In response to Senegalese President, MackySall’s decision to postpone this month’s elections, human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has appealed to the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, to consider implementing targeted sanctions like travel bans and asset freezes on President MackySall and his government officials.

Falana urged ECOWAS to promptly convene an extra-ordinary session to address the worsening human rights and rule of law situation in Senegal.

Falana stated that the postponement of the elections indicates a deliberate attempt by Sall to manipulate the country’s Constitution in order to cling to power against the will of the citizens and their popular aspirations.

He emphasized that imposing targeted sanctions on President Sall and his officials aligns with the provisions of ECOWAS treaties and protocols, including article 45 (2) of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, as stated in Falana’s official statement.
