Rivers crisis: Wikes kinsmen declare support for Fubara

The Kinsmen of the minister of the FCT, Chief Nyesom Wike from Ikwerre ethnic nationality of the state have declared unalloyed support for the Rivers state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Governor on Monday, the President General of Ogbakor Ikwerre Worldwide, Eze Barrister Godspower Onuekwa, said as Ikwerre people, they have had their turn governing the State, and cannot sit by and watch an unknown person destroy the peace that the Governor has ensured in the State.

While commending the Governor for the numerous development projects being executed across the various Local Government Areas, including those of Ikwerre, Eze Onuekwa, pledged the unalloyed support of the good people of Ikwerre ethnic nationality to the administration.

On his part, the Chairman, Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Chike Worlu Wodo, said the stakeholders of Ikwerre ethnic nationality visited to encourage Governor Fubara, who has shown sufficient capacity in governing the State, seen and heard by everybody.

Eze Wodo urged Governor Fubara not to be distracted but remain focused, steer the affairs of the State fearlessly, and be sure of the Ikwerre support.

Also speaking, Senator John Azuta Mbata said Ikwerre people had governed the State for 16 years with support given to them by other ethnic groups in the spirit of inclusive politics, explaining that they cannot, therefore, refuse to support others to peacefully steer the affairs of the State.

Azuta assured that all relevant leaders of Ikwerre ethnic nationality were present to pledge their support to Governor Fubara against his detractors and ensure that the administration succeeds.

Responding, the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, declared that he is not an ungrateful person because he acknowledges and appreciates those who are instrumental to good gestures that had come his way.

The Governor stated that it is due to such well-breed lifestyle and personality that he had never contemplated throwing caution to the wind in handling the current political crisis that is bedeviling the State.

Governor Fubara made the assertion when he hosted the Stakeholders of Ikwerre Ethnic Nationality, including the leadership of Ogbakor Ikwerre Cultural Organisation Worldwide, the Supreme Council of Ikwerre Traditional Rulers, Ikwerre women, opinion and youth leaders, at Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The leadership structure of Ikwerre stakeholders led other paramount rulers, political leaders, leaders of thought, women and youths on the visit to recommit the people of the ethnic nationality to the success of the administration.

Governor Fubara stated that if he were ungrateful, with bad character as canvassed in some quarters, it would have been difficult to hide it for too long from everybody.

I want to also say this: Fubara is not an ungrateful person. If I were a bad person, you (one) cant hide character that is bad more than one week, two weeks, one month, one year, two years, eight years, even more than eight years. For 16 years, if I was a bad person, everybody would have known.

But, even your own child that is in your house that you have given birth to, let us start with even the girl child. It gets to a stage, your girl child will enter the bathroom and lock the door from behind.

Even if they forcefully put a feeding bottle in my mouth, if I get filled up, wont I pull it out? So, when people stand outside and say what they say, I want you people to ask them to tell you in their own good conscience, what is that bad thing; that wickedness, that ungratefulness that this man (Fubara) has ever shown or done. But, I leave that one to God who will judge everybody.

Governor Fubara, however, said the visit was not a time to address those issues surrounding the political crisis but a day to appreciate the delegation and the Almighty God for what He has been doing.

Dont pay for transformers, cables, others, NERC tells Nigerians

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has warned Nigerians against paying for electricity distribution infrastructures such as transformers, cables or poles.

In a statement shared alongside a video on X on Tuesday, NERC emphasised that consumers should not be coerced into purchasing transformers, cables, or poles, as this responsibility lies squarely with the distribution companies.

The statement reads, Is your distribution company expecting you to buy transformers, cables, or poles? Dont! It is the DisCos obligation, not yours! NERC stated emphatically.

The regulatory body urged consumers to report any coercion or delays in providing necessary materials by the distribution companies.

The statement added, Report any coercion to purchase, or delays in providing these materials to NERC for prompt action.

NERC assured the public of prompt action upon receiving such complaints.

To facilitate this, NERC said it has established a dedicated email and phone number for reporting issues related to network investments.

APC has done very well Uzodimma

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has performed well in the country, according to Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State.

He said the current economic challenges in the country is what is being experienced globally.

Uzodimma, who is the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) stated this in Abuja when he led governors elected on the platform of the APC on a visit to the Abdullahi Gandujes led National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling party.

The governor said: The truth of the matter is that the APC has done very well in Nigeria. What is happening currently, is a global economic problem.

We in Nigeria, under our own leadership, President Bola Tinubu is also bringing out policies to ensure, given the kind of economy he met, given the kind of situation he saw when he came, he has started the treatment and by the grace of God, I am very confident that very soon Nigerians will be jubilant about how he has managed to navigate the waters.

On the partys electoral chances in forthcoming Edo and Ondo gubernatorial polls in view of the current hardship in the country, Uzodimma said the APC controls 20, out of 30 States in the country, along with the presidency, and if election is the game of numbers, it means majority will win.

On his part, Ganduje said the partys leadership would strive to maintain a good relationship with the governors under the APC banner.

He said: There is no doubt we are highly elated and excited today when I got the information that they are coming. So, I think it is a blessing, a big blessing to us. So, we are so happy about it and we have confidence in them.

We will do all it takes to ensure that we maintain good relationships with our governors all over the country and we will help to protect their interests and there is no doubt that theyre also assisting the party, they are making the party proud as an institution.

Uzodinma was in company of the Cross River Governor, Bassey Otu; Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa and their Ekiti State counterpart, Abiodun Oyebanji.

Fubara tasks police to fish out suspect behind P-Harcourt explosion  …inaugurates Frank-Fubara as commissioner for finance

Fubara

Rivers state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has challenged the police to take action on the suspect behind the attempted detonation of explosive device in Port Harcourt, during the protest for elongation of former chairmen of local government councils.

The governor maintained that if such act was done by supporters linked to him, the police would have successfully slammed terrorism charges on them.

Fubara spoke shortly after inaugurating Emmanuel Onengiye-ofori Frank-Fubara, as the new Commissioner for Finance at the Executive Chambers of Government House in Port Harcourt on Monday.

The governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Nelson Chukwudi, insisted that Rivers has only one enemy vehemently opposed to his administration, with others classified as his offsprings, together making frenetic efforts to sink the state.

But Fubara declared that the good God has continued to frustrate their machinations and bring shame on them all.

The governor said, like it was upheld in many prayers by his predecessors, that Rivers state is dedicated to God, those fighting him would continue to experience inexplicable trouble and defeat.

He said: You know, if it were a situation that (Governor) Fubara is involved in anything, or links Fubaras associates, by now, Nigeria would have been hot. There would have been arrest, there would have been statements, there would have been counter this or that. There would have been press conferences.

But, because it is from the other side, nothing is heard yet. But glory to God, they couldnt hide it forever, even if I have not been hearing anything.

And, I am wondering after how many weeks now, the Nigerian Police is still not able to come out and make a statement about the attempt by the man that tried to detonate a dynamite in front of Presidential Hotel, Port Harcourt.

I am still wondering why it has not happened. But, maybe, if it was any other thing that has to do with us, they would have charged the person for terrorism.

But, you see, this God that I serve, we are serving genuinely. This God that Rivers State has been dedicated to by our predecessors, because when they make statements, they say: Rivers State belongs to God; and that is the God that is saving and lifting us.

Fubara said that the enemies of the State would surely gather, as stated in the Holy Bible, but because their gathering was not of God, they would surely scatter.

The governor pointed out that his administration was satisfied with its dealings with the Rivers State House of Assembly that is duly recognised by law to carry on with its legislative duties and providing the requisite support for effective functioning of the executive without interruption of governance.

Fubara charged the newly sworn-in Commissioner, who has a track record of being thorough and pays attention to details, to ensure he did not disappoint the confidence reposed in him.

He also urged him to use the opportunity to touch lives, while making the state proud with the quality of service he would render, by defending it always.

He said: It doesnt matter how long or short I have known him. But within the short period of knowing him, he has proven himself to be a gentleman.

So, Mr Frank, this honour that God has given to you today, it is not for you to wear one big cap and put one rottweiler in front of your gate, no. Use the opportunity to touch lives. But, above all, make the State proud. Work in a manner that youve not worked before. Defend the interest of the State. That is what is important, and not to praise me. No. Dont praise me. I believe strongly that you are going to do well and make us proud, and we will continue to make the state great.

Fubara assured that his administration would continue to offer services and deliver quality developmental projects that would truly advance the state on a progressive pedestal that will also translate to quality living for the people.

He added: By the special grace of God, when we leave, there should be genuine positive things that people will see and say, yes, this government meant well for the good people of Rivers State.

Abia state government will on Thursday this week launch a one billion Naira Interest Free Revolving Loan under the Abia Cooperatives Scheme for 9,200 Abians from the 184 wards of the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu disclosed this at Government House, Umuahia while briefing the press on the outcome of this week’s executive council meeting.

He noted that, 50 beneficiaries have been selected from each of the 184 wards to benefit from this first phase, noting that the scheme which is an interventionist program is at once, a form of palliative as well as an empowerment program that would help the beneficiaries turn their lives around for the better. “The short, medium and long term impacts of the scheme will no doubt have a salutary effect on the state’s economy”.

“In fulfilment of one of his campaign promises, His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti will on Thursday the 11th of July 2024 officially launch the disbursement of interest free Revolving Loans to Abians under the Abia state Cooperative Support Scheme.

“This is meant to support nano and micro business operators in the state. It is meant to help them in their businesses.

“It will help to ameliorate the difficulties people are experiencing in their businesses as a result of the economic headwinds that are currently affecting the nations economy,” Prince Kanu stated.

Prince Kanu noted with dismay, the rise in vandalisation of public schools and property in the state, a situation he said government frowns at.

He said that such acts of vandalism must stop forthwith, urged President Generals of Town Unions, their Executives, Traditional Rulers and other stakeholders to take ownership of the public schools in their communities.

“We found out that people are busy trying to vandalize school properties and this ugly trend needs to be stopped, so that the effort the government is making at reforming the education sector will not be in vain.”

The Information boss announced that henceforth enforcement against street trading and illegal motor park operations in Aba and Umuahia would commence and advised those engaging in such acts to desist forthwith.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu said the government has so far shown understanding and applied human face to the enforcement and would now act accordingly.

“Now we want to get into enforcement, having pleaded with our people for the past three months, we believe we have done enough, we owe all Abians a duty to ensure our cities are safe, that’s what we want to achieve and that is in the interest of all Abians” Prince Nwachukwu stated.

Also, speaking, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Mike Akpara clarified that contrary to the rumours making the rounds that he takes home 10 million Naira monthly, neither him nor other Abia state government officials take home 10 million Naira monthly from the government coffers, adding that such rumours are unfounded.

“I want to categorically state here, that the Commissioner of Finance does not take home 10 million Naira monthly. It is not done anywhere.

I also want to say that none of my colleagues take home such big sums of money, they said some take home 5 million, and some others 3 million naira monthly. There is nothing like that.” Mr. Akpara stressed.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma and the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha were present at the briefing.

Lagos court orders final forfeiture of $16.5 million, N127 million diverted from NIMASA

Justice Kehinde Ogundare of the Lagos Federal High Court, Ikoyi has ordered the final forfeiture of $16.5 million and N127 million which were fraudulently diverted from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to the federal government of Nigeria.

Justice Ogundare finally forfeited the monies, while granting an application for such orders, which was filed and moved by an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) lawyer, Sulaiman I. Sulaiman, today.

The monies, according to the EFCC, were said to be proceeds of unlawful activities.

The judge had on May 23, 2024, ordered the interim forfeiture of the monies, while granting an Exparte motion, brought before the court pursuant to Section 17 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14. 2006; and Section 44 (2)(B) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended)

The court after forfeiting the monies in the interim on May 23, 2024, had directed the EFCC to publish the order in a national newspaper, to show cause why the monies should not be finally forfeited.

However, at the resumed hearing of the final forfeiture of the money, counsel to the EFCC, Suleiman Suleiman, informed the court that pursuant to your lordships order made on May 23, 2024, that the order be published, the publication of the order was made on June 6, 2024, on a national daily.

The said application is supported by 22 paragraphs deposed to by Oghare Ogbole, an investigator with the EFCC.

The application is accompanied with two exhibits, the Interim order of the court and Punch publication of June 26, 2024. And Its supported with the written address.

We most respectively adopt same and urge the court to grant the relief sought.

Justice Ogundare after listening to the EFCC lawyer held that order granted as prayed.

The EFCC in the affidavit support of the application made the followings: That on the 2nd October, 2013, the management of NIMASA under the leadership of Dr. Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi vide letter referenced: NIMASA 2007/DG/NSA/2013/006 dated 2/10/13, requested for the release of the sum of N1,123,400 billion, for the implementation of International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) projects.

That on the 4th day of November 2013, the then President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, through the National Security Adviser (NSA) approved the requested sum of N1,123,400 billion. And that upon the release of the first tranche in the sum of N1, 123, 400 billion, an account No. 0060559139, domiciled in Access Bank was opened on 03/1/14, in which Captain Bala Ezekiel Agaba, the Chairman of the ISPS Committee/Executive Director, NIMASA, Mr. Victor I. Onuzurike and Mr. Dele T, Ejekukor are signatories.

That no sooner had the money hit the Committees account, one Mr. Uche Obilor, a close associate of the chairman of the committee, Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba received that total sum of N437,726,666.66 million, through his company known as Seabulk Offshore Operator Limited with account number 005326440 domiciled in Access Bank.

That the said Mr. Uche Obilor equally received another whopping sum of N402,480 million, through his company Southern Offshore Limited with Zenith Bank Plc., account number 1013224100. And that also, the said Mr. Uche Obilor used his company known as Ace Prothesis Limited to receive the total sum of N66,800 million, through its account number 1012583949, domiciled in Zenith Bank Pic.,

That out of the N437,726,666.66 million, paid to Seabulk Offshore Operator Limited, the total sum of N187 million, was transferred to Usaini Sabo on 06/03/2014, 10/06/2014, 12/06/2014 and 09/07/2014, who in turn converted same to US Dollars and handed them over to Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba.

That from the said sum paid to Seabulk Offshore Operator Limited, the total sum of N67 million, was on the 23rd July, 2014, paid to Kofar Fada Limited, who also converted the money to US Dollars and handed over same to Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba. And that the sum of N66,800 million, received by Uche Obilor through his company Ace Prothesis Limited from NIMASA was equally converted to personal use without rendering any service to the agency.

That from the sum of N402,480 million, received by Uche Obilor through his company Southern Offshore Limited from NIMASA, the total sum of N268 million, was paid to one Usaini Sabo, who said sum to US Dollars and handed same over to Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba.

That from the sum of N402,480 million, received from NIMASA by Mr. Uche Obilor through his company Southern Offshore Limited, the total sum of N103,100 million, was equally transferred to Haji Kawu Investment Bureau De Change and Lekay Leads Ventures Limited, which sums were equally converted to US Dollars and handed over to Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba.

That the various sums of money transferred to the companies of Mr. Uche Obilor from the treasury of NIMASA were fraudulent in that these companies neither rendered any service nor supply goods to the agency. Rather, the funds were largely converted to Dollars for personal use and the remaining retained by Mr. Uche Obilor.

That during the course of investigation, the total sum of $16,500 USD cash, was recovered by the Commission, part of the funds diverted from the treasury of NIMASA. And that for using his companies as mentioned above, Mr. Uche Obilor, upon invitation to the Commission during the course of investigation agreed to return the sum of N118 million, admittedly received and retained by his companies from the funds fraudulently converted from the treasury of NIMASA.

That Mr. Uche Obilor voluntarily raised drafts through First City Monument Bank in the name of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which sums are reasonably suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activity.

That the funds sought to be forfeited are reasonably suspected to be proceeds of an unlawful act of diversion of funds from the treasury of NIMASA, through Mr. Uche Obilor, his companies and other cronies.

That I know as a fact that Captain Ezekiel Bala Agaba, the then Executive Director, Maritime Safety and Shipping Development of NIMASA was convicted, sentenced by this Honourable Court, per Buba, J (rtd) and subsequently granted pardon by the Council of State.

That in view of the findings in preceding paragraphs and upon a thorough analysis of the evidence on record, this Honourable Court on the 23 day of May 2024 made an interim order of forfeiture to the Federal Government of Nigeria in favour of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) the assets sought to be forfeited.

That I know as a fact and verily believe that this Honourable Court on the said 23 day of May, 2024 also directed the Applicant herein to publish in any national daily the said interim order of forfeiture to enable any interested party to appear before the Court to show cause why the assets should not be finally forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria, in favour of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

That in compliance with the order of this Honourable Court, the Applicant herein published in The Punch newspaper of 6th June, 2024, the interim order of this Honourable Court.

That I also know as a fact and verily believe that notwithstanding the Order of this Honourable Court directing any interested party to appear and show cause why the assets sought to be forfeited should not be finally forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria in favour of NIMASA, no person or party had served any affidavit showing cause on the Applicant herein.

That this Honourable Court has the requisite power and jurisdiction to grant this application. And that it is in the best interest of Justice to hear and determine this application.

Wike, Fubara: Only God can solve Rivers crisis Shehu Sani

A former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has said only God can resolve the Rivers State crisis.

Posting on X, Sani wrote: Rivers State has been left in the hands of God to solve the problem.

Rivers State has been experiencing political tension since Governor Sim Fubara assumed office.Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike are fighting over who exerts political control in the state.

The crisis has led to the emergence of two parallel speakers, Martin Amaewhule and Victor Oko-Jumbo.

President Bola Tinubus earlier intervention did not yield the expected result.

Rivers Crisis: Your silence is worrisome Niger Delta group slams Tinubu

A group, 21st-Century Youths of Niger Delta and Agitators with Conscience (21st CYNDAC) has frowned at President Bola Tinubus silence on the unending political crisis in Rivers State, describing it as disturbing, worrisome and unacceptable.

A statement by the leader of the youth group, Izon Ebi, condemned the long silence of the President, noting that the reason for the current crisis and skirmishes by political actors in Rivers State was not far-fetched.

Ebi accused Tinubu of refusing to call the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration and former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, to order.

He warned that Wikes quest for political control of a state governor and government apparatus should not be sanctioned and approved by the President, as it seems to be at the moment.

According to him, the reason for the political crisis in Rivers State is a fight between a political godfather and a godson, as well as a resistance to the capture of state resources and institutions for the use and benefit of a godfather and his people.

Parts of the statement read, The 21st-century youths of Niger Delta and Agitators with Conscience ( 21st CYNDAC ) condemn the silence of Mr President to call his minister to order.

The reason for the political crisis in Rivers State is not far-fetched. Its a fight between a renegade political Godfather and a godson; its a resistance to the capture of state Resources and institutions for the use and benefit of a godfather and his loyalists.

The 21st Century youths of Niger Delta and Agitators with conscience ( 21st CYNDAC) use this medium to admonish the adversaries to allow peace to reign and allow state institutions to function according to the dictates of the Constitution.

There is no position in the Constitution whereby a man becomes a state and openly boasts of making a state ungovernable and the Federal government.

With all the countrys instruments of coercion is loudly silent and tacitly giving support to a godfather without taking cognizance of the welfare of citizens of the state into consideration.

Undermining the authority of the state governor by laying siege at local government headquarters by the Nigerian police is an act of taking partisanship to the extreme as the past government of Wike sacked a duly elected local government council and replaced them with caretaker, the Police or any other agency of government never laid siege on the council areas despite the fact that Amaechi was also a Minister and was in a chummy relationship with the then President.

In his statement to the police, the victim said, I was living with my grandmother, I was sent home to go and bring banana and kolanut, on my way home, one man called Olukay (the defendant) crossed me with his motorcycle, he dropped the banana and kolanut on my head, he carried me to a fenced uncompleted building, I was shouting but he did not listen to me, he removed my pant and started having sex with me, a passerby, who heard my voice entered the compound, he took to his heels on sighting the man, the man chased him but he was unable to catch him, the man came back and took me to my grandmother and explained what happened to her, she concluded.

To prove his case, the Prosecutor, Julius Ajibare called six witnesses and tendered the defendants statement, photographs of the victim, and medical report as exhibits.

The defendant spoke in his own defence through his Counsel, Oluwaseun Oyebanji, and denied committing the offence, but pleaded to the court to temper justice with mercy. He didnt call any witness.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Lekan Olatawura said, in this event, the victim consistently, unequivocally, and unshakenly stated that the defendant, who was well known to her was the person who raped her.

In all, it is proven beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant raped the 13-year-old girl on 25th December 2021 and consequent thereupon, I find him guilty as charged.

Consequent upon the foregoing, the defendant is sentenced to life imprisonment.

Why Nigeria should conduct census soon, says NPC chairman  …we are still waiting for presidents nod Isa-Kwarra

The chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Hon. Nasir Isa-Kwarra yesterday, July 8, said Nigeria needs to conduct the much-awaited National Population and Housing Census to meet up with the 2020 round of censuses.

Isa-Kwarra said the commission was ready to conduct the census but waiting for the nod of President Bola Tinubu.

He disclosed this in Abuja while briefing reporters during the commemoration of the 2024 World Population Day with the theme: Embracing the Power of Inclusive Data Towards a Resilient and Equitable Future for All, held at the NPC headquarters.

Isa-Kwarra said the country would have a very robust census that would provide inclusive data that is not just verifiable but acceptable by all.

He assured that: If we start now, we can achieve it. At least the 2020 round of census gives us an opportunity to extend up till April next year. So, if we start preparation now by April next year, we should be able to conduct a census. But we would like to work in November. At the beginning of the year, we wanted to conduct a census in November but we are waiting for that nod.

I agree with you that we do not have up-to-date data because we have not conducted a census. And the global body recommends that we conduct censuses as at when due. Yes, the 2020 round of censuses is ending this year and we have been making advocacy to make sure that we conduct a census before the 2020 round of censuses comes to an end.

I want to believe that we will get it right, we are just waiting on President Bola Tinubu to give us the go-ahead. We can do it. The commission is prepared to conduct a census once we have a date proclaimed by the president, we will do it once we have the resources to be able to recruit extra hands to help us. We would have a very robust census that will provide inclusive data that is not just verifiable but acceptable to all.

To have the right information/evidence/data for measuring and predicting likely demographic shifts, we need to hold a census that will deploy modern technology to generate timely, reliable and acceptable data required for addressing the different needs of the various population groups and implement interventions that will create opportunities for progress and removes barriers and inhibitions. This will guarantee individuals realizing their full potential.

Nigeria needs to strengthen its data generating institutions; adequately fund periodic data collection exercises that are inclusive and comprehensive; and most importantly provide a legislative frame to engender timely conduct of censuses as well as promote the use of these data to guide policy decisions. Some of the key messages to reflect on going forward, include That inclusive and reliable data/evidence can enable ascertaining a peaceful and prosperous future, and the building of resilient systems and societies; Data collection and analysis tools should be deployed to facilitate good representation and use of data; That Nigeria should champion data collection that counts people in their diversity and in all their complexity; That our data collection exercise, particularly for the upcoming Population and Housing Census would be Inclusive compliant and leaving no one behind.

Nigeria, Isa-Kwarra said was among nations that did not have sufficient, comprehensive, and inclusive data to evaluate its performance, achievements or challenges during the regional review of AADPD+10 and for ICPD@30 PoA reporting during the 57th Session of the Commission on Population and Development, early this year. He said: Therefore, I wish to reiterate that the theme calls for the evaluation of our data generating systems/institutions; our perceptions on issues of data and has raised a concern we should not ignore, but collectively (government at all levels, individuals, the Civil Society Organization (CSOs), Partners, Donor, leaderships of Religion, Culture and Tradition including the private sectors) resolve it in the shortest possible time.

The Statistician-General of the Federation/CEO, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Prince Adeyemi Adeniran said Nigeria needs all-inclusive data to plan.

Adeniran said NBS is always working hand in hand with NPC to have a credible census acceptable to all.

Building a resilient and equitable future requires a collective commitment from every sector and segment Nigerians and Nigeria

To our policymakers: Data should be your compass. Let it guide your decisions and ensure they reach every Nigerian.

To the private sector: Invest in the collection, analysis and utilization of inclusive data. Not only will it benefit society, but it will also unlock new market opportunities by providing a clearer picture of consumer demographics and needs.

To civil society organizations: Champion the importance of data and ensure all communities are included in the data production process, he said

Court

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the state capital, on Monday, issued an exparte order of interim injunction barring the Chief Judge of the state and the Clerk of the state House of Assembly from dealing with the Martins Amaewhule-led state House of Assembly.

The order issued by Justice Jumbo Stephen also prevented them from dealing with Amaewhule and 26 others as members of the Assembly, and from acting on any resolutions, articles of impeachment, or communications from them.

The suit marked PHC/2177/CS/2024 was filed by the Attorney General of the state as the first plaintiff and the Governor of the State, Siminialayi Fubara, as the second plaintiff, against Amaewhule and 26 others, as the first set of defendants, and Victor Oko-Jumbo, and others, CJ of the State and Clerk of the State House of Assembly and the Peoples Democratic Party as second sets of defendants.

The court also ordered all parties to maintain the status quo ante litem as of July 5, 2024, until the motion for an interlocutory injunction is heard and determined.

The order read, That an order of interim injunction is hereby made restraining the 31st and 32nd defendants from dealing or howsoever relating with the first to 27th defendants as members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and from receiving, forwarding or howsoever acting on any resolutions, articles of impeachment or order of the defendants pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction already filed herein.

Yahaya Bello Vs EFCC: Case transfer request to be heard in open court

Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has directed that the request by former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, for the transfer of the money laundering case instituted against him by the EFCC to Kogi, be heard in open court.

In a letter addressed to Bellos counsel, Abdulwahab Muhammed, SAN, and Musa Yakubu, SAN, the CJ drew their attention to a pending appeal in the case.

The pending appeal is between Yahaya Adoza Bello Vs Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN) wherein the defendant had sought a consequential order remitting the case to the chief judge for reassignment.

The letter, signed by Special Assistant to the CJ, Joshua Ibrahim-Aji, said as a result of the pending matter, it would be improper to take any step that would be tantamount to preempting the outcome of the appeal.

There is documentary evidence of a pending appeal in the case of Yahaya Adoza Bello Vs FRN filed on 17/05/2024 wherein the defendant as appellant has sought a consequential order remitting the case to the Chief Judge for reassignment.

It is not proper to take any step that will be tantamount to pre-empting the outcome of the appeal.

The main issue raised is jurisdictional in nature and will be more appropriately decided by the court.

The matter should therefore be presented in open court, the CJ stated.

Tsoho observed that the main offence allegedly bordered on conversion of the states funds to purchase property in Abuja, and that the filing of the charge could either be in Abuja or Lokoja.

He referred to two ongoing cases before the FHC in charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/550/22 FRN Vs Ali Bello and another, and another charge in FRN Vs Ali Bello and 3 others, where a similar request for transfer was made and the lower court refused the application.

The EFCC charge against the former governor is currently before Justice Emeka Nwite, and the matter had been adjourned until July 17 for hearing.

Man climbs mast in Abuja to protest economic hardship, insecurity

An unidentified man has climbed a mast on Katampe Hill in Abuja on Monday, declaring his willingness to sacrifice his life to address the pressing issues facing Nigerians.

The man reportedly left a suicide note at the base of the mast, demanding the reinstatement of the fuel subsidy and calling for other government measures to alleviate the hardships experienced by the populace.

The note read, These are the major Nigerian problems, and Im ready to sacrifice my life for the solution to them. I am calling for fellow Nigerians to join me on this riot.

In his five-point list, he wrote, On behalf of fellow Nigerians, I demand the following: Government should return fuel subsidy.

Government should declare a state of emergency in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Niger, and Borno on insecurity matters and take immediate action to clear terrorism in the above listed states and the country at large.

Government should open borders for food importation in order to eradicate food shortages in the country.

Nnamdi Kanu: Stop disparaging our son under guise of prophesy, family replies Ayodele

The family of the detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has warned the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, to focus on his ministry and stop disparaging their son in the name of prophesy.

The warning is coming on the heels of Saturdays prophesy by Ayodele where he reportedly told Kanu to beg the Nigerian government or die in jail.

Kanus family spoke as the Association of Igbo Town Unions, ASITU, commended the recent decision by the South East governors to approach President Bola Tinubu to seek the release of Kanu and urged them to put more effort to actualise his freedom.

This is even as a former governorship aspirant in Anambra State, Dr. Chike Obidigbo, has advised politicians, especially those from the South-East, against compounding the travails of Nnamdi Kanu, arguing that their current postures might worsen his problems.

Primate Ayodele during the launch of his 30th Warning to the Nations at his church in Lagos, said: Kanu should beg the government before he is released or else he will die in jail. But piqued by the comment credited to the Primate, Kanus family asked him to focus on his church and stop making provocative utterances against the IPOB leader under the guise of prophesy.

Kanus younger brother, Kanunta Kanu, in a statement, told the Primate to stop deceiving gullible minds with purported prophesies that have nothing to do with God. He also told the cleric to focus on his calling and stop seeking relevance through misdirected and provocative comments on Kanu.

Kanus family warned seers to keep their visions to themselves and stop using their sons name to seek public attention and draw traffic.

Kanunta reminded the Primate that God whose mouthpiece he is claiming to be is a God of justice who does not punish the innocent.

According to him, Kanu committed no crime but was unjustly incarcerated simply for demanding justice and fair treatment for his oppressed Biafra people.

Ayodele should be courageous enough to tell the world what God said about the murderous invasion of our family home that resulted in the death of ou parents and the murder of 28 other innocent visitors to our home. The righteous God I know cannot count the masterminds of this atrocity guiltless and hold their victim accountable.

Court sentences septuagenarian to life imprisonment for defiling minor

Court

A Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court yesterday sentenced a 72-year-old security guard, David Jackson, to life imprisonment for defiling a 7-year-old neighbours daughter.

Justice Abiola Soladoye sentenced Jackson to life imprisonment after she held that the prosecution had proved the three ingredients of defilement against the convict.

Justice Soladoye, in her judgment, held that the survivor was seven years old at the time of the incident but she was eight years when she testified before the court and identified Jackson as a gateman in one of the houses on her street.

The prosecuting counsel, Ms Abimbola Abolade, had called three witnesses while the convict testified as a sole witness.

The prosecutor submitted that the convict committed the offence May 16, 2022, on Oyedele Close, Ojodu, Berger in Lagos.

According to the judge, the facts of the case were that a brother of the survivor sent her on an errand on the day of the incident and when she passed and greeted the defendant, Jackson, he dragged her inside the room and when she shouted, he used his handkerchief to cover her mouth.

The testimony of the survivor was clear, consistent and coherent under cross-examination.

The second prosecution witness was a teacher who identified that the survivor was her student and she testified that one of her classmate had reported to her that the survivor was not feeling well and she was walking in a funny way.

The teacher, in her evidence, said she made an inquiry and discovered that the survivor was complaining of pains on her private part and that someone had sexually assaulted her.

Justice Soladoye also said that the teacher invited the parents of the survivor but they did not come around, hence she reported the case and the survivor was referred to the Mirabel Medical Centre in Ikeja and the medical report from the center was forwarded to the police.

The court, in its judgment, also held that the testimony of the survivors father was credible and was also corroborated with the evidence of the other two prosecution witnesses.

The judge held that attempts of the convict to shy away from the charge did not hold water.

She said, The father of the survivor who testified, identified the defendant as a security guard around his neighborhood and said he was with his wife, who was ill in the hospital when the incident happened.

The testimonies of the prosecution witnesses were credible, convincing, compelling and the prosecution proved the case of defilement against the defendant.

First, the survivor was a child as she came to the court to testify, secondly the defendant had sexual intercourse with her and there was no consent as the survivor is a minor

The defendant is consequently found guilty as charged for defilement of a 7-year old child contrary to Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos state 2015 and he is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment.

The judge also ordered that the name of the convict be registered in the Sexual Offences Register as maintained by Lagos State Government.

By Vivian Iwu

The Deputy Minority Leader of the Imo State House of Assembly and member representing Owerri Municipal State Constituency, Hon. Clinton Amadi, has visited the Flyover Construction Project Site at Assumpta Cathedral Roundabout Owerri to see the level of work done.

The Lawmaker who made the visit on Friday, July 5, 2024 said it was to enable him evaluate the level of work done and identify challenges confronting the execution of the Signature Project, if any, with a view to find how he could use his Office and Constituents to assist in the construction, so that the Project could be completed on record time.

He expressed profound appreciation to the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for the effective and efficient Management of State Resources in the execution of Signature and People Oriented Projects in the State, particularly the State Capital, Owerri.

He described their work output as an honest, sincere and patriotic approach to construction, unlike what was obtained in previous administrations where contractors were reportedly allowed to use inferior materials for the execution of major projects, and those projects have all collapsed before the very eyes of Imo Citizens, thereby wasting most irresponsibly, the little resources of the State.

“In terms of quality infrastructure, the Imo State Government is not doing badly. This is a departure from what Imo citizens, particularly, Owerri people, experienced on poorly executed Projects, from previous administrations.

Today, quality Infrastructural Development in the State, reminiscent of the Dee Sam Mbakwe Government, have come back. All the entry roads into the State Capital, Owerri Municipal, which I am representing in the Imo State House of Assembly, are wearing good and quality looks.

The shabbily constructed Inland Bridges by previous Government, have been reconstructed. The collapsed Imo International Conference Center (IICC) is being reconstructed. FG moves to address food inflation, suspends duties, tariffs, taxes on essential food items

TINUBU

The Federal Government has announced the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes on specific food items imported through land and sea borders.

The reports said that the affected items include maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas.

The announcement was made during a press briefing by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, at the National Press Centre, Abuja yesterday.

This move is part of the Presidential Accelerated Stabilization and Advancement Plan, an initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu aimed at achieving food security and economic stability in Nigeria.

According to the Minister, the government has been working tirelessly to address the food inflation crisis, which has seen prices skyrocket to unprecedented levels.

In addition to the duty-free import window, the government will also import 250,000MT of wheat and 250,000MT of maize, which will be supplied to small-scale processors and millers across the country.

The Minister added that the government will also engage stakeholders to set a Guaranteed Minimum Price (GMP) and mop up surplus food commodities to restock the National Strategic Food Reserve.

The minister assured Nigerians that the government is committed to achieving food security and ensuring that no citizen goes to bed hungry.

The government has also inaugurated the Renewed Hope National Livestock Transformation Implementation Committee to develop and implement policies that prioritize livestock development and align with the National Livestock Transformation Plan.

University workers to hold nationwide protest today

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has directed members to commence a nationwide protest today, Tuesday, July 9.

The directive is sequel to the failure of the federal government to pay the four-month withheld salaries of the university employees.

It would be recalled that the leadership of SSANU and NASU had met with the Ministers of Education, Labour and Employment and the National Universities Commission (NUC) on Thursday, July 4.

The meeting was to prevail on the unions not to embark on a nationwide industrial action, but the meeting ended in deadlock.

But according to a circular signed by SSANU national president, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, and his NASU counterpart, Peters Adeyemi in Abuja, the union accused the federal government of not showing any convincing commitment to paying the withheld salaries and resolving other pending grievances of the two unions.

They found the governments lack of commitment, disappointing and decided on a series of industrial actions, which include a general meeting of their branches to sensitise members to the governments insensitivity, followed by a one-day nationwide protest on Tuesday and a national protest in Abuja on July 18th, 2024.

The circular reads, In view of this disappointment and failure of government to address grievances of NASU and SSANU, JAC has decided on a series of industrial actions which include the following:

All branches of NASU and SSANU should mandatorily hold a general meeting on Monday, 8th July 2024, to sensitise members to the governments insensitivity to our plights. A one-day protest should also be held on Tuesday, 9th July 2024, at each branch simultaneously.

Every branch should ensure that all members fully participate in the protest and the press/media is adequately mobilised.

A national protest will be held in Abuja on Thursday, July 18, 2024, after which JAC will meet to announce a date when the strike action will commence.

2027: Ex-APC Vice Chair urges Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, Osinbajo, others to align

A former national vice chairman, North-west of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman has charged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governor Peter Obi, former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor Rotimi Ameachi to forge an alliance to unseat President Bola Tinubu and his party in 2027.

He threw the same charge to former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, former Governor Nasir El-rufai, former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, former Governor Kayode Fayemi and former Ibikunle Amosun, among other political leaders.

Lukman, in a statement, titled: Future of Democracy in Nigeria said building the kind of united front capable of moving Nigerian democracy forward requires selflessness on the part of Nigerian political leaders.

He bemoaned the situation whereby APC as the ruling party in Nigeria promised to provide the needed leadership to fight corruption but has legitimised higher levels of corruption in the country and also legitimising the phenomenon state capture virtually at all levels.

The former director general of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) said if the truth is to be told, whatever was the failings of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015, it was less grievous than what it has become under APC in 2024.

Lukman said given the way the failure of APC has widened the countrys fault lines, it was important that considerations for developing a united political front painstakingly aspire to unite political leaders across the country.

For instance, the way the people of the South-East rejected the APC since 2015 must be redressed. Any new united political front should gain some measure of high acceptability in virtually all parts of the country.

The requirement for high acceptability from all sections of the country should humble all political leaders in the country, especially Alh. Atiku Abubakar and Mr. Peter Obi not to exploit the need for such a united front by imposing their Presidential ambitions.

In the same vein, other APC leaders such as Prof. Osinbajo, Chief Amaechi, Dr. Fayemi, Mal. El-Rufai, Sen. Amosu, etc. (APC political orphans) who in one way or the other have ambitions to become Nigerias President must bury such ambitions, at least not during the negotiation to form the united political front.

We must appeal to all political leaders in Nigeria, across all the political parties in the country to commit themselves in forging a new atmosphere of political unity in the country based on selfless disposition, forgiving the misgiving of the past and national reconciliation. If APC and President Asiwaju Tinubu are to have any considerable electoral strength in 2027 it will be on account of the current division, which characterise Nigerian politics and make it impossible for any form of cooperation by political leaders. Absence of cooperation among political leaders is responsible for the rising incidences of bad governance in the country and is eroding the basis Nigerian nationhood. Once democracy cannot respond to challenges facing citizens, Nigeria as a sovereign entity will be irrelevant and questionable.

Nigerian opposition political leaders, including the orphaned leaders of APC who are excluded in the APC government of President Asiwaju Tinubu, notably Alh. Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Chief Rotimi Amaechi, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, Mal. Nasir El-Rufai, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, etc. must unite to rescue Nigeria.

Whether producing the united political platform can be achieved through merger of existing parties, forming a new party or rebranding any of the existing parties is a decision that can be determined if leaders agree to come together and unite. Political leaders in Nigeria, notably Alh. Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Chief Rotimi Amaechi, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, Mal. Nasir El-Rufai, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, etc. must answer the question as to whether they want to allow their narrow political ambition to continue block the path for the democratic development of Nigeria?

Or why shouldnt they aspire to register their name as political leaders who were able to rise to the occasion in Nigerias hour of national need by coming together to forge a united political front, which could transformed Nigerias democracy and reverse the phenomenon of state capture that produced small corrupt groups of used government officials who are appropriating government decision-making to strengthen their own economic positions?

Getting out of such a mess will require strong political parties, which are lacking in contemporary Nigerian politics. How can we get political leaders to commit themselves towards building strong political parties? Whether Nigerian democracy can have the kind of future, which could enable elected representatives and governments to competently and effectively respond to challenges facing Nigerians is contingent on the ability of political leaders to produce strong political parties.

So long as the aspirations of Nigerian politicians is only limited to winning elections and producing new elected leaders, Nigerian democracy will be unable to reverse the phenomenon of state capture, which is now in the advanced stage of taking over the Federal Government.

The Martins Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly has written to the state governor, Siminialayi Fubara, highlighting his actions that breached the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The Rivers state government under your watch is now barred from spending funds from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the state. The House hereby gives you the opportunity to present same within seven days from the date of this resolution, the House said.

The Rivers Assembly also drew the governors attention to his breach of 192(2) of the Constitution accusing him of inaugurating purported members of the Rivers State Executive Council as commissioners.

The lawmakers told the governor that he also breached Section 7(1) of the Constitution and the Rivers State local government (Amendment) Law 2023 for swearing in certain unelected individuals to manage the affairs of the 23 local government councils in the state in flagrant disobedience to the judgement delivered by Justice Omotosho.

The learned Judge restrained you from dealing with the three suspended who with your connivance are parading themselves as Rivers House of Assembly in total disobedience to the order of the learned Judge, the House told the governor.

The lawmakers said the governor in total disregard to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended and the judgement delivered by the Court of Appeal, continued to transact with the three suspended members in contempt of the orders of the court.

The House said the governor refused to direct all impostors in his government to stop parading in their purported positions.

The House said: These infractions by you on the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as altered, other extant laws and judicial pronouncements constitute gross misconduct ans abuse of office on your part.

Oko-Jumbo lawmakers hold plenary, confirm Fubaras commissioner-nominee

The Victor Oko-Jumbo-led lawmakers in Rivers State on Monday, July 8, held a plenary, screened and confirmed Governor Siminialayi Fubaras commissioner nominee, Emmanuel Onengiye-Ofori Frank-Fubara.

The screening and confirmation followed a letter sent by Fubara to Oko-Jumbo, requesting the House to confirm Frank-Fubara as a commissioner to serve in the Rivers State Executive Council.

Oko-Jumbo, while reading the letter during plenary at the temporary facility used for Legislative business in Government House Port Harcourt on Monday, said Fubara sent the request pursuant to Section 192 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

During the screening, Frank-Fubara explained that he hails from Abonnema Town in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, adding that he had been in legal practice for 26 years where he managed his private legal chamber in Port Harcourt after being called to bar in 1998.

Frank-Fubara also said that having served on many boards and committees in the public sector, he would bring his wealth of experience to his new appointment if confirmed and sworn in, adding that he would discharge his duties creditably with unalloyed commitment.

The House later reverted to the business of plenary where they openly debated on two bills: the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency Bill, 2024; and the Rivers State Transport Company Reform Bill, 2024.

The lawmakers passed the two bills through a second reading and committed them to the committee stage to allow for further detailed examination with instruction to conduct public hearings and report the outcome to the House in the next two weeks.

Amaewhule-Led Assembly gives Fubara deadline to resubmit 2024 budget

The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule, has given Governor Siminalayi Fubara a 7-day ultimatum to resubmit the 2024 budget for review.

The reports said that this directive came after the pro-Wike faction of the House convened for their first session in several months yesterday.

Previously, Governor Fubara had presented the budget to the Oko-Jumbo faction, which supports him, with his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, presiding as Speaker.

Ehie and the pro-Fubara lawmakers passed the budget estimates, and the governor subsequently signed it into law, highlighting its goals of fostering economic development, inclusive growth, and reducing socio-economic inequality in the state.

Meanwhile, a parallel session was also held by the faction led by Victor Oko-Jumbo.

The political upheaval in Rivers State assumed new dimensions on Monday, with two factions of the State House of Assembly holding parallel sittings.

It was understood the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led House loyal to the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara and the Martin Amaewhule-led House loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, held sittings at different venues in the state.

While the pro-Fubara lawmakers held their sitting in an improvised Hallowed Chamber in the Government House, Port Harcourt, the pro-Wike legislators sat at the State Assembly official quarters along Aba Road, also in the metropolis.

Appeal Court dismisses Rivers council tenure elongation suit

The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has dismissed the suit challenging the ruling of a Rivers State High Court which nullified the tenure extension of 23 elected local council chairmen in the State.

It would be recalled that a State High Court in Port Harcourt had in May, declared Section 2 of the Rivers State Local Government Law No.4 of 2024, which extended the tenure of the elected council officials by six months after the expiration of their tenure, unconstitutional, null, void and inconsistent with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Ruling on the suit filed by the chairmen of Bonny and Opobo/Nkoro local government areas, Justice Diaketima Kio held that the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly overreached itself and that its actions were contrary to the provisions of the amended Nigerian Constitution.

Dissatisfied with the outcome of the judgment, the appellants, Hon. Enyiada Clifford Cookay-Gam (Executive Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area) and six others, had in a suit No: CA/PH/145M/2024 approached the Appeal Court.

In a judgment on Monday, a three-man panel of the appellate court upheld the ruling of the High Court and dismissed the appeal for lacking merit.
