JAMB gives varsities, others 1 month to disclose illegal admissions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board,( JAMB) has given all tertiary institutions in the country one month to disclose all admissions conducted outside its Central Admissions Processing System(CAPS), prior to 2017.

Dr. Fabian Benjamin, Public Communication Advisor for JAMB, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja on behalf of the boards registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, on Sunday, stated that the directive was aimed at enhancing transparency and fairness in the admissions process.

His words, The attention of the Board has been drawn to the predilection of some institutions to admit candidates outside the approved Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) platform and process such through the condonement of illegal admissions window to accord legitimacy.

In order to close this abused window, the Board has decided that: all institutions should now (or never) disclose all candidates illegally-admitted prior to 2017 whose records are in their system within the next one month, beginning from 1st August, 2024; and any admission purportedly given prior to 2017 will no longer be recognised or condoned unless disclosed within this one-month window.

Institutions are advised to comply with this directive as there will not be any further condonement of hitherto unrecorded candidates who did not even register with JAMB not to talk of sitting for any entrance examination.

This move is aimed at curbing illegal admissions and falsification of records, while ensuring compliance with the provisions of CAPS.

He said the decision marks the end of the Condonement of Illegal Admissions window, which previously allowed institutions to incorporate unauthorized admissions into the system.

Benjamin highlighted concerns over institutions colluding with candidates to falsify details for illegal admissions, which has led to fraudulent participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

He said despite warnings, some institutions continue to admit candidates outside CAPS and seek Condonement of Undisclosed Illegal Institutional Admissions (CUIIA).

Consequently, the Board is terminating the aspect of CUIIA process which allows completely unregistered candidates (without registration) to be introduced to the system. CAPS is the only authorized platform for admissions. Those who even have registration but were illegally admitted between the period (2017-2020) would soon be denied the opportunity of the waiver unless they are disclosed within the next one month.

Therefore, all institutions are hereby directed to disclose, for the final time, all candidates admitted illegally within their systems. Moving forward, the Board will not

Speaking further, Benjamin said recent worse discoveries made it imperative for the Board to speak out to save the integrity of the education system.

On the issue of the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions for 2024/2025 session, the board maintained that the minimum age for admission remains 16 years.

For the 2024 admission cycle, candidates who will be at least sixteen years old at the time of admission will be considered eligible. This decision follows the directive from the Chairman of the 2024 tertiary admission policy meeting, who is also the Honourable Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, SAN,OON that the extant policy of 6-3-3-4 be enforced only from 2025 session.

Only candidates 16-years at time of admission will be considered eligible –JAMB insists

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, ( JAMB), has raised alarm over an upsurge in the number of doctored and upwardly adjusted age declarations on NIN slips being submitted by candidates.

The exam body expressed worry that the trend of underage candidates falsifying their age to gain admission into the university has become dangerous, inimical and unnecessary.

JAMB has now insisted that only candidates who will be at least sixteen years old at the time of admission will be considered eligible for admittance into the university.

A statement by the boards spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said the directive came from the Chairman of the 2024 tertiary admission policy meeting and Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman.

He said the extant 6-3-3-4 on education will be enforced only from the 2025 academic session.

The statement partly read, This position is informed by the discovery of widespread and unwholesome practice whereby some institutions collude with candidates to falsify vital details, such as backdated year of entry and subsequent age adjustments, to utilise certificates of genuine candidates with similar names to facilitate illegal admissions to enable participation of fake candidates in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

Protests: Hoodlums attack church, steal 205 chairs, musical instruments

Some hoodlums invaded the Living Faith Church in the Daura local government area of Katsina State on Saturday night, stealing approximately 205 chairs, musical instruments, and other valuable items worth millions of naira.

The attacks followed nationwide protests on Thursday, August 1st, which included violent clashes between hoodlums and security operatives.

Emmanuel Micah Yakusa, the pastor in charge of the church, informed newsmen yesterday, that Sunday service was conducted under tight security.

He also revealed that the main auditorium and the accountants office were vandalized before the hoodlums made off with everything in the church building during the protests.

He said: We have two security men working in the church, one was on duty while the other was off. When the protest began around 10:00am, the hoodlums just diverted to the church, many of them in Keke NAPEP (Tricycle), and broke the doors and classes and penetrated the church auditorium.

They packed everything inside the church auditorium, including the wall digital clock, musical instruments, pupit, pastors chairs, plastic chairs, and a desktop computer at the reception, as well as a scoreboard where the accountant usually kept church documents. They scattered everything.

He added that three churches were also targeted but the hoodlums only succeeded in invading the Living Faith Church and Deeper Life Church, but couldnt force themselves into the Anglican Church because of the strong iron protector at the gate.

He also announced that the church has informed the police and the Army about it, and the police told us yesterday that they have made some arrests.

He said: Im surprised by this attack; when we are thinking about ending bad governance, which now escalated to the invasion of churches, it is something that everyone should seriously condemn. It is not food that we store in the House of God. It is a place of worship. Why is it only church? The government should come to the reality they are serving humanity, and God will judge us all, whether political or religious leaders.

My prayer to the perpetrators is that they should repent from what they are doing because for you to enter church, a place of worship, is wrong and you know you are not fighting man, they should seek for repentance. I know God is forgiving and He will forgive them Meanwhile the former state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Very Rev. Nelson Onyekachukus church was also vandalised.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Sadiq Abubakar, confirmed the incident when contacted.

He further assured that arrests have been made while investigations were ongoing

Govt approves N183bn for 141 urban, 20 rural roads

Enugu State Government has approved the sum of N183bn for the construction of 141 roads across Enugu metropolis and 20 rural roads across the three senatorial zones of the state.

The government also approved the award of 133 more smart schools in addition to the ongoing 127 smart schools to bring them to 260 or one smart school per political ward.

The approvals were disclosed at the end of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Peter Mbah at the Government House, Enugu, at the weekend.

Briefing newsmen at the end of the Exco meeting, the Secretary to the State Government, (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the projects were in furtherance of Governor Peter Mbahs determination to grow the states economy from $4.4bn to $30bn, achieve a zero per cent poverty headcount index as well as position Enugu State as the premier destination for business, investment, tourism, and for living in four to eight years.

Recall that before now, the states total budget hovered around N100bn and N120bn with capital expenditure of about N30bn or capital expenditure to budget ratio of about 25 to 35 per cent.

However, in keeping with Governor Mbah’s promise to de-risk investments, boost production, and run a lean and prudent government, the governor proposed an unprecedented N521.5bn 2024 budget with a capital expenditure totaling over N400bn, which is an equivalent of capital expenditure to budget ratio of about 80 per cent and recurrent expenditure ratio of about 20 per cent.

“Accordingly, the theme that we took away from Exco today is doubling down. The government is doubling down on infrastructure. If you recall, we started with 71 urban roads and 10 rural roads last year. Now, the governor and the Executive Council have also approved 141 urban roads and 20 rural roads.

“It is noteworthy that although the rural roads are 20 in number, compared to 141 in Enugu metropolis, they are actually more, nearly three times those approved for Enugu urban in terms of kilometres.

“This is part of the strategies to improve the quality of life in the rural communities and importantly to de-risk investments in agriculture. Outside security, which we are effectively dealing with, the big elephant in the room is to scale up the production and movement of produce from farmlands to the market. We also understand the need for processing, hence the heavy investments in road infrastructure”, Onyia stated.

Launches Farm-To-Feed campaign against hunger

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State has launched the Farm-To-Feed Campaign initiative.

The programme, which aims to encourage and mobilise Ndị Anambra to venture into farming was flagged off by the governor at a farm in Amansea, Awka North Local Government Area.

Performing the function, Governor Soludo revealed that the initiative was one of the positive steps to move the state and country forward. We are here as part of our own response to the issues surrounding hunger.

While others in some places are protesting, Anambra State is not protesting.

“I want to thank our youths and everyone who are going about their businesses.

“We are here to take positive steps to move the state and country forward.

“Our people are not participating in the protest, not because they dont feel the pain, but because they want to be part of the solution.

“The youths want to embrace their destinies and I want to commend you for that.

“This is citizens action against hunger in partnership with government. We want to turn our challenges into opportunities”, he added.

The governor recalled that his administration had already distributed over one million palm and coconut seedlings, with a target of ten million seedlings before the end of his government.

“The farm-to-feed campaign is a simple partnership deal to end hunger within the next 12 months.

“The citizens have a lot to do, including public servants. The only job allowed by the constitution for public servants is farming.

The governor recalled that 40 years ago, the late Sunny Okosun sang a song titled; Which way Nigeria, where he noted that Nigerians had been singing songs of lamentations for decades, stressing that it was now time for action.

“In that song, Sunny Okosun sang that every little thing that goes wrong, people blame the government. Lets turn farming and agriculture as the new national pride.

“I agree there is hunger in the landdo something about it.

“If everyone starts producing, the pressure on food prices will reduce. Turn every vacant piece of land to farm, rent a space if you can, but plant something.

“Here in Anambra, we will continue to do more.

He expressed readiness to collaborate with organisations and work out schemes, saying soon, his administration would celebrate the farm champions.

“Local government chairmen, churches and other stakeholders should take the campaign down to their people.

“Ndị Igbo aren’t protesting because they believe in hard work. We’ve seen far worse conditions before, but we are resilient people, and by a dint of hard work, we shall prevail.

Fubara to caretaker chairmen: empower your people or be sacked

Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has told local government caretaker committee chairmen to either empower their people or face removal.

Fubara, who spoke through Victor Oko-Jumbo, at the unveiling of the empowerment programme in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state, emphasised that the primary responsibility of the chairmen was to serve their people.

Oko-Jumbo, who is the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House Assembly, asked them to learn from the governors commitment to empower the people.

He highlighted Fubaras bold response to the August 1 hunger protest, showcasing his connection with the people.

Oko-Jumbo emphasised that officials must follow the governors lead, increasing empowerment initiatives in their respective local governments.

He said: Any caretaker committee chairman that is not empowering his people, we will remove that person.

“Your duty is for your people first, it is to your people. Today, we are here to witness that empowerment which was the instruction the governor gave.

He praised the unified leadership of Ikwerre LGA for standing firm with the governor, resulting in development for the people.

He said: Let me use this medium to assure our people that the Rivers State House Assembly led by Victor Oko-Jumbo will Continue to give the governor the needed support so that the state must succeed till 2027.

“We will make sure that the Governor will have uninterrupted four years of governance in this state. And if you permit, he will have another four years.

“Let me also use this opportunity to thank the leadership of Ikwerre LGA, I believe that at this stage the entire leadership is there because it has been unified and has stood firm with the governor and it is because of the unity that you are now seeing development in our people.

Fubara warned chairmen that failure to conduct further empowerment programmes would result in invitations to account for their actions.

Earlier, Darlington Orji, Caretaker Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, said the unveiling of the empowerment programme was a fulfilment of his long-held desire to enhance security in the council.

Speaking at the unveiling of empowerment programmes, Orji revealed his past prayers for an opportunity to make a difference.

As former Chief of Staff to the former council chairman, Samuel Nwanosike, Orji said he had identified security challenges and advocated for attention.

He said he had delivered on his promise, presenting operational vehicles to all six police divisions in the council, including the DSS.

Atiku reacts as Police uses live bullets on protesters, writes ICC

The Former Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has called on the International Criminal Court, (ICC), to look into the activities of security agents and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the use of live bullets on #EndBadGovernance Protesters.

“I vehemently condemn the heinous act of using live ammunition on citizens peacefully protesting against bad governance, as witnessed today in Kano and Abuja. This is utterly intolerable and reminiscent of the dark days of military dictatorship.

“It is crucial to remind the government and security agencies of their paramount duty to ensure a safe and secure environment where citizens can exercise their right to protest without fear. When security forces open fire on innocent protesters, they do nothing but exacerbate tensions, transforming peaceful demonstrations into chaos. I refuse to believe that inciting violence is the intention of our authorities.

“I urge the international community, including the United Nations and the International Criminal Court, to closely monitor the situation in Nigeria and hold its leadership and security apparatus accountable.

“I reaffirm my counsel to protesters to steadfastly exercise their right to peaceful protest and reject any form of violence. Those engaging in looting and the destruction of public and private property must be isolated and prosecuted according to the law. By indulging in such acts, they undermine the legitimate protests and play into the hands of those who oppose their right to protest.

“President Tinubu must demonstrate true leadership by immediately addressing and implementing the demands of the Nigerian people, Atiku stated.

Soyinka condemns Tinubu’s speech encouraging police brutality, warns of potential revolution

Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has rebuked President Bola Tinubu’s Sunday broadcast for failing to address police and SSS deployment of lethal force to quell #EndHunger demonstrations, which began on August 1 and are scheduled to last 10 days.

Mr Soyinka, 90, a longtime ally of the president, said Mr Tinubu’s neglect to address the matter in his minutes-long broadcast could be seen as endorsing and empowering security agencies to continue toeing the path of impunity.

My primary concern, quite predictably, is the continuing deterioration of the states seizure of protest management, an area in which the presidential address fell conspicuously short, the celebrated literature icon said in a statement on Sunday. Such short-changing of civic deserving, regrettably, goes to arm the security forces in the exercise of impunity and condemns the nation to a seemingly unbreakable cycle of resentment and reprisals.

Mr Soyinka condemned the use of live rounds to disperse protesters, noting that the protest itself was not unique to Nigeria alone, recounting how similar natuonwide protests took place in France as recently as 2022 and 2023.

Live bullets as state response to civic protestthat becomes the core issue. Even tear gas remains questionable in most circumstances, certainly an abuse in situations of clearly peaceful protest. Hunger marches constitute a universal SOS, not peculiar to the Nigerian nation, wrote the nonagenarian.

Police and SSS operatives fired live ammunition at journalists hanging around the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja to cover the protests shortly after noon on Saturday.

The rear windshield of a Toyota Sienna vehicle conveying reporters from The Punch and Cable was shattered into smithereens after getting shot by the agents.

Mr Soyinka said the nation was long overdue to abandon, permanently, the anachronistic resort to lethal means by the security agencies of governance.

Firing live bullets at peaceful protesters who bemoaned hunger in the land, according to Mr Soyinka, symbolises an ominous retrogression, the kind that precedes upheavals and most likely revolutions. The serving of bullets where bread is pleaded is ominous retrogression, and we know what that eventually provesa prelude to far more desperate upheavals, not excluding revolutions, Mr Soyinka warned.

Killing of 8 in Imo: CP Danjuma visits area, vows to nab culprits

Following the gruesome murder of eight individuals in Umucheke Okwe Community, Onuimo LGA, Imo State, by yet-to-be-identified assailants, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, has visited the area for an on-the-spot assessment of the tragic incident.

Danjuma was accopained by the Sole Administrator of the LGA, Dr. Emeka Obi, and a representative of the Commander 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, Major A.I. Maikarifi.

The State Police Commissioner, together with other security officials, extended their condolences to the families of the victims and the entire community.

They assured them that security agencies in the state were working in synergy to apprehend those responsible for the heinous act and ensure they face the full wrath of the law.

According to a release issued by the Command Spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, the entourage also included the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Mathew Ovye, among others.

The attack occurred on Saturday in Umucheke Okwe of the Council Area.

A community member, who requested anonymity, revealed that the assailants struck while the victims were in a meeting at the residence of the Town Union President General.

The attackers began shooting sporadically, killing the President General and other village heads.

The motive behind the killings remains unclear. The source stated, Nobody can ascertain the reason for the attack, and there is growing apprehension in the community.

Constant dialogue ‘ll avert future protests, says Gov. Uzodimma

Governor Uzodimma

Imo state Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma has advocated constant dialogue by the government with relevant Nigerian stakeholders, as a veritable means of averting any future disenchantment or protests.

According to him, if the organisers and participants of the recent protests were fully engaged and informed of the gains of the economic reforms by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, there would not have been any need for the protests.

Senator Uzodimma, who was speaking in Arise Television in an extensive interview, blamed lack of information on the real cause of the temporary economic hardship and efforts being made to address them, as the main reasons the protests took place.

Hear him: “I sincerely believe that there was no need for the protests. If Nigerians were better informed of the efforts made by the President to address the issues they were protesting, they would have stayed home.”

The governor noted that it was not just the duty of the President alone to offer such an explanation, adding that it involves all officials of the government at all tiers.

He said: “We have the Vice President, we have the Senate President, we have 360 House of Representatives members, who should have their Constituency offices and attract constituency projects, and we have 109 Senators and governors and commissioners, who collectively should offer explanation to Nigerians on what is happening in government”.

According to the Chairman, South East Governors’ Forum, such a dialogue with Nigerians would help to clear confusion and suspicion, as well as engender trust in government.

He explained that given our culture and tradition, there were means of exhaustively addressing grievances before they snowballed to violence and protests.

Senator Uzodimma said going forward, all the tiers of government should activate regular communication between them and ordinary Nigerians, on what the Federal Government is doing in terms of reviving the economy and ameliorating hardships.

He noted that the economic reforms embarked upon by President Tinubu have temporary consequential impacts, which, he said, will progressively ease off to a robust living condition for Nigerians.

“I have always said it, that what we are experiencing is like the pangs of labour which will soon bring joy as soon as the child is born,” he further said.

The governor however blamed what he described as leadership failure on the part of past administrations, as being responsible for the economic quagmire Nigerians found themselves, saying that it was only Tinubu that had the courage to stop the slide into anarchy.

He, therefore, pleaded with Nigerians to have faith in Tinubu and the government, saying that a country without a stable government was an open invitation to anarchy.

On why the people of the South East did not participate in the nationwide protests, Uzodimma attributed it to the grace of God, which opened the eyes of the people to the futility of the action.

He lamented that Igbo people had often borne the brunt of any kind of crisis in Nigeria, leading to their being killed and their property destroyed.

He said leaders in the Soufh East had also carried out enlightenment programmes, sensitizing the youths, on why they should shun the protests.

He disclosed that within the 14 months in office as President, South East people have felt the impact of Tinubu’s leadership, therefore, would continue to offer him the necessary supports to succeed.

EndBadGovernance: Edo protesters shun Tinubus appeal, hold live Sunday service rally

Despite the appeal by President Bola Tinubu, urging Nigerian youths to suspend the ongoing nationwide protests against the high cost of living, protesters in Edo State stormed the road on Sunday morning for a live church service.

The protesters gathered at the Agho junction on Ekenhuan road, Benin City, praying to God for intervention in the several crises rocking the nation at the moment.

President Tinubu on Sunday morning addressed Nigerians on the ongoing nationwide EndBadGovernance protests.

The president, who expressed sadness over the loss of lives and properties after hoodlums hijacked the protest, appealed to the youths to suspend the exercise.

Tinubu while reeling out some steps taken by the Federal Government to alleviate the suffering, said the countrys economy is already on its way to recovery.

His speech was vehemently criticized by Nigerians who claimed that the president failed to address their demands.

Crisis: U.S. deploys ships fighter jets to Middle East

The U.S. is adding to its military presence in the Middle East in an effort to help defend Israel from possible attacks by Iran and its proxies in the coming days, as well as to protect U.S. troops, the Pentagon says.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Friday that he ordered more ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers to the Middle East and Europe. An additional fighter jet squadron will also be sent to the Middle East. Austin added that the U.S. is also taking steps “to increase our readiness to deploy additional land-based ballistic missile defense.”

The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group will also be moved to the Middle East in order “to maintain a carrier strike group presence.” It will replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group after the end of its deployment.

Attack at beach hotel kills at least 32 in Somalia

Police in Somalia said Saturday that 32 people died and 63 others were wounded in an attack on a beach hotel in the capital, Mogadishu, the previous evening.

Al Qaeda’s East Africa affiliate, al-Shabab, said through its radio that its fighters carried out the attack.

Police spokesperson Maj. Abdifatah Adan Hassan told journalists that one soldier was killed in the attack and that the rest were civilians. Another soldier was also wounded in the attack, Hassan said. Witnesses reported an explosion followed by gunfire.

A witness, Mohamud Moalim, told The Associated Press that he saw an attacker wearing an explosive vest moments before the man “blew himself up next to the beach-view hotel.”

Moalim said some of his friends who were with him at the hotel were killed and others were wounded.

Another witness, Abdisalam Adam, told the AP that he “saw many people lying on the ground” and had helped take some wounded people to the hospital.

The Lido Beach area has in the past been targeted by militants allied to al-Shabab. The most recent attack last year killed nine people.

In a separate attack on Saturday, state media reported that seven people died after a passenger vehicle hit a roadside bomb some 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the capital.

Al-Shabab still controls parts of southern and central Somalia and continues to carry out attacks in Mogadishu and other areas while extorting millions of dollars a year from residents and businesses in its quest to impose an Islamic state.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud last year declared a “total war” on the militants as the country started taking charge of its own security.

The Friday attack comes a month after Somalia started the third phase of the drawdown of peacekeeping troops under the African Union Transition Mission.

Bangladesh protest leader, says PM must resign

The leader of ongoing student demonstrations across Bangladesh demanded on Saturday that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina “must resign and she must face trial” for a police crackdown on protesters last month.

“Sheikh Hasina should not only resign, there should be a trial for the murders, looting and corruption,” Students Against Discrimination leader Nahid Islam told a crowd of thousands in central Dhaka.

Thousands of people from all walks of life gathered in Bangladesh’s capital to demand justice for more than 200 students and others killed in a wave of violence last month amid protests against a controversial quota system for government jobs.

The protesters chanted anti-government slogans, such as “Justice, Justice, We want justice” and “Resignation, resignation, Sheikh Hasina’s resignation,” as the wave of protest widened beyond students. Elsewhere in Dhaka, hundreds of others including students, parents, doctors and teachers rallied.

The protest was peaceful as processions streamed toward the central Shaheed Minar, a monument to people killed in 1952 during a protest demanding that the then-ruling Pakistani government recognize Bengali as a state language. Bangladesh was the eastern part of Pakistan until it won independence in 1971 through a bloody war, aided by India.

As protests continued to spread, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday offered to talk with student leaders, but a coordinator refused in a Facebook post.

Nahid Islam, a leading protest coordinator, wrote: “One cannot ask a killer government for justice or sit for talks with them. The time to ask forgiveness has passed. When there was still time, the government conducted block raids to arrest and torture students.”

Iran says a short-range projectile killed Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said a short-range projectile was behind the killing of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh and accused the United States of supporting the attack which it blamed on Israel, state TV reported Saturday.

The televised statement said a rocket with a seven-kilogram (about 15-pound) warhead was used to target the residence of Hamas’ political leader in the capital Tehran on Wednesday, adding it caused heavy devastation, but didn’t share details of the location.

Haniyeh was in Iran to attend the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

“The action was designed and carried out by the Zionist regime and supported by the U.S.,” said the Guard’s statement and reiterated a call for retaliation.

“The warmongering and terrorist Zionist regime will receive harsh punishment in the suitable time, place, and capacity,” it added.

Israel had pledged to kill Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders over the group’s Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel that sparked the war in Gaza.

The assassination has sparked fears of pushing the region into a wider conflict and forcing Iran and Israel into a direct confrontation if Iran retaliates.

In April, Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel which the Jewish state said it intercepted 99% of. It came less than two weeks after a suspected Israeli strike in Syria killed two Iranian generals, marking the first time Iran has launched a direct military assault on Israel, despite decades of enmity dating back to the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran does not recognize Israel and supports anti-Israeli militant groups like Hamas and Lebanese Hezbollah.

Blinken speaks with Venezuela opposition as Maduro’s win ratified

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has spoken on the phone with Venezuela’s Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who Washington has said won the most votes in the country’s presidential election last Sunday.

During Friday’s call, which also included opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, Blinken congratulated Gonzalez on “receiving the most votes” in the election despite the official results by the Venezuelan National Electoral Council.

According to the Venezuelan National Electoral Council, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been running the country since 2013, secured 51 percent of the vote against 44 percent by Gonzalez.

The results, however, have been disputed by the opposition.

Blinken said the election council still has not published the data or any of the vote tallies, while the opposition has published more than 80 percent of the tally sheets from polling stations throughout Venezuela.

“Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election,” he said in a statement.

He expressed concern for their “safety and well-being following the election and condemned all political violence and repression”, according to State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller.

“The Secretary applauded the Venezuelan people for their dedication to democracy in the face of significant challenges and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting the process of re-establishing democratic norms in Venezuela,” he added.

Trump agrees to debate with Kamala Harris

Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has agreed with Fox News to debate with Democratic Vice President, Kamala Harris, on September 4.

The former President of the United States made this known in a post via his Truth Social platform.

He said, “I have agreed with FoxNews to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th.

“Rules will be similar to the rules of my debate with Sleepy Joe, who has been treated horribly by his party, but with a full arena audience.”

However, it was not immediately clear if Harris had agreed to the debate.

Meanwhile, Kamala Harris secured the Democratic party’s presidential nomination on Friday.

The development confirms Harris as the party’s standard bearer in November’s showdown against Republican Donald Trump.

Harris was the sole candidate on the ballot for a five-day electronic vote of nearly 4,000 party convention delegates.

She will be officially crowned at a Chicago convention later this month.

“I am honoured to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States,” Harris, 59, said on a phone-in to a party celebration after securing enough votes by the second day of the marathon vote.

Since President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid, Harris has gained full control of the party.

No other Democrats stepped forward to challenge her elevation to the top of the ticket, making her confirmation as the first Black and South Asian woman ever to secure a major party’s nomination a formality.

South East Caucus of National Assembly warns of ethnic profiling of Igbos From Henrietta Ashikodi

The South East Caucus of the National Assembly on Friday described as unfortunate and dangerous the ethnic profiling of Igbos in the ongoing mass protests across the country.

This ugly situation came up during the nation wide protest as several statements such as the Igbo Must Go hashtag started emanating online. Such comment became worrisome especially when Igbos heeded to the advice of their leaders and shun the protest.

The South East Caucus who expressed their concern over the development and quickly condemned the Igbo must go hashtag through a press release signed by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe Leader of the South East Senate Caucus of the National Assembly and the Rt Hon Igariwey Iduma Enwo Leader of the South East Caucus of the House of Representatives.

“For the records, the Igbo nation, in obedience to the advice of their leaders, Governors, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, parliamentarians and others in the private sector- had taken a reasoned and strategic decision not to participate in the on-going nationwide protests.

“This is evident in the relative calm experienced in the five South Eastern states.

“We are, therefore, surprised and disappointed, that Igbos are still made scapegoats, and targeted as instigators of the protests, as shown in several statements (such as the Igbo Must Go hashtag and call by a certain ‘Lagospedia’ X(Twitter) handle) and videos seen online.

“This dangerous ethnic profiling is unwarranted, and must stop. It was such profiling that led to the millions of deaths in Nigeria from the 1950’s to the unfortunate civil war in 1967 to 1970. Elsewhere in Africa it led to the genocide in Rwanda and the xenophobia in South Africa.

“Such should not be our fate again in Nigeria.

“We demand therefore that the security agencies bring to book the purveyors of these hate speeches in line with the cybercrimes act and criminal laws of the country.

“We continue to appeal to Igbos across the country to stay away from the protests, and remain law abiding. The caucus stated

Uzodimma appreciates South Easterners for not participating in protest

By Jennifer John

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has expressed unreserved appreciation to people of the South East region for agreeing and resolving not to participate in the ongoing nationwide protest against bad governance, hunger and hardship.

Uzodimma made this appreciation while fielding questions from newsmen over the nationwide protest and situation in Imo State and entire South Eastern States. He said the people relied on past experience which has shown that each time there is violent protest in Nigeria, Igbos pay dearly for it, as the shops looted in various parts of the country during crisis belongs mainly to Igbo people.

The Governor posited that the current agitation was contrived by aggrieved politicians describing it as unnecessary, as according to him, the current hunger and hardship were not of any activity of the current President, whose administration was barely one year old.

“Those behind this protest, some of them have been two times speakers of Houses of Assemblies, some have been Ministers for eight years or more, some have been governors for eight years. One time or the other, they have been in government and the result of their failure, what they were not able to do for lack of courage or selfish interest, is what put us in the current hardship.

Meanwhile, this is the only time we have seen courage to dismantle the cabal in the Oil and Gas Sector, to the extent that Crude Oil is now sold in local currency, dismantled the cabal in the power sector, who were busy increasing the prize of power, without supplying power to Nigerians, and in virtually all sectors of the Nigerian economy”, Uzodimma enthused.

The Imo State Governor concluded by saying it was time for Nigerians to tell themselves the home truth and encourage dialogue, jettison blame game, be productive and develope the country for better prosperity.

He charged the stakeholders to speak to the consciences of their brothers and sisters not to be used by enemies of progress to cause mayhem and distrort the developmental trajectory and policies of the State.

“All over the world, democracy is the best form of Government where, if you don’t like the present leadership, you wait for the next election and approach the ballot box and change the leadership,” he said and urged criminals and kidnappers to allow our people to go to farm so that we can have food on our table.

The Governor noted that “what Imo State people need today is permanent electricity supply, accessible good roads, hospitals and schools,” noting that “in the absence of these, Imo State doesn’t have an economy.”

He insisted that a conducive environment will spike the entrepreneurial spirit of the Igbo man, hence the need for steady power supply cannot be toyed with.

On this note, he thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting Imo State an energy and economic free trade zone at the Orashi area of the State, informing that the dredging of the Orashi river to the Atlantic will properly start by September with the conclusion of the hydrographic survey.

He said the multiplier effect of all the efforts from his economic revival policies will be the creation of over 15,000 jobs when they are in place.

Again, the Governor assured that by the first quarter of 2025 Orashi Electricity will be fully in operation and that Imo State will be better for it in terms of electricity generation.

“We need to think good for our place and people, and if the environment is attractive those abroad will come back.”

On the scheduled Local Government Election in Imo State in September, the Governor said: “I am not going to influence the Local Government Election, it will be transparent.

We must go by the rules and ensure that credible people that will serve the people are elected.”

He advised those angling for positions as either Chairman or Councilor to go to their people and sell themselves since they will be accountable to the people at the end of the day.

The Governor hinted that the State has been directed by the Federal Government to collect names of 400 persons per Electoral Ward who will be receiving N50,000 per month to cushion their hardship, indicating that the LGA Chairmen will work with opinion moulders in their area to articulate the names of the those who really deserve to receive the money.

The Governor asked the stakeholders to go home and tell their people that “we don’t need crisis.”

He challenged Community leaders to find out what is happening in their area, what is happening in their farm and to the farmers and make arrangement to protect the farmers.

He canvassed for a better collaboration between the traditional rulers and the President Generals, the Communities and the Local Governments, the State and the Federal Government, as doing so will foster peace, unity, progress, growth and development for the good of the citizens.

He encouraged traditional rulers and Town Union and President Generals to put additional efforts to “stop quarrels and keep the peace by reconciling, showing love, making sacrifices and serving your people.”

The Governor assured that between now and January 2025, the State will revive some of the old industries founded by late Governor Sam Mbakwe, citing the Concord Hotel as one of them.

He also hinted that the government is set to revoke all industrial plots not developed at the Imo State Industrial Layout by those who acquired them after 50 years of allocation.

Present at the programme were the Speaker and members of Imo State House of Assembly, the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Cosmas Iwu, the Chief of Staff, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie and members of the State’s Expanded Executive Council.

Others were Senators and members of the Federal House of Representatives, the Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Eze Emmanuel Okeke and his colleagues from the State, captains of industries, and many others

Uzodimma calls for dialogue as South East shuns protest

By Chris Anucha

Imo State governor, Distinquished Senator Hope Uzodimma, has called for dialogue, instead of the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protest

The governor, in an interview he grated to Arise TV and monitored in Owerri, Imo State Capital yesterday, appealed for a halt to the violent protest witnessed in some parts of country, as disobedience could result to anarchy. The governor stressed the need for government to sit down with the protesters to resolve the problems currently faced by the country.

“This fighting, violence must stop” he said. According to him, in South East, there are cultural and traditional ways of resolving issues, without resorting to violence.

The Chairman, South East Governors’ Forum urged the protesters to Sheath their swords and embrace dialogue, and be obedient to the government of the day, as violent protest has the capacity to cause anarchy.

Uzodimma expressed surprise that those behind the protest were at one time or the other, Governors, National Assembly members, Ministers, among others. According to him, President Tinubu has not done anything wrong to deserve the current protest, having been one year in office.

Instead, he said the governor should be commended for initiating some policies programme, and has taking some steps to revive the further said country’s economy. For instance, Uzodimma explained that for the first time, crude oil will be sold in local currency. “What we need now is to address electicity, rail, others”.

He therefore called on the political class, especially, those in the legislateivearm and those holding political positions, to open Constituency offices, where they could interact with the people and tell them the real situation of things.

“The state and national governal governments have a role to play here.

We must sheath the sword, it is a collective participation, it is about Nigeria and patriotism”. Governor Uzodimma, who acknowledged that there are hunger and sufferings in the land, maintained that the problems would not be solved through violence and destruction of lives and properties.

He accused those he described as cabals of being responsible for the protest.

“We must confront the cabals, bad dealers in the oil sector. The President is trying to dismantle the cabals, Nigerians will rise to fight the cabals”, he said.

Meanwhile, reports from the five Southeastern states indicated that the residents shuned the hunger protest.

In Imo State for instance, people stayed indoors or limited their movements to their various areas and compounds. A visit to some areas in Owerri, Imo State Capital revealed that business activities were halted in places like, the ever-busy Douglas Road.

Douglas Road was deserted while pockets of security men were seen on ground, to ensure that miscreants did not take advantage of the situation to loot people’s shops.

It was also the same situation in areas like, Wethedral Road, Bank Road, Tetlow, Control Post, among others.

According to reports from Anambra, Enugu, Abia andEbonyi, residents of the states also shunned the protest

Resident doctors issue 14-day ultimatum to FG over colleagues incarceration

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a two-week ultimatum to the federal government for the unconditional release of their colleague, Ganiyat Popoola, who has been held captive for seven months.

According to the association, failure to comply with this demand will jeopardize the harmonious industrial relationship between resident doctors and the government.

The doctors stated that they had been left with no alternatives after exploring several amicable settlement options with relevant authorities to no avail.

NARD issued the ultimatum in a communiqué on July 27, 2024, following the conclusion of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and Scientific Conference held in Katsina State, where the doctors expressed despair over the continued captivity of Popoola and her nephew, who have been held in inhumane conditions for several months.

The NEC expressed concerns over the deteriorating health of Popoola and her nephew while under captivity and alleged that security agents have made little to no efforts to resolve the situation while also criticizing the nonchalant attitude of the Kaduna State government towards the plight of their colleague and her nephew.

In the communique signed by Dele Olaitan (President), Anaduaka Obinna (Secretary General) Egbe Jonah (Public and Social Secretary), the NEC also frowned at the alarming increase in kidnapping and assault on doctors which is threatening their very existence.

Furthermore, the NEC observed with grave concern, the persistent manpower shortage, crippling the nations healthcare system despite different changes in the recruitment modalities.

“The NEC observed with dismay the casualization of our members in different health institutions all over the country with consequent jeopardy to their welfare.

“Also, while the group observed with dismay the non-payment of upward review of CONMESS arrears for all her members post-implementation in February 2024, described as a blatant disregard for our welfare, the NEC decried the non-implementation of the new accoutrements allowance circular and blatant disregard of a directive of the Federal Ministry by numerous heads of the health institution in the payment of its arrears.

The NEC however appreciated the Government for the quick payment of 2024 MRTF while noting that some centres and individuals are yet to receive payment.

It also decried the unresolved outstanding issues of MRTF 2023, 2022, and 2021.

In its resolution, the resident doctors demanded an expedition in the process of waiver issuance by the Ministry of Health to cover the massive manpower deficits in our institutions. While advocating for a cap on the work hours of healthcare professionals to prevent burnout, the NEC also demanded additional pay for extra hours worked.

The NEC calls for an expedition in the capturing process of medical professionals and abolishment of casualization of Doctors in its entirety.

The NEC demands immediate implementation of the new accoutrements circular and payment of the arrears of the upward review of CONMESS.

The NEC urges heads of institutions to comply with the Federal Ministry directives and work towards ensuring payment of the said accoutrement allowance arrears to avoid industrial disputes within their institutions.

The NEC demands immediate implementation of consequential adjustment of minimum wage along with the implementation of the new minimum wage, the communique added.

Okonkwo, others free to leave Obidient movement Pro-Obi group

The Peter Obi Support Network has acknowledged the recent departures of key supporters, such as Doyin Okupe, Isaac Balami, and Kenneth Okonkwo, from the group.

In a press statement on Sunday, co-convener of POSN, Tochukwu Ezeoke, stated that the group respects their commitment to a better Nigeria and recognises their freedom to leave the Obidient movement.

Ezeoke affirmed that the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, remains committed to advocating for a grassroots political party and a decisive leader with integrity.

He added that the Obidient movement anticipates further resignations from the ranks of 2023 campaign leaders. Obis stance is that leadership must avoid actions that could plunge the country into chaos.

The statement follows the recent departure of Okonkwo and others from the Labour Party.

The statement read in part: Peter Obi and the Obidient Movement did not have access to unlimited state resources during the 2023 election, relying instead on the support of Nigerians at home and abroad.

Peter Obi’s primary concern is the safety and well-being of ordinary Nigerians, even above his political aspirations. The stability of Nigeria is more important than the ambitions of any single candidate.
