Government has prohibited and banned all mining activities including excavation of laterite and River white sand mining within the state capital.

This is to preserve and protect the environment, ensure public safety and align mining operations with globally acceptable environmental standard.

Henceforth, all mining operations must be conducted outside the state capital territory, strictly in accordance with Imo State Environmental laws and regulations.

Any individual intending to engage in mining activities within Imo State must present a valid Environmental Impact Assessment AIE report with all relevant licenses and regulatory permits before operations, while individuals seeking to acquire land from communities for the purpose of mining are adviced to verify such transactions with Imo State government.

The Commissioner for Industry, Mines and Solid Minerals, Chief Ernest Ibejiako disclosed this while inaugurating the Imo State Mining and Environmental Monitoring Team in Owerri.

Chief Ibejiako said the team has been mandated to monitor and enforce all mining regulations.

He said their inauguration marks the final closure of Mining within the state capital.

The Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Chief Ejikeme Major Ejikeme told the Monitoring Team that they have the powers and backing of the state government to operate.

On behalf of the Monitoring Team,a member, Mr John Umezuruike thanked government for recognizing and giving them the responsibility even as he pledged not to disappoint.
