Wife of Imo State Governor, Bar. chioma Uzodimma has been applauded for empowering not less than 1,383 inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Imo State.
The Comptroller of NCS, Imo State, Eke .C. Eke gave the commendation when he led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Office of the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lady Nkechi Ugwu.
In a press release signed by the Public Relations Officer in the Ministry, Nnodimele Njideka, and made available to The Statesman,
Eke described the numerous support of Bar. Uzodimma to inmates at the correctional center as first of it’s kind.
He made it known that the inmates are making economic use of the palliatives , machines and kits given to them by Her Excellency through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.
This according to him been helping them to get reformed, rehabilitated and empowered.
He informed that the inmates are currently producing shoes, soaps, bags, sandals among other items.
The Imo NCS comptroller acknowledged the Women affairs and Social Welfare Commissioner for delivering all the empowerment items to them and solicited for continued support and partnership.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Lady Nkechi Ugwu thanked them for appreciating the goodwill of Her Excellency and promised to extend their appreciation to her.
Ugwu informed them that the first lady would soon launch the Sexual Offenders Registry which according to her would publish sexual offenders and urged them to assist in the project by compiling the names of inmates convicted on the charges of sexual related offences.
She further promised that Bar. Uzodimma would deliver Christmas welfare packages to inmates of the Correctional center inorder to give them a sense of belonging as well as to make life meaningful for the inmates.
Ugwu further assured them that Bar. Uzodimma will do all it takes to support the inmates in order to better their lots.
In another related development, the Chairperson of Women Committee of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Echebima Ada and the Founder of Women of Virtue for Unique Change, Mrs. Uzozie Euphemia have lauded the first lady for carrying women along in the scheme of affairs of the state through the Ministry of Women affairs and Social Welfare.
The women groups during their various courtesy visit to the office of the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, maintained that the Imo first lady has raised the bar of humanity and the vulnerable members of the society while describing her as a mother per excellent.
In her responses, Lady Ugwu urged the women groups to reciprocate the goodwill of her Excellency through their unalloyed support and commitment towards the policies of the state government.
Ugwu poured encomiums on Women Committee of NLC for the bills in favor of female workers which sponsored and domesticated by the Imo State House of Assembly and also the Women of Virtue infor Unique Change for their ongoing women empowerment programs.
