Uzodimma calls for comprehensive audit of power sector

By Jennifer John…

Imo State governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma has called for a comprehensive audit of the decisions taken in the Nigerian power sector in the past, to ascertain where the country got it right and where it didn’t get it right.

Uzodimma made this assertion at the Old Lodge Enugu, yesterday during the Light Up Nigeria programme flagged off by the Vice President, Kashim Shettima.

He noted that from 1999 to 2007, the Federal Government of Nigeria spent over $13bn from taxpayers’ money to develop the power sector, adding that presently in 2024, 78 percent of the homes and industries in the country have no access to electricity, concluding that something is definitely wrong.

He pointed out that 85 percent of industries in the South East has closed down, due to lack of power, a zone he enthused, is richly endowed by God with natural resources and whose citizens he described as enterprising, industrious and hardworking.

Uzodimma wondered how Nigerians expect President Bola Tinubu to solve the problem of power that has lingered for 45 years in seven months.

The Imo State Governor challenged the managers of the power sector in Nigeria to wake up and give Nigerians light, as according to him, a lot of money had been spent from taxpayers money for the sector.

He said: “Today a bag of cement is N13,000, if we have power in Nkalagu, Nigercem will be working, if we have power in Enugu, the Coal company will be working. Our Rail system is still working in the ancient manner, because of lack of power”.

Rivers police probe woman’s attempted sale of five-year-old boy

The Rivers State Police Command said it is investigating an alleged attempt by a woman to sell her five-year-old son in Port Harcourt.

It was gathered that the woman identified as Onyiye took the boy to a popular market in Bishop Okoye Street in the Mile 3 axis of Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Drama however ensued when some traders confronted the woman and realised her true intentions which she attributed to hardship.

The traders who doubted if the child was hers however took the woman to the police station to report the matter, leading to the latter’s arrest.

One of the traders who pleaded anonymity said, “The way I see the woman I don’t think she is woman normal because of how she was acting.”

When contacted on Monday, the spokesperson for the state Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the incident, saying the matter is being investigated. She stated, “The woman was brought to the station by some persons who alleged she came to the market to sell her child.

“We are investigating the matter to ascertain the veracity of the eyewitness’ claims. Meanwhile, the woman is still with the police.”

Security Operatives Rescue 16 Abducted Passengers In Kogi

Security operatives have rescued 16 kidnapped victims from their abductors in Kogi State.

Spokesperson of the Kogi Police Command, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, described the rescue operation as “very swift and pragmatic.”

Eleven of the victims, he said, were passengers from Peace Mass Transit Bus, while five from Sienna Bus were reportedly abducted on Sunday, February 25, along Ette Enugu-Ezike Road and taken to the bush.

Ovye-Aya, who said no arrest had been made, vowed to apprehend the suspects and bring them to face justice.

According to him, security operatives were out there combing the bush to arrest the culprits in order to bring them to book. “We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that kidnappers are arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

As security operatives, we are out to arrest the menace of kidnapping and other criminal activities in Kogi and the country as a whole.

“Already, our Commissioner of Police in Kogi Command, Bethrand Onuoha, is happy with the rescue operation and has commended the Joint security team,” he said. Ovye-Aya appealed to the good people of the state for their continued collaboration with the Police and other security agencies in ensuring adequate security of lives and property in Kogi State.

IPOB faults Kanu’s continuous trial

The Indigenous People of Biafra has rejected further court trials of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that it stands by the judgment of the Appeal court, which ordered Kanu not to be tried anymore in any Nigerian court.

A Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday fixed March 19, 2024, to rule on the fresh bail application filed by the embattled IPOB leader.

The court also scheduled March 20, for the commencement of the resumed trial.

The trial judge, Justice Binta Nyanko adjourned after listening to the argument by counsel to parties in the matter.

Trial resumed on the matter on Monday after being suspended by the Court of Appeal which discharged and acquitted Kanu in October 2022.

The appellate court also declared illegal and unlawful, the rendition of Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria and quashed the entire terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government. But in a statement on Monday by the spokesman, Emma Powerful, the pro-Biafran group called on President Bola Tinubu to unconditionally release Kanu and other IPOB members in various detention facilities across the country.

The group said, “Recall that the Supreme Court justices on December 15, 2023, sent the case of Kanu back to the High Court. The same High Court fixed February 8, 2024, to commence hearing on the matter or matters. But on the said date the Federal Government refused to appear in court.

“Refusing to make an appearance on that day showed that the Federal Government has no cogent reason to either prosecute Kanu and should unconditionally release him.

“IPOB leadership has reviewed the actions of the Federal Government and the legal system and we totally stand on no further trial of our leader in the High Court or any other court.

“No matter what the Federal Government does today, we stand by the Appeal court ‘discharged and acquitted’ pronounced on our leader. They know very well that they have no case against him or the organisation that he leads.

“Our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was illegally abducted and detained for almost two years between 2015 and 2017. In 2021, our leader was again abducted, tortured, and extraordinarily renditioned to Nigeria. For three years since 2021, our leader has again been remanded to solitary confinement in the Nigeria DSS dungeon, which adds up to five years of persecution.

“Irrespective of all the judiciary rigmarole, eventually, some courageous honourable Justices in the Appeal Court in Abuja on October 13, 2022, delivered a landmark Judgment that history will never forget. The Court, in its ruling, discharged and acquitted Mazi Nnamdi Kanu of all the trumped-up charges based on the illegal abduction and extraordinary rendition by the Federal Government.

“Instead of the Federal Government to obey the ruling of the Court of Appeal, they decided to intimidate the honourable Justices by transferring them out of Abuja jurisdiction to different areas of the country.”

The group said in view of the above scenarios and other considerations, the IPOB family worldwide, therefore, firmly stands on “no more court trial of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu”.

“We call on President Bola Tinubu to unconditionally release our leader and other innocent IPOB members in various detention facilities across the country.”

Maritime workers to shut seaports for NLC protest

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria said it will join the two-day nationwide protest being organisedby the Nigeria Labour Congress.

This was contained in a statement yesterday by the Head of Media, MWUN, KennedyIkemefuna.

Ikemefuna said the move was necessary following the directive of NLC that its affiliate members across the nation should strictly comply.

It was reported that on February 16, the NLC announced the nationwide protest scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday over the alleged government’s failure to implement agreements reached between both parties on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

The decision followed the conclusion of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to implement measures against the widespread hardship.

Ikechukwu said, “The MWUN would join the Nigeria Labour Congress’s two-day nationwide protest holding on the 27-28th of February 2024, as directed by the congress after its NEC-in-session meeting held on Monday, in Abuja, directing all its affiliate members across the nation to strictly comply.”

He added that the protest is coming against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s refusal to honour the October 2023 agreement signed with the congress.

“The congress believes that if the agreement had been honoured and implemented, it would have gone a long way to ameliorate the sufferings and hardships of the ill-conceived and ill- ill-implemented policies have brought upon Nigerian Workers and the citizenry of the country,” Ikechukwu said.

He also added that the MWUN as an affiliate of the NLC would comply with the NLC directive.

Hardship: ‘Import food’ – TUC advises Tinubu

The Trade Union Congress, TUC, has offered solutions to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration on how to end Nigeria’s raging economic hardship.

TUC said the government must immediately import food from abroad to end the ongoing hunger crisis in Nigeria.

President of TUC, Festus Osifo, disclosed this during a press conference on the economic hardship ravaging the country yesterday in Abuja.

Osifo lamented that Nigerians have never witnessed this level of hardship before, even during military regimes, adding that the problems are not unconnected to the government’s poor patronage of locally made products and services and lack of capable hands at the helm of affairs.

“Nigerians must live to see tomorrow before we can understand how beautiful a government policy is. The national pride of striving to achieve food sufficiency locally should be temporarily relaxed. Governments at all levels should immediately purchase sufficient quantities of food items from around the world and share them with vulnerable Nigerians.

“Importing food abroad at this point will assist to reduce the hyper-inflation of food in the country. Federal Government should allow importation of food items for Nigerians consumption within the next two weeks, ”Osifo said.

The TUC president advised President Bola Tinubu to, as a matter of urgency, strengthen the economic management team of his administration and also look beyond party or tribal lines to headhunt the best Nigerians throughout the world who could sit down and develop homegrown solutions to the hardship menace.

It would be recalled that the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, had insisted on nationwide protests on February 27 and 28 over economic hardship.

Niger, Kogi, Lagos, and Oyo states had witnessed protests over the country’s economic challenges in recent times.

Niger Delta group backs Obasanjo’s position on rising oil theft

A Niger Delta group, the Movement for the Sustainable Development of the Niger Delta, MSDND, has thrown its weight behind the position put forward by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the volume of crude oil allegedly stolen from the Niger Delta region. Obasanjo had attributed the poor state of Nigeria’s economy to the nation’s intentional poor record keeping on the production of crude oil.

He also noted that 80 per cent of crude oil produced in the country is stolen, thereby preventing the nation from attaining its OPEC quota.

The MSDND, through its Publicity Secretary, Kelvin Orughoe, pointed out that Obasanjo’s position was a clear statement based on intelligence and in-depth knowledge of the failed battles against crude oil theft in the country. He added, “It is time for President Bola Tinubu to borrow the cue and take the bull by the horn. “The people stealing our crude oil are not along the creeks and waterways of the Niger Delta region. The crude oil theft is being coordinated and carried out by cartels collaborating with both state and non-state actors.”

Orughoe said that investigations by the group revealed that senior government officials in the petroleum sector know what is going on and have lots of questions to answer.

“If President Tinubu is serious about combating crude oil theft and not just tough talk made for media propaganda, then he should immediately request to meet with these ex-militant leaders because they have the masterplan in their possession on how to resolve the menace of crude oil theft across the Niger Delta region within thirty (30) days at zero cost to the Federal Government.

“President Bola Tinubu had said that his administration is making efforts to raise at least $10 billion USD to increase FX liquidity to stabilise the Naira. This was the same story that the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL, used to justify its involvement in the controversial $3.3 billion crude oil pre-payment loan it signed with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in

August 2023 which did not work as planned, because we are all witness to the fact that the forex exchange rates has worsened,” he added.

Court remands artisan for defiling 11-year-old girl

Crying child after defilement

The Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State yesterday remanded a 39-year-old man, Prosper Ebhoze, in a correctional centre for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl.

Mr Ebhoze, who resides at No 14, Oke-Owo, off Oka-Omo Street. Alapere- Ketu, Lagos, is charged with defilement.

The Chief magistrate, M.O Tanimola, who did not take Mr Ebhoze’s plea, adjourned the case until March 13 for legal advice from the office of the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions.

Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Insp Donjour Perezi, told the court that Mr Ebhoze committed the offence at noon on Oja-Omo Street. Alapere, Ketu, Lagos. Mr Perezi said the girl was sent home from school to get some items.

He said the minor went to her father’s shop to inform her father; unfortunately, she didn’t find him in his workshop, but she saw the defendant, who is her father’s apprentice. “He took her to a corner, covered her mouth and defiled her. He also threatened to kill,” Mr Perezi said.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

Residents protest economic hardship in Lagos

Yesterday, hundreds of residents in Lagos State staged a protest over hunger and the rising cost of living in the country.

It was reported that the protesters, mostly youths, led by a human rights group, the “Take It Back Movement”, marched through Ojuelegba under the bridge area of Lagos, displaying placards.

However, there is a heavy presence of armed police officers to forestall any possible violence.

It would be recalled that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, had warned on Sunday, that anyone found infringing on the rights of others would be dealt with lawfully.

The police boss advised against any action capable of grounding commercial activities and obstructing the free flow of traffic in Lagos State.

Fayoade assured residents of Lagos State that necessary security measures had been put in place to protect lives and property with or without any protest.

He said officers and men had been deployed to ensure the free flow of traffic and ensure a peaceful environment for the conduct of lawful engagements.

Aba makes history as Tinubu inaugurates Geometric Power plant today

Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, will today make history, as President Bola Tinubu commissions Geometric power plant, the first integrated power plant in Nigeria, situated at Osisioma Industrial area of Aba.

In preparation for the commissioning of the Power plant, Turbine three was turned on at 3.39pm on Sunday, February 25, 2024, leading to massive rejoicing by Geometric Power engineers and their KS Energy counterparts.

The 181-megawatt Geometric Power plant was originally scheduled for inauguration on Saturday, February 24, by President Bola Tinubu.

Aba Power Limited Electric, the newest electricity distribution company (DISCO), in Nigeria, will take electricity from the new plant and supply to 9 of the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State.

Described as the biggest investment in the South-East Zone of Nigeria, Geometric Power has spent about $800 million on its integrated power project, which includes building of 27-kilometre natural gas pipeline, from Owaza in Ukwa West LGA in Abia State, to the Osisioma Industrial Layout in Aba.

“We have, in addition, installed 150,000 kilometres of cables and wires and installed four new power substations, as well as refurbished three others inherited from the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN”, explained Ben Caven, managing director, Geometric Power Ltd.

The Geometric Power Group was founded by Bart Nnaji, a professor and former Minister of Power.

Nnaji, embarked on the integrated project after James Wolfensohn, a former World Bank President and then Nigeria’s Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iwea lavisted Aba, on March 17, 2004, and discovered that the greatest challenge facing both large-scale and medium-scale industrialists in Aba, reputed to be the centre of indigenous manufacturing in Nigeria, is epileptic power supply.

Both Wolfensohn and Okonjo-Iweala appealed to Nnaji to assist with a power plant dedicated to Aba, following the 22MW Abuja Emergency Power Plant he led a team of Nigerian engineers to build in Abuja, from 2000 to 2001 that supplied uninterrupted power to critical places, like the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Company, the Central Bank headquarters, the Aso Rock and the entire Central Business District of Abuja.

Patrick Umeh, a former executive with the Los Angeles Water and Light in the United States, who later served as Commissioner in-charge of Markets, Market Rates and Competition, at the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), described the tubular poles mounted by Geometric Power in Aba and the environs, as incomparable in Africa.

“Only in cities like Tokyo and San Francisco in California you have facilities of this quality and sizes.

“Much as they are tall, as all of us can see, the tubular poles here are actually about 10 meters deep.

“In other words, in the unlikely event of a natural disaster, like earthquake in Aba or the environs, Aba Power and the Geometric Group will still be able to supply electricity to its numerous customers”.

‘Electricity was rarely available in Aba and when it was available it was so poor that it couldn’t power your household appliances, let alone industrial machines,” Alphonsus Udeigbo, president general, Aba Landlords Protection and Development Association (ALPANDA) said.

For Andy Ubah Obasi, a former president, Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ACCIMA), takeover of Aba, by Geometric Power Limited, will incite industrialisation in the entire South-East region and Nigeria at large.

According to him, “The feeling of the business community is that this is long overdue. Most people know how useful and beneficial power is to industrialisation. Geometric has always been there for the past 16 -years and the business community has being anxiously waiting for this and we are glad that it has finally arrived”.

The inauguartion of the Geometric Power plant, will mark a new dawn in the country, not just in Aba or Abia State, according to Alexander Maduakor, president, Association of Aba Industrialists. “We are proud of the support the Federal Government has of late been giving to the Geometric Power Limited, the only group in Nigeria that will generate and distribute its own power.

CJN swears in 11 new Supreme Court Justice …warns them against allowing their personal ambition to becloud their sense of judgement

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola on Monday, swore in 11 new Justices to the bench of the Supreme Court, charging them not to allow their personal ambition to cloud their sense of judgement.

He said the interaction of the new Justices with people of unviable inclinations and pedigree, if any, must be halted forthwith and they should  allow their conscience to guide and filter every of the thought that tranvases their mind.

Speaking further at the swearing-in ceremony held at the main Courtroom of the Supreme Court, the CJN told the new Justices to be prepared of criticisms or verbal assaults by litigants who have lost cases as Justices of the final Court of the land, where appellants’ expectations are often very high and infectious.

“There is no way you can please human beings, especially litigants. The easiest way to fail in life is by trying to please everyone. The only deity you can fear, is the Almighty God”, he said and added that, “Once your judgement is in consonance with what God expects from you, and is also in accordance with the Constitution, you should consider yourself the happiest and freest person on earth”.

The CJN told the new Justices that their elevation to the Supreme Court Bench is in recognition of their astuteness and evident passion for hard work, which is the hallmark of judicial excellence

Justice Ariwoola said administering oath of office to the 11 new Justices was unprecedented in the annals of the Nigerian Supreme Court and recalled his speech last year, where he lamented that the inability of the Court to meet up the statutory full complement of 21 Justices had lingered on for too long and promised to break the jinx.

He told the new Justices that they are coming to join the Supreme Court Bench at a time when the rank had been grossly depleted to an all-time low of ten Justices for a number of reasons, mainly retirement and deaths.

He urged them to put in their best as seasoned judicial officers transiting from the Court of Appeal and had established remarkable acquitances with judicial oath and roles guiding the conduct of judicial officers.

“Your moral uprightness, integrity and respect for the constitution and other extant laws in operation, must be unwavering and unassailable”, he said and urged the new Justices to see themselves as the representatives of God on earth, because “any judgement given at this level can only be upturned in heaven”.

The newly sworn-in Supreme Court Justices are5Justice HarunaTsammani (Northeast), who chaired the Presidential Election Petition Court, Justice Moore Adumein (South-South), Justice JummaiSankey (North-central), Justice ChidiebereUwa (South-east); and Justice ChiomaNwosu-Iheme (South-east).

Others are Justice ObandeOgbuinya (South-East), Justice Stephen Adah (North-Central), Justice HabeebAbiru (South-West), Justice JamiluTukur (Northwest), Justice Abubakar Umar (Northwest) and Justice Mohammed Idris (North-Central).

Implement Argentina’s Reform To Tackle Economic Hardship – Atiku To Tinubu

Atiku, who attributed the hardship in Nigeria to President Tinubu, pointed out that, unlike his Argentine counterpart, the Nigerian President has refused to roll up his sleeves and do the work he signed up for.

The 2023 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar has advised President Bola Tinubu to implement Argentina’s President, Javier Milei’s type of economic reform in tackling current economic crisis in the country.

In a statement titled “Argentina’s Javier Milei approach to reforms should serve as a lesson for Tinubu,” Atiku emphasised on Sunday; that Tinubu and Milei inherited a disoriented economy, but each applied different measures for recovery.

He said, “Both leaders inherited a disoriented economy, but both applied different measures to recovery. President Javier Milei of Argentina was sworn into office on 10 December 2023. He inherited a worse condition than Nigeria’s. But what he did to return his country to a place where investors are ‘starting to believe’ should serve as a lesson to Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu.”

Atiku, who attributed the hardship in Nigeria to President Tinubu, pointed out that, unlike his Argentine counterpart, the Nigerian President has refused to roll up his sleeves and do the work he signed up for.

The former vice president stated “Nigeria is where we are today simply because of what Tinubu has done or did not do. His shifting the blame on the opposition and, even ridiculously, his predecessor is needless and myopic. Market forces don’t play politics. They respond to your actions and inactions.

“President Milei’s major campaign promise was to reposition the Argentine economy after years of slow growth, high debt levels, triple-digit inflation (160 per cent when he took over the Presidency in December 2023), and a 40 per cent poverty rate. His first task was to begin implementing measures to achieve greater macroeconomic stability and promote higher global competitiveness.”

Atiku explained that President Milei entered office with a comprehensive stabilisation plan aimed at implementing far-reaching measures within the context of a market-oriented economy.

“He started off cutting government expenditure by cutting the size of government and wastages; blocked stealing of government funds, and attracted Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through concessions, tax holidays, and improved ease of doing business, Atiku stated.

The statement read in part “Argentina’s Milei did not build the largest government like Tinubu did at a time when our economy was and still on its knees. The examples set by President Milei are the requirement of leadership in a time when the economy has begun to fail the expectations of the people.

“The reforms so far implemented by the Tinubu administration are ad hoc and hurriedly put together without proper review. Ours is unlike Argentina’s Milei, who is sequencing his reforms. President Milei anticipates the after-reform shocks and admits that things will be tough for the people. But he is fully prepared for the aftershocks and has in place mitigating pills. He walks the talk. He sacrifices himself by giving up the perks of office.

“Conversely, Tinubu in Nigeria increased the number of ministers and ministries and is spending enormous resources renovating houses for himself, his deputy, and the first lady. That is nothing short of Nero playing the fiddle while Rome is on fire!

“Worse still, Tinubu has refused to roll up his sleeves and do the work that he signed up for. Instead, he and his team are preoccupied with behaving like Napoleon and Squealer, characters in the satire book Animal Farm, who made it a state policy to scapegoat Snowball (the opposition) for their own failures arising from their ill-advised policies.

“I am attracted to the reforms in Argentina because Javier Milei’sstabilisation plan bears a similar emblem to my Recover Nigeria Plan. It is a plan that I am more than willing to disclose details of its workings with the current government in order to take Nigeria out of the depth of hunger and anger that we find ourselves in.

“Unless, and until there are clear-cut policies and pathways to economic rejuvenation predicated on a leadership-led sacrifice, there will be discontentment, especially among the youths, which may find expression in protests and for which it will be silly to continue to blame the opposition for.”

Soludo under fire over sack of vendors, destruction of newspapers

A group, Forum of Labour Party 2023 House of Assembly candidates, has berated Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo over what it described as dictatorial’ tendencies of his two-years administration.

The group, in a statement by its spokesperson, Humphrey Iloh, advised Soludo’s  administration to desist from further humiliating, intimidating, impoverishing and killing of people of the State.

It said the advice followed recent destruction of newspaper stands and beating of newspaper vendors in Awka, as well as alleged brutal killing of one Mr. Arinze Obuladike, at Ogbo-ogwu, Onitsha by Special Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad (SASA).

The group threatened to compel the House of Assembly to commence impeachment process on the Governor if the ugly trend continues.

The statement reads: “We the members of the Forum of Labour Party 2023 House of Assembly Candidates condemn in its entirety these double tragic and unfortunate acts by Prof. Soludo-led Government and other previous actions, which is a clear indication that Anambra State is now under a DICTATORIAL REGIME.

“The Anambra State of today was not the friendly and peaceful Anambra that the previous Governments left for Prof. ChukwumaSoludo.

“His current style of governance is totally against Section 14(2) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which declares that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of Government.

“We advise the Soludo-led Government to desist from further humiliating, Intimidating, Impoverishing and Killing of Ndi-Anambra.

“Otherwise, we would be left with no option than to approach the court and seek for an Order to compel the House of Assembly to commence impeachment process on the Governor, to rescue Ndi-Anambra from this Dictatorial regime.”

Reacting, spokesman for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Tony Olisa, dismissed the allegations as fallacious and targeted at discrediting Soludo-led administration.

“The claims of the destruction of newspaper stands and beating of vendors in Awka on February 15, 2024, are entirely false. Our government upholds the freedom of the press and respects the rights of all individuals to conduct their businesses without fear of reprisal.

“The incident in Ogbo-ogwu, Onitsha, on February 16, 2024, involving the alleged killing of one MrArinzeObuladike by the Special Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad, is baseless. The SASA, which the Labour Party Forum acknowledged does not bear arms, couldn’t have shot a stray bullet killing the said drug dealer.

“SASA operates within the confines of the law and does not engage in extrajudicial activities. The Labour Party Forum should desist from politicising the incident. We condemn the spread of misinformation and the attempt to discredit our government with unfounded allegations,” he said.

SERAP sues govs, Wike over alleged missing N40tn LGA allocations

SERAP

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against Nigeria’s governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Mr NyesomWike “over their failure to account for the alleged missing N40 trillion federal allocations meant for local governments in the states and the FCT.”

The suit followed the damning revelations by former president MuhammaduBuhari who in December 2022 stated that, “If the money from the Federation Account to the State is about N100m, N50m will be sent to the chairman but he will sign that he received N100 million. The chairman will pocket the balance and share it.”

In the suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/231/2024 filed last Friday at the Federal High Court, Abuja, SERAP was asking the court to “direct and compel the governors to publish details of LGA allocations and actual disbursement of the allocations to local governments in their respective states from 1999 to date.

” SERAP is also asking the court to “compel and direct MrWike to publish details of federal allocations meant for the Area Councils in the FCT and the actual disbursement of the allocations to the Area Councils in the FCT from 1999 to date.

”In the suit, SERAP is arguing that, “The Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], the Freedom of Information Act, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights impose transparency obligations on the governors and MrWike to publish the details of LGA allocations and actual disbursement in their states and the FCT.”

SERAP is arguing that, “State governors and MrWike cannot hide under the excuse that the Freedom of Information Act is not applicable to their states and the FCT. The legal obligations to publish the information sought are also imposed by the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.”

According to SERAP, “It is in the public interest and the interest of justice to grant this application. Nigerians are entitled to their constitutionally and internationally recognized human right to information.”

SERAP is also arguing that, “Transparency in the actual disbursement and spending of federal allocations meant for local governments is fundamental to increase accountability, prevent corruption, and build trust in democratic institutions, and strengthen the rule of law.”

SERAP is also arguing that, “States and the FCT should be guided by transparency and accountability principles and proactively publish information pertaining to their actual disbursement and spending of federal allocations meant for local governments.”

The suit filed on behalf of SERAP by its lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare, Kehinde Oyewumi and Andrew Nwankwo, read in part: “Opacity in the amounts of federal allocations actually disbursed to local governments in the states and FCT has continued to have negative impacts on the fundamental interests of the citizens.

Obasanjo: Over 80% of Nigeria’s Crude Oil is stolen

Onasanjo

Former President OlusegunObasanjo stated that one of the reasons why Nigeria’s economy is in ruins is that while other oil-producing countries have records of their oil production, Nigeria cannot account for hers due to theft.

This is coming as a former Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and ex-Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Prof. AngoAbdullahi, has passed a judgment on Nigeria’s leadership, saying it has failed the people.

Abdullahi added that there was a need for the country to be rescued from the leadership deficit.

They spoke yesterday in Abuja during the launching of a book titled, ‘Court and Politics,’ written by Dr. Umar Ardo, a former associate of the ex-Vice President, AtikuAbubakar.

Obasanjo, who was represented by a former governor of Niger State, BabangidaAliyu, wondered why the Nigerian economy would not be in ruins when, according to him, over 80 percent of her crude oil is stolen.

Obasanjo said while the crude oil quota is about two million barrels per day, over 1.7 million are stolen.

On whether Nigeria should go back to the parliamentary system, or continue with the presidential system, Obasanjo said there is nothing wrong with the presidential system, only that Nigerians do not play by the rules.

He called for a proper political culture, adding that no system is cast in gold.

Speaking as the chairman of the occasion, Abdullahi said: “Enough of our failures. Something else must give way to our failures. We have failed this country. This must stop”.

He also said: “Time has come for us to go back to the drawing boards to rescue this country.

The former chairman NEF lamented that Nigeria with a population of over 200 million people is struggling to generate 4,000 megawatts of power.

Narrating his encounter with an elder statesman, AminuDantata, Abdullahi said Dantata was angry with northerners because they failed the North.

According to him, “Enough is enough of our failure; we must agree that we failed enough.

“I visited Dantata and he was very angry with me, saying the people of the North have failed the North and Nigeria. Until the North accepts that they have failed the North and sit together to discuss the way forward, there won’t be progress.

“We gathered in 1978 when we wanted to return to civilian rule. We were to discuss why the system of 1961 failed but we were shocked when they said the parliamentary system of government was not going to be discussed and that we should go for the federal system of government. And they gave us two options: that of the French and America. And now we have practised the presidential system for 24 years and it has failed and I will score it F9.

“Time has come for us to go back to the drawing board so that we can save this country,” Abdullahi stated.

The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, (MMWG), a body of Muslim professionals in various fields, has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of an Islamic cleric who wanted the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, killed because she is a Christian.

The group, in a statement signed by its National Coordinator Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi and made available to our correspondent in Abuja, said the security agencies should act without further delay owing to a viral video circulating in the social media space on the provocative utterances of the cleric, describing him as “one of the bad elements in Nigerian society and not a true scholar of Islam.”

MMWG maintained that “at this trying period of the nation, some irresponsible, incorrigible, and unpatriotic elements must not be allowed to use religion to cause chaos in Nigeria.”

Reflecting on the teachings of Islam regarding Jews and Christians, the group stated categorically that the Holy Qur’an revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) described them as Ahlul-Kitab, meaning “The People of the Book,” and Muslims are enjoined to live with them in peace and tranquility.

It further explained that “The People of the Book” means those who believe in the book revealed to Prophet Moses (i.e., Al-Taorah) and Jesus Christ (i.e., Injil, The Bible).

“There is nowhere in the Holy Qur’an or Hadith where harming or killing of Jews, Christians, and even unbelievers is permitted. God said we should continue to live together in peace and harmony. In the lifetime of the Holy Prophet Muhammad in Madina, the Holy Prophet allowed the Christians to worship in their way in his Mosque during the course of a community meeting which brought Muslims and Christians together,” MMWG maintained.

The group, therefore, appealed to the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, to set necessary machinery in motion to deal with erring Islamic preachers anywhere in the country in order to restore sanity to Islamic propagation, adding that Muslim leaders should use the corrective mechanism in the apex body to check the recklessness of some undesirable elements parading themselves as clerics.

It, however, urged President Tinubu and his wife, Oluremi, not to be distracted by the provocative, irresponsible, and condemnable vituperation of the preacher but to note that there are bad eggs in every society, pointing out that “the law prevailing in the system is capable of dealing with the charlatans and their collaborators for the maintenance of peace in the country.”

Hardship: Falana writes AGF, seeks protection for NLC protesters

Falana

Amid the planned protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the hardship faced by Nigerians, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has asked the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to provide security for the demonstrators.

Barring any last-minute change, the NLC will on Tuesday, February 27 and Wednesday, February 28 protest following the dramatic hike in the prices of goods and services due to the removal of fuel subsidy and the free fall of the naira, among others.

The human rights lawyer in a letter dated February 24 and addressed to the Attorney General of the Federation said Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act empowers the Minister of Justice to provide security cover for the protesters.

He also called on the organisedlabour to conduct its scheduled rallies peacefully void of violence.

“While we have advised the members of the NLC to conduct the rallies scheduled for February 27-28, 2024 in a peaceful manner, we urge you to use your good offices to direct the Inspector-General of Police to provide adequate security to the conveners and participants in the protest, in line with the provisions of Section 83(4) of the Police Establishment Act,” the letter read in part.

“Finally, while awaiting your favourable reply to this letter, please accept, as usual, the assurance of our highest esteem.”

Osimhen, Iwobi Prod Peseiro

After bad press about Super Eagles negative tactics at the Cote d’Ivoire 2024 African Nations Cup, the players are back to life, scoring in elite leagues across the Mediterranean, far away from the tropics where goals drought belittled them.

This is a clear message that further dents Jose Peseiro’s ambition of retaining his job as Manager of the Nigerian national team. The Portuguese made the Eagles look colourless even when they got to the grand finale against hosts Cote d’Ivoire.

Victor Osimhen’s first game for Napoli since arrival from Africa, ended in a 1-1 draw with Barcelona, in the Round of 16 of the Euro Champions League. Robert Lewandowski had put Barca ahead before the Nigerian drew the hosts level.

Osihmen

Alex Iwobi, always cheered by fans when the going was good, was subjected to ridicule for not doing his usual quick tap in Cote d’Ivoire. There were claims and counter claims about his role in the team as a midfielder.

Iwobi

Playing for Fulham against Manchester United in the English Premiership, Iwobi’s late strike gave his team maximum points against the Red Devils on a day two other Nigerians, Calvin Bassey and Tosin Adarabioyo, also made maximum impact.

Bassey

Bassey, a solid defender, showed that goal scoring was not alien to the Super Eagles when his 65th minute strike jolted Manchester at Old Trafford. Harry Maguire’s equaliser a minute to regulation time was made inconsequential when Iwobi spoke.

Victor Osimhen hit Abidjan as reigning African Footballer of the Year. He topped the scorers’ chart in the Italian Serie A with Napoli, a feat which helped the club win the title after a long while in the post Diego Maradona years. The top striker scored just one goal in the Ivorian capital.

The equaliser against Guinea Equatorial was a quick reaction. Four other efforts by Osimhen were over – ruled by the Video Assistant Referee ( VAR ). Credit to the Napoli hitman, four of the eight goals scored by Nigeria had his touch.

Osimhen earned a penalty against Cote d’Ivoire, scared Guinea Bissau into an own goal, assisted the first goal against Cameroon and plucked another penalty from South Africa.

Peeiro

However, Peseiro’s strategy was to barricade Super Eagles goalmouth with as many players as the crowd. That left Osimhen with little support upfront and to survive, he played the triple role of attacker, midfielder and defender. His pastoralism denied the tournament some great goals.

In the grand finale against Cote d’Ivoire, Peseiro allowed the Elephants so much space to go for the kill after Skipper William Troost – Ekong’s powerful first half lead. And that was all the victors needed to snatch the trophy which seemed so elusive after the group matches.

Fellow countryman, Jose Peseiro, threw his weight behind Peseiro before the grand finale. Hugo Broos, coach of South Africa, eliminated by Nigeria in the semi finals, faulted Peseiro and his strange tactics of defending for much of a game.

Nigerians believe Super Eagles would have done better if they were more offensive, especially through the wings. A country that produced Kunle Awesu, Baba Otu Mohammed, Segun Odegbami, Adokiye Amiesimaka and Emmanuel Amuneke suddenly became wingless.

Peseiro’s low quality was laid bare in Abidjan and even before the championships. Quality coaches do not stay behind begging to be paid their wages. The Portuguese was not only owed, he agreed to a pay cut when his employers threatened to throw him out.

In 1973, Otman Calder, employed to manage the Eagles after their Second All Africa Games golden outing, could not stay because what he saw was different from his expectations. While Nigeria Sports Commission ( NSC) Director, Chief Jerry Enyeazu mounted a search, the German was airborne, on his way back to Europe.

Another German, Manfred Hoener, came in 1988. After an African Nations Cup silver and a dismal Olympic outing, hunger forced him out. It took Justice Chuba Ikpeazu to take his accumulated salary to Germany in 1989. The same coach later excelled in Malawi.

Carlos Alberto, the man who captained Brazil to their third World Cup triumph in 1970, was engaged by Nigeria in 1994. He flew into the country full of smiles. When it dawned on him that trouble lay ahead, it was bye. ‘ Nigeria don’t pay,’ was his reason.

Thys Libregts was loaded before he was hired in 1998. As Manager, he qualified Holland for the World Cup. Eagles had so much to learn from him and I was convinced, after interacting with the Dutchman in Ouagadougou, that something good was coming. The man left in 1999.

Peseiro is still hanging around waiting for official announcement from the NFF. Osimhen, Iwobi and Bassey have shown that Eagles are no cowards, they can fly with goals under a good coach.

Popular opinion is that Peseiro has done so well for himself and is a proud land owner in Abuja. The country has shown love by giving him national honours. He is free to live or stay in Nigeria but definitely not as Super Eagles coach.

Idahosa protests, demands cancellation of  APC Primary

Idahosa

One of the governorship aspirants in the February 22nd primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Dennis Idahosa has staged a protest at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja, demanding justice.

Mister Idahosa, who was initially declared winner of the February 17, 2024, primary election by the Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, also threatened to drag the party to court if justice was not done.

He, however, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to call the National Working Committee (NWC) to order, by restoring his candidature as pronounced by Governor Hope Uzodimma.

His protest comes days after the APC canceled the election which produced him as the party’s candidate for Edo State governorship poll billed for September 2024.

The party later appointed Governor BasseyOtu of Cross River State to conduct a fresh governorship primary which produced Monday Okpebholo as the party’s candidate.

Okpebholo scored 12, 433 votes to defeat the other eleven aspirants. Idahosa polled 6,541 votes.

He said there were 31,863 accredited voters, total votes cast 31,863, valid votes 31,863, and zero invalid votes in the race that featured 12 contestants.

Abia PDP passes vote of confidence on party’s chairman

Henrietta Ashikodi, Umuahia…

The Peoples Democratic,  Party, Abia state has dismissed the news item circulating on social media calling for the resignation of the State Chairman of the party, Rt. Hon. Dr. Alwell Asiforo Okere, because he could not deliver the Party in the last general election.

The party describe the group, Abia PDP Network Movement, calling for the resignation of the party’s chairman as an unrecognised, obscure, baseless and faceless organisation..

Reacting through a press release, Abia PDP Vice Chairman/Acting State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Elder Abraham Amah said it was laughable and unfortunate that the call was coming from a group whose individual names are not even found in the membership register of the Abia PDP, even as the news item was circulated by a single journalist whose intent was cast in doubt and duplicity.

“The Abia PDP would not have bothered to respond to the impudence of the so called group if not that it made some unfounded allegations against the person of the PDP Chairman which we use this opportunity to correct.

“As a matter of fact, the Abia PDP through its State Working Committee, SWC uses this opportunity to pass a vote of confidence on the State Chairman of the Party, Rt. Hon. Dr. Alwell Asiforo Okere and affirm that he has and continues to provide leadership to the teeming members of the Abia PDP and its numerous supporters and sympathisers.

“It is on record that the Abia PDP under Dr. Alwell Okere witnessed unprecedented growth and unity and his leadership remains one of the best in the history of Abia PDP, which shows clearly that those calling for his resignation are outsiders and bereft of the developmental history of the Abia PDP.

“To put the records right, Rt. Hon. Dr. Alwell Asiforo Okere delivered all the PDP candidates in his polling unit, ward and constituency and we challenge those calling for his resignation to produce the election results of their polling units, Wards, State constituencies and National Assembly for comparison,”. Amah stated.

The PDP spokesman further revealed that they are law abiding corporate citizens, adding that the Abia PDP would refrain from commenting on the sealing of the Abia PDP Secretariat because the matter was subjudice as it was currently before the Judicial Panel of Inquiry instituted by the Abia State government.

“It is clear to us that the current economic hardship has compelled some individuals to engage in acts inimical to decency and rationality, just to satisfy their hunger and we would not join them in this naked dance of shame and sham.

“We call on these detractors to find something meaningful to do with their lives and desist from bringing shame and disgrace to themselves because every discerning and well meaning member of the PDP and even outsiders know that the leadership qualities of Dr. Alwell Okere are top notch and indisputable.

“The Abia PDP also calls on its members and the good people of Abia State to disregard the cheap blackmail peddled by these desperate elements and join hands with the State Chairman of the PDP, Rt. Hon. Dr. Alwell Asiforo Okere to continue to build the party and make it more formidable for the future.

Imo Lawmakers call for measures to stem high cost of Food

IMO ASSEMBLY

By Vivian Iwu…

As Food prices and other commodities continue to soar with harsh Economic realities, Imo State House of Assembly has passed a Motion, urging the Governor, Hope Uzodimma to immediately direct the Ministry of Education to ensure Demonstration Farms are restarted in various Primary and Secondary Schools in the State.

They also agreed to urge the Governor to direct the Ministry of  Agriculture to immediately interface with the Local Farmers across the State, and seek ways to improve on farming, and providing necessary logistics to them, such as Grant, Seedlings, Manure among others
Other Prayers of the Motion, chiefly sponsored by the member representing Nkwerre State Constituency, Hon. Chisom Ojukwu include; to urge Governor Uzodimma to reactivate Imo Marketing Board, to ensure the continued support to Imo Residents through storage and distribution of food items and commodities, in order to increase Food Reserve and ultimately alleviate the suffering of Imo people .

They also urged the Governor to direct the relevant Agencies and Ministries to look into the Rubber Plantations in Imo State, in order to ensure they are working optimally to increase production, as this would boost employment, and generate more Revenue for the State, as well as facilitate the revamping of Avutu Poultry in Obowo because these are some of the ways to prioritize Agriculture in Imo State.

Meanwhile, earlier presenting the Motion, Hon. Ojukwu observed that the lacuna created in not participating in Agriculture and farming gave room for most of the Agricultural and Farm Produce to be imported into the State from other parts of the country, positing that it resulted in high cost of  food items with it antecedent landing cost.

He called on the State Government to immediately intervene by making Agriculture, a priority and avert  catastrophic consequences,  which may lead to wide spread famine, diseases and societal collapse.

“The Global Food Crisis cannot be over emphasized. Our Schools need to return to their Demonstration Farms, while our families should be encouraged to have farm at the backyards. Farmers need grants and seedlings, to make headway”.

Hon.  Ojukwu stated, and expressed worry that unprecedented high cost of food items in the State, as well as obvious lack of interest in Agriculture and farming by Teachers and Students has made it imperative for Governor Uzodimma’s immediate Intervention by ensuring that Agriculture was made a priority to avert catastrophic consequences.

IPC Boss charges Journalists to be Catalysts of Good Governance

By Vivian Iwu…

The Executive Director of the International Press Center (IPC ), Prof. Lanre Arogundade has charged Journalists to be catalysts of Good Governance.

He made this charge at a two – day Workshop, organized by the International Press Center (IPC), in collaboration with European Union (EU)-Support / Funding to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGIN) for over 40 Journalists, selected from South-East and South – South Zones of Nigeria, on the use of Freedom Of Information (FOI) and Facts – Check Tools.

The theme for the Workshop, which took place in Port Harcourt, River State, was: “Post Election Reporting: Using FOI Act & other Investigative Methodologies to report Democratic Governance & Electoral Accountability Issues”.

Arogundade explained that what informed his decision to hold the event was that Journalists and the media can hold the Government accountable to the people and do better to report in the Public interest.

“Ultimately it’s about the people. So, we are looking at Democratic Governance and Post Elections, particularly when it comes to promises made by elected Politicians, we believe that we need to use relevant Tools to follow up on those Policies and the Claims they are also making about what has been done or what has not been done.

“That’s why we talked about Freedom of Information Act and Fact – Checking.”
He explained, adding that IPC believes that Gender Issue is still very important and it is their obligation to advance the course of Women.

According to him, in Societies, including Nigeria, through consistent reporting and follow – up, Journalists have been able to make a difference in the lives of people, getting Government to do what it is supposed to do; build Roads and Health Centers in Communities, and expressed confidence that it is quite possible now, despite the challenges faced in the Profession.

He charged Participants of the Workshop on value of fact- checking their Reports in order to dispel suspicions and lower the spread of false information in the society.

However, another Resource Person at the Event, Mr. Edetaen Ojo, Executive Director, Media Rights Agenda, Lagos, who did Justice to the theme of the Event, “Post- Election Reporting: Using FOI Act & other Investigative Methodologies to report Democratic Governance and Electoral Accountability Issues”, charged Journalists to conduct investigative reporting more often, and to hold the Government and Government Officials, as well as Institutions, accountable.

Edetaen Ojo, a former Nigeria Guardian Editor, explained that Media Professionals are in the Information Business, and the whole point of Freedom of Information Act is to enable Citizens, including, Journalists to get Information that is reliable from Public Institutions and Officials because in the Digital age, there’s so much inaccurate Information floating around.

“So, it’s particularly important that we have an instrument that enables us to ask and get information and have the assurance that the information we are getting is accurate and reliable, then we should utilize that instrument.

“But unfortunately, our experience has been that over the last 12 years or so, the law has been in existence, Journalists have not made significant use of it, so, part of the objective here is to create greater awareness and sensitize Journalists about the existence of the Law and its value to them and also build capacity on how to use the law effectively.

Onanuga: Why distribution of 42,000MT of food items is delayed

The presidency says the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is in the final stages of releasing 42,000 metric tonnes (MT) of assorted food commodities to support vulnerable Nigerians.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, made this known in a statement on Friday.

Onanuga said the grains, in seven locations of strategic reserve, are currently being bagged for onward delivery to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

“The need to bag the grains, caused the delay as the bags were freshly ordered by government,” he said.

“Nigerians will not need to pay for the grain bags, as they are free. This will be complemented by the 60,000 metric tonnes of milled rice to be purchased by the Federal Government from the Mega Rice Millers.”

Speaking on the issue, Abubakar Kyari, minister of agriculture, said the announcement of the impending releases of food commodities from the strategic reserve has resulted in a significant drop in commodity prices throughout the country’s major grain markets.

Also, Onanuga said the federal government was ramping up food production by boosting dry season farming under the National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP) project.

The first phase of the dry season farming, the statement noted, was launched in November 2023.

According to the government, the focus will be on the cultivation of wheat across 15 wheat-producing states, spanning 118,657 hectares and involving 107,429 farmers.

Abubakar Kyari, minister of agriculture, said the fields are green and harvest will commence in a matter of weeks.

“There are fantastic reports of growth of wheat from Jigawa State, which is now targeting harvest from about 50,000 hectares, 10,000 hectares more than initially allotted under the programme,” Kyari said.

Phase 2 of the dry season farming, covering rice, maize, and cassava, is also expected to commence soon across all 36 states of Nigeria and the federal capital territory (FCT).

“For rice, the target is 250,000 hectares, involving 500,000 farmers with the expected output of 1 million metric tons of paddy rice,” the minister said.

“For maize, we are cultivating 55,000 hectares with 110,000 farmers, thereby adding 165,000 metric tons to national maize production while for cassava, we are doing 35,000 hectares with 70,000 farmers to produce 525,000 metric tons of cassava.

“The NAGS-AP Project offers a 50% subsidy. However, the Federal Government is providing additional support for Phase 2, which will bring aggregate subsidy to about 93 %  tofarmers cultivating the crops.

“Also various governors are showing strong support, to further enhance the subsidy.”

In addition, solar-powered water pumps for irrigation, provided by the federal government, are also being deployed to aid the next phase of the programme.

CBN mandates forex sellers to declare sources, introduces revised guidelines for BDCs

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced a revised regulatory framework for Bureau De Change (BDC) operations to address excesses and enhance transparency in the foreign exchange market.

As part of ongoing reforms, the CBN now mandates foreign exchange sellers to BDCs transacting $10,000 and above to declare their sources of forex.

Additionally, sellers are required to comply with anti-money laundering/combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) regulations.

The guidelines, outlined by Haruna Mustapha, the Director of the CBN’s Financial Policy and Regulation Department, cover permissible activities, licensing requirements, corporate governance, and AML/CFT provisions for BDCs.

The framework also establishes new record-keeping and reporting requirements, with a condition that only entities authorized by the CBN can engage in BDC activities in Nigeria.

The guidelines define a BDC as a company licensed by the CBN to conduct retail foreign exchange business exclusively in Nigeria.

Commercial banks, merchant banks, non-interest banks, payment service banks, financial institutions, holding companies, payment service providers, and certain individuals are barred from promoting BDCs.

The guidelines specify permissible sources of foreign currency for BDCs, including tourists, returnees from the diaspora, expatriates, international money transfer operators, embassies, authorized hotels, the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, and other sources specified by the CBN.

BDCs are prohibited from engaging in street trading, maintaining accounts for the public, accepting assets for safekeeping/custody, taking deposits, granting loans, or conducting retail sales of foreign currencies to non-individuals (except for BTA, international outward transfers).

The guidelines aim to streamline BDC operations, enhance regulatory oversight, and curb illicit financial activities in the foreign exchange market.

Tinubu, ECOWAS leaders meet over Burkina Faso, Niger, Mali

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is currently conferring with his counterparts at the Extraordinary Summit on the Political, Peace, and security situation in the region, at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

Tinubu who chairs the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State is leading talks expected to see the regional bloc relaxing sanctions on its military-ruled member states of Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, and Niger.

Headquartered in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, the nearly 50-year-old bloc consists of 15 countries.

However, the military-led juntas of Burkina-Faso, Mali and Niger, in late January, announced their withdrawal over “illegal sanctions” harming their people.

They also alleged that the bloc had fallen under the influence of foreign governments whose interests, they said were far from the peoples’.

In July 2023, the regional bloc approved the “Suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between ECOWAS Member States and Niger. Freeze all service transactions, including energy transactions.”

It froze assets of the Republic of Niger in Aqua Central Bank and the state enterprises and parastatals in commercial banks.

It also took similar steps when Mali and Burkina-Faso fell under military rule.

Although ECOWAS’ rules mandate a withdrawing member state to issue one year’s notice, the junta declared their secession as immediate. It was the first withdrawal nearly 24 years after Mauritania pulled out in December 2000.

On February 15, ministers from Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republic announced plans to establish a confederation.

However, the ECOWAS says the trio has not formally withdrawn from the league.

Court denies Anambra lawyer bail for brutalising maid

The Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court, sitting at the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Awka, Anambra State has denied a lawyer, Mrs Adachukwu Okafor, bail for allegedly inflicting physical injuries on the body of her 11-year-old housekeeper and ordered her remand at the State Criminal and Investigative Department custody in Awka.

Okafor, who resides at Chris Igwilo Street Akapka GRA, Onitsha, Anambra State, was arraigned before the Children, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka, on Wednesday on a-two count.

The court was presided by Her Worship, Genevieve Osakwe, at the Chief Magistrate Grade 1, Awka.

Okafor was alleged to have used various objects like a broken bottle, knife, and electric iron to harm her house help, identified as Happiness Nwafor, in response to an incident involving her daughter.

The two-count borders mainly on wilfully inflicting physical injuries on the body of one Happiness Nwafor, an offence punishable under Section 4(1) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition and Protection) Laws of Anambra State of Nigeria 2017.

The charge was read and interpreted to the defendant to the satisfaction of the court; and the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Okafor, who was reportedly said to be on the run, surrendered herself to the state police command in Awka, after the Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, had placed a N2m bounty for anyone who knew her whereabouts.

The bail application made by the defendant’s counsel, Chijioke Nwankwo, was denied by the court and the matter adjourned till February 28, 2024 for ruling.

Speaking to journalists after the court’s session, the defendant’s counsel, Nwankwo, when asked why it took his client time to report to the police, stated that he was not aware of any bounty placed on Okafor, explaining that he was only contacted for the job of which he immediately took the defendant to the police immediately.

He, however, accused the state Ministry of Women and Social Welfare of “already doing trial by ordeal”, which he noted was not in the best interest of the case.

The victim, an 11-year-old, had since been discharged from the hospital and made appearance in court too.

Reacting to the development, the Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, stated that she trusted the court to do justice on the matter.

Obinabo also revealed that her ministry would soon embark on media sensitisation programme, during which Ndi Anambra would be educated and fully enlightened about the dangers and negative consequences of child abuse.

She said, “We advise members of the public to shun all forms of social vices in society, especially, those vices that endanger the life of a child; and we call on everyone to be agents of positive social change.”

When interrogated when she appeared before the commissioner in her office, the suspect denied using hot iron and knife on the maid’s private and other body parts, as was shown in the viral video. She claimed she was only flogging the maid for abusing her son, when she suddenly fell on the blades of her cooking gas burner.

She said, “I was driving and my car broke down at about 3pm that day and I went to buy something. When I returned, I met my maid naked on top of my six-year-old son in my car and when I wanted to beat her, she ran away. It was the security men at the area that even caught her and brought her to me.

“When I got home and was preparing dinner at about 9pm, I started flogging her for what she did and in a bid to escape, she fell with her buttocks on the blades of the cooking gas.

“She also fell with other parts of her body on the blades. I never inflicted any injury on her as alleged.

On why she did not take the victim to the hospital when she saw the wounds, the suspect claimed it was already late in the night, adding that she did not see the extent of the injuries that night.

“You can come in as United States to assist us, if we solve the power problem, then there’s another problem which is access to finance and these days of expensive dollars, people are running away from foreign currency funding, but i believe we can sit down and think out a process whereby, even if it is for government to provide a guarantee and help against fluctuations in the foreign currency price, so that our people can be sure of support that they can pay back” Governor Otti said.

Forex Crisis: Presidency confirms ban of Binance, AbokiFx, others

The Presidency has confirmed the ban of online cryptocurrency and Foreign Exchange (Forex) platforms operating in the country.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs (Office Of the Vice President), Tope Fasua, made the confirmation on Wednesday.

The Federal Government had blocked the major online crypto platforms to avert the continuous manipulation of the forex market and illicit movement of funds.

The latest development comes after the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, ordered a crackdown on currency speculators in the country.

It was gathered that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) communicated the directive to telecommunication companies to block the crypto platforms.

The government was said to have decided to move against the crypto and forex firms following reports that currency speculators and money launderers were using them to execute criminal activities. Some of the crypto firms blocked include Binance, Forextime, OctaFX, Crypto, FXTM, Coinbase, and Kraken, among others.

In a chat with the cable, Fasua hailed the government for taking steps to address the free fall of the naira, especially the ban on crypto and forex platforms.

He said: “In less than two hours after the FG banned crypto and Binance, the dollar dropped from N1850 to N1390. I pray this is sustainable.”

Speaking further, Fasua said the floating of the naira contributed to the rising cost of living and the economic hardships Nigerians are facing at the moment.

The presidential aide asserted that the county’s economy is too fragile to withstand the naira float.

“The economy is too fragile for that. The naira float made prices go up everywhere,” he said.

The Chief of Defence Staff, (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has warned those he described as “evil people” calling for a coup in Nigeria due to the current economic hardship in the country.

Musa warned that the law will come for those calling for a coup in the country over the current economic realities.

He spoke after inaugurating the main entrance of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army and Officers Transit Accommodation, at the Division Headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The Army chief assured of the Armed Forces commitment towards the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria.

Musa said: “Whoever is making that call (coup) does not love Nigeria. We want to make it very clear that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are here to protect democracy. We all want democracy and we do better under democracy. And so we will continue to support democracy. And any of those ones that are calling for anything other than democracy are evil people and I think they don’t mean well for Nigeria. And they should be very careful because the law will come after them. We can see that with democracy a lot of things are happening in Nigeria. Yes we are going through trying periods, I mean in life nothing is hundred per cent.”

Musa said the Federal Government was focused on addressing the current economic challenges in the country and therefore appealed to Nigerians to exercise patience.

“Everybody goes through a trying period in life, and it is what you do with them. You can see the government putting efforts to ensure that we come out better.

“And it is when you go through difficulties and come out better you will really appreciate what it is to build a nation.

“And so we are going through our trying period, but I can assure Nigerians that it will get better,” he added.

Tinubu to sign Executive Orders to bring down costs of medicines

In an imminent move to alleviate the cost burden of pharmaceuticals on Nigerians, President Bola Tinubu is set to sign executive orders aimed at reducing the prices of essential medicines. The announcement was made by the Minister of State for Health, TunjiAlausa and communicated through a post on X by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, BayoOnanuga on Wednesday.

This strategic decision comes as a response to the soaring prices of pharmaceutical products, which have increasingly become a concern for many Nigerians.

According to Minister Alausa, the executive orders are expected to provide “immediate succour” to citizens, addressing the urgent need for affordable healthcare products in the country. The move to regulate pharmaceutical prices through executive orders was underscored a month prior by the Minister of Health, Ali Pate.

He highlighted the necessity of such measures following the withdrawal of major multinational pharmaceutical companies from the Nigerian market.

This departure has exacerbated the challenge of accessing reasonably priced medicines, making the government’s intervention critical.

The minister said, “On what the government is doing regarding the high cost of pharmaceuticals, Mr. President has asked us to come up with a set of Executive Orders that he is going to sign to provide immediate succour to Nigerians about the high cost of pharmaceuticals.

“And these executive orders will get to the President’s table in the next few days. And that is the short-term solution to bringing down the cost of high pharmaceuticals and medical consumables that the citizens are experiencing currently.

“We are also working on medium-term solutions and long-term solutions.

For us at the ministry of health, we are collaborating with the ministry of industry, trade and investment, and others to develop medium and long-term plans so that the situation we suddenly find ourselves in will not be here ever again.

“This cost of high pharmaceuticals that we are noticing now is due to inadequate planning in the past, but we are working on plans and solutions that will be durable and sustainable.” Alausa added that the president is very committed to getting to the “end of this problem very quickly”. He added, “As we know, the president made a lot of campaign promises to revamp, improve, and put the healthcare system of Nigeria on a sustainable pathway. “As we can see, Mr. President is meeting a significant chunk of his campaign promises, and he is going to meet all of his promises. The healthcare budget for 2024 is the biggest ever that we have had in the history of Nigeria.”

While asking Nigerians to bear with the current administration, the minister assured that the costs of pharmaceuticals will plummet pretty soon.
