi State, Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the abduction to our correspondent.

Mr Ukandu, a superintendent of police, said the police are investigating the matter to track down the suspect and rescue the victims.

Not the first time

There have been cases of child abduction in Ebonyi in recent times.

The incident occurred barely a month after three children were abducted from the same compound at Nkwegu, opposite the Nkwegu Military Cantonment gate in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state.

The victims – a two-year-old boy and two girls aged four and two – were abducted on 7 February this year.

Fubara sends list of commissioners-nominee to Rivers assembly after peace deal

Rivers State House of Assembly, yesterday, confirmed that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has sent a fresh list of commissioner nominees.

The clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi, disclosed this in a statement posted on the assembly’s Facebook page on Tuesday.

The latest development occurred after the governor dissolved the state executive council on 12 February, four days after President Tinubu’s fourth intervention in the protracted political crisis in the oil-rich state.

Mr Fubara nominated nine people on the list, which is believed to be the first batch of commissioner-nominees.

The nominees are: Datonye Alasia, a professor, Tonye Bellgam, Temple Nwofor, Peters Nwagor, Charity Deemua, and Tamuno Williams, a lawyer.

Others are: Lekue Kenneth, Otonye Amachree, a lawyer, and Amairigha Hart

According to the statement, the assembly asked the nominees to submit 40 sets of their Curriculum Vitae, photocopies of credentials and evidence of compliance with tax obligations.

“All documents should be forwarded to the office of the Clerk of the House at the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters,” Mr Amadi added.

The protracted political crisis between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, which has lingered since 2023 despite peace deals, was recently doused after President Bola Tinubu intervened in February.

The governor dissolved the state executive council in February, four days after Mr Tinubu’s fourth intervention in the protracted political crisis in the oil-rich state.

On its part, the Rivers State House of Assembly, on 19 February, withdrew its third impeachment move against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngọzi Odu, a professor.

The relationship between Messrs Fubara and Wike first broke down a few months after the governor assumed office in 2023 because of the struggle for control of the political structures in the south-southern state.

Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission suspends pilgrimage to Israel, Middle East

The Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) has suspended pilgrimages to Israel and the Middle East owing to the escalation of tensions in the region.

It cited the security situation in Israel and all the Middle East.

NCPC’s Executive Secretary, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, said during a press briefing in Lagos Yesterday.

He announced that every pilgrimage of the commission and that of the private pilgrimage operators has been suspended until security in Israel and all the Middle East returns to normalcy.

Bishop Adegbite also assured that the over 500 pilgrims that made up the last batch of the 2025 pilgrimage have safely landed in Nigeria Yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has promised the safety of Nigerians in the Middle East.

In a statement Yesterday, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) says Nigerian authorities are monitoring the situation with a view to taking the necessary action.

The commission said Nigerian authorities are monitoring the situation and have received calls “from a few Nigerians in Qatar, UAE, and Iran enquiring about preparations for evacuations when it becomes necessary.

“The fact of the matter is that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with all relevant agencies for appropriate steps, while appealing to Nigerians in the affected countries to follow the travel advice as issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and contact the emergency numbers provided by the ministry.

“Nigerians in affected countries should be rest assured that the federal government is monitoring the situation and will take necessary steps to ensure no Nigerian life is endangered,” NiDCOM said in a statement by its Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran in the early hours of Saturday. But the Iranian authorities retaliated and later carried out strikes in some Gulf countries.

NOA, NAFDAC flag off nationwide campaign on ban of sachet alcoholic drinks

…NAFDAC says reported NASS, SGF stay of action is fake news

The National Orientation Agency (NOA), in collaboration with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Yesterday launched a joint campaign to enforce the ban on sachet alcoholic drinks in Nigeria.

The initiative, also supported by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), aims to safeguard the lives and future of Nigerian children, according to NOA Director General Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Issa-Onilu emphasized that the ban is a deliberate public health intervention designed to reduce underage access to cheap, high-strength alcohol and curb harmful drinking patterns across communities.

NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, addressed recent fake reports suggesting that the National Assembly and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation had called for a suspension of the ban. She clarified that these claims are false.

The Federal Government, through NAFDAC, officially banned the production and sale of alcohol in sachets and PET or glass bottles under 200 millilitres, effective January 1, 2026.

Issa-Onilu highlighted the significance of the collaboration, “NAFDAC safeguards public health through regulation. FCCPC protects consumer rights and ensures responsible market practices.

NOA mobilises citizens for behavioural change and national consciousness. Together, we align regulation, consumer protection, and public enlightenment to ensure this policy achieves its intended impact.”

“For too long, sachet alcohol has been dangerously accessible. It is inexpensive. It is portable. It is easy to conceal. In many rural and semi-urban communities, it became easier for a young person to obtain high-strength alcohol than to access proper guidance and protection. When affordability meets vulnerability, the consequences are profound.

“We have seen those consequences. Early exposure to alcohol significantly increases the risk of addiction and long-term dependency. It undermines educational attainment. It contributes to domestic instability and violence. It is linked to road traffic incidents, risky behaviour and declining productivity. Over time, it weakens families and destabilises communities.

“As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure. It is far less costly to prevent harm than to repair damage. Government has both a constitutional duty and a moral obligation to act before harm becomes entrenched.

“This joint nationwide campaign is therefore not about restriction for its own sake. It is about protection. It is about safeguarding children and vulnerable populations. It is about reinforcing responsible consumption standards. It is about strengthening the fabric of our society.

“The National Orientation Agency will lead the behavioural change component of this campaign with full national deployment. With 818 offices nationwide and operational structures across all 774 Local Government Areas, we will ensure that this message reaches every community. Our State Directorates, Zonal and Local Government Offices, and our Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers will take this campaign directly to rural communities, youth groups, transport unions, market associations, artisans, schools and faith-based institutions. The engagement will take place in town halls, markets, motor parks and community centres, delivered in languages that resonate with the people.

“We will reinforce these efforts through sustained media engagement on television and radio, strategic use of digital platforms, active social media campaigns and collaboration with credible influencers who can speak directly to young audiences. We will also deploy the NOA CLHEEAN App, available on Android and Apple platforms, to empower citizens to report violations and support responsible enforcement in their communities.

“Let it be clearly stated: consumer protection is public protection. Market responsibility is national responsibility. When products undermine health and safety, the government must act in the interest of the people.

“No nation prospers when its youth are caught in cycles of preventable addiction. No society advances when harmful practices become normalised. Protecting our children today is an investment in Nigeria’s stability and productivity tomorrow.

“We call on parents and guardians to remain vigilant. We urge community leaders to champion awareness. We expect full compliance from retailers and distributors. We encourage citizens to refuse patronage of banned products and to support lawful enforcement efforts.

“This joint campaign represents unity of purpose. It demonstrates that public health regulation, consumer protection and national orientation are not isolated functions, but interconnected pillars of responsible governance.

“The National Orientation Agency, in partnership with NAFDAC and FCCPC, will not relent in sensitising our people. We will not relent in promoting responsible citizenship. We will not relent in protecting the wellbeing of Nigerians.

“Together, through awareness, compliance and collective vigilance, we can build a healthier, safer and more responsible nation.”

On her part, NAFDAC DG, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye hs described as fake news reports making the rounds that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the National Assembly called for a halt of the enforcement of the ban on sachet alcohol.

Adeyeye said on the contrary, the National Assembly motion on the issue which was forwarded to the office of the SGF backed NAFDAC enforcement action.

She said, “The Senate decided that they are going to make resolutions on November 6, 2025. They made the resolutions and these were communicated to the Secretary to the Federal Government, SGM, on December 1, 2025. And the resolutions urge NAFDAC not to grant further extension to the moratorium and to ensure immediate strict enforcement of the ban on such alcohol and alcohol in small bottles. “It urges the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to support NAFDAC on the ban on such alcohol and alcohol in smaller volumes.

“It urges the Federal Ministry of Health to release its national alcohol policy that includes prohibition of alcohol in such a small volume less than 200 mls. It urges the National Orientation Agency and NAFDAC to collaborate and intensify nationwide sensitisation of dangers of alcohol in such small volume bottles.”

Stressing the need to enforce the ban, she said “We are here to ensure that the ban on such alcohol, and alcohol in small bottles less than 200 mils, remain banned.

“We are here to make sure that we have a future. Alcohol is one of the most widely used substances of abuse among youths. Several studies on alcohol indicate that within the last few decades, there has been a rapid increase in alcohol availability, production, importation, and consumption across all age groups in Nigeria.

“The availability and easy access to alcohol have been identified as a contributory factor to the increasing alcohol consumption among minors.

“It is about 50 Naira to buy sachets of alcohol. Some people have been made rich but some children are losing their future, their livelihoods in the future. Some children are potential patients for liver cirrhosis, for kidney failure, for mental instability.

“Underage drinking is linked to liver and kidney damage. Hypertension. Disrupted hormone growth and increased cancer risk later in life.”

In conclusion, she said, “access to alcohol by children can be limited if the pack sizes such as small volume bottles that can be easily concealed are made not available. And that ban is going to ensure that.”

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission also threw its weight behind the enforcement of the ban.

Th Commisin said it would be standing side by side with NAFDAC in the enforcement process so as to safeguard the underaged who are the future of the country.

Lassa fever crisis deepens, five healthcare workers infected as 75 die – NCDC

…Disease Spreads Across 16 States In Week Seven Report

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), has confirmed that five healthcare workers were infected during the latest reporting week as Lassa fever claimed 75 lives nationwide between January and mid‑February 2026.

The case fatality rate has risen to 23 per cent, underscoring the severity of the outbreak.

In its Epidemiological Week 7 report, covering 9 to 15 February, the agency recorded 82 new confirmed cases, up from 74 in the preceding week. This brings the total to 326 confirmed cases and four probable cases out of 1,538 suspected cases reported so far this year.

The NCDC noted that the 23 per cent fatality rate in 2026 is significantly higher than the 19.7 per cent recorded during the same period in 2025.

Confirmed cases during the reporting week were recorded in 14 states: Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo, Plateau, Gombe, Nasarawa, Kano, Ebonyi, the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Kebbi, Kaduna and Benue. Overall, 16 states across 58 local government areas have reported at least one confirmed case this year.

About 84 per cent of confirmed cases were concentrated in Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba and Edo states, with Bauchi accounting for the highest number of infections. Young adults aged 21 to 30 remain the most affected group, though cases range from one to 90 years. The male‑to‑female ratio stands at 1:0.8.

The infection of healthcare workers has raised concerns about infection prevention and control measures in health facilities.

Although suspected and confirmed cases are lower compared to the same period last year, the NCDC identified late presentation of patients and poor health‑seeking behaviour as contributing factors to the rising fatality rate.

The national Incident Management System has been activated to coordinate response efforts, while states have been urged to intensify community sensitisation and preventive measures to curb further spread.

Silverbird Gov of the Year Award:  True reflection of Uzodimma’s transformative leadership, says Commissioner

Imo State Commissioner for Information, Public Orientation and Strategy, Hon Declan Emelumba, has described the recent Silverbird TV award of Governor of the Year to Senator Hope Uzodimma, as a reflection of his transformative leadership in the state.

He said the Silverbird Group was on point in the award because, it speaks of the realities of the superlative performance of Governor Hope Uzodimma since he assumed office in 2020.

Emelumba, who represented his boss at the formal presentation of the award in Lagos at the weekend, noted that only a leader imbued with wisdom and ideas could have overcome the challenges Uzodimma faced to post that kind of performance in all sectors.

According to him ,” we started with very turbulent insecurity, but due to the hard work of the governor,  Imo is one of the safest states in the Southeast, if not the whole of Nigeria

The Commissioner declared that the award was a true reflection of the realities on ground in Imo State, saying that “In the last six years,  the Prosperity Agenda of His Excellency has been on course and today the fruits are evident ”

He disclosed that Uzodimma has made Imo State the first  in Nigeria to secure energy sovereignty through the commissioning of the Orashi Power Plant, thus positioning the economy of the state for an unprecedented boom.

He also listed the road revolution in the state whereby the governor has built more than 120 solid roads  with the attendant urban renewal programme.

Emelumba also announced that Uzodimma has trained more than 50,000 youths in digital skills while thousands of others have been trained and empowered to be self-employed.

He said that the governor was deeply appreciative of the award by Silverbird TV because it speaks eloquently of the services he has been rendering to the state.

In presenting the award to the governor,  Silverbird Group representatives commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for overcoming the turbulent insecurity to record massive achievements in the state.

2027: Transmission debate exaggerated, political parties should be prepared – Nenadi Usman

National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Senator Nenadi Usman, has said that the controversy surrounding the accompanying proviso to Section 60(3) of the Electoral Act 2022, which allows for manual transmission of election results, is exaggerated.

The LP chairman spoke at the ‘Live Citizens Town Hall’ on the new Electoral Act 2026, with the theme, ‘Electoral Act 2026: What it means for your vote and the 2027 elections’, held in Abuja at the weekend.

“While I commend the lawmakers for approving the electronic transmission of results to the IREV, I believe the controversy surrounding the accompanying proviso to Section 60(3) has been somewhat exaggerated,” she said

She noted that concerns expressed by opposition parties, about the possibility that the fallback to Form EC8A in the event of network disruptions could be abused, but maintained that the success or failure of any political party at a polling unit ultimately depends on the party’s preparedness and presence at that polling unit.

“If political parties deploy well-trained, vigilant, and capable agents across all polling units, votes will be protected, properly documented, and accurately reflected on the INEC portal,” she said.

“A careful reading of the proviso to Section 60(3) shows that Form EC8A is the primary source data and so, should be countersigned by candidates or polling agents, where available. The key phrase here is ‘where available.’ ”

She said it is the responsibility of political parties to ensure that their agents are indeed available in every polling unit, reminding them that the IREV is primarily for viewing results and keeping records, not collation.

She added, “For us in the Labour Party, the lessons from the last presidential election have been instructive. We have come to realise that the foundation of electoral success lies in meticulous grassroots preparation, particularly the deployment of agents.

“That is why we are committing significant resources and energy toward ensuring effective representation across the 176,974 polling units nationwide. In the previous presidential election, despite our strong belief in our performance, we faced challenges substantiating certain claims, largely because we lacked comprehensive agent coverage capable of producing duly countersigned copies of Form EC8A from across the federation.

“Therefore, I firmly believe that if political parties strengthen their internal structures and perform their responsibilities diligently, the widespread anxiety over real-time electronic transmission as the sole guarantor of credible results becomes less compelling.

“It would amount to outsourcing the solution to our own organisational shortcomings if we rely exclusively on INEC while neglecting our critical role on election day.

“As a political party, we will work on getting our act right, believe in the law, present our candidates and win elections come next year, 2027 by God’s grace.”

Executive order: FG begins direct remittance of oil revenues to FAAC

The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of Executive Order 9 of 2026, which mandates the direct remittance of oil revenues to the Federation Account Allocation Committee.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, disclosed this in a statement issued yesterday, detailing key resolutions reached at the meeting.

This followed the directive of President Bola Tinubu on the remittance to FAAC and the inaugural meeting of the implementation committee for the executive order.

Edun said the committee reaffirmed the President’s directive that revenues accruing to the federation from petroleum operations must be managed in line with constitutional provisions and in a way that safeguards funds meant for the three tiers of government.

“In line with the President’s directive, NNPC Limited shall cease, with immediate effect, the collection of the 30 per cent management fee and the 30 per cent frontier exploration fund deductions from profit oil and profit gas under Production Sharing Contracts.

“Additionally, all remittances of gas flare penalties into the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) are suspended with immediate effect, in line with the Executive Order,” the statement read.

On Section 2(3) of the order, which provides for direct payments by contractors into the federation account, the minister said the committee agreed that the transition must respect existing contractual and financing arrangements while maintaining investor confidence.

“For this reason, the Committee approved a defined transition period for the operationalisation of direct payments by contractors of profit oil, royalty oil, and tax oil into the Federation Account.

“Until the Committee issues detailed guidelines, contractors will continue to remit under the current process. During the transition period, the Committee will issue clear, standardised guidance to ensure an orderly changeover,” the statement added.

He further disclosed that the committee approved the establishment of a technical subcommittee to develop detailed transition guidelines within three weeks and to commence a review of the Petroleum Industry Act to address structural and fiscal anomalies affecting federation revenues.

“The Technical Subcommittee will be led by the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, and will include the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, and the Chairman of the Forum of Commissioners of Finance, representatives of the Minister of State Petroleum Resources, Oil, with secretarial support from the Budget Office of the Federation,” it said.

The minister added that the committee would continue to provide coordinated guidance and timely updates as implementation progresses.

He also commended stakeholders for their cooperation in ensuring that Nigeria’s petroleum resources deliver measurable benefits to citizens across the federation.

Nigerian bags 19-year jail term in US for $4m romance scam

A 40-year-old Nigerian national, Leslie Chinedu Mba, has been sentenced to 19 years in a United States federal prison for his role in a $4 million romance scam and business email compromise scheme.

The conviction was announced in a statement issued by the US Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Texas via its website on Monday.

According to the statement, Mba pleaded guilty on December 4, 2025, to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to make false statements in immigration documents.

US District Judge David Hittner subsequently sentenced him to 228 months (19 years) in federal prison.

“Not a U.S. citizen, he is expected to face removal proceedings, following his imprisonment. At the hearing, the court heard that victims were defrauded of over $4 million,” the statement said.

“Romance scams are among the lowest and most despicable forms of fraud because they prey upon the lonely and vulnerable, and disproportionately victimize senior citizens,” said U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei.

“These online scams Mba and his friends perpetrated jeopardized the livelihood of family-run businesses, the ability of elderly individuals to retire, and exploited the trust that fuels our economy. Even worse, Mba and his confederates committed these crimes while attempting to remain in our country under false pretenses by deceiving immigration authorities. Now, Mba has prison to look forward to, followed by a one-way ticket back to Nigeria,” Ganjei added.

Also commenting, FBI Houston Special Agent in Charge Jason Hudson said, “Out of all the frauds perpetrated by Leslie Mba and his co-conspirators, their weaponization of romance scams to deliberately target vulnerable and elderly Americans is most disturbing.

He said, “Romance scams cruelly manipulate trust, callously exploit the fear of loneliness, and leave victims both financially devastated and emotionally shattered.

“The FBI will continue to combat fraudsters whose schemes leave a wake of misery behind.”

The statement said that between April 2018 and December 2023, Mba and his accomplices — operating both within and outside the United States — carried out business email compromise and romance scams targeting unsuspecting victims.

The scheme allegedly began overseas, where co-conspirators gained unauthorised access to business email accounts and redirected payments to fraudulent bank accounts.

“Victims believed they were sending money to legitimate businesses, but Mba and others instead funneled the funds to accounts they controlled.

“Mba and others acted as money mules, opening or using existing bank accounts to collect and move proceeds from the fraud.

“Additionally, Mba tried to obtain U.S. permanent residency through multiple fraudulent marriages after his initial application was denied and he was ordered to be removed from the country.

“The scheme resulted in a total loss of $4 million,” the statement added.

Four other Houston residents — Grace Morisho, 30; Rodgers Kadikilo, 30; Kristin Smith, 38; and Alexandra Golovko, 36 — had earlier pleaded guilty in connection with the case.

Morisho, Kadikilo and Smith received prison sentences ranging from 15 to 25 months, while Golovko was sentenced to five years’ probation.

Mba will remain in custody pending transfer to a facility to be determined by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The NPC Chairman, was speaking while addressing the staff and management at the NPC State Secretariat,  Owerri, when he commenced two-day, advocacy visit and stakeholders engagements, to Imo state, said the Commission is seriously sourcing funds, to meet  various needs and requirements for NPC operations, and one of the priorities, according to him, is staff welfare.

NDLEA uncovers meth laboratory in Imo, arrests wanted drug baron

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have uncovered a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Isiozi Obiato, Umuaka, in the Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State.

The agency said 18.4 kilograms of methamphetamine, large quantities of precursor chemicals and equipment used for the production of the illicit substance were recovered during the operation.

The development was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi.

According to the statement, the laboratory was dismantled on February 25, 2026.

“The NDLEA operatives in Imo State on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, dismantled a clandestine laboratory located at Isiozi Obiato, Umuaka, in Njaba Local Government Area, where 18.4 kilograms of methamphetamine were recovered alongside large quantities of precursor chemicals and equipment used in the production of the illicit substance,” the statement read.

In a related development, the agency announced the arrest of a wanted drug kingpin, Reginald Peter Chidiebere, who had been in hiding for 13 years over his alleged involvement in cocaine and heroin trafficking.

Babafemi said Chidiebere was first arrested in 2013 for importing cocaine into Nigeria and was subsequently arraigned before the Federal High Court of Nigeria in Lagos. He was granted bail by Justice Ayokunle Faji, but later failed to appear in court and disappeared.

The statement noted that his name resurfaced in February 2024 as one of the alleged masterminds behind the importation of 49.70 kilograms of heroin from South Africa, intercepted by the NDLEA operatives at the import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

It added that a follow-up operation conducted on February 19, 2024, at his hotel in Lagos led to the recovery of an additional 2.20 kilograms of heroin from one of his associates.

The agency subsequently secured an interim forfeiture order on the property and froze bank accounts linked to him.

“Following these developments, Chidiebere could no longer sustain himself in hiding, prompting his surrender to the agency on February 13, 2026.

“He is currently in custody to face his pending charges for which he jumped bail in 2013, as well as fresh charges linked to the 2024 heroin consignments,” the statement added.

2027: Governor Otti cautions political appointees

Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State, has cautioned political office appointees to remain focused on governance as political activities and propaganda ahead of the 2027 elections begin to intensify.

Governor Otti gave the charge on Saturday, February 28, while declaring open the two-day First Quarter Retreat organised by the Abia State Government for political office holders at the International Conference Centre, Ogurube-Umuahia. The retreat was themed “Accelerating Progress: Unlocking New Opportunities.”

The governor said that although citizens have witnessed notable improvements in their social and economic conditions under his administration, cabinet members must remain steadfast and not be distracted by emerging political developments in the state.

He noted that 2026 would be a particularly demanding year for government officials, stressing that no level of political noise should derail the administration’s development agenda across critical sectors of the state economy.

“My charge to you is to keep doing your job with assured diligence and firm commitment to the New Abia Agenda. We must stay focused. However, it would amount to self-deceit to be ignorant or inattentive to political occurrences around us,” Otti said.

“This will be a very busy year for all of us, and we must prepare for the journey ahead. There will be distractions, but no amount of noise, whatever the decibel, can take our attention away from the developments we want to see in our educational institutions, health ecosystem, and other critical sectors, where we plan to invest over one trillion naira in the current fiscal year.”

The governor emphasised that the future of Abia State must take precedence over all other considerations, adding that anything that could derail collectively agreed-upon goals should be firmly set aside.

Having been briefed by the retreat planning committee on the structure and tone of the programme, Governor Otti urged all appointees to take the retreat seriously and participate actively.

Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Emmanuel Meribeole, said the retreat was convened at a critical moment when collective effort was required to rebuild and reposition Abia State for sustainable growth.

He noted that since assuming office, Governor Otti had pursued deliberate and impactful reforms across various sectors of the economy, adding that such progress should not breed complacency—hence the need for the retreat.

According to him, the theme “Accelerating Progress: Unlocking New Opportunities” challenges participants to ask critical questions, engage in honest introspection, ensure strategic alignment, and evaluate performance.

He added that the retreat also served as a platform to strengthen teamwork across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), encouraging participants to engage openly in discussions, share experiences, challenge assumptions constructively, and embrace innovative ideas to enhance service delivery.

The Retreat that featured various presentations and question and answers sessions ended Monday.

Enugu govt grants 90-day amnesty for buildings without approval

The Enugu State Government has announced a 90-day amnesty window for property owners without approved building plans to regularise their properties, as part of ongoing efforts to enforce structured urban development and strengthen regulatory compliance across the state.

The government, in a statement issued by the Managing Director of the Enugu State Geographic Information System (ENGIS), Chiwetalu Nwatu, in Enugu, said the initiative, which will be implemented in collaboration with relevant planning authorities, offers owners of existing buildings an opportunity to obtain proper approvals and avoid future sanctions.

Under the amnesty, property owners without approved plans are required to submit as-built drawings for approval through ENGIS. Those without existing drawings have been advised to engage certified architects to prepare as-built plans reflecting the current state of their structures and submit within the amnesty period.

ENGIS said the measure is designed to improve compliance, sanitise the built environment, and reinforce orderly physical development in line with the administration’s urban planning agenda.

The agency also issued a strong advisory on mandatory compliance going forward. It stressed that no building plan approval will henceforth be granted without a registered land title, noting that acceptable documents include a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) or a registered Deed of Assignment.

It further warned that no construction should commence without both a valid land title and an approved building plan issued by the appropriate authority, including ENGIS, the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), or designated town planning offices.

ENGIS also called on individuals and corporate bodies holding land under Power of Attorney arrangements to regularise their documentation by registering proper title instruments, to ensure eligibility for approvals and full legal protection.

Speaking on the policy, Nwatu described the amnesty as a corrective and forward-looking intervention. “This window is not punitive; it is an opportunity for property owners to come into compliance without penalties while helping the state build a more organised and secure urban environment,” he said.

He added that the move aligns with the state’s broader land administration reforms. “Going forward, we are institutionalising a culture where land title and building approval go hand in hand. This is critical for protecting genuine property owners and ensuring Enugu grows in a planned and sustainable manner,” Nwatu stated.

The amnesty took effect on Friday, February 27, 2026.

Landlord’s son kills tenant during brawl in Ondo

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested a 27-year-old man, Kazeem Awe, for allegedly killing a nursing mother in Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Council Area of the state.

Awe, son of the landlord of the victim, allegedly attacked the deceased, Motunrayo Adeleye, with a cutlass following a dispute over unpaid rent at their residence in the Alaba axis of the community.

The suspect, during the violent dispute, also injured the husband of the deceased, Mathew Adeleye, as well as their daughter.

The incident reportedly occurred around 5:00 a.m. in the Ore Alaba area, beside a popular school, throwing the usually peaceful neighbourhood into confusion as frightened residents scampered for safety.

According to sources, the violence was triggered by a lingering disagreement over house rent between the suspect and the deceased’s husband, a tenant in a building owned by the suspect’s father.

While speaking on his hospital bed, the husband of the deceased stated that the issue began when tenants residing in the building were served quit notices, despite their rents not yet being due.

“I had informed friends to help us search for another apartment, and we eventually secured one. We were preparing to move out that same Thursday the incident occurred,” he stated.

While confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Abayomi Jimoh, stated that the victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Ore, where the deceased was confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The spokesperson disclosed that the other two victims are currently receiving treatment while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

Sit-at-home: Soludo reopens Nkwo Nnewi after one-week closure, shuts Ihiala market

Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has reopened New Motorcycle Spare Parts Market, also known as Nkwo Nnewi, after a one-week closure.

The governor had through the Special Adviser on Trade and Markets, Evaristus Uba, sealed the market last Monday after he and other officials visited and found low turnout of traders, signaling non-adherence to the government order calling for abolition of the Monday-sit at-home.

Uba, who spoke on behalf of the governor, had threatened that if after one week the traders failed to turn up for Monday business, he would extend the ban.

But it was learnt that the ban was lifted on Monday after the chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Echezona Anazodo, visited the market and found a large turnout of traders.

Anazodo said: “I’m happy to know today that traders complied with the order to resume for business. I want to believe that if there was even half of this turn out last week, the market would not have been shut down.

“But now that most of you have complied, we will go round the market and seal the shops of traders who failed open. We don’t want a situation where the entire market would be shutdown just because of few traders, instead, those traders should bear the brunt themselves.”

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports have it that a market in Ihiala Local Government Area has also been shut down for non-compliance with the government order to shun the sit-at-home.

A source said government officials arrived at the market to see it under lock and keys, prompting the shutting down of the facility for one week.

Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State is one of the areas where separatist activities thrived during the peak of the Biafra agitation.

Several camps were built in the area by criminal elements who posed as agitators, making it very risky to engage in business activities in the area.
