In a bid to ensure that women and girls have equal opportunities to influence decisions that affect peace and security in their communities, The Alliances for Africa (AfA) and Imo State government have perfected plans to launch the State Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security.
In her address, during a press conference for the pre-lunch of the advocacy, yesterday, at the Golden Tulip Hotels, Owerri, the Imo Commissioner for Women Affairs & Social Development, Mrs. Nkechi Ugwu, called on all stakeholders in the society to join in the crusade for the Action plan stand.
“We are here for a historic milestone in Imo.This is first of its kind in the State, and the entire South East States. It was developed to domesticate the system in our rural areas in Imo.
In his address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mr. Godson Okoma lauded the consultant, Amy Adekunle and the Alliances for Africa for their support while extending gratitude to the Imo First lady, Barr. Chioma Uzodimma, for her motherly role and support to the ministry.
“The Women Peace and Security Agenda is a global framework under UN Security Council Resolution 1325 captured in five pillars which includes: participation, protection, prevention, Relief and Recovery”.
Responding to questions raised at the briefing, a former lawmaker that represented Njaba State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uju Onwudiwe, Mrs. Blessing Duru of the AfA and Dr. Blessing Azubuike of the Women Affairs Ministry, noted that the Action plan will strengthen women’s leadership in Peace building and promotion in the State.
The programme attracted other top staff of Ministries, Agencies and Parastatals, including traditional rules and others.
