The Chairman, Umuopara Council of traditional rulers, Umuahia, Abia. HRM Eze Engr. Wisedom N Ekueku , has call on president Bola Tinubu to forget about party and tribal differences, invite experts into his government to help him resolve the current economic downturn.

The monarch who is the Ohazurume 1of Dim na Opara Autonomous Community, Umuahia, stated this while speaking during the Iwa-ji Umuopara Ahia-Asaa, Ogbodiukwu at their village square in Ogbodiukwu.

The traditional ruler disclosed that there are intelligent people in the country who have been tested and trusted, he called on president Tinubu to reach out to such persons to help in getting the country right. He maintained that history will not be kind to this current leaders if Nigeria should collapse under them.

He revealed that corruption has become endemic in the country, while hinting that not only our leaders that are corrupt but a large proportion of Nigerians who believe that in any position they find themselves is an avenue to making money.

Engr Ekueku call on the people of Southeast to go back to farming especially at this period of hardship and economic turn around. ” as we celebrate it is unfortunate to observe that most of us have since abandoned the practice of agriculture”.

“Today the cost of living crisis is getting worse, everyday inflation does not seem to diminish, peaking at 34.2 percent in June, 2024 (according to the National Bureau of Statistics report) the highest inflation figure witnessed since the return of democracy in 1999, by implication, resulting decline in purchasing power of individuals, has led to the closure of many businesses, the rise in poverty and fall in production indices in Nigeria.

“The cost of living crisis is compounding the challenge face by families living in brink of poverty. There is no gainsaying that Agriculture has long been a corner of Nigeria’s economy, contributing to the the largest share to our Cross Domestic product, underfunding, neglect, by all tiers of government has worsen the economic situation”. Eze Ekueku hinted.

The traditional ruler however commended governor Alex Otti for his unwavering commitment to redefining governance in Abia since he assume office, he noted that his excellence, commitment to service, integrity, and compassion has given us hope as a people.

He, on behalf of the traditional rulers of Umuopara appreciated the governor for approving the construction of Umuopara ring road and Abia tower Onuimo road, terminating at the boundary with Imo state, the comprehensive upgrade and retrofitting of Amachara general hospital.

They also seek for his intervention in the gully erosion at Ekedi, new the Umuopara palm oil market.

Contributing, the secretary of Umuopara Ahia Asaa and Chairman of Iwa-ji 2024 Organizing Committee, High Chief Promise Oleka, said there was a lot of disagreement and controversies as to which of the community was to host the event but he said they eventually settled for Ogbodiukwu as he thank God for the participation of the various communities, the role played by Eze Ekueku and the success of the occasion.

He revealed that Iriji festival is not fetish as he regreted that there are a lot of misconception about it. And urged all to preserve it for future generations.
