The Trade Union Congress (TUC), Imo State Council, has commended the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma for increasing the minimum wage and salaries of workers employed by the state government.

The Council described the announcement made by the governor on Tuesday, August 26, during his meeting with labour leaders in the state at the Government House as laudable, encouraging and a demonstration of the governor’s human feelings, goodwill and desire to always improve the welfare of workers.

In a release signed by the Imo State Chairman of TUC, Comrd. Ibe Great Uchenna, and made available to this medium, the Congress observed with excitement that the gesture from the governor came at the right time, to bring relief to the workers who are adversely affected by the harsh economic conditions in the country.

The Council noted with admiration that courtesy of Governor Uzodimma’s goodwill, Imo State has occupied an enviable position as the highest paying state in minimum wage accross the country; a feat it noted was an outcome of strong political will.

The statement asserted that the cheering development would not only boost the morale of workers, but achieve higher productivity and efficient service-delivery for the state, in line with the vision of  Governor Uzodimma’s Shared Prosperity Government.

It reads in part: “The Imo State Council of the Trade Union Congress, (TUC), wishes to express its excitement and gratitude to the Executive Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, on his recent approval for increased minimum wage and salary payment for workers in the state.

“This goodwill which stirred-up jubilations among the workers, has clearly defined His Excellency as a leader with human feelings and strong desire to improve the welfare of the workers in the state.

“It is important and noteworthy that this cheering development, including previous incentives from the government will motivate the workers to render their services to the state with pride, dignity, full capacity and in accordance with the rules of engagement.

“As a Congress advocating for better welfare for members, we want to assure His Excellency that Imo State Council of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), in collaboration with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), will continue to support the policies and programmes of the government, while engaging it in fruitful dialogue over workers’ welfare,” the statement concluded.
