EFCC clamps down on firms issuing invoices in Dollar

Amid efforts to curb the continued depreciation of the naira against the dollar, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) revealed the arrest of numerous currency racketeers in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Kaduna.

Additionally, it has summoned proprietors of privately operated universities and higher institutions who impose fees in dollars for questioning.

Naija News reports that EFCC announced on Wednesday that it has established a Special Task Force within its Zonal Commands in order to address the issues of currency mutilation and dollarization of the economy.

This development coincided with a request from the Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON) for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to permit its members to recommence dollar sales.

The naira traded at N1,490/$ at the parallel market and N1,418/$ in banks yesterday.

In a statement by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the EFCC said the task forces will ensure “the enforcement of extant laws against currency mutilation and dollarisation of the economy.

“The task force, inaugurated by the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Ola Olukoyede, was raised to protect the economy from abuses, leakages and distortions exposing it to instability and disruption.”

In a separate statement, the EFCC reported that its operatives from the Kaduna Zonal Command apprehended three individuals linked to suspected currency racketeering.

Identified as Musa Gideon, Abdul Seidu Adamu, and Justine Musa, the suspects were apprehended yesterday on Yakubu Gowon Way, Kaduna, as they attempted to “sell new naira notes to an EFCC undercover operative.“

NYSC member slumps, dies while watching Nigeria, South Africa match

A member of the National Youths Service Corps, (NYSC), slumped and died during the penalty shootout stage of the match between Nigeria and South Africa, Wednesday evening.

It was gathered that the youth, identified simply as Samuel from Kaduna State, who was serving in Adamawa, died just before the last kick that ensured Nigeria’s progress to the final of the African Cup of Nations.

Asaba traditional ruler, Edozien dies at 99

The Asagba of Asaba, Delta State, Obi Joseph Edozien, is dead.

The monarch was said to have joined his ancestors on Wednesday.

He was aged 99.

The news of the monarch’s demise filtered in on Thursday with residents of the state capital describing his death as a great loss to the kingdom.

A palace source, who is one of the monarch’s top aides, confirmed his death to our correspondent.

The source familiar with the workings of the palace, however, said there would be no public statement on the development until after seven days.

Recall that on January 9, 2024, 1000 trees were planted in his honour as part of the activities lined up for the celebration of Asagba’s 100 birthday anniversary.

“It is true that the Asagba is no more. But we respect our tradition so much. Our tradition forbids the official announcement of the monarch’s death before seven days,” the source said.

The news of the Asaba’s demise is coming hours after reports of the death of a former federal lawmaker from the state, Dr Cairo Ojougboh, on Wednesday.

The politician, who was a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, was said to have passed away while watching the AFCON semi-final match between Nigeria and South Africa.

A source close to the politician said, “Cairo Ojougboh, a medical doctor died during the Nigeria vs.South Africa match.

“The incident happened when the penalty was awarded against Nigeria. DrOjougboh was said to have shouted and slumped due to a massive heart attack when SA scored.”

Court adjourns Sen Orji’s N1.5 b defamation suit against Apugo

Abia State High Court, sitting in Umuahia, has adjourned till February 16 a N1.5 billion defamation suit filed by ex-Gov. Theodore Orji against a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Prince Benjamin Apugo.

When the matter was called up for hearing, the plaintiff was represented by his counsel, Chief Henry Balogu, while the defendant was absent, and no counsel appeared for him.

The trial judge, Justice A. O. Chijioke, observed a delay in the process that had been filed since 2020 and ordered that the defendant must appear in court on the next adjourned date.

He said that trial would begin on the next adjourned date, with or without the presence of the defendant.

The trial judge directed the Clerk of the Court to re-present the appearance notice to the defendant for him to appear on the next adjourned date.

Later in an interview, the plaintiff’s lawyer, Balogu, told Vanguard that the suit was filed because the defendant made “false and malicious remarks” injurious to the personality of his client.

“We are in court because of a libelous publication that was a material false message that caused him injury to his person , reputation and was intended to diminish his status as a political leader, former Governor and senator.”

According to the counsel, the defendant, on a live radio programme, accused his client of looting the Abia treasury while holding sway as Chief of Staff and Governor, respectively.

Recall that Senator Orji was Abia Governor from 2007 to 2015.

Akeredolu’s death’ll enhance my chances of becoming Ondo gov -Jimoh Ibrahim

The senator representing Ondo South, Jimoh Ibrahim, has declared that he is ready to contest the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

He said the death of a former governor of the state, RotimiAkeredolu, will enhance his chances of becoming the next governor.

Ibrahim also expressed optimism that there would be no imposition of a candidate from the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress and the Presidency.

The senator, who spoke on Thursday, in Akure, said President Bola Tinubu would allow a free and fair primary to enable the best candidate to emerge.

He said, “I’m declaring my intention to run for the governorship election of Ondo State. Among the contestants, I am the oldest. I have contested election twice in my lifetime, one of which I contested for governorship position in 2003, and none of these contestants was on that ballot.

“The President will never say that we should go and work for the incumbent governor. He can only appeal that maybe he prefers one person if you can prefer him and if you cannot, go and do your election. So the President cannot say that I have taken this person so all of you should go and sit down. Even Buhari who is very clueless about anything can never do that.”

The APC governorship aspirant also noted that the death of former Governor RotimiAkeredolu would not affect his chances but would rather increase the chance of winning the primary and the main election.

“Maybe the death of Aketi has enhanced my chances because Aketi is a human being, he can be subjectively objective at the last minute. But now that he is no more, that possibility is written off completely. So whoever is there, wants to run for governor will meet me at the field.

“So Aketi’s death doesn’t affect my chances at all, but it would rather enhance my chances to win the governorship position of this state. So we are working seriously to win this election,” Ibrahim stressed.

He noted that economy and security were part of his cardinal programmes for the state, saying there was a need to empower the state Security Network Agency also known as Amotekun with modern technology to enable it to combat criminals effectively.

“My programmes are very straightforward, we are to create moral efficiency and moral knowledge and make the body more efficient. We must also map Ondo State borders for a security network and then ensure that we will never have any cases of kidnapping, by making Amotekun a classic unique security outfit that will come with a good strategy to challenge any security issues in our state.

“So one of the areas we are looking at is to ensure that everybody in Ondo state can go to sleep with their eyes closed and that’s top most of our priority. Mapping every systems, the tactical operations of Amotekun have to come more distinct into technology, I want an Amotekun that is Information Technology informed because I have PhD in war,” he stressed

Fire guts Anambra LG secretariat

Fire guts Anambra LG secretariat

A part of the building housing the Dunukofia Local Government Area secretariat in Ukpo, Dunukofia, Anambra State, has been gutted by fire.

It was gathered that the fire outbreak, which occurred late on Wednesday, was a result of bush burning close to the local government secretariat.

It had earlier been reported that two separate fire outbreaks were also recorded at the Timber Market in Nnewi and behind the Sinai Gas Plant in Awka, the Anambra State capital. The fire, which occurred at different times on Tuesday, raged for hours but was controlled by the intervention of the men of the Anambra State Fire Service.

The Anambra State Fire Chief, Martin Agbili, who confirmed Wednesday’s incident at the LG secretariat, said it started around 6:53 pm on Wednesday.

Agbili said, “At about 18:53hrs (6.53 pm) of Wednesday, Anambra State Fire Service, received a distress call of a heavy fire outbreak at Dunukofia.

“Immediately, we deployed our fire truck and gallant Firefighters to the scene of the fire and fought, controlled and extinguished the fire.

“The cause of the fire was a bush fire which was started by unknown person(s) and encroached into the local government council secretariat.

“During the firefighting operations, we were able to control and extinguish the fire and prevent it from destroying a lot of things at the local government council.

“We withdrew from the fire scene at about 20:30hrs after fighting the fire to a standstill and calming the situation.

“It is also important that we clear all bushes around our environment, especially at this dry season and harmattan, to avoid ‘had I known’. Fire kills but you can prevent it.”

Abia govt agency seals PDP secretariat

The Abia State Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at 45 Finbers Road, Umuahia, has been sealed by men believed to be officials of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA).

The Secretariat was sealed by the officials on Wednesday.

No reason was given for the development.

But a notice on the building advised the occupants to visit UCDA’s office at 51 Ogurube layout, Umuahia for more details.

Meanwhile, the Abia State chapter of the PDP has called for the swearing in of Aaron Uzodike of the PDP, as a member representing Aba North constituency in Abia State.

The party in a statement signed by Abraham Amah, the party’s Vice Chairman/Acting Publicity Secretary, expressed worry that the Aba North constituency is still without a lawmaker representing them in the Abia State House of Assembly despite the fact that the Appeal Court had declared Aaron Uzodike as the winner of the March 18 election and removed Destiny Nwagwu of the LP.

Amah described the situation as impunity.

“It is common knowledge that the only document required by the Speaker to swear in a member into the House of Assembly is the Certificate of Return which was issued to Hon. Aaron Uzodike by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, a few days after the Court judgment and thus made him the duly and validly elected member of the Abia State House of Assembly to represent the good people of Aba North.

“Why has the Speaker refused to swear him in?” Amah asked.

APC asks Gov Fubara to account for over N144 billion federal allocations …Accuse the govt of running the state with budget

The All Progressives Congress (APC), has asked the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, to account for the over N144 billion he received from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) in the past five months.

The Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, made the call yesterday when he led stakeholders of the party on an advocacy visit to the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt—Hon. Martin Amaewhule, in Port Harcourt.

Okocha who accused Governor Fubara’s administration of misappropriation of state funds, said the governor has nothing to show in the state in terms of development despite receiving over N144 billion from the Federal Government Allocation Funds from June to November 2023.

He also urged the governor to focus on developing the state rather than playing politics with the state funds.

“This might sound unpalatable but annoying. As a party in opposition in the state, we have applied and received data on the sum received by the Rivers state government from Federal Allocation.

“From June 22, 2023, to November 2023. It is our finding that a whooping sum of N144,291,667,791.01 has been received from Federal Allocation under FAAC.

“This amount is besides internally generated Revenue of the state which is put on conservatively N10 billion every month. We regret that this humongous amount has not been transmitted to action in any way in terms of development in the state.

“We, therefore, warn that as a party, We regret that this humongous amount has not translated to action in anyway in terms of development in the state. What we see are heavily funded sick processions and media presences in support of an unnecessary political imbroglio.

The Rivers APC CTC Chairman also frowned at the governor’s alleged refusal to represent the 2024 Budget Estimate to the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Amaehwule and urged him (Fubara) to without delay go and present the budget to the assembly.

He wondered how the Rivers State government, under Governor Fubara, has been spending the state funds without a budget.

“We frown at the governor’s impunity in running Rivers State without a Budget. However, we remind him that it will amount to gross financial misconduct for him to continue on this dangerous voyage.

“As a party, we are happy to receive you as an ornament and treasurable asset. We thereby through you demand the Executive arm to shelve their necessary delay in presenting the 2024 Budget Estimate to the Assembly, to enable the budget to pass through the crucibles and be approved.

“What we see are hidden funded sick processions and media presences in support for unnecessary politics.

“We, therefore, warn that as a party, we shall not hesitate to punish any member of our party who is in cohort with this massive flopping and crafts financial magnificent of our dear Rivers state fund.”

Responding, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule said the assembly had recently, passed many bills into law which included the local government autonomy bill, adding that the lawmakers had also reverted the embargo on the use of public facilities for political activities in the state.

He noted that all actions taken by the assembly were fully backed by law.

Man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 4-year-old girl in Akwa Ibom

An AkwaIbom State High Court has sentenced a 32-year-old man, Akaninyene Sunday Ekwere, to life imprisonment for raping a 4-year-old girl.

Ekwere, a trader who deals on engine oil, electrical appliances and recharge cards, reportedly lured the minor to his shop where he defiled her.

The girl is the last child in a family of five.

The mother of the victim discovered the bruises around her private part when she bathed her, prompting her parents to report the matter to the Police.

In his confessional statement, Ekwere, who hails from IkotIbritam and a neighbour to the victim, said he saw the minor playing outside the compound and invited her to his shop, where he rubbed vaseline oil on her private part and raped her.

In his judgment, Justice NkereuwemObot held that Ekwere does not deserve to live in the midst of sane people as he is dangerous to the society.

Justice Obot found the accused guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The convict who is popularly called “Doctor” pleaded with the court to have mercy on him as he is a married man.

Under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Laws, 2020, rape carries life imprisonment in addition to the name of the victim being entered in the registrar of sex offenders in the state.

Alleged N80bn Fraud: Kogi Kicks As EFCC Includes Bello In Charges

Kogi State government has raised the alarm over what it described as a desperate attempt by “criminals masquerading as politicians” to tarnish the image of the immediate past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, for selfish reasons, through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

The state government said, in its desperation, “which would leave Nigerians wondering who exactly is afraid of Yahaya Bello”, the EFCC has, in an amended charge, accused the former governor of diverting Kogi State government funds in September 2015, four months before he assumed the position of a governor. It said this was not only laughable but portrayed the EFCC as an agency infested with persons whose intents disagree with the noble intention of the president to defeat corruption in Nigeria. A statement signed by the commissioner for information in Kogi State, Kingsley Fanwo, said, “The fact that the EFCC, in charge No. FHC/ABJ/CR/550/2022: FRN V. 1. Ali Bello 2. Dauda Suleiman, currently pending before Honorable Justice J.K. Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division further amended the ‘Amended Charge’ to include in the count, the name of H.E Yahaya Bello, describing him as being “at large”, is ridiculous, laughable and portrays the EFCC as an agency infested with persons whose intents disagree with the noble intention of Mr. President to defeat corruption in Nigeria. “Being ‘at large’ of course means that a person is evading arrest or is on the run and cannot be found after an attempt to arrest. “For the sake of clarity, the original charge is against Ali Bello and Dauda Suleiman, Ali’s associate. The offence which H.E Yahaya Bello is alleged to have committed upon which he has been named in the count is conspiracy to convert the total sum of N80,246,470,089. which offence is said to have occurred on or about September 2015 in Abuja. His co-conspirators according to the Count are AbdulsalamiHudu (Kogi State Government House Cashier) described as being ‘at large’ too, Ali Bello and Dauda Suleiman. “In the EFCC’s desperation to nail H.E Yahaya Bello, they forgot their thinking hammer at home. “The count of the offence is most laughable as the election that produced H.E Yahaya Bello, as governor of Kogi was only conducted in November 2015. Indeed, Captain Idris Wada of the PDP held sway as governor of Kogi State at the material time until he handed over to H.E Yahaya Bello on the 27th January, 2016. “Yahaya Bello could therefore not have as of September 2015 conspired with anyone, including AbdulsalamiHudu, a Kogi Government House Cashier to convert any money belonging to the Kogi State Government. It is to be noted that H.E Yahaya Bello before becoming the Governor of Kogi State had no financial dealings with the Kogi State Government which could have permitted him to convert monies belonging to the Kogi State Government, hence, one’s dismay at the allegation.”

The state government warned political actors to steer clear of Kogi State affairs and desist from their campaign of calumny “as the state government has not said its money is missing, and has been adjudged, both locally and internationally, as top in the area of transparency and accountability.” The state government asked: “Why should Nigerians trust the leadership of the agency that made such a ridiculous, shameless and indefensible allegation? The Chairman of the Commission should tender unreserved apologies to the Nigerian people for making us a laughing stock in the comity of nations.” It called on the president to step in to save the integrity of the EFCC from those “pushing the Commission into a fight that should be left to politicians.”

“The Kogi State Government under the leadership of His Excellency Alh. Ahmed UsmanOdodo will continue to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President. We will also continue to promote probity, accountability and transparency and open our books to agencies and institutions constitutionally empowered to look into them. We will continue to win awards in transparency and accountability,” the state government added. The journey did not begin today, according to Fanw

Ifeanyi Ubah vows to unseat Soludo in 2025 …Describes himself as Professor of street politics

The senator representing Anambra South, Senator, Ifeanyi Ubah, has vowed to defeat Governor Charles Soludo in the state’s governorship election in 2025, stating that he’s fully ready.

According to Uba, who tagged himself a Professor of street politics, he possesses the capacity to defeat Soludo, who is a Professor of economics.

He declared that Anambra can’t continue as a one-party state, stressing that the people are craving for change within the political system.

Addressing newsmen on Tuesday, the lawmaker said: “I’m not a Professor of Economics, but I’m a Professor of street politics.

“Anambra cannot continue to be a one-state party. The people are tired and angling for change and we know Mr President knows the potential in Anambra too.

“We need a governor whose primary reason for running for the governorship seat of the state is to make our state a secure place for human development. We need a governor who will not only ensure the security of lives and property but will also, make life meaningful for our people so that every person can realize and maximize his or her potential.

“We need a governor that will match words with action, for without action, words will surely be a ploy to deceive our people. Our people have been deceived long enough. They need action now.”

Former Special Adviser to the Governor on Imo Orientation Agency, Chief Dr Fidel Onyeneke has appeal to Nigerians not to compromise in enhancing peace and unity in spite of the hard times in the Society.

Uzodimma-led Progressive Governors’ Forum doles out N200m to support Super Eagles

The sports loving Progressives Governors’ Forum, ably led by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, has doled out a whopping N200 million in support of the Super Eagles players currently gunning for the trophy of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte D’ Ivoire.

The Super Eagles are taking on the Bafana Banana of South Africa today in the semi final encounter.

Governor Uzodimma who has consistently sent words of encouragement to the Super Eagles players since the tournament got to it’s critical stages also promised them government’s total support that will make Nigeria lift the trophy.

In a statement by OguwikeNwachuku, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to Sen Uzodimma, the Governor said no amount of support extended to the Super Eagles players who are currently making Nigeria proud in Cote D’Ivoire, and on their way to making another continental history for the country, will be a waste.

The Imo State Governor used the opportunity to renew his call to the players and their handlers to remain focused and committed to the course of the 2023 AFCON, noting that while victory awaits their efforts, jubilation looms at all the nooks and crannies of Nigeria.

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John OwanEnoh broke the news of the Progressive Governors largesse to the Super Eagles, a development that reportedly elicited excitement and jubilation at the camp.

Senator Enoh said: “I want to thank the Progressive Governors’ Forum under the leadership of Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State for galvanizing and redeeming the sum of two hundred million Naira only to the Super Eagles of Nigeria who are currently in Cote D’Ivoire for AFCON 2023.”

The Minister not only commended the enthusiasm of Governor Uzodimma and  members of his Forum for the swift action taken to support the boys, but noted that it would go a long way in motivating the Nigerian team ahead of the semifinals match against South Africa at StadeBouaké in Bouaké, Ivory Coast.

Mbah reverses sack of 20 water corporation staff in Enugu

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has reversed last week’s sack of 20 staff of the Enugu State Water Corporation.

The workers were disengaged by the governor’s special personal assistant on water and waste management, Andreas Gebauer, an Austrian.

The reversal followed the public outcry that greeted the sack and the eventual death of one of the affected workers.

The affected workers were sacked following their alleged inability to meet the minimum N50 million monthly internally generated revenue target from the water supply.

Two days after the reported sack, one of the victims and director of the corporation, Christopher Abonyi, was reported to have died out of shock, a development that led to public outcry and protests from workers.

However, addressing the protesting workers of the corporation, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Fabian Nwigbo, and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Ben Asogwa told the workers that Governor Mbah has ordered the reinstatement of the disengaged workers.

Asogwa said: “On interaction with the governor, we found out that the sack was not the governor’s directive, he was not even aware of the sack and he directed that everybody should go back to their work. The governor said everybody should maintain peace and tranquillity and improve productivity.”

Reacting to the development, the state Commissioner for Water Resources, Felix Nnamani said Gebauer’s sack action was not officially communicated to him and only heard about it in the media.

Nnamani said: “There are civil service regulations, there is the Head of Service who is the administration head of all the civil servants and if any civil servant is found wanting, there are procedures that should be taken before extreme measures; so the unilateral sack of the workers is unknown to the ethics of civil service.

“I urge workers to calm down, it’s regrettable that one of them died two days after he was dismissed and I say condolences to his family, but I’m confident that the governor will do the needful because he is here to build people and not to destroy and he detests injustice.”

The public relations officer of the corporation, RomanusUgwu said the protesting staff have all gone back to duties while awaiting a formal letter withdrawing the purported sack of the 20 workers.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, told journalists after the raid that the baby factory where babies were being sold had the name ‘Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity’.

According to him, the state’s Health Facility, Accreditation and Monitoring Unit arrived at the facility for its routine inspection when it uncovered the operation.

National Association of Nigerian Students ask Tinubu to sack CBN governor immediately

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Bola Tinubu to swiftly terminate the appointment of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Dr. Olayemi Cardoso, citing concerns about a perceived lack of expertise and understanding in international economics.

In a statement released yesterday and jointly signed by NANS Southwest Zone D Coordinator, Alao John and Public Relations Officer, Bamigboye Peter Oluwadamilola, the student body expressed deep worries about the direction of the nation’s economy under Cardoso’s leadership.

Highlighting the crucial role of the CBN in shaping economic policies and ensuring financial stability, NANS asserted that Cardoso’s alleged deficiency in international economics poses a significant risk to Nigeria’s economic interests, especially in navigating the complexities of the global financial landscape.

The statement read, “It is evident that the incumbent CBN Governor lacks the necessary expertise in international economics.

“This deficiency poses a significant risk to Nigeria’s economic interests, particularly in navigating the complexities of global economic dynamics and fostering sustainable growth.” NANS urged the federal government to prioritize the appointment of a CBN Governor with a comprehensive understanding of international economics and the ability to collaborate effectively with fiscal authorities.

The student body stressed the importance of competent leadership for implementing sound monetary policies that promote economic stability and growth.

Additionally, NANS advocated for establishing a clear and measurable performance evaluation framework for the CBN Governor, encompassing key areas such as price stability, financial system resilience, and economic growth.

The call for the removal of the CBN Governor came amid growing concerns about the economic challenges facing Nigeria.

Union protests NAFDAC’s ban on cheap sachet alcoholic beverages, says it will trigger job losses

Members of the National Union of Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE) staged protests in Lagos against the recent ban imposed by the National Agency for Food, Drug and Control (NAFDAC) on cheap alcoholic beverages in sachets.

According to the union, the ban, effective since February 1, 2024, has led to the closure of production lines and raised concerns about potential job losses in the industry.

The ban, announced after a five-year phase-out notice issued in 2019, followed a multi-agency agreement in 2018.

NAFDAC asserted that it adhered to the timeline and did not renew licenses for the banned products after January 2024.

NUFBTE, representing workers in the food and beverage sector, expressed fears that the ban could result in thousands of job losses.

OlamideSomefun, vice chairman of the union’s Ota branch, emphasized the potential impact on employment within the industry, predicting that many local industries serving as raw material suppliers might fold up.

While acknowledging public health concerns, the union urged NAFDAC to consider the economic impact and proposed postponing the ban until economic conditions improve.

Idogen Emmanuel, the union’s Lagos deputy chairman, emphasized the importance of responsible consumption and age restrictions.

In response, AmudaKayode, NAFDAC director of drug evaluation and research, assured the union that the agency encourages businesses and does not aim to shut them down.

He reiterated the focus on public health, especially among young people, clarifying that the ban only applies to alcoholic beverages in sachets.

The union pledged to raise awareness through media channels and encourage members to follow existing regulations while expressing concerns about potential job losses and urging a reconsideration of the ban’s timing in light of economic challenges.

Falana’s Call on ECOWAS to Sanction Senegalese President for Postponing Elections

In response to Senegalese President, MackySall’s decision to postpone this month’s elections, human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has appealed to the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, to consider implementing targeted sanctions like travel bans and asset freezes on President MackySall and his government officials.

Falana urged ECOWAS to promptly convene an extra-ordinary session to address the worsening human rights and rule of law situation in Senegal.

Falana stated that the postponement of the elections indicates a deliberate attempt by Sall to manipulate the country’s Constitution in order to cling to power against the will of the citizens and their popular aspirations.

He emphasized that imposing targeted sanctions on President Sall and his officials aligns with the provisions of ECOWAS treaties and protocols, including article 45 (2) of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, as stated in Falana’s official statement.

NAF introduces attack helicopters as Tinubu pledges to tackle insecurity

President Bola Tinubu has once again vowed to put an end to the ongoing insecurity in Nigeria. His remarks were made recently during the induction of two T129 Attack Combat Helicopters and one King Air Beechcraft 360ER mobility aircraft for use by the Nigerian Air Force.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu emphasized that the acquisition of the helicopters and their induction symbolized the administration’s commitment to the nation’s security.

The induction ceremony took place at the 131 Engineering Group Hanger, Nigeria Air Force Base, Makurdi.

The President highlighted that the procurement and induction of the new platforms will enhance NAF’s airpower in the ongoing fight against terrorism.

He acknowledged NAF’s critical role in the nation’s security, international operations, and humanitarian needs since its establishment in 1964.

“I commend the Chief of Air Staff, officers, and men for their dedication to enhancing national security. The Tinubu administration will continue to provide support to NAF and the Armed Forces of Nigeria in combating terrorism, oil theft, and other criminal activities,”

Tinubu stated While noting significant progress in the ongoing counterterrorism efforts, the President cautioned that there should be no room for celebration until the security challenges are fully addressed.

He called for a change in mindset, strategy, and tactics to tackle the menace.

Air Marshal HasanAbubakar, the Chief of Air Staff, revealed that NAF had recently received a total of seven aircraft, including two Diamond 62 surveillance aircraft, two T-129 ATAK helicopters, and a King Air 360 ER.

He also announced plans to induct 46 new aircraft of various types over the next 18 months and informed that the air force currently has 170 pilots and 533 technicians undergoing training locally and internationally.

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, expressed gratitude to the President for his vision and unwavering support for the armed forces

Senate grills service Chiefs today over insecurity

The Senate has said it would grill the Service Chiefs yesterday and today over the insecurity in the country.

This was disclosed by Senator Tokunbo Abiru while announcing the postponement of the interface between the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions from Tuesday to Friday this week.

Killings and kidnapping of citizens for ransom have been on the rise in recent weeks, causing panic in the land.

The Senate had resolved last Tuesday to summon the Service Chiefs to offer explanations on what they were doing about the alarming insecurity in the country.

Abiru told journalists that due to the scheduled appearance of the Service Chiefs, the Senate had decided to postpone the appearance of the  CBN governor to Friday.

Members of the committee, in line with the resolution, gathered in Room 211, the venue of the planned interface with the CBN governor, from 3 pm to 4.30 pm before resolving to postpone it to Friday this week.

The chairman of the committee, Abiru said, “After waiting for close to two hours for the CBN governor on the planned interface, we have resolved to postpone it to Friday this week by 9 am.

with our colleagues in the House of Representatives since morning without knowing when exactly, the session would end.

“We would have fixed Wednesday or Thursday this week as a new day for the interface but the Senate has fixed the two days for critical and constructive engagement with the Service Chiefs.

“This made us eventually settle for Friday this week for interface with the CBN governor by 9 am prompt.

“Communication to this effect would be forwarded to the CBN Governor today (Tuesday) and possibly other government officials managing the economy.”

Earlier, in the plenary, the Senate held two-hour closed-door sessions after which it considered a motion by Senator Ahmad Lawan on the demise of a former governor of Yobe State, Senator Bukar  Ibrahim.

After observing a minute silence in honour of the deceased, the Senate raised a nine-man delegation to pay a condolence visit to the Governor of Yobe State and the family of the deceased.

Tinubu returns from France, orders emergency meeting on food security

President Bola Tinubu being welcomed on his arrival by government officials at the presidential wing of the NnamdiAzikwe Airport, on Tuesday night, as he returned to Nigeria after a two-week private visit to Paris, France.

The presidential jet, NAF 001, touched down at the Presidential Wing of the NnamdiAzikiwe International Airport, Abuja at about 9 pm.

The President was received by top government officials, including his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Also on the receiving line were the Kaduna State Governor, UbaSani; Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri; the Director-General of the Department of State Service, Yusuf Bichi, among others.

Although the presidency remained silent on the reason for the visit, the Nigerian leader was billed to return “in the first week of February 2024,” a statement announcing his departure on January 24 noted.

The trip was Tinubu’s third to France and his 14th foreign visit since he assumed office eight months ago.

He returned amid protests in some states over the rising food and living costs.

On Monday through Tuesday, angry youths and women took to the streets of Minna, the Niger State capital and Kano to protest what they described as the rising cost of living in the country.

Similar protests also erupted in Ondo State, Nigeria’s South-West.

On Tuesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, MuhammedIdris, said Tinubu had directed immediate interventions to alleviate the suffering and forestall a further breakdown in security.

The minister spoke after a meeting of the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention, chaired by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

After Tuesday’s meeting, which is the first of a series of three, Mohammed told journalists, “It is a special presidential committee to address the issue of food shortage or lack of enough food on the table of most Nigerians.

“What I will tell Nigerians is that the President has directed that government needs to step in to stem this tide. The government will not fold its arms and see how Nigerians are suffering regarding the availability of these food items.

“So, I want to plead with you to understand with the government. By the time these meetings are concluded, we’ll be able to issue a definite statement on the government’s position in this regard. But all I can say is that discussions are ongoing, and very soon, a solution is in sight for Nigerians.”

Idris, who argued that Nigeria was in no shortage of food, said the Federal Government was in talks with millers and major commodity traders to avail more supply, thereby reducing the price of some commodities.

He also alleged that some elements were taking advantage of the high food prices and the depreciation of the naira to wreak havoc.

“The government is also talking to major millers and major commodity traders, also to see what is available in their stores, to open it up so the government will provide some intervention, discuss with them, provide some intervention to make this food available to Nigerians.

“What the government is noticing is that actually there is still food in this country. Some people are taking advantage of the situation, especially because of the depreciation in the value of our currency, which has led to the cost of these food items also going up.

“So, all these issues were discussed…the National Security Adviser was there because this also has some national security implications. All these have been discussed,” the minister explained.

Federal High Court adjourns NnamdiKanu’s case –Lawyer

NnamdiKanu’s Special Counsel, AloyEjimakor said that the case slated before the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday, has been adjourned.

It was reported last month that the FHC picked February 8 for the case of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, according to Ejimakor.

In the latest development yesterday, Kanu’s lawyer said the legal representatives are positioned to receive a short date.

Ejimakor made this known on his X account.

“Sadly, the Federal High Court hearing of MaziNnamdiKanu’s case set for 8th Feb has been adjourned. Despite this setback, the Legal Team is poised for a short date, as we stand ready to join issues with this never-ending case, spanning nine years from 2015. All processes are in,” he wrote.

The adjourned date would have been the first case for the IPOB leader since the Supreme Court ruled on December 15, 2023.

Students Loan Scheme: Knocks as FG fails to meet January deadline

In June 2023, President Bola Tinubu signed into law a bill that provides interest-free education loans for Nigerians willing to acquire tertiary education.

Thereafter, the government assured that Nigerian students would be able to access the loan in January 2024.

“By January 2024, the new student loan must commence. To the future of our children and students, we are saying no more strikes,” Tinubu said while assuring students that indefinite strike will soon be a thing of the past.

The access to Higher Education Act, 2023, also known as Students Loan Act, established an Education Loan Fund to help Nigerians fund their higher education while paying in instalments two years after participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

The bill was first introduced in 2016 by Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

He reintroduced the bill in 2019 and it received more attention from the National Assembly in November 2022.

In December 2023, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, who affirmed Tinubu’s declaration that the Students Loan Scheme would commence in January 2024, said: “I want to tell you that we are on track. The committee is working day in and day out.

“The whole thing is going to be online, not through physical access. A website that will make for easy access is being developed.”

However, it was reported that with January gone, there is no hope in sight for the commencement of the scheme.

Chinoso Obasi, a former National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, said it was worrisome that it has not commenced despite assurances of the government.

Obasi said the non-implementation of the scheme in January was not a shock because the government might just have made such an announcement to make Nigerians believe they were working.

Speaking with newsmen, he said: “The Federal Government budgeted N50 billion for the execution of its Students Loan Scheme in 2024. This was stated in the budget appropriation information for 2024.

“This Bill started with Gbajabiamila in 2015 when it was first presented; before then, this loan was the recommendation of the 2014 National Confab where I was a student delegate.

“It was part of our recommendation. Though the Confab was under the PDP, the APC has been implementing part of the recommendation without giving credit to the source.

“The president had said by 2024 January the loan scheme will become active but here we are in February, nothing yet.

“I’m a Nigerian student doing my postgraduate studies and in touch with all Nigerian students across the country and I’m sure the programme has not commenced.

“I’m not shocked because there are some things the government says to get public sympathy or the president says to make people feel they are on top of their game. That the loan has not been implemented is not in any way a shock or surprise to someone like me.

“It was the same scenario with the COVID-19 palliative; how many Nigerians got it? So, it is not a surprise that the loan scheme has not come into reality.

“We pray that the president will understand that Nigerian students are eager to start benefiting from the loan.

“The loan will eliminate the suffering in the education sector, though there are lots of pros and cons in the scheme. A situation like the payback plan where the government says it’s two years upon your graduation and NYSC, they will start deducting 10 percent of your income.

“It would have been more honourable to say that as long as the government provides you the loan, they should get you a job that will facilitate the payment.

“When you say two years after NYSC they should start paying back the loan, do you have means of getting them a job?

“A lot of Nigerian students have graduated from the tertiary institution for over 10 years without a job. There are a lot of issues to be talked about but let the implementation commence, the lack of commencement at this moment is the biggest challenge.”

On his part, the NANS President, Lucky Emonefe lamented that government officials responsible for the loan have refused to consult with students’ leaders.

He maintained that government officials in charge of the scheme have not lived up to their responsibility.

Speaking with Emonefe said: “Mr President is committed to the scheme and has expanded the loan scheme.

“The only challenge I’m having is that those charged with the responsibility have not lived up to it.

“The Executive Secretary of the loan board was supposed to carry out a stakeholders’ consultation. You want to disburse loans, won’t you meet with the students’ leaders? This is the challenge we are having.

“Mr President said he has expanded it, which is a good one; he has directed the federal Inland Revenue to mobilise, they should consult us. Are they giving the money to animals? No, so they should meet the students first.

“We are yet to meet with them, for them to kick-start the scheme, they must meet with us. They should step up their plans by meeting with the students’ leaders to fast-track things.”

On the repayment clause in the scheme, he said: “The government should look into that. I think the government should give the students about three to five years because unemployment is an issue.

“When we spoke against some of the conditions, the government removed the rigid issue of surety, a perm Sec; that bottleneck was removed. “When there’s a job after two years, the government will monitor the repayment plan.”

OBI AS SHADOW PRESIDENT

President Bola Tinubu needs help at this time to save him from politicians who are running him out of relevance with obnoxious policies. In all this, Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, appears to be the only true friend around.

Obi is the only genuine opposition that all eyes can see. Representing the Labour Party, he has not gone to bed since the end of the 2023 presidential elections. Others may blow hot air as their interests dictate, the leader of the Obidients is consistent.

It took Obi to remind the president that in six months of this administration, Tinubu’s trips have gulped nearly four billion naira. At a time when nearly 195 million compatriots are wallowing in penury, the Presidency should be making money for the people not spending tax payers money on endless journeys.

Credit to Tinubu, he waded in swiftly by reducing the weight of Federal Government delegations to trips outside our shores. I understand that Vice President Kashim Shettima was in Davis, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum in January, accompanied by just five aides.

The National Assembly got a budgetary allocation of about 345 billion naira. It did not matter to many that so much money would be spent on where to park vehicles while workers have continued to receive their salaries much later than usual. Obi raised his voice.

The truth is that Tinubu must be having sleepless nights but some of those working with him are having the fun of their lives. To them, life goes beyond their principal and the people. Money in Abuja is free and life is good, spending liquid cash.

Abuja has now become more attractive to terrorists. They have animated their cells across the country and shown special interest in the erstwhile peaceful South – West Geo Political Zone. Recently, two traditional rulers were killed in Ekiti.

In seven months of the present administration, over 2, 400 Nigerians have been wasted by bandits, kidnappers and other gangs of criminals. About 1,870 citizens were abducted, many of them still in the forests waiting for rescue or ransom to be paid for their freedom.

While insecurity gains momentum, the economy is virtually dead. Never in the History of the naira have we seen such depreciation. Under Idi Amin, someone described the Ugandan currency as ‘shit money’. Zim dollars in Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe was useless. Today, the naira is a little stronger than tissue paper.

As an opposition leader, I saw the power of Tinubu and crowned him the Governor General of Nigerian politics. The Nigerian President is more than a Governor General, I want the president to put politics aside and face the business at hand, which is to rescue the country.

For starters, the president should do away with his Economic Team. They cannot drive this mission. It is easier to manage the Lagos Economy than to face the task of taking Nigeria to a sane level in the global market.

The Tinubu I know, has no permanent enemies. When the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) ruled from outside the fence as opposition party, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was battered from all angles. While she created a stable economy, critics created doom.

In all honesty, Tinubu should invite Okonjo-Iweala to his Aso Villa living room, serve her good drinks and tap from the woman. She knows everything about currency management as a Development Economist and Director General of the World Trade Organisation.

The floor is open already. The WTO boss and Shettima showed their dancing skills in far away Davos. This government should make Nigerians dance. If we have Okonjo-Iweala as a Consultant, for free, the naira should not be useless.

The best gift Tinubu can present to Nigerians on May 29, 2024, is to dissolve his cabinet. Most of his ministers are playing 2027 politics instead of renewing hope. It is a shame that while the president continues to receive negative publicity, his aides are cruising.

I must commend Works minister, Dave Umahi and, you would not believe it, Aviation minister, Festus Keyamo. These gentlemen have faced their jobs religiously and are ready to do more. Before May 2023, it was unlikely to refer to Keyamo as a gentleman.

Tinubu’s publicists are the worst I have seen anywhere. How on Earth could anyone issue that statement from the Presidency after Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS? I am sure Foreign Affairs minister, Yusuf Tuggar is outraged.

The ECOWAS Commission statement showed more maturity and diplomacy, insisting on negotiated solution to counter what came out of the Presidency, which described the withdrawal as irrelevant since the three countries were serving suspension.

In the First Republic, President Nnamdi Azikiwe and Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa did not distance themselves from Opposition Leader Obafemi Awolowo until 1962. In the Second Republic, President Shehu Shagari was open to Zik and Awo.

Obi’s interventions should not scare Tinubu. They make more sense than what the Abuja Kitchen Cabinet will say. Did Mr. President ever believe that Eko will shout ‘ Ebin pa wa’ (we are hungry).

EMEKA OBASI: PHOEMEKA OBASI:

Thirty-five years ago, I was in Switzerland at the HQ of FIFA for the annual meeting on the invitation of the committee that was going to select the 1994 WC host.

Brazil, Morocco, and the USA were the finalists. Brazil’s presentation centered on Maracana as a football shrine, in addition to the traditional elements of football as a national culture. The Brazilian delegation ended their presentation with poetic eloquence of how the “English Boy’s Toy” had become ingrained in the Brazilian national psyche.

Brazil had a few stadia that didn’t meet up with the standards FIFA had stimulated.

For Morocco, the kingdom had just successfully hosted the Cup of Nations in March of 1988, and the King was behind the kingdom of Morocco’s bid. The Moroccan delegation presented 4 stadiums that could pass for the required purposes of hosting a WC event.

They went on to add that 6 other stadiums were under construction, and those sites and standard stadiums will be ready by 1994 for the quadrennial global showcase of football. Morocco was still in the process of negotiating loans from greedy international finance capitalists to complete these stadiums.

FIFA has a policy of not asking host nations to incur public finance debts in order to host the WC. Football should have a multiplier effect and not a drain on scarce national resources. Kindly excuse my macro-economics digression; I got the gist from a highly placed FIFA hosting selection committee member.

Even Joao Havalenge, then FIFA President and a Brazilian was not going to subject Brazil to huge public finance debt spending to showcase the brilliance associated with the “English Boy’s Toy”

The USA delegation presented sixteen world-class stadiums and asked the select committee to choose the best 12 of 16 standard stadiums required to host the WC.

There are obvious reasons as to why the USA will be a fine host. FIFA has been careful and doesn’t want to be branded as too elitist for an organization that has become a rich global phenomenon on the backs of a poor man’s game! FIFA protects its image and doesn’t want to be accused of showing favoritism.

After 32 years of ‘globe-trotting’ the WC as the premier international sportingjamboree, FIFA can be proud of returning to North America this time.

The USA was FIFA’s last frontier, and it wanted to secure a foothold around that gigantic American sports industry. In 1994, the USA didn’t have a thriving local professional football league, a requirement for granting hosting rights.

But FIFA made an exception to that rule on the condition that the USA must establish a professional league. Alas, the MLS was established, and it has thrived.

Major League Soccer, like most contemporary American phenom, is driven by the advantages of a growing and potentially prosperous immigrant population. So the MAGA brigade can take a chill pill and let the game enthusiastically and authentically played with the foot flourish to higher grounds .

Kudos to the USSF, they have delivered on their promise to establish a thriving local professional soccer league.
Juego bonito; long live the beautiful game.

Back to Bouke

By Paul Okoku…

I vividly remember those moments captured in these pictures: One the intensity of one of our training sessions, the other with Rabah Madjer of Algeria, a legend of African football. A legend of world football, and the third, the historic lineup against Algeria in Bouaké, Ivory Coast, during the 1984 AFCON. Each image carries the legacy and spirit of the Super Eagles.

In the teeming heart of Bouaké, Ivory Coast, echoes of the past pulsated through the air when news broke that the Super Eagles would face Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the City of Bouaké. A surge of excitement and adrenaline enveloped me, accompanied by a mix of emotions and moments of relief. Bouaké, a city reminiscent of Super Eagles’ triumphs during the AFCON 1984, held a special place in our football history.

Recalling the group stage of AFCON 1984, the journey was intense. Defeating Ghana fueled our ambitions, followed by a thrilling 2-2 draw against Malawi – a supposedly minnow that gave us quite a scare. Algeria awaited us in the final group match, resulting in a goalless draw amid controversial whispers of accusations of an arranged match or call it match-fixing between Nigeria and Algeria that resulted in the ousting of Ghana from the AFCON 1984 tournament. The lingering question of whether the match was fixed continues to echo through the corridors of history, raising intrigue and speculation even four decades later I still get asked that same question, 40 years later, as a matter of fact, twice this year already. The mysteries of that game persist, creating a narrative that withstands the test of time. Both teams, Nigeria and Algeria played to secure a tie and avoid elimination, adding a unique chapter to our legacy of football history.

The historical triumph in Bouaké and our favorable head-to-head record against South Africa fueled confidence. Dating back to the 10th of October 1992, we’ve met 14 times, with Nigeria winning 7, losing 2, and tying 5 – an impressive record. Yet, acknowledging that historical success doesn’t guarantee victory, Super Eagles should brace themselves for an intense match.

Understanding the expectations on strikers like Victor Osimhen, whose primary role is scoring goals, I appreciate the millions of Nigerians who will be soaked in perspiration from the tension. The anticipation is palpable, and we trust the Super Eagles to deliver, again.

While winning has the power to make us forget the challenges, agony and pain in the nation, Victor Osimhen’s presence on the field adds a unique dimension. Albeit, he has not been scoring goals, however, his ability to make opposing defenders mindful of him creates fear, providing opportunities for other players to capitalize. Osimhen’s workhorse mentality, contributing in various aspects of the game, reflects the team’s commitment to finding ways to win and improving continuously.

Paul Okoku with Algeria’s Rabah Madjer in Bouake, 1984.

As the Super Eagles approach the game, the legacy of true Nigerian champions is at the forefront. Encouraging the Super Eagles to play to instructions, avoid trying to be the hero, let the game come to you, let it flow, and trust one another, I’m confident that their unwavering confidence will translate into a remarkable performance. It’s time to put it all together and soar to victory!

To the Super Eagles’ players, your strength, skill, and spirit make us proud. Go out there, play with heart, and create moments that will echo through time. Nigerians are with you all the way!

I am getting ready for a Cinderella story, Super Eagles! From zero to hero, go ahead and script a legendary tale on the field for your legacy. The magic begins, and the Nigerians across the globe are all cheering for you!

Oh yeah, it reminds me much like a Shakespearean play, this vital soccer game against South Africa takes the center stage, weaving drama, skill, and passion into acts of triumph. On this field, in Bouake, each player becomes a character in the grand narrative of victory. To play or not to play? The answer is clear: Let the game commence!

Bring home the victory.

Court sentences former ABUAD Librarian to 5 years in jail

An Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday sentenced a 40-year-old man, AdedejiOgunleye, to five years imprisonment with hardlabour for stealing and fraud.

The convict was arraigned before Magistrate OlatomiwaDaramola on January 9, 2023, on a two-count charge of stealing and fraud.

Delivering his judgement, the magistrate said: “This court is fortified with the decision, in the case of Mainavs Federal Republic of Nigeria (2022) LPELR-58942 (CA), to deliver this judgement in the absence of the defendant.” Daramola continued, saying: “I find the defendant guilty, and I convict him accordingly. The convict is hereby sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour, or an option of restitution, in the sum of N17.5 million, in favour of ABUAD Bookshop, being the amount this court found to have been stolen by the defendant, in lieu of imprisonment.

“All security agencies are hereby put on alert to apprehend the fugitive wherever and whenever sighted, to serve his term of imprisonment.”

The police prosecutor, Inspector Elijah Adejare, had said that the defendant committed the offence between 2019 and 2022 at ABUAD Bookshop, located along AfeBabalola Way, in Ado-Ekiti.

Adejare said the convict stole and fraudulently obtained the sum of N17.5 million, which was the money accrued from sales of books at the bookshop, and converted it to his personal use, knowing fully well that it is the property of AfeBabalola University, Ado-Ekiti, ABUAD.

He said the offences contravened Sections 302 and 329 (3) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

In his testimony before the court, one of the auditors who testified before the court said that AdedejiOgunleye was employed in the year 2019, towards the end of June 2022.

“We came on invitation to audit him, and during the process, the team discovered sharp practices in his transactions and records; in addition, the money in the bank and books in stock were not commensurate.

“He was issued a query and later handed over to the police for further investigation and his eventual arraignment,” he concluded.

To prove his case, the prosecutor called four witnesses, and tendered auditors’ statements and reports, bookshop receipts and ABUAD bin card, among others as exhibits.

He said the convict, who was granted bail at arraignment, jumped the bail, while all efforts made to prove his innocence before the court, proved abortive.

Gov Soludo Reacts As Anambra Lawyer Inserts Hot Knife Into Househelp’s Private Part

The Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has disclosed that the state has commenced action to ensure that a Lawyer, identified as Adachukwu Chukelu Okafor, who brutalised her 11-year-old househelp is brought to justice.

It was learnt that Adachukwu, who resides in Akpaka, Onitsha, allegedly molested 11-year-old Happiness, whom she brought into her home in January 2024 after contacting her parents to help her get a child who would assist her with house chores.

According to FIJ, the househelp had mistakenly touched the private part of the lawyer’s little son while bathing him, and she inserted a hot knife into her private part as punishment.

The action generated outrage among residents, which led to the lawyer’s ‘disappearance’, and has failed to disclose her whereabouts or respond to calls.

In a statement via his Facebook page, Soludo condemned Adachukwu’s action, stating that she is one of many who do not deserve a place among decent humanity.

He wrote, “Mrs. Adachukwu Chukelu-Okafor who visibly violated the young girl left in her custody is one out of many who do not deserve a place amongst decent humanity. We have commenced actions to ensure she is brought to justice.

“This should serve as a firm warning to all abusers of any kind, that Anambra State is not a place where their excesses will be condoned. Child’s Right Act (2003) and Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act (2017) have long been domesticated in Anambra together with other laws, and my administration is big on entrenching Law and Order as a foundation for building the liveable and prosperous homeland that we all seek.

“It is the highest sign of weakness to abuse or violate the vulnerable. This, and others like it, can not be tolerated in the Anambra State we are building.”

Jubilation in Anambra community as court-reinstated executive leaders

There was jubilation in Nawfia Community, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State yesterday, as leaders of the community, who were previously sacked by the state government returned to office after a court judgment.

An Anambra High Court sitting in Ogidi recently overruled the Anambra State government, by returning the executive leaders of the community to office, after they were sacked.

At the maiden meeting of the newly installed executive, indigenes of the community expressed happiness, saying that the reinstatement was a sign that the government’s decision to remove them in the first place was wrong.

President General of the newly reinstated executive, Mr Nathan Enemuo who presided over the meeting assured that the leadership of the community will ensure peace in the community.

“We will continue to work to ensure peace in the community. Having been reinstated, our tenure will elapse in the next 47 days, and we are working to ensure the smooth election of another set of executives,” he said.

The meeting was attended by several personalities in the community, including the traditional ruler of the community, priests and religious, among other indigenes.

The community had been in crisis, following a leadership tussle, which had broken it into factions, with each running parallel leadership.

Police teargas Michael Okpara varsity students for protesting tuition fee hike

Some Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) students in Abia shut down the institution yesterday to protest the tuition fee hike.

The angry students stormed different halls in the university. They chased out students taking their first semester examinations, damaging glasses and other property at the university Senate Building, the secretariat of the Students Union Government, the library, the microfinance bank, the main gate and others.

The aggrieved students sang anti-management songs such as ‘VC Iwe, reverse our school fees’, ‘Say no to extortion’, and ‘Allow us to write our examinations’.They also barricaded the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road, specifically at the university main gate, thereby disrupting vehicular movement.

Shop owners on the highway quickly closed their shops for fear of protesters attacking them.

It took the intervention of the police to disperse the protesters with tear gas and gunshots into the air.

Some of the students who spoke on the condition of anonymity said they were protesting against the insensitivity of the vice-chancellor, Maduebibisi Iwe, and his management of the students’ plight.

“We started our first semester examination Monday and the vice chancellor came to the hall and sent out those who have not paid their school fees.

“They increased our school fees twice in 2023; some of us were paying about N50,000, but it is now between N120,000 and N150,000. The vice chancellor insisted that students must pay it at once, even when we begged them to allow us to pay in two instalments for the two semesters,’’ one of the protesters said.

Another student said, “Some of us were stopped from writing the examination because our names were yet to appear after doing our biometrics.

“The management introduced the compulsory bio-data for students this semester, and it is still ongoing, but they said that no student will write an examination without it.”

Some protesting students, who said they were final year students, complained that the management’s actions would make it impossible for them to graduate with their set.

Efforts to speak with the SUG president, Emmanuel Chjioke, failed as neither he nor his executive members could be seen or reached.

Also, the vice-chancellor could not be reached for comments.

The motion was sponsored by the member representing the Onuimo Constituency, James Esile (APC), who said erosion had almost destroyed the major road in the area.

He prayed the House to urge the governor to direct the state Ministry of Works and Environment to visit and tackle the erosion site, as well urged the Ministry to provide logistics support to carry out palliative works on the road, while finding a permanent solution.

Supporting the motion, the member representing Ehime Mbano, Benard Ozoemelam (APC), stated that palliative measures should be taken before the rainy season.

Chisom Ojukwu of Nkwerre (APC) urged the motion’s sponsor to liaise with representatives of the area in the National Assembly for more impact.

In his contribution, the Chief Whip, Chigozie Nwaneri (APC-Oru East), said that erosion menace was much in the state.

He suggested that officials of the Imo Ministry of Works and Environment should visit all erosion sites in the state for necessary actions.

Fed Govt bans alcoholic beverages in small sachets

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has banned alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets that are smaller than 200ml.

The agency said the five-year window given to the manufacturers of the products to stop producing them in sachets and pet bottles, which began in 2018, elapsed on January 31, this year.

NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, announced the ban while addressing reporters recently in Abuja.

The NAFDAC boss said the enforcement of the ban took effect on February 1, which

was not a sudden development but the outcome of a multilateral committee which agreed that the ban would be in phases whereby production would be reduced by 50 per cent by 2020 while outright ban would take place on January 31, 2024, this year. Given the decision, Adeyeye said NAFDAC did not issue renewal licences exceeding last month to any manufacturer of the products.

According to her, the agency took the route of wiping out the drinks in such sachets because of the negative effects on underage children.

The NAFDAC boss explained that since the drinks are packaged in pocket-friendly sizes, accessible, and affordable, children easily fall for the packages and face the consequences.

She said: “This decision was based on the recommendation of a high-powered committee of the Federal Ministry of Health and NAFDAC on one hand, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and the Industry represented by the Association of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Employers (AFBTE), Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN), in December 2018, on the other hand. “As commitment to the decision reached at the end of this committee’s meeting, producers of alcohol in sachets and small volume agreed to reduce the production by five per cent with effect from January 31, 2022 while ensuring the product is completely phased out in the country by January 31, 2024.”

According to her, the future of the country supersedes other considerations in the enforcement of the policy.

The NAFDAC boss stressed that saving Nigerian children and protecting the health of the larger society was paramount to the agency.

She added: “The people who are mostly at risk of the negative effect of consumption of the banned pack sizes of alcoholic beverages are the under-aged and commercial vehicle drivers and riders.

“The World Health Organisation (WHO) has established that children who drink alcohol are more likely to use drugs, get bad grades, suffer injury or death, engage in risky sexual activity, make bad decisions and have health problems.

“The WHO also stated that harmful consumption of alcohol is linked to more than 200 health conditions, including infectious diseases (tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS) and non-communicable conditions (liver cirrhosis and different types of cancer).

“It is also associated with social problems, such as alcohol addiction and gender-based violence. “To curb the menace of abuse of alcohol, the WHO recommended some actions and strategies to policy makers that have shown to be effective and cost-effective. These include: regulating the marketing of alcoholic beverages (in particular to younger people) and regulating and restricting the availability of alcohol.”

EFCC arrest ex-aviation minister’s brother over N8 billion fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Abubakar Ahmad Sirika, the younger brother of former Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika, on suspicion of corruption.

The arrest, which took place on Sunday, is linked to an ongoing investigation into the awarding of aviation ministry contracts.

EFCC alleges that while Hadi Sirika served as minister, he conspired to abuse his office and divert public funds totaling N8,069,176,864.

This allegedly occurred through four aviation contracts awarded to Engirios Nigeria Limited, a company owned by his younger brother.

Sources within the EFCC alleged that Sirika awarded the contracts to his brother, despite knowing he was a civil servant, violating the regulations

The contracts included the construction of a terminal building in Katsina Airport, establishment of a fire truck maintenance center, procurement of equipment for Aviation House, and purchase of an aircraft simulator for the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology.

The anti-graft agency said the first contracts from the former minister to Engirios Nigeria Limited was on August 18, 2022 for the construction of terminal building in Katsina Airport, at the cost of N1,345,586,500.

The second was awarded on November 3, 2022 for the establishment of fire truck maintenance and refurbishment centre in Katsina Airport, valued at N3.8 billion.

The third contract was on February 3, 2023 for the procurement and instalment of lifts, air conditioners and power generator’s house in Aviation House, Abuja, at the cost of N615 million while the fourth was awarded on May 5, 2023 for the procurement of Magnus Aircraft and simulator for Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria at the cost of N2.2 billion.

The source also claimed that after receiving N3.2 billion from the ministry, Engirios Nigeria Limited transferred the funds to various companies and individuals, with no evidence of work completed on any of the contracted projects.

Abubakar is currently in EFCC custody, reportedly providing information about the financial activities of the aviation ministry under his brother’s tenure, the source added.

Last year, the former minister was also summoned to the EFCC office over the controversial Nigeria Air project, which he claimed had allegedly gulped N3 billion
