Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has commended Akokwa women for uniting to assist their community, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of their people, while calling on other women groups in different communities of the state to take a cue from Akokwa women.
The Governor said this, Sunday, through the Deputy Governor, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, at St. Peter’s Anglican Church Compound, Akokwa, in Ideato North Local Government Area, as the Akokwa Digital Ladies (ADL) held her maiden cultural fiesta, tagged “Akokwa Festival, 2024”
The Governor was impressed with the organisation of the women, the unity that exists within them, their commendable initiatives and the clinical execution of the august event.
He expressed an overwhelming joy that the women were making positive impacts with great zeal to sustain the peace and development in their communities.
The Governor said, “Women holding a carnival of this nature, accommodating everybody, especially the youths will foster peace, unity and progress, guiding youths to positive thinking and discouraging them from actions capable of breaching peace and order.
“If this gesture is sustained, it will bring massive development, encourage investors, promote, tourism and guarantee the overall fortune of not only the Akokwa community but also the state.
The organisers of the monumental occasion, Akokwa Digital Ladies (ADL), is a group of enterprising women of Akokwa descent, either by birth or marriage. It is a non profit and non governmental organisation, poised to impact their community and change the narrative of their people.
In her address, the convener and leader, Akokwa Digital Ladies, Nneoma Lady Maria Ihionu, thanked the Governor for showing a formidable presence in their function through his deputy, acknowledged the giant strides of the Governor in the state, while promising their continued support for the 3-R administration.
Many activities like singing, dancing, match pass/parade, cultural display, ‘akukouwa’, concert, debate, Christmas carol/fireworks and awards to distinguished Akokwa sons and daughters marked the event.
Interestingly, Her Excellency, the Deputy Governor, who went in company of her husband, Chief (Barr) Chukwuma Ekomaru, SAN, received, on behalf of the Governor, the salute of honour from different Women groups, as they matched/paraded in their magnificent attires and costumes, while the founder of Akokwa Digital Ladies, Nneoma Lady Maria Ihionu, was one of the award recipients.
The epoch making event had prominent Imo sons and daughters including the Chairman, Ideato North Local Government Area, Arch. Chukwunonso Okparaeke, member representing Ideato in the House of Representative, Hon. Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu, traditional rulers, captains of industries, business moguls, different youth and women groups in attendance.
